On Tuesday, March 17, Howard School third-grader Mia Talkin attends a virtual lesson with her classmates and teacher Sharon Reed. The school’s Carpinteria campus is closed in response to COVID-19 safety measures, but instruction continues through a remote model that teachers hurried to organize over the weekend. In a message to families announcing the transition, Howard School’s headmaster Joel Reed wrote, “It can be oversaid, but hopefully never under-appreciated: as a community, we will get through this together. We will take advantage of the opportunity to model for our children what are among life’s most important lessons: that of being resilient, solving problems creatively, supporting one another and above all being hopeful.”

City to continue providing essential services

On Tuesday, March 17, the city of Carpinteria released their COVID-19/ coronavirus Social Distance Plan, detailing which essential local government services would continue to be provided to the Carpinteria community during the extraordinary circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public service counter operations

CARPINTERIA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT (CVWD) WATER IS SAFE FOR DRINKING AND WILL NOT BE INTERRUPTED DURING COVID-19 EMERGENCY Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) wants to reassure you that your drinking water is safe and will not be interrupted. CVWD is monitoring the Coronavirus Outbreak situation closely and taking reasonable precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of our staff and our citizens. CVWD is implementing an Operational Continuity Plan to ensure that your safe potable water supply is uninterrupted during the COVID-19 emergency. Coordination between local Water Agencies and Emergency Managers in Santa Barbara County is underway and will continue throughout this emergency to ensure uninterrupted water service.

The EPA issued the following statement regarding drinking water; “Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual. The EPA (and California Drinking Water Regulators) have established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater. COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective.”

CDC released the following statement; “The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

The best available methods for water treatment are used to ensure CVWD water is safe, including conventional multi-barrier treatment processes and ozone and chlorine disinfectants which are very effective at killing viruses such as the COVID-19.

The public service counter at City Hall—a hub of activity for planning permits, building permits engineering permits and park rentals—will be closed from Wednesday, March 18 through April 3.

Planning and Engineering staff will continue to operate via email and phone communications. Routine activities such as applying for, or issuing permits, licenses and similar functions may be affected. To make arrangements for these services, call (805) 684-5405.

Building and planning inspections will continue; however, they will be performed at the discretion of the building inspector/plans examiner and planners consistent with the county health officer order to practice social distancing through maintaining a six-foot distance from others.

Code compliance

In-person code enforcement interactions with the public will be limited as much as possible. Effective at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, the city of Carpinteria suspended vehicle ticketing in areas posted for street sweeping and timed parking. At this time, the city expects to resume enforcement on April 6.

Enforcement of disabled parking, red, yellow and passenger loading zones will continue.

California and Local Public Health Officials have issued guidance on social distancing in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19. In an effort to implement this guidance the CVWD office will be closed to walk-in customers but will remain open to assist customers and conduct business by telephone.

Additionally, CVWD public meetings will be held telephonically until further notice. Agendas will continue to be posted online and at the District Offices.

CVWD public meetings will comply to the provisions of the modified Brown Act as described in the California Executive Order 25-20. A call-in number to CVWD public meetings will be provided on the agenda and audio recordings will be posted on the CVWD website. If members of the public do not have access to a telephone to dial in, a location will be provided in which members of the public can listen and participate in the meeting.

Shopping local in times of distance

When Procore Technologies instructed its 850 employees based in Carpinteria to start working from home as early as last week, the first shockwave was felt throughout the downtown business community.

In a statement to KEYT published on March 5, the software company said they were “taking action to minimize the risk of spreading the coronavirus, and to ensure business continuity” by mandating all of their 2,000 employees worldwide to work from home.

Other Carpinteria-based tech companies followed suit. By the end of the week, LinkedIn, Agilent and Nusil had also asked most of their nearly 800 combined employees to work remotely, if possible.

Smaller offices throughout the city also moved their operations online and by end of day Friday, March 13, Carpinteria

Unified School District’s 365 employees started an initial two-weeks of working from home (or taking leave) amidst districtwide school closures.

Then, between Saturday, March 14, and Monday, March 16, state and local governments instructed residents to stay home except for essential activities, individuals 65 and older were told to isolate themselves, bars were ordered shut and all restaurant dining was halted.

In Carpinteria, the foundation of the community’s small-town beach character is the eclectic mix of mom and pop shops and family-owned eateries, breweries and services. As the streets empty out, these businesses will struggle to stay afloat. As long as this crisis continues, CVN will be providing information from local business purveyors on what services they continue to offer and what the community can do to help.

Eighty percent of The Food Liaison’s (TFL) business is in regular catering for corporate clients. When Carpinteria’s tech giants sent their hundreds of workers home, they also cancelled all their catering orders with TFL. This is a big hit for a small business.

In response, TFL had to lay off seven employees, with the hope “to bring everyone back on payroll once this passes,” said TFL’s owners Nirasha and Jason Rodriguez.

TFL’s café on Casitas Pass Road is still open and ready to provide customers with its most popular dishes to go—crack boxes, tartines, soups, house-baked pastries, daily additions and complete dinners. The menu also offers some new items. Instead of the salad bar, you can order the “salad box,” a mix of “locally sourced greens from our wonderful farmers in the area.”

Already known for its pristine kitchen and dining area, TFL has upped its standards even further. “We are following all the CDC and sanitation guidelines even more so than we normally do in our very clean restaurant, something we have always prided ourselves on,” said Nirasha.

To order online, customers should visit TheFoodLiaison.com and click on the “online ordering” link. Customers can also order by scanning TFL’s QR Code with a smartphone camera, which immediately brings up the online ordering webpage.

“Our customers have found the process to be quick and easy,” said Jason, “allowing them to place and pay for their order for every single item our restaurant is known for, including our delicious pastries, and come to the restaurant to collect their food without having to come in direct contact with anyone.”

Along with vitamins and sundries, the Carpinteria Avenue health food store offers many grocery store staples including fresh baked goods, fruits and vegetables, and eggs, meat, chicken and fish. The store also has a well-stocked freezer and refrigerator section.

On Monday, the store installed nitrile glove dispensers at its door, asking customers to put them on before entering the shop. “To best protect our customers and staff, we ask that you wear nitrile gloves while shopping with us today,” wrote the storekeepers on Facebook. “We will provide them for you upon entering the shop.

Our staff continues to take all safety and cleanliness precautions. They are washing their hands twice per hour and sanitizing all surfaces throughout the day. Thank you for supporting our local shop, we love our community!”

If your furry friend needs medical attention, don’t worry, Animal Medical Clinic is still open and tending to patients (while also adhering to county recommendations for social distancing).

This week, Animal Medical Clinic implemented a drop off policy for patient exams.

The clinic will schedule drop offs for a specific time and asks that clients call when they arrive for a clinician to come out to the car to collect the pet for examination.

Communication with pet owners will be conducted by telephone during the exam.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but, until the danger has passed, we feel compelled to do everything within our power to limit the spread of this disease,” wrote a representative from the clinic.

In their efforts to maintain a safe and healthy establishment for the community, Reynaldo’s European and Mexican Bakery announced Monday that they are now offering a “no touch delivery service” to homes and businesses in Carpinteria city limits. Delivery hours will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All orders must be called in and pre-paid by credit card, with a minimum order of $15 (plus $3 for delivery) for home orders and $50 for businesses (plus $5 for delivery).

The bakery is also offering a curbside pick-up option. Customers are asked to preorder and prepay by credit card and to park behind the bakery. Once there, customers should call Reynaldo’s and an employee will bring the order to the car.

In addition to fresh baked breads, cookies and cakes, Reynaldo’s also offers hearty meals such as burritos, tamales and enchiladas.

In addition to testing, we have put in proactive social distancing requirements and it is absolutely critical that anyone who feels any respiratory symptom, including a sore throat, cough and runny nose, stay home. And stay home for 72 hours after complete freedom of symptoms.

With social distancing, we alter the course of transmission, and if we follow through with the requirements of social distancing, we will have far less cases than we would otherwise.

Q: Will we have drive by testing?

A: Two health care providers are setting up drive by testing (details to follow).* It’s important for people to recognize that drive by testing is still by appointment with the person screened ahead of time. It just allows the testing to take place out in the parking lot and removes the option for the person to go indoors and possibly interact with others.

It is not open for everyone and will not be at this time.

Q: What do I do if I’m experiencing symptoms?

A: If you are experiencing any upper respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, sneezing, shortness of breath or fever) the best thing for you to do is behave as if you have the virus and self-isolate until 72 hours after freedom of symptoms.

County’s second positive case of COVID-19 confirmed

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) confirmed on March 16 another positive case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in a North County resident.

This is the second confirmed case in Santa Barbara County.

The person identified is in their 50s and does not have underlying health conditions.

They are currently recovering in isolation at home. PHD is taking steps to identify persons who may have had close contact with this person—including friends, family members or health care professionals—and will monitor them and take appropriate measures, including testing for infection, if needed.

While the person has no history of travel within or outside the United States, they did have contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19. (Contact was not made with Santa Barbara County’s first confirmed case, also from North County). PHD will notify the public immediately should the investigation indicate any further action or if additional precautions are needed.

“The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is continuing to mandate social distancing measures to slow the spread of the virus. We are asking our residents to avoid unnecessary outings and practice diligent distancing of six feet or more between persons when in the community,” according to Dr. Henning Ansorg, public health officer for Santa Barbara County.

County will prosecute price-gouging

On March 11, California Governor Gavin Newsom implemented price-gouging protections, effective immediately and through Sept. 4, 2020. Shortly after, Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced that her office will diligently investigate and prosecute cases of price-gouging for as long as Santa Barbara County is under a State of Emergency for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dudley encouraged county residents to report any instances of price-gouging when shopping for consumer goods or medical supplies.

California’s anti-price-gouging statute, Penal Code Section 396, prohibits raising the price of many consumer goods and services by more than 10 percent after an emergency has been declared.

This law applies to any person or business selling goods or services including consumer goods, food and drink items, emergency supplies, medical supplies, storage facilities, emergency cleanup materials and transportation.

Violations of the price-gouging statute are subject to criminal prosecution that can result in one-year imprisonment in county jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Violators are also subject to civil enforcement actions including civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation, injunctive relief and mandatory restitution.

“Local businesses have traditionally been community partners during crises,” said Dudley. “But anyone that profiteers during a state of emergency will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. County residents must have access to necessary supplies, especially when community health is at stake.”

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of price-gouging, or who has information regarding potential price-gouging, is encouraged to immediately file a complaint with the District Attorney’s Office by calling (805) 568-2300 or completing a Consumer Complaint Form at oag.ca.gov/consumers/pricegougingduringdisasters.

Bars, nightclubs, pubs, wineries and breweries asked to close

Restaurant dining halted, take-out and delivery to continue

As part of the public health effort to slow the spread of coronavirus disease, and heeding new guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Santa Barbara County bars, nightclubs, pubs, breweries and wineries were asked to immediately close to the public, effective March 17.

Restaurants and other food facilities offering onsite dining were told to immediately transition to only offering delivery or take-out service. Santa Barbara County’s Public Health Department (PHD) urged businesses to comply with this request immediately and to cancel any planned St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or events.

The new advisory, aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 in communities, targets bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other food facilities, because they “are locations where people from many parts of the community gather, increasing the chances of transmitting the virus that causes coronavirus disease,” according to PHD. While many bars, nightclubs and pubs traditionally hold events for St. Patrick’s Day, PHD stated that these celebrations are particularly dangerous at this point in the coronavirus pandemic, as they could result in widespread transmission of the disease in Santa Barbara County.

Grocery stores, markets and activities such Foodbank distribution sites are not being asked to close at this time, as they provide critical services to the community. PHD has provided social distancing guidance for these operations, such as ensuring at least six feet of space between groups of unrelated people while shopping or standing in line.

County modifies animal shelter services

To keep shelter animals, staff and the community safe during the COVID-19 outbreak, Santa Barbara County Animal Services (SBCAS) has modified operations and created a proactive plan to mitigate unnecessary gatherings of people.

Shelter Operations will temporarily be limiting in-person services, effective immediately. All shelter locations will remain open by appointment or via phone. Inperson services include adoptions, shelter intakes and return-to-owner of animals already in the care of the shelter. All measures will be taken to return animals to their owners in the field instead of impounding them; owner surrender intakes will be on an emergency basis only.

Animal Control Field Operations will respond to priority calls only per the recommendations of National Animal Care and Control Association. Priority calls include law enforcement assistance, injured or sick stray animals, cruelty and neglect complaints, bite complaints and dangerous and aggressive dog complaints.

Current volunteers who would like to assist, can contact Michelle Maltun at (805) 345 -5741. Staff will be on site during normal operating hours to answer questions by phone only and address any concerns relating to animal sheltering or animal control.

Court cases postponed to April

On March 16, presiding Judge Michael J. Carrozzo signed an administrative order continuing most scheduled matters in the Santa Barbara County Superior Court to a date after April 3. Parties with cases scheduled during that time will receive notification of their rescheduled date.

Most courtrooms in Santa Barbara County Superior Court will be closed. Only the criminal arraignment (hearing only in-custody matters) and juvenile courtrooms in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara will remain open.

Jurors currently serving on jury duty should report to court to receive direction from the judge presiding over that trial.

The clerk’s offices will remain open. Superior Court employees should report to work as previously scheduled.

Superior Court seeks grand jury volunteers

Santa Barbara County Superior Court is actively seeking volunteers for the 20202021 Civil Grand Jury. To be considered for service on the grand jury, one must be a citizen of the United States, be 18 years of age or older, be of good character, have been a resident of Santa Barbara County for at least one year, and have never been convicted of a felony or malfeasance in office.

The Grand Jury conducts investigations and review of the departments and special districts of county and city government; involvement in fiscal or management audits; and the preparation of reports on related matters. Reports are then filed with recommendations for improvement of operations.

Service on the Grand Jury is for a period of one-year, and usually involves approximately 25 hours per week. Applications for the 2020-2021 Grand Jury can be obtained from the court’s Jury Services office in Santa Barbara at (805) 882-4530 or downloaded from the court’s website at sbcourts.org.

Obituary

Ray Anthony Martinez 12/15/1968 – 3/1/2020

On March 1, 2020, Ray Anthony Martinez left this earth to play in the most ultimate corn hole tournament in heaven.

During his six-year battle with cancer, Ray always maintained a positive attitude and fighting spirit.

Ray was born on Dec. 15, 1968 in Santa Barbara and lived his entire life in Carpinteria. He attended Canalino School, Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School excelling in football, soccer and track. Ray was an amazing athlete and continues to hold records to this day.

He played in the Alumni Football Game a few years ago which made his oncologist a bit nervous but Ray was determined and so excited to play.

Ray was an avid softball player. He loved the sport and all that came with it.

Ray played on many league teams and traveled all over to play in tournaments.

Las Vegas was a favorite of Ray’s with his 808 Maui Team. There was a no sliding rule, but he slid. He never forgot that.

He would even show up to his league games and play after having his threehour chemo infusion.

Then along came corn hole. Ray picked up the sport quickly and it soon became an everyday thing around our house.

This was his outlet, his distraction. He even joked about setting up boards in the hospital hallway during his recent hospital stay. That’s how much he loved his cornhole. Ray made so many friends through cornhole who soon became our

He would come home after tournaments and share so many fun stories with me. “Ray Ray’s in the house!!” That’s what he would yell every time he arrived at league night or any other cornhole event that was happening. He made sure everyone knew he was there and became very well known all over the U.S. for his famous foot shot.

Cornhole was everything to Ray. Ray married his high school sweetheart Janelle Zampese on Sept. 23, 1995 and they would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. Together they raised two beautiful daughters, Mackenzie Rae and Kylee Belle, who were the light of his life. He rarely missed a dance recital or school performance. He was very proud of his girls. Ray was a huge family man and loved family vacations. Bass Lake and Disneyland were his favorite places and he enjoyed long beach walks searching for sea glass.

Ray was a painting contractor by trade. He was extremely creative making amazing wood signs, etched glass, personal decals for friends and, of course, his cornhole boards. He took such pride in each set he made. If you had an idea, Ray could create it.

Ray was one of a kind and the mostloved person. He was a great husband, great father and great friend. He was such an inspiration and touched so many lives with his humor. Sharing his daily useless bull**** in hopes of giving everyone a good laugh—that was Ray. He fought the hardest battle with the best attitude and always with a smile. You would never know he was battling cancer.

Ray lived everyday like it was his last. “I want to be alive, but I don’t want to just be alive, I want to actually live”—Ray We love you Ray and know we will see you again someday. I hope you and Lucy are playing ball just like old times. “Get Outta Here Cancer.”

A celebration of Ray’s life is being planned. Details are still being sorted out and will be announced soon. Thank you all for your continued love and support shown to Ray and our family these last six years.

CVWD says tap water is safe to drink and there will be no water shortage.

CVWD says tap water is safe to drink

Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) released a statement on March 16 that drinking water in the district is safe and will not be interrupted. CVWD cited the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) statement that “Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual.”

California Drinking Water Regulators and the EPA have established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater, according to the CVWD statement.

“COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective,” stated CVWD. The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and

Calm down and follow the guidelines

May i start by saying that i don’t take this virus lightly, but, really? How disappointed was I to see the fine citizens of carpinteria follow the crowd and panic?

I’ve never seen such selfishness and outof-control behavior in my lifetime. People are grabbing everything—from water (we do have running water, people) to too much toilet paper—when if everyone takes the small amount they need, everyone gets their fair share. Has anyone considered our seniors who are in need?

Having been in the Sylmar earthquake disaster in 1971, where we had no running water at all, no electricity and just the food that we had to eat that was strewn all over the kitchen under appliances and furniture, the whole community helped each other and we made it work for weeks. There were no cell phones. The phone company set up phone booths on the corners of our streets. There were no stores open.

Please, everyone, calm down and just follow the guidelines that are as simple as washing your hands. Try not to yell at your neighbor in line at the stores and remember the employees are in the same boat as all of us. Be respectful. This will pass.

Not such a quaint inn

The concept of a quaint “Railroad Inn” of 20—and no more than 30—rooms, as introduced in 2017 by our city manager and city parks director, has now morphed into a high-end, 40-room luxury hotel over 36,000 square feet in size with two (!) pools.

Quaint inn it is not. carpinterians value our open space corridor south of the tracks; we value our existing 113 parking spaces at the city Beach Parking Lot and most of all, we value preservation of our small beach town character. For any city councilman to welcome a developer to place a large hotel on our city-owned parking lot and pave our open space corridor is incomprehensible.

Commercial avocado rancher Rick Shade advocated for increased communication between avocado and cannabis farms in Carpinteria Valley. “Get to know your neighbors,” he said.

California Avocado Commission holds avocado-cannabis relations forum

On March 10, the california Avocado commission (cAc) held a workshop at the carpinteria Lions club to discuss issues that arise from cannabis farming in proximity to avocado farming.

As a newly legal crop, cannabis farms operate under different rules than other ag commodities, including mandated testing for pesticide residues to the level of parts per billion. Pesticide applicators have been reluctant to spray near to cannabis farms due to the high value of the cannabis crop and concerns that any accidental migration of sprays, be it by insects or the wind, would render the cannabis crop un-sellable and the applicator potentially liable for the loss.

Avocado farmers, citrus farmers, cannabis farmers and pesticide applicators were represented at the forum, which included a presentation by rick Shade, a commercial avocado ranch manager and former cAc boardmember, who outlined the findings of an Ag Working Group that was assembled by the Santa Barbara county Agricultural commissioner’s Office in the fall of 2019. The group did not identify any single resolution to the issue from a regulatory standpoint. Given the federal illegality of cannabis, there are constraints on conducting research that could be key to establishing pesticideapplication protocols around cannabis.

Several dozen were in attendance on March 10, including cannabis farmers who stated they did not see an issue with spraying avocado trees, provided a buffer could be established around properties, and applicators alert farms before spraying. All cannabis grown in carpinteria Valley is grown in greenhouses, so farmers can close vents to prevent residues from entering greenhouses during applications.

Although no regulatory solution has been proposed, farmers indicated that cooperation and communication between farms could be the most viable solution in the short term.

County jails confirm two COVID-19 exposure cases

A total of 12 Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office county and medical contract employees were directed to self-isolate in their homes after they were exposed to a person who later tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office released on March 17.

On Thursday, March 12, a civilian Sheriff’s employee who works in a jail control room, and had recently traveled to Europe, became ill at work. This employee, who is a resident of San Luis Obispo County, sought medical attention and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

Volunteering for a flavorful life CVN

missioN possibLE LAUREN GRAF Tom Beland is no stranger to lending a hand to others, especially when it involves lessening hunger in our community. He has stretched his service across Carpinteria, from the Sealwatch to the Carpinteria Birdwatchers to the Carpinteria homeless count, but his greatest passion is aiding groups throughout the city without access to nutritious, regular meals.

Beland is a dedicated volunteer with Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, giving his time to multiple programs. In Teens Love Cooking, Beland leads cooking classes that teach young Carpinterians how to make nutritious meals. With the Brown Bag Program, Beland helps feed low-income seniors, and during the summer Picnic in the Parks program, he provides meals to students who otherwise don’t have access to nutrition through school lunches.

Beland discovered his mission of helping Carpinterians facing hunger when he heard of the term “food insecurity” several years ago. Food insecurity, as described on the Foodbank’s website, is “when the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire acceptable food in socially acceptable ways, is limited and uncertain.” Beland said that he researched the term to learn more and has been an advocate to help address this issue in his community ever since.

Beland shared his thoughts on what volunteering means to him and how he’s used his love for food to help alleviate hunger in Carpinteria.

When and why did you begin volunteering in Carpinteria?

I retired in 2017. One of my reasons for retiring was so that I could participate as a volunteer in my community.

I began volunteering for the Foodbank after the Thomas Fire and mudslides. I volunteered to distribute food from St. Joseph School and there I met Carrie Wanek. Carrie, who is also from Carpinteria, works at the Foodbank and she told me about Picnic in the Park in Carpinteria. I later discovered the Teens Love Cooking and Brown Bag programs.

What inspired you to bring cooking and nutrition to our middle schoolers?

At Teens Love Cooking I am part of a small team that teaches cooking skills to teens at the middle school, Boys & Girls Club and Girls Inc. We also teach lessons on nutrition, where our food comes from, different sources of protein and more.

What inspired me is my love of cooking and being able to bring that enjoyment to young people. I also believe that teaching about nutrition, differences between organic foods and non-organic foods, and other different sources of proteins, are valuable life lessons.

Can you explain more about the Picnic in the Park and Brown Bag programs?

Santa Barbara Foodbank’s Picnic in the Park offers free healthy meals to all children, and similar to school, a lunch time for kids to get together and play together.

I, along with many other volunteers, handed out lunches at the Carpinteria Library Multi-Purpose Room. Blanca Ramirez, the lead librarian, along with

Volunteer Tom Beland teaches cooking skills to Carpinteria teenagers for the Foodbank. the other library staff were incredibly supportive and helpful. The Brown Bag program provides food two Tuesdays a month to local senior citizens to help supplement their food budget. I am one of the newest among the many caring and compassionate volunteers.

What has been one of your most valuable experiences volunteering in Carpinteria?

During these volunteer experiences, I feel that I have become part of an incredibly caring and fun community. Besides the intrinsic value of being a volunteer, I am also rewarded by meeting and becoming friends with many like-minded, caring and compassionate residents of Carpinteria.

Do you have anything else to mention about volunteering in Carpinteria?

Carpinteria is a small community compared to my last residence of Boston, Massachusetts. Yet I have met so many residents of Carpinteria that volunteer in one or more organizations. I would think the percentage of volunteers in our community is higher than most. I am very fortunate to be part of this community.

What are some of the services that the Foodbank has been offering concerning COVID-19 response planning?

High School continues instruction online

With the duration of school closures remaining unknown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carpinteria Unified School District campuses have closed for the week ahead of spring break and the high school has switched to online instruction.

California Governor Gavin Newsome said Tuesday, March 17, that schools may remain closed until summer. While no firm announcement has been made, a prolonged period of school closures is a real possibility.

Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo said Monday, March 16, that CHS “was lucky to have issued Chromebooks (laptop computers) to all high school students at the start of the year, and we will be providing assignments through this week.” Staff have inventoried the laptops, Cornejo said, and have replaced the faulty ones. Approximately 23 students at the school lack home internet connections, and they have been provided “hotspots” via cell-phone data plans that enable internet access.

Many online instructional sites, including Scholastic and Google Classroom, have offered their materials at no charge to students and instructors to maintain academic continuity through this unprecedented time. Cornejo said of the coming weeks and months, “We’re taking it one week at a time.”

Students in Dual Language Immersion classes received homework packets ahead of the school closure this week, as well as access codes for interactive learning websites. Aliso Elementary School Principal Dr. Michelle Fox has also sent out online resources via the Parent Square messaging service to school families.

CHS senior Lexi Persoon said of the online classes, “I do OK with it,” but she acknowledged that “trying to figure out how to approach (online lessons) is different than in class.” Having had experience with online courses through concurrent enrollment at Santa Barbara City College, Persoon has familiarity with that style of learning. However, she says in online classes, “you don’t get student interaction—there’s a collaborative element (to the in-class environment) that’s important.”

Regarding the current recommendation for social distancing, Persoon said, “Truthfully, it’s been hard, you want to stay in contact.” She also said that she and many of her friends have been busy babysitting with so many children in the community home from school and parents still needing to work. In recent days, she has continued her lifeguarding position at Carpinteria Community Pool.

While COVID-19 does not appear to be a huge threat to youth, they must still participate in social distancing to prevent spreading the disease to others who may be more vulnerable.

Looking ahead, whether taking online courses or resuming studies in a traditional classroom, Persoon, an accomplished swimmer, water polo and tennis player, looks to continue her studies at Santa Barbara City College after high school graduation this June. She also plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn a degree and teaching credential.

“We have talked,” Persoon said of some of her fellow high school students, “and expect it to be around June until (the pandemic) dies down.” The toll of this time remains unknowable, and another consequence may be the class of 2020 missing out on the traditional celebrations that mark the important achievement of graduation: “Some of my friends in my grade are upset because if that is true, then senior events would be cancelled like prom or Senior Week.”

The Howard School zooms in

When their school campus closed to slow down the spread of COVID-19, Howard School faculty immediately began working to transition their curriculum to an online model that will sustain student academic progress until in-person classes can resume. Delgado’s keeps it in the family for 55 years CVN

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P The story of Delgado’s, the traditional Mexican restaurant on Carpinteria Avenue, goes back four generations to when the Delgado’s Grocery and gas station opened in the 1950s near the current building, just down the street.

“That was my (maternal) grandparents, the Delgado family,” said Delgado’s owner Christina Castellanos. “They opened the gas station, and in those days it was a combination of a gas station and little meat market and grocery store. You could get it all in one spot.”

Later, when her mother married her father, Arturo Castellanos, Delgado’s restaurant opened along with a tortilla shop in the back. “That’s why we have high ceilings (in the restaurant) because of the tortilla factory.” With few tortilla companies around back then, the combined effort of two different businesses helped fill a demand, and they sold tortillas across the tri-county region. Delgado’s still makes corn tortillas, cooking and grinding the corn for masa to sell to the public and other bakeries in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. The first meal and tortillas were served 55 years ago, in 1965, and Castellanos’ 82-year-old father still delivers masa and comes by to check in every day.

Castellanos said it’s hard to nail down the best business advice she’s received working in the restaurant business for 20 years, but the work ethic she witnessed as

a child left an indelible impression: “My biggest (mentors) would be my parents, for sure,” Castellanos said. “I have the pleasure of working with my dad every day. He is a hard worker.” She encourages others to be hands on in their business and engage with customers and employees. She says it’s the caring environment that sets Delgado’s apart. “We spend more time working than at home. I really consider it a second family.”

The best advice Castellanos can give is to understand every aspect of the business. “When I walked in here, I wanted to know how to cook the corn, grind the corn, run the dishwasher, waitress, bartend,” she said. “Never put yourself above what everyone else does. Employees understand you better when you’re willing to do what they do every day.” She also recommends working towards goals, writing them down and then finding new goals when you reach them. Delgado’s key to success is the made-from-scratch, fresh and local ingredients to make traditional meals and consistency while bringing in new options.

Customers still appreciate the ground beef tacos and chili verde they’ve had on the menu since day one. But now Delgado’s offers healthier options too that are also popular with customers. Delgado’s authentic beans have lard and “taste delicious” but are not for everybody, however the restaurant offers a lighter version of black and pinto beans made without the extra fat. Castellano’s trade secret is simple: hire great people. She says experience isn’t as important as character. She likes to give everyone an opportunity, feeling anyone is trainable. “You can tell a

Their kindness, desires, honesty…I kind of go off my gut.” She credits “key players” as a large part of the foundation of Delgado’s success. “I have cooks and waitresses that have been here longer than I have and are willing to do anything for the benefit of the restaurant,” she said.

“Always remember to reward (your staff) for those things.” The advice she would give her younger self is to be pre-

pared for a lot of hard work but a lot of rewards. And of course, be grateful and gracious: “Thank you to all our dedicated customers and employees. It’s wonderful knowing you!” said Castellanos.

Foodbank and local schools continue and expand food distribution

As the pandemic brings global uncertainty, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is responding locally with direct action in the form of expanded food distribution. The nonprofit has begun providing free, healthy groceries and fresh produce, with no pre-registration or documentation required. Health-safety protocols are in place at each distribution site with gloves and sanitizer for all, and social distancing maintained to ensure the safety and cleanliness of each site.

Carpinteria Unified School District will continue to distribute sack lunches through Friday, March 20, to students who qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Sack lunches will be distributed to children 18-years-old and under at all four CUSD sites: Canalino/Canalino Family School, Aliso Elementary, Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Friday, March 20.

School staff will follow the mandate of social distancing and maintain a minimum of six feet of space between people. At Canalino, lunches will be on tables under a white pop-up tent, and participants are asked to pull forward in vehicles, and take the number of lunches that are required for the children present, and then move along. In the interest of social distancing, eating at the campuses will not be allowed.

The City of Carpinteria has decided to postpone its Annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day out of an abundance of caution related to the spread of coronavirus.

Household goods and waste will NOT be accepted at City Hall on April 11 and will be rescheduled to a new undetermined date. As soon as a replacement date for the event is decided upon, the City will inform residents.

Members of the Carpinteria Unified School District Board met on Tuesday, March 10, to inform community members of their plans to combat the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus, also known as coronavirus. Boardmembers also witnessed the presentation of the California Distinguished School Award to Aliso Elementary School and heard concern over the termination of a Carpinteria High School physics teacher.

Superintendent Diana Rigby read a statement that the school district disseminated to staff and families about the preventative measures that are being taken.

“We are meeting regularly with the County Public Health Office of Emergency Management and county schools to receive guidance and information on the district response to COVID-19,” Rigby said. Rigby listed several precautions the district has already implemented to prevent the spread of the virus, including excused student absences, available make up work, and employee paid sick leave.

California and has terminated student outreach to nursing homes. Rigby emphasized that the district will continue to communicate directly to school communities to keep everyone informed as new information develops.

“The good news I have, as of today, is that there are still no identified cases of the coronavirus in Santa Barbara County,” said Rigby, who also acknowledged that there are planned measures that will take place if there are community transmission cases of COVID-19 but no individuals of the school test positive.

The district will “continue to maintain regular communication with staff and families and remind students, family and staff to stay home if they have any fever, respiratory infection, or symptoms of respiratory infection,” according to the district’s statement. In consultation with the county’s Public Health Office, CUSD administrators will determine if there will be school closures. The length of closure and readmission criteria after reopening schools will be based on risk. CUSD is developing a plan for online learning for their high school students only.

Aliso named CA Distinguished School

Aliso Elementary School’s principal, Dr. Michelle Fox, presented Aliso’s California Distinguished School Award at Tuesday night’s Carpinteria unified School District board meeting. “I’m here to thank you for recognizing us tonight at Aliso. We’re very happy and proud to be recognized as a Distinguished School,” said Fox. The school received the award based on their ability to start closing the achieve-

ment gap. Fox credited the school’s exploration lab as one of the programs that aids in closing the gap, as it provides students with hands-on activities that promote creative and critical thinking skills. The school has also encouraged more parent involvement, organizing family picnics and other activities that encourage parent engagement. “We’re making little gains and it’s showing,” said Fox.

Students voice concern over teacher termination

During the public comment portion of the Carpineria Unified School District meeting on March 10, two Carpinteria High School seniors expressed their frustration over the termination of physics teacher Patrick Chaplin. Elitza Gonzalez complained that his position was taken away “for no given reason,” leaving Chaplin without a job for the following year and denying the students a “more than qualified physics teacher.” Chaplin began teaching at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year and has developed a close relationship with many students.

students in the classroom, to ask how their days are going and what they do outside of school,” Gonzalez said. She expressed concern that the sudden removal of his job puts the students very much at risk. Senior Victoria Gonzalez commented that by removing Chaplin from his position, students will not have the opportunity to take “rigorous and challenging” classes that would give them a competitive advantage in the college application process.

“We feel like this termination wasn’t done in the best interest of the students,” said Victoria Gonzalez.

Elementary school registration postponed

With uncertainty about the length of school closure, Carpinteria Unified School District has announced to incoming kindergarten families that kindergarten registration will resume when staff returns to campus.

CUSD has also postponed lotteries for Carpinteria Family School and Dual Language Immersion at Canalino Elementary School.

Carpinteria Unified School District has announced that all district schools will close from March 16 to 27.

In a letter to staff and family Diana Rigby, CUSD superintendent stated that in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the district will close all schools beginning on Monday, March 13, through spring break, which ends on March 27.

All schools in Santa Barbara County will be closed during this time to contain the spread of the virus. A confirmed date to reopen schools will be announced by Friday, March 27 in consultation with Santa Barbara County Public Health and Santa Barbara County Schools.

Carpinteria High School teachers will provide online lessons for their students who will have district-issued laptops.

Elementary and middle school students will be expected to read and write daily, practice math facts and access district online learning programs through the district website.

Rigby thanked staff and families for their understanding and patience

“during this challenging time.” “This is a very dynamic and fluid situation and we have changed our actions based on the most current information,” she stated. “Yesterday, we cancelled all nonclassroom activities including meetings, evening programs, athletic practices and competitions which will remain in effect until May 1.

“The CUSD District Leadership Team has been working closely with the Santa Barbara County Schools Office, Santa Barbara County Public Health, and Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management to determine the best course of action to promote safety and health among our staff, students, and families.”

The district “highly” recommends that students and families stay home during the closure and avoid non-essential travel. Rigby also noted that students or staff who have a travel history over the course of the last 14 days in an area identified as Level 3 Travel Health Notice will be excluded from school.

Superintendent provides coronavirus update On Monday, March 16, CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby sent an online update to parents and students about the impacts of school closures on food distribution during the public health emergency.

“We are committed to feeding our students during the school closure March 17-20,” Rigby wrote, providing details for food distribution, and noting that 56 percent of CUSD students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

The district will provide sack lunches to children 18-years-old and younger that may be picked up between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Aliso, Canalino, Carpinteria Middle and Carpinteria High schools.

Parents, guardians and/or caregivers should plan to drive their children to any of these school sites and pick up the sack lunches from their cars curbside. Alternately, families can walk to the schools but are asked to maintain social distance

Measure U funding allocation approved

The CUSD Board of Education meeting on March 10 culminated with the Board’s unanimous approval of allocations, totaling $153,419.96, for expenses related to legal fees and architectural services, among other items. They also unanimously approved the purchase of furnishings for Canalino Modernization Project Phase 3—part of the Measure U construction project—to provide classroom furniture. Measure U construction to modernize Canalino’s campus is 20 percent complete and is expected to reach full completion in early June.

Caltrans offers scholarships

Caltrans District 5 and the California Transportation Foundation are offering five $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors within the five-county district (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties). The scholarship program is designed for college-bound senior high school students who are planning to pursue a career in transportation and live within the district.

Mural painting day in memory of Ray Cole postponed

A mural-painting day at the Boathouse building on Ash Avenue scheduled for Saturday, March 21, has been postponed to honor social distancing protocols in place in response to the threat of the COVID-19 virus.

The nonprofit organization Muralism organized the project honoring the work of the late Carpinteria artist Ray Cole, and the mural will depict one of his works with an added undersea scene to provide an interactive element for beachgoers of the kelp forest environment just offshore. Many of Cole’s watercolors are collected in his book, “The Delights of Carpinteria.”

Ernie Merlán, CEO and founder of Muralism, noted that projects on the scale of the Boathouse mural usually cost between $40,000 and $50,000, but his organization will complete the mural for $15,000 with $5,000 donated from Carpinteria Beautiful, $5,000 from the city of Carpinteria and $5,000 from the Cole family.

Muralism has a goal to paint 100 murals before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Founded to connect young people with special needs to meaningful work and community interaction, Muralism employs a paint-by-numbers technique to produce its murals.

“Paid artists with special needs cover sidewalks, pressure wash and prime the wall, panels or canvas,” Merlán said.

“Our team then draws a paint-by-numbers image in charcoal across the wall, panels or canvas. The whole community, especially organizations for those with special needs, are invited to participate in the fun-filled community paint party.”

The Rotary Club recently honored five Carpinteria High School students who were selected to go to Rotary Leadership Training. Students applied for the leadership training positions and finalists were selected for their activities and successes in school characterized by the Rotary motto of “service above self.”

Rotary youth organizer Beth Cox said, “These students will be inspired and return with new skills that will serve them well in school, their careers and with the community organizations that they will serve in the future.”

C.A.R.E.4Paws shares mission with Rotary

Chris Harris of C.A.R.E.4Paws—a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit that works to reduce pet overpopulation and improve quality of life for pets and pet owners in need—addressed the Rotary Club and shared the free services available to dog and cat owners on the South Coast. At 80-years-old, Anita Pulido finishes 25th consecutive LA Marathon

Local marathon runner, Anita Pulido, just keeps chugging along. Last Sunday, March 8, the 80-year-old grandmother finished the Los Angeles Marathon for the 25th year in a row. As part of a massive gathering of some 27,000 runners, Pulido started at Dodger Stadium and ran all the way down to Santa Monica where she completed the race at the famous pier.

“If you’ve ever been a runner, that’s the frosting on the cake,” said Pulido of the challenge.

Pulido, who has been a runner for nearly 45 years, has always been active, running in between games of softball and rounds of golf. She competed in shorter distances, such as 5Ks and 10Ks, and participated in the first women’s run in Santa Barbara. Back in 1996 at the age of 55, she was encouraged by her husband Alex, also her running partner, and a friend at Cal State Los Angeles to take a shot at the marathon. At the time, Pulido had only jogged six-mile intervals and was hesitant to attempt to run a marathon. Five days a week she used the Carpinteria Bluffs, Rincon Beach, Seacliff and the Pacific Coast Highway as training grounds to prepare.

When the day came, all the hard work Pulido had put in paid off as she finished the LA Marathon. “I wanted to cry, it was so overwhelming,” said Pulido. All that running developed into a hobby and Pulido continued to run through Seacliff.

She would often stop to use the bathroom at the fire station, and later thank the firefighters by bringing them a box of candy.

The habit led to one marathon after another for over two decades. “I’ve been blessed with good health. When you’re running and you don’t have pain and you love

what you’re doing, why wouldn’t you (continue),” said Pulido.

Over the years, she has been accompanied at times by her daughters Laura, Leslie and Lorraine in the annual LA event. For the past seven years, she’s been walking up the Franklin Trail with a small group of women. She also runs down it four days a week and on the fifth day does her regular regimen, the Seacliff route. But this past December her string of good health came to an end when she popped her knee at Seacliff, tearing her meniscus.

Although she lost some training time, with the help of Dr. Eduardo Clark at Samsun Clinic and the folks at Via Real Physical Therapy, Pulido was able to get back on course. This year was special for Pulido too, because it’s the first year she competed as an octogenarian with four other women also 80 and older. Pulido’s daughter Lorraine also joined this year for the first time since 2015, and coaxed her husband Brandon Bono to enter the race for the very first time.

The trio completed the race. “This year, I finally feel like a real runner, she (Pulido) always used to tell me, ‘Just don’t worry about that (pain), and have faith and trust in yourself and your body,” said Lorraine. Bono was also richer for the experience.

“All of the people along the course are so unselfish; they hand out water and bananas and they might not even know anybody in the race,” said Bono. “You see the good in humans, it’s something you don’t see every day.” And, it’s a good bet he’ll see his mother-in-law out there again next year.

March 11 - The Carpinteria High School track and field team won their league opener in Santa Paula, with the boys beating the Cardinals, 66-60, and the girls also taking Santa Paula, 76.5 to 49.5.

Vincent Rinaldi won the 100 and 200 meters, equaling his seasonal best of 11.31 seconds in the 100. Sophomore Mateo Handall won the 400 with a Personal Record of 52.83. Both relay teams were victorious, as the 4 x 100 team ran a 45.91; and in the 4 x 400 relay, Victor Rinaldi was able to come from behind on the anchor leg to pull out the win.

Fatima Cervantes won two events and was part of the winning 4 x 400 relay team.

She ran 56.51 in the 300 hurdles and high jumped 4 feet, 10 inches for the girls. Mercey Torres ran a Personal Record of 66.39 to win the 400 and was also on the 4 x 400 team for the girls. Caton Pettine won the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.72.

The Carpinteria Education Foundation Orchard 2 Ocean 5- and 10K run might have been cancelled, but Carter Cox still ran the route, determined to beat his time of 20 minutes from last year’s race. This year, he also ran in memory of his Uncle Jolly and his good friend Robin’s Cassidy, completing the route in 18:26 minutes.

Sealwatch volunteeers began their docent and protection work on Jan. 1. This year, Sealwatch continues with both continuous blufftop and low-tide beach monitoring. Volunteers are needed, especially to cover any part of low-tide events.

In 1988, wildlife biologist Dana Seagars testified before Carpinteria’s Planning Commission and City Council to the effect that unless protective measures were taken the harbor seals could depart.

Although he was observing over 200 seals at night, daytime counts and pup numbers were very low. After the beach closure ordinance began, Sealwatch recorded pup numbers in the first few years under 30. Numbers of adults and pups gradually increased and several years ago there were occasional counts of over 400 adults and 100 pups. About seven years ago a decline occurred, and the past five years have seen few adult counts much over 200 or pup counts over 60. Reasons are difficult to pin down, but Sealwatch is examining various measures which may increase protection of the seals and their habitat.

Workers on the pier were the cause of two scares, as were trespassers on the beach.

Volunteers have been urged to care for everyone’s safety, so you may see fewer docents at the overlook, and when there, please keep the recommended six-foot distance.

It’s wonderful to see people from all over the world, but obviously any public circulation increases the risk of COVID-19’s spread. Volunteers who do elect to come may spend more time at the beach ends and less at the overlook.

City cancels Planning Commission meeting

The city of Carpinteria has postponed the Planning Commission meeting scheduled for March 16 until further notice.

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce has postponed all events scheduled for March through mid-April including the Legislative Breakfast with Congressman Carbajal & Highway Update from Kirsten Ayars (March 20); the Fundraiser Trip Preview for Athens and the Greek Isles (March 24); and the State of the Community and Economic Luncheon (April 3). New dates for these events will be announced later.

Carp Lumber postpones Spring Fling

Carpinteria Valley Lumber & Garden Center has postponed its Spring Fling scheduled for March 20 to May 23. The Garden Center will still be offering 20 percent off on Friday, March 20.

Earl Warren Showgrounds announced Thursday, March 12, that all of its public events through March 31 had been cancelled as called for by the executive order issued by the Governor’s Office.

Carpinteria Children’s Project has canceled their All In for Carp Kids breakfast to support CCP programs scheduled for Friday, March 13.

Cate cancels all campus gatherings

The Cate School has postponed the Celebration of Life planned for Gwendolyn Pierce on Saturday, March 21, along with all other gatherings on campus for at least the next month.

Rotary postpones Talent Show

Carpinteria Rotary Club has postponed the Talent Showcase scheduled for Saturday, March 14.

“We met today and with great regret, we officially decided to postpone the Carpinteria Talent Showcase to safeguard our performers, our audience and all the volunteers who make it such a great show,” said Roland Rotz of Carpinteria Rotary Club.

Santa Barbara International Orchid Show cancelled

The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show has been cancelled. The threeday event scheduled for the weekend of March 13-15 was cancelled “with great regret and concern for public safety,” stated a release from event organizers.

Compassionate Care of Carpinteria cancels breakfast

Compassionate Care of Carpinteria has canceled its community breakfast scheduled for Monday, March 16.

“The safety of our community, clients, and patients are our top priority,” stated Cheryll Puyot of CCP and Hospice of Santa Barbara. “Proactively, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to cancel our Compassionate Care of Carpinteria Community Breakfast on Monday, March 16, at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, and will plan on rescheduling it in the future.”

Carpinteria Education Foundation cancels O2O

Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) has canceled the 2020 Orchard to Ocean (O2O) 5k/10k scheduled for March 14. O2O will provide refunds to those who have registered as well as to sponsors. Participants will receive an email detailing the refund process.

In a letter to the community, CEF expressed that they were “deeply saddened, however, the safety and well-being of our guests and our community is our top priority.”
