Community Partners in Caring recently launched “Miles of Smiles,” a free rides program for seniors. The new program will provide rides to seniors throughout Santa Barbara County to help residents have increased access to basic needs, such as medical appointments and the grocery store.

While the program has been launched, the organization is urgently seeking volunteer drivers. Volunteers will receive mileage reimbursements. To sign up as a volunteer, go to partnersincaring.org/volunteer.

Fishing boat sends “Mayday”

A Ventura fisherman called for help off Carpinteria’s coast on Sunday night after his vessel began taking on water, Tracy Lehr of KEYT reported earlier this week.

The fisherman, TowBoatUS Captain Carson Shevitz, broadcast a “Mayday” over a VHF radio around 7:23 p.m., Lehr reported. The search was led by Captain Paul Amaral with the assistance of a helicopter. Amaral located the boat roughly five miles off the Carpinteria shore and brought the individuals back to the Ventura Harbor.

Via Real Physical Therapy relocates, changes name

Via Real Physical Therapy has moved locations to the Albertsons shopping center next to Starbucks (5432 Carpinteria Ave.), rebranding with the new name “Carp Physio.” The business will celebrate its new chapter with a reception on Saturday, March 19, at 11 a.m. with champagne, treats and challenges to win prizes.

Padaro Lane property on sale for $109M

A 4.221-acre Padaro Lane oceanfront property with access to a private beach has been listed for $109,000,000 by Compass, Montecito. “A renowned historical Carpinteria horse ranch sited in a celebrity-studded enclave,” the real estate listing states.

“This is the last large beach estate on the Southern California coast and sits directly on famous surf break Loon Point.”

Located at 2937 Padaro Lane, the estate is owned by the grandson of late Beverly Hills oil tycoon Arthur A. Cameron and Hollywood actress Kay Aldridge, the Sacramento Bee reported. “(It) hit the market Wednesday for $109 million, making the Carpinteria, California residence one of the top 20 most expensive homes for sale in the world, according to Compass real estate firm,” the Bee stated.

Covid-19 test positivity rate drops to 2.2%

The Covid-19 test positivity rate within Santa Barbara County dropped to 2.2% late last week, with a case rate of 4.41 per 100,000 residents.

At the winter case surge earlier this year, the case rate peaked at 264.6 per 100,000 residents, for comparison.

“We have waited a long time to be where we are today: Covid-19 cases have dropped significantly; deaths and hospitalizations are low; and restrictions are loosening,” Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura said to the city in a newsletter Saturday. “It’s too early to stop being cautious, but it’s not too early to expect an almost normal spring and summer.”

As of March 14, 67.7% of county residents are fully vaccinated; 72% of residents eligible to be vaccinated are vaccinated, with 781,173 doses administered so far.

As of Monday, there 19 people are hospitalized in the county with Covid-19.

Two more people passed away due to Covid-19, as reported on Monday; both were older than 70 and had underlying health conditions. One lived in the city of Goleta, and the other in the city of Santa

Barbara. Total deaths reported within the county are 664.

Obituaries

Edward “Bub” Francis Damron 9/8/1937 – 3/4/2022

Edward Francis Damron, better known and loved as “Bub” Damron, passed away on Friday March 4 at 4:20:35.27 p.m. – Bub would want his final time recorded accurately on a garage wall somewhere. His passing occurred in his home in Ventura, surrounded by his wife and children, following a brief bout with colon cancer. He was 84 years young.

Bub was born in McCamey, Texas to Edgar and Nora Damron September 8, 1937. Together with his four siblings, they made several moves when Bub was just a toddler and in 1943 eventually arrived in the place, he would always call his hometown: Carpinteria. The sleepy little seaside town and its lone constable had no idea what had just descended upon them. Together with siblings Bob, Patsy and Nellie, Bub and his 15-month-younger twin brother Jim set about disrupting Carpinteria with more unpunished misdemeanors and underage malefaction as they could laugh and brag about. The stories of Bub and Jim’s hijinks are legend amongst his family and friends and too voluminous to enter here.

Upon graduating from Carpinteria High School in 1956, Bub drove the train, painted the Snowman and made Date shakes at Santa Claus Lane before heading to Visalia Junior College, and then UC Santa Barbara. He left before completing his degree, after he got a job driving a lumber truck at the only company he would ever work for: U.S. Plywood. Over the next 45 years, the company changed its name four different times and Bub was promoted along the way from the

loading docks to regional sales manager.

His office was his car as he drove his sales territory from Paso Robles to Bakersfield and into Los Angeles County. Bub retired in 2004. In that time, Bub claimed to have never taken a sick day, a fact he bludgeoned his children with at every sniffle, and a fact his wife would quietly dispel as less fact than legend.

Bub met his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Lynn in 1957, when she moved to Carpinteria for her senior year of high school. They married less than two years later. Together they raised four children and made their home on the west side of Carpinteria on Ocean View Avenue.

When Bub wasn’t working, he was attending every baseball, basketball and football game played (or cheered at) by his kids. He never missed a game, once even hitching a private plane ride and jogging a mile from the airport in desert heat and dress shoes to make a playoff baseball game in Rosamond. Later you could find him at any of his grandchildren’s sporting events he could get to, from coast to coast.

In his “free” time, Bub was an avid jogger, completing marathons and 10k’s – even running 40 miles on his 40th birthday. He was an exuberant DIY-er and completed many home improvements with little professional assistance. He was asked to serve on the Carpinteria School Board of Trustees and did so honorably for 14 years (1976-1990), refusing to actively campaign for re-election during that entire tenure.

In his retirement years, Bub loved traveling in his trailer, fixing things around the house, and comparing his home-grown tomatoes to those “abominations” bought in stores. When Bub and Carolyn sold the house on Ocean View, they moved to Ventura within walking distance of his eldest son and his young family. Despite the move, Bub always described himself proudly as a Carpinterian and a Texan.

Bub is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his children Jeffrey (Cyndi), Michael (Susan), Matthew (Kelly) and Kymberleigh (Eric), his 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Saturday, March 19, in the pavilion at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to the Carpinteria High School Boosters Club at P.O. Box 444, Carpinteria, 93014.

Jason “Coach O” Oatis 4/23/1959 – 2/17/2022

Jason “Coach O” Oatis had his own personal rapture on Feb. 17, 2022 and fell immediately into the arms of his savior, Jesus. When he got there, he heard, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”

Raised in the church, he found his church home in Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara, where he served for many years.

Jason was born in Monroe, Louisiana and moved to Santa Barbara at the age of two. He attended McKinley, Franklin, Santa Barbara Junior and Senior High School, and then Mesa College San Diego, where he was a music major. He then completed his teaching credential at UCLA. In true Jason style, he met his future wife Judy on the playground when he was subbing, while both worked at Montecito Union School. It was a whirlwind romance, and they were married 10 months after they met. Their two children, Matthew and Rachel soon followed: their pride and joy.

Jason was quoted as saying, “I believe we all have an opportunity in life to make life better or to help someone. My hope for all of us is when we have the chance, we will take it.”

Jason took many opportunities to invest in people. He was a physical education teacher at Santa Barbara City College, Montecito Union, Santa Barbara Christian School, Carpinteria High School, Cold Spring Elementary and Canalino Elementary. In his early years, “Coach O” worked in both track and football with the San Diego Stars Track Club, UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College.

director. He passionately enjoyed seventeen years at Cold Spring Elementary and twenty-seven years coaching track and field at Westmont College.

Jason volunteered at a variety of events and in many ways at Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara, from the “Bible Buck Store” to the security team and with his Bible Study group. He represented Cold Spring School as the safety coordinator with M.E.R.R.A.G. and was always known for helping a neighbor in need. Carpinterians all knew his smile from his daily walks.

Another quote from Jason was, “It’s not about me.” He lived out his faith on a daily basis. He found others to be the focus of his life’s passion, from God to his amazingly lovely wife, Judy, to spending time with his compassionate, honest and hardworking children. They enjoyed trips to Kauai and dreamt of living there. Jason brought back Kauai Sugarloaf pineapple tops and proceeded to propagate them into a hundred pineapple plants. He loved working in his garden and built his own koi pond. The family spent time fishing, did extended family camps at Lake Casitas, where he was proud of the one big fish he caught. He loved his Hoka shoes, which allowed him to walk everywhere. He would pray at the drop of the hat for anyone.

“Coach O had an effervescent smile, a contagious laugh, and a heart that brimmed with encouragement and acceptance. The testimonies to his influence on attitudes and life enhancing conversations are legendary and beyond count,” his friend, Coach Smelley said about him.

Jason is survived by his wife Judy, his son Matthew and daughter Rachel; his mother Mrs. Clevonease Johnson; sisters Mrs. George Etta Milam and Mrs. Berna Oatis-Larson; and many other extended family.

To his former students, athletes, family and friends he would want you watch the movie “Galaxy Quest” and recall: “Never give up, never surrender! ”He would also want you to remember Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

A celebration of life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on March 27, at Murchison Gym, Westmont College, located at 955 La Paz Road, Santa Barbara. Hawaiian attire and carpooling are encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritans Purse or Destined For Grace.

No access to rookery via beach

As a Sealwatch volunteer, I have noticed that some people think they can access the rookery viewing area via the beach. With this in mind, let’s direct our friends, neighbors and visitors to the trail along the bluffs to the rookery overlook area just to the east of the Chevron pier. I think people are often confused because the signage is inadequate. However, if visitors approach the rookery by the sand, all the seals will flee in a rush into the water. At this time of year, the moms and pups are often separated when this occurs and do not reunite. This is a terminal situation for the pups. The harbor seals have chosen this spot to have their pups for over 100 years. I personally think we share responsibility to protect them.

There is a city ordinance citing no entry via the beach between the dates of Dec. 1 and May 31. This ordinance comes with a fine of over $10,000 if perpetrators are apprehended. All marine mammals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1973, which also carries a hefty fine. There are also those who deliberately pass the city signage on the beach, but that is another story. There are also those who get off the trail and believe that there is legal beach access to the rookery. Let’s clear this up so we can protect the seals’ boundaries for future generations.

Faith in Nomura and Lee

Let’s face it, drawing a districting map that contains equal populations in each district is challenging. The city’s third-party consultant did a good job and presented options for fair representation for our city.

Some people have stated that there must be gerrymandering as Pacific Village Drive is split down the middle of the neighborhood. Well, there are seven other instances of that exact thing occurring in proposed Map A-2.

If there were gerrymandering, that implies someone has inappropriately or illegally drawn the map. Are those claiming or concerned about gerrymandering accusing the third-party consultant of inappropriately or illegally drawing the map? Some have insinuated that

Finally, there is the matter of integrity. Prior to this current situation, have any of those claiming gerrymandering expressed doubt or concerns regarding the integrity of any of our current council members? I am not aware of any. Why is there now, all of a sudden, the questioning of Nomura or Lee’s integrity? I have known both of these men for many years and have followed their actions and activities. I have never had a circumstance where I felt they would compromise their integrity. These are each honest men, and I am proud to have voted for them.

The city of Carpinteria is a physically small community, and it is reasonable to expect that current council members will live not too far from each other. But to assert that there is somehow gerrymandering going on is spurious and disingenuous to the integrity of this districting process – which utilized a third-party consultant – as well as to the integrity of Mayor Nomura and Councilmember Lee.

New bench needed

It’s been two years since the bench at the seal rookery overlook was vandalized and we still don’t have a replacement.

Carpinterians used that bench for years during their walks on the bluffs as a place to pause to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

During the seal pupping season, people gathered there for hours in hopes of

witnessing a birth and to watch the pups playing in the waves with their mothers.

I believe most people would support an effort by City Hall, in cooperation with Chevron, to replace this much missed bench. Chevron has proved to be a good neighbor, and I suspect they are more than willing to help. It really is up to the city, however, to start the ball rolling.

Carpinterians, especially those of us who need a place to rest during our walks, would be very appreciative.

Now, we are disconnected from that important feeling. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this quiet outrage. They could have placed the ugly wall adjacent to all that old, beautiful plant life instead of wiping it off of the face of the earth! That would have been my vote. But hey, we were given no vote, and the removal of all of this beautiful plant life seems to have been done while we were sleeping. What other things are being done in our society while we are sleeping?

Much-needed senior center

A huge thanks to Assistant City Manager Michael Ramirez for his excellent presentation on behalf of a senior center at the last city council meeting. Thank you to the city council for voting to move this project forward. As was so eloquently stated at the meeting about the skate park and a vision of the park being a “hub” for youth activity, I envision the senior center being a hub of activity and resources for our senior community. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Heartbroken over plant removal

BY EVELYN SPENCE Carpinteria City Council’s Monday meeting saw a packed – and tense – council chambers, with both the council and the public split over an issue that will affect Carpinteria elections for the next decade: redistricting.

Public commenters and council members alike argued Monday over how to split neighborhoods, the definition of gerrymandering and how “communities of interest” apply in Carpinteria – discussions which before last month had been relatively routine.

At the end of Monday’s discussion, the council voted 4-1, with Councilmember Roy Lee dissenting, to retract its prior tentative approval of Map A-2.

An early February meeting saw the council and city staff on schedule to approve new district maps, with public support to use the Highway 101 as a firm boundary, and keep the coast, northeast and beach areas together. The council had tentatively settled on Map A-2 on Feb. 28 with a 3-2 split.

But a comment by Vice Mayor Al Clark at that same meeting about the favored map – “it looks like gerrymandering” – sent shockwaves and concern throughout the community, and prompted a tense Monday night meeting.

“In a recent city council meeting, you made a comment that Map A-2 could appear as it was the product of gerrymandering,” public commenter Jason Rodriguez told Clark on Monday.

“For you to do so was totally reckless.

I compare it to the analogy of yelling fire in a crowded place when there’s no such danger (…) Not only are you yelling fire, but you are the one standing there holding matches and a can of gas.”

The maps are built up of census blocks from the 2020 Census and each of the five districts on the map must be relatively the same size, following several criteria detailed by the California Voting Rights Act. The maps were drawn up by a third-party consultant who pulled from the 150+ draft maps submitted to the city from members of the public.

Clark’s main issue lies in the split of several neighborhoods across the city, stating the neighborhoods should remain together when possible.

“There’s no way you can draw any of these maps without splitting some neighborhoods,” Clark said. “But does

that mean we should do it as much as we possibly can?”

But Lee accused Clark of targeting him personally. Clark’s preferred map, a modified Map A-3, puts Mayor Wade Nomura and Lee’s homes in the same district – forcing them to run against one another in upcoming elections – whereas Map A-2 puts Lee and Nomura in different districts. Lee prefers Map A-2.

“I’m hurt and disappointed by all the accusations by people who I look up to and respect. It’s been tough,” Lee told Clark on Monday. “I’m being targeted

by Al (Clark), for whatever reason, to modify or amend the map. I don’t know what you’re doing.”

targeted Lee. “Roy, I’m not targeting you,” Clark said. “I’m trying to get the best map for our community.”

“It doesn’t feel like that to me. Do what you gotta do,” Lee responded.

More than a dozen public commenters spoke at the meeting and nearly a dozen more wrote in letters to the council – all divided on the issue.

Some public commenters, such as Lorraine McIntyre, called the redistricting process “transparent” with definitive public participation, and she said she was confused about why the map process is all of a sudden leading to council division.

“A voting block is a voting block,” McIntyre said. “If the street is split because they’re in two different voting blocks, it’s not (on) any of us that had any control over that.”

Rodriguez, who is a member of the Architectural Review Board, also said he

was “impressed by the level of transparency” from the city and said he attended several meetings on the matter.

“One of the biggest takeaways from attending the meetings has been understanding that this version of A-2 in front of us tonight was not magically plucked out of the air or handcrafted by any one special person of interest,” he told the council.

Others, such as former Mayor Donna Jordan, said there was “very little” public participation. Jordan said she did not initially show up to council meetings or submit a map.

“I think Map A-2… is really indefensible, in violation of the very rules that you set up in order to draw them,” Jordan said, referencing the Starpine Village neighborhood which, on Map A-2, was split.

Commenter Gail Marshall said preserving the seats of the council members is an “obvious pitfall” of Map A-2.

“I looked at (the map) and wondered what had happened to respect communities of interest,” she said.

The council requested, in a separate 4-1 vote with Lee dissenting, that city staff return to the table with both Map A-2 and a modified map, Map A-3, at the next city council meeting on March 28. The council will then vote on the two maps.

Nearly $700k pulled from general fund and its CoastalView.com special reserves for skatepark

The Carpinteria City Council voted 5-0 on Monday to pull $696,000 from the general fund and its special reserves to make up for the funding shortfall for the Carpinteria Skatepark.

Previous city estimates put the shortfall at $500,000.

With the nearly $700,000, the city and the Skatepark Foundation now have enough money to meet the sole construction bid for the skatepark, at $2,089,242.

City staff will now prepare contract documents.

The future of the skatepark looked uncertain last month, after only one bid was submitted for construction, more

than 50% over budget. The council looked at several options, but ultimately decided Monday that option A – accepting the overbudget bid – was the best choice.

Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Director Matt Roberts said he spoke to several construction agencies, who told him several communities around the state are building skateparks right now – hence the expensive bid.

“Several agencies… are building skateparks right now, and that makes things scarce. And when things are scarce, things get expensive,” he said.

said that while the foundation wants the skatepark built, public safety funding is more of a priority.

“If we’re spending money on one thing, we’re not spending it on another,” he said. “We prefer public safety, with streets and bridges, over a skatepark.”

Mayor Wade Nomura said the funding for the skatepark is a priority at the city level. “The tradeoff is an investment of our youth,” he added.

There are currently $1.1 million in the general fund, and $617,000 in the special project reserves, city staff said.

rather than splitting the funding shortfall 50/50 between city funds and Skatepark Foundation funding, citing an urgent need for the park. If the council had opted on a cost-sharing scenario, the foundation would have needed to raise an additional nearly $300,000.

“Our youth have held a lot of skate events and raised a lot of money on their own,” Councilmember Gregg Carty said.

“They want and need a skatepark.”

Once the contract is awarded to the construction company, construction could be completed as early as January 2023, Public Works Director John Ilason told the council.

City honors beloved employee of 36 years

The Carpinteria City Council honored former principal contract city attorney Peter Brown, who retired last June after 36 years of working for the city, at its regular meeting on Monday.

Brown, who received a lengthy standing ovation in the council chambers, was given glowing after glowing commendation from several former mayors, current city councilmembers, community members and fellow former staff.

“Peter, you’ve done more for this community and most people will never know what those things are,” former Mayor Donna Jordan said on Monday. “But I do.

And I sincerely thank you.”

Former mayor and councilmember Brad Stein, who now chairs the city’s Architectural Review Board, echoed Jordan’s comments, saying Brown “brought new light” to the community when the city faced “big change” in 1990. “36 years just boggles my mind, how fast it goes,” Stein said. “You’ve put up with a lot of my dad jokes (…) and I appreciate everything you’ve done.”

Current City Legal Counsel Jena Shoaf Acos told Brown and the council he was

the reason she came to practice law in Santa Barbara, and several others cited him as a mentor.

“I can’t thank you enough for being such a wonderful mentor and friend,” Shoaf Acos emphasized. “You were able to teach all of us so many things without really teaching us – it was watching how you practiced, watching how you read and interpreted the law.”

The council heavily praised Brown for his contributions to the community; Councilmember Gregg Carty called Brown “more like a brother,” while Councilmember Roy Lee joked “maybe you can do a Tom Brady and come back.”

“It’s an honor to work with you,” Mayor Wade Nomura said. “Even with times being tough on occasion… we never really panicked because we knew we were in good hands.”

Brown thanked the room for their resounding support, and praised his wife for “her love, support and counsel” over the years.

“Representing this city has been a highlight of my legal career,” he said.

“Carpinteria is really a special place. It’s really unlike any other community in California.”

Library to start clean with $72k fee wipe

The Carpinteria Library will start fresh in July, wiping the current $72,000 in fees clean, the board of trustees – currently composed of city council members – voted Monday.

New City Librarian Jody Thomas said the fines stretch back as far as 2009, and that the staff’s recommendation is to “start clean.”

“20% of patrons who owe money are children, teens and foster kids,” Thomas said. “(Community members) who are unable to pay their fines are, in fact, those who need the library the most.”

She told the board that there would be no loss of revenue by wiping the fines clean.

The council unanimously supported her recommendation.

“I trust Jody in her recommendation,” Councilmember Roy Lee said. “I do believe we need to start fresh.”

The new Carpinteria municipally owned library will open in July. Thomas said the city has made a conditional offer of employment to a second librarian and provided printed out library cards to council members.

Surfliner developers suspend schedule

The Surfliner Inn developers have notified the Carpinteria City Council that, due to the Initiative on the November ballot, they have suspended the previously set planning and construction schedule.

Per the lease disposition and development agreement (LDDA) signed between the Surfliner Inn developers and the council, the developers would have to adhere to a certain timeline and go through the city’s review process. But the LDDA also had a condition if the Initiative to Save Parking Lot #3 – the initiative to stop the inn from being built – was put on the November ballot, they could suspend project productions until the initiative is voted on.

“The developer has notified the city via letter that they’re taking advantage (of the (LDDA) and have suspended the schedule,” City Manager Dave Durflinger told the council.

Council approves $400k max to fix culvert arson fire damage

The council approved a maximum of $400,000 – with a minimum of $200,000 – to reimburse Caltrans for fixing the arson fire damage in the Via Real culvert.

The fire was set late on Saturday, Feb. 19, in the storm drain system beneath Highway 101 and the 5700 block of Via Real. A 24-year-old Carpinteria resident, Santiago Garcia-Soriano, was arrested on Feb. 23 for setting the fire. Garcia-Soriano was spotted digging into the hillside near the Carpinteria creek and admitted to a fire investigator he had started the fire.

The section of Via Real will be closed for repairs until April.

Senior center appears on agenda for first time

Assistant City Manager Michael Ramirez presented to the council for the first time on a potential senior center for the community.

Ramirez told the council that 27% of the population of Carpinteria is older than 60, and that the median age of Carpinteria residents is significantly higher than the state’s median age.

“From a population standpoint, the data supports a need for senior services both now and in the future,” Ramirez said.

Community members first requested that an item on the senior center be brought to the council during an annual work plan meeting earlier this year, citing Carpinteria’s high population of seniors and the need for programming.

The matter will come back to the council.

Cresco cannabis appeal fizzles at Coastal Commission Carpinteria Valley greenhouse project will not harm Arroyo Paredon Creek, state officials say

The state Coastal Commission made short shrift of an appeal of the Cresco California cannabis project on Foothill Road last week, unanimously finding the project raised “no substantial issue” that would require a fresh review of the company’s zoning permit.

The vote of the 12-member commission via Zoom on Thursday leaves in place the county Board of Supervisors’ Dec. 7 approval of the Cresco project – 7.5 acres of cannabis cultivation in greenhouses and a 25,000 square-foot processing building at 3861 Foothill Road, on property owned by Rene Van Wingerden. It is one of the largest grows in the Carpinteria Valley; Cresco Labs Inc., a publicly traded company based in Chicago, is one of the fastest-growing cannabis companies in the world, with cultivation and retail operations in 10 states.

“We’re not here today to adjudicate the process of cannabis permitting in Santa Barbara County, broadly,” said Santa Barbara Mayor Pro Tempore Meagan Harmon, who was appointed to the commission by Gov. Gavin Newsom last May with support from Concerned Carpinterians, a group that has sought stiffer

regulations for the burgeoning industry.

Thursday marked the first time that a cannabis project in the valley had appeared on the Coastal Commission’s agenda; the project was “appealable” to the state panel because portions of it lie within 100 feet of a natural creek, Arroyo Paredon.

Maureen Foley Claffey, a Foothill Road resident and a member of Concerned Carpinterians, filed the appeal: her family owns an avocado orchard next to Cresco and has been filing complaints to the county about the “skunky” odor of pot from the open-vented greenhouses for more than three years. Claffey argued that smelly cannabis gases and the curtain of mist emitted by the “vapor-phase” pipes encircling the greenhouses, a system designed to “neutralize” the smell of pot, would harm rare plants and fish – including steelhead trout – in Arroyo Paredon, a creek habitat that the county has designated as “environmentally sensitive.”

But the commission staff characterized these claims as “speculative” and lacking in evidence. Steve Hudson, director of the commission’s South Central Coast district, noted that Cresco would “pull further back from the creek” by removing a parking lot and an old avocado

Foothill owned by Graham Farrar. Claffey argued that Farrar should be required to install carbon filters called “scrubbers” inside the greenhouses, not vapor-phase systems around the perimeter, to more effectively get rid of the smell of cannabis.

Two years later, CARP Growers, an industry group representing the owners of 21 greenhouse properties, including Cresco and Farrar, signed an agreement with the Santa Barbara Coalition for Cannabis, a countywide citizens’ group, pledging to install “best available odor control technologies” – now widely believed to be carbon scrubbers.

On Thursday, a representative of Cresco Labs reminded the commission of this pledge and added that the firm would eliminate the use of the vapor-phase system “to the maximum extent feasible.”

The Cresco project, Claffey said, “is a thousand times better than when they first brought it to the table… I’m taking that as a win for everybody.”

“The fact that we are actually doing more repair work through this project is very important to me,” Harmon said.

At the same time, she praised Claffey and other residents who filed dozens of appeals as the valley’s flower greenhouse industry converted to cannabis in recent years, saying that they “have really played an important watchdog function in our county and I think our processes have been all the better off for it.”

In an interview, Claffey said she was disappointed with the Coastal Commission’s vote and what she called the “chronic pass-the-buck-ism at every jurisdictional level,” adding, “it has shown me that when bad policy is allowed to be put into place and there’s a lack of enforcement, the incentive is to do as little as possible to change things.”

“It’s time to go back to the drawing board and craft better policy and create better enforcement actions,” Claffey said.

Transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten enrollment for 2022-2023 began last week. We are planning to expand TK for next year based on classroom space availability, following the Governor

Gavin Newsom’s lead to expand TK programs statewide in the next three years. CUSD will receive grant funding to expand TK for 2022-2023.

At Summerland, the massive north retaining wall is complete and the building slab pour took place last week. Mechanical trades worked rapidly to install piping ahead of the slab pour. Walls have begun to be framed, and will go up once the building slab walls have cured.

The CHS Administration building interior is fully insulated and drywall work is near complete. The Measure U team coordinated with Mr. Cornejo for CHS staff to walk through the new building and view the progress.

Media Coverage

I am responding to the media coverage of parents’ complaints about Aliso Principal Veronica Gallardo’s first year as principal.

The allegation that Veronica “dismissed” a parent complaint against an employee is not accurate. Veronica investigated the complaint following the CUSD procedures for employee complaints and reported her findings to the parent.

There was no evidence that a student was choked by an employee.

The allegation that Veronica does not communicate in Spanish to Spanish-speaking parents is also not accurate.

Veronica spends her day at Aliso working bilingually with students, staff and parents. Additionally, our parent message system, Parent Square, has translations features for Spanish-speaking parents.

The retaliation allegation and police report also have no evidence.

The long-term absence of a classroom teacher and lack of willing substitute teachers were an immense challenge for Aliso and our district that we have now resolved.

I have received Veronica’s resignation letter for March 18. We will recruit an interim principal for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year.

Community shows it’s All in for Carp Kids

Last Thursday, Teresa Alvarez reminded a full auditorium of community, business and public health leaders of the importance of focusing on the family “as a whole.” Alvarez, the executive director of Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP), was speaking at the nonprofit’s first annual All in for Carp Kids breakfast – postponed from its original date of March 12, 2020.

Alvarez noted the organization’s long- and short-term objectives, saying that since 2009, CCP has focused on kindergarten readiness which includes making sure their families are healthy and supported.

“We know children won’t succeed if their families don’t have access to resources when they need them or when they are experiencing trauma in their home,” Alvarez said. “At CCP, families come to bring their children for quality early education, get support for CalFresh and Medical and get mental health services, all in one place.”

CCP’s early learning program teachers are currently engaging in professional development so the organization can become a bilingual center this fall and CCP’s preschools are participating in the Latino Literacy Project. The project, Alvarez explained, will increase awareness of literacy in a culturally sensitive way.

Alvarez also said that with the expansion of universal transitional kindergarten (TK), the organization would be able to turn its attention to serving younger children, expanding CCP’s family services from prenatal to age three. CCP staff has also been trained in a home visitation program to meet with families in their homes or wherever they feel the safest.

Community programs at CCP are also expanding, including a grandparents club and family field trips.

“We have started a postpartum support group and are hoping to start a prenatal support group soon,” Alvarez said. “We also have 12 moms and their adorable babies coming to yoga on our lawn.”

First District Supervisor Das Williams, who is a parent of a CCP alum, also spoke at the event.

“I think you all know that our preschools locally are terribly segregated by race and class, but I believe once the word gets out about Carp Children’s Project we

Beth Cox named 2020 Carpinterian of the Year

When Beth Cox’s father was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, the support she and her family received from friends and neighbors during his swift and terminal illness was a revelation in the capacity of a community to be there for each other.

Cox took that feeling of support and fused it with her creative and generous spirit, soon becoming one of the community’s most active advocates in multiple spheres of need. Last Saturday, at the Carpinteria Community Awards Gala, Cox was named the 2020 Carpinterian of the Year (COY) – the youngest COY to be honored in the award’s 63-year history.

Cox has been instrumental in the success of programs such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, an event she chaired from 2009 to 2015; the 93013 Fund; Rotary’s Carpinteria Calendar; and the lighted “HOPE” and “Carp Heart” that she installs annually on Franklin Trail with the help of her partner in business and life, Grant Cox. Additionally, Cox regularly volunteers for and donates to many area nonprofits, including the Santa Barbara County Trails Council, Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Carpinteria Children’s Project, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, United Boys & Girls Clubs of Carpinteria, Carpinteria Education Foundation, Carpinteria Arts Center and the Alcazar Theatre.

“There are very few organizations in Carpinteria that have not benefited from (Cox’s) generosity of time, money, energy and talent,” Lori Bowles, COY 2019, said when introducing Cox at the gala. “Generosity, a word which should be underlined.”

For Cox, volunteerism is a way of life, especially in Carpinteria. “I think that this community really generates giving because it’s so beautiful and inspirational living here,” she said.

“People have so much positivity and they want to give back. There are so many places in this world to travel to and my dad did that and I did that, and I still get to come home to this – to hiking Franklin Trail, to walking along the bluffs… We want to keep this small town feel and support all the businesses and nonprofits that keep us thriving.”

She added that the awards event, hosted by the South Coast Chamber of Commerce, is akin to the Academy Awards of Carpinteria and she was surprised to be honored at that level among her peers.

“So many people do so much in this community because it feels good to give back, so to be recognized in such a spectacular way is a really good feeling.”

Cox’s unique brand of volunteerism also stands out for its authenticity and creativity. “I’m always thinking outside the box and doing it from my heart,” she said. Because of her “bigger and better” mentality, she added a paddle-out event to Relay for Life which is an event favorite. She was also able to install at the top of the Franklin Trail each year since 2015 an LED sign of “HOPE” for Relay for Life. In 2018, following the Jan. 9 Montecito debris flows, she also installed a heart-shape at the top of the trail, the “Carp Heart,” which was visible from a distance and throughout the night. She did this for no personal gain, only “to help us (the community) heal from the Thomas Fires and Montecito mudslide, and in memorial of victims.”

Three exceptional students were honored at the Community Awards Gala on Saturday. Eduardo Vences was named Jr. Carpinterian of the Year, earning him a $4,000 college scholarship. Sierra Mayoral and Kate Cooney were recognized as Jr. COY finalists, each receiving scholarships of $1,500. The awards program is organized by the South Coast Chamber of Commerce.

Clyde Freeman is 2021 Carpinterian of the Year

A “proud and decorated Vietnam Veteran” who will, “without any hesitation, roll up his sleeves and volunteer,” and has given “untold hours of service to the community” – these are but a few of the praises used to describe the 2021 Carpinterian of the Year, announced Saturday, as honored local Clyde Freeman.

Freeman, a longtime community member who took home the honored title of 2021 Carpinterian of the Year at the South Coast Chamber of Commerce Carpinteria Community Awards Gala, has an extensive volunteer history. He has worked with more than a dozen local organizations and nonprofits that better Carpinteria, including but not limited to the Lions Club, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, the Carpinteria Arts Center and Carpinteria Beautiful. He has even stepped in as a volunteer Christmas Santa.

“Thank you Carpinteria – such an honor and a huge surprise!” Freeman told CVN. “I’ve always thought of myself as a behind the scenes guy.”

Freeman, who has been in Carpinteria since the 1960s, was introduced on the stage by David Powdrell, a former board chair of the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

“In fact, in several of the support levers we received, mention was made that it was a surprise this honor hadn’t already been bestowed on him,” Powdrell told the audience of prominent community members, business owners and civic leaders on Saturday.

Powdrell cited Freeman’s many community accomplishments, stating he has “given and continues to give untold numbers of hours of service to our community and local organizations.” “(His) reliability, commitment and generosity for the benefit of Carpinteria are unmistakable,” Powdrell said.

Powdrell said Freeman was named Montecito Bank & Trust’s (MB&T) Volunteer of the Year more than once, and said in Freeman’s time at the company, “he guided many local non-profits in being recipients of the bank’s annual one-million-dollar fund distribution.”

His wife Diana, who he has been married to for 46 years, said Freeman has been involved on “many levels” throughout the community.

“Clyde believes in civic participation, that by doing so, on any level contributes to a community’s growth and success; he feels blessed to be able to offer his time to help make a difference,” she wrote.

2018 Carpinterian of the Year Curtis Lopez, who also nominated Freeman, called him “one of my heroes” and a “Carpinteria icon.”

“He can’t say no,” Lopez said in the nominee letter, calling him a “lightening rod that keeps Carpinteria in focus with Montecito Bank.”

Dear Amy O, I find Carpinteria’s downtown design very favorable for walking and browsing, but Carpinteria is not pedestrian friendly. Drivers are only partially to blame. This stroller is talking about other strollers, as in wheeled ones with mothers running them full speed ahead.

I’ve avoided collisions thus far. What can I do to continue to keep my strolls accident free?

Dear Walking for Relaxation, I’ve had near-misses with the strollers -vs- stroller action on Linden Avenue, too, not to mention witnessing many a fully loaded SUV with “Baby on Board” bumper sticker bombing down Linden from Canalino School to Carp Avenue.

Funny thing is, I find the sidewalk skateboarders and bicyclists far more aggravating, not to mention dangerous.

But in my book, giving more leeway to someone doing the most important job on earth seems fair and doesn’t require much sacrifice. Not only are moms doing the most important job on earth, but they are also doing the most stressful one. Running is excellent self-care, and excellent self-care is a necessity to carry out ones’ work. Not to mention that running is economical and environmentally friendly.

You, other pedestrians, and moms could be more mindful of your surroundings – a good idea for anybody in any situation. Look both ways before entering and exiting shops or crossing streets. Sometimes groups of pedestrians are four-across blocking the sidewalk, and what are wheeled sidewalk users/ abusers to do?

Like many of us, Angela Childs (Zoe Kravitz) is all too familiar with the inside of her home. She wants to go out. She tries to go out. But she can’t.

However, Angela’s stuck-ness is of a different sort. She can’t go outside, not because of lockdown or any other external imposition, but because she is agoraphobic and extremely anxious about leaving her Seattle apartment. Again and again, she tries to go out – e.g., to meet her friend, Terry (Byron Bowers), at the food truck right by her apartment – but she always chickens out.

Luckily, Angela can make it work, because she works remotely, for a company called “Amygdala” (named for a little part of the brain involved in processing fear, anxiety and other powerful emotions). Amygdala’s biggest product is Kimi, which is a smart speaker (and the namesake of the present movie which is now streaming on HBO Max). Like other smart speakers, Kimi uses advanced algorithms based on user data to help improve its search function.

However, Kimi is a little different from other smart speakers. Instead of being totally AI-based – that is, instead of only using non-human, digital information processing to hone the algorithm – the data Kimi collects is monitored by humans for quality control.

Angela is one of those humans. What she does is listen to failed verbal requests – you know, those times when you talk to your smart speaker and it says something like, “I’m sorry, I don’t know that.”

Then Angela fills out a report in technical jargon so that it doesn’t happen again.

It’s one thing to have a little non-conscious computer thingy listening to you and analyzing your data though and it’s another to have a flesh and blood person privy to your personal life.

But that’s not how Amygdala CEO Bradley Hasling (Derek DelGaudio) looks at it. He thinks it’s great – better, more efficient, higher quality – to have humans in on the call, so to speak. He sells it as better, more ethical customer service.

Alas, as we all know, tech CEOs have no souls. And, alas, Angela can confirm this. One day whilst innocently listening in on myriad frustrated housewives and foul-mouthed youths, she comes across a Kimi recording that, when cleaned up, seems to capture a crime, some kind of violence to the woman on the other end.

Angela is understandably concerned.

Also, it turns out she was the victim of an assault in the past (hence the agoraphobia and anxiety), so she knows its horrors.

Thus, she reports the crime. She tells friends, co-workers, her boss and the FBI. At first Amygdala et al. seem to take

it super seriously. But of course, they don’t truly care about people, unless the “person” is their corporation; and they couldn’t care less about this type of thing, unless the “type of thing” we’re talking about is profitability.

Thus, Guardian Angela is soon running for her life. Of course, she’s not used to running around the city, so she’s got her work cut out for her. Her only hope is to get some help from the minimal support network she has been able to set up and inform of her situation… plus some watchful neighbors.

“Kimi” feels like a classic 90s thriller with a modern twist. It’s full of the fastpaced suspense, action and intrigue that characterizes 90s cinema, and it also takes onboard the era’s fancifully optimistic conviction that all it takes is one virtuous person to thwart the bad guys. It’s a 90s movie, but with smart speakers.

This combination actually makes “Kimi” a bit strange. Our virtuous hero Angela knows what she knows and does what she does because she’s listening in on other people’s lives.

O.K., great, she uncovers a crime this way. But is this supposed to justify the general practice?

I’m all for 90s nostalgia, including the hero fantasy, but I find it weird, and unsettling, that the means of this heroism, and what’s being held up as right and good, involves widespread personal surveillance of the general population at the behest of massive tech companies.

In “Kimi,” that’s not portrayed as the problem. But it sure is, or at least would be, a problem.

So, while I’ll applaud a film with that upbeat mood characteristic of the 90s, it feels like this one should have been more in line with the soul-crushing realism of more recent cinema.

“Kimi” is rated R for violence, language and brief sexuality/nudity.

ARTCETRA Calligraphy class offered at Thario’s

A new weekly calligraphy class opens at Thario’s Kitchen on March 31, led by Mario Rios, Thario’s Kitchen co-owner.

Rios, who said he has a background in martial arts and was “always fascinated

by Bushido,” said he is interested to see participant’s styles develop through calligraphy.

“My style is power, because of warrior spirit,” he said.

The two-hour classes will be held at the restaurant every Thursday for four weeks, beginning March 31, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Students will start with four basic strokes and a Haiku poem.

The class fee is $160, which comes with a brush, felt pad and worksheet.

All Responders must be prequalified in accordance with Public Contract Code 20111.6. The prequalification requirement details are referenced in the RFQ/P. Prequalification packages are due no later than 4:00 PM on March 25, 2022. Proposals not conforming to this requirement will not be accepted.

CLASSIFIED CARPINTERIA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS CONCERNING THE REDISTRICTING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTORAL DISTRICTS Notice is hereby given that the Carpinteria Valley Water District Board of Directors will consider redistricting boundaries of the five by-district divisions established in August 2020 with the adoption of Resolution 1083 as part of the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) process and implementation of a division-based election system beginning with the November 2022 election.

As such, the boundaries of each of the five divisions was established prior to 2020 Census data availability.

Due to the updated Census data, the previously adopted by-district map is no longer applicable and a new redistricting map will need to be considered, approved, and adopted by the Board The District will hold public hearings to receive public input concerning the redistricting map on the following dates: Wednesday, April 6, 2022 Wednesday, April 13, 2022 The meetings will be held at 5:30 pm at the CVWD Board Room, located at 1301 Santa Ynez Ave, Carpinteria CA, 93013 and by teleconference (Zoom Meeting).

Live and recorded broadcasts will be available to watch on the District Website at www.cvwd.net. Covid-19 restrictions may apply to in person meeting attendance.

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon honored the Welty family last week, which recently received the 2021 Small Business of the Year award from the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce.

“John Welty and the Grafs are longtime active Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Carpinteria,” club member Cheryl Wright said. “The Rotarians have enjoyed flower centerpieces from Hilltop for their luncheons and special events.”

The Rotary Club also hosted Joyce Donaldson at a recent meeting; Donaldson, a former CEO of the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce, serves as Carpinteria’s new outreach director at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria celebrates Women’s History Month

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria celebrated Women’s History Month with a promotion of its gardening, STEM and STRONG programs.

Bella Diaz tackled softball during Carpinteria’s STRONG program, which gives girls further access to healthy eating and sports; Genesis Esparza and Savka Molina explored STEM programs, taking a look at building blocks; Aubrey Martinez gave a shoutout to Ruth Bader Ginsburg on International Women’s Day; and Denise Barbere dove into the Girls Inc. gardening program, which teaches Girls Inc. girls how to create and maintain a garden.

“We celebrate our girls and women all year round, but this month in particular, our girls have been celebrating and paying tribute to women of the past,” Girls Inc. of Carpinteria program specialist Alyssa Ornelas said.

Morning Rotary club invites speaker from High School Nation

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria invited Jimmy Cantillon from High School Nation, a national music and arts festival for public schools, to speak at a recent meeting.

Cantillon, along with his brothers, travel and showcase assemblies at public schools to help expose students to the music industry. Cantillon’s mother is Rotarian Shelia Murphy.

“Mr. Cantillon and his brothers started with experience in the music industry and used motivational assemblies to cause students to explore, express and showcase their skills, creativity and talents. “It was an engaging two-hour long morning during which a number of volunteers spent time insuring this would be a rewarding experience for the young children. In the end, it was the volunteers who were rewarded,” Mailheau said.

The Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) is the only organization authorized by the federal government in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties to respond to live and dead seals and sea lions, and when appropriate, rescue and rehabilitate them.

Live and dead sea turtles and live stranded whales are also within the CIMWI’s purview. Often apparently stranded seals are simply resting, and the best course is to place signs advising people to stay away. In other situations, CIMWI’s veterinarian may determine it is appropriate to rescue and rehabilitate injured or distressed animals.

Crane Country Day School students spent an educational morning at the overlook learning about the harbor seals and local wildlife. A number of visitors and trail users also enjoyed the presentations on our environment and the importance of wildlife protections.

Disturbances

A group of tourists wandered into the middle of the “nursery” area, causing a stampede of about 40 seals – mostly moms and pups. An oil industry boat and a solitary beach walker caused two additional disturbances. CVN takes the train to San Juan Capistrano

Darlah Goodfield, along with her grandparents Llew and Marilyn Goodfield, hopped on a train with a copy of CVN last Sunday, taking the newspaper from Carpinteria to San Juan Capistrano.

Goodfield got to check out surfers, seals and a “beautiful view out to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands,” the family said. “(Darlah) tucked the Coastal View in her bag so she could show it off at our destination.”

The family also saw strawberry and wildflower fields, before checking out the restaurants and shops at San Juan Capistrano. “(We were) happy for the respite but as we always say, ‘It is good to come back to our home Carpinteria,’” the family said.

The Warriors boys volleyball squad has played a solid season in the first few weeks and continued that success with another busy week of games, starting with a four-set Citrus Coast League victory over Malibu followed by a competitive run into the championship round of a 30-team tournament over the weekend.

Carpinteria started off the week with their first league victory of the year, overcoming some mistakes to beat Malibu in four sets. The Warriors missed 15 serves and gave up five aces in the match, and after two sets the teams were tied up; Carpinteria won the first set 25-19 and dropped the second set 24-26.

Both teams battled in the third, but the Warriors held on to take the set 27-25. Defense kept the Warriors in the match throughout the day, with the team picking up a combined 124 digs, with libero Sebastian McCurry getting 37 digs on his own. Carpinteria won the final set 25-21, to lock in their first Citrus Coast League win of the year.

The boys got an early start on Saturday, kicking off their long day at the 45th Dos Pueblos Invitational Boys Volleyball Tournament at 8 a.m. against the Santa Ynez Pirates. The Warriors shook off the early morning rust to sweep Santa Ynez in both sets of their first match.

Throughout the day, the Warriors would test their skills against a pool of 30 teams ranking from the top-tier Division 1 down to Division 5. Carpinteria was impressive through the first round of group play, taking five out of eight total sets and earning a spot in the championship round by coming in second place in their group.

“We were excited that we were playing so well against Division 1, 2, 3, and 4 teams,” Carpinteria head coach Mickey Caughey said. “Now we know we are a legitimate team.”

In the championship round of 16 teams – and after playing four games earlier in the day – the Warriors drew an evening matchup with powerhouse Palisades Charter. The championship rounds were decided on one set, with the Warriors coming short and ending their tournament run early.

“Palisades Charter proved to be one big fish that was just too big to swallow,” Caughey said, “but what a wild ride it was while it lasted.”

Once again, McCurry played a significant role on defense, collecting 70 digs throughout the day.

Warriors also had a solid day all around, with Diesel Slade dropping 22 kills and grabbing 57 digs on the day. Joaquin Gonzalez had 18 kills of his own, while Zach Isaac had 14 kills to go with his 52 digs.

The Warriors have had a busy run since starting the season at the end of February, averaging at least three games a week along with tournament play.

“We have been playing three times a week since the beginning of the season and we have been making steady improvement with each match,” Caughey said. He also said that he has found the old saying, “the game teaches the game,” to be true with this year’s group. All the in-game experience has the team in mid-season form just a few weeks after starting.

Carpinteria will play three more games this week, finishing at home against Hueneme on Thursday, before playing in the Bishop Diego Classic Tournament over the weekend. After the tournament, the Warriors will take a muchdeserved week off for spring break.

Carpinteria baseball game ends in tie due to darkness

The Warriors headed to the Ojai Valley to take on the Nordhoff Rangers last week, and neither team was able to pull out ahead before the game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Pitcher Joaquin Ramirez stayed strong through the entire game for the Warriors, holding Nordhoff to just two runs before the game was called with a final score of 2-2. Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said that Ramirez “pulled a Houdini” in the bottom of the eighth inning, working his way out of a bases loaded jam by forcing the final two outs with a pop up and line out to end the game.

Cooney also said the Warriors struggled to find a spark on offense.

“Our group was not offensive today and we had a difficult time managing the many uncontrollable factors that a high school baseball game can contain at times,” he said.

“Ramirez continues to improve each time out and he really gave us the opportunity to stay in the game. He and catcher Diego Nieves are really working well together.”

After falling behind 0-2 heading into the sixth inning, the Warriors finally put points on the board off an RBI single from Isaac Flores. The tying run came across an inning later when Matt Muñoz “slid home in a cloud of dust” after a wild pitch scooted away from the Ranger catcher, according to Cooney.

On Friday afternoon, the Warriors hosted the top team in the Citrus Coast League, Santa Paula. The Cardinals starting pitcher Bryce Zavala held Carpinteria to two hits and two runs, while striking out eight and walking one batter.

Carpinteria’s Zach Mata started the game strong with a first inning shut out, but Santa Paula caught fire, scoring all eight runs over the next three frames. The Warriors managed to score two in the sixth inning but were unable find any more offense and lost with a final score of 8-2.

“While we would prefer a different result, this was a good baseball game,” Cooney said. “Santa Paula has a steady program with some really good players and our guys showed real mettle in competing.”

Carpinteria plays a home-and-away series with Malibu, finishing with on the road against the Sharks on Friday.

Warriors boys tennis drops two, gets big league win

After starting out hot, Carpinteria’s boys tennis team hit a few roadblocks last week, losing back-to-back games against Laguna Blanca and Nordhoff before picking back up with a Citrus Coast League win over Malibu.

Against Laguna Blanca, the Warriors held strong in the early rounds, but once they headed into doubles the deficit was too much to overcome and Carpinteria lost 8-10.

The Warriors headed to Ojai for their league opener against Nordhoff, but an early injury set Carpinteria up for a hard match.

“I knew the day was going to be rough,” Coach Charles Bryant said, “when one of our starting doubles players badly rolled his ankle in the warmups.

Carpinteria dominated in singles play, winning eight out of nine sets, but Nordhoff swept the Warriors in every doubles set.

“We will have to make adjustments the next time we play them and will probably move our top singles players into the doubles lineup just to counter that strategy,” Bryant said.

In their third match of the week, the Warriors redeemed themselves with a big Citrus Coast League win over Malibu, 15-3. “We were much improved all across the board today which was exciting to see,” Bryant said.

The doubles duo of Ian Thomas and Zaiden Juarez went 3-0, including a big tiebreak win over Malibu’s top doubles team.

Carpinteria is now 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Citrus Coast League

Warriors track and field falls to Foothill Tech

Carpinteria had a tough time against Foothill Tech, with both the boys and girls losing in the dual track and field meet.

Foothill Tech outscored the boys 78-45, and the girls 72-53. Carpinteria is now 0-2 in both boys and girls dual meet action.

Ainslee Alexander continued to be a bright sport for the Warriors, winning three events, including matching her personal record of nine feet in the pole vault. She also had a season best of 15’7.75’’ in the long jump and won the shot put with a distance of 26’8’’. Her sister, freshman Averi Alexander, followed up with her own win in the triple jump with a personal best 31’4.25’’.

For the boys, Mateo Handall won both the 200 and 400 meters. In the 200 he ran a personal best of 23.77s, and in the 400 a personal best of 52.34s.

Coach Van Latham hopes that the team will be able to fill some holes for dualmeet events where there were no competitors for Carpinteria, and said that some athletes have been dealing with injuries, which has forced some younger competitors to step up.

“It needs to come together soon however,” Latham said, “as the league opener with Fillmore is next week.”

Carpinteria’s swim team repeats success against Hueneme

After a dominating performance at the Raider Relays last week, the Warriors returned to Hueneme for a dual meet against the Vikings, and proved their speed in the pool was no fluke as both the boys and girls secured the win.

The boys had two sophomore swimmers also take two individual wins each, with Jackson Melton and water polo standout Asher Smith taking their events. The boys won with an overall score of 115-15.

Piccoletti, Erin Otsuki and Lilli Nemetz each earned CIF consideration times for the girls, while Melton and Augie Sheaffer also earned CIF times. Both the girls and boys relay teams showed strong performances in the win.

“The team had many personal best times,” said Coach Jon Otsuki. “From top to bottom the team continues to get stronger and faster.”

The Warriors host Santa Paula this week for another dual meet.

The Carpinteria Aquatics Club recently raised $15,000 for scholarships and equipment in a swim-a-thon.

Carpinteria Aquatics Club raises $15k at swim-a-thon

The Carpinteria Aquatics Club raised over $15,000 at its recent swim-a-thon to go towards scholarships and new equipment.

During the swim-a-thon, members swam 117,500 yards or 67 miles. Top swimmers included Erin Otsuki, who swam 8,000 yards; Moses Schlobohm with 7,200 yards; and Junius Fedders, at 2,300 yards.

The club’s exceeded its original goal of $10,000.

“Our hats are off to head coach Leilanie Silva, swim coach Armando Ramos, swim coach Sharon Otsuki, water polo coach Andrew Fedders, and an extra special shout out to swim coach Lexi Persoon who took the lead on this project,” the city of Carpinteria stated in its newsletter.
