he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. O
f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. cott Christian of Alpharetta, Ga., released 262.5 inches of barracuda to win the fly division of the 2019 Cuda Bowl Tournament Feb. 2 in the Lower Florida Keys. Guided by Capt. John Benvenuto of Key West, Fla., he earned the title of divisional grand champion for the second consecutive year. Christian’s catches included the fly division’s largest individual barracuda, measuring 47.75 inches. Andrew Hunt of Marathon, Fla., won the Cuda Bowl’s spin division championship, releasing barracuda totaling 278.5 inches. He was guided by Capt. Chad Huff of Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament’s female grand champion was Julie Leeman of Tucson, Ariz., who released barracuda totaling 240.5 inches on spin tackle. She fished with Capt. Chris Leeman. Kai Decker of St. Augustine, Fla., earned the title of top junior angler. Guided by Capt. Mike O’Brien of Summerland Key, Fla., the 13-yearold released 124.5 inches of barracuda. The tournament’s Ben Gravett Memorial Team Trophy went to Florida anglers Bob Sellers of Sanford and Eddie Hunt of Deltona, fishing with Capt. Bo Sellers of Ramrod Key, Fla. The anglers released 12 fish measuring a total of 524.75 inches. Trent Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, caught the largest individual barracuda in the spin division. He released the 51.75-inch fish while guided by Capt. Scott Irvine of Key West. Marathon angler Wade Mayberry scored the most releases in the spin division with 32. He fished with Capt. Albert Ponzoa, also of Marathon. In the fly division, Jim Knowles of Round Hill, Va., released 22 barracuda to take the “most releases” title. His captain was Peter Heydon of Key West. elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. March 28-31, 2019 One of my most favorite events of the entire year, The Palm Beach International Boat Show, is just around the corner. In a few short weeks the downtown West Palm Beach Flagler Drive waterfront will be transformed into an enormous 650+ slip marina with floating docks and tents everywhere! It is pretty incredible that the entire show is built inside of 15 days and dismantled in 4. The tents, the boats, the yachts, the vendors, all the exhibits, clinics, seminars, and fun; in excess of 5000 spaces, 800+ boats all appear for our celebration of all things boating and outdoors that many of us live and work for! Thank you to The Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County (MIAPBC) and Informa US Boat Shows for giving us our annual fix. First things first; buy your tickets in advance, using the Promo Code: COASTAL online at pbboatshow.com to save $3 on a single day adult ticket and avoid the lines at the gate. You can come to the show this year on Brightline trains from Ft Lauderdale, booking your trip on the Boat Show website. Sun Trolleys will be traveling West Palm Beach picking up guests and dropping them at the gate. Routes are available on the website as well, dramatically improving parking options. You don’t necessarily have to pay for premium parking if you can hop a trolley. There will be more docking if you want to travel to the show by boat. There is a boat show app to help you plan your day at the show and take advantage of all the special events. When you arrive at the show you will see security enhancements and detection devices to make access easier and more effective. If you are coming to the show with kids, be sure check the times for Hook the Future Fishing Clinics. Stop by the AquaZone with Jetpack demos, electric surfboards, paddle boarding, Hobie kayaks and much more! Then check out the Florida Fishing Academy Mobile Marine Lab with its touch tank and other exhibits. I am told that there will be enhanced culinary options for guests, to go along with other upgrades to the infrastructure, all with improving the guest experience in mind. If you want to go all out, the Winward VIP Club experience is an all-inclusive luxury retreat within the show. Air-conditioned indoor space inside the Lakeside Pavilion features premium open bar, hors d’oeuvres, indoor and outdoor lounge seating, private bathrooms and much more. Fishing with Darcizzle by Darcie Arahill Contributing Writer Anglers, March Madness has arrived which means the fishing should offer plentiful action for a variety of species inshore and offshore this month! The sea temperatures will be warming up and cool fronts will begin to fizzle out as the month progresses. The wind will be your biggest rival because March is considered a transitional month as we head into the beginning of spring. Offshore, sailfish will be a likely catch in the beginning of March, but large numbers of migrating sails are already south of Palm Beach waters. On the bright side, the mahi mahi bite should improve. If we have a steady easterly wind, this should prompt you to rig some ballyhoo and head offshore. Look for conditions such as edges, temperature breaks, rips and debris. On the beach, spinner sharks will be relatively easy to locate. Scan the beach and drive your boat along the coast especially between Palm Beach Inlet and Jupiter inlet looking for jumping sharks. Once located start chumming and get some baits out. Live bait is great, but big chunks of bonita and barracuda will work. You should be looking for sea turtles and large sharks in shallow water too; cobia will be following them! Bottom fishing and jigging the deepwater wrecks off Boca, Boynton, or Palm Beach will yield big fish; AJ’s, kings, mutton snapper, Spanish mackerel, grouper and wahoo are all on the list.

In the IWC and rivers, there will plenty of inshore action for anglers to enjoy. Snook season has been open for a month already so get out there for your slot fish (28-32” on Florida’s Atlantic coast). Live bait is best-mullet if you can find them, pilchards, or just live shrimp from a local shop. Find some moving water or current, and throw that live bait or artificial under the docks, against seawalls, pilings, bridges, etc. For snook and tarpon, I like to use Yo-Zuri crystal minnow lip divers; trolling or just casting around structure. If the water is dirty, use dark colored lures and if the water is clear use light colored artificial lures. Say hello if you see on the water and until next time, keep on catchin’! Dear Recyclinda I’m an avid recycler and have been for decades. Even so, I’m sometimes just not sure what to do with a certain item. Blue bin? Yellow bin? Trash? Because I love recycling so much, I want everything to be recyclable, so I’ll usually put whatever item into the blue or yellow bin. There’s no harm in that, is there? Wishful in Westlake The short answer? Yes. Yes, there is lots of harm. “Wish recycling” - tossing uncertain items into your recycling bins because you just hope they can be recycled - causes huge problems. First, let me be the first to empathize. Recyclinda knows all too well the urge to purge without hurting the planet. Using paper plates feels wasteful, so it’s tempting to convince yourself they can be recycled. (They cannot.) Pitching 100 feet of water hose is unpleasant, so you want to believe the heavy coils can go in the blue bin so maybe the metal ends will be cut off. (Nope.) Not only are these items not recyclable, putting the wrong refuse in the recycling bins can cause havoc at the SWA’s recycling center. Equipment is damaged by plastic bags, cords, Christmas lights and hoses. Greasy cardboard and food-stained paper plates contaminate clean paper, making it harder to recycle. Chemical containers can start fires in the facility. Your best bet? When in doubt, throw it out. INSHORE: Spring is in the air. Snook, redfish and trout will still be along mangroves and in between docks. Focus your time on points in the mangrove line and docks with the most current. Throwing DOA shad tails and jerk baits will work well matching the hatch of glass minnows in the water. Launching your kayak inside Jonathan Dickinson State Park will put you in line with fishing some productive docks and mangroves. This is one of the better times to also target tripletail. Look to find them around channel markers and buoys near the mouth of the Loxahatchee River and throughout the Indian River Lagoon.

OFFSHORE: Fishing will start to pick up this month with larger kingfish and more mahi swimming through. The sailfish bite will continue to be good as well. Cobia in March has always been good for us. These fish will start to move from the beach to the reef line. Fishing Jupiter to Delray Beach reefs bouncing the bottom with jigs, sardines and pilchards are your best bets. Off the Treasure Coast hit places like the Sandpile and look for free swimming rays and sharks. Put your time in and you should find a few. Finally if you want some non-stop action the Spanish mackerel will still be in full force at Peck’s Lake just off the beach in Stuart. March madness is upon Bob with a us! The mullet are heading very rare through town again and nassau all the big lagoon monsters grouper are excited about it too. Although it’s gonna be windy, the water is warmer and the snook and jacks will be fired up. The name of the game is heavy tackle and big baits, whether artificial or live; the plan is the same. Docks, seawalls or anywhere else with current, fish the direction of the tide and be ready because these fish will take you to school quick. Out on the beach, spinner sharks will be around and ready to play on bait, fly or popper. You don’t need a boat to capitalize on the beach action either. Bluefish, ladyfish, sharks and other targets will be patrolling the surf line. Try a crippled herring or chrome spoon with a short wire trace. If you use j hooks instead of treble hooks it makes dehooking and getting back in the game safer and faster. In freshwater, the peacocks will be enjoying the warm up and it’s a great time to target them before they start to spawn. Rattle traps, and on warmer days - poppers will get it done on the artificial side. For live bait, small cichlids, tilapia and shiners pitched to docks and seawalls will have you tight quick. Osbourne will still have a good sunshine bass bite. Troll a bright colored crankbait through the shad schools and hang on. For the fly anglers, I would throw large olive and tan baitfish flies and fish them methodically and slow around the docks and bridge pilings. The Glades will still be great fishing with Oscars, bass, bowfin and snook. Be safe out there Steven caught this awesome freshwater snook while we were bass fishing the Glades.

THE BUC IS BACK! De-Bait-able Takes the Win in a Field of 39 Boats
The 56th Annual Buccaneer Cup Sailfish Tournament was held January 23 to 26, 2019 in the Palm Beaches. This year an additional fishing day was added to the format giving teams the choice to fish any two. With two days of near ideal conditions, and a much-anticipated bite pushing into the area from the north, teams were rewarded with steady fishing. After the entire field of top competition teams took a lay day on Thursday, all 39 boats hustled to release 180 sailfish on Friday and Saturday, The prize, a purse in excess of $352,000, the prestigious and beautiful Buccaneer Cup trophies for the top three boats and anglers, and bragging rights for placing in one of the oldest and most enduring billfish tournaments in the world. Add to that the knowledge that the tournament proceeds benefit the Recreational Fishing Alliance and The Billfish Foundation, there was a lot at stake. Day Two opened with grey skies, light east winds and a strong bite with 14 sails being released within the first hour. Martha D called in the first release of the tournament just 17 minutes after lines in at 8 AM. The live baiters seemed to have the edge as Old No. 7, and De-Bait-Able took an early lead, but dead baiters Polarizer and Krazy Salts also made runs to claim the top spot for the day and the Calcutta dailies. By lines out, Old No. 7 racked up 10 releases on live bait for 2,000 points, followed closely by De-Bait-Able just 200 points off the leader. The top dead baiters filled out the leader board with Polarizer and Krazy Salts in the 3rd and 4th spots aided by a late bite that saw six releases in the final 30 minutes of fishing before lines out at 3:30. Day Three saw a drop in the wind and accompanying slowdown in the action, but the live baiters Team De-Bait-Able taking home top boat continued to push their advantage. Based on radio chatter, fishing was best in a small area to the north award and a check for $110,800! of Jupiter Inlet. De-Bait-Able, with Capt. KJ Zeher at the helm, put on an astonishing clinic the final day Old No 7 in Second with 3000 points amassing a total of 4,200 points by lines out bringing their two-day total up to 21 sailfish releases and leaving Photo Credit:Leonard Bryant the competition in their wake. Tournament staff utilized Reel Time Apps for accurate, up-to-the-minute scoring that was available to teams and tournament enthusiasts by simply downloading the free app. The program was linked to the official radio room computer scoring team and updated minute-by-minute allowing teams to follow the leader board throughout each fishing day. At tournament’s end the radio logs were matched against the boat’s catch logs and Reel Time Apps and then verified by video confirmation. The winning boats were De-Bait-Able on top, Old No. 7 securing second place, with Sandman just 200 points behind in third. The competition was a nail biter between the top boats and was capped by a great run by Wrapped-Up breaking out of the pack in the final hour of the tournament trying valiantly to catch the leaders. In addition to several Calcutta categories, Old No. 7 also won the Charity Calcutta which includes an entry fee to the 2019 Buc Cup. They have been a regular in the tournament the past few years and no doubt the crew will be back next year trying to top their second-place finish.

Chef Lenny Strobel of Reel Time USA recently organized a Reel*Time USA Catch and Cook Challenge for the Veterans at Juno Pier on Saturday, February 9th. The day began with an Invocation prayer by Commander Chuck Boykin of the VFW Post 4143 in Riviera Beach, followed by a live guitar rendition of the National Anthem by Joe Birch. The 3 hour pier fishing challenge unfortunately yielded no fish caught. It is believed that the Juno Pier was affected by the migration of sharks that had been widely reported in the area. Due to the lack of fish but not effort, the Veterans had a blast. It was decided to draw 6 winners to enjoy the Grand prize of a 4 hour fishing trip on the 64ft Viking (Waterhog III) generously donated by owner Tom Conners. The winners were: Commander Chuck Boykin, Dave Pietrafese, Richard Rush, Wild Bill, James Camarda and John Succoso. Also, RTUSA raised awareness for PTSD and chose “Vets Continue Mission” to raffle an Angler’s Fish-n-Mate Cart. 100% of the proceeds went to “Vets Continue Mission” The Winner was John Succoso. Complimentary hot dogs, chips and water was provided at the VFW Post 4143 after fishing stopped at 3 pm. An awards dinner and raffle drawing were held from 5 to 8 pm. Welcome to March madness. The spring breakers will arrive and so will the spring dolphin migration. Expect decent dolphin and blackfin tuna fishing this month along with some nice smoker kingfish in the mix. The water off the Breakers Hotel will be a great spot to ambush these tasty creatures. The bait of choice will be small scale baits Slammer mutton like sardines or thread-fins. These baits are snappers will be deadly and whoever has their live-well full on the prowl... of them will have the best day out. Trying to catch them may be tough for weekend warriors. My suggestion is to place your order the night before with your favorite bait guy and just meet them in the morning. Doesn’t get easier than that! For you bottom fishing killers, there will be a lot of opportunity. Those small live baits work perfectly on the bottom. Long leaders will get you more bites. There will be a good mutton snapper bite off Juno. Make sure you crank those fish in fast. There seems to be a resident population of sharks along the edge and they love to eat your dinner. Along with great snapper fishing, there will be cobia lurking on the bottom. If you get a hard bite and your line races to the surface... good chance, it’s a cobia.... “ Grab the Custom BBW gaff fast”!!! For the inshore anglers, keep your eye on the beaches for tarpon, jacks and permit chasing small baits. Light leaders will fool the shy one to bite, and a stiff rod will get them to the boat. Cruise the shore until you find a good school to cast to. The park north of the Singer Island condos holds fish well. Be cautious of the submerged rocks and people swimming. ROAD TRIPFISHING Fishin’ On Foot by Keith Lozott, Contributing Writer Some of us just need to fish no matter when, where or how. Time is crunched, the boat is in the shop, working long hours, kids need to be taken to activities and driven all over the place or whatever the reason may be. Well there is a fix for this need to fish and that’s taking advantage of the numerous ponds that can be accessed on foot in our area. Drainage ponds throughout Florida are loaded with bass, bream, bluegills, peacock bass (south), Mayan cichlids, and numerous other species that are a blast to catch. All you need to access these waters is a fishing license, light tackle spinning rod, a baitcaster or a light fly rod. Make sure you’re not fishing in no fishing zones or private property. I have found the canals in Coral Springs hold numerous species that will all smash a Beetle Spin, or a white fluke rigged weedless. The invasive snakeheads are all over these canals and they put As you can see, these fish were up a great fight. Personally, they truly caught on a solo walk really creep me out for some reason, about trip but I will say I fought one on my ultralight spinner and it fought and fought before finally breaking me off on a culvert. I was totally under gunned with a 1000 sized reel on a 5’5” light action two piece rod, but it was fun. If it is the hard fighting peacock bass you’re after (I don’t blame you for that) try using a fly rod with a white clouser minnow pattern. The hits on the fly were triple compared to my spinning presentation. However, the clouser presentation most likely had everything to do with the added bites on fly. I think a light bucktail jig may have been a good option if I’d had one on hand. Largemouth bass are always in the mix and will hit numerous lures in your box. My buddy Neil and I have found that Zoom Lizards rigged weedless with no weight are incredible on bass in the PGA National canals if you can access them legally. Park at one of the parks and start your bass attack on foot. Mayan cichlids are aggressive and hard fighting on light tackle and will hit Beetle Spins like it’s their job. They are very colorful fish with orange spots and stripes along with a dark brown main body color. I’ve caught them in brackish water and know they are considered snook candy as bait. I predominately fish artificial baits but have witnessed giant snook caught on them at local spillways when they are flowing. Remember, take some photos of these fish, especially the peacock bass and cichlid as they light up the camera. Now get out there on foot and catch some fish! You may get some exercise on top of it as well. Secondly, this type of fishing is a great way to get the kids involved and fishing at an early age. COASTALKIDS My Fishing Adventures by Christopher Sprague Jr. Angler-Team Tuppens Hello Anglers, I can’t wait for the tournaments to begin! It has been too long, but luckily, they are going to begin soon. Since the tournaments have not yet begun, I have been bass fishing quite a bit. I have been using a bait that a bass pro Mark aka “High Tower” recommended. I have been catching many big bass on this lure. It has been my favorite lure. It is a normal dark green and white swimbait. Recently, I went fishing for thirty minutes and caught 2 nice bass in our neighborhood canals. The first bass that I caught was within 5 minutes of first starting. It had hit the bait twice. The first time it hit, it bit right after I cast my bait and hit the water. I didn’t even realize it had hit, so I didn’t have time to set up the hook. Because of that, I lost the bass at the shore. Within the next 5 casts, it hit again, and I got him this time! I reeled it in slowly, letting it run when it decided to, and I pulled it on shore. It was a decent size bass that was about 2 pounds, which isn’t bad for our canals. I later moved spots and caught another bass, but smaller. I have a lot of fun bass fishing, especially when the bite is on! I plan to fish a lot this year both freshwater and saltwater. This month, we forecast more pompano than there were in February, so use clams, live shrimp and jigs to catch them. You can also try your luck with Spanish mackerel using lures and jigs. Jacks and blue runners can be caught on lures and shrimp, as well as chunks of finger mullet. While snook don’t really heat up until April, use bottom baits, sardines or live bait as your best bet. As always, catch croaker and whiting on frozen or live shrimp. March marks the start of sea turtle nesting season in Palm Beach County! As female sea turtles begin to nest, the Juno Beach Pier will open 30 minutes before sunrise and close at sunset. These operating hours will be in effect until the end of sea turtle nesting season in October. If you know an aspiring angler, Loggerhead Marinelife Center offers its year-round Private Fishing Lessons for adults and children (ages 8 and up.) One-hour lessons are offered daily; scheduled based on availability. Cost: $25/angler (with own gear); $35/angler with rental gear. Bait not included. Fly casters can enjoy epic snook action. I like to use the 2 inch DOA shrimp for steady rod bending action or small white flies mimicking small bait fish. Tarpon will he found occupying deep channels creating great opportunities for anglers to target rolling fish near the surface. Try to read were the tarpon are heading and study their actions. This will allow you to choose your best method to present your bait and position your boat. DOA Bait buster and live mullet or greenies will leave you bowing to the silver king. These fish are great for their acrobatic leaps and drag screaming runs. The size of the tarpon ranges from 20 to 90 pounds. The docks, and Tommy with seawalls in the Lake Worth snook. Toy Drive and Palm Beach Boat Parade a Record-Breaking Success
The 24th Annual Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade (PBHBP) and 19th Annual Toy Drive kicked off the 2018 holiday season in early December. The events resulted in the collection of over 11,000 donated toys, a record of nearly 70 decorated parade boats, more than $10,000 in prizes awarded to parade participants, and tens of thousands of spectators. The 11,273 donated toys made the event the largest toy collecting event for Toys for Tots in the entire country, and a top collector for Little Smiles. The events, hosted by the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, Inc. (MIAPBC), took place on Saturday, December 1 in North Palm Beach to benefit Toys for Tots and Little Smiles. In addition to the tens of thousands in attendance to view the parade in-person, over 14,000 people were able to view the parade from the comfort of their own homes with the new WPBF Facebook Live stream of the event and on the WPBF app. Boat owners and their crews came out to support the toy drive and have fun by competing against each other for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. Entrants spent hours planning and setting up displays that contained thousands of lights, inflatables, props and more. Boats of all sizes were welcomed to enter with no entry fee required. Best of Parade was awarded to Pardi Princess, a yacht decorated with colorful lights, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus in his sleigh led by reindeer, and more for an impressive Christmas-themed presentation. For the first year in the event’s history, a fan favorite award was given. The Goode Life received positive reactions both online through Facebook voting and offline, reaching 8,000 on social media between the initial post and winner announcement. Judges also selected winners in a variety of categories, including under 25’, 25’-35’, over 35’ and corporate vessels. In the under 25’ category, Ms. Be Haven, Suits Us Too and Too Much Fun finished first through third respectively. Blue Rose finished first place in the 25’-35’ group with Eagles Nest finishing second and Aaron Liscomb coming in third. The over 35’ group was more competitive than ever before with two vessels – Freedom and Cornelius tying for first place and Honu finishing third. In the corporate boat group, Dee Queen II finished first, Country Club finished second and the Food Yacht came in third. Dozens of fun and valuable prizes donated by sponsors were awarded during the parade, and all boats that placed in a category received a custom-engraved crystal award to prove their ability to spread holiday cheer. Pardi Princess won $1,500 for Best of Parade while The Goode Life took home $500 for being the fan favorite. Other prizes included fishing excursions, restaurant gift cards, spa services, towing memberships and more. In December 2019, the PBHBP will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Organizers hope to retain the event’s standing as the largest toy collecting event for Toys for Tots in the United States and break their 2018 mark of 11,273 toys. Paddling the Florida Springs can be a never ending quest. There are 100’s of springs to paddle, each with their own unique characteristics. First you need to pick your springs based on the time of year. Some are better in the winter than other due to the aquatic scenery. My recent destination was Weeki Wachee Springs, in Spring Hill, Fl. Weeki Wachee has a lot to offer for all ages. They have a water park in the spring, river boat cruises, camps and my favorite, the mermaid show. I wanted to share my suggestions to make it easy for you to SUP the springs. The distance on the river is 5.5 miles and they say it takes about 3 hours by kayak. We did it with 12 people on SUP in about 2.5 hours, but we stopped often. There is no need to bring your own board. I traveled with 12 of my SUP Club friends and we had 2 trucks loaded with boards. I know we all love our boards but when you are traveling in a big group it’s better to rent. They rent boards at Weeki Wachee for $32.50 which includes your shuttle ride back. If you bring your own board the entry is $6.00. Return shuttle with board is $10.00 or just shuttle without the board is $5.00. Other important things to know is that the last drop in is at 11:00 a.m. If you do decide to bring your own board make sure you have a short draft fin because the depth can be as low as 6 “ in some places or there can be submerged trees. This goes for all springs. Now let me tell you about our experience. The staff is amazing and helpful. The drop in area is very convenient. The water is about 72 degrees. When we went in January the weather was overcast, windy and the high temp for the day was 59 degrees. We all had some type of wet suit which helped with the cold air. Take your time going down. We saw 5 manatee which I believe one was an albino, 3 deer and earlier there was a black bear sighting. By the end of the 5.5 miles we were freezing because it was 59 degrees, but at the haul out there is a bar & grill to get warmed up and filled up. They brought us all back in the van and we headed out for our next adventure, Crystal River. ON THE RANGE by Chuck Papp Contributing Writer Another deer season has come and gone. Hopefully it was a productive season for you as it was for me. Now we look forward to the next. For many it’s not just about the season itself but preparing and getting ready for the next even though it maybe months away. There is a lot of planning that goes into getting ready. One is taking care of your equipment before the next go around. If you are hunter, angler, or just an outdoor adventurer you know that good equipment isn’t cheap, and cheap equipment isn’t good. It is built to last, but you need to maintain it to get your maximum use. Firearms need to be cleaned and stored properly to keep them in good working order. There is a multimillion dollar industry built around firearm, and fishing equipment maintenance. Cleaning kits, cleaners, solvents, cases, the list goes on and on. Average cost for a decent hunting shotgun starts at $600 and goes up quick. Hunting rifles with optics starting at $1000 and up, and it goes up fast. So, spend some money and get everything you need so you will not have a problem in the field. Not just firearms need attention. Knives need sharpening and cleaning; those scopes and binoculars need wiped down and their lenses cleaned. Fresh batteries in cameras and laser range finders along with flashlights should be replaced before the next season. Clothing washed and properly stored away, along with a clean set of boots. ATV users need oil changed, new lamps for lights, cooling systems checked, tires and the list goes on. Many after season sales will be under way. You can save a lot of cash on an end of year clearance sale for that new hunting jacket. Deer stands, feeders, blinds, all of that will be on sale so take advantage. One of the best things to stock up on is your favorite hunting ammo. Sure, you will not need now, but try finding it a month before season starts. St. Augustine’s Shallow Water Reds And Trout

W
ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND
MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton
T
he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.
Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
