Boy Scout spearheads flag retirement depository

By DeBra HerriCK Sixteen-year-old boy scout Kameron Dayka teamed up with the CarpinteriaSummerland Fire Protection District to establish a depository for old and worn flags as part of his final requirement towards the rank of Eagle Scout. The drop box was unveiled at its permanent home at Fire Station 1, 911 Walnut Ave., along with a commemorative plaque, at a wellattended public ceremony on April 27.

“I chose this project because about a year ago flags were being given to my Boy Scout troop by local businesses and individuals who knew the boy scouts would properly retire them,” said Dayka.

“During that time, my troop leader put me in charge of holding flag retirement ceremonies for all the flags that had been given. We ended up holding multiple ceremonies and retiring a large number of flags. This gave me the idea for my project, as I realized there was nowhere in our community where people could deposit their old flags to be retired and know they would be properly taken care of.”

Faded or tattered American flags left in the drop box will be properly disposed of by the Boy Scouts of America in a dignified and ceremonious fashion, states the new plaque.

Dayka raised money through donations from local service clubs, friends and family. Local businesses donated materials. “Finishing this project is very satisfying, as all the hours of hard work, effort and commitment are now paying off. I am also very proud because I knew how I wanted the project to look when it was finished, and it turned out exactly as I wanted it!” said Dayka. Currently at the rank of Life Scout, Dayka will now take his completed project for an Eagle Board of Review in the hopes of promotion to the rank of Eagle Scout.

Carbajal gives hopeful message at chamber event

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Legislative Breakfast on April 26 with a keynote address from Congressman Salud Carbajal.

The chamber’s invited guest Vartan Dijhanian from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce presented the 24th Congressional District representative with the U.S. Chamber’s Spirit of Enterprise Award. On accepting the award, Cabajal praised the U.S. Chamber for its support of improving trade and infrastructure.

Carbajal went on to address the crowd, stating that “enhancing our local economy by supporting our small businesses and entrepreneurs continues to be a priority for me.” The audience nodded agreeing as he added, “We all know that small business is the backbone of a strong economy.”

Pointing out that there’s a lack of workforce for the ag sector, he went on to discuss the area’s growing cannabis industry. “I know that we have a major business industry sector that is starting out here in California,” he said, “Because you, voters in the state of California, voted to legalize recreational marijuana and this is causing some growing pains… Its causing some consternation.” With optimism, Carbajal called the tension in large part “a land use issue,” one that local government will find a solution for because, after all, “it is the law of the land” and “we need to help this business succeed.” The end result, will, according to Carbajal, be a “win-win situation.” At the federal level, Carbajal noted areas that he and his colleagues are working to help ease the transition for legal cannabis growers and local communities. “We should treat marijuana like we treat alcohol,” asserted Carbajal.

he hears major concerns from constituents regarding immigration policies. He is working to help the “broken immigration system,” he said, in a “peaceful way that continues to bring about progress.”

For example, Carbajal sponsored a bill to allow current farmworkers “to come out of the shadows” with “a pathway to legal residence.” It’s a personal issue for Carbajal whose father was a farmworker (though not undocumented).

Carbajal spoke jovially about what he called the “glimmers of hope” he sees in his bipartisan work in the “Problem Solvers Caucus” of 60 members, half Republican and half Democrat. The caucus works to find common ground on issues like infrastructure, immigration and healthcare.

In response to a question from Carpinteria Unified School District board member Rogelio Delgado on how to persuade people to accept the cannabis industry, Carbajal responded candidly, “It’s not my job to convince people. The voters voted. My job is to look at policy… The California voters overwhelmingly voted for it… There might be some buyer’s remorse… due to the challenges… but the different groups need to come to a solution. In Washington, we’re trying to solve the state rights/federal rights issue.

Local governments… with a democratic process need to find a balance.”

Carbajal ended on a high note, calling the tight-knit community event, “basically a town hall meeting.”

Gary Louis Feramisco passed away suddenly on Friday, April 26, 2019, at his home in Carpinteria. Gary was born in Fresno, California on June 16, 1941, to Louie and Mary Feramisco. Although an only child, Gary grew up surrounded by his large Italian extended family. Family gatherings, with lots of home-cooked Italian dishes, were a staple of his upbringing. As a boy, Gary loved sports and working alongside his dad in his automotive shop.

Gary attended parochial school and graduated from San Joaquin Memorial High School in 1959. After graduation, Gary enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he served as an active and reserve officer. He was very proud of his service and his Master Chief Petty Officer rank, and after over 33 years of service in the Coast Guard, he was honorably discharged in 1993.

Gary went on to earn his business administration degree from Fresno State University. And in 1970, he married Diane Marie Bennett. He began working as a retirement clerk for the county of Fresno, and after a few years accepted a similar position for San Joaquin County.

While living in Stockton, California, Gary and Diane were blessed by the arrival of their son Gary, Jr. in 1975. Not long after, the family then moved back to Fresno, where Gary went back to work for Fresno County as an investment administrator.

Being a very driven person, Gary looked to move up in his career. hired as the assistant treasurer of Santa Barbara county in 1982 and was thrilled to move his family to beautiful Carpinteria.

In 1985, he was elected as the tax collector and public administrator of Santa Barbara County. Gary’s job included many aspects from collecting taxes, serving as public guardian, investing the county’s retirement savings, and serving as the Retirement Administrator for the County Pension Plan. He was a long time member of the California Association of Treasurer-Tax Collectors. He was a founding member of the California Retired County Employees Association and the State Association of the County Retirement Systems. Over the course of his 20 years as an elected official, the County’s portfolio went from $110 million in 1985 to over $750 million when he retired at the age of 61. Gary was a no-nonsense, no-excuses type of boss, but was beloved by the people he worked with, and was quick to credit his successes to his department’s employees.

Gary was a loving and proud father and never missed an activity or sporting event his son was a part of. And during his 16 years of retirement, Gary enjoyed many days out on our local golf courses.

Gary loved the Carpinteria golf group he played with on Fridays. He liked to travel and watch sporting events. Gary’s favorite teams were the Carpinteria Warriors and USC Trojans. Gary has held Trojan football season tickets since 1987 and rarely missed a game. In recent years, Gary delighted in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Diane, his son Gary, Jr., daughter-in-law Larissa, and his grandchildren Grant and Brinley, all of Carpinteria. In his 77 years, Gary truly lived life and achieved that American dream his family hoped for. Gary’s huge smile, hearty laugh, warm heart, profound wisdom, and generous spirit will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

A funeral mass will take place at St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria on Friday, May 3, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be sent in his memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 530 Hot Springs Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93108.

Grace Moyer 11/11/1925 – 4/27/2019

Grace Adelle Moyer (Wright), born Nov. 11, 1925, passed away on April 27, 2019. She is survived by her brother, Richard Wright; her son, John Moyer; granddaughters, Jesse DeSanti, Trisha Chamberlain and Tammy Cherry; and great grandchildren, Luke Joles, Enzo DeSanti, Sauvie Grace DeSanti, Khloe Chamberlain and Emily Cherry.

Grace Moyer was born in Colorado and moved with her mother, brother and sister to West Hollywood during the Great Depression. She met her life partner, John Moyer, at West Hollywood High School. The two married, and after WWII, moved to Santa Barbara County, eventually settling in Carpinteria in the early ‘50s where they owned Moyer’s Chevron Service Station on the corner of Linden and Carpinteria avenues.

Grace could be found feeding children in the cafeteria at Canalino Elementary School, or shelving books at the Carpinteria Library, where she eventually became the head librarian, serving for over 30 years. Generations of Carpinteria school children sat in on her summer reading club and story time. When she retired, she continued shelving books as a volunteer for many more years. People remember Grace for her kind words, her loving presence, and especially her generosity.

Later in life, Grace joined her good friend Nedra Bianchine at Summerland Presbyterian Church and continued to attend after Nedra’s passing. She was never deterred from her generous nature, becoming a constant in the church kitchen, which was aptly named Grace’s Kitchen as a show of appreciation from her fellow parishioners. A celebration of Grace’s life will be held on May 14, at 4 p.m. at Grace’s Kitchen, Summerland Presbyterian Church, 2400 Lillie Ave., Summerland, California.

Yes, CMS is a good school

When I found out my daughter would be attending Carpinteria Middle School after attending private school all her life, I cried. I had heard nothing but negative things about the school. She has now been there for two years and I wish to share our personal experience, which disproved everything I had heard previously. My daughter has thrived at CMS. She is a high honor student with a 3.9 GPA, involved in Student Leadership, Drama Club and other activities. My biggest concern was that she would get lost in the shuffle socially and academically at CMS, however, neither has happened.

CMS teachers encourage their students to reach out anytime. In math (a subject at which my daughter has to work very hard), she has a teacher who will meet with her before or after school to support her. In Language Arts, her teacher responded to my daughter ’s request to read more classics and customized a supplemental personalized reading plan for her and then met with her at Nutrition breaks as their own “book club” to discuss each book as she read it. Every teacher we have had at CMS exemplifies what true teachers should be: passionate, caring and committed to helping all students.

Socially my daughter is thriving, too.

Middle school years are hard no matter where one goes to school. Kids can be mean (there is a difference between “mean” and “bullying”). I tell my daughter every day that mean people will always exist—even when you grow up—so now is the time to start practicing how to handle it. She has a nice group of really great kids who are her friends.

We have been very pleased with our CMS experience. The teachers we have encountered are committed to true education and we are so grateful for each of them.

Our school employees need a positive union rep

It is very difficult for me to write this letter, however, the verbal abuse directed to our superintendent Diana Rigby and three board members by the district union representative at the last school board meeting was reprehensible and very insulting. His gibberish did nothing to help resolve the district’s financial problems.

Having a representative like this is costing the district many dollars that could be used to lessen the district’s financial problems. Two-fifths of his salary and additional dollars are going toward attempting to resolve his negative actions. Unfortunately, he represents all of our teachers and classified employees.

Too many issues that do not need legal discussions are legally haggled over because of his negative attacks.

CUSD has so many outstanding employees and they need to be represented by someone who is positive and has constructive recommendations.

As a community, we need to get more involved in the educational affairs of our district and make sure that we are represented at all levels by those who have the knowledge in both the cognitive and affective domains. Our kids need positive representatives on all parts of our educational system, and we all need to work together in constructive ways.

Speaking out

I just returned from a CUSD board meeting. The room was full of people wanting to discuss proposed budget cuts, as well as youth completing a school assignment. I’m grateful our youth were there; the meeting was about them. It’s important they hear about things on the chopping block.

Both my daughter and I spoke at the meeting. My daughter spoke passionately, clarifying that indeed the library is open 11 hours a day and proposed cuts take away a minimum of 30 percent of the hours. I’m very proud of her. She made her voice heard.

I struggled to stay objective in the meeting after one board member made a comment that elicited a large response from the crowd. What helped me take a breath was board member Rogelio Delgado. His compassion for the crowd’s feelings helped bring light back into the meeting.

In response to Delgado’s point that kids would continue suffer with all the cuts proposed, a board member retorted, “the kids aren’t suffering.” I was baffled.

I frequently hear about bullying, suicide attempts, anxiety, depression and much pain; the California Healthy Kids Survey made public by CUSD, showed how dissatisfied people are with their connection to the school. Does this board member ever spend time on any of the campuses or converse with anyone currently attending the school? Kudos to the students who asked the member to not speak for them.

ADA-compliance is good for the environment

Thank you, city of Santa Barbara, for recognizing compostable is not the same as biodegradable in our landfills and in our oceans. Every little bit of awareness helps. If given enough time, everything breaks down to its essential elements. Life on this planet for carbon-based lifeforms can only exist in a narrow band of conditions. Each generation has to find a way to live in this world without consuming it or destroying each other in the process. If the city gets rid of public drinking fountains, use of plastic bottles will increase, and will remain a major contributor of plastic waste.

A growing number of businesses are using California’s right to refuse service as reason to deny use of restrooms at their discretion. Until public-use toilets are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act this could be seen as another form of discrimination for the segment of population who need an ADA-safe, accessible space. Disposable adult size diapers are considered a convenience, but they overtax our open landfills and remain a possible source of contagion and the spread of infectious diseases. Disposable diapers are not a viable alternative for people using wheelchairs, think about it.

The population is aging, and accessibility will remain an issue as long as there are people who use wheelchairs.

Democratic-Socialism is an oxymoron

Democratic-Socialism is an oxymoron; it combines two contradictory words.

Socialism is actually antithetical to democracy. If you give control of the means of production, distribution, management of industries and social services to the government, then you have given up self-determination and freedom.

The government then must determine what you get, when you get it, whether you need it and most importantly whether you “deserve” it. They must rank you personally and morally. Listen to the language: it is about lack, deficiency, dearth and scarcity. It is about who has more and does not deserve it. Did you ever notice how socialists tell you someone’s intent, then puts it in personal terms such as evil, immoral, deplorable, sexist or racist, then report that as fact? This is important.

They are ranking you morally and finding you “undeserving.” Socialist thinking turns people inward, because it begins with lack. Resources are limited because Socialism creates nothing, it can only redistribute what someone else creates.

One of the interesting things about free-enterprise language and thinking is that it requires you to reach outwardly toward others. It is hopeful. It requires you do something for someone else. Its language is about your ability to improve your life, by reaching out and improving the lives of others. Its language is about creativity, capability, innovation, meeting needs, solving problems. When you run a business, you are trying to satisfy the needs of your customers. If you don’t meet those needs, then you don’t have a business. A vibrant economy is a system that works for everyone. Socialism, by its very nature creates poverty and lack.

Because it creates no new wealth, it cannot create a thriving economy.

Immigration problems

California is a sanctuary state, and as such the majority of its politicians support open borders. Simply put, in California the welfare of illegal immigrants is put ahead of Californians. Today, illegal immigration is a huge problem. It is a crisis. Drugs, gangs, criminals, sex traffickers and men from terrorist countries are flooding our borders. Children are being used as pawns to represent phony families. And yet, the Democratic Party denies it is happening. There are also other immigration issues. “Birth tourists” have become a big problem. Now “burglary tourism” has reared its ugly head.

Individuals come to the U.S. on temporary visas and are part of an international operation. The question must be asked?

Who is looking out for the safety, protection and property rights of Americans?

School board approves resolution of layoffs for support staff, reduced hours for instructional aides

By WilliAM ArMShAW The subject of budget cuts once again dominated the heavily attended Carpinteria Unified School District board meeting on April 23. As board members discussed a menu of options for spending reductions, they came under fire from students, teachers, staff and union leadership who spoke out against studentfacing cuts. Board members voted on two resolutions concerning layoffs and reductions in hours, one to terminate the high school after-school program, and the other to layoff some custodial and technology support staff and to reduce hours for elementary instructional aides.

Both resolutions passed 3-1, with Trustee Rogelio Delgado dissenting.

Delgado argued strenuously against making any cuts beyond a one-time $215,000 savings from foregoing the adoption of new elementary school Language Arts and Science curricula, while other board members urged greater fiscal restraint. Jayme Bray made no apologies, saying “I am fiscally conservative, and I want this district to be solvent longterm.”

Board members focused on three scenarios, ranging from the curriculum cut of $215,000 to the more forceful Scenario #4, recommended by district management, which would reduce spending by roughly $809,000, with reserve balances remaining in the mid-single digits. Scenario #4 includes a cut in Carpinteria High School library hours to four hours per day, the elimination by attrition of a classroom Social Studies instructor position, and reductions in custodial and instructional aide staff hours. Although unrestricted revenues grew slightly from last year, up 1.59 percent, mandatory special education funding and pension obligations continued their high rate of increase.

Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald, in her Budget Study Session report, acknowledged cuts of $726,696 last year, and maintained that “this year, we will need to further reduce the unrestricted budget by $802,846.” She added that “With 82 percent of the budget allocated to salary and benefits, most of the reductions, unfortunately, will be in staffing.”

Fitzgerald’s position was countered by a flood of parents, teachers and students appearing before the board in opposition to further cuts. CHS librarian Rachel Bradley came prepared with a deck acknowledging the need for some reductions, specifying less painful cuts such as the curriculum change, reduction in field trip spending, and a $20,000 cut in athletics funding. CHS student Alana Gonzalez argued for greater face-to-face communication between district leadership and the student body, saying “when I heard the school board was considering reducing library hours, I was livid.” Gonzalez’s mother Kiki framed the library debate as a matter of mental wellness, asking if the library isn’t open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., “where are the kids going to go?”

Superintendent Diana Rigby and Fitzgerald recommended Scenario #4 to the board, urging them to remember that some cushion is required if broad-based raises are to be included in the 2019-20 budget. This position was supported by board members apart from Rogelio Delgado, who argued for lower reserve balances and higher per-year spending.

CHS student Will Collins brought a petition, signed by 205 CHS students and faculty, urging the board to spare the high school from further cuts, and to preserve the existing weight-training class. Board member Andy Sheaffer expressed his appreciation for the “civility, and for the insights,” but maintained the chief function of the board was to remain unemotional about cuts, and to be good stewards for the fiscal future of the district. He reminded board members that the reserve balance under Scenario #2, roughly 3.5 percent, would only be enough to cover two weeks of payroll, and offered no cushion for future raises.

Due to the loss of federal grant money, the 21st Century After School Program at CHS will be wound down at the end of the current school year, a resolution passed by a 3-1 vote, Delgado dissenting.

Citing lack of work and lack of funds, board members also voted in favor of a resolution to layoff and reduce hours for some custodial and technology support staff and to reduce hours for elementary instructional aides. Again, Delgado cast a dissenting vote, but the resolution passed 3-1.

The board appointed two members, Sheaffer and Sally Green, to screen applicants for the vacant trustee position.

In routine business, the board acknowledged several donations to the CHS FFA Walter Johnson Memorial, as well as for the Highway Patrol’s Every 15 Minutes anti-drinking and driving campaign. In her Superintendent’s Report, Rigby recognized California School Bus Driver’s Day, and urged parents,

students and community members to turn out for the CHS Open House for the new science labs, Monday, May 6, from 6 to 7 p.m., and to the student art exhibit at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

The board also approved contracts for Measure U spending to modernize the Aliso Elementary School campus, and for improvements to restrooms and modular classrooms for CHS.

Lopez organizes medical cannabis conference

Westmont professor offers advice for navigating the digital world

From distracted driving to cyber bullying and threats to American democracy, the digital age presents as much peril as it does opportunity. On the evening of Monday, April 22, Dr. Felicia Song gave a presentation to parents at the Canalino Elementary School cafeteria titled, “Against the Grain: Parenting in the Age of Digital Cool.” Focusing on the impact of social media and devices in the home, the Westmont sociologist began her presentation with a paraphrased quote from C. Wright Mills: “Our personal troubles are often public issues.”

With a number of sobering statistics and study findings, Song demonstrated the impact of hand-held and tablet devices on both children and adults, and provided some recommendations for managing family life in the digital age.

Statistics: A 2002 study found that the average American child spends 53 hours per week with media/technology; a 2010 study found that the average American child spends 7 hours or more looking at screens and sends 3,400 texts per month; 69 percent of parents and 78 percent of teens check devices hourly. According to a 2018 University of Michigan survey, 54 percent of children want their parents to be present, stop over-sharing about them on social media, moderate the use of de-

vices in the home and not be hypocritical about their own screen time.

The mere presence of a smart phone on a table top, Song reported, measurably reduces empathy and rapport among the people sharing the space. Like any other addictive activity or substance, social media produces elevated levels of dopamine in users’ brains and unchecked use can have negative effects on families—not least of which are higher levels of anxiety and trouble sleeping.

Silicon Valley executives and programmers alike are widely known to set strict limits on tech use for their children, and Song asked rhetorically that if the very people who design apps and devices are wary of their impacts on their own children and families, what do they know that the rest of us don’t? Some of the controls that parents who work in the technology sector use are: no iPhone till age 14, parental controls on all devices, no data plan till age 16 and no devices alone in a bedroom “ever, period.”

Song encouraged those attending her presentation to ask themselves, “Who do I want to be, who do I want my children to be?” In other words, what does one actually do with the hours of one’s life? She suggested that parents provide real-world experiences for their children as much as possible, and noted that the American Association of Pediatrics

recommends no screen time at all for children under the age of 18-months, and only one hour per day of co-viewing for children one to five-years-old.

In closing, Song offered a few more points of advice for parenting in the digital age: Model the behavior you want; ask “Can I be fully present with my children?”; experience solitude; rest (which requires “sacred” space and time with

no devices); prioritize time together; talk about media controls with children; use technology for empowerment, not digital babysitting. Finally, Song presented two resources for additional help in navigating the technological changes that shape many people’s experience of the world today—Common Sense Media’s website commonsensemedia.org, and the book “How to Break Up with Your Phone.”

approximately 35,000 cannabis plants in various stages of growth were found in an april 24 raid of a greenhouse on the 5800 block of Via real in Carpinteria.

Cannabis Compliance Team eradicates illegal operations

On April 24, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Cannabis Compliance Team, with the assistance of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office, the Sheriff’s Narcotics Team and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, executed a search warrant in the 5800 block of Via Real. The warrant was served for an indoor commercial cannabis site. The search warrant was the result of a lengthy investigation involving an invalid cannabis license and numerous neighborhood complaints.

During this search warrant, detectives located approximately 35,000 cannabis plants in various stages of growth, clones and nearly 200 pounds of dried product. The facility also appeared to have an inoperable odor mitigation system and large commercial generators, which appeared to be used to offset the power required to operate the facility.

Upon conclusion of the investigation, all planted cannabis was eradicated, and the dried product and other evidence was seized.

Following this warrant, a related search warrant was served on April 25, in the 2100 block of Sweeney Road, just outside the city of Lompoc. This site, which was related to the Via Real operation, was registered under a different name. Although no planted cannabis was located at that site, the location was being actively prepped for an approximate 29-acre outdoor cannabis grow.

The owner of the operation declined to meet with detectives at the time of the search warrant service, but a court date for his mandatory appearance was provided to his attorney’s office. Due to the active nature of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office will not release further information.

THE QUARTERLY REPORT J O N - R YA N S C H L O B O H M Real estate in 2019 is off and running in Carpinteria. One quarter is behind us as April comes to a close.

Taking a macro look at our small market, this year started with many single-family home sales. During the first quarter, 30 single-family homes were sold, a number far greater than the previous three years. What’s interesting is that many of these sales have been at a higher price point bringing our average home sales price up. Additionally, the number of sales that occurred off-market is unusual—10 out of the 30 homes were sold off-market.

At the same time, our condo market has stayed consistent and has not seen the same push. This year’s number of sales has remained consistent with the previous three years. There were 14 sales in the first quarter, which tracks consistently with 2016 through 2018. The notable change for the condo market is the drop in the median sales price. There has not been a price decrease but a change in the price-mix of condos sold. For the first quarter of 2019, five condos sold below $500,000, which brought down the median sales price. In comparison, in 2018, there was only one sale below $500,000 in the first quarter.

Now we are heading into the best time of the year, even though we must share our town and beaches with seasonal visitors. With interest rates back down and taxes behind us, as we head into summer, the market appears to be heating up.

Hopefully, the rest of the year is a good one for all of us and for real estate.

Artists Studio Tour set for Mother’s Day Weekend

On Mother’s Day weekend across Carpinteria and Summerland, artists will share a rare glimpse into the spaces where they design and create their work. The 13th annual Artists Studio Tour boasts 30 artists, both established and emerging talents, who will show diverse works-in-progress and offer live demos, providing visitors the opportunity to get a sense of how art is created from concept to completion.

Participating artists range from the assemblage work of Kathy Tepper to the bonsai and ceramic art of Joe Sacks and the lithographic printmaking of Garrett Speirs. A group show of participating artists will be on view in the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center’s Charles Lo Bue Gallery from May 9 to May 20. A reception will be held at the center on May 10, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A percentage of art sales made during the weekend event, May 9 to 11, will benefit the arts center. The studio tour is May 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A brochure for the self-guided tour, which includes a map and artist listings, is available at downtown shops, hotels and online at carpinteriaartscenter.org.

A native Carpinterian, John Wullbrandt is a descendent of the Mission Band of Chumash, along with immigrant Spanish, Mexican, Irish, English, Danish and German settlers. Wullbrandt has worked with diverse subjects and countless styles and sizes, ranging from miniature canvases to mammoth exterior murals.

He spent over a dozen years on the tiny Island of Lanai, Hawaii, where he founded the Lanai Art Center.

Wullbrandt’s studio is an historic family ranch in the Carpinteria Foothills which he has restored with his partner, Jean-Claude Rivalland. Wullbrandt is a member of the Oak Group and is represented in Carpinteria

Elissa Byrne learned the art of sculpture at the Braille Institute in Santa Barbara. She lived for many years in Tuscany, Italy, but returned home to California, moving to Carpinteria in 2013, six years after she was diagnosed with a genetic degenerative eye disorder “Mountains,” by Sharon Schock. that causes blindness. Byrne studied under ceramic artist Helene Webb at the Braille Institute and was a guest artist in Webb’s sculpture show at the Minnelli Trading Company’s showroom in Montecito in 2016. “Losing vision has opened doors to some wonderful new experiences,” said Byrne. “Sculpting, learning to play five musical instruments, learning new languages and hoop dancing are a few of the creative expressions that are now a part of my life.”

Carpinteria-based painter Sharon Schock studied fine art at Westmont College, but she’s been most of her life. She started painting with oils at age 6. Nowadays, Schock paints using an alla prima technique, painting wet-on-wet, usually in a single layer, and in a single sitting.

Painting this way keeps her paintings loose and lively.

Her work has been exhibited throughout Santa Barbara county, including shows at Westmont Museum of Art, Divine Inspiration Gallery, Palm Loft Gallery, Channing Peake Gallery and Regis University.

Brian Tepper moved to Carpinteria in 1984. His work has focused on Native American and Plains Indian Pictographic Art and more recently, abstract forms.

Today, he creates his abstract works using paints, plaster and reclaimed objects.

Of his abstract art, Tepper said, “After all, few things are as they appear on the surface.” Tepper has lectured and exhibited throughout Europe, and has shown his work in Los Angeles, the Southwest and New York.

Rural Michigan native Matthew Storke is a mixed media painter working in acrylics, charcoal and found objects. Following a career in design and art, Storke’s work incorporates icons, patterns and symbols that seek to connect the past with the present. Based in Carpinteria, Storke has exhibited in the Midwest, East Coast and Southern California as well as several exhibits in Europe.

Gillian Summers is a storyteller who grew up in Liverpool, UK, and has lived in Carpinteria since August 2018. Summers has told her autobiographical stories in theaters, bars and festivals from California to Chicago, and believes storytelling to be the ultimate connecter and healing antidote to this tech-obsessed world. Currently teaching storytelling to seniors at GranVida, Summers is now making her classes available to the wider community. Her four-week “Introduction to Storytelling Series” is designed to be fun, and does not require participants to be writers—stories will be told, not written. The workshop will focus on developing the telling of personal stories, with the goal of producing a seven- to 10-minute long story to share. Participants will also develop a greater capacity for listening to themselves and others with more compassion. Beginning on Sunday, May 5, and continuing each Sunday until May 26, the class will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road. by Ojai’s Jeff Sojka through June 9. Having traveled widely and studied in Europe, Sojka’s work evokes the spirit of the places he paints—whether ocean, mountain or city settings. The artist writes that he “likes to paint, surf, hike, travel and drink beer.” While he holds multiple degrees from UCSB and SDSU, Sojka says he “doesn’t really use” them, realizing instead that “painting was a lot of fun and that he should do this fulltime.”

Arts Center honors poetry contest winners Teen First Place Winner

Talented wordsmiths of all ages submitted their original poems to this year’s Luschei Family Poetry Contest put on by the Linda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

In blind review, the judges selected only a handful of poems in three categories–– children, teen and adult. In a ceremony on April 26 at the Arts Center, participants read their poems to a crowd of community poets and friends.

In the children’s category, first place went to Lilliana Grace Nemetz; honorable mentions went to Maria Elena Brennen, Evelyn Calkins, Arlo Ebbink and Jason Devine. Teen winners include Ruby McCullers (first place) and Audriy Alvarado Molino (honorable mention). First place for adults went to M. L. Brown. Mark Walker, John Wiley and Lauren Wilson received honorable mentions.

Reviving Summerland Beautiful

A juvenile elephant seal hauled itself ashore below Lookout Park last month.

When we and our leashed dogs approached, Susan Mailheau, a volunteer with the Channel Islands Marine Wildlife Institute, intercepted us for a chat.

The little pup looked to be in a poor state, and she told us that it had already been weened, was on its own and needed to rest. People were already too close for comfort, and since it was a big wave day, surfers were also busy right there.

Beach goers seem to need constant reminding about how to treat stranded marine mammals. Leave them alone.

Stay far enough away not to alarm them. Definitely keep dogs leashed and at a distance. Call the Marine & Wildlife Institute’s rescue hotline: (805) 567-1505.

THE SUMMERLAND SHORE F R A N D AV I S At its April board meeting the Summerland Citizens Association announced the formation of several new committees charged with reviving, protecting and beautifying our little town.

Elizabeth Winterhalter is serving as head of the beautification committee, a revival of the defunct Summerland Beautiful committee. She outlined steps her committee will take to brighten the downtown area. An immediate goal is to clean up medians, sidewalks and gutters.

Weeds have taken over these areas since the county abandoned its maintenance program. (The county is in the process of renegotiating a landscaping project.)

“We’ve had a couple of meetings,” Elizabeth said, “and there is great energy and desire to get beautiful back into Summerland Beautiful.”

Her committee will work in tandem with another newly formed group, the business revitalization committee, on the commercial landscaping along Lillie Avenue. One idea is to have commercial and residential Summerland Beautiful awards to encourage business and property owners to take pride in their businesses and homes.

Another idea floated at the SCA meeting was installing an Adopt a Highway sign for the section of freeway fronting Summerland.

There was some debate about whether to label the sign Summerland Beautiful or Summerland Citizens Association.

I kind of like the idea of the latter—the SCA sign—as being a clearer statement that the people of this little town, as a group, care about their environment. But either would work. Litter removal goes a long way toward keeping our surroundings inviting and attractive.

Downtown Summerland will open some long-closed doors for the annual Artist Studio Tour May 11 and 12. The tour, sponsored by the Carpinteria Arts Center, will feature three local artists displaying their works in the quaint cottage that once housed Café Luna and in the former Waxing Poetic building on the same property.

Woolpert will share the unique gallery spaces. An introduction to their art works will take place in the Waxing Poetic space, followed by a short walk to an expanded show in the larger cottage.

Current plans call for wine and snacks to maximize the pleasure of the viewing experience. According to Doris, who is on the tour’s planning committee, the property’s representative plans to line up a special food truck to serve hungry tour participants at the location.

Doris, who studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, Netherlands, has had her mixed media work featured in many galleries. Her paintings are inspired by nature, animals, plants, fossils, skulls, insects, as well as ancient tribes.

Photojournalist Ted Rhodes’ luminous photographs capture the illusively unique moments in peoples’ lives, which he describes as the “unexpected or unseen.” His widely published work has been featured in many galleries and shows locally and nationally.

meadows, mountains, trees and flowers.

He is currently working on a Nature Conservancy project to photograph a large north coast preserve recently acquired by the Conservancy.

The tour, which features more than two dozen artists, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, May 11 and 12. Brochures containing directions for the tour sites are widely available or can be picked up at the Arts Center in downtown Carpinteria.

The Summerland Sanitary District, the smallest special district on the South Coast, won the prestigious certificate of excellence from the Special District Leadership Foundation, a nonprofit independent organization based in Sacramento.

The award is given yearly to California special districts that exemplify essential governance transparency requirements.

In accepting the award, General Manager Michael Sullivan stated, “The entire district’s staff as well as the board of directors are to be commended for their contributions that empower the public with information, facilitate engagement and oversight.”

One good thing: The unexpected rush of childhood glee you experience on discovering a bright left-over Easter egg still hidden in the grass.

Warriors swept in first round of boys volleyball playoffs

The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team, reigning Citrus Coast League champions, hosted a first round CIF-SS Division Four playoff match on April 30 against third-place finishers Campbell Hall of the Gold Coast League.

But North Hollywood ran the table with a 3-0 win over the Warriors. The Vikings came into the contest 15-3 overall with a league record of 7-3 and will advance to the second round to take on St. Anthony, while Carpinteria finishes the year at 9-6.

Carpinteria got off to a good start when Diesle Slade slammed a spike down the baseline to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. However, a dink over the net by Campbell Hall’s Johnny Garnett put his team up 8-4. The Warriors continued to battle, with Miguel Enriquez serving up an ace to cut the deficit to three at 10-7. But when Gus Acord’s cross-court kill landed on the Warriors’ side of the net the lead was extended to 20-15. “The Vikings were well equipped all-around, from strong hitting power at the net to aggressive defense both back and front row,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. Campbell Hall ended up taking the first game, 25-17.

The two teams went back and forth in the second game, but with Gus Acord serving the Vikings pulled out to a 12-7 lead. Yet Luke Nakasone’s slippery serves brought the Warriors, trailing 20-15, within four points on a couple of occasions. “The Warriors stayed composed under the heavy pressure, but Campbell Hall was a force to be reckoned with,” explained Garcia. The Vikings’ six-foot, three-inch opposite hitter Chris Garnett closed out the game with a kill, and Carpinteria trailed, 2-0 in the match.

Campbell Hall came out on fire to begin game three, and when opposite hitter Jack Candido nailed another kill the Vikings were up 9-0. The Warriors continued to fight back but were unable to narrow the gap. “Libero Number-one Miguel Enriquez did a phenomenal job, back row for the Warriors, his mental game was solid no matter the situation,” said Garcia. Enriquez collected 24 digs for the match, many of which were hard-driven balls. Setter Luke Nakasone also dished out 14 assists for Carpinteria. However, Avery Palmer’s spike down the middle earned Campbell Hall a 3-0 sweep.

Outside hitter Liam Slade buried seven kills and served up an ace.

Middle blocker Luis Zamora defended the Warriors’ net with five kills and one block. Freshman Diesel Slade also notched four kills, and fellow freshman and middle blocker River Taff pitched in with two kills. “We ended exactly the way we wanted to end, we played to our potential,” said Garcia.

“Throughout the season, we were having a little bit of shaky moments, playing under pressure… and I’m really happy with our guys’ performance, we played to our ability, we gave Campbell Hall a good run for their money,” he explained.

Although the Warriors will lose five seniors from the 13 players on this year’s squad to graduation, Garcia is already looking forward to next season.

“We’re going to lose a little bit of foundation, but I’m excited for the youth we have here present,” he added.

In the Doubles final, Number-four Luke NahooikaikaAnderson/Cameron Gralewski beat Number-two Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/ Kirby Zapata, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3 in the battle of teammates. “Austin (Stone) was tough, he has had a long couple of days and really played smart,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Myles (Morgan) was unfortunately the beneficiary of a default as his very strong opponent from Nordhoff fell ill, it would have been a great match to watch had it occurred,” added Bryant.

April 24 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team finished the regular season with a non-league win over Laguna Blanca, 11-7. In Singles, Austin Stone went 1-0, while Myles Morgan went 1-1 losing a tiebreak to the Owls Kai Nakamura.

“Abraham Hernandez also played well in his only set,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In Doubles, Luke and Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson went 3-0 together.

Kirby Zapata/Cameron Gralewski went 2-0; and Esteban Zapata/Carlos Costilla went 1-1. Carpinteria finishes the regular season 19-4 overall, and 9-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

April 24 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team beat Nordhoff to win the Citrus Coast League championship, 3-1. “Go to outside hitter, Number-seven Liam Slade played excellent and finished the night with 17 kills, 5 aces,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Middle blocker, Number-10 Luis Zamora contributed at the net with 10 kills. Setter, Number-11 Luke Nakasone provided 31 assists for Carpinteria.

“Number-one Miguel Enriquez helped the Warriors stay in control with excellent communication. Miguel had 17 digs,” explained Garcia. Carpinteria finishes with a CCL record of 7-1, and an overall record of 9-5.

Track and field

April 25 – The Carpinteria High School boys track and field team hosted the Citrus Coast League Finals on campus at Valley Memorial Stadium. Sophomore Vincent Rinaldi won the 100 and 200 meters with times of 11.40 and 22.72 seconds. This was Rinaldi’s first meet in a month due to a hip injury. Brother Victor Rinaldi won the 400 and was part of the winning four x 400 relay team, running with teammates Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson, Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson and Mateo Handall. Isaac De Alba won the shot put by one-quarter of an inch with a throw of 46 feet, six-and-a-half inches. Kameron Dayka won the triple jump. Freshman Alexandra Zapata won the 800 with a Personal Record of 2:27.56 minutes. Fatima Cervantes won the high jump at four feet, nine inches. Nordhoff won the varsity boys meet, but when factored with dual meet standards, Santa Paula was league champion. Fillmore won the varsity girls meet, but when factored with dual meet standards, Nordhoff was league champion.

All league champions qualified for the CIF Prelims which will be held this Saturday, May 4 at Carpinteria High School. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events at noon. In addition to the league champions, the following Warriors also qualified: Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson for the 400 meters, and for the girls, Ytxzae Enriquez for the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, Lucy Light for the 100m Hurdles, Shaylah Alvarez and Savannah Alvarez for the Triple Jump, Caton Pettine for the High Jump and Sallury Hernandez for the Discus.

Cate School

April 23 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team beat Thacher, 15-9. “For the seniors, Maddie Erickson, Andreah Graf and injured Daphne McKeefry, the win was big.

It was their eighth varsity consecutive win in the past four years against the rival Toads,” explained Rams coach Renee Mack. “Today, Andreah Graf received our game ball MVP for her quick ground balls, transition play and ability to adjust to defense and midfield quickly,” added Mack. The other game ball MVP honor went to Piper Brooks who won nine draws and scored five goals. Kenzie Davidson added three goals, along with three from Lilly Riehl. Maddie Erickson converted two goals to go along with two assists, and Mia Foster chipped in two goals and one assist. Liza Borghesani made six saves.

Boys volleyball April 27 – The Cate School boys volleyball team took a CIF wildcard match against Ventura in three sets: 26-24, 25-20 and 26-24. Sophomore Albert Barber dished out 19 assists in the first two sets, establishing the middle attack. “Senior middle Carson Williams had a particularly good match with nine kills, followed up with junior Ethan Ng’s five, both hitting over a .500,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Outside Theo Mack had 14 kills and senior Cullen Barber contributed nine kills. Kenneth Liou, on the right, had two kills of his own. With Cate down 16-9 in game three, senior Sebastian Richardson, just off the injured reserve list, came in to take over the setting responsibility. The result was the Rams narrowing the margin to 20-19 en route to a game-three victory and a match sweep of the Cougars. The win advances Cate into a first-round encounter at La Serna.

Baseball April 23 – The Cate School baseball team beat rival Thacher, 4-2, to earn a spot in the CIF Playoffs. Scott Holmes, William Deardorff and Matty Holmes were all factors defensively in the Rams’ Frontier League win. Jack Deardorff threw a complete game for the victory. Cate travels to play Lennox Academy on May 2 for a first-round playoff matchup with the first pitch at 3:15 p.m.

Baseball

April 23 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team beat Fillmore, 2-1, in the Warriors final home game of the regular season at John Calderwood Field. Senior hurler Chase Mayer helped secure the win by picking off three runners during the game. The victory guarantees a CIF playoff spot for Carpinteria, as they can finish no lower than third place, but are still in the running for the Citrus Coast League title. Both Warrior runs came in the second inning on a bunt

by Jason Warren and a grounder by Luke Lounsbury. Three seniors were honored: Mayer, Vance Keiser and Noah Nuño in what could be their final home game. Unfortunately, Keiser, the school’s homecoming king, suffered a football injury and was unable to play baseball his final year but contributed by being the public address announcer for his team’s home games.

April 25 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell to Fillmore, 6-3.

However, even with the loss, the Warriors finished third in the Citrus Coast League and will travel to play Santa Clara tomorrow (May 3) in a CIF Wild Card matchup with the first pitch at 3:15 p.m.

Fillmore ended up tying Santa Paula for first place. Carpinteria finished 10-5 in league, tied with Malibu. The Warriors evened the game in the fourth at 2-2 when Andy Johnson drove home a run.

Luke Lounsbury had two hits, and Isaac Castillo had two RBI for Carpinteria.

Boys golf

April 25 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team shot a 496 at Elkin’s Ranch Golf Club in the fourth Citrus Coast League boys golf tournament of the season. “I was pleased with the effort of Caleb Nangle,” said Carpinteria coach Chris Cochrane. Nangle shot a 95. Tristan

Monday, April 22

7:11 p.m. / DUI accident / 700 block Linden Avenue

A passerby called 911 to report a female driver who was attempting to parallel park and backed into a tree in front of a restaurant in the 700 block of Linden Avenue. The reporting party heard the woman press the gas instead of the brake and was concerned that the driver was intoxicated. Deputies arrived at the scene and after a DUI investigation, the woman was arrested.

Tuesday, April 23

11:27 p.m. / Resisting arrest and a dagger / Bike Path at Casitas Pass Road

A man was riding a bicycle eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue at Casitas Pass Road with a second bicyclist with no front/rear bike lights. Both cyclists fled eastbound when a deputy attempted to make an enforcement stop by activating overhead red/blue lights. One of them stopped while the other continued on the bike path east of Casitas Pass. The man was unable to pedal fast enough to evade the patrol car and eventually gave up on the bike path on the north side of 101 freeway. He was taken into custody, and a search of his person was conducted.

A concealed dagger was discovered in his cargo pants pocket. The man was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, April 24,

10:23 a.m. / Public intoxication / Linden Avenue

A woman was contacted and arrested for public intoxication after yelling profanities at passersby.

11:15 p.m. / Under the influence of a controlled substance/ 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A vehicle was being repossessed in a fast food restaurant parking lot and the registered owners, a husband and wife, became confrontational and belligerent with the tow truck driver and his assistant. Upon arrival, deputies determined that the man and woman were under the influence of a controlled substance.

Both were uncooperative with the deputies and were subsequently arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, April 25

7:29 a.m. / Warrant arrest and open container / Carpinteria Avenue

A woman had an outstanding warrant and was contacted at the bus stop in front of a deli. She was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail. A man was also contacted with an open 24-ounce beer. The beer was poured out and he was cited and released from the scene.

4:41 p.m. / Found bicycle / 4100 block Via Real

A person called the Sheriff’s Office upon locating a Trek bicycle on Carpinteria Avenue with a “Free” sign attached to it. The reporting party rode the bicycle home but said something did not feel right about the bicycle, and they turned the bike in to the station as found property.

11:27 p.m. / False tags, possession / Casitas Pass and Cameo roads

A deputy initiated a traffic stop of a Jeep Cherokee for having false tags.

The man driving was contacted, and it was determined he was driving on a suspended license. A search of the vehicle yielded meth, drug paraphernalia and several pieces of identity belonging to other people, along with suspected forged and fictitious checks. The man was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail and the vehicle was towed.

Friday, April 26

4 a.m. / Vehicle rollover / Toro Canyon Park Road

Deputies were responding to an alarm call when they came upon a vehicle rollover. The vehicle was occupied by four individuals, all parties with moderate to minor injuries. One was transported to a hospital by ambulance. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

The road was wet and slippery, with the driver driving too fast for conditions and being unfamiliar with the roadway. CHP took over the investigation.

Saturday, April 27

1:16 a.m. / Possession / 5200 block Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies contacted a man for riding his bicycle without a mounted headlight. The man consented to a search of his backpack and meth was found in the side pocket.

After being arrested, a glass meth pipe was found his pants pocket. The man is on active probation for multiple charges.

1:56 a.m. / Warrant arrest / 4200 block Via Real

While heading back to the station, deputies observed a man and a woman in a verbal argument in front of a motel.

Both were intoxicated and had gone to a party somewhere in Carpinteria after the San Marcos High School prom. A records check showed that the man had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, and he was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

The 35th annual Carpinteria Kids Auction and Dinner will be held at Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, 4849 Foothill Road, on Saturday, May 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. Known for its high-quality silent auction, the gala event has a particularly appealing offering of a sport fishing trip to Cabo San Lucas this year, donated by the Big Red Crane Company and Castro’s Cleaning Service. With a value of $7,500, bidding will start at $4,500 for the trip that includes round-trip air fare for four, a three-night stay (two rooms, double occupancy) at Barcelo Grand Faro Los Cabos and one day of sport fishing in the rich local waters.

Rotary and Direct Relief partner to protect infants and mothers

Rotary Clubs partnering with Direct Relief International are working to protect vulnerable mothers and babies around the world. Dean Axelrod, president-elect of the Santa Barbara Rotary Club, shared stories with Carpinteria Morning Rotary of the need, importance and partnership solutions used to mitigate the problems that mothers and babies face in developing nations around the world. Babies are born at home in many countries, which is not necessarily dangerous if trained midwives are on hand to assist in delivery.

Rotary and Direct Relief International are partnering to provide a jeep and specialized midwife kits in Haiti, along with the efforts of other Rotary chapters to help in other countries.

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

It is always a delightful view on the Bluffs with the seals, people and marine life.

Below is a recap for the week of April 15 – 21.

Most pups have been weaned and are away from mothers.

In Carpinteria, most harbor seal pups are born between February and April. They can weigh about 15 to 20 pounds at birth. If born prematurely, harbor seals retain a whitish lanugo coat (which is usually lost before birth). A pup can swim at birth and will sometimes ride on its mother’s back when tired.

Pups make a bleating noise that sounds like “maaaa.” The mother has milk with a very high fat content with important antibodies. After about four weeks, the pups are weaned and have doubled their birth weight. After they are weaned it is often difficult to distinguish pups from adults unless they are seen nursing. Females and pups will haul out in the rookery to nurse, and to be prepared for their life in the wild. Adult females usually mate and give birth every year to a single pup.

Disturbances

There were many pelicans seen at the rookery. As they take off and land, they may disturb the seals who rush into the water. A dog and various walkers on the beach caused other disturbances.

Visitors

Volunteers counted 1,504 people at the overlook, including tourists from the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, Canada, Argentina, Austria, Germany, Israel, Canada, plus, Illinois, New York, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Utah, Georgia, Tennessee, Maine and California.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. “New Kid”

The transition to middle school can be a daunting, confusing rite of passage for most kids but for Jordan Banks it is nothing less than a culture shock as he finds himself one of the few students of color at a prestigious prep school. Disappointed that his parents didn’t enroll him at the art school of his dreams, Jordan must navigate his new school while keeping true to himself. An avid cartoonist, Jordan details his day-to-day life in his sketchbook documenting bus rides, his lower-tier soccer team experience, and most poignantly, the micro-aggressions he and other students endure at the predominately white school. Race and class dynamics are thoughtfully and humorously illustrated in this graphic novel. It is a rare book that showcases a black boy in his everyday life. We see him making new friends, exploring his interests, as well as confronting a culture that does not see him beyond his skin color. Whether it is the rude teacher who can’t remember any black students’ names or the privileged peer who excuses his ignorant comments as jokes, Jordan’s interactions with this cast of characters showcase why diversity and inclusion are important both in children’s literature and in our own lives.

Sue Grafton published “A is for Alibi” in 1982, and it was an immediate local success. She soon hit the national best sellers and was translated into 26 languages.

I’ve always been a history, biography and classic buff. In retirement I found Allende, Leon, Kingsford and McCall-Smith who all create wonders of non-fiction and fiction. Grafton seemed too corny, so I passed her by.

Recently, while traveling, I ran out of books and borrowed “C is for Corpse.”

What a kick it was figuring out where in Santa Barbara the stories take place. Her plots, characters and storyline zig-zags are interesting, but her dialog is often tedious.

Local readers can pretend we are in the British countryside where small towns and villages are teeming with weird murders and half the villagers are suspects.

While I won’t read from A to Y as millions have, I am a reluctant fan.

Don creates a sixteen-page survey hoping to eliminate all drinkers, smokers and late arriver s from possible dates. But the friend who passes out the surveys sends him a woman who drinks, smokes and isn’t punctual. Rosie comes late to their dinner and Don is alternately upset and entranced. He winds up trying to help her find her biological father and learning about how people find love.

Mazienis go Arctic

Jerome and April Mazienis visited Stockholm, Sweden, then traveled to Bergen, Norway, to catch an expedition boat for 12 days along the coast of Norway.

They stopped at 32 ports, crossed the Arctic Circle, visited the Russian border at Kirkenes, Norway, and also stopped in Tromso, where they visited the Arctic Cathedral for a midnight concert. Supper with a family at a Viking village was on the itinerary as well. The North Cape in Oksfkord was another stop, and they saw St. Olav’s grave at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondhiem. Northern Lights glowed in the dark skies and there were bad sea days with big waves. “It was a fantastic trip,” they reported, “like no other.”
