Settled on an elevated bluff overlooking the Wicomico River’s bend and surrounded by non-tidal ponds is a bucolic horse farm with several hundreds of acres of pastures, pristine coastal forested space — a delightfully recluse yet conveniently relevant island location. And on that Maryland escape is a majestic reproduction of an 18th century Williamsburg Manor house that stands like a seminal figure after a five-year, full-on historic preservation by Bryan LeCompte of Yard Designs, Inc. in Salisbury.

“I love history and creating timeless pieces, and this was a true opportunity to be a key instrument in bringing this home back to its glory, while making it a reflection of its owners,” Bryan says, who initially found the property in distress. It had been neglected and taken under the wing of equestrian lovers who appreciate its past and were inherently drawn to the land.

The landmark project was a labor of love for LeCompte, who brought his interior-exterior design experience to a rollcall of painstakingly detailed materials selections, installations and furnishings. “The project’s biggest challenge was working on the interiors and exteriors at the same time,” Bryan says. “We began in 2018 and worked through the global pandemic, dealing with the industry’s challenges of supply and demand.”

“I was honored to be a part of this project and help the homeowners realize their vision,” he says, humbly proud of the outcome for its owners who breathe life into this legacy property.

Lighting The Way!

Lighting has entered the digital age at Overture! Gone are the days of high voltage and bulky wire requirements. The emergence of LED technology and its minimal power requirements allow power and control over a single network cable to drive a smarter and more energy efficient lighting experience. Our custom designed low voltage lighting systems are completely tunable, controllable and dimmable — offering you unmatched flexibility, features and benefits.

The Right Lighting System Can Literally Change Your Life

We hear all the time about how to maintain our health and wellbeing. Exercise. Sleep. Healthy diet. So, would it surprise you to know that light also plays a large part in your health, wellbeing, and mood? Medical research continues to prove that sleep patterns, mood and general health are linked to the lighting we are exposed to. We create lighting solutions that drive the ability to deliver any mood setting or proper task lighting at any time of day or night. At the press of a button, or continually throughout the day, Circadian Rhythm and Human Centric lighting becomes part of your lifestyle. Our systems can organically adjust the lighting to the perfect setting to match the time of day, waking us up in the morning and putting us to sleep at night.

Accentuate Your Home’s Interior Design

When designing any space, color, texture and finishes play a critical role in the process. Equally important is lighting. With dynamic lighting, colors pop, textures stand out and finishes have added depth and luster. Think of lighting as the fourth element of good design, which turns colors and textures into a vibrant palette of finishes and materials.

Customization at Your Fingertips

We can make any dimmable fixture or light bulb smart and offer full color and white tuning that you can adjust for any setting. Select the exact shade you want or set integrated dynamic modes to create an immersive experience — all of which can be added to scenes and timers. Create focal points, highlight architectural features and evoke powerful emotions with dynamic lighting throughout your home.

You can feel confident in knowing that Overture offers the latest in whole home technology that provides the best solutions for your needs and surroundings. At Overture, we take great pride in designing and installing the appropriate system for our clients — while exceeding their expectations.

IN

CITY

“Growing up in Salisbury, my family loved visiting Ocean City, and some of my fondest childhood memories were spent enjoying all that the beautiful town had to offer, such as the Boardwalk, beach and parks. When I became a father, I wanted to provide my children those same experiences, which is why we recently relocated here.

We have come to know OC as a community that is welcoming in every way, and provides a safe, small-town feel full of possibilities for our kids and the next generation alike. Everyone we have met has been so welcoming and kind, and it has been a pleasure forming friendships with so many wonderful people since our move.

Living locally, we will be able to better serve our clients now that we are here at the beach. And just as important, we look forward to getting involved and giving back to this community for many years to come.” — Justin

Moments Captured

COASTAL PHOTOGRAPHER ELLIOT MACGUIRE SHARES WHAT IT TAKES TO EXCEL BEHIND THE LENS

When Elliot MacGuire started his photography journey more than six years ago, it was emblematic of him embracing the slower pace of living in a beach town. “The coast is constantly changing with the seasons, and there is always something different or new to see,” MacGuire, a resident of Dewey Beach, says. It was appreciating the area’s daily changes he set out to document, and photography was the perfect medium for him. “Waking up to a new sunrise every day over the ocean, it’s hard not to be inspired.”

Throughout his career, he hasn’t only captured beach sunrises. He focuses on landscape, wildlife and real estate photography, as well as drone, real estate and wedding videography.

local 30 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024

One of the most interesting projects he did, however, was an undertaking very much a product of the times—he spent one year at the tail-end of Covid traveling the country, documenting his trip with stunning images. If this adventure sounds like it would be lonely, fear not, because he was joined by Shiloh, his faithful four-legged friend, a labrador mix.

While hanging out with your furry best friend and seeing the splendor of this great country may sound like fun and games, there is more to this medium than just clicking a button. “Photography involves hours of planning and preparation, and early mornings and late nights to get the shot you want,” Elliot says. “You’ll be reminded of all that work when you look back at every one of your photos.”

MacGuire is cognizant of how scary it can be to start out. Therefore, he’s less concerned about what equipment amateurs use—which can create a barrier into the artform—and more interested in your intent. “Anyone who wants to start out in photography should just do it,” Elliot suggests. “Smartphone cameras are incredible these days, and you always have it with you. Plenty of times, I’ve used a lack of equipment as an excuse for why I couldn’t capture a specific shot when I could have, but the steps to capturing it would have looked very different.”

No matter what, though, MacGuire maintains a Zen approach to both his life and art. “Capturing a moment requires us to be present,” Elliot adds. “Your camera and accessories help you freeze that instant in time, but they can also distract you from what you’re trying to capture. If a photographer isn’t focused on what’s in front of them, they’ll miss the shot every time.”

He continues to focus on what’s in front of him—the area’s daily changes—while documenting it all through his work.

PRESENT IN THE MOMENT

Elliot has learned from experience that photographers who are not focused on what’s in front of them can miss amazing opportunities.

Focal Points

Elliot’s recommendations for what’s most important to the art of photography

Do: Find a camera that forces you to think outside the box. I use a Fuji X 100V, a fixed lens camera, and it taught me to move physically rather than zooming in and out. This constraint unexpectedly freed my creativity, allowing me to focus more on the scene and less on the equipment.

Don’t: Feel you need to have an arsenal of gear. When I first started, I had not one, but three different drones—each with unique perspectives and capabilities. Unfortunately, this led to decision fatigue, and my art went from a joy to a chore.

Do: Focus on finding solutions. Your gear doesn’t prevent you from creating. If you’re fully immersed in the moment—and not preoccupied with the tools in your hands—your true creativity will come through.

Don’t: Go broke trying to acquire equipment because it makes you seem more professional. Work with what you have and push those boundaries. You can do this by focusing on textures, experimenting with angles or stepping out of your comfort zone with different subjects. Then, you can reinvest in your career and upgrade equipment when you have more resources. CS

Creativity in Bloom Creativity in Bloom

POPPY JAR FLOWERS CULTIVATES CONNECTIONS AND IS A GROWING PASSION FOR THE LINDSAYS IN ST. MICHAELS

The only thing Cristina Lindsay had ever grown was a humble aloe plant on her balcony while living in Europe. That is, until 2017 when she and her husband, Josh, happened upon a cottage in Easton, after several years of Airbnb stays on the Eastern Shore to escape the congestion of life in Washington D.C. Both are practicing attorneys.

A modest property felt like “acres, endless space,” says Cristina, who immediately

noticed confetti spread of wildflowers amid overgrown beds, where some beauties popped up among the thatch. “I have always loved flowers and arranging the ones I buy at the store,” she says, adding, “I had never grown a single thing.”

This quickly changed when the couple bought the home and began stealing away from Georgetown to the Shore. Growing up, Cristina recalls, “Whenever I was near flowers, I would pick them and make a little bouquet.”

After settling in a bit, she began growing

more flowers, rehabbing existing beds and enlisting in Josh to build new ones, eventually doting over eight 9-by-3-foot raised flower beds. “We did it all ourselves,” she says, noting how the newfound hobby was a creative escape.

Seemingly overnight, hundreds of tulips bloomed and there were many stems to spare, so they began delivering them to friends in the city. “We hitched our porch fridge to a trailer attached to our jeep and brought them into town,” Cristina says.

Flowers for Sale. The cottage industry venture was quite modest at first. Ultimately, Poppy Jar Flowers was born out of curiosity, connection and craft.

Now seven years later and settled into a 4.5-acre St. Michaels “forever home” they acquired in 2020, the five-week spring subscription service sells out, Cristina fashions flower arrangements weekly for Rouse Restaurant at The Wildset Hotel, holds pop-up shops at The Mill Salon + Apothecary, fulfills bridal orders—and has made dear friends and coveted community relationships, all thanks to Poppy Jar Flowers.

“As someone who moved from the city to a small town, the flowers really allowed us to meet people here locally,” Cristina says. “And now there are customers who reached out and we have become friends.”

“As someone who moved from the city to a small town, the flowers really allowed us to meet people here locally. And now there are customers who reached out and we have become friends.”

BLOOMING WITH BENEFITS

The Lindsays move to St. Michaels has enriched their family dynamic and fostered new relationships across the community through Poppy Jar Flowers.

Life, Off the Docket. You can’t quite call it a side shuffle. It’s more a way of life, off the docket.

After moving to St. Michaels, the Lindsay’s growing space multiplied—and so did production. From the sprinkle of wildflowers that inspired a passion grew a new area of study for Cristina. “I was making connections with growers in the area, educating myself by watching tutorials, ordering seed, and there was a lot of trial and error,” she says.

Poppy Jar Flowers’ bandwidth encompasses 17 beds, 4-by-30-feet in size—again handmade at home. This doesn’t count the multiple rose gardens. The business offers seasonal flower subscriptions, custom arrangements and event florals. If you happen to land on a spring week when an excess is plucked from beds and not claimed by reservations, you could get lucky. There are two weekly pickup days and two delivery days. Sometimes, there are stems to spare.

WELCOME DR. URBAN

Beebe Healthcare is proud to welcome plastic and reconstructive surgeon, DaKota Urban, MD, to Beebe Medical Group.

Beebe Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

18947 John J Williams Highway Suite 205,

Dr. Urban’s specializations are diverse and include breast reconstruction, malignant and benign skin lesion excision and reconstruction, post-weight loss surgery procedures (abdominoplasty/panniculectomy, brachioplasty, and thighplasty), soft tissue trauma care, wound reconstruction, and cosmetic surgery.

“They are interesting, unique varieties—the luxury flowers you would have in your wedding bouquet, but you can have them delivered to your house on a Wednesday,” Cristina describes, an entrée into the research she dedicates toward sourcing uncommon seeds and bulbs. From gardening forums to sharing new varieties bred by growers, she’s on a constant treasure hunt. She orders bulbs from a wholesaler, scouring countries like Holland and Italy for innovative blooms like Ranunculus and Anemone.

Oh, the Colors—Saturated and Divine.

“Oh my gosh, the pinks, blushes, whites, yellows, oranges, they are magnificent,” says Cristina, bubbling over with an enthusiasm relayed in the final product and warm reception from recipients. Dialing back to pandemic lockdown flower deliveries, she relates, “People were lonely. They wanted flowers, so we were delivering them during full lock down and people obviously felt a need for them. It was a way to communicate and show you care without seeing them in person.”

Growing Together.

Their youngest son Adrian’s first word was “poppy.” Both boys, forage for bouquet scraps and floral treasures that have fallen to the cutting room floor to assemble their own tiny bundles, gifts for mom. “My oldest, Lucas, planted most of my plugs this year, and they help with weeding, washing buckets, harvesting, processing—truly, they do it all,” says Cristina, affirming, “it’s a family activity—it brings us all joy.”

Josh manages the financials and website. Cristina is the creative, overseeing the flower farming and artful flower displays. The kids are farm-hands-of-all-trades, gaining life skills and inspiration along the way and without realizing it, of course.

In fact, flower farming and cultivating creativity in nature teaches a great deal. “I am not in control of anything,” is a take-away for Cristina, who adds, “No matter how much planning or work I put in, everything can change quickly. This has taught me to let go a little bit and take things as they come, pivot, come up with solutions and now dwell.”

For example, pest problems are an unavoidable byproduct of growing edibles or flowers. It’s frustrating. “Every year it seems a new pest comes along, and you have to find preventive measures,” Cristina relates, calling their property an ecosystem of its own. “I have pests my neighbors don’t have.”

Another lesson for Cristina is reflected in the portfolio of beauty growing in the raised beds on their property. Focus. While she dotes over roughly 5,000 tulips, poppies from around the world, and a couple hundred garden roses—you can’t grow it all.

Generally, she grows about 15 different varieties during spring subscription season, backs off when the pests ramp up in the heat of summer, and pops veggies into the ground. This venture also produces lots of leftovers she shares with friends and neighbors. “I’m trying to keep it manageable, and I really have been honing in on what works here, and spring works,” she says.

Reflecting on the journey, she says, “The wildflowers growing on the property were simple, but I loved them and that was the gateway. And what has been the most gratifying is the community of people I have met who have become, really, my best friends solely because of the flowers. It has been an amazing way to be more in touch.” CS

An Eye for Inspiration

PHOTOGRAPHER MARYFRANCES BERGER’S WORK CAPTURES NATURAL BEAUTY AND COASTAL MOMENTS, FRAME BY FRAME

Curiosity and wanderlust guide photo excursions of all kinds for Maryfrances Berger. Some involve a meandering walk up the road to capture images of wildflowers she notices — weeds, too, since they can be quite interesting, she maintains. A natural playground awaits at her doorstep in Ocean View, DE.

“We have the beach, the bay, marshlands, Assateague National and Henlopen State Parks,” she says, naming a ticker of locations that prompt picture-taking close to home. “I can walk on one of the trails and see scenery I want to capture as a landscape.”

Sometimes, she heads out searching for a specific subject and pivots when an entirely different image enters the viewfinder. “I could be looking for wildlife and never see a bird but be taken by the environment around me,” says Berger, who started photography after retirement as a way to “keep my mind busy.”

What developed from there is a passion and now a professional pursuit, with Berger creating a studio, earning invitations to juried shows and displaying works at a growing number of venues. Berger, who is a member of Coastal Camera Club out of Lewes, has displayed at Rehoboth Art League and is often called on to capture beachside family portraits.

When asked how many pictures she takes daily, she says, “I couldn’t even guess!”

But her main objective after a destination shoot is to whittle hundreds of images down to at least half. “And if I have three or four photographs from a day of shooting that I really want to keep in my files, that’s a lot,” says Berger, revealing a practice she acquired from learning the profession, accepting critique and honing a sharp eye for photographic art.

Learning Behind the Lens. Berger often travels down country roads in search of deserted properties and dunescapes, she awakens early to meet sunrise head on with her lens — before vacationers place chairs in the sand. On winter and early spring afternoons, she drives to a modest boardwalk about a mile and a half from her home. “I watch the ocean, listen to the sounds and take pictures,” she says.

She waits, calm, for a subject to catch her eye.

“Photography has taught me patience,” she says. “It has taught me to see the world.”

LOCAL coastal 42 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024

Berger compares this newfound vision to walking into a furniture store, where displays show how to arrange a room, what fabrics to choose, which accessories to select. “In my youth, I would have said, ‘I’ll take that living room right there,’” she relates. “I didn’t have the imagination to see for myself what I could do.”

Berger’s body of work indicates her development and how she has clearly found her style. “If you could see my house now,” she quips. “I now know I can put things together and it’s all because of photography.”

These are some life lessons she has learned from her works that have nothing to do with the mechanics of shooting photos. “I’m always learning and developing my craft,” she says.

Cultivating a Following. Berger recalls the first print she sold—a blue heron. “Now, I have people come to my home, see something they like and we might tweak it a bit,” she says.

Her Facebook and website presence has resulted in inquiries from near and far.

Berger is on a quest for continuous learning and now sharing her work, which is increasingly in demand. She never imagined when she picked up her first Nikon box camera about 10 years ago that it would click into an encore career during retirement. She rewinds to two years ago when painter Damon Pla invited her to set up a tent and display her work at a fine art show.

“I said, ‘I don’t have a tent,’” Berger relates.

“He said, ‘I do,’” she says. “I said, ‘I don’t have any product.’”

Pla suggested, “Take the photos off your walls from home.”

Berger says, “That was the first time I showed my work and last year, I did 10 shows. I’m heading into a busy season this year.”

To novice photographers or anyone interested in giving it a try, Berger recommends joining a camera club. “Ask for help,” she advises.

“You don’t always have to find the beautiful rose,” Berger says, revealing how she finds beauty in natural imperfection. “A petal missing could be a very creative piece. If you see that rose, turn around because you never know what you will see behind you.”

Taking time to soak in surroundings is how Berger has developed an eye for subjects that move people to bring home a print to display in their homes.

Berger says, “In relation to photography, somehow, I see things that captures others’ interest.” CS

Stewards of the Land

IN DORCHESTER COUNTY, ERIC AND KATELIN FRASE EMBARK UPON A NEW VENTURE, VINTAGE FAMILY FARMS, WITH A MISSION TO PRESERVE TRADITIONS AND CREATE A LEGACY OF THEIR OWN BUILT UPON HARD, HONEST WORK

An heirloom is something from the past, treasured in the present. Land may be the greatest of all heirlooms. “We always want to leave the land better than we found it,” Katelin Frase says. She and her husband, Eric, own and operate

Vintage Family Farms based on the premise that the history of the area’s farms and the families and friends who love them are worth preserving.

The couple are both from the Eastern Shore of Maryland—Katelin is from Easton and Eric is from Preston. Their farm spreads

across the northeast corner of Dorchester County, near Hurlock, on acres farmed for centuries. Vintage Family Farms is a new venture for both, but they embrace what farmers have known since the land was first plowed—farming is hard but rewarding work.

VINTAGE BECOMES VIBRANT

It’s tulip season at Vintage Family Farms, but as the weather warms, so, too, does the opportunity for a vast variety of seasonal floral options.

Frases will spend years restoring and nourishing the soil. Both know that the land and their customers appreciate their approach, so they use as few chemicals on their products as possible, always striving to use none.

Most people are divorced from the process of farming, so the Frases created a unique U-Pick option—flowers. Katelin was an environmental science educator for 15 years, so the U-Pick is the most enjoyable aspect of what the farm offers for her because it allows families to have a farm experience. U-Pick flowers are seasonal—tulips are ready from midMarch through mid-April, but the weather dictates when the bright, classic flowers are ready for picking. Other flowers, which include summer annuals like bright, joyful asters and autumn classics like sunflowers are available from mid-June through fall.

Since 80% of the floral industry products are imported and have a high concentration of chemicals to preserve them for an unnaturally long time, Vintage Family Farms is passionate about offering a natural alternative to families, local restaurants and florists.

TRUSTING THE PROCESS

The Frases will spend years restoring and nourishing their farm’s soil.

Fresh heirloom vegetables are Eric’s focus, especially heirloom tomato varieties. He appreciates good food and knows quality ingredients matter. The farm offers delectable tomatoes with names like Sunfired Flare, Green Berkeley Tie Dye and Large Barred Boar—all unashamed to look and taste different from the round, red and mushy kind found in commercial packages. In the first year, the couple planted 120 tomato plants. Then, it grew to 700, and now 900 plants are ready.

More importantly, Vintage Family Farms keeps alive the tradition of food grown in the area but forgotten for decades. There are few places where someone can find White Hayman sweet potatoes—once a staple and named for the sea captain who brought them to the Delmarva Peninsula in the 1850s.

Not only flowers and vegetables are available at the farm. The Frases also raise a line of heritage rabbits—Champagne D’Argent—that are historically significant. This breed is an original homestead rabbit used for pelts and meat. At 10 pounds, this

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Archaeologist and primitive technologist

Dr. Bill Schindler encourages you to change the way you think about food to help you live a happier, healthier and more connected life.

Back to Basics

DR. BILL SCHINDLER IS ON A MISSION TO SHARE HOW YOU CAN THRIVE EATING AS A MODERN HUNTER-GATHERER

There is an obsession with diet and health in the United States

New fads rise like hopeful green shoots from soft spring ground, only to wither in the heat of summer. But instead of developing a new 21st-century way of eating, what if collectively, we look to the past for clues?

In his recent book, Eat Like a Human, Dr. Bill Schindler asks provocative questions and gives profound answers on how to reconnect with our food.

Throughout his childhood and early adulthood, Bill struggled

in his relationship with food. He saw food as something that made him ugly, not a resource that nourished him. In college, as a wrestler for The Ohio State University, he was superficially healthy, but his then obsessive relationship with food led to physical and psychological damage.

Passionate about primitive skills—he has hunted and trapped throughout his life—Bill became a prehistoric and experimental archaeologist. He married Christina and started a family, but he still struggled.

Hours each day, Bill would be in the garage perfecting his stone toolmaking skills. It was his passion. Christina stepped into the garage and asked him a simple question that changed his life and his family. “Can you come inside the house?” she asked. Her question wasn’t about making tools at the kitchen table but deeper, existential. Could he make his passion a practical part of the family? He did.

The desire to bring his knowledge inside to his family birthed a restaurant—Modern Stone Age Kitchen in Chestertown—and a book— Eat Like a Human. The book is the foundation for the restaurant and a testament to 20 years of learning how to nourish his family.

With insightful knowledge and inquisitive thinking, Eat Like a Human challenges many suppositions about dietary progress. Most assume that ancient hunter-gatherers survived on a meager subsistence diet and scraped out a living among gravel and thorns. But he says hunter-gatherers were not worn out and nutritionally deficient but eating a nutrient-dense diet. And the hunter-gatherer food system was sustainable and connected. It hasn’t been like that for centuries. Historically, we are living during the ultimate disconnect from what we eat. “We rely on others to tell us what is in the food,” he says.

Eat Like a Human encourages readers to consider both taste and nutrition. The book outlines a powerful way to think about food, how to look for ingredients high in nutrients, and how to prepare meals to make the nutrients available to our bodies. Bill believes the foundation of a healthy diet is nutrient density and bioavailability. He provides practical steps that are successful in his family and anchors the Modern Stone Age Kitchen restaurant. He knows it works. “I’m very hopeful,” he says, “that people can do this.”

Eat Like a Human is not a book demanding monastic severity during meals. Instead, the book encourages people to enjoy food. “Eating the most nourishing diet should make you feel the best,” he says. No one needs to suffer. What you eat should not be a punishment but the key to living an energetic life connected to food and others.

What can I expect during a primary care visit?

There are three main types of primary care visits: A preventive visit such as an annual physical, Medicare wellness, or well-child appointment; a routine follow-up visit to address chronic medical conditions; and an acute or sick visit. It is important to know what type of visit you are scheduled for so you can plan — and you should always bring your insurance cards to each appointment.

Benefits of preventative visits

A preventative visit is for focusing on general health and wellness. You should bring any forms required by your employer or insurance company to this appointment. Typically, this visit is covered 100 percent by your insurance company and is meant to help address your lifestyle and any changes that are needed for a healthier life, as well as order all appropriate testing and screenings. It is helpful to think about any areas of your lifestyle that could be improved prior to this visit. And you should be asking about your risk of serious medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. If there are any significant findings or concerns discovered during this visit, often a follow-up visit will be needed to address these issues in more detail.

Routine follow-up appointments

During a routine follow-up visit, you and your provider typically review how you are feeling, and how your chronic health conditions are affecting you, along with a review of your medications and possibly any testing that has been completed prior. It is best to complete any ordered lab work so you can discuss any pertinent findings face-to-face. In addition, any interim specialist consults completed, hospitalizations, ER, or urgent care visits are noted.

Sick visits

Lastly, during sick or acute visits, only one or two important or urgent concerns should be addressed. Writing down your questions will help you get the most out of your medical appointments.

A FOREVER HOME IN WEST OCEAN CITY IS REALIZED THANKS TO A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ITS BUILDER, ARCHITECT AND HOMEOWNERS

Tucked into the bucket of a boom lift, David Bradley manned the controls and elevated Victor and Laura Wahba to a potential first-floor height—then up to a second, and finally the top-tier altitude. Views for miles.

West Ocean City’s Inlet Isle was

Shantytown Village before it evolved into a revered bayfront destination for the oncein-a-lifetime builds that Bradley develops for clients. He relates, “I’m the guy that rolled the dice” on a tract of land that had been ignored for some 15 years.

“I took a chance four years ago and bought one lot,” he says.

The results sprawl before them.

The owner of Damascus-and-Ocean Citybased Bradley Construction, Inc., has helped reimagine and reinvigorate a prime stretch of beachfront property, including the Wahba’s family retreat.

There was reason for the boom-lift ride, aside from showcasing real estate. The trip up ultimately informed the floor plan—whether to place bedrooms up or down, for instance.

62 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024

GOING UP Utilizing a boom-lift allowed design/builder David Bradley to help Victor and Laura Wahba uniquely experience the views from various levels of their future home in Inlet Isle.

“That helped them visualize,” Bradley relates. “Then once they signed the contract, we went back up on the lift and toasted with champagne.”

The Wahbas had spent the previous six years weekending and boating in nearby Selbyville, DE. After spending more time there during the pandemic, they decided the time was right to find a spot where they could dock out back and create a beachbound retreat.

During design, the project admittedly grew, exceeding the initial scope. “We decided this is where we want to retire—this is going to be our house,” Laura relates. As first-time grandparents, there was an equal desire to include the “build it and they will come” amenities.

Enlisting in Bradley Construction with architect Van Franke, no detail was spared during the design-build process. “Laura had a floor plan in her head, and she began conveying that through her own drawings and lots of images,” Franke says.

Laura didn’t keep track of the hours dedicated to Pinterest scrolling, though nights sometimes crept into early mornings.

coastal HOME

“This whole house was built on Pinterest,” says Laura, revealing her bookkeeper sensibility and sharp Excel prowess, while explaining the folders she created for each space. Filing inspo for every surface, fixture, furnishing, accoutrement— not to mention the floorplan—she systematically styled a destination home to anchor a family with grown children living out of town.

A seamless collaboration with Bradley and Franke ultimately sprouted new friendships that sustain with gatherings in a completed home that represents the Wahbas.

“David is an artist, and his art is building houses,” Laura affirms, adding that Franke’s shared vision supported the design. “He was right on it.”

Laura named the bayside residence “Shanty Sur Mer,” a nod to the property’s fishing village history. Shanty it is not.

All told, the home contains five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, a media room, offices, loft, multiple gathering spaces, mud room, working pantry and elevator—and naturally, a spacious great room, generous porch walk-outs, a dining area and grand great room.

Laura says, “We decided, ‘This is the one house where we are not going to cut back.’”

Haute Height. Insistent on a white-brick fireplace that climbs the height of a two-story great room, no alternative would do. A sleek, gas fireplace offers a warming factor, and custom wall paneling and millwork enrich white walls with dimension. Natural light floods through a pair of long windows flanking the fireplace surround, and convenient Shaker-style cabinetry offers storage with stylized hardware in a rope-like aesthetic called Grooved.

64 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024
SEARCH PARTY Homeowner Laura Wahba left no stone unturned in her inspirational journey through Pinterest to discover elements she could incorporate into her Inlet Isle residence.

As for a wall-mounted television, Laura hesitated. The couple instead decided on a frame TV that showcases artwork and photos when not in use.

The Wahbas could have opted to trade out the entire extra floor of headroom for more second-story space, but Bradley suggested this stately approach. Mission accomplished. “It takes square footage from the house to

accomplish that, but we pulled it off and it capitalizes on the views,” he says.

Maintaining a floorplan designed for entertaining, the great room flows directly into a dining area with a sprawling table that seats 10 before moving toward a kitchen with a generous island and surface area for prepping, serving and simply gathering.

Happy Accidents, Intentional Detail. The Gold D’Or marble countertop and backsplash with tidal-esque movement and dramatic gold veining was a happy accident, Laura says. Initially, she selected a quartz surface with a mishmash colorscape because “I wanted it to be like art.”

She didn’t love it. “I was picking it out because it was different.”

So, when the cabinet provider delivered so-called bad news that the quartz was backordered for six months, Laura saw this as an invitation to seek out a just-right slab for the purely white kitchen with layers of detail.

For example, mission-style legs on the island deliver a tailored air of formality—a furniture feel. Honey bronze hardware complements subtle glitz on surfaces, and a milky-white apron sink looks out over the bay through a wall of windows and a generous length of storage beneath them.

Basket-weave bar stools introduce texture while wide-plank CoreTech flooring in a sand tone warms the wide-open room.

Franke adds, “The floor plan is very intentional with the kitchen located right off the mudroom so kids can come in from the pool, migrate through the space where there’s a powder room, and flow into the kitchen and two-story great room.”

“David is an artist. He has such an eye for design and construction. His homes may not resemble a painting, but when he’s finished, they are a work of art. I consider him family.”
— Laura Wahba

Bedrooms, All Together. Rather than the inverted floorplan common along the shore, the Wahbas maintained a traditional arrangement of all-upstairs bedrooms. By adding an elevator—concealed by wood paneling to blend in with walls—the decision was a no-brainer. Access would not be an issue.

The five-bedroom home includes a bunk space and spacious master suite with a dressing room outfitted by California Closets. Carving an attached office space with pocket-door privacy and extras such as a coffee bar and built-in fridge allows for convenient workspace for her. His is on the main level.

A curbless shower in the master bath shower features herringbone-cut marble and, again, water views. An ivory freestanding tub sits diagonally in front of a square window that frames the dunescape beyond it. Above is a luxe chandelier dripping with mother-of-pearl.

Come Together. Rather than outfitting every bedroom with a private balcony and ensuite, which allows guests privacy yet also promotes some level of isolation, Laura opted for a mezzanine-level gathering space with a communal walk-out balcony. “I don’t want friends and family to live in their rooms like a hotel,” she relates.

Every bedroom has access to its own full bathroom, however. And purposeful spots to stop and breathe in the views punctuate a horseshoe-shaped hallway overlooking the main level living area. For instance, a set of settees look out over the bay, and a thoughtfully placed side table with stools provides a perch for aperitifs.

Make way to the top level “boat loft”—an apropos nickname for the way stairs ascend ladder-style by a shiplap feature wall into entertainment central, where there’s an ancillary kitchen space. Headroom over the stairwell was borrowed to create a bar-height builtin surface with more space to set appetizers while offering a measure of safety for young ones. No leaning over and falling down the landing.

The Wahbas fully leverage and appreciate the home and its capacity for bringing loved ones together to make lifelong memories. “The dream was to have a party house at the beach, and this is so much more,” Laura says, relating that through the process of designing and selecting every detail, the home is very much “our life.”

“It has its own personality, and everything we picked was so special,” she says. “It’s exactly what we hoped it would be.” CS

Maritime Masterpiece

A SPA CREEK YACHT CLUB PROPERTY CENTERED IN A HISTORIC NAUTICAL SETTING OFFERS ELEVATED FINISHES, A WIDE-OPEN FLOOR PLAN AND ALL THE TRAPPINGS FOR ENTERTAINING IN STYLE

In search of a weekend-away destination delivering waterfront views, walkable dining and not the typical busy beachfront vibe, the Roeders happened upon this three-story residence on Spa Creek in South Annapolis Yacht Centre (SAYC). Here, they found an intersection of heritage, harbor culture and elevated living. Pyramid Builders had completed the exterior and bones of this and neighboring properties. The site was ready for interior selections and customization, which became a passion project for Susan Roeder, offering a happy dichotomy of creative to balance her natural analytical mindset as a CPA.

70 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024

The process was a fulfilling shift from Excel to Instagram. Admittedly, some spreadsheets entered the picture with Susan at the helm organizing selections.

Susan’s vision was to establish a clean yet layered look, accomplished with millwork, hand-painted tile, beam and coffer detail, and a consistency of materials while playing with pattern. Case in point: a herringbone inset within otherwise linear hardwood floor creates a rug effect.

Ultimately, location drew the Roeders to the property, she says.

“It’s a maritime paradise,” says Realtor Scott Wallace, Coldwell Banker Realty, calling out dock space that can accommodate up to a 135-foot yacht, the deep waters of Spa Creek, and protection from gales—yet access to the Chesapeake Bay.

From any rear deck on the threestory residence, you can see the Naval Academy Cathedral, the state house and watch the drawbridge rise to allow leeway for sailboats and ships.

“It’s idyllic in that way,” Wallace relates, noting the property on the opposite side of Spa Creek is the Charles Carroll House. “To have views of where Carrol—a signer of the Declaration of Independence—hosted events with George Washington is truly unique.”

The complementary interior is refined with some bold details throughout and, as the Roeders hoped, designed for leisure and gathering.

SOOTHING SURROUNDINGS

Tranquility awaits in the primary bathroom as a wall of gorgeous, custom tiles help to establish its atmosphere.

Open-Air

Aesthetic.

Accordion glass doors on all three levels overlooking Spa Creek fold back completely to usher in sea breezes and natural light while providing unobstructed views. It’s the ultimate artwork and explains clean-lined selections throughout the home that to not interfere with vistas.

“Having door walls that opened into outdoor entertaining spaces was a real draw,” Susan says. Sleek, black-framed windows are a defining finish against the crisp, white Hardie cedar shake interior. Resilient Ipe decking withstands waterfront elements.

Surface Statements. “The tile is the icing on the cake,” Susan says. She collaborated with Fireclay Tile, which created renderings for its hand-painted tiles based on her color selections and design inspiration. For instance, in the primary bathroom, a wall of tile behind the expansive double vanity in a pattern called Palmera is “very soothing,” she says, with its blue-and-sand palette and star-like markings.

72 CoastalStyleMag.com • March/April 2024

From any rear deck on the three-story residence, you can see the Naval Academy Cathedral, the state house and watch the drawbridge rise to allow leeway for sailboats and ships.

There’s an optical illusion at play with this and other tile patterns in the home.

“The pattern almost moves,” Susan relates of the poinsettia-shaped flower markings that sometimes appear as a star.

In the guest room ensuite, tile flooring in a pattern called Star and Cross in a diagonal overlay treatment incorporates navy blue “stars” and tusk-colored “crosses.” They seem to take turns in the forefront. In the adjacent curbless shower, glass tile walls reflect light off the floor’s seamless crisscross pattern. “Looking into the shower, the floor tile appears to change color,” she describes.

Fittingly Finished. Maintaining the wideopen-space feel, the culinary center of the home’s main (center) level rushes out to dining and living room areas and on to a balcony that’s a room in itself. With an eye for detail, Susan selected a range hood of blackened stainless steel with antique patina brass accent bands. Pulls and knobs from Restoration Hardware in antiqued brass connect the dots.

Inviting slate cabinetry into the mix for the island and an adjacent beverage and serving area, adds depth to the space. And as with every room in this Annapolis home, finishes play second fiddle to the landscape beyond.

Making the Most of Millwork.

A sophisticated furniture look is accomplished on what might otherwise exist as flat cabinets, distracting appliances or typical ceilings. Inviting custom woodwork into the design while maintaining a consistent color swatch adds subtle texture and a top-shelf outcome.

Case in point: A rich cherry-stained wood panel backsplash in the main-level powder room. “The wooden family is more of a stained finish so you can see the grain throughout, and the top [quartz] surface has a leather finish,” Susan says.

Layers upon layers were executed in a reserved manner.

In the master ensuite, drawers and doors are indistinguishable with a façade that appears as 15 identical “drawer” panels but, in fact, only the top five pull out, the rest opening for ample storage. Kitchen appliances are concealed behind cabinetry, as well. Ceiling beams add warmth to generous headspace.

MARITIME PARADISE

Outfitted for Guests. The property includes two main suites—a master on the third floor, appointed with a dressing room with all the trappings, and a suite on the lower level with living space that flows out to a deck. The mid-level along with living spaces offers a guest bedroom, for a total of 4,660 square feet, three bedrooms and four bathrooms.

There was a lot of room to fill in the home’s hull, Susan acknowledges. The couple opted to carve out a designated and sizable seating space that washes out to the deck. A workspace and ensuite full bathroom finish off what is essentially a home within a home for guests.

This isn’t the first custom rodeo for the couple, having built over the years in various destinations. But Susan points to the craftsmanship, uncommon detail and spirit of designing this interior as a most memorable, fulfilling experience.

That is, until whatever comes next. CS

HOME coastal Coastal and elevated is C&E Furniture + Design, a boutiquestyle furniture store and interior design firm in Fenwick Island, DE, serving clients who value curated designs. A business that began with furnishings has evolved to offer several programs of interior design service, says owner Katie Winnington, who taps her boundless creativity and nearly two decades of experience to guide a collaborative, vision-driven process for clients.

Coastal Style sat down with Katie to learn what to seek in a design partner when embarking on a whole-house renovation, furnishing a home or sourcing just the right piece for an already completed floor plan. Plus, she shares some on-trend coastal cues to incorporate into the home.

LET’S GET SOCIAL

Find more inspiration on IG @cefurniture and at cefurniture.com.

How does the design and selection process start from projects small and large? From the beginning, I wanted to bring a design-firm level experience to everyone we worked with, even if it was selecting something as simple as a sofa. No matter the scope of a project, the C&E team personally visits the space, measures, develops a to-scale floor plan and offers recommendations on a design board. Basically, we’re there to hold your hand through the entire process by offering a more elevated buying experience.

How does the C&E design process accommodate a range of interior design requirements? We offer three levels of design service with the idea being we can meet clients wherever they are in a project. Full Home Design is typically for new construction or a large-scale renovation. We assist with interior selections and manage all aspects of design from the time you break ground until furniture installation.

Full Furnishing Design involves various scopes—such as furnishing an entire home or just one room. Shop Design services is for those who already have many pieces they want but need help finding those final few items to pull the design together.

When looking for an interior design partner, find out how the firm tailors services to what you need. Flexibility is also important because the scope of a project can evolve.

Any tips for carrying out a coastal and elevated aesthetic with the latest touches? I love incorporating organic elements with lots of neutrals and soft tonal pops of color while adding modern lines and mixed materials. (I really consider that our wheelhouse.) Some signature pieces and relevant designs include lots of texture, rattan accents, stone like marble and travertine, and chunky fabrics such as boucle. Also, curves and scalloped details are having a big moment. CS

Spring Salmon & Veggie Grain Bowl

Ingredients

8 oz piece salmon fillet, skin removed

1 cup quinoa, cooked

1 cup arugula, baby spinach or broccoli

1 avocado

½ cup sunflower sprouts

1 carrot, shaved (optional)

Salt and pepper

Instructions

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Season the salmon with salt and pepper, then place on an oiled grill or grill pan. When grill marks appear on the first side, after about 4 minutes, flip and grill for a few more minutes. It should take about 10 minutes total, though you can remove it earlier if you like your salmon medium-rare. Remove from grill and let rest. Note: You can also cook the salmon in an airfryer at 390° for 18-20 minutes.

Use a vegetable peeler to create thin, long ribbons from the carrots. In a serving bowl, place a scoop of quinoa, a small handful of baby spinach and the sunflower sprouts. Halve avocado and add a few slices to the bowl. Add carrot shavings, if desired, and top with salmon.
