This week, the city of Carpinteria rolled out further restrictions on outdoor spaces to discourage high intensity use that challenges the social distancing mandate. Beach volleyball nets and other play equipment have been removed and playgrounds, BBQ areas, the Community Pool and public parking lots at Viola Fields and Bailard Avenue have been closed. While some Southern California communities—including Ventura County—have closed their beaches and parks, for now, in Carpinteria, beaches, public trails and parks remain open for “socially distanced” use.

County agencies have called on the community to donate personal protective equipment for essential workers.

County seeks protective equipment donations

In collaboration with the Foodbank of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County has established a countywide process for the donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) from the community. In particular, county agencies need N95 masks (NIOSH-approved), surgical and procedure masks (FDA-approved), exam gloves (powder free, nitrile or latex preferred), isolation gowns/coveralls, hospital grade cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer, eye protection, face shields, goggles, safety glasses, thermometers and disposable non-contact/temporal scanners. Donations must be in sealed, original packaging with no stains, odors or tears.

The county has set up several locations where community members can donate drop off donations. In Carpinteria, PPE donations can be dropped off weekdays at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

POSTPONED The City of Carpinteria has decided to postpone its Annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day out of an abundance of caution related to the spread of coronavirus.

Household goods and waste will NOT be accepted at City Hall on April 11 and will be rescheduled to a new undetermined date.

Economic recovery website launched by county

Santa Barbara County has created a new online resource dedicated to COVID-19 economic recovery, readysbc.org/ economicrecovery.

The new resource page includes information from the county’s Workforce Development Board on federal, state and local assistance programs that are available to small business owners, employers, employees and residents. The county plans to update the site regularly with emerging information and resources that can help businesses and individuals recover financially from adverse economic impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus scams proliferate

Scams related to the coronavirus are rapidly increasing as the public health emergency continues, according to Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley. The FBI has identified four prevalent scams: selling phony products that don’t exist or don’t work; overcharging for goods in high demand, such as face masks or hand sanitizers; emails supposedly from WHO or the CDC requesting personal information; and bogus charities seeking donations.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of an internet scam or a cybercrime, or want to report suspicious activity, should fill out a report on the FBI’s website at ic3.gov.

School lunch service will continue weekdays Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. Families should drive through the parking lot and the carry out lunches will be brought to the car on a tray. Cafeteria staff are taking safety precautions. If arriving by foot, families should take their own lunch sack to minimize contact.

Carpinteria schools resume instruction

Carpinteria Unified School District resumed instruction this week with students of all grades participating remotely. Laptops are being distributed throughout the week. Families should contact their school with questions about the distribution schedule. When picking up materials, parents are advised to bring their own pen to sign the check-out form, eliminating the need to touch things that others have touched.

Chromebooks will be returned to school once the quarantine is over.

Students without home access to the internet will be issued an internet hotspot, however, these may not be available for another two weeks. “As you can imagine,” said Canalino Principal Jamie Persoon, “hotspots are being ordered by virtually every school district, so we are ‘in line.’”

Kindergarten registration is open

Kindergarten registration for Aliso, Canalino and Summerland schools resumed on Monday, March 30, by phone. Families should register at their attendance area school.

Families interested in Dual Language Immersion or Carpinteria Family School, should register at their home school and indicate their interest in one or both programs. The lottery for the Dual Language Immersion program and Carpinteria Family School has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 15. Registration for families who wish to participate in the lottery must be completed by Friday, April 10. The lottery will be conducted by district office staff, and parents will be notified of the results.

HELP of Carpinteria suspends services, Easy Lift to provide rides

Stating concern for the health of their many senior volunteers, HELP of Carpinteria has suspended transportation services during the coronavirus crisis. HELP is a nonprofit grassroots organization that has had an army of senior volunteers powering its low-cost transportation services for over 32 years.

Individuals who rely on HELP for rides to medical appointments or for grocery shopping, can utilize the services of Easy Lift of Santa Barbara. Easy Lift has agreed to temporarily provide services to HELP riders while HELP’s services are suspended.

HELP riders can call the regular HELP line at (805) 684-0065 to be directed to Easy Lift, or riders can reach Easy Lift directly at (805) 681-1181. When scheduling a ride, HELP riders should tell the Easy Lift dispatcher that they are a HELP rider.

In response to the recent statewide shelter-in-place order issued by the governor of California, the U.S. Pacific Southwest Region of the USDA Forest Service, has closed all developed recreation facilities on National Forests statewide.

“Developed recreation sites” refers to designated recreation-use areas designed to facilitate public use. Closures of developed recreation facilities will remain in place until at least April 30 in an attempt to avoid groups of people and to promote social distancing of staying more than six feet apart.

While designated recreation sites will be closed, the general forest area including the extensive trail system will remain open and available to the public. Hiking and walking outdoors are widely considered beneficial to maintaining one’s health. It is the intent of the Forest Service to maintain trail access to the extent practicable.

County confirms 99 cases of COVID-19 The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department confirmed 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, March 31, bringing the county’s total confirmed cases to 99.

Of the 99 cases, 57 are recovering at home, 22 have fully recovered, and seven are pending an update. Thirteen patients are hospitalized; and of these 11 are in the Intensive Care Unit.

Six of the confirmed cases are residents of the South County communities of Montecito, Toro Canyon, Summerland and Carpinteria. The cities of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria have the highest counts at present, 22 and 25, respectively.

While PHD has not specified in which of the three communities the six novel coronavirus patients live, at least one is a resident of Carpinteria, according to a recent Facebook testimonial from Maria Chesley, executive director of the Carpin-

teria Children’s Project.

“I have just gotten off the phone with a beloved member of the Carpinteria community who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is suffering,” said Chesley.

“We want to urge all Carpinterians to understand the seriousness of the virus and that people among us are carrying the disease and unaware that they are.

Please follow every safety precaution, every time—stay home if at all possible, maintain six feet of distance between yourself and others, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands well frequently.” On the patient’s request for privacy, Chesley did not share their name.

The county has tested 799 people.

One test was inconclusive; 99 tests are pending; and 600 have been negative.

Superintendent says no employee notified district of COVID-19 infection

Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) Superintendent Diana Rigby stated Tuesday, March 31, that no CUSD employee or student had informed the district that they have COVID-19 or that they have been tested for COVID-19.

Rigby’s statement followed an email sent to district employees from Jay Hotchner, president of the district’s labor union, Carpinteria Association of Unified School Employees, warning of possible exposure to COVID-19 from a CUSD employee. In his email, Hotchner stated that a district employee is symptomatic with COVID-19 and has been directed to quarantine by their physician.

Up until yesterday, this employee was working onsite with other employees and in contact with families, indicated the email. Hotchner further stated that, “Although district leaders … have been advised of these conditions, the union is unaware of any notification provided by a district agent,” which goes against district policy to inform employees when notified of a confirmed or likely COVID-19 employee or student infection.

In response to Hotchner ’s email, Maureen Fitzgerald, CUSD assistant superintendent, quickly issued a statement to all staff that “we have not been notified that an employee or student has been confirmed or likely to have COVID-19 infection at this time.” The dis-

The superintendent stated that up to this point, they are not aware of any confirmed or likely cases, “right now, in this moment.” If and when there is, the district stated that they will inform employees.

We’re proving what we’re capable of. What’s next?

the lay of the land mike wondolowski My workday while sheltering-at-home mostly involves sitting at my desk working on the computer. My big midday adventure is going outside to get the mail.

As the day winds down, I look forward to getting outside for some exercise—maybe a walk around the block or a run that takes me along the beach.

As I see everyone maintain appropriate social distancing, what is remarkable to me is that we all are following these new rules without anybody forcing us to do so.

There are no “Quarantine Cops” running around with six-foot measuring tapes or questioning each person to determine if they are out of their home for an acceptable reason. We understand the purpose of the rules is to reduce disease transmission, and we are each very invested in achieving that goal, both for ourselves and for those around us. So, we follow the rules, and we try to get those around us to do the same, mostly by simply demonstrating good behavior.

This got me thinking about the much bigger topic of how we run our community, in fact our entire society. Our society is not run by government. We run our society with an interconnected web of different levels of government, companies, small businesses, non-profits and individuals.

Our daily lives have fundamentally changed over the past few weeks. Why? Did the government directly tell us to do that? Think carefully before you answer that.

We know that Governor Newsom ordered most California businesses to close and residents to shelter-at-home. How do you know that? TV? Radio? Newspaper?

Email or a website? Not a single one of those is owned or operated by any government. To view even the state of California’s website (www.ca.gov) requires you to use an internet service provider, a private company.

Many of the things that are most critical to us right now are not directly provided by the government—food, electricity, internet, medical care including hospitals, and don’t forget streaming movie services!

Then there are non-profits and local volunteers such as Bucket Brigade, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Freedom Warming Centers, and many others who reach out beyond themselves to help others in the community.

Yes, there are numerous critical services including water, sewer and roads provided to us in Carpinteria directly by some level of government. But even then, consider that a worker at the Carpinteria Valley Water District or the city’s Department of Public Works might be a neighbor.

Clearly, various levels of government have huge roles in controlling how all the pieces work together, and some of their biggest tools are laws, regulations and dollars. There must be some top-level coordination or else nothing would work.

In our current COVID-19 crisis, national and state policies and actions were critical to starting our local actions in Carpinteria to respond to the situation even before we saw illnesses locally.

When I witness members in my community suddenly changing their everyday behaviors because of their shared goal of reducing the spread of COVID-19, what I see is proof that a shared vision and shared purpose can move mountains.

It is the shared purpose over many decades to preserve Carpinteria’s small beach town character that gives us the community we have today. This is no minor accomplishment for a coastal Southern California town.

But what I see in our collective response to the current crisis is our potential to achieve wildly more than I ever dreamed we could. Once we get through our current situation and get back on our feet, I firmly believe we will be ready to accomplish whatever we choose to.

What about ending homelessness in Carpinteria? Or food insecurity for local families? Maybe vehicle vs. bike or pedestrian collisions? Or just cars rolling through stop signs? How about drugrelated crime? (Wouldn’t it be nice to have a nearly empty Commander’s Recap in this paper?)

Based on what I have witnessed recently, I am convinced that this community could pick anything from that list, or even some grander goal, and with enough focus and determination could achieve it.

Accomplishing difficult things can take work and sacrifice, much like reducing the spread of COVID-19 requires social distancing. But the outcome is worth the hassle.

What should we tackle next?

In his 30 years of involvement in planning issues, he has witnessed visionary successes, as well as decisions that were later widely regretted.

There was no fanfare, no publicity and no public comment with its purchase. City leaders acted in our best interest.

Unlike the various bluffs open space parcels, there was never a celebratory announcement of the close of this escrow.

No one was asked for an opinion, nor to contribute funds for the purchase. Yet indeed we the people of Carpinteria own this beautiful and rare open land. And we paid $767,000 to acquire it.

This uncelebrated long and narrow Open Space Corridor in the midst of an urban setting is rare and exceptional. It gives us the gift of unobstructed majestic mountain views. It enables ocean breezes to flow into town. And it enables our native urban wildlife to live upon and safely transit the area. Its California poppies are in bloom and Great Blue Herons are stalking gophers. This rare urban corridor forms an essential part of the heartbeat of our most valuable asset: Carpinteria’s small beach town charm.

To quote Ted Rhodes, president of Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs: “Time and time again, Carpinterians demonstrate how much they value open space, and this beautiful natural environment we live in.”

Mobile home residents at risk

The state may soon find new hot spots for coronavirus in mobile homes or manufactured home parks. Construction has or is occurring during this period of time when the goal is to flatten the curve.

Older citizens like myself live in many of these parks.

Construction has been going on this week and different workers have been there. They are not required to stay six feet apart and wouldn’t be able to work if required to do so. They do not wear masks and they use my property to complete the work. All these behaviors would be normal if we didn’t have the pandemic. The executive order N-33-20 includes construction workers under “essential workforce.” I have been told by the county health department and our

I truly do not understand why some people are not taking this COVID-19 outbreak seriously. People are dying.

Sadly, until there are real consequences for violating the stay-at-home order, such as hefty fines, people will continue to gather, putting the rest of us at risk.

Maybe folks will understand how serious it is when their own loved one needs a ventilator and can’t get one. Please, stay home!

Today I asked a Santa Barbara County Public Health official: What are the top three measures we should take to slow the spread of COVID-19. The response was: 1.

Stay at home; 2. Wash your hands; 3. Stay at home. This is the consensus among doctors, nurses and those fighting on the frontline of this pandemic. Stay at home and wash your hands.

Pantheon Macroeconomics, a U.S. economic-research consultancy, has said the number of deaths is doubling roughly every two and a half days and by the end of next week, could reach 1,000 a day.

As of Thursday, March 26, about 250 people were dying a day. Numerous studies show why lockdowns can halt the spread of COVID-19.”Without any lockdown or social distancing measures, we can expect peak mortality in approximately three months. In this scenario, 81 percent of the U.K. and U.S. populations would be infected, with 510,000 dying in the UK and 2.2 million dying in the US.” California surges past 4,000 cases of COVID-19, 1,400 in the Bay Area. As of March 27, for the second consecutive day, the state crossed a thousandcase marker; 83 people have now died.

Let’s start enforcing stricter measures before it’s too late. Let’s make California an example of how quarantine and lockdown measures can slow the growing numbers of people infected and/or dying.

Support the 93013 Fund All contributions assist the community response to COVID-19

Life as we knew it three weeks ago is distant and unfamiliar. The depth of community spirit in this valley is no secret. Whether we face an oil spill, fires, floods or now a pandemic, we have each other’s backs.

Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset Charitable Foundation sought to harness this unity when creating “93013 Fund,” a central place for local individuals and businesses to build resources for quick distribution to assist in the response to COVID-19. We encourage neighbors to step up, join the cause and maximize the reach of local community services to the broadest number of local families.

At 93013fund.org, anyone can make a contribution, whether it’s $10 or $10,000.

There are numerous reputable organizations who need funding right now, and we are not here to discourage continued contributions to other important nonprofits. 93013 Fund guarantees that a dollar contributed by a Carpinterian will be a dollar spent toward services in the 93013. Thus far, the message has worked, and we have raised nearly $70,000. We are impressed but sustaining efforts for months of job and wage losses and economic interruptions will cost much more.

We are fortunate to have a wealth of local services and experts delivering those services. At 93013fund.org, local organizations fill out a form to apply for funds online. We fund the organizations who are delivering services to their clients.

We’ve identified food and housing insecurity as the top priorities and targets of funding. What is elegant and efficient about 93013 Fund is that we rely on the guidance of the local nonprofits, which already serve on the front lines delivering services, to determine how this fund can achieve the greatest good for the greatest number in our community.

When will funds be distributed?

When the Advisory Committee identifies a need, Sunset Rotary Charitable Foundation can act immediately to distribute funds. This week, we are piloting a “Weekend Food Box” to be distributed through a nonprofit partner. It will include fresh produce from The Farm Cart, as well as staples like rice, beans and bread sourced from Reynaldo’s Bakery.

Our nonprofit partner will design how the food is distributed and to whom.

As programs continue to develop out of this fund, it’s a high priority to fold in local businesses in order for the funds to have many touch points within the community. Really, the key is building partnerships and collaborating, so we come out of this emergency stronger together.

It became clear last week that a community response was imperative. In conversation with the many dedicated nonprofit leaders, the common theme was that the COVID-19 outbreak is unprecedented, unpredictable and will hurt almost everyone in some way.

We live and work in this community, so we are also your neighbors, friends and the local doctors who may diagnose your child’s ear infection at 3 a.m. or fix your broken wrist.

These are trying times and nowhere is the anxiety and stress felt more than in the emergency room. We are the frontlines of this fight. Every day we are seeing increasing numbers of sick patients with COVID-19. Some are walking and talking and go home safely to recover. Others are very ill and need to be admitted to the hospital for care, some in the intensive care unit. Every day we are seeing more and more of these cases.

We are inundated with news, updates, emails and social media posts regarding the virus. People are talking about the availability of tests, debating about how serious our situation will get. The reality is that COVID-19 is here. The virus is spreading. And the situation will likely get worse before it gets better.

This is not a political issue, not a liberal or conservative issue. This is a human issue. Regardless of your income or immigration status, every one of us is affected by this pandemic.

For the sake of our community, we implore each of you to do your part to heed the warnings of our public health physicians. Stay home, wash your hands often, sanitize the surfaces you touch, and practice social distancing. It is up to each and every one of us to do our part to limit the spread of COVID-19. If you are young, healthy and fearless, don’t do it for you, do it for your mother or father or grandparent. They are the ones who will suffer and potentially die as the virus spreads.

Foodbank launches SAFE Food Net, increases emergency food distribution

As the COVID-19 crisis unfolds and food insecurity becomes a growing and widespread problem, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is working hard to provide enough healthy food to everyone who needs it through their new countywide initiative, Safe Access to Food for Everyone (SAFE) Food Net. All Foodbank distributions and volunteer services fall into the sanctioned category of “essential services” and community members may participate with the full support of the state of California, the Santa Barbara County Emergency Operations Center, and the county’s Public Health and Sheriff’s departments.

Hand washing, sanitizer, disposable gloves and social distancing are employed in all Foodbank interactions. “We established the SAFE Food Net to emphasize to the community that all Foodbank operations are conducted under impeccable safety protocols, with strict adherence to CDC and county Public Health recommendations,” said Erik Talkin, Foodbank’s CEO. “The health, and most immediately, the safety of community members receiving food, our volunteers and partners, our drivers and our staff, is our utmost priority. The community can be confident in the safety and accessibility of all Foodbank operations.”

Drive-through food pick-up

Of the 50 SAFE Food Net distributions, nearly 20 are brand new emergency drive-through food distribution points, making receiving healthy food fast, easy, discreet and safe. The process has only two steps. At the first stop, visiting community members answer three brief questions: name, number in household and whether this is the first time they’re receiving food this month. At the second stop, volunteers load food bags into the back of the vehicle and recipients drive away with healthy groceries and fresh produce without getting out of their car or making contact with volunteers.

Home delivery for seniors

Each year the Foodbank serves 20,000 low-income seniors across the county.

All of those enrolled in the Foodbank’s Brown Bag programs will receive food delivered to their homes.

Route4Me has provided the platform for the Foodbank to establish routes for the rapidly growing home delivery initiative being undertaken.

“I was giving an interview for KTAS Telemundo in Santa Maria today where we normally serve 75 families and they couldn’t even get any action shots of the distribution because it ended in 15 minutes,” said Genesis Gutierrez, Foodbank community programs supervisor.

“Starting Wednesday, we’ll be serving 200 families three times a week there, reaching 600 families in one week.”

Late last week, the Disaster Feeding Plan Task Force convened for the first time. Member organizations reported the response they’ve seen to food distribution. Carpinteria Children’s Project usually provides food at a distribution to 120 families, but last Wednesday, they served 280 families. Salvation Army reports seeing more families in one day at its Hollister Avenue location than they usually see in a month.

Community Action Commission, serving lunch at 13 sites, reported that while they normally serve 150 people a day, they saw 260 people per day last week.

Santa Barbara Unified School District served 3,600 lunches in its first four days of operation since schools closed.

Other participants in the Feeding Plan Task Force activation include city of Carpinteria, county of Santa Barbara Office of Emergency Management/Emergency Operations Center and Public Health Department, Red Cross, Southern Baptist Church, city of Santa Maria Fire Department and Community Long-Term Recovery Group.

Additional warehouses

The Foodbank has signed lease agreements for additional warehouse space in both Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, doubling storage space and expanding volunteer service space to ensure greater numbers of volunteers can maintain social distancing at their shifts to enable the Foodbank to keep up with demand for pre-packed bags of food.

Last week, to meet growing need, the Foodbank purchased $100,000 in food that is difficult to source by donation.

Nonperishable staples cost $70,000. Additional produce needed cost $22,000; $7,000 was spent on eggs; and $2,000 went to purchasing tortillas/bread.

USDA and TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) emergency food is on its way and the new facilities allow for the Foodbank to process and store more community donations as well.

Individuals may drop off home-grown produce or non-perishable foods at either of the Foodbank’s regular warehouses.

National Guard

The National Guard has been deployed for an initial two weeks to aid in food distribution in Santa Barbara County. They are currently working with the Foodbank: helping at warehouses, running deliveries, helping at food distributions, among other essential needs. “Already a terrific help and source of support and humanpower for our greatly expanded demands, warehouse spaces, and distribution sites,” said Judith Smith-Meyer, Foodbank’s marketing communications manager.

Rincon Bluffs Preserve: The newest city park On March 27, the city of Carpinteria, Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs and members of the Bluffs Advisory Board celebrated the transfer of the Rincon Bluffs Preserve to the city and the permanent dedication of a conservation easement over the property.

With the transfer of these 21 acres, more than 73 acres of the Carpinteria Bluffs are forever protected from development and are preserved for the public’s enjoyment. Working collaboratively, the Land Trust, the city, and the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs will now begin planning and permitting the trails and improvements for the property in earnest.

“Now more than ever before, we recognize the value that the Rincon Bluffs Preserve brings to the Carpinteria community. The foresight and tenacity of local supporters in combination with other conservation minded friends, have created an amazing property to be enjoyed by all. In these times of social distancing and isolation, the importance of having a preserve that is easily accessible to the community, providing spectacular views and passive recreational activities has never been greater,” said Scott Van Der Kar, president of the Land Trust Board of Trustees.

In early 2016, the Land Trust took advantage of a very narrow window of opportunity to secure a contract to purchase this prized coastal open space that had been threatened by development for more than a decade. In just a little more than one year, a fundraising collaboration including the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs, the city, and the Land Trust successfully raised the $6 million needed to complete the purchase, as well as additional funds to initiate restoration and to ensure the long-term maintenance of the Rincon Bluffs property.

The South Coast community has long supported acquiring this property, which will partly fulfill the community’s longstanding desire to protect all of the Carpinteria Bluffs. More than 1,300 individuals contributed to the campaign to save the bluffs. “We are grateful for being able to repeat our partnership with the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and the city of Carpinteria in another successful

Carpool lane construction begins on Hwy 101 CoastalView.com The Highway 101: Carpinteria project will begin construction on the night of Sunday, April 5. This is the first segment of the Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project that will add peak-period, carpool lanes between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. In addition to new freeway lanes, the project includes new bridges over Santa Monica and Franklin Creeks, updated on- and off-ramps, and local intersection improvements.

“This project is a significant step in addressing freeway traffic congestion that has increased over the last 30 years,” said Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) Executive Director Marjie Kirn.

Kirn noted that the project received significant funding from the California Transportation Commission (CTC) and the local transportation sales tax, Measure A, which has enabled SBCAG to leverage significant funds from Senate Bill 1 (SB1).

The funds will be used to complete seven of the 10 miles of the project while also implementing other components of the ‘lane and train’ solution.

“There is a lot of work that has to occur across a number of government agencies to bring these projects to fruition,” said Kirn, “and our team is looking forward

Construction of public works projects is an essential government service even during current health measures. Road crews are working to ensure that these needed improvements are built while accommodating safe working conditions.

Residents should expect to start to see initial safety fencing, safety barriers to shift lanes, and work to build up outside shoulders next week. Then lanes will be shifted and the first year of work will focus on the southbound side of U.S. 101.

“Over the last four years of construction, we have seen a lot of roadwork around Casitas Pass Road, Linden Avenue and the extension of Via Real. The new bridges over Carpinteria Creek have already reduced the impacts of large floods, and the sound walls are helping reduce freeway noise in our neighborhoods,” said Carpinteria City Manager Dave Durflinger. “We are looking forward to having three freeway lanes in each direction throughout Carpinteria and welcome the start of Highway 101: Carpinteria.”

The project is a partnership between Caltrans, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments and the city of Carpinteria with state funding approved by the California Transportation Commission.

The new phase of construction comes on the heels of the Highway 101: Linden and Casitas Pass which is expected to complete by summer the construction of new local road connections, bridges, bike lanes and sidewalks on the local streets in Carpinteria. The widening of the new

Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road Overcrossings will allow carpool lanes to be built on U.S. 101 below these bridges, according to California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

Highway 101: Carpinteria will add a carpool lane in each direction and key improvements in an area that has not been updated since the freeway was originally built in the 1950s.

Sheriff’s contract employee tests positive for COVID-19 Another Santa Barbara County Jail contract employee tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office on March 27.

The individual, an employee of WellPath, was assigned to the jail through the Sheriff’s Office contract for inmate medical services.

On Saturday, March 21, the employee, who is a resident of Ventura County, began experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19. The patient was tested for the virus and began self-isolation at home. While at work at the jail, one day before experiencing symptoms, the individual interacted with some inmates and staff; however, during that time, they consistently wore personal protective equipment (PPE), including goggles, an N95 mask and a gown. The potential risk to others in the facility was evaluated and no additional staff or inmates were found to be symptomatic or to need a self-isolation protocol. The Sheriff’s Office was notified on Thursday, March 26, that the test had returned positive.

This is the second COVID-19 related incident at the Jail, with the first incident resulting in one civilian employee testing positive and 12 staff being isolated. The employee in the first case has recovered

after experiencing mild symptoms and has since returned to work after being cleared by Public Health Officials. None of the self-isolated employees developed symptoms, and all of them were cleared to return to work. No inmates have tested positive nor are any in isolation related to COVID-19, at this time.

The jail is continuing the stringent precautionary measures set in place at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the suspension of in-person visitations, increased frequency of cleaning of housing and common areas, screening of inmates prior to intake and providing COVID-19 related education about cleanliness for both inmates and staff. Cleaning supplies, soap and PPE are readily available and sufficiently back stocked. Everyone who enters the jail must have their temperature checked prior to entry; and anyone with a reading of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will not be allowed to enter.

“We are continuing to work closely with our WellPath and Public Health Department partners in implementing federal, state and local guidance to fight the spread of COVID-19 in our facility and in our community,” stated the Sheriff’s Office.

Before entering the jail, visitors must have their temperature read.

Anyone with a reading of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will not be allowed to enter.

Reining in cannabis tax scofflaws

County will use state’s “track-and-trace” inventory for 60 days

By MeLindA Burns Some cannabis operators in Santa Barbara County still don’t pay taxes, but there are signs that the county is closing in on them.

Of 106 licensed cannabis growers and processors in county unincorporated areas, 15 failed to report their gross revenues during the most recent quarter, from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, according to a recent update for the county Board of Supervisors. That’s down from 22 tax scofflaws in the previous quarter.

The county has put growers on notice that it will withdraw its “letter of authorization” for cannabis state business licenses if they fail to pay county taxes, said Assistant County Executive Officer Barney Melekian.

“The word went out that we were paying attention to that,” he said, adding that one grower was forced to surrender his state license and shut down last month; two others promptly paid up, and a fourth has been summoned to a county administrative hearing.

With 1,164 active state licenses for cannabis, Santa Barbara County is second in California only to Humboldt County in its embrace of the lucrative crop. The rapid influx of industrial-scale “grows” into the scenic Santa Ynez and Carpinteria valleys in recent years has produced an outcry for better enforcement and stricter regulations.

On Tuesday, the board authorized Melekian’s office to draw up a memorandum of understanding with the state Department of Food and Agriculture for use of its “Track-and-Trace” database for 60 days. As part of this pilot program, the county will investigate 250 state cannabis licenses in unincorporated areas, beginning later this year.

The state tracks the bar codes that are embedded in cannabis plants and products, following the crop throughout the commercial supply chain. Access to this database, Melekian said, will allow an auditing firm contracted by the county to check whether a grower’s self-reported tax revenues line up with the number of his plants. A mismatch, he said, could indicate that the grower is selling on the black market in California or diverting

Monterey and Yolo counties also will participate in the pilot program. In the future, the state is expected to expand local access to track-and-trace data throughout California.

Tax rates for cannabis in Santa Barbara County are as follows: 1 percent of gross revenues for nurseries and distributors, 3 percent for manufacturers, 4 percent for growers and 6 percent for retailers and microbusinesses.

Melekian reports that from July 1 to Dec. 31—the first six months of the current fiscal year—Santa Barbara County collected $4.8 million in tax revenues from cannabis. That’s a 50 percent increase over the first six months of fiscal year 2018-2019, when the county collected only $3.2 million.

“People are doing a more accurate job of reporting, and there is more growth and more sales,” Melekian said. “The first two quarters of fiscal year 2018-2019, everybody was just getting their feet under them. County tax collection is more efficient now.”

Forty-eight cannabis operators reported zero gross receipts and paid no taxes during the most recent quarter,

from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2019—but that’s likely because outdoor grows were dormant and some nurseries had no sales, Melekian said. Here, too, he said, the state track-and-trace data will help the county determine whether growers are telling the truth.

Meanwhile, raids on illegal cannabis operations slowed dramatically from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, partly because of the scope and complexity of ongoing investigations, Melekian said. The county Sheriff’s Department confiscated and destroyed only 100 marijuana plants and 74 pounds of dried marijuana during that time, representing a total value of $79,000. In the previous quarter, the department confis-

cated 17,000 plants and 1,200 pounds of dried marijuana, a $5 million value in all.

During fiscal year 2018-2019, county records show, the department confiscated 985,000 plants and 65,000 pounds of dried marijuana valued at $288 million during searches at illegal operations. By comparison, licensed growers reported only $169 million in gross revenues to the county that year.

Every cannabis grower must obtain state and county business licenses; every landowner must obtain a county zoning permit. To date, records show, the county has issued permits for cultivation on 221 acres in inland areas and 22 acres. last year, responding to a barrage of citizen complaints about the pungent skunk-like smell from cannabis, the county set caps of 1,575 acres and 186 acres of cultivation in inland and coastal areas, respectively.

Most of the cannabis farms in the county are designated as “legal, nonconforming.” That is, the landowners claimed to have been cultivating cannabis for medicinal purposes before Jan. 19, 2016. Beginning on that date, the county allowed cannabis cultivation to continue on those properties under temporary state licenses, but the landowners were required to apply for county zoning permits.

Keep calm and stay fiscal More options exist today than ever before to help you stay in your home

By AustIn LAmpsOn Uncertainty seems to waft through the air like the smell of campfires in summer.

We are in unprecedented times, and while hindsight will ultimately reign supreme in 2020, each day seems to blend more awkwardly into the next. Right now, as we embark on the unknown, many homeowners are asking, ‘Are we headed for another housing crisis?’ There are many differences between what is happening now though and what happened just over a decade ago in 2007/08.

I have been in lending for over two decades. The way our industry functions today is very, very different than when I started. It’s much, much more compliant and diligent in vetting transactions than it was when I started. In my career, I’ve seen many challenges and changing economic climates. During the Great Recession of the early 2000s, I ran an operations team for a “Big Bank” and I have been in the top 1 percent of mortgage originators since the second year that I started originating loans (Scotsman Guide). So, while I know that the situation before us is drastically different than anything we have seen before, it still seems to be evoking fearsome flashbacks from the past.

These loans had adjustable rates, almost unpredictable payments, and greatly destabilized the ability of homeowners to feel financially secure.

The Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 changed the way mortgages were put together.

Document, document, document—lenders are required now to demonstrate the homeowner’s ability to repay the debt they seek.

So why does that matter to us here in Carpinteria? Very simply, the mortgages that we have today are not those of days past.

The difference between now and then is that the economic events causing insecurity are external versus internal.

It is not the types of loans that we have that might cause hardships; but rather it’s the external, global economic events that may impact our ability to repay our mortgages.

The good news is that more options exist today than ever before to help you stay in your home. The California Homeowner Bill of Rights, passed in 2013, provides transparency in the foreclosure process. Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac have set up guidelines for servicers to assist with forbearance as needed during the coronavirus pandemic. Indices for adjustable rate loans are lower than they’ve been in years.

Yes, it is true that there are less new loan options today than what existed a few weeks ago. Demand for mortgages with alternative documentation, lower credit scores or higher amounts in relation to property value, has been reduced. Demand and supply always fluctuate. That is normal, and more changes will come.

We are not through this, but it will turn.

Our lives will shift and shift again: this too shall pass.

For now, the greatest thing we can do is to follow the guidance of our leadership, our health care providers and the CDC. We must plan our budgets accordingly.

We must take steps to be healthy in all aspects of our lives. We must work together, work it through, and work it out.

Make smart decisions and show love. I am grateful to be a part of our community and our town. Stay calm, stay focused and stay fiscal, my friends.

Americans will receive a cash payment as part of the federal government’s COVID-19 stimulus plan.

How to make sure you get the COVID-19 stimulus payment

On March 30, the U.S. Congress signed into legislation a direct payment for every resident in the U.S. who has a social security number. To help individuals understand the payments and how to receive one, California Senator Dianne Feinstein and the Democratic Committee staff released the following list of frequently asked questions.

“Getting cash into the hands of American families will help them through this difficult time and help stabilize the economy,” said Feinstein. “The legislation passed by Congress includes direct payments—up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child—to help them get by during this pandemic.”

Who qualifies to receive a check and how much will an individual receive?

Anyone who filed a return for tax year 2018 or 2019 qualifies and does not need to do anything to receive the funds. They will automatically receive the appropriate amount based on the income in their latest tax return. Social Security recipients will also be automatically enrolled if they received benefits either year.

However, individuals who didn’t file a return for 2018 or 2019 tax years should file a return for the 2019 tax year now.

Individuals receive up to $1,200; married couples receive up to $2,400; and child dependents (under 17) receive $500.

What are qualified income levels based on?

There is no qualified income threshold or requirement to receive the rebate.

However, the rebate phases out at a 5 percent rate above adjusted gross incomes of $75,000 for single filers; $112,500 for heads of household; and $150,000 for joint filers.

Can those collecting Social Security or disability receive a check?

Yes, if they filed a tax return this year or last year, or received a form SSA-1099.

Otherwise, they need to file a tax return.

How does an individual claim their check?

They do not need to claim their checks (unless they have not filed a tax return this year or last year). The IRS will send rebates automatically to the direct deposit account or to the address provided on the last tax return submitted.

How long will it take for this check to be delivered?

Rebates sent via direct deposit will take a few weeks. Rebates sent via checks may take a few months.

Will I be taxed on this check?

No, rebates are not taxable.

Will I be eligible if I haven’t finished filing my 2018 taxes?

You need to have filed either a 2018 tax return or a 2019 tax return. If you have not filed either, you will not be eligible. You can file a 2019 tax return now to claim the rebate.

Will I be eligible if I have a lien against me, but I am in non-collect status?

Yes, rebates will not be subject to garnishment, except if back child support is owed.

I withdrew my retirement in 2018, so my income that year was inflated. Is there any waiver for one-time sources of income?

In this case, the taxpayer should file a 2019 tax return.

Carpinteria Arts Center offers virtual activities

The Carpinteria Arts Center is offering a wide variety of virtual experiences during this period of social distancing. The center’s newly launched “Virtual Activities” can be found at carpinteriaartscenter.org and feature over 200 art activities, streaming concerts, and thousands of virtual tours of museum and private collections.

The site will also feature a collaborative art room for community artists to virtually share recent work—visual art, music and poetry— and to take mini art lessons led by arts center instructors.

Additionally, many artists from the annual Artists Studio Tour are streaming virtual tours of their studios and local art collectors are hosting home tours of the art that brings them joy. For a social component, on Monday evenings, the arts center invites the public to a virtual happy hour at 5 p.m.

“Even the virtual arts can bring us together as a community, which is more important than ever right now,” said Paige Van Tuyl, executive director of the Carpinteria Arts Center. “We still need each other.”

Poetry competition opens call for submissions

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Carpinteria Arts Center is holding its annual poetry competition and seeks unpublished, original poems that are no longer than 100 lines on the theme of “Gratitude.”

There will be three age categories: children ages 5-12 with a $50 prize; Award-winning poet Glenna Luschei, left, is with teens ages 13-18 M.L. Brown, 2019 first place winner in the adult poets with a $100 prize; competition. and adults ages 19 and over with a $300 prize. Winning poets will also be invited to share their poems during the poetry celebration that is tentatively scheduled for May 17 at 1:30 p.m.

Abstract Art Collective opens virtual exhibition

The Abstract Art Collective will open their first virtual exhibition, “Open to Abstraction,” on April 2. The show was originally set to exhibit at the Faulkner Gallery with an opening reception during Santa Barbara’s First Thursday. However, the show, which highlights the work of its members, has been made virtual instead this year, adapting to the current social distancing protocol.

The exhibition’s juror is Jeremy Tessmer, gallery director and curator of vintage American art at Sullivan Goss Gallery. Forty-one pieces have been selected and will be on view and available for purchase at abstractartcollective.com.

Recently, we’ve seen an increased interest in mindfulness, although the concept itself is thousands of years old. Essentially, being mindful means you are living very much in the present, highly conscious of your thoughts and feelings.

However, being mindful doesn’t mean acting on those thoughts and feelings it’s just the opposite.

With mindfulness, your decision-making is base on cognitive skills and a rational perspective, rather than emotions. As such, mindfulness can be quite valuable as you make investment decisions.

Two of the most common emotions or tendencies associated with investing are fear and greed. Let’s see how they can affect investors’ behavior.

• When investors are fearful…Investors’ biggest fear is losing money. So, how did many of them respond during the steep market decline from late 2007 through early 2009? They began selling off their stocks and stock-based mutual funds and fled for “safer” investments, such as Treasury bills and certificates of deposit. But mindful investors witnessed the same situation and saw something else: a great buying opportunity.

By looking past the fear of losing money, they recognized the chance to buy quality investments at bargain prices. And they were rewarded for their patience, long-term perspective and refusal to let fear govern their decisions, because 10 years after the market bottomed out in March 2009 (as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average), it had risen about 300 percent.

• When investors are greedy…We only have to go back a few years before the 2007-09 bear market to see a classic example of greed in the

investment world. From 1995 to early 2000, investors chased after almost any company that had “dot com” in its name, even companies with no business plans, no assets and, in some cases, no products. Yet, the rising stock prices of these companies led more and more investors to buy shares in them, causing a freed-driven vicious circle - more demand led to higher prices, which led to more demand. But the bubble burst in March 2000, and by October 2002, the technology-dominated Nasdaq stock index had fallen more than 75%. And since some of these companies not only lost value, but went out of business, many investors never recouped their investments.

To avoid the dangers of fear and greed, take these steps: • Know your investments. Make sure you understand what you’re investing in. Know the fundamentals, such as the quality of the product or service, the skill of the management team, the state of the industry, whether the stock is priced fairly or overvalued, and so on. The better informed you are, the less likely you’ll be to chase after “hot” investments or to bail out on good ones.

• Rebalance when necessary. If you’ve decided your portfolio should contain certain percentages of stocks, bonds and other vehicles, stick to those percentages and rebalance when necessary.

• Keep investing. Ups and downs are a normal feature of the investment landscape.

By continuing to invest over time, rather then stopping and starting, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

It’s not always easy to be a mindful investor and to avoid letting emotions drive your decisions but it’s well worth the effort.

St. Joseph Church delivers blessings by foot

Following state and county guidelines, churches have closed their sanctuaries throughout the region. In Carpinteria, when congregants could no longer come to the church to worship, St. Joseph Church took to the street to bring their blessings to the community.

Local foundation to offset laundry costs

The Pro Deo Foundation, a local nonprofit based in Carpinteria, will be helping community members offset their laundry costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press statement from the foundation released on March 30.

A relatively new organization in town, Pro Deo already has a big footprint, managing the afterschool program at Carpinteria High School and operating the Coastland store on Linden Avenue (which also functions as a catalyst for teen apprenticeships).

“As a foundation, we are committed to the good of Carpinteria. During this crisis, we want to find ways to serve our community,” said Dave Roberts, COO of Pro Deo. “We think that the community of Carpinteria, the school district and the Santa Barbara Foodbank have done a nice

job getting food to kids and families. We thought that perhaps we could find another way to serve the community. After thinking through a few ideas, we have settled on helping those who have to pay to do laundry in our laundry mats.”

Working with the Professional Wash Center on Via Real, and Linden Laundry, Pro Deo is offering laundry mat customers bags of laundry supplies to help offset costs. Each bag contains $5 in quarters, laundry soap and a dryer sheet. Bags are available free of charge to anyone who needs or wants one.

Laundry “help” bags will be available at the Professional Wash Center on Monday and Thursday from 8-10 a.m. and at Linden Laundry on Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 pm, or until supplies last.

Cate School’s Meena Baher was named to the CIF-SS Division Four-A squad for girls basketball.

Cate girls basketball player Meena Baher named All-CIF On March 30, the CiF-Southern Section announced their 2019-20 All-CiF teams for both boys and girls basketball. Cate School sophomore Meena Baher was named to the CiF-SS Division Four-A squad. Baher helped lead the Rams to the quarterfinals of the playoffs after winning the Frontier League with a perfect record of 8-0. Overall, the Rams finished with a 13-3 record and blew through league play by beating their opponents by an average of 32 points. Baher was the only student-athlete in Carpinteria to be named All-CiF.

Turning lemons into lemonade, the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC), Carpinteria Unit hopes to turn temporarily closed facilities into an opportunity to make the club better than ever for its members.

Anybody interested in doing a one-person project that can be accomplished while also adhering to social distancing requirements is invited to volunteer their time and skill to the Carpinteria Club. UBGC will provide all necessary materials and volunteers should bring their own tools. Additionally, UBGC will hang a banner in the club, along with other marketing benefits, for every person or business that provides a service during this time.

“We are looking for licensed electricians, plumbers, roofers, landscapers, painters, artists and mechanics to lend a socially-distant hand to make a difference,” said Michael Baker, CEO of UBGC. “So many incredibly talented people are shut-in and are looking to get out and do something. This is a great opportunity for anyone that would like to donate their time and talent to improving our clubs.”

Alena Steen is coordinator of the Carpinteria Garden Park, an organic community garden located at 4855 5th St., developed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Rotary Club goes virtual

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon held its first ever 100 percent online meeting on March 26. Special guest presenters Laurie and Mark Matthews of Island Brewing Company reported in from the Sailing Vessel Leyna, currently moored in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The club was brought up to speed on how the pandemic has affected their trip.

Monday, March 23

3:47 a.m. / Meth Possession / 4200 block Via Real

A man and a woman were staying at a motel on Via Real. A neighboring hotel guest called to report that the man had exposed himself on the second-floor balcony. Deputies arrived and determined that there was no indecent exposure violation. While investigating the initial call for service, deputies observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. The man and woman were both issued a citation.

1:13 p.m. / Commercial Burglary / 1400 block Cravens Lane

An unknown black male forced entry through a fiberglass window and took about $2,000 worth of marijuana at a cannabis cultivation site. The burglary was captured on surveillance cameras.

Tuesday, March 24

2:13 p.m. / Commercial Burglary Arrest / 5400 block Carpinteria Avenue

A deputy recognized an individual who matched a be-on-the-lookout order for a burglary suspect that broke into a marijuana farm located on the 1400 block of Cravens Lane. Another deputy responded and interviewed the suspect, who identified himself as a transient male and admitted to breaking into the business and taking the marijuana. The man was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

3:30 p.m. / Located Missing Adult

A deputy responded to check the welfare of a woman who was reported missing. She was located at her residence and okay. She was subsequently removed from the Missing Persons System.

2 p.m / Theft / 5000 block 6th Street

An unknown suspect hacked the victim’s account and took $18,000. No suspect information.

Tuesday, March 24

5:21 a.m. / Suspected DUI / Hwy 101 North at Bailard Avenue

Deputies conducted a Code 5 stakeout along Highway 101 Northbound south of Bailard Avenue in pursuit of a “beon-the-lookout” from Ventura Police Department. Ventura police officers had called on the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office deputies to continue a pursuit across county lines of a possible DUI driver in a red Mazda Miata that was driving on its rims.

A deputy spotted the vehicle near the Hwy. 150 junction and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, who was driving at speeds of 40 mph and below, failed to yield as he drove in and out of the left shoulder and the two left lanes. Sparks were beginning to fly from the wheels.

Given the totality and public safety, the deputies applied a pursuit intervention technique, which caused the vehicle to seize up and stop.

The driver, a 32-year-old male from El Monte, complied and was apprehended without sustaining injury. It was then discovered that he had what appeared to be a stab wound on his upper left chest, which he stated happened in West Covina a few days ago and would only state that he was attacked and defended himself.

An ambulance responded to evaluate the man, who was not found to be intoxicated. The wound was healing well per the statement of the medic on scene.

The Mazda was towed, and the man was transported and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, March 26

2:45 p.m. / Meth Possession / 3800 block Via Real

A man was observed driving in the area and his California driver’s license is known to be suspended. A traffic stop was initiated, and his vehicle was searched.

A small amount of meth was found. The man stated that he recently purchased the vehicle and denied knowing it was displaying false registration tabs. The passenger was found to be in possession of a light bulb used to smoke meth.

4:05 p.m. / Meth Possession / Linden and Sandyland avenues

A man was observed riding his bike on Linden Avenue after meeting with two other men. He was stopped pursuant to his unsupervised probation terms allowing search and seizure. He was found in possession of meth and a meth pipe.

6:34 p.m. / Battery / 4100 block Via Real

Two men became involved in a physical fight after a dispute of who was going to pay for a hotel room. The subjects had met the day prior and spent the night at the motel. Both subjects had visible injuries to their faces. Both subjects requested prosecution for battery against the other.

The case will be sent to the district attorney for review

Saturday, March 28

4:03 p.m. / Breaking and Entering / 4500 block Carpinteria Avenue

A tall, thin white male adult entered a locked third floor restaurant at a local hotel. The suspect moved several cameras to avoid identification but did not appear to take anything. The suspect left prior to the deputies’ arrival and was seen in the hotel’s parking lot. The suspect fled through a gate southbound on Santa Ynez Road toward Aliso School. Witnesses observed the suspect jump the fence to the rear of Aliso School. A search of the area was unsuccessful.

Saturday, March 28

1:57 a.m. / Recovered Vehicle / 5700 block Via Real

Ventura Police Department asked local deputies to check an address on Via Real after stopping a possible stolen vehicle.

It was confirmed the vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle, a 1993 white Honda Civic, was recovered.

3:57 a.m. / Vehicle Burglary / 4900 block Dorrance Way

Deputies responded to an alleged vehicle burglary on Dorrance Way. The reporting party found a man inside her vehicle looking through the center console. The man was described as a white male with a gray hoodie, gray sweats and black sneakers. There was no forced entry to the vehicle and deputies were unable to locate the suspect. Three dollars in change was stolen from the vehicle.

Being in lockdown due to the COVID-19 virus has been difficult for people whose fitness routine includes regular visits to a studio or gym. Fortunately, for Carpinterians there are more than a few options they can turn to online to get their exercise fix from familiar faces.

TipTop Fitness

Certified Personal Trainer Laurence Larsen of TipTop Fitness has held classes online for over six months. Larsen can often be seen getting clients in shape at Rincon Fitness on Carpinteria Avenue, owned by Kevin Twohy and his wife Louisa, but since the gym has been closed, the exercise guru has been holding his courses strictly online.

“I was working with some people online even a year ago, but definitely during the last two weeks a lot of people want to switch to online,” said Larsen. He offers a self-functional approach to promote fitness. “It’s not just about big muscles, it’s about trying to use your body in functional ways and staying healthy.”

Coach Jesse is now guiding students in martial arts practice online.

Located in the Casitas Shopping Center, Way of the Orient Martial Arts Academy teaches hapkido and taekwondo. Hapkido mixes Japanese jujitsu and judo and taekwondo is known as the art of kicks and punches. Coach Jesse Ruiz has packed the online program with tutorials, for techniques on simple leg takedowns and throws using folk style, freestyle and Greco wrestling. Taekwondo teachings will also soon be available online.

“We have a question and answer time at the end of the class and people say they feel relaxed and gently worked out,” said Kolbe. “I offer six classes a week and it is working well.”

Evolation Yoga

Founded by Mark Drost and Zefea Samson in Buffalo, New York, Evolation Yoga soon branched out to the West Coast, opening a studio in Santa Barbara in 2012. In 2015, they opened another studio at the Big Yellow House in Summerland, and later moved from Summerland to Carpinteria. Today, Evolation’s studio is located on Carpinteria Avenue across from the Community Pool.

Evolation offers teachings in various yoga styles: hot yoga, based on the Bikram discipline, flow, also known as Vinyasa, and Yin which consists of a limited number of postures.

After closing its doors temporarily on March 16, Evolation has built up their online class offerings. With studios all over the world, Carpinteria students have a multitude of options in their familiar Evolation techniques. The studio noted that after a local student took a class with a teacher streaming from Turin, Italy, together with practitioners in Lebanon and Germany, she commented, “This was an amazing way to practice and feel love for our world and each other.”
