HopeNet presents online observance for Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month

In lieu of HopeNet of Carpinteria’s annual in-person Candlelight Vigil in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, the organization will host an ongoing virtual observance during the month of September. The observance will celebrate those lives that have been lost or who have struggled with depression and suicide.

“Find hope while listening to stories of some of our community leaders,” noted the organization in a statement. Guest speakers via video include: U.S. Congressmember Salud Carbajal, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams, Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura, Carpinteria City Council member Fred Shaw, Carpinteria/Summerland Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Roberson, Santa Barbara Response Network founders Anthony Rodriguez and Jina Carvahlo, who is also director of communications and public relations at the Glendon Association, and HopeNet of Carpinteria Vice-President Dr. Deborah Smilovitz Foster. AYSO postponed

AYSO announced this week that its program would not start in the next couple months. “Despite slightly relaxed guidance at the state and county level regarding youth sports,” said Dan Runhaar, AYSO regional commissioner, “we don’t have all the approvals, time and resources needed to proceed.” Santa Barbara and Ventura have also cancelled and postponed their AYSO programs.

This week: 70 new cases of Covid-19

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 70 new cases of Covid-19 this week countywide. The new cases bring the county total to 7,869 confirmed cases and 89 deaths.

The South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria have had 173 confirmed cases and six deaths related to Covid-19.

In total, the county has tested 112,460 individuals for the novel coronavirus.

Two men arrested in Summerland stabbing

On Aug. 12, at 12:41 a.m., Sheriff ’s deputies responded to a report of a stabbing victim at a local hospital. When they arrived at the hospital, deputies were directed to a victim who had a significant stab wound to the upper body. Deputies later determined that the stabbing had occurred at a hotel in the 2100-block of Ortega Hill Road Jose Hernandez in Summerland. Criminal Inves- Adrian Xavier Hernandez tigations Bureau detectives and Forensics responded to the scene of the stabbing for further investigation.

Detectives conducted extensive follow-up on the case and quickly identified two suspects, 55-year-old Jose Hernandez and 24-year-old Adrian Xavier Hernandez.

Both men were located in the city of Santa Barbara and taken into custody. Jose was booked at the Main Jail for felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault with great bodily injury and felony attempted murder with a bail of $1,000,000. Adrian was booked at the Main Jail for felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony accessory with a bail of $30,000.

The victim was briefly hospitalized and is expected to recover. Detectives are not searching for any additional suspects.

“Touring with the Candidates” cancelled due to Covid-19

Due to impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic and increased legal risks, the city of Carpinteria has decided to not sponsor production of the “Touring with the Candidates” video for the current election cycle.

Traditionally, the video provides City Council candidates with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the community while touring Carpinteria with a videographer. Although the city understands that the video is appreciated by many members of the community, the current context presents risks that would make the video’s production impractical and imprudent, stated a release from the city.

In future election cycles, the city may consider partnering with community organizations to engage in a “get out the vote” campaign, which may include the “Touring with the Candidates” video or a similar video production.

“The city appreciates our residents understanding the situation and hope they will take every opportunity to get to know their City Council candidates and to vote on Nov. 3, 2020,” said City Manager Dave Durflinger.

Obituaries Jose “Joe” Luis Hernandez 9/28/1953 – 7/18/2020

Jose “Joe” Luis Hernandez, native Carpinterian, passed away on July 8, 2020. He is survived by his wife Julina Hernandez of Vallejo; his two brothers Rafael “Ralphie” Hernandez and Victor Manuel Garcia of Oxnard; his nieces and nephews Mario and Leticia Robinson of Oxnard and Victor Jr and Christina Garcia of Carpinteria.

Joe was a world class thoroughbred exercise rider and trainer. He was blessed to ride some of the best thoroughbreds in racing. He rode at Churchill Downs at the Kentucky Derby, Pimlico, Saratoga and many other racetracks across America.

He retired from racing in 2018 at Golden Gate Fields. He said that when he got to heaven he wanted to ride Secretariat and Citation. Enjoy the ride my beautiful brother!

The family will hold a small service given by Father Martini at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 at 11 a.m.

For those who would like to attend, please wear the appropriate face coverings.

As friends of Mary Campanele, we would like to let you know of her peaceful passing in her sleep on July 29, 2020.

She almost made it to 101 years of age.

Mary was very active with the Carpinteria Seniors, the Carpinteria Museum of Natural History, the Carpinteria Host Program, the Senior Lunch Program, and the First Baptist Church. She was a friend to everyone and always with a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed.

We don’t know of any service or memorial to celebrate her, so remember her in your own way.

Measure U

The summer modernization projects at Aliso and CHS are complete. Furnishings have been delivered and teachers can now organize their beautiful new classrooms. At Canalino, the six interim portables on the playground are being removed and the asphalt slurried and striped. Modernization for the old CHS administration building which will house the new CHS Student Success Center is 77 percent complete. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in October. Modernization for the gym began July 1 and is now 20 percent complete.

Interim housing has been provided to CHS administration staff in the temporary portables at the front of the school.

Interim locker rooms have been created on campus in the old woodshop as well as a portable classroom behind the gym.

The new Carpinteria High School Student Success Center will be housed in portable classrooms until the renovation of the former administration building is completed. The Measure U team has submitted the revised Summerland preliminary concept review to the County Architectural Board of Review and anticipates a second meeting in September.

This review is required prior to approval of the Coastal Development permit. In addition, the architects are designing the detailed plans in preparation for submission to the Division of State Architects.

The Measure U Team will be providing an update to the community and the Board at the Sept. 22 meeting.

Everyone feels the strain

All generations are being upended by the chaos of the Covid-19 contagion.

Preschoolers to college kids are struggling to adjust to remote learning, feeling deprived of friends and missing out on the college experience. Young adults can’t gather in restaurants and bars.

If they haven’t lost their jobs, adults may be working from home or balancing homeschooling with job obligations. Senior citizens can’t enjoy their grandchildren or the volunteer activities that gave them joy, self-worth and socialization.

Those in retirement and nursing homes can’t have the visitors who are their lifelines.

One thing we can do is practice kindness. From Hamilton’s “The Five Side-effects of Kindness”: 1) It makes us happier as it elevates our dopamine levels and gives us the natural high or “Helpers High.” 2) It is good for the heart as it releases the hormone oxytocin throughout the body and lowers blood pressure. 3) It slows ageing by releasing that same oxytocin, which also reduces levels of free radicals and inflammation that affect the cardiovascular system, reducing chances of heart attacks and strokes. 4) Relationships are improved as we are genetically “bonded” to each other as humans to have a better chance of survival. 5) It is contagious as we “pay it forward” and create a ripple effect. Contaminate each other with mental droplets of common humanity.

Don’t forget to be kind at work. Set up email coffee breaks with kind greetings and appreciation. Make Zoom meetings respectful by paying full attention, turning off your phone and realizing that colleagues may be dancing as fast as they can.

Be kind to each other and be alert to signs of mental stress in yourself and others. Without mental health there is no health.

memory with the first responder. Dealing with these critical emergencies may negatively impact fire personnel from the effects of post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI). Left unchecked, PTSI can lead to depression, significant other problems and even suicide.

So, where do the helpers get help in time of need? The Santa Barbara County Fire Chiefs Association has been proactive in providing our members with outstanding mental healthcare. Many of our firefighters have accessed the At Ease Program, which is a non-profit organization formed to assist first responders with post incident stress and other counseling services. Lives have been changed for the better through leading-edge therapies provided by the At Ease Program. As a veteran of the fire service for over 33 years, I am pleased to see how this aspect of firefighter safety has evolved.

These conversations are occurring across the nation and, last week, the CUSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to add a multi-cultural literature course to the high school curriculum.

However, multiple public comments at recent board meetings insinuated that a CUSD board member is racist.

The comments were in response to board member Andy Sheaffer’s remarks highlighting the importance of improving reading proficiency to achieve racial and social justice. Only 52 percent of CUSD third-grade students were reading at grade level in 2019. And the proficiency rate among students identified as Hispanic or Latino was less than 43 percent. This is a serious problem. Literacy proficiency

in third grade is recognized as a major benchmark predicting future success.

Third graders who can read proficiently are four times more likely to graduate from high school on time than their peers who are struggling.

I commend the zealous pursuit of social justice, but baseless attacks detract from the cause. Though we often do not align on political issues, I admire Andy’s character. We serve together in Rotary, we partner to support Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and we’ve worked together professionally on several occasions. Andy has been a strong proponent of Girls Inc.’s early literacy and college-bound Eureka! programs, which enrich the lives of socioeconomically disadvantaged and minority students.

Our community is lucky to have Andy as a leader on the school board. He cares about the wellbeing of others, listens, educates himself, is empathetic to diverse perspectives, expresses his opinions thoughtfully and works incredibly hard to positively impact the lives of children.

Andy, thank you for your commitment to improving public education in the Carpinteria Valley, including advocating for a learning environment that is equitable for every student.

I was thrilled to find out that my friend, Natalia Alarcon, is running for Carpinteria City Council. I’ve had the honor of knowing Natalia for over 20 years. I met her in the fourth grade, and we became instant friends—since then, we have experienced many milestones together including: graduations, birthdays, weddings and much more. This provides me with deep insight as to why she would be a great city council member.

The fix is in this November election, only it’s not by mail-in voters as Ms. Edwards hypothesizes in her recent letter (“Disputed results,” CVN, Vol. 26, No. 48). Rather, it is Republican conspiracy memes that, like the president, want to sow dissent and chaos prior to the election so they can dispute the results before the election has even taken place. Her statement that “there is no way to validate (mail-in ballots)” is substantively and factually wrong. All mail-in ballots in every state and territory undergo strict scrutiny to verify voter ID, including date-of-birth, Social Security Number, address, and, most importantly, signature. These are matched to voter registration rolls, and any questionable ballot is set aside as provisional until verified.

This is simply another tired rightwing conspiracy theory, that the president continues to promote, as usual, unfounded in even one bit of fact, to malign perhaps one of our most meaningful institutions upon which this Republic was founded, namely our presidential election. Curiously, in 2016, several states that had significant mail-in ballots and were won

by Trump reported no identifiable fraud and no dispute as to the results; the same applies to states that were won by Hillary Clinton. This directly contradicts the continued patently false statements of our president (who votes by mail, as do many of his supporters), that mail-in ballots are fraught with corruption and fraud and cannot be verified.

The truth is out there, plain as the sky is blue (albeit hazy these days). In this time of pandemic insecurity, I will vote by mail, as will many others of all political stripes, to protect our health and exercise our inalienable rights under our Constitution. The ugly uncertainty is whether there will be a peaceful transition of power as has occurred during the prior 244 years of our democracy.

In last week’s paper, an article highlighted Westerlay Orchids’ weeklong fundraiser (from Aug. 1 to Sept. 5) for Carpinteria Education Foundation. The article stated that Westerlay would be donating its retail profits; however, Westerlay will be donating its entire retail revenue. Carpinteria gets clean energy boost with new big battery project

Construction has begun on a new renewable energy resource project in Carpinteria in the unincorporated Santa Barbara County area near Foothill Road and Linden Avenue.

The big battery project, known as the Vallecito Energy Storage Resilience (VESR) Project, is expected to provide foundational resilience to the portion of Santa Barbara County, including the Carpinteria Valley, which is served by Southern California Edison (SCE)—a highly vulnerable grid area known as the Goleta Load Pocket (GLP).

The entire region, from Point Conception to Lake Casitas, is currently dependent on one point of interconnection to the transmission system at the Goleta Substation, located at the top of Glenn Annie Road. With a 40-mile-long transmission path that begins in Ventura and traverses the heart of extreme fire, mudslide and earthquake risk zones on the backside of the Santa Ynez mountains, the GLP is extremely vulnerable to a transmission outage. Moreover, after reaching the Goleta Substation, electricity must then travel back down to Carpinteria via a web of distribution lines. Additionally, SCE has reported that the grid will go down at some point, and when it does, it could be out for days or even weeks in Carpinteria.

Proponents hope that the VESR will not only provide resilience for the South County, but also “stage a Carpinteria Community Microgrid that includes critical community facilities like the nearby

Carpinteria High School, an official Red Cross emergency sheltering site,” as stated in a letter of support addressed to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors and signed by the Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter, Community Environmental Council, Carpinteria Unified School District and Carpinteria Valley Association (CVA), among other local environmental and community-based watchdog groups.

VESR is expected to provide more reliable and resilient grid services to the Carpinteria region. “Reliable means the

grid won’t go down,” said Craig Lewis, executive director of Clean Coalition, a nonprofit organization that has spearheaded the initiative, “and resilient means that when the grid goes down, which will happen at some point for various reasons, certain loads—especially those in critical facilities—will stay on.”

In addition to increasing the reliability and resiliency of the electricity grid, Clean Coalition’s mission is to accelerate the transition to renewable energy on a modern grid. Along with VESR, Clean Coalition is working to install solar panels

at Carpinteria High School and the office park near Bailard Avenue, sites that have been identified as having the potential to generate 13MW of solar power.

Similar staging of solar microgrids and electric vehicle charging infrastructure has been implemented at schools throughout the Santa Barbara Unified School District, and Lewis hopes that Carpinteria schools will be able to benefit from the groundwork already established

Stephan Franklin mixes the best of business and BBQ CVN

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P After Stephan “Steph” Franklin of Simply Marvelous BBQ received his master’s degree at Southern Illinois University, a job as a residency director at UCSB brought this South Side, Chicago native to the West Coast. But it was in college that his love for BBQ began.

“I got into grilling during college just because it was a cheap way to eat,” Franklin said. “I’m a fisherman, too, so the very first thing I ever smoked was fish. Actually, Barracuda.” He soon added other proteins, such as turkey during the holidays, and by 2006, his reputation for good barbeque had evolved into the launch of his own business.

When asked about managing the business, Franklin said that the best business advice he received came from his mother: “She was worried about me quitting my day job to open up a restaurant, which was smart, because the market crashed in 2008.” His mobile barbecue business requires less overhead to run than a brickand-mortar restaurant or only focusing on high-end catering (although Simply Marvelous BBQ offers high-end catering, too). “And I still don’t have a restaurant, which has been a saving grace during this pandemic.”

The catering side of the business is on hold currently due to the pandemic, but Franklin’s multi-prong business has sustained him. Aside from catering, which is only half of the business, Franklin curates BBQ spices under his name and sells custom-made dry rubs and spices for other companies. For example, Franklin’s curat-

So much so, she’s listing the burger on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” this year.

This kind of attention makes sense, considering Franklin has 25 Grand and Grand Reserve barbeque championship titles under his belt. He’s won in the chicken, ribs, pork butt and brisket categories where judges look for appearance, taste and tenderness. Simply Marvelous BBQ’s combination of signature rubs, unique spices and perfectly cooked meat has Stephan Franklin’s name—and BBQ—on the lips of barbeque judges and chefs from coast to coast.

All the accolades aside, Franklin has still experienced some racial bias as an African American business owner in California. “Maybe prior to me putting a

picture of myself on the website,” Franklin said. “I would meet some clients, and I wouldn’t get a call back. Now, I don’t worry about it because they know what they’re getting into.”

What makes his BBQ stand out from others is his eclectic style. “We don’t focus on Texas or Kansas City style barbeque,” Franklin said. “It’s based on everything we’ve meshed over the years to come up with our own style.” As far as the key to his success, it’s all about the details.

“Understanding flavors, and having experience,” he said.

Franklin explains that having another job when he first started out was extremely helpful because he was able to reinvest money he made from barbecuing back into the business. “I could afford to (purchase new equipment) because I had a different job (to pay the bills),” he ex-

plained. Advice he’d tell his younger self would be to watch who you hire because they become the face of your business.

“Now, you have Yelp and Google reviews that can hurt your business, even if it isn’t your fault.”

According to Franklin, patience is key when starting any business. “Take your time and do it right. Don’t rush.”

He also affirmed that if you don’t have the passion for your business or line of work, don’t even start. “It’s hard work and you’ll get burned out.”

“Battery storage projects, large and small, are signs that humanity does have a future,” CVA Vice President Jim Taylor told Coastal View News. “Already, a gas peaker plant in Oxnard was cancelled in favor of storing the energy for times of peak demand. That’s less natural gas burned, and less carbon added to the atmosphere. Ultimately, local generation of electricity from solar panels, and local storage of the electricity produced, will help us achieve energy reliability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

When the VESR project begins energy output at the end of 2020, it will be the first utility-scale battery project within the GLP. Plans have already begun for four additional utility-scale battery projects in the area—with one located a quarter mile from VESR—that are expected to come online by March 2021.

Changing childcare landscape leads to increased reliance on youth centers CVN REPORT

With Santa Barbara County still on partial lockdown to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, Carpinteria Unified School District launched a school year like never before this week. Campuses are empty, and teachers introduce themselves to new students remotely. Families must balance childcare, distance learning and work. Public education, the ever-dependable mode of childcare, is closed for in-person attendance.

This jolt to the steady rhythm of family life (summer is over, it’s back to school!) impacts each household differently, but for some households going without public schools can come with considerable consequences. In addition to education, schools provide structure, support, nutrition and safety.

Principal Jamie Persoon of Canalino and Carpinteria Family schools said some home situations do not translate to successful distance learning, and the student population in these homes faces greater risks of falling behind academically. High-density households might not have the literal bandwidth to support multiple computers connected to virtual classrooms. Even if the school district provides computers, there remains an access problem for many students in the district.

Persoon said, “The inability to keep up with instruction will have disastrous effects in the short and long term in terms of educational progress. Each year, in order to be successful, students need to master grade level standards to be ready for the next grade. This prolonged period of remote learning is going to have reverberating effects for a long time to come.”

To fill in the gap for households that cannot adapt to school closures, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and United Boys & Girls Clubs have begun offering out-of-school childcare, which extends hours from the typical afterschool programs to full-day care at these youth centers.

Between the two programs, there is capacity for 154 students. During school hours, the students attend class on laptops issued by the school district.

Students are supervised and provided technical and academic support. After school hours, these youth centers offer homework support and enrichment

activities that are tailored to physical distancing. Surfaces are regularly sanitized, everyone has masks and gets daily health checks.

“Girls Inc. will be able to provide a safe and secure campus that allows the girls to focus on the most important thing—getting an education,” stated Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. “We will be serving two snacks every day and are working on incorporating lunch as well, so that every student receives adequate nutrition.”

Girls Inc. has created classroom spaces with desks six feet apart. For every 10 students, there are two instructors, and everyone maintains physical distance whenever possible. The youth center is now hiring additional childcare staff to expand to full day service for up to 70 children. Students use CUSD-issued laptops and receive both technical and academic support from instructors.

Carpinteria’s Boys & Girls Club has adopted a similar model to Girls Inc. that employs safety measures while providing support during the school day. The club has the capacity for 84 students, and the cost to attend is $150 weekly from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendance is free between 3 and 6 p.m.

For preschool-aged students, Carpinteria Children’s Project has capacity for 48 and uses similar best practices to protect from Covid-19. Outdoor play and enrichment time for the mostly three- and four-year-old students is increased to avoid enclosed spaces.

Fundraising to support childcare

The issue of parents needing childcare during the pandemic is not unique to Carpinteria. The childcare crisis has been a persistent health and economic issue throughout the United States. The local youth-serving nonprofits have been raising funds to provide scholarships for the families hit hardest economically by the pandemic. United Boys and Girls Clubs canceled its annual fundraiser last May, and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria canceled its Women of Inspiration luncheon, also scheduled for May. In lieu of its annual fall fundraiser, Bloom, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria launched

Xitlaly Perez Zooms into her class from a safe desk space on the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria campus. a month-long virtual fundraiser on Aug. 24. Teams have assembled to seek $25,000 each toward the overall goal of $250,000, which will be directed at scholarships for out-of-school care.

Also, this summer, 93013 Fund turned its focus to scholarships for childcare. The local fund administered by Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset Charitable Foundation has sought to raise $50,000 and split the funds between youth-serving nonprofits in Carpinteria.

“The whole country is facing a childcare crisis, but we believe Carpinteria can do better,” said Hans Brand, president of the fund. “Our goal from the beginning of the pandemic has been to soften the blow on Carpinteria, and we believe that the

Slice tomatoes in desired thickness and size. Mine are usually about a ¼ inch thick. Arrange the tomatoes on top of the pesto.

Crumble ricotta and top the crostatas with shredded Parmigiano Reggiano.

In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix one cup of flour with salt and sugar.

Cut the cold butter into pea sized pieces and add to the flour mixture.

Mix butter and flour together for about a minute on medium speed.

Add remaining flour and continue mixing another minute.

Add the water and mix until incorporated.

Form the dough into a disc shape and wrap in plastic.

Refrigerate for at least one hour.

Cut the dough into six equal pieces.

Then form each piece into a disc sized shape. Lightly flour your surface and the tops of each disc. Roll the dough into six circles about ⅛ inch thick, and six inches in diameter. Then fold the edges over about a ¼ inch all around the outsides, crimping to keep closed and to form a crust. Set them on a sheet pan fitted with parchment paper, and chill in the refrigerator.

When I clip them off their vines, I remind myself to look around and really appreciate nature, like Jerry Garcia might have...

A great way to showcase beautiful tomatoes is on a crostata with pesto. Crostatas are the Italian version of a French galette, or an open-faced pie. You can make them sweet or savory and fill them with just about anything.

For this crostata recipe, I chose a pepita pesto because pepitas are delicious and more affordable than pine nuts. You can take the money you save and indulge in some high-quality cheeses or a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio.

I really love this method for making dough because it’s foolproof. You can double or triple the recipe and freeze some for later use without worrying

When Coastal View News moved out of its coveted retail space on Carpinteria Avenue to a new office on Via Real, Zelda Prune of Angels Antiques did not miss a beat. Within weeks, she and her business associate Jonathan Brandan of Goleta’s Garage Gems were finalizing plans with property owner (and art collector) Keith Stein to open a new store, Space Home & Garden, which will have its soft opening this weekend.

The new home and garden shop is a carefully curated selection of home and garden furnishings, vintage lighting, original art, pottery, books and more, “chosen with you in mind, so that you can create a ‘space’—uniquely your own,” said Prune. “Basically, cool stuff you won’t find everywhere else.”

Space will act as a showroom for Prune and Brandan, who both have extensive collections with items ranging from antiques to mid-century modern to contemporary used furniture. Brandan specializes in fabricating, upcycling and industrial furniture, along with vintage, mid-century and contemporary home furnishings. Prune’s forte is in decorating and design for interior and exterior spaces. “I’m hell bent for primitive, organic and mid-century modern,” she said.

“Anything unique.” And don’t forget to add to the mix vintage surfboards hand selected by Wayne Babcock, Prune’s partner at Angels.

The shop will also serve as a gallery space, highlighting artists in rotating exhibitions. The first artist to be exhibited will be photographer Matthew Hawk.

Space, located at 4856 Carpinteria Ave., will host a soft opening this Friday to Sunday, Aug. 28 to 30, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will open to the public again over Labor Day weekend. Artesanía para La Familia makes literacy a priority

In keeping up their focus on childhood literacy, Artesanía para La Familia delivered books to Carpinteria children on Thursday, Aug. 20. Artesanía para La Familia hopes to resume its in-person Saturday literacy program in January of 2021, public health and safety permitting.

“Mask Up Carp” takes it to the streets

“Mask Up Carp” is a public art campaign that communicates the importance of wearing a mask to slow the spread of Covid-19. Volunteer artists of all ages and skill levels will be assigned a sidewalk square to decorate in chalk to encourage widespread mask wearing in the continuing pandemic. The artwork will take place on three consecutive days: Thursday, Sept. 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, Sept. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Health and safety are the goals of the campaign, and strict guidelines will be followed to protect artists, volunteers and the public. Squares will be distanced from each other, masks and gloves will be required and the public will be discouraged from gathering to watch the artists at work. Artworks will be completed by noon on Saturday so that pedestrians can view the art over Labor Day weekend.

Artists must register by email to lea@2trumpets.com by Monday, Aug. 31, for the free public art campaign. Registration materials, including chalk, gloves and a mask, can be picked up between Sept. 3 and 5 at the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave. For more information, visit @MaskUpCarp on Instagram, or click on the Mask Up Carp link on the city’s homepage, carpinteria.ca.us.

School campuses across Carpinteria have been hosting drive-by and walk-up meet and greets for students and their families as they launch into the new school year, which will begin with 100 percent online instruction. This year, students are receiving welcome bags with books, supplies and computers—everything they need to brave the new world of distance learning. While students are excited to receive their new materials, their biggest smiles are from meeting their new teachers and hearing about projects and lessons they have to look forward to.

Sweet Mountaintop’s flowers: beautiful and medicinal CVN

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Mary Gonzales is well-known by many weekly shoppers at the area farmers’ markets. Offering a refreshing variety of field-grown flowers and medicinal herbs, this farmer has found a niche with her home-grown business, Sweet Mountaintop Farm.

Sweet Mountaintop Farm grows their two-acres of herbs and everlasting flowers in-between the avocado orchards of Rincon Mountain. Gonzales grows herbs for medicinal healing in several forms—from fresh herb bundles to dried herb varieties and blends. Gonzales also makes hydrosols, essential oils and tinctures, fresh plant matter infused in organic alcohol that is potent and used for aromatherapy.

“Some products are for external use, some for internal use,” said Gonzales.

“Some people prefer to take medicine through the skin using herb infused body oils. Others who prefer not to drink tea may want to try a tincture. We have different ways to prepare medicine to be accessible to all sorts of people.”

Sweet Mountaintop also makes garlands with strawflowers, known as a type of everlasting flower that dries well. The everlasting flowers are fashioned into various products such as wreaths, jewelry and flower crowns.

Gonzales’ interest in herbs was something she came to intrinsically, she noted.

“There are signs everywhere that draw you in. You dream about it and wonder why you are so interested. Maybe you’re drawn in because it’s your life path.

Maybe that’s why I’m here and that is my purpose.”

Before starting her own farm, Gonzales used to be a baker in Los Angeles.

Along with a couple friends, she traveled around to meet people in funky spaces and different living situations. After moving back to Carpinteria, Gonzales co-authored “A Tiny Mess,” with Maddie and Trevor Gordon. “A Tiny Mess” features recipes and stories from people cooking in their small kitchens in boats and trailers. “I was living in a little 22-foot travel trailer, and then I moved back to this area to live on a trailer on my dad’s farm,” she recalled. “Growing up, I always helped out at the farm for my dad. We worked out a deal where I exchanged work for rent so I learned how to do irrigation for the farm and to prune the avocado trees.

I had a plot for my own garden and I just became addicted and fell in love. It’s hard not to be so in love with it.”

On being a farmer and owning her own business she remarked, “it means relying on all the elements, it means time investment and money investment and gambling with the seasons and the

You don’t get time off. You have to take care of your animals; the plants need to be watered; there are plants to be harvested.

Then you need to figure out where to sell all your stuff… It’s something no one can explain to you and you can’t understand until you own your own business and experience it for yourself. So, we rented a couple acres off my dad’s property and we took off from there.”

Gonzales now seeks to provide the same learning experience for others.

Sweet Mountaintop now has an internship program where they teach women how to farm and grow medicine. “I want to give women a chance to learn how to farm,” she said. “You have a lot of women up here and everyone is excited and there’s so much energy. It makes me excited to work. The farming market feels like such a masculine environment, and it’s hard for women to get jobs as farmers.

I think times are changing. People are realizing it’s important to shift the energy.

We were the keepers of life and it’s an

important role to maintain.”

Gonzales has accumulated her repertoire of herbal knowledge through self-taught learning. She commented, “I’ve learned so much from books. I also believe in following intuition, your inner knowing, ancestral remembrance and being with the plants. You can’t learn much unless you are around the plants. I get knowledge from the plants just by having a daily ritual around them and growing plants on a larger scale. Your plants are your biggest teachers.”

For Gonzales, it’s important to understand that herbal medicines require time and consistency, but they can provide many benefits to whole body health.

“People want instant results and it’s hard for them to remember that,” she said.

“There are herbs that are stress relieving, herbs that will help you adapt to stress, to help you sleep, to not get sick, to help your respiratory system… We grow a lot

of varieties used for multiple purposes.

Unlike individual prescriptions, one herb has so many medicinal properties. People are used to taking one prescription for each symptom, but with herbs, each plant has a wide range of benefits.”

Gonzales recommends starting with one herb at a time to feel it out individually. “It’s important to know what you’re working with,” she said. “You have to create that relationship. It’s like being in a new relationship where you have to get to know somebody and spend time with them.”

Day tripping in Port San Luis

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM The launch off the secluded beach was nearly effortless, nary a ripple lapped on the sand in northern Avila at Port San Luis Harbor. Protected by a long rocky jetty extending out to the south, the calm waters were a safe haven for several species of marine mammals best observed from the seat of a kayak.

Wildlife Watching

As Holly Lohuis and I paddled our kayaks off the shoreline and through a maze of anchored boats, a raft of southern sea otters wrapped up in a dense canopy of giant bladder kelp, fastidiously grooming their dense fur, the thickest in the entire animal kingdom. Their pups, adorned in light brown fluff, rested on their mother’s bellies, as they too were groomed by their attentive moms—all the while nursing above chilly waters.

As we floated in our kayaks and marveled at this keystone species, the pull of nearby bellowing California sea lions was too much to resist to the immediate north. Piled atop a floating dock, the eared pinnipeds hauled out, soaking in the morning sun as we glided by and eventually beneath the Harford Pier.

Holly and I aimed for guano-covered Smith Rock. Another small raft of otters enjoyed the lee of the broad rock face, sharing it with several sleepy surf scoters, seabirds that migrate down from Alaska.

Squadrons of California brown pelicans roosted above on its craggy crest. Below them was a pair of black oystercatchers standing watch over their two fuzzy black chicks. They momentarily revealed themselves before vanishing underneath the security of their mother’s wings. It was a busy day on and around Smith Rock.

Whales Cove

Beyond crowded Smith Rock was Whales Cove and the long jetty that stretched over a half mile into open ocean.

The jetty was loaded with barking sea lions. A couple of solitary sea otters lazed in the shallows off Whales Cove, a perfect place to land kayaks and standup paddleboards, walk the beach and have lunch.

It was also a nice pit stop to continue north on foot. At the top of the wooden staircase was a scenic overlook of Port San Luis. We enjoyed stellar views that extended from Avila Beach all the way south to the Guadalupe – Nipomo Sand Dunes National Wildlife Refuge and rugged Point Sal.

From there, Holly and I made the easy stroll up the paved road leading to the historic Point San Luis Lighthouse, a nice diversion in between our out-and-back day trip of kayaking. Construction of the lighthouse finished in June 1890, following several significant shipwrecks. We learned that the lighthouse was unique in that it is the only surviving Prairie Victorian lighthouse remaining in existence on the entire West Coast of the U.S. Interpretive areas revealed the history of the region dating back to Chumash Indians who once thrived in the area and eventually leading up to the current restoration efforts. We were free to explore the grounds of the lighthouse, but access inside the light station required a docent.

It was another fantastic place to have lunch, swing on a swing and listen to the surf crash on the wave-battered bluffs below.

Back on the Water

As we returned to Whales Cove, perpetual northwest winds had increased.

The convenient tailwind allowed us to simply glide and float past Smith Rock, as we barely paddled to where we began.

The sea otters were especially active on our return. Where the moms groomed and nursed their mewing pups, there were a few young adults that broke the peace of rafting otters. Rambunctious, somersaulting and jostling, the young otters plowed into napping parents, forcing dispersal from the security of the kelp forest.

Once the otters settled down, they always returned to the canopy, wrapping themselves in the long strands to maintain position, especially in the increasing northwesterly winds.

sturdy pilings of Harford Pier, past raucous sea lions before banking left and our launching locale, one of the best kept secrets along the Central California Coast requiring just a short paddle north.
