The California Avocado Festival rocked Carpinteria’s world last weekend, Oct. 5–7, with nearly 100,000 people flowing through downtown, enjoying the festival, raising money for nonprofits and learning about the town’s agricultural legacy. Fire Station to hold open house

The Carpinteria Summerland Fire Protection District will hold an open house at Fire Station 61 at 911 Walnut Ave., on Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will meet the new Chief, Greg Fish, take a tour of the fire station, meet Sparky the fire dog, watch a live auto extrication at 1 p.m., spray water from a fire hose, learn bystander CPR and other emergency preparation. Medicare enrollment period begins Oct. 15

The annual enrollment period for Medicare is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time people can review current Plan D Prescription Drug Plans or Medicare Advantage Plans and make any changes to be effective Jan. 1, 2019. WEV offers direct relief to small businesses

With a financial contribution from Wells Fargo, Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV) is offering business recovery grants of up to $10,000 to small and minority businesses that were adversely impacted by the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flows. Eligibility criteria includes lost revenue due to closures and/or changed and disrupted customer patterns; suspension of operations; plant, property and equipment damages; damaged inventory; and other direct/indirect costs relating to the disasters.

Diverse small businesses (e.g. women, minority, veterans, LGBTQ-owned) are particularly encouraged to apply. Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee celebrates 30 years of feminist activism

After three decades of political activism including getting feminist candidates elected and appointed to public office, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC) will hold a special dinner to commemorate this anniversary on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Hyatt Centric. When SBWPC began in 1988, members were excited to band together as politically engaged women from across the professional spectrum with the goal of contributing to gender equity, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity. Carpinteria City Council If the City of Carpinteria were a body, its hardworking departments would be the hands while the City Council would be the decision-making brain. In this year’s election, Carpinterians will vote-in three councilmembers from among the five candidates competing for the seats. Incumbents Gregg Carty, Al Clark and Brad Stein seek to retain their seats. Newcomers Roy Lee and Dar Ringling have thrown their hats into the ring. My experience as a past president of the Carpinteria Valley Association and the Carpinteria Creek Committee, as well as serving as a director of the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, has given me the background to address the full range of environmental issues that Carpinteria faces.

While on the City Council, I led the effort to reduce plastic and Styrofoam usage, implemented the Creeks Preservation Program, stood up to Measure “J” (Venoco’s ballot initiative to slant drill in Carpinteria), implemented the City’s Sustainability Policy, proposed a ban on all oil drilling and fracking in the city, and repeatedly protected our small town from overdevelopment.

For good reason, Carpinterians are shocked to learn of the possibility of new fracking in our valley (CVN, Vol. 24, No. 50). Fracking poses serious health impacts and threatens Carpinteria with irreversible environmental degradation.

Fracking risks include contaminating our precious water supply with toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, gas explosions, the loss of potentially millions of gallons of water, open storage of large amounts of toxic wastewater and development of new roads and gas pipelines. And fracking has been linked to earthquakes, particularly in areas where contaminated wastewater is re-injected onsite.

While the proposed fracking site sits beyond the City’s jurisdiction, its impacts could have dire consequences for residents throughout the Carpinteria Valley. We need to follow this issue closely and put pressure on the County Board of Supervisors to deny this proposal.

Sea level rise from climate change, a result of burning fossil fuels, is a serious threat to Carpinteria. Impacts are predicted to arise through flooding creeks, as well as rising oceans. I sit on the City’s General Plan Update Committee, which has been studying this issue for over a year. We have released a draft comprehensive report that maps the vulnerability of structures, ecology and infrastructure to flooding. Further study will analyze various adaptation strategies including barriers, redevelopment and, yes, retreat.

We need to do our part to reduce our fossil fuel emissions and reduce the extent of further impacts. I urge all Carpinterians to review the General Plan Update study on this issue (the draft report is available on the City’s website) and to participate in future meetings of the General Plan Update Committee. Although the extent and timing of impacts is uncertain, we must begin planning for this issue now.

To many people, the term “fracking” provokes a fear of earthquakes and contaminated water. Although fracking has been practiced for over 60 years, the general public will benefit from education on what it is, its impact on our local environment, and why it is controversial. While there may be evidence touting the benefits of fracking, our leadership must consider whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks, how viable the threat of earthquakes and contamination are, and whether fracking aligns with Carpinteria’s identity as a community pioneering efforts to minimize waste and prioritize use of renewable energy.

My stance is that fracking does not have a place in the Carpinteria Valley.

Another recent finding that demands the attention of our community and local leadership is that of rising sea levels. This news also conjures up fears about the safety and livelihood of our coastal community. Combating potential threats caused by rapid changes in our environment will require City Council members to consult and collaborate with state and federal leadership and experts in the scientific community to develop hybrid strategies of combating this rising issue, whether it means to revise our future developments or possible relocation of the affected areas. Keeping our Carpinteria community informed and able to speak directly with experts is another important responsibility of local leadership.

The spirit of education was in the air at the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Breakfast, sponsored by COX Communications, on Oct. 5, at the Rincon Beach Club. On taking the podium, State Assemblymember Monique Limón, State Senator Hannah Beth Jackson and County Supervisor Das Williams all spoke to the challenges and achievements of local teachers and schools, before individually presenting commendations to Mandi de Witte, Carpinteria High School science teacher and 2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year.

I believe it is our responsibility to protect our environment.

We have been entrusted with one of the most beautiful places on planet earth and we should work to keep it that way. That means changing the paradigm of the necessity for fracking to realizing there are other clean, sustainable energy options.

Fracking, specifically hydraulic fracturing, uses a mixture of water, chemical additives and sand. My first concern is the high use of water. It is critical that we do all we can to conserve our water. My next concern is the chemical additives and their potential to negatively affect our health and environment. I believe the possibility exists that the risks are being underestimated and may not be realized for decades. Additionally, fracking requires specialized training and safety protocols, so it would not provide many local jobs. I don’t believe fracking is the answer.

I think the bigger issue is the need to convert to a 100 percent clean, economical and sustainable form of energy.

I will create a task force to develop a plan to accomplish this goal, incrementally, by 2030 (or sooner).

Converting our main power source to solar and the financial programs needed to do that, should be one of the top priorities. This would benefit our businesses, residents and our environment. Some of these programs already exist, but more are needed. Conversion to solar would negate the need for the new proposed gas-fired electric plant they want to build in our area. Additionally, we need to encourage research and development to find breakthrough technologies that make clean energy abundant and inexpensive.

In summary, we should not allow fracking in Carpinteria Valley but work towards a 100 percent clean, economical, sustainable energy source by 2030.

Sea level rise is an issue that needs careful attention.

Sea level rise issues come from ice melt, warming of the ocean/air and land motion. It can be exasperated by storms. Different studies have different ranges of potential risk; therefore, we need to look at all scenarios.

Ignoring the risks is not the answer. I would encourage monitoring, researching and planning what we can do to protect Carpinteria. I think one of the best solutions to lower the potential for ocean warming is by converting to clean energy.

With regard to fracking, this type of oil extraction is too much of a gamble considering Carpinteria Valley’s number one resource is its ground water supply. Why take a chance on polluting it? My stance is absolutely not. Never. Not on my watch.

With regard to sea level rise, let me start by telling you what the city has already done to adapt. Our General Plan is a road map of how the city should evolve over the next 10 to 100 years, with an emphasis on ensuring public health and safety as well as our quality of life. The General Plan Subcommittee, of which I am a member, identified sea level rise as an important issue because such a large segment of our community lives in low lying areas, not to mention businesses, schools such as Aliso, and the railroad tracks.

Keep in mind the area we know today as the Salt Marsh was originally much, much larger, and as sea levels rise those areas that lie within reclaimed marshland become more and more vulnerable to flooding during heavy storms and extreme high tides. One step to adapt that was taken early on, in conjunction with Santa Barbara County Flood Control and FEMA, was to enact a policy making property owners build new structures with a finished floor height above flood levels.

A drive through the beach neighborhood and old town Carpinteria gives a clear visual of the elevation differences between new construction and older dwellings.

Another attempt to adapt was the installation of a backflow device (commonly referred to as a “flapper” device) in the Salt Marsh which prevents high tide water from entering our storm drain system while allowing street water runoff into the marsh. And by now everyone is familiar with the “dike like” sand berm that is built on the beach every fall/winter which offers private property protection from flooding and our public beach protection from erosion.

Assessing and adapting to sea level rise cannot be ignored. Working with other government agencies and studying tactics currently in use in other parts of the world, the City of Carpinteria will continue to address and adapt as needed.

I am against fracking in Carpinteria Valley. We cannot take any chance of damaging our ground water, which is vital to our valley.

Also, the fracking process can pollute our air and contribute to climate change. We must care for and protect our community and environment for the generations to come.

Coastal California is already experiencing the early impacts of a rising sea level, including coastal erosion and more extensive tidal flooding during storms. We must abide by the California Coastal Act, one of the state’s primary coastal management laws. Effective implementation of this Act and the protection of our coast will address global sea level rise. This presents challenges of a new magnitude for our city and we are in the process of meeting those challenges. I believe adaptation actions and hazard mitigation undertaken today will prevent much greater losses than will occur if action is not taken.

City Council honors Boys & Girls Club members

At the City Council Meeting on Oct. 8, councilmembers honored 39 boys and girls who have recently reached Gold Card Status at the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC), Carpinteria Unit. This title is bestowed upon the children who have attended the Boys & Girls Club for 105 days in the same year.

UBGC serves more than 2,700 children in Santa Barbara County. Michael Baker, CEO of UBGC highlighted the lasting impact that this organization has on the newly achieved Gold Card members stating, “A child that attends a Boys & Girls Club for 105 days in the same calendar year is twice as likely to graduate high school on time and twice as likely to lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Many children were present at the meeting to be honored by the council members.

City Manager reports on cannabis relations, Salt Marsh debris clearing, and emergency preparedness

City Manager Dave Durflinger reported that the California Coastal Commission will consider the County’s cannabis relations. As cannabis operations have become a key issue for the city, Durflinger wanted to make the public aware that the Coastal Commission’s staff reports

on this issue are available on the Coastal Commission’s website and that the City’s comments and questions on these reports are available on the City’s website under Cannabis Regulations. The Coastal Commission’s meetings are live-streamed and available to the public.

Durflinger also brought attention to upcoming activity in the area around the salt marsh. After the Jan. 9 debris flow, there was some initial clearing but more clearing will commence the week of Oct. 14. This will be a smaller operation, but it will still involve a large number of trucks, dust and dirt. The City will attempt to mitigate the dust and dirt through the use of rumble strips, but notes that clearing this area is important before the coming winter season. Durflinger notes, “The channels that lead through the salt marsh and the salt marsh itself accommodated those flows here in the valley fortunately, so we didn’t see the kind of devastation when the flows jumped the channel in Montecito. For that reason, it’s important to keep the channels clear and the debris basins clear.”

In relation to the Thomas Fire and the subsequent debris flow, there will be an emergency preparedness meeting for the public at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 941 Walnut Ave. Translation services will be available.

Council votes to continue appeal on development

In a 4-0 vote (with Councilmember Stein absent) the Councilmembers unanimously voted to continue the appeal hearing of a residential single-family conversion to a five-unit multifamily residential apartment development until the next City Council Meeting on Oct. 22.

The City Council first appealed the Planning Commission’s approval of this project during the Aug. 27 City Council meeting, citing several concerns they would like to have addressed before moving forward— most notably, traffic and safety issues. The appeal will be revisited at the next meeting when the supplemental research and analysis will be available.

Prevent animal cruelty, “yes” on Prop 12

If you care about healthy food and animal welfare, don’t overlook Proposition 12 on your November ballot. A “yes” vote for Prop 12 is a vote to level the playing field for California’s farmers and to improve the lives of millions of chickens, veal calves and pigs across the U.S. Ten years ago, Santa Barbara County voted by 70 percent for Prop 2, which banned cruel confinement for laying hens, veal calves and pregnant pigs in California. Farmers had seven years to transition to the new standards; even so, some have tried to avoid compliance. Prop 12 would clarify minimum space requirements to ensure that farm animals get the conditions that voters want. Further, it would extend the same requirements to products raised in other states but sold here. That means California farmers wouldn’t have to compete against cheaper, more poorly produced eggs, veal and pork from other states.

And it means that California consumers would be able to count on all such products being less likely to be contaminated, since studies show that intensive farming practices lead to higher rates of salmonella and other forms of contamination.

Humane, appropriate housing for farm animals is healthier for humans and it grants the animals that feed us some basic quality of living conditions. So, when you see that ballot, look for Prop 12 and vote YES— for California farmers, for our health, and for the animals.

Vote “no” on Prop 6

In November, California voters will need to decide how to vote on Proposition 6, which, if passed, would repeal the 12cent per gallon gas tax imposed last year.

I urge voters to vote no on Proposition 6.

The recent collapse of the bridge in Italy is a reminder that bad infrastructure kills. We have over 1,600 seismically deficient bridges and overpasses in California, how long can we afford to put off these critical repairs? There’s no doubt that a tax increase will hurt, those supporting Prop 6 estimate that it will cost a family of four $779 a year. On the other hand, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, less dramatic problems with the conditions of our roads, such as rough roads and potholes, already cost each driver $844 a year. Keep in mind that this is the first state gas tax increase in 23 years.

Contrary to what supporters of Prop 6 say, the state can’t cover the cost of needed repairs with the current state surplus of $16 billion, that is only a tiny percentage of what is needed. Moreover, a ballot measure passed in June guarantees that the new tax revenues will be used only on transportation projects.

Californians drive a lot and when we do, we want smooth roads. As my father always said, there’s no such thing as a free lunch—so if we want good roads, we have to pay for them. If you want our roads maintained and improved, vote “no” on Proposition 6 to ensure that we have the money to do so.

Responsible growth in the Vallecito neighborhood

Members of Faith Lutheran Church are heartbroken over the City Council’s decision to send them back to the drawing board. I can’t blame them.

I live near the church, which is a good neighbor. Even so, when the story poles for the proposed project first went up, I was stunned by the size of the homes and the density, made possible by shared, ally-like, driveways.

At both the ARB and Planning Commission meetings, Vallecito neighbors were frustrated that our concerns about traffic and parking were largely ignored.

Finally, at the City Council meeting, the realities of the proposed project were examined in the context of the neighborhood and the future of our city at large.

Some called this a PUD (Planned Unit Development), not in keeping with the

current zoning of low density, singlefamily homes. The practicality of the shared driveways was reviewed.

It fell to our City Council to make the difficult decisions.

The ramifications of this project are bigger than the church and the Vallecito neighborhood. Approving this type of shared driveway would set a precedent for our entire city. It opens the door for much higher density in neighborhoods with small single-family homes. This is about land use. Do we want a highdensity city? Or do we want neighborhoods where children can still play in a backyard shaded by mature trees?

Our City Council had the courage and good sense to take the long view. None of this minimizes my empathy for the church. The City Council’s position is that those responsible for shepherding the project through the system should have done a “concept review” before drafting floor plans. In other words, the project never should have gotten this far. The city needs to review its current process for evaluating prospective development.

The reason many people voted for Donald Trump can be stated in two words, “Supreme Court.” They were fed up with the left using the court as its own legislative body. Justices are supposed to rule whether a law is constitutional, not how they wish the constitution had been written.

The confirmation process for Justice Kavanaugh was the most shameful episode in modern history. Democrats established a new low. I do not question whether Dr. Ford was assaulted. What is deplorable is that the Democrats pushed this forward even though there was not one shred of evidence to support the allegation that Justice Kavanaugh was involved. All nine witnesses interviewed by the FBI had no knowledge of anything alleged.

Our entire legal system is grounded in a doctrine that everyone must be considered innocent until proven guilty. The legal standard that protects us all is that it must be proven, “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Even a Supreme Court nominee deserves this.

Elections have consequences

Barack Obama, in an arrogant tone, proclaimed, “elections have consequences.” The consequences he sought were to (in his own words) “fundamentally transform the United States of America.”

Allow me to translate. He wanted to “transform” this great country into a socialist state. His favorite “guide book” was Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.

One of those “rules” was, “Control health care and you control the people.” It is scary to think how close he came to this.

Well, elections do have consequences.

The consequences of the 2016 election were the rejection of the radical left.

People rejected the increasing government takeover of their lives. Look at any of the current (and all positive) economic indicators (unemployment, job growth, inflation, the stock market, etc.) and you will see that the American people clearly made the right choice.

The journey to memorialize her years at the ranch began by putting together a scrapbook of photos and writing detailed captions. “My oldest son asked me to put a scrapbook together for him, and then it grew into writing down the stories. Once I started writing, everything came back to me. It was a very interesting life, not having electricity, for instance, and having to go by kerosene lanterns. To me the ranch was my rock—a place I knew was always there, and a regular home.

“I’m very happy with how my books came out. I wanted to write them for my sons in the hope that it gives them a little insight into my childhood years. And for my cousin, Don Manville, who also grew up on the ranch, it’s a collection of good memories for him. Don ended up being my favorite cousin in later years, after my grandad sold the ranch in 1948. We were only 14 at the time and not old enough to do anything about the sale even though we were heartbroken over it and still are.

“I agree with Don, that growing up on the Manville Ranch, even part-time as I did, was a very special period of my life.

Life was hard, but worthwhile. I wish all youngsters today could have the privilege of ranch life as it was in those days gone by.”

Carpinteria-based artist Beverly Decker will present her work “Stay” at the Inkspots show “Press On” at 643 Project Space.

Inkspots announce new show

The Inkspots of San Buenaventura will present “Press On,” a collection of new works by Ventura County’s only printmaking group in the exhibit, at 643 Project Space in Ventura. “Press On” is the collective’s 11th annual exhibition of new works on paper. The exhibition will be held from Nov. 2 to Nov. 30, 2018, with an artist opening reception on Nov. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. During the First Friday ArtWalk, there will be a free drawing for the Inkspots 2018 FOLIO (10 original prints) at 7 p.m.

The inkspots of San Buenaventura are a group of artists dedicated to creating original prints using a variety of techniques including, etching, collagraph, linocut, monoprint, monotype, woodblock and digital manipulation.

Artists hail from Carpinteria, Ventura, Ojai, Summerland and Santa Barbara.

This year’s exhibit will include works by Christina Altfeld, Beverly Decker, Virginia Furmanski, Rosemarie C. Gebhart, Judy Gibbs, Bay Howell, Tiger Huang, Colleen M. Kelly, Sandra McCullough, Inés Monguió, Leslie Plimpton and Monica Wiesblott.

Wildling Museum shows abstract art for the first time

The Santa Barbara Abstract Art Collective and the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature present “Nature Abstracted,” a juried exhibition of abstract art with a nature theme. This is the first exhibition of abstract art to be shown at the Wildling. The exhibit shows 30 works by 19 artists, introducing viewers to abstract interpretations of nature. The exhibit will be on view Oct. 3 to Feb. 5, 2019. A reception will be held on Oct. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Wildling Museum, 1511-B Mission Drive, Solvang.

Volunteers from the Rincon Riders mountain bike club helped students adjust their new helmets, and there were many different colors and styles to choose from.

Having heaps of fun at Howard School carnival

The Howard School held its fall family pot luck and carnival on Oct. 6 at the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria campus. Families were treated to fine and folksy fair food prepared by Howard School parent Chef Rossignol. Plates were piled high with heaps of homemade food by parents who brought sides to share. California Avocado Festival paints the town green photos by Robin KaRlsson

The 32nd annual California Avocado Festival was all Carpinteria “avo” wanted, including avo-ice cream, avo-brownies, avo-beer, avo-merch and 75 acts on four stages over three days. Life was certainly not the pits for volunteers who scooped out guacamole from giant vats, served beer and sold goods, raising close to $100,000 for local nonprofits, according to Avofest Board President Gary Dobbins.

Notice of Public Hearing Carpinteria Unified School District Real Property District Advisory Committee Please take notice that on November 8, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the Carpinteria Unified School District Conference Room, 1400 Linden Ave, Carpinteria 93013 the Real Property District Advisory Committee (DAC) will conduct a public hearing on its preliminary recommendations concerning disposition of two unused school sites. At the same meeting, following the close of the public hearing, the DAC may submit its final recommendation to the CUSD Governing Board. The preliminary recommendations and background information are as follows:

1. DAC recommendation. Designate the Whitney Avenue site (Temple Street in Summerland, 6.84 acres) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the site in accordance with law.

Background: This vacant site was acquired in approximately 1955 and has been unused during the interim. Earlier plans to potentially relocate the existing Summerland School to this location have been studied and rejected. The site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

2. DAC recommendation. Designate the 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave. sites (two contiguous properties, 3.78 and 3.20 acres, with improvements) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the sites in accordance with law.

Background: These sites were acquired in 2000 for a possible new school.

However, sustained enrollment declines have ruled out any future utilization for a new school. This site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

Sale proceeds from these properties are restricted to capital projects and would be available to fund facility needs not included in the Measure U bond program.

The public is invited to attend and provide comments. Written comments are also welcome and should be addressed to the CUSD DAC, 1400 Linden Avenue, Carpinteria 93013. Written comments need to be received by October 31, 2018.

CHS alum looks ahead to a possible pro football career

While football fans love the game’s long bombs, big hits and breakaway runs, often times it’s the small details that decide the outcome. Carpinteria High School football alum Connor Kelsey knows this, and as early as the seventh grade his coaches started to notice that he had a knack for long snapping the ball to the punter.

With his grandfather Chuck Kelsey a fixture as the announcer for the school’s football games for 25 years, and his father Chris Kelsey taking over the helm for nine, Connor was destined to be a Warrior. Honing his craft on the special teams squad while playing at both wide receiver and defensive back, he was named Special Teams Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

With the notion of transforming his skill into a potential NFL career, Kelsey attended the Chris Rubio School of Long Snapping. Participating at the camp, his talent earned him high marks and nation-wide attention. “I was 17 in the nation and five in California,” said the class of 2014 Carpinteria High grad. The rankings earned him offers to play football from the Universities of Oregon and Washington, and Utah State, before he accepted an offer from Oregon State.

At the university level however, the competition intensified as two other long snappers played ahead of Kelsey during his first couple of years on the team. But he persevered and has positioned himself into the starting job for the Beavers for the past two years. Now in his senior year, despite the team’s slow start, he has enjoyed the ride. “We played in front of 103,000 people, that’s pretty cool,” said Kelsey, who went on to make two tackles in the game.

Although Carpinteria High School has had its share of championships on the gridiron, it’s been a rarity to have Warriors compete in Division I football. Among those who have are: Doug Pauley, Class of ‘77 who went onto Ohio State, Class of ’82 Don Enlow to the University of Utah and Class of ‘08 Eric Stein to the Naval Academy. Recruited out of high school to DI-AA Cal Poly SLO, ’05 graduate Chris Gocong went on to play in the NFL. Class of ‘78’s Nick Mullahey started at SBCC then went to Notre Dame, and spent a few years in the NFL. Kelsey plans to enter the NFL draft next year, but figures he may have to latch on to some team as a free agent. His odds of playing professionally have improved with the possibility of a new league on the horizon, the Alliance Football League. “(The league) will be competing against the NFL, guys will be making good amounts of money,” explained Kelsey of the league’s $70 to 80,000 minimum salary level. Two of his college teammates, Richard Mullaney and Brandon Arnold have already joined Arizona’s entry in the league.

In the meantime, Kelsey plans to earn his degree in Digital Communications with a minor in Business. But he hasn’t given up on his dream to turn football into a living. “As long as I have this opportunity while I’m right here, I’m still working out … I think it’s definitely worth a shot,” said Kelsey—one Warrior who won’t be counted out.

The Carpinteria High School football team traveled south to take on Malibu in a Citrus Coast League matchup, coming up short against the Sharks in a 14-10 loss. The Warriors are now 1-3 in League and 4-4 overall. The team will get a week off, as they have an open date on the schedule.

Carpinteria’s Jacob Macias made an eightyard touchdown run with two minutes left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 score. A fumble in the second half opened the door for Malibu as they recovered the ball on the Warrior 34-yard line. The Sharks ran one in but missed the extra point, allowing Carpinteria to keep the lead with five minutes left in the third at 7-6. But another turnover on an interception led to a Malibu touchdown and a two-point conversion to make the score 14-7 with three minutes left in the third.

The score remained the same heading into the final quarter. The Warriors pulled to within four on a 28-yard field goal by Alberto Arroyo with seven minutes to play. They got one more shot to overtake the Sharks, but were unable to finish the drive inside Malibu territory, turning the ball over on downs with around a minute to play.

Carpinteria quarterback Vance Keiser completed six of 13 passes for 59 yards and three interceptions. Jacob Macias made 26 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown, and Isaac De Alba caught four balls for 37 yards. “We definitely wanted to try to run the ball, control the game until we get all our receivers back,” said Warriors coach Rick Candaele, whose team came into the game without wideouts Jonathan Mora and Brady Sturdivan, or tight end Will Collins.

Carpinteria’s next game will be the Homecoming game vs. Santa Clara at Valley Memorial Stadium on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.

Cate perseveres against Flintridge Prep CVN REPORT

The Cate School football team got all they could handle on the road on Saturday, Oct. 6, as the Flintridge Prep Rebels used a potent offensive attack to keep the Rams on the defense. Despite the adversity, the Rams dug their heels in and came away with a 62-52 victory. Cate is now 5-0.

The miscues started early for Cate when the Rams fumbled the opening kickoff and Flintridge scored just a few plays later to take a 6-0 lead. It was the first time since August the Rams have trailed in a game. The Cate offense sparkled all game long however, as senior Jack Deardorff had three touchdowns on the ground (22, two and 65 yards) as well as two in the air. The two passing scores went to juniors Thomas Nettesheim for 15 yards and Khadim Pouye for 20 yards. Senior Drew Anastasio had a great game on the ground, rushing for three touchdowns as well (35, 11 and 17 yards). Sophomore William Deardorff also found the end zone for Cate, scoring on a 23-yard run. Nettesheim had several great catches during the game, while the offensive line of seniors Sebastian Richardson, Scott Holmes, and Ethan Cassulo blocked well all game long. Cate is back on the road on Friday, Oct. 12, when they play the Villanova Wildcats in Ojai at 7 p.m.

Girls volleyball

October 2 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team faced off against the Santa Paula Cardinals, winning in four, three games to one. Starting libero Mariela Guerrero number-four helped the Warriors win the game by adding 27 digs from the back row. Number-six setter Mary Sawlaw ended the night with 31 assists. Numbertwo outside hitter “Malia Shellabarger moved up from the JV and performed solid for the Carpinteria varsity team Tuesday night by adding eight kills, four aces,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. The Warriors improves its Citrus Coast League record to 4-4 and overall record to 4-6.

October 3 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team traveled south to take on the St. Bonaventure Seraphs, falling to the Ventura school, 3-0. “ The Warriors had a lot of energy on the court and continued aggressive throughout the match, but St. Bonaventure was a force to be dealt with,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. The match scores were: 25-18, 25-22 and 25-20. The Warriors Citrus Coast League record drops to 4-5 and overall to 4-7.

Cross Country

October 2 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in Citrus Coast League Cluster Meet Number-two held at Elkins Golf course in Fillmore on Tuesday. The Warriors top finishers for the girls included: Shayla Alvarez who finished in eighth place with a time of 21:10, Savannah Alvarez in 10th place at 21:43 and Kate Cooney in 21st at 23:26. The girls finished fifth place in the meet. For the boys, Caleb Classen finished in 13th in 17:17, Ytxzae Enriquez, 24th with a time of 18:06 and Dexter Gordon in 32nd in 18:45. The boys also finished 5th place in the cluster meet.

October 4 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team defeated Hueneme in a Citrus Coast League match, 17-1. In singles, Josie Gordon celebrated her birthday by going 3-0. “Vicky Delk went 2-0 and was replaced by Emma Lapidus who played great in her only set, winning 6-2,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Sydney Endow went 2-1, winning her last two sets. In doubles, Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon went 3-0, not losing a game. Karla Marin/Amy Perez also went 3-0, and Leigh Pluma went 2-0 with Vivi Torres and 1-0 with Jessica Santillan.

October 9 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team donned their pink t-shirts and pink bows in school, and later used pink tennis balls and pink grips, to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month in an 18-0 Citrus Coast League win against Fillmore. Jessica Santillan, Emma Lapidus and Sydney Endow each had three, 6-0 set wins. In doubles, Amy Perez/Karla Marin also posted three 6-0 wins on the day. Vivi Torres went 2-0 with Leigh Pluma, and then finished the sweep by pairing with Angelina Torres. Jeannette Carrillo also went 3-0, winning two sets with Lexi Persoon and one set with Jazmyn Martinez. Carpinteria is now 14-4 overall and 7-0 League.

September 27 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team competed in Citrus Coast League Match Number-three at Port Hueneme’s Seabee Golf Club. Freshmen Natali Elizarraraz and Diana Higareda shot a 69 and 64, respectively. And, fellow freshmen Ruby Varela and Sydney McCaskey shot a 72 and 74 also. Senior Danni Fulton shot 70. The team’s final score was 349. Fillmore won the team title, with a total of 256. Low round individually was shot by Alexis Keyhoe from Nordhoff and Sami Ibarra from Fillmore both firing a 47.

Cate School Girls Volleyball

October 3 – The Cate School girls volleyball team swept Santa Clara, 3-0 to go 8-0 in the Frontier League. Freshman middle Chidera Chukwumerji led the team tonight with 14 kills and four blocks. Maya Blattberg followed with eight kills. “Grace Blankenhorn was solid on defense with 14 digs …,” said Rams coach Greg Novak.

Grace Johnson also contributed 10 digs. “We played back-to-back matches but we didn’t show any signs of being tired,” said Novak.

October 9 – The Cate School girls volleyball team improved to 9-0 with a win over their rival from Ojai. “Thacher’s fan base turned out and was very loud, it was a fun atmosphere to have such a loud gym,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Kenzie Davidson and Grace Johnson had four aces apiece, and Elise Guerrand-Hermes had five for a team total of 18. Guerrand-Hermes had nine kills, Chidera Chukwumerji had six and Davidson followed with five. “Riley Borchardt had a good night setting and holding the offense together,” said Novak.

October 9 – The Cate School girls tennis team continues to roll towards a potential perfect season, defeating Thacher, 13-5 in Tri-Valley League play. Cate was led by junior Grace Fuss, who dropped two games across her three sets-of-play at the top singles position. The still-undefeated doubles pairing of senior Sarah Polowczak and sophomore Fritze Mayer matched Fuss’ performance, losing two games in their three rounds. Junior Carol Cai battled back from a 6-4 defeat in the first round to win her second and third sets 6-1, while senior/freshman pairing Sydney Burton/Aminah Hill won their two rounds, beating Thacher’s two strongest teams 6-1, 6-2 before being substituted. Another senior/freshman pairing, Jennifer Soh/Ashi Kamra went 2-0 on the day, with Soh completing the sweep with fellow senior Kate Tunnell in the final round-of-play. The win, Cate’s 10th on the season, makes it four consecutive seasons of double-digit wins for the Rams.

October 3 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team faced Fillmore at the Community Pool for their fourth league game of the season, coming away with a 16-2 win. “Coby Gonzalez had a great performance from the two-meter position, showing off his stellar growth through the season,” said Warriors assistant coach Sergio Castaneda. “Ben Persoon had a great performance with great defensive positioning that shut down any opportunity of Fillmore scoring when he was in the water, while also making intelligent offensive movements that netted the team

“A Simple Favor” cVn

duncan’s reel deal m at t d u n c a n The aptly named Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) is an annoyingly on-top-of-it mom. Most parents feel accomplished if everyone still has a pulse at the end of the day. But not Stephanie. This single mom (that’s right, she does it by herself) is an ever-vigilant watcher of her son, Miles (Joshua Satine). She volunteers at Miles’ school far more than is required or needed or even wanted, she cooks gourmet dinners and she puts Mr. Clean to shame—all while maintaining a cheerful demeanor and snappy appearance.

She also has a popular mom’s video blog.

Yet, Stephanie doesn’t have any mom friends. (I wonder why?) She wants them desperately, but she just can’t find them.

That is until Miles and his classmate, Nicky (Ian Ho), absolutely insist on having a play date. Stephanie is game. But then Nicky’s mom Emily (Blake Lively) walks in. Emily is smart and sharply dressed, but also busy, short-tempered, crass and just wants to make it clear that she’s not having any of it, no matter what “it” is. She eventually agrees to the play date, but only because she’s lazy with her son and doesn’t want to put the effort into telling him “no.” Plus, it dawns on her that Stephanie is basically a free babysitter.

Stephanie and Emily end up getting to know each other a bit. And they are quite an odd pair. Whereas Stephanie is wholesome, sweet, a bit naïve, and, most of all, way into the whole mom thing, Emily doesn’t care, not even a little bit, about the whole mom thing—path of least resistance for her—nor does she care about politeness, niceties, social convention, early-afternoon sobriety or just about anything else other than her high-powered job in the fashion industry.

Emily is doing Emily, and that’s about all there is to it.

The relationship between Stephanie and Emily works for both of them.

Stephanie has a mom friend—a hip one at that—and Emily has, well, someone to pick her kid up from school when she’s running late (which is a lot). It’s a strange relationship, to be sure. But it’s oddly symbiotic.

Then one day Emily goes missing. Earlier in the day she called Stephanie to ask her to pick up Nicky, which, as ever, Stephanie was happy to do. But then it was dinner time, and then bath time and then bed time—and still no Emily. It’s only after several days that Stephanie is even able to get in touch with Nicky’s dad/ Emily’s husband, Sean (Henry Gold-

ing). But he doesn’t know where Emily is either. No one does.

So, Stephanie does what any good friend would do: She takes to her blog.

She gives updates, encourages people to keep a look out for signs of Emily, shares her latest theories on what’s happened, and so on. Out of love for her friend, or maybe just boredom—what else is she going to do now that her bestie is gone— Stephanie takes on the role of detective, piecing together any clues that may lead to Emily.

As Stephanie digs deeper and deeper, it starts to look like Emily is not who she seemed. But, then, Stephanie ends up not being who she seemed either.

Indeed, “A Simple Favor” is one big plot knot—twist after twist after tangled twist. These plot twists don’t exactly defy expectations, at least not by the end, because there are so many of them that you sort of just stop expecting things.

Which isn’t necessarily a criticism. Plot twists are nothing new, and they can start to make a movie feel formulaic. But the unique set-up of “A Simple Favor”—a couple of martini-loving moms meeting for playdates—together with charming performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, keep the movie feeling fresh and fun.

Sure, there are some moments to groan about—like when a dorky dad foils an attempted murder at the very last instant, as if that ever happens, in a way that definitely never happens, and then goes all preachy on the potential perpetrator about how parents stick together … blah, blah, blah. All right, there’s some of that.

But, still, you could be doing worse than to sit back, grab a martini and unwind with this people-pleaser while the kids do, well, whatever it is they want to do, as long as it’s in the other room.

“A Simple Favor” is rated R for sexual content and language throughout, some graphic nude images, drug use and violence.

Rotary releases 2019 Carpinteria Calendar

Rick Joy of Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning revealed the finished product for the latest Carpinteria Calendar, a 2019 “Sensational & Special Sunrise & Sunset Edition.” Through Joy’s calendar production, he has helped Rotary raise over $130,000 from sales over the last 15 years. Many local photographers donate their original photographs to the calendar each year.

Although he will still be involved, Joy has handed the reigns over to Rotarian Beth Cox for the 2020 edition. Calendars can be purchased at Carpinteria’s local retailers, salons and restaurants.

What’s the status of the new local industry?

The City of Carpinteria began its review of a proposed cannabis ordinance last week, which could result in lifting the local moratorium on cannabis commerce, specifically to allow testing, manufacturing and delivery in the near future. Meanwhile, Santa Barbara County’s regulations, passed last spring, were considered and amended by the California Coastal Commission on Oct. 10. When enacted, these rules will apply to cannabis farmers outside of city limits in Carpinteria Valley.

Both the city process to decide which types of cannabis businesses will be permitted and the Coastal Commission hearing, highlight the complex web of laws regulating cannabis and that Carpinteria Valley has emerged as an important region in the cannabis industry.

Temporary cultivation licenses in Carpinteria Valley

In Carpinteria Valley, farmers have acquired 252 cultivation licenses, according to the state database. The large number is a result of the way the state issues licenses. Of the 252 licenses, 225 of them are 10,000 square foot licenses, known as small mixed-light licenses. Greenhouses are considered mixed-light, because plants are grown by natural sunlight and, when necessary, some artificial light.

It’s not uncommon for single farms to hold several small licenses. There are not 252 farms in the valley, or anywhere near that. According to the Cannabis Association for Responsible Producers, a nonprofit trade association whose members represent about half the farms in the valley, some of the 10,000-squarefoot licenses are in farms that grow both flowers and cannabis, and dozens of licenses are inactive.

There are nine 22,000-square-foot licenses in the valley, which are known as medium mixed-light licenses in the state system regulated by the Department of Food and Agriculture. Individual license holders are allowed only one medium license each.

Large licenses for over 22,000 square feet will not be issued until 2023, a part of the state law designed to protect small farmers during the first years of legal cultivation.

Currently all cultivation licenses in Carpinteria Valley are temporary pending final approval of Santa Barbara County’s cannabis ordinance by the California Coastal Commission. Temporary licenses are issued for 90-day periods and must be renewed under state review for growing to continue. The state will issue annual li-

censes once county regulations are passed and farms can demonstrate compliance with both local and state laws.

County rules include a buffer zone between farms and sensitive receptors like schools and childcare facilities. Also, odor control and security systems are required.

The county also capped the acreage that will be allowed for cannabis cultivation in Carpinteria Valley at 187 acres and prohibited outdoor growing in the coastal zones as a protection against odor.

The cost of doing business

There’s a common perception that farmers rushed into Carpinteria Valley to grow cannabis because it was like growing money. However, as the regulatory framework has slowly come into form, the costs of growing have increased while the price of cannabis in the legal market has declined.

Farmers pay $148 per pound to the state regardless of the wholesale price, which averaged $920 per pound for greenhouse cannabis last week, according to Cannabis Benchmarks. On top of the state tax, growers pay 4 percent of gross to Santa Barbara County, which is $37 of $920. That’s $185 or about 20 percent to state and local taxes at current market rates. The annual license fee from the state is $1 per square foot, so if a license holder has a 2-acre farm, it’s $90,000 annually just to hold the license.

Compliance with the pending county ordinance requires odor control, and the vapor phase odor abatement system many growers already use costs $200,000 to install and $10,000 per month to operate.

According to CARP Growers, setting up a farm costs over $1 million in odor control, blackout screens and renovations to meet cannabis-specific regulations.

Profit margins have shrunk as the legal cannabis industry has come on board. It’s a huge investment, and the market has trended downward while many fees to state and local agencies are fixed regardless of prices and profits.

Carpinteria-grown cannabis

Currently, adult-use cannabis cannot be legally purchased in Carpinteria. Residents can grow up to six plants at home, but to access the commercially grown product from Carpinteria, the nearest retail location is Santa Barbara, and that’s currently only available to carriers of medical recommendations.

Yes. We have seen way too much in recent times that feels unfair, unjustified and unbelievable.

I’m a born optimist, primed to see hope, and I’m a little shaky now. In the news, natural consequences for bad behavior seem elusive and, at least on the surface, it looks like too many nice guys are finishing last. Let’s name it: it’s crazy.

Where is our national character?

Where did honor go? My upbringing rested on “He who pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness and honor (Proverbs 21:21).” For those raising children, we must strive to very explicitly teach our children what is right and guide them to make things better when they have not done right.

We adults are their living textbooks; our children will learn from the examples we set, whether they are good or bad, and we are seeing way too much bad in the public square these days.

“Live so that when your children think

of fairness, caring and integrity, they think of you,” writes H. Jackson Brown, Jr., author of “Life’s Little Instruction Book.” Yeah, that’s core. Individually and as a community we should hold tight to living as fair, and caring people of integrity, guiding our children to do the same.

That’s not-crazy in the face of crazy.

We have to point out what we see as crazy to our kids, lest they mistakenly think it’s normal. More and more, it’s becoming clear to me that pointing out other people behaving badly is a part of parenting. That said, naming bad behavior has to be done carefully. It’s easy to notice with your child that someone in the public eye is behaving badly and that you certainly wouldn’t want your child to think it’s ok. It’s harder closer to home. For example, my long-ago student’s mother taught meanness rather than compassion when she helped him make a list of classmates he shouldn’t like and what they had done to be unlikeable.

Yeow, what happened to everyone makes mistakes and people who want to change their behavior can? It’s a simple twist to instead teach our children that cultivating friendships with those they respect and trust is important.

One person’s crazy is another person’s perfectly normal, and that can be darn confusing to kids and adults alike. It sure is to me. Normal feels all upside-down right now, and I think that hits most everybody at some point or another. When it does, let’s focus on what is not crazy— caring for each other, doing our best to make the world a better place, and making choices that are honorable. Let’s help give our kids stability by showing them not-crazy in a sometimes-crazy world.

Distribution and testing businesses could come to Carpinteria soon. The Carpinteria Planning Commission last week began its review of a proposed ordinance that could allow businesses involved in testing, manufacturing and delivery to operate in the industrial park on the east end of Via Real.

Voyaging to the future

a traditional wa’a visits the South Coast

The Polynesian Voyaging Canoe Hikianalia—a replica of traditional craft—sailed into Ventura Harbor on Sunday, Oct. 7, fittingly enough, one day before Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day. Having crossed the Pacific from Hawaii to Half Moon Bay, California, by wind and solar power alone, Hikianalia, captained by Lehua Kamalu, the first female captain of a Polynesian Voyaging Society wa’a (sailing canoe), made its formal arrival to California in San Francisco, where the canoe and crew were greeted by members of the Oholne tribe, from whom the crew asked permission to enter the traditional lands. Dignitaries from Governor Brown’s office and the city of San Francisco were on hand as well.

In recent weeks, Hikianalia has been sailing down-coast with stops in Monterey, Ventura and Channel Islands Harbor. On Sunday, Oct. 14, conditions permitting, Hikianalia will sail to Santa Cruz Island to meet with Chumash people there. The goal of these voyages is a continuation of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s “Malama Honua campaign to inspire action toward an environmentally and culturally thriving world” (from the PVS). “Malama Honua” means to care for our island earth, and Hikianalia’s sister ship, Hokulea, circumnavigated the globe, returning to Hawaii in 2016 after spreading their message of environmental and cultural stewardship throughout the Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, the eastern U.S., Panama, Galapagos, Rapa Nui, Tahiti and home again to Oahu.

Hokulea—a replica of traditional voyaging canoes as described in oral histories throughout the Pacific and in petroglyphs—was built in the early 1970s, and first sailed to Tahiti and back again to prove, unequivocally, that early Polynesians intentionally explored the vast expanse of the Pacific, populating all of the inhabitable islands across the largest body of water on earth. Linguistic and physical evidence, including DNA analysis, has laid to rest previous theories that island peoples were accidental voyagers who merely drifted to new islands, or were perhaps blown off course in local fishing expeditions. Indeed, genetic tests of Maori people in Aotearoa New Zealand show that their first on-island population was approximately 600 people.

At some point before European contact, long-distance voyaging had faded as a practice from Polynesian cultures, but star maps and the “sea-lanes” of navigation across the ocean remained in oral tradition and common practice for fishing communities in places like Tahiti and the Caroline Islands. Captain Cook brought a Tahitian man aboard Endeavour to help navigate the farthest reaches of the Pacific. The man’s name was Tupaia, and the linguistic similarities across Polynesia allowed him to serve as an interpreter for the English all the way down to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Another key figure in the nearly lost art of Pacific Voyaging is Mau Piailug,

who was from Satawal, in the Caroline Islands. In the 1970s he agreed to teach a number of Hawaiians the technique of celestial navigation, as used by his Surf Contest people for centuries. Hikianalia was built as a sister ship/ escort to Hokulea in 2007. At 72’ length over all, with a beam of 23’, Hikianalia is larger than Hokulea, which is approximately 60’. Solar panels arrayed over the stern charge photovoltaic cells that power electric motors to get through calms or enter/exit harbor areas, but the main propulsion comes from two triangular sails and a jib sail, which move the double-hulled canoe at approximately 8-to-10 knots. Hikianalia is steered by a single steering oar, lashed to the stern, called a hoi uli.

A group of wa’a visited the West Coast from numerous Pacific Island nations in 2011, but there is strong evidence that Santa Barbara may have been visited by Pacific Voyagers as early as the first millennium, around the year 600. Scholars Terry L. Jones and Kathryn A. Klar, in a paper for the Society for American Archaeology in 2005, point to the “adoption of two Polynesian maritime technologies (sewn-plank boats and composite bone fishhooks) by the Chumash and Gabrielino of Southern California during the first millennium A.D.” as evidence of cross-cultural contact.

Jones and Klar add: “Evidence for this contact includes linguistic analysis showing that Chumashan and Gabrielino words for sewn-plank canoe are not lexically consistent within their own languages, but instead appear to be of Polynesian origin. Southern California is the only place in Native North America where sewn-plank boat technology was present, yet this technique was common throughout Polynesia and it seems likely, in light of the linguistics, that the Chumash and Gabrielino learned the technique from Polynesian seafarers.”
