A Time of Porpoise

Fishing in Spring and Summer

Gulf Coast summers are busy seasons in the Panhandle. Visitors flock here from across the country and around the world - not only people but the feathered variety as well! Florida beaches are home to vulnerable sea and shorebirds that nest right on the sand in tiny indents, well-camouflaged to beach-goers and surfcasting anglers alike.

Black Skimmers, Least Terns, Snowy Plovers, Wilson's Plovers, and American Oystercatchers all nest close to the dunes, and are protected by the State of Florida. Harming their nests or chicks - whether accidentally or on purpose - can result in fines. Don't worry! Follow a few simple rules and you can enjoy fun fishing days while protecting these feathered beach babies.

When walking down the beach, walk near the waves instead of up by the dunes. Do not walk across or go between the dunes.

Take your dog to designated dog beaches or leave Fido at home.

Don't feed the birds, even with fish you catch. Birds should not associate people with food.

Avoid areas that say "no trespassing," even if you don't notice any birds.
