Carpinteria re-opens (partially)

On Sunday afternoon, May 24, word spread quickly through Carpinteria that Delgado’s Mexican Restaurant had opened its doors for table service.

Waitress Samantha Smith celebrated the news with a thank you letter to the community, and before long locals and visitors alike were tucking-in to chile verde and margaritas just like the good old days—albeit with social distancing and an awareness of safety factors to keep in mind for the foreseeable future.

State approves Santa Barbara County for accelerated reopening

On Wednesday evening, May 20, the county of Santa Barbara received approval from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to move forward on an accelerated Stage II path to reopening. With this approval, Santa Barbara County restaurants can now offer dine-in service (other facility amenities, like bars or gaming areas, are not permitted) and retail businesses with exterior facing entrances are permitted to have customers inside of their stores.

While the county has seen success in reducing the spread of the virus, it is critical that business owners and members of the public continue to act responsibly, stated the city of Carpinteria in a press release on May 21, which noted that residents and visitors must continue to follow guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and that social distancing remains a requirement. City representatives said that failure to follow guidelines could jeopardize the progress made, and force a re-tightening of restrictions.

The city of Carpinteria has taken several steps to discourage crowding in high-demand public places such as local beaches and recently implemented requirements for employees and customers of local businesses to wear face coverings.

“We appreciate everything Carpinteria residents and business owners have done to keep our community safe,” City Manager Dave Durflinger said, “and we will continue to support a safe reopening of the economy that balances public health and the health of our business community.”

“This is an exciting next step for our entire community, and we are thankful for the diligent cooperation of residents,” said Van Do-Reynoso, director for the Santa Barbara County Public Health

Department. “As local businesses work through reopening, we encourage them to adhere to physical distancing and hygiene guidelines while educating both staff and customers of new practices.”

On Tuesday, May 19, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the county’s draft attestation for the business readiness criteria that was submitted to the state’s Department of Public Health the same day. The attestation documents demonstrate that the county is meeting state standards for safely reopening. In a quick turnaround, the attestation was approved by the state, paving the way for a new health officer order issued today from the County Department of Public Health.

“This next phase of our reopening process will help get more Santa Barbara County residents back to work, while ensuring that local businesses modify operations to keep their customers and workers safe,” said County Supervisor Gregg Hart.

“As we reopen additional businesses, we must all continue to prevent the spread of Covid-19 while out in the community.

Let’s work together to safely support our local businesses as we progress through our Covid-19 response and recovery.”

The types of businesses allowed to reopen in this latter phase of Stage II include dine-in restaurants (with modifications), schools and childcare, retail stores and shopping malls, and some offices.

Before the businesses can reopen in Santa Barbara County, they are required to review state and local guidance, complete a Covid-19 Prevention Plan, and self-certify that they can open safely; all of which can be found at recoverysbc.org/ reopen-your-business. Upon completion of the self-certification, businesses receive a certificate to print and display attesting to a safe and clean environment for work-

ers and customers.

To assist businesses, the county created template signage in English and Spanish depicting disinfection control and physical distancing for workplace and customer safety. The templates are available to download on the county’s

More doors open in Carpinteria’s business district

After Santa Barbara County was approved to allow some retail businesses and restaurants to reopen with social distancing in place, shops and eateries throughout the city of Carpinteria began propping open their doors.

The announcement made on Wednesday evening, May 20, came just in time for the busy holiday weekend. “So far, it’s been smooth, but there’s still more to go,” said Christina Castellanos, manager of Delgado’s Mexican Restaurant,

“but each day we’re open, we have a little bit more people dining in which is a good sign for us.”

Castellanos also noted that while Memorial Day weekend was a boon for business and overall she’s feeling optimistic, she’s still worried: “People still need to social distance, respect the restaurant and the rules. It can be a little scary, but we’re letting people in and monitoring to make sure they follow the rules.”

Coastal View News moves to new office

After 26 years at their Carpinteria Avenue location, Coastal View News is moving. On June 1, CVN will officially open its doors at a new office space at 4180 Via Real, Suite F. The new office will house RMG Ventures’ two publications: Coastal View News and Carpinteria Magazine. “We look forward to welcoming readers and advertisers at the new office,” said CVN publisher Gary L. Dobbins. CVN will continue to have regular office hours and appointments can be made in advance by calling (805) 684-4428. There will be no changes in the locations that readers may pick up the paper each week.

Salons, barbershops and churches can partially reopen

New orders issued on May 25 by the county of Santa Barbara allow for hair salons and barbershops to reopen, for places of worship to hold limited-attendance in-person services, and for schools to hold modified graduation ceremonies.

Hair salons and barbershops may now operate in person if face coverings are worn by both the stylist/barber and the customer throughout the service. Services are not allowed if they involve any touching of the customer’s face, such facials or eyebrow waxing.

Places of worship may hold services only if in-person attendance is limited to 25 percent of the building capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.

An outdoor graduation assembly may occur if the total number of attendees (including faculty and families) is fewer than 100 and social distancing is practiced throughout. Larger ceremonies can be held outdoors if all participants remain in vehicles that maintain a minimum of six-foot spacing throughout the event. Graduates may be outside their vehicle to cross a stage, receive a diploma or award, or have their photo taken.

Canalino School plans end-of-year activities and eyes a return to campus

Canalino Elementary School Principal Jaime Persoon has informed families of plans for an end-of- year drive-by parade and outlined developing plans for a possible return to campus for next school year.

A drive by parade for Canalino students and families is scheduled for Friday, June 12, at 10 a.m. through the bus loop and parking lot on Linden Avenue. Teachers and staff will be spread at six-foot intervals on the route, and Persoon noted that “there may be a few other surprises as well.” All families must parade by car, no walking or biking will be permitted, in accordance with public health guidelines.

Fifth grade promotion will be held online with presentations by Rotary and the Lions Club, student speakers, teachers, principal, awards and music. A video is being put together by the fifth-grade team and compiled by Justin Rowe and will be posted on June 15. Also, Canalino School’s Virtual Talent Show will be sent out via Parent Square on Friday, May 29.

Staff will return to campus on Aug. 19 and students will return in some capacity Aug. 24, stated Persoon. “The leadership team, with staff and parent input, have been discussing all options,” Persoon wrote, “including a hybrid brick and mortar/remote learning model, however, as we get more specific guidance from public health and watch the situation unfold in the next two months, we will likely publish a detailed plan in mid to late July.” Persoon added, “As you well know, things change daily, and we want to be responsive and mindful of conditions.”

County Office of Education hosts online Battle of the Books

Last week, 160 students competed online in the 19th Annual Battle of the Books.

Team #23 “Where the Books Meet the Moon,” earned the top honors and received T-shirts for their victory, while Team #11, “The Page Turners” earned the runner up spot, walking away with autographed books. Grace Sugich from Ballard School in Santa Ynez was the first-place winner for the individual competition, winning the overall competition with 45,351 total points. The competition was held virtually and students in grades four through six from over 40 schools in Santa Barbara County participated.

“We were thrilled to be able to honor the hard work, tenacity and perseverance of the students while allowing them to have an invigorating competitive literary experience as is typically done in our annual Battle of the Books,” said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido.

Throughout the year, students, with the support of coaches and parents, read as many of the books on the annual book list as possible, preparing to answer questions about the books in competition “battles.” Each student is appointed to a team with four or five students from different schools.

The competition includes three rounds in which the students answer multiplechoice questions. The event culminates in a final battle between the two teams that have acquired the most points during the day’s earlier rounds. Guest author Valerie Hobbs read the questions in this year’s final battle.

City Council approves small business grant program

Up to 100 business will receive $1,000 grants from the city of Carpinteria in a new program approved by City Council at their May 26 meeting. The grants will be restricted to spending on implementing safety measures required for reopening by Santa Barbara County’s Department of Public Health. The application will be made available at the city’s website, carpinteria.ca.us, as early as the end of this week. Hard copies of applications will also be passed out to businesses in person.

City Council also approved an emergency ordinance to allow businesses to put tables and racks on sidewalks and possibly in parking spaces. Businesses will have to request permission from the city through a temporary permit application. Applications will be made available this week on the city’s website.

Additionally, the council approved removing the “No Parking” designation on the diagonal spaces on Linden Avenue between Sandyland and 6th Street.

Masons to award scholarships

Carpinteria Masonic Lodge will award its annual scholarship at their next meeting.

For 20 years the Masons have awarded Carpinteria Unified School District graduating seniors with college scholarships, totaling over $60,000.

This year’s scholarship selection committee is comprised of Myron Shann, Wes Franken and Joe Franken. Candidates are awarded scholarships based on their GPA, community and school involvement, personal essay and character letters of recommendation along with their application.

The Masons celebrate and support the public education system each year with their scholarship program and the Middle School Spelling Bee, now in its 35th year.

Robert “Bob” Lee Magruder 1932 – 2020

Robert “Bob” Lee Magruder, a longtime resident of the Santa Barbara/Carpinteria, California area, died peacefully on Thursday, May 21, 2020, with his granddaughter, Sara, and her dog Kahlo, by his side.

Bob was born in Los Angeles, California in 1932, where he spent his youth growing up in Whittier, California.

He spent his college years at the Santa Barbara College of the University of California and in 1955 he graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science. His first jobs were connected to the college in the athletic department and sports news casting. He spent the rest of his working life working in various jobs in the insurance industry.

He married Barbara Gill in 1957 and they had three children in four years, divorcing in 1964. He married Ruth (Sally) Schroeder King in 1971 and was a stepfather to her two children, Lisa and Greg, for the next seven years. They divorced in 1977. He married the love of his life, Joan (Oliver) Moore, in February 1978.

They traveled together, navigated their way through the deaths of two of Bob’s children (Sara and James) and became the biggest fans of anything related to UCSB and the singing group The Four Freshmen.

After growing up an only child, Bob flourished under Joan’s love of family. Their house was always full of grandchildren for summers, holidays and any celebration.

He and Joan separated in 2010, probably due to the frustrations around the beginnings of his dementia. They remained married and good friends, sharing their dog Peanut, until Joan died in 2016.

Bob, also known as Buddy by family when he was growing up, had an extended family of uncles and aunts reaching from Los Angeles to Minnesota and Washington DC. His father, William Henry Magruder, was born to a large family in the Arlington/DC area in 1896, served in WWI and was a well-loved, likable man until his death in 1989. Bob’s mother struggled to have children and treasured her only child. She grew up in Minnesota in a large Norwegian family.

She died in 1976. They spent a lot of time with aunts, uncles and cousins at Moon’s Cafe (Santa Fe Springs) talking about life and racing go-karts on the nearby track (Bob’s cousin Dean Moon would eventually own Moon Speed Equipment). He joined the Naval reserves in 1949 and was an airman until 1953.

Friends were an important part of Bob’s life. He kept in touch with Walter Pierce, Craig Powers and Bob Rolph, a combination of high school and college friends, getting together with them yearly. He had his weekly Harry’s Plaza lunch buddies, Kay Holmes and Earle Whitney, from the insurance industry, whose politics were different, but they always seemed to be able to laugh and have a good time. Bob highly respected those in the journalism field and seemed to know everyone in town connected to news, especially sports writers. Everyone always commented on Bob’s friendliness and his smile. He still had this wonderful disposition to the end.

Bob spent about six and a half years living at the Friendship Manor in Isla Vista after he and Joan separated. He was able to walk to every sporting event at UCSB and daily to the bluffs overlooking the sea. As his dementia worsened, his family and friends helped him to remain there and independent as long as possible. He even laughed at himself at times knowing he was making mistakes.

He was also a proud life member of the Mensa Society, so he was convinced he should be able to work a “smart phone” and was a little upset when he couldn’t seem to answer it!

His last almost three years were spent in Hood River, Oregon at Brookside Manor where he explored the area with his daughter and grandchildren. He grew to love the beauty of the Columbia Gorge, especially the wineries where everyone was always happy and having a good time. In the end, he barely knew his family or even who the Four Freshmen were, but when Trump was on the television, he would state “there he is” in a not too happy tone. Bob was a lifelong Democrat and had broken the screens on two TVs during the last four years of his life, by throwing the remote control at Trump.

Needless to say, we eventually stopped playing the news on his TV. Toward the end of his life, his family became all the wonderful caregivers at Providence Brookside Manor, Providence Hospice, and the staff of the Providence Sunshine Club, who gave him smiles and such tender loving care.

Bob is survived by his daughter Linda Magruder Densmore (Gregg); his three stepchildren Jody Elgan Thomas (Doug), Adam Khan (Klassy) and Mike Elgan (Amira); his nine grandchildren Jessica Lara, Ben Wagner, Kevin Elgan (Nadia), Joya Groves (Jesse), Jordan Loggins (Bella), Kenny Elgan, Sara Densmore, Samantha Densmore and William Densmore; his sister-in-law Judith Mulroy; and brother-in-law John Oliver; and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Sara Gill Magruder in 1976 and his son James Lee Magruder in 2006; and his wife Joan Magruder in 2016.

In lieu of flowers, please give to the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs or to the Providence Sunshine Club, Hood River, (C/O Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave. Hood River, OR 97031), so that families can get a break when they are caring for their loved ones with dementia.

Robert McDonald, general manager for the Carpinteria Valley Water District, wrote a very informative article (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 35), on why water costs are up in Carpinteria, and he implies why those costs can never go down: “This is largely driven by the cost to acquire and maintain reliable water supplies” is the author’s closing line, referring to our regularly increasing water rates.

How, good neighbors of Carpinteria, do we feel that a new train hotel will impact our community water usage? As usage goes up, the cost to acquire water from our limited sources goes up as well. Think about it—the parking issues and congestion are one thing, and you may love or simply tolerate increased numbers of vacationers, but it’s going to make water ever more expensive for Carpinterians.

But having a parking system in place to discourage out of towners that punishes locals, is unfair. I’m not an administrative genius (just a wedding planner), but how about this: City Hall sets up an easy website where one could go on and fill out a form, requiring name, address, license plate number; staff can check the plates to see if the car owner is indeed a Carpinteria resident; one is notified by email that they are approved for a beach area weekend parking permit; a small administrative fee (perhaps $15?) could be charged for processing and to cover staffing costs; permits are available for pickup at City Hall offices, so nothing needs to be mailed; permits don’t have to be expensive decals and could be just a printout that stays on one’s dashboard; the license number of the vehicle could be printed on the permit, avoiding permit sharing. So please, city of Carpinteria— let’s get this process started soon!

There’s no debate as to whether Donald Trump is a pathological liar. According to the Washington Post, Trump has

made 18,000 false or misleading claims in just 1,170 days in office. Why is this so important? Because he’s the president of the United States. Trump began his presidency telling America, without evidence, that three to five million people illegally voted for Hillary Clinton. Clinton won the popular vote by almost three million. His resulting commission on voter fraud was disbanded after finding zero evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Unfortunately, Trump is at it again.

He’s now attempting to discredit voteby-mail, saying it’s prone to massive manipulation. Factcheck.org says otherwise, along with no evidence anywhere showing widespread voter fraud. (Trump just voted by mail in Florida’s primary.)

This is just one of Trump’s egregious outright lies, supported by the Republican Party, which continues to remain silent.

Remember when he said the coronavirus outbreak was the Democrat’s “new hoax”? If you don’t remember, it could be because he lies so often, it’s hard to keep up with the fabrications.

Trump is a notorious non-reader. He doesn’t retain information well, and as a result, his default position is to lie. He will say and do anything to “win,” and with the upcoming election, you can be assured his disregard for truth will become even more ludicrous. Lying isn’t anything new to Trump. In a 2013 tweet concerning his high school baseball prowess, he wrote, “sorry, but said to be the best b-ball player in N.Y. State—ask coach Ted Dobias—said best he ever coached.”

Many of his statements are so outrageously lame, they’re actually laughable.

On Friday, May 22, my husband and I dined out at a local restaurant in Carpinteria. We sat at a table on the front patio.

It was wonderful to feel free and normal again. As I sat eating, I wondered whether everyone, especially our politicians, had over-reacted. Recent studies show that around 42 percent of coronavirus deaths happened in nursing home settings. And many people in prisons got the virus.

Was the lockdown worth destroying our economy and small businesses? Time will tell. Going forward, it is now time to open-up America.

Viewpoint A salute to our harbor seals

Documentation shows that the harbor seal colony at Casitas Pier has been at its current location over a century. With a rocky shoreline, protection from predators on land and sea, and a readily available source of food, this unique location met all their needs. It serves as both a rookery and haulout.

Harbor Seals are semi-aquatic and must be on land to fulfill many of their physiological requirements such as thermoregulation, sleep and digestion. Most notably, they complete their life cycle in this one location, giving birth to only one pup a year, nursing their pups and teaching them survival skills, mating and molting. Unlike many pinnipeds, harbor seals do not migrate. Their entire life cycle is completed, year after year, in this one location.

Due to their limited mobility on land, they are terrified of people and dogs, both their natural predators. Having keen senses, seals will dash into the ocean when people are within their range of hearing, sight, smell or even the vibrations of footsteps. This poses a double threat when there are sea going threats at the same time, as when sharks, surfers or fishermen are within their territory.

Contrary to a perception of some, harbor seals do not compete with us for food. As most of the elements in nature’s scheme of things, they serve an important role in the food web. Studies have shown that when pinnipeds were culled, the desirable catch for humans plummeted due to a loss of that balance. It is also unfair to blame the recent increase in shark sightings on the seals. Warm waters and regulatory changes have altered that balance in nature’s plan.

The Pacific Harbor Seals at the Casitas Pier deserve a big salute. Not only have they suffered greatly from recent shark attacks and dwindling food supply, but even the life-changing coronavirus has brought an onslaught of visitors from Santa Barbara County and Ventura

County’s closed beaches—visitors who do not know this area or adhere to the beach closure laws; visitors who do not even know that we have this treasured natural resource.

But now, the beach will soon reopen to the public. Seals must stealthily sleep only by dark at the mercy of high tides when people are less likely to invade their territory. That imposes great jeopardy to the pups especially, for it is while we sleep that we grow, and the pups have not yet gained sufficient strength and fat and skill needed for diving and survival. Each time a beach goer thinks they will not harm the seals by entering their sanctuary, they should ask themselves how they would feel if they were to awaken in their bedroom to an intruder. Perhaps if we have gained anything from the coronavirus pandemic, it could be that all of life is worth cherishing.

A dozen lives taken by Covid-19 On May 26, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) reported 12 deaths among 1,604 people who tested positive for Covid-19.

Across the county, 16,443 people have been tested for Covid-19. Of the confirmed cases, 185 are still active, 1,374 have fully recovered, and 33 are pending updates. Health care workers make up 76 of the total number of cases and 971 are male inmates at Lompoc Federal Prison.

In the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, there are now 27 confirmed cases and no deaths. Lompoc’s federal prison has had two deaths. The city of Santa Maria has 285 cases, including three deaths; the city of Lompoc has 104, including two deaths; and Santa Barbara has 83 cases and one

death. Goleta has 15 confirmed cases and two deaths.

While most cases of Covid-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, the county’s growing case numbers and first deaths from Covid-19 underscore the urgent need for all residents to take extra steps to protect those who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions, such as, diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency and asthma.

A long road

Local parents share pandemic experiences

By Christian Beamish The Covid-19 pandemic has affected everyone. Not equally, of course, as frontline workers, metro/urban dwellers and those with underlying health conditions have been hit disproportionately hard.

For working families, the pandemic has presented seemingly impossible demands of maintaining work, home and school responsibilities, in many cases singlehandedly, as one spouse, if possible, is off earning income. CVN spoke with a few of these families in Carpinteria for a sense of what they’re facing, and how they envision moving forward.

Their children, seven-year-old Charley and three-and-a-half-year-old Dorian, naturally need attention and care as do their customers and clients. Clearly, the kids take priority, yet work demands have left both of the parents shaking their heads (literally) in disbelief at the scale of Covid-19 impacts. “I feel like the virus is not going to disappear quickly,” Stahl said, “and is something we are going to deal with for a while.” Additionally, “the shutdown is now adding problems and putting lives in danger in additional ways.”

An unexpected boon for some families has been the extra time at home (albeit forced), and an opportunity to slow down and communicate. “I have cherished having time to cultivate a spiritual life with my boys,” Leanne Patterson said. “They are asking all sorts of existential questions in their downtime: ‘Is there a God? If so, what is he like? Who is Jesus?’” Patterson mentioned exploring music as a family as well. To break up the long days at home, she said she and her boys Cornelius (10), Marshall (8) and Imre (6) have been “finding the out of the way trails all over Ojai and Montecito and playing in creeks!”

Almost every family reports being tired out by too many Zoom meetings, but returning to the classroom is uncharted territory. Stahl and his wife noted that without a testing protocol in place, returning to campus (even in the currently-proposed “staggered” school week) is a worrisome prospect. This feeling is echoed by Maria Dominguez whose three children are at Carpinteria Middle School and Aliso Elementary: “Without testing, it’s a joke. How will we know what other people are doing?” Her kids are doing well, mostly, but sometimes a little bored with the long days at home. Still, they are doing their homework and working with their teachers online.

Jon and Karen de Vera enjoy fresh sea air and sunshine at the Bluffs with their kids elliot and maddie.

Karen de Vera lives with her husband Jon and their preschool and elementaryaged kids Elliot and Maddie, and she noted, “We understand that ‘normal’ is now different and will be different until there is a vaccine or herd immunity or both for Covid-19.”

The upside of the change in routine brought on by the pandemic has been lower stress levels not having to grind through rush-hour traffic to work, and her engineer husband has said that he’s finding a more agreeable work/life balance working from home.

De Vera sees the looming school year as an opportunity to design a “learning time focused on really encouraging a curiosity and love for learning,” as she anticipates that “a lot more of the load will fall on parents even if schools open in the fall.”

“What we so desire these coming months,” de Vera said, “is being able to be more assured of safety for us and for families we hope to hang out with… nothing can substitute play time with similar-aged friends.”

While fortunate to have work they can do from home, Hayley and Andrew Fedders are, like so many parents, also performing the balancing act of stepping in to lead their children (four-year-old Ada,

and eight-year-old Junius) academically while meeting their own professional obligations. “We’re finally in the groove (of homeschooling), but it was hard to get into it,” they said.

What concerns Hayley, and many others, about Covid-19, is that “it’s scary because we’re complacent to it. Onehundred-thousand people have died, and people don’t want to wear masks.”

Trump administration seeks uranium mining near Lake Casitas and approves oil drilling in Carrizo Plain National Monument CVN RepoRt

In a report released in late April, a working group assembled by President Trump has recommended several steps to revive the nation’s uranium mining industry, including expanding access to uranium deposits on federal lands and fast-tracking environmental reviews to speed the permitting process, according to a statement from Los Padres ForestWatch. The report could revive past attempts to mine uranium in the Los Padres National Forest in San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, including a tract of land near Lake Casitas in the Ojai Valley, a source of drinking water for Carpinteria Valley Water District.

Many of the report’s recommendations will require additional action before taking effect, such as changes to agency rules or regulations, or passage of legislation.

But if the recommendations are ultimately enacted, conservation groups are concerned that it would amplify efforts by the mining industry to rescind a 20-year moratorium on new mining claims next to Grand Canyon National Park.

Locally, conservation groups are keeping an eye on whether the report could resurrect historic uranium mining activity in the Los Padres National Forest, including an old uranium claim near Lake Casitas in the Ojai Valley. Uranium mining also occurred in the La Panza Range in San Luis Obispo County, and in Ballinger Canyon in Ventura County.

The most controversial of these proposals occurred in 1978, when the Homestake Mining Company submitted a plan to explore for uranium deposits in the Los Padres National Forest near Lake Casitas in Ventura County. The plan included exploration of 36 uranium mining claims in the Coyote Creek drainage between White Ledge Peak and Superior Ridge, including nearly two miles of road construction and the drilling of 76 test holes. The Forest Service approved the mining plan later that year, opening the door to eventually allow the construction of an open-pit uranium mine directly upstream from the main source of drinking and agricultural water for the cities of Ojai and Ventura.

Residents organized to form Stop Uranium Now, and in response to widespread public outcry, the Interior Secretary in 1979 placed a three-year moratorium on mining around Lake Casitas, declaring 64,000 acres off-limits to uranium mining and exploration. The withdrawal was then extended for an additional 20 years, the maximum amount of time allowed by law. The mineral withdrawal expired in 2004 and has not been renewed since, leaving the area vulnerable to future mining proposals.

Further north, small-scale uranium exploration and mining boomed in the 1950s in the La Panza Range east of San Luis Obispo. Two decades later, the Lomex Corporation of Texas acquired mining claims across 1,140 acres of federal land in the Los Padres National Forest.

The company’s exploration plan was approved by the Forest Service in the 1980s but was eventually cancelled amidst public opposition led by a local organization called Oak Tree Alliance.

While no uranium mining currently occurs in the Los Padres National Forest, the region does contain the only uraniumbearing phosphate deposits in California.

The oil well would be drilled on an existing oil pad that hasn’t produced oil since the 1950s. In 2016, the BLM approved the oil company’s request to formally abandon the pad and remove an old well, pipelines and other equipment from the site. The report adds to a long line of actions by the administration to expand uranium mining on federal public lands.

In 2018, the Interior Department placed uranium on the country’s “critical minerals” list even though it didn’t meet the definition of the term. In 2019, the Commerce Department urged the expansion of “critical minerals” mining on federal public lands. And earlier this year, the Forest Service announced that it was revising regulations governing mining of uranium and other materials in national forests.

While there may be a disconnect from the somber intention of remembering the nation’s fallen soldiers and lighthearted merry making, many veterans are all too happy to see festivities occurring. After all, it is these quintessentially American activities that so many have volunteered to protect.

However, the Carpinteria Lions Club and the Carpinteria Cemetery ensure that the veterans laid to rest here are remembered with a color guard and proper words of respect each year.

County supervisors will consider tougher regs for cannabis

By Melinda Burns An unrelenting barrage of citizen complaints, contentious hearings, lawsuits, a bitter election campaign and a last-ditch request for a federal investigation has finally brought the Board of Supervisors to a critical vote on how and whether to put the lid on the cannabis industry in what some residents are calling “CannaBarbara County.”

Not since the heydays of Big Oil has an industry so divided residents here – with the difference that, in the wake of the 1969 oil spill and under pressure from a burgeoning environmental movement, the county government vigorously regulated oil and gas development, accepting more drilling, but on its own stringent terms.

By contrast, in 2018, the county Board of Supervisors overrode the findings of “significant impacts” from future clusters of cannabis operations, including “offensive odors,” and approved an ordinance that was designed to promote “a robust and economically viable legal cannabis industry.”

Now, after three years of mounting protest from Carpinteria to the lompoc Valley, a big showdown is brewing. On Tuesday (June 2), the board will consider a 5-0 recommendation from the county planning Commission to require stricter zoning permits, called conditional use permits, or CUps, for all cannabis cultivation and processing.

On one hand, industry advocates contend that “a small vocal group” of affluent NIMBY residents is demanding unreasonable restrictions that will gum up the system and set growers back more than a year and tens of thousands of dollars. And on the other, homeowners and farmers alike say their health, livelihood and quality of life are being threatened, if not ruined, by an out-of-control marijuana “Gold Rush.”

In theory, conditional use permits would set a higher bar for cannabis operators, requiring them, for example, to avoid pesticide conflicts with neighboring vintners and avocado growers and stop the eye-watering, skunk-like stench of marijuana plants from drifting into homes and wine tasting rooms.

“A CUp should have been required since Day One,” said Paul Ekstrom, a member of Concerned Carpinterians, a loosely organized group of 300 residents, businesspeople and farmers, and a board member of the Santa Barbara County Coalition for responsible Cannabis, a non-profit group with 200 members. ekstrom believes that cannabis should be readily available for sale at 7-Eleven convenience stores, like six-packs of beer.

But he is a plaintiff in a coalition lawsuit against the county, seeking relief from the “ever-present noxious odor” from four greenhouses with roof vents on Foothill.

“My house is just bombarded,” Ekstrom said. “These people are making a fortune doing this; the least they can do is come up with a better way to control odor. I just want to smell air that doesn’t smell at all.” the voters of California legalized marijuana for adult recreational use in November 2016. Today, with 1,133 state licenses for cannabis and 260 acres under cultivation, Santa Barbara County is second only to Humboldt County in its embrace of the lucrative crop. Most growers here are operating without county zoning permits or county business licenses.

At a March 25 hearing to discuss a conditional use permit, David Van Wingerden, who grows cannabis at CVW organic farms on Casitas pass road, told the Planning Commission, “You’re shutting down the entire industry.” Van

Wingerden said he took odor complaints seriously, but, he said, “Does this mean our neighborhood will never catch a whiff?”

“We need some tolerance for short periods of odors around our farms,” Van Wingerden said. “Give the current ordinance time to work.”

A conditional use permit automatically requires a public hearing before the commission. Under the current rules, cannabis projects can be approved by the county Planning Department director without a hearing, except on appeal.

Crucially, to obtain a conditional use permit, a grower would have to show that his or her cannabis operation was “compatible with the surrounding area” and “not detrimental to the comfort, convenience, general welfare, health and safety of the neighborhood.” No such findings are necessary under the current zoning permit that the county requires.

“Moving to a CUP would send all of us back to square one,” said Graham Farrar, the owner of Glass house farms greenhouses on Foothill and Casitas Pass. “The sooner you permit and fully license folks, the sooner you can penalize someone who doesn’t obey the rules. That’s what I think the community wants.”

Clamor for reforms

Cannabis critics across the county support a conditional use permit for all cannabis cultivation as an immediate “fix.” But for months, if not years, they have clamored for more far-reaching reforms: sealed cannabis greenhouses and processing buildings with state-of-the-art odor filtration systems; per-parcel “caps” on “grows”; larger buffer zones between cannabis operations and schools, homes and “legacy” farms; a ban on cultivation in and around rural neighborhoods; a ban on cultivation on coastal properties of less than 20 acres; term limits on cannabis

permits, and a shutdown of what they view as the illegal expansion of former medical marijuana “grows.”

Many of these proposals would likely require amendments to the county’s cannabis ordinance. On Tuesday, the board may consider them in addition to or instead of a CUp requirement, since they have been discussed by the Planning Commission.

Yet while the commissioners have fielded the brunt of citizen complaints about the cannabis industry and sought to address them, the supervisors, led by Das Williams of Carpinteria and Steve Lavagnino of Santa Maria, have repeatedly rebuffed their recommendations. the board has watered down proposals designed by the commission to contain or eliminate odor. It has reduced buffers between cannabis greenhouses and schools, and declined to enact a formal process to verify the validity of growers’ claims to pre-legalization medicinal “grows.” Just last month, the board increased the acreage for a cannabis project on Highway 246 beyond what the commission had recommended.

“We have watched you agonize over these topics,” Blair Pence, the owner of the Pence Vineyards & Winery, across the street from that project, told the commission in March. “Your recommendations have been consistently ignored by the county Board of Supervisors. The system is gamed to make simple solutions too complicated right now. At least a CUP will give you some control. Go for it.” pence is a coalition co-founder; he and the group filed a lawsuit last month against the Board of Supervisors and a cannabis grower who was approved for a zoning permit on Highway 246, across from Pence’s tasting room. The coalition alleges that the board broke its own zoning rules and failed to conduct proper environmental review of the project.

for county zoning permits and county business licenses. In its lawsuit, the cannabis coalition contends that most of those operations have illegally expanded well beyond their 2015 pre-legalization acreage.

But the county doesn’t keep track.

Only 20 zoning permits have been issued for cannabis cultivation to date, covering 243 acres, according to a quarterly report that was presented to the board on May 19. Meanwhile, 189 applications are in the pipeline, most of them listed as “awaiting applicant action.” There is no deadline for obtaining a permit.

On March 25, planning Commissioner John Parke proposed a conditional use permit for cannabis as “a simple, sweet thing.” Parke represents part of the scenic Sta. Rita Hills wine region west of Buellton, where swaths of white plastic cannabis hoop-houses have popped up in a federally designated American Viticultural Area. “this is something we can do right now,” Parke said. “It will resolve most of the problems we are having.”

Commissioner Mike Cooney proposed, and the commission agreed, to forward a second recommendation that the board will hear on Tuesday: that “odors generated by cannabis activities will be compatible with the surrounding area” and “will not be detrimental” to the health and welfare of the neighborhood. Yet one grower told pushed back: “Nobody complains about the smell of garlic in Gilroy because it’s the Garlic Capitol of the World.”

Cooney represents the Carpinteria Valley, a hotbed of protest ever since a number of flower greenhouses with open roof vents were converted to cannabis four years ago, many of them along Foothill, now known as “Cannabis Row.” “i wasn’t willing to let this leave the planning Commission without addressing the offensive odor,” said Cooney, who has a son living in Carpinteria. “All we’ve done is delay the inevitable.”

And I’m not sure that five members of the board agree with me on that.”

Carpinteria’s hot spots

Some Carpinteria Valley greenhouse operators have voluntarily installed vapor-control systems designed for landfills in an attempt to neutralize the smell of marijuana, which is especially strong during harvesting and processing.

Graham Farrar, owner of Carpinteriabased cannabis farm GlassHouse Farms says sealed greenhouses would be costly to build and energy-intensive to run, requiring air conditioning for 10 acres of buildings. They might be appropriate for Colorado or Canada, where it snows, he said, but “Santa Barbara is beautiful because the climate is perfect.” Farrar prefers to highlight the “bright spot” of cannabis – the $10 million in tax revenues it’s expected to bring in to county coffers during the 2020-21 fiscal year.

But Carpinterians say cannabis taxes give them no relief from the smell of marijuana that persists daily, alternating with a soapy “laundromat” smell from the greenhouse vapor-control systems.

There are five main hot spots, residents say: at Foothill and Nidever roads near the Polo Club; on Foothill west of the Carpinteria High School; near the intersection of Foothill and Casitas Pass Road; on Via Real near the Santa Claus Lane freeway exit and in the beach community of Padaro Lane.

Jim Mannoia, who lives in a 140-unit condominium complex at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, near a cluster of cannabis greenhouses at Foothill and Nidever, believes conditional use permits would require growers to contain the pungent smell of marijuana that makes him and his neighbors nauseous, gives them headaches and drives them indoors, even in warm weather.

“We have been submitting complaints,” Mannoia said, “but the supervisors, who are purportedly representing the people, don’t get it. It pretty much smells midday, non-stop. In the evenings, when we drive on Via Real, we get the same stench.

“This is not just a mild inconvenience; it’s a major change in the quality of our lives here. We’ve invested our life’s savings, and we’re in a situation where we don’t know if we can stay.”

When the wind is blowing offshore, Nanci Robertson, who lives on Padaro, says she can’t be outdoors after 5:30 p.m.

She said she has installed a $900 air purifier in her bedroom that runs 24 hours a day, but the odor steals in through her dryer vents and blasts her awake in the middle of the night.

“The board is so worried about the growers having to spend extra money,” Robertson said. “It would be very surprising to me if the board takes that CUP recommendation and runs with it.”

Robertson and others say they don’t bother anymore to file odor complaints with the county because they always get back the same “canned” reply, informing them that the county can’t require growers to install “odor abatement equipment” until they obtain zoning permits.

Last fall, Carpinterians were instrumental in an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Supervisor Williams. And in January, the coalition filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Attorney’s office, requesting a federal investigation into cannabis operations in Carpinteria.

Standoff in wine country

According to last week’s board report, the largest number of active state cannabis licenses in Santa Barbara County is held by growers in the Santa Ynez and Lompoc Valleys – 691 licenses covering 165 acres to date.

In the Santa Rita Hills between Buellton and Lompoc, vintners such as Michael Benedict, who co-founded

the Sanford & Benedict Winery west of Buellton 50 years ago, are calling the influx of cannabis “the biggest concentration anywhere in America.”

“It’s what’s been driving everybody mad,” said Benedict, who now works as a consultant. “I don’t object to cannabis.

What I do object to is for them to insert themselves right in the middle of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, where we have spent a huge amount of capital trying to create an image of a serious, world-class wine growing area.”

Rough estimates from growers suggest that one acre of wine grapes can gross anywhere from $8,000 to $25,000 in annual revenues, while one acre of marijuana can bring in as much as $1 million.

Ted Fox, vice president of compliance for Heirloom Valley LLC, a 45-acre cannabis operation on Santa Rosa Road, believes that vintners are supporting a conditional use permit for cannabis as a way to attack a formidable competitor and retain their “monopoly” status in the region.

“It’s a concerted effort on the part of a major industry to fight a new industry,” Fox said. “It’s just adding layers of appeals that are unnecessary. This is not

resolving issues between neighbors.”

In all, zoning permits are in the pipeline for about 600 acres of cannabis in the Santa Rita Hills, while 3,600 acres are planted in wine grapes.

At the 99-acre Fiddlestix Vineyard on Santa Rosa Road, Kathy Joseph, the owner and winemaker since 1997, says she lost $80,000 in chardonnay grapes last year, after her spraying operations were found to have contaminated the Central Coast Agriculture cannabis operation next door.

Threatened with a lawsuit, Joseph said, she switched her fungicide to one that was compatible with cannabis. Her grapes did not prosper, she said, and her buyer rejected five acres’ worth.

“We are on a plateau at an extremely windy site,” Joseph said. “I’m not against cannabis; I’m against having to adjust what I do for the benefit of cannabis.

We’re trying to work with our neighbor, but they would not agree to a wind fence unless we would publicly support the land-use permit they’re applying for.

We’re being strong-armed into making it work for them.”

Joseph said the county “didn’t do its homework about the effects on long-term

existing farming … At least under a CUP, every situation would be reviewed and customized.”

John De Friel, the Central Coast owner and CEO, who belongs to a group of cannabis growers with a lobbyist in Sacramento, said the company reported the incident to the county because it was required: pesticide drift is illegal.

But as “a good-faith gesture,” De Friel said, he bought a state-of-the-art tractor equipped with vacuums and is willing to lease it to Joseph’s commercial sprayer for $1 per month. De Friel said he did not threaten to sue Joseph. He confirmed that he had offered to build a wind fence if she agreed not to contest his zoning permit application. He said he was not interested in a “one-sided deal.”

As for conditional use permits, De Friel thinks they are burdensome and would stall the industry.

In a reference to America’s most famous wine region, he said: “Santa Barbara County has the opportunity to be the Napa Valley of cannabis.”

Community rallies for seniors

On Friday, May 22, Carpinteria High School staff held a drive through cap and gown pick-up, and on Tuesday, May 26, Parents for Carpinteria High School organized the installation of flags on Linden Avenue— one for each of the 151 seniors graduating from Rincon and CHS.

Kids’ cookie stand raises dough for community

Four quarantined kids decided that loafing around the house wasn’t for them.

Instead, they got to work to help their neighbors in need. Turning lemons into lemonade, literally, Carpinteria kids Isabella Stovall, Lexi and Ailene Wheatley, and their cousin Kylie Wheatley of Ojai, set up a homemade lemonade and cookie stand to raise money for the 93013 Fund.

All goodies were free with an optional donation.

“It was a group idea,” said nine-yearold Isabella. “I got inspired by my school friends that were helping out in their hometown and I wanted to do the same.

So, I talked to my neighbors down the street (the Wheatleys) and they agreed. It felt good, because we didn’t sell anything, it was just free for donations and because little treats throughout the day can make you happy and brighten up your day.”

The kids had ridden their bikes past the Foodbank’s emergency food distribution on Wednesday afternoons at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, said Isabella’s CCOLI mom, local realtor Jessica Stovall. “We OP SUEY those long lines of cars of people who HICKENsaw needed help and the girls just wanted HICKEN to do what they could to help out in the ICKENcommunity,” she noted.

Olympic Water Polo sisters test the waters at Community Pool

Days before reopening to the public on May 19, the Carpinteria Community Pool invited a set of special guests to test the waters. US Olympic Women’s Senior Water Polo teammates and sisters Jamie, Kiley and Ryann Neushul met at the Carpinteria Pool to swim laps and do some legwork with the pool’s new superintendent Aaron Syvertson.

Having been invited by Syvertson, they were also met by staff members, Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts and Carpinteria’s Emergency Services Coordinator Mimi Audelo. As kids, they participated in the Junior Lifeguard program at Carpinteria City Beach, and Jamie, second in the pecking order, competed at the Community Pool when she was just four years old. Their mother, Cathy Neushul joined them at the pool, noting that she had once worked as a lifeguard at the local beach during her college years.

Water polo has always been in the girls’ blood, as the elder Neushul, Cathy, was a highly accomplished player and coach in her own right. Cathy was an All-American at UCSB in the ‘80s, a member of the ‘86 US National Team, and went on to become the head coach for the Gauchos in the early ‘90s.

The Neushul trio all played water polo on the South Coast of California, attending Dos Pueblos High School beginning in 2008, and, collectively, through to 2018. “All three of us have a history of swimming at the Carpinteria Pool, participating in youth swim meets and club water polo games when we were coming up through the youth ranks,” recalled Kiley (Class of ’11), the oldest of the sisters.

The Neushul sisters helped Dos Pueblos to have a phenomenal run, as the Chargers won four straight CIF championships. Kiley played on all four of the winning teams, and Jamie (Class of ’13) played on two (2010 and 2011). Ryann (Class of ’18) competed in the CIF championship her senior year.

The gifted trio next took their skills to Stanford University, where they continued to excel. Kiley once again got the ball rolling as she helped capture an NCAA championship in 2012. Later, Jamie joined her in ‘14 and ‘15 where they took home two more NCAA titles for the Cardinals, with Jamie securing another in 2017. “Training with the Stanford team and my older sister Kiley every day in the Avery Aquatics Center was incredible,” said Jamie.

Ryann helped kickstart another championship run, as Stanford won the crown in 2019, her first year at the school.

“I took a leave of absence this past year, 2019-2020, to train with the USA Women’s Senior National Team in hopes of competing in the Olympic Games in 2020,” said Ryann.

She’ll follow the powerful surface currents of Kiley who took home the gold medal as a member of the water polo squad that won the 2016 Olympics, and Jamie whose currently on the team.

Unfortunately, their quest for matching gold medals will have to wait for the time being, as the ’20 Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Our goal is to stay present and positive through this quarantine, we are lucky to have each other,” said the sisters.

“My daughters’ development and success are a testament to community members like Matt (Roberts), Aaron (Syvertson) and their staff making a difference at the grass roots levels, it really does ‘take an army,’” said Cathy.

U.S. Olympic Women’s Senior Water Polo teammates and sisters, Kiley, Jamie and ryann neushul joined their mother cathy, former UcsB water polo head coach, at the carpinteria community Pool.

Kiley neushul has won three ncAA championship titles with her water polo team at stanford University.

Also a stanford championship water polo player, Jamie neushul says training with her sisters is “incredible.”

Arts Center names poetry winners

On Monday, May 25, The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center hosted a poetry awards ceremony and poetry reading in honor of National Poetry Month. The winners of the 2020 Luschei Family Poetry Awards are: Elizabeth Roberts for children; Phoenix Seal for teens, and Anna Fortner in the adult competition. The theme of the contest was “Gratitude,” chosen by poet and contest sponsor, Glenna Berry Horton Luschei.

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

Please help protect our harbor seals for their safety and everyone’s enjoyment by obeying the city ordinance closing the rookery area and reminding visitors they can safely be viewed only from the bluff above. Volunteers continue to monitor the seals, concentrating in these times on beach watch during low tides.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seals cannot raise themselves on their front and rear flippers like sea lions. Since they are smaller and far less mobile on land, survival depends on flight to the ocean when predators appear. Predators now and historically include wolves, bears, coyotes, lions and people. Seals learn where threats are most likely to become serious, and have adapted over time to people and dogs appearing on the pier and bluff. In La Jolla, some have even adapted to people nearby on the beach, but this behavior is rare elsewhere. People and dogs approaching on the beach in Carpinteria usually flush them all, depriving them of needed rest.

There are less volunteers covering the sanctuary—most are on the beach during lower tides. A few beachwalkers have flushed the seals, and one beach closure stop sign was vandalized.

Miss Kitty

Sweet little Miss Kitty was found in an abandoned litter with three kitty siblings in the side yard of her future human companion’s friend. Today, she is a spry and fearless 10-year-old cat. For the first three years of her life she went everywhere with her human friend, who trained her to walk on a leash.

Miss Kitty is not afraid of dogs or wild animals. Once she was chased by a bobcat and as she bolted towards the house she was running so fast that she didn’t realize the sliding doors were closed and nearly knocked herself out.

Deputies responded to narcotic activity and contacted a woman who had two outstanding warrants: one out of Hermosa Beach but was non-extraditable, and the other out of Santa Barbara. The woman was arrested for the outstanding warrant out of Santa Barbara County.

A man drove into a parking lot not wearing his seatbelt. A traffic stop was initiated, and he admitted to being in possession of a meth pipe. During a search of the vehicle, his meth pipe was located, but also a baggie with 3.7 grams of meth.

Deputies responded to a call about a firearm and contacted a man who reportedly had an unregistered Kimber 1911 firearm in his possession. The firearm was taken from the man and secured into the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office property department for safekeeping.

A caller reported that she believes her laptop and credit cards were stolen by a female neighbor who lives at the Polo Field apartments. Follow up by deputies.

11:44 a.m. / Misdemeanor Hit and Run / 6500 block Rincon Road

6 p.m. / Towed Abandoned Vehicle / 2200 block Lillie Avenue

Tuesday, May 19

Deputies responded to a misdemeanor hit and run call, but the male subject fled the scene traveling southbound on Rincon Road. The man continued southbound on the northbound off-ramp of Highway 101 at Rincon Road. Deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the subject.

Deputies received complaints about an abandoned vehicle parked near Sandpiper Liquor. The vehicle was tagged and marked on Thursday, May 14. The vehicle was checked and was not moved. The vehicle was towed.

8:28 p.m. / Meth Possession / 1100 block Casitas Pass

A black purse was found at Linden and Malibu, then booked for safe keeping. The owner was not contacted.

Sunday, May 17

8 p.m. / Trespassing / 3200 block Via Real

A caller who is renting a home on the Polo Field reported that several people forced their way into her rental home and started yelling and insulting her family. Deputies arrived and contacted six people, who admitted entering the home after they were directed to come look at the damaged caused by the caller.

The caller showed cell phone video of the suspects entering the home without permission and were heard and seen yelling at the caller and her family. The husband-suspect fled across the Polo Field and did not return to the scene. A complaint will be forwarded to the DA’s office for review.

A man was cited and released for possession of an open container.

5 a.m. / Welfare Check / 2100 block Ortega Hill Road

A caller reported that his girlfriend’s 27-year-old son had a bad dream and ran out of the house naked and was last seen running towards Summerland. Deputies responded and located a man walking nude on North Jameson near Sheffield.

The man claimed he smoked marijuana with friends and wanted to go to the hospital to detox. His mother drove him to the hospital.

Mail was found scattered off a county access road by a Caltrans site. The mail

A woman and man were contacted as their vehicle was getting dropped off by a tow truck. The woman is on active probation and a search of her property showed she had meth, a meth pipe and a container of pepper spray. She is a convicted felon and prohibited from owning pepper spray. A baggie of meth was found in the center console and since no one wanted to claim it, the man was given ownership since it was his vehicle.

3:38 a.m. / Dope Violations / 4100 block Via Real

A woman and man were in a vehicle with a stolen license plate, reported to Santa Barbara Police Department. A traffic stop was initiated, and it was determined the vehicle was not stolen, but was rented a few weeks ago by the woman. She thought the “PERM” on the Arizona license plate meant it was only a “permit” for the vehicle and not an actual license plate. So, to avoid getting pulled over, they placed a stolen plate on the car, she said. After a search of nearby motel rooms associated with the subjects, they, and the woman’s sister, were cited for possession of stolen property, meth and paraphernalia. Further investigation will be done for the fraudulently obtained EBT cards.

Goats worked the hilltops, and people flocked to the beach over Memorial Day weekend in and around Carpinteria. Two months of stay-at-home orders and a loosening of restrictions brought people out en masse, but the numbers of Covid-19 cases—while dropping—are not gone by a long shot. In the inevitable reopening of society, individuals will have to take their own health precautions moving forward.

California’s car camping getaways

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham It’s the mobile basecamp transporting you to hidden natural wonders, where time slows down and the only set schedule moves along on its own course.

You’re just along for the ride because you chose to be there, making the drive with enough provisions to see you through on your car camping excursion. All you need is for happenstance to deliver, but when you put yourself out there into the unknown, expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride while soaking in the many surprises at some of California’s best car camping locales.

AnzA Borrego Desert stAte PArk – Being that it’s California’s largest state park at 600,000 acres, vanishing from the mainstream and into the desert isn’t that difficult. Biodiversity is where it’s at in this unique arid transition zone where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts converge and fortified on its northern fringe by the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Anza Borrego is named after the 18th century Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza (that must’ve been a helluva slog) and Borrego, Spanish for sheep, as in the nimble desert bighorn sheep that thrive in the steep, craggy canyons. If the state campground isn’t your bag, there’s plenty of places along nameless tracks for an authentic desert experience. It’s all on offer amongst the fan palm oases, desert iguanas, ocotillo, seasonal arroyos and daunting badlands. ca.parks.gov

50 miles in any one direction, so go over that gear list before heading out to what is also known as “California’s Serengeti” for its herds of pronghorn antelope, Tule elk and black-tailed deer. If there’s one item not to forget before venturing to the Carrizo Plain, it’s a pair of binoculars.

The grasslands are teeming with other wildlife, the most endangered species in the Golden State. Some of those include the giant kangaroo rat, San Joaquin kit fox, antelope ground squirrel and blunt-

These peaks offer some amazing views, certainly a different and more grand perspective of one of the most unique National Parks in North America.

Heiderrich celebrates 90 years of a good life

Carpinteria resident Wilma Heiderrich turned 90 on May 23. Heiderrich was born in 1930 and has lived in Carpinteria for five decades, moving to town with her late husband Fred in 1972.

Known for her keen memory and zest for life, Heiderrich can be seen every morning at 6 a.m. walking “in a zig-zag pattern up and down our cul-de-sac,” said friend Mary McWhirter. “Wilma is sharp as a tack,” said McWhirter, “remembers everything.”

In addition to exercise, Heiderrich volunteers at the Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum and “enjoys a cocktail … a couple of times a year” with her friend, said McWhirter.

Going green with Dave’s Organic Gardening CVN

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P The stay-at-home order has made most of us aware of how we want to improve ourselves, our homes and what lies just beyond our windows. Enter Dave Hunsaker, the owner of Dave’s Organic Gardening. His 20 plus years of experience with lawn and gardens dates back to a landscaping business in Austin, Texas, before moving to the South Coast in 2012 to pursue the trade with an organic twist.

With over two decades of experience, it turns out that the best business advice he’s received came from home. “Most recently, my wife reminded me to, ‘do what you love, and the money will follow!’”

Currently serving Carpinteria, Goleta and Montecito, pop on his blog for helpful tips on roses, how to handle your lawn during a drought, and compost FAQs. Or better yet, hire Dave and his crew to reuse up to 80 percent of your green waste through mulching or composting by recycling your grass and “using organic fertilizers and organic approaches to pest problems and plant disease.” He also does garden consultations where he’ll inspect your garden, landscape and sprinklers and give you a recommendation on how to make your green space more organic and eco-friendly.

When I asked him, what makes his business stand out, Dave listed several unique aspects that set him apart from others. First, he said he hires “guys that are plant and soil geeks that have education around plants, soil and horticulture, and permaculture,” and then he pays his employees to become certified green gardeners and advanced certified green gardeners.

Second, he said he only uses products that “are certified by the OMRI (Organic Reviewed Material Institute) and have an environmentally sound plan for dealing with insects.”

Third, Dave’s said he works “with soil to remediate it and bring the biology back… using permaculture techniques to enhance the soil and health of plants.

And finally, he composts. Dave said, “I compost green waste (or turn your garbage into gold) and reduce your carbon footprint.”

Dave and his team also specialize in rain catchment systems, installing rain barrels, tanks or underground systems.

“We install rain gardens by capturing as

much water runoff as we can,” he said.

“This creates a small wet weather pond that slowly seeps back into the soil, stimulating flowers and other bee-attracting plants.”

The key to Dave’s business success is teaching employees and clients the benefits of gardening organically. Things like IPM (Integrated Pest Management) or soil remediation, the act of renewing damaged soil.

When it comes to a trade secret, his tip may surprise you. “Worm castings are magic! Your soil and plants love them,” said Dave, quoting gardening book authors Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis. “Worms unlock chemical bonds and make (the castings) seven times richer in phosphate, have 10 times moreavailable potash (an alkaline potassium compound), five times the nitrogen, three times the usable magnesium, and one and half times higher in calcium.”

For Dave, continuing education in your desired field is essential. “Learning doesn’t stop with the end of classes,” he said. “Keep studying and researching what you’re passionate about.”
