Sheriff’s detectives assigned to the Special Investigations and Criminal Investigations bureaus conducted a two-day undercover operation in the City of Goleta on Thursday and Friday night, Sept. 20 and 21. The purpose of the operation was to curb criminal activity related to purchasing sex, and the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Santa Barbara Police Department and the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office during the operation. Seventeen men—ranging from 19 to 78 years of age, including two Carpinteria men, 45-year-old Jeffrey Goddard and 30-year-old Cassidy King—were arrested for solicitation of prostitution. For this particular sting, investigators placed an online ad on several websites known for online prostitutionrelated advertisements. The advertisement announced the availability of a female willing to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money. Once the ads were placed, an undercover detective negotiated a sexual act for an amount of money. After the negotiation, the undercover detective gave the location of a hotel meeting place and when the men arrived, they were arrested for solicitation of prostitution. All subjects arrested were cooperative when contacted by arresting detectives.

Limon and de Witte to keynote Chamber Legislative Breakfast

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce will host a Legislative Breakfast on Friday, Oct. 5, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Rincon Beach Club. Assemblymember Monique Limon and 2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year Mandi de Witte will speak at the event.

Limon will present a legislative update for small businesses, as well as California’s response to recent natural disasters. De Witte, who teaches at Carpinteria High School, will address the state of education.

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber Legislative Breakfast is an information-packed program, designed to brief the business community on the latest business trends, legislative updates, economic development and relevant issues that affect the community. Red Cross asks for blood and platelet donations

As the American Red Cross responds to Hurricane Florence, providing food, shelter and comfort to those affected, the organization asks that individuals outside the affected areas give blood or platelets to care for patients in the storm’s path and across the country. Hurricane Florence’s wrath left catastrophic damage behind and also took a toll on blood and platelet donations. Nearly 200 Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast were forced to cancel, resulting in more than 5,200 uncollected blood and platelet donations. St. Joseph Conference 5K Walk Run is a success

The first annual Friends of the Poor 5K Walk Run was hosted by the St. Joseph Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday, Sept.

22. Sixty-two walkers and volunteers participated in the fundraiser, which was conducted locally as part of a nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk. The walkers began at St. Joseph Catholic Church and walked through Carpinteria to State Beach before returning to St. Joseph Church. All donations to the very successful fundraiser will remain in the Carpinteria area to assist the needy of Carpinteria and Summerland.

The St. Joseph Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which began in March of 2017, has been able to help more than 49 families get through temporary periods of need. During the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow, the St. Joseph Conference was able to help 14 families with rent, utilities, food and shelter.

Monica Robarge is the first woman runner to finish the Friends of the Poor 5K Walk Run with an unofficial time of 29 minutes and 20 seconds.

Letters You be the judge

A sales tax is a rate, and a rate should be judged from two perspectives.

First, does the rate result in collecting the amount of money needed? In the case of Measure X, we can be sure that the rate increase of 1.25 percent will result in the City meeting its budget because we can estimate very closely the amount of taxable sales, and we know very well what our shortfall is.

The second perspective is how much will it cost each of us? Of course, our individual spending varies substantially based on income, stage of life, size of family and so forth, but let’s run some numbers. If you spend an average of

$200 a month on taxable purchases made inside the city of Carpinteria, passing this tax measure will cost you personally $30 per year total. (Recall that groceries are mostly tax-free.) The increase on a $30 dinner would be 38 cents. A visitor buying clothes worth $100 in one of our shops will be paying $1.25 more than previously.

These are relatively minor amounts, considering that we are talking about repaving the streets, keeping the library open, and so forth.

City Council rejects Faith Lutheran Church subdivision development plans By claire Burke

During the Sept. 24 City Council meeting, councilmembers made what they called a very difficult decision, to unanimously reject the permit approval request by the Faith Lutheran Church for residential development. The decision was made against the staff recommendation to approve the permit. Representatives connected to and in favor of the project, and many members of the public standing against the project, took the opportunity to comment on Monday evening.

The proposed development plans would develop eight separate lots to create six new residences on the existing 2.7acre Faith Lutheran property. The church and parsonage would remain and space for the six new lots would be created by reconfiguring the parcel.

Architect Scott Ellinwood has worked with the city, church and community for the past two years to create something that worked for everyone involved. He stated: “I think you can tell from the staff report how we have taken input from our neighbors and concerned citizens to adjust our design to minimize its impact on the neighbors and respond to their concerns.”

However, despite adjustments to the plans, community members rallied over one main issue during the meeting: shared driveways. Community member Barry Horwitz highlighted this issue saying, “The use of shared driveways is prob-

ably the biggest problem. It’s essentially creating a PUD (planned unit development) in a single-family neighborhood.”

This, in combination with more population density in the neighborhood and the number of cars per household caused the most public outcry.

In his final comments before the vote, Councilmember Brad Stein stated, “That driveway is private property, and who’s going to be maintaining it? You’re going to have three houses on each drive way, you’re going to have a battle there… I have a lot of friends at Faith Lutheran Church and I know that it is to help maintain their mission, but if we are the guardians of public policy and what we want to see in Carpinteria and we are looking at the small-town feel and neighborhood compatibility, this does not fit.”

By choosing not to adopt the resolution, the councilmembers have given the applicants the option to modify the project and return to a future City Council meeting with updated plans for consideration.

after the architectural review Board and Planning commission had recommended the Faith lutheran church subdivision and development plans, the project was not approved by city council on Sept. 24. The council advised the church to reduce the density of the development and provide more off-street parking for the new residences and to return to council for another review. in Carpinteria who are without the ability to obtain shelter. This declaration is the first step needed in order to partake in California’s new Homelessness Emergency Aid Program (HEAP).

The $500 million grants distributed from HEAP are flexible block grants awarded to local jurisdictions. To be eligible, jurisdictions must first declare a Shelter Crisis, meaning that there is a “significant number of persons without the ability to obtain shelter, resulting in a threat to their health and safety.”

These funds are different than other government-distributed funds, as the city has more discretion with HEAP on how to best help the community with the money.

Pedestrian safety improvements near location of future skate park

With 5-0 approval, the City Council voted to enter into an agreement with MNS Engineers to provide consultant services for the Carpinteria Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project.

This project will attend to sidewalks, bike access and walkways along the eastern end of Carpinteria Avenue.

These improvements will be in and around the site of the future Skate Park

and both the councilmembers and the Carpinteria Skate Foundation are in favor of these changes. Peter Bonning of the Skate Foundation stated, “We are in support of the said changes to the area, we support this very much and hope that it goes through. The park will be built thanks to you guys and the support of the community, but it isn’t built yet, we still need you.”

Praise and a raise for City Manager

At the Sept. 24, City Council Meeting, councilmembers voted unanimously to amend the City Manager Employment Agreement and allow for a merit-based raise in July 2019.

Both councilmembers and staff offered glowing praise of City Manager Dave Durflinger who has been City Manager since July of 2001. Councilmember Gregg Carty stated, “I go to functions and I hear Dave speak and it just makes me so proud to be a Carpinterian that we have a man like this representing our city. He’s so involved in the community, and he’s part of the community… We have an awesome man here in our city and he’s our City Manager. And, I thank you Dave.”

X Factor: 1.25 percent sales tax could keep Carpinteria in the black

In the upcoming Nov. 6 election Carpinterians will vote on Measure X, a proposal to establish a 1.25 percent local sales tax. The proposed measure would bring the total sales tax from 7.75 percent to 9 percent on taxable goods purchased within the City of Carpinteria. Most groceries, prescription medicines and food stamp purchases are not taxed.

If passed, Measure X is expected to generate $2.3 million annually for critical City services, including road and park maintenance projects, disaster response and public service programs.

Because Measure X is a City tax, 100 percent of the revenue from the additional 1.25 percent increase would be used within the City of Carpinteria. Based on current tax revenue, about 50 percent of Measure X funds would come from visitors and tourists.

Over the years, inflation has increased at a faster rate than the City’s revenue growth, resulting in a projected budget deficit. An independent Five Year Financial Plan found that the City of Carpinteria faces a $1.5 million annual shortfall for street and sidewalk repairs, and park maintenance. Additionally, the City anticipates nearly $1 million in increased costs for sustaining the Carpinteria Library, law enforcement, disaster preparedness and emergency response, Americans with

Disabilities Act requirements, clean water mandates, as well as community service and youth programs, including programs that address homelessness and benefit seniors and low income Carpinterians.

Many miles of aging Carpinteria roads now require extensive repair work. Park maintenance and water costs have also increased. The City Council has used reserve funds to cover necessary roadway repairs in the past, but according to the study, that level of reserve spending is unsustainable. Continuing to draw down reserves could limit essential services and the City’s ability to respond to emergencies and natural disasters.

In response to these negative findings, and based on the recommendations of City staff, Carpinteria’s City Council unanimously voted to place Measure X on the ballot as a means of addressing the impending deficit and maintaining the City’s financial health.

Over 150 California cities have sales tax rates at or above 9 percent, including Agoura Hills at 9.25 percent, Burbank at 9.5 percent, Calabasas at 9.5 percent, Long Beach at 10.25 percent and Santa Cruz at 9 percent.

If Measure X passes in the Nov. 6 election, the sales tax would go into effect in April, 2019.

The final element of fruit tree care is pruning for structure and fruit production. The best time to prune is winter, when leaves drop and the tree’s structure is apparent. Use sharp pruners or a saw to make clean cuts flush with the trunk or branch. First, prune all dead wood, as well as any sprouts emerging from the base of the tree. Then, thin out the canopy, removing branches growing into the center of the canopy and any straight shoots from main branches. Finally, trim the entire canopy by cutting back every branch by one-third, making sure to make cuts just before a bud (which will become next spring’s fruit-bearing branches).

PHotos By JoHn Parsons Earlier this year, John Parsons met Muriel Hemingway at a book talk. A conversation with her led Parsons to take a trip to Havana where Muriel’s grandfather Ernest Hemingway penned much of his most famous novel, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

But Parsons didn’t want to be just a tourist. While watching the World Series Championship he became inspired and began to collect baseball gloves and balls to give away to children on the island. His goal was simple: fill one 50 lbs suitcase with donations. Parsons took regular trips to local thrift stores, such as St. Josephs. Friends turned up to give also, like Andres Nuno, Charlie Dennis, Dan Clayton, Phil King and Mrs. Blum, among others.

“Once friends in Carpinteria found out about my mission, they started donating gloves,” said Parsons, “dropping them off on my front porch, calling me and asking what else they can do. I’m proud to be part of this caring community.”

Soon Parsons had 40 baseball gloves and 40 balls. He loaded his luggage (weighing in at 49.9 lbs) and headed to Havana.

Once in Havana, Parsons gave out the baseball gear to kids in need. “Some of the kids didn’t have shoes or didn’t go to school,” said Parsons. “I traveled through some very poor areas of Havana during the day with my backpack filled with six or seven gloves and balls at a time to hand out. My heart was filled with joy while I walked back to my hotel three miles away.”

Parson will be travelling to Cuba in January on a similar mission, but this time he’ll be travelling with others who will also bring baseball gloves and balls, as well as gifts geared for girls. For more information, contact John Parsons at (805) 455-3508 or jpcarpinteria01@gmail.com/.

Here’s the skinny on one of the biggest free festivals in California (and check out next week’s CVN for the 411 on music—75 acts on four stages). retro t-shirt design Paul Souza at STP Screen Printing is re-releasing an avocado design he created 25 years ago that is now a cult classic. A limited supply of the retro design will be available on Friday night. Geared towards locals, the alternative t-shirt design is sanctioned by Avofest but will be available in short supply. Souza will be printing less than 500 tees.

The official beer of the California Avocado Festival is a crushable amber ale from Rincon Brewery, tapping in at 4.6 percent alcohol by volume. Avo Ale is brewed with toasted avocado pits, select German malts and domestic Tettnanger hops, featuring a light body with upfront graininess, flavors of toasted bread and a slight nuttiness from the toasted avocado pits.

Restrained hopping rates lend just enough bitterness to balance Avo Ale’s malty backbone and leave pleasant notes of earth and spice on the finish. Avo Ale can be found on draft at all festival booths and available on draft or in limited edition commemorative bottles at Rincon Brewery.

Over 30 lbs of avocado pits were collected and roasted to make two batches of avo ale for avofest.

The Avofest has opened the ballots this year for the first time ever to determine which eatery in avocado country deserves the coveted title of most “Avo-licious.” The voting opened the night of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Culinary Crawl and will remain open until the week of Avofest. The winner will be announced at the festival.

The cilantro provides an herbal back-beat (my apologies for mixing metaphors). If you are not a fan of cilantro, substitute Italian parsley.

This recipe doubles with no problem so it is perfect for sharing with friends and family as a side dish at pot luck gatherings. It also makes a colorful and tasty lunch when served with thick slices of fresh yellow and red tomatoes.

Ingredients:

3 cups shell pasta (Conchiglie) 1 ripe medium avocado ¼ cup cilantro (chopped fine) 1 ½ tablespoons fresh lime juice 3 tablespoons Vegenaise 1 teaspoon garlic (minced) Salt and pepper to taste Additional cilantro for garnish

Boil pasta according to package directions (about 10 minutes) or until just tender (al dente). Drain, rinse well in cold water and set aside.

Slice avocado in half. Remove the pit and peel the avocado. Put in food processor together with cilantro, lime juice, Vegenaise and garlic. Blend it until it’s creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the avocado mixture to a large bowl. Add cooked pasta and toss well. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. To serve, transfer salad to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped cilantro.

A Viking raid takes the Warriors down

PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING Hueneme defender David McMillon foiled Carpinteria High School’s attempted comeback with a last-second interception in the end zone, handing the Warriors a 27-20 loss at Valley Memorial Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21. Carpinteria drops to the middle of the pack of the Citrus Coast League with a record of 1-1 and 4-2 overall. With the win, Hueneme moves into a first- place tie with Santa Paula at 2-0 in the new league, as their overall record improved to 2-4 overall.

Both teams came out hard, with fumbles and penalties dominating much of the play in the first half. “We left a lot of plays out there, especially in the first half … we just seem to not connect to the ones we had, so it came down to the last play,” said Carpinteria Coach Rick Candaele. The Warriors had five turnovers on the night, and the visitors connected first when Hueneme quarterback Ethan Neos hit running back Levante Boyd with a short pass for a 24-yard scoring play to take a 7-0 lead with 1:12 left in the half.

But the Warriors put together a quick drive of their own, and quarterback Vance Keiser hooked up with Brady Sturdivan for a first down at the Viking 30-yard line.

A few plays later, Keiser threw to Jacob Macias for a first down at the 11 with 37 seconds left. Pass interference by Hueneme gave the home team a first and goal at the two. Keiser the found Sturdivan again for a two-yard touchdown toss to tie the game at seven going into halftime.

Carpinteria captured the lead in the second half on Jacob Macias’ 52-yard punt return for a touchdown, which put the Warriors up 13-7 with 3:24 left in the

third. But the power of Boyd and the speed of fellow senior running back McMillon began to take its toll on Carpinteria. “I think Hueneme is a little bigger and faster… we did get a little worn down at the end,” admitted Candaele.

Boyd’s 39-yard run put the Vikings at the Warrior one, where Neos ran it in to tie the game at 13.

Neos threw another touchdown pass to Boyd in the final quarter, bringing the score to 20-13 with 8:08 left. In what has become a Friday-night ritual, the next Warrior possession saw Sturdivan’s leaping grab over a Viking player turn into a 64-yard sprint to the end zone for the score, tying the game at 20. Keiser completed 12 of 28 pass attempts for 216 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions on the night, while Sturdivan pulled down six catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Isaac De Alba led the Warriors in rushing with 12 yards on six carries as Carpinteria had difficulty running the ball against a stout Viking defense.

Following an interception, Hueneme executed a short drive from the Warrior 17 with Boyd carrying the ball for a final six-yard touchdown run and a 27-20 lead with 33 seconds left. The Warriors had another chance to win when Sturdivan made a reception combined with a face mask and personal foul, putting the ball at the Viking 15. But the boys from Hueneme took the win with McMillon’s interception on the Warriors’ last pass play. Carpinteria continues League play on Friday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Santa Paula for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Cate School football team maintained their perfect record on Saturday, Sept. 22, thanks to a 73-18 win over defending L.A. City Section Champion Animo Robinson. The victory brings Cate to 3-0.

The Rams started fast on the first play from scrimmage when senior quarterback Jack Deardorff called his own number and took it to the house for a 65-yard touchdown run. Deardorff littered the stat sheet for the Rams, scoring four touchdowns on the ground and adding three more in the air. The three air attacks went to fellow senior Cal Sinclair and junior Thomas Netteshiem and another to fellow senior Drew Anastasio for 10, five and 15 yards, respectively. Anastasio had an additional touchdown run on the day for his second score. Sophomore William Deardorff had a touchdown run, while freshman Will Bouma had two second half touchdowns for Cate.

The defensive unit for Cate contained the size and speed of the visiting Monarchs. Seniors Carson Williams and Jake Nelson, along with junior Scott Holmes anchored the front line for the Rams, while seniors Ethan Cassulo and Dalton Phillips, and juniors William Anderson, Callum Casey and Khadim Pouye racked up tackles all game long. The Rams picked up a few turnovers on the day, including fumble recoveries from Anderson and Casey, and an interception from Sinclair.

“Our team is coming together nicely,” Assistant Coach Dave Soto said, “this unit is starting to play for each other and our school and I’m so proud of all they have done. This truly was a full team effort and we responded well.” The Rams hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday, Sept. 27, to play a rare midweek game against Milken with a kick off at 3 p.m. at Pierce College in Los Angeles.

Carpinteria Junior Warriors is a recreational tackle football league serving girls and boys in Carpinteria from ages 6 to 14 years.

Girls volleyball

September 14 and 15 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team competed in the Camarillo Classic Tournament, finishing 13th out of 16 teams. The Warriors dropped the first two games against Hueneme, then came back to win the third. “A handful of crucial mistakes threw us out of rhythm and the Warriors lost the match in the fourth set,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. The match scores went 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-10 in favor of the Vikings. The Warriors league record is 1-3 with an overall record of 1-4. “The Warriors found themselves in a tough pool and gained a lot of volleyball knowledge and experience,” explained Garcia.

September 19 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team beat Fillmore, three games to one. Number-six and setter Mary Sawlaw ended with 31 assists. “Outside hitter number-14 Yaneli Silva was aggressive at the net, adding 12 kills to help the Warriors,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Outside hitter number-nine Amber Watkins contributed eight kills. Libero number-four Mariela Guerrero ended the night with 27 digs. Carpinteria’s league record is 2-3 and overall record is now 2-4.

Cate runners out-pace rival teams

The Cate Cross Country teams hosted their second home meet in two weeks and had a successful day on their home course. The girls’ squad, paced by the first three finishers, finished well ahead of the four-team field with 33 points. Freshmen Anna DiSorbo and Meena Baher were within a second of their times from last week, finishing in 20:39 and 20:51 respectively. Senior co-captain Bella Hillyer improved her time by three minutes to finish third in 21:53. Junior Ava Weinstein had easily the best race of her Cate career, picking up a vital fourth place for Cate with a time of 26:12 (11th). Sophomore Ari Sterling gutted out a remarkable fifth place, battling breathing problems in the heat to finish 16th in 27:02. In the boys race, Midland finished the first three runners, Will Goddard, Porter Barnes, and Ziggy Goddard, who led their team to a narrow 29-33 victory over the Rams. In a tight pack, Cate runners took the next four places with senior co-captain Josh Shields in 4th (18:34), junior Tesfa Asmara in 5th (18:51), senior co-captain Abnner Olivares in 6th (18:58), and freshman phenom Nick Patrick in 7th (18:59). Sophomore Shion Kato made a huge improvement to power into the fifth slot for Cate, with an 11th place finish in 19:51. Cate finished well ahead of the other four teams in the race.

September 20 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team was beaten by Cate in straight games: 25-14, 25-16 and 25-13. “Their defense was solid, the Rams blocking was consistent all night,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. “The Warriors put up a good fight, however, Cate proved to be too much for Carpinteria to handle,” added Garcia. The Warriors league record is 2-3 and overall record is 2-4.

September 20 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team hosted the first league tournament of the season in the newly created Citrus Coast League, shooting a 358.

Senior Danni Fulton posted a 68, freshman Natali Elizarraraz notched a 70, freshman Diana Higareda shot a 72, and freshmen Ruby Varela and Daisy Martinez posted a pair of 74s. Nordhoff finished first with a 262. Medalist for the tournament was Ella Giuliani with a solid 47. Fillmore shot 275 and finished second with Hueneme shooting a 292 to place third. The next match is on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Fillmore.

Cross Country

September 21 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team ran in the Raider Cross Country Invitational held at College Park in Oxnard. There were 26 high school teams with approximately 1,400 athletes entered. One of the top finishers at this meet was Shayla Alvarez who placed 25th in the girls race and set a personal record on this course with a time of 20:02. In the boys race, Victor Rinaldi placed 86th, and ran a personal record of 17:89. Ytxzae Enriquez finished 106th with a time of 18:22 and Dexter Gordon took 125th at 19:04. The Warriors will compete next at the Citrus Coast League Meet Number Two at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Girls tennis

September 25 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team won against Citrus Coast League foe Malibu, 10-8. Josie Gordon defeated the Number-two for Malibu, 6-4.

“Lexi (Persoon)/Jeannette (Carrillo) really understood what they needed to do, they stayed alert, consistent and put the pressure on the Malibu team,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant of his doubles team that saw the Sharks pull within a game to make it 5-4. Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma swept their matches as did Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Persoon/Carrillo. “And, although they did not win a set, Sydney Endow and Vicky Delk did a great job wearing down the Sharks player before Josie (Gordon) got to her,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Cate pulls off a clutch third set against rival Thacher

Cate School had the upper hand the entire match but hit a wall at 20-10 in the third set.

Thacher picked up their pace and started siding out really well. Their outside hitter made some significant swings around the Cate block, which added more fuel to their fire. Soon tied at 24 apiece, a couple of additional plays and a key dig by Junior Finnian Whelan gave Cate the add point at 27-26. A Thacher error gave up the set and match. Cate was excited to pull off the win, and especially excited so they could start their homecoming festivities. Junior opposite Maya Blattberg recorded the team season high of 10 kills with only one hitting error, which gave her an amazing .562 hitting percentage. Maya was hitting and moving the ball around really well. Junior outside hitter Kenzie Davidson followed with seven kills. Overall, it was another solid performance by the team and the players showed their true grit when being down 25-26 in the third set. The match scores were 25-13, 25-17 and 28-26. Cate is now 4-0 in league.

September 20 - The Cate School girls volleyball team took down Carpinteria in three sets, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-13. Junior team captain Grace Blankenhorn led the team in serve-receive passing with a percentage of 2.14. Fellow junior Maya Blattberg led the Rams in the attack with a .562 hitting percentage, a season best for the team.

Freshman Chidera Chukwumerji, junior Kenzie Davidson and sophomore Grace Johnson contributed to the successful evening by collecting six kills apiece. “Cate was steady in all aspects of the game, the Rams had their season-best serving performance with 16 aces, the best hitting percentage at .195, passed a 1.91, had 41 digs and four blocks,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. Cate is 3-0 in League.

September 22 - The Cate School girls volleyball team beat Thacher with an overtime 28-26 victory in the third set on homecoming weekend to clinch a 3-0 sweep of the Toads. The final game was tied at 24 apiece. “A couple of plays later and a key dig by junior Finnian Whelan gave us the add point at 27-26,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Junior opposite, Maya Blattberg recorded the team season high of 10 kills with only one hitting error which gave her a.562 hitting percentage. September 25 – The Cate School girls volleyball team extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 win on the road against Providence. Junior setter Maya Blattberg collected nine of the 30 team kills, while sophomore setter Riley Borchardt followed up with seven kills. Sophomore middle blocker Grace Johnson had three digs, tallied six aces off 11 attempts and hit for a .286 percentage. “The Rams focused on minimizing serving and hitting errors which led to a very strong performance,” said Cate coach Greg Novak. In the hitting department, the Rams had 75 total attempts with six errors which led to a team season high .320 hitting percentage. Cate served 74 balls with four errors.

September 19 – The Cate School cross country team took first place in the girls race during last week’s Condor League meet. Freshmen Anna DiSorbo and Meena Baher were within a second of their times from last week, finishing in 20:39 and 20:51. Senior co-captain Bella Hillyer improved her time by three minutes to finish third in 21:53, as the Rams scored 33 points to finish ahead of Ojai Valley (51), Laguna Blanca (58), Midland (70), Dunn and Bishop Diego. In the boys race, Midland runners Will Goddard, Porter Barnes, and Ziggy Goddard finished one, two and three, leading their team to a 29-33 victory over the Rams. Cate runners took the next four places, with senior co-captain Josh Shields in fourth place (18:34 for 3 miles), junior Tesfa Asmara in fifth (18:51), senior co-captain Abnner Olivares in sixth (18:58), and freshman Nick Patrick in seventh (18:59). Laguna Blanca was third (108 points), followed by Dunn (113), Coastal Christian (115), Ojai Valley (147) and Bishop Diego.

September 20 – The Cate School girls tennis team opened Tri-Valley League play with a 13-5 win over rival Thacher. Junior Carol Cai, recovering from shoulder surgery, swept the Toads’ singles lineup 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Fellow junior Grace Fuss took her sets 6-0, 6-0 before subbing out. Sarah Polowczak and Fritze Mayer moved to 12-0 on the season, winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 in doubles play. Cate is 4-0 on the season.

Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works/City Engineer performs a variety of tasks and duties pertaining to the programs and projects both office and field technical paraprofessional work in the Department of Public Works.

Fig Fall Out CVN

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM It’s that time of year again when many birds make their journeys to warmer climes. They know where they want to go and maybe there’s some bumps along the way, but eventually, hopefully, they make it where they want to be, safe and sound.

One of my favorite places to watch and photograph a good handful of avian species is right where I work at the Channel Islands National Park—specifically right outside my tent up Scorpion Canyon, on Santa Cruz Island.

I typically pitch my tent behind two boulders. Twenty paces to the north are two old fig trees that have been there since the ranching era occurred in the early 1830s to the late 1980s. Each summer the first figs begin to pop, hidden by the larger, fuller green leaves. As fall approaches the leaves drop and it’s a lot easier to see what’s fluttering from branch to branch, as a bevy of birds frequent the fig trees.

For at least a couple of months there’s

Santa Cruz Island is the only place in the world you can see these beautiful, deep blue jays. a lot of bird activity in and around the fig trees. Besides the birds going after the figs, the endemic island foxes display amazing climbing capabilities as they maneuver between branches, contorting their bodies in ridiculous positions to get to the biggest, sweetest fruit. Island foxes are truly catlike using their tails to counterbalance on the spindly branches out to the very end to chomp on the fullest figs.

There’s been some seasons where the figs are so good even us guides grab and go on the figs, maybe spreading a little goat cheese on them along the way.

But it’s all about the birds. There are some birds that are there year-round like the ravens (very noisy) that are at the top of the pecking order in terms of fig fanatics. The island scrub jays enjoy them too, though. Santa Cruz Island is the only place in the world you can see

They’re the cousins of mainland jays and through many thousands of years of isolation, the island scrub jay has evolved into its own species, as determined in 1994. Birders come from all over the world just to see this one bird.

Some other usual suspects hording figs are spectacular spotted towhees, house finches and rufous-crowned sparrows.

I always love seeing these birds feed on the figs. These are year-round residents as well, so I see them every day I’m out there working, but when fall rolls around anticipation mounts as to what might show up in the fig trees. Even before September this year we had a very rare island visitor grace the eucalyptus grove at the back end of the campground, where myself and the other guides camp. Just next to the fig trees a summer tanager stuck around for a few consecutive days before moving on.

There have been only four other sightings of this species of bird on Santa Cruz Island since records have been kept.

During the fall of 2017, the fig trees came alive with migratory birds. Super aggressive black-headed grosbeaks shredded the figs. Also in decent numbers, were yellow tanagers. They too are all about the

figs. They tolerate each other but sometimes bombard each other, while trading off on the same recently gutted figs still hanging in the trees.

However, there are other birds that are there not for the figs, but for the fruit flies that like the figs. There were good looks at yellow and yellow-rumped warblers and several days with an American redstart.

None of these little birds can sit still as they hop from branch to branch nabbing insects. As fall continues those birds leave and hermit thrushes and plump fox sparrows arrive for the last of the figs.

Once all the figs are devoured and the rest drop on the ground, it’s just us guides and the island foxes again in the campground. It gets very cool and quiet as winter sets in. The fig trees are bare and other things will spike everyone’s interests until those figs fill the trees again next year.
