Montecito Bank & Trust grows assets by $302.45 million

Montecito Bank & Trust grew its assets by $302.45 million, or 14.43%, during the last year, the bank announced this week. This puts the bank at $2.39 billion in assets.

Chairman and CEO Janet Garufis said she is excited about the community’s progress in recovering from the pandemic, and cited the bank’s PPP Forgiveness program.

“While our first quarter results are strong, with loans and deposits continuing to grow, we do remain cautious about the potential impacts of rising rates and inflation.

Clean-up effort set for Santa Barbara Harbor

Santa Barbara harbor’s seafloor debris clean-up program will return for its 14th annual clean sweep on Saturday, May 7.

Volunteer divers, with the support of 40 volunteer dock workers, will remove junk from beneath the marina, hauling it up and carting it off for disposal. In past clean ups, volunteers have removed over 20 tons of debris from the harbor, including bicycles, plastic barrels, phones, computers, boat propellers and more.

Planning Commission approves 500-foot section of coastal trail

BY RYAN P. CRUZ At its Monday, May 2 meeting, the City of Carpinteria Planning Commission swiftly approved a project for the construction of a 500-foot segment of the Coastal Vista Trail, which would include the demolition of a 3,400 square-foot building on the property.

The trail would wind behind the S&S Seeds property and Viola Fields and would extend from the salt marsh to Rincon Point, according to Associate Planner Syndi Souter, who presented the project to the commissioners in a quick meeting that was adjourned a little over a halfhour after it began.

Chair Jane Benefield and Vice-Chair Glenn LaFevers were both absent from the hearing, but the three remaining commissioners unanimously agreed with city staff’s recommendation to approve the project, which is expected to cost about $340,000 as part of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan.

The demolition contract, Souter said, would remove asphalt and concrete from the area and remove the unused building to allow for a 10-foot wide pathway that would eventually link with a future extension to the Coastal Vista Trail, across the property to the east of Viola Fields and the S&S Property at 6175 Carpinteria Avenue.

“This is another piece of the puzzle to

have that trail completed,” Souter said.

The new trail would feature a “decomposed granite” surface and “woodcrete” railings, in addition to two stacked walls that will be built to retain the hillside at certain points along the path. The new segment would ideally be more accessible and welcoming for the community and repopulate a path that had been gently used in recent years.

The three planning commissioners did not object to the project, but commissioner John Callender asked a number of clarifying questions about the project’s exemption under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

“I have a problem with the recommended finding that this project is exempt from CEQA,” he said, specifically pointing to the language saying the project is “surrounded by urban uses,” calling into question whether the area should be considered urban.

“I would be happy to accept the motion if that was dropped,” Calender said.

Since the project still qualified under other exemptions, the commission decided to amend the motion to remove that language and proceed without further changes. The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board previously approved the project on March 31, only asking that the added landscaping remove the purple nightshade and use a “non-toxic” species that would be safer for dogs and children.

Caltrans merges a southbound lane into the northbound lanes below Rincon Last week, Caltrans merged a southbound bypass lane into the northbound lanes just below Rincon, to adjust for work in the Highway 101 construction zones.

The temporary southbound bypass lane will remain in place until January 2023, and Caltrans warned motors to “expect delays.” Two northbound lanes will remain open from Faria Beach to Mussel Shoals, and once work is done on the southbound lanes, a northbound bypass lane will be installed in the area for approximately nine months.

“The bypass lane will be protected by k-rails to avoid northbound traffic, no exits will be available in the corridor,” according to a press release from Caltrans.

Speeds remain at 55 mph in the construction zones.

Lane and ramp closures continue in the Highway 101 construction zone. Two freeway lanes will remain open in each direction during the daytime, and consecutive ramps going in the same direction will not be closed at the same time.

On the northbound side, on Sunday nights between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., one lane between Bailard Avenue and Sheffield Drive, as well as the on- and off-ramps at Bailard Avenue, Casitas Pass Road, Linden Avenue, Santa Monica Road and North Padaro Lane, will be closed. On Monday nights between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., those same areas will be closed.

The on-ramp at Sheffield Drive remains closed, with an anticipated reopening of July 13; the off-ramp at Sheffield Drive is scheduled to reopen Oct. 3.

On the southbound side, on Sunday nights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., one lane between Sheffield Drive and Bailard Avenue, as well as the on- and off-ramps at Carpinteria Avenue, Reynolds Avenue, Linden Avenue, Casitas Pass Road and Bailard Avenue, will be closed.

Due to sound wall construction, North Jameson Lane by Sheffield Drive still has a temporary speed limit of 30 mph in place, due to bike lane sharing.

Lawsuits filed to stop logging, vegetation removal project in Los Padres Three lawsuits were filed last week to stop a logging and vegetation removal project in Los Padres National Forest.

The lawsuits – from a group of environmental, recreational and business organizations, as well as Ventura County and the city of Ojai – seek to stop the project because it is located on Chumash lands, according to a press release from the Los Padres Forest Watch. The project would allow the removal of live and dead trees across 755 acres.

Alongside Ventura County and the city of Ojai, the groups include: the American Alpine Club, the California Chaparral Institute, the Center for Biological Diversity, Environmental Defense Center, John Muir Project of Earth Island Institute, Keep Sespe Wild, Los Padres Forest Watch and Patagonia.

The press release called the land “historically and culturally important to Indigenous people,” noted the area is a popular tourist visitation spot and said it is home to other rare plants and wildlife. The lawsuit alleges the project violates several acts, including the National Forest Man-

agement Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and others.

“We’re proud to stand with Indigenous leaders, local businesses, conservation and recreation groups, and city and county governments in demanding a more thoughtful environmental review of this harmful project,” Los Padres ForestWatch Executive Director Jeff Kuyper said. “Pine Mountain must be protected, not offered up to logging companies using loopholes that make a mockery of our bedrock environmental laws.”

“There is no question that Reyes Peak will be adversely affected by this logging project, which authorizes the removal of large trees in an area that includes unique ‘sky island’ habitat, sacred cultural sites, potential wilderness, and sensitive wildlife,” Senior Attorney Maggie Hall at the Environmental Defense Center added.

Evan Franken 11/26/1951 – 04/18/2022

Evan Franken, 70, of Carpinteria, passed away peacefully on April 18, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Evan grew up in Sioux Center, Iowa, attended college at South Dakota State on a basketball scholarship and lived in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, spending nights working and days skiing. He moved to Carpinteria in 1980 with his first wife, Ronda. There, they raised two children: Cara and Ross. He taught his kids how to shoot a jumpshot, hit a baseball, catch a wave body surfing, clean and cook a halibut and so much more.

Evan worked for Global Marine on the oil rigs offshore Carpinteria, then as an electrician, and finally as an electrical contractor, spending most of his time working at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and fishing, playing and watching basketball (go, Lakers!), skiing, tennis and golf. After Ronda passed away, he met and eventually married Christianne Carpenter, and together they enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs, Hawaii and Mexico. Evan will be dearly missed and always remembered.

Evan was preceded in death by his first wife, Ronda, parents Everett and Nelvina and his brother Greg. He is survived by his second wife Christianne, daughter Cara, son Ross, grandsons Everett and Lucas and sisters Yvonne and Ramona.

Evan requested a celebration of life be held in his honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. A celebration of life was held at Lions Park in Carpinteria on May 2. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to the Carpinteria Boys and Girls Club.

Daphne Carty 1926 – 2022

Daphne Carty, a fine Christian woman, passed on to Paradise on April 25, 2022, at the age of 96. Hers was a life full of faith and the caring and nurturing of everyone and everything around her.

She grew up in Los Angeles and attended George Washington High School, where she excelled as valedictorian, president of the Latin Club, and where she met Bill, her future husband of nearly 68 years. As Bill would later explain, she was “Miss Everything.”

Daphne began her college education at UCLA on a full scholarship, took a long pause for the war, marriage and raising seven children, then later resumed college at UCSB where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She never wavered in her commitment to her family, but still found time to assist students as a substitute teacher, aide and mentor.

An intelligent, capable and determined woman, Daphne accomplished many tasks that were beyond her petite size.

She was known to rearrange all of the furniture in a room entirely by herself, including moving the piano. She much preferred yard work to housework, and spent countless hours working outdoors with her blonde hair in a ponytail and a smile on her face.

The foundation of Daphne’s life was her Christian faith, exemplified by her personal study Bible that may be the most marked-up Bible ever. “I felt led by the Holy Spirit” was often the explanation for random acts of kindness, and she prayed by name for everyone she knew, including all of the neighbors on her block.

Daphne expressed her creativity in many ways, including the designing of houses, cake decorating, collage and her always-admired, exquisite penmanship.

Together, Daphne and Bill (Doc) were “Mr. and Mrs. Everything.” They are perhaps best known for riding their bicycles around Carpinteria, an activity that Daphne enjoyed until the age of 90.

Daphne is survived by her six children: Bill, Kathleen Mills, Martin (Marybeth), Gregg (Geri), Susan Van Der Kar (Scott) and Carolyn Ebeling (Jim), eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her son, Mark, and her sonin-law, Joe Connell.

In keeping with Daphne’s humble wishes, a simple, private family celebration will be held.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. – Galations 5:22-23

Bertha Ornelas 05/28/1944 – 04/14/2022

Bertha Augustina Ornelas, 77, of Carpinteria passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 14, after a 17-year battle with cancer.

A second-generation Carpinteria native, she was born in Carpinteria on May 28, 1944. Growing up locally she was connected to her very large extended family: the Moreno and Ornelas families of Carpinteria. She enjoyed work and held many occupations in her life. For 30 years she was the face behind the counter at Wes’s Shoe Repair in Santa Barbara, a family business owned with her husband Wes. A lifelong learner, she returned to school as an adult and graduated from Santa Barbara City College with a degree in business. This would serve her well in her future occupations. After graduation, she joined United Blood Services (now Vitalant Blood Services) and held a position as an intake specialist working mobile blood drives. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a retail store associate for the local Goodwill Store in Carpinteria.

Bertha met Wes (Wenceslao) Ornelas and married in 1962; she had seven children. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and took great pride in growing her large family.

She made it her mission to improve the life of others as well as those in her family.

When she wasn’t working, she could be found supporting her family by helping to organize family gatherings, big and small, and attending her grandchildren’s special events. She was an avid lover of books and could be found with her nose buried in the latest printed novel.

After retirement she and her husband began to travel. They made yearly trips to Mexico and purchased an RV to tour the state up and down, visiting family and sightseeing.

Bertha is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wenceslao (Wes) Ornelas and her children, Brigida (David) Ornelas-Crooks, John Ornelas, Rebecca Ornelas, and Ricardo Ornelas, all of Carpinteria; and Martha (Kevin) Gibbs of Lompoc, Diana Ornelas of Ventura, and Patricia (Russell) Ornelas of Eureka, California. She also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her mother Lupe (Moreno-Diaz) Frescas, and also survived by her siblings John Moreno of Bakersfield, Norma Urrea of Fillmore, Helen Boydstrum of Porterville, and Salvador Diaz of Los Angeles.

There will be a simple Rosary on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. and funeral Mass on Friday, May 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria. A graveside service will be held following the Mass at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Passing the baton

Contributing to the community and society at large is a noble and very rewarding effort. I was thinking, in my dotage, right now it is a fortuitous time with the advent of districts, to have younger people step up to the task. At the concept hearing for the bluff area properties, many articulate, enlightened and concerned people spoke up against bluff development.

Some brought their children and all brought their passion. This is the demographic that should run for our city council. Shaping the town that we all adore requires younger input. I’ve heard all the reasons you are saying to yourselves – busy with kids, working a demanding job, underhanded politics, too many meetings, thankless decisions and a lot of hours reading. So what? If you’re young, you can probably handle it.

There are numerous commissions, committees, boards whose decisions shape the tone and character of Carpinteria. It’s an easy process and an effective way to contribute. Time to ditch the excuses and be the change you want to see, as they say.

Kiosk needs volunteers

How often do we find ourselves in the middle of town and just walk by the small green kiosk next to our Seal Fountain? This kiosk is far more than just a colorful collection of posters for many of Carpinteria’s attractions. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the kiosk becomes Carpinteria’s Visitors Information Center every weekend.

Travelers come from all over the world (really) and are welcomed by knowledgeable, friendly Hosts to our little beach town with all the information they need to have a great getaway. Whether it’s restaurant suggestions, how to see harbor seals, or where to find a quiet stroll through our wetlands, a visitor can get directions and hints on how to maximize their stay.

Bus and train schedules, historic sights, hiking trails – all here. But all of this needs volunteers to staff the kiosk.

This requires just one two-hour shift on a Friday, Saturday or possibly Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

If you are interested in sharing your knowledge of our little slice of paradise and enjoy chatting with friends and strangers, the Host program could be a great fit for you. Sign-ups and a bit of training will take place May 11 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. I encourage anyone who would enjoy the chance to show off our little beach town to come check us out.

We are very pleased that the city extended sidewalk dining on our charming, downtown Linden Avenue. It is wonderful to eat outdoors while enjoying the Carpinteria view and weather, and it is good for the businesses.

One thing that is not good is the ugliness of the chipped cement barriers. All the restaurants look great from the sidewalk, but driving by, most of them look terrible. Linden Avenue looks like a construction zone. Using the wood covered barrier as an example, why can’t all the barriers be professionally and uniquely covered? It would make us locals proud.

We need more water

The western U.S. is going through its driest 22-year period in at least 1,200 years. All our lakes are perilously low.

In response to “Do your homework on bluffs parcel” (CVN, Vol. 28, No. 32) we can all agree that money is needed to keep our beautiful community quaint, thriving and viable.

However, since the City of Carpinteria currently has a budget deficient, it seems unlikely it will be able to contribute to the purchase of the Bluffs parcel. The city could, however, support environmentally and economically smart ways to leverage our current resources, such as the proposed investment in the Surfliner Inn project. The Surfliner Inn project not only will preserve the uniqueness of our community, but it will also deliver vast benefits while leveraging minimal investment of city resources.

Parking Lot #3 is already owned by the city and sits smack in the heart of our business district, so it is perfectly located for tourism. By developing only half of Lot #3, the community will gain additional downtown parking with a new Lot #4,

plus upgraded walking and biking trails.

The development will also generate over $600,000 per year in lease and TOT taxes.

Investing in the Surfliner Inn project is a much smarter use of city resources. The city could then earmark this additional revenue source for other investments, such as future land acquisitions (like the Bluffs parcel), park and trail maintenance, downtown revitalization and additional support to many of our essential nonprofits. I like the idea of us thinking ahead, seeing the whole picture and working smart for generations to come.

Our state water allotment is only 5%.

Our groundwater is being over drawn and is still unregulated. The average person uses 100 gallons a day, Montecito residents average 270 gallons a day and the average hotel guest uses between 100 to 400 gallons a day. Our Carpinteria Valley Water District is concerned about not being able to buy supplemental water.

The district also has several major projects to allocate water for and are wondering where they will get it.

Since 2016, the Montecito Water District been talking about recycled water.

Their biggest obstacle is that Montecito residents don’t like recycled water on their estates and golf courses. Although years away, prolific water user Montecito is seeking ways to use our aquifer to store their recycled water. Which brings to question; what is the status of our recycled water program? One million gallons of treated water a day is going into the ocean.

The topper is a spectacularly clueless developer, who wants to build a resort on the bluffs when we barely have enough water for ourselves. It is hard to understand how these kinds of projects are even being considered. Climate change has made it crucial that we pivot to climate adaptation plans that will save our community – not build more useless monuments. There has never been a more crucial time for our leaders to show some resolve and put a freeze on all new projects and water meters. The choice is now or never, as nature does not give you a second chance. Except for one voice, it seems that many of our leaders cannot grasp the enormity of climate change.

They must find the will before it’s too late.

Focus on mental health, May 2022: This four-week series will focus on Mental Health Awareness Month. Each week, HopeNet will show the different aspects of mental health awareness and focus on the resources available in the Carpinteria and Santa Barbara communities.

Self-care is not selfish

Mental health can be very confusing to people who think of it as something only other people have or maybe as something that someone who is very ill might have.

The reality is, we all have mental health issues of varying degrees and intensity.

It’s just a matter of whether those disorders flare up enough to cause disfunction in our daily activities. Some of the more common disorders tend to be depression or anxiety, or other mood issues related to trauma.

Nowadays, you’ll see lots of talk in the news about physical and mental trauma, especially as it relates to children.

Parenting should focus on the needs of our young. As their development occurs, these issues become more prominent and increase chances of disorders if they’re not adequately addressed.

We have a lot of stressors in the world.

Covid-19 is lingering, there’s a war going on, there’s battles within ourselves, our families and our friendships. Some wars with other countries can make us feel pretty chaotic and stressed out. This can be conscious or unconscious.

What are some ways for us to deal with these stressors? One way is to accept that mental health is an important part of our lives. We have days where we don’t feel as well and need to take better care of ourselves or get assistance. We might even need medication to deal with some of the bigger things going on in our life.

I encourage you to really keep track of that, because you can continue to accrue these issues and before you know it you might have something really big and stressful that happens that pushes us into a place that makes it very challenging to recover from.

Most people have insurance plans to cover mental health care, seeing a psychotherapist, a psychologist or maybe a psychiatrist. The main thing is to go ahead and get some help and realize that it’s really an investment in yourself. Selfcare is not selfish – it’s about taking care of yourself. When we love ourselves, we take better care of ourselves, and we are more able to also love other people and care for other people.

flicts or triggers that come up in our daily lives that are going to affect us. In fact, every eight milliseconds we’re getting triggered by something in our environment – people, places, sound, spells and/ or our internal world that includes our hearts, our nervous system, our thoughts, and memories and images from the past.

Living in denial is not going to make problems go away.

Many things going on in our lives are far below our consciousness level of awareness. That’s why we have to really pay attention to body sensations and feelings that are arising and do check-ins with our self every day. Taking these actions may result in healthy physical and mental benefits and a sense of well-being that be life changing!

Carpinteria’s unofficial symbols

THE LAY OF THE LAND MIKE WONDOLOWSKI I recently came across a list of all the official State Symbols for California. These are set by state law and include the iconic, such as the state animal (California grizzly bear), flower (California poppy), and mineral (gold). But the list also includes lesser-known symbols including the state fabric (denim), fossil (saber-toothed cat), and gemstone (Benitoite). The full list is here: tinyurl.com/ca-symbols.

I found myself pondering what the symbols of Carpinteria might be. So, I embarked on a quest to assemble a list using a temporally longitudinal methodology analyzing empirical data related to the affinity of local subjects to various aspects of their environment.

That’s my silly way of saying I put the following list together based on what I have observed over time about what Carpinterians identify as important. I welcome your comments, suggestions, disagreements, or ideas for additional symbols to add to the list – send them to carpsymbols@gmail.com. If I get enough feedback, I might need a follow-up column on this topic!

So, here’s my list of not-so-official symbols for Carpinteria: Fruit: This one is easy. Avocado! (Yes, it’s technically a fruit.)

Event: Definitely the Avocado Festival.

(AvoFest 2022 is only five months away: October 1-2.) A close runner-up in this category is the standing-room only public hearing at City Hall that inevitably follows yet another proposal to build a re-

sort somewhere on the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Marine Mammal: Harbor seal. Apologies to the dolphins and gray whales we often see from the beach, but our harbor seals actually give birth right on our beach!

Tree: This category is not as easy as the first few, but after some thought the answer is clear: the Wardholme Torrey Pine next to Lucky Llama. It is believed to be the world’s tallest Torrey Pine tree.

Odor: Cannabis.

Sound: Train horn. The runner-up is the loud and polluting gas-powered leaf blower that has the primary purpose of moving dirt and dust from the ground into the air so it can settle in neighbors’ sidewalks, driveways, yards, patios, windows and lungs. (Starting January 1, 2024, California is banning the sale of these monsters!)

Hiking Trail: Franklin Trail. Runner-up: Carpinteria Bluffs.

Bird: This category is highly competitive with many worthy options. Maybe the great egret or snowy egret? What about the snowy plover? Based on sheer quantity and loudness, perhaps the crow?

Mockingbird? Anna’s hummingbird?

Any would be a good symbol. But there is one bird that has a big physical presence but seems to exude a calm and cool attitude, and when it is ready, it acts with remarkable speed and agility: the great blue heron, a bird that can be up to 4.5 feet tall! It reminds me of our community overall: generally laid-back and low-key, but when necessary, we act with remarkable speed and effectiveness.

Beachcombing Prize: Again, many possibilities. But the wavy topped turban snail shell is the one that stands out as the prize that seems to put the biggest smile on someone’s face when they are walking down the beach with one in their hand.

Kayaking Destination: The Carpinteria Reef, just offshore from the mouth of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. Depending on the tides, the water may be as shallow as a few feet deep, and kayakers can see ocean creatures such as sea stars and urchins on the bottom, and can even sometimes see a bat ray, leopard shark, or harbor seal swim by.

Tagline: “World’s Safest Beach,” a description inspired by the protection we get from the Carpinteria Reef from large waves and the strong currents they would create.

Moment in time: Walking on the Bluffs enjoying the spring wildflowers while a line of brown pelicans glides over the waves.

Identity: There is no better representation of Carpinteria than what is highlighted on page one of our General Plan: “The goal of the community is to preserve the essential character of our small beach town, its family-oriented residential

neighborhoods, its unique visual and natural resources and its open, rural surroundings while enhancing recreational, cultural and economic opportunities for our citizens.”

This statement sums up the collage of the above symbols. This identity requires ongoing work, service, and protection.

We need to be like the blue heron and be chill, but ready to act when necessary.

Mike Wondolowski is president of the Carpinteria Valley Association (CarpinteriaValleyAssociation.org), a local organization dedicated to maintaining the small beach town nature of our community. In his 30 years of involvement in planning issues, he has witnessed visionary successes, as well as decisions that were later widely regretted.

When not stuck indoors, he can often be found enjoying Carpinteria’s treasures including kayaking and snorkeling along the coast, running or hiking on the bluffs or the Franklin Trail, or “vacationing” as a tent camper at the State Beach.

School Board approves new Aliso School principal, hears public comments on cannabis operation

Union President Jay Hotchner also spoke, sharing concerns that the school board had not submitted a letter against the cannabis operation.

“Union leadership has not, and is not currently, taking a position on the value of cannabis cultivation in the community of Carpinteria,” Hotchner said.

“However, after several inquiries from colleagues, community members and local organizations, students, parents, neighbors, union leadership that a very different question demands our attention: the question being, is it appropriate for district leadership like yourself to violate its own board policies, mislead the community, and accept money from cannabis growers operating in conflict with legally established buffer zones for school districts and facilities?” he asked the board.

The board cannot take action on requests presented at public comment until the next meeting.

At its Tuesday, April 26 meeting, the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees approved several personnel assignments, including the appointment of Aliso School’s new principal.

Aliso’s interim principal, Brett Weiberg, will take over as Aliso’s new principal effective July 1, 2022. He has served as Aliso’s interim principal since April 2022, following the resignation of former Aliso principal Veronica Gallardo.

He will resign from his position as a teacher at Aliso on June 10, 2022. Weiberg has been with the district for over 21 years; he previously taught second grade before taking over as Aliso’s interim principal.

He earned his Bachelor of Science at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, a Master of Education at California Lutheran University and a multiple subject teaching credential from Chapman University.

Public comment: appeal against cannabis nursery near Carpinteria High School

Several community members submitted letters about the appeal for the cannabis nursery at 4532 Foothill Road during public comment, which were read aloud by Superintendent Diana Rigby during last week’s school board meeting. The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission heard the appeal against the grow on May 4.

The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission approved a cannabis operation for that location in early February, a decision that faced backlash from community members due to the location’s proximity to the high school. The nursery is spread across two parcels, at 18.49 acres and 10.74 acres, and is owned by Evan Van Wingerden.

The boundary of Carpinteria High School and the parcel’s boundary are 400 feet apart; the operation uses a line inside one of the greenhouses to keep cannabis cultivation 750 feet away from the high school buffer line, and nursery cultivation 500 feet away.

All letters submitted to the trustees’ meeting were in support of the appeal against the project, and asked that the school board send a letter to the planning commission supporting the appeal.

Carpinteria teacher Brett Weiberg will take over as the new Aliso Elementary School principal effective July 1, 2022.

“This cannabis operation is particularly deleterious to student and faculty health as it is directly west of Carpinteria High School,” Commenter Robert Lesser wrote to the board, claiming that “many people, including staff and students, are suffering health impacts from both the stench of cannabis and the Ecosorb, the ingredient in the buyer’s vapor phase system.”

He also called the premises’ measurement from the school “ambiguous.”

Lucky Llama: a favorite local hang for ten years running

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P Most of us have a Lucky Llama story.

For example, many columns have been written alongside soothing hot drinks, acai bowls (arguably, the best), or Irish oatmeal that I try to replicate and can’t. Along with choice drinks and pastries, the Llama has hosted friend and family gatherings, business meetings, temporary workspaces for entrepreneurs, art shows and live music for a little over a decade. (They celebrated ten years on April 6 if you can believe it!)

But the first challenge for owners Ryan and Ashley Moore was getting into an industry quite different from their past.

For example, did you know Ryan Moore was a professional surfer who grew up in and managed his father’s surf shop, Rincon Designs? I’m embarrassed.

I didn’t realize until he mentioned it over the phone. (Which isn’t hard to believe if you know or have talked to Moore; “humble” and “kind” are two words to describe him.)

“I was surfing professionally and frankly got burned out. It got to a point where I needed to step away from all of it and find my identity. I had two little kids, around one and two years old, and it was time to make it happen,” Moore said.

“We kicked around ideas for a while.

My wife’s family owns the property, and one night my father-in-law tried to call our bluff a little bit and said, ‘Why don’t you do it there?’ He had an email with a business plan by three a.m.”

Business plan in hand, the Moores got to work. I wondered what kind of business advice they received starting out.

“You know, that’s a tough one. I’ve been around many business-minded, entrepreneur-type people my whole life, and I think it’s more than one specific thing.” Moore said. “Everyone – my parents, my wife, our families – work hard. Everyone does different things, but it seemed like they did everything a hundred percent, and I learned this is what you have to do. You have to put your head down, and if it doesn’t work,

“There’s something to be said for ‘ignorance is bliss,’ and ‘fake it till you make it,’ and all those quotes,” Moore said. “Whatever it was, we cared about it and certainly took it seriously. We wanted to do the best job we could with the resources we had.”

I asked what advice he would tell himself in the beginning. “That it’s probably going to be the hardest thing

you’ve ever done, and you’ll probably push yourself to the limit. But at some point, the clouds part, and things fall in line, and suddenly you realize it can happen. But it’s hard because there’s no fixed timeline,” Moore said.

“I vividly remember sitting on the beach at Jelly Bowl after month six of not coming up for air. I’m there with my two little girls, and I looked at my wife and said, ‘I don’t know how long I keep this up. I’m totally ragged right now.’”

Slow and steady, the coffee shop came to be. The vibe of Lucky Llama is a nod to The Coffee Grinder, Carpinteria’s coffee haunt from decades past, formerly in the Corktree Cellar’s space. “The Coffee

Grinder was the cool nineties coffee house, like the one you see on ‘Friends,’” Moore said. “It really was a community space where people had art shows, hung out, went on first dates, wrote, all that good stuff. That was a huge inspiration for us.”

As for the Moore’s newest venture, Sunburst Wine Bar, they wanted to find a middle ground between brewery and winery. Sunburst is one of those places as fun as it looks on Instagram. That’s only natural, considering the Moores run a favorite neighborhood hang and homestead-forward boutique right down the block. (Ashley Moore, Lauren Malloy and Emma Moore own Heritage Goods & Supply next door, which is an extension of their successful blog.)

The Moores have worked hard, and Moore left us with this: “I think just caring about what you’re doing, treating people fairly, but also being a real person at the same time by showing up and listening,” he said. For life or business, it sounds like the keys to success.

Carpinterian featured in Channelkeeper juried art show

Bishop Diego High School Senior Kylie Zimmerman’s art, “Aboriginal Fish,” was recently featured in the 2022 Channelkeeper’s juried art show, “What the Channel Means to me.”

This is the 19th year the Channelkeeper has held the juried student art show, which focuses on the natural, marine environment and the benefits it brings to the area. Four schools participated in this year’s show: Bishop Diego High School, Dos Pueblos High School, San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara High School. The show was sponsored by the city of Goleta and Trillium Enterprises Inc. Zimmerman’s mother, Stefany, told CVN that Kylie enjoys art and that her piece was entered into the contest by her teacher. Fellow Bishop Diego High School student India Longo also entered into the show.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara’s (MCASB) newest exhibit “Through What Agency?” will open Saturday, May 7.

The exhibit, which focuses on community-driven spaces and how groups in Santa Barbara address climate change and climate justice, will run from May 8 – August 21, 2022.

“On both a micro and a macro scale the Santa Barbara community is actively engaged in furthering the discourse around innovative and accessible steps toward combating climate change. Featuring workshops, lectures, screenings, and hands-on activities for the whole family, MCASB will underline the crucial work that is being done right here in Santa Barbara,” MCASB Associate Curator Alexandra Terry shared.

An opening reception will be held on May 7, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. MCASB is located at 653 Paseo Nuevo, Santa Barbara.

The Solace of Spring

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON There is a lot to be sad about in the world these days. Perhaps that’s why, even more than usual, I am watching spring’s perpetual patterns for reassurance.

The Cliff Swallows returned March 16 from their wintering grounds in Argentina. With the weird weather, I worried whether they would find enough insects to migrate to their little colony on our garage in the hills above Carpinteria. When I heard the familiar churring and squeaking from the sky, I was elated. About 20 swallows circled above – home free.

More arrived in the following days, a joyful rendezvous after a long journey.

Each sunset, my husband Ken and I watch them muster high overhead, then encircle the garage in a game of crack the whip, peeling off and pouring into the mud nests that are tucked under the eaves.

We were not the only ones watching. A Cooper’s Hawk dashed out of a nearby avocado tree trying to snag a swallow as they rushed into the safety of their gourdlike mud nests. Each night all three of us showed up for the spectacle. Ken was outraged, “They are barely a bite!” I was philosophical. “Everyone has to eat.”

One evening, I went over to my neighbor Val’s for wine on her deck. Val and her husband recently had their beautiful home painted. “I strictly instructed them to paint around the swallow nests,” she announced. I could imagine the painters’ confusion at this directive from my urbane friend. Amused, I toasted her as we watched a pair of swallows dart into the mud gourd – a splendid nest on a splendidly painted house.

Recently, in search of spring flowers, I hiked up the Aliso Valley Trail off Paradise Road where I met a group of women hikers from Carpinteria and Summerland. We stood on the trail chatting. Nancy Hill, who lives above the Greenwell Preserve, mentioned that she had Western Bluebirds nesting in her yard. I asked if I could come and see them.

Preserve. The preserve was formerly a public works yard and is now a small, protected area, with a greenhouse for growing native plants for restoration projects by Channel Islands Restoration and historic farm buildings.

The Hills have a home that is landscaped for wildlife, meaning they largely leave the native vegetation. While I was there, we watched a pair of bluebirds fly in and out of a nesting box hanging on a Eucalyptus branch. Nancy has a separate feeding box where she puts live mealworms. The bluebirds know how to navigate the small hole that keeps other birds like starlings and crows out.

Having extra protein such as mealworms during breeding season is helpful.

For the migratory birds, feeding provides a boost along the way.

Due to pesticides, the numbers of insect-eating birds and insects themselves are declining. Birds’ ability to manage migration is increasingly difficult. That’s especially the case when extreme weather, brought on by a changing climate, has made insect hatches mistimed with migrating birds.

Two weeks ago, I temporarily migrated north to take care of my deceased mother’s home in Penticton, British Columbia.

I arrived to hail and frost. The swallows had just begun to arrive, scouring the skies for insects. Warblers poked around the bare branches looking for larvae.

As I readied to return, eager catch up on spring unfolding at home, I had a surprise. My Covid-19 test required to re-enter the United States was positive.

Now I am isolated. Here, at least, I can watch the migration of birds.

The White-crowned Sparrows from California and Mexico have shown up in hordes, pausing to replenish before they carry on to northern BC, the Yukon and Alaska to nest. They descend on the feeders, rub a dub in the bird bath. I put seed in the lawn Buddha’s begging cup where they gladly perch. Here too, a Cooper’s Hawk streaks into the melee like a fighter plane – but misses his target. It’s hard to be a predator.

Back home, there is a bluebird pair inspecting our real estate – a bluebird box we brought from British Columbia, where volunteers erect “bluebird trails,” or boxes, along fence posts to help them to nest. Bluebirds have lost most of their natural cavities in trees to overbearing Starlings, and English House Sparrows, invasive birds native to Europe.

I emailed Nancy Hill and asked how her bluebirds were doing. She wrote: “I just took the box down to check. I opened the door and found the female sitting on the nest. She looked at me and didn’t move, so I closed things up and put the box back on the tree. I just love bluebirds. My bluebirds are very aware of who feeds them and when. This morning they were hungry, so they sat on the kitchen windowsill looking in at me.”

Today, my husband sent me a gift – a picture of the mealworm feeding platform he built to help coax the bluebirds to stay and use the nest box. And a blurry picture of the couple dining there.

Free flowing wine and beer met local comfort food and colorful art on Saturday at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center for the center’s annual fundraiser, Palate to Palette.

The four-hour event saw more than 170 people flock to the arts center for a look at Carpinteria’s gems – food and drinks abound from a number of local eateries, donated paintings from more than a dozen local artists and the unique camaraderie that comes with Carpinteria celebrations. A live auction invited looks at “Small Town Big Art,” a John Wullbrandt Tour and lunch, dinner for 20 at the Avocado/Lemon Ranch Estate and other surprise items.

Carpinteria children explore Dia de los Niños PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON

On Saturday, Carpinteria children celebrated Dia de Los Niños, or Children’s Day, at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, eagerly showing off musical talents, selling unique goods and enjoying yummy treats. Hosted by Artesania para la Familia and the Carpinteria Children’s Project, this was the 8th year Dia de Los Niños was held; this year, the day was emceed by radio host Sonia Aguila-Gonzales, who opened up the program with Senator Monique Limon and Carpinteria City Councilmember Natalia Alarcon. Sunday’s event was also sponsored by Montecito Bank & Trust, the

Carpinteria LatinX Collective and Erick and Lourdes Trigueros.

Aresania para La Familia Program Director Suzanne Requejo told CVN a highlight of the event was the Carpinteria LatinX Collective’s El Mercadito, a youth crafters market, which encouraged budding entrepreneurs to sell their own handmade goods.

“The afternoon was filled with laughter and joy from children of all ages who heard and watched puppets, mariachis, and dancers. Families also participated in art activities and received free books,” Requejo said.

Playing the guitar is 7-year-old Isabella Fernandez, alongside 15-year-old Fabian Esparza on the vihuela.

“We enjoyed all the inches of this 15 mile-long, four-mile-wide island. We stayed at Clearview Villas and on this day chartered a private boat with Calypso Charters,” the two shared.

Last month, I gave you a glimpse into Wearables and all that is going on as Smart Technology is integrated into more and more of our daily lives. I thought a good follow-up to this would be a discussion on the Cloud. The Cloud is a key element in all that is happening with the next iteration of the internet.

Another factor that inspired my going down this path has to do with the fact that I recently joined a company located in the U.K., Videoloft, as their U.S. representative. Videoloft is a Cloud-based company.

A small team of tech folks that have developed an app that allows legacy video surveillance systems to utilize the Cloud with a rich set of features to improve and enhance the capabilities of current installed video hardware. Your cameras are not only on your smart phone, but are also backed up in the cloud, and you are given the ability to use features like video analytics.

What is the cloud? You may have heard people using terms like the Cloud, Cloud computing, or Cloud storage. But what exactly is the Cloud?

Simply put, the Cloud is the Internet – more specifically, it’s all the things you can access remotely over the Internet.

When something is in the Cloud, it means it’s stored on Internet servers instead of your computer’s hard drive. Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the internet with pay-as-you-go pricing. Instead of buying, owning and maintaining physical data centers and servers, you can access technology services, such as computer power, storage, and databases, on an as-needed basis from a Cloud provider. There are a handful of well-known, major public cloud companies – such as Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and Microsoft Azure – but there are also hundreds of other cloud computing providers all over the world.

Why use the cloud? Some of the main reasons to use the cloud are convenience and reliability. For example, if you’ve ever used a web-based email service, such as Gmail, you’ve already used the Cloud.

All of the emails in a web-based service are stored on servers rather than on your computer’s hard drive. This means you can access your email from any computer with an Internet connection. It also means you’ll be able to recover your emails if

Let’s look at some of the most common reasons to use the Cloud.

File storage: You can store all types of information in the Cloud, including files and email. This means you can access these things from any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection, not just your home computer. Dropbox and Google Drive are some of the most popular Cloud-based storage services.

File sharing: The cloud makes it easy to share files with several people at the same time. For example, you could upload several photos to a cloud-based photo service like Flickr or iCloud Photos, then quickly share them with friends and family.

Backing up data: You can also use the Cloud to protect your files. There are apps such as Carbonite that automatically back up your data to the cloud. This way, if your computer ever is lost, stolen or damaged, you’ll still be able to recover these files from the cloud.

Let’s talk about web apps in the Cloud.

Just as desktop applications allow you to perform tasks on your computer there are also web applications – or web apps – that run in the cloud and do not need to be installed on your computer. Many of the most popular sites on the Internet are actually web apps. You may have even used a web app without realizing it! Let’s take a look at some popular web apps.

Facebook: Facebook lets you create an online profile and interact with your friends. Profiles and conversations can be updated at any time, so Facebook uses web app technologies to keep the information up to date.

Pixlr: Pixlr is an image editing application that runs in your web browser. Much like Adobe Photoshop, it includes many advanced features, like color correction and sharpening tools.

Google Docs: Google Docs is an office suite that runs in your browser. Much like Microsoft Office, you can use it to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. And because the files are stored in the Cloud, it’s easy to share them with others.

The Cloud is a big part of the emerging Metaverse that I shared in an earlier column. So, it is currently partly cloudy – but there are more clouds and rain in the forecast.

WELLNESS WARRIOR LEAH HARDING Being a social butterfly while trying to balance your health and fitness can be a hard road to travel. Ideally, when you take inventory of your social outings and your health the scale would balance perfectly and you would feel harmony with what you choose to consume while out with friends, and how you feel about yourself the next day.

More often than not, you’re probably vowing to “never do that again,” because as we all know, it wasn’t just “a drink” – it was a couple of drinks with an appetizer or two thrown in for good measure, then possibly dinner on top of it all.

Going out drinking and eating more than usual is not a derailment, when done occasionally and with forethought.

So, how do you figure out the balance and keep things in check?

Here are 5 steps to help: 1. Have a plan going into it. One of the easiest ways to do this is to decide how many drinks you’ll have before you go.

Maybe it’s one or maybe it’s three, but the point is, if you decide beforehand, you’ll be much more likely to stick to that number and not overdo it on alcohol.

2. Before you go out, jump online and look at the restaurant’s menu to see which option will best fit your goals. Look for things that aren’t fried or sautéed. Good options for appetizers include things like ceviche, raw oysters, pita and hummus, or a side salad. For dinner, keep it reasonable, with protein-focused meals with at least one veggie included.

3. If you must get something fried, go with the calamari over fries so you at least get a boost of protein. In the same vein, get the charcuterie over a queso dip, which is usually just cheese diluted with milk. Pick protein-forward options to help satiate you longer and evaluate if you really want dessert before you look at the menu.

4. Just because you’re going out doesn’t mean you need to order the nachos simply because you can. Going out doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a “special occasion.” When you look at it as social time over YOLO food time, you’ll do your future self a favor. (YOLO: You only live once).

own, make a choice that will satisfy and satiate. If you choose something decadent, offset it with a lighter appetizer or skip dessert. The other option is to simply be ok with what your choices are. Let go of any guilt and just enjoy the special time with friends or family.

5. Don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t stick to your plan. Accept where you are and move on from it. Period.

The biggest thing here is that you’re learning to balance your goals and social life. It probably won’t happen overnight, and there are bound to be nights where you overindulge, but the point is that you’re progressing forward, even if it’s with baby steps. Slow progress is still progress.

Rincon Voices: Simone Reddingius

Longtime Rincon regular Simone Reddingius checks all the boxes for a surfing life well lived: musician in a surf band (The Wrinkled Teenagers), artist, longtime Hawaii resident, competitive surfer and a photographer, whose work has appeared in all the important surf mags. That’s quite a resume for this native of Temple City who says she’s a “super late bloomer.” Maybe, but her timing is perfect. She just happened to meet “the” Denny Aaberg at Carp state beach in 1973, who proceeded to give Simone an introduction to surfing then and there. “Denny definitely got me going on the right path to surfing,” is how Simone puts her lucky DUNCAN MCKENZIE meeting with the legend.

Per Simone, “a friend introduced me to Larry and told him I was budding surf photographer. He gave some great pointers on lighting and technique over the years.” He also got Simone press passes to high-profile surf contests. Good connections, yes, but Simone paid her dues too, working at camera shops and a darkroom lab in Santa Barbara for years, mastering her technique and equipment in the pre-digital camera world.

When asked if she’s a pioneer in terms of women’s surfing, both as a wave rider and photographer, Reddingius scoffed, citing her own role models. Among them are Margo Oberg, the world’s first professional woman surfer in 1975, and Rell Sunn (1950–98), the “Queen of Makaha” Photographer Simone Reddingius, Simone Reddingius sets up at Rincon Point in the 1970s. and a Hawaiian women’s surfing pioneer pictured recently at the Lucky who dominated women’s surfing in the Llama in Carpinteria.

Warriors ride momentum through first two rounds

The top-ranked Carpinteria boys volleyball’s senior-led squad has built on their regular season success with back-toback CIF Division 5 playoff victories over Santa Monica and Fontana.

In the first round, the Warriors hosted Santa Monica and both teams came out swinging in the first set. A back-andforth battle lit up the crowd, with the two teams trading leads, and neither pulling away by more than one point. After a defensive battle, the Warriors were able to squeak away with a 28-26 first set win.

Carpinteria coach Mickey Caughey said the team fed off each other’s energy to take the 1-0 lead.

“Everyone was pumped up to not let the ball hit the floor without someone going after the ball,” Caughey said. “Each great save encouraged all the rest of our players to give everything they had.”

The first set also set the tone for the rest of the match. “The fans attending the game got a real exhibition on volleyball defense,” Caughey said. “The fans got excited, we got excited and we just kept on getting better. That first set win had us psyched up and the other team psyched out.”

Carpinteria took the second set 25-19, and followed with a 25-21 win in the third set to secure the team’s 11th 3-0 sweep of the year.

“We played one of our best matches of the year, and boy does it feel good to win a hard-fought game by both sides,” Caughey said.

Joaquin Gonzalez led the Warriors with 17 kills and 18 digs, along with two aces and two blocks. Diesel Slade had a “double-dozen” in the win with 12 kills

and 12 digs, while captain and setter Gavin Lohuis was a court general with game-high 44 assists.

Star libero Sebastian McCurry continued his season-long dominance on defense with 41 digs, while also providing consistent serving performances of the day.

“He has a really nice routine when he serves now, which I encourage all players to have, and he follows that routine every time before he serves, which results in consistent serving,” Caughey said.

On Saturday, the boys endured four hours of traffic before arriving at Fontana High School, but despite the long trip and short warm-up time, the Warriors started strong with a 25-18 win in the first set.

The home team Fontana Steelers responded with a win in the second set, 22-25, which provided Carpinteria with a “wake-up” call heading into the third set tied 1-1. The Warriors tightened up, winning the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16 to claim the win 3-1 and secure a spot in the CIF Division 5 Quarterfinals at home against Yucaipa.

Against Fontana, three Warriors finished with double-doubles: Gonzalez finished with 21 kills and 32; Slade had 15 kills and 31 digs; and Zach Isaac had 10 kills and 33 digs. McCurry finished with 35 digs, and Lohuis topped his first-round performance with 52 assists.

Carpinteria’s next matchup, Yucaipa, defeated Nuview Ridge (3-0) and Bellflower (3-0) in the first and second round.

The second-place Carpinteria boys won four events also, with Mateo Handall winning both the 200 and 400 meters with times of 23.63 and 51.77 respectively. Handall was named the outstanding male athlete of the meet for his efforts, and will move onto the CIF Prelims in both events.

Sophomore Wes Chang came in first in the 110-meter high hurdles, and Ben Smith was the final winner for the Warriors with a 10’ personal record in the pole vault.

Belen Herrera, Lela Roberts, Averi Alexander also qualified for the CIF prelims for the girls’ side; Chris Ceja, Juan Trejo, Nathan Carillo and the 4x100 relay team of Wes Chung, Chris Ceja, Brian Mendoza and Matt Garcia qualified on the boys’ side.

Carpinteria hosts the CIF prelims at 11 a.m. on May 7.

Carp-Cate tennis end-of-season showdown

Coming into the final matchup of the year for both teams, both Carpinteria and Cate’s boys tennis teams had claimed league championships, with both teams finishing 8-1 in league play.

Prior to the matchup, Carpinteria hosted the Citrus Coast league individual tournament, and brothers Max and Austin Stone breezed through the first two rounds to set up a sibling-rivalry singles championship.

“They both handled this unique matchup like true professionals and were very complementary of each other’s shots and points,” said Carpinteria Coach Charles Bryant. “I even saw a little hug afterwards which warmed the hearts of all the fans watching the match.”

Austin defeated his younger brother in two sets, but both earned a spot in the CIF Sectionals on May 19.

Cate claimed the doubles championship, and both third-place matches at the TriValley League championship.

When the two teams faced off, Cate showed their depth and strength and pulled away with a 13-5 victory over the visiting Warriors. Despite the overall loss, Carpinteria’s Austin Stone impressed all with a 3-0 showing in singles play.

“Austin Stone is really one of the best players we have faced all season,” Cate Coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin said. “We battled hard against him and I know my team really enjoyed getting to play against him before he graduates this year. Although Austin picked up all three of his sets, I was really impressed how we battled and that we were able to get the other 6 singles sets.”

Carpinteria finishes the regular season 14-5 overall, and claimed a Citrus Coast League championship with a league record of 8-1. Both teams will await their CIF playoff matchups later this week.

Warriors baseball recovers with Senior Day win

Carpinteria came out on the losing side of a back-and-forth battle on the road at Hueneme – who was celebrating their Senior Day – in a game that saw seven lead changes and was decided by an extra inning walk-off hit.

Hueneme came out on top 7-6, and earned second place in the Citrus Coast League, while Carpinteria headed home to prepare for its final game of the year with its own Senior Day matchup against Villanova.

“Gibby Castillo, Zach Mata and Hunter Garcia deserve a tip-of-the-cap for their tremendous efforts this year and in previous years,” said Carpinteria Coach Pat Cooney. “Each of them can be proud of a great body of work.”

Though Carpinteria had been eliminated from the postseason, the team showed that Warrior Spirit Never Dies with a dominant 17-1 sendoff for the seniors, and one final win for the year.

Mata took the mound for the final time in his career, and tossed a complete game win by allowing five hits and striking out nine batters. Garcia finished his career with two RBIs off hits, including a double, while scoring three runs.

Carpinteria track & field hosts league championships

The Warriors hosted the Citrus Coast League Championships at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium, and the team took home wins in eight total events.

The Carpinteria girls came in third and claimed four of the wins, with standout Ainslee Alexander taking three on her own. Alexander won the long jump, triple jump and shot put; she also finished second in the pole vault, matching her personal record of 9’6’’. She will move on to the CIF Division 4 Prelims in all four events and was named Most Valuable Field Athlete of the meet.

Ariana Lounsbury claimed the fourth win for the girls with a new personal record in the discus with a distance of 88’8’’. Lounsbury has set a new personal record 18 times this year – more than any other Warrior athlete.

Erin Otsuki named Athlete of Week, swimmers make postseason

Carpinteria’s Erin Otsuki was recognized as this week’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the week after finishing the season without an individual or a relay loss in both league and nonleague competition.

Otsuki continued her dominance in the water with wins in the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke at the Citrus Coast League Championships at Malibu High School. Otsuki was also part of the relay team – with Giulia Piccoletti, Taylor Classen and Piper Clayton – that rewrote the school record book by over a second.

The boys took first place overall at the championships, while the girls came in close at second place. All in all, seven school records were broken by the end of the final.

“We were ecstatic with the team performance,” said Coach Jon Otsuki. “Really could not have had a better day across the board. It was important for the first couple of relays to get out and set the tone and it could not be scripted any better. The girls came in second not because they were out swam but just out-numbered, they did everything that was asked of them.“ The Warriors will travel to Marguerite Aquatic Center in Mission Viejo on May 5 for preliminary swims Division 3 finals.
