Palate to Palette fundraiser set for May 1

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center’s annual Palate to Palette will take place Sunday, May 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., offering food and wines from local venues, an online and live auction, and other in-person entertainment.

SBA adds new routes starting this summer

The Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) has announced two new nonstop routes starting this summer. United Airlines will bring back their seasonal service to Chicago-O’Hare (ORD) starting June 3. This service will be SBA’s first red-eye flight, departing at 11:45 p.m. every night except Saturday. Southwest will add a new service to Sacramento (SMF) starting June 5, departing daily at 10 a.m. Both destinations are now available to book for summer trips.

In addition, several of the currently available routes will have an increase in capacity this summer, resulting in more options for passengers departing out of SBA. American Airlines will increase capacity on services to Dallas (DFW) and Phoenix (PHX). United Airlines will increase capacity on services to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).

Nearly 200 quarts of borscht were sold last week at Carpinteria café, The Food Liaison, raising $5,000 for Ra om, a nonprofit that serves Ukrainian people in need due to the current war with Russia.

All 188 quarts of borscht were prepared by Nadia Lyhitchenko, who made her grandmother’s Ukrainian borscht fresh each day. Word spread uickly of the sweet and tangy soup, with people arriving from the outer reaches of the community, from Lompoc to LA, to purchase a uart and support the Ukraine.

“The community really rallied behind the support by taking home a quart of Ukrainian culture,” said Beatri Montalvo of The Food Liaison. Stories by CV helped spread the word, noted Montalvo, along with a broadcast piece by John Palminteri of E T that aired several times on the nightly and morning news last week.

Moreover, the fundraiser gave two community leaders, Rodrigue and Lyhitchenko, the opportunity to work together on a shared goal. “A special bond that didn’t exist prior took shape,” said Montalvo. “Both women showed true strength by coming together so uickly to help support Ukraine and this experience in turn created a lasting friendship.”

Completion of Via Real drainage system pushed to end of April

The work on the Via Real and Highway 101 drainage system – which was damaged in February by arson – will now be completed by the end of April, depending on the weather.

The project anticipates a reopening date of April 22 to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. Previously, completion was scheduled for April 8.

Road, on- and off-ramps closures continue in the construction area.

On the northbound side, one lane between Bailard Avenue and Sheffield Drive, as well as the on- and off-ramps at Bailard Avenue, Casitas Pass Road, Linden Avenue, Santa Monica Road and North Padaro Lane are closed Sunday nights between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Those same areas are closed 8 p.m. – 7 a.m., Monday through Thursdays.

On the southbound side, one lane between Sheffield Drive and Bailard Avenue is closed Sunday nights between 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.

The areas between Sheffield Drive to Bailard Avenue, as well as the on- and off-ramps at orth Padaro Lane, South Padaro Lane, Santa Claus Lane, Carpinteria Avenue, Reynolds Avenue, Linden Avenue, Casitas Pass Road and Bailard Avenue, are closed Monday through Thursday nights, 8 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

“An unforgivable betrayal”: Carpinterians stand firm against proposed bluffs development

Angry community members at a Wednesday night special city meeting were unyielding in their opinions on big development in the area: the 99-room hotel and hospitality experience, proposed for development on the bluffs, is not welcome in Carpinteria.

The meeting, held jointly between the Carpinteria City Council, the Architectural Review Board and the Planning Commission, gave the applicant for the pro ect Carp Bluff, LLC a chance to present the idea to the public prior to the formal review process.

Advertised as a hospitality experience, the 27.52-acre project is composed of two lodges with 59 rooms, 34 bungalows, six cabins, a 7-acre farm, a 16-unit apartment building for workforce housing, a restaurant, an event space and more at 5669 and 5885 Carpinteria Ave., part of the Carpinteria bluffs.

The developers included in their proposal an option to expand the workforce housing to 32 and 48 units, City Associate Planner Syndi Souter told the public on Wednesday. Parking will be available for public visitors, for the apartments and for hotel visitors.

The parcels are split by the railroad tracks. On the parcel closest to the ocean, developers want to realign the coastal vista trail, setting it back further from the bluff’s edge.

Additionally, they want to establish a 20-foot-wide, public multi-use trail, tied to the existing trails near the Carpinteria Bluffs ature Preserve. They also propose constructing a second harbor seal outlook.

Although many locals and visitors have frequently used the proposed development location as a pathway to reach the seal rookery, it is privately owned, and was sold to private developer Matthew Goodwin and a few partners late last year.

Currently, the Tee Time golf range is on part of the property.

Principal planner for the pro ect Laurel Fisher Pere said Goodwin is firm on keeping 60% of the area as open space.

She spoke to the property’s “uni ue” aspects and said a priority of the developers is to expand the public trail system in the area. “(This pro ect) reflects important community values, and objectives for this property,” she said. “Matthew holds a genuine and determined respect for the land and embraces the responsibility that comes with stewardship of this special property.”

emphasized his interest in keeping the area nature-focused and as an open space.

“I know that this can be very uickly likened to other properties that have happened within the county, such as the (Rit -Carlton) Bacara, such as the Miramar, and those are – not to be brash – but pretty much the opposite of what we would be trying to intend for this property. (They are) the antithesis to hospitality and the way we look at any kind of property creation,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin told the council he has already met with the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs, Seal Watch, Carpinteria Valley Association, South Coast Chamber of Commerce, several local businesses and other individual community members over the past two years to discuss how the project can be compatible with Carpinteria.

attempt to develop the bluffs, but as in past years, Carpinterians stood firm Wednesday, showing up strong with its smalltown, anti-big development stance: the bluffs should not cannot be developed.

Rarely a good word for the project was seen among more than an hour of public comment; Mayor Wade omura asked members of the public not at the microphone several times to keep the cheering and noise down.

“There are no buildings you need to put in there to enhance it. It’s already enhanced,” Ted Rhodes, speaking on behalf of the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs, said.

“The Citi ens for the Carpinteria Bluffs, our mission is still to save all the bluffs as open space. That is our mission.

We are opposed to this pro ect.”

Rhodes asked members of the public to raise their hands if they believed the city should reject the proposal; the majority of the room met his response with cheering and hand waving.

Public commenter Brenda Guzman, holding up a sign that said, “ ou’re on native land,” challenged the proposed development, arguing that it should remain as is: not for profit.

“Tonight, not once not once did (the developers) mention we’re on native land, that you’re developing on native land,” Gu man said. “30 months (devel-

opers) been at this try 30,000 years, 3,000 years, 300 years, our (Chumash) ancestors have occupied this land, and now you want to develop it for profit.”

Other commenters – including a few who spoke with their children at their side – echoed similar anti-development comments, asking the city to preserve the area for future generations.

Commenter athan Pratt called Carpinteria “a special place” and spoke against the development.

“As other speakers have brought up, you have a unique natural resource here.

It’s the reason people want to live in Carpinteria,” Pratt said. “Having traveled the globe, I can tell you this town, Carpinteria, is the absolute best beach town in the world to live… Once you let it go, once it gets built (on), it’s gone. It’s gone forever.”

“This (pro ect) would be an unforgivable betrayal,” commenter Bob Franco said, urging the city to acquire the property. “Our planet is dying.”

The sole public supporter of the project at the Wednesday meeting, Drew Taylor, said he believes in the passion of the Carpinteria community, and that Goodwin “holds true to his heart” that same passion for nature.

While members of the city council, planning commission and architectural review board were more muted in their comments – complimenting some designs of the project – many agreed with concerns over compatibility and how the development fits in with the city’s general plan. Of the three bodies, the hospitality pro ect will first appear before the architectural review board at a future meeting.

“I would suggest that you spend a lot of time asking our community what they want, and what they don’t want,” Councilmember Roy Lee told Goodwin.

The city has dedicated a “hot topics” website to the project which can be found at carpinteriaca.gov.

Obituary

Rosana Ortiz 4/2/1965 - 3/19/2022

Rosana Ortiz was born on April 2, 1965, in Santa Barbara, California. She was the youngest child of Juventino and Maria De La Luz Ortiz. Rosana attended Our Lady of Guadalupe and Notre Dame elementary schools and graduated from Bishop Garcia Diego High School in 1983.

After high school she briefly attended Santa Barbara City College; however, school at that time was not her vibe so she continued her employment with Vons.

In her early 20s, she was involved with Santa Barbara Search and Crusade Communities, which hosted Christian retreats at Saint Mary’s Seminary in the foothills of Santa Barbara. Here she continued her faith in our Lord, helped spread His good news and developed a lifelong circle of amazing friends.

At age 27, she returned to Santa Barbara City College with hopes of completing her degree in Criminal Justice. In December 1992, she earned an Associate of Arts degree from Santa Barbara City College.

In January of 1995, she graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a degree in Criminal Justice, with an emphasis in Corrections. She moved back to Santa Barbara after graduating.

In May 1995, she was hired as a Deputy Probation Officer for the County of San Luis Obispo. She made her home in the county, where again she developed a fantastic group of friends. She was also married for 10 years. For the next 25 years, she worked as a Deputy Probation Officer. She rose through the ranks and in August 2015, Rosana was promoted

as the first female Chief Deputy Probation Officer in San Luis Obispo County.

She retired in July of 2020 with hopes of traveling the world.

Rosana was no stranger to cancer.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 24 and enjoyed many years in remission. In July 2016, she was diagnosed with liposarcoma of her right thigh, and in August of 2016, she was diagnosed with Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. At this time, doctors also discovered she had Li-Fraumeni Syndrome which made her predisposed to develop several forms of cancers. In November 2021, she was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma.

Rosana thoroughly enjoyed her life with family and her many friends. The outdoor activities she loved included bike riding, hiking, playing softball and dragon boat paddling with the Central Coast SurviveOars for the past 14 years.

She participated in century bike rides, dragon boat races and half marathons.

Rosana’s boundless energy and love of people opened her up for numerous part-time jobs after retirement, including working at BevMo and as a ranger on Catalina Island, last summer.

Wherever she was, she could often be found with her friends sipping on an ice cold IPA. She was a badass in every sense!

She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law and friend. Rosana leaves behind many friends both in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.

She is predeceased by her parents and her nephew Benjamin Aguirre. Rosana is survived by her siblings Juventino Ortiz (Virginia) and Juanita, as well, nephews Phillip (Michaela) and Jonathan, nieces Xochitl (Ivan), Xenia, and Olivia. She also leaves behind uncles and an aunt as well as many cousins and countless friends.

A mass will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Carpinteria, California. Internment for immediate family will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. at Manning Park in Montecito. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Rosana to the Land Conservancy (lcslo.org) or the Central Coast Dragon Boat Association (ccdba.org).

New project would harm community

On March 30, a joint meeting of the City Council, Planning Commission and Architectural Review Board was held in order to introduce a development proposal. The project is called Carpinteria Farm & Hospitality Experience.

The developer, Matt Goodwin, made an informative presentation, describing the hotel, residences, event facility, restaurant/bar, pool, spa, farm and other details of the project. Mr. Goodwin put hard work, creativity and interesting planning ideas into this proposed project. He comes across as honestly believing in this development and believing it would be good for Carpinteria. Unfortunately, he is misguided. It is an upscale resort that does not reflect the character, lifestyle or values of the Carpinteria community. He describes himself as a nature lover, surfer and supporter of Carpinteria.

This proposal does not reflect those values. This project would put the harbor seal rookery in danger. It would put multiple buildings between the Bluffs ature Preserve and Viola Fields. It would threaten wildlife and birds. It would use a great deal of water. It would take away our precious open space. Our City Council should think long and hard about the ramifications of this proposed development. Do they want to be remembered as proponents of open space for generations to come or supporters of unlimited commercial development?

For years there have been large white letters written in paint on the rock face in the hills to the north of Carpinteria, just west of the Franklin Trail. The graffiti is an eyesore and is visible from almost anywhere in town. It’s hard to believe that in an area of so many nature-lovers, nothing has been done about it. I have sent polite emails to the City Council, mayor and sheriff, without any reply.

Unless I’m missing something about this – maybe it’s private land? – it seems like something that should have been taken care of long ago.

Our ocean and lands have been badly damaged by extreme weather events, firestorms and oil spills, and are relentlessly exploited by the fossil fuel industry and our thirst for fossil fuels.

We need to protect Carpinteria from over-development and we need the city council/planning commission to act as environmental stewards who work with community members as allies and partners. We need to transition into circular,

sustainable and renewable economies with corresponding building plans.

If the city needs help with this, may I suggest we work with the Santa Barbara Climate Reality Leadership team and their environmental partners to help our local government officials to better plan for a healthy planet, healthy people future? In the meantime, if others object to the city’s future planning strategy, please comment on the city’s website before April 11, the next city council meeting.

Time to pony up

Oh, the bluffs. Everyone wants to save the bluffs. The people came in droves to announce their displeasure with any thought of any bluffs development. I agree, I understand completely. Here’s the rub: it is privately owned property.

We don’t own it, we the citizens.

Many people came together in the past to purchase these “saved” glorious properties which define Carpinteria. Two very vocal women from the Chumash tribe spoke at the hearing last Wednesday. It gave me an idea. Why not approach the “casino” Chumash elders and ask for money to buy the property? That would be an excellent opportunity to honor the ative American tradition and beliefs.

And it would save what we were told are sacred grounds. It can’t hurt to ask.

All the young people who appeared and wrote opposing any and all development on this private property can also step up, organize or donate in any way possible. Think about it. You certainly have my support.

Santa Barbara’s homelessness rate is now 822, down slightly from 2021 numbers (914). In Carpinteria, homeless residents that have been counted reach 21 this year, down from 39 in 2021, and consistent with the 2020 reporting of 21 individuals.

An additional 25 cases of homelessness in vehicles in Carpinteria was reported in 2020 (no data is available for 2022). Poverty in Carpinteria is currently reported at 7.5%. In Santa Barbara, the rate is 12.5%.

The launch of student-run The Howard Herald

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N When Howard School students Anna Petersen and Daisy Gemberling – now a student at Cate School – decided to start a school paper last year, they did it all on their own.

Of course, they had the support of faculty and parents, but the two girls didn’t have a team of journalists or editors. They collected articles and drawings from their classmates and launched the Howard Herald, the school’s official student-run e-newspaper.

After Gemberling graduated from Howard last year, Petersen, now in the eighth grade, took on the role of editor-in-chief and now runs the paper by herself.

“I thought the paper was a great idea since it’s such a small school,” Petersen said. “The paper is my way to allow people to get to know each other and discover each other’s interests.”

Howard School admits students from preschool through eighth grade and all ages are invited to contribute to the Herald. Even the younger kids write articles, though they tend to be on the shorter side, Petersen said. Students who feel the need to express themselves creatively will also send in drawings, photographs or comics.

expect a preschooler to come up with a full essay with no grammatical errors, so we started accepting drawings.”

Due to the school’s small size, Petersen can publish everything she receives.

During the school’s daily morning assembly, she announces when the Herald is coming out with a new issue and asks for submissions. Students are encouraged to write about any topic they find interesting in any genre at all. Some of her classmates contribute to every issue.

“We’ve covered a variety of topics including animals, the Grammys, comics, drawings and cuisine,” Petersen noted.

“We get a wide range of people who contribute to the paper.”

Before working for the Herald, Petersen didn’t have much prior experience with journalism. Through writing and editing for the school paper, she said she has grown as a writer and is finding her niche.

“I like writing because it’s very differ-

ent from speaking,” Petersen noted. “I get time to think about how I want to word my sentences. Writing also helps me learn new things about the topics I write on and to do better in my schoolwork.”

Petersen has been writing on a wide variety of topics, but one she said she particularly finds it fun to write about is food.

“I find that my interests really lie in food because I love eating and also because food has a really rich history that people don’t really think about when they’re eating it,” Petersen said. “Before I wrote about these topics, I never knew that licorice came from a plant or that sushi had such a rich history behind it. It also helps with appreciating food when you’re eating it.”

Petersend said she and Gemberling started the paper as a platform to help students get to know each other through shared interests. As it turns out, it has also been an opportunity for parents to learn about the topics their kids are interested in.

I think when people get to know each other, it deepens their relationships and pulls them together. Sometimes I see people group up and write something together. I’ve seen co-authored articles.”

Through starting a paper that caters to all interests and accepts submissions from all students, Petersen has become more familiar with her classmates and feels a stronger sense of community.

“Usually, kids tend to have friends in their own classes, but it’s more fun to have friends from people of all classes,” Petersen said. “Now I know more people in the school that I typically wouldn’t know without the paper. I know almost all the names of the first through fourth graders or they’ll say ‘hi’ to me when normally we would just walk by each other. I hope everyone else has had similar experiences with getting to know each other.”

The Howard School will hold its annual fundraising event this Saturday, April 9. This year’s auction is online and open to all community members to participate.

“What a way to go out”: Fire battalion chief retires after 10 years of service

The day Battalion Chief Michael Gallagher was set to retire, he got a call at 5 a.m.: a big-rig truck had caught on fire on the Highway 101. The accident would soon cause traffic delays and lane closures for several hours, but the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, and other nearby agencies, were on it.

“We ran a really rough wreck on the 101 (the day before), and the very next morning I was supposed to be retiring,” Gallagher told CVN. “But at 5 a.m. we got called out for a big-rig fire. I was supposed to retire at 10 a.m., but I was still out on the scene (after that).”

“What a way to go out.”

Gallagher worked with the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District for over 10 years; he got his start working with the forest service for a few years before working as a volunteer in Tahoe, “getting a few years under my belt” for the experience.

“I knew I wanted to make this my job,” he emphasized. “Wherever I found housing, that was where I was going to work (as a firefighter).”

Gallagher graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1988. After graduation he moved away, but he knew that “his dream was to come back” to the area and now, he gets to enjoy his retirement here. “I’ve always had my sights set on it,” he said.

“I was actually testing in departments as a firefighter in this area, but this opportunity (with Carp-Summerland) came up, and I tested as a battalion chief. It’s not often heard of that you go from a captain

“It was an absolute honor to work with the men and women of Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department and the adjoining agencies. I really feel like in my entire career, those guys and ladies were the best of the best,” he added.

For his successor, Noah Tunney, Gallagher offers this: “don’t take yourself too seriously.”

“We have the best job in the world, and enjoy it,” he said, adding that Tunney has a strong commitment to community service.

In his time at the department, Gallagher said he has been living his life “two to four days out.” He’s unsure of what comes next, but he knows this: it will be spent with his two pit bulls, Annabella and Rudy.

LoMonaco promoted to re marshal

Gallagher said that while his learning curve “was pretty steep,” he got a hold of the job, and feels honored to have served the Carpinteria-Summerland areas for the past decade. He noted he has seen an embrace and support from the community – during the Thomas Fire and debris flows in particular and feels humbled to have worked as a firefighter for the last 35+ years.

Michael LoMonaco was promoted to fire marshal at the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District recently, after joining the district in April 2018.

LoMonaco first got his start with the district as a fire inspector, after working with several departments in the area, including the Painted Cave Fire Department, the Santa Paula City Fire Department and the Ventura County Fire District. He has volunteer experience with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s search and rescue team, as well as with the county’s equine evaluation team.

LoMonaco holds a fire technology certification from Allan Hancock College and a bachelor’s in law and society from UC Santa Barbara.

Fire districts collect gear for Ukraine re ghters

Local firefighters have also launched a gear and supplies collection drive for Ukrainian firefighters, the Montecito Fire Protection District announced Tuesday.

Members of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, Montecito Fire Department and Carpinteria-Summerland Firefighter Protection District will travel to San Diego to pick up supplies from fire departments along their route, before they return to Santa Barbara with the donation supplies. All supplies will be delivered to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department’s Training Tower, at 30 S. Olive St.

Surely the speed limit for trucks could be reduced to 50 mph within construction areas. Surely the Via Real strip entering the roundabout could be patrolled.

Traffic rarely slows even when using a right-hand turn signal to turn into Hales Lane or my driveway. I have seen so many almost head-on collisions occur when impatient drivers try to pass on the left even when I use my emergency blinkers.

What a great turnout by our community of those opposed to “The Farm Experience.” The Farm is a resort planned for the site currently occupied by Tee-Time Driving Range. The developer Matthew Goodwin presented his project very well.

It does have many amenities that appeal to many of us, including some supposedly affordable housing for workers, public access, an actual farm and much more.

There were many speakers who spoke eloquently and passionately in opposition of the pro ect, including: Ted Rhodes of Save the Bluffs, Mike Wondoloski of the CVA, businessmen, moms with their children and people from the Chumash Nation.

Coastal View News • Carpinteria, California Our community was well represented by the diversity of its citi ens in its opposition to this assault on our bluffs. Even E T reporter Tracy Lehr stated to me that they picked the wrong town for their project.

The crowd was loud and lively, but was tempered by the mayor for being too energetic by threatening to cut speaker time.

This is one of my biggest gripes about city council meetings. There is a timer right in front of you to remind you to move along because you only have 3 minutes or less to state your concern and a blinking red light reminds you of that. ou find yourself in a race against the clock. We elected our councilmen to hear our concerns and when you put restrictions on us with timers, interruptions and other distractions, it is demeaning, embarrassing and totally unnecessary. It’s no small wonder that most people are reluctant to express themselves at public meetings.

A good mayor can conduct a meeting without the help of electronic gadgets. Our community would be best served if we got rid of the timer and let the people speak.

Howard students give song and poetry recital for family members

Grade school classes at the Howard School take turns reciting poetry or songs for family members at the daily assembly. Last week, the PreK class did the jig while singing spiritedly, and first graders recited poetry by heart. The tradition of memori ing poems and songs, and performing them for peers, is part of the Carden teaching method used by Howard School educators since 1912.

The students each painted landscapes as a fundraiser for the school, which is raising money for a two-classroom STEAM and Art building. The students’ art is for sale, and the second-grade students chose Red ettle Coffee as the place to showcase their artwork.

Nearly 12,000 items have been re-barcoded at the Carpinteria Library in the past 12 days, due to the work of 150 volunteers, many of whom came back many times. The Friends of the Carpinteria Library provided coffee and cookies and volunteers brought treats as well.

“There were sisters, couples, mother/daughters, grandmother/granddaughters, friends, former librarians, and so many individuals who just wanted to contribute,” said Jody Thomas, city librarian.

The Carpinteria Community Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to migrate to the new library system without fines and fees carried over.

“If previous library fines have prevented library use or an unreturned book has you avoiding the library, fine and fee amnesty will provide a fresh start. The city of Carpinteria wants to make sure the library is accessible for everyone,” Thomas added.

Current Santa Barbara Public Library card holders can also make a small change to their existing SBPL library card which will allow the continued borrowing of Santa Barbara Public Library materials.

Visit or call the library before April 13 to maintain SBPL privileges After that date, all existing SBPL library accounts with Carpinteria as the home library will no longer be active. “Whether you keep your SBPL card or not, you will want to get a new Carpinteria Community Library card, which are available now,” Thomas said.

The main rooms of the Carpinteria Library will be closing temporarily on April 22, for deferred maintenance work. Some library materials will be available in the multi-purpose room while the work is being conducted, including holds pickups. The work is expected to take several weeks, but Thomas said it will make a big difference in the long-term health of the building and usability of the library.

Carpinteria resident Meganne Forbes has written a new book, “365 Days of Inspired Pickleball.” The sports tome is a guide to becoming a better player. Forbes also noted that she hopes the book will inspire compassionate players on and off the court. Each daily entry includes pickleball tips from experts and inspirational quotes. “The book tries to encompass all the amazing aspects of this game we love so much,” Forbes said.

Copies of Forbes’ two books, “365 Days of Inspired Pickleball” and “100 Benefits from Playing Pickleball,” are now available for checkout at the library.

When not playing pickleball or writing about pickleball, Forbes enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and making art.

The Santa Barbara Public Library is in the sixth month of its Outreach Van program, visiting neighborhoods in the area to provide homeless individuals with access to Wifi and other technologies.

Organized by Showers of Blessings, Doctors Without Walls, the county’s Behavioral Wellness Program and other agencies, the van sets up at local Neighborhood Navigation Centers. The newest located is in the Eastside neighborhood, at 535 East Yanonali St., from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Vans are e uipped with Wifi, computers, a printer and charging stations. Books and materials, such as Chromebooks and internet hotspots, are available to borrow.

“Providing services to people experiencing homelessness is all about building relationships over time, treating them with dignity, and meeting them where they’re at while offering what they need. While responding to another call, a deputy observed a vehicle speeding and making unsafe lane changes as it drove near the Santa Monica on- and off-ramp and continued onto the right shoulder.

The deputy stopped the car and the driver stated he was going back to Santa Barbara.

The driver said he did not know who the car belonged to, and said he took the car from a local hotel after receiving permission from a truck driver. Deputies confirmed the car had been stolen recently from the Hilton parking lot, and that the owner did not give him permission.

The driver was arrested and booked.

A vehicle was stopped for having faulty lights, and the driver was unlicensed. The driver consented to asearch and a vape pen of concentrated cannabis was located. He said he used the pen which was 92% THC. He had 140 BPM pulse and performed poorly on sobriety field tests. He was arrested and transported to Station 39 for a DRE exam. A presumptive urine test was positive for cannabis. An evidentiary urine sample was then performed, and Espinoza was cited and released to a family member.

Delayed onset muscle soreness: at it is isn t and at to do about it

WELLNESS WARRIOR LEAH HARDING Recently, I ran into a friend while I was walking. I told her I was walking because I was too sore to do anything harder for my workout. She made a oke about flushing out the lactic acid. I jumped into nerdy health professional mode and corrected her, even though I’m pretty sure she didn’t really care.

Lactic acid is a common misnomer for soreness and often confused with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Lactic acid is the result of cells producing energy without oxygen (gut bacteria and yogurt are produced in a similar way). In general, lactic acid will flood your muscles while working out, but it dissipates after mere seconds before turning into lactate and hydrogen ions. Lucky for us, lactate is actually upcycled by our body and used for energy.

That’s it though. It doesn’t hang around long.

DOMS on the other hand can make you sore up to a week after a killer workout and it’s usually caused by one to two things: movements you are unaccustomed to in conjunction with

Nutrition coach and personal trainer, Leah Harding, says that soreness a day or two after a challenging workout is usually caused by delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and has nothing to do with lactic acid, as commonly thought. sufficient intensity, or eccentric (muscle lengthening) exercises, like the downward motion of a squat, going downhill while running or the controlled lowering in a pull-up or bicep curl.

When you haven’t worked out for a while, the soreness is worse than when you’re conditioned. If you’ve ever taken a few weeks off for sickness or vacation, you probably know how quickly deconditioning can occur.

DOMS is hard for researchers to understand, but it goes something like this: • Muscles are damaged (in a good way) while working out by way of microscopic muscle tears • White blood cells get attracted to these

muscle sites • White blood cells release chemicals to help clean up the injured cells and tissue • A second wave of white blood cells come in to help and penetrate the damaged tissue The second wave of white blood cells produce a substance called prostaglandin E which organi es the inflammatory/healing process and is a pain inducer.

It might be a little fuzzy still and tempting to just blame lactic acid, but using the DOMS acronym will at least make you sound like you know about what’s going on in your body.

Once DOMS kicks in, you can take

and NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve the discomfort. These have been shown to help, but it’s dependent on dosage and timing, which varies person to person.

Stretching has not been shown to help but massage may, though not always.

Light exercise has been proven to be the best pain reducer, though the effects are temporary, meaning the pain may return after you’re done working out.

Your best bet with DOMS is to take it easy and do active recovery that does not target the muscles that are sore so that they can recover. Resting completely is also an option, but because we know getting the blood flowing lessens the pain, even temporarily, keeping your body moving might help your mindset as well.

The last piece of the DOMS puzzle: how do you prevent it next time?

Workouts that are heavy on eccentric moves will be the biggest culprits, as will doing workouts that you’re not accustomed to. The best way to hedge your bets is to slowly increase volume throughout your training so that you’re acclimated to the intensity of soreness-inducing workouts. Staying mindful of what eccentric movements are will also help so that you can prepare for the soreness and play with a mixture of massage, NSAIDs and active recovery to keep you feeling your best.

Rincon moment: Dora, Peck and Aaberg, 1966

Let’s pause a moment to study an iconic photograph from 1966 of John Peck, Miki Dora and Denny Aaberg striding into the Rincon surf. All three are surfing legends, with the scheming and charismatic Dora still perhaps the most influential surfer of all time.

Miklos “Da Cat” Dora III (1934-2002) always dominated the scene. And so it is here as the great Dora, mid-conversation, prepares to enter the Rivermouth’s icy December waters.

Although Dora’s home base was Malibu, he was often spotted at Rincon Point, and it was in nearby Montecito that he passed away 20 years ago, dying of pancreatic cancer at his father’s home.

Dora’s life and personality are complex enough to warrant book-length studies (two so far). Suffice it to say that the man was complicated, talented and not necessarily someone to share your credit card number with.

During the late 1950s and ‘60s, surfing’s Golden Age, Dora was synonymous with Malibu. And Malibu had everything: publicity, glamour, Gidget and legendary locals like Tubesteak, who surfed daily and brawled and caroused nightly.

The Hollywood elite at the nearby Colony (and their parties) attracted the surf crowd. And Malibu’s surf scene in turn attracted Hollywood. It was a match made in popular culture heaven. And when Hollywood began making surf films, the marriage was consummated.

Never mind that “real” surfers like Dora claimed to scorn the popularization of his sport by Gidget and her gremmie army of beach-crazed neophytes from the Valley.

At the time of our photograph, Dora stood at the height of his powers, the reigning “King of Malibu,” appearing in surfing contests (often not faring as well as he thought he should), in surf flicks, in surf magazines, and frequently on the party circuit. His adoring fans treated his occasional sermon-on-the-mount style declarations like holy writ to be deconstructed and worried over like Beatles lyrics or a communique from Che Guevara.

In a 1 67 Surfer article, for example, Dora claimed that Malibu had been ruined by an influx of kooks.

But it all came crashing down. When friends couldn’t finance his et-setting surf and ski trips, Dora passed some bad checks and credit cards. One transgression brought the outlaw down worse than a wipeout at Pipeline. Charged with fraud, Dora went on the run, leaving the country in 1975 and only returning in 1 81 after spending time in a French ail.

He was tried, convicted and spent 1 82 in American prisons, allegedly crossing paths with Charlie Manson who remembered a party the two had attended in the good old days.

After ail, Dora continued to travel and surf. To the end, he was the outlaw, never working and never compromising. And never missing a chance for uncrowded waves. Whatever his faults, Dora lived and breathed the life.

Back to Rincon. As mentioned, Dora was no stranger. A few years after the photo, Da Cat played his part in the “Swell of the Century” at the Point in December 1969. Although by no means the standout the day that Rincon’s hidden reef erupted, Dora oined Renny ater, Mike Davis, George Greenough, Jeff Boyd and evin Sears, among others.

As to the other surf royalty in the photograph: John Peck (b. 1 44) is a renowned character himself who made his bones as a young phenom at Pipeline in the early 1 60s. He soon had his own signature board, the Peck Penetrator, manufactured by Morey Pope on Front Street in Ventura.

In an ad for the board, Peck famously appeared in tweed as a British mod. Fast forward 60 years: the internet has recent footage of Peck still surfing (appropriately at Swami’s in orth County San Diego) and extoling the virtues of stretching and meditation.

Musician and writer Denny Aaberg (b. 1 47) co-wrote the cult surf film “Big Wednesday” (1 78) and is a surfing legend in his own right. Last year he released with John Milius the missing “Big Wednesday” novel (based on Malibu’s glory days) along with essays on surf history: “Big Wednesday: Deluxe Anniversary Edition.” When contacted this week about the photo, Denny remembers that low-tide afternoon this way: “I was attending Santa Barbara City College and drove down to the cove in my 58 VW bus after classes, because the surf was up. It was before the freeway was completed and surfers still parked along the old highway, where the bike path is now. That day stands out because I got to walk out into the water, three abreast, with my surfing heroes, Miki Dora and John Peck. I’m from Malibu, and Miki is one of the first surfers I watched riding a wave there in 1 56. He was definitely ‘The King of Malibu.’ I’m grateful I got to witness him from the water all those years, finessing through fast sections with his famous side-slipping Miki Mambo maneuver.

“John Peck had been living in Hawaii, ripping Ban ai Pipeline. He came to stay in the Santa Barbara area for a couple of years during the mid-sixties. With his beautiful cutbacks and fast trimming, it was fantastic to watch him ride at places like Rincon and Hammond’s Reef. In the photo, the three of us are wearing Short John wetsuits, which was common in those days. Full wetsuits didn’t become available until later. Peck is carrying his

Dora is in the middle with a ater surfboard. Within a couple of years, the shortboard rage took over surfing and those longboards were obsolete.”

A little more on Dora’s board from designer and historian Paul Gross: “it was either the original ater Spoon or one of the first few. It was reportedly feet 2 inches which was very short at the time… The deck had been pigmented white to cover all the ding repairs from heavy use. This board is thought to be the inspiration for Greg Noll’s subsequent ‘Da Cat’ model.”

When we caught up with Gross last year, he added that it was possible that, even though oll’s “Da Cat” model was specifically created as Dora’s signature board (he received royalties for each one sold), Dora (typically) decided that he preferred the ater Spoon. And why not, the ater Spoon is the most legendary board in surfdom.

Before we leave 1 66 Rincon, a few words on the photographer who snapped the shot. Ron Stoner (1 44-1 4?) was as mercurial as Dora but even less able to cope with the world as it is. Still, for a time, from 1 65 to 1 68, Stoner’s photographs didn’t ust document surfing’s golden age; they played a ma or role in creating the era.

His rich, glossy, even lush, pictures of sun-drenched surf filled with young, gorgeous bodies in colorful swimsuits are almost heart-breaking in their beauty and

evanescence.

So what happened? Surf historian and Stoner biographer Matt Warshaw puts the downfall this way: Stoner “is surfing’s Brian Wilson, a beautiful, tragic supernova, except with Ron there was no second act, no comeback, no victory lap. Drugs and schizophrenia took his career, his health, and eventually his life.

Stoner was all but done shooting photos by age 24, after being diagnosed with schi ophrenia, and went missing at 33.

He was never seen again.”

In 1 4, Stoner was declared legally dead. But in December 1 66, the photographer’s mental health crises and Dora’s exile and imprisonment lay in the future.

As were the crowds, commerciali ation and everything else Dora hated. So, let’s en oy this great photograph and what we have today.

Carpinteria’s boys tennis team, led by coach harles Bryant has caught fire recently, winning three straight before spring Break and returning to the court strong last week with three more wins, including beating traditional tennis power santa Barbara. the streak began with back-to-back-to-

back wins over three straight days on March 14 -16 . after nearly two weeks off, the team returned to action on March 29 against a much-improved Malibu sharks team. “this was a tough day for us on many fronts as we just came back from spring Break,” Bryant said. “and not

having a ‘ get the rust off’ practice yesterday due to the rain.”

Despite the break, the missed practice and blustery wind conditions, the team was able to hold on for a 10-8 victory.

“W e knew we were going to be a bit off but the boys just kept at it and kept trying to do the right things even if it did not work out as often as they’d like,” Bryant said. singles standout Max stone went 3-0, while his brother austin was also undefeated in singles at 2– 0. “austin was dominant again,” Bryant said. “He just seems so in control of not just the set or game but each point.” two days later, Carpinteria hosted a tough 11-1 nordhoff sq uad, hoping to avenge a loss from three weeks earlier. “W e had a renewed focus and an adjusted lineup to counter nordhoff’s strong singles and doubles players and in the end, it paid off,” Bryant said. the match ended in a 9- 9 tie, and had to be decided by games won. Carpinteria took the victory, 69- 63. once again, Max stone pulled a very important 3-0 sweep, while his brother austin partnered with Ben persoon for a 3-0 doubles sweep. “as good as austin is in singles, he is just as strong in doubles,” Bryant said.

The arriors finished their week of play with an april fool’s Day match against local and national tennis power santa Barbara. Carpinteria made the short trip north and built on the five-game win streak by forcing yet another decision by games. Both teams finished - and Carpinteria was able to pull their second close win in two days by a margin of seven games, 76- 69. “santa Barbara has one of the most storied high school tennis programs in not just southern California but also nationally,’’ Bryant said. “it seems they reload year after year, but we were able to catch them off guard a bit today as we sq ueaked out our second 9- 9 win in two days.” the win forced the W arriors to play a physical match, he said, compared to the more “mental” match the previous day.

“W e had to grind out long points and handle the heavy spin and power of the Dons’ groundstrokes.” endow picked up a momentumchanging 6 -1 win, and fought against santa Barbara’s toughest player, setting the rest of his team in motion to take the win. “they all saw how hard Matthew was fighting and just followed his lead riding his coattail of determination.”

Carpinteria is now 10-4 overall, and 4- 1 in Citrus Coast league play.

Carpinteria baseball breaks even in two-game series

The Warriors battled Fillmore for a home-and-away series, with both teams picking up a home win. With the victory, Carpinteria now has three Citrus Coast League wins. arpinteria hit the road for the first game and were able to get on the board with a run in the first inning. illmore then exploded for unanswered over the next three innings on the way to a - win.

The arriors’ final run came in the fifth inning after rich oebel ripped a leadoff single and later scored on Matt Muñoz’ RBI single. Carpinteria’s Beto Martinez tossed three and one-third innings of scoreless relief behind the effort of starter Joaquin Ramirez.

“Tough combination for us as Fillmore is clicking along on all cylinders and we are wound pretty tight,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney.” Players might be trying to do more than they are capable of and it seems like we might have lost sight of the process.”

Two days later, Fillmore traveled up the coast to play a rematch, this time in Carpinteria. The rematch went the arriors way as arpinteria won - securing the season series with two wins over the Flashes.

Sophomore righthander Shane oodmanson went the distance for arpinteria picking up his first varsity win as he surrendered two earned runs scattered eight hits and walked just one batter against three strikeouts. oebel and Talon Trumble finished with two hits apiece while ach ata and Isaac Flores each had clutch two-out RBI hits.

“Really happy for the group as they continued to grind through the skid with an incredibly positive attitude. very player on the s uad just continues to do the right thing all the time,” Cooney said.

The Warriors play another home-and-away series this week against Santa Paula.

On the girls’ side arpinteria was able to win all five field events including three wins from standout Ainslee Alexander in the long jump, triple jump and shot put.

Ariana Lounsbury set a new personal record and won the discus even with a distance of ’ ’’. espite the wins in the field events Santa aula was able to win enough of the track competition to come away overall winners.

Warriors softball loses two more at home

arpinteria’s softball team has struggled through the season losing straight since their only win over Santa Barbara on eb. . ast week the arriors suffered two more losses against Santa aula - and illmore - . Both losses were home games. arpinteria is now - overall and - in itrus oast eague play.

The Warriors will prepare for a tournament at Valley Christian this weekend, starting with two games on Saturday against agle ock and Sylmar.

Volunteers clean up Santa Monica Creek Trail Local volunteers gathered at the Santa Monica Creek Trail on Saturday, joining Trail Steward Ray Kolbe in cleaning up the area.

Volunteers – armed with gloves, hats, pitchforks and other tools – weeded the area and layered the soil, placing cardboard down and covering it with mulch. The goal, Kolbe advertised to the community, was to help create habitats for pollinators and prevent non-native invasive species from taking over.
