he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. S
alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. O
f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. e’ve all seen the red tide events that hammer fish on Florida’s Gulf Coast. In February, stockings of redfish began to ease the pain of fish kills on resident populations. Duke Energy, FWC and CCA Florida began the release of more than 16,000 juvenile and adult redfish in southwest Florida counties. The program was announced in fall of 2018, and includes donation of the hatchery-reared redfish from the Duke Energy Mariculture Center in Crystal River, Fla. Each of five releases include about 2,000 juvenile fish and 25 to 30 adult redfish. Stockings were scheduled for Pasco County, Hillsborough County, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, Lee and Collier counties and Manatee County. “We’re extremely excited to begin releasing these fish now that the waters are determined to be safe,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “Between these releases, encouraging anglers to catch-and-release and promoting conservation, we’re going to see this fishery improve, and we’re honored to be a part of it.” Anglers can become engaged by joining CCA Florida at JoinCCA. org.

he Backcountry Fishing Association’s second tournament of the 2019 season, held on Feb. 2 fishing out of Little Jim Fish Camp in Fort Pierce, had a turnout 45 boats, beautiful weather, and a total of 29 trout and 19 redfish brought to the scales. Collin Willis and Darren Frost stole the show with a 5.51-pound trout and a 4.79-pound redfish. With a combined weight of 10.30 pounds, the duo took first-place, earning $843.75 for their fishing efforts, along with an additional $220.00 for the trout Calcutta. Tony Vercillo and TJ Kiefer scored themselves second-place with a 4-pound trout and a 4.34-pound redfish. With a total weight of 8.34 pounds, this team walked away with $506.25. New members Charles and Staci Ludwig took third-place with a 2.86-pound trout and a 5.19-pound

armer winds, calmer seas and great variety is what this March is all about. Coming off a late sailfish season, expect sail fishing to continue to be good this March, April and probably even into May and June. The dolphin fishing has been improving since early February and should continue to throughout this month and into summer. Bottom fishing is starting to really kick off now too with cobia and snapper being the most soughtafter species along the reef. Although I usually troll dead bait, the live bait is here, and this is a great time of year to use it. Even when I’m going to catch it myself, I usually stop and buy some from
Brian and Michael as I’m leaving the Pocket just to be safe and also expedite the process. If you’re going to catch it yourself, be sure to stop in to one of the local tackle shops and purchase one or two of my son Thatcher’s Off the Hook de-hookers. You can currently get them at Snook Nook, Fish Heads, Offshore Tackle Repair, and Whites. It’s way better for the bait and, also prevents you from hooking yourself with those flesh magnets they call Sabiki rigs. Also, be sure you stock up on plenty of bait if it’s easy. The kingfish bite has been pretty good inshore and there are also a lot of bonito around too, worst case,

live chumming works well as the day is coming to an end. March is also when I start using my Cannons as downriggers instead of just dredge reels too. Obviously when fishing structure they are a huge asset, but as the water warms up, some of the fish like to stay in the deeper cooler water. Kings and wahoo are a given, but cobia, sails and mahi are regular victims of the down bait too. This is also a great time of year to target swordfish. The daytime fishery
is incredible and not only are the fish usually larger, but you can actually see them and what they are doing as you fight them. Daytime swordfish trips also give you a great chance at a sailfish, some mahi or even a marlin along with some extremely rare and extraordinary species on the sword bait making these trips some of the more exciting trips you can do. he water is warming up and along with it comes lots of bait and feeding frenzies! The early spring is my favorite time of year because we still have cool mornings with low daytime humidity and mostly calm seas. The “pilchard” baitfish start showing up in March along the beaches and inshore conveniently near the boat ramps for some reason. When looking to cast net them, look for “raindrops” on the surface. Turn all motors off (especially trolling motor) and simply drift in the current with your cast net ready. Look for any “slaps” or small splashes on the surface and throw your cast net. I use a 10-foot,
3/8-inch mesh cast net. Pilchards are “diving” baits that don’t require weights to get them down near the bottom. Therefore, all you need to rig is a size 4/0- 6/0 circle hook with a 10-foot 40-pound leader. I use Mustad or Gamakatsu circle hooks with a “bent eye” for tying a snell knots. I find we make more successful hooksets when using that rig. The bridges and docks are always a good place to pitch baits for snook and occasional redfish. Throughout February, we also caught lots of these fish casting “Giles Jigs” at the mangrove shorelines far back in St. Lucie River. Early spring is a great time to try for cobia at the “Sandpile” located three miles straight out the inlet. We first chum up sharks close to the boat, and then pitch weighted baitfish far from the boat and let it sink and swing down under the sharks to the cobia. March is also a good month to drive north up the coastline to the “Boils” of the Nuclear Power Plant to catch tarpon and permit using 2-to-3-inch live crabs. There are many opportunities while cruising to the “Boils” early morning to find

bait or rolling tarpon along the beaches so have a rod ready! It’s definitely still pompano season and a good time to use chicken rigs in deep spots of the channel near the Crossroads, Pecks Lake, and inlets. The pompano are showing up on the Sailfish Flats and we catch them with Gulfstream’s “High Jinks” Jigs live shrimp on a jig head or sand fleas near the inlet. Simply cast up current and tap the bottom to kick up sand.

he roar of winter winds flavored by the Florida sun, will continue to shape the offshore seascape this March. The continued arrival of cold fronts that possess high velocity winds will be no surprise and are typical for the inaugural days of this month. "Fintastic" snapper fishing will continue to prevail through the days of March and will highlight the diversity of bottom dwelling fish that can be caught among the many reefs, wrecks, and snags that lay beneath the offshore waters of Martin County. Lane snapper will still be posted up on near shore reefs and artificial structures in 50 to 60 feet of water and will land in big numbers on fish box ice, again this month. Sturdy mangrove snapper will also be present in a similar zone and on structures out to 90 feet of water. Mutton snapper

So, with this in mind, keep a mindful eye on the weather and be prepared for when a user-friendly window does open. Using forecast savvy web pages like Windfinder. com can help with planning for an offshore fishing trip for a particular week. Weather friendly windows of opportunity will lead to a colorful bounty of snapper during this offshore calendar month and will also have the potential to host a flurry of cobia activity, as hungry cobes glide through our zone during the fishy days of March.

arch always comes in like a lion! You can expect windy days, but much warmer as we transition into spring. Chances of rain are on the increase so watch the weather and plan your adventures carefully. Water temps will be on the rise this month and you can expect lots of exciting
action around the Treasure Coast. Trout will be moving onto the shallow grass flats as the sun warms things up. Try a D.O.A. Deadly Combo or live shrimp on a popping cork to locate trout. A D.O.A. C.A.L. will also work well this month. Look for redfish to be around mangroves and docks. A D.O.A. shrimp is always a good choice for reds. Sheepshead, drum and snapper will be along channel edges and docks and willing to take a live shrimp. Snook fishing will pick up around the inlets, bridges and docks. Live pilchards are a favorite bait in March. Mackerel, bluefish, jacks and many other predators will be coming in with the tides and feeding around the inlets and channels of the river. Small shiny lures work best for these fish. Pompano are in the river and along the surf and willing to take
a Doc’s Goofy Jig, shrimp or sand flea. They usually can be found in channels and deeper parts of the flats in March. We have had great success on croakers the past few years. There will be nice sized fish in the river and along the beaches feeding with whiting. They are fun to catch and super to eat! Spring is almost here already. Winter wasn’t so bad even though we complain about it. It’s a good time to check equipment. Both fishing and the boat should be checked a few times a year to make sure everything is in good working order. Some of these windy days will provide a good chance to check rods, reels and safety gear for when good weather arrives. Have a great March in 2019. he first days of spring are upon us along with the spring equinox on March 20th, making March an unpredictable month as far as the weather goes. Snapper fishing will continue to be intense and fulfilling all through March, and various species of snapper will be posted up on wrecks, reefs and ledges throughout St. Lucie County offshore. If you are looking to land a personal best snapper, March is the time to make the wish come true. Not only have the mangroves and greys been putting on the pounds,

the mutton snappers are excited to flex their big-boy muscles. We recommend fishing in depths of 70-to-90-feet with a 20-pound monofilament setup and using live pilchard or pinfish as bait. March will also bring cobia back to our shores. These social

and high-quality table fare. So, keep your eyes peeled for the massive black rays to glide by because odds are that riding “shotgun” will be a cobia or two or three. Keep your bottom gear beefed up for the large snappers and a pitch rod with some back bone on it ready to go when the cobia pass by. Once hooked up with either of these species, be prepared to hold onto your hat and listen to the drag scream. Once landing a green cobia remember these guys are testy and will put a beating on the boat and anything in its path. Find your window and take advantage of phenomenal deepsea dynamics that this month offers. With the weather being unpredictable, we recommend a bigger boat! arch is here and the cobia will be too. With cooling water temperatures that have moved into our area, cobia will also be coming into the waters off the Treasure Coast. When the weather allows, and you can get outside the inlets, it is a great time to target cobia. Cobia is an awesome fighting fish and one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. These fish will be found from just off the beach on out to 80 to 90 feet depths. There are various ways to find cobia. They follow manta rays, swim behind turtles, and swim with sharks or with bait schools. On days with westerly winds or if there are days with light to no wind, you will be able to sight fish cobia. Look for manta rays or turtles and cast behind them to see if there is cobia following them. I recommend having someone stand

he inshore bite for redfish should be good in the deeper holes up around Jack Island and Queen's Cove. Try a D.O.A. Bait Buster or a live shrimp fished under a popping cork. As the day warms
up, the redfish will come up onto the flats and take the same baits. The trout fishing should remain good as long as the water temps don't drop too much more. For trout, free line a live pilchard or a live shrimp under a popping cork. The snook action in the turning basin and the Fort Pierce Inlet will be good when using pinfish or pigfish and fish them on the bottom. The tide changes will be your best time to fish. Around the local bridges the snapper, black drum and sheepshead are all taking live shrimp, clams or a piece of cut bait. There should still be plenty of mackerel, bluefish and jacks working their way in the Fort Pierce Inlet as they follow the bait schools. The pompano bite should be good in the surf when using clams or sand fleas along with some whiting and croakers.

The list of readily available gamefish species expands to include leftover winter migrants, resident species and the first of the warm water species arriving from their wintering grounds to take advantage of the abundant food sources in the Indian River Lagoon and nearshore waters. and redfish are the main target of lagoon anglers in March. From the backwaters to the spoil islands, trout of all sizes can keep anglers busy. Redfish and snook are also available and will generally stay close to shoreline cover. A four-inch D.O.A. Cal jerk-bait on an ⅛-ounce head is a great all-around lure to target everything that swims in the lagoon in March. Live shrimp fished below a small float will be hard to beat under the right conditions or if you find a concentration of fish. Wade fishing will give anglers an edge and March is probably the best month to employ this tactic. There should be action fishing for ladyfish, jacks, blues and small trout around islands, drop-offs, and the channels and flats behind Sebastian Inlet.
Sebastian Inlet – Sebastian Inlet continues to produce some snook since the February 1 season opening. The early part of the spring snook season at the inlet can be hit or miss and is very dependent on water temps. Big jack crevalle, redfish, bluefish, pompano, Spanish mackerel, black drum and sheepshead are also available to inlet anglers in March. Near Shore Atlantic – The
waters from the beach on out a few miles can be very productive in March if the winds allow boaters and surf fishermen the opportunity to fish them. Surf fishermen target pompano, bluefish and mackerel as they begin their northern migration. Boaters can do the same and keep an eye out for cruising cobia and large schools of double-digit jack crevalle. Sharks, bonito and king mackerel can also join the beach party in late March. The springtime weather is great, and the opportunities are many in the paradise that is Sebastian. Tight lines!

M
arch is a great month for offshore fishing out of Sebastian. The first couple weeks of the month are always a good bet for catching the cobia run. Cobia fishing specialists will watch the water temperature and listen for reports of cobes and manta rays. Pick a day when the sky is clear, and the seas are glassy for your best shot at sight fishing for the brown bombers. The cobia generally move north along the coast as the water warms. Often, cooler water temps to the north (below 65 degrees) will put the cobes in a holding pattern between Fort Pierce and Cape Canaveral. The area midway between Sebastian and Cape Canaveral is always a good bet. Look for bait pods, temperature breaks and subtle weed lines in the 40 to 80 feet range. Spend some time looking at sea surface temperature charts the day before a cobia hunting
trip. The fish will often be near that temperature break in the mid-60s. Cobia anglers will sight fish for hours looking for the brown fish cruising just under the surface. The payoff is watching a group of cobias charge a lure and experiencing the “fire-drill” that ensues. Try cobia jigs or big swim baits and increase the retrieve when a fish charges. Wait until the fish is pointed away from you before setting the hook. Jigs will need an especially hard set in order to move the jig in that abrasive mouth. Set your drag heavy enough for the hookset. A push of big mahi is always a good bet in March also. Water temp is especially important in finding the fish. Look for the frigate birds that have been frequenting our water lately. Try to get out there in that mid-70s water if you can. There will also be blackfins, sails, wahoo, kings and others caught on the troll, in the cooler water so don’t be too fixated on water temp. Drifting a couple greenies along a color change in that 180-foot range is always a good investment of time. Sometimes the trolled baits just don’t get it done. Bottom fishing will continue to be solid this month. Grouper and red snapper are out of season but mangrove snapper, muttons, lanes,

sea bass, triggerfish, and cobia will be on the menu. Be ready for that free-swimming cobia while running around bottom fishing. Always have a cobia jig tied on and a live bait rig if the jig gets snubbed. Sometimes a nice fresh piece of bait will make the difference between a big fish and a cobia snubbing. Cut blue runner is great along with a whole squid or a big frozen shrimp Kingfish fishing will continue to be solid this month. Keep a live bait or a frozen sardine freelined while
bottom fishing. The kings will need a small wire leader. Target them by slow trolling and drifting over the reefs or adjacent to areas where the commercial king boats are working. Note the depth the kings are showing on the sonar and add some weight as necessary. Often, the kings are stubborn about rising up to eat especially at mid-day and high boat traffic areas. Best of luck out there and get out and enjoy those beautiful spring days before they’re gone!

arch can be windy but don't let the wind keep you from going fishing. I'm a big fan of having some wind. That is normally one of the first things I check before going fishing is what direction it is blowing from and how strong is it. Being in the river and having some wind blowing in your face will sometimes bring the bait fish and bigger fish around. And being on the beach with east wind will normally push the pods of fish closer to shore. When I am river fishing in March, I normally try targeting bigger sea trout and quality size snook. When I am beach fishing in March, I am normally looking for some bait fish coming down the coast with some bigger predator fish right behind

them, such as tarpon, sharks, jacks and snook. It is pretty hard to beat getting a big mullet and letting him swim out into the middle of all the action. Or, you could toss big topwater lures, such as the Savage Gear Panic Pray Topwater in the eight-inch model. Also, a good choice is the Live Target Mullet or Herring. On the beach, you definitely want to bring your big rods because some

INSHORE — Spring is in the air. Snook, redfish and trout will still be along mangroves and in between docks. Focus your time on points in the mangrove line and docks with the most current. Throwing D.O.A. shad tails and jerk baits will work well matching the hatch of glass minnows in the water. Launching your kayak inside Jonathan Dickinson State Park will put you in line with fishing some productive docks and mangroves. This is one of the better times to also target tripletail. Look to find them

Look for an outgoing tide with mild windy conditions in the river for good success. And on the beach look for higher tides with an onshore wind. Offshore — Fishing will start
to pick up this month with larger kingfish and more mahi swimming through. The sailfish bite will continue to be good as well. Cobia in March has always been good for us. These fish will start to move from the beach to the reef line. Fishing Jupiter to Delray Beach reefs bouncing the bottom with jigs, sardines and pilchards are your best bets. Off the Treasure Coast, hit places like the Sandpile and look for free swimming rays and sharks. Put your time in and you should find a few. Finally, if you want some nonstop action, the Spanish mackerel will still be in full force at Pecks Lake just off the beach in Stuart. What Leaders to Fish & Where
River: 9-feet/ 20-pound, cut off 1-to-2 foot and tie aligned in dimension. Use four turns to maximize on your tippet. Most of the time I use 2-to-4 foot strength. 15-pound to 30-pound Seaguar pink or blue label.
Flats: 12-feet / 20-pound, cut off 2 foot and tie

• Balance the leader and tippet to the fly size. on your tippet, usually 12-pound to 30-pound (20-pound leader with a 3/0 fly is not good!) Fluorocarbon. If the fly is heavy, shorten the tippet • Balance the rod weight in relation to the tippet. a bit. If I use a finer leader (20-pound or 25-pound tippet), I like to fish my smaller rods (6-weight instead of my Docks / Dock Lights / Bridges: 6-feet Ande 8-weight). • You can strip the leader all the way in to your pink 30-pound or 40-pound and Seaguar 25-pound to 40-pound. If I go just for the big girls, I use rod tip. It is necessary, especially from the boat, for 40-pound Ande pink with a 60-pound Seaguar pink keeping a small rod angel towards the fish to keep the pressure on the fish. ivers should expect weather conditions to become increasingly more favorable as the frequent cold fronts of January and February begin to subside. More opportunities to head offshore should allow divers to make the most of the last few weeks of lobster season before it closes at the end of the month. Passing fronts typical of wintertime in Florida may churn the shallow water close to shore, but after a few days of calm conditions, this turbidity settles down and clear water returns quickly. Scouting drops to determine visibility are a good idea since visibility reports can be limited this time of year and the following tips may help. First, pause at the mouth of the inlet to check if your able to

see the bottom. If the water is clear in the inlet, especially at high tide this is a good indicator near-shore reefs have decent vis. If the water is murky or the tides going out, head offshore to check spots a few miles out. Short ‘bounce dives’ on the Titan Tug/Six Mile Reef out of Stuart
or some of the 60-foot reefs out of Fort Pierce are another quick way to determine conditions. If the water is murky at these spots, head south and farther offshore to get closer to the Gulf Stream’s clear waters; if vis is good, consider going north to areas less often dove. A quick note about
bounce dives: even though they are short, all safe, normal dive practices should be followed just like all dives. This should include following a safe ascent rate and even doing a safety stop, especially if the day’s plan calls for repetitive diving. When visibility cooperates, lobster hunters know March is the last month to stock up before the season closes at the end of the month. Lobster should be everywhere since fewer divers have been able to make it offshore due to the challenging ocean conditions of the past few months. Bag limits should be very easy to come by! Divers may notice an increase in the number of eggbearing female lobster since the breeding season starts soon. The bright orange eggs are easy to spot but are sometimes overlooked so divers are wise to double-check the underside of the tail for eggs, especially this time of year. Pregnant female lobsters are easy to identify also since they usually keep their tail curled up, protecting the eggs underneath. Care should be taken to avoid unnecessary damage to females during capture in order to increase their chances of survival and release of their offspring. Consider a snare or ‘lobster looper’ to avoid breaking off antennae and legs.

Redfish, trout and snook (seasonal) are the qualified species. Anglers attempt to bring one legal fish of each species to the scales for weigh in and live release. Teams must participate in at least five tournaments to be eligible to fish the Classic which is a two-day event. The top five eligible teams with the highest accumulated points from the season are given a bye from day one. The remaining eligible teams compete on an elimination basis the first day, where only the top five teams of day one progress to day two to compete against the season point leaders for the grand prize and cash for the top four teams. Membership fees are $25 for the year. To enter the tournament each month, the fee is $60 per team. The third tournament of the series will take place on Saturday, March 2, with the captain’s meeting on Friday, March 1.

eployment of the Indian Hills Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) Oyster Reef began this year in early February. On January 30, volunteers from the St. Lucie County 4-H Council created another 136 modules for use on the reef. Staking of the deployment area was completed by a surveying crew from Dredging and Marine Consultants, Engineers, and Scientists (DMCES) during the first week of February and 620 modules were staged at the area by St. Lucie County and volunteers from MMPS, Environmental. A deployment day was called by the St. Lucie County 4-H Council on February 9. The 4-H Council and several other volunteers deployed 620 modules for a total of 225 square feet of oyster reef. The reef has been supported by the Indian River Lagoon Council and the St. Lucie Board of County Commissioners. Recent rainfall has led to renewed flow through the Indian Hills Stormwater Treatment Area outfall, creating a tidal creek that, if stabilized
properly to prevent future sand movement, will provide additional fish habitat. If not stabilized, shifting sediments will prevent seagrass recolonization. Continued scouring by water released from the outfall can also reduce seagrasses in the area. Shoreline stabilization will be addressed by DMCES and may require some combination of marsh grass planting and filling of the scour hole next to the outfall. In other regions of Florida and the United States, tidal creeks provide juvenile habitat for species such as crevalle jack (Caranx hippos), flounder (Paralichthys spp.), black drum (Pogonius cromis), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), and both white shrimp (Penaeus setiferis) and brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus). Growth of these juveniles is enhanced by nutrients in marsh vegetation, including cordgrass (Spartina spp.) and bulrush (Scirpus spp.). As one progresses further south to warmer climates, mangroves (forested wetlands) rather than marsh plants help the transfer of nutrients to fish.

Eastern Terminus of Tidal Creek at Indian Hills.
In the 1920s, many of the tidal creeks in St. Lucie County were disconnected from the Indian River Lagoon through creation of mosquito control impoundments. Through the practice of rotational impoundment management (RIM), these tidal creeks are now seasonally reconnected to the Indian River Lagoon by the St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District. In 2015 the District documented 49 species of fish and crustaceans, including Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), common snook (Centropomus undecimalis), mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus), red drum

(Scianops ocellatus), and spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) in one impoundment after reconnecting that impoundment with the Indian River Lagoon. Progress continues on fundraising for the deployment of the 180foot freighter, Voici Bernadette, for artificial reefing on St. Lucie County’s deepwater artificial reef site. Already cleaned and prepared for reefing, this ship is docked at the Summerlin Dock in Fort Pierce while fundraising is occurring. So far more than $78,000 has been raised for the cleaning and deployment with monies coming from the U.S. Customs and Border
Protection Agency, the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, St. Andrews Episcopal Academy, Derecktor Shipyards, Last Mango Fishing Charters, Haygar Enterprises and others. Use of the ship as an educational tool continues. Groups from the Harbour Isles Condominium and St. Andrews toured the vessel in February. Central to this education is the interdependence of inshore and offshore fish habitats in the propagation of fish stocks. Many fish species found on St. Lucie County’s artificial reefs spend part of their life history in the Indian River Lagoon.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection Facility at Martin County Airport Now Open
U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility at the Martin County Airport officially opened on February 11.
M
artin County Board of County Commissioners announced the opening of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Facility at Martin County Airport. Customs, officially opening its doors to aircraft and marine vessels on February 11 and receiving its first customer by air at 11:55 a.m. that morning. “It’s truly exciting,” said Sam Carver, Martin County Airport Manager. “This allows Martin County boaters, pilots, residents and visitors to conveniently clear customs without having to travel to Fort Pierce or West Palm Beach,” Mr.

Carver continued. The 3,200 square foot facility is operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection with regular operating hours Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Customers may contact Customs at (772) 210-0420 during regular operating hours and after hours at (772) 210-0797. Procedures for pilots and boaters as well as user fees can be found at https://www.martin.fl.us/Customs. The U.S. Customs Facility at the Martin County Airport, Witham Field, is the first intermodal clearance facility of its kind built
in Florida. This facility allows Martin County boaters, pilots, residents and visitors to conveniently clear U.S. Customs without having to travel to Fort Pierce or West Palm Beach. This project began in September of 2010 during the Airport Master Planning process with the Martin County Board of County Commissioners. Funding for the project was provided through an 80/20 grant partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation Aviation (Multimodal) Division and the Airport Enterprise Fund.

Spring Fishing in the Lagoon
W
hen the water temperatures rise, the large slot snook that have been wintering around the inlets, the deep water in the channels and under the bridges will start heading to the shallow water. Already the snook bite is good for under-slot snook in the South Fork where good numbers have been consistently reported on 4-inch shad tail (paddletail) jigs, 1/8-ounce in shallow water around the mangroves and bridges. Improved water quality both in fall and winter from less dumping of water from Lake Okeechobee and the canals has temporarily increased visibility, but the grass has been gone from most areas of the lagoon except for some areas around Bear Point (Fort Pierce) and Vero Beach. Without grass and improved water quality, the future of fishing in the lagoon and St. Lucie River is jeopardized and already in decline. Pompano, mackerel and bluefish are still on the flats in three-to-five-feet of water and are caught off the two Stuart Bridges on small jigs, pompano jigs, and artificial colored baits. Redfish have been reported on the west side of the lagoon north of the Jensen Beach Causeway to the power lines in Fort Pierce using jigs and D.O.A. shrimp fished slowly around piers and mangroves on high tide. I usually fish with lures but using live shrimp on a small weighted jig-head, caught seven sheepshead, two lane snapper, and two mutton snapper fishing the rock piles in 12 foot of water around the St Lucie Inlet. The trick is anchoring or slowing the drift down with your trolling motor and bouncing the jig off the bottom. The standard rig that I use when wading is 8-pound white braid with a 2-foot clear 20-pound fluorocarbon leader. The 1/8 jig is tied with a loop knot and rigged with a pearl white or silver sparkle 4-inch paddle tail. I use several retrieves and vary the speed depending on the target fish. For trout and redfish, I use a slow speed and have good contact with the bottom. Trailer Inspection Tips for the Spring Boating Season T
he weather has finally given in, spring is almost here, with summer right around the corner, and we will be spending more time “on the road” to get to the water. Before doing so, make sure to check out your boat trailer and make sure you are up-to-date with the requirements and safety issues. • Brakes. If you have a doubleaxle, or tandem as it’s called, the law says you must have working brakes on all wheels. If you’re bound for the
Keys or plan to drive a distance, make absolutely sure all brakes are working properly. • Lights. Be sure your lights are working. Brake lights are especially important, along with directional lights. You don’t want to stop at a light and have someone run into the back of your boat. • Tires. Check for uneven wear and for heat cracks. Insuring proper tire pressure is an easy way to help keep heat cracking from happening.
Most standard tires in the 14-inch and 15-inch sizes should be kept at 52 psi . • Bearings. If you notice uneven tread wear on the inside or the outside, you may want to have your bearings checked. • Bunk carpet. Check to see if it is in good condition and stapled securely. If it is worn or torn, replace it. • Winch Strap. Be sure your winch strap is in good condition. You don’t want it breaking while your
loading the boat back on the trailer. Take a little time and look your trailer over carefully from front to back and side to side. CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND
MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton
T
he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.
Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
