District 3 pitcher Makenna Blades sends a pitch to homeplate in the girls’ 9-5 win over East in the opening game on Monday, Aug. 3.

Delaware District 3 holds on for win over East in World Series opener By Jason Feather Staff Reporter There is a sense that the girls from Delaware District 3 collectively have a chip on their shoulders at this year’s Little League Senior League Softball World Series. The host team broke out the bats early and scored often in the Game 1 opener, holding on for a

9-5 win over the East Region champions from Conneaut Lake Area Little League in Pennsylvania on Monday, Aug. 3. The Delaware District 3 team scored a run in the second before adding five more in the third and three more in the fourth for the opening win in their Pool A game. Pitcher Cierra Lewis — a rising

junior at Sussex Technical High School — was stellar in the circle, covering the first three innings and allowing just three hits, and offset two walks with three strikeouts. Makenna Blades — a rising senior at Sussex Academy — came on in relief, and was charged with allowing five See GAME 1 page 4

The District 3 girls were in good spirits before and during the game.

Game 1 Continued from page 3 runs (four earned) by the East on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Makayla Eikenberry tossed shutout ball over the final 1.2 innings in this one, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts. Kimora Harris swung the biggest bat for Delaware District 3, going 3-

for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored on the night. The shortstop is heading into her senior season at Sussex Central High School. Leftfielder Emma Jackson — a rising junior at Sussex Central — was 3for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Jordynn Bowe — a rising junior at Cape Henlopen High School — had a two-run double during the five-run second inning.

Ady Lutz also had a double, with Journey Hearne adding a pair of hits (triple), while Lewis recorded the other hit for the host team. East was led by Nina Brewster, who had a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, Joslyn Mihoci (2-for-3, a run and an RBI) and Allison Kosinski (2-for-2, a run, an RBI). Rylee Beebe, Alex Dugan and Jocelyn Jordan (RBI) also had hits for the East champs.

From everyone in our community, congratulations to the District III team! Thank you for representing us with pride and sportsmanship. We wish you continued success and the very best of luck this week!

Most of the girls on this year’s roster were on the 2025 team for Delaware District 3, which had an impressive performance last year that saw them get all the way to the championship game, only to be no-hit by Central in a 10-0 loss. They want to get back to the championship game and change the outcome of that bitter ending from last year. They are well on their way after their first game.

State Representative Ron Gray 38th District

Turmel tames Southeast as Canada notches 10-0 win By Mike Stern Staff Reporter Kassandra Turmel was in complete control. The righthanded hurler toed the pitching rubber for her Canada regional championship team, and delivered a combination of high velocity fastballs and frustrating changeups. She also consistently hit her spots en route to striking out 11 batters while tossing a dazzling two-hit completegame shutout victory as Canada defeated the Southeast regional champs,

10-0, on Monday, Aug. 3, on Lyons Field on the opening day of pool play at the 50th anniversary edition of the Little League Senior League Softball World Series. The event is being held at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana, Del., and continues through this Sunday, Aug. 9. Canada, which is represented by On Field Little League from the Montreal suburb of Repentigny, Quebec, supported Termel with plenty of offense. They grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on a dropped

pop-fly in shallow centerfield. The victors added five runs in the fifth inning, to take a 7-0 lead. Julia Collard and Sarah Fitoussi each ripped RBI-singles, while Lexy Launiere added a run-scoring groundout and two more markers scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error. In the visitors’ seventh, Alexia Gagliano slammed an impressive threerun homer high over the centerfield fence that was last seen heading toward Frankford, Del. The Southeast regional champions, represented by Irmo Little League in

Irmo, S.C., threatened to score in the home half of the first inning. Addy Broughton reached base on an infield error, and Savanna Padgett singled to put runners on first and second with one out. But Kate Shealy lined into a double play as shortstop Gagliano snared the ball and tossed it to secondbaseman Lexy Launiere to end the threat. Mindy Veler smacked the only other hit for Southeast, which did not reach third base until the seventh inning.

Jackson powers Central over West in their Series-opening win By Jason Feather Staff Reporter Some teams walk onto a field and hope they have a chance to win, while others walk onto a field and know they have a chance to win. Then there’s the Central Regional champs from Michigan District 4 in Grand Blanc, Mich. When they walk on the field, they have the confidence, swagger and faith in themselves that it’s going to take the

other team’s best game to beat them. Yes, they are just as good as last year’s team that rolled over the competition to the Little League Senior League Softball World Series title. Addison Taylor is just as dominant in the circle, and the offense has the power and ability to score runs in bunches. That was all on display in the Central champs’ opening game against the West Regional champs from Honolulu, Hawaii, on Monday, Aug. 3, in an 11-1 rout.

Ayannah Jackson was a perfect 3for-3, with a home run, double and single, to go along with three runs scored and an RBI. Adysen Freeman also doubled and homered as part of her 2-for-3 night, with three runs scored and two RBIs. Reagan Allen chipped in a 2-for2 effort with two runs scored and an RBI. Hannah Johnson smoked a home run as part of her two-runs-scored and two-RBI night. Mackenzie Jackson, Makenna Kresbaugh and Alaina Trotter

also had hits for the Central squad. Taylor covered all five innings in this one, allowing just two hits and the one run with seven strikeouts and three walks. She threw 54 of her 83 pitches for strikes while facing 21 West batters. Addison Wong and Taylor Retuta each had one hit for West, with Paisley Sue Aoki knocking in the lone run on a fielder’s choice that scored Retuta in the bottom of the third inning.

By Mike Stern Staff Reporter Their hitting only improved as the game continued. The Latin America regional champs proudly strode onto Lyons Field on Monday, Aug. 3, and pounded out 14 hits — many of them in the middle and late innings. They finished nicely, with a 14-2 triumph over the Southwest regional titlist on the opening day of pool play at the 50th anniversary edition of the Little League Senior League Softball World Series. The event is being held at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana, Del., and continues through this Sunday, Aug. 9. Latin America, which is represented by Cantar Little League from Sao Paulo, Brazil, took an early lead and never looked back. They grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the visitors’ second inning on an RBI-single by Ticiane Ito. Carolina Dia doubled the lead to 2-0 with a fourth-inning

home run. Latin America took advantage of Southwest miscues to add three more runs in the fifth frame and increase their advantage to 5-0 lead. They added nine more runs in the last two innings to win going away. In the sixth inning, Mariana Sonoda ripped a two-run double, Beatriz Nagasawa smacked a run-scoring two-bagger, and Karen Takahama added an RBIsingle. In the seventh frame, Sonoda added another two-run double, Karen Takahama drilled an RBI-double and another run scored on an error. Sonoda finished the game with four RBIs and three runs scored. The Latin America team’s explosive offense backed the solid pitching of Isabela Tavaraya. The righthander scattered seven hits over six innings. The Southwest regional champs, who are represented by Northwest Little League in San Antonio, Texas, scored single runs in the fifth on an RBI-double by Mia Mesa and in the sixth on an error.

West takes out Canada on Day 2 By Jason Feather Staff Reporter The team from Honolulu, Hawaii, couldn’t seem to get things going on Day 1 when they fell in their opener, 10-1, to U.S. Central, but the bats certainly came alive on Day 2 in their contest against Canada. Down 5-0 after three innings, West would score three in the fourth, one in the fifth, five in the sixth and another six in the seventh, to come from behind

for the 15-9 victory. The win evened their record at 1-1 in Pool B. Haylie-Sean Reiny and Hunter Jackson led the West’s 15-hit attack with three hits each, with Reiny and Madisyn Ueyama scoring three times each for the winners. Taryn Ho and Kyla Estes both knocked in three runs for West. Destiny Tautofi picked up the win in the circle for West after going 4.2 innings to start the game. Taja Souza took over in relief to finish off the final 2.1

innings to preserve the win. Tautofi allowed seven runs on seven hits, with only three of the runs being earned. Souza allowed two runs on three hits, with only one of the runs being earned. The West came to the World Series after an undefeated 7-0 run through the regional tournament in Missoula, Mont. They didn’t just go flawless in the regional, but they were simply dominating, outscoring their opponents 107-10. That’s an average of 15.3 runs per game, while allowing just 1.4.

Canada had its chances in this one, actually holding that initial 5-0 lead through the first three innings before the West’s bats woke up. Canada got on the board in the first as Josie Wright scored on a fielder’s choice. They scored another one in the second when Erin Finney singled to center, scoring Daphne Fleming. A three-run third had Canada feel-

Central bashes USA Southeast in day game By Darin J. McCann Executive Editor While World Series organizers have found themselves fortunate to dodge some potential storms that could have impacted the beginning of this tournament, there was no shortage of thunder coming from the USA Central bats as they hammered USA Southeast 15-5 at the Senior League Softball World Series on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Alaina Trotter smashed two home runs, including one in Central’s ninerun second inning, to lead the way for the team from Grand Blanc, Mich.

Things started out well for Southeast, which hails from Irmo, S.C. Mindy Veler led things off with a double to center and ended up scoring on a clean single by Savanna Padgett, to give Southeast a 1-0 lead. Central didn’t take long to answer, plating two in their half of the first. Ayannah Jackson smoked a double to plate Reagan Allen, and then came around later in the inning on a groundout by Adysen Freeman to push Central’s lead to 2-1. After a quiet top of the second, things got very noisy in the bottom half of the frame. After Ella Stevenson and

Addison Taylor walked, Trotter blasted her first home run of the game over the leftfield fence to give Central a 5-1 lead. Following a double by Allen, Jackson hit a home run to left, and Central was off to the races. Taylor hit a three-run homer later in the inning, and Central had a commanding 11-1 lead after two innings. Southeast inched closer in the third inning, when Padgett hit a double to center to plate Veler and Addy Broughton, and then picked up another run on a single by Rilynn Earle. Southeast narrowed it again, to 11-5, in the fourth inning on a single by Pad-

gett, but Stevenson led off the fourth with a homerun, and Trotter followed two batters later with her second of the game. A double by Freeman pushed the lead to 14-5, and Kaitlyn Brennan doubled-in Kate Mitchell in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 15-5 and end the game due to the 10-run rule. Danielle Golen picked up the win on the mound, surrendering five earned runs in three innings, and Taylor threw two shutout innings in relief. For Southeast, Emma Grace Birchmore gave up seven earned in one inning of work and was followed by Kat Goff and Charity West.

Clutch defensive play at plate helps Southeast to win By Mike Stern Staff Reporter The third time was a charm for the Southeast regional champs. The team from Irmo, S.C., had already lost two games in pool play of the 50th anniversary of the Little League Senior League Softball World Series being held at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana. A third setback would’ve jeopardized their chances of qualifying for the next round. That’s when catcher Malia Lewis saved the day. Southeast led 4-3 in the seventh inning with one out and the tying run at third base when Johana Berankova laid down a squeeze bunt. The Europe Africa baserunner at third raced toward home plate on contact and slid in an attempt to score the tying run. Lewis alertly pounced on the spinning softball, blocked the plate and applied the tag for the second out. Southeast righthanded pitcher Kate Shealy retired the next hitter to give her team the 4-3 win on Tuesday, Aug. 4, its first victory of the midsummer tourney. “I knew the baserunner was coming on the suicide squeeze bunt,” said Lewis after her team improved to 1-2 in the tournament. “I got to the ball quickly and was able to block the plate and make the tag. I’m very happy with the victory and so are my teammates.” Lewis also delivered the game-winning run by smacking an infield grounder that chased home teammates Savanna Padgett and Shealy to give Southeast a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth frame. Shealy had tied the game at 2-2 earlier in the inning with a fielder’s choice infield grounder. Shealy gave her team a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she led off with a towering solo home run to leftcenter field. Europe Africa (0-1), which is represented by the Europe & Africa Republic 01 Little League in Prague, Czechia, tied the game at 1-1 in the

Asia-Pacific cruises past East By Jason Feather Staff Reporter It was a long day with two games for Asia-Pacific on Tuesday, Aug. 4, but they made it a short night cruising to a 10-0 mercy rule win over East on Layton Field. Asia-Pacific managed only seven hits overall, but took advantage of five East errors, scoring five times in the third inning, once in the fourth, and two times each in the fifth and sixth after being shut out the first two innings. Sheena Panteria had three of those seven hits for Asia-Pacific with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI. Ladryl Gerodias (two runs), Erikca Mae Gonzales, Jax Katiana Efrain Fontillas, and Releine Evangelista (two RBI, run scored) had the other hits for the winners. Carlene Jade Santos came on in relief to pick up the win after starter Princess Lyza Sioson tossed just one inning allowing two hits. Santos went five innings, struck out seven, and surrendered just one hit. East struggled to find any consistency at the plate with Joslyn Mihoci, Rylee Beebe and Alex Dugan picking up the only hits in the game. Beebe was the starting pitcher in the circle for East, going 2.2 innings while allowing just one hit, but walked five with five strikeouts. Only two of the five runs scored on her were earned. Nina Brewster came on with 2.2 innings of relief that saw the right-hander allow six hits and five runs (three earned) with two strikeouts and a walk. The biggest offensive threat for East came in the top of the second when they had runners at second and third with just one out, but a strikeout and fly out ended the early hope for the girls from Conneaut Lake, Pa.

District 3 pounds out 12 hits in 12-2 win over Southwest Coastal Point • Joe Maciey

District 3 pitcher Cierra Lewis sends a pitch to homeplate in D3’s 12-2 win over Southwest on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

By Mike Stern Staff Reporter They were not the most hospitable of hosts. The Delaware District 3 champs (2-0), who pounded out 12 hits for a 12-2 victory over the Southwest regional champs on Tuesday, Aug. 4, are referred to as the host team for the 50th anniversary of the Little League Senior League Softball World Series being held at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana. But competitive softball requires an aggressive attack at home plate, and that’s just what the host team delivered. Kimora Harris ripped two hits and drove in four runs, Ava Brock’s three hits drove in four more runs and Karly Kruger added two hits to drive in three runs. Harris got the hit parade started in the first inning with a two-run double that gave Delaware a 2-0 lead. In the second frame, Journey Hearne ripped an RBI double, Kruger slapped a sacrifice fly RBI and Harris smacked a two-run homer to expand the lead to 6-1. See GAME 10 page 22
