New Year’s Day brought dozens of hikers together for the first trek of 2019 along the Carpinteria Bluffs. Nature-lovers of all ages, including dogs and children, walked a six mile loop from Carpinteria State Beach to Rincon. About three-quarters of the participants were locals from Carpinteria, a handful were from Ventura, and the rest were campers hailing from around the world. Pictured on the hike, strolling in the sunlight of a cool California day, are locals Harry Manuras and Amanda McIntyre.

City Hall relocates temporarily

Carpinteria City Hall will temporarily relocate to 4180 Via Real from Jan. 22 until the end of August. The City will continue to use the mailing address at 5775 Carpinteria Ave. All telephone numbers and email addresses will be the same.

During City Hall’s relocation, the building will undergo renovations to remediate asbestos found throughout the facility.

League of Women Voters holds panel on homelessness

The League of Women Voters will hold an informational panel on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Faulkner Gallery, Santa Barbara Public Library, to communicate volunteer opportunities to aide in Santa Barbara County’s 2019 Point in Time Count. Held on Jan. 24, the Count is part of the county’s efforts to collect local data on homelessness to understand and improve policies, including Street Outreach and Emergency Shelter and Housing. Water regulations, analysis needed

This letter is in response to the letter

by Mr. Seth Steiner (“Mystery below ground,” CVN, Vol. 25, No. 13). Steiner notes new agencies to manage water. As citizens, we need to review the laws and regulations controlling how these new agencies operate.

Does the system work? Not entirely and that’s the rub. Based on extant law, industry and county and state agencies assured us that they could control the off-site impacts from the waste and toxic materials dumped at Casmalia. These systems failed.

When we talk of recycling water or the return of fracking, we can invoke California Health and Safety Code 5410. There is also parallel language in the Water Code.

These code sections are presumed to contain the tools needed by the regulators.

This body of law deals with wastewater, contamination and pollution, as well as nuisance. These are the exact conditions that we might worry about with thermally enhanced oil recovery and what the regulators need for assuring control.

Based on Legislative Counsel’s legal research, critically needed terms in this portion of law were ill-defined or simply not defined. These terms included pollution, contamination and nuisance. This was also demonstrated in the inability of regulatory agencies to effectively deal with pollution. The regulators had poor tools.

Regulators need verifiable levels of contamination or pollution. At what level does it constitute a pollutant and therefore the creation of nuisance. This lack of definition has yet to be addressed.

Steiner notes that “toxic chemicals” can be associated with certain operations of oil recovery. But, if one cannot categorize a chemical as to whether it is a pollutant, contaminant, or its presence in wastewater, the issue will likely, like so many, just languish within bureaucratic non-action. In the meantime, the pollution may well continue.

More to worry about than lead

I’m writing in response to Bob Franco’s letter (“Lead pipes,” CVN, Vol. 25, No. 14). As sure as lead is toxic for pipes, so is PVC, which stands for poly vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen, and banned in most smart community building codes.

Best stick to copper. It’s expensive (but not compared to cancer care).

fireworks bring suffering to animals

May we please, as we celebrate the New Year, consider the trauma our beloved animals suffer due to fireworks and people shooting guns. These disturbances hurt them. Dogs, horses, cats, all of our loved family are so frightened by the fireworks that they run, shaking and horrified. Many are lost. As we celebrate, isn’t there a way to protect those we love from this terrifying experience? Please consider stopping the fireworks and have all of our community enjoy without hurting so many.

Live your life in peace

“Look at me, look at me!” That’s how my dad would mock adults garishly calling attention to themselves. “Just like children,“ he’d say. To be honest, I suppose my Facebook posts are similarly vain, if not as childish. However, I’m more intent on sharing things that interest me, rather than calling attention to myself. Unless sharing is just a devious way of calling attention to myself.

Life is like surfing a spectacular wave.

It begins low and slow. Gradually lifting one higher and higher. At first you don’t even know what’s happening. Then you begin to see and feel amazing things.

I try to pay homage to people and pets I’ve known. I imagine they are aware of my thoughts. I might feel regret I haven’t thought of someone, or a pet, or someone else’s pet, or just a tiny creature that caught my fancy.

Anthropomorphism they call it, when a human being projects his feeling onto another life form. A guy said today, just say “all” or everyone, and you’re covered.

Maybe, but that’s all I can do. Still I try to get the ones most obviously connected to my life. Parents, sisters, relatives, friends, personal pets. You’re probably in there somewhere, but if not, you know how it is. I can’t remember everything. I did the best I could.

If I had the power, I would stand before the people and say: “I quit. The power and responsibility that goes with it, is yours. Live your life as you choose, and in peace. Never accept anyone as your master.”

Bear goodwill

Just as we are amiably greeting each other with “happy new year!” I see that the first national figure has signaled her intention to run for president in 2020. We all know what this means: it’s the beginning of a grueling two-year long season of even more venomous political discourse, among the candidates and others. All the usual transmitters of this stuff will soon start heating up for the slugfest, including, of course, social media. It’s plugyour-ears time for the rest of us.

So, I believe, it becomes all the more important that all of us every day folk, friends, neighbors, family members, remember that what we say to each other, directly and indirectly, and how we say it, and how we treat each other has more relevance in our lives and more impact on our well-being and more permanence than anything that’s said in the political arena. I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions, but I propose that starting today, and especially when the fur starts to fly, we try to continue to bear goodwill toward each other, to continue actually wishing each other happiness. Happy New Year.

Set feeling-based goals this year

Some people throw big parties with noisemakers and confetti, some travel to watch the ball drop in Times Square, others celebrate by giving hugs and cheers. For some, it can also be quiet and very personal—a time of reflection for the year that has passed, remembering loved ones, pausing to appreciate all we have, no matter how much or little, and setting goals for the year that is about to begin. Regardless of how we acknowledge the beginning of a new year, it marks the start of something new and special. It is an ideal time to refresh and restart.

Dr. Joelle Hood, who works with educators, leadership teams and entire organizations on mindfulness, team building, and social and emotional learning, suggests we approach setting goals for the new year in a way that is connected with feelings rather than tasks. “We tend to set the usual goals and resolutions—lose 10 pounds, get a better job, buy a house— but often we find that when we get those things we don’t feel any better,” she explains. “We are still searching for that certain feeling, because we’re not even sure how we want to feel.”

“This year, turn that goal setting upside down,” Hood advises. “You can first take some time to look within and decide how you really want to feel—Bold?

Creative? Connected?—and then create intentions or goals based on feeling the way you most want to feel.”

In fact, this is a good time for all of us to reflect on the year that has passed and check for what has worked well and what needs more of our attention. Starting where Hood suggests—at the endpoint we hope to achieve—sounds like an effective way to shape the year’s journey.

Now is also the time for appreciating the best of 2018. To our educators, parents, business partners, first responders, neighbors, grandparents, extended family members and volunteers—you are all community treasures. For those of us who interact in our schools every day, we know how much the crossing guard, office manager, bus driver, playground supervisor, food server, counselor and other non-classroom personnel mean to our children. You are often the first

As we take time to celebrate the new year, I send an extra thanks to all of our teachers, who are in the middle of a much-deserved holiday as they prepare to enter into the second half of the school year. Our teachers help shape students’ identities in school, they encourage our children through meticulous planning, teaching, feedback and support. For our teachers, we are enormously grateful.

Also, I’d like to give extra encouragement to our students. The start of 2019, half way through the school year, is a time to take stock of what habits you might continue, modify, or even eliminate. We encourage all our students to continue habits that have helped them in school, such as organizing work and planning ahead, and focusing on social circles that foster heathy relationships. You bring us all hope for our future and we believe in you.

As Hood advises, we all could benefit from focusing on how we want to feel at the end of this coming year, and what it would take to get there. Students can consider leaning forward and resolving to make the second half of the school year even better than the first.

Defining Summerland

Summerland certainly has. Established as a spiritualist community in 1889, the town’s tiny tent-sized lots have morphed into some of the South Coast’s priciest real estate.

From a spiritualist haven where campers flocked to Liberty Hall to witness mediums communicate with the dead, to the oil boom town that followed, Summerland has gone through some dramatic reincarnations.

Some changes aren’t so dramatic. Some are slower transformations. Lately, with its beautiful beach, handy little park and nearby amenities, Summerland has become something of a tourist spot, complete with vacation rentals. Retirees, too, are attracted to the ocean views and relaxed small-town atmosphere. Young families love the town’s powerhouse little school.

A couple of new businesses focused on home and garden goods are now catering to a more upscale clientele. A healthy downtown can function like a backbone, supporting a varied and vibrant community. But too many empty buildings in Summerland’s business area signal a town half asleep, slow to wake up to the prosperous times enjoyed in nearby areas.

A healthy downtown can function like a backbone, supporting a varied and vibrant community. 21st century identity? What can be done to strengthen what the town already is to make it what it can become? Local resident John Heil took on the task of trying to pin that down. Now semi-retired, Heil is the former president of Lawry’s Foods and a current board director of Lawry’s Restaurants.

Heil spent several months surveying a spectrum of Summerland habitués— residents, business owners, visitors and county officials. He presented the findings of his “Summlerland Long Term Plan, Vision and Strategy” at the Dec. 12 meeting of the Summerland Citizens Association.

According to Heil, the plan’s goal was setting “more ambitious plans for the future, while elevating our expectations and enhancing the community as never before.” Uppermost in his mind was establishing the “most important and commonly shared priorities going forward.”

Based on interviews, Heil listed the community’s seven priorities in order of importance: fire prevention and emergency preparedness; revitalization of Summerland’s business district; optimization of the U.S. 101 expansion and Evans underpass; oil on the beach and coastline enhancement; creating an elevated sense of community; town beautification; optimization and management of increased traffic.

More challenging was trying to pin down Summerland’s nature. A summary of physical attributes, based on the vision

provided in interviews, was a “seaside, hillside, small town jewel that is uniquely south-facing, framed by the Santa Ynez Mountains in our background and the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands just before us.”

Then there was the more psychological component: “We are an outdoor community that appreciates our rich history and heritage and embodies a year-round pursuit of our surroundings with an ‘always summertime’ attitude.” I really like the concluding part: “We are Summerland… and our name says it all.”

Where does all this research and delving into wishes, psyches and visions go?

On behalf of the SCA, Heil is requesting the formation of individual committees devoted to studying and working on each of the seven designated priorities in order to develop a roadmap “creating a clear and effective path toward realizing our potential.”

Heil’s findings were greeted with enthusiasm at the well-attended December meeting. Many have already signed up to work on individual priorities. As chair of the Long Term Planning Committee, Heil is hoping to engage as many interested and energized people as possible to participate in what he describes as a “crusade to revitalize and elevate Summerland to its full potential.”

Who can resist an appeal like that?

Especially if joining one of the seven committees doesn’t necessarily commit you to much work? You can join just to hear fur-

The first Letter Perfect is located on Coast Village Road in Montecito, and Person reported that they were badly impacted by the Thomas fire and floods.

The setback doesn’t seem to have affected Person’s desire to expand her art-centered business into Summerland’s most architecturally arresting downtown building.

I wandered through the upstairs gallery, still hung with wonderful landscapes by local artists. Curated by artist Michael Drury, the exhibition was organized by Person and staged as a fundraiser for Heal the Ocean from Dec. 7 to 9.

Person sees incredible potential in the building’s space and hopes to make the pop-up permanent, possibly even attracting a partner restaurant in the future.

Kudos to Person for her adventurous spirit and for recognizing Summerland’s great potential.

One good thing: Fountains going green by being repurposed as succulent gardens.

Art in Film 2019 series comes to the Alcazar

The upcoming film series, Art in Film 2019, sponsored by the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center in collaboration with the Alcazar Theatre, will begin on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at the Alcazar.

The series of five films begins with “City of Gold,” a documentary about Jonathan Gold, the world-renowned food critic for LA Weekly and the Los Angeles Times.

The film portrays the fascinating inside story about Gold’s exploration of the ethnic and alternative LA eateries that ultimately changed perceptions of Los Angeles’ food culture.

Films are carefully reviewed and selected based on audience appeal and content variety. Carpinteria artist Pamela Hill Enticknap will introduce each film and lead a Q&A afterwards. All movies will be shown at 3 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, January through May, with the exception of April which will move to the 28th because of the Easter holiday. Warriors receive a Christmas defeat at Holiday Classic Newbury Park vs. Carpinteria Boys basketball

Playing in their third tournament in December, the Carpinteria High School basketball team took on Newbury Park in the opening round of the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic last week in a 10:30 a.m. matchup the day after Christmas. The Panthers from Ventura county came in with an impressive resume, an 11-5 mark and a Number-14 ranking in CIFSouthern Section’s Division Three-AA. After falling behind 16-9 by the end of the first quarter, the Warriors never recovered, dropping a 74 to 44 decision.

Despite Noah Nuño’s seven first quarter points, the Red and White had difficulty keeping up with Newbury Park’s shooting guard Matt Solomon who knocked down 11, including three three-pointers to give his team the early lead. “We definitely didn’t have the same energy as we had before Christmas,” said Carpinteria coach Corey Adam.

“We weren’t back-pedaling, we weren’t curling, we weren’t doing the counters to their aggressive defense,” Adam explained.

The Warriors did tally 14 in the second quarter, as Dylan O’Neill pitched in five and Nuño added another five. But, two more three-pointers by Solomon helped to extend the Panther lead to 35-23 going into the half. Solomon ended up being the game’s leading scorer with 30.

Things did not improve much for Carpinteria in the third quarter, as they couldn’t get their shots to fall. As a result, the Warriors mustered only six points.

However, they were able to slow down Solomon who only scored three in the third; but his teammates Andrew Wilson and Nickerson Demelfi contributed seven and five, respectively. The Panther duo each scored 12 on the day.

Newbury Park built a 50-29 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter was the Warriors’

highest scoring quarter as they put up 15 points. Nuño scored nine in the fourth, driving to the basket for two field goals and drawing fouls, and converting five of seven free throws. The senior led the team with 23; while, O’Neill poured in 11.

The next morning, Carpinteria played Chatsworth in a consolation game, falling by a score of 78 to 55. The Warriors led at the end of the first quarter, 21 to 18. “In the second quarter, too many turnovers and offensive rebounds,” explained Adam of his team’s first quarter advantage that turned into a 10-point halftime deficit. Carpinteria was able to reduce the margin down to five points at the end of the third, but were unable to sustain the momentum that they had going into the quarter. “Sophomore Jose Suarez had a solid game, finishing with 11 points,” said the Warriors’ coach.

On Friday, Carpinteria lost the final game, 63-58, to Burroughs of Burbank.

The Warriors allowed three, two-point baskets for the entire game; but the Indians hit nine three-pointers in the first half and 15 for the game. “I’m really proud of my guys, we hadn’t been playing well until today, and it would have been easy to mail it in with a team raining threes on us; but they showed their real character today,” said Adam. “Burroughs is a school five times our size, and we were a few bounces going the other way from beating them.” Nuño led the way with 21 points, and Ian Reed had 10; as the Warriors allowed the fewest points of the three games they played in the tournament.

Corona Del Mar ended up beating the host team, Santa Barbara, for the Holiday Classic championship, 50-37.

Carpinteria now heads deep into Citrus Coast League play with their next game at Malibu.

On New Year’s Day, 70 hikers—about three-quarters locals—took a six mile hike along the bluffs from Rincon County Beach Park to Carpinteria State Beach downtown.

The healthy hikers logged approximately 20,000 steps as they welcomed 2019.

Walkers and their dogs traverse State Beach on their New Year’s Day procession.

John Muir said, “In every walk with nature, one received far more than he seeks.” These locals are off to a good start this year.
