Senior programs get funding opportunities

Local senior-serving nonprofits can apply for grants to the new Senior Programs Committee Advised Fund for seniors through the Santa Barbara Foundations. The one-time grant availability of up to $50,000 comes on the heels of Senior Programs of Santa Barbara closing and shifting to the CAF and operating under SBF. Senior Programs had served seniors since 1974 through Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Real Help and the Senior Expo of Santa Barbara. The one-time kickoff grants are through the Helen Paul Memorial Grant and are available during 2016 for new or expanded programs connecting seniors to civic, volunteer or social engagement opportunities.

Pantoja lauded for service

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District Engineer Raul Pantoja received the district’s 2015 Firefighter of the Year Award at the March 15 board of directors meeting. Pantoja grew up in Carpinteria, graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1984 and has worked in the district for 28 years. His dedication to the job made him a standout for the honor. He worked an average of 85 hours a week in 2015 and volunteered for three strike teams, assignments that took him far from home. He was nominated by fellow firefighters, one of whom wrote, “As some of you may know, spending half your life at work means spending half of your life away from those closest to you. And I can assure you he didn’t do it on his behalf, but on behalf of serving the district and caring for his family.

State Beach gets dune restoration funds

County to lay hot asphalt

Santa Barbara County roads will get treated with the 2015/16 South County Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay project beginning on March 23. The $915,814 project will include 5.1 miles of deteriorated road surface throughout Santa Barbara County including sections of Via Real between Lambert Road and Lillie Avenue near Summerland. The project will be completed by CalPortland Construction and will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. County Public Works Department will inspect and administer the project, which will bridge cracks and fill ruts in the existing pavement in addition to placing a new asphalt concrete overlay, as part of the annual Pavement Preservation Program. Hazardous Waste Day caters to spring cleaners

The California Natural Resources Agency has announced awarding grant funds of $203,862 to the California State Parks system for the Carpinteria State Beach Dune Restoration Project. The project is one of 21 Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation projects being funded with $8.2 million statewide. Funding for the grants comes from fuel taxes distributed to the Natural Resources Agency by Caltrans.

At Carpinteria State Beach, the funding will be used to remove invasive species and replace them with native vegetation. The project also includes improvement to public access and education by developing an accessible beach boardwalk with interpretive elements. “I am pleased to see Carpinteria State Beach receive vital EEM funds to assist with restoring the dunes at this treasured spot,” stated Assemblymember Das Williams in a press release. “The ‘World’s Safest Beach’ is a popular family destination, and it deserves the finest environmental stewardship.”

Carpinteria residents can prepare to get rid of household hazardous good and waste at the annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Residents can dispose of old furniture, scrap lumber and metal, yard waste and electronic waste. Drought worsens, drives up water rates

The worst drought on record hasn’t been cheap for water districts around the state, and another dry winter means another proposed rate hike for most Carpinteria Valley Water District customers. Nearly $2 million in drought-related expenses are projected for the district’s 2016/2017 budget, which could force up the bills of low water users by $8.13 per month.

Despite the dire shortage of rainfall in the area over the last five winters, CVWD has escaped the worst of the drought’s blows thanks to its robust groundwater supplies. In 2010, 68 percent of the district’s water came from Lake Cachuma and 19 percent from groundwater. By 2015, those numbers had reversed. A total of 11 percent came from Cachuma, and 71 percent from groundwater.

“We believe we’re pretty solid,” said CVWD engineer Bob McDonald, who is expected to become the district’s general manager when Charles Hamilton retires this summer. “But that doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in developing droughtproof supplies like desal and recycled (water). We’re looking into those.”

Over $400,000 of the proposed 2016/2017 budget is dedicated to shoring up the district’s groundwater supply.

Two wells are slated for rehabilitation and funds will be set aside toward a sentry well, which provides early detection of saltwater intrusion, a growing risk as the groundwater basin is reduced to lower levels.

Projections of a wet El Niño year fell far short of the hype, and lingering hopes of a “March Miracle” like the one that helped end the drought in the late 1980s have evaporated. Carpinteria has received 9.81 inches since the water year started on Sept. 1, just 60 percent of normal for the end of March.

“The good news is that El Niño did bring some rain at the very north part of the state,” reported McDonald.

Above average rainfall in Northern California has restored the levels of key reservoirs and will result in greater access to State Water for the upcoming year. Carpinteria should be allowed to purchase about 1,100 acre feet if necessary.

ensure state compliance, CVWD recently completed a Cost of Service Model and Rate Study recommending implementation of a two-tiered rate structure rather than the three-tiered structure put in effect years ago to encourage conservation by charging more per unit of water for higher categories of use.

Proposed rates would decrease high water users bills by $7.77 per month.

Multifamily residential would see a hike of $6.03 per month, and high ag water users would spend $43.67 more monthly.

The CVWD board of directors was presented the rate proposal at its March 23 meeting. District staff noted that if drought expenses were removed, rates would be lower than they are currently.

The drought is anticipated to add $1.4 in operating expenses, the highest of which are purchased water on the spot market and state water, electricity for pumping wells, movement of the Lake Cachuma barge, and water conservation rebates and public awareness promotion.

Lake Cachuma’s barge—which allows pumping to continue despite the lake’s 14.9 percent capacity—will likely need to be moved to a deeper point this summer. CVWD would have to shoulder a $223,000 portion of that cost.

Helping to offset drought costs, the district is refunding bonds and reducing debt service by 4 percent next year.

New bonds will lower interest charges without adding to the life of the debt, and $1 million in savings are projected through 2033.

The district is preparing to send rate and budget notices to all its customers.

On June 8, the board will vote on the proposed budget.

Two stone pines face chopping block

Two 60-year-old Italian stone pines on 7 Street will be cut down soon to avoid damages and injuries. The Carpinteria City Council voted on March 28 for the removal of the massive, old trees at 4823 and 4791 7th Street.

“I don’t think any of us up here enjoy when a tree gets cut down,” said Mayor Gregg Carty, adding that the recommendation of the city’s Tree Advisory Board and a consulting arborist to take down the trees could not be ignored.

The pines were planted by the Lions Club around 1955 as a community service project. Though they are well-loved by many and provide an expansive canopy, they interfere with power lines and cause root damage to public streets and sidewalks. In recent years, limb failure and splitting trunks have grown more common. Five trees have been removed from 7th Street in the last five years.

Currently, Carpinteria has 28 stone pines within city limits, many along 7th Street. The two trees slated for removal were assessed as presenting a moderate to high risk of damage—one for its canopy’s lack of balance as a result of utility company trimming, and another because its double trunk could split. Nine others throughout the city have been identified as moderate to high risk but were not recommended for removal. th

An update on the city’s Housing Element, which must be reported annually to the state, indicates that five residential building permits were approved in 2015, which is typical for a year without a major housing project.

A total of 163 units, however, were allocated to Carpinteria for permitting between 2015 and 2023. The city must encourage housing opportunities across

various income levels and include enough property zoned for residential development to allow its housing allocation to be met.

Carpinteria’s 2015 to 2023 allocations, as determined by the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, include 39 units of very low income housing, 26 units of low income housing, 34 moderate and 64 above moderate.

The following projects are expected to be permitted soon: four condominiums on 4th Street, Habitat for Humanity’s three low and very low income condominiums on Sawyer Avenue, two apartments in M3’s mixed use project on Carpinteria Avenue, a second unit on Star Pine Road and four Sanctuary Beach Condominiums on Carpinteria Avenue.

Between 2007 and 2015, 289 new housing units were added in Carpinteria. In that period, major projects were Lavender Court, Lagunitas, the Dahlia Court addition and Casas de las Flores.

Council bites

• Steve Goggia is the city’s new community development director, City Manager Dave Durflinger announced. Goggia, a senior planner with the city for the last 11 years, has been acting director of the department since Jackie Campbell’s retirement last fall. “Carpinteria really is a great place to settle in as a community development director,” Goggia said. “I have a good staff and I had great training from (Campbell).”

• The city council designated April as Carpinteria Beautiful month, a tradition since 1992. The month was also recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

• Marisol Alarcon of Alarcon Legal was appointed to the Carpinteria First Committee. Council members said it was a great choice as Alarcon had recently demonstrated her community mindedness as an organizer of the Child Safety Event that took place earlier this month.

restricts vacation rentals to the beach neighborhood, and reconsider the original version supported by the commission, which additionally maintains pockets of downtown zoning to preserve most existing vacation rentals.

“I think the benefits of this ordinance, as currently presented, are outweighed by the negative impacts of it,” said Commissioner John Callender, who likened the current proposal to using a sledgehammer to drive in a nail. local problems associated with vacation rentals mirror those of cities around the nation: loss of long-term housing stock and deleterious effects on singlefamily neighborhoods. A moratorium on new short-term rentals was put in effect last fall and can be extended through october of 2017. After that the city’s existing code, which allows short-term rentals in most areas outside of single-family residential, would continue unless an agreement could be reached.

Regardless of Planning Commission input, the real challenge is finding what the City Council can stomach when it comes to vacation rentals. Two of its five members, Brad Stein and Wade Nomura, have recused themselves due to potential conflicts of interest from their wives’ professional involvement in real

estate. A three-vote majority is necessary to pass an ordinance, which forces unanimity among the remaining three councilmembers.

When the issue went to the council last month, it failed to achieve that 3-0 vote.

Councilmember Al Clark’s insistence that vacation rentals be restricted to the beach neighborhood resulted in the ordinance circling back to the Planning Commission for another stab at it.

At the March 21 meeting, Callender lamented the predicament. “(The council) can’t have one dissenting vote. so we can’t have one person making a mistake, and i think Councilmember Clark is making a mistake with his vote on this. i think it’s an honest mistake. i don’t think it’s motivated by selfishness. I think it’s motivated by a sincere commitment to the issue of low income and affordable housing and preservation of things about our community that we all value. i just think it’s unfortunate that he can’t be outvoted.”

Callender argued for a less restrictive ordinance due to the large number of nonconforming units it creates, the potential impacts on tourism to the economy and the enforcement burden to the city. he noted that Councilmember Clark’s ques-

tion at the February meeting of who the town belonged to, tourists or residents, represented an “us versus them” mentality that should be avoided. he said that while he understood the city’s need to retain workforce housing, the ordinance as written was unlikely to have a significant positive effect on the number of long-term rentals available.

Commission Chair John Moyer said he fully supported Callender’s statements, adding that a reasonable ordinance was being “held hostage” by one member of the council.

Commissioner David Allen cast the lone dissenting vote. he said he supports tourism but would like to see additional hotel offerings, not more vacation rentals. “Yes, we do want to welcome those people,” he said, “but not at the expense of providing adequate housing to our residents. And that has been a real issue.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist to speak at Friends event

to do to avoid tipping into catastrophic, irreversible climate change. It’s nothing short of slowly weaning ourselves off fossil fuels by the year 2070. These scientists know where we need to go. But how can we get there? That’s another matter. No one really knows. It’s an extraordinary challenge, and one that will face stiff headwinds as we add another 2 or 3 billion more people to the planet and need to double food production to feed all of us.

Kenneth R. Weiss, Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist, writes on topics at the intersection of science, environment and public health. At the April 7 Friends of the Library event, Weiss will present a slide show on his current work on climate change on a low-lying Equatorial Pacific atoll.

Much of Weiss’ reporting overseas has been financed by grants from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and the Earth Journalism Network. He covered the United Nations climate negotiations in Paris last year for Nature magazine.

His recent work has focused on human dimensions of climate change, traveling to some of the most vulnerable countries such as Bangladesh and the island nation of Kiribati in the Equatorial Pacific.

Before becoming a magazine writer, Weiss spent more than two decades as a reporter and editor at the Los Angeles Times. His newspaper work included two major series: Beyond 7 Billion, on the causes and consequences of human population growth, and Altered Oceans, which showed how humans are so industrious they have managed to change all of the world’s oceans. Weiss won his Pulitzer in 2007 and also has won the George Polk Award, the Grantham Prize, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Scripps Howard Foundation’s National Journalism Award and many others. He holds a bachelor’s degree in folklore from U.C. Berkeley and lives in Carpinteria.

6. What is your advice for Carpinterians looking to do their part when it comes to climate change?

That’s a tough question. Ultimately, it’s going to take massive, collective change. That means governments will have to step in with rules and incentives to help us move way from carbon-intensive lifestyle. So the vote is probably the most important lever for anyone concerned about this. I’m not big on issuing personal advice. But there are some things my wife and I try to minimize our carbon footprint: We have solar panels that cover all our electric usage. We compost all our food waste so it doesn’t end up buried in the landfill creating methane, a potent greenhouse gas. We try to avoid turning on the furnace, which is pretty easy, except in December, given our nearperfect weather. I also try to help build in local resilience to a changing climate by avoiding rat poison and pesticides, as well as planting pollinating plants to feed the bees, so our natural systems are healthier and stronger and more likely to weather change. Scientists talk about the death of our environment by a thousand cuts. Every little bit we each do can help lessen our cumulative impacts.

1. Climate change is such a massive topic to take on as a journalist.

Your work homes in on the effects of climate change on the island nation of Kiribati. How does that seemingly narrow approach help to illuminate readers on a global scale?

I spent years of writing about how climate change will alter nature. Lately, I’ve been more focused on its impact on people. Kiribati, a collection of lowlying atolls in the Equatorial Pacific, has become the poster child for nations threatened by rising seas with images of frequent village flooding. I wanted to check it out.

2. Your writing serves as a bridge between scientists and the lay reader.

What are some of the challenges you come across in that role?

It’s often tricky to explain complex science in a way that’s accessible and meaningful to a typical reader. It’s important to simplify, but not make it stupid or just plain wrong. Climate science has an added challenge. It’s become highly politicized.

3. You won a Pulitzer for your work on how humans have impacted oceans, and now your focus is climate change.

Can you trace your interest in the environment to a personal experience or influence?

Yes, absolutely. I grew up fishing with my dad in Newport Beach, and surfing and later scuba diving—I’ve had a lifelong love affair with the ocean.

About 15 years ago, I coaxed the editors at the Los Angeles Times—where I used to work—to let me cover the oceans full time. I wanted to learn as much as I could and so I started going to scientific conferences. What I learned horrified me. I suddenly realized how overfishing and pollution were altering the composition and chemistry of the seas.

A couple of things: One is how nature is getting hammered. I find it heartbreaking to watch seabirds return to their traditional nests, but they cannot find enough fish to feed their starving chicks. The reason? The fish have moved with changing ocean temperatures. The second is the impact on poor people in poor countries. These folks have contributed the least to climate change, but they’re the most often in harm’s way because they live in vulnerable places and rely on nature to feed their families.

5. Is there consensus among experts as to what must be done on the large scale to slow or put a stop to the planet’s warming trend?

Yes, to a surprising degree. When I was in Paris in December, covering the Climate talks for Nature magazine,

Halos Pitchforks Bicycle diaries

A man who resides on 3rd Street saw a lot of action between March 19 and 21 due to a spike in bicycle thievery in the beach neighborhood. He reported that on March 19 his old reliable beach cruiser, which he often left unlocked at the entrance to 2nd Beach, was missing when he returned from his beach visit.

Then the plot thickened on March 21.

The man’s mother had her cruiser swiped from outside the 3 rd Street home and reported it to police. Later that evening, the son was strolling the neighborhood and spotted a young woman, estimated to be in her early 20s, standing next to the propped up bicycle at the corner of Elm Street and Sandyland Road. When informed that the bike was stolen, she was quick to hand it over. A young man then approached and offered the excuse that he had been given the bicycle by a friend just an hour earlier. When officers were informed that the bike had been recovered, they went to the area where it was found but had no luck tracking down the man and woman who had possessed the stolen property.

Officers then engaged in a separate chapter of bicycle theft policing the following day. While patrolling the train station, an officer spotted a 21-year-old man circling the lot on a beach cruiser. The officer noted that the man was a known meth user, so he struck up a conversation.

Santa Barbara. He could provide no more details about the transaction. The officer came to realize that the cruiser didn’t fit the description of the bike stolen at 2nd Beach, so he changed the subject to meth.

Asked if he currently had any meth, the man said no. The officer then asked if he could give him a quick pat down. The man dropped his shoulders, looked to the ground and pulled a meth pipe out of his chest pocket. He said he had used it the other day. The officer arrested him for the meth pipe.

Working hard to keep Carpinteria beautiful CVn

mission possible barbara dunlap A lot of us take Carpinteria’s beauty for granted. Without a second thought, we enjoy lovely downtown murals, colorful bus benches, freshly planted trees and clean streets.

But in reality, none of these would exist without the hard work of Carpinteria Beautiful volunteers. These dedicated citizens do everything from picking up litter to installing commemorative plaques that help fund new trees. And that’s just the beginning: The volunteers also advocate for causes such as Carp’s smoke-free policy and its reusable bag program.

Foster Markolf has donated time and effort to Carpinteria Beautiful for about 14 years, and he has participated in many of the group’s projects. Here’s a sampling of his activities: Q: What’s the most hands-on job you do for CB? A: I’ve been an Adopt-A-Spot trash picker-upper in the beach area of town for about 10 or 11 years.

Q: Have you helped out with the murals in town?

A: For the past eight years I’ve chaired

our Murals Committee. We’ve sponsored two large murals: Whitney Brooks Abbott’s “Rincon From the Bluffs” mural on Linden and John Wullbrandt’s “World’s Safest Beach” mural on Wullbrandt Way. Q: What else do you do for CB? A: I’ve selected homes and gardens to receive CB’s “Looking Good Award,” and in the past I wrote stories about award winners for CVN. I headed up our effort to get the city council to make this a smoke-free city, and I’ve served as president and vice president of the group.

(He is currently CB’S co-president.)

Q: What activities have made you proudest?

A: Two things: Working to pass the Second Hand Smoke Control Ordinance— we were only the sixth city in California to adopt such an all-encompassing ordinance. I’m also proud of the very popular World’s Safest Beach mural, which took about six years to finally get done.

Q: How much time do you devote to CB? A: For special projects, I spend several hours a week—up to 10, 20 or more.

Normally, though, it’s just a few hours each week.

Q: What motivates you to work so hard for this cause?

A: I love being involved with Carpinteria Beautiful because I truly love our precious small-town beach community.

It’s a pleasure to contribute in some small measure to fulfilling our mission of keeping Carp “Clean, Green and Beautiful.”

Foster Markolf has rolled up his sleeves to keep Carpinteria clean, green and beautiful for the last 14 years.

Help Wanted

April is Carpinteria Beautiful Month, which culminates in CB’s annual Home & Garden Tour. The tour is always the last Saturday in April, which falls on April 30 this year.

It’s also the perfect time to join CB as a volunteer. Donna Jordan, who serves as co-president with Foster Markolf, says the group welcomes people to help out with all its activities.

Projects range from filling doggie bag dispensers to packing poppy seeds for distribution to the community. Other jobs include putting up Christmas trees for schoolchildren to decorate and acting as docents at the home and garden tour.

Carpinteria Beautiful volunteers have enhanced this city ever since the group was founded in 1992 by Jordan and Bill “Doc” Carty.

“Our volunteers not only help keep Carpinteria cleaner and looking more beautiful, but they also help enhance community pride,” Jordan says. “Their efforts make a quality-of-life difference.”

Spring has sprung CVN

Spring has come and with it some of the most beautiful days in recent memory, thanks in part to a bit of March rain.

Speaking of rain, it is unfortunate that El Niño never arrived in our neck of the woods. As of the middle of March, Lake Cachuma reported only 14 percent capacity. Not great news.

However, there is some good news.

Currently, I am in Northern California and am pleased to report that there is lots of rain and snow. Be prepared for a little “water envy” because just a few hours to

the north it is beautiful, green and water is everywhere. The two most important reservoirs in the state, Lakes Oroville and Shasta are filling at a rapid rate. Shasta is reporting 85 percent capacity, Oroville 77 percent and the snowmelt is still to come. The word up here is that both of these vital water sources will reach 100 percent of capacity before summer. This is fabulous news for farmers and ranchers as well as migrating birds.

Spring gardening

Spring is gardening time! Here are some ideas to help get you started on your spring tasks.

1. Mulch: Spread mulch continuously and deeply. By deeply I mean 6 inches deep. Not, of course on top of your plants or up around the trunks of trees, but everywhere in between. It doesn’t matter what you use, chippings from tree companies, the free stuff from Marborg or anything at All Around Landscape Supply. Just use it liberally.

2. Plant a cutting garden from seed: I just scattered a bunch of annual flower seeds in a sunny spot by the house. I like to allow annuals to go to seed so that I have flowers popping up all over the place. Now, I happen to like a bit of an untidy garden, so that approach may not be for you. Instead, plant annual flowers in raised beds so you will have a continuous supply of cutting flowers this summer.

3. Prepare and plant raised beds: If you haven’t already done so, refresh your raised beds by digging out old roots and then adding fresh compost.

Be a bit conservative in your addition of organic material to veggie beds. If your mix is too rich, your plants won’t thrive.

Seems counter intuitive, but if your soil mixture is too rich plants don’t have to grow! April is the time to start planting all your summer herbs and veggies. In Carpinteria you can continue to plant greens like chard and kale especially if you have a shady spot.

4. Feed flowering perennials: Roses and all flowering perennials benefit from feeding in the spring. Use a good, organic mix and then cover with mulch.

5. Repot or divide orchids and feed: The best time to repot and/or divide orchids is right after they finish blooming.

Orchids like to be crowded so divide only if they are pushing their pot to the edge.

If you prefer to create a larger specimen instead of dividing, then move to the next size pot. Be sure to replenish with new orchid bark to ensure good drainage.

Once they stop blooming begin feeding them once a month to encourage new green growth.

Jessica was on her way to a wedding in the Santa Ynez Valley when she was involved in a near-fatal car accident. She was immediately helicoptered to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Level II Trauma Center. From there, the advanced neurosurgery team quickly treated her diffuse brain contusion and blood clot.

Arts Center hosts poetry competition

Carpinteria-inspired verses designed to move minds and sway spirits can be submitted to the Carpinteria Arts Center-sponsored competition for the Glenna Luschei Poetry Award, an event in honor of National Poetry Month. The Arts Center seeks unpublished, original poems that are no longer than one page in 12-point font. The entry should be submitted in the body of an email and an attachment to carpinteriapoetrycontest@gmail.com. Entries should include name and age category, which are 5 to 12, 13 to 18, and 19 and older. Multiple entries are acceptable.

Decisions by judges Maureen Foley, James Claffey and Mark Welborn are final.

Prizes are $50 and poem published on 100 bookmarks for the 5 to 12 category, $100 and 20 published broadsides for the 13 to 18 category and $300 and special small book publication of 20 for the adult competition. “This award seeks to recognize excellent verse originating from or regarding Carpinteria. No entry fee. All writers welcome,” commented contest organizers.

There will also be youth workshops held between April 1 and 15 in elementary classrooms. Winning poets will be invited to read with the judges in a celebration of National Poetry Month at the Carpinteria Arts Center on April 29 at 6 p.m. The submission deadline is April 15.

Ojai Pottery and Clay School offers spring classes

Aspiring potters can build their skills by attending school to play with clay this spring. Ojai Pottery and Clay School is offering spring classes for both throwers and hand builders. Classes are held seven times per week at the school, 212 Fox Street in Ojai. The best class for newcomers is from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays. Dog trainer sets up shop in Carpinteria

Joan Hunter Mayer, a certified dog trainer and owner of The Inquisitive Canine, has established a partnership for referrals with the Carpinteria Veterinary Office. Mayer said the agreement with the vet will be important for new dog owners or those experiencing behavioral issues with their canines. “New dog owners are like new parents,” she said. “They’re like, ‘Oh my God. What do I do?’” She said starting the pups young is the best plan. Mayer has been in the business for 11 years and teaches using a force-free method that is more than just positive re-enforcement. She said her goal is to motivate both owner and dog to participate in the training, which is designed to develop canine manners and life skills.

CHS grads launch SB skate shop

Santa Barbara recently gained a skate shop within a stone’s throw of its beach side skatepark thanks to Carpinteria High School grads Spencer Navarro and Naren Porter-Kasbati. Last week they opened the Lighthouse Skateshop at 16B Helena Ave., at the corner of Cabrillo Boulevard in the Funk Zone. Both owners have skate shop experience, Navarro at Powell Peralta and Porter-Kasbati at Church of Skatin’, and when Church of Skatin’ closed early this year, they saw an opening. They offer well-known brand names in boards and apparel like Independent, Real, Crooked and AntiHero, and bring all the tools and expertise necessary to do repairs. Navarro said the shop has a mind toward building and bonding the skate community and will support local bands with local gatherings in the alley nearby.

Summerland School students set out traps but did not catch the elusive leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day.

Leprechauns escape Summerland students

Reliable sources reported that mischievous leprechauns visited Summerland School on the eve of St. patrick’s day again and somehow made it out of each and every kindergarten and first-grade students’ traps. Although they visit every year, the green fairies always find ways to stay clear of the creative devices installed by the young students to nab them in the act. the annual tradition involves the youngest students creating traps with their families to lure and catch the small green creatures with gold, green and other tempting objects. each year the fairies create quite a mess sprinkling gold glitter and gold coins while rearranging the classroom and leaving written messages for the students. The whole school, including parents, visits the K/1 classroom the morning of St. Patrick’s Day in search of trapped leprechauns, creating much excitement and wonder, according to Principal Holly Minear.

Carpinteria Family School students have been taking their cues and rehearsing lines and songs all spring for their upcoming production of Disney’s “The lion King Jr.” on April 29 and 30 at Carpinteria Middle School, 5351 Carpinteria Ave. The all-school production involves every student and many parents making costumes, props and sets for the show. “(Students) have been through tons of practices singing and dancing. They have had lots and lots of fun,” according to student reporter Jeremy Wayne Haines. Curtain times are on Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m.

Children’s Project to celebrate early education

To celebrate the national Association for the education of young Children’s Week of the young Child April 10 through 16, Carpinteria Children’s Project will host a Day of Play on Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Aliso Preschool, 4545 Carpinteria Avenue. Fun activities centered around literacy in the outdoors for children are planned at this free public event. “early childhood education is vital to our community.

Children need a strong early learning foundation to succeed in school, and go on to succeed in life,” stated a release from the Children’s Project.

Cate baseball beats Valley Christian Cate 14, V.C. 4

By the end of four innings, the Cate School baseball team had built a 10-1 lead over visiting Valley Christian Academy, en route to a 14-4 non-league win on March 25. Even though the offense accumulated 14 runs, Ram coach Ben Soto considered the defense the key to victory.

“We were ready to go, but what set the tone was our defense,” said Soto. “When they got three hits right off the bat (first inning), and had the bases loaded, we got a sacrifice fly for one out, and Joel (Revo) comes up throwing and nails the guy trying to score,” added Soto. The senior outfielder’s assist helped keep the Lions off the scoreboard, and Cate’s bats went to work from there.

Revo also led the charge on offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, including an inside-the-park homerun. Fellow senior Dean Smith chipped in with two hits on the day, including a triple that knocked in two runs. A pair of Ram juniors, Dylan Ell and Bryce Huerta, also contributed with Ell adding two hits and Huerta batting 3-for-4.

The Cate coaching staff was also pleased with the pitching on the afternoon. “Jack Deardorff, our freshman pitcher, he was outstanding,” said Ram assistant coach Matt Drew, who leads the pitching staff. “He struggled a little bit in the beginning, location was a little off, but young kid, first start, once he settled down and got that big (first inning) double play, he found the zone and just sunk it in.” Deardorff ended up giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Valley Christian Academy attempted a comeback in the fifth. Stringing together three straight hits and taking

advantage of a high throw on a double steal attempt, the Lions narrowed the margin to 10-4 going into the bottom half of the inning. “The first five hitters on that team hit the ball pretty well,” said Soto. However, the Rams quickly responded in their turn at bat with three more runs to extend the lead back to nine to start the sixth.

Cate collected 16 hits for the game.

Deardorff also helped his own cause on the offensive end, reaching base all five times, including two hits. The win improves the team’s record to 2-1 in the young season. The Rams are back at home March 31, competing in another non-league game against Pacifica Christian. First pitch is at 3:45 p.m.

March 22 – The Cate School boys lacrosse team snapped its two-game losing streak with a convincing win over Laguna Blanca, 17-3. Cate came out strong and scored just over a minute into the game when senior Keller Mochel found fellow senior Christian Burke on the crease for an easy finish. Burke and junior Pierce Lundt controlled the draws, while senior midfielders Peter Marcus and Isaiah Washington each picked up eight ground balls. Senior Cole Brennan led all scorers with six goals and seven assists. Junior Matt Killea scored his first varsity goal.

Boys volleyball

March 22 – The Cate School boys volleyball team shook off the dust after spring break with a three-game match victory over Santa Clara. The Rams’ Oliver Welch and Carson Williams created point scoring opportunities with tough serves. Welch also led Cate with 12 kills, Morgan Pierce followed with eight and freshman JoJo Broussard was introduced to the lineup to capture one kill. “The Rams boys volleyball seemed to have a bit of trouble focusing on their serve after spring break,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. “The final set showed the true blue and white colors of the Cate team where the Rams were in system, making the game look easy to pull out a decisive 25-14 victory,” added Novak.

March 24 - The Cate School boys volleyball team improved its record to 3-1 with a 3-0 sweep over Foothill Technology. The Rams’ Morgan Pierce had 20 kills and 3 blocks. Teammate Oliver Welch followed with 10 kills and solid, accurate serves which lead to many plays for the Rams. “During practice, Patrick Prestidge and Carson Williams have been working hard at contributing,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. Final scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21.

Girls lacrosse

March 23 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team played their first game back from break against Santa Barbara, winning by a score of 15-1. The Rams Brie Walker caught a clean draw control and ran it down to score within the first 34 seconds of the game.

Teammate Jess Liou had an awesome game, with 12 saves, great clears and amazing ball control, according to her coach. Walker ended the game with three goals, four draw controls and a 100 percent shooting percentage. Anna Graves and Katherine Grossman ended the game with four goals each.

March 28 – Carpinteria High School baseball opened play in the Santa Paula Cardinal Classic at home against Foothill Tech and came away with a 3-2 win. Sal Delgado was the pitcher of record (3-1) as he tossed a complete game, scattering three hits, walking three and striking out 15 for the Warriors. Delgado was also the only Warrior with multiple hits, and he picked up an RBi to help his own cause. “Delgado and catcher Toby Spach were tough to beat,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. “They did a great job keeping the hitters off balance, and they were very heady and patient in key situations,” added Cooney. in game two of the Classic, once again played at Calderwood Field, the warriors beat Pacifica 3-2 for a nine-inning victory. The starting pitcher was junior right-hander, David Martinez, who had performed CPR on his grandfather the night before, left the hospital to join the team and then tossed eight very competitive innings. The eventual winning pitcher was Diego Contreras as he held the Titans scoreless in the ninth to keep the game tied and set the stage for a walk-off win for Carpinteria. Coco Carrillo was the lone multiple-hit player in the game as he picked up two singles. “We want to support our guy (David Martinez) in every way that we can,” said Cooney of his pitcher, who returned to the hospital immediately following the contest.

Softball

March 23 – The Carpinteria High School softball team took on Hueneme in a nonleague game, winning by a score of 11-1. Amanda Blair pitched a two-hit ball game with 11 strikeouts. Sierra Diaz had a day at the plate with two hits and three RBi. Blair had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the fifth, but a single and triple spoiled it. she also had two hits, which resulted in three RBi and two runs scored.

March 26 - The Carpinteria High School softball team dropped a doubleheader at Nipomo, losing the first game by a score of 3-2, and falling short in the second game, 10-8. Trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning of the first game, the warriors scored a run when Diaz walked and scored on a double by Amanda Blair. in the seventh inning, Carpinteria scored another run on a McKenzie Kephart single which was followed by a single by Natalia Cabrera, putting runners at first and third. Mikayla Blair then singled, scoring Kephart. Two batters later Raquel Cordero was hit by a pitch, thus loading the bases; but the Warriors could not get the hit needed to tie the game, leaving the bases loaded. in the second game, Carpinteria scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a grand slam over the right-centerfield fence by Mikayla Blair. in the fourth inning, the Warriors scored three runs, starting with consecutive walks to Kephart and Arianna Macias. Then, Diaz got the big hit, a triple to score Macias. in the sixth inning, Carpinteria scored a run on Cordero’s deep fly ball, scoring Mikayla Blair.

March 24 - The Cate School girls lacrosse team fell to Newbury Park in a tight one by a score of 18-15. Brie Walker, Sam Hill and Katherine Grossman started the game each with a draw control and a goal for the Rams. Brie Walker ended the game with eight goals and two assists. “Mari Espinoza did an incredible job, stepping in as goalie in her first varsity game with five awesome saves,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. The freshmen of the team, Maddie Erickson and Daphne McKeefry, also had one goal each.

Track and Field

March 24 – The Carpinteria High school track and field team went against Foothill Tech in its Tri-Valley League opener with the boys winning 73-63, and the girls losing 76-60. Chance Wright won three events to lead the Warriors, winning both hurdle races and setting a personal record in the pole vault. Ryan Springer and Nico Garcia were double winners as well, with Springer winning the triple and high jumps, and finishing second in the long jump. Garcia won the shot put with his own personal record, and also captured first in the discus. Annalisa De Alba led the girls with personal record performances in both the shot put and discus, and Gaby Fantone also was a double winner in the hurdle races.

March 23 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team took the second game of a two game set against Villanova, securing a 4-2 non-league win. Senior left hander Diego Contreras picked up the win (1-0) tossing five innings, surrendering a single earned run on four hits, three walks and a strikeout. Freshman lefty Chase Mayer notched the save as he held the wildcats hitless in the final two frames, striking out four. On offense, the leader was Sal Delgado who ended up a homer shy of the cycle as he picked up the eventual winning RBi when he doubled in Coco Carrillo in the three-run warrior first. Tony Vega knocked in the fourth Warrior run in the fourth inning when he singled in Delgado who had reached on a leadoff triple.

March 26 – The Carpinteria High school track and field team participated in the Easter Relays at Santa Barbara City College. Annalisa DeAlba was the only medalist for the Warriors, throwing a personal record of 112 feet, one inch in the discus to place fourth. The mark moves her past De Alba’s cheerleading coach, Julie Rubio-shamblin, on the Warriors’ all-time list. Moises Perez also had a personal record of 27 seconds running the third leg of the Four x 200 Relay. Julio Sanchez also had a personal best, running the 200-meter leg in 24.8 seconds during the Sprint Medley.

Local arborist places in Tree Climbing Championship

Jacob Claassen proved to be the third best tree climber in the West on March 20.

The Carpinteria arborist and owner of Nimble Tree Care Inc. competed in the Western Chapter International Society of Arboriculture Tree Climbing Championship in Santa Barbara and took home the bronze medal after a series of trials tested for speed, agility and safety in the branches.

The 100-plus-foot eucalyptuses of Chase Palm Park served as the course for the annual competition that matches 35 skilled tree climbers against one another for a chance at the international championship. Claassen took the top prize in the western division in 2013 and advanced to the international level in Toronto.

Competitors are scored in a number of events: work climb, throw line, aerial rescue, secured foot lock and belayed speed climb. Claassen, who placed first in the preliminaries on March 19 to qualify for the masters on March 20, said his favorite events are the work climb, which most closely tests a climber’s ability to perform tree work, and the speed climb. In the speed climb, Claassen said, the first place finisher climbed the 60 vertical feet in just 24 seconds, while he finished second in 25 or 26 seconds.

members of the playa del sur 4-h lamb team started their projects last week. purchased from Kayla hutcheson of hutcheson Club Lambs, the lambs will be shown at the santa barbara Fair & exposition at the end of April and exhibited and auctioned off at the santa barbara County Fair in santa maria in July. the team plans to add 10 more lambs soon. between now and July, team members will try to fatten up their lambs by 70-80 more pounds.

Teacher takes manatee plunge

Retired Carpinteria Junior High School Spanish teacher Carol Kutzner traveled with former student Susan Kean and CVN on a voyage to swim with the manatees in Crystal River, Fla. The ladies were friendly with the sea cows, and the large animals who migrate freely between sea and fresh water returned the cordial favor.

Kutzner concluded, “They’re such gentle giants.”

Jimmy Justin “J.J.” Ventura

Jaimi (Richardson) and Jimmy Ventura welcomed their new baby boy, Jimmy Justin “J.J.” Ventura, to the world on March 7, 2016 at 12:33 a.m. Born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, the newborn weighed 8 pounds and 6.5 ounces. Jaimi is a long-time Carpinterian, and Jimmy was born and raised in Santa Barbara.

Both their families are delighted to finally meet the handsome bundle of joy, but his big sister, Cali Richardson-Ventura, is the most ecstatic. “Cali is taking being a big sister very seriously and she is the best big sister ever,” reported Jaimi.
