Rental assistance available

Carpinteria residents who have been financially impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic may be eligible for rent assistance. The Emergency Rental Assistance Program managed by the county of Santa Barbara will provide up to three months of rent payments for tenants who cannot pay rent because of lost or reduced income due to Covid-19. Funded through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the program includes $741,038 allocated to Santa Barbara County. Additionally, the city of Carpinteria has applied its $49,205 allocation toward the program.

Funds will be distributed to qualifying tenants on a first-come first served basis.

To start the application process, call the County’s Help Line at 2-1-1.

Carpinteria business owners that weren’t eligible in round one of the city’s Restart Grant program may now be able to apply for the $1,000 stimulus money.

Taking funds from the city’s Economic Uncertainty Reserve, Carpinteria established a fund of $100,000 for small businesses. After the initial grant period closed on June 9, the city provided 69 local businesses with $1,000 checks, leaving a balance in available relief money of $31,000.

The reopening grants were intended to help businesses with expenses related to Santa Barbara Public Health orders for safe distancing and sanitization (purchasing/installing plexiglass, hiring additional employees to manage queues, providing face masks, etc.). To be eligible, businesses were required to complete a county reopening certification process.

With the remaining funds, the City Council Recovery Committee, including Councilmembers Gregg Carty and Roy Lee, have recommended a second round of funding be opened in order to allow for businesses and organizations to apply that at the time of the first round were not allowed to reopen under the County Health Order, including personal service businesses such as nail salons and spa services and concert and performing arts venues, banquet halls and children’s playgrounds.

The council moved to establish new guidelines for a second round of restart grants that would allow businesses to apply that were not previously eligible.

Shuttered business like The Alcazar Theatre and Valley Barbers on Carpinteria Avenue may qualify for reopening grants under new guidelines for the second round.

Racial Equality and Social Justice Committee

City Council has moved to create a blue ribbon committee to examine city policies and collaborate with law enforcement in actions related to racial equity and social justice. The resolution adopted on June 8, which initiated the process, was drafted in response to “the recent unjustified killing of George Floyd (as well as countless others) and the subsequent protests across the nation and to condemn the unjustified use of force and brutality against Black people, people of color and all marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+ individuals by law enforcement and to stand in solidarity with protestors of systemic racism in our country,” as stated in the staff report.

The city chose a blue ribbon committee model—also called a “working group—because it allows for members of the public to serve on the committee alongside councilmembers. Other blue ribbon committees in the city’s history have included the 1990 committee which disbanded the Carpinteria Police Department and contracted with Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement, and more recently, the current Library Committee that is evaluating library governance options.

Blue ribbon committees are subject to the Brown Act, meaning all correspondence and activities are part of the immediate public record.

Once formed, the Racial Equality and Social Justice Committee will collaborate with law enforcement to further community-oriented policing, build trust with the community and ensure the safety of community members. Additionally, the committee will review and revise city policies to incorporate antiracist policies and ensure the equitable distribution of resources and public services. The committee will also work with com-

munity groups and leaders to support minority-owned businesses, community groups and non-profit organizations.

Candidacy application period opens for City Council

Carpinterians seeking a seat on the City Council in the November election must file paperwork between July 13 and Aug. 7. The seats currently held by Mayor Wade Nomura and Councilmember Fred Shaw will be up for election for full four-year terms. If one or both of the incumbents does not file, the deadline to file paperwork will be extended to Aug. 12. For more information, visit carpinteria.ca.us.

2021 Pavement Rehabilitation Project

At its July 13 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council approved an agreement for design services for the 2021 Pavement Rehabilitation Project. The capital project planned for next spring will rehabilitate the pavement on 3rd Street (from Linden Avenue to Ash Avenue), 4th Street (from Holly Avenue to the end of the street), 8th Street (from Palm Avenue to Linden Avenue), Calle Ocho (from its north to south ends), Elm Lane (from Sawyer Avenue to Carpinteria

Avenue), and Holly Avenue (from 5th Street to 7th Street).

The general scope of work will include pavement rehabilitation, pedestrian facility upgrades (such as, curb ramps and sidewalks) as needed for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and drainage improvements. The full project is expected to cost $3.2 million and will be funded through Measure X and Senate Bill 1 Road Maintenance & Rehabilitation Account.

Commercial eviction ban extended

The city’s Commercial Eviction Protections will remain in place until at least Sept. 30 due to an order by California Governor Gavin Newsom that extends local government’s ability to halt evictions. The Carpinteria City Council unanimously voted on April 13 to adopt a temporary moratorium on commercial evictions for tenants who have suffered income loss from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ordinance requires tenants to pay the full amount of unpaid rent within 180 days of the moratorium’s end without late fees or interest. Commercial tenants and their landlords may still negotiate alternative payment arrangements.

Residential renters continue to be protected from eviction. Renters who are financially impacted by the pandemic may postpone paying rent until 90 days after the State’s Declaration of Emergency ends.

John Hugh Sherfey, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully at home on July 5. He was 81.

John loved gardening, sports and was a talented artist. He had a goofy sense of humor and earned the title “My Funny Valentine” because he and Joan were married on Valentine’s Day 55 years ago.

He is survived by his wife Joan, his brother Charles Sherfey, daughters Kelly (Matt) Damron (granddaughters Madison, Lily, Alexandra) Kathleen Sherfey, and Cortney (Andrew) Rasura (granddaughters Sophie and Annelise).

The family wants to thank Ojai Hospital, ER doctors and Assisted Hospice.

When did I get this old?

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER Just a short time ago I finished my teaching credential at UCSB, got a job, rented a house on the beach in Carpinteria, had fun, got married, produced three sons over 11 years, retired, adored three grandsons and never felt “old.”

Then the dreaded coronavirus attacked and spread and forced us to stay home, wear masks and wash our hands constantly. At first, I thought the virus and the fear would pass relatively quickly, and life would go on. Goes to show I’m not always correct.

It didn’t take long for my oldest son to call and “lay down the law.” I was declared too old to be going into a grocery store or socializing with my friends or traveling just about anywhere. Not only did my son think I was old, so did the governor of California, the news anchors reporting daily on TV, and Dr. Fauci.

Each and every day I would turn on the news, only to be told over and over that I’m in the “old” category. I don’t know how I missed such a turning point. I never felt old before—a little achy perhaps but certainly not old.

To make matters even worse, I have a dear friend who was recently diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. I have known this woman for over 50 years.

We were at UCSB together, traveled to Europe together, became teachers at about the same time, and eventually retired—always keeping our friendship nourished and alive. This hideous disease makes Covid-19 look like a piece of cake. To be a bit dramatic, the disease eats holes in your brain at a fairly fast rate. Once diagnosed, a person with the disease will suffer severe dementia and die within six to 12 months.

When my friend first told me all this, I couldn’t process all she had to face. Not only is she dying, she is also losing her memory and her ability to make good decisions. She has only weeks to make sure her affairs are in order, to inform her sons of all that needs to be taken care of, and to figure out how to say goodbye to her three grandchildren. And to make matters worse, the whole pandemic issue is making everything harder and more complicated.

Just last October, she and I and other friends from college spent a fun weekend together in Morro Bay. When we were younger, we would hike or swim

or go boating, but this time we mostly sipped wine, bragged and gossiped.

My friend is tall and thin and makes me jealous because she’s very photogenic.

More importantly she is known for her loyalty, her pride in her sons, her love of all animals and her willingness to get things done. Over the years, her life has been woven into mine, and even though months may go by without chatting, when we do connect the conversation is easy and comfortable—at least it was until she told me about her horrid disease.

She seems to be handling her struggles with grace and strength. Me: not so well.

I have been to see my friend several times over the last month. The first visit was normal and weird at the same time, if that’s possible. Her balance was off, and she was no longer allowed to drive.

She had lost weight and ate very little, but we talked and talked. My job was to help her write her obituary. At first, she could give me information and answer questions but as the afternoon got later, her ability to remember things seemed to fade.

It took me several weeks to make a return visit, and I was distraught at how much she had changed. She now used a walker and was very “drifty.” Her memory was waning, but she seemed to enjoy my rambling as I reminded her of our trip to Europe as 20-year olds using the five-dollar-a-day method and our later trip to China after we retired from teaching.

Each time I return from one of these visits, it is clear to me that my friend will not be here long.

How did I get to this stage of having to lose people? How am I supposed to handle this? Of course, I’ve lost parents and older relatives before which was painful but expected. Now I am being constantly reminded that I’m old and life is short, and loss hurts no matter how hard I try to protect myself. I’m confident a vaccine will eventually be created by the experts to save us from Covid-19. I’m just not so sure they’ll be able to save me from still being in the “old” category.

Now retired, she enjoys pottery, writing, books and travel.

History Museum to remain closed

Recent sharp increases in Covid cases statewide led Governor Newsom to halt Stage Three reopening of businesses and cultural attractions. As a result, the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History will remain closed until further notice and the historical society’s board of trustees voted to suspend all museum programs and events through the end of the year. This suspension includes the monthly Museum Marketplace as well as the annual Holiday Faire in November.

The museum still accepts new memberships and donations are greatly appreciated to help offset the loss of revenue the pandemic has caused. While the museum will remain closed, its website is regularly updated at carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org, where readers can access historical articles from past issues of the historical society’s newsletter, “The Grapevine,” with new articles added each week.

“We at the historical society and museum miss our volunteers and visitors,” wrote Director/Curator David W. Griggs, “(we) look forward to seeing you all as soon as it is safe to do so!”

Cannabis and youth

There is more I need to understand about the cannabis industry, but there is one fundamental idea that we disagree on: that “county residents will resolve the differences brought about by this and grow as a community.” Local industry leaders should not wait for this to happen, but be more proactive in making it happen. You can’t expect people to naturally get where you want them to be; you need to be our guide.

We need to know more about your data-driven methods, innovations and bright young people you’re working alongside. We need more outreach in the form of education, not just pictures of giant checks.

When Carpinterians saw school district leaders smiling in a grow house, it was a poor introduction to the cannabis industry. The message conveyed was that it’s acceptable for kids to partake in recreational cannabis use. Numerous times, 14-year-olds in my classroom have said, “See, my principals and superintendent think it’s cool I smoke pot. The growers even put a drug and alcohol counselor in place in case I overdo it.” This, in part, should be resolved by you. Younger generations need to understand your business and what it is all about—the difference between recreational and medicinal use, and how the development of their own brain factors into all of it.

Cannabis growers have said the local discussion on cannabis never seems to end, but does it need to? If we are going to understand this new agricultural opportunity, the conversation is far from over. Just like education, we need to evolve with what our community and students need. Seize this teachable moment, don’t just extend an open invitation for a grow house tour. CARP Growers, local business and education leaders need to come together and determine how to move forward in a way that benefits everyone.

Grand Jury slammed supervisors over cannabis

Our annually convened citizen Grand Jury recently released a cannabis report that exposed the dark underbelly of how the county of Santa Barbara conducts business. Rhetorical burning

There are two “Black Lives Matter”: One is the group of honest passionate citizens expressing their sincere concerns; (the other) is “Black Lives Matter” the organization. New York’s BLM leader Hawk Newsome is a self-proclaimed “trained Marxist.” He has clearly stated their goal, “I said if this country doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down the system and replace it.” Those are his words, not mine.

Unlike other countries, here people have the right to take to the streets to have their voices heard. As a matter of fact, our constitution guarantees it.

However, when you cross that line— when you hurt people, destroy, vandalize, loot, smash, grab, steal and take your neighbor’s property and burn it to the ground—you have become a common criminal.

How many businesses do we have in Carpinteria? In large cities, neighborhoods are like small towns. Everyone knows each other, you eat at the neighborhood restaurants, you know the owners, just like our town. And did you know that more than 350 small businesses were destroyed in Minneapolis alone?

Small businesses are family businesses.

Forty-one percent of those businesses were minority owned. Now they have nothing. And all the local people, young and old, they employed have no jobs and no future.

The owners and their employees still have kids to put through school, rent to pay, food to buy… but now they have no income, some now have no home. And

they did nothing wrong, they just went to work. It is always easy to be casual with our words when they devastate someone we do not know. I heard local residents here affirm that “burning it down” is OK. I say to that, it is not OK. It never has been OK. It never will be OK.

SCHOOL NOTES Canalino issues draft school reopening plans

In a letter to families, Canalino Elementary School Principal Jaime Persoon announced draft reopening plans for the coming school year set to begin for students on Aug. 24. Citing the need to work within guidelines established by Santa Barbara County Public Health, Persoon wrote, “not much is ‘business as usual’ while we all contend with the Covid-19 pandemic.” She then explained that a full time, five-day-a-week school schedule will be impossible to achieve because of social-distancing requirements.

“Nothing would make me happier than to return to business as usual for our students, staff and families,” Persoon stated. “There is no model that will satisfy all of us, as everyone has different circumstances, from child care to missing work to protecting vulnerable members of the family in the home.”

The proposed schedule for first through fifth grade involves two cohorts of students meeting on campus for two consecutive days each, on Monday and Tuesday, and Thursday and Friday, respectively, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with Wednesdays for online learning.

Custodial staff will disinfect classrooms each Wednesday between cohort attendance days.

Children in TK and kindergarten will attend school four days a week—Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday— also in cohorts that will meet from 8 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. respectively, with an hour in between cohorts for custodial staff to clean the six TK, kindergarten, and K-1 Family

School classrooms between groups.

As with the rest of the school, TK and kindergarten students will have online learning scheduled for Wednesdays.

The scheduling arrangement reflects the continuing risks from Covid-19, and was informed by public health guidelines and two parent and staff surveys sent out by the school. “I don’t know a single educator who prefers remote learning to in-person learning,” Persoon wrote. “We did not get into this profession to stare at a screen all day.”

Persoon also provided answers to a variety of questions regarding health protocols if a child or staff member gets sick, and details about lunch and recess periods. Children will “not be allowed to play on the play structure, swings, bars, etc. per public health requirements,” the principal stated. “We are working as a team to design activities for kids at recess that are developmentally appropriate by age and also not involving shared equipment.”

In another email sent to parents on Monday, July 13, Persoon requested supplies to help with expanded outdoor education. Materials such as shade tents, personal whiteboards with markers and erasers, whiteboard easels, sun hats and mats for students to sit on while outside on the grass.

Rate of Covid-19 infections continues to rise

Santa Barbara County reported 184 new cases of Covid-19 on July 14, bringing the total confirmed case count to 4,323, with 31 deaths and 3,921 individuals fully recovered.

The South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria had two new cases on July 14, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 79.

Santa Maria had a spike on July 14 with 113 new cases confirmed. Lompoc’s federal prison, which reached 998 cases overall, is now reporting 0 daily cases.

County Health Officer closes all indoor business

In response to the State Public Health Officer Order issued on July 13, the Santa Barbara County Health Officer has issued an order mandating the closure of additional indoor business operations, effective July 14 at 5 p.m. and continuing through Aug. 12. According to the new order, gyms and fitness centers, places of worship, protests, offices of non-essential critical infrastructure, personal care services, hair salons and malls, all must close indoor operations. Outdoor operations may continue, if outdoor operations are allowed by the licensing or permitting authority. Outdoor operations may be conducted in a tent, canopy or other sun shelter as long as the sides are not closed.

Additionally, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums and family entertainment centers must close indoor operations statewide. These types of businesses were already required to close indoor operations in Santa Barbara County.

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER Sea level rise. A series of words that has a different impact depending on where you are located in the world, but as someone who lives near the ocean and takes advantage of the proximity, it is something I pay attention to. Spending a lot of time at the beach makes you notice everything from the small differences in the amount of shell and rock material that has washed up each day to the highest high tides. King tides, the dramatic high tides we experience each year in the winter, have been used as an indicator for what sea level rise will look like all over the world. In Carpinteria, they are noticeable by the lake-like quality of the salt marsh, and the crashing waves along the breakwater if you head to the beach just west of Ash Avenue.

The coastline of Carpinteria has changed over the years. Prior to the built environment, the beaches of what is now the central and south coast of California was a chain of ever-changing cliffs, migrating sand dunes and coastal wetlands that dissipated energy from waves and protected inland areas.

Carpinteria is unique in that some of the historic environment has survived human settlement in the form of the sand dunes fronting the Carpinteria State Beach Park, the bluffs that make up the coastline in the eastern portion of the city, and the coastal wetland of Carpinteria Salt Marsh. These together have protected the area from high tides over the years, but as sea levels rise the low-lying areas are vulnerable to flooding while the cliff faces are subject to increased erosion at their base.

Contrary to what many people think, all oceans on the planet are not rising at the same rate. And like climate change, there is no debate among scientists that the seas are rising. It will not happen overnight, or even over a month or year.

Average sea level rise around the globe has been approximately 1.9 millimeters a year over the last hundred years. Again, this does not mean each year here along the California coast we have seen that increase, it is an average from all over the planet. What we do know is that the seas are forever changing, and historical data shows that they are slowly rising. This means that communities like ours should be mindful of the resources we have that protect our community. Which brings me back to dunes, coastal estuaries and bluffs.

If you visit the Carpinteria Salt Marsh as the tide is coming in, you can see on a small scale how an estuary calms the ocean. As the ocean rushes into the marsh, plants and water flowing from the creek dissipate energy, slowing the flow so that the ocean doesn’t flow upstream. Over the course of hundreds of years, countries all over the world have

settled in coastal regions and tried to tame the sea with modern engineering.

One thing we have learned through trial and error is the best way to protect anything is to first look to nature to see how it is done.

In an effort to do just that, the city has been working on a Dune and Shoreline Management Plan, which includes the beginning stages of planning for a living shoreline to protect the lowest lying area of Carpinteria along City Beach. In a sense, we are looking at the past to protect the future of our coastline.

but it could increase in the coming years and protecting our coastal dunes and estuaries is an important step to keeping our coastal towns safe now and in the future.

A pot shop on Santa Claus Lane?

County seeks neighborhood input

BY DEBRA HERRICK Cannabis dispensaries might be popping up soon in Summerland and Santa Claus Lane, according to Barney Melekian, Santa Barbara County’s assistant CEO who is overseeing applications for retail licensing in the county’s unincorporated communities. The county has seven Community Plan Areas where cannabis retail can be located, and it can permit a maximum of one cannabis retail storefront in each. Toro Canyon (which includes Padaro/Santa Claus Lane) and Summerland are distinct CPAs, and dispensaries are allowed in both communities.

“This process is going to be thorough and exhaustive and will address community concerns,” said Melekian at a virtual community meeting on July 8 for Toro Canyon and Summerland CPA residents in which county staff provided an overview of the application, licensing and permitting process.

In determining eligible storefronts for cannabis retail, applicants must keep a 750-foot buffer from sensitive receptors—schools, daycares and youth facilities. In Summerland, that leaves just over a dozen possible storefronts off the main thoroughfare’s north and south ends. In the Toro Canyon CPA, the zone stretches across Santa Claus Lane where existing shops include Rincon Events, Padaro Beach Grill, Porch and Surf Happens Surf School.

The application process will have four phases and a weighted ranking system. After an initial review, in the second phase, applications will be scored by members of the county’s agricultural commission, environmental health services, fire and Sheriff’s offices and a third-party consultant. Neighborhood compatibility will weigh in at 90 percent in the third phase. Applicants with the highest score will then be able to apply for a land use permit and a cannabis retail business license. Cannabis business licenses are given for one-year terms and are nontransferable.

If a cannabis retail license and land use permit is issued, and a dispensary opens in one of the CPAs, storefronts will have county-enforced regulations, including security personnel and a 24-hour video monitoring system. Additionally, all owners, managers

and supervisors will be required to take criminal background checks and live scan background checks that disclose no felonies.

First District Supervisor Das Williams advised his constituents to consider what was the community benefit that they’d want to see from a cannabis retail store and to adamantly voice that need.

“There are particular benefits that Summerland is in need of and I encourage folks, regardless of their feelings about marijuana and other issues, to decide what is the community benefit bar,” said Williams. “I would even encourage those who are diametrically opposed to marijuana that if you were smart, you’d set the bar really high or too high to reach. Because our criteria and our system are focused on what is the value that a community puts on a particular benefit that they can see from the advent of retail cannabis in their community.”

“There’s no written formula to community compatibility,” said Melekian when asked how it would be determined in scoring applications. “In a way, at meetings like this, we’re establishing that now.” Melekian mentioned taking into account parking, neighborhood concerns and traffic flow as well as the expertise of the planners that work in community development.

Several community members questioned whether Santa Claus Lane could be compatible since it is a popular beach destination for families and youth surf schools. “If cannabis stores are being treated differently than others in terms of requiring this restriction (750-feet) from children,” said Steven Nancy, the property owner for Rincon Events and Padaro Beach Grill storefronts, “then the fact that on Santa Claus Lane… there are more kids just hanging out pretty much any day during the summer months as you’d find at any school in the county (should matter).”

The current maps indicating buffer zones are informational, explained county analyst Kathryn Lehr, who noted that a surf school operating on the beach might not meet the requirements of a sensitive receptor but that the area would be studied closer and the maps might need to be updated.

Since the ordinance states that there may be up to one retail cannabis store per CPA, Carpinteria resident Mark Brickley asked, “Is zero an option?”

Melekian responded that the ordinance is open to interpretation. “One is a maximum and zero is an option. But it will be based on the quality of the applications and the community’s input; and ultimately, it’s the Board’s decision.”

Arts Center elects new Board of Directors delighted to be able to be active volunteers in the community.

Tim Cohen has a 30year management background in engineering design and environmental services industry. In addition, he served on the board of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria for 12 years and volunteered to help lead the design and construction of their current facility on Foothill Road. He also has a long-standing relationship with UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, where he serves on the Dean’s Council and as chair of the Corporate and Foundation Partners Program.

He and his wife moved to Carpinteria from New York for retirement and are

communication studies at UCSB and received a teaching degree from UC Irvine. She was a teacher with Santa Barbara Unified School District for 30 years. In addition to being a gallery host and helping with events at CAC, Kathy also assists with the events for the Carpinteria Friends of the Library.

Owner and broker of Murphy King Real Estate since 1982, Debbie Murphy has a wealth of volunteer experience ranging from the Carpinteria Sanitary District to serving on the boards of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning, the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce and the California Avocado Festival.

Bringing diverse art experience to the board, Nini Seaman started her stud-

ies in Montevideo, Uruguay in South America, and ended with a master’s degree from Tufts University and the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts.

Her volunteer experience ranges from helping local schools and homeowners’ associations to serving on the boards of Laguna Blanca School, CALM and Girls Inc. After living in New Jersey for 35 years, Robert Stokes moved to Carpinteria in 2018 and jumped right into volunteering. In addition to joining the Carpinteria Lions Club and Carpinteria Beautiful, he volunteers with the Carpinteria Hosts and serves as a gallery host at CAC. He has experience as an IT project management consultant and systems development manager along with serving on the board of the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey.

Blazing trails during the pandemic

Ever since phase two of the Franklin Trail was completed in May of 2015, the 5.2 mile excursion has become a playground for locals. From hikers to runners to cyclists to horseback riders to mules, throngs of folks have utilized the path that begins adjacent to the parking lot of Carpinteria High School’s administrative offices. “I’ve been hiking it since it opened three times a week,” said Candi Burquez who lives nearby.

Even with all its natural beauty, the Franklin Trail is still not without potential hazards. “There’s rattlesnakes out there, we always warn each other of that.

There’s bear prints,” said Burquez who often hikes the venue accompanied by friends. Controlling and removing graffiti has also become an issue, as well as making sure that those along the trail, stay within the boundaries to preserve the

region’s habitat.

In December 2016, Steve and Janet Augerot decided these issues needed to be monitored, so, they formed the group Franklin Trail Blazers. “We (Janet and seven to eight friends) were going up (the trail) every morning, and we kind of gave a weather and safety report,” said Steve who posted them online daily. Suddenly, interest in the trail began to blossom, along with requests to become a part of the Trail Blazers.

As more and more joined in, the ascending climb helped transform the hike from a leisurely stroll into a means of competition. “We used to have oncea-year challenges, 30-60-90 day challenges, see how many times a year you could do it,” explained Augerot. The couple’s personal entourage had grown up to 15 women, who began to record

the time it took trekking the trail. Steve would help encourage others to hustle up the hill as a means of exercise, and as a result, he started being referred to as “Coach.” “I personally lost 30 pounds going on the trail, that’s why I started doing it,” said Augerot. The Trail Blazers also threw parties at the end of the year, giving out prizes to those with the highest marks.

But the Blazers have run into another challenge due to the Covid-19 crisis. “I was hiking up the trail on Wednesday (July 8), and I noticed on some of the tight switchbacks that people were not wearing masks,” said Burquez. In hopes of not shaming or calling out those without a face covering, she came up with a contest where people could send photos of themselves wearing masks. Burquez put up $200 and received an anonymous

$50 contribution to give out as prizes for trail goers who donned masks. “There’s so much negativity on the internet right now, social media, so, I was trying to reward the people who are wearing masks,” she said.

Two days later, she announced three winners: Lisa Crowell and Elsia Tinoco who each brought home $100 and Mary Koenig who came away with $50. For Burquez, whose been a member of the Trail Blazers since March of 2017, the hikes have been a great outlet, particularly during the pandemic. “It’s been great for me, I haven’t missed a single day of exercising since February, it’s been my sanity,” she assured. Meanwhile, the Franklin Trail Blazers continue to climb the path, reaping its benefits.

Under a gray marine-layer, Carpinteria Junior Lifeguards gather each weekday morning and prepare for a few hours of beach workouts and games. The cool ocean water requires commitment for swimming events but the stretches, calisthenics, and running evolutions help raise body temps before the salt water plunge. This year, JGs provide some semblance of normalcy and much needed youth activity in a world turned upside down by Covid-19.

From asphalt mining to saloons and billiards

In its earliest days, the Carpinteria Valley’s beaches, from Rincon to Summerland, gave telltale signs of oil deposits beneath the surface. We can still see them today, and a stroll on the beach can force one to get a Tar Off towelette to clean the feet.

In 1894, many Carpinteria Valley residents came down with “oil fever” when Smith Cole fell into a pool of oil digging for natural gas in Summerland.

About the same time, P. C. Higgins was exploring opportunities in Carpinteria with a courser grade of oil at the tar pits.

Roads from the Casitas Pass to Old Town would be paved with it.

Asphalt mining at the tar pits opened the opportunity for large scale employment in Carpinteria. Reports vary as to how many men were employed at the asphalt mine, as low as 200 to as many as 600. Whatever the number, it is clear that many of the men— all according to Carpinteria chronicler Arthur Miller Clark, but that seems doubtful—were former oil well diggers from Summerland, who were attracted to Carpinteria.

A hotel and a café were built to accommodate them near the tar pits, but mostly the men lived in tents. And, where there was a large workforce, saloon keepers were sure to follow to quench the thirst of the hard-working blue collar crews.

Carpinteria was by reputation a dry community. It had a large Temperance Movement population, especially among the womenfolk. But saloons were plentiful going all the way back to Carpinteria’s beginnings in Old Town.

Employment at the tar pits only cemented that legacy further, as watering holes increased dramatically with the success of asphalt mining. Clark reports that six saloon keepers left the Summerland oil fields to relocate their businesses along Linden Avenue.

One of those turn-of-century saloon keepers whose name has been preserved by history was Jack Sharkey. Sharkey set up shop about a half-block from the Train Depot on Linden. A little later, he moved to the middle of the 800 block of Linden on its westside. At this location, Sharkey’s Saloon also served briefly as Carpinteria’s Post Office. During World War I, the Carpinteria Valley News that was soon to be renamed the Carpin-

teria Herald moved into the saloon building, sharing space and displacing Sharkey’s. The era of Prohibition had begun, afterall, closing all of the saloons in Carpinteria.

Sharkey’s Pool Hall (and bar) resurfaced within the Lobero Building of shops just west of Linden near the corner on Carpinteria Avenue in the 1960s. Pete’s Pool Hall preceded it at that location, but the Sharkey’s name—the brand—was back. Lee Hohweiler (Class of 1966), remembers that he and his high school buddies would slip out of Carp High at the lunch hour to shoot pool at Sharkey’s. On one occasion, they were surprised when one of their English teachers walked in on them. The uncomfortable meeting would remain their secret. In the late 1970s, Dan Campos (Class of 1973) remembers the place being run by a man everyone called Sharkey, but it was most likely Fred Nunes (Class of 1957) who had proudly taken over as proprietor around that time, and had retained the Sharkey’s brand name.

In the 1980s, Tanker’s Pool Hall, proprietor Jess Torres (Class of 1962), finally put an end to the Sharkey’s brand with his own blue collar spin on the bar. Any way you cut it, however, Sharkey’s as a brand name had a long adventure coming from Summerland to various locations along Linden AveP. C. The place seems a bit out of place now that Carpinteria has evolved into arguably a white collar type of community with several popular quaint micro-breweries. Local farmer finds his niche

Next time you shop at the local farmers’ market, make sure you visit Jeronimo Brown of Casitas Valley Pastures for organic, locally sourced poultry and pork. “I focus on the animals that make sense to be raising in this environment,” said Brown, founder and owner of Casitas Valley Pastures. “My animals are all locally raised right here in Carpinteria.”

Brown chose to raise pork and poultry because he can feed them with the leftovers from other farms and can raise them within organic orchards, which means there are no pesticides. “Then I supplement them with non-GMO soyfree corn-free feed and fruits and vegetables from organic producers,” noted Brown. “The animals provide a service to the orchard by eating the weeds, insects and fertilizing the land. I raise all the animals in rotational systems. When they have done their job, I move them, so they don’t overgraze the land.”

Originally from Argentina, Brown learned his trade from six generations of farmers that have farmed the same plot of land. “My fathers and grandfathers taught me different techniques of animal raising and growing grains, fruits, vegetables,” he said. “Since moving to the states five years ago, I started focusing on more animal production. I was looking around for a market niche—something that was needed in the community.

Animal breeding, especially as a local farmer, is difficult because you have to go through the regulation loops. It is not an easy thing to do on your own which is why not too many people are doing it.

It is not easy to raise animals, to make it profitable, and to make it legal.”

his animals consume from the farmers’ markets. “Eating local and organic has huge health benefits and reduces your carbon print from food transportation.

It also cuts out the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. You source all your supplies locally and you sell locally,” he said.

By buying local, Brown keeps his earnings in the community. “Somebody that lives here produces something for this community, so we are not depending on regional or international

markets,” he said. “It is local and fresh, and it makes sense. We are supposed to be eating what we can grow in our area. It is crazy that we can eat fresh tomatoes all year round and complain that the tomatoes don’t have flavor!”

Before he began selling at the local farmers’ markets, Brown was selling directly to restaurants, families and neighbors, but little by little he started increasing production to the point where he needed a bigger outlet.

About a year and a half after he applied for the Santa Barbara Farmers Market Association, he was accepted to sell at three markets in the county.

For Brown, farming is a community practice that is not something you can completely do by yourself. “I feel very

grateful to have found these amazing colleagues,” he said. “We always collaborate and integrate our productions by sharing knowledge, products and this lifestyle that we are all living. When you are sustainable, your practices only work if you are connected with your community and work together.”

Canalino Closet: Moms volunteer to empower students CVN

MISSION POSSIBLE LAUREN GRAF Canalino Closet began with a simple notion: “We shouldn’t have hungry kids.”

Friends Aja Forner and Carly Bass teamed up to create the Canalino Closet, a volunteer program addressing students’ basic needs to foster their academic success. Forner, an instructional aide at Canalino Elementary School, and Bass, director of development at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, are both mothers with two children whose community volunteer work has helped Carpinteria’s kids achieve their academic goals with something as simple as a granola bar.

Forner and Bass founded Canalino Closet in 2019 to address students’ needs that Canalino educators saw firsthand, prioritizing children facing food insecurity. The two said chronic hunger is one of the greatest obstacles Canalino kids face. The Closet has provided 23 snack bins to Canalino and has donated 58 items to students in need, replacing their duct-taped sneakers and putting real beds in their homes.

The Covid-19 pandemic paused their plans to expand the project, such as finding a permanent space to store items. Forner and Bass see the project spreading beyond Canalino in the future and hope to partner with local schools to create their own “closets.” The eventual goal is to have a staffed, dedicated spot where Carpinteria’s teachers can send their students for any necessities.

Canalino Closet still operates during the summer. Forner and Bass have partnered with the 93013 Fund to deliver food boxes to families’ homes continuing their mission to empower Carpinteria students in any way possible.

And so that was an honest need. “How can this child sit there and be expected to focus when they are so hungry they can’t focus on anything else?” So, if we can get kids healthy snacks, they are able to focus on learning and not be hungry. And it’s been amazing to see these kids turn around and be these thriving students. Talking to teachers on campus, I’ve learned that these kids have turned around and they’re able to solely focus and we’ve seen their grades improve. We’ve seen them on the playground playing and being so much more interactive. We gave a child a pair of shoes and it was amazing to see him go out there and run with all his peers.

Is there anything that you have learned from the pandemic that has informed why/how you volunteer?

Carly Bass: It’s just been incredible during this time to see our community rise up and volunteer in so many different ways. I think a lot of us already knew what a special community we lived in, but to see how this community has come together through everything, it’s just reiterated again to us that this community is so special. We’re so proud to be a part of it. We want to continue in making sure that no child cannot get an education because they don’t have the supplies they need, and we know that the community feels the same way.

What does the Canalino Closet look like during the Covid-19 pandemic?

Carly Bass: Our main goal at the Closet has always been to see and meet needs as best we can. So, when the pandemic happened, we kind of just waited, took a step back to see what was going to happen and pivoted with the school. There are still needs, just in a different way.

It’s not necessarily shoes and jackets and snacks in the classroom right now.

It’s getting food to homes and getting families assistance so that they’re able to do education.

Aja Forner: I’m really excited that my children are watching me do this. It really instills in them the importance of giving back and the importance of being part of a community and taking care of others. It means a lot to me, and I’m very fortunate to live here.

What impact do you see the Closet having on students?

Carly Bass: Really, we’re just two moms who would do anything for our kids.

When we see other kids in the community whose parents don’t have resources, as moms, we’re going to support them. It doesn’t matter if it’s our kid or not; we’re
