A csequential semiquincentennial Celebrations abound for nation’s 250th

By Darin J. McCann | Executive Editor There might be a little bit of debate over when exactly Delaware jumped on the whole “Independent-State-As-Part-of-TheUnited-States” train, but there is certainly none over the allegiance and patriotism of those early Delawareans.

And, judging by the array of celebrations across the First State this year, there should be no debate over the current state of the state, either.

As Delawareans join their compatriots across these fruited plains marking the 250th birthday of the United States, an impressive list of events and celebrations have

taken shape. From events along the beaches to inland festivals to historic recreations of 18th century life in Delaware, the Small Wonder is giving residents and visitors an opportunity to honor the nation’s 250th anniversary.

At the start So, Delaware earned its title, “the First State,” because it was the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution, on Dec. 7, 1787. That day is honored every year, with Dec. 7 being dubbed Delaware Day. Obviously, this did not take place in 1776, which is the anniversary being celebrated nationwide with the — say it with

me — semiquincentennial.

That being said, the State of Delaware’s website says, “Delaware became a state on June 15, 1776, when the Delaware Assembly formally adopted a resolution declaring an end to Delaware’s status as a colony of Great Britain and establishing the three counties as an independent state under the authority of ‘the Government of the Counties of New Castle, Kent and Sussex Upon Delaware.’

Following the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the leaders organized a constitutional convention, and on Sept. 11, 1776, that convention enacted the Delaware Declaration of the Bill of Rights — which was a bit of a precursor to the U.S. Bill

of Rights. Just 10 days later, the convention enacted the first Delaware Constitution. After a few tweaks and changes, the fourth, and current, constitution was enacted in 1897, and Delaware now utilizes a cabinet form of government.

We can debate the precise date Delaware officially became a “state” as we know it today, but there is no wiggle room in whether or not Delaware was on board, or whether it was first. It was, and it was.

Celebrations along the shore As it did 250 years ago, Delaware feels an enormous amount of pride in this still relatively-new nation of states, and the slate of events commemorating the — here we go — semiquincentennial, is impressive.

• Bethany Beach is honoring the nation, and Delaware’s place in it, with their immensely popular Independence Day celebrations — dubbed, “Stars, Stripes & Shorelines” this July. This year also celebrates Bethany Beach’s 125 years as an incorporated town, so the energy promises to be electric.

The Bethany Beach Independence Day Parade will take place on Friday, July 3, at noon in downtown Bethany Beach.

That evening, The Funsters will perform on the Bethany Beach bandstand from 7:30 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, July 4, Uncaged will perform on the bandstand, also from 7:30 to 9 p.m., followed by a fireworks show.

Also, on Thursday, June 25, South Coastal Library is hosting a free presentation by Daniel Pritchett from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the creation and rescue of the Declaration of Independence. The presentation is free for those 18 or older, and no registration is required.

There will also be a Rocking the Docks Waterfront Celebration on July 2, at the Lewes Ferry Grounds, which is billed as “a massive commemoration in partnership with the Delaware Semiquincentennial Commission.” It will feature

ancestral lands of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, Millsboro embodies the diverse stories that have woven the fabric of our nation for two and a half centuries,” said organizers. “From our early settlers and Native American heritage to the hardworking families, veterans, innovators and neighbors who call Millsboro home today, our local history reflects the broader American journey of resilience, community and opportunity.”

The Town, in conjunction with the Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce, will have its popular Stars & Stripes celebration on Saturday, June 27, from 2 to 9 p.m., followed by a fireworks show. This will take place in downtown Millsboro (Main Street) and W.B. Atkins Park. Activities will include a parade, touch-a-truck, caricature and balloon artists, live music, and a kids’ zone with inflatables, facepainting and games. • Georgetown is the county seat for Sussex, the most central town in the county.

The Georgetown Spirit of 1776 Artisan & Craft festival will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at South Race Street and East Pine Street. There will be artisans, crafts, food vendors, live performances and a scavenger hunt. For more information, email America250@georgetowndel.com.

The Georgetown Public Library is also hosting dedicated DE250 historical programs, which can be found at Georgetown.lib.de.us.

Around the state The State of Delaware is executing more than 50 events, historical programs and interactive events throughout the year, under the umbrella of Delaware 250 (delaware250.org). The website has a full list of events and activities to celebrate the — here we go again — semiquincentennial, including educational and cultural initiatives, arts and music, historical tours and more.

One of the standouts is the Wilmington Riverfront Fourth of July celebration, for what promises to be a “once-in-a-generation” Independence Day celebration with activities, food and fireworks.

Downtown Wilmington’s Rodney Square will be the host of a free USA Boxing-sanctioned outdoor evening of amateur fights on June 26, which will also feature live music, food trucks and a drone lightshow.

There will also be an Echoes of Freedom event at the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, which will tell the story of 250 years of the United States through operatic storytelling.

and they are all interconnected — that is what I find most enjoyable. I think that’s one of the nicest things about being down here,” he said.

“Maybe people don’t use all that. Maybe they just go from here to the store, and that’s OK. But they have the ability to go from spot to spot to spot. You can go from Fenwick up to Cape Henlopen to Lewes, and now you can go to Georgetown. That’s a lot of miles and a diverse kind of scenery,” said Hinman, a Wilmington native who didn’t bike as an adult until he moved to Bethany Beach.

And why not? Riding a bicycle is, as comedian Robin Williams observed, “the closest you can get to flying.”

Whether for weight loss, to put a brake on the daily stresses of life or for the enjoyment of being outdoors, biking is the

perfect activity.

“And it’s flat here,” Bethany Beach Town Councilman Mickey Hinman said.

He and Councilwoman Theresa Keil co-chair the Town’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Committee, and Hinman regularly rides.

“Being able to go from the ocean side to the bay side, to the inland bays, to state parks to shopping areas to boardwalks —

the sport, going by himself or with his wife.

“I go from my house up to the inlet, loop around the inlet, through Fresh Pond, and I come out in Ocean View, loop around the back of Bethany, sometimes to South Bethany. It’s about a 90- or 100-minute ride,” Hinman said.

For Keil, awareness of surroundings while biking is the most important aspect.

“Biking, you go with traffic. When you’re walking, you want to face traffic for your own safety. Wear a helmet. Wear bright colors. Wear white or bright colors, so people can see you. Use a bike light. We have a lot of dark roads. A lot of J1 [international] students who work at restaurants — all the uniforms are black, so when these kids are riding home, nobody can see them.

Safety while biking is also important to Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer, who is an avid biker as well.

He bikes not only for good health and to benefit the environment, but as a smart means of transportation. He often rides on

local trails, but he isn’t the only governor to support the sport.

Former Gov. Jack Markell, who was in office 2009 to 2017, led annual Tour de Delaware bike rides and biked across the country in 2017, traveling 3,680 miles from Oregon to Delaware during a 50-day trip.

Although most bikers won’t pedal that far, they can enjoy rides across the Indian River Inlet Bridge, which has a biking and walking path separated from traffic, or along the Assawoman Bay at Fenwick Island State Park. Fresh Pond Park near Bethany Beach has a nature trail, as does Cape Henlopen State Park. Cyclists also like the loop from Cat Hill in South Bethany to the Bethany Beach boardwalk and the Seashore Bike route through Delaware Seashore State Park.

They can ride on the Bethany Beach and Ocean City, Md., boardwalks, at designated times. Also in Ocean City, Northside Park on 125th Street is perfect for biking, as are the Assateague Island National Seashore, West Ocean City Nature Park, Assawoman Canal Trail and streets of

Ocean City.

Cyclists can find a basketful of information online, including at www.bicycling.com, where articles include topics such as bicycling for weight loss, the best helmets, deals on electric bikes, biking to work, what makes cycling safer and the best bike pumps and racks for cars. Cyclists will find details about skills necessary to make the sport affordable, training routines, tips for beginners and the importance of getting enough protein and water to prevent feeling tired after a ride.

Regardless of the destination, safety is important.

The section on bicycle safety on the Delaware Office of Highway Safety website, at www.ohs.delaware.gov, warns the number of cyclists killed or injured continues to increase and urges cyclists to stay focused, never drink or use drugs while biking, wear safety equipment and know the rules of the road since a bicycle is considered a vehicle.

a helmet, not being visible to vehicles, riding in the wrong direction, riding on the sidewalk, not paying attention or looking at cell phones while riding.

“I could never ride without holding the handlebars. Some people are so used to it that that is how they ride. You see them going down Route 26 through Bethany doing that, while looking at their cell phones. At the Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Committee, we are trying to address those kinds of behaviors. We can do a lot of things, and we are doing a lot of things, from the infrastructure, building the big crosswalk on Routes 1 and 26 to allow pedestrians to be able to traverse one of the busiest intersections in Delaware.

“We are going to do the crosswalks on Route 26 a little farther up, but even doing all those things, people still have to exercise judgment to use all that stuff the right way. Some people say we need another sign or we need something painted on the road. After a while, people don’t even pay attention to it.

“You can paint a room pink, and after a month you don’t even notice the pink anymore. It’s about engaging people with the will and the belief. It’s the right thing to do to keep themselves and their loved ones safe,” he said.

Hydrate Early & Often Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially at the beach or on the water.

Seek Shade During Peak Heat The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Take breaks in the shade, under an umbrella, or indoors when temperatures climb. Schedule outdoor activities in the morning or evening when temperatures are lower and UV rays are less intense.

Dress for the Weather Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply every two hours.

Know the Warning Signs Dizziness, headaches, nausea, and excessive fatigue can signal heat exhaustion.

Move to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

By Laura Walter | Staff Reporter “Living in Delaware, I’m at the top of the food chain. Nothing wants to eat me,” said Bryan Ochs. “But there’s certainly annoyances, like ticks and mosquitos.”

At the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays (CIB), Ochs and his team spend a lot of time outdoors, so they’re seasoned in avoiding or deterring creatures that bite or sting.

The First State has elegant butterflies, dolphins and herons. But it also has insidious jellyfish, horseflies and mosquitoes that can get in the way of a perfect day.

Here are some tips for avoiding, deterring or treating common bites in Delaware. Consider going to a walk-in health center (urgent care) or calling 911 if someone is having an allergic reaction or suffering immensely.

Ticks Ticks are a public health concern in Delaware. People and animals should enjoy their time outdoors, but they should also check for parasitic insects that can carry disease.

“Ticks are active in Delaware year-round, not just in warmer months, and can be found in wooded, brushy and grassy areas,” according to Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC) officials.

Most human bites come from the blacklegged tick (deer tick), lone star tick and American dog tick.

You can avoid ticks, or slow them down before they bite. Minimize bare skin by wearing long pants, long sleeves and even tucking pant legs into socks. Walk in the center of trails, and

avoid walking in tall grass, leaf litter or brush.

Determine what kind of insect repellent you prefer, whether with the chemicals DEET or picaridin, or more natural options, such as oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow label instructions, and ensure the repellent is actually formulated to repel ticks. Pet owners should use prevention products year-round to protect animals that spend time outdoors.

After enjoying the outdoors, check yourself, kids and pets for ticks. Then immediately bathe or shower. Ticks like to hide in warm, hidden areas, so check the scalp, armpits, beltline, groin and behind the knees.

Remove any tick from your body as soon as you find it — ideally with fine-tipped tweezers, but with your fingers if need be. Grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible and pull it out gently. Do not twist or squeeze.

“Do not use petroleum jelly, heat, nail polish or other substances to try and make the tick detach from the skin. This may agitate the tick and force infected fluid from the tick into the skin,” according to the CDC. Dispose of the live tick by placing it in a sealed container; wrapping it tightly in tape; flushing it down the toilet; or putting it in alcohol.

Do not crush the tick with your fingers. Clean your hands and the bite area immediately, as best you can.

Besides being crawling, biting or partially embedding themselves in the skin, ticks are known to carry illness. If you were bitten, you could keep the tick in a plastic bag in the freezer or at least photograph it for identification, in case of future health problems.

care professional immediately if you experience a rash, fever, swelling, nerve pain, arthritis, flulike symptoms or other ailments within a month of the bite. The sooner a patient obtains antibiotics, the better, to help prevent a single flareup from becoming a chronic condition.

Alpha-gal syndrome can also be transmitted by ticks. It acts like a serious food allergy.

First there are symptoms that may include a rash, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, cough, shortness of breath, swelling in the face, faintness, difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis. But most distinctively, victims develop a new and ongoing allergy to meat. Their bodies react negatively to the alpha-gal sugar molecule, which is Continued on page 28

naturally found in beef, pork, lamb, venison, rabbit and goat meats, dairy foods, gelatin and some medicines.

Powassan virus is rarer, but Delaware had its first case in the spring of 2026. At this time, there are no medicines to treat, nor vaccines to prevent it. Initial symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting and weakness. If the full disease develops, it can include inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or the membranes around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), as well as confusion, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking and seizures.

Mosquitos and biting flies These insects are like papercuts: after two bites, you’re wondering where you went wrong in life. Mosquitos, horseflies and greenhead flies are known for irritating bites that cause itching and swelling.

Summertime activities are especially

fraught, because people usually have more bare skin for bugs to chomp on.

“If the wind is going the wrong way, the horseflies and mosquitoes are miserable,” said the CIB’s Ochs. “This is my observation on the beach. … If the wind is coming off the marsh behind us, the horseflies and mosquitos make it unbearable.” But breezes from the ocean tend to push insects back off the sand.

“Typically, for me, I would wear lighter pants and a long-sleeved shirt and something with a hood so they don’t buzz in my ears — and also for sun protection,” said the CIB’s Clare Magargal.

As with ticks, determine what kind of insect repellent you prefer, and always follow label instructions, and ensure the repellent is formulated to repel whichever insects you might encounter.

Daytrip: Berlin America’s Coolest Small Town

A vacation to the Delmarva coast isn’t just for the beachgoers, who feel most at peace bobbing in the cool ocean water or soaking up the sun’s rays; the foodies, savoring local delicacies from blue crab to boardwalk treats; or the recreational adventurers, who prefer to glide along with the Delaware Bay’s natural current in a kayak or sailboat.

It’s also for the cultural explorers, those who enjoy learning about local history, discovering one-of-a-kind small businesses in tucked-away side streets, and authentically being immersed in the local culture and charm of a small town.

Only a short drive from the Delaware beaches, one of those small towns is Berlin, Md., known for its charming main street and historic downtown area that’s accessible on foot.

“Berlin has a very busy Main Street and the side streets are where all the treasures are found. There really isn’t anywhere you can’t walk to if you’re downtown,” said Ivy Wells, economic and community development director of the Town of Berlin, who shared some of the town’s most notable attractions.

With a vibrant arts scene, educational explorations of folklore and world mysteries, and even a connection to Hollywood, Berlin, has something for everyone to explore on a daytrip away from the shore.

the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum, which doubles as a historical home and a museum of local history. While the home was built in 1832 for Isaac Covington and his family, it’s known as the residence of Calvin B. Taylor, founder of the Calvin B. Taylor Banking Company, and his wife, Mattie, in the 1890s.

The home’s remaining original features include a grand front doorway and fluted columns, while the rest of the museum is furnished with period-appropriate fixtures, recreating the Taylor family’s living quarters.

There are also exhibits sharing some of the town’s most noteworthy stories, including the life of former slave and Civil War soldier Isaiah Fassett and the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit’s surprising connections to Berlin.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States this summer, visitors to the museum during the 2026 season will have the chance to attend special events, including new exhibits, concerts, movie nights and a book festival occurring between April and October.

“Our goal is to showcase Berlin’s history as a microcosm of American history, focusing on both individual stories and collective community action — particularly the work done in the 1970s and 1980s to revitalize Berlin’s historic downtown,” said Executive Director Melissa Reid about the celebration, on the website at taylorhousemuseum.org.

Quirky hidden gems

Part of Berlin’s natural charm lies in the town’s connection to its roots, with echoes of its past persisting into modern day. Stephen Decatur Park — a community center featuring a playground, disc golf course and racquetball courts — commemorates a Berlin-area native and 19th-century naval hero. Amidst more modern structures, the architecture of the brick buildings on Main Street harken back to the Federal, Victorian and 19th-century eras, denoting the town’s rich history.

Given that Berlin offers so many unique, quirky experiences to its visitors, it’s easy to comprehend why it was named “America’s Coolest Small Town” back in 2014 by Budget Travel.

On a self-guided walking tour, movie buffs can see the real-life filming locations that served as Maggie’s house, located on Baker Street, as well as the Atlantic Hotel where Ike stayed and the Falcon Diner, better known to locals as Rayne’s Reef Soda Fountain.

Millennials will also recognize some of the landmarks on main street from another popu-

lar family film from 2002: “Tuck Everlasting,” starring Alexis Bledel.

One of the only museums of its kind located on the East Coast, the Mermaid Museum — opened in 2020 by local artist and photographer Alyssa Maloof — highlights the history, folklore and curiosities related to the mysterious sirens of the sea. Some of the hidden gems featured in the museum include “mermaid scales” from the Isle of Wight, mermaid

spirit charms used by Japanese fisherman as protective talismans at sea, and a model of a “Feejee mermaid” — a taxidermy half-monkey, half-fish that P.T. Barnum claimed as authentic.

Families with children can spend the afternoon exploring the exhibits, perusing the map of past reported mermaid sightings, take on a mermaid scavenger hunt or even “transform” into one of the creatures themselves by donning a costume mermaid tail. The exhibit is open every day in the summer, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the entry fee is $11 per person.

Continuing with the theme of exploring mysteries and challenging personal beliefs, another quirky attraction is the Ghost Museum, located on Pitts Street. The museum invites paranormal enthusiasts or curious non-believers to test their beliefs firsthand by exploring a collection of artifacts and stories related to ghost sightings and paranormal phenomena.

Sweetest place on the shore Just like the gooey center of a cinnamon bun, when they further explore the core of Berlin by strolling down its side streets, visitors will stumble upon a sweet surprise. According to Wells, Berlin has become known as one of the “sweetest places on the shore,” developing a reputation for its bakeries, cafés and ice cream shops. In between a visit to a museum or boutique, take a break from sightseeing and stop in at one of Berlin’s renowned dessert spots for a sweet treat.

One notable shop is the Baked Dessert Cafe & Gallery, located on Bay Street, also known as the home of the official dessert for the Town of Berlin: a peach dumpling. By Kerin Magill | Staff Reporter They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and in the world of seaglass, that’s literally true.

Seaglass is, after all, pieces of glass, tumbled by time and tide… the more tumbled, or “frosted,” the more valuable it is considered by seasoned seaglass “hunters.”

While shell-seeking is a common coastal pastime, focusing on the flotsam and former

homes of myriad marine animals, the allure of seaglass is more esoteric. There are categories and sub-categories of seaglass.

For example, in his book “Pure Sea Glass: Discovering Nature’s Vanishing Gems,” author Richard LaMotte devotes an entire chapter, and a two-page photo spread, to bottle lips.

In his book, LaMotte breaks down bottle lip styles into four time periods, ranging from pre-1850 to 1890-present. Similarly, he explains the vagaries of everything from snuff

jars to soda bottles.

That means seaglass hunters can find themselves delving into historic realms they didn’t even know existed, all because of a piece of frosted glass that washed up on a sandy shore.

So many distinguishing characteristics can help tell the story of a piece of glass — color, shape and thickness, to name a few. One of the most treasured types, called “pirate glass,” is so dark and thick that an untrained eye might even think it’s just a dark piece of stone.

Held up to light, however, pirate glass is revealed to be imbued with deep hues of olive green, amber and, occasionally, red or blue.

Motivations and interests vary for seaglass hunters, but it usually starts with a simple desire to get out on the beach, breathe the salt air and let the mind rest.

For Jenn Barrows of Rehoboth Beach, a yearslong habit of walking the beaches turned into a “pandemic silver lining” in the spring of 2020, when the world closed down during the early days of the COVID-19 crisis.

That was when, Barrows said, “My eyes started to finally see the seaglass. Barrows said it’s not just the seaglass that makes the hunts so meaningful. A year after her renewed seaglass mojo, Barrows’ mother passed away, and the day after that, Barrows again found herself walking the beach.

That day, she said, she found 60 pieces of seaglass, including one piece in a shade of blue — her mom’s favorite color.

Before her mom passed, Barrows said, the two had a discussion about with whom she had an “agreement” regarding life after death.

She said her mom “agreed” that her mom would send her a sign, and that it would be yellow.

“As I was leaving the beach,” Barrows recalled, “I saw this very large yellow crab come out of a hole in the sand. I’ve never seen another crab like it. It was yellow — like

really sunshine yellow. It was the craziest thing.”

While some seaglass hunters “get territorial” and don’t divulge their best hunting spots, she said, “I sort of feel like what you find is meant for you.”

Most Delaware seaglass hunters acknowledge that bay beaches — including Woodland Beach, Bowers Beach, Broadkill Beach and others on the Delaware Bay — might be more productive, but ocean beaches are easier to reach from coastal towns.

Bay beaches, Barrows said, “are very, very tidal” so it’s more challenging to time a visit. “But I know people that do really well,” on those beaches, she said.

“I don’t have time to go up there,” Barrows admitted. “I have gear in my car, and if I have 30 minutes, I’ll stop at the beach and take a quick walk. That’s my jam,” she said of her walks, which she often takes at sunrise.

Like many seaglass hunters, Barrows

said winter is her preferred time to walk the beach, particularly because sunrise at that time of year is later.

“Seaglassing-wise, winter into spring is probably the best” time, she said.

However, she said, seaglass shows up all year-round. She recalled one summer day when she met a couple with “a huge bag full of seaglass, and a lot of it was pirate glass.”

“I’ve only found maybe two pieces,” she said of pirate glass. “These people had like 30 pieces of pirate glass. Good-sized pieces. So, it’s out there.”

Pennsylvania native Patti Durachko found her love of seaglass after retiring to Millsboro.

“I had never heard of seaglass,” before moving to Sussex County, she said.

As her own love of seaglass developed, Durachko said, “I started collecting it, putting it in jars. And then one day I thought, ‘What am Continued on page 50

I going to do with this?’ so I decided to start making pictures.”

That’s when Durachko’s art-school training came to the fore.

“I started making pictures,” with the pieces she was finding, she said. In addition to seaglass, she uses stones and shells she finds on her beach walks.

While some “seaglass” art uses glass pieces that are not authentic seaglass — essentially just machine-tumbled glass — Durachko only uses pieces she finds on the beach.

“It takes a lot of time, but I like it, and I’ve met some really interesting people” through her art, which she sells online and at craft shows.

Durachko said she finds it “kind of amusing” that some seaglass collectors are so secretive about their favorite spots.

“It’s almost like people who won’t tell you

where they fish,” she said of the parallel.

Durachko often goes seaglass hunting at dawn — and often finds others like herself out there already.

“It’s astounding,” she said. “You go out there at the crack of dawn, and there are people out there with flashlights.”

She said that, when she goes to craft shows, she tries to educate customers about how to recognize real seaglass when it’s used in art.

“Tumbled glass is very pretty, but call it what it is,” Durachko said.

For those interested in learning more about authentic seaglass, Durachko recommended the annual Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival, held in Lewes each year in early June, and the Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass Festival held in April in St. Michaels, Md. In addition to seaglass art and collections, there are experts at those festivals

who can examine pieces and offer their thoughts on what they are. And, Durachko said, what’s there is authentic, not just tumbled glass.

Durachko said her beach-glass hunting and her art have “evolved” over the past five years, and she was honored to have been a featured artist at the Georgetown Public Library last February.

But she said her main motivation for beach-glass hunting remains just getting out on the beach and walking.

“It’s a very Zen thing to do. I’ll pack a lunch. I’ll just walk around and pick up seaglass, and pick up trash while I’m there. I’ll spend hours and hours, just walking and enjoying the day. It’s probably one of my favorite things to do.”

One of her favorite finds, she said, was a piece of red glass, which is quite rare.

“I happened to find it on our anniversary.

By Taryn King | Editor You step onto the worn wood boards of your favorite beach boardwalk. Summer heat ripples over your skin and flocks of seagulls chatter over crashing ocean waves. A scent hits you, and you find yourself standing in line for your first taste of summer. Maybe it’s a salty bucket of boardwalk fries, the sweet tang of ice-cold lemonade, or a sugar-dusted

plate of funnel cake. Maybe it’s something richer, and you’re already making dinner plans that include a local seafood boil, or an all-out Old Bay crab feast. While seasonal tourism has helped shape the nostalgia found in sweet and savory boardwalk flavors and the resounding crack of a crab mallet, Coastal Delaware’s food scene is deeply tied to the beach, the bays, summer tourism, and Mid-Atlantic comfort

food traditions.

Long before the beaches became major tourist destinations, Sussex County was heavily agricultural. Family farms produced corn, tomatoes, peaches, watermelon, beans, and poultry. Take a drive through inland Delaware, and you’ll see miles of these crops still growing today, alongside an abundance of chicken farms.

Regarding that last fact, our small, threecounty state currently ranks #10 in the country for chicken production, according to the World Population Review. The history behind Sussex County’s poultry industry begins with one Ocean View woman, Cecilia Steele, in 1923, who was erroneously sent 500 chickens instead of her original order of 50 from a Dagsboro hatchery. She decided to raise all 500 and sell their meat for a lucrative profit. A short 5 years later saw over 500 growers in the region, and processing plants began another 5 years after that. During the Second World War, red meat was heavily rationed for military use, and a national campaign promoted the consumption of fish, fruits, vegetables, and, that’s right, poultry.

Delawareans rose to the challenge and by the end of 1942 were producing 102 million chickens per year. Today, Delaware’s poultry industry is valued at around $1.60 billion.

As tourism grew after World War II, restaurants began combining local farm products with seafood traditions. That blend of agriculture and coastal cooking still defines the food culture of coastal Delaware today and has Continued on page 56

earned the regional moniker of the Culinary Coast™ (designated by Southern Delaware Tourism).

The First Fishermen Centuries before the boardwalks and beach umbrellas, Sussex County was defined by the water. The tidal creeks, inland bays, and broad expanse of Delaware Bay that carve through the county’s eastern edge have sustained human life for thousands of years. First for Indigenous peoples, then for European

colonists, and eventually for generations of commercial watermen whose identity and livelihood were inseparable from the rhythms of the sea.

The story of fishing in Sussex County begins with the Nanticoke people, who occupied the southern regions of Delaware, particularly along the Nanticoke River, and were skilled hunters, fishermen, and traders, relying heavily on the region’s waterways for transportation and sustenance. Far in advance of European contact, these communities had mastered the abundance of the midAtlantic coast. The area’s earliest Native Americans feasted on oysters and used their shells in everyday life, such as to make jewelry, spoons, bowls, and more, as evidenced by displays at the Nanticoke Indian Museum near Millsboro.

The bay and its tributaries were not merely a food source, but the organizing principle of life on the lower Delmarva Peninsula, and the fish-

ing knowledge the Nanticoke and Lenape cultivated would quietly shape the practices of every waterman who followed them.

European engagement with Sussex County’s waters began in earnest in 1631, when the Dutch West India Company established Delaware’s first European settlement near present-day Lewes—a settlement known as Zwaanendael, meaning “Swan Valley,” intended to promote whaling and trade. Though that first colony was short-lived, the town of Lewes eventually took root and grew into something remarkable. Over the centuries, the town became one of the largest fishing ports in the country, with a tradition of boat building and seafaring that stretches back over three centuries.

Fueling much of that early maritime economy was an unassuming, oily, inedible fish: the menhaden. The menhaden provided oil for colonial streetlamps and much of the colonial economy before the whale oil industry took off in

New Bedford, Massachusetts, keeping tiny Lewes well-employed and well-off. The shipbuilding industry took expanded in Lewes as early as the seventeenth century, providing small boats that launched many a fisherman’s career.

The Golden Age of Oysters and Blue Crabs Alongside the menhaden trade, shellfish

defined the Sussex County waterfront. The inland bays (Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay) were once extraordinarily rich with oysters, clams, and blue crabs.

Prior to 1930, Delaware watermen pulled out between one and two and a half million bushels of oysters per year from Delaware Bay alone, a harvest that made the shellfish industry a cornerstone of regional culture and commerce.

Blue crabs, too, became central to Sussex County’s identity. The waters of the Delaware Bay and the inland bays offered an ideal habitat, and commercial crabbing became a seasonal way of life for generations of families, both as a livelihood and a local food tradition. Crab feasts evolved into social gatherings where newspaper-covered tables and Old Bay seasoning became part of the experience.

The same bounty that defined Sussex County’s waterways eventually masked their fragility. The plentiful oysters in both the inland bays and Delaware Bay fell victim to overharvesting and parasitic disease, and by the late 1950s, their numbers had plummeted. Today’s harvest is only a fraction of what Delaware watermen once boasted.

lopen each spring to the aquaculture pioneers now growing oysters in the Broadkill River, to the charter captains running bluefish and flounder trips out of Lewes and Dewey Beach, the connection to the water remains visceral and defining. The growth of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and Roosevelt Inlet in 1935 helped make the area well-known as a fishing destination, one that continues to draw anglers from across the Mid-Atlantic.

Before refrigeration and highway tourism, many seafood dishes were hyperlocal because they depended on the daily catch.

DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum preserves maritime history

The wonder of the sea comes alive with each artifact on display.

Visitors to the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum at 708 Coastal Highway, on the second floor above Sea Shell City, in Fenwick Island can enjoy a journey into maritime history. The visit will include a glimpse into the

depths of various bodies of waterways and a collection of treasures from the sea.

The more than 10,000 artifacts in the 1,000-square-foot facility include coins, ship bells, weaponry and a myriad of other compelling items that have been recovered from shipwrecks. These artifacts provide a connection to centuries of maritime heroics, disasters and discoveries.

While a great deal of the items range from the 1400s to the 1700s, there are other artifacts that are more recent, including those from the Titanic and the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Most of the items on display have been obtained during dives by the museum’s maritime archaeologist, owner and director, Dale Clifton.

Recent visitors were impressed with the experience of holding real gold bars from the treasure ship, the Atocha.

The museum was opened by Clifton in July of 1995, with the goal of recovering and preserving maritime heritage.

Admission to individuals and small groups is free but donations are accepted.

Tour-bus patrons are charged $5 per person.

Visitors can choose to tour the facility on their own or purchase a specific type of lecture delivered by Clifton that will include perusing items from the museum’s vault.

More information about many artifacts is available by activating a QR code with a cell phone to provide brief verbal presentations.

An ever-changing exhibit The DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum is an ever-changing exhibit that expands and diversifies with the acquisitions of new artifacts as they are recovered. The collection of shipwreck and recovered artifacts is one of the largest in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Repeat visitors will find that the museum provides frequently changing exhibits from various regions and around the world that expand and diversify with the acquisition of new artifacts as they are recovered.

Approximately 80 percent of the artifacts are rotated throughout museum exhibits around the world. The long-range goal is to expand the facility to exhibit the entire collection at one location.

“This is only about 10 percent of my collection,” said Clifton. “We have things loaned to museums all over the world. But if I find something on one of my dives, it comes right here to the museum first.”

The Fenwick museum, which does not receive state or federal grants and is funded by owner contributions and public donations, is an essential visit for anyone fascinated by the ocean’s epic stories.

was the stuff dreams are made of, he recalled. He was holding a legendary coin, and he knew that the last person to have touched it had died more than 195 years before, around Sept. 1, 1785. It was truly a gift from the sea.

Clifton’s introduction to the unique and fascinating world of this maritime heritage occurred in 1979 and changed his life forever. He suddenly realized that he had shaken hands with history. He also was challenged with the task of preserving the artifact, as well as sharing its story with others.

“Over the past 40 years, I have had the unique thrill of researching and recovering artifacts from shipwrecks and colonial sites around the world,” he said. “Each of the thousands of artifacts that I have recovered has a story to tell. By studying these artifacts, we can get an overview of what life was like centuries ago. By studying the past,

we can better cope with the present. By teaching the past, we open doors to the future. Through these exhibits, I feel that the artifacts can finally tell their stories. I hope that everyone who leaves the DiscoverSea museum will leave with a better understanding of our great maritime heritage.”

Sharing knowledge gained from findings Dale Clifton said DiscoverSea’s first responsibility is to advance an understanding and appreciation of the natural and cultural commonwealth of its collections through education. One of the museum’s goals is to teach and share the knowledge that has been gained through its findings.

This includes the importance of proper archaeology and how it affects the knowledge of any sea.

Among the oldest items at the museum

to date is a gold chain that was on its way to the queen of Spain before it sank on a Spanish galleon off the Florida coast in a 1622 hurricane. That galleon was found in 1985, after a 16-year quest. It held an estimated $538 million in gold, silver and gems, much of which formed part of the museum’s initial collection.

Museum hours in May and June are Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours from July 3 through Aug. 11 are Thursday through Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. September hours are Thursday through Tuesday, 11 a.m. 3 p.m. October and November hours are Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Larvae like this only appear occasionally in Delaware, since they move with time and tide. (These pesky creatures are sometimes nicknamed “sea lice,” but that is actually a separate marine parasite species that attaches to fish.)

“When these larvae are trapped between the bathing suit and the skin, the friction causes the stinging structures, known as nematocysts, to inject a small amount of venom into the skin,” according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. “Swimmers can also encounter crab larvae that pinch the skin; however, crab larvae do not have nematocysts, and after removing the larvae, there is no lasting rash.”

The skin will develop itchy red spots or raised bumps, which last up to a week or two.

Flu-like symptoms arise in a small percentage of cases. The irritation becomes apparent after a swimmer leaves the ocean, with damp clothing rubbing against their skin.

Unfortunately, rinsing your body with fresh water while still wearing the bathing suit typically just irritates the trapped critters, which can release more venom, causing you more discomfort. The only relief is to change out of the swimsuit as soon as possible, shower with fresh water to remove the larvae, and wash bathing suits with detergent and use mild heat to dry them. (If you have a severe reaction, just throw out your swimsuit altogether.)

If you’ve had a history of a severe reaction and do hear about an ocean outbreak, stay out of the water. Symptoms may be treated at home with hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, antihistamines or anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen. Healthcare providers can prescribe cortisone or stronger anti-itch treatments if needed. Avoid scratching!

Stingrays and skates These flat fish are only a concern if you accidently step on them in the ocean or bay.

“Just shuffle your feet, and the movement will scare them away,” said Ochs at the CIB. Skates have a shorter tail, with some spikes or thorns, which merely smarts if you step on them. Stingrays have a jagged and venomous barb on their whiplike tail, which they can use in a stabbing attack if startled.

In the rare instance someone is injured, clean and disinfect the open wound immediately. Soaking the wound in hot water is said to reduce the venom’s toxicity and reduce the pain.

Seek professional treatment to prevent infection (especially if any barbs remain embedded) or if you experience additional symptoms, such as headache, nausea, fainting, abnormal heart rhythm or seizures.

Snakes Snakes give a lot of people the willies, but these reptiles are usually even more afraid of you. Delaware is home to 19 snake species, but among them, only the Eastern copperhead snake is venomous.

“In addition to their copper-colored head and cat-like vertical pupils, the copperhead is the only species of snake in Delaware that has dark hourglass-shaped crossbands that are narrowest at the center of the back and wider at the belly,” according to DNREC. The copperhead and other snakes may bite as a defensive move. But only the copperhead has an option of using venom in that bite (although it may also choose to save that resource for capturing prey).

Although bites are uncommon, the venom can cause severe tissue damage, so anyone bit by a copperhead should seek medical assistance immediately. (If possible, grab a photo of the snake to better ensure correct identification and treatment.)

and wildlife, and therefore, snakes). Keep wood and kindling stacked neatly and away from the house. If you encounter a snake, you can try spraying toward it with a garden hose to safely encourage it to move on.

Perhaps the National Park Service says it best: “If you encounter a snake, leave it alone. Do not attempt to harass or handle any snake, and keep a safe distance.”

Animals not to fear People fear the unknown. But most wildlife just wants to be left alone.

“The best thing to do is just leave them be, look at them from afar, glance at them, don’t interact with them or try to get them to come after you. Bring your binoculars,” said the CIB’s Magargal.

Copperhead snakes are the only venomous snakes in Delaware. they’re already dead and you cut your foot on a dried-out shell. Their pointed tail does not sting,

and their small claws do not pinch.

“They look prehistoric, so people would think they’d scurry after you or bite you quick … but they don’t. They’re very slow and docile,” said Magargal.

Foxes, deer and other mammals are generally not aggressive.

Seagulls are a nuisance because they’re used to scavenging food at the beach. Don’t be the vacationer who offers them food, causing a swarm on your family and the people around you. Keep your food closed, and yell at curious birds to scatter them.

Always keep your distance from ocean animals that wash up or haul out onto the shore (including seals, sea turtles, whales, dolphins or manatees), and report them to the Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute (MERR) stranding hotline at (302) 228-5029.

“Mostly I just like the aqua pieces, and the different shades of green. And pirate glass. I can pick it out, and I’ve found big chunks of it. You start thinking about how old it is,” she said.

“That’s part of the fun of walking the beach — you never know what’s going to wash up.”

Both Barrows and Durachko are members of a Facebook group called Seaglass Hunters of Delaware. Another member, Laura Schwartz of Ocean View, said her childhood summers spent at her grandparents’ home on Long Beach Island, N.J., were where her love of beachcombing blossomed.

“My grandmother is the one who started my love of seaglass and all things ocean,” Schwartz said. “It’s definitely her fault that I am a seaglass hunter.”

“If there is a body of water, I will be

looking for seaglass,” she said. “I just love the different shapes, the shades,” but as a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in history, “I love that aspect of it.”

Schwartz said one of her favorite recent finds was a clear piece with red wording on it.

“You could kind of make out some of the wording — ‘By the Sea,’” she said. She took a photograph of the piece and did a search online. “‘What is this?’ It spit back out that it was from the Rehoboth Bay Dairy By the Sea.” She then found a bottle from the dairy similar to her piece of seaglass and purchased it.

“It’s this cool piece of history that I wasn’t expecting to find,” she said.

As a mother of young children, Schwartz said her “hunts” are usually limited to quick beach trips while her children are in school.

She said she often walks the beach with a friend in the mornings.

“It’s something fun to do. You’re getting exercise. I’ve found that I don’t go in the summer when the tourists are all here. I love going in the winter. It’s this eerie, amazing feeling. It’s very calming and peaceful. Freezing cold, but it’s so much fun.”

In “Pure Sea Glass,” LaMotte writes that timing can be crucial to successful beach glass hunts. “A prime time to search for seaglass is during the first approaching low tide following a storm that had on-shore winds of at least 15 to 20 knots,” Schwartz said she has found, in walking the beaches in Delaware for the past five years, the unique rhythms of the sea are fascinating.

“You see how the coastline changes, how it fixes itself. You notice the currents and the winds… all these things.”

Seaglass, Schwartz said, as a product of all of those natural forces, “is just a gift that the ocean gives you.”
