The eye of the storm

For the fifth time in the last four months, many Carpinteria residents have been ordered to evacuate. This time, the National Weather Service anticipates between 5 and 10 inches of rain in the nearby foothills and mountains between Tuesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 22. Forecasters expect significantly more total rainfall than the Jan. 9 Debris Flow, which brought between 3 and 6 inches to the region. Residents in the Extreme and High Risks areas were required to evacuate at noon on March 20. A map of risk areas can be found at ReadySBC.org; information is also available by calling 2-1-1.

According to Rob Lewin, director of the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management, the amount of rain and the intensity is enough to cause flooding even without the impact of the recent fires. “We could experience localized flooding and road closures which are not isolated to the burn areas. The threat of rock falls, mud slides and debris flow is high,” he noted.

The Red Cross opened an evacuation center at Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara on March 20. Anyone evacuated or otherwise affected by the approaching storm is welcome to find relief there.. For assistance evacuating large and small animals, contact Santa Barbara County Animal Services hotline at 681-4332.

Public safety officials hope to keep Highway 101 open for resident evacuations. If Highway 101 needs to be closed, CHP would do so just prior to the arrival of the intense portion of the storm. Bands of rain, timing and intensity will guide this decision.

New homes proposed on church property

The ARB voted on March 15 to advance a Faith Lutheran Church proposal to build six new homes at the corner of Ogan Road and Vallecito Place to the planning commission. Some neighbors took issue with the plan to divide the 2.7-acre property into eight lots to build the new structures. The church and a parsonage home would remain on the lot, and the new homes would range from 2,268 to 2,831 square feet on lots ranging from .16 to .22 acres. The homes would be built where there are currently 79 avocado trees and would be configured with two driveways accessing three homes each. One of the homes would be set aside as an affordable unit.

Neighbors speaking out against the project considered it too large and out of character with the neighborhood. Tom Truax said, “This is way too much. It’s like a planned unit development.” Others thought that it degraded the quaint character of Vallecito Place, obstructed mountain views and posed a street parking issue.

The ARB approved moving the project ahead for planning commission consideration with comments by a 4-0 vote, and commissioner Scott Ellinwood recused himself as the architect for the applicant. Commissioners generally viewed the design favorably and thought the two driveways feeding three homes was appropriate for the setting.

However, the property is prone to flooding, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency requires that six feet of fill must be placed under the new building, which raises the new profile to over 20 feet. Overall, the building footprint would grow by 600 square feet. The ARB commented that there’s potential to lower the height and reduce its overall footprint by eliminating a breezeway.

Members of the public suggested scaling down the building’s four bathrooms, conference room and breezeway. “It’s completely ridiculous. It is an office space for five employees and an occasional meeting,” said Leslie Gascoigne in public comment.

Although a majority of comments at both hearings have centered on the eucalyptus trees, Carpinteria Sanitary District General Manager Craig Murray contended that the sanitary district and its rate payers cannot shoulder the liability the notoriously dangerous trees pose. Although much was made of four bathrooms, two would be dedicated to the conference room, which Murray said would be necessary for the operation of the sanitary district.

Open letter to Cate School headmaster

I am not a cannabis advocate, but I am a strong advocate for local commercial agriculture. It is my opinion that the most important factor to the future of our local quality of life is the preservation of local commercial agriculture. I have known local farmers all my life. In my career as a lawyer, I worked with the most influential and successful local farmers. The farmers, their families and their employees are my friends.

I find your letter to the community about cannabis in last week’s Coastal View News either uninformed, or worse yet, intentionally misleading, which of course would be terribly troubling coming from an educator. I can tell you throughout my life it has always been a mistake when non-farmers try to tell farmers how to manage their business. It is a challenging business, and they know what they are doing better than anyone else.

I live right off Foothill Road, and I do not believe that you can often actually smell cannabis at your campus. Yes, I know once in a while we all smell it, but the county ordinance is intended to require mandatory and effective odor control. I followed the exhaustive ordinance process because it is one of the most significant local land use issues of our lifetimes. That is why I question whether you are either uninformed or intentionally misleading. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on process and had a multitude of public meetings over a significant period of time.

Of course it was not perfect, we are humans, but they went through it, we have a result. You are of course in our great country entitled to have and voice your opinion but please, as an educator, and someone with the resources to communicate with the public, do not be misleading, and appreciate our local farmers.

As long as women are under-represented on our elected bodies, our community does not get the benefit of those with different skills and life experiences.

Of course not every woman is qualified; the same is true for men.

Responding to the letter last week about the CVN Viewpoint “Taking a Seat at the Table: Our Time is Now,” I would like to expand the writer’s narrow definition of non-partisan. Non-partisan means free from party affiliation or designation. With respect to the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, it means that endorsements are made without regard to the candidate’s political party. It means that members of the organization come from all parties or no party and are never asked to declare their preference.

While we do not exclude anyone based on political affiliations, our members must hold the same core values as SBW-

PC does and are outlined in our position papers. Important decisions regarding women have been made by mostly men for so long that you are right when you say other points of view need to be heard.

Having women on the ballot allows the voter a choice of candidates with other perspectives, and that is a good thing.

School safety walkout a proud moment

On March 14, I witnessed the Carpinteria High School students “march for our lives” on Linden and Carpinteria avenues, as well as our middle school students walking out of the classrooms for 17 minutes. Our Carpinteria students took part in the national awareness day for gun control. Our school sites need to be safe and free of violence. I am proud of our students and their freedom of speech to tell our Carpinteria community that we should care about schools and student safety by stopping and controlling gun violence.

I am encouraged by young people taking up a cause and marching for what they believe in. On the other hand, a day later, I am discouraged by the student who stepped off the curb, midblock without looking, prompting me to slam on my car’s brakes. The student was totally unaware due to the earbuds and that distraction. I motioned to the student to remove the earbuds. He did.

I let him know that I could have inadvertently killed him, and that he should pay attention and look both ways before crossing—as though that’s not common knowledge. He nonchalantly said, “I don’t care.” Disturbed by his foolish act and further by his apathy, I called the high school office. Further discouraging, I was told that the school deals with this all day, every day. And there is nothing that they can do. Does this great disparity of youth represent our collective future?

Time for change

Enough. Congress will not, cannot or won’t stand up to the financial pressure of the NRA. The continuing threats of pulling campaign coffers or endorsing an opponent in an upcoming election wins out over the needs, wants or desires of the American people.

We need to go Plan B. Whereas the Department of Defense is charged with military actions abroad, the Department of Homeland Security works in the civilian sphere to protect the United States within, at and outside its borders.

A preventable loss?

The veterinary profession is a noble calling—requiring hard work, dedication, intelligence, wisdom, and long hours—all for the love of animals and their owners. However, of all the professional fields, it also carries the highest rate of suicide. In response to the recent deaths of local veterinarians Dr. Tiffany Margolin and Dr. Amanda Lumsden, I offer my own perspective as a veterinarian.

I met Dr. Tiffany Margolin one recent bright summer day when I saw her mobile clinic, From the Heart Mobile Vet, and I approached to introduce myself.

I found her to be bright, enthusiastic and receptive to my offer to assist her in her practice.

I know from my own experience that mobile and house call work is difficult and highly demanding. It is nearly impossible to maintain a reasonable schedule, not only because of the vagaries of traffic, but also because the bulk of this work can consist of in-home euthanasia, which is something none of us wish to shortchange when we’re running late. Dr. Margolin, like myself and other veterinarians, bestowed this “gift” on clients and pets, allowing them to have their final goodbyes take place in the sacred comfort and privacy of home.

However, offering these services takes a toll on the veterinarian that is greater than most imagine. Many lose their reserve of compassion. “Compassion fatigue,” a term known well in our profession, is a painful spectrum, often leading to burnout and substance abuse. Many quietly end the pain by numbing themselves either transiently or, like Drs. Margolin and Lumsden, permanently.

Our profession does indeed require hard work, dedication, intelligence, wisdom and long hours. Few people realize that our monetary compensation barely covers student loans. What sustains many of us is our special bond with animals, embracing and sustaining that bond between pets and their owners, and our ability to curb pain and suffering in both pets

The department’s annual budget is $40.6 billion (2017) with 229,000 employees (2017). I say that by the very definition of who they are and what they are suppose to do, that they have the power and the right to take assault weapons out of the public’s hands. That these weapons of mass destruction will not, cannot, ever be lawful for public use. It will be illegal to own, sell, buy or trade these types of guns from this date forward. If a citizen wants to handle one of these guns, henceforth he or she will have to join the military!

What sustains many of us is our special bond with animals, embracing and sustaining that bond between pets and their owners, and our ability to curb pain and suffering in both pets and their owners most of the time. and their owners most of the time. We are sustained by thank-you notes and Christmas cookies.

But sometimes criticisms overcome us.

Maybe the veterinarian’s burden does not have to be quite as heavy.

Maybe this tragic story can serve to increase awareness in the general public that veterinarians have aspired to an almost-impossible task in healing animals, in finding “where it hurts” when they cannot tell us, and to do this for a fee that their owners can afford. Maybe just one more card of appreciation would tip the balance for that veterinarian. Maybe just one more citizen who addresses them as “doctor” instead of by their first name would help them to feel respected.

Maybe if more people would heed our medical advice we would feel more valued. If even a small percentage of those who love animals would consider these things and alter their own behavior, it may have a positive impact on at-risk veterinarians. I, for one, am not proud to have missed a tinge of urgency in the bright twinkle of Dr. Margolin’s eyes at my offer to help out.

Rebecca Arredondo 1946-2018

Rebecca was born in Santa Barbara, Calif. on May 27, 1946 to Marion and Larry Trujillo. She passed away peacefully on March 15, 2018 at 71 surrounded by loving family and friends.

Rebecca lived all her life in Santa Barbara. She retired from Helix Medical Inc., in Carpinteria, Calif. where she had worked for about 15 years. Prior to that she worked at McGhan Medical in Goleta, Calif. also for about 15 years.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her beloved sister Rachel Almanza, her parents, numerous aunts and a cousin.

She is survived by her significant other of 15 years, Roberto Alamilla, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Veronica Desjardins, grandchildren Michael and Mikayla Desjardins, nieces Marisa and Debbie Almanza, an aunt, uncle and numerous cousins.

Rebecca loved attending Mikey and Kayla’s baseball and soccer games and cheering them on. She also loved music, dancing and family. Rebecca loved and missed her sister Rachel beyond measure.

She is now joined with her in Heaven while listening to Mariachi and dancing away with her Tia Terri. She loved the color purple, so in her honor the family is requesting that if at all possible purple be worn when attending her funeral.

The Rosary Recitation will be held on Friday, March 23 at 8 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 9 a.m., both at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 1500 Linden Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013.

Internment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, 199 N Hope Ave., Santa Barbara, Calif. following the Mass.

Mortuary services are entrusted to McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, 2020 Chapala St., Santa Barbara, Calif.

John Beck 10/14/1957 – 3/15/2018

We lost John Beck on March 15, 2018.

John passed due to complications of the flu. He is survived by his wife Janell Beck, his son and daughter-in-law John Henry Beck and Virginia Ann, and daughter Amber Smith, all of Feeding Hills, Mass., and his boys Kilo and Milo. John loved riding his Harley Softail to Kern River every year, playing with his boys on the beach, and going to Cold Springs Tavern.

John will be missed by all his family and friends. We love you, John.

A Celebration of Life will be held for John on Thursday, March 29 from 4 p.m. to dusk at Lookout Park in Summerland.

The Carpinteria Sanitary District’s administrative office is a pre-fabricated structure assembled and placed on our Sixth Street property in 1991. The existing modular office building has met the needs of the agency for the past 27 years, but it was originally permitted by the City of Carpinteria as a temporary structure. The City is now requiring the District to replace the temporary structure with a new, permanent building.

Our agreed-upon deadline for completion is in 2019.

Following a comprehensive study that looked at a myriad of siting options, it was determined that our existing one-acre parcel on 6th Street is the best overall location for a new office. The building footprint will be just about the same size as the current temporary structure, but it will have a more functional boardroom and will be raised above the 100-year floodplain elevation. The proposed single-story building is modest but is designed to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Although new construction is expensive here on the South Coast, the administrative office and boardroom will meet the needs of the agency for decades to come.

One of the key aspects of the project is an appealing native landscape design. Our primary objective is to retain and enhance the park-like setting that exists now so that our neighbors and the general public can continue use of the property for picnics and dog walks and general enjoyment.

We are the fortunate stewards of the magnificent Portola Sycamore, a tree rumored to be over 400 years old and perhaps the location where Gaspar de

Portola first encountered local Chumash craftsmen building tomol canoes.

In doing this project, we plan to truly showcase this historic landmark tree and surround it with native coastal live oaks and native sycamores. There will be interpretive signage and the overall planting palate will include native plantings and ground cover.

As has been reported, the District is proposing to remove several large nonnative trees as part of our landscape plan. These include three large Canary Island date palms and three blue gum eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus trees, although prominent, are considered a public safety hazard due to a phenomenon called “sudden limb drop.” Despite regular pruning, we have witnessed massive limbs fall from these trees, even on calm, sunny days. This particular species is known as the “widow maker,” and public agencies everywhere, including the City of Carpinteria, are removing them to protect public safety and restore native landscapes.

Although nobody likes the idea of removing mature trees, the District Board of Directors has carefully considered this topic and they believe that the end product will be an amazing and inviting landscape for the community, with even greater habitat value for local fauna than what the non-native trees now provide. Slippery slopes

The next debris flow could take a different, unknown path, scientists say

BY Melinda BurnS as a powerful storm neared the South Coast this week, a mandatory evacuation order for all residents below burn areas conveyed a painful reality: no one knows when or where the next torrent of mud and boulders will come surging down scorched mountainsides.

But it’s a good bet that it could happen, given enough rain. according to a recent report by a team of state hydrologists and geologists, 50 out of 138 streams and tributaries in the mountains above Montecito and Carpinteria have a 60 percent or greater likelihood of producing debris flows in the aftermath of the thomas Fire, based on a rainfall rate of about 1 inch per hour. the same relatively high odds were reported for Ventura County burn areas. the risks could remain high for two to five years, until the vegetation grows back, scientists said. “i’ve never seen this degree of hazard, compared to other fires, and I’ve done post-fire hazard assessments for the past 10 years of my career,” said drew Coe, the Cal Fire hydrologist who headed the state watershed emergency response team for the thomas Fire. twenty-six scientists started work on the report in early January, before the catastrophic debris flow of Jan. 9, and before the fire was contained on Jan. 12. as the Santa Barbara Independent has reported, the team rushed a preliminary report to Santa Barbara County officials on Jan. 7, 30 hours before the deluge, highlighting the danger of flooding and debris flows roughly from East Mountain drive to east Valley road and a few lower-lying areas in Montecito. Fatefully, the county opted not to order mandatory evacuations for the areas highlighted by the team south of east Valley; in one of those spots, just below the intersection of east Valley and Montecito Creek, 11 people died on Jan. 9.

For tuesday through thursday, the national weather Service is forecasting an “atmospheric river event” that could bring as much as half- to three-quarters of an inch per hour. But forecasters are not ruling out “isolated rainfall rates” as high as one inch per hour, especially as the storm system cold front approaches the area between wednesday night and thursday morning. the storm could bring 10 inches of rain to the burn areas, forecasters said.

A flash flood watch is in effect. the post-fire season for communities below the thomas Fire burn area is uniquely perilous, Coe said, in part because the fire, the largest in modern California history, sat around and baked the ground, creating a water-repellent crust. By contrast, he said, the october fires in Sonoma County, though devastating to life and property, moved through quickly and didn’t alter the soil. also, Coe said, Sonoma County is not at risk from such steep, easily-eroded slopes as those in the Santa ynez Mountains above Montecito and Carpinteria, or the topatopa Mountains above ojai. according to the recent report, Montecito is located downslope and downstream of some of some of the highest elevations, steepest slopes and most severely burned terrain within the 440 square-mile footprint of the thomas Fire, which started in Ventura County last dec.

Since Jan. 9, the report said, the debris is piled high within them and “could be mobilized again.” the prehistoric geology of the place poses yet another danger, scientists found. Much of Montecito is located on

The mountains behind Carpinteria have experienced landslides even in the absence of fire. Post-fire, “mass movements should be expected,” the report said. debris flows that, during big storms, were deposited at the mouths of canyons over thousands of years. Most of Montecito’s 4,400 homes are built on top of these ancient deposits, called alluvial fans. remote sensing imagery, or Lidar, taken of Montecito by air after Jan. 9, using light from a laser to survey the ground, has revealed several old abandoned channels across these fans—effectively, low spots that future debris flows could migrate to, jumping the creek banks, Coe said. the report noted that “residential development is dense along these channels” and that their debris flow potential was “not verified with the county prior to the development of these areas.” “the difficulty in Montecito is the degree of unpredictability of where the streams are going to move,” Coe said. “really, it was the imagery that let us know the alluvial fan hazards we were dealing with. every one of those moderate-to-large-sized streams has a fan, and they’re all coalescing.”

Carpinteria is equally at risk of postfire debris flows, scientists found, with the added danger of rockfalls in upper oil Canyon, east of toro Canyon, and the front country north of town, where numerous large boulders can be seen at the base of steep rocky slopes. the mountains behind Carpinteria have experienced landslides even in the absence of fire. Post-fire, “mass movements should be expected,” the report said.

The danger of flooding in communities under the burn area is heightened, too.

In 1969, the report noted, high-intensity rains caused debris flows that blocked culverts, bridges and creeks, causing widespread flooding in Carpinteria.

That was five years after the Coyote Fire burned 100 square miles above Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria—the county’s first big urban fire.

Starting on mountain roads and work-

ing their way down through the urban areas, the thomas Fire watershed team identified 178 homes, businesses, parks, golf courses, roads, highways, farm buildings, railroad lines and gas lines in Montecito and Carpinteria with a “high,” “moderate” or “low” risk of “hazard to life” from future debris flows. Most of these structures were near streams, on alluvial fans or in the flood plain, and many were damaged on Jan. 9. the addresses or approximate location of each of these “values-at-risk” were included in the report, which listed 397 similar values-at-risk in Ventura County, plus 63 that were located in oil fields, including active oil wells, pipelines, tanks and processing plants.

The lists do not represent an official hazard assessment, Coe said; they are the results of a rapid survey and are meant to provide tools for post-fire planning.

as the second big storm of this winter approaches, the U.S. army Corps of Engineers has nearly finished clearing the last of 11 catch basins on Montecito and Carpinteria creeks that were filled to overflowing on Jan. 9, county officials said. the basin where the cleanup still continues, on Santa Monica Creek, is the largest of the 11; it is believed to have prevented major damage to Carpinteria. the 11 basins trapped only a small percentage of 2.5 million cubic yards of debris that were estimated to have been deposited on Jan. 9 in Montecito and Carpinteria. But, Coe said, the basins “made a real difference” because they also significantly slowed the torrent of mud and rocks as it approached the urban areas. “it’s not just the material you’re trapping; you’re reducing the velocity of the flows,” he said. in preparation for storms such as the one now on the way, the watershed report advises residents “first and foremost” to heed evacuation warnings from local officials. “don’t rely on what you’ve seen in past debris flows,” it says. “Debris flows can hit new areas or return to previous areas; they might be smaller—or larger—the next time. whatever happened before, the next time could be different.”

On March 8 at approximately 7:15 a.m. a man flagged down a deputy in front of a convenience store on Via Real. The deputy described the man as a transient and stated that the man told him that a woman whom he did not know had walked up and slapped him in the face.

The man described the woman as also being homeless and said he wanted to press charges against her for assault.

The deputy reported that the man did not appear to need medical attention and that there was no noticeable redness on his face.

Later in the morning, on the opposite side of the freeway, the deputy spotted a woman who fit the description the man had given—she was sitting on the grass near a Highway 101 onramp. The deputy spoke with the woman, and she admitted to slapping the man because he had stood in front of the area where she was panhandling. The deputy made a report and informed the woman that he was going to forward the matter to the District Attorney to determine whether or not to press charges.

On March 11 at approximately 4:30 p.m. the manager of a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road called deputies to report two young men having stolen three-packs of 24-ounce Budweiser beer. The manager said that he had observed two younger males in the beer aisle of the store, and because they appeared younger than 21 he’d kept an eye on them. They grabbed two three-packs of beer, and one of the youths put the beers in his companion’s pack. The two left the store, and the manager yelled for them to stop, but they fled on a bicycle and skateboard. The manager provided the deputy with video surveillance footage of the two males walking in the store.

Fake Franklins

On March 12 at approximately 10:35 a.m. a man approached the checkout counter of a drugstore on Casitas Pass Road with several items from the store including a Visa gift card, on which he wanted to put $150. The total amount of his purchases was $175, and he gave the cashier two $100 bills. She took the bills and ran a detector pen over them that marks clear on genuine bills but leaves a brown mark on counterfeit bills. The man’s Franklins were counterfeit, and when the cashier returned to the register, he had left the store. She described him as being about 30 years old, wearing a white T-shirt, camouflage hat, black pants and having tattoos on his hands and arms.

He was driving a grey car westbound towards Casitas Pass Road.

On March 12 at approximately 8:50 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to the Franciscan Court apartments on a report of a prowler. A 71-year-old woman was in bed when someone rang her front doorbell.

It took her a few minutes to get the door, but when she arrived no one was there.

About 20 minutes later the woman was back in bed and heard something in her living room area. When she came down to investigate, the woman saw a man who looked to be about 30 years old, approximately 6-foot 1-inch tall, with what she described as a “sculpted” haircut, trying to open the sliding-glass door from her fenced patio area. The woman yelled at the man, and he continued to attempt to get in. She also said the man was wearing dark sweats and a grey fleece jacket and that he was carrying a black, square flashlight. The deputy could not find any prints on the door handle or the glass, nor did his partner find anyone in the area.

Chamber honors two of Carpinteria’s best educators

By Christian Beamish Each year, two top teachers—one at the middle or high school level, and one from an elementary school—are selected for the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year award. The honor comes with a $500 classroom stipend and this year’s recipients, Nathan Casas and Sonia Aguila, also received kudos from their respective principals. Canalino School Principal Jamie Persoon noted that Aguila “consistently improves her skills” and is “warm and supportive with high expectations for her students.” Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo said that Casas “transforms difficult concepts into something easy to remember,” and that his teaching style is “innovative and transformative.” Below are two interviews with Carpinteria’s 2017 Educators of the Year.

Sonia Aguila

Second-grade teacher at Canalino School How long have you been teaching, and how long have you taught second-grade in particular?

This is my 20th year teaching. Unbelievable how time flies! I was 21 years old when I started teaching at Canalino. I have taught second-grade for 15 years. I have also taught first- grade, kindergarten and combo classes.

You mentioned looking forward to teaching secondgrade Dual Language Immersion in a couple of years at Canalino—did you earn a bilingual teaching credential?

I was born in Santa Barbara but attended elementary school in Mexico. Spanish is my first language. I earned my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with an emphasis in Spanish from UCSB in 1998. I am excited and looking forward to teaching DLI in 2 years! Can’t wait!

Where/when did you earn your credential? What was your major in college?

I attended Santa Barbara High School and graduated at age 16. I was salutatorian class of 1993. I then attended SBCC and earned my AA degree in 1995, transferring to UCSB on a full scholarship and received my BA in Chicano Studies in 1997. I earned my Elementary Teaching Credential with emphasis in Spanish in 1998 at UCSB, and then earned my MA in Education in 1998, also at UCSB. I have been working at Canalino Elementary ever since.

Are there particular challenges that students, or some students, in Carpinteria face?

Canalino does an outstanding job with parent involvement. It is a challenge when parents do not get involved in their child’s education. It is important to attend school meetings, read information sent home, help students with homework, check backpacks, pack a snack, etc. Students benefit when teachers and parents team up and work together.

What do you most enjoy about teaching second-grade?

Second-graders are 7- to 8-years-old. I love that age! They are eager to learn; they want to please the teacher. I get so many hugs throughout the day!

You mentioned your radio show on Saturdays—can you tell our readers about that?

I’m a radio hosts at Radio Bronco 107.7FM. “Festival Infantil” is a radio show for children, and it airs on Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m. Music is played for children in Spanish, but also taking into consideration that students are bilingual, I play some popular songs in Eng-

Although my targeted audience is children, I know parents are also listening so I take the opportunity to inform, educate and discuss issues related to education locally and in the nation. I have been doing the show for 21 years. I love getting calls from students all over the county, and recently from other states since they can now listen to our station online.

My own children participate in the show. Natalie, 10, is the weather girl, and she takes song requests. Adrian, 16, is busy playing soccer with Carpinteria High and SB Soccer Club, but when he has time he is my sports announcer.

What do you think is the most important thing for elementary students to be practicing outside of school?

Reading. Students should read daily for pleasure— not because they have to do it for homework. It is one of my goals as an educator to teach students to love reading. Also, spending quality time with family is crucial.

Students need to feel loved, protected, listened to.

Nathan Casas

Math teacher at Carpinteria High School What year did you begin teaching at CHS? I started in January of the 2010 - 2011 school year.

You earned your teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton. How does teacher training square with classroom reality?

The program at CSUF was excellent. They made sure you received a real experience by placing you at schools and with master teachers that really helped develop your skills as a teacher. I student taught at Esperanza and Yorba Linda High Schools, and all of the classes I taught during my teacher training taught me more about how to teach than any course I took during my undergrad.

What math classes do you teach?

I currently have one section of AP Calculus AB, one section of Math 1A, two sections of Math 2 Plus, and one section of Math 2.

What advice do you give to students who struggle with math?

I try to make sure they understand that consistency and struggle are necessary parts of the learning process. Perfection isn’t expected, but the ability to be creative and make connections using reasoning skills is.

What do you most enjoy about teaching?

I truly love mathematics. It has so many beautiful metaphors and connections with history and philosophy that it really keeps me excited every time I get to teach some of my favorite concepts. Best of all, I get to share these ideas with students! Being able to work with people directly and connect with people in the classroom keeps work fun and fresh. There is no greater thrill than getting a student that hates math to feel at least lukewarm about it.

Do you care to comment on the actions that the current generation of high school students here in Carpinteria, and across nation, are taking on the issue of gun violence?

I am proud of our students that empathize with their peers and spoke up in solidarity. Our students want and deserve a safe learning environment, and taking part in the national conversation is important. My question for the students now is: How will you continue to be a positive part of the political process to foster the change you want to see?

Do you place an emphasis on career tracks in regard to mathematics—i.e. what specific math disciplines are used for in the “real world?”

I try to apply the mathematics based on the interests of the students and the common applications in the “real world.” For example, I do a project with students that requires them to measure some of the tallest objects on campus (stadium lights, trees, etc.). The goal is not necessarily to prepare them for a job that requires them to measure tall objects, but to understand that mathematics can remove the barriers that prevent us from doing or solving anything.

The 805 has a sound

—and Jonathan McEuen aims to capture it

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Jonathan Mc Euen rubs his thumb and forefingers together, searching for the ineffable. We’re seated at Nutbelly on Linden Avenue, a bottle of sparkling water between us.

“It represents a coastal-country sound,” he says of his upcoming album, “Through the Sun Gate.” Then in quick succession he references Dwight Yoakam, the Bakersfield Sound and a connection between Bakersfield and Ventura (where he lives and loving refers to as “Ventucky”).

“Bakersfield honors family,” McEuen said. “Families have been here a hundred years.”

They’re rather scattershot, these images, McEuen tying together threads from a lifetime in music—recording in Nashville and growing up among a who’s-who of Americana/folk in his father John McEuen’s circle of peers and musicians stemming from the work of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

But Jonathan stands on his own merits musically, reaching out to fellow players like producer Kevin McCormick who plays bass, and drummer Jim Christie (who, speaking of Yoakam, played drums for Dwight). They’ve got a gig Saturday night, March 24, at 8 p.m. at the Alcazar Theatre at 4916 Carpinteria Ave. “The first set,” McEuen says, “we’ll do the record.”

The rest, he said, will be a more free-form second set.

“We approached the process (of recording the album) like Nashville,” McEuen said, “If you can’t get it the first take, it ain’t worth getting.” He talks about a particular sound that the VenturaCarpinteria-Santa Barbara area produces.

“805 has a sound—but I don’t think the world knows it.” And speaking of local sound, McEuen is thrilled with the Alcazar Theatre as a local venue, saying “it’s one of the better venues on the coast.”

“Through the Sun Gate,” McEuen says, “is definitely a country record, a Ventura

Stanfield celebrates the grain in film and wood

Amy Lynn Espina Stanfield, a longtime server at Island Brewing Company, will have an exhibit of her wood-transferred photos at the brewery from March 23 to April 29. Stanfield hand prints her images on wood panels, achieving a unique effect. Specializing in black and white photography, and often shooting with 35mm film, Stanfield feels that her wood-transfer technique captures the true essence of what nature has to offer by omitting the background and revealing the natural, wood grain. “Being naked is natural, raw and vulnerable. When the photos are transferred to the wood, they are exposing of themselves,” Stanfield said. “I like to challenge people by having to see things in a different light.” After she selects an image, she hand-transfers it in a two-part process and then coats, frames and signs each piece. After studying fine art at New Mexico State University, Stanfield met her art mentor, Aurora Valentine, who helped her hone her artistic vision while they taught together at the Carpinteria Arts Center. An artists reception for Stanfield’s IBC show will be held on Friday, March 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the brewery, 5049 6th Street.

Bluebird skies emerged between rainstorms last weekend for Carpinteria Education Foundation’s 26th annual Orchard to Ocean Race benefiting Carpinteria Unified School district. This year’s 10k found Andrew Sinclair of Carpinteria crossing the finish line in first, 51 seconds ahead of second-place Tanner Martin of Goleta. But 50-year-old Martin got right back out for the 5k and claimed first in 19:02. Carpinterian Garrett Prather, 25, was close behind in the 5k, finishing second in 19:10 (6:11 per mile).

Future so bright for Warrior tennis

Building off the momentum of a shared 2017 Frontier League Title, the Carpinteria High School boys tennis team is once again off to a flying start with a 4-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in league. “It was the first time … in about six years since we’d won League,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant whose team tied with Foothill Tech last season for the top spot. So far, the Warriors only blemish on their record is a non-league loss in a match at Ventura.

In order to defend the title, last year’s co-champs will have to do it without the services of 2017 grads Jacob Ascencio and Sam Truax. “They were very productive players; we got a lot of wins out of them. It’s always hard to replace them, but players do eventually step up and take their spots,” explained Bryant. The longtime coach expects Jeremy Saito, one of his returning players, to step up as his “main” player this year. Saito has been practicing in the offseason and looking sharp according to the Bryant.

Myles Morgan also figures to be a big contributor.

In doubles, having just returned from the pitch as key members of CHS’s CIF Southern California Regional State Division V Soccer Championship Team, twin brothers Luke and Solomon Nahooikaika should also have an impact. “They’re going to do double duty; they’re going to do volleyball, too,” said Bryant of the

two multi-sport, student athletes who will also play for Coach Dino Garcia’s volleyball team during a season that runs concurrent with tennis. Kirby Zapata whose also been playing well should also be a factor in doubles play.

Freshman Jackson Phillips could be another Warrior to look out for, but unfortunately he injured his finger in the first match during the tiebreaker win over Pacifica, which could cost him some play time. However, defending cochampion Foothill Tech has a couple of freshmen who could also have a say in who wins league this year. “I think they probably have a little more advantage than us,” explained Bryant. “They have two very good returners coming back (in addition to the two freshmen) …,” added Bryant, who figures the league will go down to the wire like last year before a champion emerges.

As far as the other teams in the Frontier are concerned, St. Bonaventure looks to be improved. In contrast, Bishop Diego who was unable to field a team last year, has gathered together what amounts to be a half-team this year and is unlikely to be competitive. Santa Clara appears to be the unknown variable. Meanwhile, the Warrior squad will face a challenging non-league schedule. Having already lost to Ventura, Carpinteria will also travel to play Arroyo Grande, Cabrillo,

Boys volleyball

March 11 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team traveled to play Orcutt and came away with a 3-1 win. “Setter Luke Nakasone continues to play hard under taut-pressured moments—he ended with 23 assists,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Opposite Number-six Jack Gay was ended with 15 kills. Libero Number-five Jiovani Arciniega had 16 Digs. “The Warriors communicated well and displayed a well-organized defense which stopped Orcutt’s hitters,” explained Garcia. Match Scores for the game were: 25-22, 9-25, 25-19 and 25-21.

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball took on Hueneme down south, falling to the Vikings, 3-0. Opposite hitter Jack Gay had 11 kills. “Middle hitter Ben Medel was quick on the net, gaining four kills,” said Warrior coach Dino Garcia. Setter Luke Nakasone added 17 assists. “Carpinteria’s team effort is one of the Warriors’ strong features; these guys really encourage each other to play with 110 percent effort on the court,” said Garcia.

March 15 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team finished off the Fillmore Flashes with a 3-2 win in the fifth set. Opposite hitter Jack Gay had nine kills and two blocks, while middle hitter Ben Medel added seven kills and four blocks. Setter Luke Nakasone contributed 18 assists. “The middles did a great job of defending the court with uniform blocks; their blocking helped shut down Fillmore go-to hitters in the last set,” said Warrior coach Dino Garcia. The match scores were 23-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-10. League record for Carpinteria now improves to 2-1 with an overall record of 2-2.

Boys tennis

March 15 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team opened up their Frontier League schedule with a win against St. Bonaventure, 14-4. In singles, Jeremy Saito won his only two sets without dropping a game, while Myles Morgan went 3-0.

Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika went 2-0 before Kirby subbed out and Corban Pampel paired with Solomon to win their last set. Luke Nahooikaika/Ian McCurry went 2-0 and only dropped one game before being subbed out. Cameron Gralewski/ Esteban Zapata went 1-0, and Coach Charles Bryant said he was really happy with the play of J.R. Hajducko/Steve Poulos. “They went 2-0, did not drop a game and just looked so energetic on the courts,” said Bryant. “Carlos Costilla picked up our other singles win, but again showed a lot of improvement this week.”

Track and Field

March 15 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team swept all divisions against St. Bonaventure and La Reina. The Warrior girls beat La Reina for the first time since 2004 by a score of 70 to 65, and also bested St. Bonaventure by a count of 100 to 34. The boys broke a similar drought, beating St. Bonaventure for the first time since 2003 by a score of 103 to 32. Shaya Alexander won the long and triple jumps and was the anchor leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay team that provided the final win to clinch the Carpinteria victory in the overall scoring for the girls. Yvette Zamora won both hurdle races and was part of the winning relay team also. For the boys, Wyatt Stevenson won both the 100 and 200 meters, and was part of the victorious 4x100

relay team. Terrell Richardson won both hurdle races, setting a new personal record in the 110m high hurdles, while Roderick Hutchinson set personal records winning both the long jump and the high jump.

Softball

March 18 – The Carpinteria High School softball team split a doubleheader at Nipomo, falling in the first game, 10-5, and winning the second game, 19-0. In the first game, the Warriors committed eight errors that contributed to eight Titan runs, as the home team built a 10-0 lead up to the fifth inning. Kayana Diaz started that inning with a double, Mikayla Blair walked, and Diaz scored on Raquel Cordero’s infield hit. Samantha Saenz then doubled to score Blair and Cordero. Isabel Studt then hit a triple to score Saenz. Iliana Esquivel’s sacrifice fly scored Studt to complete the five-run inning, while Amanda Blair gave up six hits on the mound.

In the second game, Carpinteria scored eight runs in the second inning. Amanda Blair hit a double to score two runs, and Samantha Saenzs single also scored two runs. In the third inning, Amanda had another double for two more runs. The fourth saw Kayana Diaz hit a two-run home run over the center field fence. The Warriors scored seven runs in the fifth on five hits, led by Raquel Cordero’s two-run single, Kayana Diaz’s two-run double and Isabel Studt’s RBI single. Amanda Blair gave up three hits and had five strikeouts on the bump. On the day, Studt went six-for-seven at the plate with two RBI and scored four runs. Saenz was four-for-seven with five RBI and three runs scored, while Diaz was three-for-six with four RBI.

Boys golf

March 15 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team shot 485 and took second place out of six teams in a Frontier League match held at Ojai’s Soule Park. Freshman Diego Mendez led the Warriors with a score of 91, followed by Jacob Mata who tallied a 93 and Caleb Nagle who finished a stroke behind second place for a 94. “I knew (Mendez) had some talent but didn’t expect such a good score in his debut,” said first-year coach Chris Cochrane. “He went from hooking the ball and almost killing a couple farmers (next to the driving range at Tee Time) to hitting mostly fairways at Soule Park,” added Cochrane. Villanova (the host team) was first with a team score of 459, and Santa Paula was third with a 493.

Baseball

March 16 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell 4-2 to St. Bonaventure on a rain-shortened game at Seraph Field in Ventura. Junior lefty Jake Saum picked up the win for St. Bonaventure as he exited after four innings, not having surrendered a hit and with a 4-0 lead. Warrior junior lefty Noah Nuño tossed three innings, and freshman righty Miles Souza relieved for one inning. Carpinteria scratched out two runs on a walk to Vance Keiser, an error and an RBI hit by Chase Mayer. The rally ended after the top of the fifth with the bases loaded with Warriors, as the game was called after 4 1/2 innings, long enough for it to become official, as the umpires declared the field conditions unsafe to continue. “Conditions were miserable for baseball, but we all worked really hard to get the game in,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney.

March 17 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team in a Tri-Valley League game that was rescheduled twice, lost to St. Bonaventure for the second-consecutive day, 6-2. This time, it was the Warriors who jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but their St. Patrick’s Day luck ran out as the Seraphs tallied four runs in the second and extended their lead with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Warrior lefty Chase Mayer kept the Seraph lineup in check, until he met the pitch count limit with two outs in the sixth inning. Toby Spach led the Warriors on offense as he had two hits and an RBI. “Tricky to have your third and fourth games of the season come against the league favorite, but we made some important steps forward,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney, whose team is now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in League. “Defense continues to be a focal point,” added Cooney, pointing out the efforts of Spach, Vance Keiser, Jacob Macias, Noah Nuño and Dom Sturdivan.

Last year, Junior Warriors had five tackle teams and 30 cheerleaders.

Carpinteria FFA travels to Tulare

Marith Parton honored by Tri-County GATE Council

Carpinteria Middle School teacher Marith Parton was recognized by the Tri-County GATE Council for providing outstanding service to students in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. Parton was among a group of local parents and educators to receive the Council’s “We Honor Our Own” recognition.

“Ms. Parton is well respected by students, parents, and colleagues,” said GATE Coordinator Teresa Koontz. “Clearly, she is an exemplary teacher and CUSD is proud to see her receive this recognition.”

Parton is in her fourth year of teaching seventh- and eighth-grade language arts at Carpinteria Middle School. Kevin O’Hara, Parton’s colleague and former SBCEO mentor, said, “Entering Marith’s classroom is like walking into a zen poem; it is simple, orderly, clean, SUBMITTED PHOTO yet profound. Having participated in Marith’s Carpinteria Middle School classroom on multiple occasions, I’ve observed language arts teacher Marith that she is always attentive and positive with her Parton received the GATE students. Carpinteria’s Future farmers of America recently made the 200-mile drive to Tulare to attend the World Ag Expo. The group learned about the ways in which the world of agriculture is changing, and also began to get a sense of “how much there is to agriculture that we haven’t learned yet,” according to club reporter Adam Lent.

Community resilience highlights 2018 Rincon Classic

Faced with what some long-time surfers are calling the worst year for waves in 55-years—not to mention the disasters of December and January—the Rincon Classic was held on the next-to-last waiting weekend for the permitted event. While the surf for the 2018 contest was by no means excellent (as it has been most other years), finals day on Sunday, March 18, saw extremely clean conditions and definitely contestable waves. As event director and Surf Happens owner Chris Keet said of the competition, “It’s never just about the surf—it’s about the core community that makes it happen.” For results, visit rinconclassic.com.

High plains paddling cVn

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham Surely Clint Eastwood didn’t envision Mono Lake as a sublime paddling destination during the filming of the 1973 Western classic High Plains Drifter, but today that high desert realm located in Eastern Sierra is just that, with a few surprises along the way.

A permit is required to paddle the expanse of the saline soda lake, not because the State of California was trying to rake in some much needed coin from the kayaking culture, but simply to keep track of folks that paddle astray. Apparently there have been a lot of people who have underestimated the potentially vicious winds that blast out of the desert and Eastern Sierra, transforming a tranquil paddle into an unwanted fight for survival.

“A lot of people have died paddling out there,” said a weathered park ranger at deserted Navy Beach, located on the south side of the 40-mile circumference.

He was there looking/waiting for me, Danny Trudeau and Craig Fernandez. We didn’t know that we needed a permit, but he didn’t seem too upset with us.

“We’ve had people in the past paddle out and never make it back,” he continued deadpan. “Next time head over to the visitor’s center and fill out the paperwork. It won’t take long.”

I promised I would and apologized for making him worry. I didn’t tell him about the two gentlemen with the slick, carpetbagger moustaches, dress hats and the KMart special blow-up raft we encountered on the western shore of the lake. Nah, we were still soaking in our three-day push around the two main islands, Negit and Paoha, and the maze of tufas clustered around the south/southwest lakeshore.

Thermal awakening

The water was cold in Mono Lake, at least initially. We expected it to be so, especially kayaking at 6,392 feet in the Eastern Sierra and with snowmelt running out of tributaries like Lee Vining, Mill and Rush creeks. After launching from Navy Beach, we arrived at Paoha 40 minutes later. Along the way we all estimated the water to be in the 40s.

However, when we paddled to the southeast end of Paoha we felt the water getting increasingly warm, finally to the point where it was too hot to touch. Thermals were spewing above and bubbling up beneath the volcanic isle.

We found a spot that we guesstimated was in the mid 90s, and so we had a soak right out of our kayaks with the Eastern Sierra and Tioga Pass as a breathtaking backdrop. It was a pleasant surprise on the first day of paddling while sharing the warm waters with resident California gulls that fluctuated between feeding in the cold waters for those itty bitty shrimp and then warming themselves when the need arose. There are several more small islets in Mono Lake, and the gulls breed and nest on all the islands.

After our soak we paddled for the north side of the island. As soon as the sun dipped behind the Eastern Sierra it grew cold quickly. We found a half

Danny Trudeau and Craig Fernandez lounge in the crystal clear water of Mono Lake. moon-shaped cove, and perched atop the black volcanic cobble, was a picnic table, a perfect campsite overlooking shimmering Mono Lake and the vast desert plain beyond.

Tufa towns

It wasn’t easy getting up and out of our tents the next morning. That Eastern Sierra chill was hanging tough. A light wind added a bite to it, so we waited until the sun rose above the mountains to the east. After packing up, we headed for the first stands of tufas situated just north of Lee Vining. Over time the unique combination of freshwater springs and alkalinity has created the other worldly calcium-carbonate spires that stabilize the shoreline.

We took our time during the two-hour paddle, enjoying the grandeur of the Eastern Sierra and the 10,000-foot peaks nearly jutting out of the lake. We were soon joined by hundreds of migrating eared grebes. It was late September, and the scruffy little water birds’ numbers grow to ridiculous proportions in the fall.

According to park personnel they arrive each day by the thousands in September and October. They bobbed on the water like little battery operated toys, then quickly porpoised after the tiny balls of brine shrimp clouding the otherwise crystal clear water.

Even from a fair distance away from the tufas, this region of Mono Lake was much shallower then anything we’d paddled thus far. As the tufas wafted on the high desert horizon between the water and mountains, the incessant chirp of ospreys pierced the lake’s solitude.

We deemed the majestic ospreys the “keepers of the tufas.” They reminded us of angry gargoyles keeping watch over their precious lake. The tufas are not only convenient perches for these fish-eating raptors, but many provide nesting habitat for these black and white birds. Fortified with tangled sticks and twigs, several of the more prominent tufas are headdressed with osprey nests. Long before we arrived anywhere on Mono Lake, the ospreys let us know they were nearby.

That’s pretty much how it happened for us while hugging the westerly shore, hoping to locate one of those concealed nooks and crannies with just enough room for three kayakers. Late in the afternoon, with the sun sinking behind snow-capped mountains, we discovered

a raised beach overlooking the lake towards the western flanks of the two main islands.

Gusty northeast winds swirled across the lake, and then with dusk descending over the water, the three of us watched bewildered as two schleps motored toward the western edge of Paoha in a flimsy raft straight out of a K-Mart checkout line.

As we traded our only pair of binoculars back and forth amongst us, we came to the conclusion that their makeshift motor was on par with an eggbeater.

They were about halfway to the island when something went awry. They were soon drifting and struggling to right their ship against swirling winds. It was nearly dark, but what we could decipher in poor light was this: the captain of the vessel had an oar and was sitting in a lounge chair furiously paddling on either side of his raft. His beleaguered first mate was ordered to lay over the bow and perform some sort of hideous breast stroke to assist with their mishap.

Somehow they managed to paddle back to shore, probably using our cozy

fire as a beacon of hope. When they disembarked their miserable olive green raft—their battery operated motor clinging to its fragile stern—we had to ask why?

“We were about to drive through Yosemite and I had this inclination to paddle/motor across Mono Lake,” said the man with plaid shorts, a bowling shirt and a fedora hat. “I just had to be on the water.”

Dressed nearly identically, his partner in crime didn’t say a word, and that was probably a good thing. They’d begun their venture at a dilapidated boat launch. Earlier in the day we had paddled past it, and now they were hoping to return there in some fashion.

“Think we could paddle back there,” he asked, as we all looked at him with raised eyebrows.

“You best not,” said Danny. “It’s dark now and it appears you don’t have any lights.”

They ended up dragging their boat back to where they began, not thoroughly convinced that was their best option.

The great escape

At dawn we padd l e d t h ro u g h o u r third and final tufa maze, the clustered towers standing tall at the base of the desolate Mono Craters.

From our kayaks we studied a long plume of dust.
