It's back to school time, readers!

Now that you’ve really picked up the rhythm of summer and found your groove, it’s time for school to start again. But you can dry your eyes along with the bathing suits because we’ve got a slew of great tips from some of the parents out there who manage to make it look easy. At CVN we realize that you’re all superparents, but even the best mom or dad out there will glean a little something from these pro tips. Read on!

Come Aug. 23, the Endow family will manage to get ninth-grade twins Nathan and Sydney and fifth-grader Matthew out the door and comfortably into seats in Carpinteria High and Aliso schools, respectively. Supermom Susan, who works as a teacher at All Saints by the Sea Preschool in Montecito, has honed her skills for making that transition back to school over the last several years. She and her husband, Greg, who is a fourth-generation cut flower wholesaler, keep their kids busy all summer so that the fall is just the next busy chapter.

School is just around the corner. How does your family prepare for that big gearshift from long days of vacation to long days in the classroom?

We try to keep summer days from becoming boring and unstructured. They seem to thrive on routine; therefore, their schedule of Carpinteria Junior Guards and swim team/water polo five days a week makes the transition less significant.

Back to school shopping is part fun, part stressful and part expensive. Do you have suggestions for how parents can make it as painless as possible?

Online shopping. My kids don’t want to go to the store any more than I want to take them. This way they can make their choices in the comfort of their own home, have a larger selection, more opportunities for sales as well as free shipping.

It’s time to start packing school lunches again. Do you have picky eaters? What do you pack to make lunches appealing and nutritious?

We don’t have too picky of eaters for the most part, although I often get the preferred Clif Bars mixed up between the three kids. Hot lunches are usually favored.

Deli-like sandwiches are greatly appreciated and will make an occasional appearance, which takes more planning than it should. Frequently changing up the raw fruits and veggies keeps it fresh and new where they’re more inclined to eat it.

With the start of school comes the start of homework. What’s the homework routine in your house? How do you get your kids to refocus after a summer of play?

The older the kids get the more they become self-starters in the homework department. Typically, they get done what they can between school and sports. Any remainder is completed at the end of their day. We generally don’t have the television or gaming on during the school week. As far as refocusing after summer, we try to get our sleep schedules back on track and start a good book as the first day of school nears.

Mornings can be so hard during the school year. How does your family maximize efficiency so that kids are dressed, fed and out the door before the school bell rings?

My husband helps a lot in this area when he is home as I am not a morning person and need to get to work myself. Our priority is a proper breakfast. Non-perishables for lunches are packed by the kids the night before. Backpacks are packed the night before. Yet regardless of all of the planning and preparation, it’s always very rushed.

The few tardies we get dinged with are sadly always on my mornings.

Back to school shopping is part fun, part stressful and part expensive. Do you have suggestions for how parents can make it as painless as possible?

I think ordering online and having it deliver to your home is the best way to go.

I don’t ever go overboard on clothes/shoe shopping. The kids grow out of things so fast. I just make sure they have a few new things and a new pair of shoes. Also, if Frankie’s backpack is still good from the year before, then he will use it again.

It’s time to start packing school lunches again. Do you have picky eaters? What do you pack to make lunches appealing and nutritious?

Yes, Frankie can be picky, but he likes to eat in the cafeteria (depends on the menu).

If he wants me to make him a lunch, then he likes a half of PB&J, fruit or yogurt and water. He does not like cold veggies, so I will pack him an extra piece of fruit. He will sometimes get Pirate’s Booty, and he loves it.

With the start of school comes the start of homework. What’s the homework routine in your house? How do you get your kids to refocus after a summer of play?

Frankie loves his “relax” time, so he knows the faster he can get his homework done, the faster he can relax. He will get his homework done at Boys & Girls Club or first thing when he gets home. He doesn’t complain about it too much, because he knows he can chill after it’s all done.

Mornings can be so hard during the school year. How does your family maximize efficiency so that kids are dressed, fed and out the door before the school bell rings?

For us, getting them to bed early the night before is the key. They are good about waking up, but we have to start about one hour beforehand in order to get everything done.

It’s not too bad for us. Our schedule did not change much during the summer. The kids still had to get up early for summer school or daycare, so hopefully we do not have to prepare too much more for the school year.

Tips from supermom Toni Thompson

Immediately after the Thompson family moved to Carpinteria 10 years ago, Toni’s warm smile and helpful hands became a staple at just about every child-centered activity in town.

Toni and husband Pete have two girls, Cassidy, 8, and Sammi, 12. Having volunteered with Parents For Canalino since Sammi was in Kindergarten, Toni is this year’s co-president of the organization.

School is just around the corner. How does your family prepare for that big gearshift from long days of vacation to long days in the classroom?

Our family loves summer and it is definitely a tough transition to head back to school! I have learned (the hard way!) that my attitude will set the tone for how my girls approach the school year. I try to stay focused on the exciting part of heading back to school—seeing old friends and meeting new ones! We also try to head to bed a little earlier each week as school approaches so it’s not a huge shock the night before school!

After school we hit the beach when we can to work off some of that energy from the busy school day and hang on to that “summer feeling.” (“Beach therapy” seems to cure most things for our family!)

Back to school shopping is a favorite mom-daughter tradition in our family. I now try to take each girl solo, and starting in late July/early Aug we scope out the fun end of summer sales at the malls. And we love that cute Traveling Pants on Linden Avenue for amazing deals on great clothes too. We try to organize and purge their closets to really see what the girls need and keep it simple with the “new clothes wish list.”

For school supplies, we love shopping at the Dollar Store on State Street for the basics. Anything they don’t have there, we can grab at Staples next door. The list of what your child will need should be available at the school so don’t forget to ask at the office when you drop off your Back to School paperwork. And don’t be afraid to go through last year’s supplies and make the most of what you bought last year!

It’s time to start packing school lunches again. Do you have picky eaters? What do you pack to make lunches appealing and nutritious?

My girls both love the hot lunches at school. They are not picky eaters (They would starve to death at our house if they were.) so we post the school lunch calendar on the fridge and the girls or I check it the night before. On the odd day where they want to pack a lunch, our goal is to make it the night before. (Key word here is goal). Apple slices in a Ziplock with lemon juice are a favorite snack with Ritz crackers or goldfish.

Reusable water bottles (with name on them) are also great to get ready the night before.

Homework is our least favorite part of heading back to school, no doubt. We do not have all the answers on “best practices” here but always look to other amazing super moms/dads for what has worked for their family. The kids work so hard at school that I think a break right after school is important (beach therapy or trampoline or bike riding, etc.)

The trick—that we don’t always master—is to transition into homework time before dinner if possible. Our family battles the “procrastination” disorder so we are always looking for new and better ways to stay on top of the homework battle and skip the “too tired from school day tears” we often get during the homework hour.

Sometimes just moving homework time to a new location (usually outside) has helped. We also start mid-summer with 30 minutes of Khan Academy or Math Bingo a few times a week to help review and get back in a good routine.

Mornings are not our friend here at the Thompson house! We are famous for our mad morning dash out the door frantically scrambling for all the items the girls need for the day. Most days we are the example of what not to do.

Always the optimist, I believe with each new school year we can all improve, and I strive to learn from those oh-so-smart turbo parents I know and copy their best ideas. One amazing mom I know just posted the best photo/idea on Facebook of her new system for keeping all the important items right by the front door: a three tiered shelf with backpacks on top shelf, jackets on middle shelf and shoes on the bottom.

I definitely plan to copy this idea. Having outfits laid out the night before is also key to minimizing the morning madness.

The best days always seem to be the ones that the girls either walk or bike to school and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early—even if those days only happen in my imagination.

Tips from superparents Brittney and Kyle Crooks

Seven years of parenting and three little girls have taught Brittney and Kyle Crooks some excellent lessons in getting the school year off on the right foot. This year the Carpinteria family will have Emma, 7, at the Carpinteria Family School, and Abrah, 4, and Norah, 2, in preschool at Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop.

School is just around the corner. How does your family prepare for that big gearshift from long days of vacation to long days in the classroom?

Kyle: First and foremost, we take an inventory of our marriage and kids’ hearts.

With a grasp on the most important elements, we can see the big picture of life, discuss what will help each person come to life in the upcoming season and plan accordingly. We talk to each other, ask for our kids’ input as well and really invite them to own the change that’s coming. That way, we’re all on the same page, and we have a foundation to come back to that helps us reorient when life gets crazy. “Remember when we talked about what was most important? What did we think? Is that still important or do we need to reassess?”

Brittney: The girls love seeing a visual of what’s coming. We make a paper chain and count down until school starts. There’s anticipation built around something fun and exciting.

Brittney: In Carpinteria, we’re blessed with summer weather well into October.

With the addition of a new pair of shoes, our kiddos just keep wearing their summer clothes. By the time the weather actually turns, all the fall clothes are on sale. St. Joe’s and Traveling Pants are a gift to our community when it comes to great deals.

Kyle: I’m all for an unofficial school uniform. We make a few simple outfits that will last the majority of the year. That way, the girls know what they have, we like it, and the decisions (and arguments) are handled on the front end.

Brittney: We do a lot of snacking as a family: fruits, veggies, meat, cheese and nuts.

Each of our kids has a favorite thing, so once a week we give them a treat.

Kyle: One of the worst parts of after-school is cleaning out a lunch box where things explode and sit all day. We try to put food in there that will either get eaten, or at worst, come home in one piece.

Kyle: No adult likes to work all day, then come home and work some more. We want our girls to have a chance to decompress and have a snack. We’ve seen that this helps them focus after a day at school, then do their homework.

Brittney: It’s helpful for our girls to know that their job is school, and homework is a part of that. The job’s not done until class and schoolwork are completed. Our home is a learning environment, so school is just an extension of what the girls do every day anyways. Having this routine is key, because the structure helps them thrive.

Brittney: This has taken me seven years to learn: you have to get up significantly earlier than your kids. It’s the difference between them running the show, or you.

Which one would you want?

Kyle: We set out clothes and do a crockpot of oatmeal the night before. That way, melt-downs over getting dressed and eating are squashed early on. Also, we give the kids a 15- and 10-minute warning so they know when we’re going.

Tips from supermom Rori Trovato

Rori Trovato’s name is best associated with her creamy, organic ice cream brand, Rori’s, made right here in Carpinteria and sold in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

However, the super businesswoman is also a supermom. She has an 11-year-old son who attends Carpinteria’s Howard School, and somehow she finds time to have him pressed and dressed for school every day.

It’s the mornings that really are hectic. Snacks, ironed uniforms, homework completed, breakfast, dogs and then I need to get ready! But on Sundays, I put aside a couple hours to get things organized, and it makes the whole week seem much easier.

Howard’s uniforms make the shopping easier, much less stressful, but not as much fun. All I can say is, thank goodness for the internet. I order almost all of my son’s supplies online as well as his clothes.

My son has his “go to” lunches he loves. I always have those items on hand so I know if all else fails, I can pack him up a healthy lunch. The Howard School always offers hot lunches he likes, so I’m pretty lucky.

Our rule is homework first, then play—no exceptions. Fortunately my son is pretty good at getting it done and not complaining too much about the process. On days when it’s a subject he’s not excited about, we work it out together.

I know the absolute “out the door” time and I set the timer! Pre-packed lunches or snacks help, and having uniforms ready. Breakfast is a good time to eat a hot meal in my house, so I usually take the time to make eggs, smoothies or other low sugar breakfasts.

The Ocean Arts: A Writing Course – Mature teens are invited to join Christian Beamish, author of “Voyage of the Cormorant” and contributor to Surfer Magazine and DEEP Magazine in a workshop on ocean-themed writing that will meet for six Tuesday evenings. Suggested readings in Sea Literature will serve class discussions on the craft of writing narrative non-fiction. September 13 – October 18.
