BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke Engines

Portability, performance and reliability are the hallmarks of Honda Marine’s new and redesigned portable engine models, the BF4, BF5 and BF6 4-stroke outboards.

Honda Marine debuts new engines with the BF4 and BF6 models, and redesigns the legendary BF5 models. Packed with the latest technology from Honda, the 127cc 4-stroke, single cylinder engines offer boaters the choice of four horsepower (BF4), five horsepower (BF5) or six horsepower (BF6). All three new engines are available with either a short (15 inch/38 cm) or long (20 inch/51 cm) shaft.

“The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines are easy to start, easy to stop and easy to carry. The new four-stroke Honda Marine engines are best-in-class performers. They are the right size for the right purpose,” said Mark DiPietro, senior manager, Honda Marine. “The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines feature a new internal fuel tank and new motor mounts to run quietly and smoothly, while delivering the longest continuous running time.”

The new Honda Marine BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines provide consumers four main features—portability, performance, reliability and comfort.

Portability A combination of light weight (roughly 60 pounds) and new carrying handle design make the Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 marine engines easy to transport and store. The tiller handle fully folds out of the way, making storage options even more convenient.

Performance The engines integrate a 1.5-liter, large capacity internal fuel tank, which delivers the longest continuous running time in their class—more than 40 minutes at wide-open throttle. Reliability Honda Marine’s new BF4, BF5 and BF6 models share the same, proven onecylinder, 127 cubic centimeter engine block and benefit from Honda’s 4-stroke engine technology. In case of an oil pressure drop, a new, low-oil alert system will automatically limit the engine speed to 2,300 rpm to protect the engine.

Comfort The new Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable engines feature a host of new technologies and features that consumers will appreciate.

• A new decompression mechanism helps make all three new Honda Marine engines easy to pull start, regardless of the engine temperature.

• One-push stop switch serves to shut down the engine with no chance of the engine re-starting.

Using a Smartphone Isn’t Always Smart On The Water Submitted by Sea Tow

eople rarely go anywhere on land without their smartphones anymore, and it has become increasingly common to see boaters using cell phones when they’re out on coastal and inland waters as well. That’s fine—as long as your boat is also equipped with a VHF radio, one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can have on board.

“Your cell phone could die or you could drop it overboard. We recommend people take a 5-watt handheld VHF along on their boat, at a minimum, to use as their primary form of communication on the water,” said Capt. Ed Schrader, owner of Sea Tow Hampton Roads, Va., which serves the busy waters of Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bay. “It’s better to have a 25-watt VHF mounted at the helm, however.”

Capt. Sammy Royal, owner of Sea Tow Horseshoe Beach, Fla., which covers a rural stretch of the Gulf Coast on Florida’s Panhandle from Waccasassa to Keaton Beach, said boaters can’t rely on their smartphones always “having bars” in his area. “Cell phone service is very limited here. There are small fishing villages along the coast that are nine or 10 miles apart with nothing in between,” he said − making it essential to have a VHF on board.

Another important benefit to using a VHF radio rather than a cell phone is that if you ever find yourself needing assistance, more than one listener can hear and respond to your call for help. “With a VHF, you are able to communicate with more people quickly on the water. Whether it’s Sea Tow, the Coast Guard, or a nearby boater, everybody’s going to hear what you’ve got to say,” said Capt. Schrader, adding, “The USCG’s Rescue 21 System also has VHF direction-finding capabilities and can obtain a relatively good location as soon as you click your mic and place that distress call.

This helps greatly if you do not know your location or don’t have time to provide it.”

Of course, a VHF radio can’t help you in an emergency situation if it’s not working properly. Both Captains advise using Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check service to quickly and easily check that your boat’s VHF is in operational prior to setting out on the water. To use the service, simply tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. You will hear an automated response and then the call will be played back to you, confirming that your VHF radio is working and allowing you to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check.

FREEDIVING – TRY IT!

W

hile visiting a friend of mine about 15 years ago, I noticed a book on his coffee table. It was called “Bluewater Hunting and Freediving” by Terry Maas, and it had the photo of a diver holding a bluefin tuna on the front cover. I already enjoyed hunting on scuba for groupers and snappers in my backyard, but the thought of spearing a tuna intrigued me to no end… and the thought of freediving also caught my attention.

I had a hard time finding like-minded friends to dive with at first, as freediving was not a mainstream activity in Florida at the time.

After researching a bit, I found a freediving school called Performance Freediving International and signed up for a course. I also found a freedive spearfishing club, which consisted of about 10 guys and no women. To this day, I give the same advice to anyone who wants to learn: “Take a class from a freedive agency, and join a local club so you can make friends and perhaps find a mentor.”

Before the class, I had never tried to hold my breath while holding still in a pool—called static apnea. I was predicting that I would be a one-minute diver, but after some instruction I held my breath for four minutes. Most importantly, I learned how to avoid a “blackout” and how to rescue a blacked-out diver. We were taught the importance of the buddy system and one-up/one-down diving. While these classes will at least double your breath-hold time, learning the safety aspects is even more important.

Fifteen years later, I can look back and say that learning to freedive opened a whole new underwater world for me. Now that I’m an oldster in the sport, I marvel at the growth rate, the number of agencies offering classes, the number of clubs in the area, and the large number of people that are in those clubs. It’s wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the sport.

Lest I give the impression that freediving is a young people’s activity or something that super-athletes do, let me debunk that myth. I have met overweight smokers that were very good at it, and I’ve been diving with 80 year olds who were still enjoying it. Freediving is for anyone

who is willing to give Photo by Joe Marino it a try. Whether it’s to spearfish, experience the ocean in a different way, or simply find your inner-self at the bottom of the ocean, it’s an activity that anyone can enjoy.

It’s a natural, satisfying and spiritual experience to hold one’s breath and become one with the ocean. If you have the slightest interest, do not be intimidated; it’s actually very easy.

Just give it a try… you might like it!

A Red Snapper Paradise

T

he Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission recently announced a 78-day recreational harvest season for red snapper along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The dates include Saturdays and Sundays, starting the first Saturday in May, then daily, starting May 27 through July 9. Following that, they will be open again on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, plus Labor Day. See www.myfwc.com for more details and up-to-date information.

This is exciting news for anglers who visit the Gulf Coast to catch and eat these tasty fish.

Charter captains are expecting to haul many snapper from the waters along Franklin County and are no doubt pleased to have the extra days to provide more opportunities for their clients.

People all across the country seem fascinated by these bright-red, beaming finfish and understandably so. If you’ve ever tasted them, you know they’re delightful. If you’ve ever caught one, you know what a fight they provide.

Snapper fishing in this area is without a doubt a family oriented adventure. This is not a complicated fish to target, but they do get big so small children may require help. Drop live or cut bait in front of them in a variety of presentations and depths, and provided they’re present, they will typically pounce on your hook. A simple dropper loop rig is easy to tie and extremely effective for presenting both live or cut bait. Weight sizes will often vary depending on depth and current.

State law requires the use of circle hooks and that you have a de-hooking device on board your vessel. The requirement to have a venting tool on board has been removed, but I highly suggest you have one. Fish coming from deep water often need to be vented and you should be able to perform this duty on any fish you don’t plan to keep.

Chumming for red snapper is perhaps the most fun, and the crystal clear Gulf water here is perfect for this technique. A pile of chopped cut bait thrown over the side will bring the biggest ones in the school right up to the boat. Drift a small chunk of that same bait on a 5/0 circle hook along with the next handful thrown over, and you can watch the fish you want come right up and eat it… now hold on because that fish is headed straight for the bottom!

Restrictive harvest measures taken over the last several years are perhaps paying off, but some would argue that the snapper population has never been in decline. Many local anglers would tell you that there are, and always have been, plenty of them to be had.

There’s no shortage of first-rate charter captains available to get you out for a red snapper adventure, but booking early is always a good idea.

A

fter more than a decade of fishing Bassmaster Southern Open events, local Florida angler John Cox finally won his first one.

The event, held on the famed Tennessee River impoundment Lake Chickamauga, was a three-day tournament that was very tough on most of the anglers including Cox. The 31-year-old angler is the reigning FLW Tour Champion and he is on a hot streak. After learning the 2018 Bassmaster Classic would be hosted at South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, he set his sights on winning an Open event to punch his ticket for a Bassmaster Classic berth.

Cox is known on the bass circuit as one of the best sight-fishing anglers. He used his keen eyesight and knowledge of spawning bass to win on Chickamauga. Cox was one of the few anglers who exclusively sight fished throughout the second Southern Open of the season. It was an effective technique for several of the tournament’s top finishers.

He put himself in contention for the win with a 22-6 limit on Thursday, followed by a 25-7 bag on Friday. His two-day total of 47-13 gave him more than a 3-pound lead heading into Saturday’s action, and his 20-6 limit on Saturday was heavy enough to secure the win.

The Mud Hole Custom Tackle pro, who hails from Debary, Fla., picked up a contingency berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods with the victory. Fishing all three Southern Opens this season will solidify that berth. He also won more than $8,000 in cash, as well as a Triton 19 TrX and Mercury 200 Pro XS boat/motor package worth $40,000.

“I’ve tried so long to win one of these Opens, it seems like forever,” Cox said. “I started fishing the Opens when I was 19. It’s where I started, really, so this definitely is a special thing for me. Building my own custom MHX rods is key for my success, because I can build technique-special rods and actions for different conditions.”

Cox won the Lake Hartwell FLW Tour event last season and is excited about his chances in the Bassmaster Classic there. He won the Hartwell event last summer fishing the back of creeks getting his aluminum bass boat in places where most anglers could not go. Although the Classic will be held on Hartwell in the early spring, Cox is pleased to be fishing his first Classic event.

Cox is having a decent start to the FLW Tour season, as well.

Fishing in his own backyard on the third event at the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla., Cox was super excited to fish his home waters. He led the event for the first three days to finish in third place and enjoy a nice payday. Cox finished in eighth in the recent FLW Event on Arkansas’ Beaver Lake after going out in fourth place on the final day. It was his second top-10 finish on the tour with just two events left this season.

southport-ocean isle June is without a doubt my favorite month of the year to fish the waters off Southport/Oak Island, with plenty of hungry fish returning to our waters in search of the new hatch of spring baitfish. Mahi-mahi can be heard from the cockpit of many boats this time of year as these colorful neon blue and green beauties jump and put on a show! Usually they are targeted in one of two ways depending on whether fishing in the Gulf Stream or on the offshore wrecks and reefs. Most partake in “double-dipping” their odds while trolling dead cigar minnows rigged with South Chatham Pirate Plugs trolled over the wrecks and reefs west/southwest of Frying Pan Tower; often catching king mackerel at the same time as the dolphin fish that are feeding in the same areas. The occasional African pompano will sometimes find its way to the angler’s bait, providing an unexpected treat for the table, using the same technique as described above. In the Gulf Stream fishermen usually find the larger mahi, with a large bull dolphin sometimes slamming a dead ballyhoo rigged on a wire pin-rig deployed off an outrigger. Be sure to keep a “mahi colored” Islander-style lure rigged with a dead ballyhoo riding on the second wake wave when running this spread; the biggest dolphin we have caught came off above: Robert Fox of Denver, NC caught this lure. Mixed in will and released this American red snapper be wahoo as well as while fishing offshore with Capt. Butch. blackfin and yellowfin tunas. Hearing that line clip snap open and the reel begin to scream brings on a rush like no other, hailing springtime fishing at its finest!

Offshore on the reefs in the 80-to 120-foot depth range you should find bountiful catches of a plethora of quality bottom fish. Groupers, snappers, black sea bass and triggerfish, to name a few, are in a state of constant feeding in June, as long as the tide is creating the current needed to stimulate a bite. Fresh squid dropped to the bottom on a beefy two-hook rig (Mustad 39960D 10/0 circle hooks) with a 12- or 16-ounce weight should do the trick and find you landing any of the species listed above and more! Another way to create a lot of excitement during your day of fishing on these locations is to deploy a dead cigar minnow on a live bait-style king mackerel rig behind your boat and allow it to dance in the current; oftentimes this will entice a mahi or king mackerel to also end up in the cooler! Nearshore, Spanish mackerel and sharks are plentiful and the quan-

tity and quality should continue to increase as the waters continue to warm. A trolling spread of Clarkspoons in #00 and #0 trolled behind #1 and #2 SeaStriker planers, around the schools of menhaden and glass minnows within five miles of the beach should find you hooking up on Spanish mackerel. Remember these are schooling fish and usually when you find the rihgt combination of color, size, speed and sometimes direction, your catch will most likely fill the cooler at the end of the day. Also spread amongst the large schools of bait and in the ambush areas created by the nearshore bottom contours will be several species of sharks that have moved back in and are ready to feed!

Blacktips, spinner, lemon, and bull sharks are all species that frequent our waters this time of year and put up an awesome fight. A couple of pieces of dead menhaden on a 12/0 stainless steel hook on a four foot piece of 49-strand wire leader with a ball bearing swivel will attract a bite from these predators. Try drifting the baits under a balloon on the line to enhance the experience!

Flounder is the word of the day in the backwater arena as they migrate back inshore to eat on mullet minnows and peanut pogies. The flounder bite should be getting better and better on drop-offs and in the same locations where anglers are targeting the red drum bite, as well as on the nearshore artificial reefs. After catching a tank full of live bait it is only a short run to be anchored up on a piece of structure with flounder waiting to ambush your baits! Float a live pogie under a balloon to attract a bite from the occasional citation-sized Spanish mackerel or king mackerel that is swimming through.

No matter what you enjoy catching most, June should be one of the most exciting months of the year. The fish are hungry, and as the month progresses and the weather stabilizes, your opportunities to enjoy a day on the water only get better and better!

Surf city/ Topsail Island Summertime is here and, for most of us in southeast North Carolina, this is what we live for. The kids are on summer break, the water is warm, and fish are biting. It doesn’t matter if you fish from the sand, pier, kayak, SUP, or boat; there is something out there for you to target.

Inshore this month, look for flounder holding in a variety of areas including deeper channels, docks, creek mouths, oyster beds, and dropoffs that have adequate tidal movement. I like to target flounder with three- to five-inch live menhaden and finger mullet on the Carolina rigs.

Z-Man MinnowZ and PaddlerZ’s fished on Fathom Inshore Jigs are very effective for catching flounder. Make sure the bait maintains close contact with the bottom and use Pro Cure bait scents to consistently catch “flatties” without the use of live bait. Cast the jig up current and let the bait bounce along the bottom back towards the boat. Natural colors like Bad Shad, Mullettron, Redfish Toad, Green Lantern, and Red Bone are my favorites while fishing clear water. If the water is stained after recent rains or while fishing more tannic water, I opt for darker colors and ones with chartruese, such as Sexy Mullet, Fried Chicken, Purple Demon, Chartruese Silver Flake, and Gold Rush, which are among my favorite to fish in dingy water.

Targeting red drum this month will offer opportunities to anglers fishing a large variety of different types of structure and bait selections.

Live menhaden and finger mullet fished on Carolina rigs, free-lined, or fished under a float are all extremely effective in bringing these fish to the boat. Look for the reds to be patrolling shallow flats, oyster beds, docks, grass shorelines, and creek mouths.

Look for reds to push off shallow feeding zones during the lower periods of a falling tide. Some of the best fishing can occur during these times when the fish are condensed into a smaller area adjacent to the flat. MirrOlure Poppa Mullet, MR17, and Z-Man jerk shads rigged on both jig heads and weedless keel-weighted hooks are great tools to catch red drum that are feeding on baitfish.

This is also the time of the year that shrimp really begin to migrate back into the marsh. Keep this in mind while targeting red drum, flounder, and trout. Soft plastic shrimp offering like the Z-Man EZ Shrimp fished alone or on popping corks will connect with good numbers of fish.

The nearshore fishing for Spanish mackerel will keep boaters busy this month. Spoons trolled behind planers, Blue Water Candy Spanish Daisies, and Yo-Zuri deep-diving plugs are how most anglers fill their coolers. Surface feeding fish can be present throughout the day, especially around area inlets; however, early and late in the day will give you the best shot at finding Spanish feeding on the surface.

Sea Striker Jigfish and Hogy Epoxy Jigs are extremely effective when retrieved quickly through the school. Fly fisherman have great success using sparsely-tied Clouser minnows and small Surf Candies.

There should be good numbers of cobia during the first half of the month. Look for the fish holding near large schools of menhaden near the shore or around sea buoys, sting rays, and turtles. Blue Water Candy Cobia Jigs, Z-Man Mag SwimZ, and HeroZ fished on ChinlockZ hooks are very effective for getting bites from these fish.

Further off the beach in the 8- to 22-mile range there will be good bottom fishing for sea bass, porgies, grunts, grouper, and pinkies. Metal jigs tipped with squid and hi-low rigs baited with frozen minnows and squid will help “fill the box.” In the same range look for amberjacks, barracuda, king mackerel, and the occasional mahi. Trolling and casting live baits to these fish is the best way to get hookups. Trolling Blue Water Candy dead bait rigs and deep-diving plugs are great tools for getting kings to bite.

Swansboro/ emerald Isle As June settles in and locals and tourists make their way to the beaches and coastal waters, rest assured there will be plenty of rod-bending, reel-screaming action for everyone. By June, every species that NC has to offer is readily available, both inshore and nearshore. Regardless of the heat, all of these species must eat. There are definitely some factors such as water temperature, tidal flow, available bait, weather systems and the moon phases that will affect the bite and learning these patterns is key to a successful trip each time you’re on the water. Anglers who can do this for every species available are able to adapt to almost any conditions Mother Nature can throw at them and still catch fish.

Nearshore Fishing

The nearshore water temperatures will be ranging from 70 to 75 degrees and everything should be biting! Late May proved incredible with plenty of eight- to 15-pound bluefish, cobia up to 70 pounds, bonito and Spanish mackerel along the nearshore hard bottoms and a mix of summer flounder and sea bass on the artificial reefs and live bottoms. This action will continue through June and anglers can expect to find grouper, amberjack, mahi, barracuda, king mackerel and even some sailfish to show up along our nearshore AR’s and live bottoms.

You’ll definitely want to load up on two-ounce bucktails and Gulp Shrimp to deep jig those summer flounder and large sea bass. Switching over to a three- to four-ounce bucktail tipped with a Berkley Gulp Eel will entice those big cobia that can often be found around schools of menhaden within a mile of the surf zone. Light- lining four- to seven-pound Spanish mackerel will require a four- to six-inch live menhaden or finger mullet, which I prefer to fish on two No. 4 gold treble hooks rigged with 20- to 30-pound test seven-strand wire. If you’re targeting king mackerel or mahi, you might want to step your treble size to a No. 2 and your wire up to 40-pound test.

If you’re ready to battle an arm busting brute, set up a heavy spin-

ning rod with 80- to 100-pound test braid, some 80-pound test fluorocarbon, and a 6/0 to 7/0 circle hook and slow troll around the nearshore artificial reefs or big ledges for a good chance to hook-up with a amberjack. These brutes are undoubtedly the strongest pulling fish for their size and actually make excellent table fare.

Inshore Fishing

Our inshore water temperatures will be hovering between 75 and 85 degrees with cooler water in the deep channels and the hotter water on the shallow flats and bays. Anglers will find plenty of bait along the ICW and mainland creeks. These creeks are full of newly-hatched mullet minnows, shrimp and small menhaden that will eventually make their way toward the open waters of the rivers and sounds. All of this bait will gain the interest of a variety of popular sport fish including flounder, redfish, bluefish, trout, black drum and sheepshead.

The redfish bite will be great this month. To quickly cover ground, it’s best to work a topwater bait along the marsh shores during the higher part of the tide. When fishing around a lot of shells, switching to a spinner bait will avoud hang-ups. A jighead tipped with a threeto four-inch soft bait such as a Berkley Gulp Shrimp can be fished in almost any situation with success.

Flounder fishing has been good so far this spring and should only get better through June with more summer flounder coming back to the internal waters from the ocean. I really like fishing a Berkley Gulp Pogy or Shrimp on a 1/4- to 1/2-ounce bucktail around deep water structure like bridge or dock pylons for big flounder. If you find yourself getting a lot of bite offs, switching over to a live mud minnow or finger mullet on a Carolina rig will produce flounder, too.

Other species that offer plenty of fun this month are black drum and sheepshead. These two species really prefer crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. I like to use a 1/0 to 2/0 short shank, wide gap hook for sheepshead and a similar sized circle hook for the black drum. Both species can be found around structure including bridge and dock pylons, oyster beds and rock jetties.

Atlantic Beach - Inshore & Nearshore Spanish mackerel fishing has been great over the last few weeks! They showed up mid-May and it’s been steady ever since. You can find fish along the beaches from the Oceanana Pier up to the Cape Lookout Shoals, around AR 315 and the inlets.

Also, anglers are seeing good action casting lures to them. The new small, heavy Glass Minnow Jigs we have in the shop have been killing the mackerel, too. Sea Striker Jig Fish Lures have been working very well in the 1/2-ounce to 3/4-ounce sizes. Just look for the birds and that’s a really good sign of feeding Spanish nearby. Along with the Spanish, we are seeing bluefish in the mix. The big chopper bluefish seemed to have moved north but they were sure fun this spring while they were in our area.

Cobia fishing has been up and down; the weather has been playing a huge role in what the fish are doing. Most of the fish have been caught at the Cape Lookout area so far, with some around the Beaufort Inlet and behind Shackleford Banks. Also, anglers have now been catching a few back into the waterways, as some of the fish have come inside. We should see fish for the next few weeks. As a rule of thumb, we usually catch cobia during most of June. Right now, it seems fishing on the bottom with shad seems to be working the best when the sight fishing slows, but you still should keep a rod rigged and ready with a bucktail on it, because we will see the fish pop up over the next few weeks. Sea Striker Bug Eye Jigs, Meat Hog and Bowed up Jigs have been working the best for us so far.

Flounder fishing has been good. The best action is at the reefs like AR 315, AR 330 and AR 285...all have been holding flounder. The Spro twoounce bucktail tipped with a four-inch Berkley Gulp White Shrimp is still the way to go. There’s something about this combo that other jigs just can’t 4 wilmington/Morehead city

match. The closest we’ve seen is the two-ounce Sea Striker bucktail, which we are catching a few on. Also, it’s never a bad idea to take a few dozen live mud minnows along to put out while you’re jigging the reefs. We’re starting to see some fish move inside now; the Port Wall, bridges, creeks and docks along the ICW are all great places to try. Also, drifting along the ICW between the AB bridge and port area has been producing a few fish.

Live mud minnows and Gulp baits have been working the best inside.

This is the time we start to see the sheepshead move in. We’ve already seen some nice fish and things will only get better from here. Anglers are catching them well around the AB Bridge, along with some good numbers coming from the Beaufort bridge too. The larger fish seem to always hang around the Port Wall. Fishing around the wall can be slow sometimes, but that’s where the big boys live all summer. Anglers have been using live fiddler crabs and live sea urchins to catch them around the bridges or any other kind of structure. Now that the water has warmed up just a little bit, they have really started biting pretty well. We have live fiddler crabs and live sea urchins in-stock if you want to test the waters.

Also, another big fish you can hang into just off the beach are amberjacks. Go to AR330 and drop bucktails or menhaden to the bottom. This will usually let you know pretty quickly if the fish are home. If you can get them chummed up to the top you can have some crazy topwater action on these huge fish using pencil poppers.

We’ve been seeing some decent speckled trout and redfish action back in the marsh areas. Haystacks, Core Creek and up toward the Neuse River are all good places to fish. You need to be looking for shallow water, oyster bars, grass beds... find bait and usually you will find some fish.

As for baits, Berkley Gulp, Redfish Magics, topwater plugs like Skitter Walks, popping corks, live mud minnows and dead mullet will all work on the specks. I’ve heard of a few being caught around the Sea Buoy area and at the AR Reefs. Most have been snake kings so far, but I’m sure the bigger ones are going to start showing up soon. When the kings move in, it’s best to use dead bait rigs and Pirate Plugs rigged up with cigar minnows; both will work great.

Cobia will still be around nearshore. Get out in the ocean and look for bait pods. Throw your favorite jig in and hang on - who knows what will come out. I like the new DOA Sna-koil on a 3/4-ounce premium jig head. Throw it right into the bait pod and let it fall...what’s next? Your drag screaming!

Hopefully June will have the wind will lay down and let us fish! It has been blowing too hard for too long.

As we get into the summer weather, we will see that the trout, drum and flounder will be found out around river shore marshes. The fish will be hungry looking for shrimp, crabs, and minnows.

If searching for drum, work the banks tight as the drum will cruise the shore in search of fiddlers washing out of the marsh.

Live bait and soft plastic baits presented close to the bank can give you some great excitement when they hit.

Warriors On the Water Military Appreciation Tourney

Last month I participated in the Warriors On the Water Military Appreciation Tournament. This was the twelfth year for this event.

This event has something going on for three different days.

May 3 was the Icebreaker Event that was held on Ft. Bragg. The Icebreaker is where the boaters will be paired up with their military co-angler, but it is much more than that. Everyone enjoys a meal together and listen to speeches made by military leaders, sponsors, veterans and pro fishermen. This year David Fritts, BASS Master Classic Champion and Shaw Grisby, BASS Elite Pro and TV host of One More Cast were there signing autographs and speaking with the military men and women. Shaw Grisby had be given an apportunity to tandem jump the day before with the Golden Knights. He was so excited about getting to jump with the best in the world! As the military personnel entered the building, they were greeted by a large group of volunteers where they were given WOW hoodies, shirts and so much more from sponsors of the event.

Before they left that night, they were all given a Lew’s American Hero Series fishing rod and reel. So many great sponsors support this above: SSGT Kevin Maxey of the USAF great event! fished with the author in the recent Warriors on the Water tournament.

May 4 was the VIP Day where several sponsors, boaters and volunteers got to go to Ft. Bragg and Pope AAF. This is a day where they got to see our military men and women in action.

They also got to do some hands-on training with the troops. This is always a fun day for everyone!

May 5 was tournament day for Warriors On the Water. We were all greeted with waters that were still high from the floods a week prior. Jordan Lake was now down to just four feet over normal pool and dropping every day.

This had a lot of the fishermen wondering how to catch the fish with so much water dropping every day.

tournament was delayed due to the bad weather. As we all sat in our trucks waiting in a line a mile long, volunteers got out and started bringing doughnuts and Subway breakfast sandwiches. (I don’t know of too many tournaments where you get that kind of hospitality.) I was honored to be paired up SSGT Kevin Maxey of Pope AAF. We chatted about how he liked to fish the rivers and farm ponds back home in Virginia while we waited for the rains to subside. His enthusiasm was contagious and I knew that I had a great partner for the day! We were boat Number 52 of 150 boats, all carrying a military man or woman for a great day of fun and competition. The fishing was tough for us but we had a great time together. SSGT Maxey proved to be a quick learner. I showed him how to tie different knots and how to cast a spinnerbait. He ended up catching three bass and I don’t know which one of us was more excited. We got to go across the FLW stage where he was interviewed by BASS Pro Shaw Grisby.

What a great experience this event was for me. Thank you for your service, SSGT Kevin Maxey!

offshore/Pelagics For fishermen here on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina the month of June always brings 1 thing to mind – The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament!! It’s time to break out the big boy tackle and start the hunt for a huge blue marlin and hopefully a huge payday!!

Our May fishing started a little slower than expected. The wahoo and blackfin tuna hung around a bit and the huge schools of gaffer size mahi have been slow starting. There have been a few decent days for a few boats here and there, but at this time we have not seen the exceptional catches we have all been eagerly waiting for. No doubt, they will be here any day and the fishing will be great; it just has not happened yet. The marlin have showed early in decent numbers and some good-sized fish have been caught. Hopefully, that bodes well for the tournaments as well as everyone out there fishing. Guess it ultimately continues to prove the point that these fish have a mind of their own and that they do not travel on “our schedule”.

June fishing will usually see a transition from full blown gaffer mahi fishing to a little more of a mix of things. There will be plenty of nice fish around but there will also be some schools of smaller bailer size fish begin to show up, so you will want to be prepared for whatever you find (like always, honestly!) The fish are normally aggressive, so tackle or tactics are not often the key...you just need to find them. My best advice is, don’t overrun them – they all have tails, they swim wherever they want and there is not fence that tells them they can’t go anywhere but the Big Rock. If you see a temp break or grassy area inshore, don’t be afraid to stop and check it out. There

will be a wahoo or two around, but generally not in great numbers and there will often be some blackfin around as well. The sailfish will begin to show up along with a few white marlin, and of course, the blue marlin will be at their peak during June. Start your day out and catch some fish to eat and then you can always push on out and try your luck on a marlin. It makes for a fun day overall.

These mahi will be found most anywhere as the summer gets warmer, but you can easily begin targeting them in less than 20 fathoms if you find good water conditions, and then, of course, they will be found on out as deep as you want to go. There are no huge secrets, mahi will eat most anything, but bright colors seem to do well most days. All you really need to do for a marlin is add two or three larger baits to the spread, something like a blue/white islander and horse ballyhoo will work fine. The vast majority of your marlin bites will be on a short rigger, followed by a flat or a shotgun.

Put a couple of big baits there and hang on!

School is getting out, people are taking vacation and all that means there will be tons of boats on the water for a nice weather weekend. Your favorite spots are probably going to be crowded, so think about trying somewhere different...again, these fish have no fences! If you plan ahead and spend some time offshore you can have some awesome action in June. offshore/bottom Summer Transition …Go Deep

June is a month of change, and that means go deep for the tropicals and expand your light line bait selection to adjust to our new “visitors from the south.” Here off the southeastern coast of NC, we have the luxury of enjoying year-round bottom fish, but also seasonal visitors like sailfish and wahoo are here this time of year inside the break. In addition to the ususal suspects of kings and dolphin on the light line, yellowfin and blackfin tuna, sailfish and wahoo are a distinct possibility on the light line this time of year, due to the warmer water temps that push inshore. All of these species are present, but vulnerable to different types of tackle. Wahoo can be caught on regular king tackle, but I suggest increasing the wire diameter to #108 stinger-size to prevent bite offs.

Sails are wire shy on the light line, and I would suggest keeping a pitch bait ready on flouracarbon in case one swims up to the boat. It’s easy to sell a live cigar minnow to a sail and get a bite. FYI…no one ever accused a sailfish of being really itelligent.

Since my assignment is the offshore bottom fishing forecast, I’ll get to the good stuff. June is a wonderful month to score some serious gags, scamps and red grouper with the right bait. Of course, live cigars and sardines are the ultimate bait on the bottom out there, one none of them can refuse, but several baits eliminate all the trash bites from sea bass, grunts and pinkies and get only the real bites. Live pinfish from the marina, and jigged-up grass grunts (tomtates), sailor’s choice and nearshore pinfish are the ultimate grouper baits. Grass grunts appeal to the gags like nothing else, but pinfish are the bait of choice for large scamps. There is something about a live pinfish that pulls the trigger for a large scamp. In fact, nothing else triggers the predator instinct of a grouper like a struggling bait on a Decoy jig. Period. All grouper eat minnows and snappers (pinfish included), but nothing makes it happen like a struggling bait attached to a “Decoy”. The biggest scamps and gags are not idots. Notice I did not say the biggest red grouper are not idiots… because they are idiots, inside or outside the break…regardless of presentation or tackle. Gags and scamps are much more wary of leader, tackle and bait presentation, no question about it. The folks that focus 8 wilmington/Morehead city

on grouper fishing will come home with grouper. The folks that fish cut bait will almost always come home with a box full of sea bass, grunts, pinkies and an occasional grouper. I’m not looking for those bites, I’m looking for grouper bites! Do yourself a favor, keep someone on a rod that is specifically fishing for triggers, beeliners, pinkies and grunts to get a box full of fish, but keep everyone else on the grouper stick, fishing the big baits. The box at the dock looks a lot better after doing it like this, and keeping the light line and/or kite fished correctly.

A mixed bag of grouper and big snapper from the bottom; wahoo, dolphin and kings with an occasional tuna from the light line is the recipe for great photos, memories and dinners.

Be Unconventional in Your Tackle Selection

There’s no doubt that with all the advances in technology light tackle can handle its fair share of challenges. Between braided line and technology advances in rods and reels, I’m finding more and more uses for my once thought of inshore tackle. While trolling near shore recently, I decided to put using light tackle to the ultimate test. I know there is a trend with using light tackle for larger nearshore and offshore species, most of this trend I believe stems from two things. The first being a tremendous change in tackle. Over the last 10 years, inshore tackle has become stronger, lighter and faster in all accounts. The second reason I think this trend is becoming more of a norm is because it’s simply more fun.

I remember when I first started nearshore fishing. We would troll Clark Spoons behind a 20-40 foot leader, a two-ounce trolling weight, 40-pound line and a six-foot trolling rod. I can’t tell you how many times a 14- or 16-inch Spanish mackerel would hit and everyone in the boat would get exited hearing the drag scream. But I was always disappointed in the overpowering of those fish with that tackle set-up. It almost didn’t seem fair to the fish since we were completely overpowering them and, though reeling in any fish is fun, it just wasn’t as fun as reeling in the same size fish on light tackle.

I started making the switch to light tackle by using Yozuri deep diver plugs for the same near shore Spanish trolling. First I started with 3 inch and then worked my way up to 5 inch. Of course a light tackle rig doesn’t have the drag scream that most trolling rods do but it doesn’t matter once you hook your first five- to tenpound fish. Any type of hard plastic lures have always been my favorite, whether I was bass fishing in a lake or targeting fish I had never caught before in Bermuda, hands-down, my “go-to” bait is a hard plastic lure that can dive four to eight feet. Somewhere between those two things is probably what made me decide to take trolling plugs to another level.

My seven-foot Duckett inshore rods and CABO 50 reels with 20-pound braid found themselves paired with 40-pound mono leader (for the stretch) and a Magnum Deep Diver. Yes, it looked ridiculous when I finished tying the knot and took a step back to gander at what I thought was a great idea. My inshore rods paired with a few seven- and eight-inch plugs that had diver lips the size of the three-inch Gulp I was using for flounder the previous day. For a split second I thought to myself, this is stupid. Then I thought to myself, at one time people thought selling bottled water was crazy, too. So I threw my rods and tackle in the boat and a buddy and I headed out for a nearshore trip.

It wasn’t long after having lines set in the water before I found myself hooked up with a king mackerel pulling on the other end of line. Our four other lines had to be quickly cleared; we both knew we needed to be running this fish down before he spooled us. With an uneasy decision to make and in an effort to keep line on the reel, I reluctantly set the drag to the max I thought the line could handle, while my fishing partner made a frantic, yet methodical effort to get the rest of the lines cleared and into the boat. We landed that fish about 20 minutes later; he measured almost 40 inches long.

With an eight-inch Magnum Deep Diver hanging out his mouth, I briefly remembered that moment in the garage I spent looking at the same lure with indecision. I then quickly thought about how I was going to get an ice-cold bottle of water out of the cooler and chuckled to myself about the irony.

We only caught one more king that day, but I know the rest of the summer would be spent pushing my light tackle to the limit. A good quality rod and reel with braid should be your starting point. From there I would recommend using different leaders...there may be times you’ll need fiveto ten-foot fluorocarbon leader or even more. but I highly recommend adding an equal amount of mono to fluorocarbon if you’re using braid. The mono will give you some stretch that you simply don’t get with braid and may help you keep those bigger fish on the line for a little longer. As for me, I am going to continue to push my light tackle to the limit; it simply seems more fun, more challenging and more fair to the fish.

Wrightsville Beach June...what a great fishing month around southeast NC! Lighter

I’m not sight-casting for them, we are fishing around inlets, shoals and nearshore artificial reefs. I float fish, bottom fish and kite fish in these areas with live menhaden, spots and mullet as bait. You can chum if you like, but the sharks and rays will come in numbers!

Tackle run down: PENN Battle II & Clash Spinning reels 2500 & 3000 sizes for the redfish and flounder. For cobia: PENN Slammer III 5500 & 6500 spinning reels and PENN 20LW Fathom casting reels.

Rods are PENN Battalion and Regiment 6’6” & 7’ medium and med/ heavy for the redfish and flounder; for cobia, PENN Rampage or Carnage II Jigging series 50 to 100 class casting and spinning. Line is Spiderwire Ultra-cast in 10- and 15-pound test for the flounder and reds. Use Berkley Pro Spec Chrome mono in 20- and 30-pound test for the cobia; that is great line!

Everybody loves to catch and eat flounder; they are really getting their act together by June. You can find flounder just about anywhere when June rolls in; just knowing where to look to find the keepers is the key! In the Wrightsville area, I look for keeper flounder around deeper channel drop-offs, in waters of five to 15 feet deep. The local inlets and cuts such as Carolina Beach, Masonboro, Mason’s and Rich’s inlets and Snow’s Cut are always a good place to find some keeper size flounders.

If you want to go the artificial route, try bigger baits...this will help you catch more keeper-sized flounder. If you would like to go with live bait for the flounders, try mud minnows, small mullets or small menhaden as live bait. Rig these live baits on Carolina rigs with an Eagle Claw L42 1/0 hook and eight to 14 inches of 30- to 40-pound fluorocarbon as leader. I prefer egg sinkers as my weight; the secret to how much weight you use is “as much as you need to stay on the bottom but as least as SolarFlect™ Low-E Multiple Pane Vinyl Frames you can get away with.” You need to be on the bottom for flounder Insulating Glass Glass but going lighter will always get you more bites!

Redfish are in their summer trend by June and the trick to summer reds is go early before that sun is high and hot in the sky. Topwater lures and rattling corks in the shallow waters earlier mornings and afternoons will produce redfish. I prefer MirrOlure Top Dog Jr’s and Top Pup’s for great ‘walk the dog action’. Working When it’s time for you to replace the windows and grubs like Berkley Gulp later in the day in deeper waters will also produce Reds for you. Slow rolling spinner baits with a Berkley doors in your home, EcoView can install the beautiful, Gulp Ripple Mullet (four inch) in the color Root-Beer Gold/Chart durable, energy efficient products you desire.

Tail as the trailer has produced me some nice reds when the water heats up. Sometimes it can be just like colder mouths...slow down your presentation a little when the water gets hot. Give the redfish a little more time to catch up with your bait when the water temp is over eighty degrees.

Last but never least...cobia fishing is in full swing by early June and should be good until early July. It’s already been a great year!

I look for cobia around inlets, shoals and bait schools; nearshore/ offshore reefs and ledges are also a good place to look. With the water being clear most of the time in June, it should easier to see those brown logs in the water. I like to throw big jigs, swim baits 10% off replacement windows and live bait to the cobia. Color really does not seem to matter, but I recommend that you go bright; Blue Water Candy makes a great and doors when mentioning this ad! cobia jig but I always add a 6.5-inch Berkley Gulp Nemesis! kayak Fishing A Red and Black Drum Spring

This has been a wild spring! We have received a large amount of rain and the wind out of the southwest has put me off the water a few times already this year. I did have a chance to slide the kayak in from a friend’s dock and get into some protected waters far up a creek to hide from the wind.

I think you can tell by the title what kind of day we had. It was a Sunday morning; we got a little rain Saturday night and the water was still pretty dirty. That did not stop us! We were tired of making excuses why we could not get out and fish. Well, the tide was right for launching, so despite the water quality, off we go.

I went into this day of fishing more excited to get back out in my kayak and cruise though the creek and not be stuck doing “honey-do” lists around the house. My wife has realized if it is really windy out she pulls out the pen and paper and invents things for me to do around the house.

The spot we were fishing is normally our fall red and trout spot, but due to the wind, we decided to give it a go. We hit our first spot and I started throwing soft plastics and moved on to MirrOlures with no luck. My fishing partner was around the corner working the same baits with the same results. As the tide started to fall we moved down to our most productive spot.

Once we anchored our kayaks so we could use the current to move our baits in the right direction. I proceeded to fish soft plastics for a while with no luck. We got lucky and netted some mud minnows so I changed over to a bottom rig. My first mud minnow went to a crab.

The next one landed me a nice black drum.

Not too long after I caught the black drum, I hooked up with a nice redfish that I ended up losing at the kayak. It appeared to be around 24 inches and put up a nice fight. I convinced myself it was better to lose him at the side of the kayak than to try and land and release him.

My fishing partner was dead-sticking a popping cork for a while with no results. However, once he switched over to a bottom rig he was starting to get into the reds. We were joined by another guy kayak fishing and it did not take him too long to figure out that live bait on the bottom was the trick to catching that day.

This is not the kind of place you can just work all day, then paddle back to my friend’s dock; it gets really shallow fast, so we had a good window of three hours to fish. The wind had switched some and we had it in our faces all the way back to the dock. This was not that bad but made sliding around some of the tight corners where the creek gets skinny a little challenging.

Spring can be a hard time to get out on the water. The weather just changes whenever it wants, and the wind can really put a damper on your fishing. But if you know your area and can figure out places you can get into and fish with some protection, you can get out and have a good few hours on the water catching fish.

We did see plenty of bait in the creek and that turned out to be the most productive way to fish that day. The bait is only going to get better and I never head out without at least one rod rigged to fish on the bottom. Today it worked great! If I can get out next weekend, it might be a Berkley Gulp day of fishing.

Carter Whitten Named Marine Patrol Captain Carter Witten received the golden bars of a captain at a pinning ceremony recently at the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries Headquarters in Morehead City.

Witten, who most recently served as sergeant in Craven, Pamlico and Beaufort counties, now leads the Wilmington Marine Patrol District, which runs from the Emerald Isle bridge to the South Carolina line and includes two sergeants and 14 field officers.

He began his duties as captain April 17, replacing Jason Walker, who was promoted to major in December.

Among the Marine Patrol officers, Witten is known as the “go-to guy,” said Col. Dean Nelson.“If you needed a job done, he was the one who stepped up, volunteered and did it,” Nelson said.

He has probably volunteered to help do projects for every section

in the division, Nelson said.

He has also now worked in all three Marine Patrol Districts.

Witten, 41, began his career with Marine Patrol in July 2001 as a patrol officer in Hyde County. He transferred to Carteret County in July 2002, where he patrolled the Newport River, and later to Craven County, where he patrolled the Havelock and New Bern areas.

He was promoted to sergeant for Hyde and Dare counties in September 2008, and transferred to Craven, Pamlico and Beaufort counties in March 2011.

Witten thanked his family and fellow officers for supporting him and helping him get to where he is today.“I’m enjoying the new position and am looking forward to getting to know my new family down south,” he said.

Witten is a native of Havelock. Prior to joining the Marine Patrol, he worked with the Havelock Police Department from October 1998 to July 2001.He graduated from Havelock High School in 1994 and received his Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate from Carteret Community College in 1997.

Harkers Island Can you believe it? June is here and we’ve had some world class fishing already this spring!

Water temps are really getting just right, finally into the 70’s and the annual cobia run has been in full swing now for a couple of weeks. The Spanish mackerel and nice-sized bluefish are being caught in large numbers and the big chopper blues are still around out around the Cape Lookout Shoals...but they won’t be here much longer. They’ll head north as the water warms up.

The Spanish are being caught from Beaufort Inlet along Shackleford Island to Cape Lookout and out to the Shoals. Along with the Spanish, the Atlantic bonito (which is an actual tuna and not to be mistaken for false albacore) have been very abundant and are very tasty. These fish can be caught by trolling spoons or casting small plugs such as Rapala X-Raps, MirrOlure MirrOglass plugs and the Salty Bay Baits Glass minnow.

Speaking of spoons, the new Clark Spoon Electric Chicken has been really hot and they are now switching over to VMC hooks to improve hook quality. Those looking for the elusive above: Tom Gibbons of cobia need to cruise the local inshore Fayettville holds up a 17.5 pound beaches along Shackleford and Cape bluefish caught fishing the Cape Lookout looking for the bait balls Lookout Shoals with the new (menhaden) that these cobia usually topwater SeaStriker Cedrus plug get around to feed on. This is mostly with Capt. Noah Lynk. where you will find the cobia other than bottom fishing for them near the local Inlets of Beaufort and Bardens.

Inside fishing in the sounds and local marsh areas of the Newport River and it’s tributaries, Middle Marsh and Northriver Marsh are now starting up to pickup. To me the best fishing has been for red drum with flounder still on the short side and trout being somewhat scarce, although there are a few nice flounder around. The larger ones just haven’t moved in yet.

For those fishing for cobia, we have also been getting into some old drum around the Cape Shoals as they make their annual migration back into the Neuse River to spawn. These fish are ranging from 40 to 50 pounds and are lots of fun to catch. The local Spanish and flounder fishing which is so popular in summer should continue to be good. As the month of June moves on, the Spanish will move into deeper/cooler water around 40 feet deep. The flounder will be caught better in the early mornings and late afternoon to evening, as they like the cooler parts of the day for feeding.

Flying Around With Captain Lee

It has been an amazing last month with a lot of big bluefish; we saw many in the 36-inch range. With the heavy rain and the major cold front, catching slowed down some, only to pick back up. The Roanoke had some of the highest flows reaching around 35,000 CFM, but things are getting back to normal quickly. On the bright side June fishing should be really good.

Topwater speckled trout in the river are high on my list of things to fish for. I look for edges or drop-offs with a shell bottom and current as well as a good supply of bait for them to feed.

With top water, MirrOmullet, Top Dogs, Zara Spooks with no rattles and Yo Zuri Banana Boat lures top my list for topwater trout. Live shrimp is great but everything else loves them so you may want to use mullet or small bunker.

Flounder are moving in the inlets and are getting to where they like: the creek mouths. Falling tides are when I like these areas and both live bait or Gulp works great. Cast with Gulp up into the mouths of the creek and very slowly work back; set the hook as soon as you feel the bite. If you are using live bait, let them chew on it a while. In shallow flats, three-foot depths or less, I like to use a popping cork and fix the leader with a small 1/4-ounce lead head so it is about six-inches off the bottom. Work it slowly back with small “popping” movements of the cork.

Red drum or redfish are in the docks and on the flats. Around the docks, live bait and Gulp are my picks. Fish the live baits on a Carolina rig and, with the Gulp, I like to use a worm hook and rig it weedless so it will not hang up. Fish tight drags on both. Topwaters are great and I use the same ones as I do for the speckled trout on the flats. Gold spoons are my “go-to” baits for the flats and I like to rub a little Pro Cure Crab on the spoon. If I’m using ive bait I do not work it very much but with Gulp, use small popping movements.Some nice blues will still be around and sometimes run with the drum on the flats.

You will start finding Spanish in the waterways, and Got-Cha’s work great for them. I like using the smaller ones with single hooks. Use gold on sunny days and silver on cloudy. Also small darts and jigs will work. Use regular mono for Spanish as they will eat the knots of fluorocarbon. Keep it simple and make long casts to them.

As always, be safe out there as when the weather warms people go out in droves. Watch out for the other guys as they may not be looking for you.

A cofferdam is a watertight structure built to allow the enclosed area to be pumped out, creating a dry work environment.

The Battleship cofferdam will enable workers to repair and restore the ship’s corroded hull, which is paper-thin in places.

The Battleship’s last major dry docking and repair work was done in 1953.

The cofferdam will be constructed over 18 months by Orion Marine Group of Norfolk, VA.

The SECU Memorial Walkway • • •

Under construction simultaneously, the SECU Memorial Walkway will be a half mile long, 10-foot wide timber walkway surrounding the Battleship.

The walkway will be above the waterline but below the main deck of the Battleship. It will allow visitors to see the ship’s entire hull for the first time.

The walkway will include five bump-out areas to honor each of the five branches of the military – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. The Merchant Marines will be honored by flying their flag on the quarterdeck.

The walkway will be open to the public and free of charge.

By Carlos Hidalgo I love fishing streamers for trout. This may be leftover from my days fly fishing for peacock bass and saltwater species in Florida. It may also be because casting and stripping is just more fun than high-sticking a nymph. Or maybe it’s because streamers attract the biggest trout.

For these reasons, and probably a few others, you should carry a few streamers in your trout boxes, and the Hoochie Momma should definitely be one of them.

I think two keys make this fly effective. The oversized head pushes water and emits vibrations that fish sense with their lateral lines, and the UV Krystal Flash presents very interesting visual effects. The Hoochie Momma can be stripped quickly, stripped slowly with occasional dead drifts, like a dying minnow, or even allowed to dead drift.

Rolls Out Exciting Developments For Offshore Anglers

amaha has some exciting new developments in the marketplace this summer that should catch the eye of offshore anglers. The latest version of the venerable F350 outboard now offers five full years of limited warranty protection. Also, Yamaha’s Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System has a new feature that will make large boats powered by big outboards even easier to control.

The newest version of Yamaha’s most powerful outboard, the new 5.3-liter F350C now provides five full years of limited warranty coverage, wrapping a refined outboard package with a list of benefits and features that are still unique in the marketplace nine years after the debut of the original F350.

“The inclusion of five years of limited warranty coverage with the F350C underscores the reliability of the F350,” said Ben Speciale, president, Yamaha Marine Group.

“We are confident that this benefit for our 5.3-liter V8 customers builds in exceptional value for Yamaha’s most powerful outboard on the market.”

Yamaha’s F350 redefined offshore power in 2007 and still has little competition in its class. The first F350 offered an outboard capable of the raw thrust necessary for pushing larger and heavier offshore boats. Thousands of F350s later, there is still nothing like it.

And for boaters looking to control all that power, the new and improved Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System makes fishing from and docking big boats a breeze.

Yamaha Marine Group recently announced a new feature that gives its Helm Master Integrated Boat Control System even greater levels of control.

With the Set Point boat positioning function, boaters now have the capability to integrate all boat control systems and then guide them with GPS navigation technology.

“The introduction of Helm Master changed the way boaters think about controlling larger outboard-powered boats,” said Speciale. “Helm Master made docking less stressful and fishing on the open water more enjoyable. Set Point takes that functionality and precision to the next level.”

Set Point is comprised of a suite of satellite-guided capabilities designed to improve the boater’s ability to fish, maneuver and simply enjoy life on the water. Using a unique dual-antenna GPS to provide Helm Master’s operating system more navigational information, the Set Point function provides even greater and more precise control.

Set Point has three primary modes: Stay Point, Fish Point and Drift Point.

Each Set Point mode provides a solution to the tricky maneuvering challenges boaters encounter every day.

Stay Point keeps the boat positioned near a particular spot; it maintains a selected position and heading. This mode is particularly helpful when a boat must hold a position and heading, for example at a fuel dock or at a bridge opening. In adverse weather or high currents, Helm Master uses higher RPM and greater engine activity to keep the boat as close to the mark as possible, within a 75-foot circle of the set point.

Fish Point enhances fishing options; it maintains a selected position, but not a heading, and primarily uses only idle RPM to do so. The Fish Point mode makes use of a captain’s knowledge in heading a boat into the current or wind, bow upstream or downstream, to maintain a heading. Under normal condi-

tions, the Set Point function will use no more than idle RPM to hold the Fish Point position, which means Fish Point operation is less likely to scare the fish.

In stronger seas, Fish Point will attempt to keep the boat on the point selected using no more than the requested Fish Point RPM to do so, up to 2,500 RPM. Yamaha’s Shift Dampener System propellers play a role in keeping the boat on point quietly, too.

Drift Point allows the boater to drift the boat with the wind or the current; it maintains a selected heading, but not a position. Drift Point mode is particularly useful to maintain a heading when drift fishing or kite fishing. Drift Point allows the boat to drift with the wind or current, but stay pointed in the heading chosen.

Each Set Point mode is activated with the touch of a button. The Set Point control buttons are integrated into the new Helm Master joystick and use Yamaha’s new CL7 touch screen display to initially configure the operator’s preferences. Each Set Point mode is user-defined for the needs of individual boaters. Helm Master Set Point hardware includes a dual-antenna GPS and stern-mounted lighting that illuminates any time any mode of the SetPoint system is active.

The Yamaha CL7 display has a 7-inch touch panel screen with full multi-function display (MFD) capability and connectivity. The display offers precise engine and boat systems data for up to four outboards on one screen, along with other MFD functions such as maps, fishfinder, and graphing capabilities using its built-in 10 MHz GPS. It is the primary display for Yamaha’s fully integrated Helm Master boat control system, and is the required point of access to configure Set Point.

MOTOR REVIEW Suzuki Marine Introduces New Models To Outboard Lines

Suzuki Marine is expanding two of its most popular lines of outboards with new models to fill the needs of boaters and anglers.

New SS-Series Models The performance-oriented SS-Series, with its signature matte-black paint job and distinctive graphics, is growing with a new 200hp four stroke and the availability of a 25-inch shaft length on its premier 250 SS V6.

“People really like the performance matte black look and have been asking us to expand the line,” said Gus Blakely, vice president of sales for Suzuki Marine. “We’re happy to do that by adding the 200SS and making the 250SS available for more kinds of boats.”

The Suzuki 200SS features Suzuki’s 200-horsepower inline 4-cylinder powerhead, with 175.0 cubic inch displacement, dual overhead cams and a 10.2:1 compression ratio for increased power and performance. Engine operations are managed by an onboard Engine Control Module and an array of sensors that control the engine’s multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection system and Lean Burn Control technology.

The 200SS will come with conventional mechanical throttle and shift control and will be available in 20-inch and 25-inch shaft models. At just 518 lbs, this 4-cylinder outboard delivers V6 like performance in a more compact, lightweight package.

The availability of a 25-inch shaft model for the popular 250SS has been eagerly awaited. ric Scordo, of Watertown, N.Y., is a trophy catfish hunter. On April 30, he achieved a long-held dream of breaking the New York state record for channel catfish when he boated a massive 35.25-pounder from Lake Ontario’s Chaumont Bay. Caught on live bait using an Okuma reel paired with an Ugly Stick rod and an Addya hook, the beast smashed the existing record by more than 3 pounds. The previous record, which stood since 2002, weighed 32.12 pounds and was caught from Brant Lake, a 1,300acre reservoir in the Hudson River drainage.

Scordo is a little bit of a fanatic about catch and release. The philosophy makes sense for someone specializing in large catfish, as it can take these fish decades to grow to state record size. Scordo was determined to release his record fish alive. So after it was weighed on a certified scale at Chaumont Hardware, the fish was taken to Chaumont Bay Marina where assistance was provided in keeping the fish alive and healthy. It was kept in a bait tank for a full day before a state biologist made it out for verification.

After the record was verified, Scordo nurtured the fish to recovery and released it back into Chaumont Bay. An impressive gathering of local media were on-hand to video the fish’s release.

This contest offers Fishmaster customers and anglers throughout the U.S the opportunity to win a custom fiberglass reproduction of their award-winning catch crafted by American Fish Taxidermy.

Contestants can submit unlimited pictures of their catch for a chance to win monthly prizes and to become eligible to win this grand prize, valued at $500 to $1,000. Entrants are encouraged to submit as many photos of different catches as possible. The contest kicked off Saturday, April 1, 2017 and ends on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017.

“We design our products with the ultimate goal of helping our fellow anglers reel in the perfect catch,” said Greg Spivia of Fishmaster. “We want to showcase our loyal customers with the fish they caught in a way they can remember forever, through partnering with the most talented fish taxidermist in the U.S.—American Fish Taxidermy.”

Through the contest, Fishmaster is awarding monthly prizes through September. Monthly prizes will be announced via email and Facebook on the first Monday of each month. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on Oct. 15 via email with public notice on Fishmaster’s Facebook page. Monthly winners are eligible for the Grand Prize; however, our independent team of anglers will review all submissions before naming the big winner.
