rifting between forested banks over bedrock shoals, it’s easy to forget where you are on the Buford Dam tailrace of the Chattahoochee River. This beautiful stretch of water snakes southwest through densely populated suburbs north of Atlanta, yet riverside development is limited. There are long stretches where this river feels like wilderness— where the sounds of the city are replaced by lapping oars and the soft swish of fly rods cutting air. Chris Scalley, owner of River Through Atlanta guide service, manned the

oars. He rowed and coached and again showed us the bounty of the “Hooch.” The Angler Magazine Atlanta co-publisher Bob Rice and I have fished with Scalley several times before. Our late-September trip was another good one. The river’s wild reproducing brown trout were active in cooling weather patterns, and they punctuated a steady catch of sleek and feisty rainbows. The Chattahoochee is one of the best tailwater trout fisheries in the Southeast. It is a success story for fisheries management. Georgia DNR stopped stocking brown trout in the river in 2005 after natural reproduction was discovered. Today, those beautiful butter-bellies still thrive. It’s a unique situation that has made this 30-mile-long stretch a destination fishery. The Hooch has produced a string of state-record browns, including the current nearly 21-pounder. But before you get geared up for 30-inch trout, realize that while monsters do exist in the river’s deep holes and log jams, they are not frequent catches. Over several trips with Scalley, it seems a pretty good day consists of numerous rainbows, a handful of browns in the 10- to 12-inch range and a fish or two in the 14- to 16-inch range. Of course, the opportunity for larger fish is always present. Early in our float, a wading angler hailed us over to show photos of a 20-plus-inch fish he had in his net earlier that day. It was proof the big girls were eating, and it inspired us to fish our triplenymph rigs more diligently. After bringing several 8- to 12-inch rainbow trout to hand, I hooked into our first brown, a gorgeous 15-incher that took the big black stonefly anchoring the rig. We went on to catch several more good browns and a bunch of rainbows. The bows preferred either the small Baetis nymph in the rig or an egg pattern Scalley called a Stormy Daniels. While fishing three nymphs at once might sound like a recipe for disaster, it’s actually quite simple. Under Scalley’s coaching, even beginners catch on to the looping lob it takes to cast such a rig. Once it’s in the water, nymphing with an indicator is a lot like the bobber fishing you did as a kid. You just float down the river and watch for a fish to bite. Those bites should be frequent over the next few months. Water temperatures remain consistent on the tailwater year-round, and fall and winter offer great fishing for wild browns. THE EVOLVING ART OF DAYTIME

ithin the last decade, swordfishing has steadily evolved from being exclusively a nighttime pursuit into a roundthe-clock affair. The ongoing pioneering of daytime swordfishing techniques leaves room for experimentation to perfect personal preferences within this art. A lot of work goes into going after just a single bite, and many variables are at play fishing in 1,000 to 2,000 feet. Then, factoring in tackle, crew and the inconsistent bite style of these fish, the best way to figure out daytime swordfishing is to go do it. Although you might see little sport in utilizing an electric reel, this type of fishing requires an incredible amount of teamwork. There’s always a job for everyone on the boat. Good communication is essential, not only to land fish, but also just to set the bait correctly. Rigging a bait for swordfish is more satisfying than buying one pre-rigged. It’s a chance to flex your creativity and experiment with different styles and baits. After all, you want more than one bait on-hand during a sword trip. Whether you go with the tried-and-true squid bait or hardier mahi- or bonita-belly strips, the most important factor is whether or not the bait spins. If it spins on the surface, it will spin worse at the bottom, and it must be modified or scrapped. Personally, I like a glow-in-the-dark squid skirt on any bait, not just for added movement and visual enhancement, but the skirt also streamlines the bait and compensates for rigging errors. Once you’ve sewn the bait, slowly troll it behind the boat to check for spinning. If your Franken-bait is straight as an arrow 8 NATIONAL

on the surface, send it on down. Affix breakaway lights along the wind-on leader near the bait. About 100 feet up the leader, use rigging floss to create a loop where the clip for the weight will attach to the main line. The clip is attached to about 30 feet of lighter leader, in the 50-pound range, that is then affixed to a weight. Adjust weight to the current. A reasonable go-to is 10 pounds. Again, ensure you have extra weights on board before investing in a sword trip. The last thing you want is to get revved up over a bite, come up without a weight and have to scavenge a tool box for your heaviest wrenches to toss overboard. There are a few different styles of driving the boat for swordfishing that have proven successful. Regardless of the method you chose, the idea is to keep the weight from free falling and tangling the line. Keep tension on the line while it is going down, take up the slack, and relocate the bottom. Come up off the bottom 100 feet, or so, and continue that process as you drift over varied depths. Keep eyes on the rod tip the entire time, and find the happy medium between not blinking and not losing your mind. Swordfish might swipe the bait before committing to the hook, or they might hammer it. Sometimes they just start swimming to the surface with it. All the different bites look different on the rod tip. You might see the rod bounce with taps, get heavy and not bounce at all, or just completely go slack. Whether the bite is obvious or subtle, setting the hook or knowing when to reel up to check the bait is a matter of experience. Swordfish are counted like tarpon, where the overall bite count is included along with those landed. Don’t even bother fishing for swords if

you don’t have patience or enough love of fishing to be okay with coming home skunked. It’s all hands on deck boating one of these very aggressive, potentially large fish. If you’re lucky enough to get a swordfish to the boat, you’ll find out very quickly which friends to invite back on the next trip. While the captain remains behind the wheel, ideally someone will be on the rod with another person unclipping the weight and pulling off the breakaway lights as the leader gets to the boat. Once all that gear has been removed, there is the matter of hand-leadering the fish, gaffing it, potential use of tail rope, and heaving that sucker into the boat. There are many ways to go about this, and many ways the fish could react. Swordfish are well known for stamina and can be quite dangerous to green gaff. Be prepared for the fish to get a second wind boatside. This is where communication and teamwork can make or break the experience. Go into a swordfish trip with everything you’ve got, but with the intent to relax and hang out. You might sit there all day without a bite, so bring people you enjoy the company of, and leave the “I’m-so-bored” guy at the dock. He is worse than bananas, anyway. Capt. lorida has moved one step closer to allowing harvest of goliath grouper. In early October, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved a draft proposal to allow limited and tightly controlled harvest of the species. Don’t run out and stock up on heavy tackle just yet. A permit to keep a single fish will come with a hefty price tag, and anglers will only be allowed to keep a smaller one. These iconic fish, which grow to more than 800 pounds and 8 feet in length, have been protected from harvest in state and federal waters off Florida since 1990. The harvest proposal is at the beginning of the long road that leads to regulation change. The proposal, with changes, must now be brought back before the commission at a future meeting. If approved again, it would then enter into the public feedback and data gathering stage before a final public hearing in March 2022. Regulations changes would take effect in 2023, at the earliest. Here’s an outline of the limited season the latest draft proposal would create: • Goliath grouper season would run March through May. • A lottery system with a $10 entry fee would issue $500 permits to harvest one fish per person. • Only 200 total permits would be issued. • There would be a slot limit from 20 to 36 inches. • Harvest would not be allowed off Palm Beach County, the Atlantic

• Fi coast of the Keys and Dry Tortugas National Park. • There will be post-harvest requirements. Commissioner Robert Spottswood said limited harvest should help better determine the overall stock of the fish in the next three to five years. “This stock is rebuilding,” Spottswood said. “We’re hearing that it can easily sustain this very small harvest of fish. We’re going to learn something from it. And more importantly, we’re going to give some access that we can give safely and sustainably back to the stakeholders that own the resource.” Goliath grouper were in a bad situation prior to harvest restrictions put in place in 1990. There are numerous factors that make the species susceptible to overfishing. They are a desirable and easy target for anglers because of their size and because they inhabit shallow waters in comparison to other groupers and tend to gather in large numbers in predictable locations. Since the 1990 harvest ban was enacted, goliath abundance has increased, and that positive trend is expected to continue. A limited harvest, managed similarly to the existing alligator program, would provide both data and funding for goliath grouper research, while allowing expanded recreational angler access to the species. Hialeah Angler Catches State Record Peacock

f all the non-native fish species that have established themselves in South Florida’s system of freshwater lakes and canals, peacock bass are the only ones that arrived legally. Butterfly peacock bass are a species anglers are glad to have, and Felipe Prieto, of Hialeah, caught a dandy out of a Broward County lake while fishing live bait after work. His 9.11-pound, 23 5/16-inch catch was recently certified by FWC as a new state record. Prieto’s big peacock bested a mark that has stood for nearly three decades. The previous state record of 9.08 pounds was caught back in 1993. It is not, however, the largest ever caught in Florida. FWC has record of a 12-pound, 25.5-inch peacock that was not submitted for state record recognition. That fish was not far off the current IGFA all-tackle world record, which weighed 12 pounds, 9 ounces and was caught from Venezuela’s Chiguao River in January of 2000. Peacock bass are native to South America, and they were intentionally introduced to Florida. The FWC stocked peacock bass in coastal southeast Florida canals in 1984 to help reduce the number of undesirable exotic fishes, especially spotted tilapia. An awesome new fishery was a side benefit of the stocking. Limited low-temperature tolerance normally restricts butterfly peacocks to Broward and Miami-Dade counties, but recent mild winters have allowed anglers as far north as Palm Beach County to enjoy catching this species. “The butterfly peacock bass is colorful, a lightning-fast striker and a hard fighter,” said FWC Commission Chairman Rodney Barreto. “Anglers from across the country travel here to catch a peacock bass, which only adds to the tremendous economic impact fishing has in Florida. This unique game fish is just one of the features that makes Florida, truly, the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World.”

all fishing can be the easiest and best fishing of the year. For me it is the flounder run, schools of trout and reds under flocks of gulls, and the prelim to giant trophy trout time. The fall flounder migration is definitely a staple of fall fishing, and I know that it goes on wherever flatfish exist. We do have a closed season for the first time, so be sure to check the regs wherever you plan to fish. Most states have changed flounder regulation in the last couple years. Not only are flounder easier to find when they travel though the passes in their voyage to their spawning grounds, they also feed aggressively as they follow baitfish out of the bays. When I focus on flounder, I change my presentation dramatically. I like to apply scent to my lures, which gives you a great advantage when it comes to catching flounder. A tandem rig is a popular method to utilize for flounder. Since flounder frequently ambush bait by burying themselves in the sand, I keep my lead lure in contact with the bottom at all times and give the lure a twitch with my rod using a sideways motion. If I am in a boat, I do this with my rod tip down, but while wading my rod moves to my side. Finding trout and reds smashing shrimp under feeding gulls can really get your heart pumping from the visual excitement. It can also provide nonstop fish on every cast. This is especially true in the fall, when it is more common to find larger trout schooling than in the other three seasons. When fishing the birds, I use a heavier jighead than I typically do. A ¼- to 3/8-ounce jighead works well. The more skittish the fish and birds, the heavier head I will use. I do this simply to increase my casting distance, so I can reach the schools sooner and stay farther away in an attempt to

not break up the schools or push them down. Using a durable soft plastic and smashing down the barb of the hook are helpful in maximizing the number of fish you can pull off each school. If you can keep the birds off of it, throwing a topwater might pull out some of the larger fish and add to the fun and visual stimulation of the entire event. By the end of fall, trophy trout become my main focus, and this continues through mid-spring. At this time, the water will have cooled considerably, and the majority of bait will have left the bays. Artifical lures will become a more reliable option for catching trophy trout. Enjoy this cooler weather, and spend some time on the water. f you’ve spent any time on a boat in sharky waters, there’s no doubt the tax man has taken his due from what you thought was going to be fish dinner. Racing sharks to get your catch to the boat is a part of fishing, and it’s a component of our fisheries that NOAA wants to look at a little closer. NOAA Fisheries is considering an exempted fishing permit (EFP) that would authorize the collection of fish with evidence of shark depredation on charter vessels in southeast Florida. The project seeks to collect fish carcasses with evidence of shark depredation and conduct genetic analysis to determine which shark species were responsible for the damage. If the EFP is approved, fish carcasses collected may be outside of the range of minimum size limit, bag limit, or seasonal closure regulations. Information collected would be useful in understanding the impact shark depredation has on the charter fishing fleet in South Florida. Researchers would work with specific captains who fish in federal waters between Sebastian Inlet and Jupiter Inlet, Fla. These charter vessels would continue routine fishing operations, and if a fish is caught that exhibits signs of depredation, the fish would be retained by the researcher, isolated from other catch, and transferred to Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Harbor Branch Laboratory when returned to port. Signs of depredation from landed fish include: fresh teeth marks and active bleeding; partially removed trunk tissue (scales, skin, and muscle); exposed musculature and/or internal organs; and missing fins. The skin and flesh exposed by the bite wound would be swabbed to identify depredating species from trace amounts of DNA left on prey remains. Researchers would retain a maximum of 240 individual fish distributed across the following species complexes during the study: snapper-grouper, dolphin-wahoo, and coastal migratory pelagics. Some samples collected may be under-sized, above the recreational bag limit, or caught during a closed season. Only the captain and crew aboard authorized charter vessels would be permitted to retain species with evidence of shark depredation that may be recreationally harvested out of season, or out of the authorized recreational bag limits or size limits. tournament has raised almost $500,000 for non-profits over the years. The annual tournament had 180 anglers, including 23 guides, and more than 170 fish were logged. Team Shields was the big winner in the guided division, with Captain Ed Zyak and anglers Matt Hester, Jake Hester, and Steve Shields taking top honors. In the unguided division, Scott Butler took first place. Tournament proceeds benefited Project LIFT, a nonprofit that serves more than 500 teens and young adults annually and provides mental health and substance abuse treatment through the platform of vocational training. At no cost, at-risk teens engage in hands-on training in welding, HVAC, solar installation, construction, auto repair, and more, while licensed therapists work with them to address issues including depression, addiction, trauma, and anger management. t the close of each tournament season the Backcountry Fishing Association (BFA) recognizes the “Best of the Best” in each fish category, as well as the Lady Angler of the Year and Team of the Year. And this year’s winners are: • Lady Angler of the Year was awarded to Hanna Tillett, who won Lady Angler in two tournaments, April and September, weighing in two trout, for a combined weight of 7.37-pounds. She was awarded a ZF Custom 7'2" rod, medium action, custom cork grips and $350 cash. • Slam of the Year was awarded to brothers Joe and Matt Canestrari. It was the only slam of the season, and was caught in April: a trout 1.88-pounds, redfish 3.55-pounds, and a snook 7.13-pounds for a combined weight of 12.56-pounds. The two anglers were awarded two Diawa Saltist 2500 spinning reels, valued at $400. • Team of the Year placed in five of the nine tournaments, placing first in two of the tournaments, TJ Keifer and Tony Vercillo. he hallmark of the Florida fall season will be the arrival of the November winds. Fresh breezes of 15 to 20 knots will accompany the first bona fide cold fronts that will begin to sweep across our peninsula and become the key component in shaping the offshore fishing playing field. “The wind is what makes the waves,” and strong velocity winds from the northwest, north and northeast will post up as frontal sessions that can “blow” for many days in a row, making for rough and choppy ocean conditions during this month. Consequently, there will be many days that will just not be fishable or will be prohibitive for

small boat owners. Anglers must especially pay attention to offshore weather forecasts to identify favorable weather windows that will allow for safe offshore fishing excursions during November’s varied weather menu. Despite the potential for choppy

conditions this month, there will be favorable stretches of userfriendly days that will allow deep sea anglers to head east of the St. Lucie Inlet and fish the expansive and diverse reef ecosystem in our offshore backyard. Bottom fishing strategies will rule these days,

as many species of snapper will have solidly populated the reefs from 50 to 150 feet of water. Lane snapper will be the most abundant, especially in near coastal depths of 50 to 60 feet of water. Lane snapper can be found around most types of “bottom” and will be best caught by deploying cut baits tight to the reef structure. Keeper to medium size mutton snapper will be found on the same reef sites and fall to similarly presented baits (use longer leaders, with baits presented just away from the reef structure to catch the larger muttons). Grouper will also be a favorite target species for anglers this month, as the “open season” on these bottom brawlers continues through November. November’s winds will be a double-edged sword for the near coastal ocean, as they tend to create unfishable days due to heavy seas, but these choppy and churning waves will also have the potential to help oxygenate the water column, making for a more active fish population. Watch the weather in November and plan offshore fishing trips carefully as open weather windows will present anglers with bountiful, salty rewards.

e all know fall is here as license plates begin to change colors with the northerners migrating down for the holidays. Migrating with them are some edible fish species such as pompano, redfish, and Spanish mackerel providing a great opportunity with slightly cooler weather. There has been countless undersized pompano already showing up close to shore along the beaches

ypically, November kicks off the fall migration and really good fishing along the Treasure Coast but, is it even possible to get better than what we’ve had recently? It seems like the blackfin regulations have already benefited both them and us, and, sails, kings, mahi and cobia have been cooperating nicely too! Huge schools of big blackfin from the Six Mile Reef out to the Hill and extending to the north and south the entire coastline were common place in October and I don’t see any reason why it would change over the next couple months. Same goes for the sailfish, dolphin and kingfish bite. Live baiting along the Six and Eight Mile Reefs this month is a great way to capitalize on these great fisheries relatively effortlessly. A Fish Razr stripteaser, if not two, is virtually a necessity out here and when you’re fishing in a crowd, it makes a huge difference. I pull it from my Cannon. Speaking of downriggers, make sure when conditions allow to fish a down bait. Kings, cobia, wahoo and blackfin will often find that first, although be ready for mahi or

for surfcasting, and they tend to get bigger and caught further from shore as fall continues. Brined clam strips are often the best baits for the early pompano season, but sand fleas and FishGum are some other good baits to try with incoming tide. The pompano could also start showing up inside the St. Lucie Inlet between the two channels in about 7-to-12foot depths. The snook have moved further back up in the St. Lucie River and can be caught jigging and live baiting the bridges and docks. These fish are still “full” from the mullet run, so live shrimp can work best as a lighter snack. As the water cools down, we catch lots of snook casting the mangroves of the South Fork using D.O.A. jigs and Giles~Jigs, as well as topwater flies and lures. The Spanish mackerel and bluefish should be starting to show up in November. This is a fun opportunity for fishing from

the beach or taking the boat south towards Peck Lake Reef. My favorite lures for this are Gulfstream Flash Minnows and Got-Cha Plugs. November can be the peak of the redfish migration as they start showing up at the inlet and inside near the “Hole in the Wall.” Slower

ith the hot months of summer behind us, November brings milder weather to the Treasure Coast. The dry season has arrived, so rain won’t be a huge factor now. Water temperatures will begin cooling down as winter is fast approaching. The winter migration of many fish will begin this month and bring exciting fishing action to anglers in the area. Enjoy November and get out fishing soon! Redfish can be found around docks and mangroves with D.O.A. Shrimp or live bait. I love fishing docks this time of year. You just never know what might be lurking under one. I fish my lures from up tide of the dock, so that it will stay under the dock. You only need to

twitch it and can fish it much longer that way. It’s always a challenge in getting a fish out from under one, but the excitement is well worth it. Snook fishing will be good around the usual haunts. Docks, bridges, and inlet fishing should produce some good snook action as the water cools off. There will still be some tarpon around the area. My favorite is the D.O.A. TerrorEyz. Live or cut bait will work also. The pompano are beginning to return to the river and will be a favorite target for anglers throughout the winter. When fishing the surf, use sand fleas or

ovember is a time to be thankful for the calm days with cool crisp air as we approach winter season. Grab your lucky hat and bring the family along for a great day of fishing on the Treasure Coast. Grouper fishing will be excellent as the cooling waters will get these grouchy guys moving. Get ready for some mighty fish brawls as the gag and red grouper will be taking the bait and become the main course on a stacked menu of delicious table fare. Be sure to claim your heavy weight grouper title before season closes on Dec. 31. Holy Mackerel! Fire up the smoker and prepare some fish-dip for the Thanksgiving table. The king and Spanish mackerel will be on the scene, hitting the surface with great

great artificial lures for the pomps. You should still find some flounder around on the sand flats of the inlet and river. Look for mackerel, bluefish and jacks to fill up the inlet this month. Most shiny lures will work on these predators. You can also find them hanging in the channels up around Harbor Branch. Docks and bridges will hold black drum, sheepshead and the sand perch as they begin to arrive this month. Live or dead shrimp always works best on these fish. It might be breezy out there, but the fish will be feeding! Remember, fishing is not just another hobby, it's an ADVENTURE! Good fishing and be safe. intent! Snapper tend to migrate toward warmer waters, so when the bite goes cold offshore, head toward the warm Gulf Stream and keep an eye out for structure and temp changes in the water. We have recorded double-digit catches of big bull and cow mahi’s over the last few weeks, as well as random wahoo and tuna hitting our baits. Numbers of pompano, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel will invade the river and beaches as the month goes on. Focus on the edges of sandbars or flats that drop off to deeper water when looking for a pompano. Sailfish Flats, Bear Point, Jaycee Park Flats, and Round Island are all good areas to start looking. While slow idling these areas look for fish skipping in your wake. I prefer to use Doc's Goofy Jigs once we have located some fish. Casting up current and working the jig back towards you allows the jig to get down in their feeding zone. Some days it is necessary to tip the jigs with shrimp or Fishbites to give them a little more incentive to commit. Along with being fun to

catch they are great table fare as well. Sheepshead are another one of our winter staples and are blast to catch on light tackle. Another plus is that they are found almost everywhere in the river during the winter months. Channel markers, docks, bridge fenders will all hold good numbers of fish. Anchor up current and pitch your baits back towards the structure you are fishing. Live or frozen shrimp work well when fishing for sheepshead in our area. Depending on the depth, a small egg sinker or a heavy split

The bottom fishing bite is still red hot as large mangroves and mutton snapper are being caught all over the reeds from 60-to-90 feet of water. ovember is shaping up to be an excellent month for fishing the offshore waters out of Fort Pierce! We have already had a few cool fronts roll through in October, which is getting these sailfish lit up and moving through our local waters. There have also been some mahi-mahi around as well. When targeting sailfish and mahi-mahi in November, be sure to start fishing anywhere from 100-to-300 feet of water. Look for a temperature change of 1-to-3 degrees to decide where you would like to start fishing. There will usually be a color change as well when there is a temperature change present. Don’t be afraid to troll some through the “green water” which may look a little dirtier to the naked eye but will hold bait and sailfish galore. Last year from November to January, more sailfish we’re caught in this dirtier and slightly cooler water, than anywhere else. The mahimahi are swimming with the sailfish

because they are chasing the same bait. Anywhere you see flying fish is a good place to start fishing for both species. You can troll ballyhoo or artificial lures for both with great success. Using wire leader for your rigs is never a bad idea either as those pesky wahoo could always be in the mix to come up and grab a bait. High speed wahoo trolling should be a hit as well with the cooler temperatures

Just be sure to fight hard when you hook them up to get them away from the sharks! There have also been multiple reports of cobia on these reefs as well. Most fisherman have been fishing a flatline while on the reef and catching some nice cobia as bycatch. Good luck out there and tight lines! The moderate water temperatures of the Indian River Lagoon in November allows both warm water and cooler water gamefish species to take advantage of the abundant baitfish available. Tarpon, flounder, snook, pompano and more can be found, many times in the same areas, in and around Sebastian in November.

SEBASTIAN RIVER – Snook

Tarpon fishing will continue to be a possibility during warm periods. Sharp cold fronts, if they occur, will push a variety of species into the deeper warmer waters of the Sebastian River; including gator sized seatrout, ladyfish and even pompano.

Anglers can fish their way as far back as they can get into the backwaters of the lagoon where they will find redfish, seatrout and snook willing to strike top water plugs, D.O.A. jerk baits, and live shrimp and finger mullet. Fish jigs, small plugs or live shrimp around the spoil islands to keep your rod bent with a mixed bag including trout, reds, and pompano. Seatrout are closed to harvest Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.

SEBASTIAN INLET – The inlet will continue to yield snook and redfish to live bait anglers both day and night. Pigfish, pinfish, croakers and shrimp are the best baits for inlet snook fishermen. After dark, large bucktails and plugs take their share of snook. The big news for November at Sebastian Inlet is usually the flounder run. The first good cold front in November signals anglers that it’s flounder time. This year the FWC has closed the harvest of flounder on the Atlantic side of the state from Oct.15 through Nov. 30. If you want to try and catch a trophy flounder to get a picture, live mullet and mud minnows are excellent baits, and jigs will do the trick as well for flounder of all sizes. NEAR SHORE ATLANTIC – There will be calm days in the late fall, and when the opportunity arises it is worth a ride out the inlet to take a look and up or down the beach. Pelicans diving will give away the location of schools of mullet and greenies which could and should be shadowed by tarpon, sharks and big jacks. Diving terns are usually associated with schools of glass minnows, a staple of the Spanish mackerel that are passing by on their southerly migration. Tight lines!

f the cold fronts start pushing down like some past Novembers, we will see our usual push of Spanish mackerel from the beach out to 60 feet of water. Clark spoons and small feather jigs work great, always watch the sky for birds as well as for surface action since they’ll be feeding as they move south. Cooler water should move some fish onto the 60-foot reefs. Live bait slow trolled on the surface around structure should produce some king mackerel as well as a few cobia. It’s good to keep a spinning rod with a cobia jig ready just in case. Cobia are curious creatures that will often pop up when you stop over a piece of structure. The 80- and 90-foot reefs should produce some good catches of lane snapper, trigger fish, and mutton snapper on the bottom. Also, a good

chance for kings and cobia. I don’t expect to see the big cold fronts we’ll see in December and January but just a slight cool down will change our water temps enough to move some fish. INSHORE: November will bring on

the cooler weather and give the fish some relief from the heat. Snook, bluefish and Spanish mackerel should be on your radar. Kayak fishing the inlets, docks and seawalls will produce most of the inshore species. Live mullet is your best bet along with hair jigs and D.O.A. jerk baits. The bluefish and Spanish mackerel will start to show on the beaches and push in the inlets. Any shiny and quickly retrieved presentation should entice a bite from these toothy fish.

OFFSHORE: Northeast winds will start to push through this month making beach launches a little more difficult. Pick your days wisely and

be prepared to get wet on launch and re-entry. Fish will start to move in shallow as the cold fronts push through. Look to target mahi, kings and sails in the 80-to-120 foot area trolling live goggle eyes and blue runners. Bottom fishing during this time is my favorite. Muttons and yellowtails will be lurking in the 60-to-100 foot reef patches. Frozen sardines, live mullet and frozen gogs on long leaders in the 40- pound class will work best. See you on the water!

eavy rainfall has triggered Lake Okeechobee to rise quite a bit over the last couple months, which has added to the extreme growth of native and non-native grasses this summer. We have an abundance of eelgrass, hydrilla, dollar pads, and even some new growth of cattails. Add a huge bass population to the mix and the town of Okeechobee has all makings of a great fall and winter season. As the long hot summer finally comes to a close, the water temperatures in Lake Okeechobee are finally dropping. The water level is high enough to provide access to the marsh areas as well as the shoreline cover. Each fall, savvy anglers eagerly

anticipate the first wave of large female bass as they move along the shallow shorelines, where they gorge themselves. From October through November and into December, Lake Okeechobee’s bass go into feeding mode, chasing and eating shiners, shad, bluegill, and whatever else they can find. Once the bass locates a food source, they will hang out in that particular area as long food is available. Last year we located a spot early in October that bass frequented fall, winter, and spring, with bass coming and going in conjunction with the moon phases. We were able

to catch bass in this same area during pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn. It is not easy or normal to find a spot that will produce big bass and large numbers of bass. Sometimes a little luck plays into it. We fished this productive spot many different ways and from many different angles. At times during the season, the fish would be holding in one single piece of cover along the area, other days they would be scattered along the whole stretch. Don’t misunderstand, there were a few days when we could catch fish in our number one spot, and we would have to move to another area to continue to catch

fish. Every year that I have fished Lake Okeechobee, I have learned something different about the lake, the lesson is not always immediate or mind-numbing. Many times, it is very subtle and only becomes clear after much retrospect. Bass fishing is a wonderful sport, and I can honestly say that I still get excited when a big bass comes to the boat. Fall fishing on Lake Okeechobee is second to none. Traffic is relatively low during November since many of our visitors from the North aren’t here yet. The days are mild, and the bass are biting, quite simply it just doesn’t get much better in the bass fishing world. The north end of Lake Okeechobee is holding fish around Grassy Island, Buckhead Ridge, Tin House Cove, and Bird Island are great spots this time of the year around the northern end of the lake. From the east side of the lake at J&S Fish Camp all the way around the north end of the lake to the Point of the Reef, bass are already being caught in great numbers. Each year it’s only a matter of timing until the bass are triggered to start their fall-feeding gorge fest. It happens suddenly and without fanfare, one day the bass will be of average size, and the next day you might catch four or five bass over seven pounds.

s the year winds down and fall approaches, divers on the Treasure Coast can expect great diving provided the weather cooperates. Autumn brings with it cold fronts and shorter weather windows, so divers are wise to stay prepared to take advantage of calm seas when the opportunity arises. After a period of inclement weather, a little scouting will help determine conditions beneath the surface and make for a more enjoyable day. Diving is great in our area yearround. Unfortunately, strong winds associated with cold fronts could make area inlets challenging or even treacherous. However, even after summertime has passed, sea conditions below the surface are consistently favorable due to the

proximity of local waters to the Gulf Stream. A strong east wind may push this warm-water current closer to shore resulting in good visibility and warm temperature even if seas are rough. Weather windows this time of year maybe short and calm, seas may only last for a day or two. Divers should stay prepared by having tanks filled in advance, dive sites selected, and gear packed so when conditions cooperate on short notice, they can take advantage. If equipment has not been used for a while it would be smart to assemble the scuba kit and check for proper function- any issues should be dealt with prior to the next trip. During November, vis reports could be scarce and divers may have to do some reconnaissance when planning the next trip. The Titan tug out of Stuart is a great dive site to test visibility, temperature and current since it is directly east of the St Lucie Inlet and just a few dozen feet from the Six Mile Reef. A quick bounce dive to determine conditions could prove beneficial. If vis is bad, head south towards the Loran Tower ledge or reefs off Hobe Sound. If vis is good, dive sites closer to shore maybe better including the Donaldson Reef area, Guardian Reef, Pipe Barge or the Cement (concrete) Barge. This

time of year brings changes to local reefs in the form of more frequent strong winds and cold fronts. When conditions allow though, divers

can make great dives if they remain prepared and poised to take advantage of narrow weather windows when they arise.

After the Mullet Run, Is There A Life?

hile I’m writing this month’s column, it is middle of October and we are in full swing fishing the mullet run. Brutal predators busting up huge, massive schools of mullet and experiencing these moments on the water is just priceless. With so much baitfish in the water, fishing is not always easy, but when you figure it out, it can be pretty wild catching big snook and tarpon in these mayhem situations. Usually by the end of October to the beginning of November, the mullet run has faded out. We will see some single pots of them, but no longer the big schools. Fishingwise, I really enjoy this time of the

year since there is less competition and there are still plenty of big fish around. I keep fishing around structure but mostly up in the river both day and night. The flies I’m using are also baitfish flies but just a smidge smaller size, 1/0–to–3/0 in grey, purple and black. The leader I’m using is 6-to-8 feet long with a straight 30-pound and a 40-to-60-pound tippet. In some situations, I have to make fine adjustments to the leader and flies like in any given fishing situation. Back to the headline question and the answer. Yes, there is life after the mullet run, and in my opinion, a very good one! Looking back to my log, I can recall a lot of really nice

Lenny Schelin Jr. Memorial Tournament Contributes $50,000 to Fund Brain Cancer Research

he 2021 Lenny Schelin Jr. Memorial Tournament was the third year for the event, honoring the memory of beloved captain and mate Lenny Schelin, Jr. Raising awareness of brain cancer and helping those similarly afflicted, has eased the struggle and tragedy of losing Lenny for his family and friends. The 2021 tournament also topped the 2020 donation funding Glioblastoma research at the Cleveland Clinic Innovation and Research Center. Neurologist Dr. Oszkar Szentirmai of the Clevenland Clinic stated, “The $50,000.00 donated this year will fund research aimed at identifying genomic patterns in individuals here in Florida and across the nation.” All costs of the tournament are covered by contributions from local marine businesses, restaurants, and purveyors. The donated auction items provided great entertainment and bidding competition, raising additional funds. Part of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) South project, the C-44 storage reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area was put into operation in September. Located on the north bank of the C-44 canal, which connects Lake O to the St. Lucie estuary, it has 30-foot-tall walls and with the adjoining STA, covers 12,000 acres. It will capture both local basin runoff and Lake O water when necessary, and remove substantial amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen, both of which can fuel Cyanobacteria blooms. Indian Riverkeeper attended a small gathering of water advocates, Army Corps Engineers and SFWMD officials to tour the project in September.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY ARTIFICIAL REEF UPDATE:

SIXTH TUGBOAT BECOMES ARTIFICIAL REEF

n September 25, 2021, the Tug Singleton became St. Lucie County’s sixth tugboat artificial reef. A grant contract with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), combined with a generous contribution from the Blake Charron Foundation (BCF), sent the tugboat to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 165 feet of water. This deployment was part of a group of reefs in the People’s Reef Project, a term coined for a group of reefs supported by many. The deployment of the Tug Singleton will be known as the Blake Charron Foundation Reef. MMS performed the cleanup and all ship movements to meet USCG specifications. Marine Environmental Services assisted in the cleanup of the tug. Scuba Diving International performed the pre-deployment inspections to ensure that no biological (e.g. natural hard bottoms) or archaeological (e.g. shipwrecks) were impacted. Summerlin’s Marine Construction raised funds for the deployment through the Summerlin Fish Fry held at the Little Jim Bait and Tackle. The event was promoted by the Marine Cleanup Initiative, Inc. (MCII) which raised awareness of the Tug Singleton and the nautical heritage of St. Lucie County. The United States Coast Guard, FWC, and St. Lucie County Sheriff ’s Office also contributed to the safety of the deployment as MCII’s promotion resulted in 26 boats and an airplane coming out to view the deployment. As always, the deployment could not have occurred without the support of the

St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners. Site selection for the Tug Singleton was based on potential for recruiting ivory tree corals and providing habitat for adult gamefish. The Singleton was deployed within a quarter mile of the USS Muliphen, a 468-foot amphibious attack cargo ship. Ivory tree corals have been found growing on the Muliphen. These corals provide spawning habitat for deep water fish species such as gag and scamp, which have also been found on the Muliphen. Other sportfish, including Warsaw grouper and sailfish have also been caught on the Muliphen. It is hoped that proximity to the Muliphen will provide these species with additional habitat. A recent South Atlantic Fishery Management Council ruling approved Executive Order 13921, promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth, which combats illegal fishing, and removes unnecessary regulations and permitting. The executive order also allows shrimp trawling inside the Oculina Banks, a series of protected oculina coral reefs far offshore in waters greater than 200 feet deep. Although this trawling would be of great initial benefit to the rock shrimp industry, trawling near oculina corals could negatively impact fishes spawning on these reefs. Loss of fish spawning aggregations would be devastating to local and regional fisheries, according to a group of at least 24 academic institutions, research organizations, and nongovernmental authorities who are struggling to

keep the protections for the Oculina Banks. This group includes Florida Atlantic University, Florida Oceanographic Society, Florida State University, the Nature Conservancy, the Ocean Resources and Conservation Association, Pew Trusts, and more. Loss of the fishes spawned on the Oculina Banks could have a devastating effect on the sportfish recruiting to the Treasure Coast. The Marine Cleanup Initiative, Inc. is spearheading a petition to keep the Oculina Banks protected and more signatures will be needed. Quickie to Launch the 2020/2021 Treasure Coast Sailfish Tournament Season

ish Heads of Stuart has announced the dates for its sixth annual Quickie, Nov. 29-Dec 1, which will launch the Treasure Coast’s approaching 2021-2022 sailfish tournament season. Center stage for the will be the Stuart Sailfish Marina/ Fish Heads of Stuart Pavilion on the Manatee Pocket. “The Quickie is a ‘shout out’ to our predecessor. For years, the ‘Quickie’ has been a tournament crowd favorite and we think it fitting to keep this

event in the forefront of the Treasure Coast’s sailfish tournaments,” said Brent Kane, owner of Fish Heads of Stuart. Sticking with Stuart’s tradition, the Quickie is a dead bait/conventional reel tournament. Setting the Quickie apart from other tournaments, however, is its angler-friendly format, hook and hand – no problem. This is a fun, easy-to-fish, two-day tournament. Entry fee is $1,300 per boat and

includes six anglers and six tickets to the awards dinner on Dec. 1. All activities and events take place at the Sailfish Marina/Fish Heads of Stuart pavilion, located at 3586 S.E. St. Lucie Blvd., Stuart, FL 34997. Tournament prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place finishers. was always destined to be a fisherman. I recall watching childhood heroes fishing exotic places on Saturday morning fishing shows and dreaming I would be one of the fortunate anglers to make experiences like those a reality. I watched Flip Pallot fly fishing the Everglades. I saw legendary Capt. Billy Black on the deck of the Duchess off Walker’s Cay. For a young man from up North, Florida was Mecca if your passion was sportfishing. Imagine the excitement when my wife and I had the opportunity to make a life-changing move. It was only natural that we chose Florida. We wanted somewhere with mild winters and a small-town feeling that was close enough to major attractions. We decided the Jensen Beach/Stuart area was perfect. Not to mention that Billy Black and the Duchess call Stuart home. I have since met this man. He is not only a great captain and fisherman, he is a very genuine and kind man. The fishing is all that I imagined. Lake Okeechobee is a short drive to the west, the Florida Keys are just a few hours south, and the Indian River Lagoon is our new backyard. The Treasure Coast has wonderful offshore fishing, where mahi and sailfish are much sought after. The annual glass minnow run sends anglers roaming beaches in search of tarpon and snook. Most days it does not disappoint. If you turn on the television during “Shark Week,” you’ll undoubtably see mention of the shark migration through South Florida. It boggles the mind just how many sharks cruise the waters here. But, the granddaddy of them all is the “mullet run.” There are very few area anglers who don’t await this time of year like a youngster on the night before Christmas. The Indian River Lagoon comes alive, as everything eagerly devours this bountiful baitfish. This area has a wide variety of quality fishing, something for everyone, regardless of target species. The Indian River Lagoon needs no introduction. This world-class fishery has a long and storied reputation and is on the bucket list of any person dreaming of snook, trout and redfish. When the topic of Mosquito Lagoon comes up, visions of monster redfish and goliath trout come to mind. The IRL produced one of the most impressive catches in recent history when in 1995 angler Craig Carson, of Orlando, caught the heaviest spotted seatrout ever recorded. The 17-pound, 7-ounce beast was pulled from a backwater cove in Fort Pierce. It’s been a few years since we made the move to follow my dreams of fishing. The Treasure Coast has certainly lived up to its name. I cherish every outing in this beautiful and diverse environment. And, even after all the years, after all the places I have been fortunate to visit, I still have species left on my bucket list. I can think of no better place to pursue those fish than Florida. WC reopened recreational harvest of snook, redfish and spotted seatrout in Tampa Bay on Oct. 12. REGS CHANGING FOR ATLANTIC SPOT/CROAKER

t its October meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved the creation of new regulations for spot and Atlantic croaker in state waters from the Florida-Georgia border through Miami-Dade County. The following changes for the Atlantic coast of Florida will go into effect Dec. 1, 2021: • Establish a daily recreational bag limit of 50 fish per person for each species. • Establish the following commercial vessel limits Spot: 2,200 pounds. Atlantic croaker: 1,200 pounds. There have been recent coast-wide declines in abundance and harvest of spot and Atlantic croaker. The approved changes are part of a coast-wide, multi-state conservation strategy for Atlantic stocks of these species.

LIFE IS A BEACH November is a Great Month for Beach Fishing By Richard Matteson

ooling weather and longer nights make November one of the hottest beach fishing months of the year. Early November still features the occasional late run of mullet trying to catch up with the main waves that already moved through. Yes, the mullet runs are mostly in October, but warmer weather patterns have extended the runs into November. Look for birds and bait. There are many beach accesses in Martin and St. Lucie counties. If fishing on the Treasure Coast, try different beach accesses between the St. Lucie and Ft. Peirce inlets. Deeper water beach areas have been producing bigger and more fish. Some of the deeper water accesses are Bathtub Beach (walk to the inlet point), Tiger Shores, Walton Rocks and Ft. Pierce Inlet point. Either side of high tide seems to be best (incoming high or outgoing high). There are still lots of tarpon schooling and large snook, and the bite is hot the whole month. In midDecember and January, the patterns change and both snook and tarpon are harder to catch. Try freelining a 6- to 8-inch mullet or croaker just past the trough and working the outside of the trough during the day. Early morning or evening, fish are closer to the shore and use the trough as their bait freeway. The trough

is a deep channel carved out by the closest waves (first breakers) and is usually 1 or 2 feet deeper than the sand line. For large fish, use 20- to 40-pound braid (white) with a 40-pound fluorocarbon leader. Besides freelining live bait, try using a jig with a 4-inch paddletail or a silver crocodile-style spoon (1 oz.). Yo-Zuri shallowdiving crankbaits (white) and topwater (Zara Spook/Skitterwalk) will also work for schooling fish chasing bait. November is also the month when mackerel, pompano and bluefish begin their southward migration. They start showing up around the mullet run, and by the end of November are regularly caught off our beaches. Mackerel and bluefish like shiny fast-moving lures like spoons, while bluefish can also be caught on cut bait. Both have teeth, so be prepared to have your leader cut! Pompano usually can best be caught on live sand fleas or red Fishbites. The mackerel bite is best in a small boat around the inlets or in the bull-shark reef area, but surf fishermen can have hot mackerel action, too. In the morning, the bite is usually near the trough when bait is present. Later in the day, make long casts with silver or gold spoons. Good luck! olor mutations occur in a variety of wildlife species—albino whitetail deer, black (melanistic) coyotes and yes, piebald catfish. To witness, and especially catch, one of those unique creatures, however, is rare. Yet it happened recently for Rocco Mansueto on the Tennessee River. Mansueto was fishing in late September with Capt. Joe Jellison, a guide working with Scenic City Fishing Charters in Chattanooga, Tenn. Capt. Jellison also produces the popular YouTube Channel, Chatt Cats Fishing. Capt. Jellison routinely fishes on the Tennessee River near Chattanooga. His clients had already enjoyed a successful day, including a 27-pound blue caught by Rocco’s brother, Phillip, when Rocco hooked up again on a respectable catfish. When they fought the fish close enough to the boat to see it, Capt. Jellison, who has boated thousands of catfish, said he was awestruck. “Piebald catfish are quite rare. There’s one-in-a-million chance of getting one,” said Capt. Jellison. “They are actually blue catfish with a genetic mutation. I told Rocco many (or most) fishermen will fish their whole life and not catch a piebald catfish.” Piebaldism is the absence of melanin-forming cells (melanocytes) in certain areas of the skin. It is different from albinism, where all cells lack the ability to produce pigment altogether. Hence, piebald creatures do not have the pink eye characteristic of albinos. The piebald gene is often hereditary. Another Scenic City Fishing guide, Capt. Sam Simons, caught a similar fish in 2019. While it appeared to be a totally white albino, it did not have the characteristic pink eye, hence was probably a piebald as well. At the time of the catch, Capt. Jellison was drifting chicken breast as bait in the Tennessee River current, what Scenic City guides refer to as their “light tackle technique.” They use standard spinning gear and relatively light line (10-pound mono or 20-pound braid), which allows the bait to drift more naturally. Even though they use light tackle, the technique sometimes produces big catfish—up to 50 and 60 pounds. However, trophy-sized catfish are not as rare, or as cherished, as a once-in-a-lifetime piebald. Mansueto released his rare piebald catfish back into the river in hopes someone else might someday have the same experience he did. 719-POUNDER WINS BLUEFIN BONANZA L ocal captain Pete Speeches, of Scarborough, Maine, and the crew of Backstabber, brought a giant 719-pound bluefin tuna to the scale to win the Third Annual Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza out of South Portland, Maine. They took home their second consecutive Casco Bay Cup. It was a fretful year for the Bonanza, as proposed restricted fishing days threatened to scuttle the event. Then, an 11th-hour category closure forced postponement of the three-day tournament from early August to early September. Despite the tremendous inconvenience to all, and a less-than-favorable forecast, the boats set out and didn’t disappoint. First to the dock on Day 1 was Endorfin with a 511-pounder. Keith Jordan, of the Bailey and Bella, quickly set the bar higher with a fat tuna that weighed 700 pounds on the nose. Speeches was hot on his tail, arriving at the scales just 20 minutes later with what would eventually prove to be the tournament winner. He was preceded by Mitch Napalitano’s 598-pounder, moving Mitch down to a third-place position, at least temporarily. Perennial frontrunner Kurt Christensen and the Molly Jane came in with a 373-pounder with Wasabi, High Anxiety and Lion’s den bringing in fish of 478, 311 and 440 pounds, respectively. Forecasted high winds and thunder showers kept many boats off the water on Day 2, but Backstabber—vying for the cumulative-weight prize—landed their second, a 467-pounder followed by Bailey & Bella’s 582-pounder. Bounty

Hunter II, one of the smaller boats in the tournament went way offshore and after a five-hour battle managed to wrangle in a 422-pounder, and made the scales before they closed. Despite challenging conditions, the crew of Molly Jane showed their mettle, bringing in a 632-pounder to open Day 3 that would ultimately hold up in the top five. Hot on their heels was Bailey & Bella with a 646-pounder that would take fourth place and secure the overall cumulative weight. The final fish was ANUT’s 698-pounder, which moved them back into third place. In the end, over $18,000 in prize money was handed out, including a top prize of $7,500 and the Casco Cup for the largest fish. More importantly, the Bluefin Bonanza raised enough money to ensure that 14 students, two from each of Maine’s seven community colleges, will receive scholarships next year. The Bonanza will also be able to fulfill their endowment to the Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, ensuring there will always be scholarships in the future. Furthermore, a new endowment will be established with the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to support vital bluefin tuna research that will ensure the resource and the fishery remain sustainable.
