South Coast meets Far East

By Paul Kandarian One of the greatest things about traveling is the sense you get about places you visit, usually the senses of sights, sounds, smells and tastes.

I was lucky enough to spend a week in Thailand recently where never have I been struck more by the sense of soul than I was in this most remarkable Far East country.

It’s probably not that surprising considering that 97 percent of the country is Buddhist, and as a result her people are the most gentle, peaceful and soulful I have ever had the pleasure to meet. It is the custom there not to shake hands when greeting people, but to bow, hands clasped before you, just under the nose and intoning “Sa wa dee,” the general greeting of hello. A more respectful, graceful encounter method I have never seen.

Everywhere, people did this, in the

airport, the shops, the hotels, the streets, and everywhere, accompanied by a smile. The tourism tagline here is that Thailand is “The Land of Smiles.”

I saw no reason to take exception with that.

Thailand overall is a place of sensory overload, the sights, sounds, smells, tastes all around you, all the time. At 5 in the morning one day, standing on the balcony of my suite on the 57th floor of the super-elegant Labua at State Tower hotel in downtown Bangkok, I sipped coffee and listened. In the distance was this great throaty growl that I at first thought was a plane taking off or landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport some 20 miles away.

But how could that be? It was too far away, for one thing, and for another, the sound was steady, unchanging, for

Continued from page 6 as long as I stood listening. Then it hit me: It was the city itself, its voice, its audible call, its signature sound. Bangkok is never quiet, it seems, this place of roughly 11 million souls, their collective reliance on all things mechanized, by land or water, converging to create a steady thrum, a constant din that never goes away, day or night.

Down below me snaked the Praya River, the main watery artery cutting through the city, alive with twinkling ferry boats and barges, pushing their way up and down river. The city’s main roadways, even early in the morning, were alive, a slowing clog of cars and trucks and motorbikes and pink taxis, a glowing red slither of taillights as far as the eye could see.

Delightful sights and smells Walking the streets here is to be delighted by the sense of sight and smell.

Street markets abound (no one actually cooks at home, I learned, there’s too much cheap, ready street food to be had, all of it good, most of it confusing to my Western eye), and here you will find heaps of chili peppers, fly-coated mounds of fresh or desiccated fish and meats, towers of vegetables and fruits, hanging flowers, entire roasted ducks, all of it amid the cackle and chatter of its people engaging each other in a language totally incomprehensible to me in its nasally whining cadence that is discordant yet undeniably beautiful.

I had come to Thailand on a culinary adventure, a trip to learn how to cook genuine Thai food, not the Americanized, glutinous, under-spiced goo served in Thai restaurants in the United States that passes for ethnic cuisine.

I was not disappointed. First up, we learned at the Amita Thai Cooking Class, lovingly run by Tam Piyawadi Jantrupon, using the home where she was born. We got there by boat, cutting up dirty canals, motoring by homes both dilapidated and charming. The school is tiny, but with a garden most remarkable, bountiful with herbs and spices used in the classes.

Tam is a delightful woman, a lawyer and fashion designer by trade who gave it all up three years ago to come back home, take care of her aged mother and offer her expertise in Thai cooking to

the mostly Westerners who take it.

Here we gathered to learn how to cook phad Thai, a signature Thai dish of stir-fried soft rice noodles with prawns and tamarind sauce; tom yum goong, clear hot-and-sour soup with fresh prawns; and tab tim krob, an outstanding and most colorful dish of water chestnuts in syrup with freshly made cold coconut milk.

Later we learned royal Thai cuisine at The Blue Elephant, a truly elegant restaurant in the heart of Bangkok run

by Khun Nooror Somany Steppe, a female chef, one of Thailand’s best, who opened it 30 years ago. Still later, while staying at the supremely high-end Four Seasons resort in Chiang Mai in the northern province of Thailand, we took part in the cooking school there, run by chef Pitak Srichai, a delightful man impassioned about his work and imparting what he knows to us, explaining where the food is from and what medicinal benefits it carries. Always, we learned about specific foods and specifically why they are good for us. In Thailand, more than any other place I have visited, you are what you eat.

The soul of Thailand was never more beautifully on display than at the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang, a place that takes in so-called “urban elephants;” when Thailand outlawed using elephants in logging years ago, their handlers were forced to take them into cities to perform for tourists, relegating them to horrible conditions.

Ride an elephant Here, for a scant $115, you can be a “mahout” for a day (elephant driver), learning to ride the beasts, the world’s largest land animal, climbing aboard their massive, bristly necks and lumbering through the jungle. Mine was Dor Ta Daeng (red eyes), a massive, 34-year-old male who, they told me, was the playful one. Indeed, stopping in a stream at one point, he filled his trunk with water and doused me completely. In the ever-present Thai sticky heat, it made me love him all the more.

Without a doubt, the truest sense of any place is its soul. And without a doubt, Thailand has the truest sense of soul I have ever been lucky enough to embrace. I’m not sure when I can go back, but it won’t be soon enough.

Along, alone, alas

I suppose, in some circles, I would be considered an “Old Fart,” but I’m willing to wear that title with pride.

The reason for being thus categorized probably would be that my cell phone is just that—a phone, a great means of voice communication, regardless of distance. I don’t “text,” and I have only used the camera feature three or four times. I do my writing on a computer, but it is shut off for hours at a time. I’m on Facebook, but it’s not exactly intellectually challenging, especially since comment space is limited and I’m not into “farming.” I don’t Twit, but I do use email and have to admit it’s a great advantage over U.S. Mail. I am app-less.

Some would say that I’m just not technically savvy, but that would not be true. I can use technology when it is appropriate. I just like to be in control of my time, in touch with my feelings, objective in relationships and free to leave technology behind to walk out into the sunshine of reality and smell the flowers.

I’ve found an ally in Dr. Sherry Turkle, the author of a new and thoughtprovoking book: Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology And Less From Each Other. One of the points that she makes is in the form of a question: “Technology reshapes the landscape of our emotional lives, but is it offering us the lives we want to lead?”

I guess my point about the phone is that it’s an instrument of direct, realtime communication. In addition to the words spoken, one can catch the tone of the voice and the emotion it reveals or the hesitations that may “say” a great deal. Emotion is part of communication.

Texting is flat and emotionless. Dr. Turkle suggests that many within our modern society are both lonely and fearful of real intimacy, the sharing of 10

fears, hopes and insecurities.

“Our networked life allows us to hide from each other, even as we are tethered to each other. We’d rather text than talk,” she says.

Not only do we have to dodge people on the sidewalk, totally absorbed in their texting or “appting,” but everywhere we go, people have set up their laptops and are off in their own “world.”

There are times when I find the practice just plain rude and obnoxious. Recently I was in a local coffee shop and found all tables occupied…by laptops with their owners sitting there, hooked up to WiFi and oblivious to real time concerns like courtesy and respect for others.

Dr. Turkle describes attending a conference in which, while the speaker was making his presentation, most of the attendees were “lost” in their personal laptop networks. So much for courtesy or respect!

On her way to the conference she also became aware of what many others have begun to notice: not too long ago, people in transit to a confer-

ence or meeting would fill the travel time with meaningful and informative conversations, story-telling, jokes, etc. Now, each one is focused on their laptop or Blackberry. The personal, nurturing and enlightening relationships are passé. Is that good or bad? I lean toward the latter.

Technology is not bad in and of itself. In many ways it’s a lifesaver and certainly a time saver.

When I started out in marketing, I pounded a typewriter. Everything I wrote had to be rekeyed by the typesetter, developed, dried, cut and pasted on boards. Then it went off to a printing company. Now everything is done on the computer and sent directly to the full color, in-house printer. Instead of creating direct mail pieces, everything is done online and results are instantaneous. Of course, this progress has eliminated more than a few jobs along the way.

The problem with much of current technology is that we have become tethered to it, controlled and shaped by it, losing some of our personal

independence, our ability to dream, imagine, create…and be real!

There’s nothing more real—and life-enhancing—than a relationship between two people…right?

Well, according to David Levy, technology can bring improvements even into that area of our lives. Levy is the author of Love and Sex with Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships. Levy claims that we will become better lovers and friends because of the ability to practice on robots.

They will teach more than is available in all of the world’s sex manuals. They will be there when real people fail.

There will be no cheating, and therefore no heartbreak. Fantastic! If you’re impressed by this prospect, you might want to put in your order now and get ahead of the crowds.

Beyond Levy’s vision of robotic lovers there is the prospect that robots could prove invaluable as child-care specialists. For the aging and infirm, they could become companions and caregivers, programmed to make a perfect cup of tea or tuck in the covers.

I’m not sure how good they would be at changing bed pans or wiping the tears from one’s eyes.

Ahh…I bet you think I’m kidding about all of this, but I’ not. Dr. Turkle raises the question: Technology reshapes the landscape of our emotional lives, but is it offering us the lives we want to lead?

Membership is free. All it takes is the willingness to step back, unplug, disconnect and objectively look at where we are today and boldly ask some serious questions.

For those questions, I’ll yield once again to Dr. Turkle. Are we comfortable with virtual environments that propose themselves not as places for recreation but as new worlds to live in? What do we have, now that we have what we say we want—now that we have what technology makes easy? This is the time to begin these conversations together. It is too late to leave the future to the futurists.

Invasion of food allergies and intolerances

Have you ever seen the words “gluten free” written on a restaurant menu and wondered what that meant? You may recall that boy or girl back in grade school who had a severe peanut allergy and could not come within five feet of those tiny legumes. Well, the incidence of such conditions has increased greatly in recent years.

“Gluten free” is a notice that the menu items are safe for those who have a specific food intolerance and cannot process gluten, the protein of wheat and other grains that gives dough its flexible character.

Food intolerances vs. food allergies According to health specialists Robert H. Herman and Louis Hagler, a food intolerance is “any illness or biochemical or metabolic abnormality that is casually connected to the ingestion of any food or dietary component.”

A food allergy, on the other hand, is an abnormal response to a food triggered by your body’s immune system. Allergic reactions to food can sometimes cause serious illness and death. They are fast acting as opposed to food intolerances, which occur over time.

Take someone who is allergic to peanuts as an example. Just by smelling the peanuts, the person may develop onset of hives, closing of the throat, and other symptoms. He may even 16

go into anaphylactic shock, which requires emergency intervention.

But with food intolerances, it may take hours, days, or even weeks for people to observe the effects of the food. When someone has a food intolerance, his gastro-intestinal tract is unable to produce digestive enzymes

to break down the food products normally. As a result, the foods travel through the body unprocessed or are left in the gut to linger.

Human diet The human diet can be broken down into four stages: the Miocene to Pleistocene era, Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Industrial Revolution. During the Miocene to the early Pleistocene period, humans ate mainly foliage, vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts. This diet was rich in fiber, plant sterols, and vegetable protein.

The Paleolithic era, which ended approximately 10,000 years ago, was similar to the previous one, but also incorporated lean meats and seafood,

The Neolithic era began with the emergence of agriculture. During this time, grains and legumes or tree nuts were introduced as dietary supplements. Various oils, such as vegetable and olive oil, were also introduced.

The human diet saw the most profound changes during the Industrial Revolution, with the introduction of prepackaged foods, including canned meats, condensed canned soups, hydrogenated vegetable oils, refined grains, and white breads, which are high in sugar content.

With the introduction of these foods, the human diet became enriched in carbohydrate sources, animal products, saturated fat, and dietary cholesterol. On the flip side, our diets became deficient in legumes, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

As a result of these changes in diets, our bodies have developed food allergies. Nowadays, 65% of the average American diet is composed of grains, fats and oils, sugar, and sweeteners.

Food industries Food industries and farms use growth hormones on many of their animals. They spray pesticides onto the produce in order to keep bugs and other pests away. Industries also use preservatives to prolong the life and value of various food products.

Some preservatives are natural, as they are made from foods such as corn and soybean, while others are manmade. Although they are essential for keeping food from spoiling, they can be hazardous to people’s health.

But, why do companies use preservatives if they can be poisonous to humans? They do it to make money.

Purchasing whole foods that are healthy and free of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals is expensive.

Many Americans cannot afford to shell out the money in order to purchase these foods, and so they are stuck in a cycle where cheap processed foods are more inexpensively available.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, usually referred to as “wear and tear� arthritis; it is caused by injury, overuse and it is also largely genetically determined. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

If osteoarthritis of the knee fails to respond to non-operative treatment (medications, injections and physical therapy), knee replacement may be an option for many patients seeking to eliminate pain, deformity and diminished motion.

While total knee replacement is effective in treating end stage osteoarthritis in most patients, it is a significant operation with a prolonged recovery period. Partial knee replacement, resurfacing only the portion of the knee which is diseased, is another

surgical option for treating advanced osteoarthritis. Partial knee replacement generally has a much shorter hospitalization and recovery period.

The success of partial knee replacement is highly dependent on the accuracy of the surgery, which until now has been difficult to achieve.

Advantages MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing is an innovative treatment option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis in either the medial (inside) compartment (as in the x-ray on the right), patellofemoral (top) compartment, or the lateral (outside) portion of the knee. If you were a seagull flying low over the South Coast, from Buzzard’s Bay to Seekonk, you could look down on a patchwork landscape of cities and towns, each one unique but part of the greater South Coast community. The combined population might number approximately 400,000.

Those cells grow, divide and die in an orderly fashion, creating a healthy, functioning You. Cancer cells grow and form new, abnormal cells that obviously the body does not need.

Individuals’ goals “We meet these people in a tremendous crisis, and they bring to the table a lifetime of experience, beliefs, and a culture that are all part of the relationship,” Dr. Mulvey said. In the first meeting with the patient there are several issues: “Patients have a knowledge gap regarding the natural history of the disease…they have an enormous amount of psycho-social distress over a life-threatening illness,” stress which has to be dealt with in order to aid the patient in going from “newly diagnosed” to “cancer survivor.”

In reflecting upon the concept of patient autonomy, Dr. Mulvey explained: “I ask patients this all the time: what are your goals, and what is important to you in the context of your life?” The answers can be quite varied: “Patients say to me, ‘My daughter is getting married, will I feel well enough for the wedding?’ So then we say— how do we take what you need to do in a way that you will have your hair for the wedding—we will manipulate the treatment schedule so that you will feel as good as you can.”

In my interview with Dr. Mulvey I asked if psychological counseling is part of the treatment program. She explained, “A lot of what oncologists do, we call ‘psycho-oncology.’ All

groups serve that need. Some feel they need individual counseling or to learn coping skills. We have social workers to meet individually with them. If necessary, we refer people to mental health providers. It really is a team effort.”

Respect for the feelings and needs of the individual are visible both in the staff of the Centers for Cancer Care and in the design and layout of the building. Men and women have their own changing areas, eliminating those embarrassing moments when ties loosen or flaps come undone. In the chemotherapy area the treatment bays are designed for maximum comfort and privacy. Patients even have

ates are at all time lows, which means a lot of consumers are looking into refinancing their mortgage. But how do you know if it’s the right time for you? Eat Vegetarian at least one day a week

by Melissa Tavares Three years ago I decided to make a deliberate effort to be more conscious about what foods I put on my plate, which among other things meant eating less meat. I’m certainly not a vegetarian, but I do try to avoid meat a few days a week and hardly make it the main ingredient of a meal. I challenge you and your family to join the millions of Americans already adhering to a Meatless Monday, and try to go vegetarian a least one day a week. Here are my top 5 reasons for going “part-time” vegetarian: Better for your Health. Study after study has proved that a diet lower in animal fats and higher in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps contribute to good health. In fact, people who eat less meat are less susceptible to disease and consequently live longer. Most people that decide to become part-time vegetarians—myself included—even find that they lose weight.

Better for your Wallet. Thirty dollars can buy a whole lot of beans and grains, but won’t go nearly as far on meats or fish. You’d be surprised to see the positive effect on your bottom line if you were 24

to eliminate and replace just half of the meat in your shopping cart with these common vegetarian staples.

Better for the Planet. The United Nations stirred up considerable debate a few years ago when it claimed that livestock was responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, a higher percentage than that of transportation! Regardless of your position on this issue, it’s scientifically accepted that it takes roughly ten times more energy to produce a pound of meat than a pound of grains, beans, or vegetables.

Better for the Animals. Over time, the industrialization of the meat industry has led to the poorer treatment of farm animals as factory farms have by and large replaced smaller family farms. By spending the same amount of money on less meat sourced from local farms, you can help ensure animal welfare while still keeping your budget in check.

Better for your Taste Buds. Vegetables are delicious, and there’s no better way to appreciate the season’s best vegetables than to make them the centerpiece of your menu. With the right arsenal of meat-free recipes, vegetarian meals can open a whole new window of culinary adventures.

Orzo Salad with Spinach and Goat Cheese makes 6 servings 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt 8 ounces orzo pasta 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil freshly ground black pepper 8 oz fresh spinach, stems

removed, finely chopped 1 bunch fresh basil, finely chopped 6 oz crumbled goat cheese In a large bowl combine the red onion, balsamic vinegar, honey, and salt. Mix well and allow to sit at room temperature for 1/2 hour.

Cook and drain the orzo, and then rinse it with cold water. Set aside.

Once the onions have marinated in the vinegar mixture, whisk in the olive oil and black pepper.

Stir in the spinach, basil, and goat cheese. Add additional salt if needed. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to blend together.

Spinach Pie Quesadillas serves 4 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped pinch red pepper flakes (optional) 1/2 teaspoon coarse kosher salt 1 lb fresh spinach, stems removed juice of 1/2 a lemon 8 burrito size flour tortillas 8 oz fresh ricotta cheese 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese marinara sauce for serving In a large pot heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and sauté the garlic and red pepper flakes over medium heat for about 1 minute; do not let the garlic brown.

Add all of the spinach and salt, toss it with the oil, cover the pot, and cook it for 2 minutes. Uncover the pot and cook the spinach for an additional minute until all the spinach is wilted. Stir in the lemon juice. Using a slotted spoon, remove the spinach from the pot, leaving any excess liquid behind.

Spread the flour tortillas out on a work surface and spread a layer of ricotta cheese on each of them. Scatter the spinach over the ricotta and then sprinkle with the shredded mozzarella.

Fold each tortilla in half to form 8 half round quesadillas.

Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat. Coat the pan with a bit of olive oil and add 2 quesadillas. When the bottoms have turned golden brown, carefully turn each quesadilla over and then brown on the second side. Remove the quesadillas from the pan, and put them in a 200 degree oven to keep warm.

Add a bit more oil to the pan and then repeat with the remaining quesadillas.

Cut each quesadilla in half and serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

isn’t just for other countries any more

by Jay Pateakos The majority of citizens in the South Coast believe that manufacturing and textile industries, companies that were once the backbone of the region, employing tens of thousands of people over the centuries, have closed its doors and moved overseas. Stories like Fall River Quaker Fabric’s demise in 2007 and other companies that closed its doors under very little fanfare, have contributed to the idea that companies like these no longer exist. But for many areas in southeastern Massachusetts, manufacturing and textile production are still very much alive and prospering.

While recent state unemployment statistics show that Massachusetts manufacturing jobs were down about 1,100 over the month of February and down 200 over last years numbers, many local companies continue to trudge through the difficult economy, reinventing themselves while continuing to manufacture products in our backyard including bed linens and towels, curtains, nuts and bolts and much more.

Taunton success stories Richard L. Shafer, the Economic Development Director of the Office of Economic and Community Development for the City of Taunton, said manufacturing in his city is thriving, with many success stories continuing to come out including nanotechnology company Kopin Corporation and precision manufacturer CBM, set to double its size, both located in the Myles Standish Industrial Park. In just that park alone, Shafer said manufacturing jobs make up 27 of the 104 total companies in the park, good for 2,215 jobs.

“Manufacturing remains a major industry in Taunton both in property taxes and employment and the City continues to have a higher percentage of manufacturing jobs than the state as a whole,” said Shafer.

Much of the reason for that high percentage, Shafer noted, 26

was primarily because that region is recognized as having a highly productive workforce and lower costs of operation than the metropolitan areas of Boston and Providence. The same can be said about New Bedford as well as Fall River, both continue to have success as manufacturing destinations.

“In addition to our traditional printing, metal fabrication, medical device, plastics, and precision machining operations, we have emerging biotech and life sciences companies in Greater Taunton as well,” Shafer added. “Kopin Corporation, our local nanotechnology company, celebrated their 25th anniversary in Taunton last year. As we work to expand the Myles Standish Industrial Park into the adjacent 200 acres of the former Dever Development Center, manufacturers will continue to be our main focus.”

Fall River too Manufacturing upscale bed linens since 1929, Fall River Industrial Park’s John Matouk & Co., with a client list of such names as Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks, continues producing high-quality linens right here in the South Coast.

Matouk linens and towels are sold in 33 states including California, Texas, and New York as well as overseas in Australia, Bermuda and the United Kingdom and other locations. In early April, Matouk, which employs 75 full-time employees, was nominated for a Small Business Association of New England Innovation Award. They were one of 20 finalists for the award, selected from over 185 nominees.

When asked about local companies such as his competing with similar companies overseas, Matouk President and third generation owner George Matouk, Jr. said it wasn’t about competing or keeping pace with these companies at all.

“We create products to make in Fall River that give us a

competitive advantage in flexibility or profit over overseas manufacturers. When the customer wants us to make something that we can produce more profitably overseas, we make it overseas,” said Matouk. “We believe that a rising tide will lift all boats at Matouk and that gives us the flexibility to make smart business decisions in a global environment.”

Secret to success If there was a secret to Matouk’s success, George said it comes from the understanding that his company is driven, not by manufacturing, but by marketing, something many companies like him failed to notice until it was too late.

“We know our markets and we listen to our customers. Then we give them solutions in a way that gives Matouk a sustainable competitive advantage,” Matouk said. “Our Fall River factory is not now, nor will it ever be, the most efficient producer of fine linens in the world. But it can be a critical component of the smartest global supply system of fine linens in the world.”

Matouk added that in order for his company to continue to grow and meet its aspirations for revenue and profit growth, the company needs to change its orientation from being wholesale-facing to consumer-facing.

“We need to build deep and interactive relationships with the people who sleep on our sheets and dry off with our towels,” Matouk said. “Success in manufacturing in Fall River will depend on our success in marketing and sales.”

Textile company Swan Dyeing and Finishing President Michael Rodrigues brought Swan back from the brink years ago, making the company more lean and focused on short turn around times for its customers instead of trying to compete in price alone. Whatever he’s doing is working, because the Fall River-based company currently employs 120 people full-time, 30 more than they did just a few short years ago.

“We have been able to grow in this difficult economic environment by locating areas in the market that have special needs such as smaller runs and custom processes at a great price in a quick time frame. Our only global advantage is our proximity to market, service and innovation,” said Rodrigues.

“We can not afford anything that does not add value. Our management team and union workforce are fantastic and work well together realizing that we must wear many hats and keep our costs down to a bear minimum to be in today’s marketplace.”

Rodrigues practices what he preaches, answering every sales-related email or call personally. You won’t find any fancy offices or figure heads here, he notes. Rodrigues plans to have his company continue to grow by its lean corporate structure, technical expertise, hard work and capital investment in productivity and energy efficiency that has provided the success it enjoys to this day.

“I am extremely proud of Swan’s accomplishments and also proud to still be a part of our countries first industry, textiles” said Rodrigues.

Claudette Correiro has been dedicating herself to others for a long time. She has been a loyal volunteer at Saint Anne’s Hospital, in Fall River, since 2007.

Q. Why did you decide to volunteer?

A. I have made some major life changes. My husband passed away in 2004‌I just decided it was time to do something. Even though I found things to do, you always have time. I have volunteered at Charlton Memorial, but since Saint Anne’s is closer, I looked into that. I first started in the oncology unit. My husband had been

a patient there, I was familiar with that, and knew how uncomfortable that can be for people, so I thought I’d help out there. I did that for a while, but then I needed a change of environment.

Now I’m at the patient information desk, which is nice. I get to see a lot of different people.

Q. What is the most rewarding aspect of volunteering?

A. Well, probably the fact that you’re

Prior to volunteering, Claudette Correiro was a stay-at-home mom. She also worked part-time at an arts and crafts program. After her youngest son started school, Correiro decided to open a clothing store with a friend. But four years later, her life became pretty chaotic, so she ended up leaving the business. She also worked as a realtor and a bank teller. Several years later, she decided it was time to open a new business, this time a pottery store with her daughter. She worked at the business for seven years, leaving it when her husband was diagnosed with cancer.

Correiro has also volunteered at Charlton Memorial Hospital, in Fall River, and at a hospice. She believes working at the hospice was a wonderful, intense experience, where she had the chance to meet patients as well as their families.

doing something for someone else and it ends up being more beneficial to you. I look forward to going there …

I have met other people; people I am still in touch with today.

Q. If you had to describe volunteering with one word, what would it be and why?

A. Rewarding. I have children and grandchildren who I help out, but it’s always nice to have something of your own. You always find time to do the things you have to do.

Q. Do you have any stories that were particularly touching or that affected you?

A. There was a girl that came in one evening when I was working last winter. She was a medical resident from Boston and she was going to be starting doing rotation at St. Anne’s.

She stopped at the desk; she was wondering if we knew of anyone she could speak with because she needed temporary housing. She was going to be here for three weeks. We were trying to bounce ideas of whom she could speak with.

I was actually surprised that they didn’t make those arrangements for her, but she said that most people just drive back and forth to Boston. She didn’t feel that comfortable driving; she didn’t consider that an option.

She wanted to be down here. So, I said ‘well, after you contact these people, if you are still having problems, I live down the road from here and have a guest room and I will be more than willing to let you stay there with me.’

The woman that was working with me said, ‘I just want to tell you that if I had a daughter I would be so happy if she would stay with her.’

So, the girl left and she was gone about five minutes. She came back in and said, ‘Do you think you can tell me where you live just so I can take a drive to see it…?’ She ended up staying with me. It turned out to be a very good experience for the both of us, and her mother called me from Canada thanking me.

AFC is a MassHealth funded program that provides 24-hour home care services for people with chronic health care needs. Pamper your skin—safely!

Want to improve skin tone and appearance?

Here are some tips to safely nourish and protect your skin.

There’s an adage not to put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t also put in your mouth to eat! Sounds a bit extreme, but there is some wisdom to this.

Why? Because the skin, our body’s largest organ, easily absorbs many substances placed on it. If molecules in these substances are small enough or are fat soluble then they can get directly into the bloodstream and travel to body organs and tissues. Drug companies use this principle for actual drug delivery of nicotine, nitroglycine and insulin with skin patches.

Likewise, chemicals on that long list of ingredients in your skin care products have the potential to act like drugs if they permeate the skin.

So what’s the harm There’s simply no way to know for sure. We do know that the US bans only 11 ingredients, whereas the European Union bans over a thousand ingredients widely used in our personal care products. That’s a shocking disparity and should get any thinking person wondering “what’s up” with the stuff in my face and body cream!

There are helpful resources. An example is cosmeticdatabase.com where you can readily access product safety.

Simply type the brand or specific ingredient in their database of thousands of ingredients and you will get a rating of potential toxicity based on available research.

Other substances and environmental conditions to avoid are harsh detergents, artificially perfumed soaps,

strong household chemicals, dry heat, extreme cold/wind, and overexposure to sun. All of these can dry out and/or damage skin’s epidermal and dermal layers, as well as hamper the skin’s ability to hold moisture.

To protect from too much sun there’s the obvious: cover up, reduce exposure during peak hours and use skin care protection such as sunscreens and/or sunblock tailored to your skin type and sensitivity.

Safer brands are Soleo Organics Sunscreen, Natural Sunscreen (Mercola), Aubrey Organics and Badger. These all use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as sunblocks and contain other natural ingredients to moisturize. Naturalists suggest using shea butter and green tea extract to provide mild sunscreen protection and other benefits to the skin.

Recent findings reveal that Vitamin D regulates a whopping 10% or 3,000 of all of our body’s genes! Rail project moves forward

Is it déjà vu all over again?

In February, the United States Army Corps of Engineers made a big splash with the release of their 2500 page Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) on the South Coast Rail Project.

The report evaluates alternate routes for commuter rail between Boston and Fall River/New Bedford. The report’s findings sound very familiar.

While not exactly naming a preferred route, the DEIS left no doubt that there was only one valid option. From a transportation perspective, the report concludes that best route to Boston from Fall River and New Bedford is the Stoughton route. From an environmental perspective, the report reaches the same conclusion.

The Attleboro alternative was all but disqualified for having “the greatest environmental impact” and “fail(ing) to meet the basic service delivery requirements.” It was further described as “operationally infeasible.” This conclusion will come as a great relief to the residents of Taunton, Norton and Attleboro.

Other alternatives were shown even less love from the Corps. The enhanced bus option running up Route 24 earned the second highest environmental impact and failed to meet two of four project purpose measures. The once highly touted Middleborough option failed to even make the Corps’ cut and was eliminated earlier because it would necessitate a tunnel under Quincy.

We’ve seen it before For those who have been following this project for a long time, these conclusions sound very familiar. In 1997, the state released an “expanded alternatives analysis” and in 1999 a Draft Environmental Impact Report. Both 36

concluded that Stoughton was the best route. So, have we wasted a dozen years and lots of scarce funds to reach the same conclusion in 2011? The answer is an emphatic NO. The big difference this time is who reached these conclusions.

A decade ago we all knew intuitively that the Stoughton route was the best, but Army Corps of Engineers remained the 800 pound gorilla in the room that we were going to have to go through eventually, even though we were led to believe otherwise.

Upon assuming office in 2007, Governor Patrick leveled with us and restarted the process. He honestly acknowledged the Corps’ role this time around and added the possibility of federal funding to the equation.

There may have been grumbling at the time, but this strategy paid off when the Corps released their report. While the final preferred route will not be named by the Corps for another year, their detailed analysis emboldened the state to announce their preference for Stoughton and will enable accelerated planning for that option.

Big deal indeed The significance of all this apparent bureaucratic intrigue and maneuvering is a very big deal indeed.

The Stoughton route traverses the Hockomock Swamp in Raynham and Easton. This large and important resource has been the focal point for environmental resistance to the plan to bring commuter rail to Fall River and New Bedford. Lawsuits have been threatened and may still be anticipated.

The DEIR puts these objections in their proper perspective.

The report states that “although the… alternatives both cross the Hockomock

Swamp ACEC, direct wetlands impacts of these alternatives within this ACEC are actually quite limited…In fact, of the 1.8 acres of impacts to the ACEC, only approximately 0.5 acre would affect actual wetland…” The significance of this statement and the supporting data is huge.

In the debate over the Hockomock impacts, we have lost track of many of the wonderful environmental benefits of this project. The Stoughton option will reduce vehicle miles traveled (an enormous contributor of greenhouse gas emissions) by between 228,700 and 295,900 each day. For the daily commuter, this means less congestion on routes 140 and 24.

Up to 9,580 riders will make the round trip each day from eight stations in Fall

River, New Bedford, Freetown, Taunton, Raynham and Easton. Transit oriented development around these stations and other economic development will provide much needed urban revitalization opportunities in each community and produce almost half a billion dollars in new activity each year.

The region’s dream still has significant hurdles remaining—most notably the financial plan for how we will pay for it. But for a project that has had many false milestones and premature celebrations, this progress point is real.

Let us applaud the Corps of Engineers for providing us with the supporting evidence we need to move forward— even if the train arrived at the station behind schedule.

In fact, Burgundy is the common name used for the red wines made from this grape, even when it was made in other regions. Similarly, white Burgundy is made from Chardonnay that is also grown in this area, the region that produces classic French Champagne and grapes used in the blend, or in some cases as 100 percent, of the Pinot Noir called Blanc de Noir Champagne, or 100 percent Chardonnay called blanc de blanc.

But fortunately both Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay grow well in many places around the world.

For decades, the great Burgundies of France were considered among the greatest wines in the world. In some of the best vineyards, the prices were, and still are, almost astronomical. It is no wonder that the wine makers in the U.S. want to compete in this very special market In the early days of U.S. wine making, “Burgundy” was used as the name for most any red wine regardless of the grapes used. Today, most wineries prefer to use the name of the grape such as Pinot Noir on any bottle that actually contains 80 percent or more of the grape. Wineries are proud to use that name because it is such a distinguished grape.

Early efforts However, early productions of Pinot Noir wines in California were pretty pathetic. Even in the late 1960s one wine writer called them “clown wines.”

When asked his reason he replied “They have a big rubber nose!” Indeed

the initial offerings were far from the exquisite Red Burgundies of France.

No wonder the French were not worried about U.S. wines.

But the U.S. vineyards and wine makers were persistent. During the 1970s and 80s incredible progress was made, and while the Pinot Noir wines were not exactly like the French, they were pleasant and delicious.

Eventually, Pinot Noirs from the great U.S. region on the west coast have become premium wines.

The grape growers learned that Pinot Noir did not do well in just any vineyard. In Napa Valley’s cooler parts, such as the hillsides and the southern Napa region of Corners, they were able to produce grapes that made the better Pinot Noir wines.

Today, good Pinot Noir can be found in a number of areas along the west coastal areas from Oregon to Santa Barbara, California. One of the best regions in Oregon is the Willamette Valley. There are dozens of producers of exceptional Pinot Noir. Further south, in California, the Russian River Valley and the Corners regions

(divided between both Napa and Sonoma Valleys) are doing very well producing great Pinot Noir.

Wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains are offering what many critics claim are very competitive Pinot Noir wines. There are also several great producers in Pinnacles and Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County. And finally, there are the almost legendary Pinot Noir wines of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria Valleys, regions that were heralded in the 2004 movie “Sideways.”

Good pricing There are many wineries producing this fabulous wine, and it come in a variety of styles. One producer of Pinot Noir wines from Willamette Valley is Domaine Drohin, a French family who want to get in the exciting U.S. Pinot Noir trend. They offer their basic wine at $39 a bottle.

For a lower budget priced Pinot, there is Erath at $14 and Kusos at $15.

Another Willamette Valley great is Adelsheim Pinot Noir 2008, priced at about $30 and well worth it. It was on special last year for $24! So watch for specials on all Pinot Noirs because the increased competition is creating a mild price war!

Heading south to the Russian River Valley you can find one of their top Pinots made by and named Gary Farrell as low as $38, but some go for several times that price. On the budget end the Russian River regions offers Bogle for $12 and Rodney Strong and Kenwood both for around $16.

In the Carneros region there are many producers including Mondavi at $22, and Saintsbury at $24. Schug produces a number of delicious Pinots at around $27, and one of their best is called Schug Heritage Pinot Noir, priced at $39.

Cambria is available at $19 in some local shops, Fess Parker at $22. There are others at more premium prices like Foley Santa Rita at $33. There are many more neat Santa Barbara Pinot Noirs.

(But watch out for newcomers riding on “Sideways” coat tails.)

Remember the French Good Burgundy wines from the classic French region tend to be more expensive. One classic, normally at $50 to $60 a bottle, is Charles Ballot Volnay Santenot Premier Cru 2006, priced at $55 “on special.” Another classic Burgundy, Domaine Pierre Amiot et Fils Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2006, is priced at around $100 and can frequently be found on special at $77.

There are some Burgundies blended from the harvests of a number of small vineyards. These are labeled generically with the Burgundy appellation.

One good example is Louis Latour Pinot Noir, appellation Burgundy at $12. It’s a good wine to see how the French do Pinot Noir.

You need to be aware that all true French Burgundies must have the phrase appellation Bourgogne controllée on the label. Unfortunately, wine made in the Beaujolais and the Chablis regions (legally subdivisions of Burgundy) and made from the Gamay grape (in Beaujolais) and the Chardonnay grape (in Chablis) but they use the same appellation phrase.

Lest we forget, there are some very interesting Pinot Noirs to be had elsewhere. One of the most interesting Pinot Noir producing countries is New Zealand. Another good region is British Columbia in Canada. While it is doubtful you will find any Pinot Noir wines from Canada, the New Zealand Pinot Noirs are readily available in the bigger and finer shops. One favorite is Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir, Marlborough, one of New Zealand’s best Pinot Noir regions) priced at about $30 to $35.

While no wine lover needs an excuse to drink good wines, there is one quality in which Pinot Noir excels.

When it is grown in cooler and more humid regions it seems to have three to four times higher concentration of resversatrol, a wine component said to actually reduce cardiovascular issues, as compared to other grape varieties.

So, when you share your next bottle of a good Pinot Noir you can truly toast, “To your health!”

Harpsichordist Paul Cienniwa keeps a busy schedule from his home base of Fall River. Music Director at the First Church in Boston, Director of the choral group, Sine Nomine, and a much sought after harpsichordist, Paul is always on the go, but always comes home to Fall River. I recently spoke to Paul about his life in music and in the South Coast.

Q. What is it like living in the South Coast.

A. After living in Newport for four years (I was teaching a lot at UMassDartmouth and served as music director at a couple of Newport churches), it came time to buy a house. Fall River was a great fit, with an active, vibrant city center, shopping without needing a car and easy access to all the main roads. I really like living in Fall River. The funny thing is that while some natives and suburbanites may not realize it, whenever my friends visit from other parts of the state and country, they have a very easy time finding what’s so good about the city.

I’ve lived in Chicago, Boston, Newport, New Haven, Brussels and a few other places, and I’ve traveled a lot.

Fall River—and the South Coast—has character, location, and a great quality of life. I feel lucky to live here.

Q. Why harpsichord?

A. When I was an undergraduate piano major in Chicago, I took an introductory class and was hooked very quickly. Most other harpsichordists I know gravitated to the harpsichord because they wanted to play

Bach and other baroque repertoire on the “correct” instrument. I came to the instrument because of its sound and especially because of the way the instrument feels under the fingers.

Simply put, it feels good.

Q. Was there anything or anybody that made a big difference to you in wanting to be a musician?

A. I was playing piano since age six, so my parents, of course, made the biggest difference. Before entering conservatory, I also played a number of other instruments, including French horn. One summer when I was about 15, I met Chicago Symphony hornist Dale Clevenger during intermission on the lawn at the Ravinia Festival.

That one encounter (I don’t even know what he said to me!) inspired me to practice and be more serious with my music. I think it was the realization that this music and the musicians who make it are entirely accessible and that I, one day, could be a part of that world.

Q. What the funniest or weirdest thing that has happened to you when transporting your harpsichord?

Paul Cienniwa makes harpsichord sing

A. Once in France, the promoter of a concert asked me to stand on a street corner with a harpsichord on its moving dolly while he opened the venue. He also asked me to watch his car, half a block away, so that he wouldn’t get a ticket. The street was on an incline, so I couldn’t let the harpsichord go or it would roll away.

While I was waiting, the local police came by and starting writing parking tickets for nearly every car on the block. I was in a panic, trying to hold the instrument while keeping an eye on the police! Just as they came to ticket the promoter’s car, they were called away to some other business.

It was a Chaplin-esque moment; the closest I’ve ever come to seeing my harpsichord roll down a hill!

Q. What do you like most about being a musician?

A. My schedule is different every day, and I get to work a lot from home. I love my colleagues!

Q. What do you like least?

A. Being a soloist is a lonely business, and it takes tremendous self-discipline because of all the practicing and preparing. Sometimes I wouldn’t mind a 9 to 5 job in which I wouldn’t have to tell myself what to do.

Q. Favorite piece of classical music?

A. Because baroque music is what I perform the most, I tend not to listen to it too much unless it’s live. That is, I don’t like recordings to influence my practice too much. That said, when I listen to recorded classical music, I will always turn to Philip Glass. Live music-wise, I love Schubert’s chamber music and symphonies, and I’m always happy to hear a Beethoven symphony. Come to think of it, Schubert 9 is my favorite work of all time.

Q. What music other than classi-

cal do you like?

A. My favorite Pandora channels at the moment are: Indian Classical, Alanis Morissette and Cat Stevens. Go figure.

Q. What musical highlights and projects do you have coming up over the next 6-12 months?

A. I’m really excited to play Poulenc’s Concert champêtre with the New Bedford Symphony next spring. This is a work I’ve studied over the years but never expected to play. Why? It’s for a Stravinsky-sized orchestra, and most of the groups I work with are much smaller and play on baroque-style period instruments. I’m also pulling together a CD recording project, hoping to record this summer for Whaling City Sound.

Hope Gallery and Bristol Art Gallery are well worth the drive to Hope Street in downtown Bristol no matter what your taste for the arts. Allow me to paint a picture for you, figuratively speaking of course, of the vibrant galleries and of the female artists who run them.

Hope Gallery Artist Anita Trezvant opened her gallery at 435 Hope Street seven years ago. Inspired by her Cape Verdean, French Canadian and Native American roots, Anita specializes in creating African Wrap Dolls. Fabricating these intricate dolls by hand is Anita’s favorite work as an artist, although she also loves designing jewelry. She got her start crafting the wrap dolls when she was just a girl of nine.

“There were no dolls that looked liked me at that time,” she explained when I asked where she found her inspiration.

“My mother, who is now 96, used to make sketches and design clothes, and she won awards for her work. I learned how to make dolls that looked like me from her,” she said proudly.

Rightly so, because these dolls are wonderful to see and hold, as they are handcrafted, one-of-a-kind and made from clay, cloth, wax and feathers.

Anita defines art in mind-opening terms: “Art is not necessarily a two-dimensional painting that hangs on the wall.

Art is something new. It is designed from the very beginning,” shared Anita.

I asked her to elaborate. “Art can be anything!” she exclaimed. For example, her dolls, though not paintings or drawings, are “put together from my mind,” therefore they are very much works of art.

Other artists have also found a place

at Hope Gallery, a welcoming space where fine arts and fine crafts shine.

Anita says she chooses to display the works of artists who use color and have originality, work that is “original, eclectic and affordable.”

Ewa Romaszewicz, one of those colorful and original artists, offers workshops in oil, landscape and still life.

Bristol Art Gallery Just two doors away from Hope Gallery is another art lover’s paradise.

At 423 Hope Street, Bristol Art Gallery is yet another scintillating space for paintings, sculpture, carvings, bronzes and pottery of many kinds.

Owner Nancy Pritchard, a sculptor, began her life in art as a child in New England, and has not stopped since.

“We (she and her husband) had a wildlife gallery in Florida, carrying bronzes of dolphins, sea turtles and mermaids and 10% of our profits were donated to charity,” she started off.

After returning home to New

England, Nancy and her husband Frank opened the Wooden Horse Gallery where they displayed and sold antiques for 18 years.

By late 2009, the antique business had declined, and the Wooden Horse Gallery closed.

Enter Bristol Art Gallery, the gallery Nancy has called her own for a little over a year now. With its generous wall and floor area, high ceilings, bright lights and gentle background music, Bristol Art Gallery is a contemporary space where local artists exhibit their pieces. I noticed many elaborate nature scenes along the walls as well as some very eccentric artwork on the floor.

Nancy pointed out that “Bristol is a waterfront, tourist town, and as you can see, many of our pieces are water pieces containing rowboats, harbors and beach scenes.” I couldn’t help but ask about the wildly unique clocks of all shapes and sizes hung throughout the gallery.

“Those clocks are designed and created by artist Craig Grab who makes them out of different objects that he finds; they all have an interesting background story,” said Nancy.

Stop in on a Saturday afternoon to be amazed by Tiago Finato, who will likely

be at work painting one of his stunning pieces. You may recognize his name as the artist who did a flawless painting of Lizzie Borden, the infamous nineteenthcentury murder suspect, for the Fall River Historical Society. He is also the young artist whose portrait of Mayor William Flanagan is displayed at the Fall River City Hall.

I asked Nancy why she has Tiago working at the front of the gallery for all to see, in a special area designated “the artists’ corner,” and she said that aside from allowing him to share his talent, she wants people to let go of their notions that art galleries are “intimidating.”

Nancy also wants her visitors’ trips to Bristol Art Gallery “to be an experience.”

As such, she showcases representational artwork, spanning from realism to impressionism, in an effort to offer “something for everyone.”

I got a strong sense from Nancy that she also wants art and its message to be inviting and available to everyone, to non-artists and would-be Picassos alike.

Neighbors Anita Trezvant and Nancy Pritchard, who share their dedication to familiarizing people with art, often join forces to host dual show openings.

Second Half offers sustainability conference

by Joan McKinley When we hear the phrase “eating local” we think of the farms in our area.

Many of them are adopting the practice of CSA’s or Community Supported Agriculture. In a 2009 survey conducted by the National Restaurant Association, professional chefs ranked locally grown produce as the most important food trend of the year. Picking up on this trend, the UMass Sustainability Office, The Second Half:Lifelong Learning Institute, and the U Mass Dartmouth Retirement Association will be offering a conference on sustainable living this summer from July 11 to July 14. The theme will be FOOD: Reclaiming our Community.

We’re all concerned about the quality of the food we eat, and this conference will inform and educate us about the choices that we have. The more informed we become, the better citizens we are.

We should know how to support ourselves locally. With gas prices going up and the possibility of storms or other events which might cut off our food supply from across the globe, we should know how to sustain ourselves in our own area.

You are what you eat Susan Jennings, Director of the Office of Sustainability will introduce Nutrients in soil. Speakers include Derek Christianson, a local farmer, and Katie; they founded a farm on Tucker Road in Dartmouth in 2008. Their Brix Bounty Farm focuses on producing and promoting nutrient dense foods using no chemicals or pesticides.

Derek began his CSA in 2010. Derek Christianson says that one of his goals is to produce food that tastes good. He wants a child to be able to eat something that he has grown, and remark on how good and tasty it is.

Brix is a measurement using a refractometer, which measures the sugar levels of the plant sap. A higher brix level indicates a higher level of minerals in the food. Derek is working to improve the soil quality of his farm, and says it is not a quick process, and takes time to achieve.

Food vulnerability An overview of Food Systems Challenges will be given by Bridget Alexander Ferriera, Executive Director of Southeastern Mass. Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP). The panel will consist of Jennifer Dubois, from Trustees of the Reservation, Jennifer Hashley, a farmer and Director for the new Entry Sustainable Farming Project at Tufts University, and Paul Schmid, State Representative.

Food availability Sarah Coggswell, the Buy Local Coordinator for SEMAP will introduce, and lead into the panel: David Weed, Kalia Lydgate and Barbara Anglin will discuss All Season Growing, Urban Farming, and Access. After the discussion, the group will depart for Kettle Pond Farm in Berkley, where lunch will be served, and there will be a tour of the farm.

Reclaiming our community Small changes—Huge Impact will be the focus of the panel, made up by Susan Peterson, Co Chair of SEMAP, Bridget Alexander Ferriera, Executive Director of SEMAP, and Jen Marshall, Director Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance. They will look at and discuss exhibits of Community Groups and Resources.

This conference is an opportunity to not only learn about creating good soil and growing healthy produce, but also about meeting other people who are concerned about the quality and availability of our food supply.

You may find yourself thinking differently about food and making changes in your habits after the conference. Fresher food means healthier people.

Registration for all four days of presentations is $140, three days at $115, two days at $75, or one day for $40. Each day is different with activities and speakers in different venues.
