When the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, we all want a reverse Cinderella experience. We want our most fabulous self to suddenly appear—poof—and stick around for the rest of our life. Of course actual change takes hard work, the kind that involves sweat and concentration and controlling fierce and ugly urges. MINUTE Play a favorite song. We don’t need scientists to tell us that music makes us feel good, but studies show that our favorite tunes do more than just perk us up temporarily—they release endorphins and improve immunity. So next time you hop in the car, crank up the radio, belt out the lyrics and ignore the stares from other drivers.

HOUR Go outside. Now that our air is breathable—open the door and go outside. Movement will keep your ticker ticking longer, and sunshine on your skin is key to good health (in moderation). Preliminary research suggests that the vitamin D that comes from exposure to sunlight helps regulate the immune system, supports heart health, can help normalize blood pressure and promote healthy aging. It has also been linked to improved mood.

DAY Take a day trip. Carpinteria’s a lovely place to live and work. We know. But sometimes when you stay at home, the siren song of the couch is too hard to resist, and the next thing you know, you’ve binge watched two seasons of Game of Thrones over a party-sized bag of Doritos. Plan a day trip instead. You might spend an hour or two in the car, but you’ll have loads of healthy body-moving opportunities wherever your destination might be.

Day trip ideas: To escape the ugly scar of the Thomas Fire, head south with boogie boards to sled the massive Point Mugu Sand Dune along Highway 1 or hike the nearby Ray Miller Trail for views of the coast well worth the sweaty ascent. To the north, the trails behind Gaviota State Beach offer hours of exploration opportunities. Alternatively, head out to sea on an Island Packers boat and romp around Santa Cruz Island for a day.

Pair arrested for burglary of marijuana farm

Deputies arrested two suspects for stealing over 50 pounds of marijuana and marijuana plants from a Foothill Road farm on Dec. 26.

A report of trespassing and vandalism at an orchard came in to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department around 9 a.m. that morning, and investigating deputies found that the orchard had been used as access to a neighboring nursery. A hole had been cut into the fence, and the marijuana farm next Patrick Carty of Ventura and door had been burglarized.

Courtney Wallace of San Diego That afternoon, the investigation led were found at a Carpinteria deputies to a motel in the 4200 block of Via Real in Carpinteria where 48-year-old Patrick motel with 50 pounds of stolen Carty of Ventura and 30-year-old Courtney marijuana.

Wallace of San Diego were found to have drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. A further search of their possessions and vehicle yielded the stolen marijuana and marijuana plants, burglary tools and other items identified as belonging to the burglary victim’s farm.

Both Carty and Wallace were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $20,000 for violations of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, vandalism, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy.

The Thursday Farmer’s Market and Arts & Crafts fair will be re-located to the city parking lot at the Amtrak station through the month of January for the duration of a re-paving project that will affect Linden Avenue. Market days on Jan. 11, 18, 25 and Feb. 1 will be moved. Public Works has hired J&H Engineering to perform roadway maintenance work along various downtown streets, including Linden and Carpinteria avenues. Work will include removal of old pavement and replacement with new pavement, and the streets will also get a slurry seal in the final step of the project.

Downtown traffic and parking will be impacted by the project as necessary. Detour signs will be posted and updates available at Carpinteria.ca.us.

Westerlay donates $11K to fire evacuees

Westerlay Orchids orchestrated a last-minute fundraiser to help the FOOD Share, Ventura County’s Food Bank, which has been instrumental in feeding tens of thousands of people displaced by the Thomas Fire. All of the proceeds from retail orchid sales at the Carpinteria nursery from Dec. 21 to 23 went to the food bank. “We couldn’t do this without the support of generous businesses such as Westerlay,” explained Monica White, president and CEO of FOOD Share. “The need to feed our hungry neighbors is not over, nor will it end when the firefighters head back home.

Westerlay’s generous donation is a wonderful demonstration of providing hope and help to those affected by the Thomas Fire.”

Sanitary District proposes new building, tree removal

The Carpinteria Sanitary District has long operated its offices out of a modular building at 5300 6th Street but is now seeking city approval to construct a one-story, 4,118 square foot building in its place. Plans include raising the grade by five or six feet to keep the building out of the floodplain. Neighbors have decried the proposed removal of nine trees: three eucalyptus, four palms and two sycamores. The new south-facing building would be set back farther from 6th Street and incorporate solar features and rainwater harvesting. The architecture is described as mid-century modern with a low-slung flat roof. The Architectural Review Board will consider the project at its meeting on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

City moves to pause pot growing permission in valley

Says county needs better system before state issues licenses

By Peter Dugré At a special meeting on Dec. 27, the Carpinteria City Council raised its voice in the conversation about what impacts prolific cannabis cultivation will have in Carpinteria Valley. Although the city holds no decision-making role over permitting recreational cannabis cultivation outside city limits, the council voted to send a letter to state regulators asking that temporary licensing for cultivators be withheld from growers in the unincorporated areas of the valley. The council also elected to spend up to $30,000 for a consultant to evaluate impacts and mitigation measures of cannabis growth near the city as Santa Barbara County nears finalizing its local regulations for the newly legal commercial cannabis industry.

Jan. 1 marked the launch day for the legal cannabis industry in California, but since the comprehensive statewide regulatory framework remains incomplete, the state is issuing temporary licenses.

In order for cultivators, manufacturers or distributors of recreational cannabis to qualify for state licensing, applicants must show that they have local approval.

However, Santa Barbara County has not completed its local regulations, and is therefore unable to process or issue approvals for growers to pass on to the state.

Instead, the county elected to issue form letters explaining the status of its ordinance to all growers, who can file

for state licensing by sending the letters’ sworn affidavits to the state to claim compliance with county rules.

The county had put a moratorium on new cannabis operations as of January 2016, and growers who began producing cannabis after that date are out of compliance. According to Carpinteria City Manager Dave Durflinger and City Attorney Dylan Johnson at the Dec. 27 meeting, the county has no process in place for determining if the growers are in compliance under the moratorium.

In its letter to the state, the city explained its position and asked that the state not issue temporary licenses because the county has not implemented its regulations and has not determined whether cannabis cultivators are in compliance.

“We’re already experiencing impacts from operators. We don’t know if they’re legal, and the county doesn’t know if they’re legal,” Johnson said.

In the letter, which the council approved in a 4-0 vote with Mayor Fred Shaw absent, the city makes it clear that it is not opposed to the cannabis industry in the county, only that the process is not in place to guarantee compliance.

“It’s unclear how the state will treat (the letters) because the county is not saying they’re authorizing (the growers),” Johnson said.

While the City of Carpinteria has been on the outside of the county planning process, it has sent multiple letters to the

county in an attempt to influence regulations that affect the city, mainly regarding odors and security at growing facilities that closely border city limits.

Johnson said the city’s comments about potential mitigation measures were revised into the county’s final EIR was revised to include the city’s comments about potential mitigation measures.

The county has estimated that 52 growers of cannabis are located in the Carpinteria Valley, but the information was gathered through voluntary reporting by growers. No firm figures are available about the number, size or volume of cannabis cultivation in the area.

“The concern is that we’re going to inherit the concentration of the cannabis industry in the valley down here. Is that something we want?” asked Councilmember Brad Stein.

Dolores “Loli” Echeverria Reimers Hilsz 12/26/1948 – 11/22/2017

Our beautiful mother, Dolores “Loli” Echeverria Reimers Hilsz, 68, of South Lake Tahoe, entered rest on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 in Santa Barbara. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mom was born to Miguel Echeverria and Emma Goena Echeverria on Dec. 26, 1948 in Santa Barbara. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Montecito, Bishop High School in Santa Barbara and graduated from Carpinteria High School. Her sisters Silvia and Martha landed jobs at Harrah’s Casino in South Lake Tahoe, and she would later join them.

Her sisters returned to Carpinteria, but she stayed in Tahoe, where she met and married Mike Hilsz, who also worked at Harrah’s. Mom worked there for 25 years, first as a cocktail waitress, then as beverage supervisor before retiring. She loved going to estate sales or antique hunting, and had a great eye for quality. She was generous to her family, thoughtful and kind. After retiring she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. She loved to make people laugh. She was a member of the Girls Scouts and Mariners Sea Scouts.

She is survived by her two daughters, Silvia Echeverria Jackson and Denise Reimers; six sisters, Silvia Echeverria, Martha Ringor, Becky Gonzalez (Louie), Marie Koppa (John), Michelle Gottwald (Thomas) and Madeline Ruggiero; four grandchildren Kathleen Jackson, Steven Jackson (Evelyn), and Bryant and Mackenzie McClaskey; two great-grandchildren Isabella and Steven Jackson, and 13 nephews and three nieces as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the St. Joseph’s Chapel, 4691 7th St., Carpinteria, Calif. A reception will follow at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, 1059 Vallecito Road.

Sent a text message, “Snuck out early,” to my friend Sheila. “I was looking for you,” she sent back. I thought about that response on the drive home—how important it was to have a friend looking for you. Looking out for you. How our shared harrowing experience of the fire drove us all a little closer, made us want to look out for each other.

It’s a common response: Disasters of various kinds, from floods to fire, earthquakes to war, drive survivors together and stir outpourings of sympathy from others. We are capable of such stirring acts of selflessness and kindness. There are stories of firefighters entering endangered houses to remove precious artifacts and place them out of harm’s way. There are neighbors spraying down neighbors’ houses and rescuing pets. Strangers opening their homes to evacuees.

Carpinteria octogenarian Rodney Chow told me that a Santa Barbara B and B, The Secret Garden, provided him with room and board for five days at no cost.

There are stories. Lots of them. And we will tell them over and over to each other and to strangers until we can somehow put the fire’s terror and the burned-up Christmas back into the memory box.

But we will never forget, and for a while the ashy hills will be our daily reminder. We mustn’t forget, because we live in a high fire zone. We live at the mercy of weather and wind and fire.

Fires are our familiars; we can tick their names off on our fingers—Zaca, Coyote, Sycamore, Paint, Tea, Jesusita, Whittier, Thomas.

So many fires, so close, so much destruction. We take our chances sinking roots and staking our hopes in such a fireprone area. We cross our fingers, say our prayers, thank God for the heroism of firefighters, who risk everything, their lives, to save the buildings we’ve constructed in this beautiful, dangerous place.

We can’t forget. We’ve had this drill before, and we should have our bags packed and ready, our emergency rations, change of clothes, flashlights and first aid kits. We should know what to take and

what to leave, have lists of what to grab, what can stay.

We have friends who refused to leave, even when all of Summerland was under mandatory evacuation. We left early when the smoke aggravated Roger ’s asthma. The friends who stayed describe the eeriness of a town deserted—the falling ash and empty streets, air brown as bark, the silence. They seem shellshocked, gesticulating as they talk, their eyes growing wide. They want us to know what we missed, what we were lucky enough to escape.

About that party

There were lots of spur of the moment parties after the fire danger passed. Relief parties, I call them. Tidings of joy parties.

The one I left early was joyful enough, a planned celebration of Betty Popnoe’s 90th birthday. Betty is one of the reigning queens of Star Pine Road, along with 101-year-old Barbara McCurry, who was also there. Dottie Deck came over to tell me she was about to celebrate her 83rd birthday. Happy birthday all around! I do love these doughty older women. They fill me with gratitude and hope.

Gracie Disgracie strikes again

Home at last for the holidays, I made a big batch of lemon-glazed persimmon bars. Anyone who’s read previous exploits of our insatiable Jack Russell terrier Gracie, aka Gracie Disgracie, can pretty much guess the rest. The plate I made up for friends was so festive, a double layer of bars on a Christmas plate, tied up in cellophane with a big bow.

I deserve more blame than Gracie for carelessly leaving it on a table when we went out. Using a flashlight, I found the desecrated plate, bow still in place, under the fig tree. Gracie fully understands her guilt in these matters, running outside when I start to yell, where she stays until coaxed back in.

This dog is definitely not into sharing, so I doubt that Finney, the Chiweenie, got even a crumb.

I let the miscreant stew outside for quite a while, hoping she’d burn some of the 1,000 plus calories she’d consumed in that one sitting. She’s definitely lost her girlish figure––no waist at all. She looks like a loaf of white bread. When will I ever learn?

One good thing: Looking out for each other in the New Year.

A County Hazardous Materials Specialist will contact you to arrange for an inspection of your property. At that time, hazardous items will be separated and, ultimately, removed (you may utilize the County no-cost removal or hire your own contractor for this).

NOTE: This only applies to properties where buildings/structures were burned by the fire, not those that were affected by ash alone.

THE HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY AWARDS BANQUET Though the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1912, incorporated in 1934, the first annual Community Awards Banquet was held in 1958. Originally named the “Citizen of the Year” event, outstanding individuals were recognized for their community service.

The event was renamed the “Carpinteria of the Year” and later changed to the “Community Awards Banquet” and is the Chamber’s signature event of the year.

Throughout the years the celebration was held at various venues including The Palms, the Carpinteria High School Cafeteria, Carpinteria Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, Carpinteria Veterans Hall, and the Miramar Hotel in Montecito. Beginning in 1993 the Banquet was staged in a tent at the Carpinteria State Beach but inclement weather brought that to an end in 1998.

The Community Awards Banquet honors highly esteemed Community Members: Carpinterian of the Year, Large Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Ambassador of the Year, and Outstanding Educators of the Year. Merit Awards honoring volunteers from the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce, Service Clubs, and various Nonprofits are celebrated. A Jr. Carpinterian of the Year is selected from finalists and 3 scholarships are awarded to deserving students.

In recent years the event has been sold out with 330+ attendees. Serving as the Chamber’s Annual Meeting, the Chamber Board Members and Officers are introduced, and outgoing Board Members are honored for their service. A review of the previous year’s accomplishments is celebrated and the business community is recognized for their generous support and contributions.

The Community Award Banquet is the largest recognition social affair of the year and the Chamber is proud to have been the host of this event since its inception.

We encourage the public to join us for the Annual Gala at the Boy’s & Girls Club on Saturday, January 27th as we celebrate 60 years of honoring the Pillars of the Community.

On Dec. 15 at approximately 7:15 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Birch Street on a report of a man refusing to leave. A woman answered the door and allowed the deputy to enter her home, where he observed a man standing by the restroom. The man said he was going to get dressed and leave. The deputy waited at the residence until the man left. As the man was getting dressed, the woman who had called told the deputy that a week prior, when he was drunk, the man had kicked in her kitchen door even though he had a key.

The deputy followed the man downstairs and observed him walk away, then turn and make a slashing motion with the edge of his hand across his throat as he stared at the woman at the top of the stairs. “Did you see that?” the woman asked the deputy twice, and the deputy noted that she “had a look of being distraught on her face.” The deputy got in his patrol car and circled around to follow the man, then exited his vehicle and told the man to sit down on the sidewalk.

After placing the man in handcuffs, the reporting deputy stated that the man resisted his efforts to move him to the back of the patrol car, and that the man stuck his leg out of the patrol vehicle so the deputy could not close the door. The man’s movements made it impossible for the deputy to place a seatbelt on him according to the report, and the man cursed at the deputy on the way to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Because of his aggressive conduct in kicking in the kitchen door and his demeanor towards the woman, the deputy noted that he believed that she was too afraid of the man to press charges. The man “appeared to be the dominant person in the relationship,” the deputy stated, “which caused me to be concerned for (the woman)’s safety.”

The 67-year-old man, listed as “Transient” on the Sheriff’s Office arrest report, told the deputies he was cold and had pneumonia: “That’s why I started the fire,” the man reportedly said. The man who called the deputies said he had seen smoke coming from the restrooms and when he opened the restroom door he saw the man sitting on the toilet with burning toilet paper in his hands. The deputy arrested the man for arson, and stated that the paint on the bathroom floor was damaged and that there was smoke damage inside the structure. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Too little, too late

On Dec. 27 at approximately 3:30 p.m. a man at a mail-delivery store on Casitas Pass Road left his iPhone, valued at $1,000, on a counter while he went to use the restroom. Video surveillance showed a man in a blue shirt, later identified as being 40 years old, walk by the counter, pick up the other man’s phone and leave the store with it. The man seen taking the phone had dropped off a package to be sent to a residence in Carpinteria, so the reporting deputy went to the address listed on the “return” portion of the package to investigate. The deputy discovered that a woman had asked her son to send a package for her; when the son came to the door of the residence, the deputy asked him for the iPhone. The man returned to his room and brought the stolen phone out, stating that he was going to return it to the store because he felt bad for taking it. The deputy nevertheless arrested him for the theft and took him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Art auction inspires hope, benefits fire victims

Proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to Direct Relief, and in some cases, given directly to families impacted. Porch will host a celebration to open the “Seed” exhibit and silent auction on Saturday, Jan. 6 from noon to 5 p.m. The silent auction will close on Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.

The art exhibit and silent auction, “Seed,” a benefit for those impacted by the Thomas Fires, will open this Saturday, Jan. 6 at Porch on Santa Claus Lane. Over 21 local artists have donated works for auction, bringing together a wide variety of styles, media and thematics.

Porch was compelled to frame “Seed” as a benefit in response to the personal stories and experiences told by clientele as they communed in the store and gallery during the heavy days of fire and smoke. Liberty Hanson, one of the artists and exhibit coordinators, reflects that “a seed seems relatively insignificant when you see it by itself, but when you see it begin to grow, especially after a fire, it transforms into a really powerful symbol of hope. This show is our small way of helping after this devastating fire, but we are hopeful that it will serve as a reminder that there is always hope and that we all have a community of people that is willing to support us.”

Artists have selected works that personally resonate with them in the wake and context of the Thomas Fires. barbara dunlap Gail Persoon started volunteering as a UCSB student in 1957, and she hasn’t stopped since. The breadth and depth of her activities in Santa Barbara and Montecito—and now in Carpinteria—are remarkable. From helping low-income seniors find housing to serving as president of the board at Girls Inc., Persoon fills needs wherever she finds them.

Here’s a closer look at this energetic volunteer.

You’ve been actively involved with Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, serving on the board for nearly 10 years. Why does this organization resonate with you?

Girls Inc. works with the whole family, which is a concern for me. It also changes the goals of the girls. We have a program called Eureka for girls in seventh grade through high school. They spend four to six weeks at UCSB to get used to being on a college campus. They attend special classes year-round, and have internships during the summer. Everyone who’s gone through Eureka so far has gone to college.

You’ve also been involved with the Junior League of Santa Barbara for many years, and you were honored as Junior League Sustainer of the Year in 2002.

What does the league do?

Traditionally, it has been a training organization for women, helping make them efficient community volunteers who know how to get things done. It has been involved in literacy programs and helped finance the Santa Barbara Children’s Library. This year, its goal is to provide a local safe house for victims of sex trafficking. Some of the girls are as young as 12 years old.

When you lived in Montecito, you were very involved with education. What kinds of activities did you do?

Throughout my children’s school years, I was always in the PTA, and I volunteered in the classroom at Montecito Union School and Santa Barbara High School. I’m still friends with the people I knew in the PTA. I was a Montecito Union School Board trustee. Proposition 13 had cut money for art, music and other special programs, so I co-founded the Montecito Union School Foundation to finance those programs.

Also, I was president of the Santa Barbara County School Boards Association, which links the school boards in the area.

It offers school districts the chance to see what other districts are doing.

You served as president of the board of the Children’s Home Society in the tricounties. What did the organization provide, and what did you do as president?

As president, I met with the board and licked a lot of envelopes! One of the first things I did there, involved St. Vincent’s preschool for working mothers in Santa Barbara. It had been run by St. Vincent’s, which was going to close it. I convinced the board that we should undertake funding the school, and we did for many years.

For 10 years, you served on the board of the Montecito Trails Foundation. What does the foundation do, and do you still participate?

It maintains 300 miles of bicycle and walking trails in Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. For many years, up to and including this year, I’ve worked on the annual barbecue. It’s a fundraiser and also provides guided hikes and rides for walkers, bikers and horse riders.

You’re currently on the board of the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature in Solvang, and you are president of the board of Laguna Cottages for Seniors, which offers independent living for older people with limited income. What keeps you volunteering?

I think it’s because my life has been really good, and volunteering is an opportunity to give back. I love to share!

You moved to Carpinteria in 2004. What do you enjoy about this town?

I lived in Montecito for many years, and I saw a lot of change there. Carpinteria is very special because it’s still a small town. I really like shopping locally—you have conversations with the storeowners. I love what’s happening with the Carpinteria Arts Center. I know Rotary is so involved here, and the Lions Club, too. There are so many agencies that bring people together to do good things. I like the whole community in Carpinteria.

Born to play

Delgado’s game develops year-on-year

BY ALONZO OROZCO Edward “Lalo” Delgado has been part of the South Coast soccer scene for nearly all his life. “I grew up in a soccer family, so I was really driven to play soccer from a young age,” said the 19-year-old goalkeeper for Westmont College. Born in Santa Barbara and raised in Carpinteria, Delgado remembers his older brother and sister both playing, and family legend holds that his father also played at one time in Mexico. Lalo participated in AYSO and All-Stars, and joined the Allianza squad of Ojai.

At age 10, he made a bold move and began to play for the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. He hasn’t looked back since. He describes it as, “Without a doubt, the best soccer experience in my whole life.” His teams have competed in regions such as a Hawaii, Albuquerque, Maryland, Las Vegas, and North and South Carolina, collecting three national titles along the way. “Knowing that we worked so hard to get to that big stage, winning was the best,” said Delgado.

He continued his success through high school, helping Carpinteria to clinch three Tri-Valley League titles. Delgado was also named to the All-TVL Team for his play in goal twice, an honor that found him playing alongside club-mates Juan Pablo Alvarez, Francisco Arroyo, Christian Chacon, Eric Contreras and Benjie Garcia. “Those two years (2015 and 2016) are probably the best I got individually, it was really good … I got to be captain that last year,” said Delgado who was also named goalkeeper of the year in the TVL in 2015.

When it came to choosing a college, Lalo received many Division I offers, but he wanted to stay local and leaned toward Santa Barbara City College. With the help of club coach and Westmont assistant Rudy Ybarra, Delgado secured financial aid through Westmont and enrolled in the four-year college. His club teammate Augie Andrade also plays on the Montecito campus, which has helped Delgado settle comfortably into his second season.

“I had to adjust to a new setting, not coming from a Christian background and coming into one; it was at first challenging, but everything’s adaptable,” explained Delgado. As a result, Delgado was twice named the conference, the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), player of the week last season, as well as being named the All-Conference goalkeeper.

Westmont wrapped a successful 2017 season. The Warriors started out by beating UCSB, 2-1, to recapture the Bryant Cup—Westmont’s first victory over the Gauchos since 2000. The team finished 10-5-3 overall and 7-3 in conference.

Although Vanguard took League, the Warriors won the GSAC Tournament to advance to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Tournament. They ultimately fell to Marymount in Torrance, but it was still a memorable season for the Warriors. “Defensively, it was one of the best teams I’ve been a part of, and I think Westmont has had as well,” said Delgado.

Entering his junior year, Delgado hopes to continue to hone his skills and get back into shape, playing for the Ventura County Fusion squad of the Premier Developmental League this summer. In the meantime, he’ll continue to work to improve his game in a sport that is as much a part of his life as eating and breathing.

the BOOK NOOK Carpinteria Library recommends

The award-winning author, playwright, actor and musician, struggled to complete this book as he faced increasing complications from ALS, dictating passages to family members. Told in shifting voices and focused on the thoughts and perceptions of a dying narrator, the book mirrors the process that created it.

How do you navigate when everything is changing? Sitting on a porch, what do you notice? What is still there? Seasons, birdsongs and insects call up times and places, orchards, cities and borders, as the narrator faces his increasing dependence on family.

Lions bring $2K worth of food to needy

While many holiday events were canceled last month, the Lions Club continued its seven-year tradition of passing the Basket of Cheer among its members. This year’s $2,000 collection was then donated to the Food Bank of Santa Barbara. For every dollar collected, the food bank provides eight meals in the county, and local distribution sites include the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club and Catholic Charities.

The Crenshaw Six is a small gang in LA that has been drawn into a war between rival drug cartels. The Crenshaw Six appears to be led by a man named Garcia, but what no one has figured out is that the gang’s real leader is Garcia’s girlfriend, Lola. She has mastered playing the role of submissive girlfriend, and she is consistently underestimated. In truth, she is smarter—and tougher and more ruthless—than any of the men around her. As the gang is increasingly sucked into a world of high-stakes betrayal and violence, her skills and leadership become their only hope of survival.

I didn’t expect to feel any sympathy for this gang leader just because she’s a woman or had a wretched childhood, but that was another accomplishment of this dark story.
