Carpinteria air deemed “Very Unhealthy” Santa Barbara County Air Pollution District Public Information Officer Lyz Hoffman said Wednesday at 1 p.m. that a temporary particulate matter measuring device had been installed in Carpinteria to monitor air quality during the Thomas Fire. According to data received from the monitoring device, Carpinteria is experiencing “Very Unhealthy” air conditions—the second-most dangerous level, just below “Hazardous.”

Updates on particulate-matter rankings, smoke maps and forecasts are available at ourair.org, under “Today’s Air Quality” in the menu-bar option “Air Quality.”

smaller than 2.5 microns, which is much thinner than a human hair. “Tiny particles can wedge in the deepest parts of our lungs—they’re not good for hearts or lungs,” Hoffman stressed.

While healthy adults will likely recover quickly when clean air conditions return, children and seniors and anyone with heart or lung problems are particularly vulnerable to the high particulate matter levels that we have been experiencing for more than a week. “Stay indoors as much as possible,” Hoffman recommended.

The website californiasmokeinfo. blogspot.com—which aggregates smoke and particulate data from multiple government agencies—states, “A break in the large-scale offshore wind pattern is expected late Friday (Dec. 15) afternoon with dramatic improvement in smoke impacts across the region.”

The N-95 masks that have been issued offer limited protection, Hoffman said, and are only meant to be worn briefly if a person has to go outside. Additionally, the masks are only effective if they are properly fitted and worn as designed.

Inside air is a concern as well, and residents should consider purchasing an air filter with a HEPA filter—even if they have to be ordered online. The best protection from unhealthy air of course is to leave: “Especially in Carpinteria,” Hoffman said, “people should consider leaving the area if possible.”

The County Air Pollution District recommends that people do not begin cleaning up ash at this time, and the district will issue clean up instructions soon. Under no circumstances should leaf blowers be used to clean up ash.

Thomas Fire terrorizes Carpinteria Blaze skirts city after burning the backyard

By Lea Boyd After walls of flames besieged Carpinteria Valley for nearly a week, the little community appears to have survived the prolonged attack with minimal losses.

The Thomas Fire has devoured nearly 240,000 acres over its 10-day march from Santa Paula, to Ojai, to Ventura, to Carpinteria, to Montecito and Santa Barbara, and fire officials say that unless weather conditions change significantly, the worst should be over.

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District Fire Chief Ray Navarro said on Wednesday, Dec. 14, “We’re not completely out of danger now, but we’re looking better today.”

Mandatory evacuation orders for homes north of Highway 192 were still in effect when Coastal View News went to print, but Navarro said he expected those to be downgraded to voluntary by Thursday morning.

Low winds over the last few days have allowed fire crews to protect populated areas and steer the fire into the backcountry. While it surrounded Carpinteria, it consumed portions of Rincon Mountain, Chismahoo, and Rincon Canyon, along with the foothills of Carpinteria and up into Toro Canyon.

Though most media reports state that only one structure has been lost in Santa Barbara County, real numbers are higher. Navarro said that 18 buildings were lost—12 on Gobernador Canyon and Stanley Park roads, five above Santa Monica Road and one on Toro Canyon.

In addition to that, homes were lost on

Rincon Mountain, Chismahoo and all along Highway 150.

Before the fire entered Santa Barbara County, fire crews had a couple windless days to prepare. Fire crews worked to strengthen existing fire lines and cut new lines with bulldozers. Carpinteria received 50 engines—half to hold wilderness fire lines, and half to defend structures.

Reflecting on the fire, Navarro said he felt the risk to Carpinteria most acutely in the early days. He’d watched the fire sprint 9 miles in 12 hours the first night under howling Santa Ana winds, and he knew that if it entered Santa Barbara County just east of the City of Carpinteria, it could burn everything north of Highway 101.

“We had to hold Shepard Mesa,” said Navarro. And they did. Navarro can’t account for why Shepard Mesa was repopulated hours before the fire burned up its slopes. He’d recommended the mandatory evacuation stay in place, but the orders from incident command changed to a voluntary evacuation on the afternoon of Dec. 9.

Nonetheless, over 50 firefighters, aided by helicopters, held off the flames on Shepard Mesa, and crews along Gobernador defended homes and the road. “The plan worked,” Navarro said.

Next the fire moved west, threatening to burn down to Highway 192. But after the winds of Sunday morning, the air calmed again, and the fire crept slowly down the slopes toward Carpinteria for three days, affording firefighters the opportunity to strategically “back burn,”

“That’s exactly what we wanted to see,” Navarro said. The still air and slow creep of the fire made it “almost like a controlled burn.”

On Monday afternoon, the smoky air cleared enough for tanker planes holding 3,000 gallons of fire retardant to swoop into Carpinteria. Simultaneously, helicopters made loops, dropping water on the fire line.

Northeast winds are expected to pick up on the night of Dec. 13, after CVN goes to print, and Navarro said they could renew the threat to Carpinteria, as well as Montecito and Santa Barbara. “If you

have wind behind it, it’s going to come in pretty quick,” he said.

Nonetheless, the fire chief voiced optimism. “We are looking like we’re in pretty good shape,” he said.

What’s next?

The Thomas Fire may have spared most of Carpinteria, but it left a massive mess and created new potential hazards.

In the short term, the community must grapple with the layer of ash coating everything. City Manager Dave Durflinger said, “The number one rule is do not use a blower.” Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Services advises residents to avoid ash contact with skin because it can contain toxic elements. Use of water and wet clothes to wipe down impacted areas is advised, while sweeping ash should be avoided.

The City of Carpinteria is making plans to clean up local sidewalks and streets for public health purposes. Street sweeping and hoses will likely be used to clean public areas, and Durflinger said, “We will do that as soon as possible.”

Hillsides stripped of vegetation are now a grave concern in Carpinteria as the rainy season begins. Durflinger said he hopes to secure grant funding for the denuded hillsides to be hydromulched, a planting process that uses a slurry of seed and mulch to control erosion.

“Worse than war” For backcountry ranches, the Thomas Fire played for keeps

It’s a story of strategic retreats and valiant stand-offs, local knowledge and the efforts of fire crews from all over the West.

On Saturday night, Dec. 9, and through until dawn on Sunday, Dec. 10, the scenario that citizens in Carpinteria had been fearing—the Thomas Fire jumping from Casitas Pass into the backcountry of the Los Padres National Forest behind town—played out, sending a roaring wall of flames onto a series of ranches that dot ridges and canyons to the west of Highway 150.

“I got a call from Ryan Moore at 11:30 Saturday night,” Jean-Claude Rivalland related, “telling me ‘Get up, get outside.’”

Moore, who owns the Lucky Llama coffee shop, was with his father, Matt Moore, surfboard shaper and owner of Rincon Designs, at the property Matt owns near the ranch where Rivalland lives—the historic property of his partner, artist John Wullbrandt.

Within 30 minutes, Rivalland said the fire had crested the ridge and descended upon the property. “The wind was howling,” Rivalland said, “the noise of the fire was like a train—there were fire tornadoes, and the insides of the tornadoes were blue.” Although Wullbrandt and Rivalland stayed to fight the fire against the recommendations of a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputy who called, the two men had a well-prepared and rehearsed plan in place.

Mac Brown, of Mac Brown Excavating, who with his sons and employees has been providing support and refueling services for fire fighters’ equipment, had previously installed a 4-inch firefighting hose on Wullbrandt’s property. And with three, 5,000-gallon tanks recently filled to capacity in anticipation of possibly having to face the fire on their own, Wullbrandt and Rivalland were as prepared as they could have been. Wullbrandt had cleared brush in recent days from the water tanks and generator and around the property as well. Still, Rivalland noted, the fire was “way worse than I anticipated.”

Comparing the fire to combat experiences he’d had in Angola in his youth, Rivalland said that although the war was horrible with bombs going off around him, the Thomas Fire “was way worse.”

With the flames upon them, Rivalland manned three garden hoses, wetting down the horse, two donkeys, two cows and mule he’d brought to a tie rack near the house. Wullbrandt took the fire hose and doused the house, the two men calling out to each other through the dark and the smoke as they knocked down embers and flames as they approached. The men’s two cats and four dogs sheltered in the house, with their prized African spurred tortoise having been placed in the bathtub. Wullbrandt and Rivalland faced “a massive wall of fire,” Rivalland related. “The heat was so intense. The barn collapsed on itself.”

In the end, they saved the house, but Wullbrandt’s entire portfolio—a lifetime of paintings from Hawaii and the Pacific, and, of course, his beloved California backcountry—were lost when his studio and a shipping container were consumed by flames.

“You have to accept it on sight,” Rivalland said of their losses and of the mental stance he and Wullbrandt have taken since the fire came to them. “It’s

OK,” he said, “you’re alive.” And then, as if trying to understand what he’d been through, Rivalland asked, “How did we do this? Just the two of us? Talk about gratitude…”

Wullbrandt said, “We both know that had we left, even the house would be ashes. But having experienced (the fire) now, I would not recommend that others follow our example.” Indicating his longstanding ties to the community,

Wanting to protect their property on the east end of Carpinteria Valley, Matt and Ryan went up late in the afternoon, anticipating they might not be allowed to return later. Even then, before the fire made its dramatic run, it was clear to

Wullbrandt said, “I was in Cub Scouts with Mac Brown, and Betty Brown was one of our Den Mothers. The Boy Scout motto is ‘Be prepared.’” And taking the long view, Rivalland said, “This fire is going to bring this mountain together like nothing before—we’ll move foreward.”

Fast-moving fire consumes Moore property

On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 9, Matt and Ryan Moore went up to the property near Wullbrandt’s that Matt has owned for 30 years to assess the fire situation. Over the previous days, the fire had come to the backside of Rincon Mountain, and Ryan, along with friends he’d grown

In addition to helping friends on Rincon Mountain earlier in the week, Ryan and Mac Brown’s sons, Will Brown

and his brother Mike Isaac, had been helping out-of-state fire crews navigate the complex web of ranch and Forest Service roads that crisscross the backcountry.

When the wind came up from the east on Saturday night, Ryan noted that the fire intensified and that there was “a lot of fuel” available. Estimating flames reaching 300 feet into the air, Ryan said that the fire was upon them within half-an-hour.

“We took off, knowing it was over.”

Ryan described two firefighting dozers—enormous machines, with deployable fire shields and air systems to protect operators in the cabs—as being overrun by flames on the ridge. Fire crews had pulled back to previously burned areas behind the advancing line. Having already called up to the Wullbrandt property to warn John and Rivalland, the Moores made a timely and safe retreat, the fire advancing behind them all the while.

“We’ve been up there 30 years,” Ryan said, “we’ve got a lot of sweat into it. That fire chased us from La Granada Mountain to Mac Brown’s Wiggy Ranch.” Although Matt Moore lost the cabin he’d built with irreplaceable timbers purchased from Our Lady of Guadalupe church when it was renovated, Ryan noted of the property, “The view is still there, the vibe is still there—it’s a special place for us.”

Loss and redemption in the Thomas fire

Amid the losses from the Thomas Fire, we are thankful people are safe. Local firefighters and their colleagues from other communities have put themselves at risk, but we know others have also taken risks for family and friends. We are grateful for their efforts! This calamity provides an opportunity to recalibrate our perspectives on life and property.

It’s been surreal to see fire descending toward our city with homes brightly decorated for Christmas, yet some Christmas themes correspond with this experience.

According to the Bible, because of love and concern, God risked sending the Son (John 3:16) to save “the world” (kosmos in original Greek). That universal love and concern became specific in the miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. Most are familiar with the middle of the story: Jesus’ mission to bring the universal love of God to particular people, including “laying down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

I have witnessed echoes of the Christmas story in our community these last 10 days—the true, profound themes of

Christmas. Love and concern for the world, first for people, then for a home (the world). As the fire is extinguished and the Christmas lights in Carpinteria lose that dreadful backdrop, hopefully we will apply lessons learned through fire.

The grown-up Christ child also used the image of fire to teach a better perspective, and I encourage folks to open their Bibles and consider Matthew 6:25-34.

Finally, a big thank you to all who’ve helped our City in this time of need! And may we all recognize Christmas as a key part of the story of God coming to earth in our time of need. “Joy to the world! Let every heart prepare him room...he comes to make his blessings flow!”

treasure. Continuing through my day, I delivered my grandson to preschool, went to Pilates, stopped by pottery to finish glazing some Christmas presents, went to the grocery store and eventually arrived back home to make dinner.

It was only after bedtime that my day fell apart. Remembering I had to pick up the cats’ food bowl before the skunk could find it, I went out on the back patio and wondered why the hills were glowing red at 11:30 at night. Then I saw the flames. I couldn’t convince myself that what I was seeing was real so I did the smart thing and went to bed. About three hours later, someone was gently shaking me and calling my name. I responded rudely, not wanting to leave my deep sleep. My daughter-in-law kept talking.

The flames were worse and getting closer.

She wanted us to get ready to evacuate.

I was not convinced. How could my home even think about burning down?

Didn’t it know I had things to do? Christmas was coming. We had school events to attend, presents to make and wrap, books to read, songs to sing—and a Christmas tree to string with lights and decorate. I did not want to load boxes with important documents. I did not want to fill a suitcase and dig out our ancient family pictures, and I certainly did not want to select and wrap up all the necessities I couldn’t live without.

It took me literally hours to pack up (partially due to a lack of electricity), deal with the cats, lock up and close all doors and windows. My grandsons had been evacuated with their parents to Carpinteria. My husband, son and friend had been moving cars and valuables to the coast.

Now it was my turn to get on the road.

Why was it so hard? The people I loved were safe. It was only a house. Things could be replaced. Yet if I left, was I deserting my home? Was I admitting defeat.

Was I going to have a huge mess to clean up? Had I paid the house insurance?

I got in my car loaded with our “important” stuff and pulled out onto Highway 150. Traffic flowed somewhat normally for a few miles then slowed to five miles per hour. Twenty minutes later I passed three cars driven by geniuses that had gotten into a fender bender and were

pulled off to the side of the road. After that the driving pace increased, but it was hard to focus. Looking out over Lake Casitas, the sun blazed blood-red orange, the sky radiated heat while belching smoke, and I imagined I was driving into the bowels of hell. This was not the activity I had planned for today.

Once in Carpinteria, we had to find a place to stay for one night—or so we thought. Six days later, wearing masks, we went back home to clean up ash, clean out the fridge as we were unsure how long our power had been out, restock the fridge and cry as we looked at the condition of the pool. Christmas cards, decorating a tree, lights, presents—all fell to the bottom of my to-do list. I was numb from being a refugee for days, continually worrying about whether or not our house was burning, worrying about friends whose houses had burned, and watching a fickle fire grow as it ate its way across the hills of Carpinteria and unsatisfied, continued its destructive binge on to Santa Barbara.

There was no joy in the idea of the upcoming holidays. To be honest, I felt a bit dead inside, as if nature had stolen something from me.

Then I hit myself aside my head and looked around. My grandsons were coming home tomorrow safe and sound—to a house that was still standing. My family was out of harm’s way. We had been welcomed into our friend’s home to stay as long as we needed—a generosity I will never forget. Firefighters had put their own lives in danger to save my home— pathetic pool and all. And my email was full of concern and good wishes and prayers and offers to help sent by friends.

Christmas this year will be different from the one I had envisioned when we first brought our tree home, but it is coming nonetheless, and I have decorations to get out and cookies to make and grandsons to read to, and lots of people to hug.

Stampede of volunteers materializes at Polo Club to rescue livestock

BY PETER DUGRÉ When sudden and ferocious flames swept over the hills of Santa Paula and into the valleys on their first run to Ventura on Dec. 3, much of the rural areas impacted contained remote ranches and their resident horses and livestock. Then the fires ripped north and westward toward Island View Ranch, a horse ranch in La Conchita, and in yet another devastating and unpredictable wave, flames consumed Casitas Pass Road and Rincon Mountain—all areas that likely house as many animals as people.

While the cumbersome endeavor of evacuating large animals is a foreign concept to most city-dwellers terrorized by the prospect of losing homes, those in the equine and ranching communities banded together in remarkable fashion to rescue hundreds of horses, goats, hogs, cows, alpacas and llamas from firestricken zones that often lie far away from roads easily accessible by firefighters.

“We said, ‘We’ve got space. We’ll sort it out later,’” said Shannon McGraw, who was instrumental in converting the Santa Barbara Polo Fields into an animal evacuation center overnight. Polo season has ended for the year, so the facilities, with a capacity for 350 horses, were mostly vacant on Dec. 3.

McGraw, a horse person and polo enthusiast, and Jeff and Naima Sheraga, directors of the Polo Academy, hitched a large stock trailer to a truck and headed toward Santa Paula. “It’s not what we usually do, but it was the right thing to do,” said McGraw, who is an ex-Marine with training and experience in emergency situations and natural disasters, mainly in Central America and the Caribbean.

The situation was so dire that they ended up stumbling upon distressed ranchers and saying, “Can we just take your horses out?”

Although McGraw holds no official capacity at the Polo Club, she became the de facto emergency coordinator, or she might joke, the woman with the red duct tape. The growing volunteer animal rescue operation began to rely on marking stalls with horses’ names and owners’ information with sharpie written on red duct tape.

By Tuesday, they had taken in 80 horses, 42 of which came from the newly threatened La Conchita ranch.

Goodfield roamed Santa Paula first, filling his trailer with animals, and then Ojai, and then La Conchita, and then Rincon Mountain, and eventually he hauled his own 30 head away from harm. Los Padres Outfitters rescued 30 animals on the first night and then 40 more from Ojai.

“I was getting calls from people I knew, who needed help, and then there were random people we ran into with horses at the side of the road,” Goodfield said. They caught a few loose horses near Wheeler Canyon in upper Ojai.

At the most populated point on Wednesday, the Polo Club had 260 animals, including 42 alpacas from a Carpinteria Ranch. Although the Polo Club has the capacity for 350 animals it

doesn’t have the equipment to care for them, as polo teams bring almost everything they need to care for the dozens of ponies they use to compete.

McGraw said she was astonished by the quick and decisive volunteer response. Veterinarian Dr. Steven Goss led an effort to take the temperatures and check the vital signs of each animal twice per day. Members of the UCSB Polo Club began a social media push for supplies and started a GoFundMe page. Within hours, someone had donated 100 buckets, and then came the rakes and truckloads of hay from Good Samaritans.

The Napa Valley Equine Association, not long after suffering its own devastating Santa Rosa fire, sent two large trailers of supplies some 500 miles.

“The horse community, across all disciplines—it can be rodeo, or dressage, or backyard horse owners—is so tight. We take care of each other,” McGraw said.

Caterers at the Polo Club cruised around in golf carts handing out mac and cheese and refreshments, a makeshift community of hundreds of animals and volunteers rose out of the disaster.

Despite having expertly executed such

a heroic evacuation effort, as the days wore on and the animals were settled and cared for, the growing fire necessitated yet another evacuation. It became unsafe for the animals at the Polo Club, and at around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, they commenced a new evacuation to the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Goodfield again loaded his trailer, along with Polo Club personnel and other volunteers. Some animals were able to return home, having had evacuation orders lifted. Still many horses and cattle were without a place to go.

“It was very orderly,” McGraw said.

“There was never a time where we were waiting to load a trailer or for a new trailer to arrive.”

weathered months without tourist dollars, and they’re hungry for that injection of funds that Christmas should guarantee.

Instead, while the coffers should be filling, they’re draining.

Many shops and restaurants have closed for days, others report double-digit sale days that would be triple-digit any other year.

We’ll use the cliché: small businesses are Carpinteria’s lifeblood.

None of us wants to lose them, but the only way to protect them is to spend.

So turn off the computer and put off your shopping until the air is a bit better and the doors are back open. Then go down and spend what you have with the people who support your business, who wave to you in the grocery store, who keep Carpinteria from the slippery slope of becoming any-town USA. Why are La Conchita and Shepard Mesa still standing?

The Thomas Fire could’ve burned Shepard Mesa and La Conchita to the ground. Fanned by Santa Ana winds, towering flames bore down on the local enclaves on separate nights, charring surrounding landscape, sending hot embers over fire lines and burning within a few feet of hundreds of homes.

Locals and fire crews save seaside hamlet

La Conchita faced a wall of fire moving down the slope west of town just after midnight on Dec. 7. The crackling front then turned east, consuming dry brush as it advanced on the cluster of about 150 homes hemmed in by the hillside and railroad tracks.

Most of the town had evacuated in the two days leading up to the fire’s arrival, but a handful of holdouts remained. According to Mike Bell, La Conchita’s unofficial mayor, six to eight local men fought off spot fires as flying embers found fuel within the town. A plum tree, a wooden fence and an abandoned building all flared up before the garden hose-wielding volunteers extinguished them.

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection Battalion Chief Mike Gallagher, who was patrolling the area around highways 150 and 101 that night, saw the fire bearing down on La Conchita. “It just marched straight down the hill toward the homes,” he said. “It was clear it was going to bump the town of La Conchita.”

Gallagher told the fire supervisor that he had a team of 17 firefighters available to assist. Given the go-ahead, the team entered the town with its five engine companies from departments all over the state. The firefighters joined other teams stationed along the backside of homes, where they waited until the flames came within reach before blasting their hoses.

In total, about 50 to 60 firefighters arranged themselves around the periphery of town to battle the blaze.

This structural defense strategy has saves hundreds of homes within Thomas’ reach. As Gallagher described it, “You wait for the fire to come to you, then you hit it with everything you’ve got.” After the high-powered hoses knock down the flames at one house, firefighters move along the line to the next one in what Gallagher called a “bump and run.”

“It’s an inherently risky activity,” Gallagher said. “There are 1,000 ways to get

Saving the town of La Conchita meant keeping every home from burning, since the houses there are constructed close together on narrow lots, and if one of them ignites the others around it are also likely to burn. Fire crews attacked the burning abandoned building and kept the fire from spreading.

Meanwhile, a second fire front moving west from the Ventura side arrived at the horse ranch just east of La Conchita.

Firefighters put it out without losing any of the outbuildings associated with the ranch.

Bell said that by 4 a.m., pockets of flame and smoldering vegetation could be seen on the charred hillsides around the town, but fire crews had won the battle.

“We’re doing well. We love it here,” Bell said a few days later. The little community lost lives and homes to landslides twice, but its population is fiercely loyal and resilient.

Following the fire, La Conchita lost power for two days, but most residents

have returned and must now consider the next threat—a denuded hillside, a history of devastating landslides and an impending rainy season. Bell said he expects Ventura County to re-vegetate the slope through hydromulching, but “if we get heavy rains this year, it’ll be a problem for us.”

Shepard Mesa nearly goes up in smoke

The mandatory evacuation order for the Shepard Mesa neighborhood was lifted on Saturday, Dec. 9, and many residents had driven back up the hill, unloaded their vehicles and tucked in for the night when the Thomas Fire turned on them.

The neighborhood, which consists of dozens of homes along a single road leading up the slope and around the crown of the hill, presents a firefighting nightmare.

There’s one road in and out, and the loop at the top is a single lane in one direction.

The steep slopes on all sides draw fire and are difficult to defend. Fire officials had evacuated the area early, knowing the complications that can arise when fire

engines must move in at the same time as residents are getting out.

But the Thomas Fire still surprised everyone that night when winds picked up and the blaze crossed the line that had been held for days. “I never thought it would cross the 150. I never thought it would do what it did that night,” said Battalion Chief Mike Gallagher of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.

Gallagher called the 50 firefighters working Shepard Mesa that night “heroes” for keeping the fire from igniting the hilltop. No structure was lost, even though the fire roared nearby, burning homes on Stanley Park Road at the intersection of Highway 150 and Gobernador Canyon Road.

As the fire marched south, embers flew up into Shepard Mesa, igniting spot fires throughout the neighborhood.

Gallagher said firefighters battled these flare-ups while fending off the fire from the north. “We had to hold the road,” he said. “If we’d lost one home, we probably would’ve lost the whole thing.”

Carpinteria City Councilman Gregg Carty found himself in the midst of the unexpected firefight that night. He’d driven up to check on his sister and brother-in-law at their home, but quickly realized that many residents had no idea of the danger.

Carty started running from home to home, knocking on doors along Shepard Mesa Lane and telling residents to evacuate.

Carty could feel the heat from the nearby fire, and its roar sounded “like the biggest surf you’ve ever heard,” he said. Burning embers fell all around him as he jogged around alerting homeowners to the risk. Gallagher said that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department also helped to inform residents of the need to evacuate.

The fire kept pushing toward homes, with firefighters on the ground working hose lines while night helicopters made water drops onto the front. Just when Gallagher thought the fire might push through, daybreak allowed for the heavier helicopters to drop bigger water loads. “It was amazing night,” Gallagher said.

The Thomas Fire brought real trauma that we have no choice but to deal with.

No one is quite themselves; at least I haven’t encountered anyone who claims to feel normal; surreal is a more common descriptor. At 48 years old, Briggs brings more than 20 years of teaching experience to his job at Carpinteria Middle School— Thursday, September 7, 2017  3 those years in the more economically and socially challenged areas of south Ventura County. “I’m interested in kids with emotional, behavioral and academic challenges,” Briggs said. Coming to Carpinteria Middle School, Briggs said that he was not interested in seeing his future staffs’ teaching records, preferring instead to start his job with high expectations of both teachers and students. “If you have low expectations of someone,” Briggs explained, “they’re going to meet those, too.”

Lisa O’Reilly celebrates Christmas in 1973 with her mother and siblings— her mom proudly sporting a new hat and scarf. across the breadth of our bed, compelling a twin-sized cover to do a king-sized job. It doesn’t quite cover our toes, but my husband and I can pull it up to our chins and snuggle in under its weight.

The warmth kindles whispers, and we trade secrets and memories before drifting to sleep. I’ve never asked him to look for the number four—I’m afraid he’ll find it and some mystery will be lost. But I do tell him of hours spent in my grandparents’ kitchen, how our talks and laughter mingled with the scents of Gramma’s cooking and Grampa’s pipe, and how with these modest elements we made something both earthly and celestial to save forever.

I tell him these things and others, and he, the Wisconsin boy, tells me I don’t know cold. And he’s right—I don’t.

Fire suppression over the last several decades has given the Thomas Fire much to chew on this week. The last fire to hit the hills behind Carpinteria in recent history was the Romero Fire in 1971. It burned 160,000 acres over the course of 10 days. The fire, which destroyed four homes, injured an estimated 23 people and killed four, including a bulldozer operator.

Cate basketball sets sights high

BY ALONZO OROZCO Beginning his third year as coach of the Cate School boys basketball team, Andy Gill seems to be at the helm of a rising program. Last year the Rams finished 13-6 overall, 7-3 in the Frontier League, and the boys from Cate Mesa earned two victories to advance to the third round of the CIF-SS Division 6 Tournament before falling to Pacifica Christian (Orange County) 79-62 in the quarterfinals.

“I’d say the (basketball) culture is definitely changing for the positive; we had 45 kids tryout this year,” said Gill.

As a reward for their success, the Rams moved up a division to 5AA, but Gill has confidence that this year’s squad will be up to the challenge. Although the Rams lost defensive stalwarts Pierce Lundt, Mason Mackall and Chase McCaw to graduation last year, they’ll welcome 10 members from the football team to help defend the basket. This season’s Rams also figure to be more proficient at the offensive end.

“We definitely are adding a lot more scoring options. I think the ball is going to be spread around a little more,” explained Gill, a Bishop Diego alum.

The offense will be led by last year’s Frontier League MVP, senior captain Marko Pliso, a three-year varsity performer. Cate will also depend on a pair of 6-foot, 3-inch sophomores Thomas Nettesheim and Khadim Pouye, who will be inserted into the starting lineup this

season. Pouye who has bulked up near the 185-pound mark, missed the first game due to a football injury. Senior co-captain Patrick Armstrong will also play a key role, as well as Andy McHarg, yet another senior co-captain.

This season will have a different feel to it, as the Rams will miss out on nine games this year due to the massive Thomas Fire that is still affecting the region. Cate School evacuated last week, thought the fire has spared the campus in the foothills. Gill remains optimistic about the stoppage in play. “I actually think that this (the loss of games) is going to make them a little hungrier because they have the school to fight for, and the City of Carpinteria to fight for,” explained the young coach. They are scheduled to return to the court on Jan. 9, where they travel to Simi Valley to take on Grace Brethren in a league contest.

Thacher and Foothill Tech, who both finished 8-2 last year in the Frontier, should again end up near the top of the pack. Villanova, with its strong play in the post, could also contend. But with his team’s size and offensive capability, Gill likes Cate’s chances to capture a league crown. “At the (Frontier League) coaches meeting, everyone said we’re the team to beat,” said Gill. “I’m trying to downplay it a little bit. But to be honest, I’d be a little bit bummed if we didn’t win League this year,” he added.

Following a long road trip, the Rams return home on Jan. 19 where they take on Foothill Tech. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Should have called when he had the chance

On Nov. 23 at approximately 1:30 a.m. a deputy on patrol in a marked Sheriff’s vehicle saw a man lying on the sidewalk on Linden Avenue. The deputy attempted to wake the man by saying “Hey, man,” and “Hello.” The man opened his eyes and the deputy announced himself, but the man had a blank stare and seemed confused. When he stood up, the man staggered back against the glass door of a business. He could not tell the deputy why he was sleeping on the sidewalk or where he lived. He said that he had been at an area restaurant with his girlfriend, but she had left earlier in the night.

The deputy noted a strong smell of alcohol on the man’s breath, and that he was asleep on the sidewalk at 1:30 a.m. in shorts and a T-shirt. The deputy arrested the man for public intoxication, and the man said that he wanted to call his girlfriend. As the deputy was collecting the man’s belongings he saw a cell phone with multiple missed calls and text messages from a number the man identified as belonging to his girlfriend.

The deputy told the man that he had had ample opportunity to call his girlfriend and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Smoking with warrants

On Nov. 25 at approximately 8 a.m. a 28-year-old man with whom deputies have had many contacts, was standing in front of a fast food restaurant on Casitas Pass Road smoking a cigarette. Smoking is not permitted in the City of Carpinteria.

The deputy issued the man a citation for smoking and ran a records check, which revealed outstanding warrants. The man was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Stolen car, heroin

On Nov. 27 at approximately 1:40 a.m. a deputy noticed a grey SUV make an abrupt turn at a high rate of speed into a motel parking lot on Via Real. The deputy pulled into the parking lot and checked the license plate of the SUV and discovered that the vehicle was stolen.

The man driving said that the vehicle belonged to his girlfriend, but the name he provided did not match the name of the registered owner. The deputy placed the man in handcuffs and searched him, finding 2 grams of heroin and a red straw with heroin residue. The arrestee had two motel keys in possession, but no one answered the door when a deputy knocked. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Don’t forget the ball, man

On Nov. 29 at approximately 2 p.m. a deputy responded to a call about a man throwing rocks against a wall in an alley adjacent to Carpinteria Avenue. The deputy contacted a 38-year-old man, who was shirtless and throwing a rubber ball against a wall. He appeared unsteady on his feet, according to the deputy’s report. The man disregarded the deputy’s request for him to sit down against the wall, but then did sit down in the middle of the alley. He was carrying a hatchet on his hip, and the deputy took it and placed it in his vehicle for his own safety. The man said he did not know why anyone would have called the Sheriff about him, and that he did not think being shirtless should bother anyone. He said he was on his way to Los Angeles, and that he did not have any alcohol on him and that he had not been drinking.

While speaking with the man, the deputy saw a jacket and a hat on the ground nearby, and asked the man if he could search his possessions. After receiving consent, the deputy found a blue bottle of alcohol partially consumed. The man said that he had not wanted to admit to having been drinking because he did not want to go to jail. The deputy stated that the man smelled of alcohol and had watery, glassy eyes and “based off the totality of circumstances,” the deputy determined that the man was unable to care for his own safety. He was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

As he was being placed in the deputy’s patrol vehicle, the deputy noted that the man became “belligerent and irate” about his ball being left at the scene, and the deputy assured him that it was included with the man’s belongings to be booked at the jail.

On Dec. 2 at approximately 7:40 p.m. a deputy responded to a report of an intoxicated man on Carpinteria Avenue.

The deputy found a 59-year-old man matching the description given sitting on a chair. When asked where he was going, the man said he was going to watch a movie. The deputy smelled a strong odor of alcohol and when he asked the man how much he’d had to drink, the man reportedly said “Not enough.” He was arrested for public intoxication and the deputy found a bottle of vodka in the man’s pocket before transporting him to Santa Barbara County Jail.
