Keep a stiff upper class

Who’s there?

Prince Charles.

Prince Charles who?

Bloody good question!

OK, quiz time: Just what is Prince Charles’s full name? a) Charlie “The King of Entitlement” Royaldude? b) Chuckie “Dumbo Ears” Prince? c) Jolly Cholli Choo-Choo Da Chazza? d) Charles Mountbatten-Windsor?

If you guessed “d”, you’re right. And you have way too much time on your hands if you know such things.

Of course you know his full name is Charles Philip Arthur George. And if you met him you would know enough to call him Your Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Unless you were in Scotland, where you would know he is the Duke of Rothesay.

Aside from no one knowing your name, it might be good to be almostking, but hard when those to whom 6

you haven’t been properly introduced bump into you on the street. And when driving through a crowd of young demonstrators protesting tuition increases. Seems last month the royal car with Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla “Boom-Boom” Bowles, was spotted by the crowd, some of whom reportedly yelled “Off with their heads!” and battered the vintage Phantom VI Rolls Royce with fists, boots, and paint bombs.

Frankly, I’m disappointed. You’d think English college kids would have had much heavier bottles of Guinness.

Then again, why waste good stout?

Seems the royal fun-loving couple was on their way to the London Palladium for a gala Christmas charity event, which is part of the grueling schedule they have as part of their job is going to parties.

Seriously. This is what they do. For work. Considering the royal family is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, it’s not bad work if you can get it. Or, rather, are born to it.

As Mark Bolland, a former family press officer, was quoted as saying, “The Windsors are very good at working three days a week, five months of the year and making it look as though they work hard.”

Still, it must have been scary for the prince and his wife to be attacked like that. I mean, it’s probably the closest they’ve ever been to real English people. My God, culture shock like that is pretty frightening and positively unsettling. But they got to their event unscathed and where Camilla joked, “First time for everything.”

Poor thing. It’s not easy marrying into a family of inbred freaks, but at least she’s okay.

Windsor wedding waste I guess what also got me thinking about all this is the pending marriage of one of Chuckie’s kids, Prince Harry or Prince William, they’re pretty much interchangeable royal heads. When news broke about the marriage to Kate what’s-her-name, the world focus changed from such trivial matters as a tanking economy and unwinnable war to this.

News programs led with it, night after night, and the Today Show was positively agog over what is being touted as “The Most Humongous Waste of Money of the Century,” which I confess is my take on the wedding.

The royal family said they’ll pay for the wedding, not to worry. But everyone else (taxpayers) is footing the royal bill for security, which will be in the millions.

And what’s nice to know, if the country went belly up financially, the royal family would be just fine. A friend of mine, a decided anti-royalist, says that in our country, people like Bernie Madoff can scam billions and then go broke. In England, the royal family does pretty much the same thing and will never live anything but a life of luxury. Completely outdated, useless tradition will see to that.

Sometimes I think it’s just us, or maybe the rest of the world, too. I was in the company of English people recently and someone was talking about the royal wedding and one joked, “I think you Americans are more fascinated by it than us.”

I think she’s right. In England, when one more jaded generation replaces

the last more royally reverent one, more people are recognizing that the jig may be up.

The reason for royalty What reason is there for a monarchy anymore? They don’t run anything.

They don’t do anything except rack up tons of money for being the titular heads of an anachronistic ploy to keep them fat and happy and in Rolls Royces and polo ponies and massive wasteful castles that really belong to the people, not them, forever.

Something bloody well wrong with that picture.

Don’t get me wrong, I love England, been there a bunch of times. One late morning, I was walking in the streets of London when a pigeon on a ledge dropped a spot of doo-doo on my shoe. I walked into a nearby as yet unopened pub and asked the bartender for a napkin to wipe it off.

“Get out, mate,” he snarled. “We’re not open yet.”

I liked that. Felt right at home. If a pigeon pooped on the prince, hordes of his people would’ve descended on it for a royal polishing. And no doubt, greased the pigeon.

So it goes. The next royal wedding will happen, the world will watch transfixed, as if something of great importance and impact is occurring, caught up in the pomp and circumstance of it all, oblivious to the patently pageant-size waste of it all.

My friend, a punker from way back, said Johnny Lydon of The Sex Pistols said it best in “God Save the Queen,” when he shrieked “God save the queen, ‘cause tourists are money, and our figurehead is not what she seems.”

Well, sure she is. The world knows it.

And the royal family is counting their money on it.

Wareham in winter turn on the off-season

Southern New England winter, when the weather is cold and gray and dull. What is there to do?

Luckily for us, the South Coast is filled with things to do if you just look for them. Sure, it may be the off-season, but that does not mean you cannot turn it on! Believe it or not, there are some great deals for this time of year, so take advantage of them before all those tourists come back.

For now, we suggest some deals in bed and breakfast inns, all located right off of Route 6 in Wareham. Pack up the kids in the car—or leave them at home with the grandparents for a romantic escape—to these beautiful, affordable places to stay. Or if you need a little post-holidays alone time, these B&Bs offer sweet solitude.

Fran Murphy, a lady who is 71 years old, runs it all by herself.

“I think people like a bed and breakfast rather than a place like Holiday Inn because it is homey. You get the real interaction of a person, instead of just the desk clerk or room service. Most people who come here I get to know. We become friends. People remember Mulberry as a touch of home,” says Murphy.

Included with the room rates is a full breakfast, afternoon tea and fruit. Mulberry’s famous signature dish is called Elegant Autumn French Toast, and special meals are available as well like low-fat and vegetarian foods.

Attractions around the area include the fun Edaville Railroad next door in Carver, museums, hay and sleigh rides, and nature areas.

The neighborhood hides just off of Route 6, Marion Road, the old highway that lines the South Coast, and it seems most people miss this nice quiet nook because they do not know such a place exists. If you are looking for some time to yourself or with your family, and you are looking for an off-season deal, then this bed and breakfast is for you.

Things to do include the New Bedford Whaling Museum, as well as the local museum, and great restaurants like The Gateway Tavern.

Owner David Albert talked about the off-season at Cranberry Gardens: “We get a lot of people in the off-season visiting relatives for the holidays. Ours is a traditional, homey bed and breakfast, which means we have nice, spacious rooms and a big home cooked breakfast for our guests,” he said. Meg, Albert’s wife, is the one behind the stove cooking the home style meals.

“We treat our guests like a family. Some families when they get away like a bed and breakfast because it is a cozy and comfortable place to stay,” said Albert.

Cranberry Gardens provides this comfortable place in their historic home, built in 1903 with ties to the cranberry business. Inside, there is a parlor with a fire place where guests are invited and offered wine every night of their stay.

Educating

girls a global issue T

here are men with guns and money in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

They bomb things to get our attention, and to promote their own twisted version of Islam. Often, they set up schools and teach young people (mainly boys) to buy into their beliefs, and the young people, whose parents are often illiterate, can’t seek a second opinion about what is meant by the words in the Koran.

Extremist groups such as the Taliban need to keep people ignorant in order to proliferate. This may explain why the big, bad men with guns and money in Afghanistan and Pakistan are busy bombing girls’ schools, and ensuring that women do not get an education. Why would a group of armed men be afraid of schoolgirls?

If the majority of just one generation of girls got an education in these countries, peace might be the norm instead of the exception for these war-torn regions. Extremist groups like the Taliban might disappear completely.

Education a privilege In the United States, school children often complain about getting up in the morning to go to school. But in regions as remote and severe as those in Pakistan and Afghanistan, getting an education is most assuredly still a privilege. Getting a “balanced, non-extremist” education is even more rare.

The Central Asia Institute (www.ikat.org) founded by humanitarian and author Greg Mortensen, who wrote the New York Times bestsellers Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools, has built 131 balanced, non-extremist schools for boys and girls—most of their 58,000 students are girls— in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

And while the lives of the girls are transformed through education—some of them have gone on to college, some have become maternal health care workers—many are still imagining what they want to become. The face of the world is changing.

Educating girls around the world is not just a matter of a country or family’s will, but also of available resources —money, materials, teachers. Even when a school is built and a teacher is hired, in remote regions something as small and necessary as a pencil might be difficult to procure.

Money matters In the western Himalayas—where Central Asia Institute focuses its efforts—money matters, and a little goes a long way. For example, one penny buys one pencil. 15 pennies buys one notebook. $20 is enough to educate a first grader for an entire year. $340 can send a girl to four years of high school on a full-ride scholarship. $600 is one teacher’s annual salary. $5,000 supports an existing school of an entire year. $50,000 is sufficient to build and outfit an eight-room schoolhouse and endow the teachers’ salaries for the first five years.

In realizing how expensive it is not to educate a young girl, how ignorance and violence and poverty thrive under regimes where women are subjugated, pennies seem like the most innocent and easy solution to empower girls to achieve their dreams through education.

Continued from previous page mission, the “Pennies for Peace” program has brought the power of peacemaking into some 4,500 schools around the world. One of these schools is Our Sisters’ School, in New Bedford.

A local connection When the Marion Institute approached Lisa Yates, executive director of Our Sisters’ School, and asked if she would like to be involved in welcoming Greg Mortensen to the Bioneers Conference in New Bedford in October, she answered with a resounding, “yes.”

“Seeing Greg speak was on our wish list. The Board and I had been talking about this for the last three years, but as a start-up school, we weren’t sure how we’d go about getting him here,” she said.

Each year, Our Sisters’ School, a tuition-free independent school for girls that was established in 2008, chooses a charitable cause on which to focus.

The students have a say, and in previous years, they’ve chosen organizations such as the Humane Society.

The decision for 2010, however, was an easy one. The students would raise awareness and funds for Pennies for Peace, and present their check to Greg Mortensen when he arrived in October.

“We have the same mission, the same objectives, as the Central Asia Institute,” explains Yates. “Believing in

girls’ education and how it relates to economic development, and reducing violence….the mission and objectives of the Pennies for Peace program really resonates with us.”

During the daily all-school, morning meetings this fall, Yates and teachers used Pennies for Peace to teach the girls about education in Pakistan and Afghanistan, using the curriculum to start discussion points.

Minds and hearts In an inner city school where family resources are often limited, Yates explained that the girls had tremendous empathy toward their sisters in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“The girls here could easily understand how a family must sacrifice and compromise and work very, very hard,” to send their children to school.

“Every family here has chosen to come to Our Sisters’ School. They are committed to their daughters’ educations,” she says.

The amount raised by Our Sisters’ School was just under $700. Though that may not seem like a lot of money but Yates stressed, “Every penny was an intentional gift.”

The giving did not just extend from

the students, but also from the community. The Chief of Police ran a simultaneous Pennies for Peace campaign and presented the money to Our Sisters’ School. Many of the 100 active volunteers dropped their change in a jar on the way into school, and members of the New Bedford Historical Society gave their spare change to the program. Pennies for Peace news reached a local Crayon Campus, and preschoolers also participated.

The pennies created an invisible bridge between girls oceans apart who seem to have nothing in common, except perhaps their age and gender. Yet one girl’s peace and freedom affects another, as we inhabit the same world.

One girl’s oppression can mean poverty and violence that ripples far beyond the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan, into office buildings in American urban centers, and into families worldwide who send their sons and daughters to fight a war that we are slowly learning, is not so much about violence, territory and hatred, as it is about ignorance.

To put an end to that, a penny seems a very small price indeed.

Resolve to

exercise

in 2011

“Getting more exercise” is at the top of many New Year’s resolution lists. After all, we’re constantly bombarded by information that extols the benefits of regular activity in controlling a host of health conditions. But often we think of “exercise” as just another project to fit into an otherwise busy life.

It turns out, exercise is good for more than just obvious reasons. Yes, it’s helpful in maintaining weight, or helping to shed unwanted pounds. And yes, it does provide a feeling of emotional and physical satisfaction when an hour at the gym is (blessedly) done.

But keep drilling down and you’ll find out that there are huge advantages at the smallest level: in your cells. These advantages include not only controlling weight or building muscle – but also preventing or stemming certain chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer.

No matter what your age or stage in life, there are good reasons to incorporate activity—in even seemingly small steps—into your life.

Resolution 1: I will prevent or control diabetes The American Diabetes Associates reports that more than 1.6 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year. With 90 to 95 percent of those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a good deal of attention is paid to the lifestyle that often leads it.

Often, Type 2 diabetes is the result of a variation on “Ilove-to-eat-and-hate-to-exercise.” The problem is, after a decade or so, your body begins to rebel at the most basic level. Ordinarily, after each tasty (often carbohydrate-heavy) meal, your pancreas release insulin. Insulin allows carbohydrates (as blood glucose) and protein to enter muscle cells where they are stored or used for energy. In Type 2 diabetes, though, insulin is not used properly by the cells, leading to a buildup of glucose. As a result, blood glucose rises abnormally, resulting in a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes…and if left unchecked, can lead to heart disease, circulatory problems, kidney failure, blindness, and nerve disorders.

Exercise helps by decreasing your body’s resistance to using insulin properly. In essence, it helps to open insulin receptors that are like little doors in the cells. Once your body gets used to regular exercise, the cells can better respond to insulin and use glucose the way it was intended: as energy.

Rose Marie Couto, a certified diabetes educator with the

Caritas Diabetes Center at Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, notes that a little activity, combined with a sound nutrition plan that pays careful attention to carbohydrate and fat intake, can pay off big in diabetes prevention or control.

“The good news for patients with diabetes who make activity part of their lives is that they can make great strides toward successfully managing their diabetes,” she says.

“And people who are diagnosed with prediabetes (blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes) can actually reverse this through regular activity and improved diet.”

Couto notes that the American Diabetes Association Normal defines a healthy fasting blood glucose as below 100 mg/dl. A fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl indicates prediabetes, while 126 mg/dl or above indicates diabetes.

How much exercise is enough? “Thirty to sixty minutes a day is a good goal,” says Couto. “Start comfortably— even five to ten minutes a day—and try to increase it slowly.”

Resolution 2: I will preserve or manage my cardiovascular health Is there anyone who does not want a healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels? How about more energy, improved digestion and fat metabolism, increased muscular strength, better bone strength, balance and coordination?

Or, if you need even more concrete reasons you can see, wouldn’t you like to deal better with stress, get a more satisfying night’s sleep, or sharpen your mental alertness?

Exercise physiologist Derek Paiva is fitness and personal training coordinator for the Old Colony YMCA in Stoughton. He also works with patients in Saint Anne’s Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program in Fall River and explains why and how exercise is so beneficial.

“Exercise lowers your resting heart rate and blood pressure by dilating the arteries,” says Paiva, “so your heart doesn’t need to work as hard. At the same time, it increases your HDL (‘healthy’) cholesterol to carry harmful (LDL) cholesterol away from the blood vessels. It also decreases triglycerides, which are linked to coronary artery disease.

And consistent exercise allows the blood vessels to work more efficiently.”

If you’ve already had a heart attack, heart surgery or other cardiac event, supervised exercise in a cardiac rehabilitation program can be one of the most effective prescriptions.

Cardiologist Mark Gabry, of Internal Medicine and Cardiology Associates in Fall River, prescribes cardiac rehab to many of his patients who have had a heart attack, experience angina, or have undergone heart surgery or other procedures. “Exercise makes the heart work more efficiently, so patients can regain strength and prevent their condition from worsening,” explains Dr. Gabry.

“Furthermore, patients who enroll and complete a full Cardiac Rehabilitation program are less likely to have further cardiac events and complications.”

Resolution 3: I will help prevent recurrence of cancer If you or a member of your family has had breast, colon or prostate cancer, you’ll be interested in what Dr. Jennifer Ligibel, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, reported at a recent cancer symposium held by Saint Anne’s in North Dartmouth.

Dr. Ligibel, who is a medical oncologist at Dana-Farber and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, explains that numerous studies, with more than 10,000 women participating, show that cancer survivors who exercise tend to do better and live longer.

While the jury is still out as to why this might be (do these same patients eat better? Are they more compliant in taking their medications? Is it because exercise reduces fat mass and changes metabolism?), there is a “consistent pattern” that points to the “magic” 30 minutes a day, or 150 minutes per week, as having notable benefits.

The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2005 found that women with breast cancer who participated in physical activity equal to walking one or more hours per week had better survival odds than those who exercised less than that or not at all. One study even suggests that breast cancer survivors who exercise have up to 50% less chance of their cancer recurring.

“One of the things I hear most often as patients finish their treatment is

‘What can I do to protect myself now?’” says Dr. Ligibel. “Once they’ve checked with their doctors as to what they can tolerate, they can not only take physical control of their bodies, but also psychological control. During treatment, they may have less nausea and fewer side effects, and beyond, they have a better quality of life and are less tired.”

Locally, Karyl Benoit, a certified fitness and yoga instructor at Swansea Total Fitness, helps cancer patients practice what Dr. Ligibel preaches.

Also a certified cancer exercise specialist, Benoit has taught classes specifically for cancer patients at Saint Anne’s Hospital for more than 15 years to encourage patients’ fitness, flexibility and toning. It’s also a good source of mutual support.

“It is so exciting that medical research is now confirming what many fitness professionals have observed for a long time: A regular dose of moderate exercise can be so important to someone with a cancer diagnosis,” says Benoit.

“During treatment, staying active helps to reduce nausea and fatigue, increase energy level, improve quality of sleep, and is an overall mood enhancer. Exercising in a group also helps eliminate feelings of isolation. And later, after treatment is completed, exercise, along with a healthy diet, is an invaluable tool to help people continue living a healthy lifestyle.”

The bottom line “Thirty to 60 minutes a day—walking, gardening, yard work, swimming, cleaning house—is really helpful for any health improvement,” says Benoit.

“But if you’re not used to it, that’s a goal, not a starting point. It’s most important to find what you like—walking, swimming, dancing—and do it a little bit five days a week. Try five—or ten-minute walks or swims for a week or two, then add another five or ten minutes.”

Or, as Oprah Winfrey said: “Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.”

Spring into Lifelong learning

It’s time for our thoughts to turn to spring…

I mean the spring semester of The Second Half.

With the wide variety of new courses being offered, there is something for everyone.

The spring semester starts a month before the solstice on Feb. 22 in Fall River at 139 Main Street. The registration deadline is Feb 4th.

There’s an Open House on Jan.18 at 1 p.m. at the Westport Public Library.

All 27 course facilitators will be there to give short presentations about their courses, and then to answer questions.

Have you always wanted to play bridge, or are you already a good player? Three courses in bridge are offered. Beginning is taught by Chris Ghilarducci, Salma Jabbour and Joe Cote. Intermediate is taught by Peggy Fellouris, who plays competitively.

Advanced bridge is taught by Al Humphrey, a computer expert.

Learning to play bridge requires learning rules and counting to 13.

However, in these classes the goal is to have fun and enjoy the game while learning.

Express yourself Do you yearn to express yourself?

How about doing it in “Writing from the Heart?” It’s a course taught by experienced writers, Marsha McCabe and Barbara Faria in an informal setting where people write about meaningful events in their lives.

Sharing your writing is optional.

Perhaps your interests are with quiet things, like poetry. “American 18

Poets” will be taught by Barbara Jacobskind, Professor Emeritus at U Mass, Dartmouth. She will explore what makes poetry “American.” Margo Green will host Short Stories: An Ongoing Exploration of the Southern Tradition,” and Elaine Oliveira will coordinate a “Book Club for the Mind and Soul,” a members’ favorite.

Sing a classic “Singing Old Classic Songs” is a newer course, and those who have taken it have talked about the fun they had. The concentration is on old songs, and songbooks are given out.

John Mullaly is retired from teaching at Diman Regional High School, and he leads this group. Steve Brauch will accompany with his guitar.

Find out all you can about “Liberal Religion in New Bedford.” Fred Gifun will discuss with the class the beginnings of religion in Mass, the Quakers, and the Unitarian church.

Fred is a Professor Emeritus of history, and the author of books on U Mass and the First Unitarian Church.

Getting back to a relaxing hobby is always good. “Knitting for Fun” welcomes all levels of knitters, and yarn is available for small projects.

This course is given at the Westport Council on Aging by Gertrude Vigeant.

Bringing art to the community

Visiting the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery at Bristol Community College (BCC) in Fall River is a pleasure on many levels both emotional and intellectual. The school’s architecture is modern and open. It’s surrounded by fields and trees which is unusual on an urban campus. Parking is generous and close to the main gallery doors.

A peaceful sunken sculpture garden with benches leads into a light and airy lobby featuring impressive artworks by former BCC faculty. The lobby opens into the spacious gallery filled with captivating works of art. Frequent visits to the gallery, especially as part of a regular cultural routine, can improve insight, outlook and spirits.

The Grimshaw-Gudewicz is also a

key contributor to the high level of interaction between Bristol Community College and the greater South Coast community. Great community colleges are incubators of cultural consciousness and economic development, and Grimshaw-Gudewicz plays a significant role in nurturing cooperative connections.

In January 2011, the GrimshawGudewicz Art Gallery will celebrate its tenth anniversary of sharing distinctive art with the community by mounting a retrospective exhibition titled, 10 From 10, The Director’s Cut: 10

Gallery Director Kathleen Hancock painstakingly selected one artist from each year of exhibitions so the final group will reflect diverse approaches to art making.

“The gallery’s role has always been to be a forum to present ideas about art and art-making. My approach has always been to use exhibitions as a means to provide opportunities for students and the community to participate in the creative process,” Hancock explained.

“Fall River has many active arts organizations such as the Narrows Center for the Arts and Greater Fall River Arts Association. I’d love for there to be more connections between Fall River and New Bedford arts too, like a South Coast community open studios event,” said Cope, adding: “There is a strong commitment among those of us who went to school here and chose to stay in the region.

We are always working hard and looking for new ideas to keep the arts community growing and thriving.”

BCC art professors embody the idea of community colleges as economic incubators.

“The creative sector is dominated by independent artists, freelancers, and consultants and by microenterprises, and in no other economic sector is entrepreneurial skill more important…

Research shows that art, design, and culture are integral to developing and strengthening an information and technology-based economy,” Rosenfeld said.

Uniting the South Coast The South Coast is a region of diverse neighborhoods. Hancock is enthusiastic in her commitment to uniting South Coast communities through the arts. The gallery has a powerful mission that “supports the educational mission of the college, provides an opportunity for the healthy exchange of ideas, in terms of both in process and product, enriches the environment of the local community and, through its permanent collection, provides an important resource for the cultural heritage of the region,” she stressed, explaining: “We notice two unique audiences for

exhibitions. One is made up of people who come to all the shows and openings. The other consists of friends and family members of artists, people who don’t normally attend art shows. This causes a sort of ripple-in-the-pond effect. Every show is an opportunity to meet new people.” She continues: “We try to create the most ambitious shows we can for the students and community. The BCC campus is so supportive and welcoming.”

The Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery mounts an ambitious six shows a year. During the academic year, the shows are thematic in nature and often an extension of the classroom and college community.

During the summer, the gallery becomes a showcase for the work of regional artists. Hancock is inspired by the power thematic shows have to inspire the community.

“Thematic and narrative shows unite people through ideas. They are tools for thinking. People often say how much the gallery has changed their ideas about art. We are constantly working to find new ways to reach out to the community,” Hancock noted.

Examples of past exhibitions prove Grimshaw-Gudewiczs’ commitment to using art to unite diverse communities. The 9th Annual Azorean Traditional Nativity Exhibit in 2009 explored a compelling tradition in Azorean art and featured a presentation by Roberto Medeiros and a demonstration by figurine artisan, Antonio Morais.

In Fall River as I See It, Hancock worked with Greater Fall River Children’s Museum Director, Jo-Anne Sbrega and others to mount an exhibition of images From The Boys and Girls Club Photography Project.

Fall River teens were given digital cameras to document their everyday lives. Students worked for weeks to develop a portfolio of prints for the exhibition and wrote a narrative to accompany the photographs. They were

empowered by having their pictures seen and voices heard in a public forum.

Grimshaw-Gudewicz exhibits artwork that explores and challenges cultural boundaries and customs. The Women’s Work? exhibition of 2009 explored the cultural identity, gender roles and historic responsibilities of women. In 2007, Tragical, Comical showcased art inspired by literary traditions, and 2007’s Recovered Views featured African American portraits from the early 20th century.

Plans for the next ten years of Grimshaw-Gudewicz exhibitions feature new and inventive ways to reach out to the community and enrich the region through art. Hancock said that she’d like to host a biennial juried regional exhibit, with guest curators and jurors, uniting the various individual South Coast communities in a large exhibition.

An outdoor sculpture show is another possibility. It is clear that the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery will continue to grow and enrich the region for another ten years and beyond, connecting residents to a shared creative heritage while exhibiting fresh and innovative works of art.

t. Anne’s Credit Union of Fall River plans to open its first full-service office in New Bedford. Scheduled to open in February 2011, it will be located at 3057 Acushnet Avenue.

Southcoast Center gets BankFive help

S

outhcoast Hospitals is building a new flagship Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care in Fairhaven that will provide convenient access to advanced cancer services to residents in the eastern part of the South Coast region. Recently, BankFive committed to a donation of $20,000 per year over the next five years to help make the project a reality.

Keith A. Hovan, President of Southcoast Health System and President & CEO of Southcoast Hospitals Group said, “Bank Five’s donation is another example of the strong community support the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care has been receiving.”

“The Southcoast Centers of Cancer Care will save lives and care for patients now and for years to come. BankFive’s generous donation will help Southcoast continue to meet the needs of our community by providing the best care available right here in the South Coast region.”

The estimated cost for both the new Fairhaven and Fall River cancer centers is about $60 million. The Fairhaven building project will create up to 250 temporary construction jobs over the life of the project. The center will employ about 55 staff, of which about 40 will be permanent new clinical and support jobs.

Turn a new leaf

The trouble with New Year’s resolutions is that we’re rarely prepared to follow through after a few weeks of nail-biting, cravings and OCD/bipolar behavior.

Will-power and support groups aren’t enough to help you change a particular behavior/habit (such as smoking, gaining weight, spending too much money), if you don’t already have a better behavior/habit to fill the vacuum. You need to make slow, subtle changes in your life before you can effect a new mindset.

You need to turn over a new leaf in your life—and here are some easy and enjoyable ways you can practice to pave the way for those big changes you want and need to make.

Look at the light side Find the positive or humorous aspect in everything. Even when times

are tough and life circumstances are troubled, there are ways to find the lesson to be learned in everyday events and encounters. Smiling, like yawning, is contagious.

Check it out!

Rush, hurry, run around!! Stop! How often in your frantic days have you thought, “someday I’ll check out that shop or eat lunch at that little café” or “I wish I had time for that concert/exhibit/movie/walk in the park”?

So, make the time! And invite another super-busy person to join you.

If you always find time for only the chores, projects, and other people’s needs, start carving out a portion of that time to read a book, try a new recipe, chat aimlessly on the phone.

Have a pleasurable “reward” activity planned for yourself every day. The chores can wait, believe me.

Grow more plants No matter where you live, surround yourself with greenery. In winter time, force bulbs (e.g., narcissus, amaryllis) to bloom on a windowsill. Scatter hard-to-kill houseplants (try philodendron—they thrive on neglect) throughout your home. You can sprout kitchen herbs on a windowsill in spring, then transplant them outdoors.

Not only do indoor plants add color and life to your surroundings, they also help purify the air you breathe.

And whether you’ve got a big backyard or just an apartment balcony, you can grow tomatoes and salad greens in containers or raised beds.

Learn something new Instead of automatically turning on the news or sports channel (or the DVD player), try out the History, Discovery channel or a cooking show.

Buy a magazine you’ve never read before—and read it.

Go to a local ethnic restaurant instead of McDonald’s or the pizza parlor.

Visit the local library. Sign up for an on-line or adult ed. class in a simple subject you’ve never tried before (e.g. basic home repairs, a foreign language, a new craft/hobby).

Let go of the past Free yourself of all the unused and unnecessary “things” you’ve been hoarding. That out-of-style suit that you’ll never wear (or fit into) again? – give it to Goodwill. Those old lamps?

Long-neglected toys?

Offer them on freecycle.org. If you don’t need them, there are people out there who will be very thankful for them. By the same token, try to let go of old obsessive resentments, grudges, chipped shoulders. Those are what’s keeping you up at night and fueling your need for addictive behaviors.

You can’t change other people – only yourself.

Reach out and touch Everyone, every day. Forward a funny e-mail. Compliment a co-worker. Send a “thinking of you” (snail mail) card to an elderly relative. Hug your kids. Stop in traffic and let a stranger make a left turn. Share yourself with others. The rewards will far outweigh the effort.

10 wine resolutions for 2011

What’s nice about making wine resolutions, is that while you might not get around to doing them all right away, they are all fun to do, don’t cost much—if anything—and doing them all will make you feel a lot better.

1. Try something new One of the first things I do every year is purchase a bottle of wine that I have never tried before. It might be from a country or region of the U.S. that has just appeared in the local wine shops, or one I have read about in a wine magazine that intrigued me.

Sometimes the wine clerk may be knowledgeable enough to recommend to you one of their latest “discoveries.” Be adventurous and you may just discover a unique and pleasant wine to enjoy.

2. Buy reds and wait Second, this is a good time to buy a couple of bottles of that decent red wine that, while you enjoyed it, it 30

seemed a bit too tannic. Put the bottles in your basement (or cellar area) and don’t touch them until next year. If you have several, try them once a year.

The only problem is they usually keep getting better and by that time they are truly great, you have consumed them all. (Okay, so sometimes I buy 5 or 6 and skip a couple years without opening a bottle. Then several years later, I discover the true greatness of a good aged red wine.)

3. Attend free tastings Watch for notices in your local wine shop, and ask them to notify you when they schedule free public wine tastings. Some may even have a web site, or will be willing to put you on their email list. This is an excellent way to

learn about reasonable wines that you might not otherwise buy.

Some have “sit down” tastings with a bit of cheese and crackers and offer 4 to 6 samples with some sort of theme.

Others simply open a couple of bottles and let the customers sip while they shop. Often they may be offering a one-time discount on the very wines you are sampling.

4. Watch for non-profit tastings On a larger scale, there is a trend of non-profit organizations to hold wine tastings as fundraisers. Often there is no theme, only what the organizers are willing to buy, or, if they have good connections, that are donated. These can be quite large and fun social vents, with auctions or raffles to increase the host organization’s fund raising objectives.

This is a great way to combine your support of some worthwhile organization, attend a good social mixer, and enjoy some wine all for a good cause.

(Yeh, I know, it’s hot sweaty work, but somebody has to do it.)

5. Read a good wine book On a much quieter vein, consider buying or checking out of your local library a good wine book on some aspect that is special to you. If you are planning a trip abroad, read up on the wines of the countries that you are visiting so you can make meaningful wine choices when eating out.

You may find that there are wineries and vineyards near where you are traveling. Or, if a visit to a wine region is one of the objectives of your trip, it will be a great help in optimizing your time on the trip and helping you to discover the special “do-not-miss” places.

6. Visit a local winery The South Coast region of New England is blessed with a number of wineries. Visiting a local winery is often a truly rewarding experience.

Somehow, tasting a wine at the site of its birth is special. If you are fortunate, the host may be very knowledgeable about how the wine you taste is made, and the types of grapes used.

Most of the local wineries will be open at least week ends this time of year, but it might be smart to call ahead to check on their hours. Also you can get a brochure at the first winery you visit which will provide more information regarding the others in the area.

7. Introduce a friend Your local winery tour may be the time to introduce a friend to the great adventure of wine appreciation. You could end up finding that being able to share your interest in wine will improve both your and your friend’s wine knowledge. There are many times when it’s better to have two or even four share a bottle of wine on a picnic or at a BYOB restaurant.

8. Find and frequent a BYOB While there are not a whole lot of BYOB (bring your own beverage) restaurants in the area, there are several and they are all really worthwhile not just because of the privilege of

bringing your own wine, but most offer excellent foods from a wine friendly menu.

Finding a good BYOB restaurant in your area is not always easy. Using “google” brings up a lot, but some may be rather distant. But be sure to not limit the area too greatly when you do your search, for it may only be an extra mile to that really great place you might miss out on.

9. Join a wine group There are some local wine groups in the area. These consist of individual and couples who meet monthly or “semi-occasionally” to taste wines, usually with a theme such as California Cabernet Sauvignon, or German White wines.

The groups often meet in members’ homes, or at a BYOB place and share the wines they bring. Most are private, but some are affiliated with national organizations. One of the most successful and the largest non-profitable wine organization is the American Wine Society. (www.americanwinesociety.org)

10. Attend a wine expo Finally, take the opportunity to attend some major wine convention, show case or Expo. We are indeed fortunate to be close to the 20th Annual Boston Wine Expo, which is scheduled for January 22 and 23.

Details about the Expo can be found on their website and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.wineexpoboston.com. This is a chance of a lifetime, as they will have dozens of wine producers, importers and international association members offering sample tastings as well as literature.

So there you have it. So for 2011, here are ten resolutions that will help you move along in your love, appreciation and knowledge of wine. Wine can become a life long hobby and in moderation, can enhance your joy and love of life.

Looking forward 2011

As we close out a year that many would rather forget, we can honestly say that things are looking up as we head into 2011. After all, things couldn’t have gotten much worse.

First, the numbers We opened 2010 with a regional unemployment rate of 11%. Our flagship cities of Fall River and New Bedford were both close to 15%. As we enter 2011, the numbers point to a recovery.

The regional unemployment rate has dropped below 10% while the cities are both below 13%. Overall employment is up by 4000 workers.

Traffic counts are a fairly reliable indicator of economic activity. When times are bad, there are fewer commuters, fewer vacationers, and fewer shoppers. People travel more when the economy is good. The situation as we head into 2011 is marginally improved.

Over one year, traffic counts on 34

I-195 in Fairhaven and Route 140 in Freetown grew by slightly less than 1% at each location, but increased by a whopping 2.6% on I-195 in Fall River.

So at least we are headed in the right direction—albeit slowly (kind of a metaphor for the economic recovery in general).

SEED Corporation, our region’s premier small business lender, reports that their loan volume in the small business category saw an uptick in 2010, and they are projecting increasing demand for all of their loans in 2011.

There was a slight uptick in building permits issued through the first nine months of 2010 when compared to

the same period a year earlier. While the numbers are still below their peaks earlier in the decade, 2010 saw a 5% increase in the number of single family homes planned in the region.

Next, bridging the future When driving the region’s highways and byways, you will begin to notice big changes in 2011. The Braga Bridge’s transformation from a faded rusting green hulk into a sparkling blue structure should be completed this year.

Some structural work will continue into 2012. I can’t wait for that eyesore to be improved.

More significantly, the new Brightman Street Bridge (to be officially known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge) will actually be partially opened next spring. According to Mass DOT in Taunton, it will initially only carry traffic in one direction, and we’ll have to wait until 2012 to cross both ways, but it is progress. As they say, half a loaf is better than none.

Peace be with you

By Michael J. Vieira Each year since 1968, a World Day of Peace has been celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church on January 1. After the gluttony of Thanksgiving, the excess of Christmas, and the silliness of New Year’s Eve, that seems like a good day to pause and reflect (even though the 12 days of Christmas continue the season into January).

January’s cold and snow encourage a slowing down of life. It’s easy to cuddle and cocoon for a while, so it seems like a good time to think peaceful thoughts —at least for those of us who are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads and who can afford to pay the heating bills.

Days of peace But you could also celebrate International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, on September 21.

The United Nations set aside that day in 1981 as a day dedicated to peace or specifically the absence of war.

They even inaugurated the day with the ringing of the “Peace Bell,” which, according to Wikipedia, is cast from coins donated by children from all continents. It would have been nice if a few governments had kicked in a few bucks from their military budgets, but so much for that. At least the kids get it.

And you could also celebrate November 17 as World Peace Day, which was started by Don Morris around 1997. According to their website it’s a day that “encourages us to be kind to others and teach others to be peaceful.”

So, the calendar provides at least three opportunities to think about peace— yet for many, all the word brings are images of Sixties dudes and dudettes waving peace signs and wearing 40

funny clothes. Well, guess what. Some of that groovy clothing is now back in style—and guys in suits (like me) are wearing Jerry Garcia ties.

Back to the future Hmmm… can you say, “flashback.”

Like 40 years ago, we’ve got wars that most agree need to end. You can even revisit Country Joe and the Fish and with very little editing sing, “Well it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for? Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn— next stop’s Afghanistan.”

At least this time, we’re not treating our returning military as the enemy —but then again, we’re still not always providing the care and support they need and deserve either. We’ll name our new bridge “Veterans’ Memorial” but a long overdue span doesn’t do much to ease the pain of the families of fallen heroes—and the South Coast has suffered too much loss already.

Think the civil rights era is over? Look to many of our cities for a lesson in segregation—or better yet, reflect on the “Don’t ask—don’t tell” debates. It seems like the same arguments made against minorities a few decades ago were recycled and only slightly revised.

Thankfully, good sense prevailed in the often common sense-challenged Capitol.

Just behave As John Lennon sang, “All we are saying is give peace a chance.”

Although we can’t control world politics and events, we can make a difference in our daily lives. As somebody said, we can disagree without being disagreeable.

One of the “lowlights” of the election season was when a candidate for governor in Rhode Island told the

President of the United States to “shove it.” Not that Barack Obama should be surprised by being disrespected— members of our esteemed Congress made faces, shook their heads and shouted comments during his State of the Union speech—so much for providing leadership and civility.

Recently, a student went into a school office waving his cell phone and telling people that his mother wanted to talk to somebody. When they were told that the administrators were busy, the mother told the kid to put her on speaker phone.

She then began an “F-bomb” peppered tirade that echoed off the walls of the school until somebody interrupted a vice principal who took the call. The boy, hopefully out of embarrassment but probably out of a desire to continue being obnoxious outside, left the phone and the office—so much for self-respect or respect for education.

Even in places like colleges (where I work), there are requests to have discussions about civility. Students, parents, and even some faculty and staff don’t understand the difference between what is acceptable at home, in a bar, or on the street and what is expected in a school, in a classroom, or at a meeting. That’s just sad.

So, as Elvis Costello said in the song he made popular in the Seventies, “What’s so funny ‘bout peace, love, and understanding?”

Want to make a difference this year?

Calm down. Don’t think it’s all about you. Wait your turn. Don’t shout or swear in public. Let somebody cross the street or merge in traffic. Show some respect. And as the church song says, “let peace begin with me”—or as your mother hopefully said, “Just behave.”

Brrrrrr.......Winter is here!! The winter season is upon us and snow is on its way in South Coast New England.

Here at the “Inn” at Clifton we deal with the challenges brought on by severe winter weather.

We do all of the shoveling. We clean off the frozen windows of your car. Your mail and newspapers are delivered inside. We face the bitter cold outside…while our residents can sit around the fireplaces in the Dining Room, the Parlor and the Library. With family, good friends, a cup of Hot Cider, Cocoa or Coffee, they can capture the special cozy, warm feeling that is unique to the traditional inns of New England.
