leaders in medical research and that we are in a position to make a difference, both with our industry partners and with our patient community.”

As Dr. Miller explains: “We have major contacts with most of the domestic pharmaceutical companies as well as international companies.

We do research with drug companies throughout the world. We have been one of the real leaders in respiratory research in the United States for quite some time. Our experience extends from first-in-human studies which are some of the most difficult trials to do. They come first from animal modes. We are one of the first sites to try them in the human model.”

In describing the multiphase testing protocol, Dr. Miller notes, “The higher the phase number the more trials have been done on a drug product.

Phase 1 is typically a safety or efficacy trial where we want to see if the drugs actually work. They’ve already been through the animal testing and then they come to find out the nuances of the drug; does it work? What’s the profile of the drug in the body? How is it distributed, how is it metabolized, all of those things. Those are small but very intense studies. We’re one of the few Phase 1 sites in the Northeast that can do those studies.”

Participants in these Phase 1 trials are sometimes required to stay in-house. “We have a 14 bed facility where people can be housed to do these trials,” says Dr. Miller. The unit includes private sleeping quarters, a kitchen area, and living area which can be viewed on NEMRA’s website.

Small trials “Phase II trials are small, what we call efficacy trials where we’re actually trying to study more about the drug in the population they are looking for. We can see how efficacious the drugs are.

Then, if that’s successful, the studies move into what we call large, Phase III studies where we take thousands of patients from across the United States and across the world in looking at the

true efficacy of the drug.

“Once drugs get through Phase III, that’s where the data is submitted to the FDA for approval. It can take years before the drug gets to that point.

Then the FDA looks at the data. If those drugs do get approved, Phase IV is what are called marketing studies.

They’ll do comparative trials to other drugs in the same class. They’ll do patient preference studies if it’s a device.

Phase IV is usually after the drug has been approved. The nuts and bolts are from Phase I through Phase III. “Clinical studies or trials are keys to determining the safety and effectiveness of newly developed medications, treatments and medical devices and are required by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”

Multi-phase testing The lengthy, multi-phase testing process explains in part the significant cost of modern medications. Dr. Miller notes that current statistics suggest that about 1 in 10 drugs that actually get filed with the FDA ever make it to the market place or into the medicine cabinet.

He explains further: “The drug companies get a 15 year patent on these drugs before the generics can be made. The clock starts running from the time they file with the FDA to even investigate it. So if the drug takes ten years to develop, they have only five years to sell it. Then the opportunity exists for generic companies to utilize all of the hard work of the major pharmaceutical companies, and then sell their own brand. Many people have thought that there probably should be a better way that you can lower the price of drugs…to make the patent start when the drug gets through.

The staff of NEMRA includes six board certified physicians; and a full time staff of 14 employees who are all involved in conducting the clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. and Europe.

NEMRA is also affiliated with Allergy Associates, a major clinical practice in Massachusetts. Each physician sees private patients who often become

associated with the clinical research studies.

As Dr. Miller says, “Because we’ve been a leader for so many years in treating people with respiratory disorders, many our patients in the practice also participate in the research studies. Many of our research patients have also become our patients… they know we have the pulse of what’s going on, because we’re a leader in what we do. People know that they have access to newer treatments that are not available to the public. They can take an active role in their own health care.”

Research volunteers are always welcome and would be evaluated, based upon a complete medical history.

There are many positive advantages to being involved in the research.

“We’ve always felt that patients who do research probably get better care than they receive from their own physicians.

Many safeguards “There are so many safeguards that are built into these protocols, and the testing that is done is so extensive. Quite often we have picked up other diagnoses that patients were not aware of, just in the screening process. People feel that when they come here, they are taking control of their own health, and they have the opportunity to get access to better medication. And they know, by participation in the trial, they’re helping other people with the same condition.

That’s important as well.”

at the 2011 South Coast Artists Studio Tours

The South Coast Artists (SCA) Studio Tours is a regional institution.

After 15 years the SCA is still growing in popularity. A record 70 artists have already signed on for summer 2011. Last year’s tour attracted large crowds of curious visitors including art collectors and enthusiasts, vacationers and visitors, and local families.

Though in recent years art viewers and buyers dwindled, SCA’s audience grew. A dedicated and creative management team works hard to keep the tour fresh and inviting each year, for both artists and attendees.

The SCA Studio Tours are guided each year by a theme. Last year’s theme was “Start Your Art Engines,” referring to the geographic scope of the tour through Tiverton, Little Compton, Dartmouth and Westport.

The 2011 theme is “Art & Soul”—an uplifting idea following an icy season.

Visitors emerge from memories of a frigid winter and spring to enjoy a treasure hunt in an idyllic journey through a landscape of farms and beaches, renewing the spirit by meeting artists who are passionate about creating.

This year’s tours take place on July 16 and 17 and on August 20 and 21.

According to the SCA, “South Coast Artists open their hearts and souls, where color, shapes, materials, and textures are transformed into unique & collectible works of art. We believe if given a choice art lovers experience and seek art that has soul and 20

meaning, work that speaks to a larger purpose.”

As an incentive to produce work for the tour, artists are invited to participate in a juried competition, submitting art that best meets the tour theme. This year’s juror is Karla Little, South Coast resident and owner and producer of three renowned Fine Furnishings & Fine Craft Shows in Providence, Baltimore, MD, and Milwaukee, WI.

While the Studio Tours are a conspicuous annual event, the SCA is active year round. The organization offers membership to South Coast Artists for a reasonable fee. In exchange, artists receive continuous

It’s challenging to keep annual events fresh and attract new audiences. The SCA Studios Tours continues to grow its audience, and increase the number of artists applying to participate. Good planning, strong artist participation, and extraordinary administrative vision merge to create a dynamic arts event. Nearly 50 corporate sponsors supported last year’s tour.

Strong attendance is due, in part, to outstanding marketing and outreach efforts. 2010 print advertising efforts were estimated to reach 1.94 million subscribers, with a total of 62 print ads hitting audiences throughout Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Metro Boston. Web and social media efforts brought in new audiences. A partnership with WGBH increased the frequency of radio advertising. Finally, print and online tour brochures connected with over 50,000 people.

Key to the overall success of the SCA is the inclusion of member artists in organizational decision-making. The resulting sense of ownership leads to a strong arts community.

Artist Wayne Fuerst shows his pottery and paper work at his gallery and gift shop, Sticks, Stones and Stars in Westport. He participates in both the

July and August studio tours. His business partner attends SCA meetings throughout the year. Fuerst recognizes the value of the studio tours in building a wide audience for his art, and for the artists and artisans exhibiting in his gallery.

He comments, “We meet a lot of non-artists during the South Coast Studio Tour. That’s different than some of the other tours. It’s nice to meet different people—and a younger audience. We do demonstrations in pottery, papermaking, and jewelry. It’s nice to educate non-artists about how things are done.”

Good business The studio tour attracts nearly 200 people to the gallery each weekend and Fuerst expects an increase in sales. He says, “We do really well during tour weekends. The demonstrations help with sales, but it’s really about sharing. I teach near Boston so I invite people down to see my work and that adds to the number of tour visitors. If people are visiting the Tiverton Four Corners shops they often stop in here during the tour and vice versa. The tour adds to the economy of the area.”

One of the most important aspects of the SCA is that it proves that good business and good art are not mutually exclusive. The stereotype portrays artists as rash and negligent about financial matters, but that is hardly ever the case; to survive and live well, artists must be especially savvy about running their businesses. The SCA can be an important collaborator for artists trying to develop a lucrative business in the South Coast. he 97th annual Portuguese Feast of the Blessed Sacrament has become the signature summer event of New Bedford and the South Coast.

Held on the first weekend of August, this year’s 4-day event opens on Thursday, August 4th at 6 pm with ceremonies at the monument dedicated to the founding fathers.

Recognized as the Largest Portuguese Feast in the World and the largest ethnic festival in New England, the Feast attracts thousands of visitors from New England and beyond. A hard working volunteer committee of more than 50 feisterios (committee members) work for a full year in the planning to make each year’s event more successful.

uly is one of my favorite months for farmers’ markets in the South Coast because while my garden might be a few weeks away from its first harvest, local farmers have an abundance of perfectly ripe vegetables like zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, and green beans, and succulent fruits like raspberries and blueberries all ready to enjoy.

I’m a believer that the more you know about the food you put on your plate, the healthier you’ll eat, and buying direct from local farms is one of the best ways to keep tabs on your food’s origins. With over a dozen farmers’ markets scattered throughout the South Coast this summer, it’s never been easier to enjoy fresh, local fruits and vegetables every day of the week.

for the streusel: 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 tablespoon cinnamon 6 tablespoons cold butter 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven 325 degrees. Grease and flour three 8” x 4” loaf pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.

In a large bowl beat the eggs, olive oil, sugar, and vanilla. Add the flour mixture and stir until just combined (do not over mix). Stir in the zucchini. Set aside.

For the streusel, combine the brown sugar, flour and cinnamon in a bowl. Add in cubes of the cold butter. Using your fingertips, pinch together the mixture to form a loose crumb. Stir in the walnuts and chocolate chips.

Spoon approximately 1 cup of batter into each loaf pan. Sprinkle each with 3/4 cup of the streusel mixture. Top with the remaining batter and then with a final layer of streusel on top. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

‘Sun tea’ for summer

etting enough fluids

every day is very important, expecially in the heat of summer. And it’s not just a matter of satisfying thirst. Not having enough fluids can contribute to increased blood pressure, urinary tract irritation/infection, constipation, fatigue, headaches, low grade fever, and an overall malaise.

Proper water balance is essential for healthy cell metabolism, maintaining body temperature, proper cardiovascular, digestive and kidney functioning, flushing out toxins, etc.

The most well-known general guideline for adults calls for 8 servings of 8 ounces (the 8 x 8 rule) of fluids per day, but other adult daily guidelines recommend even more: 13 cups per day for males and 9 for females.

Most any beverage other than those with alcohol will work to hydrate—so there are plenty of options other than water! This is where “sun tea” comes in as a great choice for the summer.

It’s easy to make, zero calories, energy free (no heating up the kitchen) and very refreshing.

For 4-5 servings, just take a large clear glass container (approx. 32 ounces) fill with filtered water, put in 4-5 bags of your favorite teas, cap or cover and place outside in the direct hot sun to “steep” for three hours. Pour your serving, add ice and you are good to go! Refrigerate what’s left for use later in the day.

The sky is the limit for creating your own special sun tea flavor or variety.

Using herbal flavored teas such as peppermint, green tea, or blackberry, and adding lemon, lime or thin strawberry slices and mint leaves gives the batch an extra zesty, tasty flavor when sun infused. For a pretty ruby color

as well as added health benefits try a batch with elderberry or hibiscus tea.

The results of any of these combinations is so surprisingly rich in flavor that it requires little if any added sugar or honey for a truly thirst quenching drink.

Trying to lose weight?

Not only does sun tea have zero calories, but it may help one to stave off hunger, fight that urge to snack or to take an extra helping. Recently it was reported that drinking cold water when thirsty actually can help a person to lose weight because the body must burn up calories to counteract the water’s cooling in the digestive tract. So it’s likely that an iced tea beverage would do the same.

When not to drink!

A short time before or after meal time is fine, but during a meal is not the time to down a beverage especially a cold one. So often we have the urge to wash down our meal with fluids rather than to chew our food properly. Drinking too much at meal time dilutes both saliva and stomach enzymes as well as stomach acid thus

interfering with proper food metabolism. Drinking a cold beverage while one is consuming a meal can further add to digestion/stomach problems.

Why do we forget to hydrate? As we age, we may think that we“forget” to take the time to get the adequate daily fluid intake. Actually it’s not really a matter of forgetting, it’s that our brain becomes less adept at detecting real dehydration and is inadequate at triggering thirst signals to “tell” us to drink. Just knowing this can help us understand the increased need for better self-monitoring and for getting a strategy in place to ensure proper hydration. Some find it useful to measure out an amount in a container that they’re supposed to drink everyday to keep track of what they need.

Finally, during times of high heat and when we are exerting ourselves and sweating a lot our need to take in extra fluids and electrolytes increases to counteract both fluid and sodium loss.

Experts warn that the sensation of thirst alone is not the best indicator of our body’s need for hydration, not only because we detect thirst less when we age but because the sensation of thirst can be satisfied before our body has actually replenished the lost fluids. This is especially the case during extreme heat and/or physical exertion. During these conditions it is best to replace the amount of fluid that one is sweating; one indicator of fluid need is weight loss and low urine output during the same day of the extreme heat, physical activity and sweating.

So whether you are very active or just relaxing by the pool during the long, hot summer days, remind yourself to hydrate up—and consider sun All major credit cards accepted tea as one great way to do that!

Old McDonald had a Pharm…

by Elizabeth Morse Read In the good ol’ summertime, you fire up the BBQ grill for steaks, burgers, spareribs and chicken, and maybe serve an egg-salad on the side. Such a good parent and host you are! Not! Picture this Norman Rockwell scenario: an idyllic grass-and-flower pasture in late afternoon, a herd of contented cows grazing on the sweet grass before milking, the pasture dotted with “cow patties” that fertilize the grasses. A flock of chickens and their chicks darts about, eating insects and seeds, while pigs root and forage near the trees. The farmer and his family care for the land and their animals, eat natural pasture/grass-fed meat, milk and eggs, and sell their surplus to neighbors.

That’s a nice fantasy Fast-forward to the reality of CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations—also called “factory farms”), the agribusinesses’ alternative reality: Tens of thousands of cows or chickens or pigs are packed into hangarsized pens, fed “artificial” feed, doused with chemicals, fattened with hormones, then shipped to the slaughterhouses in record time. These animals never see natural light, breathe fresh

air, nor eat the food Mother Nature intended them to eat.

They are highly susceptible to disease and dysfunction because of the congested and putrid environments they’re confined to, their bodies are saturated with unnatural chemicals and pathogens—and that’s what is sizzling on your BBQ grill, folks.

Let’s look at how this perversion of the natural process, in pursuit of the lowest-cost, highest–profit “product,” ignores basic biology. Cows, whether bred for meat or milk, are “ruminants,” a class of herbivore mammals with a multi-chambered “stomach” designed for digesting grasses (this group includes cows, sheep, goats, llamas, bison, deer, etc.). They “chew their cud,” in an intricate digestive process designed to extract the maximum nutrients that will go into their meat and milk.

Factory-farm cows are forced to eat “cheap” corn/soy grain mixes (twothirds of all U.S grain production is used for livestock feed) that have been adulterated with “food by-products” (like stale bubble-gum still in the aluminum wrapper, recycled restaurant grease and chicken manure) and bizarre trash like plastic pot-

scrubbers and shredded telephone books. They’re pumped with artificial hormones to speed growth, increase weight and milk/egg production; they’re filled with antibiotics to ward off infections or pathogens (whether they’re sick or not), and doused with toxic pesticides—all due to the overcrowded, unnatural conditions.

But the unnatural feed lacks the roughage of grass and hay, so cows develop severe indigestion and a potentially-fatal disorder called “foamy bloat.” The overcrowding breeds “feedlot diseases,” like polio, shipping fever, liver abscesses—and allows rapid spread of any pathogen or organism than can cause everything from madcow disease to MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureas), which remains in the meat, milk, dairy products and eggs you feed your family.

Meanwhile, starting in 2003, Japan (the top importer of U.S. beef) halted imports when cases of BSE (mad-cow disease) appeared in U.S. cattle.

And everything that is introduced into and stored in the animal’s body, whether in the flesh or the milk, is in what you buy at the market. It then is absorbed by your body, possibly making you overweight, sluggish and susceptible to a host of medical disorders.

Chicken Little was right…

Chickens and turkeys face a similar CAFO fate. Whether “broilers” bred for their meat or laying hens for their eggs, sometimes up to 25,000 birds are crowded into enclosed confinement sheds, with less than threequarters of a square foot of personal space for their entire life. On some factory farms, chicks are “de-beaked” to prevent fighting, and male chicks are destroyed because they’re too scrawny (plus, they don’t lay eggs).

The fecal matter on the concrete floor creates a noxious cloud of ammonia, which even factory workers can succumb to.

and other artificial additives that speed growth and weight, chickens on factory farms reach that weight in only six weeks. This unnatural growth creates a condition called ascites, a heart and lung failure which kills millions of chickens every year, costing the CAFOs up to $500 billion.

Aritificial light 23 hours a day speeds growth, but suppresses the chickens’ immune systems, so they’re dosed with vaccines and antibiotics to prevent outbreaks due to the CAFO conditions. Factory poultry farmers also feed their chickens arsenic (it supposedly speeds growth) and rinse their carcasses in chlorinated water to kill bacteria. As of result of these practices, the European Union has banned the import of U.S. poultry since 1997. (But that’s what they sell for Americans to eat?)

Meanwhile, back on the (cow) farm…

Cows who cannot stand, whether sick or lame, cannot be slaughtered for meat according to federal law. Yet undercover videos show “downer” cattle being “tazed” with electric prods to get them upright in time for slaughter (and this particular feedlot operation in California supplies school-lunch beef for dozens of states.) And, while pasture-fed dairy cows produce healthful milk for at least ten years, most factory-farm dairy cows are headed for the slaughterhouse after two years, either because they don’t breed, their milk production is unsatisfactory, or they succumb to disease/ dysfunction. What’s wrong with this picture? And don’t forget that CAFOs and their suppliers are subsidized by the federal government!

The meat products you eat…

Pasture-fed cows produce healthier meat and milk for human consumption, and pasture-raised/free-range chickens produce more nutritious meat and eggs for human consumption.

Many studies have shown that naturally-raised animals provide foods that are higher in vitamins and nutrients, lower in unhealthy fats, and free of artificial additives (like hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, weird chemicals). You don’t have to be an animal-activist to appreciate that how we treat our food-animals ends up in our own bodies, no matter the cost at the meat counter.

In addition, think about this: it takes 15 pounds of carbon dioxide to produce one pound of factory-farmed beef. Factory-farmed animals often harbor antiobiotic-resistant pathogens (that you then ingest), even after they’ve been irradiated and dunked in who-knows-what, none of which kills off the viruses that cause mad-cow disease, hepatitis or swine/avian flu.

And then during slaughter, processing, and shipping, they pick up e. coli, salmonella and staph infections that result in food recalls (but only after people get sick). Don’t rely on the USDA or the FDA to look out for your best interests…

So what can you do?

Be aware of where your meat, dairy and eggs products come from. Whenever possible, buy from local farmers who practice grass/pasture-fed methods. (Go to www.semaponline.org or www.farmfresh.org to find local farms that produce sustainable and healthful foods or local farmer’s markets.)

Follow basic food safety measures when handling meat/dairy/ egg products—especially in summer months [see sidebar]. Avoid eating meat by-products like sausages, “blood-puddings,” cold cuts or hot-dogs year-round, but especially in months that don’t have an “R’” in their name (e.g., May, June, July, August) [I learned this from my grandmother], especially if they’ll be exposed to the hot outdoors at the beach/picnic/cookout for more than a few minutes.

For BBQ, pre-cook/poach chicken and pork in the microwave to ensure they’re thoroughly cooked to the bone.

Never return cooked/grilled meats to platters that held raw/marinating meats. Use clean knives to carve them, not the same ones that cut up the raw meat.

Remember that egg/mayonnaisebased summer salads can become “food-poisonous” if exposed to heat or sun.

Restaurant woes

The next time you step into a restaurant, think about the work that must go on behind the scenes.

Obviously there’s cooking and waiters or waitresses involved, but think of all the other workers: dishwashers, hostesses, prep cooks. And accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, maintenance.

While the recession has affected businesses all across the country in negative ways, few industries have been as hard-hit as restaurants. We can all name at least five restaurants— and those are just the ones we know of—that have gone under during the past few years, some big names and some small ones that were just scraping by even during good times.

The owner, Goldman said, has to be fully committed to the restaurant, maintain a positive organizational culture, and be attentive to the customers’ needs.

“The weak economy, high gas prices, and decreasing discretionary income have caused a shift in the consumers’ attitude, and choices.

Many have ‘traded down’ in their dining choices, and cut back on the number of visits,” added Goldman.

“Still, the numbers are trending up for the industry, with the biggest gains being in the fast casual segment.”

Massachusetts Restaurant Association’s President and CEO Peter Christie said the thing the recession has done to the industry is force them to really pay attention to their business and do everything they can to exceed customer expectations.

Small profit margins The profit margin for restaurants is small, and any miscalculations or poor decisions could lead to crippling the operation. John Goldman, Southeastern Massachusetts SCORE Counselor with 40 years in the food brokerage business, teaches a variety of restaurant seminars aimed at helping existing restaurants improve their entire operation.

Goldman said restaurants fail for a whole host of reasons, including under capitalization; improper background, lack of training or experience; poor cash flow controls, and location.

“A bad location is one of the biggest, if not the biggest reason for restaurant failure; poor viability, poor parking and no foot traffic,” said Goldman, “Those restaurants that do succeed provide a distinctive concept, have made good decisions on long term 34

“With the difficulty in capturing the market share now, if you don’t have good food, you are going to fail, and people are paying more attention to service now then ever. Restaurants know there are an abundance of choices out there, and want the customers coming back,” said Christie.

“But the value out there now is likely the best I have ever seen, and my wife and I find it less expensive and far more convenient to eat out then to go through the hassle of cooking in. And you see that across the whole spectrum. Fine dining has been replaced by casual dining.”

Christie said despite some of the doom and gloom surrounding the industry, restaurants are continuing to open and succeed—where many before it have failed. But restaurants have to continue to diversify and retool their menus.

“There’s an old saying that ‘if you are not going forward, you are falling behind’ and there’s no industry where this is truer than the restaurant industry. You have to constantly change and keep up with what customers are looking for,” Christie said.

One restaurant that has been able to sustain the financial windfall of the recession and still manage to stay very busy is that of North Dartmouth’s “Not Your Average Joe’s.”

Steve not average Owner Steve Silverstein operates a total of 15 restaurants including in Hyannis, Virginia and a new one planned in the spot of the former Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse in Seekonk. Silverstein said the recession has weeded out a number of restaurants, many that had barely clung to life long before the recession hit.

“Like anything, only the strong survive and the weak go by the wayside, but the restaurant industry is not as profitable as people think and when sales decline, those hanging on by a string will fall,” said Silverstein.

As for mistakes that could prove lethal, Silverstein said when times get tough like they are now, the knee-jerk

reaction would be to reduce the portions of the meals or cut back on staffing levels, but it is the opposite that should be happening.

“You need to be better than ever now, not just in the food you provide but in the service as well. You need to deliver on a promise to provide the best possible service to your customers, but unfortunately sometimes this thinking is backwards,” said Silverstein.

“It’s a great business, and though at one time it wasn’t considered to be a “professional” industry, the creation of cooking shows and the focus on chefs have elevated the industry.”

Mirroring Goldman’s comments, Silverstein said he sees a number of restaurants fail because the owners misjudged the amount of money needed to open and operate. In one recent scenario in the South Coast, a restaurant lease was signed, money was poured into the rehabilitation of a building and the owner ran out of money even before the doors were opened.

Good ideas “They may have had a good idea, but ninety percent of all restaurants are undercapitalized and that’s why they run into these problems,” said Silverstein.

Silverstein said restaurants should focus on separating themselves from the pack any way they can and hopefully stand out in doing so.

“We don’t need another restaurant just for the sake of have another one around. There needs to be a different spin. You can’t just say you’ve found a way to make a better hamburger. It’s just not enough,” said Silverstein.

“The tragedy we see is people who have their whole life savings in a restaurant and lose it all. They didn’t have a good plan or didn’t have enough in the bank to withstand the learning curve. It’s an incredibly dangerous business, but its one that could be incredibly advantageous if done right. It’s a big if.”

At one time, not too long ago, wines made from the Riesling grape were the “in” white wine.

Classic Chardonnays from France tended to be more expensive, rather dry, and the labels were too confusing. California Rieslings were sort of dull and sweet.

So it is not surprising that over the last three decades Chardonnay and even Sauvignon Blanc wines have surpassed Riesling in the U.S. wine market. However, Riesling is still a very good choice for a cool white wine, especially in the summertime.

Today, there are many good sources for reasonably priced Riesling from Germany and France, and many areas of the U.S.

Read the labels The French and U.S have straightforward labels, but the Germans still have a complex system for the labels of their classic Rieslings. These German labels do provide a lot of information that indicates how sweet the wine may be and provide definitive geographical location. Most of the German labels are quiet readable, though a few classical German wine producers still cling to the old style labels, but these just look complicated.

While Riesling is the premier wine of

Germany it is also produced in northeastern France in the Alsace region as well as in the U.S. and other parts of the world. The Alsatian Rieslings tend to be a bit dryer (less sweet) that the Germans, although the Germans are also producing dry Riesling.s In Germany they will add the words “Trocken,”, meaning dry, and “Halbtroken” meaning “half dry.” Some of the Alsatian Riesling producers add those same words.

The Germans also have series of descriptors used on their labels based on the level of ripeness of grape when they were picked: Ayler Kupp in the Mosel region produces a 2009 Riesling labeled as a “Spatlese” meaning late harvest. It is available for $15 a bottle. They use “Auslese” meaning selected riper grape bunches, and “Beerenauslese“ meaning selected riper grape from the riper bunches.

There are also “Trockenberenauslese,” meaning selected dried berries. In addition, when grape bunches are left on the vines to freeze, these grapes are used to make “Eiswien” (Ice wine).

Wineries in New York have been able to make some very pleasant

Riesling wines for many years, but unfortunately, the New York Rieslings were not readily available in the mainstream U.S. market. The early California Rieslings were initially dull and flabby, but since Germany and New York produced many very good to superb quality Rieslings, Riesling wines were still popular in the U.S.

Success in the West Eventually the wineries of California were able to find the best land for growing Riesling and they soon made some excellent Riesling wines. For some years now, Riesling is also doing very well in Washington and Oregon.

So today Riesling lovers can choose from a large range of wine regions that produce great Rieslings.

It is interesting to note that some of the Rieslings from California are labeled Johannesburg Riesling.

(Referring to Schloss Johannesburg, one of the great German Riesling vineyards on the Rhine.) This is done in order to prevent their being confused with wines made from “other” clones and hybrids of Riesling which have names like Monterey Riesling, Grey Riesling, Emerald Riesling and Sylvaner Riesling. Once again, the consumer is the one paying the price of misappropriating classic names for “wanna be” wines. Some of these names are found on “jug” wines and do quiet well for simmer picnics.

Great reviews A good indicator of the rise in popularity of Riesling is shown by Food & Wine magazine selecting a Riesling as one of the 67 top American wines $15 and under to buy by the case. In fact, their recent press release picked five wines to represent the list and one of them was the Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling from Washington State, priced today at about $18.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling is describes as being a almost dry, crisp, refreshing style of Riesling with beautiful fruit flavors, crisp acidity, beautiful ripe peach and apricot aromas with a clean finish. This is an

incredibly versatile food wine and my favorite with oysters. It was recently rated at 89 by the Wine Enthusiast magazine.

They said “Rieslings have been growing hugely in popularity over the past couple of years, partly thanks to wines like this one.” The Washington state Rieslings tend to be fairly dry with great acidity, and have an appleand-peach fruit flavor, and a zesty finish. But while is very good and a real bargain, it doesn’t quit come off like the classic German Rieslings.

Chateau Ste. Michelle also produces a Dry Riesling; their 2009 is available locally at Douglas Wine & Sprits in Fall River for $12. They also carry Chateau Ste. Michelle 2010 Harvest Select. Columbia Crest, also from Washington, offers their Grand Estate 2007 Riesling for $11. One magazine describes this wine as having “perfectly ripe fruit flavors; a mix of grapes, apples and oranges in equal proportion; balance is just about perfect.”

California can now produce many excellent Riesling wines. One popular California Riesling is KendalJackson’s 2009 Reserve Riesling made from grapes grown in the Monterey. It is fairly full bodied, has 13% alcohol, and is priced at $13.

Chateau St. Jean’s, located in Sonoma County, quite north of Monterrey, produced their 2007 Riesling, which sells for $17 and has been described as being “elegant.”

It is obvious that Riesling wines made in Europe set a high standard.

But with time, the vineyardists and oenologists of California, Australia, South Africa and South America have been able to find the right soil, climate, weather, viticulture and processing techniques to put the Riesling grape from around the world, upon the throne of great wines, along with their German and Alsatian cousins.

So today you can try to taste them all and consider your self on a quest.

You’ll be well rewarded when you find the Rieslings that you love.

Creative commuting

If you are lucky enough to be gainfully employed, getting to and from work is simply a necessity.

Unfortunately, with the rising cost of gasoline, your commute to work is becoming more expensive, and depending on the length, may become unaffordable.

Then what? Find a lower paying job closer to home? Quit your job?

In these hard economic times there don’t seem to be a lot of options. Or maybe there are. Driving to work alone in a “Single Occupancy Vehicle” (SOV) is the way most of us get to work. But there are definitely others ways to get to your job, some you’ve probably never considered.

Walk, work from home, and flex If you actually live within walking or bicycling distance to your job, have you ever considered getting to work that way? A small but growing percentage of people in the region are using these methods to commute to and from work. It’s economical and healthy and you never have to worry about finding or paying for parking.

More and more employers are making telecommuting, or working from home, for one or more days per week, an option to their employees. By instituting a telecommuting policy, companies not only help reduce single occupancy vehicle (SOV) travel to the work site, they can also save on office space and overhead.

Some employers are offering “flex time” to their work force. Flex time is a variable work schedule in contrast to a traditional 9 to 5 work day. Employees can choose when they work, subject to achieving total daily, weekly or monthly hours. The benefits to flex time are numerous, including being able to commute during non-rush hours or working fewer, albeit longer days, per week.

Re-discovering carpooling There are several Park & Ride lots in the area, including 3 in New Bedford, 2 in Somerset and 1 each in Mattapoisett, Freetown and Fairhaven that can be utilized by those who wish to share trips with friends or coworkers. If you need to find someone to share rides with, the MassRides website, www.commute.com, as well as the website www.eRideShare.com are great places to start. It’s as easy as signing up, typing in the origin zip code and the direction you are traveling to find other car poolers in your area.

Let’s not forget public transit in our region. For local service, the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) serves the towns of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, Freetown, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Somerset, Swansea and Westport. The Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) 27 communities to the north. Bus schedules and fares can be found on their websites. For STRA,

www.srtabus.com and for GATRA, www.gatra.org.

There is commuter train service from our region to the Boston area from the Lakeville / Middleborough station. Schedules and fares are on the website www.mbta.com.

More transit options Three private bus companies operate longer distance intercity service across the region. Bloom Bus Lines operates service from Taunton to Boston. DATTCO operates service from New Bedford to Boston via Taunton and runs numerous daily services throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. Peter Pan Bus Lines - Providence Division operates several trips: Boston to Woods Hole; New York to Cape Cod via Providence; Newport to Boston via Fall River; Providence to Boston; and New York to Providence.

There are private van services. One such service, called Yes! We Van, was started in 2008 by 3 commuters from the region when they leased four 15-passenger vans to get themselves and fellow commuters from here to Boston every day. They currently accommodate 38-40 commuters in any given week with four morning departures from 5:00 to 6:40 from New Bedford to Boston, with a stop in Taunton and four afternoon departures from 3 to 5:45 from Boston back to New Bedford, also with a stop in Taunton. Instead of a set rate, the monthly fee varies month to month based on total number of riders. For more information, go to their website at www.yeswevan.org.

Finally, the MassRides website, (address above) is a great resource for all of these, as well as other alternative commuting strategies. You can save money, reduce your carbon footprint and your stress by trying one of them.

There are much better ways of commuting than simply getting into your car alone and driving to work.

The Buzzards Bay Musicfest

W

here can you hear music performed at the highest artistic level, in a beautiful seashore setting, for free? For fifteen years, the answer has been the Buzzards Bay Musicfest.

Established in 1997, the Buzzards Bay Musicfest is a four-day concert series featuring some of the country’s finest musicians performing the great pieces of the classical music repertoire.

Under the musical leadership of Maestro Russell Patterson, the festival has become the musical highlight of the summer season in the South Coast.

Nationally recognized artists are invited to participate in the Musicfest and live with host families for the week of the festival. The Musicfest takes place on the campus of Tabor Academy in Marion, at the Fireman Performing Arts Center.

This year’s festival will present a variety of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Haydn (as well as others) and will feature virtuoso violinist Brian Lewis performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Also on the program is Beethoven’s magnificent Piano Concerto No. 3.

Quality and accessibility According to the Musicfest’s Board Chair, Sally Madison, the original concept for the fest was based on the Sunflower Music Festival, a highly

regarded music festival in Topeka, Kansas.

The goals of the Musicfest are to present an annual summer concert series by a professional orchestra and chamber ensembles featuring music programs of the highest quality, to add to the cultural and educational life of the community, and to stimulate interest and support for the arts.

To ensure the broadest impact possible, the Musicfest has never charged admission to its concerts. While partially funded by an endowment, the Musicfest primarily relies on the generosity of donors to sustain the festival on an annual basis. Hardworking board members, host families, volunteers and a part-time staff member put in countless hours to make the festival a reality every year.

Each year the festival presents a Children’s Open Rehearsal, a special opportunity for children to experience classical music and meet professional musicians. According to Musicfest Executive Director Kim Teves, for some children the open rehearsal is their first time hearing an orchestra perform, while for others who are taking music lessons, it is a chance for them to see the mastery of professional musicians and engage with them at a post-rehearsal meet and greet event.

Variety and challenge As Artistic Director of the Musicfest since its inception, Russell Paterson has made it a point of pride to never perform the same piece twice and to always include one piece each year that none of the musicians have ever played before. These are challenges that the maestro cherishes, and his artistic vision has been the heart and soul of the festival for these fifteen years.

For classical music newcomers and long-time concertgoers, this is the perfect music festival. In addition to the beautiful setting, the consummate skill and artistry of the performers, (and the free admission), the Musicfest’s wide-range of musical offerings and variety of ensembles ensures that there is something for everyone.

The Buzzards Bay Musicfest has it all: a full classical orchestra performing a Beethoven piano concerto, a flute quartet by Mozart, a Brahms sextet, a baroque concerto by Telemann, a Rossini overture, and Tchaikovsky, Poulenc and Dohnanyi added for good measure.

July 2-3 Kick off the Fourth weekend with New Bedford Summerfest held at the Whaling National Historical Park, New Bedford. Entertainment on seven stages, 90 craft booths, a food court and expanded children’s activities. New this year: Toe Jam Puppet Band on Sunday (free).
