Trailing their Malibu opponents 14-7 into the fourth quarter, the Carpinteria High School Warriors nevertheless pulled out a 29-14 victory last Friday, Oct. 20, at Memorial Stadium with three touchdowns in the final 12 minutes of the game. Chris Ramirez (pictured) picked off a Malibu pass, returning 30 yards for a touchdown on the interception. The Warrior team participated in 40 minutes of CHS Senior Night festivities prior to the game, which had head coach Rick Candaele concerned about his players’ focus going into the match up against Malibu. And while it may have taken four quarters to get there, the Warriors won the night and look forward to meeting Fillmore High this Friday, Oct. 27.

Former insurance licensee Brett E. Lovett, 46, of Camarillo was arrested last week on multiple felony counts, including theft, burglary, forgery, embezzlement and conspiracy after allegedly defrauding at least nine victims of close to $1.2 million. Several of Lovett’s known victims are senior citizens he allegedly met and befriended at a place of worship in Carpinteria. Other victims sought legal aid advice from Lovett through his Legal Aid Information business. Victims entrusted Lovett with their money for investments that never existed or for financial management purposes. Lovett SuBmIttEd has been charged with misappropriating Brett E. Lovett, 46, of Camarillo is the money for his own personal use and accused of swindling local seniors to re-pay some of his victims—someout of their money. Authorities are times using his Power of Attorney and seeking anyone else who may be a Promissory Notes to embezzle funds victim. from victims.

A 15-month investigation conducted by the California department of Insurance, Investigation division in Valencia, revealed that Lovett defrauded his victims between 2011 and 2016. Robert C. Burlison, 64, a licensed California attorney and owner of Burlison Law Group in Pasadena, is alleged to have aided and conspired with Lovett in at least one of the crimes. He was also arrested. Both men were released on bail.

Anyone who has information on Lovett or Burlison, or believes they may have been a victim, is encouraged to contact the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office at 568-2312.

Lovett has a history of embezzling money from members of the places of worship he attends. In 2007, he was ordered to pay more than $675,900 in restitution, fines and sanctions by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFtC). He never paid and had a permanent injunction placed against him.

Between 2002 and 2005, he also fraudulently solicited money from individuals.

Linden Tipuanas planned for removal

A number of tipuana trees—whose wide, leafy canopies are well loved, but whose shallow root systems do extensive damage—are slated for removal on Linden Avenue.

Planted in the 1990s for their shade and beauty, the trees have lifted concrete sidewalks and street pavement. the city patched the damage for years before beginning a phased removal a few years ago. many of the trees are now gone, but the tipuanas at 600, 910, 855, 778 and 892 Linden Avenue are on the list for removal now. Protests against the removals can be addressed to the Public Works department at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. A meeting of the tree Advisory Committee is scheduled for thursday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. members of the public can attend and express themselves during the public comment period.

Don’t take the trees

The City of Carpinteria has posted a notice to remove a Tipuana tree at 855 Linden Ave. This tree is so beautiful, and provides shade at the Carpinteria Arts Center patio area, where several times a year events are held for the enjoyment of citizens and visitors to our town. We need this tree to enhance the environment on one of the main streets in our town.

The root problem with this tree doesn’t effect the sidewalk, but makes a bumpy street. If the city is concerned about safety, they could paint the curb red in front of the tree or find another alternative.

I encourage all citizens to write to Public Works Department at 5775 Carpinteria Ave., Carpinteria CA 93013 and protest the removal of this tree. Your letter to protect the tree must include your name, address and reason for protest. And on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. attend the Tree Advisory meeting at the City Hall in the Council Chambers.

Think of the pleasure you receive when you drive down Linden Avenue.

Sen. John McCain indirectly criticized Donald Trump and his followers for their nationalist, white-supremacist ideology.

Trump responded with threats to “fight back, and it won’t be pretty.” Senator McCain pointed out that he has “faced tougher adversaries.” Touche!

For the record: On the one hand, Senator McCain (with whom I disagree on many issues) is a highly decorated, war-tested veteran. On the other tiny little hand, Donald Trump is a yellowbellied, draft-dodging coward who tries to bully or weasel himself out of any real fights. We can choose sides or stay on the sideline. A pop-up gallery comes to the Arts Center

Cate School student Biba Duffy-Boscagli is curating an upcoming pop-up gallery student-art show at the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave., on First Friday, Nov. 3. With an interest in becoming a museum curator, Duffy-Boscagli hopes to gain valuable experience with the Arts Center show. The theme she has chosen for the pop-up gallery is “growth,” and a public-art component of the show will include art supplies and a large sheet of paper that visitors will be encouraged to alter or add to, so that when they leave the gallery it will not be the same as when they arrived—in this way, with each visitor, the paper will change and “grow.”

The opening reception on Nov. 3 will include music performed by Cate School musicians Zoey Hale and Sophie Johnson. Student-artists’ submissions are due by Oct. 29 and those interested in participating should contact the curator by email at biba_duffy-boscagli@cate.org.

Duffy-Boscagli says that she finds “the concept of growth incredibly interesting, as it is something everyone constantly experiences, yet everyone’s experiences are different. Seeing the difference through art is something I’m extremely excited about, and cannot wait to see how everyone interprets the theme and translates it to art.”

Community asked to support capital campaign

Sometimes looking backward is the best way to move forward. That’s what Plaza Playhouse Theater board members decided this fall when they took the first steps to reincarnate the Alcazar Theatre— an elegant venue full of red velvet and gilded relief born in the roaring ‘20s and well loved by a community hungry for motion pictures.

Nearly 90 years later, the little theater is ready for another round of glory days. Operating for seven years as Plaza Playhouse Theater, the space has successfully given the community what it needs—a place for concerts, movies, original plays, fundraisers and talent shows. Now the theater needs the community to reciprocate.

A $700,000 capital campaign aims to rejuvenate the Alcazar Theatre with new lights, sound, movie projector, marquis and loge boxes. A remodeled lobby is on the list, along with the construction of backstage bathrooms for performers and a garden patio for events.

New Executive Director Chad Sands, a 37-year-old USC graduate who studied film production, nudged the board toward the ambitious effort to give the old theater what she deserves. Sands believes that the theater belongs on the same level as its historic neighbors to the west. The Lobero and Granada have been restored and are considered cultural and historic jewels. “We believe this theater belongs alongside those others,” said Sands. “It deserves to go back to its roots.”

Sands dove head first into his role though, like the board, he collects no paycheck from the theater. “He’s a mover,” said boardmember Asa Olsson. “It feels like we’re reigniting our passion.”

Seven years ago, the Plaza Theater sat dark and empty, facing an uncertain future. Metropolitan Theaters had remodeled the interior in an expensive attempt to revive the old movie house, but the little town hadn’t been able to support

Highly supportive landlords have been key, Olsson stressed. Elizabeth and William Wood owned and managed the building in 2010 and were happy to work with the nonprofit to provide the community with such an important resource.

William Sr. has since passed away, and the Woods’ son, William Jr., has stepped in and been “as gracious a landlord as his parents,” Olsson reported.

The original Alcazar was the vision of Oliver Prickett, a Hollywood actor who wanted to bring movies to Carpinteria.

With the help of the community, he raised $50,000 to open the Alcazar in April, 1928.

The capital campaign and return to the name Alcazar kicks off this weekend with the screening of “House of Wax,” a horror film in which Prickett plays a small part.

Prickett’s family will act as a partner in the theater’s rehabilitation. Jane Luthard, Prickett’s daughter, passed away earlier this year, and her family has committed $20,000 to remodel the lobby and pledged an additional matching community grant.

Every dollar donated toward the campaign will be matched up to $30,000.

Sands hopes to raise the $700,000 in the next year and complete the restoration and expansion in a few years.

The Plaza Playhouse T h e a t e r, 4916 C a r p i n t e r i a Av e . , presents the 1953 film “House of Wax” on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. Wax sculptor Henry (Vincent Price) is horrified to learn that his business partner, Matthew (Roy Roberts), plans on torching their wax museum to collect on the insurance policy.

Henry miraculously survives a fiery confrontation with Matthew and re-emerges some years after with a museum of his own. On Oct. 12 at approximately 1:15 p.m. an 18-year-old man walked into a bike shop on Carpinteria Avenue asking if the shop owner had any “fixies” (a fixed-gear bike) for sale. The owner said he had one in a rack in front of the shop and the young man then grabbed the bike and rode away westbound on Carpinteria Avenue before turning south on Holly Avenue.

The shop owner hopped on a bike and rode after the thief. As the owner turned on to Holly, the suspect was riding back up Holly at a high rate of speed toward the owner. The owner then swerved toward the would-be bike thief, stuck out his right arm and “clotheslined” him.

Both riders fell to the ground. The suspect then wrestled with the shop owner, trying to get the bike and flee, but the shop owner got the best of the accused bike thief. He was able to detain him on the street until deputies reached the scene.

The man’s legs were tied with a piece of rope when deputies arrived, and the shop owner was holding him face down on the street. The suspect refused to speak with deputies, and he was arrested for repeatedly trying to take the bike by force and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Scaring the kids

On Oct. 13 at approximately 3 p.m. a group of 9- and 10-year-old students were running on the track at Aliso School with a staff member supervising their activity when a man on the outside of the fence threatened them. The man, who stood between the school and the railroad tracks, pulled out a pocket knife and said, “You better run for your lives” while pointing the estimated 4-inch blade at them. He also reportedly said “F—k you,” and told one of the children to come back at 8 p.m. and he would give him marijuana. The children ran to the supervisor, who took them to a room and secured them there while calling 911.

The supervisor described a man wearing white clothing with a black backpack.

Responding deputies found a man matching the description sitting under the train trestle that runs over a concrete-lined creek drainage and detained him at gun-

point. The man had a bag with him and a bottle of beer. They took the 22-year-old into custody for making criminal threats.

Deputies could not find a knife and reported that they believed the man may have thrown the knife into the creek and that the water-level was up. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Red Ryder

On Oct. 17 at approximately 4:40 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Sandyland Road where two landscapers were working—one of the men had called to report windows being shattered with a BB gun or slingshot as they worked on another side of the house.

When the reporting deputy arrived, one of the men working there told him that he heard a window shatter and when he came around the side of the house to investigate, he saw a man standing on the porch of a residence across the street. The landscaper said that the man then went inside and observed the landscaper from behind the window blinds of the house.

The man landscaping thought this was suspicious, and called the Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy then went to the residence to speak with the man there, a 68-yearold. The man said that he did not have a slingshot or BB gun, and refused to allow the deputy to search his residence.

Over the course of their conversation, the man repeatedly referenced the noise the landscapers made with their lawn equipment, and that they were in violation of noise ordinances. The man was listed as “a person of interest” in the deputy’s report, but no further action was taken.

The landscaper said that he would call the homeowner where he was working to advise her of the vandalism. The deputy reported finding two broken windows in the house, upstairs and downstairs, and saw a BB lodged in a double-pane window with spider-web cracks. The deputy also noted that he did not believe that whoever shot the BBs intended to harm the landscapers, as they were not on the same side of the house as the broken windows when the damage occurred.

No Motor Tourney on the hook for Nov. 4

Anyone looking for a new fish tale should consider entering the annual No Motor Tournament, a friendly competition that raises funds for restoration of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, Nov. 4. Organized by The Sportfishing Conservancy, the tournament is exclusively for anglers who fish from the beach, shoreline or a variety of “people-powered” craft including kayaks, float tubes and stand-up paddleboards. Unlike traditional tournaments where fish are weighed in, the event rewards anglers who catch the highest cumulative length

of fish in inches. The $20 entry fee includes a fishing bucket, five raffle tickets and a tri-tip lunch at Danny’s Deli. Check in is from 6 to 8 a.m. at Danny’s Deli, 4890 Carpinteria Ave. Participants may fish anywhere they like, but must return to Danny’s Deli by 11:30 a.m. for the tallying of results and announcement of the winners during a special luncheon. Proceeds from the event go to The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Carpinteria Salt Marsh.

New boardwalk to open at State Beach

The final section of the new 1,720-foot boardwalk at Carpinteria State Beach is now complete and will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting on Friday, Oct. 27 at noon. The raised walkway winds along the top of the dunes between Palm and Linden avenues, giving pedestrians and wheelchair users access to the beach and the dunes without disturbing sensitive habitat. Construction of the boardwalk, which started in the fall of 2015 and took place in two phases, was a collaborative project between California Department of Parks and Recreation and the California Conservation Corps. A Proposition 84 Nature Education Facilities grant and a grant from the Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program funded the project. At the ribbon cutting, a line dance performance is planned. The celebration will take place at the Palm end of the boardwalk. Parking will be free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Fitness and firefighting – in sandals!

Is the trail part of your training for the Forest Service or for personal training?

It’s a combination of both. One is because how arduous our job is. You have to stay physically fit and mentally fit; they really combine together to be prepared. So, we try to run or hike Franklin Trail three or four times a week. We fight fires in the mountains, so we have to be fit. Depending on the conditions of the day, we will either run to the gate or go farther. In high fire season like today (it’s going to be a red flag day) we won’t go as far. We will just park the engine at the high school, so that if we get a call we can come back quickly. If it is a winter day and not high fire season, I will run to the forest boundary that is about 5 miles up and back, up past Sutton Creek. And I run on my days off simply because I love running.

We also assist with trail work up on the trail. And we always have firefighters and an engine at the station just in case.

DEBBIE MURPHY Justin Shuman is a lead forest technician with the Los Padres National Forest stationed at the Rincon Station in Carpinteria next to Lion’s Park. Justin has worked in the fire service for 16 years.

He and his wife, Jamie, are happy to be a part of Carpinteria with their American bulldog, Jana.

So it is rumored that you wear sandals on the trail.

I always do. I’ve used Earth Runners for a couple of years. I like the freedom of them. I don’t really like shoes. The sandal forces you to run more naturally, and you pay attention more. I have a new pair to start wearing as these are about done.

My Earth Runners are awesome. I love running in sandals especially because of the freedom of it. I’ve tried every kind of shoe and with these, I just feel better— my legs and my back are good. There is something about just having a sole and a strap that I just enjoy. I run more naturally and am more in tune to the trail.

How long does it take you to run up to the gate and back?

I can run to the gate in about 17 minutes or so. I try not to run back downhill unless I have to. Probably 30 minutes there and back.

What is a “red flag” day?

It is a firefighting term regarding the fire condition of an area. It is determined by a combination of criteria that has to do with winds, low humidity and high temperatures. If we have a sundowner event at the same time, then there is even more reason for concern. The Romero Fire in 1971 was the last time the mountains above Carpinteria have burned. The rains this last year, though needed, simply added to the growth. We all need to be aware and careful. Ninety percent of fires are human caused.

What has the trail done for you?

For me, I think, running in general is relaxing. It is never strenuous. It just clears my head. My job is pretty stressful at times, and being on the trail allows me to not think of much. It allows me to be more in tune with the parts of my job that are both mental and physical. It is wonderful having the trail here in Carpinteria.

It’s nice having it in my backyard, and it’s a very friendly trail.

We need to carry 35-pound packs when we fight fires plus water, food and hoses. It adds up to a lot of weight. So being in shape is critical. The trail helps keeps me fit.

Will you be participating in the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot & Tread Challenge?

I don’t know what that is.

The Turkey Trot is a fundraiser for the Franklin Trail to raise funds to complete the third and last phase of the trail. Hikers and bikers are encouraged to get sponsors and use the trail as many times as they can between Oct. 24 and Dec. 1.

There are prizes for those that hike the most and a community celebration on Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Island Brewing Company, 5049 6th Street.

The Turkey Trot is a celebration of our trail. If you have never hiked the trail, this is a great time to do so. Sponsorship forms are available at the trail kiosk at the front left of Carpinteria High School in front of the administration building.

CMS students get (sand) crabby

Kim Castagna’s two sixth-grade science classes made their first of two annual Sandy Beach Monitoring trips in Carpinteria on Oct. 11 to look at the population of sand crabs and count, measure and determine the sex of the crabs they found. The next trip will be in June when students will compare sand crab populations. On the most-recent trip, students in five groups took 10 samples of sand along a transect. They recorded the sizes of males, females, females with eggs and how many smaller “recruits” were found. Students found many sand crabs between 12 and 19 millimeters, and quite a few females with eggs. Southern California beaches undergo dramatic seasonal change due to a shift in wave energy, with winter storm waves pulling sand offshore, and gentle summer waves carrying sand onshore, widening beaches.

Last week, tri-sport star Sarah Polowczak of Cate School became the Rams’ recipient of this year ’s Phil Womble Memorial Ethics in Sports Award. On the track team Polowczak was a member of the 1600-meter relay that set the school record this year. She also lettered in basketball. “She’s a fierce competitor on the court and a compassionate and caring teammate off it,” said the school’s Sports Information Director Dave Soto.

Having thrown an impressive fundraising bash every year for the last 41, Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop has event planning down to a science. And the local cooperative preschool proved it once again this year, gathering 400 supporters at California Tropics on Casitas Pass Road on Oct. 21 for good food, cold beverages and loads of high-end auction spoils. Themed “Love Grows,” the auction raised over $55,000 for the school, including $10,000 for its scholarship fund. Parents, both current and alumni, dug deeply into their wallets while tucking into the shade during an unseasonably hot day in the cherimoya orchard.

Roland Rotz: A Carpinteria gem CVN

MINDING OUR BUSINESS SHANE BRUCE October can produce some of the most stunning days in Carpinteria. Recent king tides shape an ever-changing coastal landscape, reminding us that life is amorphous and fleeting, and never to be taken for granted. No one knows this better than one who studies the psyche and behavior of people. The term psyche, coined

by Aristotle, means “the mortal soul of humans.” Two decades ago, psychologist and behavior scientist Dr. Roland Rotz found his study difficult in the midst of the noise and mayhem of city life. Seeking to escape the expanding urban sprawl of San Diego, Roland and his wife, Jody, and their two daughters and set up shop in the quietude of Carpinteria.

“I wasn’t sure I could build a practice here, but my family and I longed to be part of this small town,” he recalled.

Roland proved that he could not only build a practice that serves the community in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, but that he could put down solid roots and branch into nationally known practice.

Roland’s broad smile and warm, friendly demeanor is typical of folks here in Carpinteria. As Chairman of the Board for the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce and active member of the Rotary Club in Carpinteria, he is quick to point out what is unique and special about our community. “Silent supporters of this community contributed millions to preserve the beauty of this place, and every year the Rotary does a talent show that raises money for the arts and music programs in the schools. I don’t know of any other coastal town that does this.”

This self-effacing local leader is quick to point out the heroic attributes of others before his own.

Roland garnered national fame with the release of his 2005 book “Fidget to Focus.”

He currently explores with a wide variety of audiences the latest child fad called the fidget spinner, which is used as both a toy and tool for helping people focus.

“School was never easy for me,” Roland confesses, “but I loved learning. I just hated proving it with tests!” His passion for psychology led to his earning a doctorate degree at the California School of Professional Psychology. With postgraduate training in Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in 1991 and 1992 at The Cognitive Therapy Institute, he also worked at Learning Development Services with his mentor and psycholo-

Though they would later come to know one another in little Carpinteria, columnist Shane Bruce first learned about Dr. Roland Rotz while he was attending a conference on ADHD in Washington D.C. Bruce is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who also specializes in ADHD. He is in the process of building a small practice here in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, and he looks forward to participating in a work group with Dr. Rotz geared toward helping teens and their parents. Bruce will be presenting for the Santa Barbara chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SB-CAMFT) in July 2018. gist, Dr. Mark Katz.

Roland developed a system to help others based on his own learning challenges, then developed it into a problem-solving skills curriculum for both adults and kids with learning and executive functional challenges. At the time a psychiatrist colleague recognized the symptoms of ADHD in Roland, prescribing Ritalin.

Roland embraced this, and started the first adult ADHD support group in the country in 1994. This ultimately led to a succession of TV talk shows and radio interviews all geared toward helping people with ADHD function better and live happier and more meaningful lives. It culminated in the publication of “Fidget to Focus.”

Roland has been at his 957 Maple Ave. office for almost 20 years. He currently provides regular lectures at Santa Barbara City College’s adult education program.

In his humble, gentle manner, he is quick to point out that his office staff members are critical. He stresses the importance of intern Sabrina Liu and office manager Robin Niederpruem.

Roland makes his office available to other practitioners and occasionally steps in to teach advanced courses on psychotherapy for the Clinical Doctorate program at Pacifica Graduate Institute.

He leads training and provides therapy and support for parents of kids with ADHD and provides testing for several schools in the area.

It would be an understatement to say that Roland Rotz is an integral part of the Carpinteria community. Carpinteria is the town it is because of people like Roland.

Shane Bruce is a recent transplant from Los Angeles. He has been contributing to area publications for nearly 20 years, including the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley News.

He is grateful to be living in Carpinteria, a place he calls paradise. His column focuses on the heroics of overcoming challenges that small business owners face. Shane believes that small business owners are the true American heroes.

Warriors take a bite out of the Sharks

On a windy night at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium, the Warriors revved up for their Frontier League opener against Malibu last week for what may have been the final home game for the senior class. “We had 40 minutes of festivities (prior to the game). I was kind of concerned how are we going to play after that,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele of the school’s “senior night” program. When the Warriors trailed 14-7 going into the fourth quarter, it looked as though the first-year coach had reason to be worried. But Carpinteria scored three touchdowns in the final 12 minutes, charging back to defeat the Sharks, 29-14.

It was the Warriors’ third consecutive win, the longest streak since 2015, putting the squad a top the league standings at 1-0 and 5-3 overall. The team got off to a good start when quarterback Vance Keiser hit senior Terrell Richardson for a 9-yard scoring play, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead near the end of the first quarter. But Malibu fought back with the strong running of Elijaah Bryant to move deep into Warrior territory at the 13yard line. Then Daniel Rafeedie’s leaping grab of a Jake Friedman pass in the corner of the end zone tied the score with 36 seconds to play in the half.

After a frustrating league loss last week to Villanova, the Cate School football team bounced back with a solid 34-20 victory over the number-seven ranked Upland Christian Academy Eagles on Oct. 21. The win pushes Cate’s record to 4-3.

In an eight-man football rarity, the two sides held each other scoreless in the first quarter. Good defensive plays from sophomore Dalton Phillips and senior Will Bowlin kept the Eagles scoreless in that first frame. The visiting Eagles got the scoring started with about nine minutes left in the second quarter. Cate responded on a 2-yard touchdown run from junior Jack Deardorff to go ahead 7-6. After another Upland Christian score, the Rams found the end zone again on a 13-yard run from junior Drew Anastasio. Cate scored just before the half on a 25-yard pitch-and-catch from Deardorff to Bowlin, and the Rams led 20-12 at the break.

“This was a great game for us; we had plenty of questions about ourselves and we answered a lot of them today,” said Soto. “We played hard against a talented team and I hope we don’t forget how talented we can be,” added the coach who is also the school’s sports information director. The Rams will move into rivalry week, as they welcome the Thacher Toads to town on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff for that game will be 2 p.m.

Girls volleyball

October 17- The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team traveled to Bishop Diego for a match against the Warriors biggest rival, falling to the Cardinals 3-1 with match scores of 17-25, 25-11, 25-8 and 25-12. The Warriors came out and won the first set. “Our players were firing on all cylinders and things were looking good for us,” said Carpinteria spokesperson Michael Caughey. Bu, Bishop Diego who has only lost one league match the whole season, came back to finish the match with three straight sets. Jenny Alaniz had a good night with eight kills, two blocks and one ace. Shaya Alexander had six kills and two blocks; and Yaneli Silva recorded three kills, one ace and 22 assists. The Warriors record is now 6-6 overall and 6-5 in the Frontier League.

October 23 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team made its way south for the final league match of the season, beating Santa Paula 3-1 with game scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-18. The Cardinals took set one. Starting middle blocker Shaya Alexander, had a strong performance, ending the game with seven kills and three blocks. Libero Crystal Sanchez contributed 14 digs and three aces. “Once the Warriors picked up momentum, they never looked back and won the game in four sets,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. Carpinteria finished with a Frontier League record of 7-5, and will find out who their CIF opponent will be tonight.

Girls golf

October 18 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team concluded the second and final round of the Tri-Valley League Finals. Senior Amanda Blair shot a 27-hole total of 141 and finished Second Team All-League. Senior Mikayla Blair tallied 151 to also finish Second Team All-League. Tahis Alcantar and Iliana Esquivel finished their careers with a total of 182. “I don’t think I could have asked for a better group of girls or staff to work with my first season,” said Warriors coach Reina Kearns.

Hannah Hart from Foothill Tech and Grace Hay from Bishop Diego tied with 120 and were named Co-MVPs.

Jr. Warriors of the Week Carpinteria Junior Warriors is a recreational tackle football league serving boys and girls in Carpinteria from ages 6 to 14 years.

Mighty Might: Brayden “Chubba” Real #6, is a first-year player. He is our starting center and has consistently made good snaps. Real has made major progress each week from the start of the season. He fires off the ball and makes big holes for the running backs.

Mighty Mights won 40-14 last Saturday.

October 18 – The Carpinteria High School number-two ranked boys water polo team took on number-one Malibu, falling to the Sharks, 11-8. “The Warriors played hard the whole game, but their efforts were not enough,” said Carpinteria coach Matthew Organista. Junior twins Luke and Solomon Nahooikaika both had two goals, along with two from senior Jordan Perez. Senior goalie Mac Clayton made three six-on-five blocks and junior goalie Liam Slade executed two one-on-one blocks. Juniors Jack Gay and Ali Hamadi each recorded five-meter draws and a goal apiece. “Senior Ryan Fly had the game of his career on defense, shutting down Malibu’s main playmaker,” said Organista.

Bantam: Anthony “Big T” #9, is a second-year starter playing offensive line and defensive line. Espinoza is also one of four team captains. He plays with a lot of heart and tenacity.

In last weekend’s game, he had three tackles for loss and multiple assists.

Espinoza has great compassion for his teammates and family, and he truly exemplifies Warrior spirit. Bantams were defeated 0-22 last Saturday.

Cate School Athletes of the Week

October 19 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team finished up the Tri-Valley League with a home loss to Thacher, 15-3. In singles, Sydney Endow beat a player that she lost to two weeks ago. “Jessica Lord also had a win, and she too looked calm and in control throughout the set,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In doubles, the Warriors picked up a senior win with Diana Gonzalez/Hali Schwasnick finishing up their last home match and set with a win. Lord and Anna Artiaga also played their last match as seniors. “It is one of those matches that we played really well I thought, but we just were on the wrong end of some crucial points and games,” said Bryant.

October 17 – The Cate School girls tennis team bested La Reina, 13-5. The usual number-one doubles pairing of Carol Cai and Sarah Polowczak traded roles with singles players Grace Fuss and Sydney Burton in the second meeting between Cate and La Reina. Fuss and Burton won their first two rounds before JV call-up Yuki Kobayashi took Fuss’ place to earn her first varsity win. “Cai and Polowczak easily won against the La Reina number-two and three players, but could not make much of a dent on the scorecard against Tiara Nourishad,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe.

Jackie Cai, Cate’s number-one that day, fell to Nourishad, 6-3 after being up earlier in the match.

October 19 – The Cate School girls tennis team clinched the Tri-Valley League title with a 13-5 triumph over Foothill Tech, with still one league match remaining against Malibu. The Rams came into the match with an 11-1 record, playing against the 11-2 Dragons. “In singles, Jackie Cai was utterly dominant, with three 6-0 sets,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe. Grace Fuss and Sydney Burton added two sets each, with Yuki Kobayashi adding a set as a third round substitute. In doubles, Carol Cai and Sarah Polowczak played some of the most impressive tennis I’ve seen from that pairing all season,” said Thorpe.

October 23 – The Cate School girls tennis team, with their 16-2 victory over Malibu, have won 26 consecutive league matches, going 10-0 this season to earn a third consecutive Tri-Valley League Title. Senior Lion recognized for long and faithful service

Members of the Carpinteria Lions Club celebrate 90 years of local service during an anniversary dinner last weekend.

Lions roar for 90 years

In October of 1927, a Lions Club District Governor walked into the Carpinteria Herald newspaper office and announced that he wanted to organize a local club. Shortly thereafter, 28 local residents were charter members of the brand new Carpinteria Lions Club, an organization that stands 82 members strong today.

Hundreds of locals joined the club over the past 90 years, not only believing in the goals of Lionism–helping to prevent blindness and humanitarian efforts–but also the belief of serving our community to help make it a better place for generations to come.

Over these years, the club held numerous fundraisers and service projects. Lions donated well over $500,000 in the past 20 years, but more importantly, members contributed an estimated 35,000-plus hours of service for various projects.

The club’s long legacy of community involvement inlcudes the purchase of the first ambulance, planting trees on 7th and 8th streets, provided beach playground equipment the end of Linden, bought and installed lights at local tennis courts, installed the entrance signs to Carpinteria, sponsored Boy Scout Troop, erected the flag pole on Linden Avenue, contributed to and supported the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, Girls Inc. and Lions Scholarship Fund, the local chapter of FFA; held a local Blood Bank annual drive, conducted annual Vision Screening Program for CUSD, and many other activities.

To celebrate the milestone, the club held a 90th Anniversary dinner at the Lions Community Building last weekend. The Master of Ceremonies was District Governor Norm McDaniel and the guest speaker was Past International Director Bill Iannaccone.

One issue facing Carpinteria is its aging road infrastructure. State tax allotments meet only about half of the needs for maintenance and replacement. At a recent meeting of the Carpinteria Lions Club, President Clyde Freeman made a surprise recognition of Past President Fred Lemere, who joined the club on March 1, 1960. Lemere was Club President from 1970-71 and went on to serve as Zone and Region Chairman. For his dedicated service, the club honored him with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Lions Club President Clyde Freeman, Award in 2007. The club further right, recognized Past President Fred honored him with the distinction Lemere’s many years of service with a of life member of the club.

His many years of service have been quietly “behind the scenes.” Lemere’s many additional contributions to the community include serving on the Carpinteria Valley Water District Board for 17 years, with most of his tenure as president. He is a proud recipient of the Carpinterian of the Year award in 1980.

Carpinteria Troop 50 was granted special permission to tour Jameson Lake recently.

Located directly behind the mountain that decorates Carpinteria’s skyline, Jameson Lake serves the Montecito Water District with an arch dam and a multi-arch buttress dam. Scouts learned about the history of the dam, worked on advancement projects, and ate incredible food, thanks to part-time celebrity chef/part-time mountain man, Thom Main. The hike back to Carpinteria took the troop one mile over Alder Creek Trail and another 9 miles over Franklin Trail to Carpinteria High School. Assistant Scoutmaster John Thomas reports, “I am totally proud of our Scouts for having completed the journey!” Thomas said that the experience couldn’t have happened without the Montecito Water District’s support and Alan Prichard, the dam keeper, who gave the boys a tour of the dam.

World Dance for Humanity Shakes Up Morning Rotary

Carpinteria Morning Rotary hosted Janet Reineck, who spoke about her role with World Dance for Humanity and the work the organization does in Rwanda. Reineck founded World Dance in 2010, starting as a low-cost exercise class that grew to a nonprofit organization which helps support grassroots projects in Nepal, Kenya, Ghana, Liberia, Uganda and Rwanda. World Dance for Humanity is now helping over 8,000 people in 25 rural Rwandan cooperatives. World Dance participates in an annual fundraising “Thriller” experience, dancing to the iconic song, dressed in zombie costumes throughout the month of October. Mayor Shaw visits Troop 50

Carpinteria Mayor Fred Shaw came to Boy Scout Troop 50’s recent meeting to help scouts with their citizenship in the community merit badge. According to the troop, the mayor was very informative and quite inspiring in his presentation about what makes up the city, and what it takes to keep the it moving forward. He wanted to enliven the scouts’ civic pride and instill a sense of ownership of their part in the city’s future. Mayor Shaw added that the City of Carpinteria runs with only 32 employees and touched on the freeway expansion project, how the city is zoned and what it takes to plan a park for an eventual Eagle Scout service project. Mayor Shaw said that he hopes the city’s baton will be passed to some of these scouts someday.

Fernando’s parents, Cipriano and Huventina Ramirez, had moved from Texas with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911. The company put the family up on a farm near the Bates Ranch, from which Cipriano maintained the tracks and kept the line clear of rocks and other debris. Fernando was born in 1914 and started working for R.W. Bates as a young man.

Robbie Hutto, R.W.’s granddaughter, remembers the ranch foreman as a “wonderful man” whose hard work and kindness won him a special place in the Bates family. Fernando passed away in 1983 at age 68, but his widow lived to 95. According to Fernando’s daughter, R.W. was so generous that though the lot he’d given the Ramirezes had no home on it, he ensured that Fernando’s widow could remain in the POwDreLL ArChIVe family on the ranch untilunique her death.

GARDEN GOSSIP CHRIS & LISA CULLEN today, as i was looking out the window above my kitchen sink, i was reminded why having a garden is so important. my garden is full of life and beauty. it gives me pleasure every time i look out a window or go out of doors. All is lush, green and quiet. the sound of water sings in the background from the two fountains and birds join in completing my garden concerto. A garden, a landscape, gives one an opportunity to create a world all one’s own.

Welcome to my world

i am proud of the fact that i live in my own world, and welcome you to join me. i refuse to watch “the news” or read “newspapers” (notable exception being Coastal View News). i don’t enjoy being hammered day and night with bad news and wonder why anyone listens. i concentrate on what i can do to improve my community and my environment. Accuse me of being a pollyanna; i don’t mind. my theory is if we all were to ignore the evil in the world and instead concentrate solely on the good, the evil would fade away. You may consider this to be an extremely flawed way of looking at life.

I, however, have more selfish reasons for ignoring bad news.

Beauty, happiness and doing good in the world

Landscape design and gardening is all about creating beauty and happiness, and if i am grumpy and upset, i have a hard time doing that. So, i chose to focus on the good. And there is lots of good in the world and lots of good people, too. take a look around you; most of the people you know are lovely individuals, intent on doing good. Carpinteria is full of them. there’s donny Risdon, who keeps our cars moving, the girls behind porch, who keep us in beautiful home goods. how about the folks at Calibressan who handle our chocolate fix? There are all the orchid growers who keep us blooming.

And, on the subject of nurseries, there are too many nurseries to name, from Abe’s to Norman’s, island View and everyone in between.

there is the Farm Cart and tom Shepherd, Red hen Cannery, Lucky Llama, island, brewLAb and Rincon and breweries, Sly and all the other folks who keep us well fed and hydrated. how about everyone at Coastal View News who recognizes and applauds the local accomplishments of one and all? there’s the boys & Girls Club, school teachers and nonprofits who work ceaselessly for the better good. but, if we talk about Carpinteria and all the folks doing good, we can’t leave out the Van Wingerden family. From Nadia’s chickens to John and Walter’s flowers, I am a huge fan of the entire family, having had the pleasure of meeting many of them. i apologize to all i failed to mention, however, the point is that there is much more good in the world than bad and if you take a look around you’ll see what i mean.

What does all this have to do with gardening? I think you already know the answer to that question.

Wolves of the sea

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham If I had a bucket list, this would be near the top: kayaking across the Santa Barbara Channel and being surrounded by orcas. There’s something about that borderland between man and beast that leaves some wondering how close is too close? From a kayak, I would be sideby-side with one of the most intelligent species on the planet. I have six channel crossings under my belt, and every time I wonder when my chance will come. Next time. If and when it occurs, I predict my heart will be racing but on the outside I’ll be utterly calm.

Earlier in the month, I got a decent sighting from the Island Packer ferry.

We were beyond the oil platforms where ocean depths reach 800-to-900-feet. In the distance, spouts popped like champagne corks, and then a big tail fluke revealed a white underbelly before a deep dive. It was thrilling for sure—it’s rare for orcas to be spotted in the channel. For over 20 years I’ve been paddling around the islands, and this was the seventh time I’ve seen them.

Every time I board the Island Packers boat, it’s in the back of my mind. Will we see them? Sightings are so fleeting and unpredictable, especially when we’re talking about a transient pod of orcas.

Resident orcas and transients are considered distinct. Transients are known as the wolves of the sea. They swim so fast, plowing through the open ocean like it’s nothing. Constantly on the move, they hunt for every marine mammal in the ocean. Seals and sea lions, whales,

Transient orcas are a rare and special treat to come across in the Santa Barbara Channel. Graham bumped into several aboard an Island Packers boat this fall. dolphins and porpoises are all on the menu—white sharks too. Orcas are the apex predators of the ocean. No one else is even remotely close.

If I had a choice of being a resident or transient orca, I’d be a transient. Residents are boring. They’re homebodies sticking to a particular region. Transients don’t mess around. They are in constant motion ranging from Washington State, British Colombia and Alaska and then venturing down our way, especially during the southerly gray whale migration.

It’s a mystery as to why these two races evolved, but scientists believe the genetic gap spans over 100,000 years.

Physically the two are similar, and you probably couldn’t tell them apart swimming next to each other, but there are some differences. Most notably it’s their dorsal fins. The transients’ tend to be more steeple-shaped. Less noticeable is the grey patch located behind the sheer dorsal fin. It’s farther forward on the fastmoving transients.

The most distinct differences are behavior and food preferences. Residents hang their hats on fish, especially salmon.

You can bank on where those residents will park themselves. If you’re a salmon and it’s time to spawn you better have eyes in the back of your head. Also distinct are the transient’s impressive dorsal fins. They are steep and tall. The two big males seen from the Island Packers boat both sported dorsal fins in the 5- to 6-foot-tall range.

Transient orcas are way more entertaining. I’ve seen them hunt a pod of common dolphin numbering at least 3,000. It was like watching lions in Southern Africa hunt a herd of zebra and wildebeest. There was lots of drama. Any marine mammal is fair game. It doesn’t matter what it is. Sometimes a hunt will take mere minutes. Other times, the orcas may stick to it for several hours.

When I saw them hunting common dolphin, the pod of five orcas dove really deep and came up beneath their prey.

Dolphins are fast, but I didn’t realize how fast until that day when they eluded the apex predator of all the world’s oceans.

When I saw orcas earlier this month it was difficult to say what they were after.

As the Island Packer boat came to a halt, they were all around, and so was a bewildered young sea lion that appeared like it was in distress. It was surrounded. Two big males were around with at least another eight orcas in the vicinity. It didn’t look good for the sea lion.

That was it. We had to get to Santa Cruz Island, looming on the southerly horizon, and after that hors d’oeuvres of a sea lion, those transient orcas continued steaming fiercely toward the west.

Allie Kaday Jefferies and William A. Edwards IV were married on June 3, 2017 in Haleiwa, Oahu. The bride’s parents are Jon and Jacqui Jefferies of Chicago. The groom’s parents are William and Jessica Edwards of Carpinteria. Carpinterians Bud Lelande and Dylan Smith were best man and groomsman, respectively. The flower girls were Sienna Lelande from Carpinteria and Luci Guci the dog, and Mr. Wiggles the dog was the ring bearer. After the Hawaiian nuptials, the couple held a second wedding on Sept. 3 in Addison, Ill. They honeymooned in Tahiti. Jefferies is a dental hygienist, and Edwards is a surf photographer.
