CAST 2021 marked a return to normalcy for the fishing industry. In the 64th exhibition of the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the halls of the Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center bustled with activity July 21-23. Live Bait Snook on South Florida Beaches
H
ere on Florida’s East Coast, we have access to some of the most exciting shore-based fishing there is. From spring, through summer and into fall, big snook run the beaches of South Florida, and they can be caught from the sand with lures and even sight fished with flies. I am a lure fisherman, and everyone knows it, but fishing with artificials can be difficult during the doldrums of late summer and fall. The Atlantic Ocean is flatter and big snook become wary. The fish are still here; what are we to do? Here’s a pretty simple technique that will catch snook when the fishing gets tough. The hottest bait this time of year is live croakers. Croakers are catching so many snook right now that the local bait shops here in the Stuart, Fla. area sell out as soon as they get a shipment. With the artificial bite kind of drying up, my friend and occasional fishing buddy, Mike Vars, showed me how to catch big snook on live bait. Mike buys a dozen croakers when he can get them. All you need to keep them alive for a couple days is a round bucket with an aerator. Good baitsized croakers are 5 to 8 inches, anything larger might catch a big snook, but they are harder to fish. Mike uses a 3 or 4 size circle hook and hooks his croakers through the nostrils so they can

swim freely. Some anglers prefer to hook them through the tail. Since the tactic involves free-lining, with no weight, casts should be just past the trough on a high tide, which is about 20 feet here. Then open the spool and let that croaker run. On low tide, it might be necessary to wade past the trough and cast farther out. Mike uses a 60-lb. leader and 20-lb. braid on a spinning reel. Before the snook takes the bait, the croaker will often wiggle excitedly—this is a signal you are about to get bit. When the line suddenly starts moving fast, it means a snook has your croaker. Let her have the bait for a few seconds, and then begin reeling steadily so the circle hook lodges in the corner of her mouth. Dog Days of Catfishing The crazy summer weather continues. We have had some wild thunderstorms in SE VA. They bring torrential rains and cooler air/water temperatures. The cool off, combined with the runoff caused by flooding in the upper creeks, sets up perfect conditions for a ravenous catfish bite. The horrible mid-to-late day summer heat with its ever-present 40% chance of thunderstorms can normally be avoided by getting to the water before the sun lightens the sky to the East. You will be sitting on the still waters ready to cast your spread just as the sun comes up and the morning bite begins. I have been seeing a lot of 10-15 pound blues up in the swollen ”shallows” that hold a lot of bait fish in these nutrient refreshed waters. There is still a chance for a 20-30 pounder, but the numbers aren’t there like they were a few years ago. A trophy fish is always a possibility, but these post-spawn fish caught recently are still lean and won’t be bulked up until late October-November. #8’s Days are Limited I have not made any trips to the lakes or big rivers this year, mainly because I feel limited in #8’s capabilities. It is a great boat for the Northwest and North Landing Rivers, but after saying that I have had some tense moments fighting wakes from the giant snowbird yachts moving South on the intercoastal waterway (going North in the Spring). Last month I made the decision to move up to an 18- foot side console aluminum modified-vee Jon boat made by one of the boat builders that lean towards heavy duty aluminum boats sought after by catfishermen. There are several out there such as Sea Ark, G3, War Eagle, and others each with several models. While we are on the subject, I’d be remiss not to mention the big water aluminum boats at the top of the food chain that are designed and built in the Northwestern corner of the country. If I was fishing on the Ohio, Tennessee, or lower James River exclusively and in all weather conditions, I’d have to consider a Northwest or Hewes boat. They have their calling on the big water. A Salmon fishing friend of mine has a 24-foot Hewes that he fishes on Lake Ontario. It is a beast of a boat with plenty of room for all the toys in its large wheelhouse and open fishing cockpit. #9 will have better handling and freeboard for those other-thanperfect days and for trips on the rivers and lakes. It will also have more speed and range for exploring. We have previously discussed the compromises that must be made when moving up to a console rigged boat. The cockpit will have about the same square footage as #8, but the freeboard is increased by 6 inches and the beam is a foot wider. The deadrise will increase to 10 degrees from a rather flat 2 degrees for a smoother ride with better maneuverability. Fuel capacity will go from 3 gallons to 19. The engine will go from 25 hp to 90 hp. I don’t see myself flitting around like so many glass glitter boats trying to find green ditch pickles, but it will be nice to have the option to hit multiple fishing holes further away. We’ll talk more about acquiring and rigging #9 in future articles. There will be plenty of time for that since COVID has significantly delayed deliveries. I probably won’t see the boat until this Fall because the manufactures are so backed-up. Dealers have little inventory today. Until then, get out there and get amongst them. The bite is on. What’s on your boat? By Capt. Jim Davison, , Miss Disturbed Sportfising I get this question all the time, What do I need on my boat to run offshore? Here is my standard answer. What does the Coast Guard require? Now, with that being said, the Coast Guard requirements are a minimum and with all the advanced safety items out there you can really rig your boat up. The one thing I ask is what is the difference in running offshore and having problems and just 2 miles off the beach in the middle of the winter. If your boat goes down after sunset in 5’ seas at 45 degrees that is just as bad as going down 40 miles offshore as far as I am concerned; bad things can happen in both situations. So, lets take a look at what items I have and things that you can add to better your chances of getting rescued. First thing I tell everyone is make sure your personal flotation devices are at least what the Coast Guard requires and go from there. I personally like the inflatable vest as I can wear them all the time if I desire, I also like to keep good Type 1 jackets onboard for everyone that is with me. On those jackets I like to have a beacon light and whistle that way I don’t have to dig in my ditch bag. Speaking of ditch bags, this is a waterproof bag to keep safety stuff in just incase you have to abandon ship. My ditch bag has the following items in it and checked every time I get under way, handheld VHF with gps, handheld flares, 20 ga flares with gun, 10’ of rope, hard candy, glow sticks, whistle, air powered horn, and the red plastic trailing tail. If something happens, I grab my EPIRB and ditch bag. Speaking of EPIRB are they required, no, but I go no place on the water without one. They are expensive but well worth the money if something happens. Please if you do any boating in the ocean please purchase an EPIRB. I also get asked about life rafts. To this I say if you have the space on your boat then yes get you one. I’m actually working on a spot on my boat to add one and will be added this fall if not sooner. So, lets recap. Other than what is required by the Coast Guard what do
I have on my boat for safety? A ditch bag loaded up, inflatable life jackets, type 1 life jackets, and EPIRB. I also have 2 VHF radio’s, 2 mounted GPS/ Fish finder/Radar units, 1 handheld GPS, 1 handheld VHF and a handheld spotlight. I really want someone to find me if something happens. Everyone, I can’t stress this enough going down is going down it doesn’t matter how far off the beach you are. It maybe hours or days before someone gets to you. It is so much easier to be prepared and ready than bobbing around in the ocean wishing you would have purchased that EPIRB or had a ditch bag. Thanks everyone and stay safe. At Tiger Outboards, this is the most common customer complaint we see, day in and day out: the engine will idle when run “on the hose”, but when it’s in the water, it won’t run properly and won’t throttle up. Continued pressure from the federal government to increase the amount of alcohol in fuels has brought serious concerns and changes to the marine industry and the way fuel systems are manufactured, rigged and maintained. E10 fuel (fuel extended with up to 10% alcohol) has been difficult to adapt to, but the marine industry has made the necessary changes to parts such as gaskets, carburetor repair kits, fuel lines, pumps, filters and injectors to combat the ravaging effects of so much alcohol in the fuel. Let’s take a look at how to combat the effects of alcohol-laced fuels, as well as general maintenance and good practice. KEEPING FUEL TREATED The best prevention against fuel problems is to use REC 90 (non ethanol) fuel. Unfortunately, even in Hampton Roads and the OBX, REC 90 fuel is not always available. The next best thing is to treat the fuel with fuel conditioner. The best fuel conditioner on the market is GAS-SHOK (www.usafuelservice.com/how-gas-shok-works/), which is available locally at any number of marine stores and dealerships. If you can’t find GAS-SHOK, then Star-Tron or Sta-Bil both work-just not as well as GAS-SHOK. For the fuel additive to work, it must be poured into the boat fuel tank, then the engine run long enough (typically at least 15 minutes) to get the treated fuel into the engine’s fuel system. At Tiger Outboards, we advise customers who don’t use REC 90 fuel to treat every tank with fuel conditioner, thereby running it 100% of the time. This way, if you forget and don’t run the boat for awhile, the fuel is already conditioned, and it won’t cause problems. Untreated ethanol fuel can cause problems in boat fuel systems in as little as 30 days sitting idle! FUEL LINES The engine can’t run if it can’t get fuel. If your fuel lines are older than three years, they should be replaced with new EPA-compliant hose and new clamps. The innards of older fuel hoses— and even new ones, ones that are cheap and sold at discount stores—are highly susceptible to alcohol deterioration, and can literally disintegrate and cause clogging, poor running and even engine failure. EPA-mandated (clearly labeled) fuel line solves this problem by using a very tough inner liner; it’s visible by looking into the end of the open fuel hose. It does make the hose somewhat less flexible; it’s tougher, for example, to push the hose onto a fitting. The new hose is also quite a bit more expensive. Take care when routing the lines; tight curves will generate kinks and flow stoppages. FILTER If your rig doesn’t have a water-separating fuel filter, now’s a good time to add one. Typical marina-brand units work well to filter out water, dirt and other contaminants. Placement in the fuel line should be between the tank outlet and the engine inlet. PRIMER Many outboards use primer bulbs; if your rig has one; these can be damaged by alcohol extended fuels too. These have check valves inside that can fail and leave you stranded out on the water. If it feels squishy, and the engine can “suck” the bulb flat, it’s toast—replace it. Buy an original equipment one—the aftermarket ones just do not work as well. CLAMPS The clamps that keep the fuel lines tight are critical, and warrant checking. They prevent fuel leaks, and just as important, prevent air leaks. Air leaks can starve an engine for fuel. The result is a ruined engine. Use new clamps if the old ones won’t hold, are corroded, or are falling apart. TANK Finally, check the tank carefully for leaks, cracks, and loose mounting. Vibration and wave pounding can do a number on your fuel tank, and unless it’s leaking fuel into the bilge, you might not even notice it. If yours is cracked, broken or corroded, replace it. While a new tank can be expensive, a boat fire is surely worse. When remounting your tank, be sure it’s not sitting directly on the boat floor; suspend it slightly above, or use a rubber mounting cushion pad underneath. If possible, create an access hole in the floor so that you can use through-bolts, nuts and large fender washers to mount the tank instead of wood screws. One last word, about anti-siphon valves. These reside in the outlet fitting from the tank to the engine, with a hose nipple on the other end where the fuel line is installed. The anti-siphon feature is to keep fuel from flowing into the bilge if a failure occurs in the fuel line. Some cheaper valves can cause fuel restrictions to the engine; if you experience this, don’t be tempted to simply remove the check valve from inside the anti-siphon fitting. It’s against the law and could get you in a heap of trouble if you experience a fuel related boat fire due to fuel in the bilge. Replace it with a quality anti-siphon valve, available at local marine dealers. Hint: the high quality ones cost three times as much as the cheap ones, and are usually made in the USA. Hard to beat fresh fried spot and croaker. Simply clean your Spot, gut them and scale then cut two or three slits in each side of the filet. Use your favorite breading and kick it up a bit with some blackened seasoning. I don’t use an egg wash, simply batter the fish straight in the breading batter mix and fry in a hot cast iron skillet. You will want to fry them pretty good until golden brown and crispy. You can add some baking powder to the breading mix for some extra crisp. We also enjoy beer batter mixes, but use a good quality dark beer, like a Legend Brown Ale. Serve with tarter and lemon. ENJOY!

Seems like everyone has had a great summer on the water and my favorite time of year is now upon is. Yes it is true, old JB here just turned 60, and still one of my most pleasurable outings is simply bottom bouncing for croaker, spot, and flounder. September is a great month to do just that! One of my favorite spots is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Drifting from there down to the Merrimac Tunnel is a great drift. Lots of fish around the Hampton Bar area. Years ago when we were starting out as Fishing Virgina TV, we would put our bass boats in at Hopewell and make the trip down just to fish the Bar. Always productive. I never do anything real special as far as rigs, just some double bottom dropper rigs, squid and away you go! This is also great fishing to get your little ones involved in because usually there is so much action. Another great spot is the 17-foot hole in Phoebus, right in front of the scallop boats. This is a great one especially for spot, and we do usually break out the bloodworms for the spot. Do yourself and your family a favor and book a trip this month. can hardly believe it is August already! Tourism here on the Outer Banks has been record setting and we in the fishing fleet have also been having a great year of business and catches. Because August is here, it is tournament time for Billfish. The Pirates Cove Tournament week starts August 7th thru the 14th and the tournament looks to be better than the COVID restricted ones from last year where the post fishing events were cancelled or highly restricted. The week of fishing starts off on Saturday, August 7th, with registration at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Cookout for a Cure with food provided by Sam and Omie’s. There will also be boat decoration and team costume contests. The Captains’ meeting will be at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, August 8th, the 32nd Alice Kelly Women’s Billfish Tourney will be held followed by the awards banquet and a night of musical entertainment where you can dance the night away. Monday morning on August 9th, registration continues and a Mate’s Luncheon. Registration continues until 9:00 p.m. that evening with the Captain’s Meeting at 8:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Fishing will begin for the 38th Annual Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament on Tuesday and will continue until Friday, August 13th with a food and entertainment event after each evening except on Friday when the awards banquet will be held. On Saturday, August 14th, the 4th Annual Sheep Dogs Veterans Challenge with lines in at 8:30 a.m. and out at 3:00 p.m. Dinner, entertainment and awards ceremony will follow after the day of fishing is over. WHY FLY FISH HERE? By Scott Reppert Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers
F
ly fishing, here? This is CRAZY. There are no real trout streams that are not hours away. If that is your only picture of fishing with a fly I want to broaden your perspective. If you currently fish for a species that does not live in 100 feet of water consider using a fly rod; it can be more effective. You keep your bait in front of the fish longer and more often. Really? Despite the idea that you spend your time “waving” your rod, using a fly is about having your fly in the water, not in the air. Waving or false casting is just not that good to do. There are no fish I know about around here that swim in the air. There are many things that will grab your fly out of the air including trees, boats and eyebrows. We will talk about casting next month. Seriously, say you are fishing the Eastern Shore for flounder or whatever might be available. You put a Clouser Minnow up current with enough time and line to get to the bottom and you have a good shot at a quality fish. Big black drum, redfish and even sharks respond to a fly. Fly rods are numbered based on the weight of the line they can throw. Yes, the weight is in the line. Ideally the fly is weightless and has no wind resistance. That pretty much never happens around here. I have caught decent sized bass on smaller flies (I mean freshwater too), but bigger baits usually catch bigger fish. A 5 weight rod will catch many inshore and freshwater fish. If your fly is bigger or it is windy (when is it not?) an 8 weight can be helpful. God willing, in the next few years, we can see striped bass in December in size and numbers. I have my doubts, but hopefully, stripped bass and bluefish will line up in the lights of many bridges and docks. You can see them and they readily take a fly. Again the trick is accurately keeping your bait in front of the fish. Fly fishing does that very well. Can you fly fish 12 months a year without flying somewhere? Maybe not. Is fly fishing a useful tool to add to your tool belt/arsenal? Absolutely! Will it work every time? Probably not. Will it help you to be a better fisherperson? As I reported last month, for me, the answer is a clear yes.

iyeeeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeee!” The shout sounded Cajun, or perhaps like the intro to a mariachi tune. Either way, it amplified the chaos on deck. Three rods were bent. Two anglers scrambled to uncross lines screaming off reels. A third angler dove to wrap an arm around the 10-year-old who held a death grip on rod number three. It was a tossup as to whether the kid would lose the rod or be yanked overboard into a very active chum slick. The whole scene unraveled when a 10-foot tiger shark rose to the surface. It smashed the boy’s cobia straight through the surface, blowing up close enough to drench us, maybe 15 feet off the stern. There was stunned silence, then... “Ayeeee, yeeee, yeeee, yeeee!” our captain hollered. “I love chaos!” Man, what a trip. It was a lot more than my two brothers and I expected upon reconnecting with a childhood friend in Bluffton, South Carolina. Our captain, Keene Reese, is a successful real estate agent with Ussery Group, Charter One Realty in the Lowcountry. He is also a very fishy dude. In mid-June, he invited us—along with my 10-year-old son— on a 20-mile ride offshore, where cobia were thick on a well-known wreck. With a beautiful chum slick snaking off the stern of Reese’s 25’ Regulator “Copacetic,” it didn’t take 10 minutes for “brownies” to start showing on the surface. There was no need for down-lines that day. All the action was on top, visible and simple. Pitch a live menhaden on a freeline, and a cobia would take it before you reached the rod holder. Over the course of a few hours, we boated well over a dozen cobia,
although the action came in such crazy spurts that no one could keep count. The thing is, we only landed four fish longer than the 36-inch minimum. That’s good news, according to Mel Bell, the director of Fisheries Management with South Carolina DNR. For decades, South Carolina was famous for its inshore cobia runs. May is the peak of a spawning run that once saw scads of cobia pushing into Port Royal Sound, Calibogue Sound, St. Helena Sound and the Broad River. Bell said boats lined up to target big eggbearing females before they could reproduce. The fishery collapsed. “We were in a bad place in 2016,” Bell said. “The numbers were scary. Even the anglers were telling us we had to do something.” While overall Atlantic cobia stocks are in good shape, according to the latest assessment, Bell said sound-spawners in South Carolina are a distinct “sub-population.” The Southern Cobia Management Zone was formed in 2016 to protect these inshore-spawning fish. The zone stretches from Jeremy Inlet on Edisto Island, S.C. south to the Georgia border. It extends three miles offshore, and within this zone there is a one fish per person, three per boat daily limit—except in May, when cobia harvest is closed. The limit in federal waters is one per person, six per boat. The minimum length is 36 inches, which brings us back to all the short fish. Bell said South Carolina DNR isn’t ready to release hard data. However, he’s heard fishermen reporting lots of smaller fish, which are likely the age classes protected since 2016. If anecdotes translate into survey data, it would mean the restrictions are working. Bell said next year might be time to take a close look and see just how well cobia are returning to the sounds. THREE WAYS TO TARGET

BIG CATS
f you like the feel of really big fish on the end of a line, catfish are a good option. There are several different types, but trophy hunters set their sights on blue and flathead catfish. Both species grow large and can weigh in excess of 100 pounds. For bait, catfish have been caught on just about everything you can think of. But generally, big flatheads are predators and like whole, live, hand-sized bream. Blues like large cut bait like bream, skipjack or carp. Once you’ve got your bait, here are some ideas for how to fish it. Fish a Fan: My favorite technique is to anchor up in a good spot near rocky bottom or structure such as a ledge, river channel or creek bed. I have 14 Driftmaster 255 H Pro Duo rod holders, which I use to put out a fan of baits on Penn Fathom reels and medium to heavy rods. These are spooled with 80-pound PowerPro braid. The terminal end is a weight slide on the main line then a swivel and a 3- to 5-foot leader, with a Gamakatsu 8/0 circle hook on the end. These are the rigs I use to fish Cabela’s King Kat tournaments. They are heavy duty because you never know when a 100-pound monster will show up. Back-Trolling: On big rivers, back-trolling can be very effective. Use your trolling motor in reverse to slow
the boat’s drift in the current and present baits to catfish holding on the bottom. Bottom bouncing is Bill Dance’s preferred method on the Mississippi River. It’s also very popular on the Tennessee River. It allows you to keep your bait about a foot off the bottom and bounce it to fish facing upstream. Tie a three-way swivel to a mainline of 40- to 80-lb. braid. On the bottom eye of the swivel, tie in 12 inches of 20-lb. mono drop line and attach a bank sinker. The drop line should be lighter than your main line so you can save the rest of the rig when your sinker gets caught. On the third eye, use a 2- to 3-foot piece of the same line as your main line and attach a 6/0 to 12/0 circle hook, depending on the size of your bait. Drift Fishing: Drift fishing is very popular on big lakes like Santee Cooper in South Carolina. On windy days, set all your rods on one side of the boat with weights that will slide along the bottom. Pencil, Lindy and slinky sinkers all work well for this. If the wind pushes the boat too fast, deploy driftsocks to slow the boat. If you don’t have driftsocks, 5-gallon buckets work in a pinch. Co. and have really enjoyed using it,” they wrote. In another Facebook post from July, they wrote: “[It] takes up [approximately] 3 cubic feet and holds 560’ of chain, rope and dyneema.” Utilizing the Patriot series, Insetta’s boats are equipped with a complete 316 stainless steel unit, much like their commitment to use this corrosionresistant, marine-grade metal wherever applicable during the construction of their own vessels.
