Chefs and kitchen professionals are hard at work preparing for this Saturday’s third annual Culinary Crawl. The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s foodie-fundraiser will feature 16 local restaurants and breweries, each serving up a signature small bite.

Avofest honors Carpinteria avocado matriarch Betty Brown

Few people in Carpinteria know its avocado history like Betty Brown, who was one of the first people in the valley to grow avocados on her ranch in the early ‘60s. This year, Brown will serve as the honorary chair of the California Avocado Festival.

Betty May Brown was born in Oklahoma and raised in Kansas. She moved to Carpinteria 68 years ago shortly after marrying Ralph Brown, who passed away in 2006. The couple had grown up not five miles apart in Kansas and married when Betty was 18. “I don’t remember when I didn’t know him,” said Betty. They had three children, and later, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, almost all of whom still live in the area.

The Browns moved to Carpinteria in 1951 to help Ralph’s family with the local business, The Pine Haven Motel and Café (formerly located in the parking lot across from the Alazar Theatre before it was torn down). Ralph had just finished a three-year tour with the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific. His extended family had been early settlers of the Carpinteria Valley and owned several businesses and properties. They called on him and his new wife to come out and help. Ralph’s grandfather, Henry Barrion Fish—of Henry Fish Seed Co.—had first stepped foot in Carpinteria in 1868 and was one of the leading packers of lima beans and other seeds by the time Betty moved to town.

“Back then, they were growing tomatoes, English walnuts and lemons,” said Betty, “Then came the avocados. We were probably not the first to grow avocados, but Ralph’s brothers probably had some of

the first.” Today, the 50-acre Brown Ranch is found on Rincon Road. Betty’s son, Mac Brown, has 120 acres of avocados on his family’s Wiggie Ranch.

Before becoming an avocado rancher, Betty attended East Central University in Oklahoma for a short time. But when

WWII broke out, she returned home to Kansas to help her family. “I didn’t get to go to college for very long,” she recalled.

After moving to Carpinteria, she became a tireless advocate for children’s education and welfare. She volunteered and fundraised extensively for the Children’s Home Society, Rainbow Girls and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. She’s credited, along with her husband, with spearheading the $2.46 million capital campaign for Girls Inc. to build the 16,000-square-foot farmstyle campus on Foothill Road, which tripled Girls Inc.’s programming capacity.

Betty is also active in the Rotary Club, Carpinteria Women in Agriculture, Carpinteria Republican Women and the American Heart Association. In 1998, she was honored as Carpinterian of the Year in recognition of her service to the community.

Does Betty Brown like avocados? “I certainly do,” she said, “I eat one a day.

Just a plain old avocado. I don’t have to have anything else with it… maybe salt and pepper.”

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria will host “An Evening in Bloom” on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Girls Inc. campus, 5315 Foothill Road in Carpinteria.

This year’s Polynesian-themed gala will honor the late Ann Garcelon for investing in the future of local girls through Girls Inc.’s Legacy Society.

A successful journalist, Garcelon was invited to a Girls Inc. luncheon several years ago and was moved by the young women and girls who spoke passionately about their experience with the organization.

While her health made it difficult for her to volunteer or become more involved with the nonprofit, she found another way to make a difference and leave a lasting impact.

Garcelon passed away on June 5, 2018 and left a generous bequest from her estate to Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

“We are grateful to Ann for her dedication to supporting local girls in the Carpinteria Valley and Ventura County, ensuring that they have the skills and confidence to reach their greatest potential,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria.

“While last year’s gala celebrated 25 years of providing lifechanging programming at our Foothill campus, this year we invite the community to join us as we look ahead to the future, and raise funds to benefit strong, smart and bold girls of tomorrow.”

An Evening in Bloom will feature a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres hour, plated dinner catered by The Food Liaison, hosted bar, silent and live auctions, entertainment and dancing.

This year’s event co-chairs are Stefanie Herrington and Ed Van Wingerden. Title sponsors include Mike Palmer, CARP Growers, Ever-Bloom and Kaisa and Barry Brand.

Avofest, reflections on gun violence

California Avocado Festival, scheduled for the first weekend in October, is a cherished Carpinteria tradition. Locals and tens of thousands of visitors gather to celebrate Carpinteria and its favorite fruit. It’s our time to shine.

I’m not alone thinking that something is different now. Walmarts, churches, bars and, yes, festivals have become targets of domestic terrorism. The young white men who typically commit these vile acts use guns to slaughter defenseless people.

Last year, 40,000 Americans died from gun violence.

This reality is tremendously difficult to comprehend, to cope with. We must act to make our public spaces and favorite places more secure and peaceful.

Coalition Against Gun Violence, a local nonprofit founded by Carpinteria’s Toni Wellen, has operated for the past 25 years to enact change. CAGV has pressured lawmakers to pass laws—banning the Saturday Night Special and implementing the Gun Violence Restraining Order Act in California. Every year, the organization hosts a gun buyback to remove firearms from homes and the streets.

CAGV will host a luncheon in Santa Barbara on Sept. 29, and it’s a great way to get involved and support an organization that is more important than ever.

This isn’t to say, be scared, or stay home from Avofest. It’s to say, do something. Let’s enjoy this year’s Avofest, but let’s not pretend that the issue of gun violence in America is not a horrible epidemic. We can do something about it.

Gun violence impacts all of us. We can say in solidarity with unequivocal conviction that gun laws need to be changed, not just as a means to reduce the quantity of guns in households and on the streets, but as a tool to change attitudes toward weapons, violence and all the ugliness they unnecessarily contribute to our society.

School Board member questions cannabis donations

As a Carpinteria Unified School District board member, I have seen many donations to the district. Two donations, however, involved cannabis profits and I did not approve of either as a private citizen—nor did I vote for them as a board member. Both have been written about in the Coastal View News.

“Cannabis money…” (CVN, Jan. 17, 2019): “After significant discussion, the board voted unanimously to amend the previous agenda, acknowledging a $1,200 donation from the CARP Growers...”

While this donation was presented to the board as a gift to CUSD from the Carpinteria Rotary Club, the board knew that it was a gift from CARP Growers, an association of cannabis growers.

2)“Cannabis growers pledge…” (Sept.

5, 2019): CVN reported on a $189,000 donation from CARP Growers.

This is potentially a violation of the board’s charter, as well as state and federal rules governing drugs. Marijuana is a drug, and basic common sense tells me that drugs and children are a bad mix.

Accepting these donations shows disturbing and unethical behavior on the part of district leadership.

As the sole Hispanic on the board for a district with a student population over 75 percent Hispanic, I find this especially concerning.

Support cannabis donations to schools

It has come to my attention the Carpinteria Unified School District has accepted a significant donation from CARP Growers for the benefit of funding a counselor at Carpinteria Middle School. I support this decision 100 percent.

This decision, to allow a very generous donation from Carp Growers to go toward helping our local youth, is exceptional. But, there’s an archaic mode of thinking for a lot of individuals opposed to cannabis in our town, and I’m sure some are against this donation.

Cannabis is legal in California, so local growers should be able to carry out their business freely. Of course, there should be strict regulations for these practices, and businesses or individuals that are non-compliant should not be allowed to operate.

There’s a lot of old fashion thinking going on though. A lot of dissenters have been brought up with the idea of thinking that cannabis is an evil drug in the same mold as cocaine and heroin. The whole “Reefer Madness” generation should perhaps step back a bit and let new and fresh modes of thinking dictate how we can help our community.

We have an unprecedented opportunity to do something amazing in our town. Carpinteria can set the bar in pushing forward a blueprint for how cannabis can help a community. The schools have needs and there is not enough money to fulfill those needs.

I think CUSD and the school board stuck their necks out big time in accepting this donation, and I applaud them for that. I wholeheartedly support CUSD and the school board for allowing this donation. I believe their responsibility in maintaining our children’s physical and mental well-being is their overall priority.

Cannabis donation breaks district policy

As a former teacher, I was appalled to see the picture of Superintendent Rigby and school principals (except Gerardo Cornejo) having their picture taken with the Glass House logo. School leaders must not be used as publicity for the can-

nabis growers.

The superintendent and principals are supposed to be models for our students and teachers. What were they thinking when they appeared in this picture promoting this product? CUSD has a policy that clearly states that there should not be any endorsement of any business or product or unduly commercialize or politicize the school environment.

The acceptance of the $189,000 is also against the CUSD District Policy #3 of 5131.6 stating that “the Board shall ensure that acceptance of the gift, grant or bequest does not: Promote the use of violence, drugs, tobacco, or alcohol or the violation of any law or district policy…

While greatly appreciating suitable donations, the Board shall reject any gift which may directly or indirectly impair its authority to make decisions in the best interest of district students.”

The city of Carpinteria in June sent a Resolution to the Board of Supervisors requesting the county to reconsider increasing buffers for sensitive receptors from the current 600-750 to 1,000 feet. The County Planning Department is looking into possible changes. In the past, the superintendent has written both county agencies recommending a buffer of 1,000 feet using the property line to property line measurement. Currently there are five cultivation sites close to the high school that are probably less than 1,000 feet distance.

I understand the need for a counselor at the middle school but this must not be done at the expense of a clear violation of CUSD’s Board Policy. This vote needs to be rescinded. Nonprofits accepting money from cannabis puts any federal funding in jeopardy.

Cannabis farms positively contribute to community

I saw last week in Coastal View News that local cannabis farmers are giving $189,000 to our school district to provide mental health support at Carpinteria Middle School (“Cannabis growers pledge…,” Vol. 25, No. 50). That is $189,000 that our schools didn’t have before.

Education seems to be an afterthought when it comes to funding, and our schools seem to go through never-ending budget cuts. Public schools are always strapped for cash and shedding personnel. I would like to give a personal thank you to CARP Growers for a willingness to pitch in. Of

course, cannabis farming has been an issue of debate locally. I think what we are seeing is that local farmers took a risk to farm a crop that carries with it a century-old stigma but provides a great opportunity for local business. The school district decided that taking money that carries some political baggage is worth it for the schools and students. Really though, if cannabis is grown locally, then cannabis money is already supporting our schools through property taxes paid by the farms.

Hundreds of students in our schools have parents who work on cannabis farms and make more money than they did in other ag jobs. It would be a double standard to think that it’s OK for a liquor store to be across from the middle school, but somehow find it taboo for cannabis farming to be allowed locally, in the same places where flowers have grown for generations.

Reject cannabis money in schools

We are a coalition of individuals and groups in Santa Barbara County. We’re focused on the Carpinteria area because of the proliferation of marijuana cultivation in close proximity to schools and residences. We urge reconsideration of your decision to accept $189,000 from marijuana growers. We object to the decision and use of public funds for your administrators to visit a marijuana cultivation facility.

We were shocked by the photo of your superintendent and principals posing in a marijuana cultivation factory—smiling and wearing growers’ hats. We expect our school principals to behave as leaders and set an example for children and community.

School policies include BP 5131.6, “The Governing Board believes that the use of alcohol or other drugs adversely affects a student’s ability to achieve academic success, is physically and emotionally harmful, and has serious social and legal consequences,” and BP 3290, “Before accepting (a gift or grant) … ensure… (it) does not: Promote the use of ... drugs, tobacco or alcohol or the violation of any law or district policy. Imply endorsement of any business or product or unduly commercialize or politicize the school environment.”

The school’s actions contradict those policies. “Greenwashing” describes oil companies donating money to “clean energy” efforts to change their image and obscure the fact that they created the problem. The current situation is greenwashing by the cannabis industry.

We agree school counselors are valuable and we note that you received revenue of over $29 million for 2019. We urge you to find a way to fund such a position.

Marijuana growers are, of course, free to donate as individuals to any nonprofit organization.

The school board needs to reconsider their vote and decline to accept the money from CARP Growers to salvage some credibility for the board and district.

Susan Richards Byxbee 1/11/1949 – 8/29/2019

Susan Richards Byxbee, 70, of Carpinteria, passed away on Aug. 29, 2019, at the Serenity House hospice in Santa Barbara.

She was the daughter of the late Morris F. Byxbee, Jr. and the late Norma B. Nichols.

She was born in Ithaca, New York on Jan. 11, 1949. She spent her childhood in Norwalk, Connecticut and graduated from Brien McMahon High School in 1967 and then Rider College in 1969. She worked for several computer software companies and retired from IBM. Susan lived in Germany and Amsterdam, traveled to England, Australia and throughout the U.S., but Hawaii was her place of choice. She loved to knit and enjoyed her weekly meetings with her knitting group of friends. Always by her side were her two cats Leilani and Smokey that have been lovingly adopted by her friends James, Laura and Lulu.

Susan is survived by her sister Ellen B. Wood of Danbury, Connecticut, her brother Gregg Byxbee of New Port Richey, Florida, her nephew Kevin Wood and nieces Shannon Wood and Melissa Wood.

She leaves behind one grandnephew, Riley Linnell. She was predeceased by her nephew Christopher Wood. Susan will be lovingly remembered by numerous cousins and friends.

There will be no calling hours. Susan’s ashes will be scattered at sea in Hawaii at the same location she scattered her mother’s ashes six years ago. At the request of the family, donations to honor Susan’s memory should be made to your local hospice, cancer treatment center or animal rescue service.

Regina B. Colson 2/14/1930 – 7/19/2019

Regina B. Colson, 89, passed away on July 19, 2019, at Serenity House in Santa Barbara. She was born in Bangor, Maine, on Feb. 14, 1930.

Regina worked as a waitress at the Breakwater Restaurant in Santa Barbara for many years. On Dec. 21, 1980, she married Frank L. Colson, Sr. She is survived by her son, James High (Jeanne), stepsons, James Colson (Mary Ann), Frank Colson (Shannon), and stepdaughter, Clare Westfall (Robert) of Carpinteria. Regina has eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank L. Colson, Sr. and stepson, Thomas Colson (Gwyn).

A Memorial Service will be held on Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., at the Carpinteria Cemetery.

Lois C. Hamilton 1943 – 2019

Lois was born in New Mexico, daughter of Adam Zalonka, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, and mother Eula, who was a stay at home mom with her three kids. Eula eventually became a real estate broker. They moved around a lot as a military family. They lived in Japan for several years.

Lois went to Victorville High School where she excelled in writing and speech competitions and was a cheerleader for the basketball team—which James Mearig, her eventual husband, played on. Lois and James married at 19 years old and were married for 23 years.

They moved to Santa Barbara in 1964 with baby in tow. Lois was a real estate agent and managed Century 21. She then moved to Coldwell Banker where she was a real estate broker and vice president of the company. Lois was an incredible artist, loved music and adored her grandkids. She remarried Dr. Van Hamilton and they were married for 31 years, until his passing last year.

Lois was highly respected in the community for her activism work after retirement. She was very generous where she saw a need, especially with animal causes, human rights and the environment. Lois had a heart of gold and was the warmest, loving, giving person. Lois would do anything for anybody. She was a total sweetheart.

Lois is survived by her only child, daughter Kim Mearig, and her husband, Brian Gruetzmacher, and their kids, Justin Gruetzmacher and Kaitlyn Richards, and her husband Tanner Richards. She is also survived by her younger sister and two nieces.

Lois’ ashes will be spread at sea in an intimate celebration of her life on the family boat with the immediate family.

Grace Margaret (Kari) Young 4/2/1920 – 8/30/2019

Grace Margaret (Kari) Young passed away peacefully at her home on Aug. 30, 2019. Grace was born on April 2, 1920, in Utah.

She graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1937. She was president of the Girls League and was chosen as an Ephebian (Honor Society). She married her high school sweetheart, Oliver W. Young on Aug. 17, 1941, in Van Nuys.

They celebrated 62 years of great happiness before Grace would loose the love of her life on Nov. 5, 2003.

Grace and Ollie lived in the San Fernando Valley prior to moving to their beach home on Padaro Lane in 1968.

Grace loved children and volunteered at the Children’s Home Society, Los Chiquitos, and the PTAs of Aliso School and Carpinteria High School. She was active in the FFA program and raised money for the high school farm. The show ring at Carpinteria High School and scholarships were named after Ollie and Grace.

She is survived by her son, Bill Young; her daughter, Kari Young Jimenez and son-in-law, Michael Jimenez; granddaughters Jenna Grace Young, Mollie Katherine Ruble and Kelly Suzanne Ruble Saragoza and her husband Julian Saragoza. She has seven great-grandchildren: Karissa Vasquez, Tariah Grace Richardson, Rodolfo Aldana III, Bryce Oliver Young Burt, Madison Makenleigh Mertes, Jacob Aiden Garcia and Brenna Monroe Robertson; nephews: Frank (Barbara) Macari, John (Meryl) Kari, Bob (Cheryl) Kari and Ron (Leah) Kari; nieces, Dana (Christian) Luedthe and Leslie Kari; and extended family members, Nancy and Pete Soto and Miho Keil.

Our special thanks and gratitude to Maria Rodriquez, Barbara Pell, Carmen Yuhaz and Visiting Nurses and Hospice.

Grace was an inspiration to many and was appreciative of her many friends and family.

John passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on July 30, 2019. He now joins his beloved wife Dorothy, who passed away 3 ½ months earlier on April 14, 2019. They were happily married for 67 years and are now together again forever.

John and Dorothy met in Chicago, Illinois, where they were both born and raised. Shortly after John left the Armed Forces with an honorable discharge after World War II, he met Dorothy, and they were married in 1952 at Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago.

Fed up with the cold snowy winters, they decided to move to Southern California with their children and they eventually settled in Burbank. John worked as a food broker for over 30 years, working his way up the ladder to become Vice President of Pasarow Food Services.

Dorothy worked part-time at several companies as a secretary and raised their three beloved children, John Michael, Geraldine and Thomas. They enjoyed coming to Carpinteria every year for vacations with family and friends, staying at La Cabana apartments on the beach and eventually purchasing their own property.

When they retired, they enjoyed traveling and seeing the world, especially Italy where John’s parents were born.

Later, they settled in Sun City, Las Vegas, where they enjoyed the heat, pool and entertainment. In 2012, they moved back to Carpinteria where they loved having breakfast at Jack’s Bagels and meals at Sly’s with family and friends.

They are survived by their children, John Michael, Geraldine and Thomas, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

We love you “Nana” and “Papa.”

A Memorial Service for John Frontera will be held at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. with a Celebration of Life following.

Cannabis school donation, not a good example

John Raymond Frontado 10/1/1932 – 9/10/2019

John Raymond Frontado was born on Oct. 1, 1932, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to Juanita and Leandro. In 1945, the family came to the United States on a merchant ship, settling in Queens, New York.

There, he attended Long Island City High School, learned English and prepared to enter the Navy in 1951. While on leave as an Aviation Ordnanceman in the Korean War, he returned home and met the love of his life, Christine Scott, in 1954. Following an honorable discharge in 1955, John and Christine married on Feb. 1, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York. As a honeymoon gift, they set off for California the next day with plans to only visit the Golden State but ended up loving it here so much they never returned to the east coast.

The newlyweds quickly found an apartment in Hermosa Beach and jobs at North American Aviation. John, the oldest of seven children, who was a natural born leader with a keen intellect, always had his sights set on law enforcement.

He was recruited by the Hermosa Beach Police Department in 1957, where he worked for seven years before moving to the Torrance Police Department in 1964.

In 1967, John was offered the opportunity to help build Carpinteria’s first City Police Department. He encouraged best friend Kevin Eliason, who was also serving on the Torrance PD to join him in that venture. Following recruitment of five more officers, Carpinteria soon formed their first police force—known to all as the “Magnificent Seven,” led by Police Chief John Carpenter. Following Carpenter’s promotion to Sheriff of Santa Barbara, John was promoted to Chief of Police in 1970 where he proudly led the department for 17 years. Many still fondly remember the warm smiles and friendly waves from our city’s police officers as they patrolled our community. They were always at the ready to help and support the citizens of our town and Carpinterians felt a deep closeness and respect for each and every member of the department. In 1987, John retired at age 55. He spent much of his time camping, fishing, golfing, playing with grandchildren and donating his time as a Lions Club and Elks Club member and volunteering at the Therapeutic Riding Academy.

John will always be respected as one of Carpinteria’s cherished leaders. His steadfast commitment to our community will forever be remembered and our community will be forever grateful.

John is survived by his wife, Christine Frontado; children, Jacqueline Moran (Augie), Greg Frontado (Tina Fanucchi) and Deanna Waller; grandchildren, Jacob Frontado, Ian Moran, Ryann Reynolds, Amanda Moran, Cameron Reynolds, Zachary Frontado and Braeden McDonald; great-granddaughter, Jeanette Christine; and siblings, Maria, Rose, Frankie and Ida, along with many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his niece, Teri Petruccelli, and brothers, Roy and Joey Frontado.

We are eternally grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at GranVida, Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care and Compassionate Care of Carpinteria (Hospice of Santa Barbara).

Thank you to all our friends who have helped us along this journey, our hearts are filled with comfort and gratitude.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care or Hospice of Santa Barbara.

Services are being planned and the family will share that information once confirmed.

I am a retired schoolteacher and mother of five children. I understand the importance of providing a solid foundation and safe and secure environments for children. Educators play an especially important role in children’s lives and must be consistent at setting a good example. I am writing to express my grave concerns with the school district accepting $189,000 in funds from cannabis industry growers to, of all things, fund a full-time school counselor. I find it disheartening and undignified. What kind of an example are administrators setting for teachers, parents, students and residents of the school district?

Elected and hired educational leaders sign a contract to uphold the office and responsibilities the position mandates. I suggest these leaders review their contracts, policies and procedures before they find themselves unemployed and/or in court. I strongly encourage the school board to reverse their decision to accept $189,000 in funds from cannabis industry growers, specifically, the $189,000 from CARP Growers. Everyone makes mistakes.

We expect elected board officials and “leaders” to retract their decision, immediately. They must represent the best interests of and set an example for not only the children but also teachers, parents and residents. How could they possibly think it would be wise to take what amounts to a field trip to a pot farm, and publicly pose as smiling proponents for cannabis industry operators? How could this be interpreted as setting a good example? If they had been paying heed to the level of distress this industry is creating within the region (and other regions of our county), they would know that the majority of Carpinterians would not approve of these actions. Their voices/ votes will reflect this.

Carpinteria does not need another hotel, plain and simple. Carpinteria already boasts a plethora of accommodations. We have Motel 6 North, Motel 6 South, Best Western Plus Carpinteria Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Casa Del Sol Motel, Sandyland Reef Inn, Carpinteria Beach Cottages and the proposed new Marriott hotel on Via Real. In addition, there are numerous vacation rentals by owner and AirB&Bs. Carpinteria is also home to one of the most popular and reserved state park campgrounds in California. Not far to the north, Summerland, Montecito and especially Santa Barbara have hundreds of motels, hotels and vacation rentals. To the south, we have the Sea Cliff Inn at La Conchita and all of Ventura County full of tourist accommodations.

Carpinteria is already brimming with tourists year-round. Summertime is bordering on obnoxious trying to maneuver around town. Locals should not be forced to take the back seat to tourists. To think that visitors to the proposed “Railroad Hotel” will ride the train is unrealistic.

Reality dictates that people will drive their cars instead, adding to our already congested traffic and parking problems.

The “Railroad Hotel” plan and location are inconsistent with the city’s own general plan: “Preserve broad, unobstructed views from the nearest public street to the ocean, including but not limited to Linden Avenue, Bailard Avenue, Carpinteria Avenue and U.S. Highway 101. Require new development or redevelopment in the downtown section of Carpinteria to conform with the scale and character of the existing community and consistent with the city’s theme of a small beachoriented community.”

Let’s say “NO!” to the proposed Railroad Hotel and keep Carp Carp.

COASTAL BUREAU OPERATIONS SEPTEMBER 1 – 7

Sunday, Sept. 1,

11:40 a.m. / Public Intoxication / 7th Street and Linden Avenue

Deputies responded to check the welfare of a man and found him to be intoxicated to the point he could not care for himself. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

7:55 p.m. / DUI and Traffic Collision / 7th Street

Deputies were sent to a traffic collision.

A 24-year-old Ventura resident was driving impaired and collided with another vehicle. There were no injuries to either party. The woman blew a .24 percent on the breathalyzer. She was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Monday, Sept. 2

12:55 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / Via Real

On Aug. 20, a deputy took a report involving a man accused of misusing his parents’ debit card. The man had also violated a restraining order. The deputy was following-up on this case in an attempt to locate the man. He found the man’s vehicle, and it appeared to have been vandalized.

As the deputy was leaving a note on the car, a vehicle passed by and he recognized the passenger as the man he was looking for. The deputy had the vehicle stop and then asked the man if the vandalized vehicle was his. The man didn’t want anything done about his damaged car, and the deputy then asked the man about the misuse of the debit card and the violation of the restraining order, but he did not want to give a statement.

A records check showed the man had a warrant for his arrest. He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail, and the additional charges were added.

5:25 p.m. / Stalking and Annoying Phone Calls / Birch Street

A woman called to report that her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child is harassing her with phone calls and texts—up to 100 a day. She also feels he is stalking her. She asked for a report and information on obtaining a restraining order.

8:18 p.m. / Public Intoxication / Via Real

A 19-year-old Carpinteria resident was detained after it was reported he was involved in a road-rage incident. It was determined he was unable to care for his own safety due to his heavy intoxication.

The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Tuesday, Sept. 3

2:06 p.m. / Battery / 3600 block Via Real

A man called and said he had just been battered by another man on the job. Both men had been working on an irrigation project when the caller tried to give his co-worker some constructive criticism.

The man didn’t like it and both began to argue. At one point, the man receiving the instruction became physical and struck the caller in the face, leaving two scratches on his nose. The man was cited and released.

6:01 p.m. / Hit and Run / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

A caller stated that while she was shopping, an unknown car hit her car, scratching its bumper. The scratches could have been caused by a shopping cart. She requested a report.

11:23 p.m. / Suspicious Circumstances / Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies were called to assist fire and medics. An intoxicated transient individual stated two Hispanic males, in all black clothing, shouting “1/13” hit him on the head with a mag-light. The males then left on skateboards. His story did not seem credible; his bike looked as if it had just been crashed.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

10:52 a.m. / Felon in Possession of Ammo / 5th Street at Linden Avenue

Deputies were dispatched to the Amtrak station on a report of a subject attempting to break into a car. A reporting party told deputies that the suspect was sitting in his unlocked car. The man told deputies that he purchased the vehicle from an unknown male for $300 cash. A deputy found several items that may have been stolen in the man’s possession. The man also had ammunition in his pocket and was arrested for being a felon in possession of ammunition. He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, Sept. 5

9:07 a.m. / Burglary and Trespassing / Lookout Park Road

A 34-year-old transient man from Oregon broke into a residence by removing metal window security bars from a second-story window and smashing the glass. Once inside the man ate food, showered, stole clothes and some keys.

The man was still in the residence when deputies arrived. He admitted to breaking into the residence because God told him it was “end times” and he should “seek refuge.” He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:36 p.m. / Non-Injury Traffic Collision / Via Real and Cramer Circle

A driver overcorrected while driving eastbound on Via Real and collided with an MTD bus parking at the bus stop at Cramer Circle. No injuries occurred during this collision. The bus suffered damage to its driver’s side rear quarter panel.

It was driven away by MTD personnel.

The passenger car suffered major damage to its front end. It was towed away.

3:19 p.m. / Vehicle vs. Pedestrian / Casitas Pass Road

A 92-year-old woman was walking on the street in the direction of Shepard Place Apartments. She was not using the sidewalk. A car turning left from the parking lot did not see her in the street and struck her. She fell to the ground, hitting her head. She refused to go to the hospital.

There was a heated argument between residents. The argument was over a male driving too fast down the street and almost hitting one of the reporting party’s sisters. All parties involved wanted to press various charges. The report will be submitted to the DA for review.

Deputies were dispatched to a motel for an agency assist regarding an injured male. The front desk clerk said a male came into the office holding a bloody towel on his head. The male said he fell and hit his head and had a six-inch laceration on the back of his head. Deputies checked his motel room and found evidence which supported what the male said. The male was transported by ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Briefly Northbound Linden on-ramp closed this week

The northbound on-ramp at Linden Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this week. The closure will allow Linden and Casitas Pass Project crews to clear materials in preparation for the new Via Real connection and work on the new on-ramp.

Albertsons helps raise funds for Foodbank

During the month of September, shoppers can donate at the check stand to end hunger in Santa Barbara County. The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County has been selected as a charity partner for the Albertsons and Vons Foundation’s annual Hunger Is campaign to eradicate child hunger. The campaign encourages shoppers to donate at the register while checking out at Albertsons and Vons stores, and then distributes the proceeds to local food banks.

All donations made between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 at Carpinteria Albertsons will benefit the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, where they will improve child nutrition programs and sustain distributions of fresh produce and healthy food to families.

Currently, the Foodbank distributes 10 million pounds of food annually, half of which is fresh produce, to over 190,000 county residents. Forty percent of those helped by the Foodbank are children.

Master gardeners class registration deadline

The Master Gardeners of Santa Barbara County’s “Victory Vegetable Gardening for True Beginners” four-class series will run at the Carpinteria Community Garden, 4855 5th St., on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28, and Oct. 12 and 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is a materials fee of $35, and pre-registration is required by Sunday, Sept.

Under the Friday night lights, Warrior band members past and present wow the fans.

Warrior band members reunite on field

On Friday, Sept. 6, alumni-members of the Carpinteria High School Warrior Band returned to campus to perform their 20th alumni halftime show. First performing in September of 2000 to help with fundraising efforts for a new stadium, the band alums raised over $3,000 and are listed on the Wall of Fame near the entrance to the stadium.

What was originally intended to be a one-time event has become an annual tradition, with alumni being joined by current members of the Warrior Marching Band each year since their first performance. A number of current band members have said they look forward to returning after they graduate.

To mark the occasion of their 20th show, the alumni band decided to play music that was popular when they were in high school: “Mambo No. 5,” “Smooth,” “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “Sir Duke.” The show is written and directed by Langdon Nevens, who taught band in Carpinteria from 1968-2005.

Alumni band members do a practice performance after school on game day until around 5:30 p.m., then treat everybody to a pizza dinner before it’s time to line up and march to the stadium. Alumni convene after the game at the home of a local member for an enjoyable time catching up and sharing memories of their time in the band.

During the show, Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club members pass the hat (using real marching band hats) to collect money in support of music programs in Carpinteria schools. They collected over $400 on Sept. 6, which will be given to Band Forever—a charitable foundation created to support local school music programs.

Over the years, participants have ranged from recent graduates to those who graduated over 60 years ago. Some alumni members travel thousands of miles to participate each year, and any prior member of the Warrior Band is welcome to take part. The show is planned for the second home game each year. Sea glass expert solves mysteries of the hunt

Q&A with Mary McCarthy, featured speaker at SB Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival CVN REPORT The sea glass hunting obsession comes with its fair share of mystery. How old is this smoothed gem? Why do marbles wash up on the shore? Sea glass expert Mary McCarthy will bring her deep knowledge and her phenomenal collection of coastal treasures to the fifth annual Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival on Sept. 14 and 15 to answer these questions and many more.

For McCarthy, beachcombing is both passion and profession. The Chesapeake Bay resident has logged thousands of hours scouring the tideline and researching her finds. She is also an author, reiki master and journalist. Her new children’s book with Kirsti Scott called “I SEA, A Beachcombing Treasure Hunt” benefits ocean conservation.

McCarthy is secretary on the Board of Directors of the North American Sea Glass Association, where she is also education chair, and is executive director of The Sea Glass Center educational nonprofit organization.

For the fourth consecutive year, McCarthy will travel across the country to be a featured speaker and judge at the sea glass festival. On Saturday, Sept.

14, at 10:30 a.m., she will present on sea glass festival winners from contests she has judged around the country. Then on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m., she’ll present on how to determine how old sea glass is.

Also, she is the head judge in the festival’s Treasure Contest, and she’ll be on hand both days to identify attendees’ personal sea glass and to offer “fill a jar for $10” at her beachcombing table.

Below, McCarthy answers a few questions from the world of seaside treasure hunting.

CVN: When you meet people who aren’t familiar with sea glass, how do you describe what it is and why it matters to you?

MARY McCARTHY: When we pick up sea glass we aren’t just picking up a piece of broken glass, we are picking up a piece of history. It could be part of a bottle from a pirate shipwreck or a children’s plate from a seaside Victorian home. Each piece tells a story. I like the stories.

CVN: When and how did the beachcombing bug bite you?

McCARTHY: In 2001, my family moved to the Chesapeake Bay coastal region, and I took my kids to the beach. I found a perfectly frosted orange cateye marble.

I wondered what it was doing on the beach, how it got there. I soon learned

wave action in the particular body of water. California cliffs will finish a piece of glass in a few years versus gentle rolling waves where a river meets the ocean in another part of the world. Other factors affect the finish on the glass as well, like the pH level of the water. Glass finds can be dated by their color and certain identifying marks on their shape, lettering, thickness and other clues.

CVN: Santa Barbarians love the sea and its collectibles. How do the treasures on our shores differ from those found near your Chesapeake Bay home?

McCARTHY: Your glass is smaller and smoother because it›s been beaten down by the ocean. Our glass is bigger because it›s in a bay, but we have a higher likelihood (those of us who know where to look for it) of finding whole bottles, for example, or pieces with lettering, because the waves haven›t smashed the pieces down.

CVN: As people become more sensitive to the ocean environment, has sea glass become rarer?

CVN: Describe a favorite moment in your sea glass hunting experience.

McCARTHY: Finding the intaglio and learning later that it was a cut gemstone of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, was really exciting. But in terms of a full-circle moment, I recently found a personalized metal token from 1940 that was made at a beach resort. I was able to locate and return it to an 81-year old area woman, so she could gift it to her great-granddaughter and keep it in her family.

CVN: Trash or treasure? When does the first become the second?

McCARTHY: I have a hashtag I use on Instagram, #trashbeforetreasure because I›m very involved in beach cleanups. As beachcombers we are in a great (literal) position to keep the coastline free of debris on behalf of sea life. In terms of what treasure is, that’s in the eye of the beholder. We all treasure things differ-

ently, and no one can or should make that determination for someone else.

CVN: Green, white and brown sea glass are most common. Why? McCARTHY: Because those are the most common and least expensive colors in glass manufacture. Rare colors like red require additives (like gold!), so they are produced much less frequently.

CVN: Beachcombers find value in different items for different reasons, but generally what colors and shapes of sea glass are most highly prized and why?

McCARTHY: In terms of color, orange is most rare, red and turquoise and teal and lavender are all highly prized. I think it isn’t as much shape as the level of finish on the glass that is prized. In general, the more wave-worn, the more valuable in the sea glass world.

CVN: How long does it take the ocean to smooth an edge of glass? Is there any way to date sea glass?

McCARTHY: The amount of time it takes for sea glass patina (generally referred to as “frost”) to develop depends on the

Believe what you will about rising tides, but the beaches are disappearing, period.

In the last 10 to 20 years, exponentially more people started hunting for sea glass.

There is less of it because of the demand to find it. We should treasure what we have. A third reason is that we switched to using plastic instead of glass, though that seems to be changing.

CVN: What makes a gathering of coastal collectors like Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival so special?

McCARTHY: Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival isn’t just a sea glass show, it’s a family. This team comes together throughout the year to bring these incredibly talented artisans together and create the best experience possible for the great folks who visit the showgrounds, and they do it with smiles on their faces the entire time.

Following the plastic stream: What can we recycle?

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER Recycling and plastics was not always a hot topic in the news. For years, the people who followed the market-driven recycling stream were primarily managers of recycling programs, commodities brokers who worked in the recycling markets, waste haulers and anyone else with a financial stake in the game.

That changed a few years ago when news broke of the “green fence” that China had put in place, stalling the market for certain materials with increasingly stringent requirements related to what they would accept from countries around the world who had come to rely on the factories that bought our waste stream.

Up until the mid-2010s, most of what we tossed in our recycling bins went to China. We had (mostly unknowingly) become victims of the out-of-sight, outof-mind way of thinking about our waste stream. Once it went into the recycling, most people automatically assumed that it was being recycled.

But recycling can be challenging. Certain materials can be reused an infinite amount of times, but that list is very short. Aluminum cans are about the only things we use in our daily lives that can be turned back into aluminum cans forever; most of what we recycle ends up getting downcycled, meaning turned into a lesser quality product. This is particularly true for plastics. Plastics are not all the same, which makes them more difficult to be broken down and turned back into a high-quality material. Added dyes also make that process harder, and often your plastic yogurt container might end up as

some type of plastic wrap or plastic bag, collectively called film plastics, but not much else.

That leads us to today. Most people have by now heard about the closure of the RePlanet facility that was located behind the Casitas Pass shopping center.

When the largest buy-back recycling company in the state shuts down, it makes headlines. The company faced financial struggles and was no longer able to turn a profit, and while they were the only buy-back center in Carpinteria, they were not the only one in the greater Santa Barbara-Ventura region. And local stores are actively working to address that problem Recent headlines have had multiple people asking me if it is true that nothing is recyclable anymore. Our recycling industry is changing, but many items are still recyclable. Are some things a lot harder to recycle? Yes. And should we be careful about what we recycle? Definitely.

Keeping the recycling stream free from contamination means that the items that can be recycled, will be.

It is important to remember that the items you recycle must be clean. This means nothing with food or grease on it and no film plastics or plastic bags.

Recyclables should be kept loose; putting them in a bag slows down the recycling process. Polystyrene foam, commonly called Styrofoam, should never go in the blue bin. Recycling information can be found on the insert that comes with your waste bill, on the city of Carpinteria website, and at lessismore.org.

Embrace the sandbag

By ChuCk Graham There is nothing like an early morning workout on the beach in Carpinteria, but this was a little different. I found trainer Muhammed Mehai leading a handful of Fat Club (FC) devotees cradling, pounding and hoisting 40- to 50-pound sandbags across a deserted, pre-sunrise beach.

Fat Club isn’t anything new in Santa Barbara, but it’s just taking shape in Carpinteria, with only one eight-week session under its belt, Mehai is leading the way for those who are striving for something more than the routine gym workout.

“It is absolutely a big commitment to make,” said Mehai, who graduated from Carpinteria High School in 2012 and Westmont College in 2016. “I am asking people to make a drastic lifestyle change.

Fat Club is not another gym or fitness program. It is a unique experience that leads people to take complete control of their health for the rest of their lives. There really isn’t anything fancy about what we do. Rather, we focus on the basics and make sure we do them really well. And this is why our participants experience the incredible change that has given this program its reputation.”

The eight-week sessions are one hour every day, Monday to Friday. Much of the workout involves the use of a weighty sandbag, and the effort put into each workout is in soft sand.

“We set that timeframe to achieve maximum results as well as strengthen a group of individuals to inspire one another and become committed to themselves and each other,” said Mehai, a beach lifeguard in Carpinteria and an Emergency Medical Technician. “Because the program is so focused on results, we wanted a window that was long enough to hit individual goals, but short enough to feel achievable.”

At the end of each workout Mehai hands out healthy meals to each participant prepared by FC’s personal chef.

Although Fat Club was born and bred in Santa Barbara and has been operating for years, it’s only just evolving in Carpinteria. Mehai is tweaking things daily to match the fitness levels and needs of participants. He wants that one hour to be a full immersion, a time for participants to focus on themselves before starting the grind of another busy day.

That experience honed his knowledge in human movement and a love for the outdoors, which eventually led him to Fat Club.

“I had been working for Fat Club in Santa Barbara for over a year and was able to see first-hand the immensely positive changes it had on everyone involved,” said Mehai. “Starting FC in Carp started over coffee during a casual conversation between the founder of FC (Andy Schmiess) and me. It was very straightforward, and the framework of FC encompassed everything that has driven me in my life so far, in that it was authentic, required hard work and was focused on building community. It was clear to me that I needed to bring FC to the town that I grew up in and train on the beach that had already given me so much.”

Adjustments by Warriors pay off in 57-6 pasting of Beverly Hills

With a handful of key players on the bench, the Carpinteria High School football team needed to make some quick changes before heading into last week’s (Sept. 6) game against Beverly Hills. One change, inserting Will Collins into the running back slot, returned huge dividends as the six-foot, four-inch, 215-pounder scored five touchdowns in the Warriors’ 57-6 rout of Beverly Hills at Valley Memorial Stadium. It’s the first victory for new coach Mario Robinson, and his team who lost 42-0 on the very same field the week before, making the Warriors 1-1 on the year.

“When we met as a team last week, losing two starters (Danny Grimes and Jacob Macias) to major injuries, we said to them, ‘Hey, which of you guys are ready to move around?’” explained Robinson. “Collins was the first one to raise his hand, saying, ’I’ll go anywhere you want, I don’t have to play quarterback.’” Collins, a senior, was slated as quarterback in the season opener. The move led to immediate results.

Collins scored the Warriors first touchdown of the year on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Diego Mendez, putting the home team up 6-0 in the first quarter.

Carpinteria got on the scoreboard again when an errant Norman snap went through their own end zone for a safety. The Warriors’ lead moved to 8-0. Following the kickoff, Carpinteria had the ball in a good field position at the Beverly Hills 38. The short drive resulted in another score, as Collins’ 12-yard touchdown-run built the lead to 14-0. Then, Collins tallied his third touchdown, a 15-yard run on the last play of the quarter bringing the score to 21-0.

With a little under nine minutes to play, Richard De Alba stepped in front of a Norman pass, picking it off for an interception at the Carpinteria 23. The two teams exchanged punts, and the Warriors took over at their own 25. On the next play, Collins found room off the right tackle, rambling 75 yards for the score, and giving his team a 28-0 lead with 4:19 till halftime.

However, the Normans made a change of their own, replacing starting quarterback Dan Menache with Thomas Recupero, and making their way to the Carpinteria 40. Recupero then connected with Ilai Dardashti for a 40-yard touchdown play, and the Normans were on the scoreboard, trailing 28-6 with 1:37 left in the half. The Warriors fumbled the ball back to the visitors before the half ended, but Tyler Cervantes’ interception thwarted the Beverly Hills scoring threat, and Carpinteria took a three-touchdown lead into halftime.

The Warriors added another touchdown in the third when Mendez hit Diego Hernandez on a 14-yard slant for a score.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH

Sight unseen

Please join me in a moment of silence for my dearly departed Clark Foammodified Hitachi surfboard power planer, which died on Thursday, Sept.

6, 2019, after 24 years of faithful service.

The Hitachi came my way in 1995, when I went in on the purchase with two college buddies—pals from surfing in Santa Cruz. There was more surfing than college going on for us in those years, though eventually we all graduated from UCSC. At the time, and in reaction to the wafer-thin boards of the day, I was shaping single fins in the six- to seven-foot range, looking to replicate the flow and glide I experienced on a special surfboard I’d come to possess in the Philippines— a 7’4” Brother’s Neilson from the Gold Coast of Australia, shaped in 1972, with a logo of waves and palm trees that looked suspiciously like sativa leaves—that I purchased from Kiwi ex-pat who owned a bamboo furniture company in Manila, and was a keen surfer.

Some of the boards I made worked better than others, naturally, but I stayed with it in the post college years—even shaping a 6’6” round pin single fin for a bike/surf trip to Ireland in 2001. A photo of the board ended up in the back pages of Surfing Magazine under the feet of my buddy Joe Curren, who I ended up participating with in a “surfing carnival” event in Scotland, masterminded by surfing mastermind, Derek Hynd.

All this to say, whereas my buddies shaped a few boards here and there, the Hitachi power planer was spending more and more time in my hands, until finally one night when we’d gotten together after some time (they’d gotten married,

The right thing to do of course, now that I’ve learned more in shaping, is to surprise them with a board a piece—a nearly 25-year investment finally offering its yield.

The learning curve (at least for me) has been long, if not terribly steep: just a continual practice of refinement and understanding that I am coming to realize I am only just beginning to grasp. The Hitachi has been an integral part of that process. As I became more familiar with the tool I found the hand placement that worked best, learning to drag a finger behind on the rail-band cuts like steering with a rudder on a boat.

Somewhere around 2006 or so, the front handle on the depth-adjustment snapped clean in half. I fashioned a new handle from a scrap of mahogany I had from my boat building project on “Cor-

morant,” and I laid-up a fairing-hood over the exhaust port with a couple of layers of fiberglass to direct the foam dust away from my face. I made the planer my own, and I loved it well—that forward handle worn smooth by use.

The margins are tight in a burgeoning surfboard business (as I suspect they are in a well-established one, too) so the prospect of spending $400 for a model that isn’t at all proportioned like my Clark Foam Hitachi, much less $1,200 for a deluxe Accurate planer (a beautiful, powerful machine), is a bit daunting. But I was talking to a friend of mine in Hawaii, Lyle Carlson, who shapes big wave guns (and anything else a surfer cares to ride), and he told me that he has a planer for me that he got while mentoring under the great Dick Brewer.

But not just any old planer, either. Lyle is giving me the extra Skil 100 that he has.

He told me, “I can see you’re not going to

quit shaping, and I want to pass the excalibur to you.” And that’s exactly what the tool is—the masters’ sword, what shapers like Matt Moore and Al Merrick have used throughout their careers. The Skil 100 isn’t even made anymore, it’s a holdover from the great American age of manufacturing and engineering, a post-war tool for carpenters that surfers discovered for building the boards we require. I am supremely stoked. I am humbled and so grateful for my network of friends.

CHS’s Will Collins named SBART Male Athlete of the Week

Carpinteria High School football player Will Collins was named the Male Athlete of the Week at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Luncheon held at Harry’s Plaza Café on Sept. 9. The Carpinteria senior was moved from quarterback to running back in the Warriors matchup last week against Beverly Hills. Collins scored five touchdowns, with four on the ground and a touchdown catch in a 57-6 thumping of the Beverly Hills Normans.

“Last time I played running back was eighth grade, so it was a while, but I love running the ball,” said Collins.

The six-foot, four-inch, 215-pounder amassed 157 yards on 13 carries to lead his team to its first victory of the year.

September 5 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team notched their first win of the season, beating Cabrillo of Lompoc in a non-league match, 9-9, and 72-69 in games to capture the tiebreaker. “Although they did not win their sets, Xochitl Moctezuma and Abbie Delwiche/Natalia Perez each picked up valuable games in that last round that put us over the top,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In doubles, Jeannette Carrillo/Zahra Porinsh went 3-0 and came back from a 2-5 deficit in their last round to pull out a 7-5 win. “In singles, Emma Lapidus continued her winning ways going 3-0 and only dropping two games on the day,” added Bryant. Sydney Endow also swept and only dropped two games. Carpinteria is now 1-2 overall and will be on the road against Division-Two Thacher on Thursday, Sept. 12.

September 3 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team dropped a match to Thousand Oaks by a score of 21–9. Senior Gabe Medel scored three goals and sophomore Beau Persoon scored a goal in the early going. The Warriors fall to 1-1 on the year and will compete in Conejo Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

September 6 and 7 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team competed in the Conejo Tournament over the weekend. The Warriors won the first match because of a forfeit by Calabasas. They then took on Oxnard and came out of the pool with a 9-7 win. In the third match, Carpinteria was on the wrong end of a 9-7 match, falling to Alemany. And in the final match, they lost to Moorpark, 22-13, finishing 2-2 for the tournament.

August 29 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a non-league match to Pacifica of Oxnard, 10-8. Emma Lapidus led the Warriors by going 3-0 in singles. Sydney Endow went 1-2, Jeannette Carrillo/Zahra Porinsh went 2-1, as did Mercy Torres/Lexi Persoon during the match. “This was a great opening match for us as most of the players were able to get their first varsity action in, and actually about half were getting their first tennis action in,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Both doubles teams played well against the veteran Triton teams, I was happy with how we played and competed.”

September 3 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team traveled to Dos Pueblos and lost a non-league match against the Division–Two Chargers, 13-5. “Again, we were led by Emma Lapidus who went 2-1 in singles, winning her matches by a fairly wide margin,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Sydney Endow went 1-2, and in doubles, Abbie Delwiche/Natalia Perez also 1-2 on the day, as did Jeannette Carrillo/Mercy Torres.

Libero number–14 Emily Montoya yielded 12 digs in the back row. “Chaminade was well–equipped on all fronts, played consistent and never looked back,” said Warriors coach Dino garcia. Carpinteria’s overall record is now, 2–2.

Director Dudley Conneely and Beau Wilding of EyeShine teamed up to present their program to Morning Rotary. EyeShine does not focus on a disability such as blindness, but focuses on how to engage the disabled in fun adventures with adaptive help. For instance, the program assists kids with water-skiing, ball games and other team games that promote self-esteem and a feeling of inclusiveness. The 80 attending our family reunion last month was a wee portion of what two people started in 1909, as all in, the progeny of our common ancestors approaches 300. These ancestors were Michele “Mike” and Kathryn Grimes Lombardi, my paternal great-grandparents.

In 1893, nine-year old Mike came from Italy with his mother and after landing at Ellis Island, traveled across the country to Denver where they were reunited with his father, who worked as a laborer for the railroad.

Kathryn’s parents had come from Ireland in 1870 and lived in New York for at least 10 years before moving to Denver, where Kathryn was born in 1883. After attending the Colorado Normal School, she entered her young womanhood as a teacher.

Though I don’t know for certain how Mike and Kathryn met, a few years before they wed, they lived on the same street less than a block away from each other.

This was during the time that Mike was working as a stenographer for the Miller Osborn Spice Company. Also working as a stenographer in Denver at the time was a gentleman by the name of Harry V. Loggins, who married Kathryn’s sister, Anastasia, in 1908—the year before Mike and Kathryn wed. It is not much of a stretch of the imagination to consider that Mike and Harry knew each other, one or the other first met a Grimes daughter, then introduced her sister to his friend.

Mike and Kathryn had three sons and one daughter, and from these children our family began to grow.

Which brings me to the “something new” aspect of the day. My cousin-in-law Halli is also a genealogist in our family, and to her goes the award for Find of the Year. She had my cousin and uncle take the 23andMe DNA test and when the results came back, discovered a relation living in Golden, Colorado, by the name of Pietrantonio “Tony” Lombardi. Tony contacted Halli and they had a pleasant conversation during which she learned he had written a book entitled “Nonno, Tell Us a Story: The Story of an Italian Family, From the Old World to the New.” She purchased the book from Amazon and

brought it to the reunion to share.

The grand coup in connecting with Tony is that he grew up in the same small town as my great-grandfather—Pagliarone, Italy—and his family settled in Denver, Colorado, as my family did, though 65 years later. I have long known that we have a potential legion of relations in the Denver area, but this is the closest we’ve come to finding one. The 23andMe results note that Tony is a third cousin but so far, I have not found our common ancestor. I am hoping to meet and have a conversation with him myself soon, and perhaps we can figure it out.

I have only been able to read snippets of his book as my father is entrenched in it now, but I know it will shed much light on what life was like for my greatgrandfather and his parents. The family names are all there—Lombardi, Carmosino, Iacovetta—and I look forward to more vividly coloring in the lives of these ancestors.

So much to be discovered and enjoyed, at the many tables of a family reunion.

Carp-a-Cabana raises funds for arts program

The Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) held its 27th Annual Carp-a-Cabana event at Carpinteria High School on Saturday, Sept. 7, under a beautiful late summer sky. Attendees enjoyed a hosted bar, buffet dinner, music and live and silent auctions in support of the Carpinteria Unified School District’s Performing Arts Program, led for more than 30 years by Elise Unruh, who was honored for her years of service to area schools. Sharing her passion for music and theater with multiple generations of students in Carpinteria, Unruh has taught drama, vocal ensemble and orchestra at the high school, and band at both the middle and high schools, advised for Muses, Carpinteria High School’s fully inclusive drama club and advocated for the arts in all district schools.

Like a pubescent boy’s overgrown feet, their minds are coming of age a little more quickly than they can handle with any kind of coordination.

Max (Jacob Tremblay) is a tad more mature than the others. The other two members of the friend group—Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor (Brady Noon)—are mostly posers. The biggest difference is that, while they all talk a lot about sex, only Max actually has the raging hormones to back it up.

And the object of those hormones, and Max’s undying affection, is Brixlee (Millie Davis). He doesn’t really know her. But he’s way into her. So, naturally, he makes her something in art class, consults with the necessary intermediaries, and works the middle-school back channels to set up an all-important rendezvous with Brixlee.

Luckily, a “kissing party” is coming up and Max sees his opening.

Meanwhile, Lucas and Thor have their own stuff to deal with. Lucas’ parents are getting divorced. Thor, despite his rough exterior, is hardly winning the admiration of school bullies, and he feels that all-too-common pressure to be something other than what he wants to be (which is a Broadway-style singer).

Still, despite their mix of pre-teen woes, they all end up getting wrapped up in Max’s plot. Max realizes he doesn’t know how to kiss. But instead of just Googling the dang thing, the three boys use Max’s dad’s drone to spy on some teenagers who, they figure, must be kissing.

They aren’t. But the teens do notice the drone. And then things spiral out of control (including the drone). Now Max and co. have a new problem—getting

So they have to get a drone. Which means they must somehow get to the mall on their own while also avoiding the pissed off teens and while still making the necessary preparations for the kissing party. Oh, and also while being cool—they have to be cool as well.

“Good Boys” delivers a minor miracle.

It portrays middle school boys in a way that more-or-less rings true, and yet also, somehow, makes them endearing—even, dare I say it, loveable. What really is the worst demographic in the known universe comes out looking, not just human, or understandably vulnerable, but also kind of sweet.

The movie is funny, too. And smartly funny. It has an extra layer of wit and biting sarcasm, which, coupled with the fun (if not groundbreakingly innovative) situational humor, makes for a smileinducing 90 minutes.

“Good Boys” does not have grand ambitions. It tries to be charming and succeeds, but the film is not sappy, nor does it pack a particularly heavy emotional punch. It takes the kids, but not itself, seriously.

So, if you’re at least five years older than the kids in this movie, or have a parent or guardian lax enough to take you, it’s worth a good time.

“Good Boys” is rated R for strong crude sexual content, drug and alcohol material, and language throughout—all involving tweens.
