“COLOR, ART & ENERGY” Abstract works by Jen Sterling
OPENING: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 5-7PM
Color has always had a profound impact on Jen’s state of mind. Her inspiration can come from anywhere: a moment on the street, a shift in light, the glint off a black pearl. Jen’s goal is to spark energy in the viewer—to inspire boldness. Her paintings aren’t meant to match your couch. They’re meant to move you, to wake you up, to remind you that life is for feeling, stretching and fully living.

ANNAPOLIS ARTIST JEN STERLING BRINGS “COLOR, ART & ENERGY” TO EASTON IN SEPTEMBER
Annapolis-based abstract artist Jen Sterling will present her solo exhibition, Color, Art & Energy, at The Zebra Gallery in Easton from September 5-30. The show will feature her vivid, energetic compositions that use bold color and gesture to convey emotion, strength and empowerment.
Jen, who earned a degree in visual communications with a minor in psychology from George Washington University, spent more than 30 years leading creative agencies before focusing on a fine art career. Inspired by emotional landscapes, her works often begin with a single color choice and evolve into multi-layered acrylic pieces reflecting movement and feeling.
“I aim to evoke energy and enthusiasm from within, encouraging the viewer to act boldly. My artwork is created to instill a sense of strength and power—to awaken your mornings with a burst of vitality and refresh your senses after a tiring day.”
She describes her art as being less about matching décor and more about awakening the viewer. Her goal is to create pieces that spark energy, make an emotional connection and encourage confidence through color and form.
Her exhibition at The Zebra Gallery is one of several regional showcases for Jen, alongside upcoming shows this fall in Annapolis and Severna Park, among others. In addition to her work in the studio, she actively mentors emerging artists and contributes to the regional arts community.
For Jen, abstraction, color and movement are tools to communicate emotion in ways words cannot. Her exhibition in Easton offers viewers a chance to experience that philosophy firsthand. CS

Artistic Anniversary
Photography by Pamela Aquilani
TWO DECADES IN, GALLERY ONE HAS GROWN INTO A PROMINENT SPACE FOR ARTISTS AND ART LOVERS, WHERE COMMUNITY IS THE INSPIRATION AND THE CORNERSTONE
Tucked along Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View, Gallery One is marking a milestone of artistic expression, community connections and lasting influence. But before it was one of Sussex County’s most beloved cultural spaces celebrating two decades of success, it was a vision shared by a close-knit group of local watercolorists meeting in a library—artists who were careful not to spill paint on the library’s carpet.
The artists, part of the Bethany Beach Watercolor Society, began holding annual receptions to showcase their work. With every well-attended show, the dream of opening a dedicated gallery grew stronger. Eventually, it was decided: The first 16 artists to contribute financially would become the founding partners of a new venture—Gallery One. That founding spirit of collective effort and shared passion remains at the heart of the gallery’s success.
From the beginning, building awareness
was one of the biggest challenges. The artists painted at local events, joined community organizations like the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce, and reached out to the local media. Their efforts paid off. Soon, visitors beyond the Watercolor Society circle began discovering the gallery.
Though it started as a space focused on watercolor and representational work, the gallery quickly evolved. Its growth soon demanded a larger location, which allowed it to showcase non-partner artisans, expand
its reach and diversify its offerings. Today, Gallery One celebrates a wide range of media and styles—oil, acrylic, abstract, mixed media, pottery, jewelry, woodworking and more.
Commemorating its 20th anniversary this fall, Gallery One offers dynamically themed exhibits each month, while artist-led bus trips to major museum exhibitions connect the community to the broader art world. Events like “Art in the Yard” and partnerships with schools, local festivals and nonprofit organizations reflect the gallery’s commitment to outreach and education.
Throughout it all, the gallery remains a welcoming destination for visitors of all ages and backgrounds—many of whom return each month to experience what’s new and enjoy the beauty of the work on display.
For Jeanne Mueller, being a founding partner is a point of quiet pride. “We built something that reflects all of us,” she shares. “It’s not just about selling art—it’s about building community, supporting one another, and offering something meaningful for everyone who walks through the door.”
And that mission—to create a gallery with something for everyone—continues to shine, 20 years strong. CS

DUFFY’S LATEST BOOK SHARES STORIES OF COURAGE AND KINDNESS
Photography by Jill Jasuta
We caught up with Delmarva storyteller Jim Duffy as he was crossing the Shore promoting his latest book, Ordinary Heroes of Old Delmarva: Inspiring True Tales of Courage, Kindness, and Community. This is his sixth book published under the banner of Secrets of the Eastern Shore—all devoted to exploring travel and history on the peninsula.
AUTHORING PROWESS
Drawing on decades of local history and personal connection, Jim’s series of engaging and informative books invites readers to explore, appreciate and celebrate the Delmarva Peninsula.
Three Questions with Jim Duffy:
What’s the elevator pitch for your new book, Jim?
That subtitle says it all: “Inspiring True Tales of Courage, Kindness, and Community.” Every time we take a step today on Delmarva, we’re walking on footprints from days gone by. Sure, there are a lot of bad footprints: selfishness, greed, oppression, other vices. But there are also many good footprints: courage, kindness, community, other virtues. This book is about the good footprints.
Will readers be familiar with the “heroes” in the book?
And it’s about something else—how these good footprints don’t just point back in time. They point forward as well. Step into these footprints and you’ll see; they can point toward a path that helps us become better people and build better communities here in the 21st century. Mostly, no. There are a handful of famous people in this new one, but not many. The book is more focused on unsung heroes—ordinary people who did extraordinary things in Delmarva days gone by. Leaping into action during storms and shipwrecks. Reaching out with helping hands across social divides. Bringing neighbors together in times of need.
Could you give us a teaser about a favorite story?
There’s a wide range of topics, from a Girl Scout troop leader to an Underground Railroad hero, to a pioneering female scientist, to a Chinese laundryman. There are action heroes, too, like Thomas Scott of Snow Hill. Let’s try that one. That chapter takes you back to December 1869. A deep freeze descends on New York City. Ferry boats are crunching through ice on the Hudson River.
CRASH!
A tugboat collides with one of those ferries, nearly tipping it over. There’s a big gash under the water line, and frozen water rushes in. Hundreds of lives are on the line. Women screaming. Babies crying. Men panicking.
Wait, here comes another tug—this one captained by a man from the Eastern Shore town of Snow Hill. This is when the story starts to take a heroic turn. CS

Spirited Season
If you’re reading this, you made it! The packed beaches, bustling shops, long lines—and, gasp, the traffic—are finally all coming to a temporary halt, leaving us a few weeks of what we beach dwellers officially call “locals’ summer.” To celebrate, I decided to keep things, well, local!
As a resident and bartender based in Lewes, I have been fortunate enough to have tested some early “prototypes” of Dogfish Head’s spirits—created by Sam Calagione and his team—through my work at Lewes Oyster House. I even recall some of their much earlier spirits from back in 2012 (when I could finally drink legally). The evolution has been fascinating and enjoyable to watch and taste. After seeing their current full spirits line come to fruition, I couldn’t help but work with the products and share some recipes with you!
Before we start mixing, let’s just take a moment to highlight what Dogfish Head has boiling up in Milton, DE. Not only are they a world-class brewery, but they also took the philosophy that put their famous beers on the map and integrated it into a killer onsite distillery. Many large commercial producers buy their base spirits in bulk and often outsource certain processes like fermentation and aging. Dogfish Head spirits, on the other hand, are all made from scratch. We’re talking malts, mash, fermentation, distillation, aging and bottling—all in-house. Very impressive. By the way, someone tell Sam that I am officially proposing an update to their famous motto, because “Off-centered spirits for cocktail-centered people” has a nice ring to it, no?

BARREL HONEY DAIQUIRI
2½ oz DFH Barrel Honey Rum
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz simple syrup (2:1)
Pinch of salt
Combine all ingredients in a mixing tin, top with ice and shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds. Double strain into a chilled coupe. Repeat for best results. Don’t forget to garnish with a lime.
If you are familiar with my work and me, you know that I have an unhealthy obsession with daiquiris. My first thought after tasting any rum is, “But how would this taste in a daiquiri?” As it turns out, Barrel Honey Rum makes a hell of a daiquiri. More often than not, you’ll find that a classic daiquiri recipe sticks with 2 oz of rum, but many bartenders like myself choose to slightly up the quantity when using lighter rums. This allows the nuance and character to present itself fully in the finished product. This rum is sweet (slightly), subtle and tart. The honey is surprisingly present without being overbearing.
PEOPLE + PLACES coastal
EASTSIDE GIMLET
3 cucumber slices
8-10 mint leaves
2 oz DFH Compelling Gin
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz organic cane simple (2:1)
Throw the slices of cucumber into a tin, grab a muddler and smash them. Next, drop in the mint leaves. Now, add the rest of your ingredients and pack the tin with ice. Shake vigorously for 1012 seconds. Pull a modest mint bouquet (or if you’re like me, an audacious bouquet), place it on your palm and gently spank it a couple of times to release the oils. Use this to garnish the cocktail. Just don’t make it weird (unless you’re like me). Enjoy up or on ice.
The Eastside Gimlet, a modern classic created in 2004, is among the most refreshing cocktails I have had the privilege to enjoy. I particularly love this cocktail because it’s how I sell people who claim to “hate gin” on gin. Here’s what many drinkers don’t realize: There are so many gins, with an absurd amount of variation in flavor, aroma and character. Unlike sharp London dry styles (think Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay), Compelling Gin is a modern style that balances unique botanicals such as green cardamom, hibiscus, lime leaves and cinnamon. Combine this spirit with cucumber and mint, and you have what will become your new summer favorite. By the way, if you enjoy showing off to your friends like I do, just use a Y-peeler to shave long, thin strips of cucumber and dress the inside of the highball glass.
SMOOTH OPERATOR
10-12 blueberries
2 oz DFH Hull & Helm Whiskey
½ oz DFH Scull & Crossbones
½ oz lemon juice
¼ oz simple syrup (2:1)
Free throw 10-12 ripe blueberries into a mixing tin and smash them. Now, combine the rest of the ingredients in the tin, pack with ice and shake—smoothly—for 10-12 seconds. Double strain into a chilled rocks glass over ice. Garnish with dehydrated citrus (I use blood orange) and skewer some extra berries while you’re at it.
This one is a recent creation by yours truly. Once I had the chance to try the Scull & Crossbones aperitif, I knew that it would marry well with the Hull & Helm Whiskey. Scull & Crossbones comes in at 25% ABV, which is very drinkable. I find it similar to a light amaro like Montenegro or Nonino, but slightly drier. The bitterness is pleasant and forgiving, which makes this a great introduction to amaro and other bitter liqueurs if you are unfamiliar.
So, what are you waiting for? You can find these bottles locally at your favorite liquor store. And while you’re at it, take a night to go visit Chesapeake & Maine in Rehoboth. Sit at the bar and behold—you’ll find talented bartenders and a selection of fantastic cocktails made with the same offcentered spirit that has made Dogfish Head famous worldwide. CS

JLAM BRINGS ICONIC SEASIDE LIVING TO LEWES WITH LIGHTKEEPER’S VILLAGE A SINGLE-FAMILY, LONG-TERM LEASE COMMUNITY REDEFINING COASTAL COTTAGE LIVING
Written by Kristen Hampshire
Coveted rental homes along the Eastern Shore, particularly in Delaware, have become a rare catch given an accelerated demand for yearround leases and limited options. “Long-term lease options are hard to come by and highquality homes for rent are nearly impossible to find,” says Doug Motley, Managing Principal at Jack Lingo Asset Management (JLAM), developer of Lightkeeper’s Village in Lewes.
The single-family, upscale build-for-rent community fills a growing gap for coastal cottage living, offering flexibility and lifestyle amenities that appeal to those who might have homes in multiple locations.
“There is an influx of people who rent by choice,” says Nick Hammonds, the Managing
“There is an influx of people who rent by choice. Lightkeeper’s Village brings elevated living to the yearround rental market with a single-family, cottage-style concept that we have not seen in our area.”
— NICK HAMMONDS
Principal at JLAM who is overseeing operations and project management.
“Lightkeeper’s Village brings elevated living to the year-round rental market with a singlefamily, cottage-style concept that we have not seen in our area.”
No Compromises
Lightkeeper’s Village borrows beach-house tradition from coastal getaways that dotted iconic East Coast seaside towns like Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. “It’s a modern take on timeless coastal living,” Motley says of the community’s inspiration.
The layout of a single-family home appeals to residents who appreciate having their own outdoor spaces, along with resort amenities and concierge services they might not otherwise access in a rental.
“One of the hallmarks of all our communities is delivering higher-end amenities that promote an active lifestyle,” says Hammonds, pointing to premium features such as a fully equipped fitness center, elevated pool area, clubhouse with gathering space and a juice/coffee bar, expansive green spaces, walking paths and fire pits.
The goal is to create a year-round rental option without compromises. “Lightkeeper’s Village offers coastal cottage living with the walkability and park space you don’t find in single-family homes in this area,” Motley says. “We’re creating a true sense of place and convenience here. Early demand and inquiries tell us future residents value the blend of privacy, amenities, and lifestyle that makes this community unlike anything else on the coast.”
Easy Living
Efficiently spaced cottage homes in Lightkeeper’s Village are thoughtfully staggered to provide privacy and designed with one, two or three bedrooms. “The neighborhood blends clean architectural touches,” says Hammonds, noting the homes’ contemporary interiors and character—a departure from typical, homogenous rental stock.
JLAM brought in Union Studio from Providence, RI (land planning and architecture) and Davis, Bowen & Fiedel from Milford, DE (civil engineering) to the design team. JLAM also partnered with Schell Brothers to serve as the project builder and help bring the vision to life.
Attention to detail extends to how the homes will allow residents to interact with the community’s amenities.
“While the homes are designed with front entries, we considered how residents will live and the conveniences they will want, such as parking in the back to enter with groceries and accessing a courtyard with green space,” Hammonds says of the intentional layout.
Combining the ease of leasing and the feel of a true neighborhood appeals to a variety of residents. “Whether you’re retiring, relocating or simply looking for flexibility without compromise, you can find an effortless, elevated coastal lifestyle here,” Motley adds.
Construction on the property is underway to accommodate new residents in the spring of 2026.
Hammonds says, “For JLAM, this is more than just another neighborhood. It’s a special community that blends timeless design with modern convenience, created to meet the evolving housing needs of the Eastern Shore.”

JESSICA AND LEE WILLIAMSON
STIRRED PASSION INTO A KEY LIME PIE RECIPE AND FULFILLED A MISSION TO PACK AN EASTERN SHORE VACATION INTO EVERY BITE
Written by Kristen Hampshire
Photography by Pamela Aquilani
Not too tart, not too sweet and with a graham cracker crust that can hold its own—Jessica and Lee Williamson tasted and tweaked recipes by the dozen in search of a key lime pie that captures a beach vacation in every bite.
“We love spending time on the ocean, and when my mom made us this dessert while we were in the Outer Banks, we’d never had anything like it,” Jessica recalls. The refreshing tang sparked their journey to create authentic pies—without preservatives—that soon evolved into Coastal Key Lime Pie.
What began as late-night bake sessions grew into a business with more than 30 retail and hospitality partners across Delaware. Their recipe quickly converted skeptics into fans. “It’s an unforgettable taste,” Lee says.
After test-marketing at the Milton Farmers Market in 2023, the Williamsons expanded distribution by offering samples to local shops, including Tomato Sunshine and
Lloyd’s Market. The 10-by-10-foot tent where they first sold pies became a fixture for locals and vacationers, and the early response gave them confidence to push forward.
They later moved production to a commercial kitchen at Delaware Technical Community College before establishing a flagship facility in Seaford. An EDGE grant helped fund equipment and delivery capability, fueling growth and enabling the couple to balance efficiency with the homemade quality that defines their brand.
Today, Jessica, Lee and their small team manage operations, deliveries and pop-up sales. Their newest creations include gluten-free pies and slices dipped in Ghirardelli dark chocolate. Online ordering adds to the reach, with pies shipped for holidays and gifts.
“We continue to come up with fresh creations within the theme of Coastal Key Lime Pie,” Jessica says. CS

Investing with Purpose
ALLEGIANT PRIVATE WEALTH PROVIDES A FULL-SERVICE APPROACH TO ITS CLIENTS AND COMMUNITY—INCLUDING HOLISTIC FINANCIAL PLANNING, LIFESTYLE AND WELLNESS BENEFITS
ellness and balance extend far beyond fiscal fitness and a diversified portfolio for Christine Selzer and the Allegiant Private Wealth team.
“We are so much more than investment professionals to the clients and communities we serve,” says Christine, a Certified Financial Planner™ and the lead Private Wealth Advisor at Allegiant Private Wealth (APW).
Rooted in Ocean City for more than 30 years, Christine has navigated market cycles from the dot-com era to the 2008 financial crisis and beyond. Her expertise has earned her a spot on Forbes 2025 list of Best-in-State Women Wealth Advisors in Maryland.
The APW team brings a collective 90-plus
years of combined experience and includes her husband, Brian Selzer, CRPC, Brody Grove, CFP, Business Development Specialist Hunter Selzer and support staff members Kendall Holmes and Melanie Konoski.
Christine’s emphasis on a long-term, relationship-driven approach blends traditional planning values with modern tools to enhance client service. And a holistic approach to wealth planning and living a full life in every way has inspired a robust series of community-centered occasions, from yoga nights to sip-and-paint parties to vision board creation events.
APW dedicated a welcoming space in its Ocean Gateway office to let clients and associates experience the team’s well-rounded approach to finances and lifestyle planning.
Christine says, “As Certified Financial Planners, our work includes estate and tax planning services, so we offer a full toolbox and provide a big-picture approach. This extends to life and how clients want to spend their days.”
She adds, “While growing my career, I spent a lot of time serving the community, and now we are finding creative ways to give back to clients.”
Connected to Strategy
Clients’ lives change, as do market cycles, and the economy is subject to a deep range of influences—the importance of planning remains consistent. By connecting in meaningful ways with clients—from involvement in local groups to discussions about “what’s next”—APW can tailor comprehensive and personal strategies.
Importantly, Christine notes that APW manages all assets in-house to effectively customize portfolios.
“We have full administrative support and CFP professionals, so clients can rely on us to guide the next generations of their families,” Christine adds, emphasizing the practice’s all-encompassing nature.
This is a value she shares; Christine and Brian raised their two grown sons on the Eastern Shore. “We love that our clients can walk in the door, do business locally and put a face to a name,” she says.
Equally important is APW’s designations in multiple states so clients can “travel” with the firm, knowing that the personable, white-glove service they experience in Maryland crosses borders.
Planning for Life
“So many people dedicate their time to accumulating their wealth but then they don’t always relax into it,” says Christine, explaining the impetus behind APW’s expanding outreach. “What’s most important to keep in mind is: What is the meaning of your wealth? How do you want to spend it and preserve it?”
For some clients, this means volunteering more. For others, traveling the world. “We love creating a budget for clients so they can see different places,” she says. “And they send us pictures while they travel, which is really a big compliment.”
With a range of lifestyle goals and expectations, being able to trust an experienced financial and wealth management team is vital, Christine says.
The popularity of APW’s yoga series has prompted more classes being offered at APW’s office, and Christine is excited about how a vision board night will help clients process and prioritize how they want to spend their time and money.
Christine says, “We want to give our clients a safe space to enjoy life and enjoy their wealth.”

Tilghman Orthodontics
DR. MICHAEL TILGHMAN
Tilghman Orthodontics is renowned for delivering high-quality orthodontic care, dedicated customer service and modern solutions that create confident, healthy smiles.
One of the practice’s most popular and successful treatments is an in-house clear aligner program called Smiles Correct. Built on 3D printing technology and direct clinical oversight, Smiles Correct reflects how aligner therapy has evolved: it is effective in many cases and often complements braces in a blended plan designed for efficiency and comfort. Here’s what that looks like in practice: the team prints precise models that map each small movement, fabricates custom trays from those models and monitors progress at regular visits to keep treatment on track. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, treatment begins with a comprehensive exam, digital imaging and a discussion of goals and lifestyle. For some patients, braces remain the best way to establish foundational alignment quickly. For others, aligners can carry the entire case start to finish. Many benefit from a hybrid sequence—braces to start, aligners to finish—to fine-tune tooth position and align the bite.
Direct doctor supervision is central to the process. Every Smiles Correct case is planned and guided by Dr. Michael Tilghman, whose step-by-step direction ensures movements are safe, predictable and tailored to the individual. That same attention extends to retainer and braces strategies and long-term follow up so results last.
The outcome is practical, personalized care that meets patients where they are and moves them toward an excellent result with clarity about options at each step.
Quality care, experience and thoughtful innovation are what set Tilghman Orthodontics apart from other practices in the area. CS

PERDUE FARMS
For Jim and Jan Perdue, their commitment to philanthropy is not built on accolades, but on deep-rooted care for their community. They were humbled to learn they were being recognized by Coastal Style magazine readers as Best Philanthropists in Wicomico County.
This recognition reflects not only their personal generosity; it represents a legacy and commitment at Perdue Farms to giving back to the communities where the company’s associates live, work, and raise their families. It’s also a reflection of how the company lives its value of stewardship.
“This honor really belongs to the thousands of Perdue associates and partners who support and strengthen our communities every day in Wicomico County and across our company
footprint,” said Jim Perdue, third-generation chairman of the family-owned, 105-year-old company founded in Salisbury.
Giving back has always been important to Jim and Jan and has long been a part of the Perdue Farms’ culture. That tradition continues today through the company’s “Delivering Hope To Our Neighbors®” outreach to improve quality of life and build strong communities.
The philanthropic contributions of the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation help strengthen communities by focusing on education, agriculture, the environment, health and social services, public safety and fighting hunger and poverty.
The company helps millions of its neighbors struggling with food insecurity through ongoing
protein donations to local food banks and pantries, including through the Maryland Food Bank in Salisbury, where Jim and Jan volunteer their time.
The company culture also inspires associates to give back through the power of volunteerism and engage in causes that support their neighbors in ways meaningful to them.
“My grandfather started this company with a simple goal: to do right by people,” said Jim. “That spirit of responsibility and compassion has guided us for more than a century. Giving back isn’t something we do because it looks good— it’s something we do because it’s the right thing to do.” CS

A BAYSIDE HOME
AFTER MONTHS OF SITE PREPARATION, CONSTRUCTION IN GLEN RIDDLE YIELDS
A TRANQUIL WATERFRONT HOME
Written by Kristen Hampshire
Photography by Refined Capture
Navigating a floodplain to situate a home on limited buildable land can involve pilings, ground-level garages and of course, all the insurance that comes along with waterfront lots. In the Kings’ case, it meant constructing an island of their own—and a moat of sorts with a driveway bridge to cross a three-foothigh bulkhead.
The site preparation alone was a multifaceted construction project. But Mike Poole is accustomed to these circumstances— specifically, on the property next door to the Kings’ site in Berlin’s Glen Riddle community.
“We could have built below grade and put in pilings, but their cars would have been below the flood level,” says Mike, founder and owner of Poole Contracting & Consulting. He has been steering Eastern Shore projects for more than 25 years.
The Kings realized the process of building their full-time, forever home would require thoughtful planning and the most soughtafter resource: time. They didn’t rush it; they secured the lot about five years ago.
“We had a condo in Glen Riddle for a good 12 years, and we really like the community,” says Denise King, pointing to the property’s golf course and marina. “We walked around
all the time, keeping an eye on lots that were available.”
They happened upon this waterfront spot on the Isle of Wight Bay.
“We knocked on the door of the property next to it to find out who had built their home,” says Scott King of connecting with Poole Contracting & Consulting. The couple was confident their vision was possible since this home, too, sat on a raised foundation supported by a retaining wall.
“It’s quite involved,” Scott says. “But you’re sitting right on the water, and that’s exactly what we hoped for.”
Laying the Groundwork
Along the Shore, sometimes the most complex construction is not what you see—it’s what lies beneath. The Kings got the best of both. A resilient support was developed to sustain a four-bedroom, 3½-bathroom residence with custom craftsmanship, from detailed millwork to lifestyle-driven features.
Mike describes the site prep, which took three months compared to a typical two-week lot clearing: “We built a bulkhead all the way around the property, so when we have storms, the water can fill into a ‘moat,’” he says.
Next, pilings were installed, and then crews completed infrastructure such as sewer, water and electricity. Finally came layers of compacted fill dirt—all of this before the home’s foundation.
At Home in the Kitchen
Harmony in the kitchen flows from the wood-encased range hood that plays off the island base cabinets and picks up flecks of bronze in the Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops. A warm white covers the backsplash and cabinetry—and there’s nothing stark about it.
Functional and welcoming, the kitchen as a perennial gathering space embodies the Kings’ intentions for the home as a place to share with family and friends. Scott says, “We feel at peace here. It’s relaxing and a culmination of a lot of hard work from everyone involved in the project.”
Project manager and coordinator Corey Leggour expertly directed all the trim and finish details throughout the home, including several custom features of the kitchen.
NATURAL SETTING
A wall of windows invites in light and views of wildlife on the bay, while a subdued color palette throughout the home promotes peaceful living.
Timeless Living
The Kings’ decision to live in the home full time informed design decisions. They aimed for a coastal aesthetic, but nothing too beachy, avoiding vacation cottage kitsch that might be better suited for a getaway home.
Walls are washed in contemporary neutrals like Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige, Waterscape, Repose Gray and Rainwashed. Denise also selected creamy foundation furnishings from Casual Designs Furniture and Kendall Home Furnishings, with a mind to incorporate colorful accessories that can be easily changed out, such as pillows.
More than Doors
Rather than a standard powder room door that, when open, would create an obstacle, the Kings decided on a chevron barn door that opens from
the center—a custom piece that solved the problem of not having enough space for a full, one-way sliding door. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, a pantry door doubles as art with its sandblasted glass finish and etched image of an egret.
Views for Days
The Kings opted for casement windows that offer cleaner sight lines and open 90 degrees—another way to welcome the outdoors in. And rather than flanking the living room fireplace with bookshelves, window seats make way for more windows, including dual transoms that maximize natural light. The couple also chose fixtures with care to prevent obstructing views, such as a bubble-inspired chandelier in the foyer.
Views were a priority, so the painstaking site prep process was well worth the outcome. “We look out from our bedroom to views you’d get from a cruise ship,” Scott relates.
Denise adds, “It’s not just the water; it’s all the wildlife and the crabbing boats that are out early in the morning.”
Each of the three levels is appointed with an outdoor space. On the main deck, a phantom vinyl porch enclosure system from Screenmobile offers protection from the elements without restricting waterfront breezes. CS

ELEGANT DETAILS ENCHANT IN THIS THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED ANNAPOLIS FARMHOUSE
Written by Kristen Hampshire
Photography by Eric Tate, Peak Visuals
White weathered brick and waterfront views—sophisticated details, but nothing too pretentious. This is an Annapolis family home in Fishing Creek Farm, situated on a peninsula near Thomas Point where the South River meets the Chesapeake Bay.
The owners enlisted the help of Stephanie Cook, a partner at Speight Cook Studio Architects, to realize a vision that moved away from a driftwood-farmhouse aesthetic and toward features that exude elegance.
Exterior details include graceful arches, nickel-gap siding and brick corbeling. Inside, every space has a purpose, yet another departure from an overly open floor plan. There’s a defined dining room, morning room, moody lounge, scullery and butler’s pantry. Let’s not forget the back stairway that cascades from the second floor into the kitchen—the owners might have thought of it as a “secret passageway” while growing up.
INVITING SPACES
Warm white hues echo the home’s white weathered brick exterior and create a refined, welcoming backdrop for gatherings.
There’s hearth and heart in this kitchen, where a range is within view of the living room fireplace—symmetry in white oak. Warm white punctuated with wood detail is clean and down to earth. There’s juxtaposition: a functional cooking island grounded in oak cabinets with a sharp edge, and a gathering island with a waterfall countertop treatment. Stephanie says, “White is a traditional kitchen color for those who don’t want to go bold with color, and wood brings a soft aesthetic to a timeless selection.”
DINING DETAILS
There’s a purpose for every nook and cranny, including a picturesque breakfast nook and a comfortable dining room area dedicated to entertaining guests.
This is a house designed to nurture stories— those that provoke laughter, those etched in memory. It’s refined but not stuffy, traditional yet clean-lined, and timeless in every way. For Stephanie, the creative lift introduced an often bypassed yet practically ancient medium: brick.
“It’s exciting to develop details and ways of interpreting design with a very traditional material,” she relates, calling attention to the craftsmanship in this roughly 5,000-squarefoot home. Every decision, from layout to selections, was grounded in lifestyle and a way of being.
Stephanie says, “Elegant is the description that I turn to with this home because we were always seeking to make it a little elevated without an overuse of finishes. In some places, it’s clean and sparse and nothing is overgilded.”

Breakfast Nook. “How do you eat?” is a question Stephanie asks clients in order to appropriately configure dining spaces. In this case, a nearly all-glass nook jutting from the kitchen is a morning room for casual family meals. It’s not just for morning dining, though they refer to the space as such for its energizing, sunlit feel. A formal dining room was established as a dedicated space for entertaining. And dual islands in the kitchen offer plenty of room for everyday hanging out.
ELEVATED ACCENTS
Every detail contributes to the graceful, elegant atmosphere of this Fishing Creek Farm gem, designed by Stephanie Cook.
Details, Details. Not one overlooked. On the exterior, recessed downspouts offer a “sharp and crisp” finish, Stephanie says. Gabled edges with stepped-out brick meet the roof overhang and deliver a seamless line. “The white weathered brick is classic and fresh,” she says. A rounded water table, managing runoff, adds visual interest to function.
Mastering Elegance. The owners’ suite features a cathedral board-and-beam ceiling and bumpout bay window in monochromatic warm whites. The ceiling decrescendos in scale and shape toward woodland views. “There is a lot of interest and depth without being flashy,” says Stephanie, reiterating a desire to showcase subtlety.
Hide in the Scullery. Tucking away kitchen prep tasks, storing appliances and staging catering can happen in a scullery—another kind of “back staircase” without the steps. The scullery is combined with a pantry, because, Stephanie says, “You can never have enough storage.” CS
BECKER MORGAN GROUP’S RESIDENTIAL STUDIO EXCELS WITH SITE-SPECIFIC, CLIENTCENTERED ARCHITECTURE THAT BALANCES COASTAL INNOVATION WITH ENDURING CHARACTERISTICS
Written by Kristen Hampshire
Designing Minds
Rooted in Eastern Shore living, Chris Pattey is an informative design voice and pioneer of beachside architecture along the Maryland and Delaware coasts—and beyond, from the Carolinas and Florida to locations across the country.
Headquartered in Salisbury, MD, Becker Morgan Group operates from inside a historically preserved building on West Main Street, serving as a visual mainstay and nod
to the firm’s commitment to the community.
Chris, Associate AIA and Residential Practice Area Leader at Becker Morgan, has been on the front lines of the evolving coastal development along the Shore for more than 35 years. His career at Becker Morgan began in 1987 with an internship in college. Today, his thoughtful beach-house designs punctuate the landscape with custom homes that embody what living on the Eastern Shore represents.
Site-specific design is crucial.
“Not only are there easements and
regulations to navigate, but there are also space constraints now that the Eastern Shore has grown into a popular beach destination for full- and part-time residents,” Chris points out.
Customization looks different for every homeowner, adds Jason Pearce, AIA, LEED AP and Senior Associate and Architect at Becker Morgan. “Regardless of the style, we put our heart and soul into accomplishing an architectural design that is detailed and creative and that stands out,” he says.

Trust in Timelessness
The firm has grown exponentially over the years, yet the residential design studio experience remains highly personalized, collaborative and approachable.
Expertise and trust are the intangibles Chris and Jason deliver.
Their distinct perspectives and design approaches to coastal architecture accommodate clients’ varying individual tastes. “A good design doesn’t need a stylistic label,” says Chris, relating the significance of architecture that is on point today and intended to sustain its relevance for generations.
“Timelessness is the defining element of design,” he emphasizes. “And we also want to address gravitational pulls from clients to appeal to their aesthetic preferences and build an environment that’s suited to them functionally and personally.”
Jason’s tenure spans 30 years, and the team works in tandem to offer clients distinct designs that speak to a diverse portfolio of work. This ranges from clean-lined modern to reclaimed barn designs, East Coast traditional and spaces enveloped in glass.
FORM MEETS FUNCTION
A balance of lifestyle and aesthetic creates the ideal residential design. Chris and Jason boast decades of experience that benefits each client’s unique situation.
Site-Specific & Client-Centric
Across the board, Chris and Jason’s residential designs are a culmination of site-specific constraints, a lifestyle-driven layout program, sought-after amenities and clients’ unique preferences.
Location launches a creative process that unfolds into a place-based plan engineered to withstand the Eastern Shore environment. Functionality is an equal priority—as are stunning views. “Chris and I develop strong connections with our clients and engage in ongoing discussions to ensure designs suit their lifestyles,” Jason relates.
Jason describes Seaside Serenity, the home that garnered a Regal Award for Best Delaware Custom Home of the Year by the Home Builders Association of Delaware. The judges noted its architectural excellence and its embodiment of coastal living. The home features a sunlit, custom steel staircase that connects multiple levels.

Under Chris’s direction, Becker Morgan earned the Best of Houzz awards for Design and Service, affirming excellence in client-centric, aesthetic architectural design. He’s known as a storyteller in residential architecture— and for inventive features such as over-scaled columns, quintessential cedar shake siding, bold use of color and rich millwork. No detail is overlooked.
“By manipulating scale, incorporating embellishments, introducing different roof lines and colors, I bring a ‘flair’ to coastal architecture design that clients seek when they partner with us,” Chris says.
Meanwhile, Jason sometimes borrows cues from clients’ Eastern Shore experiences, whether from a favorite dining space or resort. A versatile approach is key. “We’re never creating the same design twice,” he says.
Design, Well-Traveled
With their overlapping design philosophies and individual touches, Chris and Jason have defined the Becker Morgan residential studio’s forward-thinking reputation during the past three decades. They’ve established the firm’s legacy as an innovative, full-service collaborator that is shaping the built environment along the Eastern Shore. Meanwhile, their truly personal approach has carried their work far beyond beachfront sites to grand estates with multiple buildings, multi-generational horse farms, riverfront enclaves and more.
Its broad project portfolio speaks to Becker Morgan residential studio’s expansive capabilities.
Chris reiterates, “Good design is not constrained to a category. Outstanding architecture is functional, beautiful and unique.” CS
