Supply chain disruptions delay Heath Ranch Park playground

SB Zoo invites public to help name a wallaby

The public is invited to help the Santa Barbara Zoo choose a name for one of the female Bennett’s wallabies living in the new Australian Walkabout. The Santa Barbara Zoo staff along with the wallabies’ care team have narrowed the names down to four contenders to choose from: Inala (in-AH-la): a suburb of Brisbane, Australia, also means “rest time” or “nighttime” in the Bundjalung language of the northeast region of New South Wales and the southeast region of Queensland.

Lowanna (loh-WAH-na): means “woman” in the Palawa language of Tasmania.

Coral: for the famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Kalina (kaa-LEE-na): means “to love” in the Wemba Wemba language of Victoria.

Voting began on Feb. 22 and ends at 5 p.m. on March 1. To vote, visit bit.ly/ name-wallaby. The winning name will be announced on the zoo’s social media channels on March 2.

Carpinteria resident arrested for Via Real culvert fire

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 24-yearold Carpinteria resident on Monday for the Via Real culvert fire, which was set over the weekend. The fire broke out in the storm drain system beneath Highway 101 and the 5700 block of Via Real on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 19, and early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 20.

The resident, Santiago Garcia-Soriano, admitted he started the Feb. 19 fire to a fire investigator from the fire district and to a deputy after he was spotted “digging into the hillside near a drainage culvert” in Carpinteria creek, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

He was booked for felony arson to property and possession of cocaine, with a $250,000 bail. His occupation is listed as “day laborer” in custody logs.

Carpinteria-Summerland firefighters were out picking up dinner Saturday evening when they noticed smoke, called it into the South Coast Dispatch Center and responded to the scene at approximately 5:55 p.m., according the Montecito Fire Protection District. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from two manhole covers and another opening under a bridge along Highway 101 between Bailard Avenue and Casitas Pass Road, as well as along the 5700 block of Via Real.

Southern California Gas was called to the scene and determined no gas lines were involved in the incident. Carpinteria Sanitary District also responded to investigate whether a broken sewer line could be the source of the fire but that was also ruled out.

Due to firefighting efforts and safety concerns, Highway 101 northbound was shut down at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The fire broke out on Saturday in the storm drain system beneath Highway 101. from Bailard Avenue to Casitas Pass Road. The 5700 block of Via Real was also closed to traffic.

The storm drain where the fire occurred is lined with a thick plastic material which caused the fire to continue burning with intensity for several hours.

Firefighters were able to gain control and extinguish the flames by 7:45 p.m. on Saturday by pumping large quantities of water into the storm drain.

Fire officials coordinated with Caltrans and California Highway Patrol to reopen the northbound lanes of Highway 101 by 9:20 p.m. on Saturday. However, Via Real remained closed.

During the first incident, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire was assisted by Montecito Fire, Santa Barbara City Fire

and Ventura County Fire departments.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist with traffic control.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, local road construction workers reported seeing smoke coming from the storm drain system in the same area. The closure of Highway 101 northbound from Bailard Avenue to Casitas Pass Road was reissued to allow for emergency operations at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Carpinteria-Summerland firefighters responded to the scene and requested Montecito Fire’s engine that is specially equipped with a compressed air foam System (CAFS). Firefighters sprayed the foam into the storm drain to eliminate the fire’s oxygen source and successfully

extinguish it.

As a result of this firefighting tactic, foam entered Carpinteria Creek. Environmentalists from the city of Carpinteria and a Santa Barbara County Hazmat inspector determined that the firefighting foam material is an allowable discharge under the State Water Board’s regulations. It is expected to dissipate naturally.

By 5 a.m. Sunday, the closure of Highway 101 northbound was lifted.

The 5700 block of Via Real will be closed until a safety assessment is completed. At this time, community members are asked to abide by the closure due to potential safety issues along that stretch of road.

Both fires are currently being investigated by Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.

State introduces next phase of Covid-19 response

California introduced last week its next phase of response to Covid-19: S.M.A.R.T.E.R., or shots, masks, awareness, readiness, testing, education and Rx. The plan outlines how the state will tackle the pandemic moving forward, which includes increasing vaccination rates – particularly among children – meeting PPE requirements, tracking cases to identify new variants, and more.

Per the plan, the state seeks to: administer 200,000 vaccines per day; have a 75 million stockpile of masks; promote vaccinations, masking and other measures in all counties, through 150 community-based organizations; sequence at least 10% of positive Covid-19 specimens; add 3,000 clinic staff within two to three weeks of requested need; perform at least 500,000 Covid-19 tests per day; and expand school vaccination sites by 25%.

“As we enter the next phase of the pandemic, the state is better equipped than ever to protect Californians from COVID-19 with smart strategies that save lives and advance our ongoing recovery,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a press release.

“Building on proven tools – rooted in science and data – that have been honed over the past two years, we’re keeping our guard up with a focus on continued readiness, awareness and flexibility to adapt to the evolving pandemic. As we have throughout the pandemic, the state will continue applying the lessons we’ve learned about the virus to keep California moving forward.”

The county reported 911 new cases during the week of Feb. 11 and 17, for 916 active cases and 83,363 total cases.

There were 70 reported hospitalizations that week, with 13 in the ICU. Ten new deaths were reported, for

639 total deaths in the county due to the Covid-19. On Feb. 14, five deaths were reported, with all five older than 70.

Four had underlying health conditions, according to the county Covid-19 daily reports. One lived in a congregate care side. Two lived in Santa Maria, one in the city of Santa Barbara, one in Lompoc and one in Orcutt.

As of Feb. 18, 67.3% of the county is fully vaccinated, with 71.6% of those eligible vaccinated. As of Feb. 1, the majority variant in the county is the Omicron variant.

The next phase of California’s Covid-19 response plan seeks to increase vaccinations and testing, among other goals.

Santa Barbara County Child Care Survey Lack of stable childcare has been identified as one of the many factors that have contributed to a workforce shortage both locally and nationally. That is why last year the County Board of Supervisors agreed to set aside $2 million of ARPA funds to address the sustainability of the childcare sector. Obituaries

Michael Gilligan 8/19/1937 – 2/04/2022

Michael James Gilligan passed away peacefully on Feb. 4 at home, surrounded by his family. Mike was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Aug. 19, 1937, to James and Helen Gilligan. He was one of seven children.

He was a loving husband to his wife, Anne, of 63 years, and a devoted father to eight children: Celia, Mike, Susanne, Katrina, Karen, Pat, Deborah and Shaun.

He was a father-in-law to Eric, Kerry, Paul, Tom, Joe and Susie; and a grandfather to 18 grandkids: Joey, Chrissy (David) Amanda, Malory (Jordan), Diana (Derrick), Katie, Alicia, Sarah (Mike), Jacob (Kelsey), Thomas, Shane, Derrick, Andrew (Emily), Jordyn, Garrett (Alina), Morgan, Trisha and Andrew. He was a great-grandfather to 17 littles: Josiah, Tobias, Tabitha, Rylie, Logan, Blake, Rowen, Peyton, River Lynn, Sawyer, Ryett, Ryan, Holden, Isaac, Nathan, Max and Penny.

Mike spent his childhood on a family farm until he joined the Air Force in January of 1956. Mike served with honor

and dignity until January 1980, receiving military achievements and awards, including Master Crew Chief Award, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship, NCO Academy Graduate, Army Good Conduct Medal with two bronze service stars, Air Force Longevity Service Award with five oakleaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four oakleaf clusters. Additionally, he wrote the training program for the B52 mechanics and maintenance. His service deployment included several locations in the United States as well as international deployments.

Mike was introduced to Anne by his best friend and future brother-in-law Bill Goodwin. Mike held many titles during his life including PTA president, seamstress, baker of delicious pies, high school band booster club (“You will Never Walk Alone”), carpenter, mechanic, Little League coach, master of standing on his head, fixer of all things, friend to all and the most important title of all, God-Fearing Family Man. In 1986, Mike and Anne settled in Carpinteria. Shortly after moving to Carpinteria, they became involved in St. Joseph Catholic Church and quickly fell in love with the community. Eventually, Anne volunteered Mike to run the annual festival, creating lifelong friendships within the Carpinteria community.

A funeral mass was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with burial immediately following at Carpinteria Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Barry Horwitz 8/25/1947 – 2/15/2022

Barry Horwitz – husband, father, grandfather and founder of BH Builders – passed away on Feb 15, 2022, from multiple health complications. He was 74 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife Pat of 52 years, his son Justin, his daughter-in-law Lisa, his grandson Jasper, and his two sisters Rhoda and Adalyn.

John Steen 10/21/1930 – 1/28/2022

John Steen passed away on Jan. 28 at Serenity House in Santa Barbara after a short illness. He was 91 years old.

John was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, to Earle and Laura Steen, and was raised in Verona, New Jersey. He joined the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. From an early age, John wanted to be an electrical engineer, and earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology). He served in the U.S. Army at White Sands, New Mexico, received an honorable discharge, and went to work for General Electric. Among his other employers over the years were Honeywell, Kaman Tempo and Delco. He continued to work until age 83.

While at White Sands, John met Frances Smith. They married in 1956, moved

to California, had two daughters, and in 1962 landed in Santa Barbara where the family remains to this day.

John was always interested in the ocean, and in the 1970s, he was NAUI certified for SCUBA diving. He loved being on and in the water, especially near the Santa Barbara Channel Islands.

He shared his love of the ocean with his daughters, taking them regularly to the beach, teaching them to swim and body surf, and how to identify various sea animals in tide pools. In 1976, he helped his daughter Janet with her NAUI diving certification.

Travel became an interest of John’s, especially after meeting his good friend, Norma Dockery. During their 40-year friendship, she introduced him to the pleasures of seeing the world, and brought much joy to his life until she passed in 2020.

John is survived by his daughters, Janet Lauren Steen of Carpinteria and Molly Steen of Santa Barbara; his granddaughter, Emily Steen Edwards Poirier and great-grandson, Evan Kem Poirier of Redmond, Oregon; a brother, Charles Steen of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey; and his sister, Carol Borthwick of Mt. Arlington, New Jersey. He will be greatly missed by all of them.

At present, there are no plans for a memorial service. The family asks that any donations in John’s memory be made to VNA Health of Santa Barbara, which provided him with care and support in the last months of his life.

in 1979, and shared their lives together in the same house on Vallecito Road for over 40 years. He was an exceptionally talented draftsman and woodworker. His home was filled with hand-built craftsman furniture and beautiful customized details.

As a well-respected general contractor, he designed and built over 20 houses in the Carpinteria area. He took enormous pride in the quality and design of his projects, and as a result, he built a successful business solely on word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied homeowners.

Barry had an immense love for the ocean. Throughout his life, he followed his passions for sailing, scuba diving, kayaking and surfing. He could often be seen cruising around Carpinteria in one of his cherished custom cars. He handbuilt a matte black Ford Roadster hot rod, and he meticulously restored a ’64 Chevelle station wagon.

Barry would like to be remembered as someone who loved his family, his friends, the ocean and good BBQ. There will be a beachside celebration of his life for friends and family this spring.

Move on

I am a senior citizen and a grandparent. I agree with Dan Patterson in his letter, “Caution or Superstition?” (CVN, Vol. 28, No. 21). It is time to move on and stop the Covid-19 insanity. That applies to health officials, parents and politicians.

The lockdowns did not stop the virus, the masks did not work, and the vaccines and the boosters did not keep us from getting Covid-19 or spreading it. My husband took all the precautions and got all the vaccines and boosters. And yet, he still got the Omicron variant. Thankfully, the Omicron variant is mild, and he only had cold symptoms.

It is also time to take a hard look at what we are doing to our children. Because of severe Covid-19 restrictions, many children have lost a year of schooling and are forced to wear masks all day.

Their social and psychological health has been negatively impacted. The children represent our future.

Going forward, it is clear that Covid-19 variants are here to stay. The good news is they are less dangerous. As a result, many countries are lessening or doing away with drastic restrictions. It is time for America to do the same. It is time to live our lives and get back to some form of normalcy.

When our city moves to district-based elections, we will each lose 4/5ths of our current say in our local government. I don’t think it is in the best interest of any resident to move forward with this plan – yet I assume it is inevitable, and there seems to be little public outcry.

My wife and I have owned our home in Carpinteria since 1975. I have seen a lot of changes in all those years – some good, some bad. Something that really stands out in my mind is the large number of impatient and rude drivers that have appeared on our local freeway. While widening our freeway is necessary, driving through the work zone at a safe speed has gone out the window.

Sealwatch has clarified that pelicans are not known to be interested in the afterbirth, but they enjoy the area because they can hang out there without being bothered. Seagulls, however, do go after the afterbirth and when they don’t have to squabble with the seagulls, volunteers have seen turkey vultures interested also.

90 miles per hour, running up on bumpers or changing lanes between cars, almost causing collisions. So far from what I hear, no one has been killed, but how long do you think that will last? Highway Patrol can only do so much. Their budget has been cut so much, they do not have the manpower anymore to make a dent in the problem.

The responsibility is with all of us to be better drivers, slow down and be courteous. That way you will not kill anybody by being impatient, texting, speeding and tailgating on your way to your destination. You and everyone else can return home safely to loved ones, rather than to jail or the morgue. If you feel that will never happen to you, give it time – eventually the cards will go against you, and you will lose.

Drive safer and look out for others.

The wrong development

Thank you to the city for its new “Hot Topic” website on the proposed Red Tail plans to develop the Bailard Avenue property. And, thank you, to the speakers and letter writers who voiced their opposition to the project at Friday’s conceptual review at Santa Barbara County South Board of Architectural Review (SBAR).

Despite our city’s request that this proposal be abandoned, despite the 2000+ signatures of residents who oppose it, and despite letters to the editor and articles decrying it, the Housing Authority of Santa Barbara County and its private developer partner submitted their application in November.

At the SBAR hearing we saw a slick PowerPoint presentation. We saw disregard for current zoning and historical use of this property. We saw one driveway for 276 cars entering and leaving the highly trafficked intersection at the north end of Bailard Avenue – where two children have been injured and where the gridlock dangers in emergency situations are very real to the residents of the adjacent condos. We saw three-story buildings 46’ high that one SBAR member commented would be seen from the freeway. We saw only 41 affordable apartments, but 128 market rate units which will be owned and offered at whatever price the big winner in this proposal – the developer – wishes to set. We saw trendy “resort amenities” for market-rate residents only, including the community center/large

fitness room/lounge, while affordable residents are located at the back of the property with a community room.

We saw a development suited not for Carpinteria Valley but for Orange County – understandable since this proposal originated from the Irvine offices of FPA Multifamily.

I urge residents of Carpinteria Valley to take the time to understand why it is the wrong development and the wrong location. Make your concerns known to every county supervisor.

Biden is a disaster

President Biden has deployed U.S. troops to Eastern Europe. As I write this, Ukraine has not been invaded – but our

country was invaded at the southern border almost immediately after Biden took office. The assault continues to this day.

Biden is completely to blame for this; he opened the door for the flow of undocumented immigrants, drugs and disease into the U.S. Our beleaguered border patrol has been given no assistance by Biden. He hasn’t even visited the “front lines” and totally ignores the continuing invasion of our country that he allowed to happen.

When Biden took office, the U.S. had been energy independent. He temporarily shut down or curtailed many of our internal energy suppliers. We are now dependent on OPEC and Russia – yes, we buy needed oil from Russia – for the oil needed for energy production.

The Afghanistan debacle was the result of Biden ignoring the advice of military leaders who, among other things, wanted to leave some U.S. troops there.

He has had the absolute gall to call the withdrawal a “success.” Biden left good people behind despite saying he would not do this. He left tens of millions of dollars of military equipment to the Taliban.

Starvation is now a serious problem for the Afghan population along with the mistreatment of women as a result of a Biden decision to “totally withdraw.”

There are more problems to name – inflation, food and gasoline prices, crime, Hunter Biden, the wealth of the Biden family – but understandably, the number of words is limited in letters to the CVN. I dislike writing this letter. Joe Biden is my president. I wanted him to be successful. But I now genuinely believe that Biden/Harris represents the worst U.S. leadership team in my lifetime of 83 years. You have every right to disagree.

Construction area continues to see slowdowns, accidents

The Highway 101 construction area – which stretches between Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito – continues to see traffic slowdowns and accidents.

Saturday saw an eight-car crash near Sheffield Drive just before 7 a.m., which forced closures of the southbound lanes on the highway. On Monday, a crash also blocked the first lane on the freeway between Sheffield and Evans drives. These are two of several crashes in the construction areas reported this month.

Speed limits are set at 55mph in construction zones.

Lane, on- and off-ramp closures continue in the area, while crews work on expanding the lanes and building sound walls.

On the northbound side, one lane between Route 150 and Sheffield Drive – as well as the off-ramps at Bailard Avenue and North Padaro Lane – are closed Sunday nights between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Those same areas are closed Monday through Thursday nights, between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

On the southbound side, one lane between Sheffield Drive and Route 150, as well as the on- and off-ramps at South Padaro Lane, Santa Claus Lane and Bailard Avenue, are closed Sunday nights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Those same areas are closed Monday through Thursday nights, between 8 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

The on-ramp at Sheffield Drive will remain closed until June 12, and the off-ramp at Evans Avenue will be closed until Oct. 24.

Bailard Avenue housing project faces backlash at county level

BY EVELYN SPENCE The Red Tail Multifamily housing development, known colloquially as the Bailard Avenue housing project, was met with backlash from public commenters and local officials alike on Friday.

Friday’s Santa Barbara County South Board of Architectural Review (SBAR) meeting saw concerns from the board about the proposed 169-unit apartment complex. The large-scale project has four architectural firms on board and is partnered with the Housing Authority of the county of Santa Barbara.

The proposed project contains seven large buildings: six with market-rate apartments, and one with affordable-housing units. The buildings fluctuate between two and three stories, offering one- and two-bedroom units, as well as amenities including a playground, dog parks, a pool, community rooms and outdoor kitchens. The complex also plans for 276 uncovered parking spaces and 32 bike racks.

The 6.97-acre land at 1001-1003 Bailard Ave. falls just outside city boundaries – putting control in the hands of the county, rather than the city – and lies on the urban-agricultural boundary line. The city tabled talks with the county in September 2021 over disagreements with city control over the project.

But the city of Carpinteria’s issue with the project, beyond the lack of control, lies in its sole entrance and exit: a small stretch at the end of Bailard Avenue.

Christie Boyd, part of the Save the Bailard Farm Coalition, likened the entrance and exit to “the size of a residential driveway.”

“This county project borders the city of Carpinteria on the north and east. It will be known as being part of Carpinteria, even though it is technically in the county, not the city,” Boyd told the board on Friday. “The developers would like us to believe this is a low-cost housing development. It is not. It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is an ill-conceived plan.”

Project applicant Brent Little told the board that there is no other available entrance to the complex.

“We recognize that the entry to the project does have some challenges to it, but we frankly have no other option,” Little said.

pressed similar sentiments to Boyd’s: due to its large scale and density, the project, as put in a letter written by Susie Anderson, “may be consistent and acceptable in Orange County. It is not in Carpinteria Valley.”

an “​​ill-suited and dangerous proposal.”

“Surely, the developers don’t think it is at all safe or compatible with the existing neighborhood. That one road cannot safely accommodate the increased traffic,” Bernstein wrote.

Further comments on proposed Santa Claus Lane cannabis dispensary

The proposed Roots cannabis dispensary came back to the board’s agenda on Friday, seeking further conceptual input.

The project, proposed for 3823 Santa Claus Lane, has come before the board several times. Friday’s meeting addressed prior board comments, including issues with lighting and parking.

Edward de Vicente, from DMHA Architecture, said the planners have “finetuned” the parking, with 12 parking spots located in the rear of the building,

and the traffic report has been conceptually approved. He added, in response to architect and public questions, that the lights are dark-sky compliant.

“For decades, this building operated as a bustling restaurant, as part of the broader Santa Claus Lane roadside,” he said. “You’re going to get a lot of public comments around the ingress and the egress, and I want to remind the board that for decades, this operated as a bustling restaurant, and we aren’t aware of is-

sues for people to get in and out safely.”

Of the 10 letters submitted for the item, nine were against a dispensary in the area.

Consent Reviewer Alex Pujo said the improvements are minor, and from an architectural review standpoint, the project is acceptable.

“I find the project perfectly acceptable. If it was not a cannabis project, we would have been done with this months ago.”

county supervisor who currently lives in Carpinteria, said the complex sets “a dangerous precedent for future development on urban boundary lines anywhere in the county.”

Little defended the reasons behind the density of the complex’s design.

“I understand there’s a lot of acrimony in the community toward the project, and that certainly isn’t our intent,” Little said. “Unfortunately, because of the economics, we can’t just make it smaller. It just doesn’t pencil to provide affordable housing without the market-rate (units).”

The board also expressed concern over the height of the buildings, which can reach up to 46 feet in some places – well above the height limit of 35 feet. Planners are requesting a waiver of the 35-foot height limit.

“It’s difficult to support it,” board architect John Vrtiak said, noting concern with the three-story buildings, while board architect Valerie Froscher said she has “many issues” with the project.

“What really leaps forward is the letter from the director of community development of the city of Carpinteria, the opposition of the Carpinteria City Council, and the (comment) by Nick Bobroff, senior planner from Carpinteria, that illustrate the fundamental problems with this project,” she said.

The proposal is still in conceptual stages and will return to SBAR. It will ultimately come before the county board of supervisors for approval.

Keeping secrets: Business advice from BlueStar Parking CVN

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P When he worked for corporate valet services in San Francisco, Travis Hawley was struck by how companies hired drivers at random – without resumes – just to get a franchise off the ground.

He thought it odd, their questionable ethics, inauthenticity and lack of connection to the community. So, when a chance opportunity brought Hawley to Santa Barbara, he was inspired to set roots and mold a business worthy of the people it would serve.

“I thought, not every valet company needs to be a franchise where you use corporate names and logos, and just hire random people and make it a go,” Hawley said. “There should be a niche.

There should be a company that matched the market, and, for me, that market was Santa Barbara and Montecito.”

Twelve years later, with nearly 100 employees on the payroll, BlueStar Parking serves many of the community’s restaurants, venues, businesses and private parties.

But it was Hawley’s first account that made his career. And it happened on a beautiful, sunny day in Carpinteria.

“The Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet

Club was our flagship account, and from that, it just kind of expanded,” Hawley said. Shooting out of the gates with a big client allowed BlueStar to introduce high-level customer service to polo patrons, and word quickly spread.

“I’m fond of saying, ‘We’re a valet parking company, but parking cars is just one small aspect of what we do,’” Hawley said. “We are a guest service provider first, and parking cars is just one way that we serve guests.”

Keeping secrets is one of those services. It comes in handy when a party guest gets drunk and forgets which car he drove, then belittles you for delivering the wrong car until the registration proves he owns the vehicle. Yes, that really happened. But that customer ’s identity stays in the vault. (Update: the man got home safely, and he is a steady client to this day.)

“Valets know the secrets of the clients, and there’s a lot of skeletons in those closets,” Hawley said. “We don’t talk, so my trade secret is that I don’t give out secrets.”

Hawley explained the best business advice he has heard is to know what you don’t know. “It’s better to grasp that notion ahead of time,” he said. “Then reach out to people who do know, and use those assets and tools to your advantage.”

For example, when Hawley’s company was first getting off the ground, he told his employees that an owner didn’t have to be particularly great at anything to run a successful company. It is a matter of being okay with doing one thing – or a few things – really well and getting help where needed. Hawley said he was great

Chamber announces finalists for Jr. Carpinterian of the Year

Each year, three outstanding students vie for the title of Jr. Carpinterian of the Year, and this year’s finalists are high-achieving standouts. From award-winning poetry recitations to college courses, community service and athletic honors, Sierra Mayoral, Eduardo Vences and Kate Cooney have garnered impressive resumes for their age.

The Jr. Carpinterian of the Year awards are organized by the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce. All finalists receive a monetary award intended for college tuition. This year’s winner will receive $4,000 and the two other finalists will receive $1,500 each. The Jr. Carpinterian of the Year will be announced at the Carpinteria Community Awards Banquet at Rincon Beach Club on Saturday, March 12. To purchase tickets, visit sbscchamber.com.

Kate Cooney

Carpinteria High School senior Kate Cooney has been a Warriors athlete her high school career, running cross country all four years and earning top honors on the team including the MVP Award (2021), Coaches Award (2019, 2021) and Rookie of the Year (2018). She has also played on the Warriors varsity soccer and track and field teams for three seasons, with a season upcoming in track and field this spring.

Cooney’s athletic prowess and distinguished sportsmanship was recognized last year when she was awarded one of the school’s most prestigious honors, the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award, given to only one student-athlete each year. This year, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table lauded Cooney with the elite coach-nominated title, Student Scholar Athlete of the Year, awarded annually to one CHS student who maintains high academic standing while also excelling at sports.

Indeed, Cooney has a near perfect academic record receiving all As and A+s all four years (with not a B in sight).

Mock Trial, yearbook and Spanish Club are just a few of the clubs in which Cooney has held leadership positions. She was also a member of Junior State of America for four years, holding the positions of assembly member in 2019 and president in 2022.

Impressively, Cooney has achieved academic and athletic success while also working part-time for Respite, Inc., a Tri-Counties Regional Center organization that works to provide special needs children with part-time caretakers. For the past two years, Cooney has been the caretaker for two children with autism for 2-10 hours a week and until recently, Cooney spent most of her weekends working as a hostess at Via Vai in Montecito.

Eduardo Vences

Community involvement is extensive on Eduardo Vences’ biography. He is the current president of Future Leaders of America in Carpinteria; a youth leader at his church, where he also coaches singers to help improve their vocals and plays the drums; a school cafeteria volunteer, serving lunch to his peers; and an ambassador at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (pre-Covid-19).

As president of Future Leaders of America, Vences has led a youth advocacy initiative for a cleaner and healthier Carpinteria, speaking at City Council on the negative consequences of electronic smoking devices and advocating for a smoke-free multi-unit housing policy in Carpinteria to reduce the negative impact of

At Carpinteria High School, Vences has served as the president of Spanish Club and CADE (Celebrating Adversity, Diversity and Education Club). The CADE Club was instrumental, along with Diversify Our Narrative, in advocating for the addition of a Multicultural Literature class at CHS. Since his freshman year, Vences has excelled on the cross country and track and field team, earning in cross country Most Valuable Player Frosh/Soph (2018) and Most Valuable Player Varsity (2022). Academically, Vences has stellar marks and a plethora of college credits from Santa Barbara City College where he has taken courses in US History, Calculus, Psychology and the History of Pop and Rock & Roll. He has won CHS awards in science, math, Spanish and overall academic excellence.

In addition to his school and service endeavors, Vences is a part-time employee at Reynaldo’s Bakery. Just about any Saturday or Sunday afternoon you can find him behind the pastry case, serving coffee and pastries, washing dishes and helping out wherever needed.

Sierra Mayoral

Academically driven and talented in the arts, Sierra Mayoral has a remarkably well-rounded profile. Mayoral has danced with Curtis Studio for 10 years, including as a member of the studio’s competition corps. Last year, she was the Santa Barbara County Poetry Out Loud champion for poetry recitation, going on to represent the county at the California state competition.

Additional wordsmith honors include the Santa Barbara Reads Poetry Contest (selectee, 2021) and the Santa Barbara Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Contest (honorable mention, 2021). At CHS, she has participated in the school theater program Muses, acting, constructing sets and choreographing.

Passionate about the arts, Mayoral has completed over 200 hours of community service, primarily at the Alcazar Theatre and the Carpinteria Arts Center. At the Alcazar, Mayoral has operated the lighting board and designed lighting for the annual production of “A Christmas Carol” and volunteered at summer theater camps. At the arts center, she also volunteered at camps along with helping with community projects.

Current president of Mock Trial and secretary for the CADE Club, Mayoral has taken leadership positions in school clubs throughout her high school career. She is also a co-lead of the youth-led community advocacy group Diversify Our Narrative Carpinteria. In this role, Mayoral spoke at school board meetings in support of adding a Multicultural Literature class to the CHS curriculum. The course is now in its second year of implementation.

During the pandemic, Mayoral led a diverse book club for teenagers and presented a webinar conversation with Ethnic Studies Now! Santa Barbara. She also received the Youth Making Change grant to purchase diverse books for English classes.

When not in school, Mayoral works at The Good Plow, serving ice cream, bussing tables and refilling waters.

Supes consider modifying acreage caps for cannabis processing

Under pressure from growers, the county Board of Supervisors is considering modifying the acreage caps in its cannabis licensing ordinance, a move it says will encourage the construction of marijuana processing buildings in unincorporated areas and staunch the loss of tax revenue to other California counties.

On Feb. 15, the board voted 4-1 in concept, with Chair Joan Hartmann opposed, to remove buildings for the “drying, curing and trimming” of cannabis from the acreage caps for grows in the Carpinteria Valley and North County. These caps have been set at 186 acres and 1,575 acres, respectively, since 2019.

Citing “very few existing or proposed processing facilities in the county,” the County Executive Officer told the board this month that the county faces “a substantial loss of tax revenue” be-

The amendments now on the table, county officials said, would result in more processing buildings here, including stand-alone buildings on properties where no cannabis is under cultivation.

Typically, they would be about 25,000 square feet in size.

Additionally, county records show, removing acreage for processing from the caps would free up about 12 more acres for cultivation – three acres of outdoor grows in the North County and nine acres in Carpinteria Valley greenhouses.

“The sooner we do this, the better,” Supervisor Steve Lavagnino, who represents the Santa Maria Valley, said at a

The Proposed Project is a request for a Conditional Use Permit (Case No. 19CUP-00000-00062), a Development Plan Amendment to 82-DP-30 (Case No. 20AMD-00000-00003), and a Coastal Development Permit (Case No. 19CDP-00000-00157) to allow for the construction of a new 25,418-square-foot, 25-foot-tall cannabis processing building and a detention basin to capture run-off from the structure.

The site is currently developed with five existing greenhouses permitted under the original Development Plan, Case No. 82-DP-30, and one existing warehouse, which was permitted under a Modification to the Development Plan, Case No. 86-M-4. Of the existing 379,757 square feet of development, 356,070 square feet is currently used for cannabis cultivation as approved by Coastal Development Permit, Case No. 18CDP-00000-00077. The proposed processing building will be used for the storage, drying, trimming, and packaging of cannabis grown both on-site and off-site. Up to 50% of the product processed in the proposed processing building will be grown off-site.

Proposed grading for the Project includes 1,400 cu. yd. of cut and 1,000 cu. yd. of fill. Other required site improvements include the construction of a new storm water detention basin and septic system. No vegetation or trees are proposed for removal.

External lighting will be provided by sixteen wall-mounted full cut-off LED motion detector lights on the east, north, and west sides of the proposed building near doorways. In addition to the existing vapor phase system, the odor control system will include a new vapor phase unit, carbon filters, air curtains at main doors, spray insulation, and HVAC and negative pressure within rooms most likely to create odors.

The proposed building includes carbon filters in all processing areas, HVAC, air curtains on exterior doors, spray insulation within the building, and negative pressure throughout the building to reduce fugitive odors. Existing landscaping along Foothill Road screens the Proposed Project from public views. Two chillers associated with the HVAC system will be installed adjacent to the proposed building.

Eight boilers will be installed throughout the property as well as five 3,000-gallon water tanks. Ten 3,000-gallon water tanks will also be installed.

The proposed cannabis processing building will add up to 50 new full-time year-round employees in addition to the 30 full-time yearround employees for the existing cannabis cultivation operation, for a maximum of 80 full-time year round employees for the entire cannabis operation on the property. The Proposed Project will add 18 parking spaces, including two ADA spaces, to the existing 36 parking spaces, for a total of 54 parking spaces. The operator will lease at least one 15-passenger van through CalVans (or a similar third party company) to provide daily roundtrip weekday vanpool transportation for employees commuting from Ventura County to the Project site for the life of the Project. All employee parking will be on-site and no employee parking on public roads is allowed.

The hours of operation for the processing building will be 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, seven days a week. Two emergency generators will be installed for backup power in case of an outage. Water for the processing building and all domestic uses on-site will be provided by the Carpinteria Valley Water District. The proposed processing building will contain two restroom areas for the use of employees.

Wastewater treatment will be handled by a new septic system. Primary access to the site will continue to be provided through an existing easement on the neighboring parcel to the west (APN 005-280-015), which connects to Via Real. The property is a 14.66-acre parcel zoned Agricultural I (AG-I-10), shown as Assessor’s Parcel Number 005-280-040, addressed as 3561 Foothill Road in the Toro Canyon Community Plan area, First Supervisorial District.

Growers are taking product to Salinas, Lancaster, Lake County, all over the state… We can’t continue this program forward, receiving pennies on the dollar.”

Supervisor Das Williams, who represents the Carpinteria Valley, said it was “dysfunctional” to be transporting cannabis out of the county for processing “when half the time it’s going to come back here. It seems hypocritical of us to add traffic trips on the road for no discernible reason… We should make this change with alacrity.”

A second reading and final board vote on the ordinance amendments has been set for March 1. Coincidentally, on the same date, the board will consider an appeal of cannabis processing building proposed by Graham Farrar, the owner of Glass House Farms.

‘Backdoor’ expansion?

Critics of the cannabis industry regard the acreage caps as the “third rail” of county cannabis policy, not to be tampered with.

The city of Carpinteria and members of grassroots advocacy groups – WE Watch in the Santa Ynez Valley; Citizens Planning Association in Santa Barbara, Concerned Carpinterians and the Santa Barbara Coalition for Responsible Cannabis – have implored the board not to adopt the amendments, which many residents view as a “backdoor” expansion of the acreage caps and a breach of the public trust.

“The City of Carpinteria wishes to go on record as being strongly opposed to the contemplated change,” Nick Bobroff, principal planner, wrote to the board this month. There is no shortage of processing in the valley, he said. State and county records show that more than 20 processing buildings have recently obtained zoning permits in the Carpinteria Valley or are operating with provisional state licenses.

Bobroff suggested that the board change the cannabis acreage caps for the North County, where only three out of 1,575 acres in the cap have been reserved for processing – and leave the 186-acre cap for the Carpinteria Valley alone.

Glass House project

During the past year, county officials found, many growers dropped their plans for new processing buildings in the race to get their cultivation permits approved before the acreage caps were reached.

The county requires the use of sealed buildings for cannabis processing, and the review of these projects is costly and time-consuming.

“We know from experience that permitting and licensing ‘processing’ in Santa Barbara County is extraordinarily difficult and expensive,” Farrar, a past president of CARP Growers, wrote to the board in support of the ordinance amendments. “Keeping processing in the county is imperative for the health of the local cannabis ecosystem…”

Farrar owns 11 acres of cannabis cultivation at Glass House Farms in Carpinteria Valley; he operates as G & K Farms, with eight greenhouses at 3561 Foothill Road, and as Mission Health Associates, with three greenhouses at 5601 Casitas Pass Road. Farrar is a co-owner of the Mission Health operation.

Carpinteria librarian to transition to SB Eastside Library New librarian, Jody Thomas, will take over in July

BY EVELYN SPENCE As the city of Carpinteria switches to a municipal library in July – separate from the Santa Barbara Public Library System – patrons will also see changes in the library staff. Carpinteria librarian Blanca Ramirez, who is employed by the city of Santa Barbara in the current system, will transfer to Santa Barbara’s Eastside Library in July, as Jody Thomas, Montecito Branch Library’s former supervisor, will become the city of Carpinteria’s librarian at the new Carpinteria Community Library.

The change is bittersweet for Ramirez.

“Establishing a team here at Carpinteria has always been really fun,” she said.

“Even before the pandemic, it’s always been very fun.”

Ramirez, who earned her undergraduate degree at University of California, Riverside, and her library science degree at San Jose State University, has been with the Carpinteria Branch Library since 2018.

During her time at the library, she helped develop the library’s beloved stay and play series, which she called “essential for Carpinteria.”

“We had baby story time before, but (stay and play) is really a community-building story time, built toward caregivers and small children with a very short story time at the end,” she said.

Over the next few months, Ramirez said a primary goal is purchasing more books for the Carpinteria Library.

“I’m excited for the transition, but of course I’ll miss the patrons,” she said, citing favorite spots that she will miss such as Lucky Llama. “I just enjoyed my time here and I was happy to serve the

community of Carpinteria.”

Thomas, who has had family in the area since the 1930s and graduated from Carpinteria High School, is currently working out of Carpinteria City Hall. She will remain there until July 1, when the city of Carpinteria officially takes over the library.

She praised the Friends of the Carpinteria Library, city program manager Olivia Uribe-Mutal and assistant city manager Michael Ramirez for their help in getting the new library system off the ground. She noted she admires the city of Carpinteria for transitioning to its own library system.

“The people in Carpinteria voted to spend some of their tax money on a library for themselves… in this shared space that they value so much,” she said.

“I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Over the next few months, Thomas, staff and other volunteers will re-barcode every one of the library’s 12,000 items to prepare for the transition. The city also will create a new website for the library and print new library cards. The new library space also needs to be renovated, Thomas said, although it is unclear at this time how much work needs to be done.

She noted that unlike the larger Santa Barbara Public Library System, the Carpinteria Community Library – as it will be renamed – will be a part of the Black-Gold Collaborative System.

“We’ll have access to half a million items (through Black-Gold),” in addition to the 12,000 items the library already owns, Thomas explained.

The new library will hire an additional full-time staff member, as well as three part-time library technicians. Thomas also

After the city of Carpinteria transitions to a municipal library, she will transfer over to the Eastside Library in Santa Barbara. hopes to build a larger volunteer program.

Thomas earned her undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara, and received her library science degree online through San Jose State University while working fulltime as a supervisor at the Montecito Library. She has also previously worked at the Santa Barbara Public Library as a programming librarian, helping with adult programming at the Central Library, and at the California State Library.

She likened the California State Library to the “Library of Congress for California.” While there, she developed programs for public, travel and law librarians, and focused on grants for

federal and state libraries.

Once she officially steps into her role on July 1, Thomas said she hopes to hear from Carpinterians about what they want at the library, adding to the “pages of ideas and programs” she already has in mind.

“I have lots and lots of ideas, but I want to hear from people about what they’re interested in,” she explained.

“There are so many possibilities (…) We need to get our feet under us. We won’t get the building until July 1, when we’ll be right in the middle of summer reading for children. Come fall, we’ll roll out a calendar of events.”

“Women Making Change” fills Alcazar Theatre with woman-focused programming

Diverse line-up of programs celebrate women and examine issues women and girls face

Carpinteria is shining a bright spotlight on the women who are bravely and boldly shaping the community, as well as the women who have changed the world.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Alcazar Theatre is hosting a month of programming called “Women Making Change.” Diverse and thought-provoking events include performances by female musicians, artists, comedians and poets, documentaries and films that amplify the accomplishments and legacies of women historically and in the present, and speakers and panelists who will address critical issues affecting women and girls.

“Carpinteria has a long history of strong female leadership. The women making change today are building on the groundbreaking work done by the women who came first in local government, businesses, schools and nonprofits. Our goal with Women Making Change is to celebrate these change-makers and shed light on issues facing women and girls around the world,” said Beth Cox, chair of the Women Making Change Committee.

“We have a phenomenal team leading this effort,” said Kim Gutierrez and Geri Carty of the Alcazar Theatre. “The committee behind Women Making Change is so packed with talent and take-charge that it could be a case study for how women make change. We’re thrilled that the theater can provide the space for this idea to grow into reality.”

On Friday afternoon, community members met downtown for a Women Making Change march to recognize the historical leaders of the women’s suffragist movement.

19 launched the Women Making Change programming, which includes over a dozen events at the Alcazar Theatre. Kicking off March’s full month of programs is a Comedy Night featuring comedienne Cat Alvarado on Saturday, March 5.

Next in the line-up, on Sunday, March 6, is a screening of “Miss Representation” which considers sexism in American society and the media. The film will be discussed by panel members Alitza Gonzales, Elsa Granados, Kara Peterson and Rachael Ross Steidl, with Regina Ruiz, former television journalist and educator, as moderator.

“It is important to recognize that girls and women still face significant challenges,” said Tina Fanucchi-Frontado, Women Making Change committee member. “The right to vote, the #MeToo movement, the growing number of women in leadership

positions around the world, these are huge wins in ensuring and securing space for girls and women to have equal access to their dreams, whether those dreams are to become the mayor of Carpinteria or the president of the United States.”

Programs for Women Making Change continue throughout March with plays, concerts, movies, panels and a self-defense class. Program details can be found thealcazar.org.

Meet Jody Thomas, the city’s new librarian at the helm of the future Carpinteria Community Library The city of Carpinteria has announced that Jody Thomas is the new City Librarian. The new hire is part of the library’s transition from a Santa Barbara County branch library to a city of Carpinteria library. Thomas has been working at a fever pitch behind the scenes to prepare for the library’s summer reopening as a community hub filled with books, magazines, digital resources, computer stations and vibrant programs for young and old.

What educational background and work experience did you bring into your new position?

I came from a family of readers and autodidacts. Everyone in my family was always learning. I put myself through college, thinking I would become a public school teacher, but it wasn’t a good fit for me. Unsure about what to do next, I enrolled in a masters program to become a family therapist. This was some of the most valuable learning I ever did, but I didn’t finish that program because by then, I was the mother of two small children.

I homeschooled our kids until they went to high school, when I started working at the Montecito Library and found my calling. I got my master’s in library and information science (MLIS) through the distance learning program at San Jose State University while working fulltime.

I graduated in 2013.

I developed lots of programs while at Montecito Library, and then later at the Santa Barbara Central Library, I doubled the programs for adults every year I was in that position. Most recently, I worked for the California State Library as a library programs consultant, supporting public libraries all over the state with grants and training.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? Do you have a family?

I was born in California and spent several years of my early life in Nevada, but moved to Carpinteria for high school. My great-grandparents moved to Carpinteria in 1929, and some of my family has lived here ever since. I live in Santa Barbara and am happily married to my husband.

We have two grown daughters who now have families of their own, one of whom lives here in Carpinteria.

What are your primary goals for the Carpinteria Community Library?

The Carpinteria Community Library is in the heart of town, and I would love to have it feel like the heart of town. The public library in a town this size should be a place where everyone feels safe, known and welcome. I want people to feel like it is their place. We will be developing a robust programming schedule, reaching out to people who are not currently using the library, and creating a culture of participation and engagement.

What attracted you to the role of opening and operating a new library?

I loved working at the Montecito Library so much. I found after I had left that small community librarianship was my joy. The chance at creating a library culture is such an unusual opportunity, and to d o it in my hometown is beyond special.

Carpinteria Branch Library will become Carpinteria Community Library this summer. Tell us about the name change.

The public library in Carpinteria has been called a number of things through

what the official name is. My hope is that all library users will regard THE Library as their library.

What are the biggest challenges of opening a new library by this July?

I think the most difficult challenge of opening a new library is that I am not actually at the library. The books need to be re-labeled and new library cards issued, and there are a surprising number of practical things to do such as setting up contracts, establishing services for Carpinteria, making a budget, etc. Doing it from outside the library is a challenge.

If you want to talk to me, I’ll mostly be at City Hall until July 1.

When the library opens, what three adjectives do you hope people will use to describe it?

Welcoming, friendly and busy!

What book are you reading right now?

Do you have an all-time favorite book?

Hmmmm, I always have too many books going. I am reading “Cloud Cuckoo Land” for my book group. I prefer to read non-fiction and am reading “The Premonition: A Pandemic Story” by Michael Lewis. I’ve also started “The Personal Librarian,” which is historical fiction about the African American woman who curated J.P. Morgan’s personal rare book and manuscript library, but who had to “pass” as white to do it. My favorite book of all time is “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks.

Jody Thomas has been hired as the new City Librarian and will be the friendly face that greets library patrons starting in July. Until then, the library will be managed as part of the larger Santa Barbara County Library System. the years: Carpinteria Branch Library (currently on the sign out front and in the historical record), Carpinteria Library (currently the online url and other references) and Carpinteria Public Library. In keeping with other locations in the city, the decision was made to rename the library Carpinteria Community Library, like the Carpinteria Community Pool and the Carpinteria Community Garden. It includes Carpinterians and those in the surrounding communities, too. Anecdotally, I have been told lots of people will refer to it as “THE Library” no matter

Carpinteria High School teacher Julie Shamblin’s Virtual Enterprises class will take a trip to New York City in April to compete in the 2022 Youth Business Summit.

CHS class wins grant to attend NY convention

Carpinteria High School’s Virtual Enterprises program is taking a trip to New York in April to show off their business acumen alongside students from all over the world – with funding to offset expenses provided by an HSBC Bank opportunity grant.

The annual summit brings together aspiring student entrepreneurs to compete against other middle and high school students from around the world. In the Carpinteria High School program, run by Social Science teacher Julie Shamblin, students create their own businesses and show them off at various trade shows and competitions.

“It’s everything from creating a business plan to a market plan, to human resources, to sales, to an elevator pitch,” Shamblin told CVN. Shamblin has taken her class nearly every year to compete at the convention, but this year’s group of seniors was awarded enough money to fully fund trips for eight students and two chaperones. explained the money will be divided so 20 students can go at a decreased cost to each.

While the seniors only found out about the grant last week, Shamblin has known for almost a month, and was excited to let them know they won the funding.

“It was kind of funny, because they were so excited, but they looked to me like, ‘Did this just happen?’” she shared.

“They cheered, but when I had them alone, they were hooting and hollering.”

Across the four-day event, students will compete, but they’ll also get a chance to explore the city and the surrounding areas. Shamblin plans for the students to visit the 9/11 memorial, Coney Island, a Yankees game and other tours – “squeezing in as much into it as we can.”

“I have students who have never been on an airplane or in a hotel before,” she said. “This trip is nothing like they’d ever experience. You do everything alongside your fellow senior friends, and you’re competing (…) everything

Shamblin thanked the Carpinteria community for their help in raising funding for the program over the last 12 years, “whether it’s in raffle tickets or buying candy.”

“We’ve had so many rummages sales,” she joked. “(This grant) really feels like such a big gift. Another group of future Carpinteria leaders are going to be able to see New York City (…) I’m just so thankful.”

Dahlquist, a CHS senior, said it will be her first time visiting the East Coast and staying in Times Square.

“I think everyone just worked really hard to make this happen,” she said.

“I’m really appreciative. This grant has really helped us a lot.”

CHS Principal Gerado Cornejo congratulated the group on winning the grant.

“Carpinteria High School is the only school west of the Mississippi to be given a grant this school year,” Cornejo said.

What is the metaverse? Part II

LET’S TALK TEK M I C H A E L AV E R Y Last month, I started a discussion on what the metaverse is and this week, I’ll be tackling the other side of the coin: what the metaverse is not. There are billions of dollars being invested by all sorts of companies into research and development of the metaverse and it is considered to be the natural evolution of the internet, and yet, there are a still many misconceptions about what it is and isn’t.

The metaverse is not: A virtual world. Virtual worlds and games with AI-driven characters have existed for decades, as have those populated with “real” humans in real-time.

This isn’t a “meta” (Greek for “beyond”) universe, just a synthetic and fictional one designed for a single purpose, such as a game.

A virtual space. Digital content experiences like Second Life are often seen as “proto-Metaverses” because they (A)

lack game-like goals or skill systems; (B) are virtual hangouts that persist; (C) offer nearly synchronous content updates; and (D) have real humans represented by digital avatars. However, these are not sufficient attributes for the Metaverse.

Virtual reality (VR). VR is a way to experience a virtual world or space.

A sense of presence in a digital world doesn’t make a metaverse. It is like saying you have a thriving city because you can see and walk around it.

A digital and virtual economy. These, too, already exist. Individual games

digital items for purely digital activities via purely digital marketplaces.

A game. Fortnite has many elements of the metaverse. It (A) mashes up IP; (B) has a consistent identity that spans multiple closed platforms; (C) is a gateway to a myriad of experiences, some of which are purely social; (D) compensates creators for creating content, etc. However, as is the case with Ready Player One, it remains too narrow in what it does, how far it extends and what “work” can occur (at least for now). While the metaverse may have some game-like goals, include

Additionally, platforms such as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, as well as technologies such as Bitcoin, are based around the hiring of individuals/ businesses/computational power to perform virtual and digital tasks. We are already transacting at scale for purely

games and involve gamification, it is not itself a game, nor is it oriented around specific objectives.

A new app store. No one needs another way to open apps. The metaverse is substantively different from today’s internet/mobile models, architecture and priorities.

A new UGC platform. The metaverse is not just another YouTube or Facebook-like platform in which countless

individuals can create, share and monetize content, and where the most popular content represents only the tiniest share of overall consumption.

The metaverse will be a place in which proper empires are invested in and built, and where these richly capitalized businesses can fully own a customer, control APIs/data and unit economics, etc. It’s likely that, as with the web, a dozen or so platforms hold significant shares of user time, experiences, content and so on.

A simple way to define the metaverse is that it is the future of the internet; a massively scaled, persistent, interactive and interoperable real-time platform comprised of interconnected virtual worlds where people can socialize, work, transact, play and create.

Thin Mints No-Bake Cheesecake

Cookie crust

Preheat the oven to 350. Lightly spray 10” round springform pan with vegetable oil spray.

To make the crust, pulse thin mints in a food processor until fine. Transfer crumbs to a bowl and add sugar, salt and melted butter. Stir until incorporated. Press crust mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the springform pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350, then cool completely.

(I speed it up by placing the baked crust in the freezer or refrigerator.)

I’m so excited to share this month’s recipe with you all! Given this is Women’s History Month, I want to give a shout-out to all the Girl Scouts learning entrepreneurial skills by hustling cookies to raise money for their group activities.

As a former girl scout myself, I did my fair share of selling cookies door to door, and have fond memories of baking and making arts and crafts as a Brownie. I always eagerly looked forward to the evenings on which we had our meetings.

I remember one overnight trip to a lodge in upstate New York where we all slept in sleeping bags in a big open room. I slept with my head at the foot of the sleeping bag so no one could see me sucking my thumb. It was hard to breathe so I spent what would become a very long night periodically coming up for air. Ha! Thin Mints have always been my absolute favorite girl scout cookie, so I knew I had to come up with a delicious chocolate mint dessert. This no-bake cheesecake recipe is so light and airy, and quite frankly mouth-wateringly delicious. You can make this dessert alcohol-free by substituting peppermint oil to taste, and adding a couple drops of green food coloring instead of using crème de menthe. Remember to support your local Girl Scouts and get your cookies while they last!

Fast food staff reported a man was outside, cursing and making lewd comments. He was found to have soiled himself and was too belligerent for the sobering center. He was transported to jail and booked.

A reporting party called to report a catalytic converter theft that occurred sometime the prior night.

1902 hrs / Incident / Concha Loma Drive

Deputies responded to a report of a subject threatening to kill the reporting party. Upon arrival, the reporting party stated he was on his balcony when the suspect threatened to kill him. No weapons were reported, or method given, however, at one point, the suspect climbed onto a vehicle and continued to challenge the reporting party to fight.

When asked, reporting party was willing to sign a citizen’s arrest. The suspect was located at a local motel and arrested.

1948 hrs / Narcotics Violations / 4200 block Via Real

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a vehicle after it was observed illegally parked. During the investigation, the driver was found in possession of a used methamphetamine pipe. The front passenger was found to have an outstanding warrant. The rear passenger was found to be on probation and in possession of a dirk/dagger. Two were arrested and booked. The third was cited and released at the scene.

2257 hrs / DUI / Southbound Hwy 101 and Bailard Avenue

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a vehicle for displaying false registration tabs. During the investigation, the driver displayed signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

0755 hrs / Collision / 4500 block Carpinteria Avenue A collision was documented.

0949 hrs / Incident / Linden Avenue

A reporting party reported a vehicle collision involving a commercial vehicle, which struck a pergola. Upon further investigation, it was believed that the damage to the pergola was caused by a prior collision.

2310 hrs / Drug Violations / Carpinteria Avenue and Santa Ynez Avenue

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a vehicle for displaying false registration tabs. During the investigation, the passenger was found in possession of psilocybin mushrooms. The driver was found in possession of a glass container with cocaine and baggie of methamphetamine. Both were cited and released at the scene and the vehicle was towed.

COASTAL BUREAU OPERATIONS • FEB. 13 – 19 1919 hrs / Incident / 3900 block Via Real

A large, high-pressured gas pipe burst at the rear of 3900 block Via Real, causing an active gas leak into the area. The surrounding properties and residences were evacuated. Additionally, SoCal Gas was delayed due to an active and arching powerline lying across the main driveway at the 3900 block Via Real, preventing the SoCal response personnel from accessing the busted gas pipe. High Winds in Montecito and in the Carpinteria area knocked down numerous trees and powerlines throughout the region. SoCal Edison eventually arrived and cleared the active powerline, allowing SoCal Gas personnel to proceed through and shutoff the cracked gas pipe.

2011 hrs / Incident / 6900 block Gobernador Canyon Road

High winds in the area knocked down several trees and powerlines along the 6900 block of Gobernador Canyon Road.

Several trees and active powerlines blocked the roadway preventing traffic from traveling through. Personnel blocked off the scene and monitored the smoldering brush caused by the arching power lines until SoCal Edison arrived.

The property manager reported that he discovered forced entry through the French Doors. They did a walk through the residence but did not notice any obvious items missing. The homeowner/ renter will return home soon and call if any items were taken.

1427 hrs / Burglary / 1200 block Franciscan Court

The victim reported that someone entered his locked garage and took tools and a PK Ripper Bicycle.

1400 hrs / Extra Patrol Request / 800 block Sand Point Road

A security manager is requesting frequent patrols. He provided deputies with a photo of a male, who he believes is responsible for mail theft reported on Jan. 20.

1728 hrs / DUI / Casitas Pass Road and Via Real

Sheriff’s dispatch broadcasted a be-onlookout for a DUI driver, northbound on Linden Avenue from El Caro. A deputy located the vehicle on Casitas Pass Road at Via Real. A traffic stop was performed, and the driver performed poorly on sobriety field tests. Preliminary alcohol screening results were 0.19% BAC. He was arrested and his breath tests were 0.15% and 0.17% BAC. He was booked and his vehicle was towed.

1933 hrs / Public Intoxication / Amtrak Station

Amtrak reported six intoxicated female passengers on the train they wanted removed due to them causing a disturbance on the train. All the subjects exited the train as directed but one of them was found to be too intoxicated to care for

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a female who said she was being followed by an unknown man who was trying to grab her. Deputies arrived and spoke to the reporting party. Deputies found the man, detained him and interviewed him.

He said that the two had been dating, and were traveling together with his mother; the woman said he was delusional, and that he was a friend of a friend. The woman then corroborated his account.

A domestic violence advocate was contacted and spoke with the woman, after she described a verbal domestic dispute, but she decided to go back with the man.

A reporting party called to report that the clerk at a local convenience store took his $20 bill because she felt it was fake. Deputies contacted the clerk and obtained the bill. The bill was confirmed fake at Montecito Bank and Trust. The report was documented and the bill was booked as evidence.

0657 hrs / Traffic Accident / Southbound Hwy 101

Deputies assisted the California Highway Patrol with a 10-vehicle traffic accident with injuries. Deputies were on scene for several hours assisting with traffic.

1450 hrs / Violation of Stay Away Order / Humphrey Road

The victim reported that she received an email from Lending Tree offering her $10,000 loan for $150. The victim sent the money via Western Union. The suspects kept asking for more money until the victim refused to send anymore. The suspect cussed her out and failed to answer her calls.

The reporting party’s girlfriend called to report that the ex-wife was on the property yelling and causing a disturbance. The reporting party said that he has a stay away order on file. The reporting party admitted to allowing the ex-wife to come get items from the house two days ago. And he allows the ex-wife to drop off the children and pick up the kids at the house. Today the exwife was dropping off her son to pick up his e-bike. Both were advised to follow the stay away order set by the court. The incident was documented.

A subject entered a local store and ran out of the store with three jackets. Two of the jackets totaled about $400, and the store employees were unable to identify the third jacket. The suspect is unknown but photos from in-store surveillance cameras were obtained.

0035 hrs / Public Intoxication / 4700 block Ninth Street

Deputies responded to the above address for a subject who was being forced to stay at the residence. Upon arrival the reporting party exited the home and spoke with deputies outside the residence. She had been drinking alcohol and refused to stay home. She was in a public place and unable to care for her own safety. She was arrested and booked.

1327 hrs / Recovered Stolen Vehicle / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

The reporting party called to report that her grandson reported his vehicle stolen to the Santa Barbara Police Department. The grandson is in rehab and

A deputy observed large flames from the manhole covers located on the right shoulder of the Hwy 101 north and in the center median of the Hwy 101 south.

The fire department responded and due to the smoke and fire, Hwy 101 north was closed for about four hours. Once the fire department said it was safe, Hwy 101 was opened, but a portion of Via Real remained closed to traffic until the drainage area underneath could be evaluated.

At 0142 hours, deputies reported seeing a large amount of smoke from the same area. Fire department responded again and were unable to determine the source of the fire. Deputies assisted.

2120 hrs / Overdose / Vallecito Place

Deputies responded with Ventura County Fire – due to Carpinteria Fire being on the above incident – and AMR on a report of a fentanyl overdose. Upon arrival, deputies located the patient, who was unresponsive in a bedroom. A deputy deployed Narcan and assisted fire with stabilizing the patient. The patient was transported to Cottage Hospital.

The ocean realm

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM At that moment we didn’t think anything of it. Jeremy Carberry and I were launching two kayak tours off the cobbled shore of Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island. It was cloudy and the ocean was silky smooth. Paddling conditions were sublime.

As we made our way north, we were clear of the sheer, 300-foot-tall cliffs that fortify the volcanic islet, and then suddenly the ocean came alive. Typically, dolphins don’t travel near the island.

Instead, they prefer the deeper water where they find massive bait balls of fish.

However, there were a couple hundred common dolphins near the island, swimming fast to the southeast. After they swam by us, a procession of California sea lions followed in the same direction. It could’ve been only one of two scenarios.

They were either traveling quickly for food, or a predator was in the immediate region, and those sea lions and dolphins were fleeing the scene.

Wolves of the sea

Later that day, we learned there was a pod of orca west of where we lead kayak tours at Cavern Point. That pod was seen finishing off a sea lion near Potato Harbor from a whale watching boat. That pod of orca was also responsible for sending that pod of common dolphin and throng of sea lions escaping to the southeast.

That was Dec. 22, 2021, and the Santa Barbara Channel had been teeming with marine mammals. It was a month like no other for orca sightings. Multiple pods were sighted off whale watching vessels like the Condor Express and Island Packers.

The Santa Barbara Channel is one of the best places in the world for spotting whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and seabirds, but witnessing orcas in the channel has always been the most thrilling yet fleeting. There are no resident pods in the channel or around the Channel Islands National Park. Instead, its transient pods that continuously move up and down the offshore waters of the California Coast feasting on marine mammals wherever they may find them.

Transient pods also follow the annual gray whale migration. Southbound whales traveling from the Chukchi Sea in Alaska eventually pass on either side of the Channel Islands National Park, before heading to the warmwater lagoons in Baja, Mexico. There, the females give birth to their calves before migrating back north to the Chukchi Sea in the spring.

Mistaken identity

I’ll never forget Dec. 12, 2021. As I boarded the Island Packer boat following five days of guided kayak trips around Scorpion Anchorage, my girlfriend Holly Lohuis was the naturalist on the Island Packer boat. She whispered to me that a pod of orca had been seen a few hours ago feeding on an unlucky common dolphin.

I immediately took a spot on the upper deck of the ferry and began scouring the channel for any movement. Traveling east/northeast we headed into the middle of the Santa Barbara Channel. Captain

Luke and Holly then spotted a pod of orca, but not the pod earlier feeding on that unfortunate dolphin.

Everyone on the boat was standing, anticipating what might happen. Then something pink, something fleshy rose out of the water. I, like so many others, thought it was a leftover marine mammal carcass from a recent kill.

Again, the pink showed itself in the dark, cobalt blue waters between two orcas. Then a knock on the window from Captain Luke. He mouthed to me through the glass that they were mating, something that is rarely observed. Most mating occurs under water.

Another pod was also nearby, their plumes from their spouts wafted just above the east channel. Something stood out within that pod like no other. It was an all-white orca, a three-year-old male known affectionately as “Frosty.”

Frosty is not an albino. He does not have a pink eye associated with albinism.

Instead, this orca has leucism, where the skin’s natural pigment is absent.

Frosty stayed very close to its mother, sidling up on her left flank as their pod headed eastward. Frosty has been sighted mostly between Santa Barbara and San Diego counties. For as long as he lives, he will always have the advantage of the strength of his pod, as sons tend to stay close to their mothers throughout their lives.

From the upper deck of the Island Packers boat, it was a lot to take in – nature delivering a bunch of firsts out on the Santa Barbara Channel. Now all I need is a pod of orcas around my kayak in the middle of the channel.

Harbor seals can track swimming fish in dark water, homing on wakes as much as 30 seconds after a fish has passed by. Extremely sensitive whiskers – vibrissae – vibrate over and under swirling water in a fashion that minimizes the random fluttering a simple round “antenna-like” structure would give. The key is their shape: seal whiskers aren’t round, but oval with a wavy pattern that cuts through the water. This reduces movement caused by the seal itself, and coupled with about 1,500 whisker nerve endings, enables the seal to detect the size, speed and direction of potential targets. Engineers are studying ways to use the seal’s natural capability in manufactured oceanic sensors.

Hot dogs and milkshakes on the beach

Built in 1922 by Thomas Fish, the Beach Store at the base of Linden Avenue served campers and locals until the early 1960s.

Originally, the small store was owned by Thomas and his sisters, who operated the Carpinteria Beach Auto Camp, the precursor to Carpinteria State Beach. In the November/December 2010 edition of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society newsletter, locals reminisced about their experiences with the Beach Store, which sold candy, hot food, ice cream and beach supplies, while also offering a jukebox and pinball machines. Lew Goodfield, who worked at the store, said, “I remember making hotdogs and milkshakes and selling candy, back in 1952-53.” JoAnne Goena remembered clutching her few coins and entering the cool, dark store.

“I was dripping with water and covered with sand, and no one scolded me or told me to wipe my feet.”

an old packing house (his is on Casitas Pass Road), virtually a shed that was built decades ago for the cut flower industry.

But it’s not big enough, Farrar said; he has to truck up to 30% of his crop to a cannabis manufacturing facility that he owns in the city of Lompoc, an hour’s drive away.

Now, Farrar is proposing to build a state-of-the-art 25,000 square-foot processing building at 3561 Foothill that can handle all of his cannabis. The project will be at the board on March 1 on appeal from the county Planning Commission’s approval last year.

Farrar said that members of CARP Growers support the cannabis ordinance amendments because their processing is “shoehorned” into old packing houses and they need more space. Farrar said he did not expect to increase his acreage under cultivation if his processing building is removed from the cap; the greenhouses on his properties are maxed out and he does not intend to build new ones.

“We don’t have empty space that would be used for cultivation,” he said.

Concerns over skunky smell

County records show that Farrar ’s properties at 5601 Casitas Pass and 3561 Foothill are first and second for the most cannabis odor complaints filed by residents of the valley since 2015, with 285 and 252 complaints, respectively. Last

year, 100 members of Concerned Carpinterians signed a petition against Farrar’s processing project.

Farrar is proposing an airtight “building-within-a-building” for processing, equipped with an outdoor vapor-neutralizing system and 19 indoor carbon filters to “scrub” out the smell of cannabis.

“We’ll get out of a pack house and into a custom-designed processing facility,” Farrar said. “It’s better for us, better for odor and better for the county.”

Sarah Trigueiro, a resident of La Mirada Drive above Foothill, is not convinced.

She filed the appeal to the board, asking the county to address the foul smell of cannabis at Farrar’s greenhouses before allowing any expansion of his operations.

The smell of pot, borne uphill into her neighborhood on the prevailing winds, has caused her to suffer “regular nausea and headaches,” Trigueiro said.

“This is a situation where waiting for an operator to prove over time that they can be a good neighbor and not cause significant air quality and odor impacts seems a prudent approach, before greenlighting expanded and more resident-impacting operations,” she said.

Warriors softball wins home opener against Santa Barbara

As March approaches, the seasons change, and it’s time for a new wave of Warriors athletics. Carpinteria High School softball kicked off its year at home with a victory over Santa Barbara.

Amarisse Camargo wasted no time switching from the basketball court to the diamond, and she drove in six runs on three hits to lead the Warriors to a 7-4 win over the Dons.

Camargo’s first at-bat got the scoring started for the team, and resulted in a single that drove in two runs for the Warriors. In the second inning, she followed up with another single. In the fourth inning, Camargo served the highlight of the game when she hammered a home run shot.

Camargo wasn’t the only multiplesport athlete for the Warriors; senior righthander Madison Mora made the switch from water polo goalie to starting pitcher for Carpinteria, facing off against Vienna Mochi from Santa Barbara. Mora came out on top, allowing six hits and four runs, while also striking out ten batters in the win.

The dual-sport senior also showed up on offense, with a big RBI double in the Warriors’ three-run second inning.

If the first home game is any indication, the Carpinteria softball team promises to

be a force on offense this year. The team notched 11 hits on the day, with three different Warriors getting multiple hits.

Camargo, Mora and Alexiana Jaimes all finished with three-hits each in the victory. The team also drove in seven earned runs with only five strikeouts.

The Dons also fought back to stay in the game and drove in four runs.

Santa Barbara had three batters rack up multiple hits; Ava Karman, Alina Magdalano and Bella Corral all reached base more than once.

Carpinteria is now 1-1 overall, and

the Warriors is hosting an invitational tournament at home this Saturday, Feb. 26. Coach Dakotah Wilcox said it is a big event for the Warriors, and invited all in the Carpinteria community to come out and support. First game begins at 8 a.m. at Carpinteria High School.

After the tournament, the Warriors hit the road for a non-league match against Santa Clara on March 5, then back home for another non-league game against Bishop Diego on March 8. The Warriors start league play March 10 on the road at Santa Paula.

Carpinteria boys tennis struggles in first match

Warriors boys tennis hosted their home opener against Dos Pueblos, but the team had a tough time keeping up with the strong Charger squad, and Carpinteria dropped the match 14-4.

Though the team was ultimately outmatched, coach Charles Bryant said he was encouraged by what he saw on the first day of competitive action. “I thought we adjusted well throughout the sets, although most did not go our way,’’ Bryant said.

One bright spot was Austin Stone, who swept his three sets in singles while his younger brother Max went 1-2 with two close losses.

The Warriors struggled in doubles, and were swept in each set. “We were just a bit shell-shocked by the Chargers’ pace on their serves and groundstrokes,” Bryant said, “but it was definitely a good learning lesson.”

Carpinteria is now 0-1 on the season, and faces Channel Islands, St. Bonaventure and Foothill Tech this week.

Cate loses heartbreaker in overtime of playoffs

After a hot streak of 14 games in a row, the Cate Rams boys basketball team fell in a 47-48 overtime heartbreaker at Western of Anaheim in the second round of the CIF Division 4A Playoffs.

“The most difficult part of every season is that it has to come to an end, unfortunately for us we feel as if our season is ending a week and a half too early,” coach Andy Gil said. “This is one of the most talented and balanced and hardest working teams I have had here at Cate and it stings extra tonight because we gave it our all and came up just a little shy.”

The team started out sputtering, losing their first three games, but since then the Rams were unstoppable. Led by Babacar Pouye, Mason Oetgen and Ethan Ligon, the team had racked up win after win heading into the second-round matchup.

Coach Gil said they faced one of the loudest and most hostile environments he had ever been a part of at Western, and the opposing team and coaches did a great job of keeping the crowd involved.

The game was a physical, hard-fought battle, with both teams back-and-forth down to the wire. Cate recovered from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a three-pointer from Oetgen with 10 seconds remaining. A controversial foul call put Western in the position to win with a free throw, but a miss sent the game into overtime.

In OT, Cate scored first but missed too many shots to keep up, and ultimately lost 47-48. Junior Jengus Ercil led the team with 17, followed by Pouye with 13. Seniors Oetgen and Ligon finished their last game as Rams with 9 and 5 points, respectively.

Cate boys soccer drops in third round of CIF playoffs

Cate hosted a second-round matchup against Coachella Valley in the boys soccer CIF Division 6 playoffs, and earned a trip to the next round with a 1-0 win.

After heading into halftime tied with Coachella Valley, the Rams scored the game’s only goal in the 73rd off a corner kick from senior Daniel Boateng. The corner connected to freshman Samuel Anum, who found senior Peter Wood, who then deflected it to sophomore Seb Sutch for the goal.

With the win, the Rams earned a trip to Lancaster to face Little Rock in the third round. Cate couldn’t ride the momentum from the first two rounds and lost 1-3. They finished the season 11-3 overall, and 5-2 in league play.

Carpinteria U14 advances to AYSO championships

The Carpinteria 14-and under girls soccer team advanced to the AYSO Western States Championships with a win over Santa Barbara. Carpinteria represented their region by competing against other top performing teams from San Fernando Valley to Yosemite Valley in a competition this past weekend in Bakersfield.

Carpinteria met Santa Barbara in the final, with both teams undefeated and winning their pools. However, Carpinteria advanced to the AYSO Western States Championships with a 3-0 win over Santa Barbara in the Section 10 Championship Final on Sunday.

Evelyn Lara, Charlotte Cooney and Logan Labistour each scored a goal. Consistent pressure from the midfielders earned Lara the first goal seven minutes in the opening half giving Carpinteria the early lead. Eleven minutes into the second half, Cooney extended that lead to 2-0, and a late goal in the game’s closing minutes gave Carpinteria a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament – all shutouts.

“This outcome was truly a team effort,” said Carpinteria Head Coach Jon-Ryan Schlobohm. “Throughout the weekend, they played unselfishly, and many of our players contributed with goals. Carpinteria did not give up a goal which is a true testament to our team’s performance. I was proud of our girls!”

In March, Carpinteria will represent California’s central coast and compete against Los Angeles and San Diego Counties, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada in Morgan Hill.
