Briefly M3 Multifamily hopes to begin construction early this spring on a mixeduse building slated for the corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues.

Bakery project delayed

Groundbreaking for a new mixed-use building on the corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues is now expected to take place early next spring. M3 Multifamily owns the property, which temporarily houses the Boys Scout Christmas Tree Lot, and is preparing to begin construction a city-approved project that includes second-story office space for M3, a commercial space on the first floor and two one-bedroom apartments.

Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro is contracted to lease the 3,000-square-foot commercial space, and initially ground was set to break in early 2017 for an early 2018 opening of the eatery. According to Jon Martin of M3, the process leading to construction has been more expensive and time consuming than anticipated, but the company is still moving forward in its plans. The city granted a 36-month extension on the project in December 2014, which is set to expire next month. Since Carpinteria allows just one extension, M3 will have to resubmit plans for approval. Martin said that the company plans to do just that and hopes that the same plans approved three years ago will sail through the process.

Brush off the binos for the Christmas Bird Count

Each year, the National Audubon Society conducts its annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), an event that sees groups of birders around the world surveying bird populations in their areas and submitting their findings to Audubon. On Saturday, Dec. 16, for the ninth-consecutive year, Carpinteria will JOHN BAiLEY PHOTO contribute its efforts to the cause. As many as 100 birders from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and elsewhere will converge in Carpinteria to spend the day pursuing their hobby. They will spread out over a 15-mile diameter circle in the Carpinteria Valley, bounded on the east by Mussel Shoals, on the west by Fernald Point, and pushing up into the Santa Ynez Valley and out three miles into the Pacific on the north and south. This information is used to assess the status of bird species in order to better understand their behavior patterns, population dynamics, needs and threats to their survival.

Last year’s Carpinteria count totaled 140 different species and nearly 10,000 individual birds. The highest count, in 2014, was a remarkable 158 species. This year, the group’s goal is 160.

During the past two months, Carpinteria CBC co-administrator John Callender offered a series of free informal lectures and field trips for people wishing to begin bird watching. Beginners are welcome to participate in the Christmas Bird Count. Many who began birding only a few years ago have now participated in several counts.

Carpinteria’s annual Holiday Spirit Parade still has room for more entries. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. along Linden Avenue. Every year the street lines with viewers eager to watch friends and family dance, roll and ride in colorful costumes befitting the season. Participation is free, but groups must register in advance. Fundraising and heart-pumping is still underway for the Franklin Trail Turkey Trot & Tread, and last weekend kicked off with a pop-up party a mile up the trail.

Turkey Trotters hold pop-up party

In Franklin Trail Turkey Trot & Tread news, the crew dedicated to regular jaunts up the trail in an effort to raise money for its completion held a “popup party” on Nov. 17 at what has been dubbed the “Ole Timers/First Timers Bench” about a mile up the path. The Turkey Trot & Tread is well underway now, and will wrap up at the end of the month with the goal of raising $15,000.

An Awards and Wrap-Up Party will be held on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Island Brewing Company, 5049 6th Street.

Water District joins Toys for Tots effort

Carpinteria Valley Water District is working with Toys for Tots to collect new, unwrapped toys for children in need this holiday season. The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. Anyone who wishes to participate can drop off toys at CVWD, located at 1301 Santa Ynez Ave.

Trolley tickets on sale

Tickets are still available for the Holiday Lights Tour, the annual Canalino School fundraiser that shuttles ticket holders through the lightest, brightest, most dolled up neighborhoods throughout Carpinteria aboard trolleys. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. Trolleys pickup and depart from the school, 1480 Linden Ave. To purchase tickets, contact Nikki at pfcgroup1@yahoo.com. Parents for Canalino also asks that residents in the trolley path put up their lights as soon as possible so that the trolley tour can showcase the best of Carpinteria’s holiday decorations.

The Nov. 16 article entitled “Morning Rotary salutes vets” contained errors. Cynthia Burt, who is the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation creative director, clarified that the foundation’s annual Military Ball is not a fundraiser. She said, “We raise nearly nothing that evening. It is an evening dedicated to veterans, and as I mentioned in my talk, a good portion of the veterans attend on scholarship.”

The foundation is not affiliated with the Santa Barbara County Veterans Service Office.

Let’s make Carpinteria a solar city

What does the Carpinteria High School parking lot, the Casitas Plaza parking lot, the Smart and Final Extra parking lot, the parking lots at the end of Eugenia Place, the parking lots at the Business Park on Via Real and the roofs of many buildings all over Carpinteria have in common?

They could each be covered by shadegiving solar panels. Carpinteria is small enough and sunny enough to become one of the first solar cities in the country.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has delayed renewable energy time-of-use rate implementation to as far out as 2020, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. That’s a billing change that will make renewable energy more affordable, but SCE isn’t going to come knocking on our door with an offer. We need to open a conversation with our local utility company about how they are willing to work with us to start on a clean energy future in Carpinteria.

As Venoco and the fossil fuel industry move out of town, it’s time for a shift.

The price of a photovoltaic system has consistently fallen every year since the National Renewable Energy Laboratory started tracking it. The solar industry’s association reported that in just the last year the price for PV systems fell 20 percent and has fallen more than 70 percent since 2010. The time is now to work with the City of Carpinteria, Southern California Edison, Carpinteria Unified School District and private business owners to come together and make Carpinteria’s future brighter, one photovoltaic cell at a time.

A cheer for cannabis

My family has lived off Foothill Road for 40-plus years. Much has changed since 1976––some good, some bad and some just interesting. We are now sharing the hood with pot growers, a new industry that has taken root in California, an industry presenting exciting growth potentials for our city, county and state coffers. As a rural dweller, I’m quite familiar with the smells lofting from neighboring ranches. They have always run the gamut from horse manure to dueling skunks to freshly tilled fertilizer. We can now add the scent of freshly growing marijuana to that list—a scent that actually smells better than any of the former items listed.

As with any industry, there’s always an “opportunity cost,” always something that we must give up to get something else. Carpinteria is in a very unique position to leverage this industry’s offerings to our greatest and best use. So, how do we find an agreeable position that invites their philanthropic, road maintenance and traffic-control dollars into our community? Carpinterians have always had the unique ability to take opposing positions and find workable, common ground, and I encourage the community to do the same here.

Be cautious with water recycling

On Nov. 17, the front page of the Los Angeles Times carried a story on the Trump administration’s emasculation of the Environmental Protection Agency. That move adversely impacts California’s ability to protect its own water supplies.

Water grows scarce, clean water even more so. Carpinteria must husband its own resources. We can do that if we understand what we are doing and what is at stake. Bob McDonald of our water district writes of salvaging otherwise wasted water, normally flushed to the ocean. With modern technology, care and proper knowledge, that water can be salvaged. But these caveats are critical.

We are talking about recycled wastewater—essentially, from toilet nearly to tap.

Part of the problem is that our bodies, the evolutionary result of millions of years in development, have some incredibly sophisticated systems for detoxifying, and that waste gets discharged to the local sewer. There is no sense in putting these waste materials back through the water you drink—so they need to be removed along with the industrial chemicals, disinfectants, heavy metals, endocrine disrupters, antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, pathogens and myriad other contaminants that end up in the sewer.

This process of removal is not cheap, around $1,700 an acre foot. But that is just the first cut at cost-benefit; there is more. Sewer plants generate industrial volumes of antibiotic-resistant pathogens,

Take that discharged sewage away from its ocean disposal, and now you will start to actually have the world’s safest beach. Studies of similar sewer systems have shown that about 50 percent of the time this discharged sewage, with its pathogens, comes right back to the surf and sand. Proper engineering and an informed community can overcome these obstacles, but we need involved stakeholders with adequate understanding.

Marijuana impacts Carpinteria

The increase in the number of farms cultivating marijuana is significantly impacting the Carpinteria community.

It’s not just the close neighbors that are suffering from the odors, lighting and increased traffic of workers’ cars and delivery trucks. These impacts are affecting the quality and desirability of the entire community, and to varying degrees, causing a decrease in real estate value. How many potential property buyers will be lost because the schools are operating in a cloud of marijuana, or one can’t get away from the persistent odors or nighttime lighting? Anyone affected by this should send a notice of your intent to request a new property assessment due to the decline in your property’s value, to the Santa Barbara County Tax Assessors Office. Their contact information can be found at sbcassessor.com. The fiscal relief you get will be dated from the time of your filing. Advise the assessor of your plans promptly.

Lions Club Festival of Trees Opening ceremony

The Carpinteria Lions Club will host its 8th annual Festival of Trees Opening Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 24, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Carpinteria Arts Center, 865 Linden Ave. The Festival will run daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with numerous trees decorated by local businesses and non-profit organizations. On Nov. 9 at approximately 8:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to an apartment complex on Via Real on a report of a male in dark clothing attempting to cut the window screen and gain entry to a residence. A woman had knocked on her neighbor’s door to tell him that she had just seen someone outside his residence, apparently trying to open a window as she was parking her car in the complex. The woman said the man ran away when he saw her, and that he was wearing dark clothing. A window-blind was drawn shut in the apartment, and a wooden dowel had been placed in a sliding track to prevent the window from being opened from outside. A small cut had been made in the outside window screen, the window slid-open slightly and the blinds lifted slightly as well. Overcast skies had caused condensation on the window and frame, and a deputy was unable to retrieve fingerprints.

who lives near the sign said that his dog had started barking at 4:30 that morning, but he did not hear any vehicles in the area. The sign was bent over towards the man’s residence, but the deputy could not find any paint transfer or evidence that a vehicle had hit the sign. The deputy was able to bend the sign post back to an upright position, but could not twist it so that it was visible from the street.

The estimated cost of the damage is less than $400.

On Nov. 13 at approximately 6:40 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to a bar/restaurant on Linden Avenue on a report of a man refusing to pay his bill. When the reporting deputy arrived, he saw another deputy with a man who was lying down on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant/ bar. The deputy asked the man why he refused to pay his bill, and the man told him that he had not refused and was willing to pay. He gave up his debit card and the bill was paid. The man appeared intoxicated with red, watery eyes and slurred speech. He was unable to stand up when deputies asked him to. A records check revealed a misdemeanor warrant for the man’s arrest for “corporal punishment on spouse and a violation of a court order to prevent domestic violence.” The man was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Nov. 15 at approximately 3 p.m. a deputy noticed two City of Carpinteria Code Compliance workers speaking with a man outside a donut shop on Carpinteria Avenue. “They appeared to be involved in an investigation from their body posture and facial expressions,” the deputy noted of the workers. Turning his vehicle around and parking at the rear of the donut shop the deputy approached the workers, who were speaking with a man who had a bottle of wine in his hand. As the deputy made contact with the workers and the man with the wine, he reported that the man was yelling at the workers and that he took a sip from the bottle, spilling some of the wine. The deputy recognized the man from previous contacts.

The man was agitated and “speaking gibberish,” according to the deputy’s report. He threw the bottle of wine, which landed in a planter area and did not break. After asking the deputy if he knew where his girlfriend was, the man reportedly admitted that he should not have thrown the bottle, that he could have set it on the ground, but that he didn’t want the deputy to think the wine bottle was a weapon. Because the man characterized the bottle as a possible weapon and admitted throwing it, the deputy charged him with attempting to destroy evidence, arrested him and took him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

CHS Muses prep for “Auntie Mame”

The Carpinteria High School Muses will present “Auntie Mame” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee nightly from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 with a curtain time for all performances at 7 p.m. at the CHS Cafeteria.

Adapted from the 1955 best-selling novel by Patrick Dennis, the play chronicles the madcap adventures of a boy growing up as the ward of the somewhat unconventional sister of his late father. The story follows Auntie Mame and Patrick from the Roaring 20s through the Great Depression. Mame’s fortunes rise and fall, but her devotion to her nephew never waivers as she teaches him (and everyone else around her) how to “live, live, live!”

Sharing the lead role of Auntie Mame are seniors Olivia Light and Montana Wilcox. Young Patrick will be played by Kaela Kelley and Katie Cleek, with Eli Mochel portraying older Patrick. Mame’s secretary Agnes Gooch will be played by Sarah Weitzman and Bali Gutierrez, and Ryan Fly will undertake the role of Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside. The rest of the 31 Muses students round out the large cast of characters that Mame and Patrick encounter in their zany adventures.

Tickets are available at the door starting 30 minutes before each performance.

The Carpinteria after-school program’s (STEP-UP) competitive robotics team, CHS Robotics, finished beyond their wildest expectations at their first tournament, placing second out of 15 established and experienced robotics programs in the greater Los Angeles area. “They had the smallest robot in the competition,” co-coach David Pennington said, “and yet found themselves in first place all the way up to the final match of the tournament where they missed the first-place spot by one tiny point.”

Pennington noted that the team was guided invaluably by coach and mentor George Cadiente and Ben Cerda. The next tournament will be on Dec. 2, at Marlborough High School in Los Angeles.

Bates beauty prepares to leave the family

When R.W. Bates looked out the southfacing windows of his brand new home in 1928, the view he smiled down on is the same one his granddaughter Robbie Hutto sees when she visits the family house on the hill today—a blanket of blue sea with the Channel Islands stretched across the horizon.

The Bates house, having aged gracefully in the loving hands of R.W.’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is about to close its first 90-year chapter.

Originally the home sat in the midst of a 1,200-acre ranch, but over the decades the sprawling property was sliced up and sold off in pieces until now what remains is the three acres surrounding the hilltop home, all of which is now in escrow.

The Bates family stamped its name on Carpinteria long before building the family home. In 1882, Dr. Charles Bell Bates, one Santa Barbara’s first medical doctors, purchased the ranch, which had been part of a Spanish land grant.

Charles’ son Robert volunteered as an ambulance driver during World War I. He worked alongside Ernest Hemingway and met his future wife, a Parisian nurse, after he was wounded and hospitalized. According to a Bates family blog, “Having spent years along the French Riviera, the newly married Mrs. Bates was very impressed and excited about a future at Rincon!”

While building their house on the hill above Rincon Point, the young family lived in a small cottage on the sand. A big winter storm swept the little house out to sea, but R.W., a man who despised waste, refused to let it go and hired a mule team to drag it back up the beach, Hutto said.

When the home was complete in 1928, R.W. and Juliette Bates peered down on Rincon Point to the south and across the Santa Ynez mountains to the north. Unlike the wooden craftsman-style homes popular at the time, the Bates house was built with handmade adobe bricks. Large rooms and plentiful windows gave it an airy, open feel, and a wide courtyard with a fireplace and fountain allowed for outdoor living ahead of its time.

R.W. lined the long driveway and surrounded the house with eucalyptus to provide some much-needed shade on the exposed hilltop. At the time, the ranch’s big challenge was access to fresh water, and R.W. had to hand-carry buckets of water to keep the trees alive. Lima beans and walnuts were dry farmed on Bates Ranch before Lake Casitas water was available.

The Bates children—Bobette, Fleurette, Juliette and Bobby—grew up on a 1,200acre playground. They fished from the seashore, explored the creek and rode horses all over the hillsides.

R.W.’s wife Juliette passed away around 1964, and R.W. died around 1976.

Their four kids inherited the home, and Juliette moved in with her husband David Gray, a respected urologist. The pair hired R.W.’s younger brother Edward Bates to design an addition to the home. He added a master bedroom and bathroom that

Hutto and her sisters, who now own the home, grew up in Oakland, where safety was always a concern. They spent summers during the 1950s and 1960s at her grandparents’ ranch—a place where they enjoyed “total freedom,” Hutto remembered fondly. They roamed the seashore collecting sea glass and built bonfires at night in the sand. Years later, Robbie and her husband Ed moved themselves and their two young children, David and Molly, from Seattle to the Bates Ranch, where they lived in a converted Army barracks that that housed soldiers during World War II. In 2010, Molly, owner of Botanik in Summerland, redecorated the entire home, and the family began operating it as vacation rental and event venue. David has served as groundskeeper, maintaining and improving the landscaping and nearly 90-year-old structures. “It has been such a good feeling bringing the property back because I have such good memories of it,” said Robbie.

Though it’s difficult to let go of such an important piece of family history, Robbie is pleased that another family can begin writing the next installment of adventures on the top of the hill.

MINDING OUR BUSINESS SHANE BRUCE The holidays are a time for connecting with friends and family, and reflecting upon life’s gifts that we are most grateful for. One of these gifts came to me by way of 1950s teen idol Tab Hunter. Tab Hunter was in Carpinteria last March for the showing of a documentary about his life at the Plaza Theater. While I am grateful for Mr. Hunter’s hit song, “Young Love,” what I’m most grateful to him for is that he told us that Esau’s Café was a favorite local eating haunt of his.

After only three visits to Esau’s, servers Lindsay Dugwyler, Kerry Gough and Kim Liscomb knew my order by heart (I am a creature of habit!). I am greeted by name, and made to feel at home by Jacob Garside, who never allows my water glass or coffee cup to be empty. These hospitable qualities personify what I find most appealing about small family businesses. To borrow from the old TV show “Cheers,” Esau’s Café is a place “Where everybody knows your name.”

Presiding over customers chewing— both the delicious new lunch special, the bison burger with sweet potato fries, and local gossip—is the original surfer girl Arti Stanley. Arti’s gorgeous blue eyes flash with a twinkle, as her laughter fills the air.

She regales you with a story about the latest local best-kept secrets. Arti’s husband, and co-conspirator Scott Stanley is behind the counter, barking out orders and cooking those delicious burgers, alongside Sergio Morales and Chuy Zambrono.

These men are responsible for everything from Esau’s famous chicken fried steak, to the Walk-Away Burrito and the Red-Neck Egg Benedict (yes, you guessed it—eggs benedict over cornbread, with heaps of the kind of gravy your mother made if you are from Savannah, Georgia, and cheesy-grits to boot!)

The friendly staff at Esau’s serves up laughs and hot, heaping plates of food.

The term “down home” describes not only the friendly atmosphere and easy spirit of Esau’s Café, but the foods that so many of us who hail from the Midwest and the South came to know as soul food!

On every level, my Oklahoma roots are well tended!

Many of you already know that Esau’s is a local legend. Arti and Scott, who met in their teens and built a surf-centric lifestyle, bought Esau’s Café from Tom and Ruth Esau in 1978. W.C Tom Esau began his cooking career at the 1939 San Francisco World’s Fair. In 1961, he opened Esau’s Café in Santa Barbara, which became famous for its buttermilk pancakes, going on to become the longest continuously running breakfast house in Santa Barbara. In spite of garnering international fame, with write-ups in travel guides, as well as lifestyle publications, Esau’s remains down-to-earth and quintessentially Carpinteria.

In 2003, the Stanleys, who raised their kids Taylor, Drake and Bo both in the surf and in the restaurant, had an opportunity

Arti said that her landlord and the City of Carpinteria have been extremely accommodating and easy to work with.

The business relies on the entire Stanley family. Drake cooks, and Taylor and Bo cover the floor when Bo’s not teaching girl’s surf-lessons, “empowering girls, one wave at a time!”

But Arti and Scott’s family spirit extends to more than just their biological children. Locals and visitors alike feel it. In addition to having employees who have been with Esau’s for over two decades, Arti employs local high school kids, teaching them important lessons about business, life and love. Whether it’s lending a compassionate ear, doling out wisdom with humor and flare, or just tending to children and animals, Arti has

the qualities of a roll-your-sleeves-upand-get busy community leader.

Conversely, when the Stanley family faced a life-threatening car accident, the community stepped up and took care of them. “My house was cleaned; my refrigerator was stocked with food, and a hospital bed appeared in my home.

Friends and family took over and ran the business while we recovered and regained our health.”

Shane Bruce is a recent transplant from Los Angeles. He has been contributing to area publications for nearly 20 years, including the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley News.

He is grateful to be living in Carpinteria, a place he calls paradise. His column focuses on the heroics of overcoming challenges that small business owners face. Shane believes that small business owners are the true American heroes.

Local author goes noir

In his debut novel, published on Oct. 30, Carpinteria author Van Fleisher paints an all-too-recognizable portrait of a guns-gone-wild America. Set in the near future, the plot of “Final Notice” centers on the age-old question: “If you knew, for certain, that you only a short time to live, what would you do?” A new health/sports watch in the book is so advanced that it can analyze minute changes in the blood and even predict imminent death, sending owners a “Final Notice” alert. The Final Notice feature was initially included in the watch to allow its wearers to get their affairs in order, say their last goodbyes, etc. But in several cases, the opportunity to get revenge with impunity—afforded by the knowledge of impending death—leads to some very unanticipated results, especially when the Final Notice recipient has easy access to a gun.

Laced with dark humor and political satire, “Final Notice” chronicles the reactions of these diverse Notice recipients: a retired truck driver, a U.S. Senator, a benevolent old woman, a resident of a retirement home, a wealthy tycoon and an internationally renowned climate scientist. While the initial premise of the book—the idea of a watch that can predict imminent death—has something of a sci-fi slant to it (much like the submarine in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), the book offers a believable narrative.

And its portrayal of contemporary problems such as political corruption, prejudice and particularly, the role of the NRA in obstructing gun control, will strike a familiar chord with readers.

Photography Club swells to 60 members

What started as a loose conglomeration of six photography enthusiasts in August 2016 has now grown to 60 members all focused on perfecting their approach to the “art of the photograph,” as photographer and Carpinteria Arts Center Executive Director David Powdrell puts it.

With stunning local backdrops like the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Bluffs, Rincon, the Salt Marsh, trails and beaches, Carpinteria offers club members a bounty of photographic possibility. “The level of photographic professionalism in Carpinteria is mind blowing,” Powdrell said. “Many members are world-class photographers traveling around the globe; Fran Collin, Marco Rigonati, Glenn Dubock, Patricia HoughtonClarke, Joshua Curry, Steve Bissell, Simone Reddingius, Bill Werts, Chuck Graham, Mike Wondolowski, Alex Nye and others. Most are simply hobbyists. Several are iPhone photographers capturing some incredible images with just their phones. It’s a full spectrum of talent.” No particular level of skill is required for club membership, and the club is open and welcoming to all ages. Having envisioned a gallery project for some time, the student curator soon discovered the difference between having a concept and making that concept a reality. “I began with big ideas such as venue, deciding on a theme, deciding what kind of art I wanted,” Duffy-Boscagli said. “Once I had set those big ideas in place the entire project became more concrete.”

Carpinteria Arts Center got behind Duffy-Boscagli’s efforts, providing the venue and helping with advertising. Duffy-Boscagli held an ingathering and spent the final week before opening night “physically putting the art up on the walls every night after school until I was fully satisfied with the result.”

Duffy-Boscagli plans to open another pop-up gallery while in high school, and ultimately the teen looks to become a museum curator professionally. An artist herself, Duffy-Boscagli says she is most proficient in studio work, which includes painting, sketching, ink and charcoal, and she is currently working on ceramics. As for her first curated show, complete with music and hors d’oeuvres, Duffy-Boscagli said, “All-inall, it was a great success and all my hard work paid off!”

Live “Paint Out” to be performed at Arts Center Four local and accomplished abstract artists will collaborate on four pieces of art within an hour as part of First Friday events on Dec. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave. Visitors can observe the worksin-progress with complimentary refreshments and a no-host bar. A live auction of the pieces will be held following the event to benefit CAC. The four artists bring unique approaches to painting: Brian Tepper finds satisfaction and energy in using a combination of paints, plaster, and reclaimed objects; Beth Schmohr likes to think of her pieces as “Splattered Fate,” via the actions of dripping, brushing, stroking and splattering; Stuart Carey brings elements of jazz, rhythm, texture and improvisation to his work, reflecting his perception of the world as dynamic energy and color that are in constant motion; and Michael Marzolla emphasizes the creative process using the exploration of color, light and motion.

Brush melted butter into each of the 24 cups in a mini-muffin baking pan. Fill cups to within ¼-inch of the rim of each cup. Place pan on the middle rack of the oven and bake for about 18 minutes, or until well browned. Remove from oven.

Loosen the baby Dutch babies from the pan using a knife and small spoon. Make a cut in the top of each Dutch baby and place a small spoonful of cherry pie filling into the center (one cherry each plus filling). Serve immediately.

Warrior basketball sharpens its skills

The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team began their season on Nov. 21 with a battle on the court against Dos Pueblos—and a result decided after this edition’s deadline. The Warriors hope to improve on last year’s season when they finished 12-13 overall and 4-8 in the Tri-Valley League.

Graduated from last year are Mikey Garibay, Eli Correa and Jacob Garside, all stalwarts from the 2016-2017 squad. But second-year coach Henry Gonzales also returns four of his five starters. “We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do, to be more consistent,” said Gonzales. “We’re not going to be very tall, but we’re going to play hard, that’ll be the signature of this group.”

Junior Chris Ramirez will be back to play the point guard position, running the offense. Also returning is another junior, sharp-shooting guard Noah Nuño.

Defensive and rebounding specialist Terrell Richardson is also back. “He had over 35 (defensive) charges last year, meaning that he took over 35 charges last year, which is really unheard of,” said Gonzales of his senior and his willingness to step in front of a multitude of offensive players driving hard toward the hoop. Six-foot, two-inch senior Dominic Sturdivan also returns. “He’s going to be a big factor in everything we do, as well,” said Gonzales. And Dominic’s brother, junior Brady Sturdivan, with his speed and athleticism, also figures to see more playing time this year.

Last year’s Tri-Valley League champ St. Bonaventure looks to be the favorite of the pack again. Gonzales also likes Bishop Diego to compete with the Ser-

pace by implementing a full-court press on defense. “We learned last year about ourselves that if we did play hard on defense that it fueled our offense,” said Gonzales.

Carpinteria will host Providence of Santa Barbara with the tip-off at 7 p.m. at Warrior Gym.

Cate soccer looks for rebound season

It was an unusual season for Cate School boys soccer coach Pete Mack last year, as he returned to the program after taking a sabbatical the previous year.

“Last year was the first time in a long time, we hadn’t been to the playoffs,” said Mack. Indeed, it was the first time the Rams, playing in a full season, had not qualified for the CIF tournament since the 2007-2008 season.

Although Cate finished the 2016-2017 season under the .500 mark at 4-10-1 overall and 2-8 in the Tri-Valley League, there were a lot of close games. The Rams tied San Marcos, lost to Nordhoff in overtime and fell to crosstown rival Carpinteria by a goal on two different occasions. “We lost to Santa Paula in the final minutes of a game here; all of our games were close,” explained Mack. Santa Paula would finish second in league last season, just a game behind Fillmore.

“We just didn’t have a lot of fire power, and we didn’t have a ton of experience,” said Mack. “We’d made a couple of critical mistakes a game, and those were the deciders,” he added. The team will once again be young this year, with only four returning seniors. The squad also suffered a number of injuries to key players throughout the season last year.

But the Rams have four players back that look to control the middle of the field: sophomore Buba Fofanah, junior Baker Fox, junior Bailor Jalloh and senior Ben Jessup—the “Four B’s,” as coach Mack calls them. “Those are our hardest workers and most skillful players,” he said.

Fofanah has recently been injured, but is expected to be back after the Thanksgiving break.

Jalloh, who missed over half the season with a separated shoulder, also returns.

Fox, who in the second half of the season, became a big playmaker for Cate, will also be back in the lineup. Center-back and captain Ben Jessup, who was hampered by injuries through last year’s campaign, should also make an impact. Junior Jack Deardorff also returns to the pitch, accompanied by his freshman brother Will Deardorff, a group of other freshmen and a few JV players from last year.

Mack sees this year’s league favorites, like most years, to be Santa Paula, Fillmore and Carpinteria. But he likes his team’s upside, “I think this is a team that’s going to work in concert really well with one another,” said the optimistic coach.

It will all unfold when the Rams host St. Bonaventure on Nov. 30 with the kickoff at 3:15 p.m. up on the mesa.

short stops CHS alumni contribute to SBCC’s sports success

In a week that saw the Warriors sports teams idle while transitioning from fall to winter seasons, Carpinteria High School alumni contributed to milestone successes at the next level. The Santa Barbara City College Lady Vaqueros women’s water polo team and the women’s soccer team have had historic fall seasons.

In the pool, the Lady Vaqs earned the 2017 California Community College Athletics Association’s State Championship with the Warriors own Nicole Poulos, who made six saves in the final as SBCC defeated Sierra Community College 8-6 to earn the first water polo state title in school history.

The SBCC women’s soccer team is ranked number-one in the State of California and number-two in the nation. Three Carpinteria alumni have made significant contributions. Alexa Benitez, Monica Garcia and Elizabeth Estrada make up the core of a team that has gone 18-0-1 in 2017, and earned a 4-0 regional playoff win over Antelope Valley on Nov. 18.

This season’s Carpinteria High School football team received a slew of Frontier League honors headed by senior running back Leo Vargas who was named Co-MVP of the League on Offense. Also named to the First Team Defense was senior Lorenzo Jaime at DB, senior Jose Alvarado at DL, junior Chris Ramirez at DB, and sophomore Jacob Macias at LB. The First Team Offense included senior Terrell Richardson at WR, junior Brady Sturdivan at WR, junior Vance Keiser at QB, and senior David Torres at OL. U10 and U12 Girls soccer teams compete in Camarillo

The Carpinteria u10 and u12 AYSO Girls soccer teams represented well in Camarillo this weekend. The U10 squad, nicknamed the Kiwis, ended tournament play with a 2-1 record, finishing with a comeback win in overtime. Meanwhile, Carpinteria United, an AYSO U12 girls team, wrapped up a 16-2 season with a third-place finish at last weekend’s Area 10W Championship Tournament. united Head Coach Richard Pakes said, “Our girls had a fantastic season; they came together as a team and each player really improved during the course of the season … They represented Carpinteria with great pride and sportsmanship.”

Scouts prepare to open tree lot

The corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues has once again been transformed under Boy Scout power into a home for Christmas trees. The lot is ready and waiting for trees to be delivered from the Pacific Northwest and will open to the public starting on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 9 a.m. The scouts will sell top quality Douglas, Noble, Nordmann and Turkish trees in a variety of sizes and prices. Boy Scouts and their families will man the lot, which will be open seven days a week and will accept credit cards this year. Deliveries are available on weekends, and can be arranged at time of purchase. Hours of operation are Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday from noon to 8:30 p.m.

Going strong for over 50 years, the Carpinteria Boy Scout Christmas Tree lot provides the program funding for Cub Scout Pack 50, Boy Scout Troop 50 and Boy Scout Troop 147. Pack 50 will hold meetings at the tree lot on Mondays at 5:30 p.m., and Troop 50 will hold meetings on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join the meetings and enjoy hotdogs and marshmallows.

Lions still on the move

The Carpinteria Club continues its effort to visit other area clubs. On Nov. 14, four members attended the dinner meeting of the Camarillo-Pleasant Valley Club, which is also known as “Big Red” for their red shirts and jackets. Much to the surprise of the Carpinteria members, the Camarillo-Pleasant Valley Club had prepared barbecue tritip, pasta, shrimp, garlic bread and salad. Although the menu was very similar to the Carpinteria club’s, the local Lions enjoyed the camaraderie and look forward to more visits. “The several visitations we have made have all been fun, and it’s interesting to see how each club runs its meetings a little differently,” said President Clyde Freeman.

No drilling in North America’s Serengeti

The mighty North Slope of the Brooks Range in Northeastern Alaska mirrored a scene from “Lord of the Rings” as four of us rafted down the Upper Marsh Fork, the Canning and the Staines rivers before reaching the frigid Arctic Ocean.

It was 17 days soaking in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), North America’s largest refuge and also the most vulnerable.

There is no denying the grandeur of the ANWR. It’s a place steeped in rugged landscapes and expansive coastal plains and teeming with mega fauna—not to mention Alaska’s state bird, the mosquito.

There is no infrastructure throughout its 19,286,722 acres, land that has been protected since 1960.

Yet over the decades the ANWR has repeatedly been threatened for its oil potential. Specifically, the vast tundra of the Coastal Plain, where supposedly 7.7 billion barrels await frothing oil companies. Thanks to the resiliency of ongoing conservation efforts the ANWR has fended off all its challengers until now.

This time it feels somewhat different. It feels as if the threat is picking up steam.

Maybe it’s just me, but with the current administration this fragile environment and all its resources seem exposed to an assault, so I have to ask myself, “Isn’t this a wildlife refuge we’re talking here?”

That means to me that flora and fauna, rivers, ocean, mountains and tundra should flourish without any disruptions, that the refuge should remain a pristine environment for eternity. Nevertheless, here we are again, and Congress has to come to its senses and act properly to just let the ANWR be once and for all.

It’s that simple.

When myself and three others rafted beyond the snowcapped peaks of the Brooks Range, the exit was abrupt. What lay before us was the sweeping expanse of the Coastal Plain, where 130,000 caribou migrate and drop their calves each year.

It’s also a vital nesting ground for thousands of song and shorebirds. I vividly remember the first time I got a whiff of salty Arctic air. We were only about four miles away from the Arctic Ocean, and we could smell the piercing rot of a caribou carcass like a sock to the face. We didn’t think anything of it as we floated by until we ran into the one person ensconced on the Coastal Plain each June and July.

“You missed a polar bear by four days,” said the scraggly wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who annually monitors the mind-numbing number of shorebird nests on the Coastal Plain for two months. “It was emaciated when it reached the barrier island. It spent three days gorging on that caribou carcass and then it headed back out on the ice.”

And there wasn’t much of that. There’s no denying that the ice is melting; ghostly ice floes creaked and cracked East-toWest past desolate barrier islands. Seemingly every predator on the Coastal Plain had left its prints on the narrow, gritty isles—a graveyard of animal carcasses, caribou antlers, cobble and driftwood.

There was a maze of detailed prints left by polar and grizzly bears, wolves, Arctic fox, caribou and myriad avian species. I imagine those beaches would be nearly void of such traffic if oil companies were permitted to sink their drills into the squishy tundra.

Arctic summers are short, but the days never cease. Sunset is around 3 a.m., at which point the sun barely dips below the horizon, followed by sunrise at 5 a.m. I would typically head out alone on a hike at midnight across the spongy tundra and along the peripheries of tranquil, glassy, freshwater lagoons and ponds. The only company I kept was a scruffy and curi-

ous caribou calf, a marauding Arctic fox, several red-necked phalaropes and dunlins foraging the shallows and brilliant Pacific loons, their calls of qua-qua-qua and kwuk-kwuk-kwuk could be heard clear to the Arctic Ocean. Otherwise, the silence was intoxicating but towards the end of my last night in the refuge it unfortunately wasn’t.

That last night will forever be etched in my memory. The Arctic air seemed especially clear, cool and crisp, the sky fluctuating between a wispy purple and pink, but my heart sank when I made out the faint thud of oil drills on the distant Beaufort Sea at Point Thomson to the

west. I dropped my pack and sat on a knoll overlooking an oval-shaped lagoon, really concentrating on what I was listening for. It was well-past midnight as I scanned the horizon with my binoculars.

I could barely see the oil drills, the greatest threat to the otherwise pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Bob and Jean Cuellar celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family on Aug. 5 in Cambria Pines, Calif., then departed for Oahu for a fun-filled two weeks of visiting with their nephew who resides there. The Cuellars hiked Diamond Head, snorkeled, parasailed, visited the famous North Shore and Waikiki Beach. Pearl Harbor was a highlight of the trip, as well as relaxing in the warm blue waters of Hawaii. A fabulous luau ended their trip, and he Cuellars vowed to return to the beautiful island.

Jeremy Stein of Carpinteria, Calif. and Shelby Thomas of Pine Mountain, Calif. were married on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The reception was held in Carpinteria at the home of the g ro o m ’ s p a re n t s , Carla and Brad Stein.

The bride’s parents are Deanna and Jim Thomas.

Jeremy is a 2010 graduate of Carpinteria High School.

He went on to play football and earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He is a project engineer at M&C Tech Group in Ventura. Shelby is a graduate of California State University, Chico and works as an event planner for the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation in Santa Barbara.

Kevin Stein was best man. Groomsmen were Eric Stein, Wesley Franken, Daniel Babineaux, Aaron Phillips, Mike Kremske and Trevor White. Grace Phillips was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Lizz Stein, Varleria Rosen, Sahara Khouja, Danielle Boshoff, Jeana Van and Cierra Anderson.

After the wedding the couple flew to Seattle, Wash. for a honeymoon trip that included a driving tour of the Olympic Peninsula (one of National Geographic’s ultimate road trips) and British Columbia. They will make their home in Ventura.
