Mask-making brigade

Spearheaded by 80-year-old Pat Beals, a group of neighbors on Arbol Verde Street have launched a grassroots mask-making brigade that has produced over 3,000 cloth masks since late February. Calling themselves the Neighbor to Neighbor group, just over a dozen people have made enough masks for retail, food and medical workers in Carpinteria, and have now set their sights on getting a protective mask on every adult in the valley. City launches Covid-19 online resource hub Providing residents with online access to local government programs and services is one of the city of Carpinteria’s ongoing priorities. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has amplified the need for residents to connect with important resources. To best serve the community, the city has completely updated their website at carpinteria.ca.us and created an auxiliary site at carpinteriahub.com that is dedicated to assisting residents through the pandemic and recovery.

“We’re excited to introduce the public to our new city website,” said City Manager Dave Durflinger. “Designed with users in mind, it’s easy to navigate and has a fresh and contemporary look. It offers residents, businesses and visitors access to the city’s wide range of services, programs, public meetings, local information and contacts.”

The new website is mobile responsive and greatly improves the user experience by automatically responding to various screen sizes. It also includes special features for ADA accessibility, a multi-language translation tool (Spanish, French, Italian and German), and utilizes the latest technology and strategies for maximizing search engine performance and searchability.

Within Carpinteria’s Covid-19 Community Hub, vast amounts of pandemic information and resources have been distilled into content relevant to the Carpinteria community. Updates are posted regularly, and there are links to carefully vetted resources. The page was designed to answer the wide range of questions that arise for Carpinterians, and it includes resources from a number of community non-profits and agencies

working to keep locals safe and healthy.

Additionally, the Covid-19 Community Hub provides a space for local businesses to reach supporters during this challenging time. The “Support Local Businesses” page gives stores and restaurants an opportunity to create their own listings to identify hours, special services and any other updates.

“We understand that high-quality, accurate information is paramount in this challenging time,” said Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura. “This new site will help connect people to the resources they need. We also hope that it draws attention

to the creative adaptations made by shops and restaurants. I implore Carpinterians to step up to safely support these local businesses.”

CUSD schools closed for remainder of school year Distance learning to continue

Carpinteria school campuses will remain closed for the rest of the school year—announced Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby on Wednesday, April 1.

Rigby’s statement followed California Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement earlier in the day that California educators should operate “with the expectation now that schools will not reopen” for the remainder of the academic year.

While school sites are closed, distance learning will continue. “Our staff, teachers and administrators are working hard to plan and deliver high-quality distance

learning,” said Rigby, “to work on connectivity and technology needs that address equity and access for all students.”

This week, students were given computers and workbooks to study remotely.

Hotspots will be distributed to students who need internet access as soon they are available.

Despite schools being closed, CUSD will continue to provide sack lunches Monday to Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at Aliso and Canalino schools and Monte Vista Park. All children under the age of 18 are welcome to pick up a sack lunch.

MTD has suspended Carpinteria’s Seaside Shuttle until further notice.

Seaside Shuttle suspended, Line 20 still in service

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Santa Barbara MTD has lowered service levels across the county. In Carpinteria, the Seaside Shuttle has been removed from service until further notice. The reduction is due to reduced ridership and MTD workforce constraints. Carpinteria’s Line 20 to and from Santa Barbara remains in service. Passengers with questions about schedules and affected routes can call (805) 963-3366 for assistance.

City: short-term rentals only for essential workers

Beginning this week, the city of Carpinteria has restricted short-term lodging only to people who are working in industries identified as essential.

Owners and operators of short-term vacation rentals and hotels/motels have been notified by the city that they can

only rent to guest users who are permitted to travel under Governor Newsom’s stay at home order, according to a statement on Facebook the city posted on April 3.

The restriction is intended to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“Great job, Team Carpinteria!” Don Hall of United Boys & Girls Clubs, Carpinteria exclaimed. Yes! I want everyone to know how well coordinated the leaders of organizations in Carpinteria are right now. This strong team is built on years of relationships. And, in a weird way, the experience of working together during the fires and mudslides helped prepare us for this too. The level of coordination among the city, nonprofits, the school district and businesses is darn impressive. I am truly honored and proud to be a part of Team Carpinteria during this pandemic emergency.

How well we take care of our most vulnerable neighbors is a measure of community strength and resilience. To support those who are older and medically fragile because they are more at risk, it is perfectly clear that we should be staying home as much as possible, physically distancing and wearing masks when we need to be in public. The community is also ready to help those who have lost income and are now struggling.

The Carpinteria Children’s Project’s tagline is “Nurturing successful children, healthy families and strong community” and it is guiding us now. We’ve always known that organizations working together strengthens the community. For CCP, leading some of that work has always been a part of what we do.

Until three weeks ago, our daily work has also been to serve young children in our classrooms. In supporting children, we also support parents, both English and Spanish-speaking, with parenting classes, available income supports, and connections to family counseling and therapy.

We’re shifting to meet these needs now: Our 15 staff members in early childhood education are embracing new roles and developing new programs; all 24 of us are quickly learning Zoom and Google Drive; and we are knowledgeable about new resources that respond to the pandemic. All this is to say, we are here to help you and your neighbors, whether or not we have met you before.

Dozens of health care workers infected with Covid-19 County crests 200 cases including first two deaths

By DeBra Herrick Thirty-seven health care workers in Santa Barbara County have tested positive for Covid-19, according to the county’s Public Health Department. The number of cases across the county continues to grow, with 26 new cases confirmed on April 7, bringing the total to 218 cases at time of press.

Of the 218 cases, 120 people are recovering at home and 42 are recovering in a hospital (19 in an Intensive Care Unit). Fifty-one patients have fully recovered, and three are pending an update. Two deaths have been reported.

The first patient to succumb to Covid-19 was a man in his 60s with underlying health conditions residing in North County. He died at Marian Medical Center. The county’s second novel coronavirus death was a South County resident in their 60s with underlying conditions who died while receiving treatment in a hospital.

On announcing the first Covid-19 fatality, Santa Barbara County Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of this patient. While we have expected more cases, this death is an unfortunate milestone in our efforts to fight this disease, and one that we never wanted to see.”

After the second death, Ansorg again offered condolences and urged the community to adhere to public health orders to slow the spread of the virus. “We continue to ask for the support of every resident as we

move forward and get through this difficult time. Only with the help of every person in our community will we make a difference in slowing the spread of this virus,” said Ansorg.

The virus has been contracted across all age groups, including five cases in children under 17. The gender breakdown is 83 female, 134 male and one unknown.

The South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria have 14 confirmed cases. The largest clusters are currently in Santa Maria (59), Lompoc (55) and Santa Barbara (33). By age range, the groups reporting the most cases are 50- to 69-year-olds (91) and 30- to 49-year-olds (72).

“If you are healthy and not at higher risk, please connect with friends and loved ones who would be considered more vulnerable, and offer support,” said Do-Reynoso.

Public Health is prioritizing investigations for cases with exposures in healthcare and other congregate settings to identify persons who may have been exposed.

Mandated social distancing measures are in place to slow the spread of the virus.

Public Health reported that 1,514 tests have been administered, including 1,294 negative results and two inconclusive.

While most cases of Covid-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, the county’s growing case numbers and first deaths from Covid-19 underscore the urgent need

for all residents to take extra steps to protect those who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions, such as, diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency and asthma.

Utilities and Special Districts Resources Special districts and utilities continue to operate during the Covid-19 pandemic, and many are providing support for those in need during the crisis.

Carpinteria Valley Water District

The CVWD office is currently closed to walk-in customers but will remain open to assist customers and conduct business by telephone. Public meetings will be held telephonically until further notice. Agendas and details on how to participate are available online.

On April 2, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that will restrict water shutoffs to homes and small businesses while the state responds to the Covid-19 pandemic. Water will also be restored for occupied residences that may have had their water shut off as of March 4, which is when the governor proclaimed a state of emergency.

Carpinteria Sanitary District

The public counter at the district’s administration office is closed, but the district is functioning with limited staff.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted many aspects of life in Carpinteria. The city is making efforts to connect the public with information about these impacts on its new website, carpinteriahub.com. The following updates have been posted as of April 8.

Public parks, trails and beaches

Public parks, trails and beaches remain open to the public, but social distancing must be practiced in these spaces. City playgrounds and barbecue areas are currently closed. Some public parking lots have been closed to discourage over-crowding.

Residents who witness public gatherings in violation of social distancing orders are encouraged to contact Code Compliance Supervisor Ron Alonzo at (805) 755-4408 or the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office at (805) 683-2724 .

Carpinteria State Beach

California State Parks has suspended all camping reservations until further notice.

Camping is closed at Carpinteria State Beach, but day use facilities are currently open.

Grocery shopping

Both of Carpinteria’s grocery stores are open and have designated shopping hours for seniors and the immunosuppressed: Albertsons, 7 to 9 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays Smart & Final, 7:30 to 8 a.m. daily.

Carpinteria Unified School District

All CUSD school sites are closed and will reopen when state and local authorities deem it safe to do so.

All branches of the Santa Barbara Library System are closed until further notice. Book drops are also closed. Through a pilot program, library card holders can order up to four library items that will be delivered to their door. Library card holders can also stream and download content through the website, which also offers learning at home resources for parents and children.

Homelessness

Freedom Warming Centers have suspended their services due to the risks of Covid-19 spreading within a vulnerable population.

Carpinteria Health Care Center

The Carpinteria Clinic is still operating and serving patients with essential needs.

Patients should call before visiting the clinic at 931 Walnut Ave. in order to ensure staff members are prepared to receive them. Call (805) 560-1050 for more information.

Parking Enforcement

City of Carpinteria Code Compliance officers are not ticketing vehicles parked in areas posted for street sweeping and timed parking (with the exception of 72-hour parking limits). Enforcement of disabled parking, red, yellow, and passenger loading zones will continue during this period. Enforcement of timed parking and street sweeping restrictions is expected to recommence on May 4.

Department of Motor Vehicles

The California DMV has asked California law enforcement to exercise discretion when enforcing driver license and vehicle registration expiration dates for members of the vulnerable population for 60 days beginning March 16.

The DMV is taking this action so that at-risk populations can avoid required visits to DMV field offices for driver license or vehicle registration renewals.

Metropolitan Transportation District (MTD)

MTD is offering no fee services during the pandemic. Currently Carpinteria bus line 20 remains in service, but the Seaside Shuttle was removed from service until further notice. Visit sbmtd.gov for updates.

Amtrak

The Pacific Surfliner that operates between San Luis Obispo and San Diego is now running on a reduced schedule. The most up-to-date schedules are available when booking a trip on Amtrak.com and in the mobile app.

HELP of Carpinteria

HELP has temporarily suspended its transportation service in order to follow the governor’s orders to social distance. HELP has entered into a partnership with Easy Lift to provide its riders with services. Call (805) 681-1181 to schedule services.

Trash Collection

Items intended for solid waste pick-up that are outside of bins may not be collected. This effort will allow haulers to remain in their vehicles, thus reducing the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

On Sunday, April 5, an updated public health order went into effect in Santa Barbara County. The new “stay well at home” order, issued by Santa Barbara County Health Offer Dr. Henning Ansorg, tightens and clarifies the stipulations laid out in California Governor Gavin Newsom’s March 19 executive order for all residents to stay in their residences except for essential needs and activities.

The county’s order, which is intended to reduce the exposure and spread of Covid-19, will be in effect until May 4, 2020, unless extended. New restrictions include mandatory face masks for food workers and the closure of all campgrounds and RV parks. Find a full list of the restrictions below.

In a separate public health order, the county mandated that all individuals have their temperatures taken before entering certain licensed facilities and other agencies including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, long term care facilities and home health agencies among others.

Residents and business operators who violate or fail to comply with the order may receive misdemeanor citations, along with fines up to $1,000, imprisonment or both. Violators are also subject to civil enforcement actions including fines or civil penalties per violation per day, injunctive relief, and attorneys’ fees and costs.

Santa Barbara County Public Health Executive Order

• Food facilities must offer food to go only and comply with hygiene and social distancing standards or be subject to permit suspension and mandatory closure.

• Food facilities, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and coffee shops may only remain open to offer food for pick-up, delivery or drive-through.

• All food must be in containers.

• Food must be consumed off-site. No provision for on-site dining allowed.

• All food workers must wear facial covers (covering nose and mouth) supplied by the employer and maintained in a clean, sanitary manner.

• Six-foot spacing must be maintained between customers.

• Workers may not work while ill.

• Food facility employees or volunteers who have had symptoms of Covid-19 shall return to work only when they have been free of symptoms for at least 72 hours without medication and at least seven days have elapsed since the onset of symptoms.

The health officer recommends that food facility operators actively screen all workers, volunteers and outside vendors for Covid-19 symptoms upon each individual’s arrival at the food facility. Individuals who exhibit symptoms consistent with Covid-19 as defined by the Santa Barbara County Health Officer shall be immediately excluded from the facility.

The following businesses are ordered to close without exception: • Bars and nightclubs that do not serve food; • Movie theaters, live performance venues, bowling alleys and arcades; • Gyms, fitness centers and aquatic centers; • Wineries, breweries and tap rooms that provide tastings; • Trophy shops or trophy businesses; • Tattoo parlors, tattoo businesses, tattoo artists and body art facilities; • Barbers, hair salons and hairstylists; • Campgrounds and RV parks, public and private. Only those who certify that the RV is their primary residence may be permitted to stay in the RV park; • Nail salons, manicurists and pedicurists to close except for medical necessity, e.g. medical treatment for diabetes; • Day spas and massage parlors, except as required for prescribed medical treatment.

• Swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, saunas, steam rooms (except those in a single-family residence or medical setting, with medically prescribed therapy carried out with individuals six feet apart).

California expands unemployment insurance Self-employed, part-time and gig workers eligible

cVN rePOrT The novel coronavirus pandemic has caused an historic surge of 10 million unemployment claims across the country in just the last two weeks. In response, last week, the federal government signed a $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus response legislation, the CARE Act, including new unemployment benefits for selfemployed, part-time and gig workers who in the past haven’t been eligible for such benefits.

“These workers were made eligible because the economic damage caused by the coronavirus isn’t discriminating between different types of workers and so neither should federal benefits,” said California Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Non-traditional workers comprise one quarter of all workers in California. The state has two million residents who are self-employed and 3.4 million who work a part-time job. Additionally, California has a robust gig economy with millions of independent contractors who work through online platforms such as Uber and Lyft.

“I encourage all Californians who have lost their jobs because of the pandemic to apply for unemployment benefits if needed. Even if you weren’t eligible in the past, you may be now,” said Feinstein. To help residents determine if they qualify and how to apply, the National Democratic Committee provides the following frequently asked questions.

How do I file for unemployment insurance?

Californians can apply for unemployment benefits through the California Employment Development Department (EDD). The best way to begin the process is by visiting edd.ca.gov. Claims can be filed online Sunday, 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 2 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday 2 a.m. to 8 p.m.

How much can I get from unemployment insurance?

The exact amount you can receive depends on your previous earnings. It will be between $40 and $450 per week. Additionally, between now and July 31, $600 will be added to every unemployment compensation check. So, no one eligible will receive less than $600 per week.

Expanded eligibility for unemployment insurance will be in effect until Dec. 31, 2020. A $600 additional benefit will be added to unemployment compensation received for weeks between when the bill is enacted and July 31, 2020.

What if I’m not eligible for traditional unemployment insurance?

The CARES Act temporarily expands unemployment insurance to cover individuals who are not traditionally covered, including the self-employed, gig workers, independent contractors and workers with irregular work histories. It also expands the list of allowable criteria for claiming unemployment compensation to include many reasons related to the Covid-19 public health emergency.

What if I’ve been out of work because of Covid-19 for several weeks already?

If you exhaust the weeks of unemployment compensation available to you through your state’s laws, you will be eligible for an additional 13 weeks of benefits. These benefits will be federally funded, but you will still receive them through your state.

How long will the expanded benefits be in place?

To help get the word out, Alarcon recently completed a Q & A with CVN to help residents understand what the Census is and why it is important that everyone participates.

City doubles down: no gatherings allowed

As warmer weather and Easter approach, the city of Carpinteria is making an increased effort to remind residents that staying at home and social distancing remain critical. Distancing measures are crucial to slow the spread of Covid-19 and to avoid overwhelming our healthcare system.

Many California municipalities have closed outdoor spaces such as parks, trails and beaches due to reports of group gatherings and failure to follow social distancing orders.

This has resulted in increased demand on Carpinteria’s open spaces. The city of Carpinteria has taken additional measures to discourage public gatherings and congestion in public spaces. Public parking lots that serve the Bluffs Preserve and Franklin Trail are closed, and beach and picnic area parking lots will be closed on Easter weekend. New signage also has been posted in key areas to convey the urgency of the message.

Carpinterians have abundant access to nature and open space. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these spaces offer important opportunities for individuals and families to enjoy mental and physical health benefits; however, the city warns that for these areas to remain open, users must follow social distancing orders.

“The city wishes residents a happy Easter and emphasizes the need to make it a safe Easter for the sake of the whole community,” stated a news release from the city on April 8.

Beach Adirondack honors Carpinterian Foster Markolf

An artpiece and memorial Adirondack bench for the late Foster Markolf has been installed near the lifeguard tower at the end of Holly and Sandyland avenues on Carpinteria City Beach.

Markolf passed away in 2018, and was an avid volunteer and cheerleader for the town he loved. He served on the boards of Friends of the Library, Carpinteria Beautiful, Carpinteria Arts Center and Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum. He also volunteered for Santa Barbara Task Force For the Homeless and advocated for the anti-smoking ordinance and plastic bag ban.

The bench was commissioned by the Markolf family with support from Carpinteria Beautiful and donated to the city of Carpinteria for all to enjoy. The mosaic embedded in the back was designed by Markolf ’s wife Rosa and lovingly installed by Rosa and her grandson William. It reads, “Give as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

The overlook area is relatively narrow, and it is difficult to maintain a safe distance from others, so volunteers are trying to station themselves during low tides at either end of the beach closure. As a result, there is little data on numbers of disturbances and visitors. This report covers March 22-April 5.

Natural History Notes

The six-month beach closure provides a respite and sanctuary not just for the harbor seals, but also for many other species. On occasion the area is a haven for many pelicans and cormorants, as well as other species sought by avid bird watchers. Locals have noticed an increase in pelicans on city beaches, also as a result of the stay at home orders.

Disturbances

Two beach walking disturbances were recorded during the few hours covered from the blufftop, but footprints through the rookery have been observed a few additional times, with panicked seal tracks indicating they were frightened to the sea.

But one family’s yard stands out among the rest, the drought tolerant SoCal paradise of the Zamora family home on 1385 Linden Ave., the winner of this month’s Carpinteria Beautiful Lookin’ Good Award.

The Zamora Family has lived in

their home for more than 50 years. Mr. Zamora built the lovely white wall spanning the front yard and their friend, Mr. Castillo, crafted the detailed iron work.

How staying home is helping the planet Cvn

living the green life erin maker While trying to think about what I could write about for this column, I found myself struggling. I don’t need to go down the road of “things are rough” since I know everyone is feeling that way (and if you aren’t, please share your secret with the rest of us). Every aspect of our lives has been affected by the global pandemic. And I am not going to tell you that the current situation is good for the environment. There may be some temporary positive environmental impacts, but those come at a great cost and other areas that we had been improving our impacts on are suffering. When measuring environmental impacts, we should be looking at the overall health, not just one area.

Right now, the future is uncertain. And that seems scary. But if we start thinking long term as a society, it may be possible to make changes that have lasting positive consequences. A healthy planet means a lower risk of disease for all living things. While that perspective may seem trivial right now, it is very important that we make changes to reduce the likelihood of another global health emergency even while we are dealing with the current one.

You see, the virus currently disrupting our lives is what is called a zoonotic disease, one that happens when pathogens transfer from animals to humans. And no one person or population is to blame for that. The United Nations has identified multiple factors that increase the risk of these diseases developing, and I am going to touch on a few of them.

The activities that we associate with civilization have altered the landscape of the planet and brought us closer into contact with wild areas.

I have written before about the urbanwildland interface in relation to fires, and how as we move further into the wild lands, we increase the risk of extreme impacts to our homes from wildfire. This is also true in relation to infectious diseases.

Increasingly, habitats are fragmented as we make room for homes and agriculture to meet societal demands. There are solutions to this, but it means changing the way we live. Building sustainable communities that encourage urban infill and alternative transportation is one way to reduce these impacts. Eating less meat is another.

Climate change associated with greenhouse gas emissions can greatly increase the problem. Drastic temperature changes associated with climate change can affect the survival rate of the microbes that cause infectious diseases. Evidence sug-

CHS Alum Tori Kelley keeps climbing to higher levels

Carpinteria High School graduate Tori Kelley, class of 2017, continues to reach new heights. A former Warriors basketball and softball player, Kelley wasted no time adjusting to college life when she entered Santa Barbara City College. Under the guidance of Vaqueros Women’s basketball coach Sandrine Krul, Kelley walked on to play for the school. Three years later, she helped lead the squad to the playoffs and was named to the Academic All-State Basketball Team by the California Com-

munity College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association with a hefty 4.0 GPA. Growing up, Kelley played many sports—tennis, swimming, roller hockey and golf. She even road dirt bikes. She played varsity basketball her freshman year and all four years at CHS. Her sophomore year, she was named to the 2014-15 All-Frontier League team, and the Warriors took first place that season with a league record of 11-3 and a 14-9

On April 3, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) canceled all 10 CIF Sections, including the Southern Section (SS), officially ending the high school spring sports season for 2020.

“While I have the ultimate responsibility to make decisions that are in the best interest of our section, I do not do so in a vacuum,” wrote CIF Commissioner Rob Wigod in a letter concerning the effects of the Covid-19 virus. “Specifically, the advice of the Centers of Disease Control, as well as other federal, state and local health authorities were vital towards navigating our path forward.”

Wigod, who has been with the organization for 20 years, stated, “I realize that the goals, dreams and aspirations of student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, principals, parents, officials and fans have been dashed by this decision. That weighed very heavily on the ultimate decision that we had to make.”

This also puts an end to the pursuit of a second straight championship for the Cate girls lacrosse team, currently ranked eighth in Division II in the CIF-SS polls. It also means, the Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team’s quest for a second consecutive Citrus Coast League title is squashed, and the CHS track and field team’s 101st Russell Cup Meet will not take place.

Cate School recently announced their award winners from the 2019-20 winter sports season. For boys basketball: seniors Ethan Ng and Khadim Pouye and junior Nkemka Chukwumerije were named to the All-Frontier League First Team. Second Team honors went to seniors Thomas Nettesheim and Parker May and Honorable Mention status was earned by sophomores Mason Oetgen and Tyler Tom. For girls basketball, the Rams, who captured the Frontier League title with and 8-0 record, had seven players named to the All-League team. The Most Valuable Player award was earned by senior Maya Blattberg. Joining her on the First Team were sophomore Meena Baher and junior Lily Zanze. Kelley played softball under coach Henry Gonzales for three years. In 2017, her senior year, she helped lead the Warriors to a 19-8 overall record as the team finished tied for second in the Frontier League with a 7-3 record. “Henry was always a strict coach and expected a lot from you, but I’m happy he did that because it always made me push myself in practices and games, so, it was a good experience that prepared me for college sports,” said Kelley.

After Kelley reached out to Krul about joining the team at SBCC, the coach invited her to try out for the Women’s basketball team. Her college career hit a bit of a roadblock though when she suffered an injury her freshman year. “I wasn’t able to be 100 percent healthy to compete on the team,” said Kelley. As a result, Kelley decided to redshirt (sit out) and began her first year on the team as a sophomore.

Practices were a lot more competitive at SBCC. “In college, you are constantly fighting for a spot every day and if you don’t compete and push yourself to get better, you don’t play,” said Kelley. To make matters more difficult, at five feet, two inches tall, Kelley was one of the smaller players on the team. “I knew I was the shortest player, but I didn’t want that to stop me and I also didn’t want to compare myself to anyone.”

Kelley had always made up for her lack of height by being a good shooter.

Her senior year in high school, she scored 18 points in two consecutive games in February of 2017. As a senior at SBCC, she was a big contributor as well. With Kelley and a few other former local high school players on the squad, the Vaqueros jump started the team to a

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH We’re rounding the corner on a month now of sheltering-in-place. Aside from the uncertainty of this time, we’re enjoying being together as a family. The morning rush to school is no longer an issue, and we’re able to focus the hours of study in the areas our daughter is working to improve on. The fridge is full. No one we know has been stricken. Still, I live in a bit of a haze, mentally (more so than my usual out-to-lunchness), similar to my state of mind through the long weeks of the Thomas Fire, with something like a running list of shifting priorities and threat assessments that I can never quite nail down.

On the first weekend of the governor’s stay-at-home order, we took the exception to go outside for exercise and rode our bikes down to the beach. It was a beautiful spring day and many others were out just like us. But then my wife and I began noticing groups of adults strolling together. Surely, they weren’t all in the same households, right? There were fewer than 10 people together, but it didn’t seem there was much social distancing going on. A friend of ours came by, keeping a good 10-paces out and explaining that the friend she was with lived alone, suggesting, it seemed, that he was somehow immune.

While the people I’ve encountered on the street and in the store have all been courteous, this invisible coronavirus threat brings an added level of scrutiny to interactions, and I find myself parsing neighbors’ words to tease-out where exposure may have occurred. Mention of a visit to grandparents’ houses, or that a cousin came down from Oregon fills me with outrage and revulsion in equal measure. The kids who were joyfully playing together after school a month ago now only say hi from behind a window screen.

I had forgotten our home-spun hand sanitizer (diluted hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol and a touch of teatree oil) and our youngest one, naturally, rubbed his eyes and stuck his fingers in his mouth. Suddenly, our little cross-town bike adventure took on a more ominous dimension. Riding home along Carpinteria Avenue a guy at a motel yelled at us, “What part of stay-at-home don’t you understand?” But come to think of it, what the hell was he doing at a motel?

A guy in Culver City, Los Angeles ordered a surfboard a week ago, and I was able to get the blank for it from Fiberglass Hawaii in Ventura before they shut down (although they now operate by telephone order and drop-off supplies for pick up from the loading area of their building). The place where I’m shaping now in Ventura is a converted shipping container in a boat yard. One guy laminates surfboards in a shop space separate from mine, and another three workers are across the lot, laying up and sanding fiberglass and resin on the boats in full safety gear. Still, there is the bathroom we all use, and the simple fact of being out in the world even if we are keeping our

distance. I believe in the social contract, that we all have to do our part, but I’ve got to try and keep some income coming as relief payments have yet to arrive in any form. I’m definitely bringing the hand sanitizer and using it with every move in and out of the shaping bay, but every action is haunted—from touching the door handle on my car, to opening the gate to the yard.

I read a post recently in which a woman wrote of her experiences cruising on a sailboat, equating this time of limited interaction to the closed-off world of life at sea. Tasks like cooking and doing the dishes are accomplished now in a less time-conscious way. Since making plans is on hold, we have only to react to the conditions at hand, which is an act of surfing. With most commercial activity and travel having been halted, I find myself hoping for a new way of being in the world, one that is much more localized and moves in an expanded sense of time.

Perhaps it’s all been moving too fast in the 21st century, and if we nurture a return to the old ways—gardens and music, sails and oars and bicycles—we’ll find the magic and focus many of us look for so continuously on our smartphones.

Deputies responded to a report of a Hispanic male in his 30s wearing dark clothing who used a sling shot to shatter the caller’s father’s vehicle window.

The caller believes the suspect is her exboyfriend. Deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the suspect.

2 p.m. / Phone Scam / 4400 block Via Real

A man was scammed out of $2,500. The suspect called him and identified himself as a police officer and told him he had a warrant out for his arrest for calling a prostitution service. The man agreed to pay the money to avoid being arrested.

3:09 a.m. / Warrant for Arrest / Via Real and Bailard Avenue

Deputies were called to a residential community at Via Real and Bailard Avenue to look for a person of interest in a vandalism case. The sergeant contacted a subject at the intersection who appeared to be the suspect in question. The subject was not the person of interest, but which lead to the discovery of a concealed dirk (crowbar), syringe, burg tools and that the man had warrants for his arrest including a No Bail warrant out of San Luis Obispo County. Deputies responded to the bus stop in front of 7-11 for a report of a male punching a female several times. The man and his girlfriend were contacted sitting on the bench. They denied any physical fight. An employee at an adjacent service station witnessed the man punching the woman several times in the face and headbutting her. The man was arrested.

A traffic stop was initiated for an expired registration and during the contact, it appeared the passenger was concealing something in her hand. It was discovered she had a torn-off corner of a baggie containing three small bindles of heroin.

The woman also admitted to having used syringes in a bag in the trunk. She was cited for the violations and released.

Movies to watch while on lockdown And he wins! He overcomes! It makes hardship feel a bit like an adventure—and temporary, and overcomeable.

“Bloodsport”: This Jean-Claude Van Damme cult classic scores very high in bonus points for over-the-top, cheesy action. It’s extremely over-the-top, extremely cheesy. Much like many of my late-night snacks. But, hey, both go down pretty easy, even if I don’t feel great about it after.

m at t d u n c a n We’re all on lockdown. No one’s going anywhere, including the movie theater.

So instead of reviewing one newly released movie that no one can see right now, I figured I’d offer some suggestions for movies you can stream on Netflix, unless otherwise noted, while dealing with this coronavirus crisis.

Now, different people deal with crises in different ways. Some look for morale boosters. Others embrace the darkness.

Some seek distraction from their troubles.

Others just want to rage. When it comes to binge-watching our anxieties away, there’s no one size fits all. So I’m going to break it down by categories of preferred cinematic medicine.

“The Hangover”: This surprisingly non-obnoxious comedy starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis brings some much-needed levity to the possibility of things just getting worse and worse.

“Romancing the Stone”: This throwback starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner has action, adventure and heartwarming romance. It’s not a very serious movie—but that may be just what you need.

Comfort watching & pick-me-up flicks

“Pandemic”: If you’re looking for something in the non-fiction category, this documentary is as interesting as it is terrifying.

“Strictly Ballroom”: Made in Baz Luhrmann’s (“Moulin Rouge!” “The Great Gatsby”) typical over-the-top, flashy style, this movie might add a little pep to your step by getting you into something quite a bit less serious than a pandemic.

“Kingpin”: This movie is goofy. And it’s got Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid. And it was made in the 90s … all the ingredients necessary for boosted spirits.

“Outbreak”: This obvious choice starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman will show you just how bad a pandemic could be.

Action

The “Indiana Jones” series: Harrison Ford takes on what ails the world in a swashbuckling, lighthearted sort of way.

Apocalyptic & otherwise terrible scenarios

“I am Legend” (Amazon Prime): This post-apocalyptic movie, featuring a nice performance by Will Smith, will show you just how bad a pandemic could get if researchers don’t miraculously cure it (also see “Zombieland” on Hulu).

“There Will Be Blood”: Finally, if you want to take a different angle on this mess and bathe in the destructive, inhumane instincts of capitalism—and an amazing performance by Daniel Day Lewis—this P. T. Anderson classic is a good bet.

While in the territory of riding the pandemic wave, you might consider some other themes. For example, we were told that the private sector—big tech, in particular—is going to save us. So maybe watch “Steve Jobs” or “Social Network.”

On the other hand, if you just want to get away from it all—if you want to be transported to a distant land or another time—“Hook” is an excellent choice, as are “Once Upon A Time in the West” and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” In a related vein, if you want to imagine a future where things are pretty much all right, check out “Her.” And if you just need to have your faith in humanity restored, then, please, please watch “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

(Hulu, HBO). Mr. Rogers—he’s there for us.

Speaking of Mr. Rogers, most (if not all) of the above recommendations are for adults, not kids. But, for many of us, keeping kids entertained is a sanity essential during lockdown. So, for kids, I recommend the following: Get Disney Plus. Go crazy.

Girls Inc. stays connected

When Carpinteria Girls Inc. closed its campus, staff began conducting wellness calls to all Girls Inc. families. “We wanted to let girls and parents know that we were still there for them, and only a call or video call away,” said Kenya Rodriguez, teen programs manager.

Arbol Verde neighbors make 3,000 masks to help keep Carpinteria safe

By DeBra Herrick PHotos By kern Ducote In late February, 80-year-old Pat Beals, a retired Halloween costume manufacturer, started making cloth face masks in her Arbol Verde garage. By mid-March, over a dozen Concha Loma neighbors had joined Beals’ grassroots production chain, making a staggering 3,000 cloth masks by the first week in April. By then, the group had given itself a name, “Neighbor-to-Neighbor;” and this week, there’s a new batch of 800 masks in different stages of the production line, and no plans to slow down.

Beals has a hefty background in mass production. She’s the founder of Teetot & Company, Inc. a family-run Halloween costume company that supplies to Costco and other big box stores. She taught mask production in China for 20 years. Now, working with a group of home sewers—many from Carpinteria Community Church’s Crafty Ladies—she’s turned that expertise towards a formidable goal: getting a mask on every adult in Carpinteria.

The group’s first target was to cover the homeless population; once accomplished, they swiftly started distributing their brightly colored 100 percent cotton masks to Albertsons and Smart & Final employees; branching out over the days to other retail shops, restaurants and health care agencies. Soon they were fielding calls from all over Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. “I knew in my heart that this was coming,” said Beals. “We are pumping these out just as fast as we can.”

On the neighborhood production line, Beals has assigned volunteers to specific details. Some wash, dry and iron, others cut fabric, a handful cut wire or elastic, and there are many sewers. Distribution also has a team, headed by Lynn Menicucci. All sections are done in sets of 20; volunteers pick up their packs from Louise Moore. This division of labor and clear organization has contributed to the group’s ability to produce at high volumes. But Beals is ready to do more.

“These sewers are really generous with their time and their hearts,” said Beals.

“But we need more sewers and more people to cut wire and elastic, and more people to help distribute.”

So far, Beals has footed the $7-10,000 needed for fabric and supplies. “This is

“We’re trying to flatten the curve in Carpinteria,” said Beals. “This is where we know people and have people we care for. Carpinteria is a very small community.

We’re trying to take care of each other.”

The group is also helping provide face masks to Santa Barbara and Ventura agencies. “We’ll help anyone we can help.”

Finding good in the ’hood: neighbors helping neighbors By kern Ducote The current situation with “He who must not be named,” aka Covid-19, has created some real head-scratchers, leaving us questioning “the right thing” to do.

Yeah, we’re all quarantine-ing and socialdistancing, but the grey area has never felt broader. The feeling of uncertainty is everywhere.

All of the sudden it seems as if I have forgotten how to be decisive. “Do you wanna go for a walk?” my wife asks. I think about the question as if the fate of the world depends on it. What could happen on our eight-minute walk to the beach in our new neighborhood? She patiently watches as the blank thousandmile stare comes over my face. “We’re just going to the beach,” she says, snapping me out of my trance. We leave the safety of our home and step into the world full of unclear boundaries.

The simple movement, fresh air and a normal sunset worked like an invisible masseuse on the body, mind and soul.

Dusk was coming on and we were nearly back to our house when we walked past a neighbor we hadn’t met before with her garage door open. As we peered into her world, her tiny dogs reminded us we were encroaching on their territory and the shelter-in-place quarantine. We waved and kept walking, but then it registered to me what she was doing, and I paused.

She had hardly noticed us, concentrated at a sewing machine. I have to talk to her I thought. “Hi there. What are you working on?” I asked. “Masks,” she replied.

I had just been thinking about the very thing. It was popping up in the news everywhere that medical professionals and first responders were running out of simple personal protective equipment, like face masks. “But I’m out of machine oil,” she continued. “I’ll get some for you!” I blurted out. She stopped and looked at me. “You have machine oil?” she said. My slightly unkempt and grizzly appearance may have caused some consternation. We spent the next few

minutes going through the formalities of introducing ourselves, and I explained why I could grab her some machine oil.

“I work with Worn Wear. It’s a program that Patagonia started a few years back. We drive all over the country and fix people’s clothing on the spot. We use

So far, her group, Neighbor to Neighbor, has made 3,000 masks.

Pat has a short expandable fence set up as a barrier—keeping her dogs, Tink and Rosie, in and the rest of us out. She lays things on the table close by or drapes them over the fence, passing materials to her crew of neighbors while remaining a responsible distance away. Throughout the day, I watch several neighbors walk across the street and either pick up or drop off their portions of the pattern for the masks. pening. In meeting Pat, I discovered the inspiration I needed. Here was this lovely lady who had every right to be hunkered down, afraid or uncertain, but instead she recognized that her talents could fulfill a community need and bravely decided to meet that need with all her energy. She was certain in a time of uncertainty. Her courage pulled me out of over-thinking and into action.

There are “Pats” leading the way and championing community in neighborhoods around the world. We can all do away with uncertainty and do what we can to contribute to the good going on all around us.
