Welcome to the 2018-19 school year By Diana Rigby, CUSD Superintendent

We welcome new and returning families to the 2018-19 school year and we look forward to greeting our students on the first day of school, Aug. 27. During the summer months, administrators, teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare for another exciting school year for CUSD. The campuses are filled with large construction equipment and workers busily preparing for the new Gen 7 classrooms and replacing roofs, sidewalks and restrooms. A new VOIP phone system has been installed to replace the outdated phone lines. Teachers participated in workshops and conferences to improve their instructional skills, learn new curriculum and develop new units of study. We hired a new Interim Principal at Carpinteria Middle School, Lisa O’Shea, from Oxnard High School and she is looking forward to meeting CMS staff and families. We also hired new teachers for kindergarten and second grade at Canalino, kindergarten at Aliso, kindergarten and first grade at

COME DANCE WITH US! Diana Rigby Carpinteria Family School, art, Spanish and English at CMS, and ag and math at CHS. School offices will open Aug. 1 and we encourage any families with questions to contact their principal. The 2018-19 District Calendar is posted on the district website cusd.net/.

High School By Max Coppel

1

2 CHS senior Max Coppel shares his wisdom with incoming freshmen.

3

Don’t carry all your books around. When I was a freshman I felt like I needed to carry all my books around. It really puts a strain on your back. Just use your locker and go to it in between periods. Go support the sports teams. Having a cheering crowd on your side can make the difference between winning and losing and you might just be part of something great.

Try to get Mrs. DeWitte or Mrs. Carlton as teachers. They’re both really nice and fun teachers to have.

8 9 10

Get involved! Join football or do choir—this is an excellent way to not only discover your passions but also get to know your fellow classmates. Avoid the taco meat and pasta. The salad bar is a solid option for the off days.

7

Grades actually matter in high school. In middle school everyone graduates no matter what but in high school grades can seriously affect your future. So don’t make the mistake of not really trying your freshman year.

The jump to high school isn’t so bad. High school isn’t like it is in the movies. Everyone’s pretty nice and helpful, especially for your first year.

Take classes that you enjoy. A lot of people feel that they need the hardest schedule they can get or have to take classes that they don’t enjoy and this can really drain the fun out of school. In high school you have the ability to get into fun electives like art and culinary. Don’t dress to impress. Some people feel that they need to dress up for school. If you’re a fashion icon then go ahead, but people really don’t care if you’re wearing designer brands or pajamas. So just go in what you feel best in to be in at school. Go to the library for seventh period. Mrs. Bradley the librarian is super nice and fun to be around. It’s a great place to get your work done, play UNO with some friends, or even just lay back and read a book.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

ALISO BY ISABELLA RODRIGUEZ

1

It’s a great social environment—perfect to meet new friends.

2 3 4

There are awesome playgrounds in the main area, but all the play grounds are pretty cool. The water fountain by the cafeteria is the only water fountain that has cold water!

The cafeteria has a pretty good chicken sandwich AND there’s a salad bar!

Isabella Rodriguez is a fifth-grader at Aliso Elementary School.

You’re going to do a lot of educational online activities. We get Principal’s Recess on certain Fridays with popsicles. Remember to get a ticket from your teacher.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

CANALINO 1 6 BY EMMA WHITTENTON

There are yellow lines around all classroom doors. Those mean don’t walk through them, or you can get smacked by a door.

Every Monday we have pizza for hot lunch.

2 3 4

Friday at the computer lab you can play animal jam before school starts.

There are two tether ball courts. Fourth grade has a short rope. Small kids play with the longer rope. One day of the month we have family picnic. Your family comes and has a picnic with you for lunch.

5

When you are at recess, there is a bathroom where the TK class is. You don’t need to run to the far one.

8

7

Emma Whittenton is a fourthgrader at Canalino Elementary School.

There are three flip bars for flips. The bars right next to the TK class are not for flipping.

When you are in K through second grade you get to have a big buddy. If you are in third grade through fifth grade, then you are a big buddy. Big buddies help their little buddies and do activities together.

9 10

Walk in the hallway so you don’t slip and fall.

At the end of the year we go to a beach day!

every week in Coastal View news and online at coastalview.com Carpinteria Middle Schoolers from left, Emma Petersen, Katrina Zlogar and Eduardo Vences, tell it like it is.

1

Don’t get a backpack with just two pockets. Get a backpack with multiple pockets so you can be organized and everything isn’t a blob.

2 3

Have questions but too shy to ask them in class? Write them down and ask the teacher, or your parents later.

Review your notes and lessons at the end of every week, not just before tests. It makes tests so much easier.

4 5

Try not to day dream or look around the class when the teacher is talking or something important is happening. Stay focused.

6

Put notes in one folder and homework in a separate one so studying is easier.

Take in everything the teacher says!

7 8 9 10

Clean your backpack out often, and keep your work areas like your desks organized and tidy. Its less distracting and better for focusing.

Drink lots of water and eat healthy. You’ll feel better when you have to wake up early and pay attention in class. Always do your homework! It doesn’t take much time and missing a few assignments could bring your grades down a lot. Remember! Pay attention in class, do your homework, study.
