State extends residential eviction moratorium

On Jan. 29, Governor Newsom signed legislation to extend the state’s residential eviction moratorium through June 30, 2021. Senate Bill 91 extended the eviction moratorium that was set to expire on Jan. 31, 2021. SB 91 pauses evictions for residential tenants who declare, under the penalty of perjury, an inability to pay all or part of their rent due to Covid-19 related reasons. Although tenants are still responsible for paying unpaid amounts to property owners, those unpaid amounts cannot be the basis for eviction, even after the moratorium ends.

SB 91 also establishes the State Rental Assistance Program to allocate the $2.6 billion in federal rental assistance that California will receive from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. The state also allocated additional state funding to the Program through SB . he program will target aid to income- uali ed tenants with unpaid back rent who are most at-risk. Financial assistance also will be extended to property owners who agree to waive 20% of unpaid rent. The program will begin accepting applications from tenants and property owners in March, and local agencies, like Santa Barbara County, can choose to administer their own programs.

Rental assistance grants now available

Residents of Carpinteria who have lost income due to the Covid-19 pandemic may be eligible for rental assistance through the Covid-19 Emergency Rental Assistance program administered by United Way of Santa Barbara County. A total of $890,000 is available for eligible applicants throughout Santa Barbara ounty who meet speci c requirements. The funds were made possible by the county through federal CDBG grants. If approved, families can receive a maximum of $5,000 of rental assistance over three months. Payments would go directly to landlords to ensure the assistance goes directly to rent payments. Overturned big-rig collision shuts down Hwy 101 northbound

On Feb. 2 at approximately 4:55 a.m., a solo vehicle collision occurred on U.S. Highway 101 northbound, south of the Santa Ynez Avenue over-crossing involving a 2013 freightliner tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer, driven by Martin Garcia, 24, of Mexicali, was traveling northbound approaching the over-crossing when it made an unsafe turning movement and veered to the right upon the roadway. The tractor-trailer collided with the guardrail and with the side portion of the concrete over-crossing.

The truck continued in a northeasterly direction across the right shoulder and through a fence which separates the northbound lanes from residences in Carpinteria. The tractor came to rest within a private driveway on Cramer Circle and the trailer came to rest on its left side upon the right shoulder of Highway 101 northbound. Garcia sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Northbound lanes on Highway 101 near the accident were closed temporarily while the accident was attended to.

Vaccine appointments available in Santa Maria for county residents 75+

Santa Maria’s Marian Regional Medical Center announced on Jan. 29 that it has Covid-19 vaccination appointments available for Santa Barbara County residents who are 75 and older. Only eligible Santa Barbara County residents aged 75 and older and health care staff are eligible to receive the vaccination at the Santa Maria medical center. Carpinteria State Beach campground reopens

With the Regional Stay at Home Order lifted, California State Parks has reopened Carpinteria State Beach campground sites for existing reservation holders. Additionally, a phased approach has commenced to reopen other campground sites for new reservations. Hass Avocado Board bans animal experiments

After PETA and more than 85,000 of its supporters urged the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) – a major agricultural commodity research and promotion board overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) – to end animal testing, HAB has adopted a groundbreaking new public policy that it will no longer “support, fund or conduct animal research.�

HAB has sponsored tests in which experimenters force-fed mice a high-fat diet, repeatedly force-fed them a substance found in avocados, starved them for eight hours, injected them with glucose and insulin, repeatedly bled them from their tails, suffocated them, drained their blood and dissected them. “PETA thanks the Hass Avocado Board for adopting a history-making new policy that will spare animals abuse in cruel experiments that are irrelevant to human health,� said PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA urges other agricultural commodity check-off boards to use superior, non-animal research, including the .S. ighbush Blueberry Council, which beheaded animals for tests regarding blueberries.�

Radis honored by Carpinteria Beautiful

Longtime community volunteer Maire Radis has been recognized

by Carpinteria Beautiful as the organization’s 2020 Volunteer of the Year.

Radis was honored for the many hours she spent in 2020 removing litter and debris from both Santa Claus Lane and the beach itself.

Carpinteria’s popular public places had more litter than usual in 2020 due to heavy public use caused by Covid-19 closures at other beaches.

With the occasional help from family, Radis estimates that she removed over 200 large bags of trash from the roadway and beach.

To celebrate the award, Carpinteria Beautiful board members toasted adis and presented her with a photograph by en Pfeiffer of the very dunes at Santa Claus Beach that Radis “has labored so hard to keep clean,” said Bryan Mootz, the organization’s president.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Maire for doing her part in keeping Carpinteria clean, green and beautiful.”

On Feb. 2, Santa Barbara County reported 29,009 positive cases of Covid-19, indicating nearly 2,000 new cases in a seven-day period. There have now been 303 deaths countywide from Covid-19.

In the South County communities of Carpinteria, Montecito and Summerland there have been , con rmed cases and deaths. In the city of Santa Barbara, there have been 5,276 cases and 55 deaths.

Countywide, among health care workers, there have been 1,246 reported cases; and the largest group impacted by race/ethnicity has been the Hispanic and Latino community with , con rmed cases (including in ompoc’s federal prison). here are currently , 5 cases that are still classi ed as infectious countywide, including 86 in the South County communities.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has tested 24,713 people for Covid-19 thus far. For more information, visit publichealthsbc.org.

Some student sports allowed to compete again

With the end of the Regional Stay at Home Order comes new guidance for youth sports in Santa Barbara County.

On Jan. 26, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) issued an updated map detailing which sports can resume competing now that the county has reentered the purple tier.

Low-contact sports allowed to compete include cross country, golf, skiing/ snowboarding, swimming and diving, tennis and track and eld. As for practice, any training that can be conducted outdoors with proper social distancing and safety precautions in place is al-

lowed, including for those sports that cannot yet compete.

The CIF guidelines will continue to be adjusted on a weekly basis, and are subject to change at any time depending on the level of Covid-19 transmission in the state.

Student athletes who test positive for Covid-19 are not permitted to return to practice or competition until they are cleared by a physician, and schools are required to follow all guidelines from their local county and school district.

Gray Panthers Santa Barbara Network launches new chapter

Picking up where the earlier chapter of the ray Panthers left off, the ray Panthers Santa Barbara Network has announced the formation of a new chapter.

The Gray Panthers Santa Barbara Network is a countywide volunteer, intergenerational, social and economic justice organization formed to oppose discrimination against, and oppression of, persons because of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, nationality, class and physical and/or mental challenges.

“We intend to work independently, or in coalition with other movements or organizations, to achieve social and economic justice, a clean sustainable environment, uality health care and decent affordable housing,” said ail Marshall, media contact for the Gray Panthers.

Obituaries

Mike Torres Martinez 9/16/1925 – 1/31/2021

Mike Torres Martinez, 95, passed away peacefully on Jan. 31, 2021, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara due to complications related to Covid-19.

He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. His character was dened by strong family values of faith, hard work, honesty, responsibility, respect, being thankful and getting along with others.

Mike was born on Sept. 16, 1925, in Colton, California, the eighth of 12 children born to Maximo and Sabina Martinez. His parents immigrated from Teocaltiche, Mexico to the United States, arriving in Texas in 1918. During the Great Depression, Mike’s father and older brothers followed various work opportunities from Texas to the West Coast in the railway, mining, industrial and agricultural industries. Around 1934, the family arrived in Ventura County, where Mike and his siblings attended local schools and worked in the seasonal agriculture industry. The family moved permanently to Carpinteria in 1942, where they purchased a home.

During WWII, Mike followed his older brothers in responding to the nation’s request for help and enlisted in the military to defend their country. He served in the US 7th Army, 14th Armored Division “Liberators,” 25th Tank Battalion. He was involved in combat campaigns in Southern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He fought in several large-scale battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of atten- ittershoffen, and the invasion and defeat of Nazi Germany as part of General Patton’s 3rd Army. His Division is credited for the liberation of several POW camps, including the infamous Dachau concentration camps complex. He was wounded in action six days before the war in Europe ended and received a Purple Heart.

After the war, Mike returned to Carpinteria, where he met and married Ramona Gonzales, and together they raised two sons. Mike worked in the local Carpinteria area for various organizations, including the Carpinteria Lemon Association, and then as a ranch foreman for Rancho Feliz. Later, he worked as a custodian for the Santa Barbara School District at San Marcos High School, “go Royals,” and retired after 22 years of service in 1987.

Mike then performed volunteer and parttime work for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and provided advice on the new facility’s construction.

Mike was a devoted husband and father his family always came rst. e enjoyed spending his retirement with the love of his life, Ramona, and together they enjoyed traveling, garage sales, working in their yard (a favorite activity), and visits from their family members, sons and grandchildren.

Following his wife’s death in 2012, he spent his nal years of retirement at home working on his yard before moving to the GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care community. He was a member of the St. Joseph Church parish.

Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Ramona; parents, Maximo and Sabina Martinez; siblings, Agustin (Margarite), Refugio, Albert, Joe, Lupe (Lonnie), Max and Jack; and sisters-in-law, Linda Martinez and Rosie Martinez.

He is survived by two sons, Michael (Jennie) and Thomas (Clarice); and grandchildren, Stephen (Nina) Kelly, Daniel, Jon (Heidi) and David. He is also survived by three brothers, Jess, Lorenzo and Ernest (Jennie); and sisters-in-law, Rita Martinez, Catalina Martinez and Mercy Martinez.

Due to Covid-19 and cemetery service attendance restrictions, a small graveside service will be held at the Carpinteria Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2021. The family would like to thank the Cottage ospital staff in Santa Barbara, his medical doctors at Sansum linic, and staff members of the GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care community. A special thanks goes out to the Emergency personnel at AMR and the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District. Thanks for always being there when we needed you.

Luella Zerr 2/27/1933 – 1/29/2021

Our mother, Luella Mae Draper Zerr, born Feb. 27, 1933 in Aberdeen, South Dakota died on Jan. 29, 2021 of Covid-19 related complications. After a long hard battle to remain with her family, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Living in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, she was just shy of a very healthy 88 years old. A friend to anyone and everyone, Luella showed us that friendship can endure through distance, time and circumstance. In 1954, as a single young woman, she braved the world and came out on a train to Renton, Washington where she married Steven Zerr, a widower with two children, Gary and Kathleen, who were yearning for a mother. Luella and Steven remained forever devoted despite his death in 1996.

Luella’s mother died when she was a toddler so she grew up dreaming of being the best mother and wife she could be. Her surviving three daughters, Kathleen, the eldest, Susan Bye, the one in the middle, and Luann Caesar, the “baby,” along with many grand and great-grandchildren would all agree she more than succeeded. We are comforted knowing that she will be reunited with Steve, her husband and our dad, along with Gary and Keith, her predeceased sons. We wish them all grace and glory together once again.

Carmel Ayala Ryan 7/20/1940 – 1/20/2021

Carmel Ayala Ryan of Newalla, Oklahoma and Carpinteria, California was born to Alexander and Ruby Ayala on July 20, 1940 in Los Angeles, California and passed away on Jan. 20, 2021 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Carmel was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frank Clark; her husband, Rudolph Everett Ryan Jr.; and her son, Brent Ryan. After receiving degrees from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona and the niversity of California Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California, she went on to spend most of her working years as a nurse and a teacher.

Carmel was a sister, mother to a blended family of nine, grandmother to many, great-grandmother to two, and loved by all. She loved her family and friends above all else and always thought of others and ways to enrich their lives.

Carmel truly never met a stranger. She made friends easily. Everywhere Carmel went she made friends and maintained those friendships for life with regular calls, letters, cards and gifts. She enjoyed spending most of her days talking for hours on the phone and creating handwritten letters to those she loved.

Even though she moved to Oklahoma over 20 years ago and made many new friends, she stayed in constant contact with her friends from California and other states. She was proud to still have many close friends from as far back as her school days. You couldn’t have a conversation face-to-face or on the phone with Carmel without it ending with a heart-felt, sincere, “I Love You” from her.

There will be a burial service in Carpinteria, alifornia at a later date to ful ll her wishes of being laid to rest alongside her beloved parents.

Victor Manuel Garcia 4/7/1937 – 1/1/21

Victor Manuel Garcia passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2021, at the age of 83.

He was born on April 7, 1937 in Sinaloa, Culiacan, Mexico. He was the eldest of ve brothers.

Victor was raised in Mexico and lived there until the age of 21, when he moved to Santa Barbara, California. He married the love of his life, Flora Nevarez, on Oct. 24, 1964 in Santa Barbara.

In 1972, he moved his family to Carpinteria and resided there for 36 years before moving to Oxnard. He was a cement mason and for a few years was a promoter of music, bringing Latin music to the Earl Warren Showgrounds. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed helping others throughout the years, providing employment and opportunity to learn the trade. He enjoyed supporting the Carpinteria community by donating his time to improve the local schools and the Boys & Girls Club, where he received recognition for his services. He loved socializing; he could go anywhere and not know a soul and make a friend; he could befriend anyone. He loved listening to music, especially the regional music of Sinaloa “Banda.”

He is survived by his children, Victor and Christina Garcia of Carpinteria; Leticia and Mario Robinson of Oxnard; and Hector and Michelle Garcia of Ventura; his grandchildren Elsa Alexiz Garcia, Victor M. Garcia III, Hector Garcia Jr., Mia Flora Garcia, Velen Adela Garcia and Christian Hector Garcia; his great-grandchildren Brandon, Kylie and Bentley; and his sibling Rafael Hernandez of Sonoma.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Flora Garcia, his mother, Eduviges Hernandez, and his brothers Roman Garcia, Jose Luis Hernandez and Jesus Hernandez. He will be resting at Carpinteria Cemetery alongside his beloved Flora. Private services will be held.

Andy grew up in Carpinteria. He graduated from Carpinteria High School in 2000. His parents, Tim and Melinda, worked at Carpinteria State Beach. Andy is survived by his son, Timothy W. Lowe, his brother, Gerrard Lowe, and his mom, Melinda Lowe, as well as many family and friends in Carpinteria.

Council sets work plan for 2021, discusses parking issues, redistricting for elections

BY EVELYN SPENCE The Carpinteria City Council unanimously passed its 177-page annual 2021 work plan following a four-hour meeting on Jan. 23.

The plan outlines the ongoing and future projects for Carpinteria, and is made up of three parts: a 2020 Work Accomplishments Table; a Strategic Plan; and a compilation of 2021 Department Work Plans.

During the meeting, the council extensively discussed issues relating to housing in Carpinteria, the Covid-19 pandemic, parking and paving.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has upended the nances of local governments across the nation, including the city. Measures aimed at discouraging the spread of the virus required businesses to shut down or operate under signi cant restrictions,” the report reads.

According to the report, the city has experienced a signi cant decline in state sales and transient occupancy taxes (hotel bed tax) revenues along with increased expenses related to the city’s Covid-19 response and recovery. In response to the projected budget de cit, the city has implemented budgetary cuts and is dipping into reserve funds.

The council also discussed Carpinteria’s pavement issues and how to move forward with sustainable pavement while xing already broken streets.

“We’re at a point now that a lot of our streets, right now, are failing, they were built a long time ago,” said ouncilmember Gregg Carty. “This is probably the most asked question I get as a council member, When are you going to x my street ’” Vice Mayor Al Clark also noted the struggles with the Highway 101 project, and how funding for paving projects “can only go so far.” “I’m not sure I’m willing to go for debt nancing for our streets, but we’ll have to wait and see,” he said.

Clark also brought up his concerns about Carpinteria’s downtown parking areas and the recently completed Walker Parking Study. Referencing the consensus that any modi cations to downtown parking will result in “no net loss in public parking,” lark stated that he had doubts about that statement.

“I have severe questions and concerns about the design of that study and the conclusions that were drawn,” lark said.

Prior to the work meeting, the council answered a series of questionnaire questions, which asked councilmembers to look at what they want the city to tackle.

The council also went over a plan to switch from the at-large elections method to district-based elections by 2022, changing the way the city elects members of the city council. ity Manager Dave Durflinger confirmed that a committee focused on switching to district-based elections has met a few times and said they will begin drawing potential district maps once the results of the 2020 census come back.

“Redistricting for a small city is so problematic, but we have to do it I guess,” she said.

The meeting ended with a unanimous vote to pass the plan, and Durflinger noted the meeting gave his staff “lots of good direction going forward.”

“We had some good outcomes in terms of implementing this and bringing matters to the council,” Durflinger said.

The council’s next meeting will be on Feb. 8 at 5:40 p.m. over Zoom.

Attendance increases at Carpinteria Middle and High schools, along with Ds and Fs

arpinteria ni ed School District saw an increase in attendance numbers during the rst semester of 0 0 compared to the rst semester of 0 , a “surprise” to the district, Superintendent Diana Rigby said during the CUSD board’s Jan. 26 meeting.

Attendance at Carpinteria Middle School rose from 95.85% in 2019 to 97.63% in 2020, while Carpinteria High School reported a 95.92% rate in 2019 and 98.16% in 2020.

At Aliso Elementary, attendance declined from 95.96% in 2019 to 94.34% in 2020. Attendance also declined at Canalino Elementary – from 96.37% in 2019 to 95.24% in 2020. Rates increased at Carpinteria Family School from 95.63% in 2019 to 97.86% in 2020; and at Summerland Elementary numbers rose from 96% in 2019 to 99.05% in 2020.

“What’s curious is, what we expected was that we would receive lower attendance rates this year compared to last year, and that was proven for the elementary,” igby said. “But for secondary, it’s reported that the rst semester of 0 0 has better attendance rates than the rst semester of 2019. I don’t know if that’s actual data or if it’s connected to how we’re taking attendance in remote learning, but it does surprise us.”

At CMS, those with failing grades will be “encouraged” to attend daily in-person small cohorts, Rigby said. “I don’t understand, with all the extra time that is available (...) why we’re having to force (students) to do this rather than taking it on themselves to do it,” Sheaffer said.

Contract tracing reveals no staff were infected with Covid-19 at school

Rigby said that the Updated Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools requires schools that are open with in-person instruction to post their Covid-19 Safety Plan on the district website by Feb. 1.

The board passed the six-page CUSD Covid-19 Safety plan during its Jan. 26 meeting. The plan outlines Covid-19 protocols that include cleaning processes, testing requirements and what to do in the event of an outbreak or closure of a school.

The plan requires that all CUSD employees must immediately report to their manager or supervisor if they develop Covid-19 symptoms or come into possible contact with someone who has Covid-19.

All CUSD employees are required to

be tested for Covid-19, and the district will provide all employees with face coverings.

Those with Covid-19 symptoms cannot return to work until at least 24 hours have passed since a fever of 100.4 or higher is gone; until their symptoms have improved; at least 10 days have passed since symptoms rst appeared and until their quarantine is lifted.

“We have no staff members that have contracted the disease while at school, and our nurses have done all the contract tracing,” igby said. igby added that all school staff and childcare workers fall under Tier 1B for Covid vaccines. Rigby said that vaccinations for school staff and childcare workers “may begin as early as a few weeks from now.”

Measure U funds Summerland School sidewalk

In Summerland, CUSD will begin construction on an improved sidewalk along Valencia Road and a new sidewalk along the tennis courts, connecting to Lillie Avenue, Rigby said.

She explained that CUSD is preparing a design for the Valencia sidewalk, which will be completed in approximately six to eight weeks.

“Assuming this timeline, the project should be heard by the Planning Commission by the end of March,” igby said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2021.

Additionally, at the time Alarcon was being elected, she was (and is) a generation or two younger than most council members have been, even going all the way back to the city’s incorporation in 5.

My reaction to these milestones It’s about time he .S. is still awaiting its rst female president while there have been over 5 female heads of state elsewhere in the world.

But let me get back to the symbol on the bill. If a woman does not see herself as a political leader, she simply never will be one because she will not take any of the necessary steps to get there. If arpinteria residents do not see themselves as having a voice in decisions that affect our community, we won’t even try. If a child has no reason to envision a future that includes a uality education and a successful career, that child has little chance to achieve those dreams.

In my own experience in college and graduate school, I witnessed an incredible lack of women in my “traditionally male” engineering eld, and this, unsurprisingly, carries over to my experience in my workplace. I observe that our elected and appointed government leaders at the national, state and local levels are

not representative of our population. ven local community groups struggle to nd members from all segments of our community. Deep-rooted economic ine uities contribute to these challenges. But an important factor is the limit we each place on ourselves and the roles we can see ourselves playing.

If a group of neighbors have an opinion about something in this community, and if they allow themselves to see the impact they could have, with some study and effort they can influence important decisions that affect them.

A few weeks ago, oastal iew ews featured an article about irls Inc. of arpinteria’s announcement of plans to create a dedicated S M (Science, echnology, ngineering and Math) lab. hat article uoted irls Inc. member Briana odriguez “Before entering irls Inc., I never imagined I would be interested in a S M-field career. irls Inc. has shown me that women can be e ually as successful as men in any science eld, and they have always addressed the need for more women to be involved in S M. irls Inc. explores and introduces us to new S M activities every day, and it has encouraged and inspired me to become a successful biomedical engineer.”

I hope you are as inspired by Briana’s vision as I am. I encourage you to take that dollar bill you pulled out earlier (and maybe a few more) and send it to irls Inc. of arpinteria so they can continue to expand the limits of what local youth can see themselves becoming.

arpinteria ni ed School District has announced that a plan to build new tennis courts at Summerland lementary School is in the works, thanks to a two-year grant from the Manitou Fund. he grant funds will support all design, engineering and construction costs for the new courts, which will remain located at the corner of alencia and illie Avenue. he courts will be available to students, as well as to all community members after school hours and on weekends.

STEAM powers learning at the Howard School

Preschool students at the oward School are working on their S AM skills with new toys and tools. From egos and angram puzzles to magnet tiles and blocks, the teachers at oward are making it fun to learn the foundations of geometry, problem-solving, ne motor skills and more.

S AM toys like the ones oward utilizes are also easy to replicate at home. “Parents can use any items from home to make their own S AM projects such as egg cartons, craft sticks, tooth picks, tin cans and milk cartons,” said Monica obarge, oward School preschool director. “(Parents) working together with their child will allow them to work on these concepts while being creative and bonding with one another.”

Calling the members of our City Council corrupt is the ultimate in misuse of our common language and certainly not anywhere near accurate. (See the letters to the editor in the Jan. 28 issue of CVN.) Corruption generally means personal bene t by nefarious means, like bribery. hink rump, think pstein, think Putin, think Idi Amin But arpinteria’s duly elected, barely paid ity ouncil members Pure hogwash When someone does not agree with you, it is not corruption, it’s a difference of opinion. It’s a larger view that overrides your self-centered view for the betterment of a larger population.

Land use decisions are not popularity contests. Should we just put everything on a ballot and hope for the best alk about self-interest We have citizen-established guidelines like the eneral Plan, neighborhood plans, zoning laws, public bene t, etc., which supersede the beauty contest of opinion. Sheer numbers of people yelling for or against land use decisions is not how we make decisions.

Maybe you have no idea how much work these council members are re uired to do. Individually and as a group they examine budgets, work programs, attend endless permanent and ad hoc committees, direct lawsuits, attend conferences, answer speaking engagements and hold two or more ity ouncil meetings every month, to name a few things. orruption What crap.

An honest cannabis conversation

Fact Agriculture is the top employment sector in Carpinteria Valley. Fact: All greenhouses cultivating cannabis in Carpinteria are preexisting farms. Most diversi ed into cannabis from cut flowers due to market pressures. Fact annabis farming, by law, is more environmentally sustainable than conventional agriculture. Fact: Cannabis is now legal in most of the United States. Fact: Legal cannabis is safer, better regulated and harder for minors to buy than illegal cannabis.

Opinions suggesting that cannabis farmers are some nefarious element printed in ’s etters section are out of bounds. onstructive conversations cannot tra c in fear and innuendo. ocal cannabis farmers are professional operators in a legal market. hey are neighbors and among the most involved when it comes to taking action to support the Carpinteria community.

One recent opinion compared cannabis farming to condoning opium use among children. A more accurate comparison would be if a person has a strong aversion to broccoli and hates the idea of it being farmed nearby. In that case, you’d want to work with neighboring farmers and regulators to resolve issues.

Somehow, in the case of cannabis, supercharged language becomes permissible. It only erodes trust and stifles cooperative problem solving. City Council needs to listen to public

After watching the ity ouncil meeting on an. 5, I was left with two impressions of our ity ouncil members. First, I want to thank the two council members who voted “no” on the Surfliner Inn project. I felt that Al lark expressed very

clearly the facts about why this project should not go forward. He also expressed very well the will of the people, which is rmly against this project.

What was really disappointing was the three council members (Wade omura, oy ee and regg arty) who continue to press forward despite the will of the people. hey continue to give the impression by dangling carrots that they “just want to get more information” and that “they can say no at any time.” hey give the developers the impression that this proposal is going to go forward, but it’s not. he residents of arpinteria will not let this happen. It seems that after ve years, this is a waste of time and energy for the city staff as well as the council.

And it gives false hopes to those that want to build this project. The residents of Carpinteria are not going to allow you to give lease away our public property.

I also don’t understand why the Parks and ecreation Department is so involved and seems to be pushing this project down our throats. Any legal moves or commitments by the city need to be put on hold until after the pandemic and people can actually show up at meetings and go house to house to gather signatures for a referendum to have this put on the next ballot. et’s not open the Pandora’s box of bouti ue hotels on our beachfront residential property or our bluffs.

I observed the past two ity ouncil meetings, and I am appalled by the total process that has taken place. he lengthy meetings have provided too many speci c architectural details for a so-called “concept,” and it was obvious that the hotel perception has already been approved and has a speci ed designated owner and designer. A mass of preliminary architectural design plans has been presented without going through a fundamental process of project approval by the ity ouncil, which is supposed to represent the “citizens,” “taxpayers” and “owners” of the property.

After the lengthy meetings given to the already approved designer, the public has not been given the opportunity and time to voice our individual opinions. he ity ouncil should review and then follow its legal process.

In retrospect, we the public, taxpayers and owners of the property should be given the time and priority to decide what to do with our property. If a hotel is the prime desire of “we the people,” then we should put the design up to bid by designers who meet our needs, and not the choice of three City Council members who have already decided what they want. In addition, the public comments

and larger meeting would be more desirable if more folks were in attendance, especially given the importance of this project.

I believe there are many more choices for this property which will better suit the needs of the arpinteria community, the owners and taxpayers. After we decide what we want to do with our property, then the council can elaborate on a socalled “conceptual meeting.”

Cub Scouts hold 2021 Pinewood Derby

The Pack 50 Cub Scouts’ annual Pinewood Derby was held Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Scout House in Carpinteria. Viewing was limited to scouts and their immediate families. Even with social distancing, masks, temperature taking and lots of hand sanitizer, this year’s derby was a success and the Cub Scouts are already planning their cars and looking forward to next year’s derby.

The memoir begins in New York City, where Clegg has been recently released from rehab and is thrust into the real world. He is homeless, unemployed and has to lean on friends in the city for a place to stay and food to eat.

As the book comes to a close, Clegg leaves the reader with a life lesson about addiction. Through many relapses, meetings and new relationships, he learns that there is “no recovered, just recovering.”

For Clegg, the key to a life of “recovering” is surrounding yourself with people who are also recovering. As a reader, you are taken through the entire journey of an addict and see how a person with addiction has to ght every single day in order to be sober. This memoir is worth the read and allows those who have seen or experienced addiction rsthand to gain a better understanding of addiction and to feel like they are not alone in their ght.

Carpinterians celebrate big birthdays After Larry retired, the Houdeks moved to Carpinteria, which Houdek often called, “the best move they ever made!”

Houdek has three daughters, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is a longtime member of Carpinteria Community Church and is active in the American Scandinavian Foundation of Santa Barbara.

Ginny Ashford turns 96

Evelyne Houdek turns 100

Evelyne (née Bastlin) Houdek, a resident of Carpinteria since 1987, turned 100 on Jan. 9. Houdek was born in Chicago, and after marrying her late husband Larry in 1941, she moved to White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and raised three daughters.

Virginia “Ginny” Margaret Ashford was born on Jan. 30, 1925 in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin. In 1968, Ashford and her husband Jim purchased their home in Carpinteria where she raised eight children. Known as GG by her 18 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, Ashford worked in a welding factory after high school that made parts for the US Army Signal Corps. Ashford was the only woman who worked in the factory. She met her husband James at a USO dance, and they were married soon after. In 1976, Ashford began working at

Carpinteria’s Casitas Hallmark, where she’d work for 34 years until it closed in 2010. She enjoyed putting stickers in her hair to celebrate the holidays and many might know her best as the Hallmark shop’s “Sticker Lady.”

Sunrise swimmers brave winter waters

Visit Carpinteria State Beach on a Sunday morning and you just might see a group of swimmers braving the winter water as the sun rises.

Calling themselves the Sunday Sunrise Ocean Swimmers, the dedicated group of seven comes from Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Simi Valley and Agoura. hey rst met at the Westlake Athletic Club, but after the pandemic forced gyms and athletic clubs to close, they moved their swims to the open water. Nearly a year later, they’ve been returning to the World’s Safest Beach ever since.

“Some of the triathletes (in the group) have done a race in Carpinteria and others were very complimentary about the beach and having the bouys out there, so we gave it a try and we loved it,” said Gary King, explaining that the visible bouys serve as helpful markers for the swimmers. The group is made up of triathletes, marathon swimmers and recreational swimmers alike, and they swim together as often as they can each week.

Aside from Carpinteria, the group’s go-to spots are Zuma and Ventura Harbor, but the Sunday swims have remained in Carpinteria. The group tries to avoid the word cold when describing their ocean swims, instead opting for a shift in perspective – the water is “brisk” and “refreshing,” but never cold.

A perk of the job, the trip to awaii is part of the World Surf eague’s touring schedule, but with the accompaniment of his family, o n is able to s ueeze in some uality time with his tight knit ohana. oined by younger brother and fellow sponsored surfer Parker, the pair bike to surf spots like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Backdoor and elzyland, and spend hours paddling into some of the world’s most powerful waves. “Sur ng big Pipeline is intense and gnarly and then time slows down and it becomes completely blissful,” o n said of taking on surfing’s most notorious breaks. In addition to staying in peak performance shape, it is o n’s job as a professional athlete to get lmed and photographed and to test out new e uipment from sponsors. ually important to o n’s awaii trip, however, is the memory-making, smile-inducing fun with family and friends.

feeder league known as the ualifying Series, which he rst surfed in 00 . o n was grateful for the opportunity to work but remained humbled by the current state of the world. “It’s an intense time and I’m stoked I get to compete again, but holding (hope) for everyone that ovid is still affecting whether it be illness, lack of work or family,” said the surfer.

With the contest wrapping up just before hristmas, the kind-hearted surfer was able to focus on family time. ogether, the o n crew spent the holidays on the orth Shore. o n is known for his master chef skills, cooking up drool-inducing creations with his family. e has even started an ingredients garden at home in arpinteria, allowing him to source close-to-home ultra-fresh greens and herbs for his kitchen creations. And when not in the kitchen or in a barrel of a wave, o n has been known to croon out a tune, and has strummed alongside elly Slater in the past.

Appreciative of the opportunity to safely contest surf, o n is just as thankful for the family time spent in awaii. If you have to work, that’s not too bad of a place to do so.

Running it back

Locals buy back Channel Islands Surfboards

Channel Islands Surfboards (CI) never left Santa Barbara and Carpinteria, but it just never felt the same after legendary shaper Al Merrick sold his surfboard empire to snowboard titan Jake Burton in 2006.

However, the tide has turned and since Jan. 1, 2021, CI is back in Merrick’s hands – Britt Merrick, that is. With the help of longtime employees and team riders, Al Merrick’s son Britt has bought back the iconic surfboard label. Britt will continue a surfboard building legacy born and bred in 1969 in a dank back alley on Anacapa Street, tested along point break-rich Santa Barbara County, and on the back of a kid named Curren – former three-time world champion Tom Curren, that is.

“It marks the beginning of something that means so much to me, my family and all those that have worked so hard at Channel Islands Surfboards for the last 51 years to make it what it is,” said Merrick, lead shaper and designer for the Carpinteria-based company. “Our passion is to enjoy making great surfboards and in turn help people have beautiful experiences in the surf. We realize that a good board can make for moments of true happiness – and that’s a valuable commodity in today’s crazy world.”

Britt has been a shaper since 1990, beginning under the tutelage of his dad.

However, in 2003, Britt said he had a higher calling and became a minister at Reality Church. He retired from his ministry duties in 2019, but during that 16-year stretch he still maintained a hand on the planer and the shaping bay was always nearby. Nevertheless, Al sold CI to Burton in 2006.

Burton purchased CI at the height of its reign with Kelly Slater in the middle of winning 11 world titles and a throng of other international and elite local surfers such as Dane Reynolds, Bobby Martinez and Lakey Peterson carving their own paths at elite levels. After battling cancer, Burton passed away on Nov. 20, 2019.

Suddenly, the door was open, but only for one name to buy it back.

“When Jake Burton died the conversation was opened up,” Merrick continued.

“As far as Burton was concerned, CI was his passion project and without his presence it became a discussion. They (Burton’s family) were only interested in selling it to us though. They wanted to see it come back to its roots.”

The return of CI to the Merrick family also opened the doors for longtime local employees to partake in ownership.

“The opportunity for longtime employees and some of our best-known team riders to become owners in a surfboard brand they’d already helped create is really special,” said Anderson.

“To have surfers like Dane Reynolds, Lakey Peterson, Yadin Nicol, Parker Coffin and the Gudauskas brothers on board as co-owners adds tremendous value and insight that will help us continue to innovate, inspire and remain on top as a leading surfboard manufacturer.”

And although Al and Terry Merrick have no involvement and no investment in the buy-back of CI, needless to say, they are thrilled the company has returned to the family.

“My mom and dad are super stoked to see it come full circle,” Merrick said.

“It was always their plan that I would take over CI, but when I was called into the ministry they were forced to sell to Burton. So, they are super stoked to see it come back.”

Now that CI has been bought back, what does the next chapter look like? All things point upward, including a recent reader survey by Australia’s Stab Magazine that selected CI as their favorite surfboard manufacturer for 2020.

“We just want to continue to be profitable and grow the company incrementally,” he said. “We want to provide a good life for our families and a positive experience for our employees, community and surfers.”

An inn and a couple homes interrupt the farmland of 1920s Rincon.

Editor’s note: Lima beans rose and fell. An asphalt mine and airports came and went.

Corporate headquarters checked in then checked out. One draw to Carpinteria however, remains unchanged even as decades roll from far-off future to way-back past: the beaches. This nugget of Carpinteria history was written by Lea Boyd and originally published in the Summer 2016 edition of Carpinteria Magazine.

Both defeat and delight have sprung from that haughty expression, that jog of coastline that snags swells and separates Santa Barbara and entura counties. hese days the ueen of the oast’s biggest claim to fame belongs to sur ng. he northwest swells that wrap around her cobblestone point to form perfect, right-hand peelers have made her arguably the best surf spot in the entire surfcrazed state. But wave riding isn’t the rst chapter in incon’s story. amed “ a inconada” by a member of De Anza’s expedition, the point already had served as a humash village for thousands of years prior to the arrival of uropeans.

In 5 , the infamous bandit oa uin Murrieta buried a treasure near incon reek. Murrieta stashed loot up and down the coast, and rarely was it recovered. But in this case, the son of the man robbed of the jewels successfully unearthed them years later. incon and the sea cliffs to the south stymied coastal travel for decades. Stagecoach drivers between Santa Barbara and entura timed their trips around the tides.

A low enough tide provided just enough sand to trot along the beach before rising waters closed access again.

By the 0s, the railroad was working its way along the coast. Dynamite blasts carved out a bed for the rail lines along incon, but when automobiles arrived on the scene, there was still no place for a roadway connecting entura and arpinteria.

A wooden causeway over the sand offered a temporary transportation solution. he elevated roadway made of eucalyptus planks opened in , nally offering a route south of incon Point. In , the state opened a permanent road after constructing massive seawalls and moving tons and tons of earth to create a bed for the new north-south artery.

Rincon County Park opened in 1972. may have been colored in the telling and retelling, but legend has it that the property straddled the county line in a most advantageous way. Santa Barbara ounty lawmen would show up for a bust, and all the bathtub gin-drinkers would hightail it to the safety of the entura ounty side. he scene switched when the entura law showed up.

By the 0s, beach cottages had begun to spring up along the periphery of incon Point while strawberry elds still occupied the bulk of the land. he ensuing years saw more and more development on the shore as north.

Sur ng legends Bob Simmons and oe uigg pioneered the point in the 0s, returning home with tales of incon’s picture perfect waves. ther members of the young surf tribes in os Angeles and San Diego started making the trek north to sample the highly touted break as the sport gained popularity. enny ater, now a long-time arpinteria resident and all-time great surfboard shaper, recalls sur ng the fabled point in a time when wetsuits and leashes remained inventions of the future. ater and the rest of the small collection of blue-lipped surfers burned tires on the beach to stay warm between short sessions. “ n a really good day, maybe there’d be 5 guys in the water. hat was a

crowd,” ater says.

In the last 50 years, the freeway widened, the number of homes on incon Point multiplied and the crowd of wetsuit-clad surfers bulged. he ueen had proper parking lots built in the 0s to replace the line of cars along the side of the highway. A gate went up in the 0s to restrict access into the private community of homes on the point. he point’s most recent chapter in the news starred a decade-long battle over the conversion of septic systems to sewer lines. Proponents argued that the switch would result in cleaner seawater, but opponents said the expensive project would pave the way for more development.

Popularity hasn’t left the ueen any less magical in the minds of her fans, and her proud geography will continue to make her the object of much attention.

She may be tamer now than when hosting a rollicking brothel or when Murrieta hid his gold, but she still has the allure of unrevealed secrets.

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON If you feel stuck at home during Covid, a sure way to lift your mood is to encourage nature to come to you. At our house, we have a variety of bird feeders, a bird bath and a small fountain that I can watch from our kitchen window. Each day, we see a predictable parade of regular visitors, and occasionally a few surprises.

Birds, like us, have routines. They have favorite dining spots and places they like to rest and lounge. They wake up hungry, in need of fuel. For years now, a tightly bonded pair of white-breasted nuthatches shows up every morning. If the feeder mix is lacking sunflower seeds, they chide me with their nasal “wha wha” call that I can hear from inside.

“I’m on it,” I yell, rushing out to add sunflowers to the mix. hey wait in the upper branches of a big, old pepper tree, then climb down head-first in classic nuthatch fashion. Each grabs a seed and dashes off.

Birds have food preferences. In our hanging and platform feeders we offer a premix of seeds with millet, milo, wheat, cracked corn and sunflower. Sunflower seeds are favored, so I buy extra to augment the mix. There are two kinds – black oil and striped. he black oil sunflower seeds are thin shelled, easier to crack open and the kernels have a high fat content, valuable for winter birds.

Mourning doves, band-tailed pigeons and red-winged blackbirds will eat white millet, milo and wheat. They are messy eaters spraying seeds everywhere.

Ground feeding birds like sparrows and towhees pick them up.

For the finches – Lesser goldfinch, house nch and pine siskins, I have nyjer or thistle seed. yjer feeders are mesh socks. Birds pluck out the tiny seeds with their sharp beaks. Flocks of nches congregate like colorful ornaments hanging off the feeders.

Lately, I have been buying dried mealworms for protein for insect-eaters. They attract secretive wrens. I’m hoping for

We have two extra-large nectar feeders (1:4 sugar to water) called “The Big Gulp” for our Anna’s and Allen’s hummingbirds.

Regular washing of feeders to avoid fungus is essential. All feeders and water sources need occasional cleaning to avoid spread of disease. Keep an eye on the poop levels and give them a good scrubbing.

Location matters

Where you put your feeders and bird baths will determine how many birds you attract. Birds need protective cover where they can watch and wait. They have pecking orders, so some get rst dibs while others wait their turn. They make sure the coast is clear before they dart in to feed and must watch for predators like Cooper’s hawks or cats lying in ambush.

Try to think like a bird about escape routes. Our feeders and baths are by a fence covered with dense jasmine and passionfruit vines so birds can flit in and out. Avoid putting feeders near vegetation that could hide waiting cats.

Water to drink and bathe in

All birds need water to drink, and many love to bathe. Yet birds are sensitive to becoming dinner while bathing because they are heavier and slower when wet.

They often bathe at dawn and dusk even in winter. They prefer shallow water, only a few inches deep, that they can wade into. Hermit Thrushes are lovely skulkers who come out in the evening gloom to splash vigorously in our pedestal birdbath before hunkering down for the night.

Hermit thrushes overwinter before returning to mountain forests to breed.

Their spotted breasts and rufous tails distinguish them. If you are lucky, you might hear a note or two of their haunting song usually reserved for spring.

Dark-eyed juncos with their little executioner hoods and white flash of tail feathers also spend summer at higher elevations and come down to our area in fall. They like to hang out with whitecrowned sparrows, another winter bird.

On cooler days, it’s as busy as LAX around the feeders. The regulars feel like old friends and the silhouettes of hummingbirds taking a long, last drink are the nal enchanting vision of the day.

Watching birds in your backyard can be a private pleasure, or you can contribute to citizen science with eBird (ebird. org). John Callender, who leads our Carpinteria bird group said, “I’ve entered more eBird lists from my backyard – 224

of them – than from any other location. A lot of that has been during the past year when I’ve been birding from home a lot more. I was surprised to nd that my backyard list is now 87 species.”

Later this month, you can help create a global snapshot of how bird populations are doing with the 24th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count that runs Feb. 12-15.

The website birdcount.org explains how to participate. Last year, backyard birders spotted 6,492 species in 194 countries.

Birds need a constant source of water, food and shelter from enemies and the elements. If you can provide these in your backyard, you will not only help birds survive the lean times of winter, but you will also be richly rewarded by their beauty and behavior.

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM When I rst saw him, I felt sorry for this island fox. I thought to myself, how is he going to survive on the island Behind the gear site for kayak trips at Prisoners arbor on Santa ruz Island, this runt of an island fox was desperately trying to keep pace with his mom and much larger sibling. As his mom and sibling thrashed through the thick, tangled patch of blooming island morning glory, the runt gave it his best shot, but had to turn back and was left behind. owever, there was something about this little guy that I’d never experienced before with other island foxes. As the weeks went on, he managed and survived. ow, seven months later, it’s safe for me to say that he has the best personality and forages better than any other island fox I’ve seen. hat’s 5 years and counting of uality time spent with island foxes.

As summer morphed into fall, this little island fox grew up and stuck to his regular route at busy Prisoners arbor on the northside of the largest islet off the alifornia oast. is routine consisted of just about every terrain on the island scaling oak trees, rambling up and down steep coastal cliffs, foraging cobble beaches, hydrating at the freshwater estuary and running amok on a playground of kayaks. he rst night I saw him on his own, he ripped up and down the oak tree just above my cooler and camera pack. e straddled an upper limb and swatted playfully at my head. I turned on my headlamp and ran my hand along the limb as he tried grabbing my fingers while rubbing his face and bushy ears on the branch. is in uisitiveness has never wavered, and his rambunctious behavior has forced me to engage in games of chase initiated by this cinnamon-colored rascal, the smallest canid in orth America. ne early evening back in September, I was tending to some kayaks. he Island Packers ferry was long gone, and all was uiet at Prisoners arbor. A healthy lemonade berry bush stands tall just north of the kayaks, and as I was xing a handle

After growing tired of the kayaks, he proceeded to annihilate a strand of tattered giant bladder kelp he had retrieved from the beach, rag-dolling it on a grassy patch behind the kayaks.

It didn’t end there. After I nished with the kayaks, I laid down in the grass he was rolling around in. I belly crawled to within a few feet of him, as he playfully dove at me with the same mischievous look my pup, wen gives me when it’s play time. We rough-housed until it was almost dark before I wandered off to my tent for the night. arly the next morning, before the sun came up, I was awakened by some scuffling around my tent. I sat up and found the same rascal peering into my tent, just the mesh separating us. he island fox bounded off a few yards displaying that playful sidle run with a cockeyed bushy tail following his spirited gait.

As uickly as I could I grabbed my camera and spent the better part of three hours photographing his boundless antics. e led me back over to the kayaks where he rag-dolled everything kelp, fennel, dormant coreopsis, and then nally an unlucky mouse. In all these years, I’ve never seen an island fox with a mouse, a main staple of their omnivorous diet. e caught it in the rocks above the cobbled beach and proudly sauntered

I think I could’ve stayed with him all day and followed wherever he went. ater that day, after the boat left for the mainland, I went for a run out to Pelican Bay. early nished with the out-andback route, I had returned to the lookout cabin overlooking Prisoners arbor. ust

After chewing and thrashing everything else, the bungees on the kayak get their turn.

as I was rounding the cabin, out sprang my island fox friend, as I nearly stumbled over him. e did a 0-degree pivot and then ripped down the trail like his tail was on re. I tried keeping pace but I’m just not as nimble as an island fox.

I knew where he was headed though. e was bounding across a row of kayaks.

Again, I laid down in the grass as he playfully darted back and forth at me. Finally, he bounded north to what has become one of his favorite foraging locations, a thick, damp bed of leaf litter under an oak tree above the cobble beach. e spends good amounts of time there enjoying insects, berries and seeds evident in his scat along the way. e does this up to three times a day, a reliable food source and I’ve never seen any other fox there except him. And after he nishes feeding there, he traverses the steep cliff to a marine terrace, signaling the end of the day.

Sometime soon, the new pier will be nished and kayak operations will return to Scorpion Anchorage, seven miles southeast of Prisoners. I’m going to miss our interactions with each other, those fleeting, happenstance moments, but I’m forever grateful for the time spent.

Schneider family focuses on flowers, expands Dirt Botanicals’ retail space CVN

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N The Schneider family has been an integral part of the Carpinteria community for many years. Their family business, PacWest Blooms, provides event coordination services for weddings including floral arrangements. In the past few months, they’ve pivoted their business model to organizing pop-up markets for local makers and expanding their retail store offerings at Dirt Botanicals.

While she was developing PacWest Blooms, Suzie Schneider created Dirt Botanicals, her soul project and Carpinteria’s only brick-and-mortar floral shop.

Dirt offers a retail space for houseplants, succulent arrangements and workshops, and as the name suggests, you are supposed to get your hands dirty. When the pandemic hit last year, events fell off the calendar, allowing the Schneiders to put more energy into pushing Dirt as a retail space.

Brian Schneider, Suzie Schneider’s son, has always been involved in the family business, but it wasn’t until this past September that Brian decided to leave his job at Events By Rincon and partner with his mother in establishing Dirt Botanicals as its own thriving business. In the past six months, he has managed Dirt’s dayto-day operations.

“I always enjoyed what my mom does and how plants and flowers bring joy to people,” said Brian. “It’s always been the human aspect of the business that hooked me. The more I worked with plants, the more I realized how much I cared about them. Plants are living organisms and you develop a relationship with each individual plant. You grow from caring for other living beings and you learn which plants work well together and it’s

Brian has always had a love for plants, flowers and botanicals. “Cut flowers have been in my life for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Before my mom

started PacWest, she was working with floral growers so I would see (flowers) packaged at the greenhouse. Or, I would spend time with my family at our grandmother’s garden. My grandmother has always grown these beautiful flower beds or vegetables, so gardening was a huge influence on me growing up.”

It’s all in the family at Dirt Botanicals.

Suzie is the owner and main designer. Brian’s grandmother, Barbara, is the “plant encyclopedia.” Brian’s aunt helps with designs and workshops, drawing from her experience working for a local florist, and Brian’s dad handles the company’s accounting. During the busy season, even Brian’s cousins and sisters will help and his brother often bartends at makers events. “We work well together and we can bounce ideas off each other. It’s a whole family affair,” Brian said.

The Schneider family works well together because they recognize the importance of building each other up and supporting one another. “It’s been really

great to see the people I love and look up to in this professional light – as capable individuals – and being able to contribute to their accomplishments,” Brian said.

“The work is rewarding to me, as well as knowing that my hard work is supporting my family.”

Brian approaches his work from a value-based rather than goal-oriented perspective, emphasizing the importance of love and intention. “People call in with great stories about the person they are buying a gift for and I want to convey that love and appreciation (in the gifts we create),” he said.

This year, amid the pandemic, the Schneiders have expanded their pop-up makers markets which they host regularly. “For both Dirt Botanicals and PacWest Blooms, who we are is the community,” Brian said. “We consider ourselves makers and we want to uplift those around us and our community. So many people have lost opportunities recently. We want to give them a space and help to revive people’s livelihoods.”

Without community support, Brian said his family wouldn’t be where they are today. “We are Carpinteria born and raised with such a deep appreciation and love for what it means to be a Carpinterian,” he said. “Anyone can open a floral shop, but we want to be the community floral shop – one that makes a contribution to the community.”
