“A NOTEBOOK CAN NEVER REPLACE A GOODNIGHT’S SLEEP AND A HEALTHY BREAKFAST.” BEST ADVICE TO PARENTS/ GUARDIANS to get their kids ready for school: To remember that educators in Carpinteria are always here to answer any questions and/ or concer ns you may have, especially as classes approach.
What’s the PEP TALK YOU WISH PARENTS GAVE KIDS when they’ve had a hard day:
pets, heroes, etc. Luckily, there’s always another day. That has always helped me to “not take things too seriously” and inspires me to lift my gaze and see anew. We are fortunate to live in a place where teachers in our community are constantly willing to help students in any way they can whenever they have hard days like this.
For PARENTS ON A BUDGET, what’s the one school supply worth splurging on: Prior to becoming a teacher, I was a research scientist in the area of nutrigenomics (how food impacts the structure and function of organisms). During this time, I recognized, from an epidemiological perspective, how nutrition and health can often be overlooked in many households. School districts in our county do an amazing job at continuously seeking ways to help students succeed by often providing tools and resources needed for classes, especially if a student’s family is on a budget. If a student does not have the financial means of obtaining a three-ringed
Everyone goes through hard days, even teachers, parents,
Proud to Serve Carpinteria Since 1947
I’m fascinated by the way students begin to recognize teachers as fellow community members. I want all students in my classroom to know that I, just like them, have questions, ideas and aspirations. I am a teacher because I find joy in teaching others about the dynamic nature of science and I want my students to know that I am here to explore with them their ideas regarding the intricacies of science. We can learn together!
YOUR BIGGEST HOPE for each student: Every student I’ve ever had is talented in their own way. Whether it’s finding passion through scientific discovery to cultivating interest in engineering, I hope each student realizes the limitless value they have to offer our community and planet. I hope each student finds joy in their interests and develops aspirations that can propel them through different accomplishments throughout their life.
I encourage parents to establish communication from the get-go with their child’s teachers in order to stay abreast with the daily progress completed by their child at school.

“BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR CHILD’S ROUTINE BOTH AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL.” BEST ADVICE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS to get their kids ready for preschool and childcare: I believe that parents should prepare their children ahead of time by reminding them what their new routine will be, by giving them the opportunity to visit the school/preschool ahead of time and by meeting their new teachers. This gives children more sense of security and they’ll feel more comfortable on the first day of school. It also gives them something to look forward to. Parents should also involve kids in picking out their new lunch box, backpack and even picking out their school clothes. Children will feel excited and more independent by participating in their new routine—which will give them a sense of empowerment, security, confidence and independence.
What’s the PEP TALK you wish parents gave kids when they have a hard day: I think it’s important for parents to talk to their children about letting their teachers know how they feel. Some children find opening up to a new adult difficult and overwhelming because they are building trust with an unfamiliar adult. Sometimes all it takes is for a parent to give a child permission to speak openly to other adults. It’s important for children to feel comfortable going to a teacher for help or with any questions or concerns, or to simply feel the warmth of an adult.
For PARENTS ON A BUDGET, what’s the one school supply worth splurging on: With our program being year-round and full-time, splurging on a backpack and lunch box is the best money spent. Kids will need to bring a healthy morning and afternoon snack along with a healthy lunch on a daily basis.
Your BASIC EXPECTATION of parents: Talk to your children about school expectations. Talk about how to be safe, friendly and respectful. Be consistent with your child’s routine both at home and at school.
Let teachers know if you have any concerns or questions about your child or their school program. Notify teachers of any changes or adaptations in the family. Have open lines of communication. Respect the school’s policies and procedures.
Your BASIC EXPECTATIONS of students: Children should come to school ready to have fun, to make friends and to be kind to each other. Be ready to learn in a fun, safe and caring environment.
Your BIGGEST HOPE for each student: My biggest hope is that they have a year full of growth—that each child grows socially, emotionally and academically. I want students to develop a strong sense of self that will help them become our future’s strong independent leaders.
PARENTS CAN HELP their kids by:
Have set schedules at home and school and reinforce the expectations we have in school at home. Also, talk to your children every day and be involved in their life.
Parents can HELP THEIR CHILD’S TEACHER by:
Reinforcing rules and expectations at home. Get involved in school activities, projects and school meetings. “A person’s a person no matter how small.” ~ Dr. Seuss

B E S T A D V I C E T O PA R E N T S / GUARDIANS to get their kids ready for school:
If your child is attending a new school, you’ll want to try and take them on a campus visit before their
Coastal View News • Carpinteria, California
first day. They’ll feel more comfortable with the new school and have less anxiety if they are familiar with the school’s setup (the location of bathrooms, lockers, classes, lunch area, playground, etc.). If possible, kids also benefit from meeting teachers and classmates ahead of time.
“COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY WITH ALL TEACHER/PARENT RELATIONSHIPS.” What’s the PEP TALK YOU WISH PARENTS GAVE KIDS when they’ve had a hard day:
It is vital to set time aside every night to talk about the day as a family. What was your child’s peak/valley of the day? The most difficult part for parents sometimes is getting your child to open up. Starting this tradition early on facilitates an open dialogue. Try to help your child establish the habit of ending each day grateful for something that was learned that day.
For PARENTS ON A BUDGET, what’s the one school supply worth splurging on:
Every school handles school supplies differently. Some schools provide all supplies and some supply a portion of the supplies. Your child’s school might assign parents a list of essential supplies, so, check with your child’s school. I always request the basics from my parents: backpack, water bottle and lunchbox. I prefer the eco-friendly containers like Planet Box or Earth Hero. These containers are easy to clean and minimize the use of plastic bags.
Your BASIC EXPECTATION of parents:
Communication is the key with all teacher/parent relationships. I always want my parents to know that they can call, text or email me with any questions or concerns they might have. It is also important for parents to share with their child’s teacher any health or emotional issues that the child or family may be facing. An open line of communication between parents and teachers is a critical component to a child’s academic success. It is also imperative that your child arrives to school on time. It really is a disservice to your child when he or she arrives to school late because your child is missing out on key academic concepts. This time is also integral in making social connections with other children. Being prompt is also an important life skill that everyone benefits from.
Your BASIC EXPECTATION of students:
Always try your best! The Golden Rule – Treat others the way you want to be treated. This covers every quality of a conscientious student that I try to establish in my classroom. It’s OK to make mistakes. In fact, I tell all of my students I expect them to make mistakes. I am constantly pointing out to my students when I make a blunder. By sharing my mistakes, I’m demonstrating that even adults make mistakes and what’s important is to move forward.
YOUR BIGGEST HOPE for each student:
As a teacher, my top priority is to foster a love of learning. For me, the biggest compliment I can receive as a teacher is to hear from parents that their child does not want to go on vacation because he/ she loves school so much and does not want to miss out. It’s also important to inculcate a sense of curiosity. I want my students to understand that school isn’t just about knowing the answers to somebody else’s questions—it’s about having the curiosity and drive to ask and answer their own questions. My wish for all of my students is that they feel safe, loved, understood, respected, inspired and challenged.
PARENTS CAN HELP their kids by:
Parents should work to instill a sense of pride and accountability for kids when it comes to school and homework. Parents need to communicate high, yet reasonable, expectations and goals for their child’s academic achievement. Take the time to incorporate your child in setting goals and expectations. Get involved with your child’s school. There are so many opportunities for parents to support their child’s school. Students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly and have better social skills. Your involvement is tangible proof of the value that you assign to education in your family.
PARENT TIP: Check out the Aries Application for keeping track of your child’s grades, missing assignments, etc. This is especially helpful for families with middle and high schoolers.
