I am Proud to Be Part of a Community that Goes Above and Beyond A Conversation with Tammy Patrick, Director of Advancement 1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I joined Coastal Hospice as Director of Advancement in January, 2020. My responsibilities include designing and implementing effective fundraising programs, donor recognition, and relations, as well as, overseeing the Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop. I work closely with Monica Escalante, President of Coastal Hospice and our Communications Department, making sure that our philanthropic efforts are coordinated and support every department’s needs. I have had the good fortune of working in the nonprofit sector, most recently as Development Officer for the Atlantic General Hospital Foundation, implementing

campaigns that were both fruitful and rewarding on a personal level. I have always enjoyed working with people and earlier in my career I was a restaurant and business owner. I studied accounting at Salisbury University and live in Berlin, Maryland with my sons, Connor and Carson who graduated from Worcester Preparatory School and are pursuing their education and careers. I am very involved in the wellness of our communities and enjoy supporting many local nonprofits. 2. What compelled you to join Coastal Hospice and what do you love most about your job? Hospice has always been near and dear to my heart. As with most everyone I know, several of my family members and friends have been supported by hospice throughout my life. When I was given the opportunity to join Coastal Hospice, it filled my heart that I would be able to assist in giving back for all of the lives that had been able to LIVE during their last months and days. What I love most about my job is what I have learned about Hospice care since I have been here. This is NOT a last resort – Coastal Hospice allows you to extend your life comfortably, while preparing your friends and family in understanding and coping with the end of life. It has given me the desire to educate the community in NOT fearing the word “HOSPICE”. The earlier you choose to educate yourself and your family with the care that we offer — the better your end of life experience.

After facing yet another year full of challenges, it seems that our common theme both within Coastal Hospice and the community we serve, is adaptation. The resilience and ability our staff has to keep thinking forward is nothing short of amazing. It is because of this adaptability that we continue to provide the level of care we do and I could not be prouder!
I am also delighted by the way our community has responded to every initiative and campaign we have launched. The support from all of you is tangible and we have seen it reflected in our Be an Angel campaign, that this year broke all records, raising $271,413 that will directly benefit the care we offer to our patients and their families. The work that our volunteers continue to do is outstanding. During Hospice Month last November, we had a heartwarming parade for our staff. It was thanks to partners in the community that we were able to celebrate our Hospice Heroes (see page 7). The Holiday Run was a blast and a perfect example of our community’s response to our call. I am grateful to be part of this wonderful community. As I said in my open line, this year is coming full of possibilities. We are working hard to keep a sense of normalcy and bring back — with all the safety guidelines in place — the programs that our communities need. Our Bereavement and Counseling Care Departments are thrilled to be able to offer Support Groups in-person starting this month (see page 5), as well as the awaited Camp Safe Harbor (see page 5). We are grateful that Salisbury University will host once again this wonderful fun healing camp for children who have recently lost a loved one. Another exciting expansion is the launching of our Caregiver Academy. This important initiative responds to the need for in-depth knowledge on End-of-Life Care topics for healthcare professionals as well as caregivers of patients in the community. So far, the response from our partners in the healthcare industry and caregivers in the community has been very positive and encouraging. You can read more about this leading-edge program on page 9. Finally, as the warmer months are near, our Advancement Department and committee is hard at work putting together our fundraising event, Taste of Finer Things. This year we have an outstanding line-up of sponsors and it is looking to be the event of the season! Run to pages 11 and 12 for more details! As you can see, the year is infusing new energy to us all at Coastal Hospice, filling the air with hope and lots of change. As green colors our lawns and our gardens burst in colorful flowers, I hope you take the time to step outside and enjoy the outdoors. We have another opportunity to marvel in the beauty of the season, and the miracle that nature allows us to witness every Spring: Rebirth and Possibility. In gratitude,
Monica

3. What are you particularly proud from the time you’ve been at Coastal Hospice? I am proud to be part of a community that goes above and beyond. I truly believe that we have the most generous friends and family among us — this isn’t my achievement — this is our community achievement. I am grateful to everyone for coming together and supporting this amazing organization, as well as, all of the amazing organizations within our community. Despite COVID, we continue to be able to promote dignity and quality of life for patients and families who face life-limiting conditions, regardless of the ability to pay. In 2020-2021, I was ecstatic that our community donated with their heart while we raised over $175,000 for the Be An Angel appeal, exceeding all previous years. Then, we expanded our reach in 2021-2022 with our Christmas tree locations in all 4 counties – This year, trees were displayed at: WMDT Morning News, Atlantic Hotel — Berlin. Coastal Hospice Thrift Shop, Crisfield Elks Lodge #1044 Crisfield American Legion Post #16, Hurlock Town Hall, Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay, Ocean Downs Casino, Pohanka Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Several volunteers, staff, businesses and employees assisted in decorating and hanging ornaments throughout the counties, A TRUE TEAM EFFORT. We exceeded our goals again this year and raised over $271,000 for our patients and families! Let’s not forget that without the amazing care and commitment (specifically, during this pandemic) of the Coastal Hospice Staff — it would be nearly impossible to
raise these funds! I could not be more proud to be a part of this organization and community. THANK YOU for ALL YOU DO! 4. What are you looking forward to in 2022? I began my journey with Coastal Hospice on the year of the 40th Anniversary. We planned a series of events, Taste of Finer Things, Blues on the Bay, formed a committee, and began planning a 40th Anniversary Gala. When Covid-19 hit, little by little we started postponing events, then canceling. By September 2021 we were able to hold our first event again with Blues on the Bay. Macky & Pam have hosted this event for more than 10 years benefiting Macky & Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice. With their help, we were able to raise over $57,000. They are a true blessing to Coastal Hospice. On May 11, 2022, we will be able to bring back Taste of Finer Things for the first time since 2019. Gayle Widdowson, Committee Chair and the whole committee are so excited for this year’s event. We have been working for several months and can assure you that this will be an affair to remember! We hope you join us in this celebration at the Ocean Downs Casino, 6 – 9 pm. This is our largest annual event which allows our guests a chance to sample wine and food pairings from some of the best restaurants that the Ocean City area has to offer, as well as, open bar, live entertainment and dancing by the “On the Edge” band, free play and more. Hope you can join us! You can read more about this event on pages 11 and 12.

Volunteer Viewpoint Meet our Volunteer Kerry Burns!
One time, after getting a few groceries we went to self-checkout where the patient would scan each item, place them in the bag, and then carry the bag to the car. I repeated over and over to the Kerry Burns patient “it’s ok, take your Volunteer time, no one here knows how long we’ve been here”. Seeing the sense of accomplishment on the patient’s face after completing a task was worth the time spent. The patient was elated as her family and friends had begun finishing tasks for her as they only had so much time.
Volunteer Coordinator Stephanie McClellan sat down with our volunteer Kerry Burns. Let’s get to know her!
S:
How long have you been a volunteer for Coastal Hospice?
K:
I have been a Coastal Hospice volunteer for five years this coming April.
S: K:
What made you want to volunteer to begin with?
S: K:
What is your favorite thing about volunteering?
S:
Can you share a story with us about a memorable time you had volunteering with Coastal Hospice?
K:
My most memorable time volunteering with Coastal Hospice was with a Compass client who became a Hospice patient and I was able to follow her through both services. This particular patient was young and had early onset dementia and Alzheimer’s. I would assist this patient with completing tasks and transport her to the grocery store to pick up items. This disease had affected this patients hand coordination as well as her memory.
I was at a point where I wanted to volunteer more and was looking for something to fill my time. I considered Hospice a positive, worthwhile cause/opportunity and wanted a “heartwarming” experience.
My favorite thing is making a difference in someone’s day. I may only visit a patient one time, but that one time can make all the difference.
S:
What would you tell others to encourage them to volunteer?
K:
Hospice is a great program where you can make someone’s day a little better. The sense of accomplishment you get doing something positive gives you a better perspective on life. At Coastal Hospice, we are grateful for Kerry Burns and our group of volunteers, who every day share their time and gifts with patients and families, as well as the rest of the organization. If you are interested in becoming a Coastal Hospice Volunteer, please visit: www.coastalhospice.org/volunteer or call: 410-742-8732
Smiles and Joy this Holiday Season! We are grateful for the kindness and generosity of our volunteers and members of our staff, who lined up in December to bring joy and cheer, delivering poinsettias to all our patients. Our elves visited homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, Coastal Hospice at the Lake, and Macky and Pam Stansell house, driving throughout Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties — making the Coastal Hospice’s Annual Holiday Run a beautiful and meaningful event for all.

Honor a Veteran By Stephen Farrow The program's simplicity doesn't begin to describe the richness of the experience that occurs when you spend time with someone who has served our country in the armed forces and is now likely nearing the end of their life. The appreciation that the veterans have for the recognition of their service is profoundly moving, as is the appreciation that family members have seeing their husband, wife, parent or grandparent recognized.
A
s a volunteer participating in the We Honor Veterans program at Coastal Hospice for several years, it is hard to overstate the inspiration and satisfaction I've gained from honoring our hospice veterans. This program is simple and straightforward. It consists of conducting a brief visit with our veterans, most often in their home. We present them with a certificate of appreciation for their service and provide them a blanket or quilt, many of them handmade by volunteers.
The stories the veterans tell of their service time and often their life stories are wonderful. I’ve spent time with a 99-year-old World War II veteran, who was approaching his 100th birthday on December 25th. Appropriately his name was Noel. I was fortunate to have spent time with a couple who had been married for 78 years and were clearly just as devoted to each other as they had been 78 years ago. Another special time was spent with a 95-year-old veteran who had gotten past the point of filtering his thoughts and asked me how long the sun had been reflecting off my bald head! His wife was mortified, but I could only laugh. I've squeezed the hands of veterans when that was the only way they could communicate and both of us had tears.
The We Honor Veterans program at Coastal Hospice is a tremendous opportunity to give much appreciated recognition and gain enormous satisfaction doing it.
Steve
Stephen R. Farrow is a Coastal Hospice Volunteer and Coastal Hospice Board of Directors Immediate Past Chair. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for 21 years.
Help Us Honor Veterans We are always seeking the participation of military veterans for our We Honor Veterans ceremonies. Journey Connections
Supporting You Through Difficult Moments By Alvin Harmon
G
rowing up, I spent hours gazing at the beauty of the Choptank River, walking the tree lines in Head of the Creek, standing on the pier at Public Landing or swimming in the waters of Raccoon Point. Just like many of you, Delmarva has always been my home. My educational background includes an Associates of the Arts (AA) in Biblical Studies from Liberty University (Go Flames!), a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with the College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy and a focus on Bioethics with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. Most recently, I obtained my certification as an End-of-Life Doula, through the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance, which has created an even
greater opportunity to provide interpersonal support, where and when you need it most. You can read more about End-of-Life Doula below. Outside of the office, I am still committed to community. I volunteer yearly to support cold weather/homeless shelters, as well as various youth groups and service organizations across our region. When we suffer grief/loss of any kind, it is common to understand or sense that our lives may be collapsing. Supporting you through these difficult moments is my principal passion. As the Bereavement Care Services Manager at Coastal Hospice, I want you know that “Care” is not only at the center of my title, but it is at the center of my dedication to each of your bereavement concerns. “Care” is at the core of the commitment that Coastal Hospice has made to support the entire community we serve.
Alvin What is an End-of-Life Doula?
B
arbara Karnes, RN is an End of Life Educator, Award Winning Nurse, hospice pioneer, whose realizations about the stages of dying led her to write Gone from My Sight, "The Little Blue Book" that changed the hospice industry. She shares on the National End-Of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) website that for the End-ofLife Doula, “care is to support, guide, nurture and be a presence during the months, days, and hours before death.” Doulas provide non-medical and holistic comfort to a dying person and their family. They promote empowerment for the individual and are a beacon of comfort. The primary role of the End-of-Life Doula is to be a consistent, calming, nurturing influence and presence. An emotional support which shares information and education as needed. This role, as it relates hospice, is to reinforce the care that Coastal Hospice professionals are offering and suggesting to patients and families. This role serves as additional support for families, as another hand to hold, and as a person to help you honor your loved one. To learn more about End-of-Life Doulas, feel free to contact Alvin Harmon, Bereavement Care Services Manager at 410-742-8732 ext. 440, or visit the National End-Of-Life Doula Alliance website at www.nedalliance.org.

If The Trees Can Keep Dancing, So Can I
Remembering Our Parents
by Kwame Alexander
Grief during Mother’s Day and Father’s Day often produces complex emotions. Although the primary focus of grief during these annual observances is on the loss of mothers and fathers around the world, we must also be sensitive to the parents who will no longer be celebrated as a mother or father by their children, due to a pregnancy loss or loss of an only child.
W
hat I'm learning about grief, is that it can come like a whisper or storm through loud as thunder it leaves a hollow, to be filled with a new planting. And, when you wake for another day that feels oddly the same as the last, It crawls right back into your lap. What I'm learning about grief Is that it is a language. Suffering is its own speech it will not go away just because you won't look it in the eye He rides shotgun when you go by old familiar places Eventually, you will get closer and he will say "See, it's not so bad. I got your back." This pandemic, this tragedy, this fulcrum of life is a shovel unearthing secrets we wish would stay buried I learn that I am ashamed I love solitude. Hard times call for soft people. There is softness in stillness, in staying home, in distractions deleted, in a togetherness that stretches great distances. What I'm learning about grief I learned a long time ago. Knead grief, as you would bread. Weave grief, as you would thread. there is no vaccine against it — we can't develop antibodies against it, it is something I have and something you have — but in these times it is something we have It is anger and denial It is chaotic laughter from splintered memories It is jagged cries and single tears It is numb and indifferent It is the pinprick of light, promising A slow semblance of normality returned. © 2022 Kwame Alexander for NPR’s Morning Edition Printed with permission of www.npr.org.
by Alvin Harmon
Mother’s Day can be agonizing for someone who has had a miscarriage or experienced the death of an only child, and it’s reasonable to accept that. Both parents may mourn for the dreams and plans they had for that child. Specialized grief support groups can help in that process. In actuality, these types of losses are permanent. We must find ways to understand this reality and develop coping mechanisms to manage that permanency. What this implies is that the loss will forever be an aspect of your life. Depending upon when the loss occurred, levels of hurt can vary in intensity. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed grief, just as it has changed so many other facets of life across the globe. This means that people have been unable to comfort one another in person. Many people were never permitted to have funerals for their loved ones, creating missed opportunities to experience a sense of culture, a sense of closure, to share valuable memories, or to simply feel the healing touch of a hand and embrace. You don’t have to be alone. Even if your friends and loved ones are not meeting in person, we can get together through social media outlets or videoconferencing to share memories of our parents during these observances. Writing a letter to a deceased family member is not a new concept. It may prove helpful to pen a letter to your mother or father telling those things only a child would tell them, as if they were there. Maybe, you didn’t have the relationship with your parents that you wanted, Mother’s and Father’s Day may draw your focus to that unrealized relationship. Grieving persons may not always be looking for us to fix their grief, but as friends and family we can often best support by listening. This, at the very least, gives space for the bereaved to remember. A parent can often be “kept alive” by simply connecting to memories. If you are interested in learning about our support groups, please visit www.coastalhospice.org/grief-support or call 410-742-8732.

Provider & Community Relations By Lauren Blair
T
he close of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 has been an exciting time in the Provider & Community Relations Department!
November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, a time to raise awareness about hospice and palliative care while celebrating the amazing staff who work tirelessly to care for and support patients who face lifelimiting conditions and their loved ones. To celebrate our staff and their amazing work all year long, we hosted a THANKSgiving Car Parade on November 18, 2021. Many local agencies participated in the parade, including Senator Mary Beth Carozza, Apple Discount Drug, BrightStar Home Care, Home Instead, Atlantic Portable X-Ray, the Ocean Pines Police and Fire Departments, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Kind SBY, and Pizza Tugos — who generously provided lunch for our staff to show their appreciation. Senator Mary Beth Carroza and Commissioner Chip Bertino delivered proclamations to our President, Monica Escalante, in honor of this special month. December brought us a busy holiday season. The Holiday Food Drive was our way of supporting our patients and their loved ones during this special time of year. Our social workers and nurses identified seven families who needed some help during the holiday season. The baskets were overflowing and customized to each individual patient and family to accommodate for special requests including easy-to-make items, restaurant gift cards, and the most requested item from our patients, SWEETS! The Food Drive inspired our department to create a Coastal Hospice Food Pantry, so that at any time, our staff can grab what is needed for patients. More on the Food Pantry to come! January 2022 was the start of a fresh New Year and to celebrate, we delivered New Years’ gift baskets to all of our providers — physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health care agencies — across the four counties we serve. The baskets were filled with our beautiful 2022 calendars, brochures, newsletters, pens, and custom made chocolate crabs from “On What Grounds?” Coffee Shop in Berlin, Maryland (featuring my favorite — the white chocolate crab dusted with Old Bay!). As we prepare to spring into a new season, the Provider & Community Relations Department continues to seek out ways to be involved in our community while providing education, support, and information about Coastal Hospice services. We are always looking for opportunities to speak to any group — no matter the size — whether in person or virtually. Please feel free to reach out for more information! Until next time,
Lauren

Meet our New Director of Hospice Inpatient Facilities
M
y name is Joshua Davis, but you can call me Josh. I was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware where I took my first healthcare job at the age of 16 at a local physician’s office. Since then, I have accumulated 16 years of healthcare experience. I graduated with my associates in nursing at Delaware Technical Community College, obtained my bachelor's in nursing at Wilmington University, and immediately moved to the Eastern Shore where I’ve found my home and people. After three years of acute care nursing experience at Tidal Health, previously Peninsula Regional Medical Center, I did travel nursing in various locations for a few years and was then honored to join the Coastal Hospice team in November 2019. I accepted the responsibility of manager of Macky and Pam Stansell House in September 2021. Although I did not know what my career path would be, I now see that these experiences were exactly what I needed to fulfill my new purpose as Director of Hospice Inpatient Facilities for Coastal Hospice. I’m currently pursuing a master's degree in nursing from Wilmington University with an expected graduation date of May 2023.

Thanks to the unyielding support from Coastal Hospice departments and administrators, we have built a fantastic team of compassionate caregivers that I am proud to belong. We strive day in and day out to positively impact the lives of the patients and families we serve, creating a comfortable environment for all at Stansell House. Our team members never hesitate to go above and beyond demonstrating commitment to our purpose; it is not unusual to see members of our staff walking to work or
spending the night in a blizzard to make sure patients have the care they need or a hand to hold. I’ve seen countless acts of love and kindness in my time at Stansell House and I am grateful for contributing to this excellent patient care. As the sister inpatient facility to Stansell House, Coastal Hospice at the Lake provides a vital service to our community. Seen as our “hospice hospital,” Coastal Hospice at the Lake supports patients and families through some of their most difficult times by providing acute symptom management, caregiver relief, and psychosocial and spiritual support. As the newlyappointed Director of Hospice Inpatient Facilities, I am honored to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing team. I have encountered countless Coastal Hospice at the Lake team members who are dedicated to the work we do, each and every day. I have seen aides providing presence to anxious patients, witnessed nurses advocating for patient and family needs, and interacted with the loving hearts of all those that serve in this setting. I am grateful for the compassionate and competent care that our team at Coastal Hospice at the Lake provides. Above all, I am truly humbled by the opportunity to serve both Coastal Hospice team members and the greater community at the director level. I am inspired every day by the actions taken by every member of our team. I have full confidence that, hand in hand with these teams, both facilities will soar on their journeys to provide nothing short of the best hospice care.

Caregiver Academy
Support and Empowerment for Caregivers in Our Community Caregiving for a loved one is a selfless act of love.
For those who care for others at home, the experience can be immensely rewarding, but also demanding and isolating—particularly for those caring for loved ones facing life-limiting conditions. Similarly, for healthcare professionals, caring for those at the end of life can also be challenging and emotionally taxing. In both cases, time becomes more precious and the opportunities to reach out for support become less accessible. This is one of the reasons Coastal Hospice decided to launch Coastal Hospice Caregiver Academy, to bring support and empowerment to caregivers — both at home and in a professional setting. Our online programs are free and focus on bringing timely and relevant clinical education on end-of-life topics to clinicians and healthcare workers in general, as well as education and support to patients and their families, from practical to spiritual. Our goal is to share a wealth of information that our experts in End-of-Life Care at Coastal Hospice have accumulated in more than four decades caring for our communities. In the past months we have offered programs on grief, hospice eligibility, and pain management, and the response has been really extraordinary! But our engines are just warming up and our creative juices are flowing! In collaboration with partners in the healthcare community, our team is working hard, preparing programs on essential topics and getting ready to offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits and Continuing Education Units (CEU) for our healthcare professionals. More to come on that! We are incredibly proud of our presenters who are providing this essential information to healthcare professionals and advancing the care they provide to patients in clinical settings. With that, we are grateful to be able to bring timely information in support of those at home, the ones who selflessly care for love ones — our unfaltering caregivers.

Our Social Workers Dedication to Improve Quality of Life is Relentless
O
ne word, miraculous, describes the lifechanging work of our Coastal Hospice Social Workers. Their responsibility touches so many facets of one’s life — from providing meal supplements to ordering medical equipment, assisting patients with Advance Directives, helping work through complicated family dynamics, assisting with insurance challenges, anticipatory grief, and helping bring closure are but a handful of responsibilities. Their dedication to improve quality of life is relentless. Our social workers won’t quit advocating for others. Donor News WOWs at Work!
Thanks to the assistance of a grant of $5,000 received from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Coastal Hospice acquired three Workstations on Wheels (WOW) that are being put to work in our facilities Macky & Pam Stansell House and Coastal Hospice at the Lake. These units are extremely helpful for accessing electronic medical records (EMR) systems and enhance the safe handling and administration of medications, especially regarding the near-industry standard of bar code scanning. The system also eliminates paper use and copier expense while helping to prevent errors in medication distribution.
Kevin and Jackie Ball & Caryl and Hugo Cardenas Donate $35,000 in Appreciation for Coastal Hospice’s Work. “In the last days of our mother Lynne Gillen’s life, Coastal Hospice brought great comforting to our family. The staff was so helpful and, ever since, this organization has been in our thoughts. That is why we wanted to contribute to the wonderful work you do”, said Jackie Ball and Caryl Cardenas. Coastal Hospice is beyond appreciative of the support received from the Balls and Cardenas. In recognition of their generosity, a plaque naming Caryl & Hugo Cardenas will be placed in the Cape Isle of Wight Garden, as well as, a plaque naming Jackie and Kevin Ball on the community family porch — both at Macky & Pam Stansell House.

The Macky & Pam Stansell House of Coastal Hospice Receives $5,000 Donation from the Shaffer Family of Ocean Pines in Memory of Bruce W. “Boo Boo” Shaffer During a heartwarming conversation with our President, Monica Escalante and our Director of Advancement, Tammy Patrick, Pam Shaffer shared, “Stansell House staff was excellent, they went above and beyond to accommodate visits from family members, alternating them in and out due to COVID restrictions – our only regret is that we didn’t come here sooner.” Smokey added, “We never walked out of these doors at Stansell House worried that he wasn’t going to be taken care of.”

This gracious donation was made by his wife, Pam Shaffer and his brother and sister-in-law, Smokey and Sally Shaffer who are all residents of the Ocean Pines Community. We are grateful for the Shaffer family and the trust they placed in Coastal Hospice. It was our honor to care for their loved one, Mr. Bruce Shaffer.
5th Annual Michael Strawley Memorial Golf Tournament Raises $10,000 Organizers of the Michael J. Strawley, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament, held in November 2021 at the River Run Golf Club in Berlin, Maryland presented a check for $10,000 to Coastal Hospice for the support of charitable care at Macky & Pam Stansell House in Ocean Pines, Maryland. Now in its fifth year, the tournament has donated $31,800 to the organization since 2017.

Telescope Pictures, the Iconic Ocean City Beach Photography Business Raised $2,700 During a summer campaign, Telescope Pictures matched donations made by customers who rounded their purchase price to the nearest dollar to benefit Coastal Hospice’s “Be an Angel” Appeal. Thank you to the Cameron family for your continued support to our community.
Originally called the Bearded Clam Open, the tournament began in the early 1980s by Michael J. Strawley, Sr., the owner of Bearded Clam in Ocean City, MD. In 1995, Bearded Clam employee Tommy Riggins passed away and the tournament was renamed the Tommy Riggins / Bearded Clam Memorial Golf Tournament. Upon the passing of Michael J. Strawley, Sr. on September 21, 2016, the tournament was once again renamed in his honor. Over the years they have memorialized their fellow golfers by naming the rocking chairs, benches, and more at Macky & Pam Stansell House.

Honoring a Legacy of Love The Shaffer Family My husband, Bruce Shaffer, suffered two strokes, the last one on August 6, 2021. His brother Smokey, Sally [sister-in-law], and I cared for him for months before I decided to turn to Coastal Hospice. My only regret is not having Coastal Hospice involved sooner along our journey. The care they provided to not only Bruce, but our entire family, was absolutely outstanding. From the moment I entered the facility to the day Bruce passed away, the entire staff were kind, loving, and truly cared for us. The nurses were there, not only to care for Bruce, but to be my support system, they are truly angels in disguise. Not only the nurses, but the entire staff were available 24/7 whenever they were needed. I never left the Stansell House worrying if Bruce would be cared for or treated with dignity. I can’t express just what a huge difference Coastal Hospice made in not only Bruce’s life, but mine as well. Even with our donation to Coastal Hospice, no amount of money would ever be enough to express my gratitude the caregivers and administrative staff at Stansell House. God bless each and every one of you!
Pam Shaffer
