For 14 years, Carpinteria Middle Schoolers have participated in oceanrecreation programs with the city of Carpinteria. Funded by grants to teach ocean safety, the city’s ocean aquatics coordinator Matt Simon trains students in ocean recreation, fitness, kelp forest ecosystems and organisms, the salt marsh, local weather and oceanography.

With a yearly application, the state of California Department of Boating and Waterways awards the city a grant to teach boating safety. “We try to expose up to 300 youth and adults to a four-hour kayak experience each year that includes pertinent safety information, such as the importance of life vests, how to safely navigate near shore and how to understand wind and waves,” explained Matt Roberts, Carpinteria’s Director of Parks and Recreation.

Roberts pursued construction of the Ash Avenue restrooms and boathouse, and the boathouse made the city eligible for the boating safety grants. “We have such great waters and marine life in our local nearshore zone,” Roberts said. “Native Americans here were mariners,” he pointed out, referring to the Chumash people and their distinctive sewn-plank canoes called tomols. As many people know, Carpinteria was given its current name by members of the Spanish Portola expedition, who observed Chumash “carpenters” building boats. Dog lost in industrial park, found on Bluffs

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Dotti the dog was with her dogsitter in the warehouses of Joah Brand, the local fashion company, when she “pulled a Houdini and escaped,” according to Brad Urani, a Procore software engineer and friend of Dotti’s dogsitter. “She just went missing,” reported Urani, “We’re not sure how.

She’s some kind of magic dog.”

At once, Dotti’s human-friends embarked on a multi-staged dog hunt, enlisting two dozen people including several five-year-olds. For hours, the search party explored Carpinteria’s neighborhoods and open spaces by scooter, bike, jeep and motorcycle. As dusk neared on Saturday night, Dotti’s whereabouts remained a mystery. “The night ended in disappointment, several of the five-year-olds cried,” said Urani.

As the hours turned to a day, Dotti’s searchers hung flyers at her favorite coffee shops and telephone poles throughout town and they ramped up their sustained intensive social media campaign. As hope waned, they tried to enlist local celebrities to tweet Dotti’s picture. (No celebrities accepted the request.)

Finally, late Sunday afternoon, when finding Dotti seemed like beating the wind, joggers found her along the Carpinteria Bluffs. She was scared and tired.

The joggers, including Nicole Priester, connected with the search party and 32 hours after her escape from the Joah warehouses, Dotti was safe and in her grandmother Mara Jaffe’s arms.

BRIEFLY Water District commemorates Special Districts Week

The Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) is set to approve a resolution at its Sept. 25 meeting to commemorates Special Districts Week.

Special Districts Week, Sept. 22 to 28, was established by the State Legislature earlier this year with bi-partisan approval of Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 89.

ACR 89 was sponsored by the California Special Districts Association (CSDA), which is a statewide association representing over 1,000 special districts and affiliate organizations throughout the state. Special districts are local government entities created by a community’s residents to provide specialized services and infrastructure.

“Special Districts provide services for the Carpinteria Valley including water, sewer and fire protection with dedication and reliability. We appreciate the staff at these organizations for their commitment to service,” said Bob McDonald, general manager of the Carpinteria Valley Water District.

CSDA’s CEO Neil McCormick added, “Special Districts are formed by residents to provide essential services that they want and need at the local level. They provide an opportunity to have local control while enhancing services that make communities thrive and survive.”

Obituaries

Mary Joyce Blair 8/27/1930 – 9/21/2019

Mary Joyce Blair, 89, peacefully passed away on Sept. 21, 2019, at home surrounded by family. She was born to Joseph and Gladys Brady in Heidelberg, Mississippi. Mary moved to Ventura in 1949 and worked as a secretary. She married Darrell Blair in 1951 and they raised their twin daughters. She worked with Darrell in their electrical contracting business and later worked for Jostens until retirement.

Mary Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Gladys Brady; her husband, Darrell Blair; son, Kenneth Blair; sister, Jonell Cooley; and brothers, Kinnard Brady and Samuel Brady.

She is survived by her daughters, Becky Subriar (Phillip), Betty Atanasu (Deryl); sisters, Gretchen Kays (Jack) and Margaret Valles; grandchildren, Kristine Walton (Tony), Denise Ferguson (Eric), Rickson Subriar, April Russell (Rick); great-grandchildren, Aspyn Walton, Lana Ferguson, Brady Ferguson, Jack Ferguson; and nephew, Chris Nauenburg.

Mary Joyce loved being with her family and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed being with friends Nancy, Charlotte and Angie, along with her friends from Jostens and Lemonwood and Tommy Moreno. She also loved travel, bowling and “Dancing with the Stars.”

The family is grateful for the care and kindness of Dr. Arthur Inoshita and the staff at Trusted Hospice.

A memorial service will take place at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, in Ventura, on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, at 1 p.m.

Madaline Villa-Sanchez 9/30/1944 – 9/19/2019

On Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, our beloved mother, Madaline, passed into the Lord’s hands and her suffering ended.

She was born in Carpinteria on Sept. 30, 1944. All those who knew her understood her profound love of the Lord and how through her suffering, she understood the suffering of others. As Pope Benedict stated, “The cross reminds us that there is no true love without suffering, there is no gift of life without pain.” Our mother understood this all too well and endured her suffering with true love.

There are few ardent believers in God’s Grace and our mother was one of them.

She offered up her suffering to God and offered reassurances to those around her that if you trust in the Lord, He will lift you up.

Madaline is survived by her husband, José Sanchez; her sons, Anthony and Randy Villa (wife Eden); daughter in law, Jeniffer; and her various beloved grandchildren, Ariel, Abigail, Albert III, Andrew, Elizabeth, Henry, Isabella, Jessa, Jacob, Nolan, Rebecca and great granddaughter, Emilia.

Madaline was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Villa Sr., and her son, Albert Villa Jr. and daughter, Shirley Anne Villa.

Iris Elise Topham

Iris Elise Topham, 63, of Carpinteria passed away on Sept. 21, 2019.

Iris was born and raised in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1976. She loved being near the beach and living in Carpinteria. Some of her favorite things were to shop for a bargain at thrift stores and gardening.

She is survived by her husband Martin, her son Brian Mohr, her mother and extended family in Germany.

Committee bands together

To the residents of our mobile home parks: About a year ago a group of concerned citizens formed a committee we named the Carpinteria Rent Stabilization Ordinance Action Committee or COAC. The mission of this committee is to preserve and protect our local rent stabilization ordinance (RSO) through education, guidance and other legal means by informing homeowners, prospective homeowners and realtors of their rights.

Over the years, due to the circumvention by park owners and the indifference and neglect by both the city and the Rent Stabilization Board, the ordinance has become meaningless in maintaining rent control for a couple of our parks.

We want to bring back into public awareness the existence and importance of the ordinance. Through negotiations with one park owner, we were able to negotiate a reduction of the high rents that were not under rent control by 15 percent, and to amend their lease agreements “to mirror” the RSO while not affecting those base rents currently under the RSO. We also negotiated a three-year rent freeze and a rate increase after that time by the ordinance.

Higher rate payers at Sandpiper received an addendum package explaining this.

Although the addendum may seem confusing at first, it was approved by our attorney Bruce Stanton, a leading mobile home park attorney retained by us to help in the negotiations. There are many other facets to the way rents and leases are established by park owners that were discussed but are too lengthy to be discoursed here. To fully understand the rate reduction, you should attend one of several general meetings for Sandpiper residents only explaining the addendum.

At those meetings, members of COAC will be present to answer questions. Our work will continue into the next phase where the park owners will pursue changing those under the RSO.

“Settled science” and “scientific consensus” are not scientific, but political, terms. When you hear those phrases from the media or a scientist, they are politically motivated—and that’s OK, just don’t confuse it with science.

Science is not a body of knowledge, it is a method of inquiry. As a method of inquiry, it is never settled, that is why the inquiry is called theory, or hypothesis. In 1970s scientists predicted an ice age. A 1974 Time magazine article, “Another Ice Age?” painted a bleak picture: “When meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe, they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing.”

In the mid 1960s when my husband graduated from UCLA with a degree in geology, if you mentioned theory of plate tectonics, your professor would fail you. Stifling inquiry is nothing new in academic, scientific or political communities—continents move, they are uplifted and subducted and the climate changes.

How many livelihoods are you willing to destroy when you only hear one side of the discussion? If you really want to know what the true issues are you can find them with a little research, but if you want to just accept what Bill Nye the Science Guy says, that’s OK too. But remember, Bill is a mechanical engineer, not a scientist— don’t get the two confused.

Watching the brilliant 16-year old Greta Thunberg speak to Congress last week about climate change sure stands in contrast to Sanderson Smith’s letter, “The Dems have it wrong,” in last week’s Coastal View News (Vol. 35, No. 52). Smith’s condescending tone regarding Al Gore’s 10-year projection was off the mark, as Gore never said we were “doomed,” but that we faced a probable irreversible warming pattern if action wasn’t taken, and the last 10 years is evidence Gore was more in tune with the science than most.

Thunberg told us, “I don’t want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the scientists.” That is one of the wisest things I have heard in a long time, and it’s unfortunate some are blinded by their lack of understanding rather than offering some real contribution to the fight.

Compassion for all living things

Like many others, I always thought of farm animals as “food on the hoof.”

But, after watching the deeply moving film “Okja” on Netflix, I realized that a farm animal is much like our family dog, fully deserving of compassion and respect. Theologians have long debated whether there is life after death, but for farmed animals, there is no life before death. Recent undercover investigations showed male baby chicks suffocated in plastic garbage bags or ground to death in large macerators, pigs clobbered by metal pipes and hung to die, and cows skinned and dismembered while still conscious.

Last week, I read of an international observance of World Day for Farmed Animals on Oct. 2 (Gandhi’s birthday), to expose and memorialize the global abuse and slaughter of billions of animals for food. A “Be on the Lookout” notice was put out regarding three females passing counterfeit money in order to pay for gift cards at a supermarket in Goleta. A short while later, CHP advised they were following the suspected vehicle in the “BOL” notice.

A high-risk traffic stop was made in the parking lot at the Bluffs. Three females matching the description were taken into custody. Goleta units sent a photo of the suspects from a surveillance video, and all three were positively identified. Upon confirmation, several items including counterfeit money and gift cards were recovered from the vehicle.

City grapples with state reqs for affordable housing, launches public art pilot

On the heels of the state of California’s affordable housing legislation, including new laws that went into effect in January 2019 streamlining approval of accessory dwelling units, the city of Carpinteria faces a familiar challenge: how to follow statewide requirements without giving up local character. City Council took a cautious first step at Monday’s meeting, Sept. 23, voting unanimously to “harmonize” development fees and regulations with state law, while reserving their intention to prioritize Coastal Commission guidelines and “our own standards.”

The city currently has strict regulations for ADUs (also called secondary dwelling units, granny flats and in-law cottages).

To build a permitted ADU, a Carpinteria homeowner must receive Architectural Review Board approval, keep square footage below maximums proportional to the size of the lot and primary dwelling, and have one covered parking spot for each bedroom.

The state of California, however, seeks to alleviate the statewide housing crisis with new laws that fast-track ADU permits by requiring that all eligible applications be approved within 120 days; standardizing the size maximum at 1,200 sq. ft., and prohibiting parking requirements on properties within a half-mile of public transportation (which in Carpinteria, as Councilmember Fred Shaw remarked, is

just about everywhere).

Further affordable housing legislation continues to make its way through the state assembly, with a recently passed bill on ADUs currently awaiting the governor’s signature.

Councilmembers aired several concerns, including parking and over development of residential neighborhoods.

Shaw noted that waiving the covered parking requirement would make for a public parking problem on already congested corridors including the beach neighborhood.

“I’m all for doing anything we can to provide ADUs, but at the same time respecting our local development standards,” said Vice Mayor Al Clark.

Disagreeing on principal and pragmatics, Councilmember Gregg Carty said, “I can see it working in some cases but it’s sad to me that it seems like its undermining what our community has fought for, for so long… And somebody else telling us what to do from somewhere else. I’m just not comfortable with that. I know that our current SDU regulations could use some updating, but to me this is extreme.”

A handful of residents spoke in support of city staff’s recommendation to streamline city codes with state laws, including Jim Taylor of the Carpinteria Valley Association who stated: “I think this is entirely in line with the goals of Carpinteria and Carpinteria’s housing element. Secondary units represent an

The grant will fund the purchase and installation of vehicle exhaust source-capture systems for the fire stations in Carpinteria and Summerland.

The grant-funded systems will cut 100 percent of the contaminants emitted by starting, running and backing the fire apparatus in the fire station engine bays, and will be a critical addition to CSFD’s Firefighter Health and Safety program.

“I am thrilled that our CarpinteriaSummerland Fire Department has been awarded this grant funding that will help keep our firefighters safe while they protect our community,” said U.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal. “This federal funding will have a lasting positive impact on our district, and I will continue doing all I can in Congress to support our brave firefighters and ensure they have the resources they need.”

According to the International Association of Firefighters, over 50 percent of the firefighters named on the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Wall of Honor died from cancer. CSFD’s goal is to drastically reduce risks contributing to this unacceptable cancer rate and other work associated illnesses for the benefit of firefighters and the community they serve.

By removing all exhaust from the fire station engine bays this grant-funded equipment will prevent vehicle exhaust in the fire station from contaminating the firefighters, their protective clothing, their tools and equipment, and the stations themselves, as well as the public that often visit the stations. This, in turn, will cut cross-contamination when firefighters make contact with community members during calls and other interactions.

The total program cost is estimated at $74,000, with the grant covering 95 percent of the expenditures.

The city must take action to comply with state law, but it can potentially make a case to prioritize Coastal Commission development guidelines, explained Community Development Director Steve Goggia. “We might be able to carve things out, like prohibiting coastal access,” said Goggia, “We might be able to take variation from what the state is requiring.”

A motion to direct staff to draft revised permit regulations for ADUs consistent with state law, Coastal Commission guidelines and city standards was approved 5-0.

Public arts pilot program

Carpinteria City Council unanimously approved a public art installation of large photographs by Carpinteria-based artist Patricia Houghton-Clarke, paving the way for an Art in Public Places program in Carpinteria. Houghton-Clarke’s photoportraits, “Facing Ourselves,” will serve as a public arts pilot for the city, which also approved conducting preliminary research towards developing a long-term public arts program as part of the city’s 2020 Work Plan.

“Facing Ourselves” is a collaboration between Houghton-Clarke, Mike Lazaro and the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center and will be on exhibit at Seal Fountain Plaza from Oct. 18 through Nov. 5. The project explores issues of immigration and community through large-scale portraits of community members.

For 30 years, fashionable fans have flocked to this boutique to shop its latest clothing selections. Cotton Co.’s distinct style grabs hold and transforms shoppers into customers for life.

It’s no surprise that a key to success has been creating a joyful experience for all who enter the shop at 5025 Wullbrandt Way. “The Carpinteria Cotton Co. is such a welcoming place,” owner Janet Boyle said. “We consider our customers our good friends and neighbors because we share a common demographic, dressing concerns and challenges, but we do it with good humor and aplomb.”

The shop itself was established in 1989, but Boyle didn’t take the reins until years later. She purchased the shop from a friend (who coincidentally was her neighbor in high school), when the previous owner’s husband was relocated to Palm Desert for work.

You could say running a small business runs in Boyle’s family. “Growing up my family owned and operated a very successful Santa Barbara restaurant,” Boyle said. “My sister, Debbie, is still in the restaurant business, and owns The Montecito Coffee Shop.” In her 20s, Boyle ventured out on her own to run the Santa Barbara knitting store In Stitches, once located in the historic La Arcada Courtyard. Later, Boyle went on to work as the director of retail operations at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

In that role, Boyle also oversaw special exhibit stores and served as coordinator for the museum’s annual Folk and Tribal Arts Marketplace.

Carpinterians demand action against climate change On Friday, Sept. 20, people around the world joined together to demand action from global leaders to combat climate change. The demonstrations came days before the U.N.’s climate change meetings in New York. In Carpinteria, demonstrators met at Peace Corner at the intersection of Carpinteria and Linden avenues to hold handmade signs and energize passersby with their message. While demonstrators held a consistent presence throughout the day, their numbers ebbed and flowed, with more than 20 in some of the morning hours and late afternoon.

Canalino special education teacher Madeline Kimlin demonstrated alongside her partner Jesse Resnick, both 29. Kimlin had taken off work to protest because although she doesn’t have kids, “I’m doing it for my students’ future,” she said.

Resnick, who works at the Apiary, said he was there in solidarity with young people who were striking in protest in over 150 countries. An “all-time record high global GDP means (an) all-time record high global temperature,” said Resnick.

Hickey brings students safely to school for 36-years running

Crossing guard Mike Hickey is an integral part of each school day for hundreds of Canalino Elementary students and parents. Lumbering into the crosswalk with his familiar refrain of “Come on down!”

Hickey guides groups of pedestrians across the busy Linden Avenue entrance, keeping morning commuter traffic at a respectful distance with his reflective vest and his stop sign held aloft.

Watching out for students at various crossings around town for the past 36-years, Hickey, a fifth-generation Carpinterian, has consistently served his community while managing the effects of Cerebral Palsy. He says he never let the disease stop him from doing what he wanted to do, including managing the sports equipment for Carpinteria High School and Santa Barbara City College teams in his student years. “I was one of the only students to letter in every sport in high school,” Hickey pointed out, a distinction he earned by helping the Warriors across the entire sportscalendar year.

Earlier in his school career Hickey was assigned to special education, which meant travelling to Santa Barbara for class each day as Carpinteria didn’t offer those services. But by the time he started ninth grade, Hickey was able to remain in his hometown and he graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1980. He shared that

he’d taken his share of knocks from kids who teased him growing up, even pushing him down. “I’ve been called every cuss word you can think of,” Hickey admitted, but also pointed out that some of those kids must have been jealous because of the many friendships he had with female students.

Ever a sports enthusiast, Hickey’s favorite teams are the Green Bay Packers in football, the LA Lakers in basketball and the Dodgers in baseball, whom he catches on-screen sometimes at PizzaMan Dan’s, as the team’s games are blacked-out on television in this area. He gets around in a deluxe electric cart, often checking the ocean conditions at the bottom of Linden Avenue. A sticker on the back reads, “Got Mike?” And fortunately, for Carpinteria, the answer is affirmative.

The tropics come to Carpinteria at Girls Inc. gala

The sparkling waters of the Channel Islands can be seen as the northern-most edge of the South Pacific—the Santa Ynez but a chaparral-covered mountain range along the Pacific Rim. For attendees of An Evening in Bloom, the annual Girls Inc. fundraiser on the Foothill Road campus, the tropical-Pacific influence was everywhere to be found: from orchid leis, to tropical prints and a stunning array of greenery, flowers and fronds, along with John Wullbrandt’s mural of an ancient Hawaiian forest set up behind the stage.

The gala was held in honor of the late Ann Garcelon, writer and strong advocate for Girls Inc. A full meal and open bars kept the evening festive and the auction bidding was competitive, all in support of the mission at Girl’s Inc. to help Carpinteria girls be strong, smart and bold.

Volunteers pitch-in for clean beaches PHOtOS By ROBIn KARLSSOn

Saturday, Sept. 21, was International Coastal Cleanup Day, organized by the Ocean Conservancy. Thousands of people across the state of California participated by going to their favorite beach, lake and river places to pick up any trash they could find. Unfortunately, there is good trash-hunting every day of the year, and Saturday was no different.

In Santa Barbara County, volunteers fanned out to clean beaches from Jalama in north-county, out to Yellow Banks on Santa Cruz Island and to Rincon/Bates Beach at the Ventura County line. Hauling items as diverse as plastic toys, tires, batteries and underwear, 1,150 beach cleaners took more than 5,050 pounds of trash off 41 miles of county beaches.

The top-10 items found between 1988 and 2017 were (from first-to-last): cigarettes and butts/filters; food wrappers/ containers; caps/lids; bags (paper and plastic); cups, plates and utensils; straws and stirrers; glass bottles; plastic bottles; cans; and construction materials.

Warriors hampered by turnovers in CCL opening

Five turnovers by the Carpinteria High School football team proved too much to overcome for the Warriors in the Citrus Coast League (CCL) opener last Friday, Sept. 20, at Valley Memorial Stadium.

The Nordhoff Rangers registered a 45-7 win over the Carpinteria Warriors. The loss drops Carpinteria to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in league play, while Nordhoff improves to 3-2 and 1-0 in league.

Unable to move the ball after receiving the game’s opening kickoff, the home team was forced to punt, giving the Rangers good field position on the Warrior 49yard line. Nordhoff running back Korey Stevens then ran for 29 yards to the 20.

Quarterback Leeram Stoneman punctuated the drive with a five-yard touchdown run, and the visitors were up 7-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter.

Following another Carpinteria threeand-out, the Rangers began their next possession on their own 35. Nordhoff worked its way into Warrior territory again, as Stoneman hurled the ball toward the end zone. This time the Warriors came up big defensively, as Diego Hernandez’ leaping interception in the end zone thwarted the drive.

Carpinteria returned the favor though by fumbling the ball back to the Rangers on their own 15. With a combination of penalties and good pass coverage, the defense once again was able to keep Nordhoff off the scoreboard and the Warriors took over at their own 11. “We played well defensively, but we’re coming out and it’s our execution (on offense),” explained Warriors coach Mario Robinson.

“It’s mental errors right now, and I don’t know how to fix that,” said the first-year coach of his team’s first half performance.

The Rangers took their 7-0 lead into the second quarter and ended up scoring on the first play of the period on a five-

yard run by Stevens making it 14-0.

The score remained the same until the final minute of the half when Nordhoff came up with a big play as Stonemen connected with Jake Palmer on a slant pattern, which gave Palmer a 68-yard run for the score.

The Warriors trailed 21-0 and the Rangers weren’t finished yet. Taking over at the Carpinteria 35 after another Warrior fumble, Nordhoff ended the short drive with a 10-yard touchdown run by Stevens to take a 28-0 lead into the half. “We just have to get better,

mentally focus, dig deep and get some points on the board,” said Robinson.

The Rangers’ running game took over in the second half, capping off a 55-yard drive after receiving the kickoff with a two-yard touchdown run by Eli Dvortczak, bringing the score to 35-0.

Carpinteria engineered a nice drive of their own, going 60 yards with the key play being quarterback Diego Mendez’s 35-yard run. They got on the scoreboard on a two-yard run by Will Collins to make it 35-7 with 5:35 left in the third quarter. Mendez led the Warriors in

rushing with 39 yards on nine carries and also completed 10 of 19 passes for 88 yards. Caleb Nangle hauled in three receptions for 18 yards to lead the team in catches.

Nordhoff added another touchdown in the third, making the score 42-7 and a 22-yard field goal by Palmer in the fourth rounded out the scoring. Carpinteria will go on the road for the first time this year, taking on CCL opponent Fillmore with the kickoff tomorrow night, Sept.

September 17 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team got off to a good start in a 3-1 Citrus Coast League victory over Malibu. Libero Number-14 Emily Montoya helped the Warriors with 26 digs and three aces. Outside hitter Number-two Malia Shellabarger provided 11 kills and Sadie Mead Number-nine outside hitter yielded another 11 kills for Carpinteria. “Setter Number-seven Marlene Sanchez is getting better by the day, she had a record-high 31 assists,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Opposite Number-eight Sarah Weitzman ended with 10 kills. Carpinteria’s overall record is 4-4 and their league record is 1-1.

September 19 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team faced the Rangers of Nordhoff, falling in three sets in Ojai. Carpinteria outside hitter Numbertwo Malia Shellabarger gave the Warriors four kills. “Sadie Mead, Number-nine swung away helping with another five kills for Carpinteria,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Setter, Number-seven Marlene Sanchez had 20 assists for the evening.

Opposite Number-eight Sarah Weitzman gained seven kills. The Warriors overall record is 4-5, 1-2 in the Citrus Coast League.

September 21 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team hosted the Carpinteria Classic Girls Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, extending the annual event’s lifespan for more than two decades. Twelve teams descended on Warriors Gym and Middle School gymnasiums for eight hours of play. A number of teams traveled considerable distances to participate in the tournament, including last year’s tournament champion, the Calabasas Coyotes. The Chaminade Eagles of West Hills, the Providence Pioneers of Burbank and the Azusa Aztecs were also among the competitors.

“Special thanks to coach Dino Garcia’s student athletes that served as scorekeepers and lines judges, and a tip of the cap to hosts coach Bret Shellabarger and Mickey and Sue Caughey for extending a touch of Warrior class to all of the participants and their families,” said Carpinteria High School Athletic Director Pat Cooney in his weekly report. “The tournament is a source of ‘warrior pride’ from ticket taker Dan Cordero to the professional services of Jesus Zamora and Charles Bryant,” added Cooney.

When the action concluded, the 2018 CIF-SS finalist Nordhoff Rangers emerged as 2019 Carpinteria Classic Champions when they defeated Providence in the Gold Division final. In the Silver Division final, Carpinteria was narrowly defeated by the Conquistadores of Cabrillo. The Silver Division was held on the hardwood at Carpinteria Middle School which will become the Warriors “home gym away from home” when Measure U improvements begin in the CHS gym this coming February.

September 18 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team traveled up to Ojai today and beat Villanova in a non-league match, 14-4. September 19 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a nonleague match against Viewpoint losing in games 9-9 (74-63). “We had a great day in singles, winning seven of nine sets with Emma Lapidus and Sydney Endow sweeping their matches,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Zahra Porinsh went 1-2 on the day in her first singles action of the year. In doubles, Jeannette Carrillo/Mercy Torres went 2-1. “Even in the set they lost, they were competitive,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 3-4 overall and will start Citrus Coast League play this week.

September 17 – The Cate School girls tennis team opened their 2019 season account with a 10-8 win over Santa Barbara. Senior Grace Fuss was a perfect 18-0 in games across her three sets of play, while the senior/junior duo of Carol Cai and Fritze Mayer won theirs 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. Aminah Hill chipped in two 6-2 sets, before dropping her final set 6-4 against SBHS’s Number-one singles player Sophia Ostravany. The 10th and match-clinching set was won by sophomores Julianna Forry and Maesa Vonkusolkit, who were both making their varsity debuts on the day. “The 6-4 win was all the more impressive having come against the top SBHS team of Hannah Mendez and Natalie Brewer, said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. “Cate overcame SBHS, a school ten times its size, with dominant play at the top singles and doubles positions,” added Thorpe.

September 20 – The Cate School girls tennis team overcame a 2-4 start in the first round of play to defeat Dos Pueblos, 10-8. Cate struck first with wins from Grace Fuss at Number-one singles and Carol Cai/Fritze Mayer at Number-one doubles, but that would be it for the Rams in round one. Dos Pueblos fielded wins at Number-two and Number-three doubles, and Alessa Sommer came from 2-3 down to win the next four games against Rams sophomore Aminah Hill. “Cate quickly righted the ship in the second round, winning the next three sets and pulling even at 6-6 by the end of the second round, thanks to strong play from senior Mia Foster and sophomore Ashi Kamra at the Number-two position,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe. “I think it’s been 10 years since we last played DP, and I remember the last one not going so well for us, so this was a good win,” explained Thorpe. Cate, now 2-0 on the season, will open Tri-Valley League regular season play at home against La Reina at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24th.

September 24 – The Cate School girls tennis team opened Tri-Valley League regular season play with a perfect performance against La Reina, winning 18-0. The Cate team won despite resting their senior captains Grace Fuss and Carol Cai. In singles, Aminah Hill started at Number-one, but was substituted out after a 6-0 victory in the first round. Madeline Vanica picked up the remaining two wins at the position, while Fritze Mayer and Yuki Kobayashi chipped in three sets each at Number-two and Number-three singles, respectively. In doubles, the pairing of senior Mia Foster and sophomore Ashi Kamra picked up where they left off last week against Dos Pueblos, with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3 victories at the Number-one spot. The doubles combinations of sophomores Julianny Forry/Maesa Vonkusolkit and freshman/sophomore tandem Ellie Tunnell/Emily May also swept their three rounds of play. Cate plays again Tuesday, Oct. 1 against league rival Thacher on Cate Mesa at 3:45 p.m.

September 19 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team competed in the first Citrus Coast League tournament of the year hosted by Hueneme on the Seabee Course in Port Hueneme. “The Warriors placed last but showed some serious improvement from the beginning of practice three weeks ago,” said Warriors coach Chris Cochrane. Nordhoff came in first with a score of 245, Santa Paula second at 296; followed by Fillmore with a 288; Hueneme at 299 and Carpinteria tallying 328. “Two of the four players (Tanya Sanchez and Paula Torres) picked up golf clubs for the first time three weeks ago and have been asked to play nine holes on regulation courses,” said Cochrane. Daisy Martinez one of two returning players led CHS with a 54 and Diana Higareda was second with a 58. The overall winner Hanna Ignacio of Nordhoff carded a 46, followed by teammate Ella Giuliani with a 48.

Boys water polo

September 17 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team fell to Buena by a score of 15-7. Warriors sophomore Coby Gonzalez notched three goals from his two-meter position, and fellow sophomore Zach Isaac was able to shut out the Bulldogs’ two-meter player in the second half. But, it wasn’t enough as Carpinteria dropped to 3-5 on the season.

September 20 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team dropped a non-league match to Camarillo by a score of 12-8. The Warriors fell behind and were unable to catch the Scorpions. Carpinteria travels to play Fillmore in a Citrus Coast League match this Friday, September 27th.

Cross country

September 20 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team ran in the Raider Invitational over the weekend. The top finishers for the Warriors included: Luke Nakasone who placed 53rd with a time of 18:04.11, David Celio who ended up in 69th place in 19:27.23 and Esteban Zapata who captured 74th in 19:43.57. In the Frosh/Soph Race, Hugo Alvarado finished 18th with a time of 18:18.43 and Steven Bengry took 51st with a time of 20:30.30 in the JV Race. For the Girls: Shayla Alvarez took 20th with a time of 20:19.87, Kate Cooney finished in 25th in 22:45.79, Taylor Classen took 46th in 26:43.9, Belen Herrera ended up in 49th in 24:18.48, Sydney

September 17 – The Cate School girls volleyball team went the distance to take down La Reina in five sets to go 2-0 in league. In the first set, Cate held the lead at 14-7, but unforced errors allowed La Reina back into the game to even the score at 17-17. The Rams couldn’t recover in time, dropping the first set, 25-20. Cate came back in the second set. “Contributing to the change in pace was junior Grace Johnson’s tough serving, and senior opposite Maya Blattberg who contributed six kills and sophomore outside hitter Elise Guerrand-Hermes followed up with four kills,” said Rams coach Greg Novak.

But, La Reina answered back with successful serving of their own in the third set.

“Senior outside hitter, Kenzie Davison stepped up to steady out the team in this set and throughout the rest of the night,” explained Novak. “Freshman outside hitter Gigi Geyer made a statement coming off the bench earning two kills and making some clean passes,” said Novak. The hitting was spread out as Blattberg delivered five kills and Guerrand-Hermes followed with three kills. “Defensively, Grace Blankenhorn class of ’20 scooped up nine digs which helped the setters Riley Borchardt class of ’21 and Maya Blattberg mix up the offense,” said Novak. “Behind the clutch serving of Grace Johnson and Charlotte Weis, Elise continued on her hitting streak with another down the line for 14-12 and eventual 15-12 match-winning point kill,” explained Novak.

September 21 – The Cate School cross country team had a successful morning at the Brentwood Small School Invitational with the girls emerging as champions and the boys placing third. The seven-team girls race kicked off the morning, and three miles later sophomore Anna DiSorbo crossed the line in first place with a time of 19:24, 35 seconds faster than her sophomore teammate Meena Baher whose second place time was 19:59. A third sophomore, Ella Gardner, was 10th in 21:53. Not far behind was the first of three Ram freshmen, Kendall Thorne who placed 13th in 22:17, followed

by Lylie Bechtel finishing 16th in 22:23 and Talia Tom in 21th with a time of 22:51. Returning sophomore Kennedy Simpson rounded out the scoring for Cate, finishing 23rd in 23:00. The seven Cate runners (all freshmen and sophomores) earned medals for finishing in the top 25, and Cate’s 33 points bested Sage Hill who took second with 48, Brentwood was third with 80. In the boys race, senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara ran and secured fifth place in 17:27. Sophomore Nick Patrick captured ninth place in 17:46. Freshman Harry McAdam nabbed Cate’s third medal with a 24th place finish in 19:01. Senior co-captain Dylan MacFarlane took 32nd in 19:36 and sophomore Jackson Molin finished 33rd in 19:37 in the Rams’ third place finish with 93 points, behind Crossroads’ 41 and New West Charter’s 77, in a field of 14 schools. The Rams next outing is their Tri-County Athletic Association (TCAA), league preview meet at El Camino Real Park in Ventura on Thursday, September 26th.

September 20 – The Cate School football team fell to Orcutt Academy by a score of 28-24 on the road. The Rams suffered their first loss of the year and will host Flintridge Prep in a non-league game on Cate Mesa this weekend. The kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m.

Booby bound on Santa Barbara Island CVN

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM I love surprises when Mother Earth serves them up. A few years ago when I kayaked from Santa Cruz Island to tiny Santa Barbara Island, I just wanted the 42-mile slog to be over.

In 2015, at 8 p.m. on a crisp, cool October evening, all I wanted was to see the 1-square-mile isle. In my blue Necky kayak in the open ocean for 17 hours, I really wanted to touch down on some wave-battered rock and feel the barnacles between thoroughly pruned toes. It had been 17 hours kayaking with another guide. The same guide I towed for the last six hours of the trip––the same guide who lost his paddle in the dark and, for the last 2.5 hours, I had towed, his kayak swinging uncontrollably, side-to-side and sometimes slinging past me in the northwest chop. It took all my strength, resolve and experience to keep me in check, and yet, I’d do it again.

Sutil Island is more of a massive rock than an islet, similar to something out of the first Indiana Jones movie—sheer volcanic rock faces that only seabirds could love. Forget about landing on it. Fortified with cheese grater-like barnacles, Sutil Island lays just an eighth of a mile south of Santa Barbara Island, exposed to every swell direction, all winds and always desolate.

It was all I saw in the dark on that moonlit night, swirling fog clinging to the islet like a certain seabird that now calls it home.

We made it safely to Santa Barbara Island. The seabird biologists stationed there helped us get our gear on the Landing Cove. It was approaching midnight.

Legs a little wobbly, lower back stiff, shoulders screaming, we slept soundly.

That inner clock though, it always kicks in around 4 a.m. At first light I was up and I made sure my paddling buddy heard me. I made him get up too. After all, I got him there. He had to put up with my photo needs, so we got back in our kayaks by 6:30 a.m. and paddled around the beachless isle.

After rounding towering Arch Point, guano-covered Shag Rock and then wave-battered Webster Point, we saw our beacon of hope from the previous night—Sutil Island. There was no denying its ominous north face. Something was different about it though, from previous excursions.

It was alive. There was movement of the avian variety. Dark wings flapped against its precarious, damp cliff face.

A bevy of brown boobies were hanging tough on the few perches available to them. At the time, anyone that knew something about these seafaring birds assumed they were just there for a visit due

They’ve extended their range northward since the 1990s, when they first migrated to the Coronado Islands of Baja California from the Gulf of California of Mexico.

This expansion of their range coincides with shifts in oceanic conditions with warmer waters and changes in prey availability.

All species of boobies are known for making spectacular plunging dives from heights of up to 50 feet to feed on bait fish.

They nest on islands, lay their eggs on the bare ground, utilizing sticks, rocks, bones, and vegetation for nesting material. During the winter they fan out to sea, always seeking their next meal.

Like a lot of other species worldwide, brown booby populations have declined due to loss of habitat on islands where introduced predators have reduced active nests. That’s not the case on Santa Barbara Island, an isolated, treeless haven offering undisturbed habitat and a pit-stop for an exhausted kayaker.

A Brown Booby soars over the SB Channel. to abnormally warm waters driven from south of Mexico. Things have changed a little now. Recently, Channel Islands National Park seabird biologists confirmed the first record of a brown booby chick from an active nest on Sutil Island.

The successful nest signifies a northward expansion of their known breeding range in the Gulf of California and along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The next closest current breeding colony is located on the Coronado Islands off Northern Baja California.

Once considered a rare visitor to the Channel Islands, Brown boobies were observed only 16 times in the 30 years between 1984 and 2014. They were first seen roosting in small numbers on Anacapa

and Santa Barbara Islands in 2013. There was a dramatic rise in their numbers in 2015 with over 170 individuals observed at Santa Barbara Island. Since that time, they have been seen consistently on both islands with fewer sightings occurring on Anacapa Island.

“Seabirds rely upon the rich marine resources and the isolation of these offshore islands to provide food and undisturbed nesting grounds safe from predators,” said Channel Islands National Park Superintendent Ethan McKinley. “With this successful brown booby nest, there are now 14 breeding seabirds that rely upon this vital habitat.”

Brown boobies are generally considered a tropical or subtropical bird.

In addition, the dressing is made with a flavorful blood orange olive oil and a pear-flavored white balsamic vinegar.

Add a touch of honey for sweetness, and fresh edible flowers from the garden for color, and you have a salad your friends and family will remember for many a moon.

Ingredients:

3-4 blood oranges (peeled and sliced 1/8inch thick) 3 fennel bulbs (sliced 1/8-inch thick) 3 avocados ½ cup blood orange olive oil ¼ cup D’Anjou white balsamic vinegar ¼ teaspoon organic honey ½ bunch Romaine lettuce (chopped) 4 pansy flowers (nasturtiums are a good substitute) 4 chilled salad plates

Trim the ends of each fennel bulb. Cut into quarters and remove the core from each quarter. Slice thinly (crosswise). Set aside.

Peel oranges. Trim off the extra pulp. Slice off ends and discard. Halve oranges from top to bottom and then slice into ¼-inch thick slices. Set aside.

Peel avocados and cut in half. Discard seed. Slice avocados into ¼-inch thick slices. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic and honey. Set dressing aside.

To serve, place a handful of lettuce on a chilled salad plate. Arrange oranges, fennel and avocados on top of lettuce.

Drizzle with a good tablespoon or more of dressing. Garnish with pansy flowers and serve while plates are still cold.
