From February to November, she trekked from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., making new friends, visiting relatives she had never met and camping along the way.

Enrollment still open at Family School

The Carpinteria Family School is a leader in the district in social and emotional learning, an emphasis that is now being implemented in all CUSD schools; however, this year, CFS has had lower enrollment in the kindergarten class than past years, as acknowledged by Principal Jaime Persoon of the school-within-a-school on the Canalino campus. CFS has multiple unique aspects to the program including: multiage classrooms, a “small-school” feel, Family Fridays and community building with students staying together in the same grouping from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Carpinteria Union High School class of 1959 will hold a reunion on Friday, June 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District received a brand new 2017 Polaris RGR XP 1000 off road vehicle on April 19, through a donation from the ONE 805 Kick Ash Bash Philanthropy Committee. While the Kern Community Foundation directly paid the $17,895 cost to the philanthropy committee, Cassie Wright owner of Valley Cycle & Motorsports in Bakersfield, is the actual individual donor.

The Polaris was delivered to the station on Walnut Avenue to use for beach and water rescue. It can also easily ride up Franklin Trail and into remote areas, making it a much-needed addition to the Carpinteria Station. Wright lives part time in Montecito and went to the Kick Ash Bash as a sponsor. She was inspired to support the First Responders through a meaningful gift. “It created a great synergy for giving and was an opportunity to help,” said Wright.

Boys & Girls Club to honor soccer team at 35th Annual Kids Auction

On May 19, the United Boys & Girls clubs of Santa Barbara county, carpinteria club will host the 35th Annual kids Auction. each year the organization holds a benefit auction to help raise the funds required to provide free after school services. Following tradition, each year the event committee selects an individual or community group to honor. This year’s honorees are the carpinteria High School boys soccer teammates, for their ciF-Southern Section championship.

“The Boys & Girls club is all about celebrating youth, whether they are club members or not. carpinteria is a special community and one that supports all local nonprofits relentlessly,” said Michael Baker, ceO for the organization.

Don’t dump P.E.

We would love to see the Carpinteria Unified School District say that Physical Education curriculum is important—the minutes of instruction are mandated, so let’s develop a program! However, after this year, there is talk of no longer having a designated P.E. specialist or comprehensive program in our district. Our school is devastated, teachers are sad, parents are in shock and we cannot let this happen. As mothers of boys, educators and kinesthetic learners ourselves, we know how important it is to have movement in our day. When asked, our boys always respond that their favorite subject is P.E. We know that this response echoes most kids’ feelings in our district.

The answer is not to put physical education instruction on the teachers› plates.

We cannot ask overworked teachers to plan another lesson in their week.

Many of the teachers won’t differentiate between “go play outside:” and physical education, where they are actually building on skills at an age-appropriate level, responding to the mandated 100 minutes per 5 days of school. With talk of an extended school day, we must have physical education!

Please advocate on behalf of a comprehensive, standards-based, age-appropriate physical education program in Carpinteria Unified School District.

Our names are Leanne Patterson and Hortensia Rodriguez. We have a cross-cultural and bilingual friendship because of our sons’ enrollment in the Dual Language Immersion program at Canalino. Our sons are content, they have new friends and we already see the benefit of being a part of the program.

Therefore, we ask you to make this program a priority for siblings also. Please adopt a priority for the younger siblings.

One of the goals of the DLI program is to bridge achievement and cultural divides in our community and in our families; it is only logical and necessary for us, the parents, to have our whole family in the dual immersion program. I heard, hopefully a false rumor, that the district was having problems with the Carpinteria Family School, and that it may make some drastic changes in the structure of the program. If changes are going to be made, they should be positive, and with approval of the parents and staff of CFS. There are many reasons why this rumor concerns me. Many years ago, I was on the school board that started CFS, and most importantly, my grandkids have attended CFS. They have been extremely successful because of the educational foundation they received. The administration, teachers and support staff were all wonderful and the educational programs offered are the best. We need to support it and provide additional resources needed.

The Dual Language Immersion Program that is in its beginning stage is also a program that has tremendous potential and should be expanded and improved; instead it is being criticized and offered little or no assistance for improvement.

General educational programs are also excellent; however, my concern that instead of adding good alternatives to the regular programs, we ignore or limit ideas and alternatives to improve education. We should provide options to encourage greater parental and community involvement.

Don’t cut down Carpinteria’s trees

The purpose of my letter is to urge the Sanitation District to redesign their proposed office building on 6th Street. The current design would destroy a lovely small forest ecosystem of nine trees. These include three eucalyptus, four palms and sycamore sucklings. This land was given to the city to be a park, not an office building. However, if an office building must be built, it should be redesigned to keep the trees. There are nesting owls, mating hawks and numerous other birds and creatures making their home in this forest.

The trees provide oxygen for all, as well as a roosting place for our endangered monarchs when they are migrating.

This small forest has provided solace and good energy for Carpinterians for decades. At a time when human activity since 1970 has caused a 50 percent loss of plant and animal species, we should do all we can to support our lovely codwellers in Carpinteria, not destroy them.

The office building should be redesigned to save the trees. The argument that folks may be injured from falling branches is a weak one. Arborists have testified that regular trimming could contain this problem and a cautionary sign could be placed under the trees as well.

To speak up about the trees, come early to the Sanitary District meeting, 5300 6th St., Tuesday, May 1. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. To enjoy the beauty of the trees before the meeting, come at 5 p.m. Keep Carpinteria beautiful! Save the trees on 6th Street!

Cannabis ordinances won’t slow science

It is commendable when scientific insights can be used to help address societal issues. This allows decisions to be fact-based rather than based on opinions. However, the April 12 article, “City extends moratorium on commercial cannabis,” by Debra Herrick (CVN, Vol. 24, No. 29) misses the mark in terms of including science in a discussion. The article includes the public comments of Michael Masterman-Smith, who is described as being head of a cannabis farm, but who is also a scientist working on brain cancer stem cells. He is reported as having made statements that research reveals that “the most aggressive types of cancer might potentially be treatable by cannabinoid therapy,” and he supports commercial cannabis production.

While I wish the best of luck to anyone working on developing new drugs to treat cancer and other diseases, I sincerely hope that the city of Carpinteria does not interpret these public comments as being valid scientific arguments favoring the commercial growing of cannabis. First, the therapeutic potential of cannabis should not be evaluated by someone who has a financial interest in the outcome.

Second, speaking as the Founding Director of the Institute for Stem Cell and

Regenerative Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and as someone intimately familiar with cancer research and drug development, I can unequivocally state that neither the future success of the stem cell field, nor the development of cancer therapeutics, hinges on whether the City of Carpinteria adopts or bans the commercial growing of cannabis.

Whether or not cannabis is grown commercially in Carpinteria is an important and pressing matter that deserves considerable attention and discussion. However, the ultimate decision by the City of Carpinteria will not impact scientific or medical advances, so both proponents as well as opponents would be better served by focusing the discussion elsewhere.

Concerns with quotidian grammar

I am over here in Santa Barbara from England visiting my son who lives here now. I enjoyed reading Donnie Nair’s advice column “Life, Love & Manners” (CVN, Vol. 24, No. 30). Regarding the letter signed Grammar Mom, yes, “between you and I” is annoying. What I particularly dislike however, which has come over to England from America, is the use of “good.” Hear Tiger Woods, on being asked how he played, and he often states “I played real good.” What happened to “really well?” “How are you today? I’m good.” I really dislike that bad use of grammar. What happened to adverbs?

March for their lives

They will never graduate from high school or college. They will never get married or have kids of their own. They will never learn to read or write. We will never know what their full potential would have been or what contributions their character and intelligence would have added to the world. I have a dream that the kids who left their classrooms and walked the streets of Carpinteria in the “March for Our Lives” will one day leave their classrooms again, with the support of their community, to “March for their lives” too—the over half million children in the United States whose lives are ended each year, by the act of abortion.

DLI expansion stymied by school board

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees on April 24 voted to continue its two-classroom kindergarten pilot of the Dual Language Immersion Program for 2018-2019.

Families enrolling for kindergarten next year had demonstrated increased demand for the DLI program, and the school board over the last two meetings considered expanding the program

to three kindergarten classrooms but ultimately decided against expansion.

The program immerses students in Spanish-language instruction, and students in the program graduating from kindergarten will be able to continue in first grade DLI for the 2018-2019 school year.

Delbë D. Solari 3/30/1933–3/9/2018

Delbë D. Solari passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Delbë was born March 30, 1933 in Santa Barbara, Calif. to Lucille and Emmanuel Solari. He was raised in Carpinteria, alongside three siblings, brother Joe and sisters, Irene and Marianne. Delbë attended Carpinteria Union High School where he graduated in 1951 and after a short stint at Cal Berkeley, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea.

In 1955, while stationed in Wyoming, Delbë met the love of his life Mildred “Mickie” Bartos. They were married the following year and this past September, they celebrated their 61st anniversary.

Mickie and Delbë lovingly raised their four children Susanne, Shelbë, Stephanie and Joe while being stationed in Wyoming, Alaska, Virginia and Florida.

her husband of 59 years, Andres Herrera; four daughters Lucy, Laura, Angelica and Christina; ten grandchildren Andrea, Stephanie, Steven, Jeffrey, Jacob, Joshua, Karina, Joseph, Alexa and Matthew; and four great grandchildren Queena, Monique, Evan and Connor.

She dedicated her life to her family, from her husband to her great grandchildren. She has left nieces and nephews with happy childhood memories from being under her care. She enjoyed music, dancing, and took pleasure being in the company of friends and family.

Carpinteria was her home from 1959 through 1977. Her family in Carpinteria includes her brothers Jose, Joaquin and Salvador Ornelas, her brother in law Vicente Herrera, and their extended families, as well as her Gonzalez cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph Mission Chapel on Ash Avenue and 7th Street in Carpinteria. The interment will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Delbë retired from active duty in 1974 as an SMSgt but continued his career as a civil servant physical science technician for the Air Force Technical Applications Center. He transferred to Patrick AFB in 1976, where he worked until his full retirement in 2014 after 62 years of service, and was described by his AFTAC commander as “the hidden backbone of the seismic mission.”

Delbë loved his family time and having PBRs or “Tanqs” (Tanqueray gin, olive juice and two olives) with friends, and he was sometimes allowed to bring limburger cheese into the house. He enjoyed being outside doing yardwork or feeding the local squirrels and blue jays of which he acquired a large following. Delbë was a humble, selfless man of few words, but a man full of love and support, forever putting friends and family before himself.

Delbë is survived by his wife Mickie, children Susanne, Shelbë, Stephanie and Joe, grandchildren Drew and wife Katie, Kathryn and husband Randy, Greg, Taylor, Matthew, Shelbë, Marc, Piper and Finley, great grandson Kale, sons-in-law Brian, Kurt and Nick, daughter-in-law Wendi, sister Marianne Hudack, sister-inlaw Sue Solari, best friends Bill Alexander and Dave Rice, and many nephews, nieces and friends.

A Celebration of Life was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, 505 Grant Ave., Satellite Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, Delbë’s family requests donations be made in his name to Hospice of St. Francis and Holy Apostles Episcopal Church.

City to begin drafting new codes for commercial cannabis

at the april 23 City Council meeting, by unanimous vote, the council agreed to direct staff to research and prepare a draft ordinance amending the Carpinteria Municipal Code concerning commercial cannabis activities. The decision, however, came with several caveats. in terms of sales, the full council agrees that the City of Carpinteria should not allow retail store fronts for purchase of any kind of cannabis, medical or adult-use. in other words, at this time, the Council will not consider provisions for brick and mortar stores within city limits. allowing delivery of medical and recreational marijuana will be considered, with appropriate regulations and standards. For example, a cap will likely be instilled on the number of delivery companies that can operate in the city. a number of councilmembers considered three businesses a possible starting point, while Councilman wade Nomura expressed concern in prematurely capping the number when the city hasn’t seen how this has worked out elsewhere in other cities of a similar size and demographic. Furthermore, Councilman J. Bradley Stein called attention to franchising possibilities, perhaps limiting eligible franchisees to city residents, allowing for close monitoring of who was coming and going from Carpinteria. at this point, the Council agreed that city staff should explore franchising and limiting the number of licenses when preparing the proposed policies concerning delivery.

Distribution presented a somewhat stickier issue for the Council. To be clear, distribution does not concern sale to the public, but what is done in-house— typically in a warehouse setting. The city could regulate cannabis distribution through zone districts, permit types and development standards. in acknowledging the public’s well-voiced desire for a buffer zone, the Council leaned heavily on limiting distribution to the industrial park area, while also implementing conditional use permits and development standards. City Manager Dave Durflinger added that it will be important to make sure that our industrial park, which currently has several well-established noncannabis businesses, does not get gobbled up by cannabis distribution. To address this concern, the city could limit square footage and avoid “mono-businesses” in the industrial park area, Durflinger said. as Community Development Director Steve Goggia put it, “we have a healthy number of businesses in the industrial park now, we don’t want to muscle them out for one industry.”

Discussion also focused on evaluating and potentially restricting the use of volatile materials in favor of non-volatile materials, though city staff pointed out that non-volatile materials are controlled and safe under city regulations. a concern about pesticides and environmental contamination was also voiced by the Council. Finally, Nomura questioned if medicinal testing should not have different standards and potentially different zoning. The Council instructed the city staff to take these considerations into their proposal for amending the municipal code. in consideration of cannabis manufacturing, which includes the processing of food and products like gummy bears, lollipops and baked goods, the council again leaned towards the industrial park for limited zoning.

Finally, the Council directed the city staff to explore the extent to which taxes and fees can be imposed on commercial cannabis activities. in constructing amendments to the municipal codes, the city will consider what can be taxed and what the ramifications are for such taxes.

Fees will be established through a staterequired fee study that determines the cost to the city to perform services such as permits and licensing. The Council was clear that taxes and fees are a given.

The city should benefit economically wherever possible with the introduction of this new industry in the local economy.

Disturbances

The seals were frightened into the ocean by several people walking on the beach, and/or right through the rookery. Due to the high pelican count, when the pelicans fly off, most of the seals also disperse.

Natural History Notes

a number of whales were sighted, including calves, and pods of dolphins and there were as many as 160 pelicans spotted in the rookery this week. There were also cormorants, sea gulls and small, brown sea gulls. The brown pelican is an unmistakable bird of coastal waters. Groups of brown pelicans fly low over the waves in single file, flapping and gliding in unison. Their feeding behavior is spectacular, as they plunge headlong into the water in pursuit of fish and come to the surface with a fish in their bill. They tilt the bill down to drain water out of their pouch, then toss their head back to swallow. Brown pelicans will scavenge at times, and will become tame when approaching fishermen for handouts. The kelp bed and waters contain many of the birds’ source of fish. The current abundance of this species in the United States represents a success story for conservationists, who succeeded in halting the use of DDT and other persistent pesticides here. as recently as the early 1970s, the brown pelican was seriously endangered. Brown pelicans only weigh about 8 pounds, but can have a wing span of 7 feet. anacapa island is a huge nesting ground.

Pushback from Montecito

Not so fast with fast-track rebuilding, leaders tell the county

By Melinda Burns On May 15, the county Board of Supervisors will consider amending the county zoning ordinance to streamline and speed the gargantuan task of rebuilding Montecito in the wake of a catastrophic debris flow.

It’s all in the spirit of helping 216 families whose homes were destroyed or damaged on the fateful morning of Jan. 9 to get their lives back soon as possible.

But in the spirit of Pearl Chase, the legendary Santa Barbaran who helped transform the city after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in 1925, Montecito’s leaders are asking the county to hold off on voting so soon.

“This is a Pearl Chase moment for resiliency,” Joe Cole, chairman of the Montecito Planning Commission and a 40-year resident of the wealthy, unincorporated community, said. “The county needs an overall strategy that would include a threat analysis, early warning monitoring, slope protections and neighborhood zoning based on actual hazard maps.”

Citing concerns for neighborhood safety, privacy and aesthetics, the commission voted 4-0 last week to recommend that the county postpone any ordinance amendments for debris flow victims until after the Federal Emergency Management Agency finishes a “recovery map” of the devastated area.

“We need to use FEMA mapping to figure out where the real risks are,” Cole said, noting that the county has advised homeowners to hold off on rebuilding until the maps come out. The proposed zoning amendments don’t “move the ball forward as far as making the community safer as a whole,” Cole said.

But the fast-track schedule is already in place. On Wednesday, the county Planning Commission will make its own recommendations to the county Board of Supervisors. If the board approves the amendments next month, they will go into effect on June 14, about the same time the FEMA map is expected to be released.

The map will delineate the boundaries of new “hazard zones” in Montecito during 100-year storms; and it will show projected floodwater elevations. Waiting for FEMA could push a vote on the ordinance amendments well into September, county officials said – and for Supervisor Das Williams, who helped draft the amendments, that’s too long.

“I’m totally scratching my head,” he said. “The Montecito Association and the majority of people at the forums have been asking for the county to help them rebuild. If all of these property owners are rebuilding through our normal discretionary process, it would take many, many years. It would bankrupt a lot of these small landowners. It would be tantamount to exiling many of them.

“I will admit that this requires us to have a bit of a change in our attitude. It requires us to think about safety as an incredible planning consideration, more important than some aesthetic consideration.”

Mortgage on a missing house

At last week’s Montecito Planning Commission meeting, Jacques Marcillac of 220 Olive Mill Road, whose wife, Allison, is executive director of the Montecito Association, spoke in favor of the proposed amendments because, he said, the clock is ticking on the insurance money his family receives for temporary housing.

“We need to get back in our house,” Marcillac said, adding, “I guess I’m the owner of dirt; the house is no longer there.

“I have four daughters and they need a home. By the time the map comes out, it’s going to be six months from the debris flow. We only have about 17 months of additional living expenses that are included in our insurance. After that time, we have to pay for a mortgage on a house that doesn’t exist, and a rent for my family of six.

“The priority that should be higher than anything else should be getting Montecito back to where it was before Jan. 9.”

Among a handful of letters to the commission echoing these sentiments, Sharon and Jason Hughes of Montecito wrote, “As a member of a compassionate community, we would like to make the usually daunting timeline streamlined for those who lost homes on 1/9.”

But the commission said it seeks to balance the needs of neighbors who lost their homes with the needs of neighbors who, as the recovery proceeds, might find themselves living next to a much higher building or one that has been moved closer to them. In a hypothetical scenario, Cole showed how a 30-foot-high house, pre-debris flow, could potentially be rebuilt nine feet higher with minimal review, under the proposed amendments.

Say there is mud on the property four feet high, Cole said. If the FEMA’s new floodwater elevation is set at that level, the county would require the first floor of the new house to be two feet higher than the four feet of mud. In addition, Cole said, the roof itself could be raised by three feet because of a 10 percent “bonus” in interior height that is allowed under the existing like-for-like ordinance. And it could all happen with a simple building permit, no notice to neighbors and no right of appeal.

Tracking the damage

As of today, 181 homes in Montecito remain red-tagged or yellow-tagged because they were damaged on Jan. 9, county records show. Red means they are not safe to enter and yellow means that only limited entry is safe. Another 35 homes were completely destroyed by the river of mud and boulders.

In all, that’s 216 damaged or destroyed homes, or five percent of the 4,400 homes in Montecito. And that’s not counting 59 red- and yellow-tagged homes that have been upgraded to green tags since Jan. 9, meaning it is now safe to live in them.

(Even five percent is a significant hit for a small community; in Santa Barbara, five percent would be 1,770 homes.)

In addition, about 117 garages, guest homes, bridges, pool cabanas and com-

mercial buildings in Montecito remain destroyed or damaged.

The Thomas Fire hit Carpinteria Valley homeowners harder than the debris flow that followed. County records show that six homes and 14 accessory buildings, primarily on Gobernador Canyon and Toro Canyon roads, remain red-tagged because of fire damage. One home in the valley remains yellow-tagged because of debris flow damage; it’s on Via Real.

Since Jan. 9, records show, the county has issued zero permits to debris flow victims for complete buildings, 19 permits for minor repairs and 119 demolition permits.

After the Tea Fire of 2008, a county “like-for-like” ordinance successfully streamlined the rebuilding of many of the 210 homes that burned in the foothills of Montecito and Santa Barbara.

If the owners built back essentially the same house in the same location, they were exempt from time-consuming and expensive zoning permits, design review and neighborhood appeals.

But a debris flow can wreak more havoc than a fire. On Jan. 9, a surging river of mud and boulders came down the mountainside above Montecito, jumping creeks, carving new creek beds, blocking bridges and swamping entire neighborhoods. County regulations require a 50-foot setback from the bank for new homes near creeks. Also, new homes must be built at least two feet above base flood elevations.

The proposed like-for-like ordinance amendments would allow zoning permit and design review exemptions for victims of debris flows – even if they have to elevate their homes on top of four feet of mud, or they have to move their home because the creek itself has moved. If the amendments are approved, such projects could proceed with a building permit from the county – that is, with minimal review and no notice to neighbors.

“For safety reasons, we don’t want them to build in the same spot,” Williams said. “I can take responsibility for this idea, whether people love it or hate it.”

‘Unprecedented situation’

Montecito leaders say there is too much chaos and confusion and too little information to proceed full steam ahead right now with any ordinance changes.

For starters, they note, the whole community is potentially at risk of another debris flow for the next three to five years, depending on how fast the vegetation comes back on the bare and brown slopes

of the Thomas Fire burn area above town.

“If everybody moves right back now, it’s going to be dangerous,” Cole said.

“I don’t know if the county is thinking about that.”

The Montecito Association, an influential homeowners’ group, voted 6-4 earlier this month to ask for a delay in a final county vote on the zoning amendments until after the FEMA map comes out.

Speaking to the commission last week, Cori Hayman, an association board member, said there was “no correct answer” for how to proceed.

“We are under an unprecedented situation with a complicated, costly, emotionally difficult, lengthy recovery,” she said.

The association board, Hayman said, was “specifically concerned that this commission and the public would not have sufficient information with which to make informed recommendations.”

Four members of the Montecito Board of Architectural Review also weighed in at last week’s commission meeting, arguing for more design review, not less.

Why “perpetuate a bad building” under the like-for-like amendments when the review board could improve it and “make sure the community is well-served?” asked board member Bob Kupiec. The board and the commission could schedule extra meetings to speed the rebuilding effort, he said.

In an interview, Kupiec, an architect and Montecito resident, noted that the City of Santa Barbara found its identity after the 1925 earthquake through an intentional redesign with Spanish colonial architecture and red-tiled roofs.

“The reinvention of Santa Barbara did not happen by accident,” Kupiec said. “Nothing’s changed. The reason there’s a board of architectural review is to safeguard your community. If you start moving buildings around on a site, indiscriminately, you have effects on your neighbors.

“I realize people have gone through trauma and lost your house. But you have a commitment to your neighbors to do the right thing. There’s no silver bullet out there.”

The commission and the architectural board agreed that exemptions from zoning permits and design review should be retained for “true” like-for-like rebuilding in Montecito – if, say, a property owner proposes no changes in elevation, size or exterior design.

But if the county Board of Supervisors decides to go forward now with the “likefor-like” amendments, the commission said, they should make some of them more restrictive – for example, by requiring design review for property owners who want to change the exterior design of their rebuilt homes in any way. The proposed amendments would require such review only if the new exterior is “substantially different.”

In addition, the commission said, the county should in some cases eliminate the 10 percent height bonus for homes that are rebuilt at higher elevations. And the county should require both design review and zoning permits for homes that are moved out beyond the mandatory 50-foot setback from a creek bank, commissioners said. Otherwise, they said, property owners – including speculators – could build anywhere they wanted, potentially intruding on a neighbor’s privacy or obstructing public and private views of the ocean and the mountains.

“We want to move forward expeditiously, but also judiciously,” said Commissioner Susan Keller. “I want to be sure we both try to help those homeowners who are suffering, as well as avoid any abuse of the system.”

three ribbon cutting ceremonies on Wednesday, April 25, marked significant milestones in the Carpinteria unified School district’s $90 million measure u project schedule. Canalino elementary School, Carpinteria middle School and Carpinteria high School campuses will each be receiving new, factory-built Gen 7 modular buildings, to be assembled in place over the summer and winter breaks during the remaining months of 2018 and into 2019.

Shaw Contracting inc. of Carpinteria has been awarded the contract for foundation work on all three campuses, and plans call for the delivery of the Gen 7 buildings to begin this summer. the work at ChS and CmS will likely continue into early 2019, as the new modular buildings have to be craned-in in pieces over existing buildings while the high school campus is closed, and significant work is expected at the middle school to alter the track and move an existing sewer line. the Gen 7 buildings going in at Canalino are scheduled to be ready for students and staff by october.

Additional work to be completed at the high school during the summer break includes new walkways along existing classroom blocks to eliminate the approximately one inch-high ledges in the thresholds of the rooms, which violate the Americans with disabilities Act as they obstruct wheelchair access. Restroom renovations and roofing work on the cafeteria and administrative buildings will also be completed. building projects slated for Aliso elementary School are temporarily on hold as planners await a revised 100-year flood plain map to be issued from FemA. measure u planners anticipate changes to the federal agency’s flood plain assessment for Carpinteria as work on the highway 101 overpasses and lane additions reaches completion in 2019. First responders from public safety agencies across Santa barbara County know more about how to communicate with people who have autism after attending a training on April 18, at CenCal health in Santa barbara. the Autism Society, in collaboration with the Santa barbara County Sheriff’s office, hosted two training sessions taught

by Officer Brian Herritt, a private consultant and retired police officer. Herritt demonstrated important skills on how to identify, interact and confront members of the community on the autism spectrum. Officer Herritt said, “I am very blessed to have the insight of both a police officer and a parent of a child with autism. my goal and the goal of the Autism Society was to provide our first responders with the awareness and training they so desperately need.”

Sheriff brown, who has a son with autism, is also well-versed in the nuances and challenges that autism brings, especially during interactions with law

enforcement. “My hope is that the first responders who attended, now have a better understanding of this bewildering disability, and that they are better equipped to recognize it, and to interact with those who have it,” brown said. marcia eichelberger of the Autism Society agreed the training is critical for law enforcement who come into contact with people who have autism.

“It’s vital that our first responders have a clear understanding of some of the overarching characteristics of autism so that our loved ones’ needs are understood and their safety is protected,” said Eichelberger. “It’s very easy to misinterpret things you aren’t familiar with. behavior that might be overlooked or shrugged off in a young child may elicit a different reaction coming from an adolescent or an adult. the safety of the people we serve and their families is our number one priority in offering these free trainings.”

Engineering success: Aliso School builds its STEAM program

Teachers and administrators at Aliso Elementary School have enacted a shared vision of a science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) program that will catapult their campus to the level of a “STEAM School,” fully integrated with Next Generation Science Standards.

With interest in students developing key foundational skills that are essential to participate in a fast-paced digital world, Aliso established a series of goals that they began to meet in Spring of 2017 when the school distributed Chromebooks and developed the Exploration Lab, significantly increasing accessibility to technology for students.

After attending a Google Summit last June, Principal Dr. Michelle Fox and teachers Ryan Francisco and Brett Weiberg, along with Amanda Ochs and Melissa Tramel, formed the STEAM committee at the start of the 2017/2018 school year. With the help of a Carpinteria Education Foundation grant and parent donations, Aliso was able to purchase further needed items for the Exploration Lab. Several teachers have now attended a STEAM conference and another group will head to the next Google Summit this summer. Moreover, CUSD has equipped every classroom with technology tools that make the integration of new technology easier.

“We wanted to provide our students with real-life, hands-on learning experiences that would allow them more opportunities to work collaboratively with their peers developing their skills in communication, problem-solving and critical thinking,” said fifth-grade teacher Francisco. It’s not only technical abilities that students are cultivating, they are also developing self-confidence and grit.

“We are seeing more teamwork, working together on a vision and collaboration as they work to accomplish a goal. They are excited about learning, more comfortable speaking and explaining their thoughts to their peers and to their teachers.”

Additionally, students are showing strides in utilizing strategies for independent learning. “When we provide a new challenge in our Exploration Lab, children often head to the library looking for books on the subjects that they were introduced to.” At home, students are talking to their parents about STEAM activities that they did at school.

Aliso is also integrating STEAM into professional development, core curriculum and wrap-around services.

“Increasing teacher knowledge is crucial to ongoing success. We have been doing a lot with technology this year and with the district’s adoption of a new science program next year, we hope to continue building our capacity in that area,” stated Fox. “What is also exciting is that our after-school program is working on

STEAM skills too,” Fox added, “ so students have the opportunity to apply these skills in different settings and really work to expand their wisdom and experience.”

In partnership with Aliso’s STEAM committee, Procore offered a series of onsite workshops for fifth-graders, in which company team members led a hands-on, tech-based activity utilizing their original Brick by Brick software and Lego activity set. The workshop simulates the steps for project management of a construction, design and engineering project. Students are equipped with a laptop, an iPad and Legos and must race against the clock to complete their project while role playing different key positions in the development process.

“Procore.org is excited to partner with local schools to help develop career exploration for students and support the local teaching staff in developing new ways of broadening students’ horizons,” said Darryl Kysar, director of Procore.org/. In fact, Brick by Brick is being played across the country in schools and after-school programs.

“We saw this trip (to Procore) as an opportunity to expose our students to some very impressive things that are taking place in their city. We also wanted to give them the idea that many of the things they have been learning through STEAM integration at Aliso could be applied to real life situations,” Francisco said. “The trip was also a chance to inspire students with a vision of where all of their hard work

Indeed, students expressed excitement and inspiration after visiting Procore, with several saying that they want to work there someday or hold one of the roles that they practiced during the Brick

“One student, for example, claimed that they enjoyed being the construction manager because they wanted to, ‘make sure everyone followed the rules and got paid on time,’ while others simply loved to build and design or give guidance to others. It was really awesome to see all

of this take place. It was also really cool to see how many women Procore has in leadership roles who were also there working with our students. I feel that was a powerful image for all of our young and inspiring students to see.”

Funding to sustain the STEAM program however, will be an ongoing issue.

“Competing programs within the district and other priorities may limit our attention and ability to build a successful STEAM program,” said Fox, “Finding funding to support the program down the road may also be a challenge.”

Children’s Day comes to the Alcazar Theatre

On Sunday, April 29, the Alcazar Theatre will open its doors to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. for a grand celebration of Children’s Day/Book Day. The event is in collaboration with the 90th Anniversary of the Alcazar Theatre.

The bilingual, free event will feature family friendly and kid-focused performances, including Cruz Dance and Entertainment and Mariachi de mi Tierra. Volunteers will lead arts and crafts activities, face painting and a book giveaway on the theater’s patio.

Howard School Auction supports school and community

On Saturday, April 21, the Howard School held its annual benefit auction, this year with a Hawaiian theme. “The Howard School transformed into a Hawaiian oasis where we could both support the school and our community,” said Angie Miller, first-grade teacher and event co-chair. With the concept and details overseen by Cindy Terry, decorations chair, the courtyard setting was bursting with vibrant decorations ranging from handmade giant paper hibiscus flowers, to a tiki bar, palm-thatched roof, “aloha” selfie frames and a longboard surf wall.

Guests were drawn into the event by a reclaimed wood fountain built by Bill Green and positioned at the entrance way, which led guests by Howard students playing ukulele music under a rainbow flower-covered archway. Lush tropical plants from Piñata Bella, live orchids from Westerlay Orchids, shells and décor from

Angels and wine barrels from Santa Barbara Winery filled the space with touches of a Pacific paradise. For edible delights, guests feasted on pupus, fruit islands and Hawaiian-fusion platters from The Food Liaison and Chef Ricky Rossignol, followed by ice cream cones by Rori’s Artisanal Creamery.

“After all of the trials and tribulations that we’ve had as a community, we wanted to have a fun event to celebrate our school community,” said Jennifer Gonzalez, kindergarten teacher and event co-chair. “We went into it thinking that small businesses were really tapped out and we didn’t want to ask anyone to over-extend themselves financially. So many families pitched in endless hours, and in spite of the major losses local businesses endured, with some even being closed for over a month this past holiday season, the community came together to support the school. It took a village but we ended up going above and beyond our fundraising goal.”

Hearty breakfast sandwich

chef Randy Randy GRaham How do you make hearty breakfast sandwiches? Start with rich, cheesy Welsh Rabbit on perfectly toasted English muffins. Then, add a fried egg, a slice of ripe tomato and some fresh spinach—that’s how you do it!

I like to add a slice of smoked ham Tofurkey to my sandwiches. Substitute a deli slice of ham if you prefer. Either way, it makes for a hearty meal.

2 large ripe tomatoes (¼ inch slices) 4 ounces baby spinach 4 deli slices smoked ham Tofurkey (optional)

Directions:

Make Welsh Rabbit according to the directions below. Toast the English muffins and set aside.

While the muffins are in the toaster, fry the eggs to taste (I like mine over easy) in the Earth Balance spread. Cover eggs and set aside.

Assemble the sandwiches by layering two tablespoons of the Welsh Rabbit on the bottom half of each muffin. Place a slice or two of tomato on top of that. Place an ounce of spinach on top of the tomatoes and lay a slice of Tofurkey on top of that. Layer another two tablespoons of Welsh Rabbit on top of the Tofurkey.

Place the top half of the muffins on each sandwich and press down gently. Serve immediately.

Warriors hold Rangers to one run in League opener loss

The Carpinteria High School softball team began Frontier League play, hosting rival Nordhoff on April 23. With one run in the second inning, the visiting Rangers held off the warriors and walked off the diamond with a 1-0 victory. The loss puts the Warriors at 8-4 overall and 1-2 in League play.

Although Carpinteria got off to a good start this year, and had a strong finish last year—advancing to the second round of the CIF-SS Division VI Softball Championships before falling to The Webb Schools of Claremont—it looks as though this season’s quest for the Frontier League title will be a dogfight. “It is a tough league with Nordhoff, us and Grace Brethren, it’s pretty good pitching and defense, that’s the way it’s going to be, (it will be) about pitching and making plays at the defensive end…,” said Warriors coach Henry Gonzales. The Rangers’ win puts them second in the Frontier at 3-1 behind Grace Brethren at 2-0.

Nordhoff pushed the game’s only run when senior Courtney Haapanen’s single to center drove in junior Sidney Wimpee.

However, some good defense by Carpinteria was able to keep it a one-run game, as Ranger junior Taylor Erickson was caught off third on a ground out in the top of the third. The ensuing “pickle” led to a Warrior double play, and when junior Angela Zirpolo’s soft liner to second was squeezed safely away by senior Mikayla Blair, the score remained 1-0. “I

thought we played well defensively… I thought overall we played solidly,” said Gonzales.

In the meantime, the Warriors had difficulty mustering any kind of offense against Nordhoff hurler Wimpee in the first three innings. They were able to keep the score at 1-0 in the top of the fourth, when junior Jasylyn Richardson’s throw from left field was cut off by senior Raquel Cordero, whose relay to fellow senior catcher Sam Saenz (8) led to Rangers sophomore Morgan Albertsen being tagged at the plate for the final out. But Wimpee would keep the Carpinteria bats quiet, ending up with double-digit strikeouts and one walk for the game.

Senior pitcher Amanda Blair also had a fine outing, pitching all seven innings for the Warriors and giving up just one run. Amanda got one of the three hits for Carpinteria in the bottom of the seventh, but ended the game stranded at first. In a season full of interruptions for many of the local schools with the fire and debris flow disaster, evacuations and rains, Gonzales encountered another distraction during the week. “Five of our starters were in New York all week, they were on a school trip, so those five didn’t practice all week,” explained the longtime coach.

Despite the minor setback, Gonzales was pleased with the team’s performance.

“I was happy with our effort, I was pleased with the overall focus…,” he said. The Warriors host Malibu, Tuesday, May 1, with the first pitch on campus at 3:30 p.m.

April 19 – The Carpinteria High School track team was swept by Foothill Tech in dual meet action with the boys falling 98 to 38 and the girls, 84-52. Shaya Alexander won the long jump and triple jump with personal records in both jumps—15 feet, 11.75 inches in the long jump and 34 feet, six inches in the triple jump. Yvette Zamora swept the hurdle races, winning the 100 meter race in 19.25 seconds and the 300 meter race in 51.92 seconds. Marin MacDonald won the shot put with a P.R. of 30 feet, 8.25 inches. Victor Rinaldi won the 200 in his first race at that distance, finishing with a time of 23.59. Rinaldi also won the 400 in 52.30, deviating from his usual middledistance efforts. Roderick Hutchinson won the long jump with a personal record of 20 feet, 2.25 inches, and Isaac De Alba did the same in the shot put with another personal record of 41 feet, 1.25 inches.

April 21 – The Carpinteria High School track team hosted the 2018 Santa Barbara County Championships where the girls finished eighth overall and the boys ninth.

San Marcos won both divisions. Meanwhile, the Cate School girls finished fifth and the Ram boys 14th. Yvette Zamora finished first for the Warriors in the girls 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.38, while Roderick Hutchinson took third in the boys long jump for Carpinteria. Isabela Montes de Oca finished second in the girls 800 meterwith a time of 2:24.29 and also took second in the 1600 meter for Cate. The Rams’ Rivers Sheehan took second in the Girls Triple Jump with a mark of 35 feet, 6.5 inches, and the Warriors’ Shaya Alexander took third in the event with a 34 foot, eight inch attempt. Carpinteria took second in the Girls 4 x 400 Relay with a time of 4:22.97, and Cate took third in the Girls 4 x 100 Relay, finishing the race in 50.94 seconds.

Tennis

April 191 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated Santa Clara in a Frontier League match, 16-2. “In singles today, Myles Morgan went 3-0 and looked sharp as he won a revenge match against the Saints Number-two player,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Jeremy Saito went 2-0, and in doubles Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika went 2-0, as did Jackson Phillips/Esteban Zapata. J.R. Hajducko went 2-0 pairing up first with Steve Poulos and then with Rafa Lopez.

Sam Castillo/Abraham Hernandez won their only set 6-0. “Assistant coach, Jeff Saito, has been doing a great job with them, and they are really getting a lot stronger and are starting to challenge for some starting spots, which is keeping us playing at a higher level in practices,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Frontier League.

April 20 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat St. Bonaventure in a Frontier League match, 16-2. In singles Jeremy Saito went 3-0 and did not lose a game. Myles Morgan also went 3-0 which included a “golden set” in his first-round match, not dropping a single point in the set. “Carlos Costilla went 2-1 and finished strong,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In doubles, Luke Nahooikaika/Cameron Gralewski went 3-0, as did Solomon Nahooikaika/Kirby Zapata. “Jackson Phillips/Ian McCurry went 2-1, and after a slower than normal start came on strong” explained Bryant, whose team is now 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Frontier League.

April 241 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost to Laguna Blanca in a non-league match, 11-7. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika went 3-0 and looked sharp and energetic throughout their three sets,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Luke Nahooikaika/Cameron Gralewski went 2-1, while in singles Jeremy Saito won Carpinteria’s only two points. “Carlos Costilla had a great last set and Myles Morgan had a tough tiebreak loss,” said Bryant. Even with the loss, the Warriors remain 6-0 in the Frontier League.

April 191 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team met rivals Bishop Diego in Santa Barbara, falling to the Cardinals 3-1. Number six Jack Gay, as a setter, finished the night with 31 assists and seven kills. “Go-to middle blocker number-three

Libero number five Jiovani Arciniega added three aces and 15 digs, while number-nine opposite hitter Gabriel Ahedo came up with 18 digs. “The Warriors were getting comfortable with a new lineup due to an injury versus Bishop, however, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cardinals,” explained Garcia. Carpinteria’s overall record is 7-5 and Tri-Valley League record is 6-3.

April 23 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team went the distance with Bishop Diego in a five set match, falling to the Cardinals by a score of three games to two. “Number seven outside hitter Liam Slade played well and ended with 11 kills, 10 digs,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Opposite number six Jack Gay came away with 14 kills and two blocks. Middle blocker number three Ben Medel added another 11 kills and three blocks. Libero Number five Jiovani Arciniega had 23 digs.

“Bishop did a good job of resorting to their go to outside hitter to seal deal, winning in a close and competitive game, ending at 14-16,” said Garcia.

April 24 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team beat the Malibu Sharks with match scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 28-26. “Seniors Jiovani Arciniega, Ben Medel, Elias Mochel, Anthony Pena, Steven Urrutia, Leo Bernal and Bryan Alavez competed in their last Frontier League home game of their high school careers. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Outside hitter, number four Anthony Pena added 10 kills and seven digs. Opposite number six Jack Gay added another 10 kills and three blocks. Middle blocker number three Ben Medel yielded seven kills and three blocks. “Libero number five Jiovani Arciniega was aggressive back row, helping the Warriors win the game with 25 digs,” said Garcia.

Boys golf

April 191 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team competed against Villanova who came in first with a 452 and Santa Paula who was second with a 453 at the third tournament of the Frontier league season at Elkins Ranch Course in Fillmore. The Warriors lowest score was a 95 by Jacob Dertche. “Tristan Kelly had the second-lowest score for the Warriors, a 98, earning himself a double cheeseburger and impressing coach Chris Cochrane with his golf debut,” said Carpinteria coach Chris Cochrane who offered dinner if Kelly could go under 100. “Breaking a 100 on a tough course after only playing for two months is awesome—I thought for sure I’d keep the burger money in my wallet,” explained Cochrane. Villanova’s Sixten Sahle, an exchange student from Gothenburg, Sweden, came in first with an 82.

Baseball

April 18 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team lost to Grace Brethren, 5-0.

“Warrior ace Chase Mayer faced Grace Brethren ace Pierson Ohl, and the hurlers dominated for the first four innings,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. The Warriors got the game’s first base runner in the fourth inning when Noah Nuño drew a oneout walk. “Chase and catcher Toby Spach were great,” exclaimed Cooney. “They’re best pals, so it’s easy for them to get in sync and then to keep hitters off balance,” he added. The loss puts Carpinteria at 4-8 overall on the year, and 1-6 in the Tri-Valley League. Grace Brethren improves to 8-7 on the year, and 4-1 in the Tri-Valley League.

April 20 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell to Grace Brethren, 7-0.

“Junior lefty Noah Nuño was effective and efficient in the first two innings, but with two outs and nobody on in the third, the Lancers scored five and ended his day,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. Freshman righty Miles Souza came on in relief and surrendered one run over the final four frames. “Vance Keiser came up with a clean hit in the second inning, but the Warriors managed just six baserunners on the day and had a runner at third just once,” explained Cooney. The win puts Grace Brethren at 10-7 overall and 5-1 in the Tri-Valley League. Carpinteria drops to 4-10 overall and 1-7 in the TVL. The Warriors play a make-up game Saturday (April 28) at home versus Santa Ynez.

April 23 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team made the long journey to Cabrillo’s Don McIntyre Field for a non-league evacuation make-up game, coming away with a 9-1 win. “The Conqs (Conquistadores) scored first on a solo home run in the first inning, but Warrior lefty Chase Mayer was dominant from then on as he scattered three hits and struck out six en route to victory,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. Senior shortstop Dominic Sturdivan had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Noah Nuño tallied three hits on the day and Toby Spach scored twice. Miles Souza and Vance Keiser had two hits apiece. “In the big picture, it’s always a pleasure for the Warriors to get together with the Conquistadores,” said Cooney whose team improves to 5-10 overall. Carpinteria has faced John Osborne-coached Cabrillo for the past 22-consecutive seasons.

The Rams will play Dos Pueblos again on Friday (April 27) for Cate’s Family Weekend.

For seniors Brie Walker, Julia Farner, Hailey Panzer and Margaux Vitols, the game was their last athletic match against Thacher. Walker led the way with five goals and four assists, while Daphne McKeefry notched four goals and two assists. Maddie Erickson chipped in three goals and two assists, and Mia Foster and Tessa Denison each had a goal. Liza Borghesani collected five saves. The team plays their next game on Friday, April 27, against Dos Pueblos.

April 18 – The Cate School swim team fell in their dual meet versus Villanova. In the 200 meter medley relay Victor Vasquez, Kaiser Ke, Andre Pincott and Marcos Brasil finished first with a CIF consideration time. The swimmers also finished first in the 200 meter freestyle relay. Brasil finished first in the 50 freestyle, while Vasquez won the 100 backstroke. Pincott and freshman Jet Ochoa finished first and second in the 100 butterfly, both with season best times. In the 100 Free Brasil and Ke finished first—Brasil with a season’s best time. The Rams had several missing team members due to travel and illness. The girls marked in the JV competition with Izzy Dewell and Molly Dorion finishing first and second in the 200 Freestyle, both with season best times. Dewell also finished first in the JV 100 Free.

April 19 – The Cate School boys tennis team travelled to Nordhoff for a battle to determine who would stay atop the Tri-Valley League, but came up short in a 10-8 loss to the Rangers. Cate’s number-one singles player Ethan Ha remained undefeated, winning all three sets, while Cate’s number-one doubles, Charlie Morris/Devin Pai also swept. Teaming up for the first time this season, Cate’s Number-two doubles, Joseph Thomassen/Parker May also won two of three sets. Nordhoff took the last two sets for a 10-8 win. The Rams are now 5-6 overall and 5-2 in League.

April 18 – The Cate School baseball team scored seven runs in the first three innings to beat Villanova, 8-4 in Ojai. “William Deardorff had a great day at the plate, going two-for-two with two singles,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto of the freshman, who also had two sacrifice flies and three stolen bases on the day. Junior Ethan Cassulo had two hits for Cate, as did senior Patrick Armstrong. Junior Jack Deardorff had a single and stole two bases as well, and junior McCarthy Willet and senior Emily Burns each had a single. Sophomore pitcher Dalton Phillips picked up the win for Cate, going 6 and 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking four. The win makes Cate 1-2 in Frontier League play and 5-3 overall.

April 201 – The Cate School baseball team improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in Frontier League play, beating Villanova by a 9-1 score. Junior Ethan Cassulo had three hits for Cate, while senior Emily Burns chipped in two of her own. Senior Patrick Armstrong and junior Jack Deardorff each had a double. Sophomores Dalton Phillips and Scott Holmes also singled for the Rams. Jack Deardorff picked up the win on the mound for Cate, going six innings and allowing just one run, giving up five hits while striking out eight. Freshman Daniel Panadero made his pitching debut with a perfect seventh inning.

The Cate doubles team of senior Charlie Morris/ sophomore Devin Pai clinched the win for the Rams. “With the score at 9-8, Morris/Pai pulled out a 7-6 win for the decisive set and a sweep for them on the day,” said Rams coach Jason Ebin. Cate picked up one more set from the doubles team of sophomore Parker May/junior Charles Xie. Cate finishes regular season play on Friday, April 28, when Carpinteria comes to Cate Mesa.

April 19 – The Cate School boys volleyball team lost to Foothill Tech, 3-0 with game scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-10. “No excuses, Foothill Tech played a great match, we didn’t—it was just one of those nights,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Sophomore Theo Mack registered 11 Kills, one block, eight digs and two service aces. Junior Cullen Barber had six kills, one block, eight digs and two service aces and fellow junior Carson Williams notched two kills and a block. Meanwhile, freshman Albert Barber contributed 11 digs and a service ace. Cate’s record is now 7-3.

The day the island shook

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham It started like any other day: I led a kayak tour on Santa Cruz Island, getting folks dialed in with their paddling gear and giving a kayak briefing before launching them off the beach at Scorpion Anchorage.

Spring time on the islands is a dualedged sword. There are rolling green marine terraces, island wildflowers and plenty of kayaking trips, but it’s also the toughest, most challenging time to paddle out there. Residual winter swells comboup with perpetual northwest winds with lots of days blowing a gale. A lot of those days don’t allow access into the sea caves, which are the main draw for folks traveling to one of the least-visited National Parks in North America.

Not this day though. Paddling conditions were nice on April 10, 2018: calm, glassy water, no swell and no winds.

That was until 12:30 p.m. Always anticipating the worst wind conditions, I decided to shoot my group up to Cavern Point to beat any northwest wind that might increase in the afternoon. After that we would work our way back to the southeast. I had 13 folks and a new assistant guide with me. As always, I staged everyone away from the edges of the cliffs. I never know when a rock fall may occur. Like all the islands, the rock is volcanic with multiple, countless seeps.

The rock is weather-beaten and heavily wave-battered. The rock is always brittle.

I’ve seen seabirds dislodge rock and send it falling into the water.

As soon as we pulled into Cavern Point with its sheer 200-foot-tall cliffs, the rock came down on the west wall. Rock fall out there picks up steam, big boulders hitting ledges and hurdling outward. In this instance, there was a lot of tonnage coming down, but it was the sound of it which made it so impressive.

Needless to say, by the looks on everyone’s faces, they were all a little rattled.

However, once the slide finished no one blinked when I said we’re still going inside Cavern Point Cave. At this point, I didn’t know a 5.3 magnitude earthquake had occurred on the south side of Santa Cruz Island—the largest, most diversified

island off the coast.

I took everyone the entire 360 feet inside the cave. However, on the exit, I paddled out first and kept an eye on the cliffs above. From there, I waved everyone out of the dank grotto. That’s when I heard lots of chatter on my handheld radio about multiple rock slides in various locations around the windswept isle.

That’s when I knew it was an earthquake.

Everyone was notified on the water, with the park ranger scurrying across the southeast end of the island making certain all day trippers and campers were accounted for. They were. There was talk of aftershocks and even a tsunami, but after fires, mudslides and an eye-opening earthquake, maybe a tsunami is all that’s left?

Later that day, I went for a run over to Yellow Banks on the southeast tip of the island. I stopped, like I always do, at the historic satellite ranch house that was constructed in 1889, and I noticed seismic damage to the face of the building. Over two of the doors facing out toward the dry creek-bed, lots of plaster had come down and some minor fracturing was visible above. However, everything else was status quo. A mating pair of endemic island scrub jays crossed beaks in a dead fruit tree leftover from the ranching era. A pair of island foxes sunned themselves on the bank of the dry creek-bed and barely paid any attention to me as I continued

on toward the overlook at Yellow Banks.

Rock fall is always on my mind when paddling around Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands. I’ve only been struck once by a golf ball-sized rock on the shoulder.

Dislodged by a pelagic cormorant, the rock hit the padded strap on my personal flotation device. Those isles easily have the most caves, and I have my guard up everytime I paddle into one, or lead a group inside the honeycombed cliffs.

There’s no telling when Mother Nature decides to let loose. It’s a natural adjustment that can occur without warning.

Joe Escareno traveled to the Philippines in March to visit his friend Liz Llave in Angeles City. He stayed three weeks, and reported feeling pretty wiped out from the 15-hour flight to get there. The former home of the U.S. airfield at Clark AFB, Angeles City has experienced its share of economic hardships since the base closed in the early 1990s. Mt. Pinatubo erupted in June 1991, and typhoons brought pyroclastic flows when heavy rains combined with thick layers of ash that devastated huge swaths of territory, not unlike the debris flows in Montecito on Jan. 9. Escareno reported a rather slap-dash feeling to the city (“There’s a lot of bars, nothing but bars…”) with dangling wires and heavily re-used materials making the buildings seem unstable. He said he would return to the Philippines (as did General MacArthur in WWII), but Escareno said he would travel more widely in the country next time.
