Festival of Trees seeks tree sponsors

The Ninth Annual Festival of Trees, sponsored by the Carpinteria Lions Club, will begin Friday, Nov. 23, 2018. Net proceeds from the 16-day event at the old Austin’s Hardware building on Linden Avenue will benefit local non-profits. The Lions Club requests that local individuals, businesses, service organizations and non-profits participate in this event by sponsoring a tree. Each year, the participating sponsors decorate and adorn Christmas trees with gifts to be raffled. All Christmas trees are donated by the Carpinteria Lions Club and will be set-up inside the building ready for decorating. Spaces are limited. Organista to present Thomas Fire experience

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. the Carpinteria Woman’s Club will host a presentation by Matt Organista called “Scenes from the Thomas Fire.” Organista will tell the story of how he ended up on the front lines of the Thomas Fire and was able to capture and share valuable live video reports. The presentation is open to the public, guests are asked to bring a friend, a dish or a bottle to share.

IBC to hold boardswap and Tiki party

On Saturday, Nov. 3, Island Brewing Company will clear out the parking lot for the Second Annual Boardswap. “This is a great chance to clean out the garage and give those forgotten boards a new lease on life—and, who knows—perhaps find your next magic ride, while rubbing elbows with like-minded hydro dynamically inclined,” said IBC in an event release. “And perhaps have a beer.” The boardswap is slated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces are free and available on a first come, first serve basis. The boardswap is open to all sorts of boards and equipment (skate, snow, wetsuits, etc.). Following the boardswap there will be a Tiki party with Karlin Ladera playing live music, Tiki mug beer specials, a Hawaiian shirt contest, aloha food and art by John Wullbrandt.

Houghton Clarke promotes humane treatment of migrants through public art “Facing Ourselves” opens in Italy

BY DEBRA HERRICK On Oct. 28, the City of Martignano, Italy, inaugurated an expansive public art installation, “Facing Ourselves,” by Carpinteria-based artist Patricia Houghton Clarke.

In Clarke’s monumental photographic installation, oversized portraits of people from different parts of the world are pasted on the side of buildings like billboards or installed on giant signposts in the street. Martignano is a small village in the south of Italy, population 1,700.

“As we move into more and more challenging times, with worldwide migration at the forefront,” said Clarke, “we need to focus time and attention on merging cultures and how to create sustainable and humane communities for the future.”

Since 2016, Clarke has traveled to Italy and London photographing portraits for “Facing Ourselves,” while also collaborating with Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker Marisa Venegas on a documentary film. Both projects focus on refugees, immigrants and those who advocate for them and their communities. Clarke hopes to give voice to those who have lost everything, endured tremendous h ardships, and have been forced to leave their homes.

“What do these people look like?” asked Clarke, “Do we see ourselves in them? Can we face ourselves—and each other?”

The project was inspired by experiences that Clarke had in 2011 while she was an artist in residence in a small village in Italy. “Historically migrants themselves, between 1876 and the early 1980s more than 26 million Italians migrated to the United States, northern Europe and other parts of the globe,” said Clarke. “The villagers’ acceptance of ‘others’ comes from a place deep within themselves, their families and their own migratory history—saying, ‘We know what it’s like to carry a suitcase.’”

The next phase of “Facing Ourselves” expands its scope by collaborating with other organizations, including Waging Peace UK, Indivisible Carpinteria and the Carpinteria Arts Center.

The Italian exhibition is funded in part by donations from citizens of Santa Barbara County, who are also featured in the show. To date, Clarke has been invited by

“Facing Ourselves” has been twice accepted into the final competition for a Guggenheim Fellowship. The next round of winners will be announced in the spring of 2019. In October 2018, “Facing Ourselves” won the international Julia Margaret Cameron Honorable Mention Award for Human Rights, and several of the photographs will be exhibited in the 5th Biennale in Barcelona, Spain in spring 2019.

Obituaries

Madeline Gonzalez

Madeline Gonzalez passed peacefully in her home on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. She lived 94 happy years.

Madeline leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law Lydia and Augustine Rada, three grandchildren, Annalisa Rada-McGee (Edmond McGee), Daniel Rada (Nanette Chavez), Augustine M. Rada and three great grandchildren, Katie McGee, Mia McGee and Samantha Rada.

Madeline was born in Carpinteria and lived there for half of her life. She was extremely dedicated in her faith and had many good friends she met through the church. In her younger years, she enjoyed visiting family in the Los Angeles area dancing and enjoying live music until dawn. She lived simply. She enjoyed the beauty in nature around her, always appreciating a full moon, beautiful flowers, good music and good food.

A mass will be held for Madeline on Friday, Nov. 2 at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria. A reception will follow at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club.

Carol Marie Catlin

Carol Catlin, just shy of her 95th birthday in December, passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018 with loved ones by her side.

She is now with her groom of 70 years, William F. Catlin, who passed in 2016.

Carol was born on Dec. 15, 1923, in Donnybrook, North Dakota. She was the only girl. She had six older brothers, who all took pride in their little sister. Carol was preceded in death by her mother Idella Bandoline Wieman and brothers Ed, Ivan, Bill, Forrest and Joe. She is survived by her brother Stanley Wieman and his wife Wanda, and her sister-in-law Dona Haffey.

Carol and her family lived on a farm in North Dakota until it was eventually lost in the depression. They then moved to Beaumont, California to be with relatives. Later they moved to Banning, California, to work in the Peach Canneries.

From there, four of the brothers moved to Oildale, California. This is where Idella and three of her sons lived out the rest of their lives. Joe and Stan moved to the Bay Area and had a very successful Men’s Barber Shop.

Carol is survived by her daughter Sandra Marie Ryer and husband Ken of Squaw Valley, California; grandson Phil and his wife Becky, their daughters Felicia (Tanner), Brianna and Sarah; daughter Wanda Catlin Escoto and her husband Eddie of Ojai; granddaughter Joanne Escoto Niell and her husband Rich Niell; grandsons Michael Escoto and Daryl Escoto; and great-grandson James Niell and wife Janae. She is also survived by her nephew Craig Kendrick and his family, who currently manage and run the Catlin Ranch on a daily basis; Craig’s brothers Clark and Scott, and their father, Mr. Ed Kendrick of Tucson, Arizona.

Carol was very active in our daily family life on the ranch, girl scouts, water skiing, trips to Colorado River and later Lake Powell, and she loved her life on the ranch, with all of the many varieties of avocados, fruits and vegetables that they would plant on the yearly family garden.

Carol spent the last two years of her life at the Haave House, ironically in the same room as her very best friend Jessica Shepard. She was taken very good care of and loved by all. Thank you, Bonnie!

We will be holding a private family dinner for Carol and close friends to respect her wishes. Any donations should be made to the Ojai Humane Society in Carol and Bill Catlin’s name.

Foster H. Campbell 1920 – 2018

Fos Campbell of Carpinteria passed away on Oct. 28, 2018, following the death of his beloved wife of 75 years, Dorothy, by just three months.

Fos grew up on his uncle’s farm in Ohio, then in the little lakeside town of St. Joseph, Michigan where he loved to sail with his cousin Don and his fellow Sea Scouts. He went to Iowa State University, met Dorothy, and graduated with a degree in physics just in time to join the Navy and get sent to England as an electronics technician in 1941, before the U.S. had even entered WWII. He crossed the North Atlantic on a Norwegian freighter in a convoy haunted by German U-boats, one of which famously torpedoed and sank the Rueben James, near Fos’ ship, the first U.S. ship sunk in the war.

systems on aircraft carriers. He sailed on the carrier Block Island in the Atlantic and by the end of the war was on the carrier Hancock in the South Pacific, where he lost many shipmates to a Kamikaze attack.

With the war ended, and now married to Dorothy, Fos went to Harvard Business School on the GI Bill, then moved his young family to California in 1947, settling in Pasadena. He went to work in a succession of company start-ups capitalizing on the new war-time technologies.

Companies like Helipot, Beckman Industries, Statham Labs and Litton Industries, where he combined his technical knowledge with his love of people and became a successful sales manager.

When he felt he had been cheated out of very lucrative stock options by one of his (later notorious) bosses, he vowed to never work for anyone again, and started his own company in 1962: High Vacuum Electronics. The company manufactured vacuum switchgear, products used in medical, test and communications equipment. In 1968, he moved the family and the company, now called Kilovac, to Carpinteria, where the company occupied a lemon-packing shed on Linden Avenue.

Fos loved to tell the story of how people anxious to go to work for one of the first tech businesses in the area would form long lines up Linden Avenue waiting to apply for a job. Fos’ loyalty to the many people who worked for him, and who helped make the company a success, was best expressed in his granting company stock to all of his employees, representing more than a third of the value of the company. Many who worked at Kilovac later went on to start and work at Gigavac, also in Carpinteria, and they were also a strong advocate for sharing the company’s success with employees.

Fos was one of the original members of Carpinteria Rotary founded in 1973. He also helped with the AEA Private Industry Council, SB Scholarship Foundation, Carpinteria Education Foundation and the Friends of the Library. He was honored by the City of Carpinteria in 2010 for his contributions in diversifying the local economy with over $150 million of payroll paid out over the 25 years of Kilovac operations.

Fos loved his family more than anything and was surrounded in his final hours by his children, Doug, Kathy (Bressler), Don and Steve, many of his seven grandkids, and his extended family of daughter-in-laws and caregivers. He is survived by four great-grandchildren as well.

A memorial service for both Fos and Dorothy will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

Appreciating Carpinteria’s beauty

The other day I looked around and saw people who carelessly littered on the street. I saw invasive weeds choking vegetation where once grew beautiful shade trees and fragrant flowers, I saw buildings and houses covering hillsides where once grew beautiful jungles. I was in Hawaii. And this is what results from unchecked growth and rampant tourism.

Now, I am so grateful to be back in Carpinteria, where the people are warm and caring; where the bluffs, the salt marsh and the ocean soothe the psyche, and our small city government keeps our little corner of the planet turning on its proper course.

It is often said that we only protect what we love. Where there is no love, greed rushes in to fill the void. Here we all strive to protect our environment because we understand that the trees help to sequester excess carbon, that wetlands filter our pollution, and that the ocean nourishes our sea life and struggles to forgive us our sins. We protect it because we have sincere love for the environment.

Water wise

Summerlanders are such innocents when it comes to water issues and who’s running things. Recently, I wrote a blithe piece about the slate running for the Montecito Water Board. Brian Goebel and Cori Hayman, candidates from the “Committee for Montecito Water Security,” spoke at an SCA meeting. Only one incumbent, Dick Shaikewitz, a veteran of many years on the board, is running.

Goebel and Hayman made a commonsense appeal for better water management, which sounded great. But what about all the yard signs and the expensive brochures—full color, eight-page glossy fold-outs delivered to every door? The young woman who dropped ours by was a paid delivery person.

Who put up the money for what appears to be a take-over campaign? $100,000 in advertising for starters—just to assume command of a small, local water board? The Indie ran a piece exposing Bob Hazard as a prime orchestrator behind the push. Hazard is a frontand-center columnist for the Montecito Journal and former golf club president of Birnam Wood. (Thank you, Nick Welsh.)

Hmm. Welsh admitted he had no proof, but suspicions are inevitable when big money is spent.

A native Californian, I’ve lived in the Golden State long enough to know that water has generated many a bloody battle. This could be another example—but with gloved hands, less blood and more civilized, more Montecito. Little orphan Summerland, a late-comer to the Montecito Water District, has to take a bleacher seat and watch.

Life at the beach

The capping of one old-time leaky oil well below Lookout Park appears to have solved the oil problem in that area. But oil from other improperly abandoned wells continues to pollute stretches of beach all the way to Loon Point. And a strong petroleum odor regularly haunts the beach just below the east end of Lookout.

No two days at the beach are the same.

One day you encounter big patties of soft black tar deposited along the sand.

Another day, scallops of black, degraded oil bits mark every wave line. Then a day with clean sand appears. The next day may be followed by the ocean pushing in smelly brown foam.

More capping of leaky wells is needed, and money has been set aside for additional work. Aerial surveys have located several off-shore oil plumes indicating leaks where wells were drilled from long piers dating from the early 1900s.

For future reference, citizens keeping logs with the dates and specific places besmirched with oil will be helpful. Heal the Ocean is keeping an eye on this, but reports from spotters will help facilitate the next fix.

discussion about the driftwood still packing the beach above the tideline. Most of it was delivered to Summerland’s beach by the debris flow last winter. Folks have been systematically carting away plastic and metal bits and boards with nails. Still left are planks, logs and pieces of two-byfour piled like windrows below the bluffs.

Jeff O’Neil, who lives above the beach, contacted Marborg to see about getting a couple of dumpsters to haul the wood away. Others thought the driftwood should be left in place, citing creative sculptures and huts people have built with on the sand. Reeve Woolpert, SCA vice chair, brought in a dozen pieces of cut wood found on the beach and recited what each was—from Philippine mahogany to oak to teak. “Some of us love the wood,” he said.

There was unanimous agreement on getting rid of hazardous debris, and a community clean-up day was set for the weekend after Thanksgiving. Only wood with nails will be gathered and tossed that day.

Concerts no more

Went to see St. Paul and the Broken Bones at the Arlington last week. A friend had raved about this retro-soul group out of Alabama. They’re on a smokin’ hot tour, having hit the big time with appearances on the Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel, Austin City Limits and others.

I think hitting the big time pitched them into a rock and roll mode because what my husband and I experienced was definitely a rock concert—complete

with flashing lights and colored fog. The promo material claimed that the band was making music that dealt with “family and how we love them despite our differences.” Since I couldn’t make out any of the words due to extreme volume, I couldn’t tell.

The lead singer, Paul Janeway, was certainly a phenomenon. A tubby white guy wearing glasses, he could really belt out the blues, or soul, or the rock crossover version we heard. He wore a glittering golden cape to strut around stage and put me in mind of a Faberge egg.

At a certain point, I noticed that the purse in my lap was vibrating, and it wasn’t my phone, it was the music. If my purse was acting as a sound chamber, what was going on in the bigger chamber inside my body? I looked over at Roger.

Yes, our bones were vibrating. We left early.

Our friend called the next day to apologize. The band was fabulous when she’d first heard them four years ago.

But they’d morphed to suit a new demographic. At a certain point in your long life you just have to opt out of the pop scene—to protect your hearing, your health, your sanity.

Report shows signs of commercial real estate recovery

The local commercial real estate market has recovered much of its momentum since the natural disasters of last December and January, according to the Hayes Commercial Group’s third quarter (Q3) report.

Transactions countywide during the past two quarters are trending only 10 percent below the prior five-year average. However, the current inventory of 74 commercial properties for sale is the largest in recent memory and represents an 80 percent expansion since the beginning of the year. With demand from investors still recovering, there do not appear to be sufficient buyers to address current supply, according to the Hayes report.

There have been five sales to date in Carpinteria and Summerland. The most notable Q3 transaction was the Sly’s restaurant building at 686 Linden Ave., purchased by an owner-user for $2.09 million.

In Carpinteria, available leasing space has decreased by 56 percent over the past 12 months. Synectic Systems leased 8,896 sq ft in the former Lynda.com building at 6398 Cindy Lane. The balance of the building, totaling 10,167 sq ft, is still for lease though, representing the largest space for lease currently available in Carpinteria.

In Carpinteria, 95 percent of the square footage leased to date has been renewals.

Printing equipment manufacturer ZBE Inc. renewed 13,800 sq ft at 1033 Cindy Lane; Reality Church renewed 20,632 sq ft at 5251 6th St.; and TE Connectivity renewed 20,504 sq ft at 550 Linden Ave. At the same time, the commercial lease vacancy rate has more than doubled since the beginning of the year, reaching 3.8 percent, a rate not seen since 2012. Most

of the availability is in two large spaces: the 24,030 sq ft building at 6384 Via Real vacated by Astro Aerospace (Northrop Grumman), and 20,000 sq ft at 550 Linden Ave. The report notes that heading into the final months of 2018, inventory in Santa Barbara County is the largest it has been in at least a dozen years. Office and retail property transactions are both trending about 40 percent below the prior five-year average. It’s not clear yet whether investor demand will recover to the levels seen in recent years, or if the market is entering a new phase of de-celeration. As interest rates increase prices will tend to fall, as investors will require a higher return to cover their financing.

On the other hand, there has been a surge of owner-user buyers this quarter, which the report suggests indicates that the local business community is rebounding well, even if investors are being cautious.

by Astro Aerospace, is now listed for $5,995,000.

Notice of Public Hearing Carpinteria Unified School District Real Property District Advisory Committee Please take notice that on November 8, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the Carpinteria Unified School District Board Room, 1400 Linden Ave, Carpinteria 93013 the Real Property District Advisory Committee (DAC) will conduct a public hearing on its preliminary recommendations concerning disposition of two unused school sites. At the same meeting, following the close of the public hearing, the DAC may submit its final recommendation to the CUSD Governing Board. The preliminary recommendations and background information are as follows: 1. DAC recommendation. Designate the Whitney Avenue site (Temple Street in Summerland, 6.84 acres) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the site in accordance with law.

Background: This vacant site was acquired in approximately 1955 and has been unused during the interim. Earlier plans to potentially relocate the existing Summerland School to this location have been studied and rejected. The site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

2. DAC recommendation. Designate the 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave. sites (two contiguous properties, 3.78 and 3.20 acres, with improvements) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the sites in accordance with law.

Background: These sites were acquired in 2000 for a possible new school. However, sustained enrollment declines have ruled out any future utilization for a new school. This site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

Sale proceeds from these properties are restricted to capital projects and would be available to fund facility needs not included in the Measure U bond program.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders have never known a world not inextricably wired to the internet. Yet there’s a deficit in availability of technology in Carpinteria Middle School classrooms.

Carpinteria Education Foundation has launched a new initiative to remedy the glaring need to provide greater access to laptops in CMS classrooms. CEF, the nonprofit that fundraises for local public schools, is committed to providing 60 more Google Chromebooks to the school and is encouraging community members to step up and pitch in to erase critical gaps in access to technology in classrooms.

The price tag for 60 new Chromebooks is $18,000, and CEF will match up to $9,000 in community fundraising to reach the full cost of the laptops.

“The school district identified the area as a critical need to get Carpinteria Middle School up to speed with technology in the classroom,” said Casey Balch, board president of CEF. “It’s an urgent, unfunded need that wouldn’t otherwise be provided.”

CEF will accept mail-in donations to 1400 Linden Ave., or P.O. Box 9 and digital payments through carpedfoundation. org/. Donations sent with “CMS tech” on the check or as a note on a PayPal contribution will add to the total amount matched by CEF. The deadline to contribute is Dec. 20, the start of Winter Break.

Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby lists preparing all students for college or career readiness as the district’s chief goal.

“You will not be ready for college if you do not use digital tools,” Rigby said. In identifying the need to upgrade access to technology, Rigby stated that some computers are currently available, but there are not enough to meet the demand for today’s classroom.

“It’s about creativity and communication,” Rigby said. “I heard one example from a biology class, where students are learning about cells, and then they use their laptops to actually create virtual cells as part of a multimedia presentation.

It allows students to be much more three dimensional and to create products that lead to a much higher level of learning.”

First come, first served

Specifically, the $18,000 fundraising effort will provide two more computer carts at CMS. Teachers currently share four carts of 30 computers and have two computer labs to access. On a daily basis, the flow of computers is decided by whoever signs up first. Scheduling to make sure all students get enough computer time becomes difficult when state testing season comes around.

Student learning of course material gets a boost because they’re writing reports, pulling images from the web and accessing multimedia material that’s familiar to today’s learners.

Social studies teacher John Fowler also counts on computers in the classroom to provide access to materials that target each student’s level of learning. Content can be curated for lessons and paced for individual needs.

Classrooms everywhere face the challenge of bringing students learn up to speed in a world gone digital. Textbooks remain a primary resource, but the advent of interactive spaces like Google Classroom have forever changed the ways teachers organize lessons and students interact with curriculum.

CMS Principal Lisa O’Shea said across all grades and subjects, technology is no longer an accessory to learning, or a novelty that provides neat but ultimately unnecessary support to instruction. Access to technology is a primary need and an integral part of every classroom every day.

Adding two more Chromebook carts into circulation at CMS will be a significant step toward meeting student needs, Rigby said. “We have about 120 laptops at the middle school now. We need about 500. Every cart and every computer helps us reach our goal of closing the gap. Computers now are almost like borrowing a pencil in the work world—students need digital tools.”

Canalino teachers and students move to new digs

Six new Gen 7 classrooms on the Canalino Elementary School campus are now home to the Carpinteria Family School, Canalino’s fifth grade and one fourth/fifth combination class. The students and staff would like to thank the community of Carpinteria for their support of Measure U, which upgrades local school facilities and creates modern spaces for teaching and learning that facilitates technology integration, collaborative discussions and effective instruction.

WWI exhibit honors Veterans Day In honor of the 100th anniversary of those who fought in The Great War, the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History is currently showing the exhibit, “Lest We Forget: Memories of World War One.” The exhibit begins by explaining the history of Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918. This federal holiday now honors all of those who have served our country in the military.

The exhibit further incorporates oral histories of local Carpinterians, photographs, a uniform, gas mask and other artifacts from the museum’s collections. Of particular note are battlefield artifacts collected by Mario Prevedello on Mount Grappa in Italy. Prevedello immigrated to America in 1928, moving to Carpinteria in 1929 where he was employed by the Monte Vista Dairy, later becoming a partner in the business. His collection of relics are an interesting array of soldier equipment and weapons lost in battle, including an Italian helmet, bayonet and dog tags, ice crampons, mess kits, a German canteen, an Italian canteen with a large bullet hole, a hand grenade, shells, and even barbed wire from the trenches.

Located at 956 Maple Ave., museum hours are 1 to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday (closed on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11). Admission is free and donations are appreciated.

Playa Del Sur 4-H of Carpinteria has announced its new 2018-19 youth Officer Team. The new officers are looking forward to the continued task of rebuilding their livestock facility which was destroyed during the flood earlier this year, and to grow 4-H membership through exciting projects and fun events. As the livestock facility comes together, the group will have breeding and market beef and sheep projects.

They are also looking to construct a new chicken coop to produce eggs. The club plans to have other projects too, such as gardening, baking, grilling, camping, leadership and more. barbara dunlap People often exaggerate when they talk about a “lifelong relationship,” but it fits the bill perfectly for Jamie Persoon and Canalino Elementary School. At age six, Persoon (then Jamie Morris) attended first grade in Canalino’s Room 5; years later, she started her teaching career with a first-grade class in that very room; and 14 years after that she became Canalino’s principal.

Persoon enthusiastically champions educational causes in town. As a parent and community member, she volunteers at events such as Carp-a-Cabana and the Orchard to Ocean Run, both of which benefit local schools. In her dual role as principal of Canalino and Carpinteria Family schools, she welcomes volunteers to serve in a variety of roles in and out of the classroom.

Here’s a closer look at Persoon’s volunteer interests.

Q: Carp-a-Cabana in September and the Orchard to Ocean Run in March are both sponsored by Carpinteria Education Foundation. How and why do you participate in these events?

A: Proceeds from Orchard to Ocean go directly to parent groups in each school in the district, and Carp-a-Cabana this year funded arts in the elementary schools. At Canalino, we’re thrilled to have choral, dance, theater and visual arts, so students get a semester of each in a two-year span.

The district budget cannot currently support funding for arts specialists to come in, but thanks to Carpinteria Education

Foundation, the students are now receiving that enrichment. The foundation is also building up funds to make arts programming a sustainable effort.

I’ve worked at Carp-a-Cabana and Orchard to Ocean and donated money to them for about 20 years. Canalino is also a center of publicity for these events because we’re in touch with about 1,200 parents. I encourage others to volunteer by saying, “I’m going to attend this weekend—hope to see you there.”

Q: What kinds of volunteer jobs are available at Canalino and Carpinteria Family School?

A: For the most part, it’s one-on-one with students or working with small

groups, generally on a reading or math task. Teachers give very clear instructions as to what needs to be done, and they lay it all out for the volunteers. The tasks usually stay similar from week to week so you don’t have to keep relearning them.

We also welcome volunteers for other activities such as coming to play on the playground. Recess support is so helpful—the children feel important and valued when adults take time to play with them. It can be foursquare, tetherball or even pushing a little one on the swing. It’s an extra connection for children to make throughout the day.

Q: Do you want volunteers for special events, as well?

Yes, we do. One event is Family Math Night on Nov. 9. Volunteers run small stations in different rooms depending on the topic. It might involve blocks for young ones and other challenges for older students. It’s just like playing with kids, but it’s also teaching math and number sense and interacting with families.

Q: How would you describe the volunteer level in Carpinteria schools?

A: I think our schools have very active volunteerism. At Canalino, we have parent and grandparent volunteers and a number of community members. We have English- and Spanish-speaking parent groups. Not everyone can come to meetings, but if I need people to chalk the lines for a jog-a-thon, for example, I just pick up the phone and get two dozen volunteers.

At the high school, I’m impressed with volunteer athletic boosters. You might think parent engagement drops off in high school, but I see a lot of families supporting their kids. Families show support at athletic events, driving vans and bringing snacks. It’s nice to see this level of engagement.

Other organizations like Rotary, Lions and Girls Inc. also understand that the public schools need additional support to offer vibrant programs for kids. For example, Girls Inc. received a grant to support literacy for girls at Canalino, and Rotary does a drive for mentor matches in the schools. The support is phenomenal.

Q: Why do you think it’s important to volunteer in the community—especially with youth?

A: A lot of our students need positive adult role models. Research shows that children need only one positive adult role model to be successful.

For several years, local author Betsy Green has been looking at copies of 100-year-old Santa Barbara area newspapers and compiling the best articles for a book. At a recent Morning Rotary meeting, she discussed her latest book, “Way Back When: Santa Barbara in 1917.”

In the book’s “centerfold,” there is an article entitled, “Women in Pants.” Green detailed what she’d learned about the great forest fires of 1917, telling stories of temperatures soaring to 115 degrees and people fleeing to the beach to escape the heat. The Carpinteria High School football team traveled to Nordhoff to play their final game of the year, falling to the Rangers by a score of 38-7. The loss eliminated the Warriors from the CIF playoffs, which will keep the team home for the first time since 2014. Carpinteria finishes 5-5 overall and 2-4 in the Citrus Coast League, while Nordhoff tied for first in League at 5-1 with Santa Paula and 8-2 overall. The Rangers will host Simi Valley in a first-round CIFSS playoff game this Friday, Nov. 2.

On the fifth play from scrimmage, Nordhoff ran for a three yard-score to make it 7-0 with still eleven minutes to play in the first quarter. They then capitalized on a fumbled snap by the Warriors for another short touchdown run to make it 14-0 with a little over three minutes left in the opening stanza. Brayden Rodgers scored on 50-yard jaunt to open the second quarter, moving the Rangers to a 21-0 lead.

The home team racked up another score with a 47-yard run to make it 28-0 with 8:03 left in the second quarter. The Warriors finally got on the board following a good run-back on the kickoff to the

On a sun-scorched day in Ojai, the undefeated Cate Rams took on longtime rival Thacher Toads on Saturday, Oct. 27, in a hard-fought contest. The Rams came out as hot as the day’s temperature and rolled to a 68-30 victory, finishing the regular season at 8-0.

The Rams scored three first-quarter touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jack Deardorff found junior Thomas Nettesheim for two touchdown passes of 33 and 18 yards each. The final two Cate scores came when sophomore Khadim Pouye punched the ball in from four yards out, and another when Jack Deardorff and Anastasio connected from 12 yards out. The Rams forced three turnovers on the day, as junior Callum Casey had an interception and recovered a fumble. Anastasio recovered a fumble as well. Senior Ethan Cassulo and junior Will Anderson made plays on the defensive side of the ball for Cate, while

freshman Mason Oetgen and junior Chris Tarafa both made special teams plays for the Cate side.

“Anytime you finish a season undefeated, it’s special, to close out the year the way we did, on the road against our rival, is more special,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto. It is the fourth time in program history that a Cate football team has finished the regular season undefeated. The Rams will take on Desert Christian in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at Carpinteria High School’s Valley Memorial Stadium. “We’d love to see the Carpinteria community turn out and support the Rams on Friday—football season is still alive and well here in our home, and we are going to do our very best to represent our city in the postseason,” said Soto.

Boys water polo October 24 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team faced Fillmore for their last Citrus Coast League game of the season, winning the game 23-2. Balti Nunez had a hat trick in the third quarter, scoring three goals. “This game was the last season game ever for the Warrior seniors Luke and Solomon Nahooikika-Anderson, Liam Slade, Ali Hamadi, J.R. Hajducko, Ben Kitt and Nico Kalin, who all had stellar performances,” said Carpinteria assistant Sergio Castaneda. The Warriors completed a flawless season for their first ever League title.

October 30 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team faced off against the Burroughs Indians in their first round of CIF, swimming away with an 8-6 win. “Liam Slade had an incredible performance as a shield to the cage, blocking repeated shots, making incredible passes, and even getting himself a goal in the first quarter with one second remaining,” said Warriors Assistant Coach Sergio Castaneda. “Freshman Mateo Handall came up huge as well, with great defense and an offensive play that converted into a goal that secured the victory for the Warriors,” added Castaneda.

Girls tennis – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team played at Hueneme in the inaugural Citrus Coast League Girls Tennis Individuals Finals. In the championship match, Amy Perez/Karla Marin ran into a doubles team from Malibu and came up just short, losing 6-3, 6-4. In the third place match, Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma lost their first set, but pulled it out to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In singles, it was Carp vs Carp as Josie Gordon squared off against teammate Sydney Endow with Gordon winning 6-3, 6-4. The top two players in singles and the top two doubles teams advance to the CIF Sectionals on Friday, Nov. 19.

Cate School Girls volleyball October 24 – The Cate School girls volleyball team fell to Linfield Christian in the third round of the CIF-SS Division Seven playoffs, three game to two. “It’s tough losing in five, but our young team stood up to a lot of bigger, experienced talent,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Grace Blankenhorn dug up 22 balls. Elise Guerrand-Hermes led the team with 12 kills, Maya Blattberg followed with 10, and Grace Johnson tallied six kills. Chidera Chukwumerji had eight blocks, while Riley Borchardt had nine aces, most of which came in the second set. “We fought until the very last point, we were down 6-12 in the fifth set and came back 12-14 which showed our true grit,” said Novak.

Cate School four-sport athlete Will Anderson received the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Phil Womble Memorial Ethics in Sports Award on Monday, Oct. 29.

Anderson has competed in football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball while achieving high grades scholastically and also excelling in music. Anderson recently released his first album in iTunes and Spotify. Once indigenous CVN

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH My great-great-grandfather John Beamish, with his brother Alleyn, left their home near Skibbereen in West County Cork, Ireland in 1867/68 and sailed for New Zealand, where their brother George ran a mercantile shop in Patea, Taranaki. Within four months of their arrival, the brothers had joined the Irish Armed Constabulary—a bush police force assembled to protect settlers.

Ngati Ruanui—who had lived in Taranaki since at least 1300 A.D. when they arrived, probably from Tahiti, aboard voyaging wa’a—had been tearing down fences at homesteads in an effort to keep their land. The pakeha (British and Irish settlers), were frightened.

Before dawn on July 12, 1868, my great-great grandfather and great-greatuncle were encamped at an outpost called Turuturu Mokai among 26 fellow Armed Constabulary troops, when a war party of about 60 Ngati Ruanui fighters attacked. Ten Constabulary were killed, including my great-great-uncle Alleyn.

John Beamish took a bullet through his shoulder, but survived. Three Ngati Ruanui died in the fight.

While the assault was a great tactical accomplishment for Maori leader Titokowaru, who also defeated Constabulary forces in a following battle before moving his people deep into the interior—the tide of settlement moved against Ngati Ruanui and pakeha took control of the land.

What does this history have to do with surfing? Very little, or a lot—depending on how one looks at it.

Because surfing is a Polynesian art, practiced to perfection by Hawaiians and first reported to Europeans by Captain Cook, then brought to Americans of European descent centuries later at Waikiki by the likes of Duke Kahanamoku and others who had learned from their elders, who in turn had kept the old ways alive through the missionary period.

Maori and Hawaiians understand each other’s respective languages, as both cultures share a lineage of seafaring and are part of the Polynesian migrations across the Pacific Ocean (Te-Moana-nui-a Kiwa in Maori, Moana Pakipika in Hawaiian—though Pakipika seems possibly to be a translation of English, not the original word for Pacific). It might be a stretch to link present-day surfing—its polymer-blend boards and mostly petroleum-based wetsuits, not to mention

its ceaseless marketing machine—with the intricate social systems and cultural practices of ancient Polynesia. But the one could not exist had the other not come first.

The Treaty of Waitangi was finally settled between the Crown and Ngati Ruanui in March, 2002, giving the iwi (tribe) $40 million and returning land in Taranaki, and this seems a better outcome than most indigenous people have experienced. My grandfather left Taranaki for Los Angeles in 1930, and I do not know what he thought of his grandfather’s involvement in the Irish Armed Constabulary, but I remember him telling me about a dear Maori friend of his, with whom he used to catch eels as a boy down in New Zealand/Aotearoa. And my father—born in 1932, an L.A. County lifeguard at Zuma Beach, a bodysurfer and sometimes Malibu surfer, though he shied away from board riding after nearly drowning when knocked unconscious by a redwood plank—introduced me to the ocean early on, as we have ourselves become “Pacific people,” at least in the sense that we understand its water, harvest its bounty and love its waves.

What I am getting to is a sense of the movement of peoples across the globe, driven by forces larger than the individuals themselves, in which cultural practices disseminate in all directions. (Maori become great Rugby players, pakeha take up surfing and use the word aloha/aroha in Maori.) The cultural influences go beyond surfing and rugby of course, as every person alive on the planet today lives in a world irrevocably transformed by technology and the destruction of nature. But I think about my great-greatgrandfather and his brother sailing in steerage class and becoming privates in the Armed Constabulary. They would have been seeking something better than they’d had in Ireland, but like the settlers in America, that “something better” necessarily came at the expense of the people who were there first. Indigenous practices are not suited to market-based economies.

Could settlement and transformation of indigenous territories have happened any other way but through violence?

These thoughts are not fully formed, but I am haunted by the bloodshed and terror of the past (and the not-too-distant past, either) and enmeshed in a future that has been formed by terrible events. Is this what’s called “white guilt”? The implication is weakness. “I’m not an Indian killer, I never owned slaves,” a person might say—perhaps not, but my great-greatgrandpappy fought Ngati Ruanui Maori and helped to wrest their land from them.

That fact keeps me from feeling comfortable, literally, in my own skin.

So, the other night during a Q & A with the great Australian surfer Wayne Lynch at a Santa Barbara screening of Patagonia’s film “Never Town” about the threat of oil drilling off Australia’s Great Southern Bight, I asked—in a somewhat incoherent ramble—how people

of European descent can partner with indigenous people in an effort to protect the land. What I expected Lynch to tell me I am not sure, but he was playing a didgeridoo in another surf film 20-years back, and he has long practiced the land in South Australia exploring remote waves and seemed to have adopted, to a certain extent, an Aboriginal outlook.

I suppose I figured if anyone could tell me how to integrate indigenous ways, it would be Lynch.

I attempted to construct my question to him carefully, bringing in the idea that the world has been transformed by technology, largely by people of European descent. “Let’s just say it,” I announced across the room, “white people.” Murmurs arose in the audience, people turning their heads to get a look at the nut job.

Petal it forward

Teams from Dümmen Orange, Farmer’s West, Gallup & Stribling, MOBI’s, Ocean Breeze Farms and Westland Floral hit the streets on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 24, handing out flowers to busy commuters to help brighten up their week. The teams joined hundreds of florists across the country for the Petal it Forward program, in partnership with the Society of American Florists. This random-acts-of-kindness effort is in response to the release of data by SAF showing the positive emotional benefits of flowers.

The City of Carpinteria Garden Park celebrated its one year anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 27, with a communitywide celebration. At the garden-to-table brunch, garden members and guests brought homemade dishes to share filled with garden-harvested fruits and vegetables. Remembering the old ways in Volendam

Doug and Donna Treloar, pictured at right, recently traveled to the Netherlands with Harry and Michele Van Wingerden to visit the area where Harry had lived up until the age of 17 when he emigrated with other family members to Carpinteria in 1967. The group also visited Volendam, best known as one of the oldest fishing villages in the Dutch province of North Holland, where they dressed in traditional 16th century Dutch clothing complete with wooden shoes, and a copy of the Coastal View News. In the early part of the 20th century, this village became something of an artists’ retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time there.
