Hey whats up panhandle anglers!! Capt Brett here to give you guys the low down for August! Its gonna be a hot month for sure. The air and water temps rise a bunch during this month and rising temps have fish on the move. Alot of the bigger reef fish will be moving from the shallower 80-100 foot wrecks to deeper structure from 120-300 foot. The closure of American Red Snapper to recreational fishing will lead way to Amberjack opening August 1! American Red Snapper will be open to harvest on federally permitted charter vessels until mid August. Amberjack are one of my favorite fish to target and fight. They are absolutely one of the hardest fighting and strongest fish on the reefs. They typically range in the 20-30 pound range but can grow to 100 pounds! My favorite way to target them is with live bait. You will need some beefy tackle to land them so you will need to prep accordingly. I use a super heavy duty star rod and 100 plus pound line. Hooks vary depending on the size of the bait. Mustad 3x 6/0-10/0 circle hooks work the best for me. Typically I will use hardtails or ruby reds for bait. If you can chum them up the most effective method is freelining the bait to them. If they dont want to come up a heavy carolina rig can be effective as well. On the carolina rig a 10-12 foot leader with 100-130 pound line is going to get the job done. Amberjacks in deeper water also eat jigs and bucktails as well. When you get one of these monsters to bite you better hang on!! You will be having sore arms and you will feel the burn! Hopefully this info helps you guys get on some biggens!
