Let There Be Light!

MODERN LIGHTING SYSTEMS OFFER A HOST OF BENEFITS, INCLUDING SECURITY, ENERGY SAVINGS AND HEALTHIER LIVING

Did you know that a recent study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Americans spend an average of 87% of their day inside? This presents a critical issue, as our natural body clocks are set to the sun. By spending much of our time indoors, our circadian rhythms can be dramatically thrown off, which can result in poor sleep, irritable moods and a lack of productivity—for starters.

At Overture, we design home lighting systems that can automatically simulate natural light throughout the course of the day, with cooler, brighter colors keeping you focused during the day and warm, dimmer colors allowing you to relax comfortably in the evening.

Lighting control ranges from a simple, in-wall dimmer to a fully automated whole-house system with dimmer panels and low voltage in-wall keypads. Lighting zones can be easily programmed for automated “turn-on” and “turn-off” events and schedules. Automated lighting also includes fully controllable scenes, color temperatures and light-color variabilities. Lighting control can be accomplished from controllers in your home, as well as from your phone anywhere in the world.

Today’s lighting fixtures project a greater amount of light while consuming far less electricity than previous fixtures and bulbs. Modern light fixtures can produce thousands of different light colors as well, such as red, blue, green or white, upon command. We routinely install and program systems that have interior lights come on at sunset for ambiance and illuminate hallways throughout the home.

Outdoor low-voltage lighting is a major feature to showcase your home and Overture carries several manufacturers of landscape lighting. Modern LED landscape lights can be dimmed as well and come in thousands of different fixtures and looks.

Exterior lighting systems can be set to illuminate at sunset and cease at sunrise, all while maintaining exact times for each event throughout the year.

Lighting, both inside and outside of your home, is a crucial element in providing ambiance, security, convenience and energy savings—all while allowing you to lead a healthier lifestyle.

At Overture, we take great pride in designing and installing the appropriate system for our clients—while exceeding their expectations.

SPIRALIS GALLERY IN EASTON SHOWCASES THE WORKS OF ALMA ROBERTS, WHOSE VISUAL STORYTELLING PROMPTS IMPORTANT DIALOGUE

“Nothing changes the world without human conversation, and we need to learn how to dialogue effectively,” says Gail Patterson, a collector who opened Spiralis Gallery in Easton to create a space for just that—for idea sharing and broaching tough topics with a spirit of hope.

“Art is an excellent vehicle for doing that,” says Gail, who is drawn to story-driven art and fills her gallery with Afro-Caribbean pieces that offer a fresh, contemporary and inclusive voice for the Eastern Shore.

“Art isn’t like a couch—it’s not designed to match the curtains or to be just a thing on the wall,” Gail says. “It’s a piece of the artist’s soul.”

Baltimore-based abstract expressionist painter Alma Roberts will open her window to the world at Spiralis beginning Friday, July 11, with an opening reception and a meet-theartist experience from 5-7 p.m. Her exhibition,

titled “Harboring,” will run through Aug. 31 with an artist talk on July 26 at 2 p.m.

“Harboring” carries a rich double meaning, blending the physical act of providing shelter with a more abstract notion of concealing thoughts or intentions. This layered meaning deepens the emotional, societal and social well, suggesting protection and secrecy, safety and suspicion.

“It provides a window into Alma’s viewpoints on life and the issues that impact it,” Gail says of Alma’s evocative, story-driven art and how she conveys important messages in a culturally grounded manner.

Real Stories of Hope

Alma grew up the youngest of nine children. Her father was a charcoal portrait artist, but she did not know this to be the case until much later in life. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service to provide for the family, so

Alma was raised with a notion of her father’s artistic talent but no real exposure to it.

She found her own way in storytelling, writing poems and short stories and eventually founding a group called New Breezes to promote other Black and Brown writers, mostly from the mid-Atlantic region.

When she adopted her four-year-old son, she says, “I did what my father did, and I gave up writing to raise this wonderful child.”

Then a couple of decades later, “out of the blue,” she heard her father’s voice. He had passed away, but she felt his presence and encouragement to “pick up a paintbrush and paint with your left hand.” (They shared a southpaw preference.)

So, she did. And then she began painting with her right hand, and soon her art “exploded,” Alma relates.

She is self-taught and her visual storytelling is grounded in conveying hope in darkness.

THE ARTS

“I paint my way through life,” Alma says. She is a proud Baltimore native who is integrated into the community—its history, its present and its future.

Alma is a co-founder of the Directors and Collectors Art Salon and a founding member of the Joshua Johnson Council at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Her solo exhibits have intrigued audiences at the Baltimore City Hall Galleries and the James E. Lewis Museum of Art at Morgan State University.

She says, “I am an activist and an optimist, and every time I step up to a blank canvas, I enter spaces that bring me into contact with different realms.”

She paints her emotions and her interpretations, and she paints subject matter that is “beautiful or sometimes unsightly and unfathomable.”

Alma gets real. It’s not always pretty, but the messages always carry hope.

“They’re stories I’m living or that I have

lived, and messages I want to leave for my son and grandchildren,” she relates.

Gail says, “The way Alma conveys her messages using art as the vehicle is very consistent with what Spiralis is trying to do— the way she promotes hope in her art while still engaging in difficult conversations. If the world is going to change and have hope, we have to confront painful truths, and she does that effectively.”

“Art isn’t like a couch—it’s not designed to match the curtains or to be just a thing on the wall,” Gail says.
“It’s a piece of the artist’s soul.”

Full Circle

The exhibition’s title, “Harboring,” reflects a tension between tragedy and celebration. While it honors the Baltimore Harbor, it also acknowledges its history as a landing site for slave ships. “There is a duality,” Gail notes.

Alma says, “I have a love affair with the city, but what spurred the painting is when David Bramble, a Black man born and raised in Baltimore, purchased the Inner Harbor. I’ve known David’s mother and knew David from a distance growing up.”

She reflects on her ancestors. “The Harbor is where we came, where we landed in this part of Maryland,” Alma relates, calling Bramble’s role a full-circle moment. “We now own that and celebrate who we are.”

Her piece “Eulogy” tells the story of Alma’s African ancestors, “stolen from the Motherland, and those who died during the horrors of Middle Passage, and the families and communities that were left to grieve the kidnapping of their loved ones.”

It honors enslaved people who were killed through barbaric acts, including lynching. “This painting is a eulogy to praise their brilliance, resilience and courageous fortitude,” she writes in a statement.

Always, there’s hope.

And often a full circle, including back to Easton for the show at Spiralis. Alma reflects on working at a local hospital and discovering the Tidewater Inn, where she would steal away on weekends for respite. “I’d sit on the front porch, and it was my getaway place,” she says. Expressing her gratitude for showing her work at Spiralis, she says, “It’s fortuitous.” CS

STEPHEN BREHM’S OIL PAINTINGS CAPTURE

NATURE’S UNSCRIPTED MOVEMENTS AND SERENE SUBTLETIES

The Eastern Shore’s lively surf and dynamic waves offer endless material for fine artist Stephen Brehm, a longtime member of the Rehoboth Art League. Drawn to ocean scenes, he is intrigued by the interplay of light and shadow, of man and nature.

Inspirational settings are integral to Stephen’s creative process. His goal: to capture a gesture or object with as few brushstrokes as possible, focusing on essential elements that bring a subject to life.

“My evolution as an artist has led me to capture scenes with a limited amount of detail and fewer brush strokes,” Stephen shares. “For me, it’s all about keeping it loose and lively, not getting too stuck on details— and about creating focal points.”

INTENTLY FOCUSED

Stephen’s approach to painting is rooted in the simplicity and immediacy of capturing light and shadow through loose, direct and vibrant brushwork.

Arguably, Stephen’s works are brimming with detail in the way colors organically create movement and emotive layers. Stephen speaks to how he translates what he sees in the natural world to the canvas, “softening edges” and exercising artistic license to interpret landscape and seascape scenes.

Much of his work is inspired by the local coastline, he says.

“There is a nostalgic quality,” says Stephen, remarking on the mid-Atlantic’s earthy green waters and waves that break right on the beach. “It makes for interesting seascapes because there is a little more drama.”

The swell and collapse create swashbuckling scenes that Stephen captures in his oil paintings. He is an artist who paints en plein air when possible. “I used to take a fishing rod along to the beach and now I take my easel,” he quips.

Early Influences

A life of travel informs the perspective Stephen brings to the painter’s palette. Born in Verdun, France, he spent his younger years—during his father’s military career—moving with his family to Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico, eventually relocating to the United States.

THE ARTS coastal

“My father was also a fisherman, and we always had a boat,” Stephen relates. “He was drawn to the water’s edge like many of us. It’s healing, relaxing and some of us are fortunate to live close to it.”

Stephen’s home base today is in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on a country property along the Conestoga River, which eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay. For as long as he can remember, an annual trip to Delaware’s Dewey Beach has been a summer tradition.

PAINTING WITH PURPOSE

“There is something about the simplicity and the look of fresh, wet paint that moves my artist soul.”

By traveling to the Eastern Shore, across the country, and all over the world, Stephen has developed a profound appreciation for the land and sea.

He attended Millersville University where he studied painting and figure drawing, and before committing to a full-time art career, he worked as a 3D animator, graphic artist and courtroom sketch artist. One of his pieces for a national court case landed on NBC’s The Today Show

By 2007, Stephen decided to paint

full-time. He stopped at a local art store and found a book on Frederick Waugh’s seascapes. Ultimately, this triggered what has evolved into an 18-year career teeming with accolades.

“There is something about the look of fresh wet paint that moves my artist soul,” he says.

Capturing the Essence

Lately, Stephen says he is interested in painting a particular subject: the concrete observation towers along the coast, built from 1939 to 1942 during World War II to defend the Delaware Bay and River from a potential German attack. (Shots were never fired.)

“I’m very intrigued by the towers,” he says. “They are mysterious, and after all these years, they’re still standing. I imagine what it was like when they were manned.”

Stephen is completing a series of tower paintings, mainly depicting those in north Rehoboth Beach in the Gordons Pond area.

Stephen’s work is consistently shown at Rehoboth Art League shows, the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Art Show in Lewes, Peninsula Gallery in Lewes and the Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival.

He hopes his pieces offer a glimpse into the spirit of ever-evolving landscapes. “I’m driven to capture the energy and essence of my surroundings,” he says. CS

Dare to Dream

PLAYFUL, DREAMLIKE WONDERLANDS CAPTIVATE YOUNG AND OLD, BROUGHT TO LIFE BY THE TALENTS OF GABRIEL LEHMAN

“I create entire worlds where my characters can play, explore and live out every childhood dream without boundaries.”

Innocence, exploration and personal introspection are all part of the visual journey one experiences when observing the inspiring works of Gabriel Lehman. The highly acclaimed artist from Indiana will call Easton home in mid-July when his show, “A Bird’s Eye View,” opens at The Zebra Gallery. The exhibit’s opening reception is set for Friday, July 18 from 5-7 p.m.

Inspired by legendary artists such as René Magritte and Dr. Seuss, Gabriel’s whimsical works of illustrative surrealism portray playful, dreamlike landscapes. His paintings effortlessly evoke senses of childlike wonder, curiosity and discovery.

“I create entire worlds where my characters can play, explore and live out every childhood dream without boundaries,” Gabriel says. Despite a lifelong struggle with dyslexia, Gabriel found his voice through visual storytelling—and he openly shares the difficulty of his youth to inspire today’s students.

“Sandbar Horizon” 30X60

“Traditional learning was torture for me. Now, I speak to students about different types of intelligence and encourage them to embrace their own unique strengths,” he says.

“A Bird's Eye View” will feature his fanciful, dreamlike landscapes with a particular emphasis on clouds, imbuing a sense of joy and wonder into his art. Gabriel is a self-taught artist who started painting in 2009 after a 14-year career in construction with a focus on flooring. Despite not having any formal training, Gabriel’s unique perspective and whimsical style quickly gained him a following.

Gabriel is also offering painting classes from July 14-19 to share the secrets to his gorgeous clouds and fantastic creatures. Classes offered include “Three-Color Clouds,” where students will learn how to capture the softness, depth and movement of clouds. The “Sunset Skies” class shares how to paint breathtaking sunsets on 16” by 20” canvases. The “Rays of Light” class guides students through techniques for making clouds look like they could float right off the canvas. Painters of all skill levels are welcome to participate in each of the classes. Call 410-253-9131 or email thezebragallery@gmail.com to express interest in registering. CS

Bank With The Best! Bank With The Best!

Painting Persona

THE POWERFUL WORKS OF EVAN FITZGERALD FEATURED AT THE ZEBRA GALLERY BEGINNING JULY 18

Evan Fitzgerald’s current work explores the ideas of persona. The word persona is rooted in the Latin word for a theatrical mask. Carl Jung described persona as a social mask that we all put on—something to embody, different masks for different settings. By obscuring the subject’s face, their headdress becomes the focal point. The individual is merely a pedestal for displaying the headdress. In Evan’s work, large portraits of subjects wearing flowers, plants, and unlikely animals as headdresses take us back to when humans first explored the thought-provoking notion of persona and how we chose to present ourselves to the world.

“Both Gabriel and Evan bring such creative and whimsical works to the gallery. I hope visitors will be mesmerized by the details these artists bring to their paintings,” shares Susan Schauer John, owner of The Zebra Gallery. CS

‘WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT AFTER ALL,’ IS A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE KATE SPADE, AND HER

BEST FRIEND ELYCE ARONS SHARES THEIR BRAND, FRANCES VALENTINE, AT WINDSWEPT CLOTHIERS

Frances Valentine is rooted in a story and its pieces are designed with joie de vivre.

Best friends Elyce Arons and the late Kate Spade co-founded the brand in 2016, inspired by their love of feel-good fashion, timeless designs, patterns that make you smile, and practical wearability.

There’s a backstory leading up to Frances Valentine. Elyce shares it in a gracious legacy story, We Might Just Make It After All: My Best Friendship with Kate Spade

Elyce is celebrating the book’s launch at Easton’s Windswept Clothiers, where owner Debra Principi will hold a trunk show on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 1-3 p.m., to be followed by a book signing at The Ebenezer Theater.

The book talks about the ultimate sale of the Kate Spade brand and Elyce also shares how shopping—only to find holes in the market—drew them back into business as Frances Valentine.

Frances Valentine: The Fabric of Friendship

“Katy and I both missed fashion and creating things,” Elyce says.

They’d look for a piece to round out an outfit or just anything that would pique their interest. “There’s kind of a hole here that we need to fill,” they agreed.

Guided by the philosophy “Wear what makes you happy,” the best friends made a meaningful mark on the fashion world—one that Elyce and her close-knit team carry forward.

Love, Katy

Elyce’s book harkens back to good times, tough times and the fiber that lasting friendships are made of. The two reawakened their hunger for fashion when creating Frances Valentine.

Elyce wanted the brand name to honor Katy, so they tossed around family names and landed on Francis, using the feminine spelling for their women’s wear. Valentine is from Katy’s mother’s side.

After Kate Spade’s tragic passing in 2018, Elyce says the team “was sort of like, ‘What should we do?’” And we decided that we should keep going.”

“We wanted to do a tribute to Katy, but designing a new handbag didn’t feel like the right thing,” Elyce says. “So, we took two of her favorite vintage clothing pieces and remade those, and they sold out immediately. We called the line Love, Katy.”

Frances Valentine now offers handbags, shoes, and clothing. “It’s based on the pieces we collected over the years as inspiration. We want you to walk into a store and say, ‘Oh, my God, I have to have that,’ like it’s a piece of art you’re drawn to,” says Elyce.

The got-to-have-it vibe is what Elyce’s design team accomplishes.

Of the Frances Valentine line, Elyce says, “It’s like she’s still here. And I think she’d be really happy to see what we’ve done with it.”

Feeling the Story

Debra Principi says the Frances Valentine collection in her shop includes colorful, funloving pieces, adding that the aesthetic is a natural fit for her Easton venue.

“We have a lot of fun here, and that’s why I love Elyce so much—she’s fun, energetic and extremely inspirational,” she says.

Katy and Elyce always wanted to open a retail location, and now there are eight Frances Valentine stores across the East Coast, Southeast and Texas. Expanding the brand into shops like Windswept Clothiers is telling the story in venues that share a love for creativity.

Just as the Kate Spade brand expanded into complementary offerings, Frances Valentine has been collaborating with vendors that align with its vision. Frances

Elyce Arons and Kate Spade made their mark on the fashion world guided by the words, “Wear what makes you happy.”

Valentine partnered with Caddis to create reading glasses, a nod to book lovers who want to soak up the story in style.

Next, the brand is introducing cosmetic bags in an array of prints for the book tour and trunk show.

Purchasing any Frances Valentine item fulfills that luxe “gift to yourself,” Elyce says.

She continues, “Creating pieces for a lifetime is what Frances Valentine is all about—a jacket you can wear five years from now and say, ‘This still looks good on me, and I get 15 compliments every time I wear it.’” CS

Saltwater Legacy

AS THE CHINCOTEAGUE PONY SWIM MARKS ITS CENTENNIAL YEAR, THIS CHERISHED TRADITION CONTINUES TO HONOR THE SPIRIT OF THE ISLAND AND THE BEAUTY OF THE WILD PONIES WHO HAVE CALLED IT HOME FOR GENERATIONS

Each summer, thousands of spectators gather along the banks of Assateague Channel on Virginia’s Eastern Shore for a truly unique opportunity. Cameras in hand and eyes fixed on the water, they await a sight as stirring as it is iconic: the Chincoteague Pony Swim—a breathtaking tradition that’s a century in the making.

The origins of this annual event date back to 1925, when the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company sought a creative way to fundraise and support their growing town. Inspired by the wild ponies roaming nearby Assateague Island, the fire company partnered with local horsemen—soon to be known as “Saltwater Cowboys”—to round up the herd and swim them across the channel

to Chincoteague Island. Once ashore, the young foals would be auctioned off to raise money for fire equipment and resources. But the story of these ponies stretches back even further—into the mists of folklore and shipwreck legend. One enduring tale claims that the ponies are descendants of Spanish horses that swam to shore after a colonial-era galleon sank offshore.

While some historians point to 17thcentury settlers as the more likely source, the mystery adds to the mystique of the herd and the island itself.

Today, the Pony Swim is more than a fundraiser—it’s a cherished cultural celebration. The event unfolds over several days in late July, beginning with the Saltwater Cowboys’ roundup of the wild Assateague herd. On swim day, the ponies are guided through the water at low tide, with young foals sticking close to their mothers. It’s a stunning spectacle—wild horses churning through the bay as boats and crowds cheer from all angles.

Once on Chincoteague, the ponies are paraded down Main Street to the fairgrounds, where the Pony Auction takes place. Most of the foals are sold to new homes across the country, but each year a few are designated as “buybacks”—auctioned in name only and returned to the island to ensure the herd’s longevity. The funds raised not only support the fire department, but also help cover care costs for the remaining ponies.

Despite the passage of time, the Chincoteague Pony Swim has remained remarkably true to its roots. For locals, it’s a proud piece of their identity; for visitors, it’s a rare glimpse into a living tradition that has galloped its way into American folklore.

Whether you’re drawn by the wild ponies, the town’s charming spirit or the history of the event itself, the Chincoteague Pony Swim is well worth adding to your summer bucket list. CS

SEE FOR YOURSELF

Each year, the Chincoteague Pony Swim draws an impressive crowd—typically 40,000 to 50,000 spectators—who line the shoreline and parade route to witness the iconic swim and festivities. For more info and planning tips, visit ChincoteagueChamber.com.

CHEF NINO MANCARI DELIVERS A MEMORABLE CULINARY EXPERIENCE INFUSED WITH LOCALLY SOURCED INGREDIENTS

Growing up on the Eastern Shore, backyard bonfire feasts and beachside picnics reigned supreme, with simple, old-school spreads and passed-down recipes that friends and families swapped. Potlucks and barbecues were uncomplicated yet expansive. No faking it, just really good food and fun.

This is what Nino Mancari remembers about summers growing up on the Eastern Shore. An executive chef with Common

Ground Hospitality, which operates Ocean City’s Hooked—as well as other popular restaurants—he says, “Our goal is to distill those sharedmemory feasts into menu entrees with ingredients that are sourced as locally as possible.”

This translates into acquiring boat-to-table seafood, grass-fed meats, fresh produce from Eastern Shore soil and the hearty bread and bountiful cakes that round out a homegrown menu. Nino partners with more than 30 family-owned vendors. “We support all forms of the local economy,” he says.

Opened in 2013, the handcrafted spirit at Hooked lives on—and now in an iteration that speaks to guests’ appetite for immersion in Chesapeake views and vibes, grounded in Nino’s vision for delivering the tastes locals celebrate across its menu.

A much-anticipated wood-fired grill is now an open-kitchen centerpiece—a “foundational evolution.” Now, Nino says, “Being able to showcase flavor from the most primal of cooking methods is what makes us shine.” The updated focal point of Hooked’s new openkitchen is its Spanish-style grill—it’s a must-see.

It’s a story of everything old being new again, including house favorites like the cioppino, three lively bar areas and a growing wine and cocktail program.

Close-Proximity Purveyors

Marshall’s Seafood nets hard- and soft-shell crabs and the familyowned operation is a go-to for these Eastern Shore favorites. Local and seasonal guests know the captain and crew. Also, fresh catches from Skilligalee Seafood are menu highlights, and filling the signature pot of cioppino fishermen’s stew takes a crew.

Setting a High Bar

“We realized we are a bit of a bar with a great restaurant around it,” quips Nino, who cites the tiki bar, terrace and upstairs dining bar as a trifecta of gathering for spirits and dishes ranging from “snack bar” options like Pot of Mussels and Crab & Corn Bisque to holdable dishes like Baja Fish Tacos, along with entree options showcasing all the seafood you expect and savory dishes like a grilled pork chop.

“We have a modern, full-service bar and a wine list that is growing,” Nino says. “We’ve tripled it since last year, and with our expert staff, we’re growing the cocktail program as well.”

Icing on the Cake

A spirited atmosphere, local hospitality and shared interest in supporting cottage businesses extends beyond meat and seafood. Hooked proudly serves Mary Ada Marshall’s renowned Smith Island Cake, a treat made for her fisherman husband’s crew who’d be out on the water for days or weeks. It’s the official state dessert of Maryland and has garnered a great deal of fame.

“In our coastal area, we honor farmers and fishermen, but it’s more than that,” Nino says. “It’s the butcher, baker and candlestick maker and we buy as much as we can close to home.” CS

SEAN NORRIS VISITS A FEW OF HIS FAVORITE COASTAL ESTABLISHMENTS, WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS HIS NAME— AND THEY CERTAINLY KNOW THEIR COCKTAILS

Photography by Heartbeat Branding Co.

When I’m not busy mixing up cocktails for my guests, you can find me treating myself to a couple rounds at my local bars. It’s a pleasure running into former regulars and friends who are happy to catch up. Inevitably, one of the most common questions I receive is: “What bars are your favorite to drink at?” That’s a tough question! Over the years, I’ve come to love many of the various bars and restaurants here at the Delaware Beaches—but like anyone, I do have my favorites as well. There’s nothing like spending a few hours on the sand and then taking a short stroll to a local watering hole. The closer to the ocean, the better! You can find a ton of talented bartenders and fabulous cocktail programs along the coast. Allow me to highlight a few that you should absolutely tie into your next beach day!

Shorebreak Lodge

Let’s begin with a town we’re likely all familiar with—Rehoboth Beach. Once upon a time (in 2020), I was fortunate enough to live right above a wonderful establishment called Shorebreak Lodge. I would often stop in on my way back from the beach, eventually meeting my future colleague and friend Ben Winiarczyk, a fellow cocktail nerd. As it turns out, he loved bartending and hospitality so much that he bought the restaurant in 2024. Since then, he has completely overhauled the cocktail program as well as the bar itself. I left it to Ben to mix up one of his favorites.

Yuzu Bloom

High West Double Rye

Yuzu juice

Simple syrup

Angostura bitters

Egg white

Notes: Dry, complex, tangy, herbal, creamy, sipper

Yuzu is a citrus that is a hybrid of sorts between grapefruit, lemon and mandarin. The juice is tart, floral and slightly herbaceous. I love the way it complements the spiciness from the rye. The egg white is the key here, though, as it smooths and rounds off the entire cocktail.

Pura Vida

One Coastal

The bar program here, headed by Ryan Johnson, closely follows the principles of the culinary program built by Matt Kern, One Coastal’s owner and executive chef. The establishment was a James Beard finalist last year, and they clearly have intentions to aim even higher this time around. As always, the ingredients

in the restaurant are farm-fresh and locally sourced. As an aside for wine drinkers, you’ll be delighted to know that One Coastal has built their wine program in collaboration with Sam Anderson of Ouro Wines, a wine importer that focuses on high-quality natural wines—organic, clean, and delicious. Here’s what Ryan recommended for me!

The Dutchess

Rock Town Basil Vodka

Grapefruit

St. Germain Elderflower

Lemon

Simple syrup

Club soda

Notes: Light, fizzy, half-sweet, refreshing, floral

This is the perfect cocktail to begin your evening with. The basil vodka base makes it aromatic, inviting and easy to drink, while the elderflower and grapefruit complement it with mild sweetness and acidity. The club soda adds pleasant effervescence and simultaneously creates a lovely low-ABV cocktail that won’t leave you buzzed before your next round.

Nantuckets

The moment you enter the bar space, you’ll be captivated by the ornate woodwork throughout the entire room. Nantuckets has one of my favorite backbars, aesthetically and in spirit selection. Like me, you’ll find yourself shifting to see all the goodies they have to offer. The program itself is headed by Delaney Twining, another colleague and friend of mine. Not only is he a seasoned bartender, but also a certified sommelier. Look out for both a killer cocktail list and wine list while you feast your eyes on what is one of the most beautiful bars on the coast.

Beast of the East

Codigo Rosa

Triple sec

Cilantro-jalapeno simple syrup

House sour mix

Lime

Notes: Smoky, spicy, herbaceous, halfsweet, sour

My favorite part about this margarita variation is the smokiness imparted by roasting the jalapenos. While cilantro tends to be a “love it or hate it” flavor, its subtle nature in this cocktail is something that any palate will appreciate. It’s not overbearing in any manner. CS

Melon Magic

FOUR SIMPLE & FUN RECIPES TO CELEBRATE THE TASTY SEASON OF THE WATERMELON

Summer Watermelon, Cucumber & Feta Salad

Ingredients

4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed or balled

1½ cups cucumber, thinly sliced (preferably English or Persian cucumbers)

¾ cup feta cheese, crumbled

¼ cup fresh mint leaves, chopped or torn

2 Tbsp EVOO

1 Tbsp fresh lime juice (or lemon juice)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional: ¼ small red onion, very thinly sliced

Instructions

1. Prepare the ingredients: Cube the watermelon, slice the cucumbers, crumble the feta, and chop the mint. If using red onion, soak slices in cold water for 10 minutes to mellow their flavor.

2. Make the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lime juice, a pinch of salt, and black pepper.

3. Assemble the salad: In a large serving bowl, gently combine the watermelon, cucumber, red onion (if using), and mint. Drizzle with the dressing and toss lightly.

4. Add feta last: Sprinkle crumbled feta over the top just before serving for the best texture and presentation.

5. Serve and enjoy: Best served chilled. If making ahead of time, combine all ingredients except the mint and feta— and add those just before serving.

Homemade Watermelon Popsicles

Ingredients

4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed

2 Tbsp fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)

2 Tbsp honey or agave syrup (optional)

Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Blend: Combine the watermelon cubes, lime juice, honey (if using) and a pinch of salt. Blend until completely smooth.

2. Strain (optional): For a smoother texture, pour the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp.

3. Pour & Insert: Fill popsicle molds with the watermelon mixture, leaving a little room at the top for expansion. Place the lid on the molds and insert popsicle sticks.

4. Freeze & Enjoy: Freeze for at least 4-6 hours, or until fully solid. Enjoy when ready!

Watermelon Apps Dipped in Chocolate

Ingredients

3 cups seedless watermelon, cut into 1-inch cubes

1 cup milk, dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 Tbsp coconut oil (optional, for smoother melting)

Flaky sea salt, chopped pistachios or almonds (optional, for garnish)

Toothpicks or small skewers (for serving)

Instructions

1. Prep & Melt: Cut the watermelon into small cubes and pat dry to remove excess moisture. This helps the chocolate stick better. Next, melt the chocolate.

2. Dip: Holding each watermelon piece with a toothpick or skewer, dip it halfway into the melted chocolate. Let the excess drip off.

3. Garnish & Chill: Sprinkle dipped sides with toppings before chocolate sets. Place your apps on a parchment-lined tray and refrigerate for 15-20 minutes until chocolate is firm. Enjoy when ready!

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Freeze the watermelon: Place cubed, seedless watermelon on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight until completely solid.

2. Whip the cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the cold heavy cream until it forms stiff peaks (about 3-4 minutes with a hand mixer).

3. Blend the watermelon: In a blender or food processor, blend the frozen watermelon until smooth. You may need to pulse and scrape down the sides.

4. Mix the base: In a separate bowl, stir together the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.

5. Combine, Freeze & Enjoy: Gently fold the whipped cream into the condensed milk mixture. Then fold in the blended watermelon until fully combined. Pour the mixture into a loaf pan or airtight container. Smooth the top, cover, and freeze for 6-8 hours, or until firm. Enjoy when ready! CS

Stay safe and healthy this summer

For both locals and visitors, the summer is a time to get outside and enjoy the beach, surfing and fishing. Though the kids may be on a break from school, it’s important not to take a break from staying safe and healthy. Here are some tips for making this summer a great one.

Stay hydrated.

If you’re spending a lot of time outside in the sun, you’ll get dehydrated more quickly — and if you’re drinking alcohol, that’s even worse.

“Dehydration can be dangerous to all organs,” said Dr. Chris Snyder, chief quality officer/physician advisor at TidalHealth.

Generally, he recommends six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day; this should double for those who are exerting themselves, creating sweating.

Be aware of the risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, too.

Protect yourself from sunburn.

Just because sunburn is relatively common doesn’t mean it's safe. Sunburn is a major risk factor for skin cancer, which one in five Americans will get by age 70, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. The Foundation also says people who have had five or more sunburns have a doubled risk of contracting melanoma — if it’s caught early, almost everyone survives at least five years.

You can protect yourself by wearing sunblock or sunscreen, hats and clothes that have UV protection, and staying in the shade.

If you notice something unusual on your skin, it’s better to get it looked at sooner rather than later. Set up an appointment at the Atlantic General

Skin Cancer Clinic to see if the spot you’ve found is cancerous or precancerous.

Swim safely.

As the Ocean City Beach Patrol says, “Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard’s in the stand.”

The ocean can be a dangerous place, so it’s safer to swim when lifeguards, who can recognize when someone needs help, are on duty.

“The current can be very dangerous,” Dr. Snyder said.

There were more than 100,000 rescues reported at Delmarva beaches in 2024, according to the United States Lifesaving Association.

At the largest area beach, Ocean City, the Ocean City Beach Patrol reported an attendance of more than 107 million last year — which included 89,215 rescues and 48,730 medical aids. Twenty unguarded drownings were reported in Ocean City, along with 13 guarded drownings.

Pay attention to warnings from lifeguards, too. The Ocean City

Beach Patrol took more than 2.8 million preventive actions in 2024, according to the United States Lifesaving Association data.

Dr. Snyder said for people with neuromuscular diseases or without muscular capability, which can include children, currents are even more dangerous. It’s safer for them not to go in the water above their knees.

Near-drownings are scary, but don’t give CPR to someone who is coughing or talking, he said. If you need medical assistance for a serious issue, call 911.

Be careful on the sand.

Digging large holes in the sand can be unsafe, and some beaches have rules against it. Beaches also have rules about the types of tents and canopies you can bring. If you install a beach umbrella, make sure it’s secured.

Watch out for jellyfish.

Jellyfish stings are usually painful for about five to 10 minutes, Dr. Snyder said. Some cause a skin reaction. Ice, topical Benadryl, and even Windex can help, he said.

Be careful with fireworks.

It’s not legal to use aerial fireworks in Maryland or Delaware, but even if you’re using ground-based sparklers when it is legal (there are only a few days in which ground-based fireworks can be used in Delaware, including July 4), it’s important to be safe.

The National Fire Protection Association said fireworks-related injuries sent more than 10,000 people to emergency rooms across the country in 2022.

Get on the path to weight loss

Struggling to lose weight and feel like you’ve tried everything? Let the compassionate professionals at TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition and Atlantic General Bariatric Center help.

The medical teams want to provide the tools to help you maintain a healthy weight — not judge.

“It’s a very supportive environment, that’s what we really try to build,” said Mary Williams-Feldman, CRNP, who cares for patients at TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition in Seaford.

Angela Simmons, CRNP, who cares for patients at Atlantic General Bariatric Center in Berlin, also stresses the importance of encouragement. Both providers say patients shouldn’t be afraid to come back if they haven’t lost weight since the prior appointment, for example.

Weight loss doesn’t have one solution, and the process looks different for each person.

“Everybody needs to have a personalized plan,” Simmons said.

For Chris Martinez, surgery was the right choice.

In May 2023, he had gastric bypass, or Roux-en-Y, surgery performed by Jarrod Buzalewski, DO, one of TidalHealth’s bariatric surgeons.

Before the surgery, Martinez was 270 pounds, but more of a problem for him was having to be on three medications to control his blood pressure. He was also dealing with acid reflux.

Now, Martinez, who is the public safety manager at TidalHealth Nanticoke, is down to 188 pounds, only needs to take one blood pressure medicine and doesn’t need to take acid reflux medicine. He said he feels 10 or 15 years younger.

The whole process has been positive for him.

“Feeling better medically and physically was the biggest thing,” he said.

Martinez stayed fully committed to the process and said it’s important for people considering surgery to have the right mindset.

On a scale of 1-10, he said he’d rate Dr. Buzalewski an “11.”

“He’s just very personable, and he really, truly cares about his patients,” Martinez said.

Medical weight loss

Simmons said it’s important to learn how the patient is looking to lose weight — whether they want to pursue surgery. Not everyone qualifies for surgery, either; for example, the person’s body mass index could be too low to qualify.

After learning about a patient’s initial goals, Simmons can work with them to find the best way to help. As part of the care she provides, she can connect the person to mental health, fitness and nutrition resources.

Feldman said she’ll generally start out with lab work to see if there’s another reason someone could be struggling to lose weight. Then, she will provide guidance on nutrition and physical activity, and if the patient is interested in medications, she’ll discuss options with them.

Surgical options

If you qualify and choose to move forward with bariatric surgery, your surgeon will discuss which procedure best suits your surgical needs.

TidalHealth surgical weight loss procedures include:

• Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)

• Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y bypass)

• Biliary-pancreatic diversion duodenal switch

Atlantic General Bariatric Center procedures include:

• Sleeve gastrectomy

• Gastric bypass

• Lap band conversion to sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass

Both offices see patients before and after surgeries. One important thing for patients to do afterward is ensure they’re getting enough protein, Feldman said.

Every patient needs to have a mental health evaluation before surgery to ensure this is something they want to do — not that someone else wants them to do — and that they understand the impacts, Simmons said. The screening also includes a history of other mental health issues, such as eating disorders or substance abuse. It’s also helpful for the patient to have support at home.

Both TidalHealth and Atlantic General Hospital offer support groups for patients.

Narrow Escape H+G

AN OCEANFRONT PROPERTY IN BETHANY BEACH EMBRACES A LONG-AND-LEAN LOT WITH INNOVATIVE LAYOUT SOLUTIONS

Ocean waves, salty breezes and the feel of dunescape sand feed Shari Ross Lahlou’s soul. There’s just something about the Eastern Shore—“I’m a beach girl,” she says.

The waterfront is Shari’s happy place, and for decades, her Washington, D.C. family stole away and summered in a South Bethany Beach home in Cat Hill. But Shari always had an eye on finding property even closer to the water, if not oceanfront.

“It was always a dream,” she relates. “I’d look for houses through the years, on and off, during certain periods with more seriousness than others. In 2020, renewing that search, we found this lot, for lack of a better word.”

On the slim property stood a cottage with charm but a floor plan and features that were “pretty original,” as in Formica countertops, three cramped bedrooms, and a bath and a half.

MAXIMIZING SPACE

At just 17½ feet wide, this oceanfront lot posed a unique challenge to building the house of Shari Ross Lahlou’s dreams. With the help of Marnie Homes, she created a house that utilized the space without creating something claustrophobic.

“At first, we thought, ‘How can we work with this?’” says Shari, of taking on some basic upgrades—cosmetic, mostly.

Then the time came to tear down and rebuild so the family could maximize a trailing, 9,600-square-foot lot that pours into the ocean and that is just 17½ feet wide. Shari enlisted in Marnie Homes to leverage the lot’s potential, design workarounds to inherent challenges—setback limitations and stringent zoning—and carve out as much practical space with views as possible.

The project was quite literally a tall order. Building up was a necessity. An innovative layout that essentially connects a main home and cottage house to a central pool deck delivered the format and features on Shari’s wish list.

Leaning In

Shari realized the home needed to be long and lean but wanted to avoid a “shotgun to the ocean” tunnel feel. “We wanted to create a space that felt airy and light and comfortable while maximizing ocean views,” she says. “We didn’t want it to feel claustrophobic in any way.”

When the zoning board denied a request to build two separate structures on the property, “this got the juices flowing and was the genesis of the style,” Shari relates. The result is a street-facing pool and guest house with bedrooms and recreational space, and an oceanfront main home where main living spaces include a great room, dining area, kitchen, primary suite and two additional bedrooms.

All told, the 4,370-square-foot home includes six bedrooms, six full bathrooms and two powder rooms.

To abide by the zoning rule that buildings must be a “connected house,” the guest house and main home are bridged by an expansive weather-ready Ipe pool deck with outdoor seating. Every room has a view—even those in the streetfacing guest house since walls of windows in the main home offer unobstructed vistas. You can see right through the house.

Breezy Living

There was no getting around a galley kitchen, but Shari points to this classic layout’s utility. To open up the space, she opted for a counter-height island with a sink and open storage—another move to maintain a sense of lightness. It extends into a dining table equipped with stools.

Shari relied on designer Sarah Kahn Turner to guide kitchen selections while collaborating on details. Clean-lined white cabinetry is appointed with unlacquered brass hardware that will develop a patina over time. Light fixtures from Visual Comfort are also unlacquered brass and resemble seagrass.

On one end, sliding glass doors open completely, leading to the pool deck. On the other, the kitchen flows into an oceanfront living area with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Borrowing from the seascape’s aesthetic, a stacked stone fireplace introduces sandy texture while maintaining a sleek finish. Rattan lounge chairs infuse an organic element into the space and are joined by a contemporary creamy white sofa. C-style end tables feature graphic abalone tops.

“The house has a very modern overture, which I like to mix and soften with texture,” Shari says. “Pure modern can feel cold and I wanted something that’s very comfortable.”

Coastal Cues

“I wanted an ode to the coastal nature of the house, but I didn’t want it to be in-your-face cliché coastal,” Shari relates.

While she mixes texture, nature notes and contemporary lines, she also loves to punctuate spaces with a pop of glam—gusto pieces, mainly light fixtures, that speak to coastal colors and shapes while introducing an element of surprise.

In the master suite with its pitched, shiplap ceiling, Shari had lots of headroom to consider when selecting lighting. She went for a dramatic recycled sea-glass chandelier in waves of blues by Currey & Company. In the ensuite, a Sputnikstyle chandelier is adorned with glass that resembles tiny, translucent silver dollars.

In a guest suite, a Dale Chihuly-inspired spiraling glass fixture in blue hues dangles from the ceiling almost as if someone uncorked a party popper full of streamers. “This fixture was chosen to have something long and big with impact—maybe something you can see from outside the home,” says Shari. “It adds a focal point and visual interest apart from the otherwise fairly clean aesthetic.”

Fixtures were sourced from Visual Comfort.

Details, Details

Bath and powder rooms afford creative space to step outside a home’s overall aesthetic and have a little fun giving each its own personality. Sometimes, inspiration starts with a piece of art, a tile pattern or, in the case of one powder room, a must-have sink.

The bowl sink by Native Trails has a swirl of abalone within the vessel. Shari couldn’t resist. “I found the sink and we designed everything around it,” she says. A brass mirror mimics the shape.

Her daughter’s ensuite is a classic Mediterranean design with blue-and-white mosaic tile. Her son, on the other hand, opted for a sleek black-and-white color palette.

In the master ensuite, Shari points to the shower’s imported Italian porcelain slabs that resemble stone. “I literally study it when I’m in the shower,” she says of its wave-like veining.

From the home’s finishes to its layout, every design detail was considered for an outcome that Shari and her family wholly embrace.

“It’s a sanctuary,” she says. “I love looking at the water and smelling the air. The light that enters the home is phenomenal, and it changes throughout the year. It’s a dream to wake up and see that every day.” CS

The home was designed as a weekend retreat, tailored for entertaining and maximizing waterfront living in a wellestablished bayfront community. Unlike many oversized luxury builds, the front exterior is intentionally understated to maintain the area’s charm, while the back of the home is the true showpiece. Built with premium craftsmanship, the home incorporates reclaimed barn wood gifted by a friend, adding personal history and warmth to the modern coastal design. With expansive glass walls, multiple balconies, and a resort-style pool, the design fully embraces panoramic bay

views and indoor-outdoor living. Inside, the home balances modern elegance with warm, rustic details. The custom bar transitions onto the deck, offering a perfect perch for watching fireworks over the bay. In the kitchen, a double island layout caters to hosting large gatherings, while reclaimed barn wood accents add character and authenticity. The floating cable-railed staircase enhances the open-concept feel. Every element is intentionally designed for entertaining, relaxation and summer living—an architectural masterpiece that embraces Delaware’s coastal lifestyle.

awkward wall angles and a primary linen closet with trapezoid-shaped shelves. The Closet Smith team also tackled an en suite with a mechanical chase. Last, but certainly not least, the team created a custom pantry. Its small size demanded an outside-of-the-box approach to maximize the style, feel and functionality of its design.

Intentional By Design

HONORING FAMILY, TRADITION AND TIME SPENT AT THE BEACH WERE PARAMOUNT IN CREATING A CUSTOM REHOBOTH BEACH HOME. THE RESULT IS AN IMPECCABLE PLACE TO GATHER THAT CAPITALIZES ON THE PROPERTY’S UNIQUE SURROUNDINGS.

Landing an expansive lot on Lake Avenue in Rehoboth Beach is a rare feat. Most properties are 100 feet deep with no more than 50 feet of frontage. Then there’s 63 Lake Avenue, set on nearly double the acreage—one of two family homes collaboratively designed by previous owner Susan Crampton Davis and Seattle-based Cheryl Hughes of Hughes Studio Architects, with Dewson Construction ultimately bringing their vision to life.

“Building a house is easy, but building a home is a sacred process where you take time, intention and love to create a gathering place where people will make lasting memories,” says Susan, crediting Dewson Construction and senior project manager Steve deBrabander, who helped guide a lengthy construction process to the finish line in September 2024.

The storyline for 63 Lake Avenue and its neighboring home began when Susan’s extended family recognized a need for more living space, having summered and vacationed in Rehoboth Beach for decades. They happened upon a B&B property comprised of two lots and the owners’ next-door third lot, on which stood a traditional bungalow the family had owned for more than a century while operating their cozy beach rentals.

“This satisfied what we were looking for as a family—a communal gathering place that honors family, tradition and going to the beach,” Susan relates.

They acquired the property, and to do its legacy justice, set out to design and build two distinct family homes. Located in the quaint downtown district, the home’s park-like setting is walking distance to the ocean and offers a front-porch community feeling and private outdoor living in the back.

“At first, I had no idea we were going to build two houses, but it felt right,” Susan says.

After spending time in the homes, they decided to sell 63 Lake Avenue, listing with Jack Lingo, Inc. REALTOR® in Rehoboth Beach. The listing agent was Zane Jones and the co-listing agent was Randy Mason.

Susan’s intention was to “re-home” the special beach property to a family who shares an appreciation for light, nature and a practically designed house made for making memories. This came to fruition in June.

Timeless Living

The kitchen continues the theme of inviting the outside in, with a warm, subdued color palette including smoky green cabinetry and a Clé zellige backsplash in weathered white tile from Morocco. Unlacquered brass hardware offers a lived-in, timeless aesthetic. Glass upper cabinetry and open shelving contribute to a sense of airy lightness.

The home has five bedrooms, and what Realtor Zane Jones describes as a “smart layout” designed for gathering. A roomy foyer with a staircase of open walnut treads allows light to pour through and up to the second level. A third-floor loft space serves as an office and media zone, opening to a veranda overlooking the backyard.

“Upon entering, you are immediately struck by how easy it would be to entertain in the space,” Zane notes, pointing out one of many reasons the home sold quickly.

A feeling of continuity and togetherness is what Susan had in mind when building the home, especially in its primary living spaces that accommodate everyday activities. Equally important was the collaborative process of designing this retreat.

“It honors beach traditions,” says Susan.

Light, by Nature

Ushering in natural light was a priority and a design element Susan had exercised in previous home projects, such as a house in Montana with a glass kitchen ceiling.

Of 63 Lake Avenue, Susan says, “Design elements revolve around where light comes into the home.”

Back doors and transoms by West Coast-based Pinky’s feature tempered glass fortified with heavy-gauge wrought iron and are designed to scale impressive heights. “They are timeless and strong, providing a sense of stability,” Susan says.

Panels of glass throughout the home invite nature into living spaces. “Our hope was to have as much green space as possible, and the glass doors leading into the kitchen were a subtle way to connect the inside to the outside,” Susan relates.

Meanwhile, in the living room adjacent to a dining space where some privacy is afforded without sacrificing openness—thanks again to Pinky’s—a row of clerestory windows above eye level introduces light while obscuring a building next door.

MORE TO EXPLORE

Rising to the Occasion

With 22-foot vaulted ceilings in the living and dining areas, “there is a rising movement and a solidness,” Susan says, referring to wood collars that accentuate the ceiling’s dramatic peak. Initially, she wasn’t all that excited about the collars that were required by the city building code. “But when it was completed—so brilliant!” she relates.

At the same time, horizontal treatments enter the picture, inside and out.

The home’s exterior is clad with highperformance wood siding in blonde by Delta Millworks, placed vertically. Horizontal charcoal Hardie plank offers latitude against the blonde siding’s longitude.

“There is stability in those juxtapositions,” Susan explains. CS
