Fishing Forecast with Freshwater

This is turning out to be one hot summer! Fishing for exotics this time of the year is great, and they cooperate early on, which means you don’t have to fish all day in the heat. I will start my days earlier in the summer and usually be off the water by 11A. There are also a special few hours at the end of the day, between 5:30-8:00P, that also can be very productive with minimal sun exposure.
This time of the year is perfect for skipping baits under docks and really getting to enjoy fishing that shallow structure. Peacock bass are just about the opposite of largemouth bass in their seasonal hangout zones. Peacocks love the warmer water and will sit up in the shallows, whereas LMB typically prefer to sit lower in the water column where the cooler water is. If you find yourself skipping docks and sight fishing for peacocks, I recommend a suspending lure that you can do long pauses without it floating up to the top of the water and out of the strike zone. If you find yourself fishing more lowlight situations or overcast days along sea walls and shallow banks, you can’t go wrong with a topwater Zara Spook Jr. or any other walking-style bait.
One thing I don’t talk about a lot is fishing small ponds. If you regularly fish a pond, you probably know most of the regularities of the pond and can usually catch fish. If you are new to pond fishing, I have always found it to be imperative to find ponds that have clean or sandy banks. Ones that are all covered up are tough to fish and makes sight fishing next to impossible. Most communities will drain their ponds to kill off the grass right at the bank, which is a perfect scenario to have a clean bank to fish from. When I fish a new pond, I usually bring three search baits to see if anyones home. A jerkbait is one of my all-time favorite lures, so I typically throw that first. Next, I’ll usually pick up a topwater or a deep diving crankbait, depending on how deep I think the pond is. My last bait, if the previous two didn’t get any bites, will be a micro finesse soft plastic bait imitating a grass shrimp or a minnow to see what smaller fish are in the pond and what they may be keyed in on.
Snakeheads have been very active with all the afternoon thunderstorms. They are all spawned out, so you can catch them on almost everything. My favorite method for catching snakeheads is on top water; however, anything from a chatter bait, spinner bait, or even live bait work well for snakeheads. If you can see a snakehead, you can catch it. Presentation is going to be the key to getting the bite. If I spot a snakehead, I cast way away from the fish and bring the bait to the fish in a regular manner. Slowing the bait down when the lure is right over that fish’s head may be why they don’t bite. Just try to keep everything consistent. Snakeheads also have eyes on the top of their heads, so they will usually see you before you see them.
Tight lines!

Only back two days and already missing the action so I went fishing. Caught this cow straight out-front Jupiter inlet and my biggest of the season! We truly live in fishing paradise.
