The annual Dribble Drive, a fundraiser for the Mavericks Athletics program, bounced down and then back up Linden Avenue on the evening of April 16. Altogether the young athletes dribbled basketballs about 100 miles as they made their way from Carpinteria High School to the base of Linden and back—then they made about 3,000 free throws at CHS. Coordinator Ryan Reed called the event an “awesome success” and expects that when dollars are tallied, the teams will have enough to partner with another basketball program in South Africa called Hoops for Hope that teaches life and sports skills to impoverished inner-city kids.

The Carpinteria Valley Water District hired on Robert McDonald as its next General Manager at a special board meeting on April 12. McDonald, who has served as District Engineer for 17 years, will officially take the helm on July 1. A 1992 graduate of Cal Poly Pomona, he is a registered civil engineer and also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Cal State Northridge. He will replace Charles Hamilton who has served as General Manager since May 1, 1995 and is retiring on July 1.

The State oil and Gas Supervisor ordered the Rincon island Limited Partnership to remediate, repair or replace many oil wells and other infrastructure operated on Rincon island by June 1. Assemblyman Das Williams has authored legislation to better regulate idle oil wells and commented that the findings at Rincon island highlight the need for increased monitoring of long-term idle oil wells that could pose a threat to environmental and public health. “There are more than 20,000 idle wells in California that could pose similar risks to our groundwater. This is a tragic example of how our current regulations for idle wells are woefully inadequate,” stated Williams in a press release.

Assembly bill 2729 would increase idle well fees to create a stronger incentive to plug and abandon the idle wells. According to Williams, more than 2,229 are in Santa barbara and Ventura Counties. The Rincon island on-site check by the Division of oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources took place on Feb. 23.

Measure U update comes to School Board

Carpinteria unified School District’s board of education will hear an update on Measure u projects—both completed and proposed—at its next meeting on Tuesday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m. Architects will be presenting the work to date of all of the school site facility planning committees, and the presentation will include conceptual site plans with proposed projects and very preliminary budgets. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave.

Commercial vacancy hits record low

According to Hayes Commercial Real Estate, commercial vacancy in Carpinteria has hit a record low of 0.4 percent with only 2,545-square-feet on the market. Four leases signed in the first quarter of 2016, including Procore’s expansion, have made commercial vacancy almost non-existent in Carpinteria. CKe has announced it will vacate its 40,000-square-foot space in April of 2017, which will create vacancy. Currently, the former Salvation Army building at 1000 Mark Ave. is being remodeled and nearing completion. Linkedin will expand into that renovated 32,000-square-feet, according to the report.

Emergency crews prepare to transport a young woman to the hospital after she survived a jump from a car traveling 65 miles per hour.

Woman survives jump from car on highway

A 22-year-old woman threw herself out of a vehicle traveling around 65 miles per hour northbound on Highway 101 near Padaro Lane on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. When first responders arrived, the woman was lying in the roadway with major trauma but was conscious and responsive, according to Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District. The injured woman had been sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by her mother when she flung herself out the door. Leading up to the incident, drivers in the vehicles behind the car had slowed down significantly due to some indication that the woman could be preparing to make a jump. They were able to stop and keep other vehicles from hitting her. The woman’s condition after being transported to the hospital is unknown.

Carpinteria Sanitary District wins national accounting award

Mental Wellness Center to host 5k walk

Carpinteria Sanitary District earned big recognition for its annual comprehensive financial report for demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users to read it. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada gave the district the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. An Award of Financial Reporting Achievement has been awarded to Hamid Hosseini, the District’s Finance Director, who was primarily responsible for preparing the award-winning CAFR. The CAFR is available for review on the District’s website at carpsan.com/ publicinfo/financial.

Tickets on sale for 19th annual Home and Garden Tour

Hundreds of community members will go the extra mile on Friday, May 6, to show support for those affected by mental illness by participating in the 5th annual Walk for Mental Wellness, led by the Mental Wellness Center in Santa Barbara. The 5k sunset beach walk will begin at 5 p.m. at the East Beach Bathhouse, 1118 E. Cabrillo Blvd., in Santa Barbara.

Kicking off Mental Health Month in May, the walk was created to raise awareness for mental health and to generate funding critical to the mission of the Mental Wellness Center. Sticking with the tradition of the last 19 years, Carpinteria Beautiful will host its annual Home and Garden Tour on the last Saturday of April. The event throws open the doors to five local homes for a self-guided tour highlighted by unique architecture, décor and landscaping. This year’s tour takes place on Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donnie Nair, who has been the chairperson for all 19 years said, “We never run out of interesting homes, we have a lot of history and we have some intriguing newer remodels that are full of fresh ideas. For the first time ever our featured ‘Little Gem’ is a modular home that faces the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, which makes for an ever-changing landscape and wildlife observation area right on the front porch.”

IRS warns of tax scams

The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning that scammers may try using the April 18 tax deadline to prey on taxpayers by impersonating the IRS and others with fake phone calls and emails. Even after the tax deadline passes, taxpayers should know the telltale signs of a scam and tips to protect themselves from a variety of phone scams and phishing emails. “We’ve seen continuing activity in these scams throughout the filing season,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “As the tax deadline nears, these criminals may try and trick honest taxpayers over the phone or via email, and people should remain vigilant. After the tax deadline, watch out for these scammers promising a refund or threatening you with an unexpected tax bill.”

Agencies examine recycled water opportunities by peter dugré Carpinteria’s future could involve treated wastewater being recycled into the groundwater basin, but the system would be expensive. At a joint meeting of the Carpinteria City Council, Carpinteria Sanitary District and Carpinteria Valley Water District on April 18, a detailed analysis of what it might take to add a more reliable water source to the local supply was presented by consultant Robert Morrow of RMC. The report zeroed in on injection of treated wastewater through a well as the most efficient method of recycling wastewater. “If you put it in your groundwater basin, you’re able to use your existing system to get it to all the same customers,” Morrow said. Other less efficient options would be using recycled wastewater only for irrigating parks or agricultural lands, but injection is most cost-effective and useful, according to the report.

Still, between infrastructure upgrades at the Sanitary District to convert to an advanced treatment plant and piping the treated water to an injection well, capital costs for such a project would total an estimated $21 million. Annual operating costs would be $1 million. Between debt service and operation, the cost would be about $2 million per year.

“I penciled it out; it’s $33 a month added to your water bill,” commented CVWD boardmember June Van Wingerden, who highlighted that water rates are already a point of contention for CVWD customers. Still, at $1,900 per acre-foot, Morrow said the cost would be less than the $2,400 per acre-foot water that will be generated by Santa Barbara’s

In order to execute a recycled water plan, further studies would have to be done and approval obtained by both the California Water Quality Resources Control Board and California Coastal Commission. If the studies were completed, then local agencies would be able to apply

for state grant funding that could cover 35 percent of the costs. “everyone is doing this right now, so there is kind of a race to get that money,” Morrow said. He recommended that the local agencies hustle to reach the next planning steps in order to get in line for grant funding, which would reduce the cost of recycled water generation to $1,600 per acre-foot.

CVWD General Manager Charles Hamilton stressed that community outreach would be paramount. He cited the Santa Clara Valley, where there is a recycled water system and it took convincing to sway the public of the safety of such a system.

Morrow commented that the water is actually cleaner than the runoff from roads that currently reaches the groundwater basin. Coming straight from the treatment plant, the water would be

potable, but once injected into the basin it would take at least six months to hit a tap, over which time the water would be further diluted.

Other concerns about the recycled water system discussed at the meeting were on the sanitary district side of the equation and what would happen when a portion of the water is removed from the effluent, which is discharged into the ocean. “Our primary concern is with the compliance with our discharge permit.

Concentrations of salts and other solids change,” said Craig Murray, Sanitary District General Manager. examining that change would be part of further studies the agencies must consider conducting.

The agencies would have to form an agreement in order to take the next steps toward permitting the plan, and that aspect was not discussed at the April 18 meeting.

As we all know, bureaucratic wheels tend to turn more slowly than those of us longing for a good cup of joe would like. Encouraging, though, is the fact that the Tingstroms have engaged the same architect who worked on our beloved, but closed, Café Luna. We can hope for an opening in June.

No community along the South Coast suffers as much traffic noise as Summerland. With the freeway literally in our lap, we hear a constant drum roll of cars and trucks. It’s a roar we’re pretty much resigned to, although not with any kind of grace. We grumble and fret, narrow our eyes, plug our ears, hold our noses.

When Caltrans held its obligatory community meetings regarding the freeway widening, we caught a glimmer of hope. Sound walls were a non-starter here where views are prized. But the possibility of using newer noise-abating pavement was dangled in front of us like a carrot. The pavement, an open-graded asphalt rubber mix, could cut down noise considerably, lowering the roar and whine by several decibels.

Both Summerland and Carpinteria will experience major impacts with the construction of the new HOV lanes through our communities in the next months and years. Now we hear Caltrans is hedging its bets, considering other materials in the interests of lowering costs. The current material of choice is Portland cement, specifically, continuously reinforced concrete paving that does away with seams, thus offering some noise reduction.

Here’s the deal, though. Many highway studies have shown that the noise reduction obtained by rubberized asphalt is a lot superior to concrete, even the seamless kind. In both Summerland and Carpinteria, homes, businesses, even schools, run right up to the freeway’s edge. As four lanes widen to six, we will need all the noise abatement that modern technology can provide. We need it for our health and peace of mind. (We won’t get into all the health issues connected to noise exposure—yet.)

The issue of road materials is likely to surface (no pun intended) more and more as the Caltrans beast grinds its slow way through our towns. It’s good to stay informed. Cost issues are hard to dismiss, but so are issues of health, safety and sanity. If we must suffer the racket and pollution of an immensely increased volume of traffic, we have the right to demand road paving most likely to lessen the impact. Let our tax dollars truly work for us.

I went to the LA Times Book Festival that second rainy weekend in April, wandered around with my family, gaping at every kind of booth selling every kind of book imaginable. At lunchtime, I grabbed a bowl of noodles from one of the food trucks, found a free table and sat down in the drizzle. Looking up through rain-spotted glasses, I spied Juan Felipe Herrera, the poet laureate of the United States, seated at a nearby signing table.

Determined to meet this man and get a book signed, I leaped up to see about buying one of his books. Astoundingly, none were available. Sold out, they said.

Which was ridiculous. Barely noon on the first day of the festival and they’d run out of poetry books by the nation’s poet laureate?

Having no other choice, I penned a piece of doggerel on a soggy sheet of paper, presented it to the great man, and asked him to sign it. What gall! (Writers have to be a little shameless or their work would lack spice.) Social and emotional intelligence: We are all teachers it takes a village MARIA FISK, PhD Director of the Carpinteria Children’s Project If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we ______. Teach? Punish?

Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?

Why can’t we? Why isn’t it crystal clear that social and emotional skills can and should be taught? Ahem, could it be that we didn’t know? And that we don’t know how? Most of us came along before mid-1990s when research jumped to mainstream with the long-time best seller “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ” by psychologist Daniel Golman.

Golman writes in the introduction, “Our genetic heritage endows each of us with a series of emotional setpoints that determines our temperament. But the brain circuitry involved is extraordinarily malleable; temperament is not destiny … the emotional lessons we learn as children at home and at school shape the emotional circuits, making us more adept—or inept—at the basics of emotional intelligence.” Getting along with others, managing our emotions, working hard—these things can be learned!

We are all teaching our children how to be in and get along in the world, whether or not we mean to. Uh….not sure how to do that well? You are so not alone.

When my too-old-to-do-it child ran out the door of the gym naked just to spite me (or so I felt at the time), I knew I had met my limit. I know other parents have felt—feel—similarly inept. Most of us were not taught social and emotional skills in any intentional way. Most of us did not benefit from explicit teaching about feelings or expressing our feelings in productive ways. We probably didn’t spend much time at home or school consciously learning strategies for getting along with others, focusing on tasks or avoiding risky temptations.

Our parents were probably more likely to respond to undesirable behavior with punishment than with, “Oh, we have a wonderful teachable moment!” Sidebar: Punishment usually teaches fear or avoidance. It can stop the behavior in the short term, but it doesn’t teach for the long term.

Now we are the parents, grandparents, friends and teachers who want to nurture and build on children’s positive behavior and respond to their inappropriate behavior in instructive ways. It’s grounded in

relationships. A foundational thing an adult can do is to spend some time with the child in their life every day doing what the child likes to do. The focus is on enjoying being together, building the trust that makes the child comfortable that you will always love them and look out for them.

Early childhood teachers similarly focus on building relationships with their children because it is the base on which they teach. Just Friday, I heard a child in the Carpinteria Children’s Project preschool at Canalino announce that she appreciates another child because he is caring and helpful—pretty sophisticated for a 4-year-old! The child’s comment and teacher’s positive and sensitive responses demonstrate the teachers’ work to teach self-awareness of emotions and respect for others.

Throughout Carpinteria, teachers are doing wonderful work supporting a trusting environment and teaching children social and emotional skills. The Carpinteria Early Childhood Education Network was selected as the county demonstration site for a social and emotional skills building professional development funded by an approximately $90,000 Race to Top federal education grant. As a result, many of the early childhood teachers in town have completed an 18 month training and coaching series on developing young children’s social and emotional skills. CUSD transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade and afterschool program staff have also engaged. (Ask any of us about Tucker the Turtle. When he’s upset, he takes time to tuck and think before he acts.)

In this and future columns, I will share more about the underpinning philosophy and teachable strategies for social and emotional skills we have learned as the county demonstration site. Is the third one the charmer?

a monthly muse melinda wittwer Spikey hair, baby blues, smooth skin— how cute is this guy? As he looks at me, one eye wanders off course, and then he burps. His head nestles under my chin while one hand reaches up and grabs my little finger—and my heart. There just doesn’t seem to be any limit on the amount of love one heart can contain when it comes to grandkids.

Last month I had two grandsons; this month I have three. My immediate family just grew by eight pounds. Seeing a newborn may be scary to some, life-changing to others, but no matter whether you are related or not, brand new babies confirm that miracles do happen. You count the fingers and the toes, try to figure out whose nose ended up on the baby’s face, and smile, smile, smile.

Not only are the adults awed by the new baby, but my other two grandsons are definitely interested in their new brother. The 5-year-old is trying to read board books to this new family addition even though the 5-year-old is not actually able to read all the words himself so there’s a great deal of ad lib going on. The 3-year-old might as well have a sign pasted on his forehead, “Notice Me. Notice Me.” He is active in the pursuit of attention and doesn’t quite like sharing Mom with this newcomer, you know, the one that wears diapers.

Watching these brothers meet for the first time was interesting. It’s hard for a 5-year-old to know how to play with someone with a soft spot in his head and a weak neck. The 3-year-old thought his new brother would have fun on the balance bike, but he would need his own helmet. Overall they were very interested in the newborn for about five-and-a-half minutes then wanted to play with Mom’s hospital bed that moved up and down.

A new baby brings changes and challenges to any family, but also who can resist the gassy grins, the contentment after nursing or the urge to hug. One good part about being a grandmother is that I

can have most of the enjoyment without most of the responsibility. I can hold this new baby and read to him and maybe even change a diaper or two, but I don’t have to feed him or bathe him or stay up with him in the middle of the night.

I also don’t have to deal with all three grandsons at the same time. One week I can take the oldest grandson to the library and the coffee shop. The next week I can take the second grandson to the park to play, and the third weekend I can sit at home rocking the newborn while giving my daughter-in-law a few hours to shop, clean or sleep.

Of course I’m happy about this new addition to our family, but I’m also beginning to worry. Will he be healthy? Will he be intelligent? Will he be popular, good looking and athletic? Will he learn how to be happy? Will he have good friends?

Will he resist bad influences and drugs?

Will he drive safely? How much will college cost by the time he’s 18? (Wasn’t it just last week that I was 18?) It seems there’s a never-ending list of things for me to worry about just so I can keep him protected.

But right now I think the important thing is to enjoy this grandson’s newness, his innocence. Each day he will share with us another piece of his personality.

He will wiggle and squirm, laugh and cry his way into our lives and our hearts until it will be hard to remember a time he wasn’t there. He will slowly unveil his talents and his skills and his weaknesses.

And I will continue to assure him of his place in my family and my heart.

Viewpoint Reflections on a school year coming to a close

As we near the end of the school year, I invite you to celebrate the accomplishments of the Carpinteria Unified School District. We conclude the year with notable cradle to post-secondary achievements. We champion vital programs that close literacy and numeracy gaps, encourage students to intentionally craft their futures by developing personalized 10-year plans, and prioritize health and wellness choices. Our students benefit from school-based counseling services and we are on the precipice of developing a master schedule for high school students to explore career and technical pathways.

Every day I draw inspiration from the heroes of our schools. One example revolves around a student who struggles with learning and peer interactions. Her teacher, her aide, her principal, her mentor, her family and other community partners communicate daily in real time to meet her changing needs. Her team has created a safety net so that the student’s failure is not an option. Similar instances of unwavering commitment to children are replicated daily in our schools.

Such progress does not occur in a vacuum: the union leadership is dedicated to bridging relational challenges and modeling collective responsibility; the governing board of trustees for setting a student-centered vision; and the families who support our efforts to teach and shepherd their precious children.

CVN barks up wrong tree

Regarding last week’s “Man on the Street” column about “the barking dogs in the back of the pickup,” it’s a real shame that Larry Nimmer decided to use his usually entertaining little column to solicit—and then print—insults about someone who he does not even know.

Nimmer’s own personal gripe, printed along the bottom (regarding his own dog’s reaction) made clear that he was simply taking advantage of the space to express his own negative views. It’s an even a bigger shame that Coastal View News editors allowed this nonjournalism. The truth is this: those five

gorgeous Labrador retrievers are happy and healthy and living a great life with someone who takes excellent care of them. When you see them barking in the back of the truck, it is because they are so happy they can barely contain themselves.

The worst part is that the dogs’ owner is a thoughtful, caring person, a longtime Carpinteria resident and a talented artist whose sculpture has been shown locally. He loves this town as much as the rest of us, and his feelings were deeply hurt by the undeserved insults that were printed by Mr. Nimmer and the Coastal View News. He is owed an apology.

Halos Pitchforks

A man who called deputies for assistance was found to be allegedly drunk and high on meth on April 8 at 1 p.m. at a Casitas Plaza grocery store. When deputies arrived, the man was inside the store and wearing nothing but shorts and shoes. A deputy noted that this was curious due to inclement weather. The other qualities the man exhibited were smelling of booze and seeming hyperactive. When asked, he reportedly admitted to drinking a lot and smoking meth the night before. He asked to be arrested for protection from a stalker with a pipe who wished him dead. To assess the man’s level of intoxication, officers had him approximate the passing of 30 seconds in his head. After just eight seconds, the man said 30 had passed, a sign of nervous system stimulation. Deputies arrested the man for public intoxication on drugs and alcohol.

Gone, baby, gun

Deputies investigating a report of men being loud in a truck in a Holly Avenue apartment driveway at 10:30 p.m. on April 9 found the men, the truck and more. Three men congregated at the tailgate were reportedly holding open beer bottles when deputies pulled up. One slinked in between the truck and a chainlinked fence momentarily before the

deputy engaged them. An officer asked one of the men if he could reach into the truck and turn down the volume of the music, and the man said fine. Inside, the officer found an additional man sleeping in the back seat and the aroma of freshly burned marijuana.

After asking the slumbering man to exit the vehicle, the officer searched it and followed up in the area where the sneaky fellow had walked near to the fence. A gander over the fence revealed a freshly deposited 9 mm semiautomatic handgun.

The officer checked the 15-bullet magazine and found nine hollow point rounds.

Each of the men was placed in handcuffs for officer protection. To ascertain which man was the one who’d slipped beside the truck to ditch the gun, officers checked their shoes to match prints. Three had the same shoe soles and one had a different print, which matched the fresh tracks in the moist earth.

Officers arrested the man, 22, with the matching shoes for being a felon in possession of a firearm with a high capacity magazine and trying to hide the gun from officers.

Kinderkirk Preschool and Daycare pulled out all the Backyard Barbecue stops at its annual auction on April 16 at Carpinteria Woman’s Club. The event drew a crowd to watch the American Roots band Copper Coast while enjoying expertly grilled meats provided by Los Padres Outfitters and ales by Island Brewing Company. Funds raised at the auction go to the preschool and its youth serving programs.

Natural History Notes

Fewer adults and pups have been seen this year compared to recent past years—about half as many pups. No confirmed reasons have been reported, so far as Carpinteria Sealwatch people are aware. Although sea lions are known to have been affected by a lack of food, in past years the issues that distressed sea lions have not appeared to affect harbor seals

Over 50 teams sent athletes to the 97th Russell Cup on April 16, and no individual performer outshone Branden Smith of Paraclete, who now owns the meet record for both the 100 and 200 meter races. For meet host Carpinteria High School, Chance Wright won the day and the Barney Milne Lions Club Trophy for high Warrior point scorer. Wright won the 300m hurdles (41.54 seconds) and was third in the 110m hurdles (15.85).

For Cate, Joel Serugo won the triple jump 42-10 ¼. It was Cate’s younger athletes, the Frosh/Soph teams that buoyed the school to fourth overall in scoring. Cate girls FS finished second, and the boys FS finished fifth.

Warrior boys varsity finished third, and the school came in ninth in the Grand Sweeps with its combined score.

Warriors fall in seventh

BY ALONZO OROZCO Following an 8-0 loss to Santa Paula to open Tri-Valley League on April 12, the Carpinteria High School softball team hosted another league foe, Nordhoff, on April 14. Scoring the go ahead run in the top of the seventh inning, the Rangers held on to beat the Warriors, 3-2.

However, even with the loss, Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales came away with some positives from the game. “I thought we played well for the most part, but there are those little things you have to do to win ball games, close ball games,” explained Gonzales. “And that’s when you have people on base in scoring position, you need that base hit or something to happen so you can get those runs in.”

Nordhoff took the early lead in the first inning after loading the bases when sophomore Courtney Haapanen’s single to center knocked in two runs to make it 2-0. “We started off a little slow, we hit a batter, we walked a batter; they got a couple base hits. You do that most teams are going to take advantage,” said Gonzales. Meanwhile, Ranger freshman pitcher Sidney Wimpee had the Warrior hitters off balance, changing speeds on her pitches. “That’s something we have to get used to and get better at, change of speeds. We have to keep our hands back, that kind of thing,” said Gonzales.

Carpinteria was able to get on the scoreboard in the third. Senior Ari Macias drew a leadoff walk; then with two outs, sophomore Raquel Cordero singled to right. Another sophomore, pitcher Amanda Blair, knocked a single down the left field line to drive in Macias, and the lead after three was cut in half at 2-1.

The Warriors made some more noise in the fifth as Amanda’s twin sister, Mikayla Blair, singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a wild pitch.

Senior Sierra Diaz then walked, and Cordero’s single to center scored Mikayla to tie the game. Carpinteria would have a

Nordhoff broke through in the seventh, benefitting from another batter reaching first, courtesy of another hit by pitch and two straight singles. Senior captain Haley McMillan’s ground ball brought the run across, and the Warriors found themselves down a run going into the final inning, 3-2. When the first two Carpinteria hitters in the bottom of the

inning struck out, the team was down to its final out.

Amanda kept the game alive with her fourth single of the day, going 4-for-4 for the game. Sophomore Sam Saenz blooped a single to right, and the runners ended up at second and third after an errant throw. A grounder to first ended

“We’re young. We’re going to keep plugging away, and we’ll eventually win those games,” said Gonzales. The loss puts the Warriors at 8-8 overall, 2-2 in league.

The Carpinteria United Boys U14 team won second place at the Apricot Jam Soccer Tournament in Moorpark on April 16 and 17. Despite the over 90-degree heat, Carpinteria United won all three of its pool play games; defeating Walnut 2-1, Simi Valley 5-3 and Thousand Oaks 4-1. In the championship game, Carpinteria United met its strongest opponent Visalia and lost 4-1. “Despite losing to Visalia, the boys played an outstanding tournament and worked well together as a team,” commented the coaches.

Rams down Warriors 3-2 in crosstown volleyball

Cate School boys volleyball proved too much for Carpinteria High School in a 3-2 (17-25, 25-16, 25-12, 16-25, 15-6) Rams’ victory at CHS on April 12. The Warriors started strong but a strategic position swap allowed Cate to pivot into control. Sophomore Parker Matthews moved to the back row to put junior Chase McCaw into position to get in a good setting groove, according to Rams coach Greg Novak. Ram senior Morgan Pierce led the way with 24 kills, eight in

the fifth set.

For the Warriors, opposite Pablo Ortega had 10 kills, and setter Eduardo Rodriguez tallied 20 assists. “Both teams put up a great fight, but in the fifth set, the Warriors had one too many critical mistakes that cost them the match,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. The Warriors fell to 4-4 in Tri-Valley League while the Rams improved to 6-1.

April 12 - The Carpinteria High School softball team lost a league game 8-0 at Santa Paula. “Santa Paula blew open a close game in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs on timely hits and several errors on defense,” said Warrior coach Henry Gonzales. “In our league opener we were unable to come out with the focus and execution needed to beat a good opponent,” added Gonzales.

April 18 – The Carpinteria High School softball team beat Foothill Tech in a nonleague game at home, 1-0. Warrior pitcher Amanda Blair pitched a one-hit shutout.

Mikayla Blair led off the first inning with a double to left center, Tori Kelley then hit a hard, ground ball out to second, moving the runner to third. The next batter, Raquel Cordero hit a ball up the middle for an out, scoring Mikayla for the game’s only run.

The Carpinteria sophomore pitcher struck out seven and walked one.

Boys tennis

April 12 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team dropped a non-league match to Laguna Blanca 12-6. The Warriors number-three doubles team of Sam Truax/ Jacob Ascencio won both its sets, and then Truax carried out his sweep, pairing with Bernardo Cardona. Number-two Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika won two of their three sets. Number-one Myles Morgan/Luke Nahooikaika won one set. “We struggled against their singles players, dropping all nine sets,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant.

April 14 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team got back in the win column again, beating St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League match, 14-4. In doubles, number-three Sam Truax/Jacob Ascencio swept their three sets and only dropped two games on the day. Number-two doubles Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika won two of their three sets. In singles, number-two Bryan Taira and number- three Jeremy Saito both swept. Number-one singles player, Jacques Jougla was down 1-3 in his last set, but did not drop another game and went on to win 6-3.

April 14 - The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team hosted the Malibu Sharks, winning 25-5, 25-8 and 25-12. “Coming off a loss against Cate School, the Sharks were treated like bait by the Warriors,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia.

The Warriors overall record moves to 6–5 with the league record at 5–4.

April 12 – Cate School boys tennis defeated league rival St. Bonaventure 17-1 on the Mesa. Sophomore Nicholas Hildebrandt at number-one singles and junior Christian Herman at number-two singles swept for the Rams. Cate’s doubles teams also swept all the doubles sets. The Rams improve to 4-3 and 3-1 in league play. Cate next plays Laguna Blanca on Thursday and then continues league play on Friday at Malibu.

April 18 – Cate School boys tennis fell to San Marcos, 13-5. The Rams numberone singles player, junior Kevin Ha, won two out of his three sets. Number-two singles sophomore Nicholas Hildebrandt took one set, as did number-one doubles sophomore Charlie Morris/freshman Brad Gordon and number-three doubles junior Anyho Jeong/junior Mason Mackall.

Girls lacrosse

April 13 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team beat formerly undefeated Royal 12-5. The Rams Brie Walker finished with four goals, four ground ball controls, two assists and three draw controls. Katherine Grossman had nine ground balls, two draw controls, two goals and one assist. Sam Hill finished with one draw control, seven ground balls, one assist and two goals. “Anna Graves also showed up to play one of her best games of the season,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta.

April 16 - Cate School girls lacrosse beat Thacher in Ojai by a score of 13-6. Brie Walker scored four goals, had one assist, three ground balls and one draw control for the Rams. Sam Hill scored three goals, had six draw controls and five ground balls.

Katherine Grossman scored two goals, had one assist, and three ground balls. Anna Graves scored two goals, getting one draw control and picked up five ground balls.

Y to host 5k

The Montecito Family YMCA invites the community to lace up its running shoes for the Annual Family Fun 5k and Tot Trot on Saturday, May 14 at the Y, 591 Santa Rosa Lane. Check in begins at 8 a.m. and the 5k starts at 9 a.m. followed by the 10 a.m. Tot Trot. The cost to participate is $30 for adults, $20 for youths aged 8 to 14 and $8 for children. Proceeds benefit the scholarship program for preschool, summer camp, swim lessons and memberships. Following the races, guests can partake in a pancake breakfast and a free family festival with carnival games, relays, open swim and much more. April 13 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team won a pitchers duel, 3-1, featuring Nordhoff’s Luke Boyd (4-2) and the Warriors’ Sal Delgado (4-2). Malcolm Gordon scored in the first, having reached base on a single and moving to second on a Jonah Spach sacrifice bunt; then advancing to third and scoring on a couple of wild pitches. Gordon figured in the scoring again in the fifth inning as he drove in pinch runner Thomas Hugo from first base with a double and later stole home for the final Warrior run. Delgado had a complete game win, striking out seven, scattering seven hits and allowing the single earned run. Boyd struck out 15 Warriors and surrendered just two hits and three earned runs.

April 14 - The Carpinteria High School baseball team beat Nordhoff 15-1 in a TriValley League game at John Calderwood Field. Junior right hander David Martinez notched the victory as he held the Rangers to a single earned run on six hits, striking out three and walking one over five innings. The Warrior offense came up with a first inning two-out RBI single by Diego Contreras and a second inning two-out, two RBI double by Sal Delgado. In the Warrior seven-run third, Jonah Spach had a two-out, three RBI triple which was followed by a two-run homer by Martinez. Evan Duffield capped the scoring in the sixth inning with a two-out, two RBI single of his own.

Boys golf

April 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team continued play in the Frontier League Golf Conference. Malibu continued to hold onto first place, led by medalist Quincey Allen with an 83 and teammate Daniel Haynes with an 86. The Warriors played with just three players due to illness with Sebastian Beltran leading the way with a 115, Elder Santillan shooting a 126 and James Irrabon tallying a 136.

April 13 – The Cate School baseball team started Frontier League play, scratching across a 3-2 victory in eight innings in a road victory at Villanova. After falling behind 1-0, the Rams took the lead in the fourth when senior Jake Dexter-Meldrum doubled home junior Dylan Ell. Ell would go 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior Bryce Huerta went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases on his birthday, bringing home the go-ahead run on a Wildcat error. “Junior Joel Revo turned in a gusty performance on the mound for the Rams, going all eight innings while striking out six and walking just one,” said Cate assistant coach Dave Soto.

April 15 – The Cate School baseball team improved to 2-0 in Frontier League play with a 12-4 victory over Villanova. After falling behind 2-0, Ram senior Dean Smith hit a solo homer over the left field fence. Cate added five more runs in the first frame.

Smith led the way with three hits and four RBI. Senior Joel Revo, freshman Jack Deardorff and senior Dylan Ell all had a hit apiece, as did senior Duffy Montgomery.

Senior pitcher Jake Dexter-Meldrum picked up the win, tossing six strong innings, striking out five Wildcats and giving up six hits.

The dynamic painting duo of Katrina and Ashley Caillez transformed a mess of peeling paint into a work of fine art during Carpinteria Beautiful’s annual bus bench painting day on April 16. The twins logged their fourth years on the bench-painting project.

Stand up straight. Allow your feet to be shoulder-width apart and parallel to each other. From the bottom of the feet, ground yourself, connecting to mother earth as if you are a big old tree with roots reaching deep into the earth. place an invisible gold thread coming out of the top of your head.

Allow it to gently pull you upward toward the sky. Straighten the spine and stack the vertebra evenly.

Now, inhale, bring the arms up over the head and grasp the left wrist. exhale and bend to the right gently tugging on the wrist to stretch the left side of the body.

Look down to keep the neck soft and relaxed. hold for two or three breaths and enjoy the stretch. on an exhale, release and do the same stretch on the opposite side.

Yoga is about awareness. At this point, ask yourself these questions. how does each side feel? do they feel the same or different from each other? how does your body feel? Are you still aware of and in tune with the fullness of your breath? is your mind still focused and attentive to the stretch you are doing right now? these questions will help bring you into the awareness of the moment, which is true yoga.

You will feel peaceful and relaxed.

Boys & Girls Club unveils new gym floor

The Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club debuted its new gymnasium floor with a ribbon cutting ceremony on the evening of April 18. The floor, installed by SportCourt, will be broken in by the club’s 2016 Youth indoor Soccer League. donations from both LA84 and the Walter and brenda barrows Foundation made the project possible. many community members as well as boys & Girls Club kids showed up for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Dr. Scott Kellermann, MD offered the Carpinteria Morning Rotary an inspirational presentation on his work with Batwa pygmies in Uganda. Kellerman and his wife, Carol, traveled to Uganda in 2000 to assess the needs of the Batwa pygmies of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. After observing heartbreaking conditions, the Kellermans moved to uganda in 2001 and stayed there working with the tribes until 2009.

Initially, the couple focused on learning the language and customs of the Batwa pygmies while visiting remote settlements and holding mobile medical clinics under trees. With the support of Rotary International, a small clinic was built, expanding to a community hospital, which is now rated one of the best hospitals in Uganda.

In 2012, Scott received one of the highest honors bestowed by Rotary International, the Rotary “Service Above Self” award for exemplary humanitarian service. And in 2015 both Scott and Carol Kellermann were honored as unsung heroes of Compassion by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, presented to individuals who have made the world a better place.

bringing together representatives of all 534 Rotary districts from 200 countries and territories worldwide, the Rotary International Council on Legislation met April 10 to 15 in Chicago with Carpinteria Rotarian Wade Nomura in attendance as one of 523 certified delegates. The meetings, held once every three years, offer the only opportunity for Rotary international and the Rotary Foundation to make changes to the governance documents. “Creating policy for such an international mix has its challenges, but it is fascinating when you look at the intent of some of these items and why they are prioritized. It was a truly outstanding experience, and makes me appreciate how we do things here in Carpinteria even more,” said Nomura, who also serves on the Carpinteria City Council.

Local youths honored with Club 52 membership

dozens of local youths were inducted into the elite Club 52 on April 12. the club honors members of the Carpinteria boys & Girls Club who have attended programs at least 52 days this year. At the recognition ceremony, silver membership cards were awarded for their commitment to the club. Studies show that children who attend the club consistently develop better social skills, have extra time to focus on their education, and receive one-on-one help with homework or creative activities.

Some members have already surpassed the 52-day minimum. Longtime member Alejandro Marin has attended the club 83 days in 2016. In a few months, the club will present exclusive gold membership cards to the members who qualify for Club 105. members who attend the boys & Girls Club for 105 days or more are more likely to graduate high school and pursue a higher education. Club 105 members are honored with Very Important Kid (VIK) privileges such as front of the line passes, priority Games Room checkout and exclusive parties.

Rotary TV gets YouTube station

Rotary tV episodes hosted by Carpinteria Rotarian Wade Nomura now have their own station on YouTube. At WeAreRotary.TV, viewers can watch Nomura interview a wide range of individuals involved in the international service organization. Newly recorded shows also are being aired on tVSb on channel 17 every other Saturday at 2 p.m. They can also be seen on Monday at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at 7 p.m. and thursday at 7 p.m.

Garcias gander at Grand Canyon

A spring break family trip through the Southwest made memories for the Garcia family. They visited Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Durango and Mesa Verde, Colo., as well as the Four Corners Monument, where Dustin, Amanda and Abigail straddled the intersection of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. The kids, along with parents Juan and Cynthia, topped off their trip at Pirate’s Cove Resort in Needles, Calif.

Couple calls it 17 good years

Bob and Janice Gronek traveled to Temecula to celebrate 17 years since their first date at the Pechanga Casino and Resort. They’ve been married four years and still celebrate fondly their first date of March 29, 1999, at Chad’s Steakhouse in Santa Barbara.
