Getting Down & Dirty with Land Stewardship

How is the future of Land Stewardship ensured at the Coastal Land Trust?

The Coastal Land Trust has a special fund that is dedicated to Land Stewardship; its principal is invested and its income is applied to the cost of Basic Land Stewardship Activities. We estimate that, given the amount of land in our portfolio and the growth ahead, we should add approximately $2M to this fund over the next year or so.

Land Stewardship IS the future of the Coastal Land Trust! If you’d like to know more about how you can participate in building this fund, please give us a call! 910-792-4524 x210.

Not so very long ago, the Coastal Land Trust owned just half a dozen pieces of land and a few conservation easements. We didn’t have any staff scientists to monitor the land or help mark boundaries, so we’d ask a volunteer biologist to help with these basic stewardship tasks. Back in the days before hand-held GPS or smart phones, they would use a survey map and a compass when they headed out to the field. We called these conservation activities “Land Stewardship.”

Today, virtually everything about Land Stewardship has changed! The Coastal Land Trust now owns 34 preserves covering 9,732 acres, holds 130 conservation easements over another 35,983 acres, and monitors another

6,083 acres of lands that have been transferred to other agencies.

We now have four full-time biologists on staff, a pick-up truck and a shed full of equipment. The “tools of the trade” our Stewardship staff take with them when heading out to the field (or woods, beaches, farms and swamplands) include iPads equipped with GPS positioning software, chain saws to clear brush for trail-building, neon paint for boundary marking, longleaf pine seedlings or bags of oyster shells for habitat restoration, mobile phones to share pictures and live videos on Facebook, and the cell number of the closest law enforcement officer in case they find illegal activities!

What is Land Stewardship?

“Land Stewardship” as an idea, however, hasn’t changed! It still encompasses all the conservation activities that protect—or even improve—the conservation resources of a property after the deal is sealed.

Basic Land Stewardship Tasks include: marking boundaries and installing gates; annual monitoring of all lands and conservation easements; talking with landowners about their future plans; record-keeping; learning about and responding to external threats or changes to the land (e.g., condemnation); and

The Coastal Land Trust is thrilled to welcome Lena O’neal as the new Springer’s Point Preserve Steward! Lena, an Ocracoke native, has spent her life exploring Springer’s Point and its treasures. She has fond memories of walking through Springer’s Point with her grandfather as a little girl. After all, Springer’s Point is literally in Lena’s backyard, a perfect vantage point for her childhood playground and to watch over the Preserve.

Lena is no stranger to introducing others to the ecological and cultural significance of Springer’s Point. As a program specialist at Ocracoke’s campus of the north Carolina Center for the Advancement of

Teaching (nCCAT), Lena has had the opportunity to share Springer’s Point Preserve with numerous groups of north Carolina school teachers. She has also repeatedly volunteered to help the Coastal Land Trust in planting native marsh grasses as a part of the living shoreline project at the Preserve.

After attending UnC-Wilmington, Lena worked at UnC-Wilmington’s Office of Transition Programs. She returned to Ocracoke in 2006 where she lives with her husband, Mark, and children, Maren and Paxton.

Emily will obtain her master’s degree in Environmental Studies with concentrations in Coastal Management and Marine and Coastal Education in May 2018, from the University of north Carolina Wilmington. She completed her bachelor of science in Marine Biology from UnC Wilmington, as well. During her six years of living in Wilmington, she has become increasingly aware of our coastal issues and wants to contribute to their mitigation. Emily is working with the Stewardship Department to draft management plans and monitoring reports after conducting site visits. She is willing to work on a variety projects and tasks to gain as much experience

B ill raney, one of the founders and past presidents of the Coastal Land Trust, is one of several attorneys who has always made himself available for legal advice when we’ve had questions. But this past year, he signed on for much more: volunteering to represent us when a lawsuit was brought requesting a right-of-way over land which was subject to a conservation easement held by the Coastal Land Trust.

The Coastal Land Trust was only brought into the lawsuit because any new right-of-way granted must comply with the terms of the conservation easement. Still, being a “party” to any lawsuit raises the possibility of thousands of dollars in legal fees. In fact, Bill donated more than 70 hours of his legal time on this case in 2017.

In December 2017, with the case still not resolved and Bill’s retirement pending, Bill helped us recruit a new volunteer attorney. We are sincerely grateful to Bill’s representation of the Coastal Land Trust in this case.

Coastal Land Trust

Receives

Time, Talent and Treasure

You may have heard of “The Three T’s: Time, Talent, and Treasure,” referring to the gifts that individuals bring to nonprofit organizations or communities of faith. Over the last year or so, the Coastal Land Trust has benefitted from expertise given generously by Bill raney and royster Hedgepeth.

royster Hedgepeth only recently “retired” to Wilmington, but he has already had a dramatic positive impact on the Coastal Land Trust’s fundraising program. royster is a veteran leader of successful multi-million dollar capital fundraising campaigns for public universities and private communities of faith.

Since moving here, royster has learned to care deeply about the north Carolina coast, and has become one of our most active volunteers. He has brought the full measure of his decades of executive level fundraising experience to the Coastal Land Trust. royster’s approach, a donor-centered philosophy, fits well with our organization. royster meets weekly with staff, and bimonthly with volunteers and Board members. He is teaching and inspiring all of us about how to plan and execute a truly bold, ambitious fundraising plan for the north Carolina coast.

We are very grateful for the contributions of these two leaders in their respective fields of law and philanthropy.

Weyerhaeuser Grant to Reprint Forest Guide

In 2016, Coastal Land Trust created our Find It in The Forest guide to provide children of all ages with a take-home educational tool that allows them to explore and evaluate longleaf forests (with generous support from Duke Progress Energy Foundation). This educational guide has a checklist, photographs and descriptions of things you would find in healthy longleaf forests that encourages the user to pay close attention to their surrounding while exploring the outdoors.

Because of high demand, our supply from the first print of these guides was all but gone by the end of 2016. The guides were used at many of the Coastal Land Trust’s outdoor events like the fall Show Me Day at our Everett Creek Preserve and by partners such as the Boy Scouts and Camp Albemarle. In 2017, with funding from nC State University, Find It in The Forest guide was in its second print and being used for environmental education programs by the Coastal Land Trust and by partner organizations as far as the piedmont region of the state.

Most recently, the Coastal Land Trust received a $2,000 grant for the third reprint

of Find It in The Forest from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund, and the guide will be headed to new host sites for our environmental program. Jade Woll, the Coastal Land Trust’s current AmeriCorps Service Member, will be working with Queen’s Creek Elementary and Bogue Sound Elementary this spring. She will be implementing our Longleaf Pine Curriculum in the classroom, and the Find it in the Forest guide during a guided hike at our Gales Creek Preserve.

Studies have shown the powerful benefits youth receive from Environmental Education. According to Dr. nicole Ardoin of Stanford University, there have been over 100 studies that have found that Environmental Education provides transforming learning opportunities to youth, which results in engagement in the world around them in a meaningful way.

The Find it in the Forest guide allows students to become engaged in their

surrounding environment, by providing a fun and accessible educational medium.

The Find it in the Forest guide is a small, but mighty solution, to meet the greater need for environmental education along the north Carolina Coast.

conservation easement enforcement and defense, if needed.

Strategic or “Extra” Land Stewardship Tasks include: ecological monitoring; invasive species removal; habitat enhancement and restoration (everything from pollinator gardens, to marsh grass plantings, to prescribed burns); installing, building and maintaining site improvements that facilitate public use or access to preserves (trails, boardwalks,

signage, etc.) and engaging community members to participate in events on the land.

What would happen if Land Stewardship activities stopped?

Many preserves would be at risk for trespass, unlawful timbering, and poaching of game species such as deer, or native plants such as Venus flytraps. Others, like Springer’s Point, would have to be closed to the public if we couldn’t afford to keep them clean and safe.

Perhaps most important, if we failed to monitor conservation easements and a violation of the agreement occurred without us catching it, our future legal rights and remedies could be compromised and weakened.

We are so proud of our Stewardship Staff and we could nOT protect the lands we do without their dedication to the land – rain or shine, cold or hot, near or far. They do it all, and we are so grateful that the lands we protect are also cared for!

special to Lena, who says, “I was fortunate to have grown up with parents and grandparents who kicked me out of the house to play outside on a regular basis. I was fortunate that they valued time spent in nature and the lessons learned from the freedom to wander and

explore. Being connected to your environment and passing that love and appreciation on to your children is a priority.”

How true. Springer’s Point is special, and we are excited to have Lena watching over this treasure for all of us!

NATURE TRIVIA

As winter finally thaws, many animals in North Carolina will be emerging from hiber nation, a state of inactivity for a period of time. During hibernation, an animal’s body temperature lowers and its breathing

and heart rate slows down. A few animals actually produce a type of natural antifreeze that helps preserve vital organs. Which of the following species is known to have this biochemical ingenuity:

It’s a Family (and Forest!) Affair

S

“This is a place where my kids can come out and hunt and enjoy the land. They also have some long-term financial security through a working forest. This is important to me,” said Stephen.

tephen Owens is creating a land legacy for his children. Building on long-held family-owned land, Stephen, along with his brother, Harry, sister, Joy Usher, and Uncles Sam and Whren Williams, have amassed over 3,000 acres of forest along almost six miles of the northeast Cape Fear river north of Crooms Bridge road in Pender County. The land hosts vast bottomland hardwood and pine forests and is managed for wildlife and timber income.Conservation also fits in with Stephen’s and his family’s economic and land use objectives. In 2013, they sold a landowner agreement (also known as a conservation easement) at a significant bargain sale to the Coastal Land Trust on over 2,300 acres. In 2015, they worked with the Coastal Land Trust to acquire and protect another 1,000+acres of contiguous land. And on December 19, 2017, the Owens Family, LLC sold a conservation agreement to the Coastal Land Trust on another 282+acres along the river.

Funding for this recent Coastal Land Trust easement purchase came from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service north American Wetlands Conservation grant. “Together, we have permanently protected a forested buffer along a huge section of the northeast Cape Fear river and linked wildlife habitat from the river to over 24,000 acres of the state-owned Angola Bay Game Lands. The Owens Tract represented a hole in a long conservation corridor up above Crooms Bridge road in Pender County to the Duplin County state line,” stated Janice Allen, Deputy Director of the Coastal Land Trust. “We especially thank Mr. Owens for his perseverance on the December 2017 closing, which to us, represents one of the last pieces of the puzzle!”
