Birds of a feather

By Kerin Magill Staff Reporter A Fenwick Island restaurant’s efforts to solve parking issues have led to a move that both the restaurant and the Fenwick Island Town Council hope will help to keep residents and visitors safe. A request from Surf Bagel to use a nearby vacant lot for overflow parking led to a review of the situation by Fenwick Island’s Charter & Ordinance Committee, which came up with a set of parameters for businesses to apply for temporary permits to use unimproved lots for parking. Surf Bagel President Matt Patton told the town council this week, during a public hearing on the proposed change to the Town’s parking ordinance, that he realized quickly after the start of the summer season last year that the existing 29-spot parking lot was not sufficient to meet the restaurant’s volume. Patton — as well as council members and residents who attended the Monday, March 23, meeting — spoke about cars of Surf ’s Up patrons spilling out onto Essex Street and Bunting Avenue and creating hazards for pedestrians and other vehicles in the area.
