Whatever happened to Sea Cat? By Thatch Maguire
A
bout 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to ride aboard a dual-hull, 21-foot center console called a Sea Cat. Like many others, I’ve been a fan of cats ever since. The ride of a dual-hull vessel, especially in choppy seas, is dramatically different from that of a mono-hull. The stability of a two-hull system creates a cutting effect, as opposed to the bounce associated with the plaining of the mono-hull. Study after study has confirmed this effect affords “cats” substantially better fuel economy as well as a much smoother ride and shallower draft. The “cult” of the dual-hull cat has its origins in Australia, where catamaran-style hulls have long been the choice for Australia’s working fishermen. The consistent chop in their seas requires the stability of a catamaran hull. In the United States, several companies pioneered development of the catamaran-style boats for our waters. In the late 1950s, Ray Leger began producing the Power Cat series on the West Coast and several other companies including Manacat and Ocean Star began producing cats in the East. Years after my ride aboard the Sea Cat, I purchased a 26-foot World Cat. I was told Sea Cat was now World Cat. I visited the North Carolina World Cat factory, where I was told they no longer produced the Sea Cat. Recently, I learned the Sea Cat is still being produced in Greenville, N.C. After a few phone calls, and a little Googling, I found Forrest Munden at Sea Cat Boats. The following interview with Mr. Munden attempts to unravel the mystery of “Whatever happened to Sea Cat?” Q: Mr. Munden, how is it you are today selling a vessel that many thought was no longer on the market? Weren’t you associated with the original Sea Cat I fell in love with? Munden: Yes I was. Sea Cat was originally created by Graham Flanagan in 1992. I was manufacturing Leisure Cat boats with Regal Marine in Orlando, Fla., and Graham was manufacturing Sea Cat boats in Greenville, N.C. The innovations developed on the Sea Cat seemed destined to have substantial influence on the boating industry. The boats were super fuel-efficient and rode smoothly in nearly any conditions.

Q: Well what happened? Munden: In 1996, I purchased Sea Cat boats and its Greenville manufacturing facility. During my first year with the brand, I designed and developed the World Cat line of catamaran boats. World Cat molds were manufactured by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fla. by my good friend Jeff Gray, CEO of Vectorworks. Once we received the new World Cat molds at the plant in Greenville, we started making the World Cat and stopped making the Sea Cat. That was early in 1997. The Sea Cat molds were stored for another year and a half until my good friend Ken Hall (previous CEO of Proline/Donzi) purchased them. He owned the Florida boat company Sportcraft and wanted to add a catamaran line. He called the Sea Cat boat the Sportcat. Unfortunately, Sportcat and Sportcraft did not survive the 1998 economic downturn. The next I heard of Sea Cat was when a former Sea Cat dealer and two brothers from Columbia, S.C. splashed the 19-foot Sea Cat mold. Then, Jerry Semers purchased that mold from the brothers, who had closed their business. Mr. Semers’ started the new venture in Titusville, Fla., utilizing Vector Works Marine as a home base. He called the boat Sea Cat. After Mr. Semers passed away, the molds and tooling sat vacant for years. In 2017, a good friend and ex-Sea Cat and World Cat dealer invited me into a venture to make a new catamaran with the Sea Cat name. I reached out to Mr. Gray at Vectorworks and proceeded to do the tooling and mold building through their team. The result, introduced in 2019, is the new 260 Sea Cat Hybrid bay boat built by our partner Pete Caldwell, Caldwell Marine Designs. The original Seacat Boat built in 1992 was built again 27 years later at the same Greenville plant. Today’s vessel is capable of power up to twin 300 horsepower. Today’s 26-foot Sea Cat has handling characteristics far superior to the original that you fell in love with. I
f you’ve never made your way to Florida’s Forgotten Coast to spend a day in the Gulf of Mexico catching red snapper, you owe it to yourself to have a go at it. The red snapper is likely the most prized catch of anglers here, and for good reasons: they make most excellent table fare, they’re absolutely beautiful, they’re easy to catch most days, and it’s hard to beat snapper fishing for a day of friends and family fun.
To give you an idea about how prolific the red snapper are here, let me share a phrase commonly used by local charter captains fishing for other species of fish: “We had to leave that spot because we couldn’t get our bait past the snapper!” Yes, FWC does tightly manage harvest seasons and bag limits, and it’s frustrating for many, but the fact is, we have a lot of red snapper here! Currently, the Gulf snapper season runs June 11 through July 12. If you plan on bringing your own boat to the area, fear not; plenty of boat ramps and other accommodations will ensure your experience is a good one. Finding snapper can be as easy as using the many public sites available, just plug them into your GPS and go! Rigging for snapper is very easy. I’d suggest a minimum of 30-pound-test mainline, and make your leaders with a quality 50-pound-test fluorocarbon. If using live bait like cigar minnows or Spanish sardines, I suggest you fabricate your leader this way. Attach a swivel to your main line, use 80-pound mono to create a 6-inch leader to slide your egg sinker onto, with another swivel on the other end. Now attach a 5-foot length of fluorocarbon leader with a 3/0 to 5/0 circle hook on the business end. When fishing deep with a conventional Carolina-style rig where the weight slips, you’ll sometimes find that your weight is all the way to the bottom, but your live bait is swimming right under the boat. Securing the weight to the leader rig ensures this doesn’t happen and gets the bait right down to the fish. Guides here are at the ready to take you, your family and friends out for what promises to be an exceptionally good snapper season, but book early, availability can be limited once the season kicks off. Many other species of fish are on the chew here too, folks, so don’t overlook the tarpon, redfish, AJs, king mackerel and so much more that awaits both inshore and offshore. mpoundments created by damming rivers and creeks all have something in common beginning in about June. Fish head out to the ledges, and it’s this summer pattern that brings anglers to the famous offshore ledges on my home lake, Eufaula, as well as on reservoirs around the region. Spawning is about over, and several game species, especially bass, are searching for food, cover and shade. The sharp ledges where the river and creek banks dropped straight down before the lake was formed are the perfect spot for hide and seek. From the headwaters, where the ledges are the shallowest, down to the dams, where ledges are sometimes too deep to be practical, there is a sweet spot that affords the perfect temperature, oxygen and other environmental necessities to maintain life and comfort. The difference in water temperatures at certain depths, generating schedule, current flow speed, lake level and many other factors determine exactly where this sweet spot is on any different day or hour. Those with the most experience on a given reservoir have a distinct advantage, but information pertaining to these criteria is
available at most U.S. Army Corps headquarters offices as well as from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Whoever controls the dams where you fish has the information you need. For Lake Eufaula, call (866) 772-9542 ext. 244. In most cases an app is available for your favorite lake. Ledges are nothing short of structure, and knowing where to look is a very important factor. Critical features support feeding advantages such as the sharpest of the sharp drop-offs, small ditches that intersect with such sudden drops, a rise in adjacent landscape creating a ski-jump effect, points, curvatures, and the list goes on. Some of these features create an updraft where cooler water is forced upward, and likewise, just the opposite only yards away. In all the mentioned areas, shad and other prey are disrupted by the sudden surge in water flow. Today’s electronics, with highdefinition displays showing us where bait and bass congregate, are a huge advantage to finding the sweet spot on the ledges. But a little old-fashioned map work is also key to putting yourself where the fish are likely to be. As always, know“ledge”—pun intended—is the key to success. Careful study of your lake master maps and identifying target returns can produce unbelievable results, not just in June, but all summer long. Jake’s Outdoor Adventures By Jake Worthington “Surely, two of the most satisfying experiences in life must be those of being a grandchild or a grandparent.” Donald A. Norber Growing up I was lucky to have two Grandfathers in my life. I remember each and every fishing trip I ever took with each of them. Unfortunately, these are all of the memories I will ever have with them. At the beginning of this year, I lost both of my Grandfathers barely a month apart from each other. The sense of loss was great, but I am so very thankful that I got the time to fish with both of them. I remember Rockfishing with my Grandaddy Fred on our boat in the Pasquotank River. We really caught a lot of Rockfish that day and I was able to send him back home with a cooler load of fish. I also remember Rockfishing with him with Captain Devin Cage on the Poacher targeting bigger Rockfish on the Chesapeake Bay. I also remember going out with my Grandaddy Jimmy on Captain Tony Tillet’s boat the Carolinian. I got to show off my offshore fishing skills to him that day, and we caught our limit of Yellowfin Tuna. I would not trade these times for anything, and I have great memories that will last me for the rest of my life. However if you are reading this article, my point was not to depress you but to get you to make some family memories while you are visiting the Outer Banks. For years while on the fishing piers, I have witnessed grandparents bringing their kids fishing. Some grandparents were expert fishermen and others didn’t have a clue, but I would bet in either case the grandchild loved the time and memories made. So if you are here on vacation, take your grandkids or children fishing. There are several charter captains that offer half day charters if you are worried about time and/ or conditions. I will warn you if you want to think big and go offshore, make sure you pick the right day when conditions are calmer because your memory could become a nightmare. I have witnessed many a kid have a miserable day of fishing offshore because it was so rough and they were seasick the whole trip. If weather doesn’t cooperate during your visit, then try pier fishing. If you are lucky to be one of those experienced grandparents who knows how to fish, then you can hit the surf and fish with your grandchild. Take pictures and videos to memorialize the event and make plans to fish again when you come back next year. I can guarantee your grandchild will treasure the time you spend with them forever. If you are here on the Outer Banks the week of June 19, 2019, then take your grandchild to fish in the Fritz Boyden Annual Youth Fishing Tournament. This tournament starts at 8:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm with an awards ceremony afterwards.

June fishing can be some fantastic fishing! Warm water temps bring plenty of options. Offshore dolphin and tuna tempt many anglers. If the yellowfin show like last summer early morning ballyhoo bites should fill the cooler. Seems the kite fishing starts later in the month. Some days the sharks can get pretty bad chasing your hooked tuna. Not much you can do about that. Closer to shore we will be hunting cobia and red drum. Sight casting is our preferred method but chumming and baitfishing gets em as well. Inlet fishing the sheepshead fishing should be in full swing. Dropping sandfleas or crab along pilings can get these delicate nibblers into the cooler. Puppy drum and speckled trout should be lurking on the grass flats. Seems grass with open sandy potholes hold the most trout. Light jigs seem to be a great option. You might even get a bonus flounder. Try a gold weedless spoon for those puppy drum. INJURED ANIMAL? CONTACT ANIMAL HELP NOW! by Maren Kelley The month of March marks the start of baby season for wildlife, and as resources and space begin to dwindle, shelters and rehabilitators begin to feel more stress. Fishermen, exposed to nature much more than the average person, can serve as the eyes and ears for wildlife rehabilitators. At some point in a fisherman’s experience, they will most likely find an injured or orphaned animal, so this article provides more information on what to do in those situations. A lot of babies brought into shelters are either perfectly healthy or only injured as a result of human interference. The most common animals brought into shelters are squirrels, rabbits, and waterfowl, like ducks and geese. Storms cause baby squirrels to fall out of nests, rabbits burrow in backyards and homeowners panic, ducks could lay eggs near your home and children decide to steal an egg, or any number of scenarios. Wildlife shelters must manage all of this, but you can help ease the stress. The important thing to remember is to not interfere with wildlife unless it is absolutely necessary. If you think an animal may be injured or orphaned, before taking any action, you should contact a wildlife rehabilitator or shelter and they will inform you on exactly what to do so that the animal is not harmed. If an animal is orphaned, it will be completely alone or you will see the dead mother nearby. This is an instance when you should immediately call a wildlife rehabilitator or shelter. The second most important step is to keep the baby or babies warm. This can be accomplished by heating up rice or a water bottle and placing it inside a sock, or heating up some water and double bagging it in plastic bags. Check the temperature to make sure that it isn’t too hot, then cover that with a soft towel or blanket and place the
baby on top. Pet carriers or shoe boxes are perfect for transporting animals if you are told to do so. If you suspect an animal is injured, call a wildlife rehabilitator or shelter, and keep an eye on the animal. There are many warning signs, such as any bleeding or limping, but do not take action until you have contacted a professional. No matter what, always make sure to keep an eye on the animal or animals in question. If an animal wanders off and can’t be found, there is nothing that can be done to help it, so always know where the animal is. A great resource to use to find contact information and resources is the Animal Help Now! website and app, which has information on wildlife emergencies for all fifty states. Other great resources include dgif.virginia.gov and virginiawildlifehelp.weebly. com, where you can find more information on wildlife and wildlife care. Finally, fishing line left behind has adverse effects on wildlife. Although it may seem harmless, fishing line gets tangled around wildlife all the time, causing serious injuries. Let’s take care of our environment. We must remember to clean up after ourselves, for the sake of wildlife and the beautiful fishing locations we value. Be kind with your line.

Black drum are excellent eating fish. It simply is a very meaty tasty fish that is very versatile and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Fried, baked, broiled, drum balls, drum puppies, drum rolls, and the list goes on. This is one of my favorites, Drum piccata, and it is simple. Just get yourself some fresh tomatoes, spring onion, garlic, 1 jalapeno, lime, 1 yellow pepper and some salt and pepper. Lastly, a BUNCH of cilantro. Chop everything up place in a bowl and stir. Now get your drum filet and blacken with some butter in a cast iron skillet. Once done, serve the filet over a bed of pasta and top with the piccata. Absolutely fantastic!

What can I say that everyone now in Virginia and North Carolina doesn’t already know, and that is… The Drum bite is ROCKIN!!! JBOTV had the pleasure of fishing seaside of the Eastern Shore out of Willis Warf with Captain Sam Sellard, his wife Jean and their buddy Joe. What a crew! He headed out just south of Hogg Island and once anchored, casted clams into the shallows. BAM! Hooked up immediately with an awesome black drum, a real hogg! What came next was three more totally awesome catches. All blacks, although Sam had been catching reds, today during our short excursion the blacks were on the bite big time. We were not using any crab just clams and the bite was hot. We limited out pretty quick and headed back in. One of the most enjoyable fishing trips in a long while. The Eastern Shore sea side is a spectacular sight to see. Many thanks to Captain Sam and crew because they really put us on the fish fast. AREA ANGLER CLUBS The Great Bridge Fisherman’s Association is a family-oriented fishing club located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake, Virginia. Our charter is to introduce new anglers to the sport of recreational fishing while promoting the conservation of our resources. The diversity of its membership covers all aspects of recreational fishing from freshwater to saltwater, surf to pier, and inshore to offshore fishing. The club is active in the community, sponsoring various events including Wish a Fish, an Annual Scholarship to high school seniors pursuing higher education and inshore party boat fishing for both our senior and disabled residents. Our Tournament Director also ensures that the membership sponsors and participates in various inter and intra club tournaments throughout the year. Some of our annual activities include a banquet, lead pouring, oyster roast and fishing flea market. TIDEWATER AND THE OUTER BANKS MOBILE REPAIRS: Essentials to Carry Onboard for Emergency Repairs By John Tiger Boating season is here at last. What would you do if you broke down out on the water? Could you do a quick fix on something aboard your boat, should you experience a malfunction? While in many cases of breakdown you could get a quick tow back to where you presumably have more in the way of tools and parts, that may not always be the case. You could get stranded with no one else around to help, or on a large waterway, you could be stuck miles from home. Here we’ll discuss a solid base for an on-board tool kit, with items you should have aboard at all times in case of mishap. Hopefully these items will never be needed, but better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. SAFETY & GENERAL • A quality first aid kit is a number-one. You could cut or otherwise injure yourself trying to make repairs, and then what? - Don’t just pack the standard kit aboard; depending on the price, many mass-produced “marine” first aid kits really don’t have the essentials needed. Inspect what’s inside and repack with essentials. - Don’t forget to check and update the kit at least once per season. • A marine fire extinguisher is a must. Don’t skimp on this item, as it could literally save your life; imagine, for example, pouring fuel into the tank after you’ve run out, spilling and causing a fire. • A quality paddle, just in case. Your repairs might not work, and you’ll be thankful you can paddle to shore. • Hi-strength string/twine, plastic “zip ties” (ty-straps), a roll of duct tape, and electrician’s tape should also be aboard. A good supply of bungees and securing straps is also a good idea. You never know, you could repair a hose, hold a part to (or away from) another part, etc. • Don’t skimp on tie-up lines and a towrope. These should be sturdy, and inspected for rot and deterioration annually. You may just need a tow back to port. • An anchor is required gear in most states. Having one and using it could keep you from drifting down the lake if your engine’s out and you’re waiting for help. • A VHF radio could mean help coming when your cell phones don’t get a signal. A handheld will work fine if the batteries are charged.
EMERGENCY BREAKDOWN AND REPAIR • A “jump start” box that—most important—is kept charged, is a musthave. A set of jumper cables to go with it is also a good idea. These come in handy after a day on the sandbar playing tunes, and you’ve run down the battery so it won’t start the engine. • A tool kit that you make up, much like the first aid kit: - Start with a generic marine toolkit that includes the basics: standard pliers, cutting and needle-nose pliers, standard and Philips screwdrivers, nut drivers, combination wrenches, adjustable wrench, ratchet, extension and sockets, a small hand saw, and other tools. Then, add special items such as: • Spare fuses. • Small rolls of wire. • Spare spark plugs. • Spare belt (for inboards and stern drives; don’t forget to learn how to install it, and have the tools needed). • Small extendable mirror and magnet (for seeing and retrieving dropped bolts and tools!). • Don’t forget to keep the tools inside your kit lubricated with WD40 or spray silicone. If kept in the boat, chances are they’ll be exposed constantly to moisture, and they’ll rust. • A spare propeller with installation hardware and installation wrench (don’t forget a spare prop nut, thrust washer and related parts). • A spare ignition key and spare kill switch lanyard, in case of loss. • Don’t forget a spare quart of oil, whether your boat is stern drive, inboard or outboard, two or four-stroke. • Consider a spare gallon of fuel. It may get you to the nearest marina or at least to shore if you mistakenly run out. Be careful storing it; a fuel spill could be smelly, or disastrous. This primer is by no means a complete list. Customize your on-board essentials for your boat, your engine and your boating lifestyle, and you’ll be that much better equipped to handle breakdowns and mishaps like a pro.

FISHING THE OCEAN SURFACE By Mike Buss
L
ast month we mentioned some obvious facts that fish will be somewhere in the water column and you will have a better chance to catch them if you can effectively place your fly in front of them. This month we will discuss fishing the surface in saltwater. The first thing to consider when fishing in saltwater is to know what the tides will be doing when you are on the water. If you are fishing in the marshes here in the Tidewater area for puppy drum or trout you must time your fishing to be on the water when the tide is moving, either coming in or going out. You must also know the area you will be fishing. For example, some areas are high and dry during low tide but are very productive when the tide floods allowing the targeted fish to prowl and look for crabs and other bottom creatures. They are very receptive to a well-placed fly then. It’s best to explore the marsh area before fishing and the best time to do that is on a falling tide. Look for the depressions as these will be the highways the fish will use either coming in or going out of the marsh. I like to fish marsh areas on a rising tide looking for the telltale signs of feeding fish. If you are fishing for puppy drum you will see their tails splashing the surface. Approach these fish very quietly and try to determine the direction they are moving and make a cast about five feet in front of them and wait for them to head that way. When they get close to your fly, give it a little movement and your chances are good for a hookup. These marsh areas are also very good on a falling tide as the receding waters will be flushing out a lot of bait. Puppy drum know this and wait at the mouths of marsh creeks for the bait that is being carried along at the mercy of the tide. Here I like to position myself outside of the creek mouth and make my cast into the creek and let the tide carry it out to the fish. Fishing the surface out in the open ocean is totally different than fishing the surface area in marshes. In the open ocean, the key is boat control and placement. You are often casting to breaking fish and birds are your best friend to locate these fish. Birds will be attracted to the breaking fish forcing bait to the surface and jumping out of the water to escape the predators under them only to be captured by the birds above them. If you see birds on the open ocean, it is usually a good idea to inspect the area for breaking fish. I approach the breaking fish slowly and carefully with a caster on the bow of my boat ready to make a cast to the baitball they are feeding on. When I am within casting distance, I turn the boat to the right if my caster is right-handed or to the left if they are left-handed and shift into neutral or turn the engine off. That way they will have a tight line when their cast hits the water and the boat won’t continue into the baitball. I encourage my caster to cast into baitball and quickly make a few strips to imitate a fleeing baitfish. The hookup is usually immediate. Follow these simple instructions and you should be hooked up.

Greeting from the 252 speaking of the outer banks area code of course. The kayak season is off to a great start. I have been hitting the bedding bass pretty hard and realized pretty quick that the top water frog is the ticket for big bass. I have recently had my feelings hurt not getting the hook ups that I would like to and losing some really nice bass (I cried in the kayak). I had to do some research and went to youtube. (Pro Tip) grab a set of pliers and bend the hooks up and out away from the body of the frog and trim its legs down to about half of what it currently is. This will improve your hook up ratio by 75%. You will still have the blow ups and misses but if the fish grabs it you got them. Now over to salt, from what I am seeing the red drum are being caught at the point but a little bird that shows up every year has the point on lockdown for their nesting site. They are moving into the sound and up the coast. On the Virginia side. The large reds are being caught in the washing machine of the eastern shore. Everyones favorite fishing hole at Rudee inlet is full of Blues and specks and the Tupperware Navy has had a very strong showing here. Lynnhaven has already had some nice flounder slabs caught and the trout are on fire. I know a lot of you are waiting on the cobia. By the time you read this a few of you will are have caught a few. Now go get your paddle wet.

he Bay was always a source of wonder and excitement for me. The sun, winds and tides made it look different, every day. What I found most hypnotic was looking down, especially in the estuaries of the marsh, and seeing the small fish, crabs and plants that lived in these more shallow areas. As a child, I was amazed to see the completely different world that lived beneath the surface of the water. My Pop explained that this was where the fish and crabs, that we so joyously consumed, began their life. I also began my appreciation of eel grass. Hidden in the green sea of this grass lived a whole microcosm of the sea. Here lay scallops, larger crabs and clams. Once we discovered the presence of the cherrystone clam, Mom’s love of blowfish preparation was reduced in favor of the new horizon of clam recipes. Unlike blowfish, one of the favorite ways to prepare clams was raw on the half shell. This seemed to please my father, mother and our constant flow of guests. It was imperative that I, as the only son and part time aluminum rowboat captain, know how to shuck clams. I became a master of clam shucking in a very short time, as the demand was high during consumption times. I soon learned that clams, unwilling to be part of the culinary sacrifice, were more relaxed when placed in the freezer for a short time. We learned to make clam chowder, we grilled them, but meeting an Italian family was life changing. Joe introduced my Mom to CLAMS CASINO. This would significantly affect our future consumption and the clam population, in general. This new way of baking clams was delicious and was now the new recipe that guests raved about. Mom loved to say that our guests raved about her cooking. While I also found some of their friends, to be raving, she was actually a good cook. Some nights, dinner was simply Clams Casino and French Fries, while this did not help my husky self, it probably didn’t hurt, either. Pop and I always felt the pressure to thank her for the great meal, even when it was a salad. Generally though, we were not ravers, just supportive. I will also share with you our clam harvest strategy. We found areas that in those days had a large number of clams, down below the eel grass. Pop and I should shimmy along and feel a thing that felt like a rock. We would then submerge, clutch and then snatch the clam from its happy sand bed. The male harvesters in our family loved to swim, even if a little diving was warranted all was good, especially in July and August. My Mom had a different approach. At first, she would don her swim suit and get on the Garvey. Then putting on her swim cap, she would disembark slowly, while the ladder was held on both sides by her men. She would enter the water,
as long as it was not over three feet in depth. Mom was British and her entry into the water was very much queenlike and regal. She would then, stepping upon a happy clam, gingerly crouch down to see if the clam would jump into her hand. Nope, the clams never cooperated with her strategy. You have to understand that Mom was not a good swimmer, even in the three feet of water. While it only required her to stand up, she reminded us to keep an eye on her. Most importantly, this clamming operation had the possibility of ruining both her hairdo and her nails. These were two sacred items to Mom and her colleagues and not to be messed with, if possible. Soon, Mom devised a new strategy. She would feel something through her clamming bootie and call one of her boys. The closer of us would respond with our clam containment device, consisting of a bushel basket in an inner tube. She would tell us if it was her right or left foot and we would follow her leg to her foot and then the unfortunate clam. I was not a fan of this technique, in fact found it a little creepy. It didn’t matter to me whether it was a smooth or shaved leg, it was uncomfortable. As a result, I would quickly shuffle far away, so as not to be the closest when Mom found a poor bivalve. Pop seemed to have a different opinion of her strategy. I noticed that he seemed to view this as an opportunity. I also noticed that, unlike my leg - following technique, Pop and Mom would often giggle, especially depending on the depth of the water. As an adult, I think I understand the dynamic, though I remained an only child. Things went well for the family clamming excursions, until one day. Mom stepped on a ray. While both Pop and I had both felt the bottom move, this was Code Red for Mom. The screaming and flailing that occurred was apparently the inspiration for the movie Jaws. Very dramatic. Like the First Responders we were, Pop and I came to the rescue. Mom was trying to float in the usual three feet of water, blowing seawater out of her mouth. Pop, the senior Responder, told Mom to just stand up as this flailing and spitting, while amusing, was unnecessary. I got to see Mom’s laser look, again, whilst she said in her full British accent that the thing might still be there. Pop said he thought it was clear, as the poor bruised fish would have been happy to get way. We always said that Mom laughed at jokes twice; once when they were told and once when she got them. She wasn’t sure if he had just made comment on her weight or was rendering a medical opinion. Soon, we were packed up and headed for shore. To our surprise, it was Clams Casino and French Fries for dinner. So many memories, so little time.

Fish Where Fish Live Tim Barefoot
W
hatever you fish for, be it fresh or saltwater, you know where you should be fishing. But sometimes it can be frightening to cast into the heart of a snag or brushpile where the fish are, knowing you might lose whatever you have tied on. Here’s a simple way to avoid getting hung up. With the following snag-resistant rig, you can present a bait to the fish
where they live instead of trying to lure them out of their hiding place. I’m not saying this tackle is immune to mazes of mangrove roots or treetops, but it greatly reduces the chances of getting hung up. Protect the hook point with a fluorocarbon weed guard, and you can fish more effectively in thick cover. This method works with J hooks, circle hooks and some lures. I’ve been using this technique to make a weedless soft-plastic shrimp, and there are countless other applications. One of my favorite and most effective ways to use this is with a single hook, no weight and a live bait in shallow water. It also works well on a circle hook chin weight under a sliding cork over really rough bottom. Sometimes you have to go in the cover or drift just above it to get the bite. Most gamefish attack from be-
low, so a bait on a sliding cork is the ultimate target while staying out of snags. Here are the steps to snelling a weed guard onto the shank of the hook. I like the stiffness of Seagar 80-pound fluoro for weed guards. Depending on your application, other lines might work fine also. Make sure to choose a hook with an eye that will accept two pieces of the weed guard and the leader you are snelling. 1) Cut about 6 inches of 80-pound fluoro and bend it backward against the curve of the spool. This will mold the shape of your weed guard. 2) Insert both tag ends through the backside of the hook eye, leaving an inch of the doubled 80-pound fluoro on the shank of the hook. 3) Pass a leader line down through the eye of the hook and the center of the tag ends of the 80-pound fluoro. Pull out about 6 or 8 inches. 4) Holding the weed guard securely on the hook shank, make a 5- or 6-loop snell over the 80-pound fluoro, going forward toward the eye of the hook. DO NOT pull down hard on it right away. 5) Keeping the 80-pound fluoro straight on the hook shank, gently roll into place and push forward BEFORE pulling down hard to “cinch” the snell. 6) After everything is pulled up tight, trim the 80-pound fluoro off just behind the barb of the hook. Also, trim the doubled 80-pound fluoro close behind the snell. uffalo aren’t typically thought of as a game fish species. While they are a favorite for bowfishing, many conventional anglers might not even know they exist. Hugh Newman, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, would likely tell you these slow-moving bottom-feeders are well worth pursuing. He caught the new 66-pound, 3-ounce state record smallmouth buffalo in May, and the fight on 8-pound-test must have been exhilarating. Newman’s tactics might not be the go-to if you choose to target buffalo. They are suckerfish and feed mostly on small bottom-dwelling critters and algae. Typically anglers fishing for buffalo use nightcrawlers, dough baits or cut bait. Newman caught his on a swimbait, while fishing southeast Oklahoma’s Broken Bow Lake. The huge buffalo crushed the existing record of 44 pounds, 2 ounces, which has stood since 2007. IGFA’s All-Tackle World Record for smallmouth buffalo is 82 pounds, 3 ounces. That fish was caught from Athens Lake, Texas in 1993.

Finding And Fishing Summer Ledges

grew up fishing lakes known for large schools of bass that spend the summer months offshore. When we get into the summer and the water temperature starts hitting 80 degrees, it is a safe bet that fish are going to be on offshore structure like ledges, humps and dropoffs. I start looking on main lake areas, on the lower half of the lake, where most of the good summer ledges are. Using the mapping on my Lowrance electronics, I search for places that top out from 12 to 20 feet and drop down to anywhere from 50-60 feet. Bass will start heading out there when the water gets to 70 degrees, but when it hits 80 they will definitely be out there. They spawn with a water temperature of 62 to 64 degrees, so as the water warms after the spawn they will start heading that way. Some fish stay shallow all year. The ones that move out will definitely be schooled up on the ledges as the temperatures approach 80 degrees. The biggest deal is finding the depth range of the fish. When they first arrive on offshore structure, they like 12 to 17 feet. The longer they’re there, the deeper they’ll move. It could take a week or a month, but they’ll drop down into 18 to 25 feet and
maybe even as deep as 30 feet. To find the depth range of the fish, I will graph and look for the bait and then the fish. Usually I can see the bass on my Raymarine units, but I will often fish around a big school of bait in case the bass are hiding right under the thick bait. If I don’t see bait or bass, I won’t make a cast. Electronics are too good these days to fish places just because there were fish there at some point in the past. I always start with a moving bait, such as a deepdiving crankbait, to see if I can get the fish fired up. The biggest ones in the school will bite a crankbait. I like a Strike King 6XD and 8XD fished on a MHX CB907 cranking rod that I built myself with supplies from Mud Hole. I always put new Mustad hooks on the baits. I prefer #2 KVD Triple Grip trebles. I use 10- to 12-pound Vicious fluorocarbon for the 6XD and 15- to 17-pound on the 8XD. I like a slower 5:4:1 gear ratio reel to help crankbaits dive to their deepest depths. When those fish start grouping up out on the ledges, you can really have a lot of fun. Hundred-fish days are possible, and I get excited just thinking about it. When that water temp gets close to 80, it is time to get out deep and get healthy in a hurry come tournament day.

he big catfish are biting at Watts Bar Lake on the Tennessee River between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tenn. Fifty-four teams of catfish anglers from 11 states converged May 3-5 to test their catfishing skills during a King Kat Tournament Trail Super Event presented by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. Competitors were vying for $16,000 in cash and prizes and an opportunity to qualify for the $120,000 Classic Championship to be held in November on Wheeler Lake at Decatur, Alabama. A good bite on day one resulted in some good fish coming to the scales. The top four teams had more than 100 pounds, as Chris and David Roberson took a commanding lead with 146.56 pounds. They also held the Big Kat lead with a 64.64-pound Tennessee River beast. The next closest team was Michael Jordan and Charlie Parsons with 117.70 pounds.
A big fish produced a come-from-behind win and back-to-back champs on Watts Bar. Mike Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell and Rick Sexton came from fifth place on day one to become repeat champions. Last year’s winners brought a two-day total of 228.82 pounds to the scales to claim the win. Their day-two weight was aided by the second big fish of the tournament at 63.58 pounds, just a pound away from the Big Kat of the tournament. Mike and Jackson, of Rogersville, Ala., and Rick from Helenwood, Tenn. earned $6,000 for first place. They found their fish close to structure in the downtown Loudon area. Mike said the fish were relating to rock and wood structure where they tempted them with cut skipjack. They weighed in five flatheads and five blues for their 10-fish limit during the two-day tournament. The runner-up spot went to Jared Coker, from Corryton, Tenn., and Terohn Heinrich, from Knoxville, Tenn. They moved up from fourth place on day one with a two-day weight of 217.98 pounds to earn a check for $2,600. David and Darlene Hill claimed the third-place spot with 195.16 pounds. The Louisville, Tenn. team earned a check for $2,000. Fourth place went to Chris Robinson, of Locust Grove, Ga., and David Robinson, of McDonough, Ga. They had a two-day total of 194.02 pounds that included the Big Kat of the tournament. The Big Kat was a flathead that weighed 64.64 pounds and gave Chris his new personal best. The team earned $1,100 for placing fourth, $1,100 for Big Kat, and $1,000 for the hotel bonus for staying at a Loudon County hotel. Rounding out the top five and pulling out the comeback of the day was Carl Morris Jr., of Johnstown, Ohio, and Rob Parsons, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. eff Bonawitz, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had already caught several 30 pounders from the Susquehanna River on April 6 and was running low on bait. He selected the biggest bluegill from the bait tank, and the fish that ate it turned out to be a 50-pound, 7-ounce new state record flathead catfish. “I could tell it was big. It kept hanging down deep and when it finally came up to the top, we thought it might be a mermaid,” joked Bonawitz. “I’ve fished the Susquehanna for years, and I’ve never caught anything quite like it.” It took 25 minutes to land the fish on an 8-foot, medium-action spinning rod loaded with 25-pound-test mono. Bonawitz kept the fish alive in an aerated container at his home until the following day. On April 7, the fish was officially weighed, setting a new state record for the species. The previous record, caught in 2006, weighed 48-pound, 6-ounces. There are several organizations that claim larger fish as the world record, but IGFA recognizes a 123-pound flathead caught from Elk City Reservoir in Kansas as the All-Tackle World Record. Upon weighing the fish, Bonawitz with assistance from his nephew, Dylan, 8, released the catfish back to the Susquehanna River. “It was such an amazing fish,” said Bonawitz. “I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it. I have a feeling this record may not last very long.”
