Santa Barbara County Environmental Health Services issued an advisory this week after Tuesday’s rainfall warning residents about potential health risks associated with storm water runo at countywide beaches. torm water is untreated rainwater that ows through the drain system into creeks, the ocean and other waterways. Contact with storm water while swimming or surfing may increase the risk for certain types of illnesses such as rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting and diarrhea.

Unlike the municipal sewer system, water carried by a storm drain system is not treated. To minimize potential health risks, it is recommended that people do not swim, play or surf in the ocean and creeks for at least three days following a rain event.

Beachgoers should also avoid areas near the outfall from drainpipes and creeks that enter the ocean following a rain event as storm water runo may carry high levels of bacteria and pollutants. port harvesters should wait at least days after a significant rain to harvest shellfish. igh bacterial levels, pesticide, herbicide and motor oil grease ushed into the ocean with the storm runo may contaminate the shellfish beds. When raw or undercooked contaminated shellfish is eaten, serious illnesses such as gastroenteritis, septicemia, salmonellosis and hepatitis may result. de uate cooking of shellfish will destroy harmful bacteria but may not be e ective in killing viruses. In addition, cooking does not eliminate chemical and metal pollutants in shellfish.

Aquatics program coordinator Leilanie ilva is this month’s tandout ta em ber at the Carpinteria Community Pool. ilva has been with the city for over five years. She has served as lifeguard, junior lifeguard instructor, swim and water polo head coach, and now aquatics program coordinator.

“Leilanie is motivated, takes initiative and always has her team’s back,” Amber Workman, aquatics supervisor, said.

Silva grew up in Carpinteria and enjoys beach days, roller coasters and working out. Her favorite foods are cevLeilanie Silva iche, tacos and sushi.

“We are so lucky to have Leilanie as a leader. She has been instrumental in the success of aquatic programs in Carpinteria,” Workman added.

SB Parks & Rec summer camps registration opens next week

The city of Santa Barbara will open registration for its 2022 summer camps next week, after two years of modified camps due to Covid .

Registration opens on Tuesday, April 5 at 9 a.m. for junior guards, and Wednesday, pril at a.m. for general registration. Camps are o ered on full and part day basis, and counselor-in-training positions are also available. Some camps that will be o ered this summer include beach volleyball, swim and tennis, ceramics, water polo camps, trapeze camp and more. “ he department was so fortunate to be in a position to o er safe and healthy camp programs that served over 2,900 children and their families during the pandemic,” recreation manager Rich Hanna said. “We are thrilled to emerge from the pandemic and return to o ering a full suite of full and half day camp programs for our community.”

Through the Police Activities League, 154 scholarships are available.

Marine biologist Holly Lohuis to present on Channel whales

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) will present a free webinar on “Santa Barbara Channel’s Whales and Their Climate Connection,” led by Holly Lohuis, a marine biologist, marine educator and naturalist. ohuis will discuss her research on whales and their in uence on the ecology of our oceans and the Santa Barbara Channel. “Whales have the power to inspire millions of people to care about our oceans,” Lohuis said. “Let’s dive in together and learn more about our local whales.”

Lohuis has been a marine educator since 1991. For nearly a decade, she worked as a diver and naturalist with Island Packers, the Channel Islands National Park boats.

She then moved on to a more global arena, working with Passage Productions-Live ive organization on cruise ships in the Caribbean, acific and editerranean. he was also the on-site marine biologist at the eco-resort, Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort, where she shared her expertise and passion on the importance of protecting the water planet for future generations.

Water district announces WaterWise Garden contest

The Carpinteria Valley Water District has opened its 2022 WaterWise garden contest, which showcases local residents who have implemented water-wise landscapes at their homes. Carpinteria’s winner will be given their own award before competing as a finalist for a countywide grand prize.

Campground reservations are now open

Following the President’s Day holiday, reservations for the Carpinteria State Park Campgrounds were taken o ine for a month, as is done each year, for park services to conduct maintenance. During maintenance activity, the campgrounds temporarily closed some sites, such as the ones near buildings which were painted during this time. This week, the park resumed online booking for reservations to stay at the campgrounds.

The South County Board of Architectural Review has approved a completed version of the proposed Roots Carpinteria Dispensary application, located at 3823 Santa Claus Lane, the company announced this week.

The project will now move forward through the county’s Planning and Development departments. The project requires a coastal development permit, and Roots said the project should be seen before the zoning administrator in May. “We are very happy to have finally reached this milestone,” said uis Castaneda, director of retail operations for Roots Carpinteria.

“We’ve always understood this process is a marathon and not a sprint. We’ve assembled an experienced team of knowledgeable land use, government and public a airs professionals to help us navigate this process.”

Castaneda added that the dispensary plans to continue its outreach programs and hopes to add electric vehicle charging stations and solar power to its plan.

The dispensary is one of six retail storefronts currently going through the county process to obtain a license to sell cannabis.

Mayoral wins state competition for poetry

Carpinteria High School senior Sierra ayoral has been awarded first place in the California Art Council’s Poetry Ourselves contest.

The 2022 State Finals marked the 17th year of the Poetry Out Loud program for high school students, which encourages youth to learn about poetry through memorization and performance. Students representing 43 counties competed for the state titles.

Mayoral’s win is in the creative writing discipline of the competition, Poetry Ourselves. County champions are invited to submit an original written poem of no more than 50 lines, judged anonymously by a guest judge.

Earlier this year, Mayoral was recognized as the Santa Barbara County Poetry Sierra Mayoral Out Loud champion for the second year in a row.

For the state competition, Mayoral submitted the poem, “Crossed and Cautious.”

FDA approves second booster shot for 50+

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration approved a second booster shot of the fizer and oderna Covid vaccines for those older than 50.

Those older than 50 are eligible for the second booster shot at least four months after their first booster. hose older than , who are also immunocompromised, are also eligible for the second booster; this includes those have had an organ transplant or are living under equal levels of immunocompromise.

In a press release, the FDA said this decision was made due to growing evidence that a second dose of the Covid vaccine protects against Covid and “is not associated with new safety concerns.”

BY EVELYN SPENCE A divided council – split with a 3-2 vote – narrowly moved forward with Map A-2 Monday night, amid the same back-and-forth redistricting arguments that have filled previous Carpinteria City Council meetings.

With ayor Wade omura, Councilmember oy ee and Councilmember regg . Carty’s “aye” votes, and Councilmember atalia larcon and ice ayor l Clark’s “noes,” ap will move forward for second approval at the council’s next regular meeting on pril .

Prior to the vote, Mayor Nomura warned the public against issuing further “threats” to councilmembers. e said all councilmembers have seen an uptick in “accusations and disrespect” in recent weeks from public commenters and over email.

“I’m tough skin. ou can make fun of me all day long. I won’t take it personally, I won’t take o ense to it,” he added, calling some recent comments a “bullying tactic.” imilar to the council’s last meeting, onday’s meeting saw a sharp divide between those who supported Map A-2 and ap . ap keeps larcon, ee and omura in di erent districts, and Carty and Clark in the same one ap separates larcon in a di erent district, Carty and Clark in another, and ee and omura in a third. If two incumbents live in the same district, they have to run against each other.

Rincon Trail Project stopped in its tracks

City Council conditionally accepts appeals against project

Wrapping up around midnight on onday, Carpinteria city councilmembers voted , with Councilmember oy Lee dissenting, to conditionally accept appeals to stop the Rincon Trail Project going against sta recommendations.

Appeals submitted by three people – arl Cameron, elen O’ eill, and lawyer Stan Barankiewicz on behalf of the Santa Barbara Soaring Association – sought to stop the Rincon Trail Project, a 2,800-footlong trail that would stretch across the coast, from being built.

The project, which has been worked in some form or another for over a decade, has already passed through the city’s Architectural Review Board and Planning Commission, the latter of which voted for the Alternative 3 design at a January meeting. he city of Carpinteria is responsible for only feet of the foot wide trail the rest of the responsibility lies with the county and Cal rans.

On onday, appellants argued to the council that the environmental e ects of the project are mischaracterized, that the

“I see youth, I see families using this trail ,” ee said. “I don’t want my kids or anybody to walk near traffic.”

But the other councilmembers sided with the soaring community, who fiercely argued for hours that putting in the trail as proposed would destroy over 40 years of soaring progress.

Carty asked Cameron if the soaring community had permission to launch from the property currently Cameron said no.

“I understand how you get hooked on a sport, and it’s your release everybody has one, but are you saying that if lterative were to be picked, there would be no more soaring there ” Carty asked.

“It would eliminate it, probably of it,” Cameron said. he council directed sta to look at Alternatives 2 and 4, the latter of which the soaring community said would allow continued free ying in the area. he matter will come back to the council.

Solving another type of pollution CVN

THE LAY OF THE LAND MIKE WONDOLOWSKI What is one of the most pervasive types of pollution, yet is one of only a couple types that is completely gone from the environment the moment we stop adding more pollution Polluted water stays polluted well past the time the contamination enters it. The same is true for air. Contaminated soil can stay that way for years on end, and various types of litter and other debris can outlive anyone reading this column.

So, what type of pollution disappears immediately after we eliminate the source One evening a few years ago the power went out. After stumbling around a bit to find a ashlight, I stepped outside to see if it was just my house or if the whole neighborhood was dark. It turned out everyone’s lights were out, as well as the streetlights. As I turned back to go inside, something above me caught my eye. I looked up and saw a long cloud overhead stretching across the sky.

But something was strange about it…

Wait! That wasn’t a cloud. It was the Milky Way! Yes, a “cloud,” but made of 400 billion stars.

It was so eye-catching because the instant the power had gone out, the light pollution in the area stopped, leaving the Milky Way without the competition of “sky glow” from light fixtures that shine a portion of their light upward and “light trespass” where poorly shielded or poorly aimed fixtures shine light where it doesn’t belong.

Light pollution is a serious problem that is increasing at a global average of 2.2% per year. In addition to blotting out our view of the nighttime sky, it threatens wildlife and ecosystems, impacts human health and obviously wastes energy.

Plants and animals (including humans) have evolved to depend on the daily cycle of light and dark in a variety of ways. or example, predators use light to hunt, and prey species use darkness as cover.

Light pollution has the potential to tip the balance in entire ecosystems.

New research results are frequently published about the e ect of di erent types of nighttime artificial light on humans, including on our body’s generation of melatonin which has many purposes, including regulating sleep.

The city of Carpinteria recognizes the impacts of poorly-implemented night lighting. The General Plan has provisions to minimize light pollution from new buildings. But there is a lot of room for improvement, and as the General Plan update proceeds, I look forward to even stronger prevention measures being included. But the General Plan only applies to new development, not existing homes and businesses. Those are our responsibility.

A great place to start reducing light pollution is with your own home. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has an excellent online tool (tinyurl.com/

We have a lot of traditions about how lighting is used and how it is expected to look. But after looking at lighting thoughtfully, the conclusion is often that many lights are excessively bright, redundant, aimed where they do nothing useful, or are just not the right light for the job. We pay for the electricity to run each light, so why wouldn’t we want to ensure each light is pulling its weight for us Later this month, April 22-30, is International Dark Sky Week 2022 (idsw. darksky.org). This annual week-long event aims to raise awareness about the negative impacts of light pollution, the solutions that exist and simultaneously celebrate the night.

I urge you to celebrate Dark Sky Week by making one specific improvement to your home’s exterior lighting to make it more night sky friendly. Then that evening, take a moment to go outside and look up.

Tasked with selecting the best map for establishing district elections, the three chose the lesser of the two maps under consideration, Map A-2. They did this in spite of the fact that the newer map, A-3, had a better population balance between districts, a lower level of deviation and was more compact: all requirements under the Elections Code. The attorney made clear that use of incumbents’ places of residence may not be a consideration.

It just so happens that Map A-2 puts Mayor Wade Nomura and Councilmember Roy Lee in separate election districts, while Map A-3, which more closely follows the law, results in the two being in the same district. The separation in A-2 resulted from inclusion of the census tract in which Nomura resides (west of Casitas Pass Road) into the Bailard district.

It’s hard to see how this census tract, all single family homes, fits in with the Bailard district, which is predominantly multi-family. Councilmember Carty’s ustification for supporting this odd configuration was that ia eal runs past both areas and somehow connects them into one neighborhood. Yet if one sights from Mayor Nomura’s tract east along ia eal, there is not another residence within sight. The nearest one is almost a half mile away. his stretches the definition of neighborhood beyond credibility.

In the face of the overwhelming public sentiment for Map A-3, the council chose to go their own way. When it came time to act, a motion was made and seconded before all members had their chance to make comments. That’s not how a fair and open debate is conducted.

It’s unfortunate, but going forward, everything these three do as public servants will be built on a base of deceit.

sanctuary to these animals, especially the seals. The town has done such a good job protecting these seals and giving them a place to breed and rear pups. It would be a shame to develop the exact area where this happens. There’s no doubt that developing this area for the purpose of attracting more tourists, who come and go without thought to the long-term protection of this ecosystem, would cause harmful traffic detrimental to our seal and other animal populations.

Second, it’s a sanctuary to the community. It’s a place for the community to unwind and improve their mental and physical health. The research supporting the benefit of open natural spaces for human mental and physical health strongly advocates for community spaces like the bluffs. Although the proposal would not ruin the entire blu area, it would ruin part of the ecosystem that already receives the least amount of human traffic due to the existing driving range, farms and forested/planted area.

What’s left of the underdeveloped coastline in Carpinteria should stay underdeveloped. It should not be given to a private select few to profit while the rest of the public and natural environment su ers.

Cruise ships return to Santa Barbara County waters, hannel eeper’s mon tor n pro ram resumes

A typical cruise ship generates 30,000 gallons of sewage, 250,000 gallons of greywater (wastewater from galleys, showers, sinks and laundry), 5,000 gallons of oily bilge water, 15 gallons of toxic chemicals, and seven tons of solid waste, as well as air pollution equal to that of 12,000 cars – every day.

Seventeen cruise ships are scheduled to visit Santa Barbara between March and April this year. Except for one, all of them have grades of D or F for water quality impacts, according to Friends of the Earth’s Cruise Ship Monitoring Report Card. Three of the visiting ships received “F” grades for air pollution. Two of the visiting cruise ship lines committed criminal violations of environmental laws between 2017 to 2021.

Prompted by concerns such as these, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper’s cruise ship monitoring program has relaunched, and will engage a select number of cruise ships as they arrive in the area. By communicating with captains upon arrival, the organization’s cruise ship monitoring program aims to safeguard the coastal environment and provide accountability through watchful presence.

Cruise ships generate enormous volumes of waste. A typical cruise ship generates 30,000 gallons of sewage, 250,000 gallons of greywater (wastewater from galleys, showers, sinks and laundry), 5,000 gallons of oily bilge water, 15 gallons of toxic chemicals, and seven tons of solid waste, as well as air pollution equal to that of 12,000 cars – every day.

The city of Santa Barbara asks that captains make a voluntary commitment to refrain from using incinerators and discharging sewage or greywater within 12 miles of Santa Barbara Harbor. However, monitoring compliance with these agreements relies largely on good faith that the captains and crew will abide by these commitments.

Channelkeeper ’s cruise ship monitoring program attempts to address monitoring gaps by providing additional vigilance.

“The cruise ship captains are generally polite, though surprised, to encounter our team out in the Channel,” said Channelkeeper’s Science and Policy Director Benjamin Pitterle. “It’s clear that they aren’t used to being monitored in most of the places that they travel.”

Channelkeeper recently proposed that the city of Santa Barbara also consider adopting an additional vessel speed reduction requirement as part of the voluntary commitments to lower the risk of ship strikes for whales in the channel.

From November to May, approximately 19,000 gray whales migrate along the South Coast. In addition, the abundance of krill in the Santa Barbara Channel

provides feeding grounds for the largest blue whale population in the world and attracts high densities of several endangered baleen whale species, including humpback and fin whales. hese sensitive marine mammals are vulnerable to ship strikes.

Vessel speed reduction requirements are an effective way to decrease propulsion engine emissions and fuel consumption. The organization believes that an additional vessel speed reduction requirement could help reduce the risk of ship strikes for whales in our channel while also lowering harmful greenhouse gas emissions produced by cruise ships.

This recommendation is aligned with current regulations implemented by the Channel Islands National Marine

Sanctuary and Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District. Channelkeeper also suggested that the city establish a committee to evaluate public opinion of its cruise ship program, especially related to climate change goals.

“We look forward to working with city leaders to identify and help develop solutions that help us reach goals related to climate change and keep our environment, economy, and community healthy,” said Channelkeeper’s executive director, Ted Morton.

Local veterans gather to honor Vietnam Veterans Day

Tuesday marked 49 years since the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam, Bie said.

“I don’t recall in my case that I ever had any long discussions about anybody either about where I’d been, what I had seen, what I had done, ow did you feel ’ or what are your feelings about the war. obody wanted to know,” he explained.

“It took a bit of time, but merica finally came round to the idea that you can separate the war from the warrior and began to hold their welcome home Vietnam veterans celebrations, and recognize those who served.”

Bie also emphasized that both civilians and members of Chapter 218 need to continue to support veterans “of all areas,” and give them a warm welcome on their return. “ hose that are coming home even now from some other place in the world we have to do as best as ob as we can to give them a warm welcome,” he emphasized.

“We need to give them and get them the services they need. We need to continue to

support each and every veteran.” ie, who grew up in laska and now lives in Carpinteria, has been president of the group since 2012, and said he has found a tight-knit group of people in the association. e referenced two of the group’s highest ranking officers Brigadier General Frederick Lopez and ieutenant Colonel atricia umpza and said when he spoke to the latter, she was preparing to go back into the hospital for a 12-hour shift as a nurse; she had come out of retirement to help with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bie added that the hall has also now resumed its weekly Wednes day morning veterans breakfasts, a popular social event that had previously been paused due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Susan Willis Ltd. celebrates 30 years

“Many people said, you just have to buy some of everything for the shop, try-and-buy what you like, but I did not follow that,” Willis said. “I did it my way, and it’s worked out because I have unity to my store, not dibs and dabs of things.”

Willis also mentioned her complimentary gift wrapping which saves her customers time on the way to an event. She has also noticed that men are appreciative of this. But the real success she said she has had is in creating good relationships with her customers.

“I’m here all the time and I know what they’re looking at. I see what they like, what they ignore,” Willis said. “I’ve been here so long that I’ve seen many of their kids grow up and have kids, and we’ve become friends. They come here when they need to cry and to laugh.

“I am out of the way, and I knew that when I opened, but 30 years later, I’m still here. I always hope there’s enough good stu to make them remember to come back.”

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P At the east end of Carpinteria Avenue, usan Willis td. may be the definition of a “hidden gem.” Yet the lovely boutique, owned by Susan Willis, has been a hub for community and specialty goods spanning over 30 years.

Willis describes her shop as a general store offering soaps, candles, lotions, inexpensive ewelry, finer ewelry, cozy pajamas and more. Though it didn’t start this way, Willis said evolution has been her trade secret.

“I really get to know my customers’ likes,” Willis said. “When I go buying, I think, ‘Who of my customers would like this?’ Or am I buying it because I like it?”

Willis recommends that store owners personally buy inventory rather than give the task to an employee. “For me, that personal contact is really important,” she said.

As a child, Willis’ father had a garment business. he learned to sew at age five and always knew she wanted a store. She studied fashion design and interior decorating, then worked in a small boutique in Africa for two years before returning home to have kids. While her kids were in grade school, Willis ran a home sewing business.

Susan Willis Ltd. first opened as a slipcover business housing her workroom and showroom under the same roof. A chance contact in Europe led Willis to deal with antique furniture as well. From there, things took o . “ verything I accessorized with would sell,” Willis said.

Willis credited a friend for some of the best business advice she’s received: go to city college and learn the basics.

“I have one friend who’s a very successful businesswoman, a multimillionaire, and she said the advice she told her kids was, no matter what you do, you have to take a business course,” Willis said. “I took a program at Santa Barbara City College for business, then I just jumped right in and learned as I grew. The

Using valuable tools from class and instincts passed on from her father, Willis knew when to bend and shift as the markets changed and how to look for buying patterns and trends. For example, when furniture sales tanked during the recession, and many of her sources were going out of business, Willis rebranded.

The remaining antique furniture became display pieces to transition into a conceptual general store.

Another great piece of business advice came from her dad: avoid partnerships and go solo. “If you do it with a friend, you’ll lose the friendship most of the time,” Willis said. “My other friends who had partnerships said it’s tough because you’re trying to please each other while doing it your way.”

Willis said success also came from advice she did not take.

Rotary Talent Show to take the Alcazar stage April 9

This year’s 13th annual Rotary Talent Showcase will be lighting up the Alcazar Theatre stage on Saturday, April 9.

Talented performers of all disciplines are expected to delight and entertain in the Rotary Club’s beloved variety show, which is also a yearly fundraiser for music programs in Carpinteria schools.

This year, general tickets for the event will be free.

Emceed by local celebrity and KEYT broadcast journalist, John Palminteri, performances will begin at 7 p.m. All ticket holders are also invited to a reception with the performers from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. directly before the curtain opens.

Over 85 performers, including some large group acts, will be showcased this year, with ages of entertainers ranging from 7 to 92.

ry Enticknap and Asa Olsson, called the show “a small-town showcase that really is a big city variety show!”

“There is something for everyone,” the trio said.

Since its inception, the Rotary talent show has raised over $200,000 to purchase new and refurbished musical instruments, sheet music, band uniforms, summer music camp scholarships, academic scholarships and a visit to the symphony for Carpinteria students.

In their daily sixth period class, students learn to play music of di erent styles from classical to contemporary.

Singer/songwriter/musician, Will Bremen, made headlines in for his semi finalist performance on NBC’s talent show, “The Voice.” Breman plays multiple instruments and “live loops” guitar and vocals. Breman will perform “Annemarie” from his 2019 Santa Barbara Soul Music EP.

Carpinteria Middle School Red Hawk String Orchestra

CMS Red Hawk String Orchestra, directed by Tom Pavia, CUSD music instructor, will perform “Rustic Dance” by Mark Williams, and “Hillcrest Impressions” by Sean O’Loughlin. As members of the Red Hawk orchestra, talented middle school students, along with some promising fifth grade students, learn to play string instruments while building a repertoire of songs. All instruments used in the performance have been purchased through sponsorships, donations and proceeds from previous Rotary Talent Showcases.

An Indie singer-songwriter from Carpinteria, Xenia Flores has performed in every Rotary Talent Showcase. A self-taught musician and vocalist, Flores recently released her first official single and music video for her song titled, “Everything is Fine.” Flores will perform “Wish I Knew You” by The Revivalists.

Local baker Christina Welch was visited by Paul Lebeau, president of MockMill Flour grinders and an international advocate for whole and ancient grains, nutrition and health. Lebeau visited Carpinteria to learn more about Welch’s bread, einkorn, which she makes with ancient grain techniques. “I am honored that he is coming to Carpinteria to meet me,” said Welch. Welch bakes and sells her dinkelbrot and einkorn breads for hungry and healthy Carpinterians throughout the area.

Gardening at GranVida with Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria girls in the 7- and 8- year old group visited GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care last week to plant fruits and vegetables in the assisted living facility’s garden. The girls are learning in their gardening program how the ecosystem works and how to introduce healthier items into a meal.

The girls plan to return to GranVida later this spring to check on what they have planted, and to say “hello” to residents.

Sonia Aguila-González named bilingual Teacher of the Year

Canalino Elementary School teacher Sonia Aguila-González has been named this year’s Teacher of the Year by the California Association of Bilingual Education. Aguila-González teaches in the Dual Language Program. Canalino principal, Jamie Persoon, called the award an “incredible recognition.”

Aguila-González was born in Santa Barbara but lived part of her childhood in Mexico before returning to the U.S. She was 11 when she moved back to Santa Barbara and only knew how to count to 10 in English. Aguila said she had an amazing ESL teacher, rs. organsen, who was able to help her gain uency in English. Morgansen inspired Aguila-Gonzalez to pursue a career in second language learning.

With 23 years’ experience in bilingual education, Aguila-González has taught in all primary grades.

“I am honored and humbled to be California Bilingual eacher of the ear,” guila onz lez said. “I am blessed with an amazing profession that allows me to touch young minds and hearts. I am able to make eyes sparkle with curiosity and travel the world with our imagination. I have the best job in the world – and the most important! It is my great joy and passion to help students on their path to become bilingual, bicultural and biliterate.”

Parent Andrea Edmonson said she was impressed by how Aguila-González taught her second grade daughter when the class was conducted virtually because of the pandemic.

“My daughter started the DLI journey as an English-only student, and in aestra guila’s class, she gained the confidence to start using and applying the Spanish language in her oral and written language and began reading Spanish literature with high comprension. Maestra Aguila has an incredible gift in the classroom and she puts her heart and soul into it every year,” dmonson said.

Aguila-González will also represent the state of California at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE).

CMS launches Robotics Program

After a two-year delay, Carpinteria Middle School has booted up its long-awaited Automation and Robotics Unit, thanks to the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) and the Carpinteria Lions Club.

With funds raised from its popular Festival of Trees, the Lions contributed $6,000 and CEF matched the donation to purchase VEX Robotics kits, to launch the CMS program.

The module is a component of the Project Lead the Way curriculum and a part of the existing Media Technology elective at the middle school. The segment builds on the program that started at the elementary level in 2019, with an eye on feeding the future engineering academy-style classes at Carpinteria High School.

Open to all students, the course is for an academic year with three separate classes totaling approximately 80 students, according to instructor Curtis Johnson, who holds a master’s degree in educational technology and was honored as the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Educator of the Year.

“This is my first year teaching this curriculum and I find it very interesting,” Johnson said. “We’re working together.

We teach each other sometimes. They come up with new ideas that were never thought possible. I stay out of the way as much as possible. et them create.”

“I like working with my friends,” student Emmanuel Alvarado said, noting the safe and eager-to-learn atmosphere of the program.

The Automation and Robotics Unit has three units. tudents first learn about the design process, create a schematic for the

ideal computer chair, and then get into groups to try to create the chair. Second, they learn about mechanisms, which includes learning the parts, their function, such as how gears interact, and how to build their designs. In this module, they built both a windmill and pull toy, learning how to make the wheels activate other parts of the robot.

Finally, students learn automation by using Coretex, a natural language coding software used to program the robots.

Making the pull toy was student Sergio Flores’ favorite part so far. “I like the pull toy because whenever you pull it, something cool happens,” the middle schooler said, adding, “I’m looking forward to programming them.” e also said he likes building the robots and figuring out how to put di erent gears together to make them move.

“It’s fun to build things,” classmate Nickolas Baker said, mentioning that his favorite part was making parts that he made move other things.

CMS Principal Lisa O’Shea is a robotics fan and appreciative, too. “CMS is so grateful to CEF for the generous Project Lead the Way donation, which is enabling RedHawks to engage with robotics,” she said. “ echnology teacher, Curtis Johnson, is the perfect teacher to lead these students through the building and programming of the robots.”

“I’m so appreciative of CEF. This is something I would never have had the opportunity to undertake,” ohnson added, “and the kids seem to have a lot of fun.”

Do you wear your “smart” on your sleeve?

LET’S TALK TEK M I C H A E L AV E R Y I have been writing down topics and thoughts on future columns for the past few weeks. When it comes to technology there is no shortage of topics. I am researching and have information on Smart Cities, Smart Grid, Fiber to the Home, The Cloud, Customer Experience and Fintec.

I decided to save those topics for later and shift gears though when I started thinking about all we have experienced over the past couple of years; it has been a period of push and pull, a time of change. Technology has been a lifeboat and helped us to survive, but it also gave us exposure to experience new tools to enhance and streamline our daily lives – i.e., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, iHealth Test, Peloton, Mirror, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, Oculus, Tracescan and so on.

This brings me to the topic of this month’s column, wearable technology, and my opening question. Do you wear your “smart” on your sleeve? Excuse the play on words for the old adage, “you wear your heart on your sleeve.”

Smart, connected products have three core elements: physical components, “smart” components and connectivity components.

Wearable technology has been evolving since the first eyeglasses were invent ed in the 13th century. The Sony Walkman introduced in 1979 took wearable technology to a new level and the smart impact on wearables really kicked in with the release of the Apple iPhone in 2007.

The interrelated trends around miniaturization and portability, wireless communications, power efficient computing, advanced display technologies, high resolution image acquisition and cloud centric connectivity have come together to create the smart devices of today.

The patriarch of these devices, the smartphone, has been with us for over 15 years, and smart wearables are now poised to drive the next great wave of innovation. This wave is shaped by the technologies that came before it.

For a better understanding of the evolution of wearables, it will help to look at the “family tree” and the categories that make up the branches and the evolution over time of each branch. The branches are personal electronics; communications technology; computing technology; and display systems.

I had my first real experience with the power of wearables in 2013 at my daughter’s graduation from Chico State.

to be written, but you can rest assured it will get better and better. Wearables are rapidly advancing in terms of technology, functionality and size, meeting more real-time conditions and needs.

Wearable tech gadgets are primarily used for any one of the following functions: as a fashion statement; as a fitness tracker as a treatment for hearing impairments; for remote treatment of speech and voice disorders such as those

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset held a mini art series last Thursday, hosting both the Alcazar Theatre and the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

Kim Gutierrez, from the Alcazar, showcased the theater’s Women Making Change lineup honoring Women’s History Month; Joyce Donaldson, from the arts center, discussed the center’s exhibits and summer camps. Both are majority volunteer-run organizations.

Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning donates to skate park

This month, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria launched a teen cooking program, Teens Love Cooking, to help local children learn cooking skills and learn how to balance healthy eating habits.

The afterschool program is run by volunteer chefs and cooks over seven sessions.

At the end of the course, students will cook a meal. So far, students have made guacamole, salsa and chocolate zucchini muffins.

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning invited Julia Mayer, from the Carpinteria Skate Foundation, to accept a check on behalf of the skate foundation. The foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to build the Carpinteria Skate Park; funds from the Rotary Club came from the club’s annual pancake breakfast.

The club also recently invited Don Risdon, owner of the 76 Service gas station on Via Real, to discuss the history of gas prices in Carpinteria, as gas prices continue to soar across the country.

“The war (in Ukraine) has spiked some fear and extra buying which is causing increased purchasing and demand. We are changing from a winter to a summer blend of gasoline (changes required in the gasoline based on the environmental heat) and inventory is low at the moment, but prices should lower in the next month or so, but not to the prices we were seeing two months ago,” Risdon told the club.

Risdon also noted there were once 20 gas stations in Carpinteria.

Morning Rotary later invited Alaa Hammouda, a Rotary Peace Fellow from the Gaza Strip. A recipient of the Rotary Peace Fellow Scholarship, she spoke about her work in Gaza, and how she immigrated to the United Students with her two children while pregnant to complete her master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Gaza is a country with limited community resources, like food assistance, limited health care with limited resources, rental assistance. It is a place to survive, not to thrive,” she told the club. She spoke about her community, and how “families are surrounded by neighborly support and community members maintaining hope to keep people going.”

Harbor seal milk is about 50% fat. Until weaned, pups can often be seen clinging to or in immediate proximity to their mothers in the water. Close to their moms, presumably, they are learning foraging skills.

A loose dog charged through the rookery Friday.

Over seals became panicked and ed into the water with one pup cornered. No injury was seen but by the time Sealwatchers left, many pups had still not reunited with their moms. No owner ever appeared.

Additional disturbances were caused by a beachwalker with a dog, a runner and a truck on the pier.

He was experiencing severe delirium tremens. An ambulance was summoned, and he was transported to the hospital.

The subject then walked away after the reporting party told him, “No.” Deputies found the man in the middle of the street spinning in circles. Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary. The reporting party reported an unknown suspect entered her home while she, her husband and two dogs were there. The suspect only took prescription narcotics from her purse, leaving behind cash and credit cards. The reporting party said the dogs never alerted to the suspect. When police arrived, the dogs immediately alerted to their presence. The reporting party has had multiple surgeries on her back and has been using prescription pain killers for an extended period. Public Notices CARPINTERIA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS CONCERNING THE REDISTRICTING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTORAL DISTRICTS California Elections Code § 22001 Notice is hereby given that the Carpinteria Valley Water District Board of Directors will consider redistricting boundaries of the five by-district divisions established in August 2020 with the adoption of Resolution 1083 as part of the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) process and implementation of a division-based election system beginning with the November 2022 election.

As such, the boundaries of each of the five divisions was established prior to 2020 Census data availability. Due to the updated Census data, the previously adopted by-district map is no longer applicable and a new redistricting map will need to be considered, approved, and adopted by the Board.

The District will hold public hearings to receive public input concerning the redistricting map on the following dates: Wednesday, April 6, 2022 Wednesday, April 13, 2022 The meetings will be held at 5:30 pm at the CVWD Board Room, located at 1301 Santa Ynez Ave, Carpinteria CA, 93013 and by teleconference (Zoom Meeting).

Live and recorded broadcasts will be available to watch on the District Website at www.cvwd.net. Covid-19 restrictions may apply to in-person meeting attendance.

Check the Board Agenda, available on the District’s website, a week prior to the hearing date for details about the meeting.

Following the initial public hearing, draft maps of potential redistricted boundaries will be drafted and available on the District website for consideration and public input on the content of those maps at the April 13, 2022 public hearing.

Following the public hearing on April 13th, the Board of Directors may adopt an ordinance implementing the redistricted map.

The Warriors welcomed the track and field athletes from Bishop iego and Cate for a “triangular” meet between the three schools, with Carpinteria coming out on top in both the boys and girls overall scores.

In the boys competition, Wes Chung won both hurdles races, notching a time of 1 . 6 in the 11 -meter high hurdles and 6. 1 for the -meter intermediates. Chung was also the lead runner for Carpinteria’s winning x relay team.

The Carpinteria boys scored a total of 6 points, with Cate coming in second place with . points, and Bishop rounding out the competition with points.

Ainslee Alexander continued a stellar year all around, and won two events for the girls s uad. She umped a length of ’1 . ’’ in the triple ump, and won the pole vault with a height of ’ ’’.

The Warriors girls came out on top in a close battle for first place, with points Cate came in second with , and Bishop finished with 1 overall.

Carpenteria Coach Van Latham said that both Cate and Bishop have “ uite a few excellent athletes,” but the Warriors earned points with their depth, taking many second and third place finishes.

“We also benefited from having entries in almost every event, ‘’ Latham said. “We had the chance to experiment with a few athletes in new events as well. It was an en oyable, competitive meet with local rivals.”

Carpinteria will head to Santa Paula for their next meet on Thursday.

Warriors take on Santa Ynez Pirates in dual swim meet

Carpinteria hosted Santa Yne for a two-team swim meet, with the Warriors earning a win in the girls competition, and the visiting Pirates narrowly taking the boys win by a narrow margin.

Senior Piper Clayton and unior Erin tsuki each won their two individual events, with Clayton establishing a personal best in both events, including a CIF consideration time in the free with 1. tsuki earned herself an automatic CIF bid with a time of 11 in the free and 1 for the backstroke. Lilli Nemet set two personal-best times, while Taylor Classen oined Clayton, tsuki and Nemet for the winning medley relay and free relay. Malaya Morente secured the victory for t h e W ar r i or s i n t h e 10 b r eas t s t r oke .

The girls took the overall win with a score of 1 -6 .

For the boys, senior Matthew Lamberti and unior ustin Main each claimed double individual victories in what was a much closer team match. Sophomore ackson Melton won the individual medley, earning season best and CIF consideration time. The Warriors’ winning relay team of x freestyle relay of Main, Melton, Lamberti and acob Taff was also a season best.

After initially believing the Warriors won by a few points, coach on tsuki found a scoring error that ticked the win ever so slightly to the Pirates, who won by percentage points.

Carpinteria will now prepare for a meet with Thousand aks.
